Removal of ibuprofen from aqueous media by adsorption: A comprehensive review

MgO-loaded tubular ceramic membrane with spatial nanoconfinement for enhanced catalytic ozonation in refractory wastewater treatment

Heterogeneous catalytic ozonation (HCO) enables the destruction of organic pollutants in wastewater via oxidation by powerful hydroxyl radicals (·OH). However, the availability of short-lived ·OH in aqueous bulk is low in practical treatment scenarios due to mass transfer limitations and quenching of water constituents. Herein, we overcome these challenges by loading MgO catalysts inside the pores of a tubular ceramic membrane (denoted as CCM) to confine ·OH within the nanopores and achieve efficient pollutant removal. When the pore size of the membrane was reduced from 1000 to 50 nm, the removal of ibuprofen (IBU) by CCM was increased from 49.6 % to 90.2 % due to the enhancement of ·OH enrichment in the nanospace. In addition, the CCM exhibited high catalytic activity in the presence of co-existing ions and over a wide pH range, as well as good self-cleaning ability in treating secondary wastewater. The experimental results revealed that ·OH were the dominant reactive oxygen species (ROS) in pollutant degradation, while surface hydroxyl groups were active sites for the generation of ·OH via ozone decomposition. This work provides a promising strategy to enhance the utilization of ·OH in HCO for the efficient degradation of organic pollutants in wastewater under spatial confinement.

Geopolymer-Based Materials for the Removal of Ibuprofen: A Preliminary Study

Every year, new compounds contained in consumer products, such as detergents, paints, products for personal hygiene, and drugs for human and veterinary use, are identified in wastewater and are added to the list of molecules that need monitoring. These compounds are indicated with the term emerging contaminants (or Contaminants of Emerging Concern, CECs) since they are potentially dangerous for the environment and human health. To date, among the most widely used methodologies for the removal of CECs from the aquatic environment, adsorption processes play a role of primary importance, as they have proven to be characterized by high removal efficiency, low operating and management costs, and an absence of undesirable by-products. In this paper, the adsorption of ibuprofen (IBU), a nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drug widely used for treating inflammation or pain, was performed for the first time using two different types of geopolymer-based materials, i.e., a metakaolin-based (GMK) and an organic-inorganic hybrid (GMK-S) geopolymer. The proposed adsorbing matrices are characterized by a low environmental footprint and have been easily obtained as powders or as highly porous filters by direct foaming operated directly into the adsorption column. Preliminary results demonstrated that these materials can be effectively used for the removal of ibuprofen from contaminated water (showing a concentration decrease of IBU up to about 29% in batch, while an IBU removal percentage of about 90% has been reached in continuous), thus suggesting their potential practical application.

Adsorption and leaching of fluorotelomer compounds and perfluoroalkyl acids in aqueous media by activated carbon prepared from municipal biosolids

Perfluoroalkyl acids (PFAAs) are ubiquitous in nature and pose serious health risks to humans and animals. Limiting PFAA exposure requires novel technology for their effective removal from water. We investigated the efficacy of biosolid-based activated carbon (Bio-SBAC) in removing frequently detected PFAAs and their precursor fluorotelomer compounds at environmentally relevant concentrations (∼50 μg/L). Batch experiments were performed to investigate adsorption kinetics, isotherms, and leachability. Bio-SBAC achieved >95% removal of fluorotelomeric compounds, indicating that the need for PFAA removal from the environment could be minimised if the precursors were targeted. Kinetic data modelling suggested that chemisorption is the dominant PFAA adsorption mechanism. As evidenced by the isotherm modelling results, Freundlich adsorption intensity, n-1, values of <1 (0.707-0.938) indicate chemisorption. Bio-SBAC showed maximum capacities for the adsorption of perfluorooctanoic acid (1429 μg/g) and perfluorononanoic acid (1111 μg/g). Batch desorption tests with 100 mg/L humic acid and 10 g/L NaCl showed that Bio-SBAC effectively retained the adsorbed PFAA with little or no leaching, except perfluorobutanoic acid. Overall, this study revealed that Bio-SBAC is a value-added material with promising characteristics for PFAA adsorption and no leachability. Additionally, it can be incorporated into biofilters to remove PFAAs from stormwater, presenting a sustainable approach to minimise biosolid disposal and improve the quality of wastewater before discharge into receiving waters.

Acid-activated corn silk as a promising phytosorbent for uptake of Malachite green and Cd (II) ion from simulated wastewater: equilibrium, kinetic and thermodynamic studies

Malachite green (MG) dye and cadmium metal ion are toxic pollutants that should be removed from aqueous environment. The recent study aimed to examine the adsorption behavior of MG dye and Cd (II) from wastewater onto low-cost adsorbent prepared by activating corn silk with nitric acid (ACS) and characterized by SEM, FTIR, XRD, BET and TGA. The optimum MG and Cd (II) adsorption was observed at pH 7 and pH 9 and maximum uptake of both pollutants was at 0.5 g dosage, 60 mins contact time and 20 mg/L initial concentration. The retention of dye and metal ion by the studied adsorbent was best fit to Langmuir isotherm and Pseudo-second order kinetics. The maximum monolayer coverage capacity of ACS for MG dye and Cd (II) ion was 18.38 mg/g and 25.53 mg/g, respectively. Thermodynamic studies predicted a spontaneous reaction with exothermic process for MG dye whereas an endothermic and spontaneous process was confirmed for Cd ion based on estimated parameters. The adsorption mechanism of MG dye and Cd (II) uptake was by combination of electrostatic interaction, pore diffusion, ion exchange, pie-pie attraction, hydrogen bonding, and complexation. The adsorbed pollutants were effectively desorbed with significant regeneration efficiency after successive five cycles that proved the potential of low-cost biosorbent for selective sequestration of cationic dye and divalent metal ion from effluents.

Enantioselective separation and determination of ibuprofen: Stereoselective pharmacokinetics, pharmacodynamics and analytical methods

Ibuprofen (IBP), the 29th most prescribed drug in the United States in 2019, is a widely used nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drug (NSAID) comprising two enantiomers, (R)-IBP and (S)-IBP, collectively known as (RS)-IBP. This critical review examines analytical techniques for the enantioselective separation and determination of IBP enantiomers, crucial for pharmaceutical and clinical applications. The review focuses on state-of-the-art methods, including chromatographic techniques including high-performance liquid chromatography, gas chromatography, liquid chromatography-tandem mass spectrometry, and some other techniques. This review addresses pharmacokinetics, pharmacology, and side effects of each enantiomer, ensuring safe drug usage. By consolidating diverse analytical methods and their applicability in different matrices, this review serves as a valuable resource for researchers, analysts, and practitioners in pharmaceutical analysis, pharmacology, and clinical studies.

Environmental remediation of the norfloxacin in water by adsorption: Advances, current status and prospects

Antibiotics are considered as the new generation water pollutants as these disturb endocrine systems if water contaminated with antibiotics is consumed. Among many antibiotics norfloxacin is present in various natural water bodies globally. This antibiotic is considered an emerging pollutant due to its low degradation in aquatic animals. Besides, it has many side effects on human vital organs. Therefore, the present article discusses the recent advances in the removal of norfloxacin by adsorption. This article describes the presence of norfloxacin in natural water, consumption, toxicity, various adsorbents for norfloxacin removal, optimization factors for norfloxacin removal, kinetics, thermodynamics, modeling, adsorption mechanism and regeneration of the adsorbents. Adsorption takes place in a monolayer following the Langmuir model. The Pseudo-second order model represents the kinetic data. The adsorption capacity ranged from 0.924 to 1282 mg g-1. In this sense, the parameters such as the NFX concentration added to the adsorbent textural properties exerted a great influence. Besides, the fixed bed-based removal at a large scale is also included. In addition to this, the simulation studies were also discussed to describe the adsorption mechanism. Finally, the research challenges and future perspectives have also been highlighted. This article will be highly useful for academicians, researchers, industry persons, and government authorities for designing future advanced experiments.

Thermally-activated gelatin-chitosan-MOF hybrid aerogels for efficient removal of ibuprofen and naproxen

Nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAIDs) are one of the most frequently used drugs and have been frequently detected in aquatic environments. This paper demonstrates a thermally-activated gelatin-chitosan and amine-functionalized metal-organic framework (UiO-66-NH2) aerogel (CGC-MOF), which was successfully synthesized for the efficient removal of ibuprofen (IBP) and naproxen (NPX). Various characterization tools were used to systematically analyze the microstructure and physicochemical properties of the synthesized aerogel. In addition, the effect of key reaction parameters as well as batch and continuous-flow fixed-bed column experiments were carried out to elucidate the adsorption process. Several functional groups in the biopolymer network, combined with excellent MOF properties, synergistically couple to form an adsorbent with great performance. The mesoporous aerogel activated at 200 °C (CGC-MOF200) exhibited a high specific surface area (819.6 m2/g) that is valuable in providing abundant adsorption active sites that facilitate the efficient adsorption of IBP and NPX. CGC-MOF200 exhibited an excellent removal of IBP and NPX, accounting to 99.28 % and 96.39 %, respectively. The adsorption process followed the pseudo-second-order kinetics and the Freundlich isotherm models, suggesting heterogeneous and chemisorption adsorption processes. Overall, this work provides new and valuable insights into the development of a promising biopolymer-MOF composite aerogel for environmental remediation.

MIL-53(Al)@HC nanohybrid for bicomponent adsorption of ibuprofen and metsulfuron-methyl: Application of macro- and microscopic models and competition between contaminants

In this work, a hybrid was synthesized by hydrothermal treatment, metal-organic framework functionalized with hydrochar (MIL-53(Al)@HC) for the adsorption of two organic molecules Ibuprofen sodium salt and Metsulfuron-methyl, in binary system. The hybrid is composed of 71 wt% biomass and 29 wt% MOF. TGA, BET, FTIR, XRD and XPS characterization techniques were used to verify the hybridization of MIL-53(Al)@HC. The MIL-53(Al)@HC hybrid showed in situ MIL-53(Al) crystal growth capability. Batch adsorption experiments were carried out to study the effect of pH, adsorbent dosage, adsorbate concentration, contact time and temperature effect. The results obtained under extreme conditions demonstrate that MIL-53(Al)@HC is an adsorbent capable of removing >98% of IBU and MTM in mixture at a concentration of 0.3 mM (68 ppm IBU and 115 ppm MTM). The pseudo-second order model adequately described the adsorption kinetics and equilibrium using the Sips and Freundlich models. The physico-statistical microscopic model (2-layer) corroborated the hypothesis of a multilayer adsorption proposed by the macroscopic Freundlich model. In the competition study between IBU and MTM, both antagonistic and synergistic effects were observed. In the thermodynamic study, positive values of (ΔH°) indicate that adsorption is endothermic in nature and that the dominant mechanism is physisorption. A mechanism of adsorption by hydrogen bridging and non-covalent π*-π adsorbate-adsorbate and adsorbate-adsorbate-adsorbate interactions was proposed. The desorption study shows that in 5 washing cycles MIL-53(Al)@HC is a recoverable material.

Effect of ibuprofen (IBU) on the sulfur-based and calcined pyrite-based autotrophic denitrification (SCPAD) systems with two filling modes: Performance and toxic response mechanism

To investigate the effect of ibuprofen (IBU) on the sulfur-based and calcined pyrite-based autotrophic denitrification (SCPAD) systems, two individual reactors with the layered filling (L-SCPAD) and mixed filling (M-SCPAD) systems were established via sulfur and calcined pyrite. Effluent NO3--N concentration of the L-SCPAD and M-SCPAD systems was first increased to 6.44, 0.93 mg/L under 0.5 mg/L IBU exposure and gradually decreased to 1.66 mg/L, 0 mg/L under 4.0 mg/L IBU exposure, indicating that NO3--N removal performance of the M-SCPAD system was better than that of the L-SCPAD system. The variation of extracellular polymeric substances (EPS) characteristics demonstrated that more EPS was secreted in the M-SCPAD system compared to the L-SCPAD system, which contributed to forming a more stable biofilm structure and protecting microorganisms against the toxicity of IBU in the M-SCPAD system. Moreover, the increased electron transfer impedance and decreased cytochrome c implied that IBU inhibited the electron transfer efficiency of the L-SCPAD and M-SCPAD systems. The decreased adenosine triphosphate (ATP) and electron transfer system activity (ETSA) content showed that IBU inhibited metabolic activity, but the M-SCPAD system exhibited higher metabolic activity compared to the L-SCPAD system. In addition, the analysis of the bacterial community indicated a more stable abundance of nitrogen removal function bacteria (Bacillus) in the M-SCPAD system compared to the L-SCPAD system, which was conducive to maintaining a stable denitrification performance. The toxic response mechanism based on the biogeobattery effect was proposed in the SCPAD systems under IBU exposure. This study provided an important reference for the long-term toxic effect of IBU on the SCPAD systems.

Occurrence, fate, and potential risk of pharmaceutical pollutants in agriculture: Challenges and environmentally friendly solutions

In recent years, pharmaceutical active compounds (PhACs) have attained global prevalence. The behavior of PhACs in agricultural soils is complex and depends on several factors, such as the nature of the compounds and their physicochemical characteristics, which affect their fate and potential threats to human health, ecosystems, and the environment. The detection of residual pharmaceutical content is possible in both agricultural soils and environmental matrices. PhACs are commonly found in agricultural soil, with concentrations varying significantly, ranging from as low as 0.048 ng g-1 to as high as 1420.76 mg kg-1. The distribution and persistence of PhACs in agriculture can lead to the leaching of these toxic pollutants into surface water, groundwater, and vegetables/plants, resulting in human health risks and environmental pollution. Biological degradation or bioremediation plays a critical role in environmental protection and efficiently eliminates contamination by hydrolytic and/or photochemical reactions. Membrane bioreactors (MBRs) have been investigated as the most recent approach for the treatment of emerging persistent micropollutants, including PhACs, from wastewater sources. MBR- based technologies have proven to be effective in eliminating pharmaceutical compounds, achieving removal rates of up to 100%. This remarkable outcome is primarily facilitated by the processes of biodegradation and metabolization. In addition, phytoremediation (i.e., constructed wetlands), microalgae-based technologies, and composting can be highly efficient in remediating PhACs in the environment. The exploration of key mechanisms involved in pharmaceutical degradation has revealed a range of approaches, such as phytoextraction, phytostabilization, phytoaccumulation, enhanced rhizosphere biodegradation, and phytovolatilization. The well-known advanced/tertiary removal of sustainable sorption by biochar, activated carbon, chitosan, etc. has high potential and yields excellent quality effluents. Adsorbents developed from agricultural by-products have been recognized to eliminate pharmaceutical compounds and are cost-effective and eco-friendly. However, to reduce the potentially harmful impacts of PhACs, it is necessary to focus on advanced technologies combined with tertiary processes that have low cost, high efficiency, and are energy-saving to remove these emerging pollutants for sustainable development.

Occurrence, toxicity, impact and removal of selected non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAIDs): A review

Non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAIDs) are among the most frequently used pharmaceuticals for human therapy, pet therapeutics, and veterinary feeds, enabling them to enter into water sources such as wastewater, soil and sediment, and seawater. The control of NSAIDs has led to the advent of the novel materials for treatment techniques. Herein, we review the occurrence, impact and toxicity of NSAIDs against aquatic microorganisms, plants and humans. Typical NSAIDs, e.g., ibuprofen, ketoprofen, diclofenac, naproxen and aspirin were detected at high concentrations in wastewater up to 2,747,000 ng L-1. NSAIDs in water could cause genotoxicity, endocrine disruption, locomotive disorders, body deformations, organs damage, and photosynthetic corruption. Considering treatment methods, among adsorbents for removal of NSAIDs from water, metal-organic frameworks (10.7-638 mg g-1) and advanced porous carbons (7.4-400 mg g-1) were the most robust. Therefore, these carbon-based adsorbents showed promise in efficiency for the treatment of NSAIDs.

Adsorption Performance of Magnetic Covalent Organic Framework Composites for Bisphenol A and Ibuprofen

As typical environmental endocrine disruptors and nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drugs, bisphenol A and ibuprofen in water supplies can cause great harm to the ecological environment and human health. In this study, magnetic covalent organic framework composites Fe₃O₄@COF-300 were synthesized by the hydrothermal method and used to remove bisphenol A and ibuprofen from water. Fe₃O₄@COF-300 could be rapidly separated from the matrix by external magnetic fields, and could selectively adsorb bisphenol A and ibuprofen in the presence of coexisting compounds such as phenol, Congo red, and amino black 10B. The removal efficiency of ibuprofen was 96.12-98.52% at pH in the range of 2-4 and that of bisphenol A was 92.18-95.62% at pH in the range of 2-10. The adsorption of bisphenol A and ibuprofen followed a pseudo-second-order kinetic and Langmuir model, and was a spontaneous endothermic process with the maximum adsorption amounts of 173.31 and 303.03 mg∙g^-1, respectively. The material presented favorable stability and reusability, and the removal efficiency of bisphenol A and ibuprofen after 5 cycles was still over 92.15% and 89.29%, respectively. Therefore, the prepared composite Fe₃O₄@COF-300 exhibited good performance in the adsorption of bisphenol A and ibuprofen in water.

Efficient Removal of Tetracycline and Bisphenol A from Water with a New Hybrid Clay/TiO2 Composite

New TiO₂ hybrid composites were prepared from kaolin clay, predried and carbonized biomass, and titanium tetraisopropoxide and explored for tetracycline (TET) and bisphenol A (BPA) removal from water. Overall, the removal rate is 84% for TET and 51% for BPA. The maximum adsorption capacities (q_m) are 30 and 23 mg/g for TET and BPA, respectively. These capacities are far greater than those obtained for unmodified TiO₂. Increasing the ionic strength of the solution does not change the adsorption capacity of the adsorbent. pH changes only slightly change BPA adsorption, while a pH > 7 significantly reduces the adsorption of TET on the material. The Brouers-Sotolongo fractal model best describes the kinetic data for both TET and BPA adsorption, predicting that the adsorption process occurs via a complex mechanism involving various forces of attraction. Temkin and Freundlich isotherms, which best fit the equilibrium adsorption data for TET and BPA, respectively, suggest that adsorption sites are heterogeneous in nature. Overall, the composite materials are much more effective for TET removal from aqueous solution than for BPA. This phenomenon is assigned to a difference in the TET/adsorbent interactions vs the BPA/adsorbent interactions: the decisive factor appears to be favorable electrostatic interactions for TET yielding a more effective TET removal.

Using circular economy principles in the optimisation of sludge-based activated carbon production for the removal of perfluoroalkyl substances

Massive sewage sludge (SS) production from municipal wastewater treatment plants and the presence of numerous pollutant types render the process of SS treatment and disposal costly and complex. Here, resource recovery from SS was maximised via the optimisation of sludge-based activated carbon (SBAC) production for the removal of poly- and perfluoroalkyl substances (PFASs), while considering economic factors and minimising environmental impacts. SBAC production optimisation was realised under different operating conditions (different ZnCl₂ impregnation ratios and different pyrolysis activation temperatures and durations). The sorption capacity of the optimised SBAC with respect to the removal of nine commonly detected PFASs, with environmentally relevant concentrations (∽50 μg/L), from simulated wastewater was evaluated. Economic analysis and life-cycle assessment (LCA) were also performed to determine the feasibility of the process and its potential role in the circular economy. Batch adsorption tests confirmed the high efficiency of the optimised SBACs for PFAS removal (93-100 %), highlighting the possibility of converting SS to SBAC. Economically speaking, the optimised SBAC at 1.5 M ZnCl₂, 500 °C, and 0.75 h reduced total production cost by 49 %. Further, the cost could be reduced to as little as 1087 US $/metric-ton compared with that corresponding to the original conditions (2.5 M ZnCl₂, 500 °C, 2 h; 2144 US $/metric-ton). LCA results also showed that freshwater ecotoxicity, marine ecotoxicity, and human non-carcinogenic toxicity were the most affected environmental impact indicators, showing a 49 % decrease when ZnCl₂ impregnation ratio was reduced from 2.5 to 1.5 M. These findings highlighted the optimal conditions for the production of SBAC with high sorption capacity at a reduced cost and with reduced environmental impacts. Thus, they can serve as valuable tools for decision making regarding the selection of the most sustainable and economically feasible process for PFAS removal.

Insight into the adsorptive removal of ibuprofen using porous carbonaceous materials: A review

Over the last decade, the removal of pharmaceuticals from aquatic bodies has garnered substantial attention from the scientific community. Ibuprofen (IBP), a non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drug, is released into the environment in pharmaceutical waste as well as medical, hospital, and household effluents. Adsorption technology is a highly efficient approach to reduce the IBP in the aquatic environment, particularly at low IBP concentrations. Due to the exceptional surface properties of carbonaceous materials, they are considered ideal adsorbents for the IBP removal of, with high binding capacity. Given the importance of the topic, the adsorptive removal of IBP from effluent using various carbonaceous adsorbents, including activated carbon, biochar, graphene-based materials, and carbon nanostructures, has been compiled and critically reviewed. Furthermore, the adsorption behavior, binding mechanisms, the most effective parameters, thermodynamics, and regeneration methods as well as the cost analysis were comprehensively reviewed for modified and unmodified carbonaceous adsorbents. The compiled studies on the IBP adsorption shows that the IBP uptake of some carbon-based adsorbents is significantly than that of commercial activated carbons. In the future, much attention is needed for practical utilization and upscaling of the research findings to aid the management and sustainability of water resource.

Application of fluorescence spectra and molecular weight analysis in the identification of algal organic matter-based disinfection by-product precursors

Algal organic matter (AOM) is considered to be threatening for the consumption of disinfectants and the formation of disinfection by-products (DBPs) during the disinfection process. Incompatible parameters in the conventional pretreatment of algal-laden water will lead to counterproductive results, such as AOM release. Therefore, the generation of AOM and its conversion to DBPs during pretreatment should be observed. The characteristics of DBPs from extracellular organic matter (EOM) and intracellular organic matter (IOM) were epitomized and simulation experiments were conducted in deionized (DI) water and source water under pretreatment conditions. Differences in DBP formation between the different backgrounds during chlorination and powdered activated carbon (PAC) treatment were investigated. Instead of monotonous excitation-emission matrix (EEM) spectra, molecular weight (MW) fractionation was simultaneously applied to elucidate the mechanisms of chlorination and PAC adsorption on AOM-based DBPs. The fluorescence regional integration (FRI) EEM results showed a clear correlation between the fluorescent properties and MW distribution of AOM. A decreasing trend was observed after a rapid increase in fluorescence intensity during the chlorination and PAC treatment of water samples in the simulation experiments in deionized (DI) water and source water. The DBP formation potential (FP) in the source water was consistent with the change in AOM during chlorination and PAC adsorption. In addition, EEM showed decent predictability of AOM-based trihalomethanes (THM) FPs (R² = 0.77-0.99) invoking a combination with MW fractionation. Macromolecular protein compounds were highly correlated with the formation of dichloroacetonitrile (DCAN) (R² = 0.89-0.98). These post-mortems results imply that EEM spectra are a useful tool for identifying AOM-based precursors to reveal the accurate environmental fate and risk assessments of AOM.

Phosphoric acid-activated biochar derived from sunflower seed husk: Selective antibiotic adsorption behavior and mechanism

In recent years, the unnecessary overuse of antibiotics has increased globally, resulting in antibiotic contamination of water, which has become a significant environmental concern. This study aims to examine the adsorption behavior of antibiotics (Tetracycline TC, Ciprofloxacin CIP, Ibuprofen IBP, and Sulfamethoxazole SMX) onto H₃PO₄-activated sunflower seed husk biochar (PSF). The results demonstrated that H₃PO₄ could enhance the specific surface area (378.8 m²/g) and create a mesoporous structure of biochar. The adsorption mechanism was investigated using kinetic models, isotherms, and thermodynamics. The maximum adsorption capacities (q_max) of TC, CIP, SMX, and IBP are 429.3, 361.6, 251.3, and 251.1 mg g^-1, respectively. The adsorption mechanism of antibiotics on PSF was governed by complex mechanisms, including chemisorption, external diffusion, and intraparticle diffusion. This research provides an environmentally friendly method for utilizing one of the agricultural wastes for the removal of a variety of antibiotics from the aquatic environment.

Advancements in Clay Materials for Trace Level Determination and Remediation of Phenols from Wastewater: A Review

The wide spread of phenols and their toxicity in the environment pose a severe threat to the existence and sustainability of living organisms. Rapid detection of these pollutants in wastewaters has attracted the attention of researchers from various fields of environmental science and engineering. Discoveries regarding materials and method developments are deemed necessary for the effective detection and remediation of wastewater. Although various advanced materials such as organic and inorganic materials have been developed, secondary pollution due to material leaching has become a major concern. Therefore, a natural-based material is preferable. Clay is one of the potential natural-based sorbents for the detection and remediation of phenols. It has a high porosity and polarity, good mechanical strength, moisture resistance, chemical and thermal stability, and cation exchange capacity, which will benefit the detection and adsorptive removal of phenols. Several attempts have been made to improve the capabilities of natural clay as sorbent. This manuscript will discuss the potential of clays as sorbents for the remediation of phenols. The activation, modification, and application of clays have been discussed. The achievements, challenges, and concluding remarks were provided.

Effective Removal of Sulfonamides Using Recyclable MXene-Decorated Bismuth Ferrite Nanocomposites Prepared via Hydrothermal Method

Developing a simple and efficient method for removing organic micropollutants from aqueous systems is crucial. The present study describes the preparation and application, for the first time, of novel MXene-decorated bismuth ferrite nanocomposites (BiFeO₃/MXene) for the removal of six sulfonamides including sulfadiazine (SDZ), sulfathiazole (STZ), sulfamerazine (SMZ), sulfamethazine (SMTZ), sulfamethoxazole (SMXZ) and sulfisoxazole (SXZ). The properties of BiFeO₃/MXene are enhanced by the presence of BiFeO₃ nanoparticles, which provide a large surface area to facilitate the removal of sulfonamides. More importantly, BiFeO₃/MXene composites demonstrated remarkable sulfonamide adsorption capabilities compared to pristine MXene, which is due to the synergistic effect between BiFeO₃ and MXene. The kinetics and isotherm models of sulfonamide adsorption on BiFeO₃/MXene are consistent with a pseudo-second-order kinetics and Langmuir model. BiFeO₃/MXene had appreciable reusability after five adsorption-desorption cycles. Furthermore, BiFeO₃/MXene is stable and retains its original properties upon desorption. The present work provides an effective method for eliminating sulfonamides from water by exploiting the excellent texture properties of BiFeO₃/MXene.

Characterization of ibuprofen removal by calcined spherical hydrochar through adsorption experiments, molecular modeling, and artificial neural network predictions

Ibuprofen (IPF) is one of the most prescribed nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drugs in recent times, but it is not readily removed in conventional wastewater treatments. Here, we investigate the adsorption characteristics of IPF onto calcined spherical hydrochar (CSH), which was synthesized through hydrothermal carbonization of sucrose followed by calcination. The adsorption experiments show that the equilibration time for IPF was 360 min, and a pseudo-second-order model was best fitted to the kinetic data. The isotherm data were best described by the Liu model with a theoretical maximum adsorption capacity of 95.6 mg/g. The thermodynamic data indicate the endothermic nature of the adsorption at 10-40 °C. The CSH was favorably regenerated and reused using methanol. In pH experiments, the IPF adsorption capacity declined gradually as pH rose from 2 to 8, dropped rapidly at pH 10, and became negligible at pH 12. The IPF adsorption to the CSH could occur through various adsorption mechanisms. Hydrogen-bond formation, π-π interactions, n-π* interactions, and electrostatic repulsion were explored and visualized with molecular modeling using CHEM3D. The Raman, FTIR, and XPS spectra suggest that π-π interactions could take place between the CSH and IPF. Considering the pK_a value of IPF (4.91) and pH_iep of the CSH (3.21), electrostatic repulsion between the negatively-charged CSH and anionic IPF could play a negative role in the adsorption. A pore-filling mechanism could contribute to the adsorption in view of the molecular size of IPF (9.43 Å × 7.75 Å × 6.23 Å) and the average pore diameter of the CSH (2.27 nm). In addition, hydrophobic interactions could be involved in the adsorption. Multi-factor adsorption experiments were executed with pH, temperature, CSH dosage, and initial IPF concentrations as input variables and IPF removal rate as an output variable, and an artificial neural network (ANN) model with a topology of 4:9:11:1 was developed to sufficiently describe the adsorption data (R > 0.99). Further analyses with additional experimental data confirm that the ANN model possessed good predictability for multi-factor adsorption.

A review of the adsorption method for norfloxacin reduction from aqueous media

Norfloxacin (NRFX) is one of a class of antibiotics known as broad-spectrum fluoroquinolone antibiotic that is frequently used to treat infectious disorders in both animals and humans. NRFX is considered an emergent pharmaceutical contaminate. This review's objective is to evaluate empirical data on NRFX's removal from aqueous medium. The environmental danger of NRFX in the aquatic environment was validated by an initial ecotoxicological study. Graphene oxide/Metal Organic Framework (MOF) based composite, followed by Magnesium oxide/Chitosan/Graphene oxide composite gave the highest NRFX adsorption capacities (Qmax) of 1114.8 and 1000 mg/g, respectively. The main adsorption mechanisms for NRFX uptake include electrostatic interactions, H-bonds, π-π interactions, electron donor-acceptor interactions, hydrophobic interactions, and pore diffusion. The adsorptive uptake of NRFX were most suitably described by Langmuir isotherm and pseudo-second order implying adsorbate-to-adsorbent electron transfer on a monolayer surface. The thermodynamics of NRFX uptake is heavily dependent on the makeup of the adsorbent, and the selection of the eluent for desorption from the solid phase is equally important. There were detected knowledge gaps in column studies and adsorbent disposal method. There's great interest in scale-up and industrial applications of research results that will aid in management of water resources for sustainability.

Purification of aquaculture effluent using Picralima nitida seeds

Aquaculture effluent treatment is essential to eliminate the undesirable characteristics of water to ensure cleaner production and environmental sustainability. In an effort to develop green coagulant without compromising cost, this research investigated the feasibility of aquaculture effluent (AQEF) pollutant removal using Picralima nitida seeds extract (PNSC) and its bio-coagulation/adsorption kinetic characteristics with the substrate in water. The coagulative decrease was observed in terms of TD (turbidity), TSS (total suspended solids), COD (chemical oxygen demand), BOD (biochemical oxygen demand), and COLR (color) from AQEF. The active coagulant was extracted from the seeds and analyzed for its spectral and morphological characteristics through FTIR and SEM. The influence of PNSC dosage (0.10-0.50 g L^-1), pH (2-10), settling time (0-60 min), and temperature (303-323 K) on the removal of contaminants were surveyed. The process kinetics of coagulation-flocculation were also explored. Maximal TD reduction of 90.35%, COD (82.11%), BOD (82.38%); TSS (88.84%), and COLR (65.77%) at 0.2 g PNSC L^-1, pH 4, and 303 K was achieved. Analysis of variance (ANOVA) tests proved that pH, temperature, and settling time had a significant effect on pollutant removal. Results fitted Von Smoluchowski's perikinetics theory at the optimum conditions, which gave R² > 0.900. At perikinetics circumstances, the K_b (reaction rate) and [Formula: see text] (half-life) correspond to 0.0635 Lg^-1 min^-1 and 1.9 min. More so, sorption results fitted the Lagergren over the Ho model. Additionally, the net cost of using PNSC to handle 1 L of AQEF (including electricity, material, and labor costs) was evaluated to be €4.81. Overall, the PNSC appears reliable and useful in pretreating AQEF for improved biodegradability and superior effluent quality.

Easy and Low-Cost Method for Synthesis of Carbon–Silica Composite from Vinasse and Study of Ibuprofen Removal

Vinasse was successfully utilized to synthesize carbon–silica composite with a low-cost silica source available in Thailand (sodium silicate, Na2SiO3) and most commonly used source, tetraethyl orthosilicate (TEOS). The composites were prepared by a simple one-step sol–gel process by varying the vinasse (as carbon source) to silica source (Na2SiO3 or TEOS) weight ratio. The resulting composites were characterized by N2 adsorption, moisture and ash contents, pH, pHpzc, bulk density, Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR), thermogravimetric analysis (TGA) and scanning electron microscopy-energy dispersive X-ray analysis (SEM-EDX). The composites had highest surface area of 313 and 456 m2/g, with average mesopore diameters of 5.00 and 2.62 nm when using Na2SiO3 and TEOS as the silica sources, respectively. The adsorption of a non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drug, ibuprofen, was investigated. The contact time to reach equilibrium was 60 min for both composites. The adsorption kinetics were fitted by a pseudo-second-order model with the correlation coefficient R2 > 0.997. The adsorption isotherms were well described by the Langmuir model (R2 > 0.992), which indicates monolayer adsorption. The maximal adsorption capacities of the Na2SiO3- and TEOS-based composites were as high as 406 and 418 mg/g at pH 2, respectively. The research results indicate that vinasse and a low-cost silica source (Na2SiO3) show great potential to synthesize adsorbents through a simple method with high efficiency.

Catalytic Ozonation of Ibuprofen in Aqueous Media over Polyaniline-Derived Nitrogen Containing Carbon Nanostructures

Catalytic ozonation is an important water treatment method among advanced oxidation processes (AOPs). Since the first development, catalytic ozonation has been consistently improved in terms of catalysts used and the optimization of operational parameters. The aim of this work is to compare the catalytic activity of polyaniline (PANI) and thermally treated polyaniline (PANI 900) in the catalytic ozonation of ibuprofen solutions at different pH values (4, 7, and 10). Catalysts were thoroughly characterized through multiple techniques (SEM, Raman spectroscopy, XPS, pHPZC, and so on), while the oxidation process of ibuprofen solutions (100 mgL^-1) was assessed by several analytical methods (HPLC, UV254, TOC, COD, and BOD5). The experimental data demonstrate a significant improvement in ibuprofen removal in the presence of prepared solids (20 min for PANI 900 at pH10) compared with non-catalytic processes (56 min at pH 10). Moreover, the influence of solution pH was emphasized, showing that, in the basic region, the removal rate of organic substrate is higher than in acidic or neutral range. Ozone consumption mgO₃/mg ibuprofen was considerably reduced for catalytic processes (17.55-PANI, 11.18-PANI 900) compared with the absence of catalysts (29.64). Hence, beside the ibuprofen degradation, the catalysts used are very active in the mineralization of organic substrate and/or formation of biodegradable compounds. The best removal rate of target pollutants and oxidation by-products was achieved by PANI 900, although raw polyaniline also presents important activity in the oxidation process. Therefore, it can be stated that polyaniline-based catalysts are effective in the oxidation processes.

Shrimp waste-derived porous carbon adsorbent: Performance, mechanism, and application of machine learning

Aquaculture generates significant amount of processing wastes (more than 500 million pounds annually in the United States), the bulk of which ends up in the environment or is used in animal feed. Proper utilization of shrimp waste can increase their economic value and divert them from landfills. In this study, shrimp waste was converted to a porous carbon (named SPC) via direct pyrolysis and activation. SPC was characterized, and its performance for adsorbing ciprofloxacin from simulated water, natural waters, and wastewater was benchmarked against a commercial powdered activated carbon (PAC). The surface area of SPC (2262 m²/g) exceeded that of PAC (984 m²/g) due to abundance of micropores and mesopores. The adsorption of ciprofloxacin by SPC was thermodynamically spontaneous (ΔG = -19 kJ/mol) and fast (k₁ = 1.05/min) at 25 °C. The capacity of SPC for ciprofloxacin (442 mg/g) was higher than that of PAC (181 mg/g). SPC also efficiently and simultaneously removed low concentrations (200 µg/L) of ciprofloxacin, long-chain per- and polyfluoroalkyl substances (PFAS), and Cu ions from water. An artificial neural network function was derived to predict ciprofloxacin adsorption and identify the relative contribution of each input parameter. This study demonstrates a sustainable and commercially viable pathway to reuse shrimp processing wastes.

Membranes for the life sciences and their future roles in medicine

Since the global outbreak of COVID-19, membrane technology for clinical treatments, including extracorporeal membrane oxygenation (ECMO) and protective masks and clothing, has attracted intense research attention for its irreplaceable abilities. Membrane research and applications are now playing an increasingly important role in various fields of life science. In addition to intrinsic properties such as size sieving, dissolution and diffusion, membranes are often endowed with additional functions as cell scaffolds, catalysts or sensors to satisfy the specific requirements of different clinical applications. In this review, we will introduce and discuss state-of-the-art membranes and their respective functions in four typical areas of life science: artificial organs, tissue engineering, in vitro blood diagnosis and medical support. Emphasis will be given to the description of certain specific functions required of membranes in each field to provide guidance for the selection and fabrication of the membrane material. The advantages and disadvantages of these membranes have been compared to indicate further development directions for different clinical applications. Finally, we propose challenges and outlooks for future development.

Adsorption of persistent organic pollutants (POPs) from the aqueous environment by nano-adsorbents: A review

The intensification of urbanisation and industrial activities significantly exacerbates the distribution of toxic contaminations into the aqueous environment. Persistent organic pollutants (POPs) have received considerable attention in the past few decades because of their persistence, long-distance migration, potential bioaccumulation, latent toxicity for humans and wildlife. There is no doubt that POPs cause serious effects on the global ecosystem. Therefore, it is necessary to develop a simple, safe and sustainable approach to remove POPs from water bodies. Among other conventional techniques, the adsorption process has proven to be a more effective method for eliminating POPs and to a larger extent meet discharge regulations. Nanomaterials can effectively adsorb POPs from aqueous solutions. For most POPs, a >70% adsorptive removal efficiency was achieved. The major mechanisms for POPS uptake by nano-adsorbents includes electrostatic interaction, hydrophobic (van der Waals, π-π and electron donor-acceptor) interaction and hydrogen bonding. Nano-adsorbent can sustain a >90% POPs adsorptive removal for about 3 cycles and reuseable for up to 10 cycles. Challenges around adsorbent ecotoxicity and safe disposal were also discussed. The present review evaluated recent research outcomes on nanomaterials that are employed to remove POPs in water systems.

Adsorption of p-benzoquinone at low concentrations from aqueous media using biosolid-based activated carbon

The toxic oxidation intermediate p-benzoquinone exists in aqueous environments at dilute concentrations above the fish-toxicity limit of 0.045 mg/L, affecting aquatic life. The reduction of this compound to the concentrations required to achieve safe discharge limits is challenging. In this study, the adsorptive removal of p-benzoquinone by a biosolid-based activated carbon (SBAC) was systematically investigated in batch experiments. The adsorption rate was rapid, and the bulk of p-benzoquinone adsorption occurred within 30 min. The maximum adsorption capacity of SBAC was estimated at 19.6 mg/g using the Langmuir isotherm model. Its adsorptivity was independent of temperature from 6 to 40 °C. The presence of 6 g/L of chloride and 500 mg/L of sulphate did not affect the removal of 1 mg/L p-benzoquinone, whereas 15 mg/L of humic acid media slightly decreased the p-benzoquinone removal from 87.0% to 83.2%. Diffusion, hydrophilic, and electrostatic interactions (i.e., dipole-dipole) govern the adsorption of p-benzoquinone and are influenced by the SBAC surface chemistry. Biosolid-based activated carbon can lower the residual p-benzoquinone to below the fish-toxicity limit of 0.045 mg/L within 1 h of sequential adsorption. Thus, biosolid-based activated carbon can effectively remove p-benzoquinone from aqueous environments; this is a waste-to-resource approach that addresses sustainability (waste disposal) and environmental protection (pollutant removal).

Effective removal of pharmaceutical contaminants ibuprofen and sulfamethoxazole from water by Corn starch nanoparticles: An ecotoxicological assessment

Pharmaceutical pollutants, a vital type of emerging contaminants, have attracted researchers to study their removal from water. In this research, Corn starch nanoparticles (CSNP) have been synthesized and characterized using various analytical techniques. The synthesized CSNP was used for the biosorption of two pharmaceutical drugs, ibuprofen (IBU) and sulfamethoxazole (SUL). The influence of various experimental conditions was optimized through batch study with the removal efficiency of 86.33 % (IBU) and 85.80 % (SUL) at pH 2 and 3, initial concentration of 10 mg/L, 0.01 g of CSNP dosage. The biosorption of IBU follows Temkin, and SUL follows Langmuir isotherm models. The toxicological assessment was performed using the seeds of Vigna mungo (VM) and Vigna radiata (VR) and zebrafish to evaluate the toxic effects of pollutants on these organisms. The LC₅₀ of IBU and SUL on zebrafish before the biosorption process was 209.50 mg/L and 338.84 mg/L. After biosorption, the LC₅₀ values increase to 1435.82 mg/L for IBU and 1317.04 mg/L for SUL. Thus, CSNP is an efficient biosorbent for removing the pharmaceutical pollutants to protect ecological systems.

Elimination of recalcitrant micropollutants by medium pressure UV-catalyzed bioelectrochemical advanced oxidation process: Influencing factors, transformation pathway and toxicity assessment

Bio-electro-Fenton (BEF) processes have been widely studied in recent years to remove recalcitrant micropollutants from wastewater. Though promising, it still faces the critical challenge of residual iron and iron sludge in the treated effluent. Thus, an innovative medium-pressure ultraviolet-catalyzed bio-electrochemical system (MUBEC), in which medium-pressure ultraviolet was employed as an alternative to iron for in-situ H₂O₂ activation, was developed for the removal of recalcitrant micropollutants. The influence of operating parameters, including initial catholyte pH, cathodic aeration rate, and input voltage, on the system performance, was explored. Results indicated that complete reduction of 10 mg L^-1 of model micro-pollutants ibuprofen (IBU) and carbamazepine (CBZ) was achieved at pH 3, with an aeration rate of 1 mL min^-1 and a voltage of 0.3 V, following pseudo-first-order kinetics. Moreover, potential transformation pathways and the associated intermediates during the degradation were deduced and detected, respectively. Thus, the MUBEC system shows the potential for the efficient and cost-effective degradation of recalcitrant micropollutants from wastewater.

Recent advances on botanical biosynthesis of nanoparticles for catalytic, water treatment and agricultural applications: A review

Green synthesis of nanoparticles using plant extracts minimizes the usage of toxic chemicals or energy. Here, we concentrate on the green synthesis of nanoparticles using natural compounds from plant extracts and their applications in catalysis, water treatment and agriculture. Polyphenols, flavonoid, rutin, quercetin, myricetin, kaempferol, coumarin, and gallic acid in the plant extracts engage in the reduction and stabilization of green nanoparticles. Ten types of nanoparticles involving Ag, Au, Cu, Pt, CuO, ZnO, MgO, TiO₂, Fe₃O₄, and ZrO₂ with emphasis on their formation mechanism are illuminated. We find that green nanoparticles serve as excellent, and recyclable catalysts for reduction of nitrophenols and synthesis of organic compounds with high yields of 83-100% and at least 5 recycles. Many emerging pollutants such as synthetic dyes, antibiotics, heavy metal and oils are effectively mitigated (90-100%) using green nanoparticles. In agriculture, green nanoparticles efficiently immobilize toxic compounds in soil. They are also sufficient nanopesticides to kill harmful larvae, and nanoinsecticides against dangerous vectors of pathogens. As potential nanofertilizers and nanoagrochemicals, green nanoparticles will open a revolution in green agriculture for sustainable development.

Monopersulfate in water treatment: Kinetics

The kinetics of monopersulfate based systems in the elimination of potential harmful contaminants has been assessed from a theoretical point of view. A detailed reaction mechanism sustained in the generation of radicals (mainly hydroxyl and sulfate), propagation and termination stages has been proposed. The system of first order differential equations derived has numerically been solved. The effect of main influencing parameters such as contaminant and peroxymonosulfate initial concentrations, intermediate generation, presence of organic matter, role played by anions, has been theoretically obtained. Discussion of simulated results has been accomplished by comparison with experimental data found in the literature. At the sight of the theoretical and empirical data, use of simplistic pseudo first order kinetics is discouraged. Despite considering a significant number of elemental reactions, modelling of the system reveals that a high fraction of them can be neglected due to their insignificant role played in the mechanism. The entire mechanism has been tested when peroxymonosulfate has been activated by UV radiation, although results can be fairly extrapolated to other activation strategies. Finally, a generic model capable of accounting for the effect of a diversity of parameters is proposed. No theoretical background is behind the model, however the generic model clearly improves the results obtained by simple first order kinetics.

A review on the adsorption mechanism of different organic contaminants by covalent organic framework (COF) from the aquatic environment

Recently, covalent organic frameworks (COFs) have gained significant attention as a promising material for the elimination of various organic pollutants due to their distinctive characteristics such as high surface area, adjustable porosity, high removal efficiency, and recyclability. The efficiency and selectivity of COFs depend on the decorated functional group and the pore size of the chemical structure. Hence, this review highlights the adsorption removal mechanism of different organic contaminants such as (pharmaceutical and personal care products, pesticides, dyes, and industrial by-products) by COFs from an aqueous solution. Spectroscopic techniques and theoretical calculation methods are introduced to understand the mechanism of the adsorption process. Also, a comparison between the performance of COFs and other adsorbents was discussed. Furthermore, future research directions and challenges encountered in the removal of organic contaminants by COFs are discussed.

Efficient removal of mefenamic acid and ibuprofen on organo-Vts with a quinoline-containing gemini surfactant: Adsorption studies and model calculations

To pursue the adsorptivity of versatile vermiculite (Na-Vt)-based adsorbent targeted at emerging pharmaceuticals (mefenamic acid and ibuprofen, corresponding to MEA and IBP, respectively), a quinoline-based gemini surfactant (DHQU) with multi-functional groups is applied as modifier on Na-Vt. Enhanced hydrophobicity, enlarged interlayer space and decreased surface area of DHQU-Vt are obtained, whose modifier availability (the mole ratio of modifier intercalated to added) reaches up to 84.18% as characterized by FT-IR, XRD, TG-DTG, EA and BET analysis. Efficient adsorption of MEA/IBP (123.71/240.69 mg/g) is achieved under an extremely low DHQU dosage (0.2 CEC lower than the usual saturated dosage of organo-Vts), with all the processes fitting satisfactorily with pseudo-second order and Freundlich isotherm models accompanied by an exothermic nature. Acid pickling testifies a stable and reliable reusability process of DHQU-Vt even after 3 cycles. Multiple interactions (i.e., partition process, XH-π interaction, π-π interaction, π-π stacking and electrostatic interaction) are revealed and compared from not only characterization results, but also simulation of frontier orbital analysis, the adsorption configuration and bonding analysis: (i) The greater molecular flexibility of the adsorbate, the greater intra particle diffusion effect. (ii) π-π stacking between isolated aromatic rings is stronger than that between parallelly connected aromatic rings. (iii) The strength of multiple active sites provided by quinoline (CH-π, NH-π and π-π interactions) are comparable but weaker than electrostatic interaction/intra particle diffusion.

Detection and remediation of chiral pharmaceuticals from wastewater: A review

Chiral organic pollutants including pharmaceuticals, pesticides, herbicides, flame retardants, and polycyclic musk cause significant risks to both the environment and human health. Chiral pharmaceuticals (CPs) are among the significant class of pseudo-persistent substances that have been observed in the concentration level from nanomolar to micromolar quantities and cause bad impacts on nontargeted species and direct or indirect human health issues due to water and foodborne contamination. The CPs may contain one or more chiral centers in their structural framework and thus enantiomers of CPs often possess different distribution, fate, bioaccumulation potential, and toxicity. The enantioselective chromatographic techniques have been extensively applied to detect drug enantiomers during the last few years. Bioremediation techniques offer unique characteristics above conventional remediation procedures as these could be cost-effective and accomplish total organic pollutant decomposition without causing collateral damage to the site material or native flora and fauna. This review describes the impacts of chiral pharmaceuticals on the environment; detection technologies (particularly liquid chromatography), and important remedial measures for safer disposal of such pollutants.

Development of a novel and efficient biochar produced from pepper stem for effective ibuprofen removal

A potential biochar from pepper stems (PS-biochar) was developed via a one-stage pyrolysis process of precursor at 700 °C and employed to adsorb ibuprofen (IBP) in water media. Results showed that PS-biochar was a carbonaceous mesoporous adsorbent with well-developed porosity (S_BET = 727.5 m²/g and V_Total = 0.36 cm³/g) and rich surface functional groups. Mechanism of IBP adsorption consisted mainly of π- π interaction, pore filling, and H-bonding. The Langmuir monolayer capacity (569.6 mg/g) was very high compared to values reported in similar studies. The successful PS-biochar regeneration after four cycles in the batch system confirmed the high performance of the NaOH (0.1 M) as a desorbing agent. Therefore, the prepared biochar can be considered as a cost-effective and high-performance material for water decontamination.

Effect of composting and amendment with biochar and woodchips on the fate and leachability of pharmaceuticals in biosolids destined for land application

Land application of biosolids can improve soil fertility and enhance crop production. However, the occurrence and persistence of pharmaceutical compounds in the biosolids may result in leaching of these contaminants to surface water and groundwater, causing environmental contamination. This study evaluated the effectiveness of two organic amendments [biochar (BC) and woodchips (WC)] for reducing the concentration and leachability (mobility) of four pharmaceuticals in biosolids derived from wastewater treatment plants in southern Ontario, Canada. The effect of 360-d composting on fate and leachabilities of target pharmaceuticals in biosolid mixtures was also investigated. Composting decreased total and leachable concentrations of pharmaceuticals in unamended and BC- and WC-amended biosolids to various degrees, from 10% up to 99% depending on the compound. Blending BC or WC into the biosolids greatly increased the removal rates of the target pharmaceuticals, while simultaneously decreasing their half-lives (t_0.5), compared to unamended biosolids. The t_0.5 of contaminants in this study followed the order: carbamazepine (304-3053 d) > gemfibrozil (42.3-92.4 d) > naproxen (15.3-104 d) > ibuprofen (12.5-19.0 d). Amendment with BC and(or) WC significantly reduced the leachability of carbamazepine, ibuprofen, and gemfibrozil to variable extents, but significantly enhanced the leachability of naproxen, compared to unamended biosolids (P < 0.05). Biochar and WC exhibited different (positive or negative) effects on the leachability of individual pharmaceuticals. Significantly lower concentrations of total and(or) leachable (mobile) pharmaceuticals were observed in amended biosolids than unamended biosolids (P < 0.05). Biochar and WC are effective amendments that can reduce the environmental impact of biosolid land applications with respect to pharmaceutical contamination.

Treatment technologies for bakers' yeast production wastewater

Researchers in recent years have utilized a broad spectrum of treatment technologies in treating bakers' yeast production wastewater. This paper aims to review the treatment technologies for the wastewater, compare the process technologies, discuss recent innovations, and propose future perspectives in the research area. The review observed that nanofiltration was the most effective membrane process for the treatment of the effluent (at >95% pollutant rejection). Other separation processes like adsorption and distillation had technical challenges of desorption, a poor fit for high pollutant load and cost limitations. Chemical treatment processes have varying levels of success but they are expensive and produce toxic sludge. Sludge production would be a hurdle when product recovery and reuse are targeted. It is difficult to make an outright choice of the best process for treating the effluent because each has its merits and demerits and an appropriate choice can be made when all factors are duly considered. The process intensification of the industrial-scale production of the bakers' yeast process will be a very direct approach, where the process optimisation, zero effluent discharge, and enhanced recovery of value-added product from the waste streams are important approaches that need to be taken into account.

Sewage sludge-derived biochar for the adsorptive removal of wastewater pollutants: A critical review

The production of biochar from sewage sludge pyrolysis is a promising approach to transform the waste resultant from wastewater treatment plants (WWTPs) to a potential adsorbent. The current review provides an up-to-date review regarding important aspects of sewage sludge pyrolysis, highlighting the process that results major solid fraction (biochar), as high-value product. Further, the physio-chemical characteristics of sewage-sludge derived biochar such as the elemental composition, specific surface area, pore size and volume, the functional groups, surface morphology and heavy metal content are discussed. Recent progress on adsorption of metals, emerging pollutants, dyes, nutrients and oil are discussed and the results are examined. The sewage sludge-derived biochar is a promising material that can make significant contributions on pollutants removal from water by adsorption and additional benefit of the management of huge volume of sewage. Considering all these aspects, this field of research still needs more attention from the researchers in the direction of the technological features and sustainability aspects.

Removal of anti-inflammatory drugs using activated carbon from agro-industrial origin: current advances in kinetics, isotherms, and thermodynamic studies

Nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAIDs) are highly consumed around the world and consequently found as emerging pollutants in water; they are found in concentrations up to µg L−1 making their removal a priority. In this matter, adsorption is an efficient alternative for drug removal, so using activated carbon (AC) as an adsorbent is a highly explored subject. The current interest is to obtain AC from waste, for example, those of agro-industrial origin, reducing this way the overall costs of the process. Although information regarding the use of AC from agro-industrial origin in the removal of NSAIDs is limited, an exclusive compilation is required to understand the state of the art to date. This work aims to update information related to the adsorption of ibuprofen, diclofenac, and naproxen on agro-industrial AC, and it is focused on the period 2016–2021. It highlights the characteristics of agro-industrial AC responsible for efficient adsorption. Recent adsorption studies, including kinetics, isotherms, and thermodynamics, are analyzed and compared. Progress on removing NSAIDs from real wastewater is also presented and finally proposed adsorption mechanisms and costs related to these removal processes.
