Solute flow and particle transport in aquatic ecosystems: A review on the effect of emergent and rigid vegetation

In-channel vegetation is ubiquitous in aquatic environments and plays a critical role in the fate and transport of solutes and particles in aquatic ecosystems. Recent studies have advanced our understanding of the role of vegetation in solute flow and particle transport in aquatic ecosystems. This review summarizes these papers and discusses the impacts of emergent and rigid vegetation on the surface flow, the advection and dispersion of solutes, suspended load transport, bedload transport, and hyporheic exchange. The two competing effects of emergent vegetation on the above transport processes are discussed. On the one hand, emergent vegetation reduces mean flow velocity at the same surface slope, which reduces mass transport. On the other hand, at the same mean flow velocity, vegetation generates turbulence, which enhances mass transport. Mechanistic understanding of these two competing effects and predictive equations derived from laboratory experiments are discussed. Predictive equations for the mean flow velocity and turbulent kinetic energy inside an emergent vegetation canopy are derived based on force and energy balance. The impacts of emergent vegetation on the advection-dispersion process, the suspended load and bedload transport, and the hyporheic exchange are summarized. The impacts of other vegetation-related factors, such as vegetation morphology, submergence, and flexibility, are briefly discussed. The role of vegetation in transporting other particles, such as micro- and macro-plastics, is also briefly discussed. Finally, suggestions for future research directions are proposed to advance the understanding of the dynamic interplays among natural vegetation, flow dynamics, and sedimentary processes.

High-proportions of tailwater discharge alter microbial community composition and assembly in receiving sediments

The tailwater from wastewater treatment plants serves as an important water resource in arid regions, alleviating the conflict between supply and demand. However, the effects of different tailwater discharge proportions on microbial community dynamics remain unclear. In this study, we investigated the effects of different tailwater discharge proportions on the water quality and microbial community characteristics of sediments in receiving water bodies under controlled conditions (WF-1, WF-2, WF-3, WF-4, and WF-5, containing 0% tailwater + 100% natural water, 25% tailwater + 75% natural water, 50% tailwater + 50% natural water, 75% tailwater + 25% natural water, and 100% tailwater + 0% natural water, respectively). Microbial co-occurrence networks and structural equation model were used to unveil the relationship between microbial communities and their shaping factors. Results showed that distinct microbial community compositions were found in the sediments with low- (< 50%) and high- (> 50%) proportions of tailwater. Specifically, WCHB1-41 and g_4-29-1, which are involved in organic degradation-related functions, were the key genera in the high-proportion cluster. A total of 21 taxa were more abundant in the low-proportion (< 50%) cluster than that in high-proportion (> 50%). Moreover, higher modularity was observed in the low-proportion. Total phosphorus directly affected while ammonia nitrogen indirectly affected the microbial community structure. Our findings support the distinct heterogeneity of microbial communities driven by tailwater discharge in receiving water bodies, and further confirmed that high-proportion tailwater depletes sensitive microbial communities, which may be avoided through scientific management.

Effects of Cu(II)-DOM complexation on DOM degradation: Insights from spectroscopic evidence

The fate of dissolved organic matter (DOM) is primarily governed by its sources, degradation, and transformation processes within the environment. However, the influence of metal-DOM complexation on DOM degradation remains ambiguous. In this study, controlled laboratory experiments were conducted using Cu(II) and natural water from the Duliujian River and the Beidagang Wetland to examine the effects of metal-DOM binding on the degradation pathway of DOM. Our results showed that Cu(II)-DOM complexation affected the distribution of DOM molecular weight with elevated Mw after complexed with Cu(II). Nevertheless, the concentration of DOM decreased over the incubation period due to degradation. In the absence of Cu(II) binding, both wetland and river DOM followed similar degradation pathways, transforming from high to low molecular weight with changes predominantly in the 1-10 kDa size-fraction during DOM degradation. In contrast, in the presence of Cu(II) and thus Cu(II)-DOM binding, the degradation of DOM was enhanced, resulting in higher kinetic rate constants for both wetland and river DOM. The results of differential spectra further confirmed the degradation of DOM with a decrease in bulk spectroscopic properties and an increase in the degree of DOM-Cu(II) complexation. These findings imply a mutually reinforcing relationship between metal-DOM complexation and the degradation of DOM in aquatic environments, providing new insights into the biogeochemical behavior and environmental fate of DOM.

Dissolved organic matter (DOM) is independently stratified in thermally stratified water bodies

Thermal stratification often occurs in deep-water bodies, including oceans, lakes, and reservoirs. Dissolved organic matter (DOM) plays a critical role in regulating the dynamics of aquatic food webs and water quality in aquatic ecosystems. In the past, thermal stratification boundaries have been sometimes used exclusively to analyze the vertical distribution of DOM in thermally stratified water bodies. However, the validity of this practice has been challenged. Currently, there is limited understanding of the formation mechanism and stratification of the vertical distribution of DOM in thermally stratified water bodies, which hinders the analysis of the interactions between DOM and vertical aquatic ecological factors. To address this gap, we conducted a comprehensive study to extensively collect the vertical distribution of DOM in thermally stratified water bodies and identify the primary factors influencing this distribution. We found that DOM was independently stratified in thermally stratified water bodies (including two cases in unstratified water bodies), and that the formation mechanisms and statuses of DOM stratification were different from those of thermal stratification. The boundaries and numbers of DOM stratification were generally inconsistent with those of thermal stratification. Therefore, it is more accurate to divide DOM into different layers according to its own vertical profile, and analyze DOM characteristics of each layer based on its own stratification instead of thermal stratification. This study sheds light on the relationship between DOM and thermal stratification and provides a novel approach for analyzing DOM vertical distribution characteristics and their impact on aquatic ecosystems. This finding also holds significant implications for the design and implementation of environmental management programs aimed at preserving the health and functionality of aquatic ecosystems.

Seasonal sensitivity of groundwater dissolved organic matter in recognition of chronic kidney disease of unknown etiology: Optical and molecular perspectives

Chronic kidney disease of unknown etiology (CKDu) has aroused a great concern due to its widespread prevalence in many developing countries. Dissolved organic matter (DOM) has been proved to be associated with CKDu in groundwater. However, the responses of their association to abiotic influencing factors like seasonal variation are not carefully disclosed. Herein, we revealed the seasonal variation of DOM in CKDu related groundwater (CKDu groundwater) and control group (non-CKDu groundwater) collected from Sri Lanka during the dry and wet seasons by excitation-emission matrix spectroscopy and Fourier transform ion cyclotron resonance mass spectrometry. In both CKDu and non-CKDu groundwaters, the input of exogenous DOM during wet season improved the degree of humification and molecular weight of DOM, while oxidative processes during the dry season increased the ratios of oxygen to carbon (O/C). Furthermore, compared with non-CKDu groundwater, more DOM with high O/C enriched in CKDu groundwater during the dry season, indicating stronger oxidative processes in CKDu groundwater. It may result in the enrichment of carboxyl group and induce the enhanced leaching of CKDu-related Si and F-. The receiver operating characteristic (ROC) analysis showed that the CKDu-recognition ability of most optical and molecular indicators was susceptible to seasonal factors and their recognition abilities were stronger in the wet season. The linkage between DOM and CKDu was affected by seasonal factors through the occurrence, mobility, degradation, and toxicity of typical organic molecules (e.g., C17H18O10S). The study provides a new insight into screening pathogenic factors of other endemic diseases related to organic molecules.

Source, composition and molecular diversity of dissolved and particulate organic matter varied with riparian land use in tropical coastal headstreams

Source, composition and molecular diversity determine the reactivity and stabilization of organic matter (OM, dissolved [DOM]/particulate [POM]), affecting its behavior and fate. Here, multiple spectral and mass spectrometry techniques were applied to examine how riparian land-use shaped the source, composition and molecular diversity of POM and DOM (HDOM) in adjacent headstreams. Compared to HDOM with abundant lignins, microbially-transformed heteroatoms and carboxyl-rich alicyclic acids (CRAMs), POM exhibited higher allochthonous characteristics and more bioactive components, but lower molecular weight and diversity in different land-use-dominated streams. Compared to wetland-dominated headstreams, both POM and HDOM exhibited more terrestrial origin and condensed aromatics/tannins molecules for agriculture-impacted headstreams and bio-labile lipids, proteins and carbohydrates for forest-impacted headstreams. Structural equation mode (SEM) showed that soil-derived DOM (SDOM) showed the most prominent influence on the source, composition and molecular diversity of POM and the source of HDOM. The molecular composition and diversity of HDOM were mainly influenced by soil properties/SDOM and aquatic microorganisms, respectively. Redundancy analysis (RDA) revealed that autochthonous, bio-labile compositions of POM in forest and wetland streams were positively related to aquatic Bacteroidetes/Cyanobacteria, and carbohydrates/biogenic index of SDOM, while that of HDOM were positively linked with aquatic Bacteroidetes/Cyanobacteria, and SDOM molecular diversity. Terrestrial and aromatic POM in agricultural headstreams were associated with aquatic total nitrogen/Actinobacteria, and humification degree, aromatic/phenolic substances of SDOM, while that of HDOM were mainly regulated by aquatic nitrate/total nitrogen/Actinobacteria, and aromatic/carboxylic-containing moieties of SDOM. Noteworthily, the molecular diversity of agricultural OM increased along the soil-stream continuum due to the input of soil condensed aromatics and tannins. The opposite trend was observed in forest and wetland streams due to the input of bioactive carbohydrates and the microbial-degradation in-stream. These results are helpful to predict the behavior and fate of OM and determine effective management strategies in tropical coastal regions undergoing intense anthropogenic alterations.

Seasonal dynamics of dissolved organic matter bioavailability coupling with water mass circulation in the South Yellow Sea

As a typical shelf-marginal sea, the South Yellow Sea (SYS) is significantly influenced by various factors such as land-based inputs and water mass movements, leading the complex biogeochemical processes of dissolved organic matter (DOM) to become highly dynamic. However, the bioavailability of dissolved organic matter (DOM) coupled with water mass circulation has not been accurately assessed, despite being crucial for understanding the source-sink pattern of organic carbon in marginal sea. In this study, four cruises were conducted in the SYS to analyze the spatial and temporal distribution characteristics of dissolved organic carbon (DOC), dissolved organic nitrogen (DON), and total dissolved amino acids (TDAA). Combined with the bioassay experiments, TDAA carbon normalized yield [TDAA (%DOC)] and TDAA degradation index (DIAA) were used as indicators to explore the bioavailability of DOM across different water masses. Results show that the DOC of the SYS exhibits higher average value in late autumn and early winter, and lower value in spring and summer due to the seasonal alternation of water mass and biological activities. The collective results indicate that DOM bioavailability is higher in the Changjiang River diluted water (CDW) and lower in the Yellow Sea warm current (YSWC) and the Yellow Sea cold water mass (YSCWM). Approximately 20 % of DON can be degraded in the YSCWM during autumn. Notably, although the YSCWM constitutes merely constitutes 10 % of the SYS volume, it stores 18.1 % dissolved inorganic nitrogen (DIN) and 23.9 % PO43- of total nutrients, indicating that the YSCWM is a significant nutrient reservoir within the SYS.

Vertical connectivity of microbiome and metabolome reveals depth-dependent variations across a deep cold-seep water column

Deciphering the vertical connectivity of oceanic microbiome and metabolome is crucial for understanding the carbon sequestration and achieving the carbon neutrality. However, we lack a systematic view of the interplay among particle transport, microbial community, and metabolic trait across depths. Through integrating the biogeochemical, microbial, and metabolic characteristics of a deep cold-seep water column (∼1989 m), we find the altered connectivity of microbial community and dissolved organic matter (DOM) across depths. Both the microbial communities (bacteria and protists) and DOM show a clear compositional connectivity from surface to the depth of 1000 m, highlighting the controls of sinking particle over microbial connectivity from the epipelagic to mesopelagic zone. However, due to the biological migration and ocean mixing, the fecal-associated bacteria and protistan consumers unexpectedly emerge and the degradation index of DOM substantially alters around 1000-1200 m. Collectively, we unveil the significance of multi-faceted particle dispersion, which supports the connectivity and variability of deep ocean microbial communities.

Molecular and optical signatures of photochemical transformation of dissolved organic matter: Nonnegligible role of suspended particulate matter in urban river

Natural dissolved organic matter (DOM) is one of the Earth's dynamic carbon pools and a key intermediate in the global carbon cycle. Photochemical processes potentially affect DOM composition and activity in surface water. Suspended particulate matter (SPM) is the integral component of slow-moving rivers, and holds the potential for photochemical reactivity. To further investigate the influence of SPM on DOM photochemical transformation, this study conducted experiments comparing samples with and without SPM irradiated under simulated sunlight. Surface water samples from slow-moving urban rivers were collected. DOM optical characteristics and molecular features obtained by Fourier transform ion cyclotron resonance mass spectrometry (FT-ICR MS) were investigated. Photolabile DOM was enriched in unsaturated and highly aromatic terrestrial substances. Photoproduced DOM had low aromaticity and was dominated by saturated aliphatics, protein-like substances, and carbohydrates. Study results indicated that the presence of SPM had a nonnegligible impact on the molecular traits of DOM, such as composition, molecular diversity, photolability, and bioavailability during photochemical reactions. In the environment affected by SPM, molecules containing heteroatoms exhibit higher photosensitivity. SPM promotes the photochemical transformation of a wider range of chemical types of photolabile DOM, particularly nitrogen-containing compounds. This study provides an essential insight into the more precise simulation of photochemical reactions of DOM influenced by SPM occurring in natural rivers, contributing to our understanding of the global carbon cycle from new theoretical perspectives.

Iron-Nitrogen Amendment Reduced Perfluoroalkyl Acids' Phyto-Uptake in the Wheat-Soil Ecosystem: Contributions of Dissolved Organic Matters in Soil Solution and Root Extracellular Polymeric Substances

Understanding the mechanisms underlying perfluoroalkyl acids (PFAAs) translocation, distribution, and accumulation in wheat-soil ecosystems is essential for agricultural soil pollution control and crop ecological risk assessment. This study systematically investigated the translocation of 13 PFAAs under different iron and nitrogen fertilization conditions in a wheat-soil ecosystem. Short-chain PFAAs including PFBA, PFPeA, PFHxA, and PFBS mostly accumulated in soil solution (10.43-55.33%) and soluble extracellular polymeric substances (S-EPS) (11.39-14.77%) by the adsorption to amino- (-NH2) and hydroxyl (-OH) groups in dissolved organic matter (DOM). Other PFAAs with longer carbon chain lengths were mostly distributed on the soil particle surface by hydrophobic actions (74.63-94.24%). Iron-nitrogen amendments triggered (p < 0.05) soil iron-nitrogen cycling, rhizospheric reactive oxygen species fluctuations, and the concentration increases of -NH2 and -OH in the DOM structure. Thus, the accumulation capacity of PFAAs in soil solution and root EPS was increased. In sum, PFAAs' translocation from soil particles to wheat root was synergistically reduced by iron and nitrogen fertilization through increased adsorption of soil particles (p < 0.05) and the retention of soil solution and root EPSs. This study highlights the potential of iron-nitrogen amendments in decreasing the crop ecological risks to PFAAs' pollution.

Do DOM quality and origin affect the uptake and accumulation of lipid-soluble contaminants in coastal filter feeders? An experimental simulation of teflubenzuron exposure to blue mussels

The increased export of terrestrial dissolved organic matter (terrDOM) to coastal marine ecosystems may affect local filter feeders and the local food web via the altered uptake of organic material and associated contaminants. To compare terrDOM to marine DOM (marDOM) as contaminant vectors to coastal biota, we exposed blue mussels (Mytilus sp.) to the different DOM types in combination with teflubenzuron, a widely applied lipophilic aquaculture medicine targeting salmon lice (Lepeophtheirus salmonis). A 16-day exposure of the blue mussels to DOM and teflubenzuron was followed by a depuration phase of 20 days without teflubenzuron. We calculated teflubenzuron adsorption rates and bioaccumulation factors (BAF) using a Bayesian model, expecting teflubenzuron uptake to be greater with terrDOM than marDOM due to the higher prevalence of large amphipathic humic acids in terrDOM. Humic acids have strong absorption properties and are able to envelope lipophilic molecules. Thus, humic acids can function as an efficient contaminant vector when taken up by filter feeders. Although there were varying degrees of overlap, the mussels tended to accumulate higher amounts of teflubenzuron in the DOM treatments than in the seawater control (bioaccumulation factor [BAF] in seawater: median 106 L/kg; 2.5 %-97.5 % percentile: 69-160 L/kg). Contrary to expectations, mussels exposed to marDOM showed a trend toward more bioaccumulation of teflubenzuron than those exposed to terrDOM (BAF marine 144 L/kg; 102-221 L/kg versus BAF terrestrial: 121 L/kg; 82-186 L/kg). The highest teflubenzuron accumulation was observed with the 50:50 mixture of marDOM and terrDOM (BAF mix: 165 L/kg; 117-244 L/kg). The slight difference in DOM-type accumulation rates observed in this experiment-especially the accumulation rate of terrDOM compared to that of the seawater-only treatment type-was not considered environmentally relevant. Further studies are necessary to see if the observed trends transfer to complex environmental systems.

Biodegradability of algal-derived dissolved organic matter and its influence on methylmercury uptake by phytoplankton

Methylmercury (MeHg) uptake by phytoplankton represents a key step in determining the exposure risks of aquatic organisms and human beings to this potent neurotoxin. Phytoplankton uptake is believed to be negatively related to dissolved organic matter (DOM) concentration in water. However, microorganisms can rapidly change DOM concentration and composition and subsequent impact on MeHg uptake by phytoplankton has rarely been tested. Here, we explored the influences of microbial degradation on the concentrations and molecular compositions of DOM derived from three common algal sources and tested their subsequent impacts on MeHg uptake by the widespread phytoplankton species Microcystis elabens. Our results indicated that dissolved organic carbon was degraded by 64.3‒74.1% within 28 days of incubating water with microbial consortia from a natural meso‑eutrophic river. Protein-like components in DOM were more readily degraded, while the numbers of molecular formula for peptides-like compounds had increased after 28 days' incubation, probably due to the production and release of bacterial metabolites. Microbial degradation made DOM more humic-like which was consistent with the positive correlations between changes in proportions of Peaks A and C and bacterial abundance in bacterial community structures as illustrated by 16S rRNA gene sequencing. Despite rapid losses of the bulk DOM during the incubation, we found that DOM degraded after 28 days still reduced the MeHg uptake by Microcystis elabens by 32.7‒52.7% relative to a control without microbial decomposers. Our findings emphasize that microbial degradation of DOM would not necessarily enhance the MeHg uptakes by phytoplankton and may become more powerful in inhibiting MeHg uptakes by phytoplankton. The potential roles of microbes in degrading DOM and changing the uptakes of MeHg at the base of food webs should now be incorporated into future risk assessments of aquatic Hg cycling.

Biochar-coupled organic fertilizer reduced soil water-dispersible colloidal phosphorus contents in agricultural fields

Soil water-dispersible colloidal phosphorus (WCP) presents high mobility, however, the regulatory effect of biochar-coupled organic fertilizer is rarely known, especially under different cropping patterns. This study investigated the P adsorption, soil aggregate stability, and WCP in three paddy and three vegetable fields. These soils were amended with different fertilizers (chemical fertilizer, CF; substitution of solid-sheep manure or liquid-biogas slurry organic fertilizer, SOF/LOF; substitution of biochar-coupled organic fertilizers, BSOF/BLOF). Results presented that the LOF averagely increased the WCP contents by 50.2% across the sites, but the SOF and BSOF/BLOF averagely decreased their contents by 38.5% and 50.7% in comparison with the CF. The WCP decline in the BSOF/BLOF-amended soils was mainly attributed to the intensive P adsorption capacity and soil aggregate stability. The BSOF/BLOF increased the amorphous Fe and Al contents in the fields in comparison with the CF, which improved the adsorption capacity of soil particles, further improving the maximum absorbed P (Q_max) and reducing the dissolved organic matter (DOC), leading to the improvement of > 2 mm water-stable aggregate (WSA_>2mm) and subsequent WCP decrease. This was proved by the remarkable negative associations between the WCP and Q_max (R² = 0.78, p < 0.01) and WSA_>2mm (R² = 0.74, p < 0.01). This study manifests that biochar-coupled organic fertilizer could effectively reduce soil WCP content via the improvement of P adsorption and aggregate stability.

Role of molecular weight-dependent spectral properties in regulating Cu(II) binding by dissolved organic matter from different sources

The complexation of metals with dissolved organic matter (DOM) under different compositions and molecular weights (MWs) will result in different environmental fate and toxicity, but the specific role and impact of DOM MWs remain less well understood. This study explored the metal binding characteristics by DOM with different MWs from different sources, including sea, river, and wetland waters. The results of fluorescence characterization showed that the >1 kDa high-molecular-weight (HMW)-DOM were mainly from terrestrial sources while the low-molecular-weight (LMW)-DOM fractions were mostly from microbial sources. Based on UV-Vis spectroscopic characterization, the LMW-DOM contained more unsaturated bonds than its HMW counterpart, and the substituents are generally dominated by polar functional groups. Summer DOM had more unsaturated bonds and a higher metal binding capacity than winter DOM. Furthermore, DOM with different MWs had significantly different Cu binding properties. In addition, Cu binding with microbially derived LMW-DOM mainly caused the change in the peak at 280 nm, while binding with terrigenous HMW-DOM resulted in the change of the 210 nm peak. Compared with the HMW-DOM, most of the LMW-DOM had stronger Cu-binding ability. Correlation analysis indicates that metal binding ability of DOM mainly depends on its concentration, number of unsaturated bonds and benzene rings, and types of substituents during interactions. This work provides an improved understanding of the metal-DOM binding mechanism, the role of composition- and MW-dependent DOM from different sources, and thus the transformation and environmental/ecological role of metals in aquatic systems.

A classification-based approach to mapping particulate organic matter (POM) in inland water using OLCI images

Particulate organic matter (POM) plays a major role in freshwater ecosystems by serving as a bridge for the conversion of various nutrients. The composition and sources of POM in inland lakes are complex, making it difficult to estimate its concentration accurately via remote sensing. Therefore, a classification-based method based on the sources and composition of POM is proposed for estimating POM concentrations in inland lakes. In this study, 379 samples were collected from ten lakes in the Yangtze River Delta (YRD) at different times. A water-type classification method based on OLCI [Formula: see text], [Formula: see text], [Formula: see text], and [Formula: see text] was developed for POM estimation based on biological and optical characteristics. Water type 1 is relatively clear, and POM may originate from aquatic vegetation or sediment. Water type 2 was dominated by inorganic suspended matter, and POM mainly originated from the attachment and entrainment of inorganic minerals. Water type 3 is an algae-dominated water body, and POM is mainly derived from fresh algal particles and the microbial degradation of phytoplankton. Therefore, specific POM estimation algorithms were developed for each water type. OLCI [Formula: see text], [Formula: see text], [Formula: see text], and [Formula: see text] were used for water type 1; [Formula: see text], [Formula: see text], and [Formula: see text] were adopted for water type 2; and [Formula: see text], [Formula: see text], and [Formula: see text] were selected for water type 3. Using an independent dataset to evaluate the estimation accuracy of the developed algorithm, the results show that the estimation performance of this algorithm is significantly improved compared to the two other algorithms used; the mean absolute percentage errors (MAPE) decreased from 72.56% and 52.21% to 32.61%, and the root mean square errors (RMSE) decreased from 3.05 mg/L and 2.24 mg/L to 1.75 mg/L. A random error analysis of the atmospheric correction demonstrated that this algorithm is robust and can still perform well within a random error of 30%. Finally, this method was successfully applied to map the POM concentrations in the YRD using OLCI images acquired on November 12, 2020.

Deciphering the microheterogeneous repartition effect of environmental matrix on surface-enhanced Raman spectroscopy (SERS) analysis for pollutants in natural waters

Although surface-enhanced Raman spectroscopy (SERS) offers a promising technology for sensitive detection of environmental pollutants in natural waters, its performance can be greatly affected by the environmental matrix. The lack of identification of the origin and the underlying mechanism of matrix effect hinders the application of SERS in practical environmental analysis. Herein, with silver nanoparticles (AgNPs) as a solution-based SERS substrate, the matrix effect from environmental waters on SERS analysis and the underlying mechanisms were investigated. It was found that natural water matrix could deteriorate SERS performance and cause artefacts in SERS spectra. Among various aqueous components, natural organic matter (NOM), including humic substances and proteins, mainly contributed to the matrix effect on SERS detection, while polysaccharides or inorganic ions had minor influence. The matrix effect from NOM was found to be prevalent for different analytes and SERS substrates. The mechanism of the matrix effect from NOM in the ternary system of analyte, NOM, and nanoparticles was investigated through three mutual interactions. The microheterogeneous repartition of analytes by NOM, other than the formation of NOM-corona or competitive adsorption between NOM and analytes on nanoparticles, was found to play the dominating role in interfering with SERS detection. This work illuminates the origin and underlying mechanisms of the matrix effect, which will promote the practical application of SERS technology in environmental analysis.

Novel insights into source apportionment of dissolved organic matter in aquifer affected by anthropogenic groundwater recharge: Applicability of end-member mixing analysis based optical indices

The composition and main sources of dissolved organic matter (DOM) in groundwater may change significantly under long-term anthropogenic groundwater recharge (AGR); however, the impact of AGR on quantitative sources of groundwater DOM has seldom been reported. This study evaluated the applicability of optical indices combined with mixing stable isotope analysis in R (MixSIAR) in end-member mixing analysis (EMMA) of groundwater DOM. Fluorescent indices, including C1%, C2%, and C3%, were more sensitive to AGR than other absorbance indices, as indicated by the significant difference between the dominant area of artificial groundwater recharged by surface water and the dominant area of natural groundwater recharged by atmospheric precipitation (NGRP). BIX-C1% was selected as the optimal dual index after the screening protocol of groundwater DOM for EMMA. Our results showed that DOM in the aquifer was mainly subject to autochthonous DOM and the contribution of background groundwater to AGRSW and NGRP groundwater accounted for 36.15% ± 32.41% and 55.46% ± 37.17% (p < 0.05), respectively. Therefore, AGR significantly changed the native DOM in the groundwater. In allochthonous sources of DOM, sewage and surface water contributed 29.54% ± 24.87% and 21.32% ± 28.08%, and 24.79% ± 15.56% and 15.21% ± 14.20% to AGRSW and NGRP groundwater, respectively. The contribution of surface water to AGRSW groundwater was significantly higher than that to NGRP groundwater (p < 0.05), indicating that AGR introduced significantly more DOM from surface water to groundwater. This study provides novel insights into the quantitative source apportionment of DOM in groundwater under long-term AGR, which will facilitate the environmental risk assessment of present AGR measures and the sustainable management of clean water.

Mobilization of colloids during sediment resuspension and its effect on the release of heavy metals and dissolved organic matter

Natural colloids are important in mobilizing pollutants in aquatic environments. This study investigated the mobilization and aggregation of natural colloids during the sediment resuspension and re-sedimentation processes using nanoparticle tracking analysis. The metals and organic matter in overlying water were divided and examined in dissolved (<0.45 μm), colloidal (3 kDa - 0.45 μm), and truly dissolved (<3 kDa) forms. Excitation emission matrix-parallel factor analysis (EEM-PARAFAC) was used to characterize the dissolved organic matter (DOM). In overlying water, most natural colloids were < 200 nm before resuspension. An evident mobilization of colloids and an increase in colloid size were observed during resuspension. The formation of particles (>0.45 μm) and decreases of small colloids (<200 nm) indicated that resuspension promoted the aggregation of colloids. Mobilization of colloids was accompanied by increases in concentrations of Fe, Al, and organic carbon in colloidal fractions, which could be related to the formation of mineral-organic complexes under an oxic environment. The release of DOM from sediments mainly contributed to the truly dissolved humic-like fraction, and colloidal organic carbon accounted for, on average, 20 % of the total dissolved organic carbon (DOC). Fe and Al had the highest colloidal proportions as they are major compositions of inorganic colloids. Substantial removal of dissolved Al, Fe, Pb, and Zn occurred when colloids aggregated in the overlying water. Although the adsorption of suspended particles may also decrease the concentrations of dissolved metals, the increased proportions of colloidal metals indicated a possible role of colloids in this process. These findings provide insight into the behavior of colloids during the resuspension process and indicate that the aggregation of colloids could promote the removal of dissolved matter.

Response of dissolved organic matter chemistry to flood control of a large river reservoir during an extreme storm event

With the frequent occurrence of extreme floods under global climate change-induced storm events, reservoir operation has been highlighted for river flood control, complicating the transport and transformation of riverine dissolved organic matter (DOM), one of the largest reactive carbon pools on earth. In particular, the response of riverine DOM chemistry to reservoir flood control during extreme storm events is still unclear. To fill this knowledge gap, the mechanism of DOM variation in Yangtze River with the world's largest Three Gorges Reservoir (TGR) operation during an extreme storm event was explored. Optical and molecular properties of DOM varied significantly from upstream to downstream in non-TGR area, while no significant variation in DOM chemistry was observed in TGR area. The results uncovered a short time transformation of DOM from non-TGR area to TGR area, demonstrating that although storm event induced chemodiversity bloom of riverine DOM, flood control of TGR "re-constrained" DOM to more similar chemistry mainly under the influence of turbidity involved DOM transformation (e.g., adsorption/desorption and flocculation). Furthermore, combined with the hydrological information, we found that although TGR temporarily blocked dissolved organic carbon (DOC) flow during the flood event, the abundance of biologically recalcitrant DOC increased in TGR, which would contribute to its further transportation to downstream watershed. This study emphasizes the impact of TGR on extreme storm event-induced DOM dynamics, which also hints a better understanding of the crucial role of anthropogenic activity in affecting carbon cycling under extreme climate change.

Differences in the composition, source, and stability of suspended particulate matter and sediment organic matter in Hulun Lake, China

The occurrence, migration, transformation, and stability of sediment (SOM) and suspended particulate (SPOM) organic matters have important effects on the environmental behaviors of carbon, nitrogen, phosphorus, and other pollutants in a water environment. The content, composition, fluorescence characteristics, source, and stability of SOM and SPOM in Hulun Lake, a typical lake in cold and arid region of China, were compared by sequential extraction, three-dimensional fluorescence spectroscopy, parallel factor technique, carbon-nitrogen ratio, and stable carbon isotope. Contents of SOM and SPOM in north and west were higher than those in east and south. The average content of SPOM (24.70 ± 4.63 g/kg) was slightly higher than that of SOM (23.04 ± 10.27 g/kg), but the difference was not significant. Humin was the dominant component in SOM and SPOM, accounting for 73.7% and 61.2%, respectively. Humus was the main fluorescence component of water-extractable organic matter in SOM and SPOM, accounting for 79.9% and 70.4%, respectively, of the total fluorescence intensity. SOM and SPOM were derived from terrestrial sources with a relative contribution rate of about 70%. SPOM was more influenced by autochthonous sources and had a significantly lower humification degree and stability than SOM. Effects of climate changes on migration, transformation, stability, and bioavailability of organic matters and endogenous pollutants closely related to organic matters in lakes of cold and arid regions should be paid attention in the future.

Characterization of benthic biofilms in mangrove sediments and their variation in response to nutrients and contaminants

Diatom-dominated biofilms and associated extracellular polymeric substances (EPS) may adapt to the stress of long-term exposure to nutrients and anthropogenic contaminants. However, such interactions in contaminated mangrove sediments have rarely been reported. Based on the in situ characterization of biofilm components and environmental factors, the present study aimed to explore the key factors involved in shaping sediment biofilms through correlational and multivariate analyses. The pennate diatom Navicula is the core taxon that plays a crucial role in balancing the abundance of Nitzschia and Cyclotella, and is the main producer of bound-polysaccharides. The taxa composition shifts in a high N/P matrix, with the populations of pennate diatoms increasing but that of centric diatoms decreasing. High nutrient concentrations yield more number of diatoms and elevated levels of EPS. Bacteria are the main consumers of EPS and tend to be more symbiotic with Nitzschia than the other two diatom taxa. Some bound-polysaccharides dominated by arabinose and glucose units are transformed into the colloidal fraction, whereas other conservative ones serve as structural materials in concert with the bound-proteins. The planktonic phase of Cyclotella breaks down the structural EPS secreted by pennate diatoms in a process that directly affects the dynamic renewal of benthic biofilms. Most heavy metals as well as bisphenol A inhibit the abundance of bacteria and diatoms but enhance most EPS fractions except bound-polysaccharides. The response of structural EPS to specific contaminants varies, exhibiting increases in Co and Ni levels but decreases in nonylphenol and methylparaben levels. The present study improves our understanding of the microbial carbon loop of benthic biofilms in mangrove ecosystems under stress by nutrients and mixed contaminants.

Photochemical and microbial transformation of particulate organic matter depending on its source and size

Particulate organic matter (POM) in water systems can be converted into dissolved organic matter (DOM) through various pathways depending on its properties and transformation. Thus, information on the behavior of POM is crucial for fully understanding water systems and the carbon cycle. In this study, the effects of particle size and the source of POM, as well as photochemical and microbial changes in DOM characteristics subsequently released from POM were evaluated using various spectral indices, excitation-emission matrix combined with parallel factor analysis components, and principal component analysis. The amount of dissolved organic carbon (DOC) released from POM during suspension was significantly associated with the carbon content of POM (p < 0.05). The amount of DOC (mg-C/g-SS) decreased in mineral-bound POM as a result of microbial degradation but increased in biogenic POM as a result of microbial dissolution, owing to the structural differences in organic matter from different sources. Mineral-bound POM showed more DOC production by photochemical desorption than microbial degradation, whereas biogenic POM displayed the opposite trend. The DOM derived from fine POM had more humified terrestrial humic-like substances than those derived from coarse POM. Principal components 1 and 2 were associated with DOC production and degree of humification, respectively. The increase in the degree of aromaticity and humification of organic matter was higher in mineral-bound POM by photochemical desorption of highly humified organic matter and in the biogenic POM by microbial dissolution. In conclusion, this study was able to provide basic information on the transformation of POM, thus, it is expected to broaden the knowledge of the biogeochemical cycle of organic matter.

Spatiotemporal pattern and biodegradation process of amino acids in the large shallow eutrophic lake Taihu, China

Organic matter (OM) and nutrient inputs generated by human activities promote the development of eutrophication. Amino acids (AAs) are an integral part of OM, and studying their patterns will provide new insights into organic matter dynamics in lakes. Four seasonal field campaigns in eutrophic Lake Taihu and a 14-day phytoplankton degradation experiment were carried out to determine the variability and bioavailability of amino acids. The quality and quantity of AAs varied among different seasons and lake types. The concentrations of particulate (PAA) and dissolved (DAA) AA were 14.67 ± 13.25 μM (carbon- and nitrogen-normalized PAA yields: PAA-C%, 23.8 ± 13.5%; PAA-N%, 22.8 ± 2.1%) and 2.95 ± 1.05 μM (carbon- and nitrogen-normalized DAA yields: DAA-C%, 3.7 ± 1.1%; DAA-N%, 12.6 ± 11.2%) in Lake Taihu, respectively. PAA and DAA showed high mean values in the algal-dominated northern area in summer. Glutamic acid (Glu), alanine (Ala), aspartic acid (Asp) and glycine (Gly) contributed to nearly 50% of PAA, while Gly, accounting for 17-24%, was the main component of DAA. During a 14-day phytoplankton degradation period, 98% of Chl a, 63% of POC and 92% of PAA were removed in the dark treatment, and a more obvious downward trend was recorded than in the light treatment. Principal component analysis of the indices of PAA indicated that Glu, arginine (Arg) and histidine (His) were dominant on day 0, while Gly and lysine (Lys) were dominant on day 14. There were notable serine + threonine (Ser + Thr [mol%]) and aspartic acid/glycine ratio (Asp/Gly [mol%]) end-member divisions among different organic matter sources. DAA had higher Ser + Thr [mol%] and lower Asp/Gly [mol%] values than PAA. The amino acid degradation index (DI) of PAA and DAA was 0.97 ± 0.28 and - 1.04 ± 0.43, respectively. The fresh DAA from the algae degradation incubation also had DI values similar to those of field DAA in the northern algae-dominated lake region. Amino acid parameters (AA-C%, DI values, Ser + Thr [mol%] and Asp/Gly [mol%]) were calculated to indicate the source, freshness and bioavailability of organic matter in eutrophic shallow Lake Taihu.

Insights into the role of the microbial community lifestyle strategies in variations of the dissolved organic matter molecular composition along an effluent-dominated river

Urbanization has dramatically changed the quality and quantity of dissolved organic matter (DOM) fluxes in rivers, thereby affecting the diversity and lifestyle strategies of microbial communities. However, relationships between DOM molecular composition and microbial lifestyle strategies in effluent-dominated rivers are poorly understood. Herein, we investigated the variations in DOM structure and composition of an effluent-dominated river and further revealed how these changes alter the abundance and lifestyle strategies of microbial communities. Results demonstrated that macromolecular (MW > 35 kDa) humic-like substances constituted the major components of effluent-dominated riverine DOM. Also, due to the degradation of humic-like substances, the accumulation of protein-like substances was observed from upstream to downstream areas, corresponding to an apparent decrease in overall aromaticity. The abundance of bacterial, Actinobacteria, and eukaryotic was higher in the upstream and midstream areas but relatively lower in the downstream area. The response of bacterial and Actinobacteria communities to the changes in DOM composition was more prominent as compared to that of eukaryotic. Based on multivariate statistical analysis, the decrease in aromatic components (MW > 35 kDa) was mainly attributed to the degradation of Proteobacteria and Actinobacteria (K-strategists), resulting in a decrease in their relative abundance along the river course. Proteins and polysaccharides (15 kDa < MW < 35 kDa, MW < 6 kDa) were more easily utilized by Firmicutes and Bacteroidetes (r-strategists), leading to an increase in their relative abundance. With the decrease of macromolecular humic-like substances and the increase of protein-like substances, river microbial communities shifted from K-strategists to r-strategists. This work unveils the evolution of DOM in an effluent-dominated river and the influence of the degradation of macromolecular humic-like substances on r/K-strategists.

The Transformation and Export of Organic Carbon Across an Arctic River-Delta-Ocean Continuum

The Arctic Ocean is surrounded by land that feeds highly seasonal rivers with water enriched in high concentrations of dissolved and particulate organic carbon (DOC and POC). Explicit estimates of the flux of organic carbon across the land-ocean interface are difficult to quantify and many interdependent processes makes source attribution difficult. A high-resolution 3-D biogeochemical model was built for the lower Yukon River and coastal ocean to estimate biogeochemical cycling across the land-ocean continuum. The model solves for complex reactions related to organic carbon transformation, including mechanistic photodegradation and multi-reactivity microbial processing, DOC-POC flocculation, and phytoplankton dynamics. The baseline DOC and POC flux out of the delta from April to September 2019, was 977 and 536 Gg C (∼80% of the annual total), but only 50% of the DOC and 25% of the POC exited the plume across the 10 m isobath. Microbial breakdown of DOC accounted for a net loss of 168 Gg C (17% of delta export) within the plume and photodegradation accounted for a net loss of 46.6 Gg C DOC (5% of delta export) in 2019. Flocculation decreased the total organic carbon flux by only 6.4 Gg C (∼1%), while POC sinking accounted for 63.3 Gg C (10%) settling in the plume. The loss of chromophoric dissolved organic matter due to photodegradation increased the light available for phytoplankton growth throughout the coastal ocean, demonstrating the secondary effects that organic carbon reactions can have on biological processes and the net coastal carbon flux.

Temperature Effects on Effluent Microgel Formation

Wastewater treatment plant effluent is considered an important hotspot of dissolved organic matter. The behavior and transformation of dissolved effluent organic matter (dEfOM) regulate particle sedimentation, pollutant fate, microbial attachment, and biofilm formation. However, studies have so far focused on the transformation of marine and riverine organic matter, and the current knowledge of dEfOM behavior is still limited. Fluctuations in water conditions, especially temperature, may directly alter the size, assembly speed, and structure of microgels, thereby potentially disturbing fate and the transportation of organic matter. In this study, we firstly investigated the effects of temperature on the behavior and capacity of dEfOM assembly into microgels and the possible mechanism. The microgel size and granularity of dEfOM were monitored by flow cytometry. Our results suggest that, with regard to microgels, a higher temperature leads to a higher assembly capacity but also a decrease in the size distribution. By contrast, assembly at 4 °C reduces the relative assembly capacity but increases the microgel size and granularity. The size distribution of the formed microgels at the various temperatures was ordered as follows: 4 °C > 20 °C > 35 °C. The size reduction in dEfOM assembly may be closely tied to the enhancement of hydrophobic interactions. The reduction in microgel granularity in warm conditions (35 °C) in terms of the effluent water may be caused by thermally induced condensation. Overall, the findings demonstrate the effects of temperature on dEfOM assembly and can facilitate further relevant studies on aquatic organic particle formation during current global warming scenarios.

The influence of the deep subtropical reservoir on the karstic riverine carbon cycle and its regulatory factors: Insights from the seasonal and hydrological changes

Reservoirs are widely established worldwide with considerable environmental impacts, especially on the riverine carbon cycle. However, the influence of reservoirs on the cycling of different forms of carbon and its regulation factors (e.g., seasonal variations versus hydrological management) have not been simultaneously studied. To fill this knowledge gap, seasonal water samples from the deep subtropical reservoir (Longtan reservoir) in the Pearl River were collected, and the concentrations and stable carbon isotopes of dissolved inorganic carbon (DIC), dissolved organic carbon (DOC), and particulate organic carbon (POC) were determined. The variations in stable carbon isotopes of DIC (-11.4‰ to -5.2‰), DOC (-32.2‰ to -26.2‰), and POC (-38.9‰ to -25.3‰) in the river-reservoir system indicated active production and degradation processes in different layers. We estimated that up to 23.0% of DIC, 20.5% of DOC, and most POC were intercepted or degraded within the reservoir. Our results further illustrated that hydrological management (water storage regulation) and seasonal variations from different perspectives controlled the cycling of different forms of carbon in the reservoir. In addition, with the gradual increase in the number of reservoirs, hydrological management can be considered as a potentially effective strategy to adjust the carbon biogeochemical cycling of reservoirs in the future.

Regional-scale investigation of the molecular weight distribution and metal-binding behavior of dissolved organic matter from a shallow macrophytic lake using multispectral techniques

In this work, based on excitation-emission matrix spectroscopy combined with parallel factor analysis (EEM-FARAFAC) and two-dimensional correlation analysis of synchronous fluorescence spectroscopy, Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy, and combination of two spectra (2D-SF-COS, 2D-FTIR-COS, and Hetero-2D-COS), the characteristics and metal-binding behaviors of DOM in Dongping Lake were explored for molecular weight (MW), fluorescence components, and functional groups. The results showed that the entire lake was governed by protein-like materials with low MW(< 1 kDa). The complexation occurred preferentially in protein-like materials for bulk DOM after adding copper (Cu²⁺) and lead (Pb²⁺), which were changed by fractionation for MW. The active points were aliphatic C－OH for DOM-Cu and phenol －OH or polysaccharide for DOM-Pb from 2D-FTIR-COS. The protein-like components possessed higher LogK than humic-like component during binding to Cu²⁺ or Pb²⁺. Moreover, the complexing affinities of DOM-Cu (LogK_Cu: 3.26 ± 0.87-4.04 ± 0.49) were higher than those of DOM-Pb (LogK_Pb: 2.66 ± 0.52-3.78 ± 0.36). On a spatial scale, high LogK_Cu and LogK_Pb were found in the center and entrance of the lake, respectively. Humic-like component C2 in the LMW fraction possessed a stronger binding capacity with Cu²⁺. This study affords new insights into the migration and conversion of HMs in lakes.

Dissolved organic matters with low molecular weight fractions exhibit high photochemical potential for reactive oxygen formation

The photochemical properties of dissolved organic matter (DOM) were highly related to the molecular weight (MW) and organic compositions. In this study, the bulk algae- and macrophyte-derived DOM (ADOM and MDOM, respectively) and Suwannee River humic acid (SRHA) were applied and fractionated into low MW- (LMW, <1 kDa) and high MW-(HMW-, 1 kDã0.45 μm) fractions. The formation and mechanisms of photochemically produced reactive intermediates (e.g., HO•, ¹O₂, and ³CDOM*) for these bulk and MW-fractionated samples were compared via the irradiation experiment, fluorescence and Fourier transform ion cyclotron resonance mass spectrometry (FT-ICR-MS). Results showed that humic-/fulvic-like substances were mainly distributed in the LMW fraction which occupied about 44-60% of total organic carbon for ADOM and MDOM and 13% for SRHA. Photochemical experiments showed that the autochthonous DOMs (e.g., ADOM and MDOM) were characterized with comparable formation rates and quantum yields of reactive oxygens with the allochthonous SRHA, suggesting the high photochemical formation potential. Further analysis showed obvious MW-dependent heterogeneities that, irrespective of DOM types, the LMW-fraction exhibited higher formation rates and quantum yields, followed by the bulk- and then the HMW-fractions. The fluorescence and FT-ICR-MS results indicated that the unique biochemical classes, i.e., humic-/fulvic-like moieties and protein-/lipid-derived compounds in the LMW fractions may be responsible for the high apparent quantum yields. This study highlighted the importance of simultaneous characterization of MW and organic compositions for evaluating the photochemical potential and other behaviors and effects of aquatic DOMs.

Free-living and particle-attached bacterial community composition, assembly processes and determinants across spatiotemporal scales in a macrotidal temperate estuary

Bacteria play an important role in biogeochemical cycles as they transform and remineralize organic matter. Particles are notable hotspots of activity, hosting particle-attached (PA) communities that can differ largely from their free-living (FL) counterparts. However, long-standing questions remain concerning bacterial community assembly processes and driving factors. This study investigated the FL and PA community compositions and determinants within the Aulne estuary and the Bay of Brest coastal waters (France). Our results revealed that the FL and PA community compositions greatly varied with salinity and season, explaining a larger part of the variance than the sampling fraction. Both the FL and PA communities were driven by deterministic assembly processes and impacted by similar factors. The FL-PA dissimilarity varied across space and time. It decreased in the estuarine stations compared to the freshwater and marine ends, and in summer. Interestingly, a significant proportion of the FL and PA communities' β-diversity and dissimilarity was explained by cohesion, measuring the degree of taxa co-occurrence. This suggested the importance of co-occurrence patterns in shaping the FL and PA community compositions. Our results shed light on the factors influencing estuarine bacterial communities and provide a first step toward understanding their biogeochemical impacts.

Risk assessment of heavy metals in suspended particulate matter in a typical urban river

Suspended particulate matter (SPM) is a major source of contamination in urban rivers as it serves as a carrier for pollutants, such as heavy metals. In this study, the Beiyun River, northern China, was used as a case study to determine the characteristics of SPM-associated heavy metal spatial distribution, to evaluate the potential ecological risks and identify heavy metal sources. The concentrations of seven heavy metals and other associated indicators (TC, TN, TP, and OM) were measured at 12 sites and analyzed by Pearson correlation (PC) and principal component analyses (PCA). The average concentrations of Cr, Ni, Cu, Zn, As, Cd, and Pb were 70.72, 27.88, 31.35, 115.70, 27.77, 0.23, and 29.62 mg/kg, respectively, with significant spatial differences occurring between some elements. Igeo values established the ranked order of heavy metal pollutant concentrations in SPM as As > Cd > Zn > Cu > Pb > Cr > Ni. [Formula: see text] analysis demonstrated that the ranked order of potential ecological risk from the seven metals was Cd > As > Cu > Pb > Ni > Cr > Zn. Potential ecological risk index (RI) results confirmed the high potential ecological risk in the study area. Among the measured heavy metals, Cd represented the highest pollution risk, as shown by its highest [Formula: see text] value. Correlation analysis (CA) showed that Zn had a strong correlation with Cu and Pb. Significant positive correlations were found between TC, TN, TP, and Cu. Three element pairs, Zn-Cd, Cr-Cu, and Cr-Ni, were also found to have strong correlations. Zn, Cu, and Ni were mainly introduced by human activities including urban industrial sewage discharge (such as metallurgy and electroplating industrial wastewater), agricultural drainage, and landfill wastewater, while Cr mainly originated from natural processes like mineral weathering and atmospheric precipitation. This information on the concentration, risk, and sources of SPM in Beiyun River provides an important reference for the reduction of heavy metal pollution in SPM in a typical river in the Haihe River Basin (China).

Interactions between dissolved organic matter and perfluoroalkyl acids in natural rivers and lakes: A case study of the northwest of Taihu Lake Basin, China

Understanding the interactions between dissolved organic matter (DOM) and perfluoroalkyl acids (PFAAs) is essential for predicting the distribution, transport, and fate of PFAAs in aquatic environments. Based on field investigations in the northwest of Taihu Lake Basin combined with laboratory experiments, we obtained DOM and PFAA concentrations as well as compositions and investigated key factors of DOM affecting PFAA variability and capture of PFAAs by DOM. Results indicated that the total concentrations of PFAAs were 73.4-689 ng/L in surface water and that PFAAs were dominated by C3-7 perfluoroalkyl carboxylic acids and perfluorooctane sulfonic acid. The main components of DOM included tyrosine-, fulvic-, and tryptophan-like substances. The Mantel test revealed a significant positive correlation between DOM and PFAAs (P = 0.0001). Fulvic-like substances were identified as the most crucial factors affecting PFAA variability. The laboratory experiments revealed that DOM can spontaneously aggregate into a microgel. Furthermore, 19.1-50.9% of PFAAs, DOM characteristic peaks, and several metals (Ca, Mg, Cu, and Fe) can be removed during aggregation, indicating the capacity of DOM binding organic/inorganic substances. The fulvic-like substances were more effectively removed than the protein-like substances. The distribution coefficients of all PFAAs except perfluorohexanoic acid significantly correlated with their perfluorinated carbon numbers (r = 0.975, p<0.001). Our results provided insights into the interactions between DOM and PFAAs, improving the understanding of the distribution, transport, and fate of PFAAs in aquatic environments.

Role of Seasons in the Fate of Dissolved Organic Carbon and Nutrients in a Large-Scale Surface Flow Constructed Wetland

The role of seasons in the removal of dissolved organic carbon (DOC), nutrients and in changes in the spectral properties of dissolved organic matter (DOM) in a large-scale surface flow constructed wetland (SF-CW) receiving reclaimed water and composed of three basins with different vegetation patterns was studied. Dissolved nitrogen removal efficiencies within the three basins in summer (>50%) and winter (<30%) were significantly different. SF-CW water is enriched in DOC in spring and summer with average outlet concentrations above 8 mg·L−1. UV-visible indices, such as the specific absorbance at 254 nm or the spectral slope between 275 and 295 nm, did not vary over the seasons; thus, the basins did not change DOM aromaticity and average molecular weight. Synchronous fluorescence spectra showed variations in terms of protein-like and humic-like substances, the latter being more sensitive to photodegradation. A lab-scale photodegradation experiment confirmed that radiation from the sun was responsible for this decrease, showing this process could alter the composition of DOM at full-scale. DOM variations result from a seasonal competition between release by vegetation and photodegradation. These results validate the necessity for long-term monitoring of SF-CWs, and the utility of rapid optical methods to monitor DOC.

Photocatalytic Degradation of 4,4'-Isopropylidenebis(2,6-dibromophenol) on Magnetite Catalysts vs. Ozonolysis Method: Process Efficiency and Toxicity Assessment of Disinfection By-Products

Flame retardants have attracted growing environmental concern. Recently, an increasing number of studies have been conducted worldwide to investigate flame-retardant sources, environmental distribution, living organisms’ exposure, and toxicity. The presented studies include the degradation of 4,4′-isopropylidenebis(2,6-dibromophenol) (TBBPA) by ozonolysis and photocatalysis. In the photocatalytic process, nano- and micro-magnetite (n-Fe₃O₄ and μ-Fe₃O₄) are used as a catalyst. Monitoring of TBBPA decay in the photocatalysis and ozonolysis showed photocatalysis to be more effective. Significant removal of TBBPA was achieved within 10 min in photocatalysis (ca. 90%), while for ozonation, a comparable effect was observed within 70 min. To determine the best method of TBBPA degradation concentration on COD and TOC, the removals were examined. The highest oxidation state was obtained for photocatalysis on μ-Fe₃O₄, whereas for n-Fe₃O₄ and ozonolysis, the COD/TOC ratio was lower. Acute toxicity results show noticeable differences in the toxicity of TBBPA and its degradation products to Artemia franciscana and Thamnocephalus platyurus. The EC₅₀ values indicate that TBBPA degradation products were toxic to harmful, whereas the TBPPA and post-reaction mixtures were toxic to the invertebrate species tested. The best efficiency in the removal and degradation of TBBPA was in the photocatalysis process on μ-Fe₃O₄ (reaction system 1). The examined crustaceans can be used as a sensitive test for acute toxicity evaluation.

Photogeochemistry of particulate organic matter in aquatic systems: A review

Photochemical transformation of natural organic matter in aquatic environments strongly impacts the environmental behaviors of carbon, nutrients, and pollutants by affecting their solubility, toxicity, bioavailability, and mobility. However, the role of particulate organic matter (POM) in environmental photogeochemistry has received much less attention than that of dissolved organic matter (DOM). In this study, a systematic overview was conducted to summarize the photodissolution and photoflocculation of POM in aquatic systems. The photodissolution of various POM, such as resuspended sediments and algal detritus, could be a potential and important source of DOM in the overlying waters, and these photoreleased DOM were dominated by humic-like components. The photogeochemistry of POM is thought to proceed via direct photochemical reactions and reactive radical-dominated indirect processes. Photodissolution can modify the bioavailability of organic matter and influence the biogeochemical cycling of nutrients, heavy metals, and organic pollutants. In addition, the photo-induced flocculation of DOM to POM could also influence the transport and transformation of organic matter and its associated pollutants. The photochemistry of POM can be significantly influenced by several environmental factors, including irradiation wavelength and intensity, organic matter properties, and radical oxygen species. POM photogeochemistry is one of the most important components of the global cycling of natural organic matter. Further studies regarding photogeochemistry should be conducted to overcome the potential problems arising from the concurrent photodegradation of organic matter and to further develop more filed investigations and analytical methods.

Exploring applicability of end member mixing approach for predicting environmental reactivity of dissolved organic matter

Despite the wide applications of end member mixing analysis (EMMA) for assigning the sources of dissolved organic matter (DOM) in aquatic environment, there was no study attempting to test the applicability of EMMA for predicting environmental reactivity of DOM. This study aimed to explore the feasibility of EMMA, or the concept of ideal mixing behavior of end members, for describing several well-known DOM reactivities using two DOM end member sources (i.e., soil and algae) at varying mixing ratios. The selected DOM reactivities were trihalomethane formation potential (THMFP), mineral adsorption amount, pyrene binding, membrane resistance, and biodegradation potential. Among the tested DOM functions, all were found to follow the ideal mixing behavior, presenting the linear relationships between the source mixing ratios and the tested reactivity with the R² value of >0.80. The ideal mixing behavior of the DOM functions was more pronounced than that based on several spectroscopic indicators derived from UV absorption and fluorescence spectroscopy. This study provided insight into potential applicability and limitation of EMMA approach in monitoring and predicting environmental functions of DOM in aquatic systems where identified DOM sources are mixed and vary dynamically with the mixing ratios.

Degradation of Minocycline by the Adsorption-Catalysis Multifunctional PVDF-PVP-TiO2 Membrane: Degradation Kinetics, Photocatalytic Efficiency, and Toxicity of Products

The photocatalytic degradation of minocycline was studied by using polyvinylidene fluoride-polyvinylpyrrolidone-TiO₂ (PVDF-PVP-TiO₂) fiber mats prepared by an electrospinning technology. The influences of the TiO₂ dosage, minocycline concentrations, inorganic anions, pH values, and dissolved organic matter (DOM) concentrations on the degradation kinetics were investigated. A mass of 97% minocycline was degraded in 45 min at 5% TiO₂ dosage. The corresponding decomposition rate constant was 0.069 min^-1. The inorganic anions affected the minocycline decomposition in the order of HCO₃^- > Cl^- > SO₄^2- > NO₃^-, which was confirmed by the results of electron spin resonance (ESR) spectra. The lowest electrical energy per order (E_EO) was 6.5 Wh/L. Over five cycles, there was no change in the photocatalytic performance of the degrading minocycline. Those investigations suggested that effective degradation of minocycline could be reached in the PVDF-PVP-TiO₂ fiber mats with a low energy consumption, good separation and, good recovery. Three photocatalytic decomposition pathways of minocycline were proposed: (i) hydroxyl substitution of the acylamino group; (ii) hydroxyl substitution of the amide group, and (iii) a cleavage of the methyl groups and further oxidation of the amino group by OH. Potential risks caused by TP159 and TP99 should not be ignored, while the TP90 are nontoxic. Tests indicated that the toxicity of the photocatalytic process may be persistent if minocycline and its products were not mineralized completely.

Density currents affect the vertical evolution of dissolved organic matter chemistry in a large tributary of the Three Gorges Reservoir during the water-level rising period

Reservoirs have boomed for clean energy in recent decades and interrupted the natural river ecosystem severely. Riverine dissolved organic matter (DOM), which regulates aquatic food web dynamics, water quality, and carbon storage, has been significantly impacted by reservoir construction. However, the vertical evolution of DOM properties and its controlling mechanisms in large reservoirs with hydrological management are not well investigated, limiting the understanding of carbon cycling (e.g., CO₂ emissions and carbon burial) in reservoirs. To fill this knowledge gap, multiple complementary techniques including optical spectroscopy and ultrahigh-resolution Fourier transform ion cyclotron resonance mass spectrometry were applied to track composition and property changes of DOM along the vertical profile in a large deep tributary of the world largest Three Gorges Reservoir (TGR) during the water-level rising period. The results indicated that middle and bottom water have relatively more terrestrial input and recalcitrant DOM, while surface water has relatively more autochthonous input and labile DOM. Integrated with the comprehensive analysis of DOM chemistry in a high-resolution vertical profile, the primary production and photodegradation in surface water, the density currents induced water intrusion from mainstream to tributaries, in middle water, and the biodegradation in bottom water are main factors controlling the vertical heterogeneity of reservoir DOM during the water-level rising period. This vertical increase of DOM recalcitrance likely contributes to the enhancement of organic carbon burial in TGR during the water-level rising period. All in all, this study provides new insight into the vertical variations of riverine DOM induced by reservoir construction, and emphasizes the important role of reservoir construction in carbon sequestration.

Comparison in UV-induced photodegradation properties of dissolved organic matters with different origins

Dissolved organic matter (DOM) is ubiquitous in aquatic environments, whose behaviors and fate are highly related to the chemical compositions and size distribution. In this study, the UV-induced photodegradation properties of DOMs with different origins (i.e., macrophyte- and algae-derived) were investigated using absorption and fluorescence spectroscopy as well as flow field-flow fractionation (FlFFF). Results showed that, irrespective of DOM origins, the chromophoric components could be more effectively photo-degraded than the non-chromophoric ones. Though the two DOMs were characterized with similar fluorophores, the photodegradation properties showed obvious heterogeneities in DOM origins and molecular weights (MWs). Compared to macrophyte-derived DOM (MDOM), the algae-derived DOM (ADOM) exhibited a higher degradation rate and efficiency due to the abundance of labile components like newborn protein-like substances. The FlFFF results revealed a high photo-preferability of 100 kDa-0.45 μm protein-like MDOM and same photo-sensitivity of the size-fractionated humic-like moieties, testifying the reduction of molecular sizes during the photodegradation. However, the increase in relative percentage for 100 kDa-0.45 μm protein-like components and 5-15 kDa humic-like moieties implied a possible enhancement of molecular sizes for ADOM during the early period (i.e., the first hour) of photodegradation. This study provides new insights into the origin-related heterogeneities in compositions and size distribution for DOM transformation.

Characterization and biogeochemical implications of dissolved organic matter in aquatic environments

Dissolved organic matter (DOM) is viewed as one of the most chemically active organic substances on earth. It plays vital roles in the fate, bioavailability and toxicity of aquatic exogenous chemical species (e.g., heavy metals, organic pollutants, and nanomaterials). The characteristics of DOM such low concentrations, salt interference and complexity in aquatic environments and limitations of pretreatment for sample preparation and application of characterization techniques severely limit understanding of its nature and environmental roles. This review provides a characterization continuum of aquatic DOM, and demonstrate its biogeochemical implications, enabling in-depth insight into its nature and environmental roles. A synthesis of the effective DOM pretreatment strategies, comprising extraction and fractionation methods, and characterization techniques is presented. Additionally, the biogeochemical dynamics of aquatic DOM and its environmental implications are discussed. The findings indicate the collection of representative DOM samples from water as the first and critical step for characterizing its properties, dynamics, and environmental implications. However, various pretreatment procedures may alter DOM composition and structure, producing highly variable recoveries and even influencing its subsequent characterization. Therefore, complimentary use of various characterization techniques is highly recommended to obtain as much information on DOM as possible, as each characterization technique exhibits various advantages and limitations. Moreover, DOM could markedly change the physical and chemical properties of exogenous chemical species, influencing their transformation and mobility, and finally altering their potential bioavailability and toxicity. Several research gaps to be addressed include the impact of pretreatment on the composition and structure of aquatic DOM, molecular-level structural elucidation for DOM, and assessment of the effects of DOM dynamics on the fate, bioavailability and toxicity of exogenous chemical species.

Dynamic exchange between particulate and dissolved matter following sequential resuspension of particles from an urban watershed under photo-irradiation

Particulate matter (PM) has long-term effects on water quality compared to dissolved matter (DM) during downstream transfer after inflows into an aquatic environment. In the present study, the characteristics, behavior, and effects of PM from an urban watershed under photo-irradiation were investigated through sequential resuspensions before being compared. Changes in the organic matter content, heavy metals (Mn, Fe, Zn, Pb), spectroscopic indices (SUVA₂₅₄, slope ratio (S_R), humidification index (HIX), fluorescence index (FI), and biological index (BIX)), excitation-emission matrix combined with parallel factor analysis components (EEM-PARAFAC), and disinfection by-product formation potential (DBPFP) were analyzed. According to our results, light enhanced the release of organic matter from PM but reduced dissolved heavy metals. The PM_U affected by urban-derived pollutants (i.e., rainfall particles, road-deposited sediment, sewer-pipeline-deposited sediment) exhibited higher quantities of terrestrial humic-like organic matter than PM_R, which contains base particles from riverines (i.e., soil, sediments). For the PM_U, the humic-like fluorescent components (C1 and C2) enhanced under light conditions with every resuspension, whereas the components decreased in the PM_R. Consistent with the PARAFAC results, the trihalomethane formation potential (THMFP) of the PM_U was enhanced by approximately 2.8 times more than that of the PM_R, and exhibited a high correlation with the fluorescent components (C1, r = 0.81, p < 0.001). The principal component analysis results also confirmed that the characteristics of dynamic exchanges between PM and DM were distinguished by PM sources and light, and the photo-released DM and their spectral characteristics displayed opposite behaviors depending on the PM sources during the sequential resuspensions.

Temporal dynamics of carbon sequestration in coastal North Atlantic fjord system as seen through dissolved organic matter characterisation

Fjord systems in higher latitudes are unique coastal water ecosystems that facilitate the study of dissolved organic matter (DOM) dynamics from surface to deeper waters. The current work was undertaken in the Trondheim fjord characterized by North Atlantic waters, and compared DOM fractions from three depths - surface (3 m), intermediate (225 m) and deep (440 m) in four seasons, from late spring to winter in 2017. The high-resolution mass spectrometry data showed that DOM composition varies significantly in different seasons rather than in different depths in the fjord systems. The bacterial community composition was comparable except at spring surface and summer intermediate depths. Bacterial production was minimal below the euphotic layer, even with sufficient availability of inorganic nutrients. The bacterial production rate in the surface waters was about 7 times and over 50 times higher than that of the aphotic zone in the winter and the summer seasons, respectively. The surface heterotrophic microbial communities might have rapidly consumed the available labile DOM, with the production of more refractory DOM limiting bacterial production in aphotic layers. The greater number of CRAM-like formulas determined in the surface waters compared to other depths supports our hypothesis. The refractory DOM sequestered in the water column may either be exported into sediments attached to particulate matter and marine gels, or may escape into the atmosphere as carbon dioxide/monoxide during the photochemical oxidation pathways, suggesting that it is involved in climate change scenarios.

Hydrologic heterogeneity induced variability of dissolved organic matter chemistry among tributaries of the Three Gorges Reservoir

Dissolved organic matter (DOM) chemistry in rivers regulates aquatic food web dynamics, water quality, and carbon storage. The operation of reservoirs represents one of the major human modifications on the natural flow of rivers, which can affect DOM chemistry. Although hydrologic heterogeneity has been observed in different segments of the reservoir, whether it will structure DOM chemistry is poorly assessed, which is critical to better constrain the carbon cycle in reservoirs. By the combination of a series of techniques including stable carbon isotopes, optical spectroscopy, and ultrahigh-resolution mass spectrometry, here we showed that hydrologic heterogeneity induced changes in DOM molecular composition between two large tributaries, named Shennongxi (SR) and Xiangxi (XR) rivers, of the Three Gorges Reservoir (TGR). With water intrusion from mainstream, SR had relatively higher terrestrial and more recalcitrant DOM than XR, where no water intrusion from the mainstream was observed. In contrast, the averaged relative abundance of autochthonous input and biological lability of DOM along upstream to downstream transect were higher in XR than that in SR. The presence or absence of water intrusion from mainstream to tributaries induced by hydrologic management is likely the main factor controlling DOM chemistry in different tributaries of the TGR. By linking DOM chemistry in the water column with that in surface sediments, we suggest that hydrologic management of reservoir likely affects the preferential preservation of recalcitrant DOM in surface sediments, which further affects the organic carbon burial and the river carbon cycle. With reservoir construction increasing worldwide, further studies are encouraged to investigate the DOM chemistry under different hydrologic management of reservoirs to better constrain and predict the carbon cycling in fluvial ecosystems.

Modelling of impact of presence/absence of suspended particulate organic matter from river and sea and effluent wastewater on fluorescence signal in the coastal area of Gapeau River

Organic matter has an important role in biogeochemistry in aquatic environments. This study investigated impact of suspended particulate organic matter (SPOM) on fluorescence signal of mixtures of three water types (river water RW, sea water SW, effluent wastewater WW) using fluorescence (excitation-emission matrix, EEM) spectroscopy and parallel factor analysis (PARAFAC) and multilinear regression. Four irradiation experiments (Expt-1, Expt-2, Expt-3, and Expt-4) were conducted during different times of the year ( two in autumn, one in winter, and one in spring season). Samples were exposed to natural sunlight on laboratory rooftop in University of Toulon, France, with another set of samples kept in dark as control samples. Three component (C1, C2, C3) model was validated by split-half and Concordia from the whole EEM dataset of all irradiation experiments. No protein-like fluorophores was found. The study revealed the effect of SPOM presence/absence on fluorescence signal of DOM and on resulting parameters of multilinear regression MLR model and kinetic constant of these MLR parameters. Kinetic constant (k) for all MLR coefficients was in order of greatness as Expt-1 (SPOM of WW only in mixtures) > Expt-3 (SPOM of SW only in mixtures) > Expt-2 (SPOM of RW only in mixtures)> Expt-4 (SPOM of RW + SW + WW in mixtures) indicating that SPOM of WW is the most resistant to photodegradation. For dark control samples, only relative standard deviation RSD could be calculated from dataset. RSD values for C3 were the highest indicating its chaotic variations, and the lowest RSD values were found for both C1 and C2 for all experiments. Statistical differences has been found between control and irradiated experiments. These models developed in this study can be used to predict fluorescence signal of anthropogenic effluent DOM during its transport in river systems to coastal zone.

Hydrological management affected dissolved organic matter chemistry and organic carbon burial in the Three Gorges Reservoir

With the linkage between dissolved organic matter (DOM) and the characteristics of natural ecosystem assessed extensively, the properties of DOM in reservoirs, the typical human interrupted ecosystems, have been focused on in recent years, which is critical for the understanding of human impacts on watershed ecosystems and carbon cycling. This study aims to analyze the effect of hydrological management on the DOM chemistry and organic carbon burial in Daning River tributary of the world's largest Three Gorges Reservoir (TGR). Based on the application of a combined approach including bulk geochemical analyses, optical spectroscopy, and ultrahigh-resolution Fourier transform ion cyclotron resonance mass spectrometry, various sources of DOM (terrestrial, anthropogenic, and autochthonous sources) were revealed. An increasing trend of terrestrial and recalcitrant DOM was observed along the upstream to downstream transect of Daning River tributary, which was mainly caused by the water intrusion with a higher terrestrial and recalcitrant signature from mainstream to tributary resulted from hydrological management of TGR. Integrated with the analysis of sedimentary organic matter in Daning River tributary in the past decade (after the construction of TGR), our work suggests that organic carbon burial in the reservoir could be enhanced by hydrological management-induced variation in DOM chemistry. Further studies are needed to better constrain the effects of damming reservoirs on carbon cycling considering their booming all over the world.

The Stratified Distribution of Dissolved Organic Matter in an AMD Lake Revealed by Multi-sample Evaluation Procedure

As a typical extreme environment, acid mine drainage (AMD) has been extensively studied for its biogeochemical cycle, but little is known about the quality of dissolved organic matter (DOM) in AMD. In this study, DOM molecules in an AMD lake were detected with Fourier transform ion cyclotron resonance mass spectrometry (FT-ICR MS), and the change of DOM molecules in the stratified water column was analyzed with a multi-sample evaluation procedure. The results demonstrate that DOM quality is highly stratified and can be linked with severe biogeochemical gradients. In the surface layer, DOM molecules can be distinguished by low quantities and intensities, as well as potential photodegradation products. Oxygen-poor and oxygen-rich molecules alternately dominate the chemocline, which can be explained by the redox-dependent adsorption/desorption of DOM on metastable secondary minerals. A rich and abundant DOM pool with a high proportion of heteroatoms exists at the bottom which can be significantly influenced by material exchange with sediments. These findings emphasize the active role of DOM in extreme AMD environments and expand the understanding of the carbon cycle in the hydrosphere.

Mechanisms of photochemical release of dissolved organic matter and iron from resuspended sediments

Photochemical reactions can alter the transformation of sedimentary organic matter into dissolved organic matter (DOM) and affect its ultimate fate in water ecosystems. In the present study, the photorelease of DOM and Fe from resuspended lake sediments was investigated under different O₂ and NO₃^- concentration conditions to study the mechanisms of DOM and Fe photorelease. The amount of photoreleased Fe, which ranged from 0.22 to 0.70 μmol/L, was significantly linearly correlated with the amount of photoreleased DOM. O₂ and NO₃^- could promote the photochemical release of DOM and Fe, especially during the initial 4 h irradiation. In general, the order of the photorelease rates of DOM and Fe under different conditions was as follows: NO₃^-/aerobic > aerobic ≈ NO₃^-/anaerobic > anaerobic. The photorelease rates of DOM and Fe were higher for the initial 4 hr irradiation than these for the subsequent 8 hr irradiation. The photorelease of DOM and Fe is thought to proceed via direct photodissolution and indirect processes. The relative contributions of indirect processes (>60%) was much greater than that of direct photodissolution (<40%). The photoproduced H₂O₂ under aerobic and anaerobic conditions indicated that hydroxyl radicals (•OH) are involved in the photorelease of DOM. Using •OH scavengers, it was found that 38.7%, 53.7%, and 77.6% of photoreleased DOM was attributed to •OH under anaerobic, aerobic, and NO₃^-/aerobic conditions, respectively. Our findings provide insights for understanding the mechanisms and the important role of •OH in the DOM and Fe photorelease from resuspended sediments.

Assessment of Aqueous Extraction Methods on Extractable Organic Matter and Hydrophobic/Hydrophilic Fractions of Virgin Forest Soils

The assessment of water-extractable organic matter using an autoclave can provide useful information on physical, chemical, and biological changes within the soil. The present study used virgin forest soils from Chini Forest Reserve, Langkawi Island, and Kenyir Forest Reserve (Malaysia), extracted using different extraction methods. The dissolved organic carbon (DOC), total dissolved nitrogen (TDN), total dissolved phosphorus (TDP), and ammonium-nitrate content were higher in the autoclave treatments, up to 3.0, 1.3, 1.2, and 1.4 times more than by natural extraction (extracted for 24 h at room temperature). Overall, the highest extractable DOC, TDN, TDP, ammonium and nitrate could be seen under autoclaved conditions 121 °C 2×, up to 146.74 mg C/L, 8.97 mg N/L, 0.23 mg P/L, 5.43 mg N mg/L and 3.47 N mg/L, respectively. The soil extracts became slightly acidic with a higher temperature and longer duration. Similar trends were observed in the humic and nonhumic substances, where different types of soil extract treatments influenced the concentrations of the fractions. Different soil extraction methods can provide further details, thus widening the application of soil extracts, especially in microbes.

Tracing sewage contamination based on sterols and stanols markers within the mainland aquatic ecosystem: a case study of Linggi catchment, Malaysia

Sewage contamination is a principal concern in water quality management as pathogens in sewage can cause diseases and lead to detrimental health effects in humans. This study examines the distribution of seven sterol compounds, namely coprostanol, epi-coprostanol, cholesterol, cholestanol, stigmasterol, campesterol, and β-sitosterol in filtered and particulate phases of sewage treatment plants (STPs), groundwater, and river water. For filtered samples, solid-phase extraction (SPE) was employed while for particulate samples were sonicated. Quantification was done by using gas chromatography-mass spectrometer (GC-MS). Faecal stanols (coprostanol and epi-coprostanol) and β-sitosterol were dominant in most STP samples. Groundwater samples were influenced by natural/biogenic sterol, while river water samples were characterized by a mixture of sources. Factor loadings from principal component analysis (PCA) defined fresh input of biogenic sterol and vascular plants (positive varimax factor (VF)1), aged/treated sewage sources (negative VF1), fresh- and less-treated sewage and domestic sources (positive VF2), biological sewage effluents (negative VF2), and fresh-treated sewage sources (VF3) in the samples. Association of VF loadings and factor score values illustrated the correlation of STP effluents and the input of biogenic and plant sterol sources in river and groundwater samples of Linggi. This study focuses on sterol distribution and its potential sources; these findings will aid in sewage assessment in the aquatic environment.

Stickiness of extracellular polymeric substances on different surfaces via magnetic tweezers

Organic particle dynamics in the surface ocean plays a critical part in the marine carbon cycle. Aggregation of marine organic particles drives their downward transport to support various marine organisms on their transit to the sediments. Extracellular polymeric substances (EPS) from various microbes are a major contributor to the oceanic organic particle pool. The stickiness of EPS is expected to play a determining role in the aggregation process of particles; however, stickiness parameters are usually indirectly estimated through data fitting without direct assessment. Here a magnetic tweezer method was developed to quantitatively assess the stickiness of three model EPS produced by: Amphora sp., (diatom), Emiliania huxleyi (coccolithophore), and Sagittula stellata (bacteria), under different in vitro environmental conditions (salinity or EDTA complexed cations) and surface matrices (EPS-EPS and bare glass). Our results showed the stickiness of three microbial EPS decreasing for S. stellata > E. huxleyi > Amphora sp., in line with their decreasing protein-to-carbohydrate (P/C) ratios (related to their relative hydrophobicity). The data not only emphasize the importance of hydrophobicity on EPS stickiness, but also demonstrates that salinity and the nature of the substrate surface can influence the stickiness. Furthermore, we investigated stickiness between various types of EPS, and the observed selective stickiness of EPS between species may shed light on the interactions among heterogeneous marine microorganisms. Overall, this newly developed system provides a platform to assess the EPS stickiness to advance our understanding of the aggregation and sedimentation process of organic particles that are critical for the fate of organic carbon as well as for biofilm formation and microbial colonization of surfaces in the ocean.
