Adsorptive removal of antibiotics from water and wastewater: Progress and challenges

Improving the adsorption properties of low surface area hardwood biochar for the removal of Fe+ and PO₄3- from aqueous solution

Biochar produced from wood residues may provide a new method and material for managing the environment, particularly in terms of carbon sequestration and contaminant remediation. Additionally, biochar produced from wood residues is free of chemical fertilizers, likewise in rice straw, wheat straw, corn straw, etc. This study investigated the removal of iron from aqueous solutions by a novel low-cost and eco-friendly biochar made from hardwood trees and modified by adding MgCl2 for effective phosphate removal. Optimal adsorption conditions were determined through studies of adsorption time, pH, and adsorbent dosage. Batch equilibrium isotherm and kinetic experiments and pre/post-adsorption characterizations using FESEM-EDS, XRD, and FTIR suggested that the presence of carboxyl group elements and colloidal and nano-sized MgO (periclase) particles on the biochar surface were the main adsorption sites for aqueous iron and phosphate respectively. In this study, the HW and MgO-HW biochar showed excellent Dubinin-Radushkevich isotherm (D-R) maximum adsorption capacities of 289.45 and 828.82 mg/g for iron and phosphate. The kinetic study for iron and phosphate adsorption was described well by pseudo second-order model and pseudo second-order model respectively. The HW biochar and the prepared MgO-HW biochar exhibited commendable iron adsorption (98.25%) performance at 10 pH units and phosphate (96.22%) at pH 6 respectively. Thus, this research reveals a waste-to-wealth strategy by converting hardwood waste into mineral-biomass biochar with excellent Fe and P adsorption capabilities and environmental adaptability.

Revolutionizing wastewater treatment: A review on the role of advanced functional bio-based hydrogels

Water contamination poses a significant challenge to environmental and public health, necessitating sustainable wastewater treatment solutions. Adsorption is one of the most widely used techniques for purifying water, as it effectively removes contaminants by transferring them from the liquid phase to a solid surface. Bio-based hydrogel adsorbents are gaining popularity in wastewater treatment due to their versatility in fabrication and modification methods, which include blending, grafting, and crosslinking. Owning to their unique structure and large surface area, modified hydrogels containing reactive groups like amino, hydroxyl, and carboxyl, or functionalized hydrogels with inorganic nanoparticles particularly graphene nanomaterials, have demonstrated promising adsorption capabilities for both inorganic and organic contaminants. Bio-based hydrogels have excellent physicochemical properties and are non-toxic, environmentally friendly, and biodegradable, making them extremely effective at removing contaminants like heavy metal ions, dyes, pharmaceutical pollutants, and organic micropollutants. The versatility of hydrogels allows for various forms to be used, such as films, beads, and nanocomposites, providing flexibility in handling different contaminants like dyes, radionuclides, and heavy metals. Additionally, researchers also have shown the potential for recycling and regenerating post-treatment hydrogels. This approach not only addresses the challenges of wastewater treatment but also offers sustainable and effective solutions for mitigating water pollution.

High-performance ratiometric fluorescence detection and removal of tetracycline in milk based on CDs@ZSM-5:Eu3

Exploring materials with the dual functionality of detecting and removing tetracycline (TC) residues is crucial because of the environmental and health risks posed by antibiotic overuse. This study introduces a dual-emissive luminescent probe, CDs@ZSM-5:Eu3+, created through a solvent-free method combined with subsequent Eu3+ion exchange. The nanocomposite's blue emission, originating from carbon dots (CDs), is quenched by TC via an internal filtering effect, while an antenna effect triggers a strong red fluorescence of a TC-Eu3+chelate. The ratiometric fluorescence changes in CDs@ZSM-5:Eu3+ endow a self-calibrated sensing mechanism for TC, offering a low detection limit of 5.04 nM and a broad detection range of 0.01-50 μM. Demonstrated in real milk samples, the probe exhibits high selectivity and accuracy in detecting TC. The nanocomposite also displayed an impressive TC removal capacity of 238.1 mg g-1 in water, ascribing to the enrichment and electrostatic attraction effects of ZSM-5 toward TC molecules. This research offers a facile strategy for constructing multifunctional zeolite-based hybrids for simultaneous TC detection and removal from aqueous solutions.

Efficient removal of chlortetracycline hydrochloride and doxycycline hydrochloride from aqueous solution by ZIF-67

ZIF-67 nanoparticles were synthesized by a simple method at room temperature and used to remove chlortetracycline hydrochloride (CTC) and doxycycline hydrochloride (DOX) from water. ZIF-67 was characterized by scanning electron microscopy (SEM), transmission electron microscopy (TEM), fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FT-IR), Brunauer-Emmett-Teller (BET) surface area, X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS), thermogravimetry (TGA) and zeta potential analyzer. The morphology and chemical composition of the synthesized ZIF-67 were characterized. The effects of key parameters such as pH, dosage, temperature, contact time, different initial concentrations and coexisting ions on the adsorption behavior were systematically studied. The results of batch adsorption experiments indicate that the adsorption process conforms to the pseudo-second-order kinetic model and Sips model. At 303K, the removal rates of CTC and DOX at 150 mg/L reached 99.16 % and 97.61 %, and the maximum adsorption capacity of CTC and DOX reached 1411.68 and 1073.28 mg/g, respectively. At the same time, ZIF-67 has excellent stability and reusability. Most importantly, the possible adsorption mechanism is proposed by exploring the changes of SEM, TEM, BET and FT-IR characterization results before and after the reaction, which mainly includes pore filling, electrostatic interaction and π-π interaction. The prepared ZIF-67 has a large specific surface area (1495.967 m2 g-1), achieves a high removal rate within a short time frame, and maintains a high removal rate across a wide pH range. These characteristics make ZIF-67 a potentially promising adsorbent for removing antibiotics from aqueous solutions.

Insights on the efficiency and contribution of single active species in photocatalytic degradation of tetracycline: Priority attack active sites, intermediate products and their toxicity evaluation

Photocatalysis has been proven to be an excellent technology for treating antibiotic wastewater, but the impact of each active species involved in the process on antibiotic degradation is still unclear. Therefore, the S-scheme heterojunction photocatalyst Ti3C2/g-C3N4/TiO2 was successfully synthesized using melamine and Ti3C2 as precursors by a one-step calcination method using mechanical stirring and ultrasound assistance. Its formation mechanism was studied in detail through multiple characterizations and work function calculations. The heterojunction photocatalyst not only enabled it to retain active species with strong oxidation and reduction abilities, but also significantly promoted the separation and transfer of photo-generated carriers, exhibiting an excellent degradation efficiency of 94.19 % for tetracycline (TC) within 120 min. Importantly, the priority attack sites, degradation pathways, degradation intermediates and their ecological toxicity of TC under the action of each single active species (·O2-, h+, ·OH) were first positively explored and evaluated through design experiments, Fukui function theory calculations, HPLC-MS, Escherichia coli toxicity experiments, and ECOSAR program. The results indicated that the preferred attack sites of ·O2- on TC were O20, C7, C11, O21, and N25 atoms with high f+ value. The toxicity of intermediates produced by ·O2- was also lower than those produced by h+ and ·OH.

Synthesis of LDH-MgAl and LDH-MgFe composites for the efficient removal of the antibiotic from water

In this study, novel lamellar double hydroxide composites (LDH-MgAl and LDH-MgFe) were synthesized at different metal salt ratios (1:1 to 3:1) and fully characterized using various techniques such as XRD, FTIR, SEM, EDS, and TGA. The resulting LDHs demonstrated a high affinity for efficiently removing tetracycline (TC) antibiotic from water, particularly at a moderate molar ratio of 3:1. This ratio exhibited improved structural characteristics, resulting in better TC uptake from water. The improved performance was supported by the increased abundance of surface functional groups (OH, NO3, CO32-, C-O-C, Fe-O, and Al-O-Al). The TGA analysis established the high stability of the LDHs when subjected to high temperatures. The kinetics of TC adsorption onto LDH fitted with the PSO (R2 = 0.935-0.994) and Avrami (R2 = 0.9528-0.9824) models, while the equilibrium data fitted the Liu and Langmuir isotherm models, with maximum monolayer adsorption capacities of 101.1 mg g-1 and 70.83 mg g-1, respectively-significantly higher than many reported values in the literature. The positive values of ΔH0 and ΔS0 indicate an endothermic process, with TC removal mechanisms influenced by physical interactions, such as hydrogen bonding, electrostatic interaction, and π-cation with the surface functional groups of the LDH adsorbents. These results suggest that LDH-MgAl and LDH-MgFe are promising adsorbents for the removal of TC from water.

Antibiotics removal and antimicrobial resistance control by ozone/peroxymonosulfate-biological activated carbon: A novel treatment process

Biological activated carbon (BAC) is one of the important treatment processes in wastewater and advanced water treatment. However, the BAC process has been reported to have antimicrobial resistance (AMR) risks. In this study, a new BAC-related treatment process was developed to reduce AMR caused by BAC treatment: ozone/peroxymonosulfate-BAC (O3/PMS-BAC). The O3/PMS-BAC showed better treatment performance on the targeted five antibiotics and dissolved organic matter removal than O3-BAC and BAC treatments. The O3/PMS-BAC process had better control over the AMR than the O3-BAC and BAC processes. Specifically, the amount of targeted antibiotic-resistant bacteria in the effluent and biofilm of O3/PMS-BAC was only 0.01-0.03 and 0.11-0.26 times that of the BAC process, respectively. Additionally, the O3/PMS-BAC process removed 1.76 %-62.83 % and 38.14 %-99.27 % more of the targeted ARGs in the effluent and biofilm than the BAC process. The total relative abundance of the targeted 12 ARGs in the O3/PMS-BAC effluent was decreased by 86 % compared to the effluent after BAC treatment. In addition, Proteobacteria and Bacteroidetes were probably the main hosts for transmitting ARGs in this study, and their relative abundance decreased by 9.6 % and 6.0 % in the effluent of the O3/PMS-BAC treatment compared to that in BAC treatment. The relationship analysis revealed that controlling antibiotic discharge was crucial for managing AMR, as antibiotics were closely related to both ARGs and bacteria associated with their emergence. The results showed that the newly developed treatment process could reduce AMR caused by BAC treatment while ensuring effluent quality. Therefore, O3/PMS-BAC is a promising alternative to BAC treatment for future applications.

Utilizing Morphological and Physiological Parameters of Lemna minor for Assessing Tetracyclines' Removal

Antibiotics with significant environmental toxicity, e.g., tetracyclines (TCs), are often used in large quantities worldwide, with 50-80% of the applied dose ending up in the environment. This study aimed to investigate the effects of exposure to tetracycline hydrochloride (TC) and minocycline hydrochloride (MIN) on L. minor. Our research evaluated the phytotoxicity of the TCs by analyzing plant growth and biomass and evaluating assimilation pigment levels and fluorescence. The research was extended with the ability potential of duckweed as a tool for removing TCs from water/wastewater. The results demonstrated that both TCs influenced Ir, Iy, biomass, and photosynthetic efficiency. The uptake of TC and MIN by duckweed was proportional to the concentration in the growth medium. The TC was absorbed more readily, reaching up to 8.09 mg × g-1 of dry weight (DW) at the highest concentration (19.2 mg × L-1), while MIN reached 6.01 mg × g-1 of DW. As indicated, the consequences of the influence of TC on plants were slightly smaller, in comparison to MIN, while the plants could biosorb this drug, even at the lowest tested concentration. This study has shown that using plants for drug biosorption can be an effective standalone or complementary method for water and wastewater treatment.

A sustainable carbon aerogel from waste paper with exceptional performance for antibiotics removal from water

In this work, a sustainable 3D carbon aerogel (AO-WPC) is prepared from waste paper (WP), and used for efficient antibiotics removal from water. The AO-WPC aerogel shows good mechanical property and can recover after 100th of 30 % compression strain. The specific surface area of AO-WPC aerogel is up to 654.58 m2/g. More importantly, this aerogel reveals proper pore size distribution, including micro sized macropores between carbon fibers and intrinsic nano scale mesopores (11.86 nm), which is conducive to remove antibiotics from water. Taking tetracycline (Tc) as an example, the maximum adsorption capacity and adsorption rate of AO-WPC for Tc are as high as 384.6 mg/g and 0.510 g/(mg‧min), respectively, which exhibits significant advantages over most of the recent absorbents, and the adsorption toward Tc reveals good resistance to various environmental factors, including pH, various ions, and dissolved organic matter (DOM). Moreover, good thermal stability enables the AO-WPC aerogel to be regenerated through simple burning, and the adsorption capacity of Tc only decreases by 10.4 % after 10 cycles. Mechanism research shows that hydrogen bonding and π-π electron-donor-acceptor (EDA) interaction play the important role in the adsorption. The excellent mechanical property and adsorption performance imply good practical prospect of the AO-WPC aerogel.

Inside this unique circumstance, this article aims to catch recent advancements in the field of MOFs and the utilizations of MOFs relate to the expulsion of arising contaminations that present huge difficulties to water quality because of their steadiness and possible damage to environments and human wellbeing. Customary water treatment techniques regularly neglect to eliminate these poisons, requiring the advancement of novel methodologies. This study overviews engineering techniques for controlling MOF characteristics for better flexibility, stability, and surface area. A current report on MOFs gathered new perspectives that are amicably discussed in emergent technologies and extreme applications towards environmental sectors. Various applications in many fields that exploit MOFs are being fostered, including gas storage, fluid separation, adsorbents, catalysis, medication delivery, and sensor utilizations. Surface modified of chitosan by TiO2@MWCNT nanohybrid for the efficient removal of organic dyes and antibiotics

Considering the increase in the discharge of industrial effluents containing dyes and antibiotic resistance as a consequence of increasing the prescription and easy distribution of antibiotic drugs at the global level, designing efficient, biodegradable and non-toxic absorbents is necessary to reduce environmental harm effects. Herein, we present a series of novel eco-friendly ternary hybrid nanocomposite hydrogels CS/TiO2@MWCNT (CTM) composed of chitosan (CS), TiO2, and multiwalled carbon nanotube (MWCNT) for removal of methylene blue (MB) and methyl orange (MO) and common antibiotic ciprofloxacin (CIP) in aqueous medium. The combination of MWCNT and TiO2 improves the physicochemical properties of CS hydrogel and increases the adsorption capacity toward pollutants in the presence of different loadings. CTM hydrogel showed a specific surface area of 236.45 m2 g-1 with a pore diameter of 7.89 nm. Adsorption mechanisms were investigated in detail using kinetic, isotherm, and thermodynamic studies of adsorption as well as various spectroscopic techniques. Adsorption of these pollutants by CTM nanocomposite hydrogel occurred using various interactions at different pHs, which showed the obvious dependence of CTM adsorption capacity on pH. Electrostatic attractions, complex formation, π-π stacking and hydrogen bonds played a key role in the adsorption process. The adsorption of MB, MO, and CIP was fitted with the Langmuir isotherm with maximum adsorption capacities of 531.91, 1763.6, and 1510.5 mg g-1, respectively. CTM had a minor decrease in adsorption strength and showed good structural stability even after 8 adsorptions-desorption cycles. The total cost of producing a 1 kg adsorbent was calculated to be $ 450, which helped us determine the economic feasibility of the adsorbent in large-scale applications.

Efficient removal of ciprofloxacin from aqueous solution using Zn-C battery derived graphene oxide enhanced by hydrogen bonding, electrostatic and π-π interaction

In this study, graphene oxide (GO) derived from waste Zinc-Carbon (Zn-C) batteries was proposed for the efficient removal of antibiotics from the aqueous solution. Ciprofloxacin (CIP) antibiotic was selected as a typical contaminants. GO was prepared via an economical and environment-friendly route by using carbon rods from waste Zn-C batteries as the precursor. Characterization techniques were applied to determine the properties of as prepared GO. Effects of pH, contact time, and adsorbent dose on the adsorption were explored, and an optimum condition was established. Adsorption equilibrium was established in just 20 min for maximum removal of CIP (99.0%) at pH 5.7 for the adsorbent dose of 20 mg L-1 and at the initial concentration of CIP 2.0 mg L-1. The rapid and efficient removal of CIP was greatly influenced by the electrostatic attractions, pi-pi interactions and hydrogen bonding on the surface and edge of GO which was also proved by density functional theory (DFT). Langmuir model showed the best fit among the isotherm models and the calculated maximum adsorption capacity (qm) was 419.62 mg g-1 at 30°C. The kinetic studies also revealed that the adsorption process followed the pseudo-second-order model. The endothermic and spontaneous nature of adsorption was evaluated in thermodynamic studies.

Iron slag/activated carbon-electrokinetic system with anolyte recycling for single and mixture heavy metals remediation

The electrokinetic process has been proposed for in-situ soil remediation to minimize excavation work and exposure to hazardous materials. The precipitation of heavy metals in alkaline pH near the cathode is still challenging. Reactive filter media and enhancement agents have been used in electrokinetics to enhance the removal of heavy metals. This study investigated coupling industrial iron slag waste and iron slag-activated carbon reactive filter media with electrokinetic for a single and mixture of heavy metals treatment. Instead of using acid enhancement agents, the anolyte solution was recycled to neutralize the alkaline front at the cathode, reducing the operation cost and chemical use. Experiments were conducted for 2 and 3 weeks at 20 mA electric current. Copper removal increased from 3.11 % to 23 % when iron slag reactive filter media was coupled with electrokinetic. Copper removal increased to 70.14 % in the electrokinetic experiment with iron slag-activated carbon reactive filter media. The copper removal increased to 89.21 % when the anolyte solution was recycled to the cathode compartment. Copper removal reached 93.45 % when the reactive filter media-electrokinetic process with anolyte recirculation was extended to 3 weeks. The reactive filter media- an electrokinetic process with anolyte recycling was evaluated for removing copper, nickel, and zinc mixture, and results revealed 81.1 % copper removal, 89.04 % nickel removal, and 92.31 % zinc removal in a 3-week experiment. The greater nickel and zinc removal is attributed to their higher solubility than copper. The results demonstrated the cost-effectiveness and efficiency of the electrokinetic with iron slag-activated carbon reactive filter media with anolyte recirculation for soil remediation from heavy metals.

Knowledge graph and development hotspots of biochar as an emerging aquatic antibiotic remediator: A scientometric exploration based on VOSviewer and CiteSpace

As an emerging material in the field of environmental remediation, biochar produced by carbonisation of organic solid waste has been widely used in the remediation of antibiotic wastewater due to its environmental friendliness and excellent adsorption properties. This study analyses the current literature in the field in a comprehensive and scientific manner using CiteSpace and VOSviewer technologies. Between 2011 and 2023, a total of 1162 papers were published in this domain, spanning three distinct stages: applied methods, mechanism investigation, and enhanced improvement. The results of keyword clustering indicate that the remediation of antibiotics complexed with multiple pollutants by biochar is the main research topic, followed by the remediation of antibiotics by biochar in combination with other technologies. Furthermore, drawing from current research hotspots in antibiotic remediation using biochar, this study identified the pivotal mechanisms involved: (1) The primary mechanisms by which raw biochar remediates antibiotics include π-π electron donor-acceptor interactions, hydrophobic interactions, electrostatic interactions, hydrogen-bonding, and pore filling. (2) Steam activation, acid/base, metal salt/metal oxide, and clay mineral modification can improve the physical/chemical properties of biochar, enhancing its adsorptive removal of antibiotics. (3) Biochar activated persulfate and degraded antibiotics via free radical pathways (SO4-•, •OH and O2-•) as well as non-free radical pathways (1O2 and electron transfer). In addition, the challenge and prospect of biochar engineering applications for antibiotic remediation lies in improving the main mechanism of antibiotic remediation by biochar. The prospective utilization of biochar in enhancing the remediation of antibiotic-related pollutants holds tremendous value for the future.

Adsorptive removal of norfloxacin from aqueous solutions by Fe/Cu CNS-embedded alginate-carboxymethyl cellulose-chitosan beads

The pervasive application of pharmaceuticals in aquatic environments has acquired much focus owing to their nonbiodegradability and eco-toxicity, which might readily destroy the ecological balance. Developed chitosan-coated Fe-Cu CNS alginate-CMC beads (NBs) were utilized in this study to adsorb the quinolone antibiotic norfloxacin (NOR) from water for the first time. Under ideal conditions (CNOR: 20 mg L-1; sorbent conc.: 2000 mg L-1; sorbent dosage: 0.15 g; interaction time: 300 min; solution pH: 6.0), about 86% NOR removal was achieved through batch mode. The removal performance for NOR was examined concerning pH, ionic strength, and coexisting micropollutants. The greatest NOR removal was attained on NBs with the greatest Langmuir adsorption capacity of 355 mg g-1 due to numerous mechanisms such as sorbent pore filling, electrostatic attraction, π-π attraction and hydrogen bonding. Studies using environmentally significant algae, such as Scenedesmus sp., to analyze the residual toxicity of treated NOR solution revealed a significant reduction in their toxic effects. Current research has demonstrated that nanocomposite beads are an excellent wastewater treatment material with promising industrial applications due to their ease of synthesis, exceptional surface adsorption properties, stability, and environmentally friendly reaction.

Efficient removal of oxytetracycline antibiotic from aqueous media using UV/g-C3N4/Fe3O4 photocatalytic process

Residual pharmaceuticals in the environment are a class of emerging pollutants that endanger human health. Tetracycline's family, including oxytetracycline (OTC), are known as one of the most produced and consumed antibiotics worldwide. The g-C3N4/Fe3O4 nanocomposite with high level of catalytic efficiency features suitable performance in water/wastewater treatment. Therefore, in the present study, this nanocomposite was applied to remove the oxytetracycline from the aqueous environment. In this research study, g-C3N4/Fe3O4 nanocomposite (serving as catalyst) was initially synthesized by a simple hydrothermal method. The effect of key operating parameters such as initial solution pH, dose of catalyst, contact time and initial concentration of OTC in aqueous solutions was investigated under UV irradiation. In addition, COD and TOC tests, the kinetics and the effect of radical scavengers on the applied photocatalytic process were all evaluated. The maximum removal efficiency of OTC (99.8 %) was achieved under the following conditions: neutral solution pH 7; catalyst dose, 0.7 g/L; and an initial OTC concentration of 5 mg/L. The data showed that the kinetics of the reaction followed the first-order model with R2 of 0.9755. The respective COD and TOC efficiency values for the applied photocatalytic process were determined to be 87 and 59 %, respectively. In addition, the lowest removal efficiency of OTC was observed in the presence of tert-butanol radical scavengers, and OH radicals played a main role. The UV/g-C3N4/Fe3O4 photocatalytic process proved to be highly efficient for the removal of OTC antibiotic and could be potentially applied for the removal of other pollutants from aqueous solutions.

New insights on the decolorization of waste flows by Saccharomyces cerevisiae strain - A systematic review

One of the common causes of water pollution is the presence of toxic dye-based effluents, which can pose a serious threat to the ecosystem and human health. The application of Saccharomyces cerevisiae (S. cerevisiae) for wastewater decolorization has been widely investigated due to their efficient removal and eco-friendly treatments. This review attempts to create an awareness of different forms and methods of using Saccharomyces cerevisiae (S. cerevisiae) for wastewater decolorization through a systematic approach. Overall, some suggestions on classification of dyes and related environmental/health problems, and treatment methods are discussed. Besides, the mechanisms of dye removal by S. cerevisiae including biosorption, bioaccumulation, and biodegradation and cell immobilization methods such as adsorption, covalent binding, encapsulation, entrapment, and self-aggregation are discussed. This review would help to inspire the exploration of more creative methods for applications and modification of S. cerevisiae and its further practical applications.

Disclosing the intrinsic nature of efficient removal of antibiotics in N/S dual-doped porous carbon-based materials: The manipulation of internal electric field

N/S co-doping has emerged as a prevailing strategy for carbon-based adsorbents to facilitate the antibiotic removal efficiency. Nevertheless, the underlying interplay among N, S, and their adjacent vacancy defects remains overlooked. Herein, we present a novel in situ strategy for fabricating pyridinic-N dominated and S dual-doped porous carbon adsorbent with rich vacancy defects (VNSC). The experimental results revealed that N (acting as the electron donor) and S (acting as the electron acceptor) form an internal electric field (IEF), with a stronger IEF generated between pyridinic-N and S, while their adjacent vacancy defects activate carbon π electrons, thus enhancing the charge transfer of the IEF. Density functional theory (DFT) calculations further demonstrated that the rich charge transfer in the IEF facilitated the π-π electron donor-acceptor (EDA) interaction between VNSC and tetracycline (TC) as well as norfloxacin (NOR), and thus is the key to adsorption performance of VNSC. Consequently, VNSC exhibited high adsorption capacities toward TC (573.1 mg g-1) and NOR (517.0 mg g-1), and its potential for environmental applications was demonstrated by interference, environmentally relevant concentrations, fixed-bed column, and regeneration tests. This work discloses the natures of adsorption capacity for N/S dual-doped carbon-based materials for antibiotics.

A novel alginate-embedded magnetic biochar-anoxygenic photosynthetic bacteria composite microspheres for multipollutant removal: Mechanisms of photo-bioelectrochemical enhancement and excellent reusability performance

Existing wastewater treatment technologies face the key challenge of simultaneously removing emerging contaminants and nutrients from wastewater efficiently, with a simplified technological process and minimized operational costs. In this study, a novel alginate-embedded magnetic biochar-anoxygenic photosynthetic bacteria composite microspheres (CA-MBC-PSB microspheres) was prepared for efficient, cost-effective and one-step removal of antibiotics and NH4+-N from wastewater. Our results demonstrated that the CA-MBC-PSB microspheres removed 97.23% of sulfadiazine (SDZ) within 7 h and 91% of NH4+-N within 12 h, which were 21.23% and 38% higher than those achieved by pure calcium alginate-Rhodopseudomonas palustris microspheres (53% and 45.7%), respectively. The enhanced SDZ and NH4+-N removal were attributed to the enhanced photoheterotrophic metabolism and excretion of extracellular photosensitive active substances from R. Palustris through the photo-bioelectrochemical interaction between R. Palustris and magnetic biochar. The long-term pollutants removal performance of the CA-MBC-PSB microspheres was not deteriorated but continuously improved with increasing ruse cycles with a simultaneous removal efficiency of 99% for SDZ and 92% for NH4+-N after three cycles. The excellent stability and reusability were due to the fact that calcium alginate acts as an encapsulating agent preventing the loss and contamination of R. palustris biomass. The CA-MBC-PSB microspheres also exhibited excellent performance for simultaneous removal of SDZ (89% in 7 h) and NH4+-N (90.7% in 12 h) from the secondary effluent of wastewater treatment plant, indicating the stable and efficient performance of CA-MBC-PSB microspheres in practical wastewater treatment.

Bioadsorption, bioaccumulation and biodegradation of antibiotics by algae and their association with algal physiological state and antibiotic physicochemical properties

Bioadsorption, bioaccumulation and biodegradation processes in algae, play an important role in the biomagnification of antibiotics, or other organic pollutants, in aquatic food chains. In this study, the bioadsorption, bioaccumulation and biodegradation of norfloxacin [NFX], sulfamethazine [SMZ] and roxithromycin [RTM]) is investigated using a series of culture experiments. Chlorella vulgaris was exposed to these antibiotics with incubation periods of 24, 72, 120 and 168 h. Results show the bioadsorption concentration of antibiotics in extracellular matter increases with increasing alkaline phosphatase activity (AKP/ALP). The bioaccumulation concentrations of NFX, SMZ and RTM within cells significantly increase after early exposure, and subsequently decrease. There is a significant positive antibiotics correlation to superoxide dismutase (SOD), the photosynthetic electron transport rate (ETR) and maximum fluorescence after dark adaptation (Fv/Fm), while showing a negative correlation to malondialdehyde (MDA). The biodegradation percentages (Pb) of NFX, SMZ and RTM range from 39.3 - 97.2, 41.3 - 90.5, and 9.3 - 99.9, respectively, and significantly increase with increasing Fv/Fm, density and chlorophyll-a. The accumulation of antibiotics in extracellular and intracellular substances of C. vulgaris is affected by antibiotic biodegradation processes associated with cell physiological state. The results succinctly explain relationships between algal growth during antibiotics exposure and the bioadsorption and bioaccumulation of these antibiotics in cell walls and cell matter. The findings draw an insightful understanding of the accumulation of antibiotics in algae and provide a scientific basis for the better utilization of algae treatment technology in antibiotic contaminated wastewaters. Under low dose exposures, the biomagnification of antibiotics in algae is affected by bioadsorption, bioaccumulation and biodegradation.

A review on carbon-based biowaste and organic polymer materials for sustainable treatment of sulfonamides from pharmaceutical wastewater

Frequent detection of sulfonamides (SAs) pharmaceuticals in wastewater has necessitated the discovery of suitable technology for their sustainable remediation. Adsorption has been widely investigated due to its effectiveness, simplicity, and availability of various adsorbent materials from natural and artificial sources. This review highlighted the potentials of carbon-based adsorbents derived from agricultural wastes such as lignocellulose, biochar, activated carbon, carbon nanotubes graphene materials as well as organic polymers such as chitosan, molecularly imprinted polymers, metal, and covalent frameworks for SAs removal from wastewater. The promising features of these materials including higher porosity, rich carbon-content, robustness, good stability as well as ease of modification have been emphasized. Thus, the materials have demonstrated excellent performance towards the SAs removal, attributed to their porous nature that provided sufficient active sites for the adsorption of SAs molecules. The modification of physico-chemical features of the materials have been discussed as efficient means for enhancing their adsorption and reusable performance. The article also proposed various interactive mechanisms for the SAs adsorption. Lastly, the prospects and challenges have been highlighted to expand the knowledge gap on the application of the materials for the sustainable removal of the SAs.

Occurrence and fate of pharmaceutical pollutants in wastewater: Insights on ecotoxicity, health risk, and state-of-the-art removal

Pharmaceutical active compound (PhAC) residues are considered an emerging micropollutant that enters the aquatic environment and causes harmful ecotoxicity. The significant sources of PhACs in the environment include the pharmaceutical industry, hospital streams, and agricultural wastes (animal husbandry). Recent investigations demonstrated that wastewater treatment plants (WWTPs) are an important source of PhACs discharging ecosystems. Several commonly reported that PhACs are detected in a range level from ng L-1 to μg L-1 concentration in WWTP effluents. These compounds can have acute and chronic adverse impacts on natural wildlife, including flora and fauna. The approaches for PhAC removals in WWTPs include bioremediation, adsorption (e.g., biochar, chitosan, and graphene), and advanced oxidation processes (AOPs). Overall, adsorption and AOPs can effectively remove PhACs from wastewater aided by oxidizing radicals. Heterogeneous photocatalysis has also proved to be a sustainable solution. Bioremediation approaches such as membrane bioreactors (MBRs), constructed wetlands (CWs), and microalgal-based systems were applied to minimize pharmaceutical pollution. Noteworthy, applying MBRs has illustrated high removal efficiencies of up to 99%, promising prospective future. However, WWTPs should be combined with advanced solutions, e.g., AOPs/photodegradation, microalgae-bacteria consortia, etc., to treat and minimize their accumulation. More effective and novel technologies (e.g., new generation bioremediation) for PhAC degradation must be investigated and specially designed for a low-cost and full-scale. Investigating green and eco-friendly PhACs with advantages, e.g., low persistence, no bioaccumulation, less or non-toxicity, and environmentally friendly, is also necessary.

Characterization and removal mechanism of fluoroquinolone-bioremediation by fungus Cladosporium cladosporioides 11 isolated from aquacultural sediments

Antibiotics have been widely detected in aquatic environments, and fungal biotransformation receives considerable attention for antibiotic bioremediation. Here, a fungus designated Cladosporium cladosporioides 11 (CC11) with effective capacity to biotransform fluoroquinolones was isolated from aquaculture pond sediments. Enrofloxacin (ENR), ciprofloxacin (CIP) and ofloxacin (OFL) were considerably abated by CC11, and the antibacterial activities of the fluoroquinolones reduced significantly after CC11 treatment. Transcriptome analysis showed the removal of ENR, CIP and OFL by CC11 is a process of enzymatic degradation and biosorption which consists well with ligninolytic enzyme activities and sorption experiments under the same conditions. Additionally, CC11 significantly removed ENR in zebrafish culture water and reduced the residue of ENR in zebrafish. All these results evidenced the potential of CC11 as a novel environmentally friendly process for the removal of fluoroquinolones from aqueous systems and reduce fluoroquinolone residues in aquatic organisms.

Long-term exposure of Allonais inaequalis to a mixture of antibiotics in freshwater and synthetic wastewater matrices: Reproduction, recovery, and swimming responses

Antibiotics from sulfonamide, fluoroquinolone, and diaminopyrimidine classes are widely used in human and veterinary medicine, and their combined occurrence in the aquatic environment is increasing around the world. In parallel, the understanding of how mixtures of these compounds affect non-target species from tropical freshwaters is scarce. Thus, this work aimed to study the long-term reproductive, recovery, and swimming effects of mixtures of 12 antibiotics from three different classes (up to 10 μg L-1 ) added to freshwater (FWM) and synthetic wastewater (SWM) matrices on freshwater worm Allonais inaequalis. Results revealed that at the reproduction level, the exposure to antibiotics in the SWM matrix does not cause a significant toxic effect on species after 10 days. On the other hand, exposures to initial dose mixtures (10 μg L-1 each) in FWM caused a significant reduction of offspring by 19.2%. In addition, recovery bioassays (10 days in an antibiotic-free environment) suggested that A. inaequalis has reduced offspring production due to previous exposure to antibiotic mixtures in both matrices. Furthermore, despite slight variation in swimming speed over treatments, no significant differences were pointed out. Regarding antibiotics in the water matrices after 10-day exposures, the highest concentrations were up to 2.7, 7.8, and 4.2 μg L-1 for antibiotics from sulfonamide, fluoroquinolone, and diaminopyrimidine classes, respectively. These findings suggest that a species positioned between primary producers and secondary consumers may experience late reproductive damage even in an antibiotic-free zone, after previous 10-day exposure to antibiotic mixtures. PRACTITIONER POINTS: A mixture of sulfonamide, fluoroquinolone, and diaminopyrimidine antibiotics in freshwater affects the offspring production of A. inaequalis after 10 days. After the 10-day antibiotic exposure, the reproduction of A. inaequalis remains affected in an antibiotic-free environment over the recovery period. The swimming speed of the worms does not change after 10 days of exposure to the antibiotic mixture. The concentration of dissolved solids can limit the natural degradation of sulfonamide, fluoroquinolone, and diaminopyrimidine antibiotics in the aquatic environment.

Efficacy of new generation biosorbents for the sustainable treatment of antibiotic residues and antibiotic resistance genes from polluted waste effluent

Antimicrobials are frequently used in both humans and animals for the treatment of bacterially-generated illnesses. Antibiotic usage has increased for more than 40% from last 15 years globally per day in both human populations and farm animals leading to the large-scale discharge of antibiotic residues into wastewater. Most antibiotics end up in sewer systems, either directly from industry or healthcare systems, or indirectly from humans and animals after being partially metabolized or broken down following consumption. To prevent additional antibiotic compound pollution, which eventually impacts on the spread of antibiotic resistance, it is crucial to remove antibiotic residues from wastewater. Antibiotic accumulation and antibiotic resistance genes cannot be effectively and efficiently eliminated by conventional sewage treatment plants. Because of their high energy requirements and operating costs, many of the available technologies are not feasible. However, the biosorption method, which uses low-cost biomass as the biosorbent, is an alternative technique to potentially address these problems. An extensive literature survey focusing on developments in the field was conducted using English language electronic databases, such as PubMed, Google Scholar, Pubag, Google books, and ResearchGate, to understand the relative value of the available antibiotic removal methods. The predominant techniques for eliminating antibiotic residues from wastewater were categorized and defined by example. The approaches were contrasted, and the benefits and drawbacks were highlighted. Additionally, we included a few antibiotics whose removal from aquatic environments has been the subject of extensive research. Lastly, a few representative publications were identified that provide specific information on the removal rates attained by each technique. This review provides evidence that biosorption of antibiotic residues from biological waste using natural biosorbent materials is an affordable and effective technique for eliminating antibiotic residues from wastewater.

Highly efficient adsorption of ciprofloxacin from aqueous solutions by waste cation exchange resin-based activated carbons: Performance, mechanism, and theoretical calculation

This study focused on the preparation of a highly efficient activated carbon adsorbent from waste cation exchange resins through one-step carbonization to remove ciprofloxacin (CIP) from aqueous solutions. Scanning electron microscopy, X-ray diffraction, Fourier-transform infrared spectrometry, and X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy were used to characterize the physicochemical properties of the carbonized materials. The CIP removal efficiency, influencing factors, and adsorption mechanisms of CIP on the carbonized resins were investigated. Density functional theory (DFT) computations were performed to elucidate the adsorption mechanisms. The CIP removal reached 93 % when the adsorbent dosage was 300 mg/L at 25 °C. The adsorption capacity of the carbonized resins to CIP gradually decreased with an increasing pH from 3.0 to 7.0 and sharply declined with a pH from 7.0 to 11.0. The adsorption process better fitted by the pseudo second-order kinetic and Langmuir models, indicating that the interaction between CIP and the carbonized resins was monolayer adsorption. The maximum adsorption capacity fitted by the Langmuir model was 384.4 mg/g at 25 °C. Microstructural analysis showed that the adsorption of CIP on the carbonized resins was a joint effect of H-bonding, ion exchange, and graphite-N adsorption. Computational results signified the strong H-bonding and ion exchange interactions existed between CIP and carbonized resins. The high adsorption and reusability suggest that waste cation exchange resin-based activated carbons can be used as an effective and reusable adsorbent for removing CIP from aqueous solutions.

Broad Spectral Response FeOOH/BiO2-x Photocatalyst with Efficient Charge Transfer for Enhanced Photo-Fenton Synergistic Catalytic Activity

In this work, to promote the separation of photogenerated carriers, prevent the catalyst from photo-corrosion, and improve the photo-Fenton synergistic degradation of organic pollutants, the coating structure of FeOOH/BiO2-x rich in oxygen vacancies was successfully synthesized by a facile and environmentally friendly two-step process of hydrothermal and chemical deposition. Through a series of degradation activity tests of synthesized materials under different conditions, it was found that FeOOH/BiO2-x demonstrated outstanding organic pollutant degradation activity under visible and near-infrared light when hydrogen peroxide was added. After 90 min of reaction under photo-Fenton conditions, the degradation rate of Methylene Blue by FeOOH/BiO2-x was 87.4%, significantly higher than the degradation efficiency under photocatalysis (60.3%) and Fenton (49.0%) conditions. The apparent rate constants of FeOOH/BiO2-x under photo-Fenton conditions were 2.33 times and 3.32 times higher than photocatalysis and Fenton catalysis, respectively. The amorphous FeOOH was tightly coated on the layered BiO2-x, which significantly increased the specific surface area and the number of active sites of the composites, and facilitated the improvement of the separation efficiency of the photogenerated carriers and the prevention of photo-corrosion of BiO2-x. The analysis of the mechanism of photo-Fenton synergistic degradation clarified that ·OH, h+, and ·O2- are the main active substances involved in the degradation of pollutants. The optimal degradation conditions were the addition of the FeOOH/BiO2-x composite catalyst loaded with 20% Fe at a concentration of 0.5 g/L, the addition of hydrogen peroxide at a concentration of 8 mM, and an initial pH of 4. This outstanding catalytic system offers a fresh approach to the creation and processing of iron-based photo-Fenton catalysts by quickly and efficiently degrading various organic contaminants.

Fluorescence sensor based on optimized quantum yield manganese-carbon polymer dots and smartphone-integrated sensing platform for tetracycline detection

The one-step synthesis of Mn-doped carbon quantum dots (Mn-CPDs) with a high quantum yield (QY = 45%) is reported using the microwave-assisted method. Subsequently, Mn-CPDs were successfully combined with Eu3+ ions to construct an Eu3+@Mn-CPDs fluorescence sensor. The presence of tetracycline (TC) induced a transition of fluorescence emission from blue (434 nm) to red (618 nm), and a robust linear relationship was observed between the ratio of F618 nm / F434 nm and the TC concentration (5 - 50 nmol/L), with a limit of detection (LOD) of 5.76 nmol/L. The underlying mechanism of Eu3+@Mn-CPDs and TC sensing is unveiled as a synergistic effect involving inner filter effect (IFE) and concurrent interactions. Notably, the smartphone-integrated sensing platform based on Eu3+@Mn-CPDs enables rapid and quantitative TC detection within a short time (< 30 s) by monitoring fluorescence color changes, achieving high-detection sensitivities (with a LOD of 6.18 nmol/L). This versatile and efficient sensing platform demonstrates its potential for the determination of TC concentrations in milk, honey, and tap water samples.

Constructing N,S co-doped network biochar confined CoFe2O4 magnetic nanoparticles adsorbent: Insights into the synergistic and competitive adsorption of Pb2+ and ciprofloxacin

To solve the problem of biochar lack of adsorption sites for heavy metal ions and the difficulty of recycling, CoFe2O4 magnetic nanoparticles confined in nitrogen, sulfur co-doped 3D network biochar matrix (C-CoFe2O4/N,S-BC) was designed and fabricated successfully. The obtained C-CoFe2O4/N,S-BC displays remarkable adsorption performance for both Pb2+ and ciprofloxacin (CIP) removal at the single or binary system due to the role of N,S as metal ion anchoring compared to the N,S-free sample (CoFe2O4/BC). N,S co-doped BC not only participates in adsorption reaction but also effectively inhibites the agglomeration of CoFe2O4 nanoparticles and increases the active sites as a carrier at the same time. In the single system, CoFe2O4/N,S-BC demonstrates a fast adsorption rate (equilibrium time: 30 min) and high adsorption capacity (224.77 mg g-1 for Pb2+, 400.11 mg g-1 for CIP) towards Pb2+ and CIP. The adsorption process is befitted pseudo-second-order model, and the equilibrium data are in great pertinence with Langmuir model. In the binary system, the maximum adsorption capacity of CoFe2O4/N,S-BC for Pb2+ and CIP is 244.80 mg g-1 (CIP: 10.00 mg L-1) and 418.42 mg g-1 (Pb2+: 10.00 mg L-1), respectively. The adsorption mechanism is discussed based on the experimental results. Moreover, C-CoFe2O4/N,S-BC shows good practical water treatment capacity, anti-interference ability and stable reusability (the removal efficiency＞80% after eight cycles). The rapid, multifunctional, reusable, and easily separable adsorption properties make C-CoFe2O4/N,S-BC promising for efficient environmental remediation. This study also offers a viable method for the construction of adsorption material for complex wastewater treatment.

Novel insights into the rhizosphere and seawater microbiome of Zostera marina in diverse mariculture zones

BACKGROUND

Seagrasses offer various ecosystem services and possess high levels of primary productivity. However, the development of mariculture has affected the homeostasis of seagrass meadow ecosystems. Plant-microbiome associations are essential for seagrasses health, but little is known about the role of environmental microbiomes and how they affect seagrass in a mariculture environment. In this study, we investigated the influence of mariculture on the rhizosphere and seawater microbiome surrounding Zostera marina and focused on the bacterial, eukaryotic, and fungal components in the composition, diversity, metabolism, and responses to mariculture-related environmental factors.

RESULTS

Significant differences in the composition, richness, diversity, and internal relations of the bacterial community between the seawater and rhizosphere sediment surrounding Z. marina were observed, while differences in the eukaryotic and fungal communities were less significant. More complex bacterial and fungal co-occurrence networks were found in the seawater and rhizosphere sediment of the Saccharina japonica (SJ) and sea cucumber (SC) culture zones. The seawater in the SJ zone had higher levels of dissimilatory and assimilatory nitrate reduction, denitrification, and nitrogen fixation processes than the other three zones. The assimilatory sulfate reduction enzymes were higher in the rhizosphere sediments of the SJ zone than in the other three zones. Tetracycline, sulfonamide, and diaminopyrimidine resistance genes were enriched in the mariculture SJ and SC zones.

CONCLUSIONS

Our findings might contribute to a better understanding of the effects of mariculture on the seagrass and the meadow ecosystems and thus revealing their potential operating mechanisms. These insights may serve to raise awareness of the effects of human activities on natural ecosystems, regulation of antibiotic usage, and environmental restoration. Video Abstract.

Carbon-Supported Nanocomposite Synthesis, Characterization, and Application as an Efficient Adsorbent for Ciprofloxacin and Amoxicillin

The existence of antibiotics in the environment has recently raised serious concerns about their possible hazards to human health and the water ecosystem. In the current study, an activated carbon-supported nanocomposite, AC-CoFe2O3, was synthesized by a coprecipitation method, characterized, and then applied to adsorb different drugs from water. The synthesized composites were characterized by using energy-dispersive X-ray spectroscopy, Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy, Brunauer-Emmett-Teller plots, and scanning electron microscopy. The adsorption of both Ciprofloxacin (Cipro) and Amoxicillin (Amoxi) antibiotics on the composite followed the pseudo-second-order kinetic model (R2 = 0.9981 and 0.9974 mg g-1 min-1, respectively). Langmuir isotherm was the best-fit model showing 312.17 and 217.76 mg g-1 adsorption capacities for Ciprofloxacin and Amoxicillin, respectively, at 333 K. The negative Gibbs free energy (ΔG°) specified the spontaneity of the method. The positive change in the enthalpy (ΔH) indicated that the adsorption process was assisted by higher temperatures. The different optimized parameters were pH, contact time, adsorbent weight, concentration, and temperature. The maximum adsorption of Cipro was found to be 98.41% at pH 12, while for Amoxi, it was 89.09% at pH 2 at 333 K. The drugs were then successfully determined from natural water samples at optimized conditions using these nanocomposites.

Boosting Peroxymonosulfate Activation via CoS/MXene Nanocomposite for Rhodamine B Degradation under Simulated Sunlight Irradiation

Cobalt-based heterogeneous catalysts have been demonstrated as an effective PMS activator for pollutant degradation. However, the limited active sites on their surface lead to an unsatisfactory catalytic efficiency. Immobilizing the catalysts on the support material can be a promising modification strategy to solve this problem. MXene has been considered as an ideal support material due to its unique morphology and physicochemical properties. Therefore, in this work, the CoS-loaded Ti3 C2 MXene (CoS/Ti3 C2 MXene) catalyst for peroxymonosulfate (PMS) activation was successfully synthesized through a solvothermal method. Under the simulated sunlight irradiation, the CoS/Ti3 C2 MXene+PMS system achieved an impressive efficiency in removing the organic pollutant rhodamine B (97.2 % in 10 min). Among the tested catalysts, 30 %-CoS-TC stood out, exhibited a broad pH tolerance from 5 to 9 and maintained robust degradation performance over cycles. Upon detailed analysis, the degradation mechanism revealed the collaborative action dominated by singlet oxygen, and supplemented by photogenerated holes and superoxide radicals in the process. Notably, the sandwich-like structure of MXene played a pivotal role, not only dispersing the CoS particles evenly on the surface of catalysts, but also providing ample space for the active sites, thus accelerating the PMS activation for the degradation of rhodamine B. Overall, this study developed an innovative MXene-based catalyst for the application of environmental remediation.

Sustainable development and analysis of a novel bio-derived (biochar) nanocomposite for the remediation of carbamazepine from aqueous solution

The presence of pharmaceutical compounds in aqueous environments has become a growing concern due to their potential adverse effects on ecosystems and human health. In this work, synthesis of a novel bio based nanocomposite using a biowaste, palm seed is employed for the preparation of biochar. The bio derived nanocomposite consist of polypyrrole (Ppy), graphene oxide (GO), and biochar, is employed for the Carbamazepine (CBZ) removal. The synthesized nanocomposite, Ppy-GO-Biochar, is characterized using various analytical techniques. The characterization results confirmed the successful synthesis of the Ppy-GO-Biochar nanocomposite with the desired morphology and structural properties. The effect of variables is investigated and the optimum conditions are found as: pH (7.8), adsorbent dosage (1.4 g/L), agitation speed (200 rpm) and temperature (39.5 °C). The results demonstrated that a removal efficiency of over 97.74% and uptake of 45.045 mg/g is achieved for CBZ. Furthermore, the CBZ removal followed pseudo-second-order, indicating chemisorption as the predominant mechanism. The CBZ sorption equilibrium is well represented by Langmuir and Freundlich isotherm. Thermodynamic results show that CBZ sorption is endothermic and spontaneous. Mechanism of CBZ sorption using the synthesized nanocomposite follows π-π interaction and electrostatic attraction. Molecular docking studies were also performed for the sorption of CBZ.

Novel insights into carbon nanomaterials enhancing anammox for nitrogen removal: Effects and mechanisms

Carbon nanomaterials (CNMs) possess the properties including large specific surface area, high porosity, and stable chemical structures, presenting significant application advantages in wastewater treatment. Indeed, CNMs are considered to be added to anammox systems to strengthen anammox function, especially to resolve the challenge of anammox technology, i.e., the slow growth rate of anammox bacteria, as well as its high environmental sensitivity. This paper systematically reviews the promotion effects and mechanisms of CNMs on the nitrogen removal performance of anammox system. Among the zero-, one-, and two-dimensional CNMs, two-dimensional CNMs have best promoting effect on the nitrogen removal performance of anammox system due to its excellent conductivity and abundant functional groups. Then, the promotion effects of CNMs on anammox process are summarized from the perspective of anammox activity and bacteria abundance. Furthermore, CNMs not only enhance the anammox process, but also stimulate the coupling of denitrification pathways with anammox, as well as the improvement of system operational stability (alleviating the inhibitions of low temperature and pH fluctuation), thus contributing to the promoted nitrogen removal performance. Essentially, CNMs are capable of facilitating microbial immobilization and electron transfer, which favor to improve the efficiency and stability of anammox process. Finally, this review highlights the gap in knowledge and future work, aiming to provide a deeper understanding of how CNMs can strengthen the anammox system and provide a novel perspective for the engineering of the anammox process.

Insights on the Synthesis of Al-MCM-41 with Optimized Si/Al Ratio for High-Performance Antibiotic Adsorption

Studies indicate that approximately two-thirds of the rivers of the world are contaminated by pharmaceutical compounds, especially antibiotics and hormones. Data reported by the World Health Organization (WHO, 2015) revealed an increase of 65% in antibiotic consumption between 2000 and 2015, with a worldwide increase of 200% expected up to 2030. Environmental contamination by antibiotics and their metabolites can cause the alteration of bacterial genes, leading to the generation of superbacteria. In this work, adsorption was explored as a strategy to mitigate antibiotic contamination, proposing the use of the Al-MCM-41 mesoporous material as an efficient and high-capacity adsorbent. Evaluation of the influence of the synthesis parameters enabled understanding of the main variables affecting the adsorption capacity of Al-MCM-41 for the removal of a typical antibiotic, amoxicillin (AMX). It was found that the adsorbent composition and specific surface area were the main factors that should be optimized in order to obtain the highest AMX removal capacity. Using statistical tools, the best Si/Al ratio in Al-MCM-41 was found to be 10.5, providing an excellent AMX uptake of 132.2 mg per gram of adsorbent. The Si/Al ratio was the most significant factor affecting the adsorption. The cation-π interactions increased with an increase of the Al content, while the interactions involving silanols (Yoshida H-bonding and dipole-dipole hydrogen bridges) decreased.

MXenes vs. clays: emerging and traditional 2D layered nanoarchitectonics

Although MXene materials are considered an emerging research topic, they are receiving considerable interest because, like metals and graphene, they are good electronic conductors but with the particularity that they have a marked hydrophilic character. Having a structural organization and properties close to those of clay minerals (natural silicates typically with a lamellar morphology), they are sometimes referred to as "conducting clays" and exhibit colloidal, surface and intercalation properties also similar to those of clay minerals. The present contribution aims to inform and discuss the nature of MXenes in comparison with clay phyllosilicates, taking into account their structural analogies, outstanding surface properties and advanced applications. The current in-depth understanding of clay minerals may represent a basis for the future development of MXene-derived nanoarchitectures. Comparative examples of the preparation, and studies on the properties and applications of various nanoarchitectures based on clays and MXenes have been included in the present work.

Water, Water Everywhere, but Every Drop Unique: Challenges in the Science to Understand the Role of Contaminants of Emerging Concern in the Management of Drinking Water Supplies

The protection and management of water resources continues to be challenged by multiple and ongoing factors such as shifts in demographic, social, economic, and public health requirements. Physical limitations placed on access to potable supplies include natural and human-caused factors such as aquifer depletion, aging infrastructure, saltwater intrusion, floods, and drought. These factors, although varying in magnitude, spatial extent, and timing, can exacerbate the potential for contaminants of concern (CECs) to be present in sources of drinking water, infrastructure, premise plumbing and associated tap water. This monograph examines how current and emerging scientific efforts and technologies increase our understanding of the range of CECs and drinking water issues facing current and future populations. It is not intended to be read in one sitting, but is instead a starting point for scientists wanting to learn more about the issues surrounding CECs. This text discusses the topical evolution CECs over time (Section 1), improvements in measuring chemical and microbial CECs, through both analysis of concentration and toxicity (Section 2) and modeling CEC exposure and fate (Section 3), forms of treatment effective at removing chemical and microbial CECs (Section 4), and potential for human health impacts from exposure to CECs (Section 5). The paper concludes with how changes to water quantity, both scarcity and surpluses, could affect water quality (Section 6). Taken together, these sections document the past 25 years of CEC research and the regulatory response to these contaminants, the current work to identify and monitor CECs and mitigate exposure, and the challenges facing the future.

A mini review of recent progress in the removal of emerging contaminants from pharmaceutical waste using various adsorbents

The presence of emerging contaminants (ECs) originating from pharmaceutical waste in water, wastewater, and marine ecosystems at various geographical locations has been clearly publicised. This review paper presents an overview of current monitoring data on the occurrences and distributions of ECs in coastal ecosystem, tap water, surface water, ground water, treated sewage effluents, and other sources. Technological advancements for EC removal are also presented, which include physical, chemical, biological, and hybrid treatments. Adsorption remains the most effective method to remove ECs from water bodies. Various types of adsorbents, such as activated carbons, biochars, nanoadsorbents (carbon nanotubes and graphene), ordered mesoporous carbons, molecular imprinting polymers, clays, zeolites, and metal-organic frameworks have been extensively used for removing ECs from water sources and wastewater. Extensive findings on adsorptive performances, process efficiency, reusability properties, and other related information are thoroughly discussed in this mini review.

Occurrence, toxicity, impact and removal of selected non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAIDs): A review

Non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAIDs) are among the most frequently used pharmaceuticals for human therapy, pet therapeutics, and veterinary feeds, enabling them to enter into water sources such as wastewater, soil and sediment, and seawater. The control of NSAIDs has led to the advent of the novel materials for treatment techniques. Herein, we review the occurrence, impact and toxicity of NSAIDs against aquatic microorganisms, plants and humans. Typical NSAIDs, e.g., ibuprofen, ketoprofen, diclofenac, naproxen and aspirin were detected at high concentrations in wastewater up to 2,747,000 ng L-1. NSAIDs in water could cause genotoxicity, endocrine disruption, locomotive disorders, body deformations, organs damage, and photosynthetic corruption. Considering treatment methods, among adsorbents for removal of NSAIDs from water, metal-organic frameworks (10.7-638 mg g-1) and advanced porous carbons (7.4-400 mg g-1) were the most robust. Therefore, these carbon-based adsorbents showed promise in efficiency for the treatment of NSAIDs.

Adsorptive Membranes Incorporating Ionic Liquids (ILs), Deep Eutectic Solvents (DESs) or Graphene Oxide (GO) for Metal Salts Extraction from Aqueous Feed

Water scarcity is a significant concern, particularly in arid regions, due to the rapid growth in population, industrialization, and climate change. Seawater desalination has emerged as a conventional and reliable solution for obtaining potable water. However, conventional membrane-based seawater desalination has drawbacks, such as high energy consumption resulting from a high-pressure requirement, as well as operational challenges like membrane fouling and high costs. To overcome these limitations, it is crucial to enhance the performance of membranes by increasing their efficiency, selectivity, and reducing energy consumption and footprint. Adsorptive membranes, which integrate adsorption and membrane technologies, offer a promising approach to address the drawbacks of standalone membranes. By incorporating specific materials into the membrane matrix, composite membranes have demonstrated improved permeability, selectivity, and reduced pressure requirements, all while maintaining effective pollutant rejection. Researchers have explored different adsorbents, including emerging materials such as ionic liquids (ILs), deep eutectic solvents (DESs), and graphene oxide (GO), for embedding into membranes and utilizing them in various applications. This paper aims to discuss the existing challenges in the desalination process and focus on how these materials can help overcome these challenges. It will also provide a comprehensive review of studies that have reported the successful incorporation of ILs, DESs, and GO into membranes to fabricate adsorptive membranes for desalination. Additionally, the paper will highlight both the current and anticipated challenges in this field, as well as present prospects, and provide recommendations for further advancements.

The erythromycin sorption removal at environmentally relevant concentration based on molecular imprinted polymer: Performance and mechanism

The antibiotic pollution emerged in different environments has raised a great concern. Adsorption is an effective method to solve the problem. However, conventional adsorbents are not always efficient for antibiotic removal with interferences. Therefore, in this study, molecularly imprinted polymer (EMIP) with selective adsorption ability was prepared to remove a typical antibiotic-erythromycin (ERY) at environmentally relevant concentration. The specific surface area of EMIP was 265.62 m2/g with large pore volume, small pore size and hydrophobic surface. The adsorption capacity of EMIP was increased from 211.08 to 4015.51 μg/g when the concentration of ERY was increased from 5.00 to 100.00 μg/L. The isothermal adsorption process was fitted well with the Langmuir model. The adsorption kinetic could be well described by the pseudo-second-order model. With co-existing of interferences, the imprinting factor for ERY was 2.57, which demonstrated EMIP had good adsorption selectivity. After five consecutive adsorption-desorption experiments, the adsorption capacity of EMIP was still over 80%. The results of molecular dynamic simulation showed the adsorption energy between ERY and EMIP was high, which was favorable for ERY adsorption removal. Hopefully, the results of this study could provide new insights for trace antibiotic removal by molecular imprinting polymers in different aqueous environments.

Comprehensive analysis of research trends and prospects in electrochemical advanced oxidation processes (EAOPs) for wastewater treatment

Electrochemical advanced oxidation processes (EAOPs) have emerged as a promising approach for efficient wastewater treatment. However, despite their promising potential, there is a lack of comprehensive analysis regarding the research trends, bibliometric data, and research frontiers of EAOPs. To address this gap, this study conducted a thorough and comprehensive analysis of 2347 related articles in the Web of Science Core Collection Database from 2012 to 2022. The analysis included information on countries, authors, institutions, and more, with a focus on summarizing trends and cutting-edge research hotspots in the field. The University of Barcelona in Spain is the most effective institution. Brillas E. is the most productive author in the world. Research hotspots in EAOPs have evolved from traditional anodic oxidation (AO) to novel electro-Fenton (EF) technology, which focuses on efficient generation of H2O2 and the use of metal-organic frameworks to enhance performance and efficiency. Through systematic research hotspot analysis, the importance of performance comparison of different types of EAOPs, development of new materials, optimization of device parameters, and toxicity assessment of byproducts is highlighted. Concurrently, the rise and mechanisms of emerging EAOPs are predicted and analyzed. Finally, future research on EAOPs technologies should focus on technological coupling, development of new materials, reduction of energy consumption and cost, evaluation and minimization of toxicity, and exploration of green renewable energy sources for larger-scale applications in wastewater treatment pilot plants. In this way, these technologies can contribute to the sustainability of larger industrial wastewater treatment applications and make an important contribution to environmental protection and scientific and technological progress.

Energy generation from bioelectrochemical techniques: Concepts, reactor configurations and modeling approaches

The process industries play a significant role in boosting the economy of any nation. However, poor management in several industries has been posing worrisome threats to an environment that was previously immaculate. As a result, the untreated waste and wastewater discarded by many industries contain abundant organic matter and other toxic chemicals. It is more likely that they disrupt the proper functioning of the water bodies by perturbing the sustenance of many species of flora and fauna occupying the different trophic levels. The simultaneous threats to human health and the environment, as well as the global energy problem, have encouraged a number of nations to work on the development of renewable energy sources. Hence, bioelectrochemical systems (BESs) have attracted the attention of several stakeholders throughout the world on many counts. The bioelectricity generated from BESs has been recognized as a clean fuel. Besides, this technology has advantages such as the direct conversion of substrate to electricity, and efficient operation at ambient and even low temperatures. An overview of the BESs, its important operating parameters, bioremediation of industrial waste and wastewaters, biodegradation kinetics, and artificial neural network (ANN) modeling to describe substrate removal/elimination and energy production of the BESs are discussed. When considering the potential for use in the industrial sector, certain technical issues of BES design and the principal microorganisms/biocatalysts involved in the degradation of waste are also highlighted in this review.

Nanomaterials for Removal of Phenolic Derivatives from Water Systems: Progress and Future Outlooks

Environmental pollution remains one of the most challenging problems facing society worldwide. Much of the problem has been caused by human activities and increased usage of various useful chemical agents that inadvertently find their way into the environment. Triclosan (TCS) and related phenolic compounds and derivatives belong to one class of such chemical agents. In this work, we provide a mini review of these emerging pollutants and an outlook on the state-of-the-art in nanostructured adsorbents and photocatalysts, especially nanostructured materials, that are being developed to address the problems associated with these environmental pollutants worldwide. Of note, the unique properties, structures, and compositions of mesoporous nanomaterials for the removal and decontamination of phenolic compounds and derivatives are discussed. These materials have a great ability to scavenge, adsorb, and even photocatalyze the decomposition of these compounds to mitigate/prevent their possible harmful effects on the environment. By designing and synthesizing them using silica and titania, which are easier to produce, effective adsorbents and photocatalysts that can mitigate the problems caused by TCS and its related phenolic derivatives in the environment could be fabricated. These topics, along with the authors' remarks, are also discussed in this review.

Optimization of process parameters for trimethoprim and sulfamethoxazole removal by magnetite-chitosan nanoparticles using Box-Behnken design

The contamination of the aquatic environment with antibiotics is among the major and developing problems worldwide. The present study investigates the potential of adsorbent magnetite-chitosan nanoparticles (Fe3O4/CS NPs) for removing trimethoprim (TMP) and sulfamethoxazole (SMX). For this purpose, Fe3O4/CS NPs were synthesized by the co-precipitation method, and the adsorbent characteristics were investigated using XRD, SEM, TEM, pHzpc, FTIR, and VSM. The effect of independent variables (pH, sonication time, adsorbent amount, and analyte concentration) on removal performance was modeled and evaluated by Box-Behnken design (BBD). The SEM image of the Fe3O4/CS adsorbent showed that the adsorbent had a rough and irregular surface. The size of Fe3O4/CS crystals was about 70 nm. XRD analysis confirmed the purity and absence of impurities in the adsorbent. TEM image analysis showed that the adsorbent had a porous structure, and the particle size was in the range of nanometers. In VSM, the saturation magnetization of Fe3O4/CS adsorbent was 25 emu g-1 and the magnet could easily separate the adsorbent from the solution. The results revealed that the optimum condition was achieved at a concentration of 22 mg L-1, a sonication time of 15 min, an adsorbent amount of 0.13 g/100 mL, and a pH of 6. Among different solvents (i.e., ethanol, acetone, nitric acid, and acetonitrile), significant desorption of TMP and SMX was achieved using ethanol. Also, results confirmed that Fe3O4/CS NPs can be used for up to six adsorption/desorption cycles. In addition, applying the Fe3O4/CS NPs on real water samples revealed that Fe3O4/CS NPs could remove TMP and SMX in the 91.23-95.95% range with RSD (n = 3) < 4. Overall, the Fe3O4/CS NPs exhibit great potential for removing TMP and SMX antibiotics from real water samples.

One-step electrodeposition preparation of boron nitride and samarium co-modified Ti/PbO2 anode with ultra-long lifetime: highly efficient degradation of lincomycin wastewater

Lincomycin (LC) is an extensively applied broad-spectrum antibiotic, and its considerable residues in wastewater have caused a series of environmental problems, which makes degradation of LC wastewater extremely urgent. In this work, we have constructed a novel boron nitride (BN) and samarium (Sm) co-modified Ti/PbO2 as anode for high-performance degradation of LC wastewater. Compared with Ti/PbO2, Ti/PbO2-Sm, and Ti/PbO2-BN electrodes, Ti/PbO2-BN-Sm electrode with smaller pyramidal particles possesses higher oxygen evolution potential (2.32 V), excellent accelerated service life (103 h), and outstanding electrocatalytic activity. The single-factor experiments demonstrate that under optimized conditions (current density of 20 mA.cm-2, 6.0 g L-1 Na2SO4, pH 9, and temperature of 30°C), removal rate and COD degradation rate of LC at 3 h have reached 92.85% and 89.11%, respectively. At the same time, degradation of LC is in accordance with the primary kinetic model. Based on the analysis of high-performance liquid chromatography-mass spectrometry (HPLC-MS), four possible degradation pathways are hypothesized. Therefore, efficient electrochemical degradation of LC by using an extremely long-life Ti/PbO2 electrode with high catalytic activity may be a promising method.

Tracking drugged waters from various sources to drinking water-its persistence, environmental risk assessment, and removal techniques

Pharmaceuticals have become a major concern due to their nature of persistence and accumulation in the environment. Very few studies have been performed relating to its toxicity and ill effects on the aquatic/terrestrial flora and fauna. The typical wastewater and water treatment processes are not efficient enough to get these persistent pollutants treated, and there are hardly any guidelines followed. Most of them do not get fully metabolized and end up in rivers through human excreta and household discharge. Various methods have been adopted with the advancement in technology, sustainable methods are more in demand as they are usually cost-effective, and hardly any toxic by-products are produced. This paper aims to illustrate the concerns related to pharmaceutical contaminants in water, commonly found drugs in the various rivers and their existing guidelines, ill effects of highly detected pharmaceuticals on aquatic flora and fauna, and its removal and remediation techniques putting more emphasis on sustainable processes.

Recent perspective of antibiotics remediation: A review of the principles, mechanisms, and chemistry controlling remediation from aqueous media

Antibiotic pollution is an ever-growing concern that affects the growth of plants and the well-being of animals and humans. Research on antibiotics remediation from aqueous media has grown over the years and previous reviews have highlighted recent advances in antibiotics remediation technologies, perspectives on antibiotics ecotoxicity, and the development of antibiotic-resistant genes. Nevertheless, the relationship between antibiotics solution chemistry, remediation technology, and the interactions between antibiotics and adsorbents at the molecular level is still elusive. Thus, this review summarizes recent literature on antibiotics remediation from aqueous media and the adsorption perspective. The review discusses the principles, mechanisms, and solution chemistry of antibiotics and how they affect remediation and the type of adsorbents used for antibiotic adsorption processes. The literature analysis revealed that: (i) Although antibiotics extraction and detection techniques have evolved from single-substrate-oriented to multi-substrates-oriented detection technologies, antibiotics pollution remains a great danger to the environment due to its trace level; (ii) Some of the most effective antibiotic remediation technologies are still at the laboratory scale. Thus, upscaling these technologies to field level will require funding, which brings in more constraints and doubts patterning to whether the technology will achieve the same performance as in the laboratory; and (iii) Adsorption technologies remain the most affordable for antibiotic remediation. However, the recent trends show more focus on developing high-end adsorbents which are expensive and sometimes less efficient compared to existing adsorbents. Thus, more research needs to focus on developing cheaper and less complex adsorbents from readily available raw materials. This review will be beneficial to stakeholders, researchers, and public health professionals for the efficient management of antibiotics for a refined decision.

A systematic review on photo-Fenton process as an efficient advanced oxidation for degradation of amoxicillin in aqueous environments

Amoxicillin (AMX) is one of the antibiotics in the penicillin category that is used in various fields. Considering the harmful effects of its remains, it is necessary to survey the ways to remove this compound. Advanced oxidation process (AOPs), specially photo-Fenton has been used for the removal of AMX. This study has been conducted based on PubMed, Google Scholar, DOAJ, Web of Science, and Scopus databases during the years 2008-2019. Some factors such as the aquatic solution, light source characteristics, iron, and H₂O₂ concentration, AMX degradation percentage, removal of total organic carbon percentage, and AMX concentration have been surveyed to optimize the process. Studies showed that the photo-Fenton process is highly dependent on pH, and in most studies, the highest efficiency has been observed in acidic pH values. Using a more energy light source can be effective in reducing the use of catalysts and oxidizers. The combined methods of AOPs such as photo-Fenton, electro-Fenton, and photo-electro-Fenton have higher efficiency in increasing mineralization than the photon process. The use of synthetic wastewater has a higher efficiency in the degradation of AMX than in real wastewater in the photo-Fenton process, which can be due to the absence of the interfering agents in synthetic environments.

Cost-effective one-spot hydrothermal synthesis of graphene oxide nanoparticles for wastewater remediation: AI-enhanced approach for transition metal oxides

This investigation presents a cost-efficient hydrothermal synthesis technique for producing graphene oxide nanoparticles (GO-NPs) that exhibit promising potential in wastewater treatment. The synthesis process involves a facile and expandable hydrothermal reactor that can be regulated using an AI-empowered methodology. The generated GO-NPs were characterised using X-ray diffraction (XRD), Fourier-transform infrared (FTIR) spectroscopy, Raman spectroscopy, and transmission electron microscopy (TEM), confirming their successful synthesis and high quality. The high degree of crystallinity observed in the GO-NPs can be attributed to the favourable reaction conditions facilitated by the hydrothermal synthesis. The TEM analysis showed that the GO-NPs had a homogeneous dispersion pattern and a consistent size distribution of approximately 10 nm. Carboxylation was employed to functionalize the GO-NPs, enhancing their reactivity towards diverse contaminants present in wastewater. The remediation potential of the GO-NPs for transition metal oxides, which are frequently found in wastewater, was assessed. The GO-NPs exhibited notable efficacy in remediating the transition metal oxides that were subjected to testing. The heightened efficacy of remediation can be attributed to the substantial surface area and elevated reactivity of the GO-NPs, in addition to their functionalization using carboxylic groups. The cost-effective and efficient synthesis method, coupled with the high remediation potential of the GO-NPs, makes them a highly promising contender for employment in wastewater remediation applications. The use of AI in regulating the hydrothermal synthesis procedure enables accurate manipulation of the reaction parameters, thereby augmenting the quality and uniformity of the resultant GO-NPs. The proposed method exhibits scalability potential for large-scale production of GO-NPs, presenting a viable remedy for the challenges associated with wastewater remediation.
