Abstract
BACKGROUND This cross-sectional study aimed to examine the prevalence and correlates of social jetlag (SJL) in Chinese adolescents, as well as to test the relationships between SJL and mental health problems. METHODS A total of 106979 students (Mage = 13.0 ± 1.8 years; Nmale = 58296 [54.5 %]) from Shenzhen, China completed an online survey from May 24th to June 5th, 2022. Information on sociodemographics, lifestyles, sleep characteristics, anxiety symptoms, and depressive symptoms was collected by a self-administered questionnaire. Multivariate and binary logistic regression were adopted for data analysis. RESULTS 17.8 % of participants experienced SJL ≥ 2 h. To adjust the accumulated sleep debt, sleep-corrected SJL (SJLsc) was calculated and 8.3 % of individuals self-reported SJLsc ≥ 2 h. Both SJL and SJLsc show an increasing trend with age. Risk factors of SJL included females, poor parental marital status, being overweight, physically inactive, smoking, drinking, and having a late chronotype. Moreover, males, having siblings, boarding at school, short sleep duration, experiencing insomnia, and frequent nightmares were significantly associated with an increased risk of SJLsc. After adjusting for all covariates, adolescents with SJLsc ≥ 2 h were more likely to have anxiety symptoms (OR: 1.35, 95 % CI: 1.24-1.48) and depressive symptoms (OR: 1.35, 95 % CI: 1.25-1.46) than those with SJLsc < 1 h. CONCLUSIONS SJL is common among Chinese school-age adolescents. This study is valuable for the development of prevention and intervention strategies for SJL in adolescents at the population level. Additionally, the strong links between SJLsc and emotional problems underscore the critical significance of addressing SJL as a key aspect of adolescent well-being.

Abstract
Social jetlag, the weekly variation in sleep timing, is proposed to contribute to increased obesity risk, potentially because of the misalignment of behavioral cycles relative to the endogenous circadian timing system. This systematic review and meta-analysis aim to determine the association between social jetlag and adiposity-related measures using observational studies. We reviewed 477 references, of which 43 studies met inclusion criteria with a total sample size of 231,648. There was a positive association between social jetlag and body mass index (correlation coefficient [r]: 0.12; 95%CI, 0.07, 0.17; P < 0.001; I2 = 94.99%), fat mass (r: 0.10; 95%CI, 0.05, 0.15; P < 0.001; I2 = 0.00%), fat mass index (fat mass divided by height in meter squared, β: 0.14 kg/m2 ; 95%CI, 0.05, 0.23; P < 0.001; I2 = 56.50%), percent of body fat (r: 0.37; 95%CI, 0.33, 0.41; P < 0.001; I2 = 96.17%), waist circumference (r: 0.15; 95%CI, 0.06, 0.24; P = 0.001; I2 = 90.83%), and the risk of having overweight/obesity (odds ratio: 1.20; 95%CI, 1.02, 1.140; P = 0.039; I2 = 98.25%). Social jetlag is positively and consistently associated with multiple obesity-related anthropometric measures. Further studies are needed to test causality, underlying mechanisms, and whether obesity interventions based on increasing regularity of the sleep/wake cycle can aid in the battle against the obesity pandemic.

Abstract
Sleep is an involuntary behaviour, biologically fundamental to survival and wellbeing. However, sleep is increasingly neglected, with significant health implications. Recent research has identified associations between sleep duration, quality, timing and risk of overweight/obesity in children and adults. The aim of this review was to systematically identify and examine research that investigates the relationships between multiple objective and subjective sleep outcomes and objective adiposity measures in adolescents. A systematic review of literature, published to December 2022, was conducted using ten bibliographic databases. Search terms included objective and subjective sleep/circadian rhythm outcomes, objective adiposity measurements, and adolescents aged 8-18 years. Eighty-nine studies were included in the final review. Sleep outcomes were synthesized into three sleep domains: pre-sleep, during sleep and post-sleep outcomes. In summary, pre-sleep outcomes (including poor sleep hygiene, later chronotype and increased variability and later sleep timings) and increased sleep disturbance are consistently significantly associated with increased obesity and adiposity in adolescents. The relationship between during-sleep outcomes (sleep quality and efficiency) with adiposity and obesity measures was mixed. These findings suggest that adapting an individual's schedule to best suit chronotype preference and improving sleep hygiene, including a consistent bedtime routine, could reduce adiposity and obesity in adolescents.

Abstract
Sleep and daytime movement behaviours occur co-dependently with each other within a finite 24 h day. Sleep parameters other than sleep duration, such as social jetlag and chronotype, have been linked to health problems and unhealthy behaviours among children and adolescents. Given the increasing number of studies examining sleep timing/chronotype and weight-related behaviours, including physical activity and sedentary behaviour, in the past decade, this systematic review and meta-analysis collated and evaluated the evidence on the relationships of social jetlag and chronotype with physical activity and sedentary behaviour among children and adolescents aged 3-17 years. Seven databases were searched on 16 March 2022, and 52 studies were identified as eligible for inclusion, 47 of which were suitable for the meta-analysis. A positive association was found between social jetlag and screen media use (r = 0.14, 95% CI: 0.04-0.24; I2 = 96%; p = 0.008). The morning chronotype was associated with a higher level of physical activity and a lower level of sedentary behaviour than the evening chronotype. No relationship was found between social jetlag and physical activity. The magnitude of heterogeneity among the included studies was high. Further experimental studies are urgently required to understand how circadian preference or misalignment affects activity behaviours. Interventions to promote an active lifestyle in young populations should consider their circadian preference, especially among individuals with the evening chronotype.

Abstract
STUDY OBJECTIVES This study employed longitudinal data collected repeatedly from individuals over the course of several years to examine the trajectories of social jetlag from ages 11 to 22 years and their associations with subsequent body mass index (BMI). Potential sex differences were also investigated. METHODS Data were obtained from two longitudinal studies conducted in Taiwan (N = 4287). Social jetlag was defined as ≥ 2 hours of absolute difference in sleep midpoint between weekdays and weekends. BMI was calculated using weight (kg)/height(m)2 and categorized as underweight (<18 kg/m2), normal weight (18 kg/m2 ≤ BMI < 24 kg/m2), overweight (24 kg/m2 ≤ BMI < 27 kg/m2), and obese (≥27 kg/m2). Group-based trajectory modeling and multinomial logistic regression were applied to investigate study objectives. RESULTS Four distinct trajectories of social jetlag throughout the adolescent years were identified, with corresponding proportions as follows: low-stable (42%), moderate-decreasing (19%), low-increasing (22%), and chronic (17%) trajectories. Among males, the risk of being underweight (aOR, 1.96; 95% CI: 1.35 to 2.84) or obese (aOR, 1.40; 95% CI: 1.02 to 1.92) was higher in individuals with a low-increasing trajectory than in those with a low-stable trajectory. Among females, those with a low-increasing (aOR, 1.61; 95% CI: 1.02 to 2.54) or chronic (aOR, 2.04; 95% CI: 1.27 to 3.25) trajectory were at a higher risk of being obese relative to those with a low-stable trajectory. CONCLUSIONS Addressing the development of increasing or chronic social jetlag during adolescence can help prevent abnormal BMI in young adulthood. Practitioners should consider sex differences in treatment or consultation.

Abstract
Introduction Adolescence is marked by physiological and social changes, such as puberty, increased responsibilities and earlier school start times. This often leads to insufficient sleep on school nights and the need to compensate for lost sleep on weekends, causing a misalignment between biological and social times, which has been termed social jetlag (SJL). SJL triggers stress responses and is associated with several negative health outcomes, including higher cardiometabolic risk in adults. In adolescence, however, SJL has only been consistently related to increases in adiposity but its association with other cardiometabolic indicators are unclear. Method In a sample of 278 healthy early adolescents (9-15 years of age; 168 girls) we investigated: 1) whether self-reported SJL is associated (using path analyses) with a cardiometabolic status latent factor obtained by testing the best fitting model via confirmatory factor analyses from an initial set of eight indicators [body mass index (BMI), waist/height ratio, triglyceride concentration, diastolic and systolic blood pressure, glycated hemoglobin, total cholesterol/high-density lipoprotein ratio (chol/HDL), and % body fat]; and 2) whether age and/or pubertal status influence the association between SJL and cardiometabolic status. Result We found that, for girls, higher SJL was associated with more adverse cardiometabolic latent scores (the shared variance of BMI, waist/height ratio, chol/HDL and systolic blood pressure, which had acceptable model fit indices). However, the role of age and pubertal status in this association was unclear for both sexes. Discussion SJL was associated with adverse cardiometabolic latent traits beyond increases in adiposity in this observational study in early female adolescents. Because disruptions of circadian rhythms are believed to lead to dysregulated energy homeostasis and not vice-versa, our findings highlight the need for sleep interventions in adolescence to help reduce the global burden of cardiometabolic ill health, especially in girls.

Abstract
To investigate the associations between social jetlag and depressive symptoms and further analyze the interaction of social jetlag and chronic diseases on depressive symptoms among adults. Data were derived from a cross-sectional survey. Information on social jetlag, depressive symptoms, demographic characteristics, lifestyles, and health situations were collected via a structured self-administered questionnaire. The multivariable logistic regression analyses and restricted cubic splines regression were performed to test the association between social jetlag and depressive symptoms. The multiplicative model was applied to analyze the interaction of social jetlag and chronic disease on depressive symptoms. A total of 5818 adults were included and the prevalence of social jetlag was 22.95%. After multivariable adjustment, adults who experienced more than 2 hours of social jetlag had a significantly greater risk of depressive symptoms (OR = 1.43,95%CI:1.00-2.05, P = 0.049). Compared with participants having<1 hour of social jetlag and no chronic disease, participants having chronic disease were more likely to report depressive symptoms(OR = 3.22,95%CI = 2.59-4.00, P < 0.001). Moreover, among those who have chronic disease, the greater the social jetlag they reported, the greater risk of depressive symptoms they have (OR = 3.81,95%CI = 2.77-5.33, P < 0.001; OR = 4.08,95%CI = 2.24-7.43, P < 0.001). Social jetlag was linearly associated the with risk of depressive symptoms, according to restricted cubic splines. This study shows that 22.95% adults experience more than 1 hour of social jetlag. Social jetlag was positively associated with an increased risk of depressive symptoms. Among those who have chronic disease, the greater the social jetlag they reported, the greater risk of depressive symptoms they have.

Abstract
PURPOSE This study aimed to use social jetlag to determine how smartphone overuse by adolescents before and after the COVID-19 pandemic might be associated with their circadian rhythm. METHODS We used 2017 and 2020 Korea Youth Risk Behavior web-based Survey data and conducted a survey analysis on 100,976 adolescents. The dependent variable was abnormal social jetlag. Based on the times recorded by the survey, we calculated the weekday midpoint and weekend sleep time. The main independent variable was smartphone usage time (<2h/day, 2-3.9 h/day, 4-5.9 h/day, and ≥ 6 h/day). Multiple logistic regression and relative excess risk due to interaction (RERI) were performed. RESULTS Abnormal social jetlag was most prevalent in male and female adolescents who used smartphones ≥ 6 h/day (adjusted odds ratio [AOR] = 2.60, 95 % confidence interval [CI] = 2.47-2.74). The longer the smartphone usage time, the higher the association with abnormal social jetlag. This association was more prominent in female adolescents. The additive interaction between longer smartphone usage time and post-COVID-19 year was statistically significant (total: RERI = 0.92, 95 % CI = 0.90-0.95; males: RERI = 0.83, 95 % CI = 0.80-0.87; females: RERI = 1.13, 95 % CI = 1.08-1.18). CONCLUSION Our results clearly indicated that increased smartphone usage time tended to result in greater social jetlag, an association that was more pronounced in female. Moreover, the COVID-19 pandemic significantly strengthened this relationship. Further research is needed regarding the proper use of smartphones to ensure good sleep-in adolescents after the COVID-19 pandemic.

Abstract
Sleep regularity is an essential part of the multidimensional sleep health framework. The phenomenon of irregular sleep patterns is widespread in contemporary lifestyles. This review synthesizes clinical evidence to summarize the measures of sleep regularity and discusses the role of different sleep regularity indicators in developing cardiometabolic diseases (coronary heart disease, hypertension, obesity, and diabetes). Existing literature has proposed several measurements to assess sleep regularity, mainly including the standard deviation (SD) of sleep duration and timing, sleep regularity index (SRI), interdaily stability (IS), and social jetlag (SJL). Evidence on associations between sleep variability and cardiometabolic diseases varies depending on the measure used to characterize variability in sleep. Current studies have identified a robust association between SRI and cardiometabolic diseases. In comparison, the association between other metrics of sleep regularity and cardiometabolic diseases was mixed. Meanwhile, the associations of sleep variability with cardiometabolic diseases differ across the population. SD of sleep characteristics or IS may be more consistently associated with HbA1c in patients with diabetes compared with the general population. The association between SJL and hypertension for patients with diabetes was more accordant than in the general population. Interestingly, the age-stratified association between SJL and metabolic factors was observed in the present studies. Furthermore, the relevant literature was reviewed to generalize the potential mechanisms through which irregular sleep increases cardiometabolic risk, including circadian dysfunction, inflammation, autonomic dysfunction, hypothalamic-pituitary-adrenal (HPA) axis disorder, and gut dysbiosis. Health-related practitioners should give more attention to the role of sleep regularity on human cardiometabolic in the future.

Abstract
OBJECTIVE To evaluate whether sleep duration, timing, and variability were associated with inflammatory cytokines in a cohort of Mexico City adolescents. METHODS The analytic sample comprised >500 adolescents who were part of an ongoing longitudinal study in Mexico City. At two time points during mid-to-late puberty (average age 14, n = 391) and late-to-post puberty (average age 16, n = 345), adolescents completed a follow-up visit that included 7-day wrist actigraphy and clinical assessment of plasma inflammatory cytokines (high-sensitivity C-reactive protein, Interleukin 1β, Interleukin 6, and Tumor Necrosis Factor ɑ). Sleep characteristics included weekday and weekend sleep duration and midpoint (median of bed and wake time), as well as sleep variability (SD of sleep duration across 7 days) and social jetlag (midpoint difference from weekdays to weekends). At each time point, multivariable linear regression models were run with log inflammatory levels as the outcome and categories of sleep characteristics as predictors, while adjusting for potential confounders (specific to each model). Analyses were run unstratified and sex-stratified. RESULTS In the mid-to-late pubertal visit, weekday sleep duration was inversely associated with natural log hs-CRP after adjustment (Q4 vs Q1: β = -0.41, 95% Confidence Interval (CI) -0.81 to -0.01) and later sleep midpoint was positively associated with log hs-CRP (Q4 vs Q1: β = 0.55, 95% CI 0.13 to 0.97). Sleep duration variability was associated with higher IL-1β among boys, while in girls social jetlag was associated with higher IL-1β and weekend sleep duration was inversely associated with IL-6. At the late-to-post pubertal visit, there were few associations except for a positive association between weekday sleep duration and hs-CRP among boys (β = 0.60, 95% CI 0.04 to 1.16) and a non-linear positive association between social jetlag and hs-CRP among girls (β = 0.80, 95% CI 0.22 to 1.37 comparing 2 to 3 h of social jetlag vs <1 h). CONCLUSION Later timing, shorter duration, and inconsistency of sleep were related to higher levels of inflammatory biomarkers, but associations were more evident at the mid-to-late pubertal visit than the late-to-post pubertal visit.

Abstract
OBJECTIVES The objective of this study was to examine the association between sociodemographic, behavioral, and environmental factors and adherence to sleep duration recommendations among 1165 U.S. Hispanic/Latinx children. METHODS In this cross-sectional study, the following parent-reported variables were examined as correlates of whether children met age-appropriate nightly sleep duration recommendations: caretaker and child demographics (eg, gender, age, poverty level), presence of TV in child's bedroom, child's daily screen time and bedtime. RESULTS Most (61.4%) children (mean age: 6.39 years, SD = 2.66) met sleep duration guidelines. Multivariable regression results revealed the odds of meeting recommendations were significantly higher among children 6-12 years old living above the poverty threshold (odds ratio [OR] = 1.57; 95% confidence interval [95%CI]: 1.08, 2.31) and those with a regular bedtime ("Some of the time:" OR = 2.05; 95%CI: 1.07, 3.92; "Most of the time:" OR = 3.19; 95%CI: 1.77, 5.74; "Always:" OR = 4.46; 95%CI: 2.43, 8.13). CONCLUSIONS Sleep health disparities must be addressed through culturally and contextually appropriate interventions that combine individual-level strategies with those that address social and environmental factors.

Abstract
INTRODUCTION In the past decade, investigations of the relationship between sleep duration and eating behaviours have been emerging; however, a formal synthesis of the literature focussed on adolescent populations has not yet been conducted. We conducted a scoping review of the literature examining the relationship between sleep duration and eating behaviours in adolescents. Gaps in the research and directions for future research were identified based on the findings. METHODS A systematic search was employed on four research databases: PubMed, PsycInfo, CINAHL and Scopus; relevant grey literature was also reviewed. Studies that reported on the relationship between sleep duration and eating behaviours among high school-aged adolescents were included in the review. Data were extracted, charted and synthesized into a narrative. Consistent with the purpose of a scoping review, the methodological quality of the studies was not appraised. Stakeholders were consulted to validate the findings and provide insight into the interpretation and identification of pressing gaps in the research that remain to be addressed. RESULTS In total, 61 studies published between 2006 and 2021 met the criteria for review. Existing research focussed heavily on examining sleep duration in relation to intake of food from certain food groups, beverages and processed foods, and relied on a population study design, cross-sectional analyses and self-report measures. CONCLUSION Future research is needed to understand the link between sleep duration and eating-related cognition, eating contexts and disordered eating behaviours in order to better understand how ensuring sufficient sleep among adolescents can be leveraged to support healthier eating practices and reduce diet-related risks.

Abstract
Background The role of sleep in childhood myopia has been a research focus; however, the existing evidence is conflicting on sleep duration and timing, and as yet, no studies involve sleep consistency and chronotype. This study is done to make multiple-perspective analyses on the associations between sleep variables and myopia. Methods A population-based cross-sectional study was conducted in Shanghai, China, which included 10,142 school-aged children (7–12 years old, 53.2% boys). The Chinese version of the Children's Sleep Habits Questionnaire (CSHQ) was used to assess sleep variables. Propensity score matching was adopted to balance the difference of covariates between nonmyopic and myopic groups. Logistic regression models were implemented to examine the associations between sleep variables and myopia. Results Sleep duration and timing, mainly during weekdays, were correlated with myopia in a dose-dependent pattern, in which longer sleep duration was associated with decreased risk of myopia (9-10 hours/day: odds ratio (OR) = 0.87; ≥10 hours/day: OR = 0.77; by comparison with <9 hours/day); later bedtime (9 pm to 9:30 pm: OR = 1.46; 9:30 pm to 10 pm: OR = 1.51; 10 pm and after: OR = 2.08; by comparison with before 9 pm) and later wake-up time (7 am and after: OR = 1.36; by comparison with before 6:30 am) increased the risk (all P < 0.05). Moreover, longer weekend catch-up sleep duration and intermediate and evening chronotype were positively correlated with myopia, while social jetlag was associated with a lower odds of myopia. All these findings were also similarly observed in the matching sample. Conclusions Multiple dimensions of sleep were involved in childhood myopia. In addition to sleep duration and timing, sleep consistency and chronotype were also strictly related to myopia. More studies are needed to enrich the current evidence, thus further clarifying the association between sleep and childhood myopia.

Abstract
Social jetlag, the discrepancy between social and biological timing, has been suggested to disturb metabolic functions. However, the relationship between social jetlag and obesity has been inconsistent in other studies. In this study we examined the association between social jetlag and obesity among day and shift workers. We invited 2508 day workers and 1383 shift workers from a hospital worker health cohort to participate in a 2018-2019 survey on their sleep behaviors. Shift-specific social jetlag was quantified using the Munich ChronoType Questionnaire, and body mass index was measured during annual physical examinations. The distributions of shift-specific social jetlag were illustrated, and logistic regression analysis was used to examine the association between social jetlag and obesity. We found that high level of social jetlag (odds ratio [OR] = 1.26, 95% confidence interval [CI] = 1.08-1.47) and positive social jetlag (OR = 2.25, 95% CI = 1.30-3.90) during evening shifts were associated with obesity after adjustment for age, sex, health behaviors, and sleep quality. During night shift periods, sleep time varied greatly on free days, but the participants slept at similar times, namely 16:00, on workdays. In conclusion, phase advance on workdays and high levels of social jetlag were associated with obesity. Sleep timing should therefore be recommended according to the relative phase of individuals' preferred sleep time and work time.

Abstract
Physiological function fluctuates across 24 h due to ongoing daily patterns of behaviors and environmental changes, including the sleep/wake, rest/activity, light/dark, and daily temperature cycles. The internal circadian system prepares the body for these anticipated behavioral and environmental changes, helping to orchestrate optimal cardiovascular and metabolic responses to these daily changes. In addition, circadian disruption, caused principally by exposure to artificial light at night (e.g., as occurs with night-shift work), increases the risk for both cardiovascular and metabolic morbidity and mortality. Regular exercise is a countermeasure against cardiovascular and metabolic risk, and recent findings suggest that the cardiovascular benefits on blood pressure and autonomic control are greater with evening exercise compared to morning exercise. Moreover, exercise can also reset the timing of the circadian system, which raises the possibility that appropriate timing of exercise could be used to counteract circadian disruption. This article introduces the overall functional relevance of the human circadian system and presents the evidence surrounding the concepts that the time of day that exercise is performed can modulate the cardiovascular and metabolic benefits. Further work is needed to establish exercise as a tool to appropriately reset the circadian system following circadian misalignment to preserve cardiovascular and metabolic health. © 2022 American Physiological Society. Abstract
This study aimed to investigate the associations between social jetlag (SJL), dietary behavior, physical activity, and weight status in Chinese youth. Data were derived from a cross-sectional survey in Wuhan, China in 2019. Information on SJL, the frequency of food and beverage consumption, physical activity, and BMI category were collected via a self-reported questionnaire. The Kruskal-Wallis test and ANOVA were conducted to determine differences in daily consumption frequency of food and beverage groups, BMI category, and physical activity among SJL groups. Logistic regressions and restricted cubic splines were performed to test the association between SJL and the incidence of overweight or obesity. A final sample of 3567 Chinese adolescents [mean (SD) age, 14.67 (1.72) years; 47.41% (1691) female] were included. Our findings demonstrated that adolescents with SJL may consume more unhealthy foods and fewer beneficial foods, while engaging in less moderate to vigorous physical activity (MVPA) and reporting higher BMIs. In addition, adolescents who experience more than 2 h of SJL had significant greater risk of overweight or obesity. Our findings on SJL of Chinese adolescents confirm the harmful effects of SJL and also provide insights into the etiology of obesity in Chinese adolescents.

Abstract
The aim of this study was to compare anthropometric measures of obesity and sleep qualities in individuals with/without social jetlag (SJL). In addition, it was aimed to compare the energy, macronutrient intake and diet qualities of individuals with/without SJL during school and non-school days. This study comprised 710 university students with mean age 21.58 ± 1.41 years. The presence of SJL was acknowledged if there was a difference of more than 1 hour between the middle of sleep time on school day and on non-school day. While the physical activity levels (PALs) of the individuals were determined with a 24-hour physical activity record, measurements such as waist circumference, neck circumference and body mass index were recorded for anthropometric measurements. Pittsburgh Sleep Quality Index was used to determine the sleep quality of the individuals. Energy, macronutrients intake, and diet quality were calculated from the 24-h dietary recall of the individuals, and recorded for the school days and non-school days. In this study, 76% of the individuals (n = 542) were determined as exposed to SJL. Although there was no significant difference in their PALs, individuals with SJL had a higher waist (p < .05) and neck (p < .05) circumference, as well as higher body mass index (p < .05). Individuals with SJL were found to have significantly poor sleep quality (OR:1.109, p < .031) and sleep latency (OR:1.130, p < .001) after adjustment for confounding factors. When compared to school days, in the individuals with SJL, energy (p < .001), fat (p < .001), saturated fatty acids (SFA) (p < .001), and mono unsaturated fatty acids (MUFA) (p < .001) were significantly increased; however, fiber intake (p < .001) was significantly reduced on non-school days. Although there was no significant difference in the diet quality scores between the groups on the school days, the diet quality of the individuals without SJL on non-school days was increased significantly (p < .05). In conclusion, SJL was associated with sleep loss, increased body mass index, and lowered diet quality in university students.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Social jetlag (SJL) occurs in adolescents due to misalignment of the biological and social clocks, so that most teens wake up earlier than their biological clocks on weekdays and delay bedtime and wake up time on weekends. This shift in sleep timing among adolescents is associated with an adverse endocrine and behavioral risk profile, in addition to increased food consumption and increased body mass index (BMI). OBJECTIVE The aim of this study was to determine the association between SJL, and the frequency of consumption of multiple food and beverage groups and BMI percentile in adolescents. DESIGN Publicly available data from the cross-sectional Family Life, Activity, Sun, Health, and Eating (FLASHE) study were analyzed. PARTICIPANTS Participants from the FLASHE study were recruited from all regions of the United States between April and October 2014. Among the 1,581 adolescents aged 12 through 17 years in the original study, 1,556 with complete sleep data were analyzed. MAIN OUTCOME MEASURES The difference between the frequency of dietary consumption according to the Dietary Screener Questionnaire and BMI percentile was assessed in adolescents grouped according to SJL, as follows: no SJL: less than 1-hour difference; mild SJL: 1- to 2-hour difference; and severe SJL: more than 2-hour difference. STATISTICAL ANALYSES PERFORMED Differences in the frequency of food consumption were analyzed using the Kruskal-Wallis test. Secondary outcomes were analyzed using logistic regression models. RESULTS Daily consumption frequency of sugar-sweetened beverages and fruits and vegetables differed among the 3 groups. Likewise, the BMI percentile differed among the 3 groups and was highest in the severe SJL group. Those in the severe SJL group had a 1.84-fold higher probability of having overweight or obesity (95% CI 1.83 to 1.84) than those in the no SJL group. CONCLUSIONS Severe SJL is associated with a higher frequency of sugar-sweetened beverage consumption and higher odds of having overweight or obesity compared with no SJL in adolescents.

Abstract
PURPOSE OF REVIEW This paper presents a review of the current literature in support of a model explaining the relationships between sleep health and risk for type 2 diabetes in adolescents. RECENT FINDINGS Short sleep duration is associated with risk of developing obesity in youth. Sleep restriction increases energy expenditure, but also increases hunger, appetite, and food intake, causing positive energy balance, impacting appetite-regulating hormones, and leading to increased eating late at night. Insufficient sleep may lead to reduced physical activity and greater sedentary behaviors. In addition, short sleep duration is associated with reduced insulin sensitivity. The cumulative negative consequences of insufficient sleep increase risk for type 2 diabetes. Applications to clinical care, public policy, and future research are discussed. Insufficient sleep in adolescence increases risk for type 2 diabetes directly through impact on insulin sensitivity and indirectly through increased dietary intake, sedentary activity, and weight gain.
