Abstract
Study Objectives Evidence suggests that adolescents and adults with a later chronotype have poorer sleep habits and are more susceptible to unhealthy behaviors, but little is known about these associations in younger children. The objective of the study was to (1) identify and compare individual chronotype tendencies among preschool-aged children and (2) investigate associations of sleep dimensions and chronotype with diet. Methods Participants were 636 3-6 years old (mean ± SD age: 4.74 ± 0.89 years, 49% girls) preschoolers from the cross-sectional Increased Health and Well-Being in Preschoolers (DAGIS) study in Finland. Sleep duration, sleep variability (in duration and midpoint), social jetlag, and midsleep on weekends adjusted for sleep debt (MSWEadj) were measured with 7-day actigraphy. Morning, intermediate, and evening chronotype tendencies were defined based on the lowest and highest 10th percentile cutoffs of MSWEadj. Food, energy, and macronutrient intake were assessed from 3-day records. Associations between sleep dimensions and diet were assessed with regression models. Results MSWEadj was 1:13 ± 14 minutes for morning (n = 64), 2:25 ± 28 minutes for intermediate (n = 560), and 3:38 ± 15 minutes for evening (n = 64) chronotype tendency. Children with an evening chronotype tendency had greater social jetlag and sleep variability. Having an evening chronotype tendency was associated with higher added sugar, higher sugary food consumption, and lower vegetable consumption compared to intermediate tendency types. A later chronotype (MSWEadj) was associated with higher sugary food consumption, as well as lower vegetable and fiber intake. Sleep duration, social jetlag, and sleep variability were not associated with diet. Conclusions Several less healthy sleep and diet behaviors were observed among children with later chronotypes. Future public health interventions aimed towards children would benefit from taking into account chronotype.

Abstract
STUDY OBJECTIVES Poor sleep in adolescents can increase the risk of obesity, possibly due to changes in dietary patterns. Prior neuroimaging evidence, mostly in adults, suggests that lacking sleep results in increased response to food cues in reward-processing brain regions. Needed is a clarification of the mechanisms by which food reward processing is altered by the kind of chronic sleep restriction (SR) typically experienced by adolescents. This study aimed to elucidate the impact of sleep duration on response to visual food stimuli in healthy adolescents using functional neuroimaging, hypothesizing increased reward processing response after SR compared to a well-rested condition. METHODS Thirty-nine healthy adolescents, 14-17 years old, completed a 3-week protocol: (1) sleep phase stabilization; (2) SR (~6.5 h nightly); and (3) healthy sleep (HS) duration (~9 h nightly). Participants underwent functional MRI while performing a visual food paradigm. Contrasts of food versus nonfood responses were compared within-subject between conditions of SR and HS. RESULTS Under SR, there was a greater response to food stimuli compared to HS in a voxel cluster including the left ventral tegmental area and substantia nigra. No change in food appeal rating due to the sleep manipulation was detected. CONCLUSIONS Outcomes of this study suggest that SR, as commonly experienced by healthy adolescents, results in the elevated dopaminergic drive of the reward network that may augment motivation to seek food in the context of individual food appeal and inhibitory profiles. Countermeasures that reduce food salience could include promoting consistent HS habits.

Abstract
STUDY OBJECTIVES This study examines the impact of sleep duration, bedtime, and sleep disturbance during early childhood on the risk of cardiometabolic disorder (CMD) in early adolescence. METHODS Within the Health Outcomes and Measures of Environment Study, we examined sleep patterns of 330 children from ages 2 to 8 years and the relationship of these sleep patterns with cardiometabolic risk measures at age 12 (N = 220). We used a group-based semi-parametric mixture model to identify distinct trajectories in sleep duration, bedtime timing, and sleep disturbance for the entire sample. We then examined the associations between sleep trajectories and CMD risk measures using general linear models using both an unadjusted model (no covariates) and an adjusted model (adjusting for child pubertal stage, child sex, duration of breastfeeding, household income, maternal education, and maternal serum cotinine). RESULTS In the unadjusted and adjusted models, we found significant differences in CMD risk scores by trajectories of sleep disturbance. Children in the "high" disturbance trajectory had higher CMD risk scores than those in the 'low' disturbance trajectory (p's = 0.002 and 0.039, respectively). No significant differences in CMD risk were observed for bedtime timing or total sleep time trajectories in the unadjusted or adjusted models. CONCLUSIONS In this cohort, caregiver-reported sleep disturbance in early childhood was associated with more adverse cardiometabolic profiles in early adolescence. Our findings suggest that trials to reduce CMD risk via sleep interventions-which have been conducted in adolescents and adults-may be implemented too late.

Abstract
Sleep and daytime movement behaviours occur co-dependently with each other within a finite 24 h day. Sleep parameters other than sleep duration, such as social jetlag and chronotype, have been linked to health problems and unhealthy behaviours among children and adolescents. Given the increasing number of studies examining sleep timing/chronotype and weight-related behaviours, including physical activity and sedentary behaviour, in the past decade, this systematic review and meta-analysis collated and evaluated the evidence on the relationships of social jetlag and chronotype with physical activity and sedentary behaviour among children and adolescents aged 3-17 years. Seven databases were searched on 16 March 2022, and 52 studies were identified as eligible for inclusion, 47 of which were suitable for the meta-analysis. A positive association was found between social jetlag and screen media use (r = 0.14, 95% CI: 0.04-0.24; I2 = 96%; p = 0.008). The morning chronotype was associated with a higher level of physical activity and a lower level of sedentary behaviour than the evening chronotype. No relationship was found between social jetlag and physical activity. The magnitude of heterogeneity among the included studies was high. Further experimental studies are urgently required to understand how circadian preference or misalignment affects activity behaviours. Interventions to promote an active lifestyle in young populations should consider their circadian preference, especially among individuals with the evening chronotype.

Abstract
Short sleep duration is associated with heightened cardiometabolic disease risk and has reached epidemic proportions among children, adolescents and adults. Potential mechanisms underlying this association are complex and multifaceted, including disturbances in circadian timing, food intake and appetitive hormones, brain regions linked to control of hedonic eating, physical activity, an altered microbiome and impaired insulin sensitivity. Sleep extension, or increasing total sleep duration, is an emerging and ecologically relevant intervention with significant potential to advance our understanding of the mechanisms underlying the association between short sleep duration and the risk of cardiometabolic disease. If effective, sleep extension interventions have potential to improve cardiometabolic health across the lifespan. Existing data show that sleep extension is feasible and might have potential cardiometabolic health benefits, although there are limitations that the field must overcome. Notably, most existing studies are short term (2-8 weeks), use different sleep extension strategies, analyse a wide array of cardiometabolic health outcomes in different populations and, frequently, lack adequate statistical power, thus limiting robust scientific conclusions. Overcoming these limitations will require fully powered, randomized studies conducted in people with habitual short sleep duration and existing cardiometabolic risk factors. Additionally, randomized controlled trials comparing different sleep extension strategies are essential to determine the most effective interventions. Ongoing and future research should focus on elucidating the potential cardiometabolic health benefits of sleep extension. Such studies have high potential to generate crucial knowledge with potential to improve health and quality of life for those struggling with short sleep duration.

Abstract
STUDY OBJECTIVES Obstructive sleep apnea (OSA) and poor sleep quality are highly prevalent in children with obesity, but their individual associations with health-related quality of life (HRQOL) are unknown in this population. The primary objective was to describe the independent association of OSA and sleep quality with HRQOL in children with obesity. METHODS This was a cross-sectional study of children with obesity at 2 tertiary care centers. Sleep quality and HRQOL were measured with the Pittsburgh Sleep Quality Index and Pediatric Quality of Life Inventory questionnaires, respectively. Multivariable regression models were created to evaluate associations between OSA and sleep quality with HRQOL. RESULTS There were 98 children (median age 15.0 years, median body mass index z-score 3.8, 44% females). Among the study population, 49/98 (50%) children reported poor sleep quality, 41/98 (42%) children had OSA, and 52/98 (53%) children reported impaired HRQOL. Self-reported poor sleep quality was independently associated with reduced HRQOL, whereas the presence of OSA was not. Children with poor sleep quality had a reduced Pediatric Quality of Life Inventory score by 8.8 compared to children with good sleep quality (95% confidence interval, 2.6-14.9; P = .006), when adjusting for age, sex, body mass index z-score, attention-deficit/hyperactivity disorder, mood/anxiety disorder, and study site. CONCLUSIONS In the current study of children with obesity, we found that HRQOL was more strongly associated with the self-reported experience of sleep than the presence of OSA. Abstract
INTRODUCTION Problematic sleep is a major threat to health and quality of life among adolescents. Hence, to provide directions for research and interventions, there is a need to examine the literature on adolescent sleep health in Africa. However, available studies on adolescent sleep health in Africa have not been properly mapped. Thus, this scoping review aims to investigate the extent and type of available evidence concerning sleep health among adolescents in Africa and to highlight the relationship of adolescent sleep health with adverse mental health outcomes and cardiometabolic risk factors. The review will further highlight areas of agreement and controversies on adolescent sleep health, and identify evidence gaps that require research attention across the continent. METHODS AND ANALYSIS This scoping review will be conducted using Arksey and O'Malley's six-step procedure. Thus, we have prepared this protocol according to the framework for scoping reviews developed by the Joanna Briggs Institute. To identify eligible studies, we will search MEDLINE, Scopus, PsycINFO, AJOL, JSTOR, HINARI and Google Scholar. The review will include all published articles in English, French, Spanish, Portuguese and Italian languages on adolescent sleep health in Africa from the inception of the databases, while relevant information will be extracted from included studies using an adapted data extraction tool. The results will be presented using tables and charts as appropriate. ETHICS AND DISSEMINATION The scoping review does not require ethical approval because the publications to be used for the review are publicly available and the study does not involve contact with humans or other animals as research participants. Furthermore, clinical records will not be used for the study. Upon completion, findings from the study will be disseminated through presentations at scientific meetings and publication in a relevant peer-reviewed journal. Abstract
BACKGROUND The limited research assessing relationships between sleep duration and weight status in infants and toddlers relies primarily on parent-reported sleep and cross-sectional studies. OBJECTIVES Examine whether average sleep duration and changes in sleep duration among 6-24-month-old children were associated with weight-for-length z-scores, and whether these associations varied by race/ethnicity, socioeconomic status and sex. METHODS Data were collected when children were approximately 6, 12, 18 and 24 months old (N = 116). Sleep duration was measured using actigraphy. Weight-for-length z-scores were calculated using children's height and weight. Physical activity was assessed using accelerometry. Diet was assessed using a feeding frequency questionnaire. Demographic characteristics included sex, race/ethnicity and socioeconomic status. Separate associations of between- and within-person changes in sleep duration were estimated with weight-for-length z-score treated as the outcome variable in linear mixed model analyses. Additional models were assessed that included interactions between sleep and demographic characteristics. RESULTS At time points where children slept longer at night compared to their own average, their weight-for-length z-score was lower. This relationship was attenuated by physical activity levels. CONCLUSIONS Increasing sleep duration can improve weight status outcomes in very young children who have low physical activity levels.

Abstract
Background Adolescents have weekday/weekend sleep discrepancies and may compensate for weekday sleep debt through sleep extension on weekends. Objective We investigated the effects of total sleep duration on weekdays/weekends on obesity and determined if weekend catch-up sleep has an ameliorating effect on obesity in Korean adolescents. Methods Using data from the KNHANES VII, 1,306 middle and high school students were assessed for total sleep duration on weekdays, weekends, and the entire week, as well as weekend sleep extension. Participants were classified into four groups according to weekend sleep extension. Results Total sleep duration and weekend sleep duration were negatively associated with body mass index z-score. Increased weekend sleep duration and sleep extension on weekends decreased the relative risk of overweight/obesity with each 30 min increment, reducing the risk by a factor of 0.39 and 0.93, respectively. The risk of overweight/obesity in adolescents who slept less than 6 h on weekdays increased by a factor of 1.93 when they slept for less than 3 h on weekends. Conclusion Weekend catch-up sleep had a negative dose-dependent association with obesity in Korean adolescents. Sleeping longer on weekends may be associated with a decreased risk of obesity, even if the adolescent obtains less sleep during weekdays. However, further prospective studies are needed to establish the causality between extended weekend sleep and obesity.

Abstract
Introduction Being more active, being less sedentary, and sleeping enough are associated with adequate body weight and adiposity in children. However, few researchers have analyzed these different lifestyle behaviors and the adherence to 24 h movement guidelines with respect to insulin resistance (IR) at school age. Therefore, we aimed to analyse the association between the adherence to 24 h movement guidelines (physical activity, sedentary time, sleep) and IR in Spanish schoolchildren. Methods A cross-sectional study of 839 children (8-13 years, 51.1% girls) were studied. Anthropometric, biochemical, and lifestyle behavioral data were collected. IR was defined as HOMA-IR>3.16. Compliance with the 24 h movement guidelines were defined as ≥60 min/day of moderate and/or vigorous physical activity, < 120 min/day of screen time, and 9-11 h/day of sleep time. Associations between adherence to the 24 h movement guidelines and IR were performed by multivariate logistic regression analyses. Results The IR in our sample was 5.0%, being higher in girls. Compliance with physical activity or screen time, but not with sleep recommendations, was associated with lower fasting glucose, fasting insulin, and HOMA-IR values. A low adherence to 24 h movement guidelines was associated with a higher risk of IR (odds ratio (95% CI): 2.150 [1.089-4.247]), especially in girls (odds ratio (95% CI): 2.800 [1.180-6.645]). Conclusion Higher physical activity levels and lower screen times were associated with a lower risk of IR in schoolchildren, underlining the importance of adhering to as many healthy lifestyle recommendations as possible.

Abstract
Ghrelin, a regulator of food intake and energy expenditure, has been shown to be associated with insufficient sleep. The goal of the present study was to investigate the effect of a single night of total sleep deprivation on fasting saliva ghrelin and on nocturnal variation of saliva ghrelin concentration. A further aim of the study was to investigate the influence of body mass index on changes in saliva ghrelin levels. Altogether 35 adolescents (18 boys; age: 13.8 ± 1.14 years) were studied on two subsequent days (sleep and total sleep deprivation). Saliva samples were collected during the two experimental nights at 21:00 hours, 01:00 hours and 06:00 hours. Total-ghrelin concentration showed a continuous increase from the evening until 06:00 hours. This increase was blunted significantly (p = 0.003) by total sleep deprivation. Total-ghrelin level was significantly lower (p = 0.02) during total sleep deprivation at 06:00 hours (median 403.6 pg ml-1 ; 95% confidence interval: 343.1-468.9 pg ml-1 ) as compared with values during the sleep condition (median 471.2 pg ml-1 ; 95% confidence interval: 205.4-1578.7 pg ml-1 ). Acyl-ghrelin levels did not present any change at the three time points, and were not affected by total sleep deprivation. Stratifying the study population according to body mass index (normal weight and overweight/obese groups), the blunting effect of total sleep deprivation was more pronounced in the obese/overweight group (sleep: median 428.2 pg ml-1 ; 95% confidence interval: 331.3-606.9 pg ml-1 versus total sleep deprivation: median 333.1 pg ml-1 ; 95% confidence interval: 261.5-412.9 pg ml-1 ; p = 0.0479). Saliva total-ghrelin concentrations gradually increased during the night, and total sleep deprivation significantly blunted this increase. This blunting effect was mainly observed in subjects with overweight/obesity. The physiological and clinical implications of the present observation are to be clarified by further studies.

Abstract
OBJECTIVE Adolescence is a developmental stage of critical changes in sleep and its circadian timing when the contribution of abnormal sleep variability (amount) and sleep regularity (timing) to obesity and its associated adverse cardiometabolic health outcomes appears to increase. The aim of this study was to summarize findings from studies conducted in adolescents examining both sleep variability and regularity in relation to obesity and cardiometabolic health. Gaps in research and potential causal pathways that future studies should examine are highlighted. RESULTS Nightly deviations in sleep duration and sleep midpoint appear to contribute to the development of obesity and associated adverse cardiometabolic outcomes in youth. Studies show that increased sleep variability and irregularity are associated with obesity, decreased physical activity, dysregulated eating and inadequate diet, metabolic dysfunction, impaired cardiac autonomic balance, and elevated blood pressure in adolescents. CONCLUSIONS A stable circadian timing of sleep is essential to the overall physical well-being of youth. Emerging evidence supports that sleep variability and circadian misalignment, including sleep irregularity, contribute to adverse obesity-related health outcomes early on in adolescence. Future studies should focus on the underlying behavioral and biological mechanisms in the causal pathway between day-to-day deviations in the amount and timing of sleep and obesity.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Insufficient sleep has been associated with weight gain and metabolic dysregulation, with one suggested mechanism being through reduction in diet quality. Experimental evidence supports a causal effect of sleep timings on diet but this may not be applicable to a free-living adolescent population. In this analysis we use daily measures of sleep timings and diet quality, to examine the effect of sleep duration and timing on diet quality the following day among free-living adolescents. METHODS The ROOTS study is a prospective cohort recruited from secondary schools in Cambridgeshire and Suffolk (UK). Participants (n = 815) at mean age 15.0y (SD 0.3y) completed a diet diary and wore a combined heart rate and accelerometer device over 4 consecutive days. Sleep duration and timing (midpoint) were derived from acceleration and heart rate traces, while daily energy density and fruit and vegetable intake were calculated from dietary data. Analyses were performed at day-level (1815 person-days). Multilevel random effects models were used to test associations between sleep each night and subsequent day diet, with daily sleep and diet measures nested within individuals and schools, and adjusted for day-level and individual-level confounding variables. RESULTS Adolescents slept a mean of 7.88 hrs (SD 1.10) per night, reporting a mean energy density of 2.12 kcal/g (SD 0.48) and median energy-adjusted daily fruit and vegetable intake of 137.3 g (IQR 130.4). One hour shorter sleep duration was associated with lower intake of fruit and vegetables (-6.42 g, 95%CI -1.84, -10.99) the following day. An association with higher dietary energy density (0.016 kcal/g, 95%CI 0.034, -0.002) the following day was observed but did not reach statistical significance. Sleep timing was not associated with either fruit and vegetable intake (-2.52 g/d, 95%CI -7.66, 2.62) or dietary energy density (-0.001 kcal/g, 95%CI -0.022, 0.020). CONCLUSIONS Our observational findings from a free-living adolescent population support the experimental evidence for a causal role of sleep on diet, with shorter sleep duration at night leading to a small decrease in diet quality the following day. These findings support experimental evidence to suggest inclusion of sleep duration as one component of interventions designed to improve diet quality and weight status in adolescents.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Insufficient sleep duration increases obesity risk in children, but the mechanisms remain unclear. OBJECTIVES This study seeks to determine how changes in sleep influence energy intake and eating behavior. METHODS Sleep was experimentally manipulated in a randomized, crossover study in 105 children (8-12 y) who met current sleep guidelines (8-11 h/night). Participants went to bed 1 h earlier (sleep extension condition) and 1 h later (sleep restriction condition) than their usual bedtime for 7 consecutive nights, separated by a 1-wk washout. Sleep was measured via waist-worn actigraphy. Dietary intake (2 24-h recalls/wk), eating behaviors (Child Eating Behavior Questionnaire), and the desire to eat different foods (questionnaire) were measured during or at the end of both sleep conditions. The type of food was classified by the level of processing (NOVA) and as core or noncore (typically energy-dense foods) foods. Data were analyzed according to 'intention to treat' and 'per protocol,' an a priori difference in sleep duration between intervention conditions of ≥30 min. RESULTS The intention to treat analysis (n = 100) showed a mean difference (95% CI) in daily energy intake of 233 kJ (-42, 509), with significantly more energy from noncore foods (416 kJ; 6.5, 826) during sleep restriction. Differences were magnified in the per-protocol analysis, with differences in daily energy of 361 kJ (20, 702), noncore foods of 504 kJ (25, 984), and ultraprocessed foods of 523 kJ (93, 952). Differences in eating behaviors were also observed, with greater emotional overeating (0.12; 0.01, 0.24) and undereating (0.15; 0.03, 0.27), but not satiety responsiveness (-0.06; -0.17, 0.04) with sleep restriction. CONCLUSIONS Mild sleep deprivation may play a role in pediatric obesity by increasing caloric intake, particularly from noncore and ultraprocessed foods. Eating in response to emotions rather than perceived hunger may partly explain why children engage in unhealthy dietary behaviors when tired. Abstract
PURPOSE This study aimed to examine the effects of substituting sedentary time with sleep or physical activity on adiposity in a longitudinal sample of adolescents. METHODS Adolescents (10-16 yr) were recruited for a prospective observational cohort. Parents and adolescents reported demographic characteristics and pubertal development. Accelerometry was used to measure sleep, physical activity, and sedentary time. Adiposity was quantified with imaging techniques. Isotemporal substitution modeling was conducted to examine the effect of substituting 10 min of sedentary time with sleep or differing intensities of physical activity. Results were stratified by sex and race and adjusted for covariates. RESULTS A total of 217 adolescents provided complete measures at both baseline and 2 yr later (58.1% White, 51.8% girls; 12.9 ± 1.9 yr at baseline). Sleep was negatively related to adiposity 2 yr later when considering other movement behaviors, but substituting baseline sedentary time with sleep was not related to future adiposity ( P > 0.05). In boys and non-White adolescents, substituting sedentary time with vigorous-intensity physical activity was related to lower adiposity 2 yr later ( P < 0.05). Substituting sedentary time for moderate- to vigorous-intensity physical activity was not associated with future adiposity. CONCLUSIONS Substituting sedentary time with vigorous-intensity physical activity was related to lower adiposity in later adolescence in certain groups. Opportunities to promote an adequate balance of sleep, sedentary time, and physical activity in all adolescents are encouraged for optimal development.

Abstract
Background To investigate the associations between overweight, obesity and sleep duration and related lifestyle behaviors in children and adolescents at different gender and educational stages. Methods A cross-sectional study comprising 18723 children and adolescents with a stratified cluster sampling method of Henan Province was conducted in 2019. A self-reported questionnaire was used to collect the information about demographic characteristics as well as sleep and lifestyle behaviors. Anthropometric measurements (height and weight) were taken and body mass index was computered as an indicator of overweight and obesity. The Chi-square test, one-way analysis of variance and multiple logistic regression were used to data analysis. Results Among the respondents, 12657(67.6%) were with normal weight, 3711(19.8%) were overweight and 2355(12.6%) were obesity. The average age of the participants was 12.6 years old. The proportion of overweight and obesity in the 10191 boys was 18.7% and 14.2% respectively. The proportion of overweight and obesity in the 8532 girls was 21.2% and 10.6% respectively. In trend analyses, sleep duration at different gender found with the decreased of the sleep duration, the proportions of overweight/obesity in boys and girls were gradually increased (Ptrend<0.05). In the adjusted logistic regression models, the results showed stratified by gender, compared with the recommended sleep duration group, students with very short sleep duration and short sleep duration showed an increased ORadj of 2.56 and 2.13 in boys, 2.34 and 2.09 in girls respectively. According to different educational stages, those in very short sleep duration and short sleep duration showed an increased ORadj of 2.15 and 1.69 in primary school, 2.26 and 1.58 in middle school, 2.23 and 1.51 in high school respectively. Conclusions Children and adolescents with very short sleep duration and short sleep duration may increase the risk of overweight/obesity, the association differed based on the gender-specific and educational stages-specific. Gender and educational stages should be regarded as specific characteristics for the effects on overweight/obesity in Henan Province.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Short sleep duration is related to risk for obesity in preschool children. However, the underlying mechanism(s) are not clear. OBJECTIVE We evaluated the relationship between sleep characteristics with body composition, energetics and weight-regulating behaviors in preschool-aged children; and the longitudinal associations between children's sleep and eating patterns with body composition at 1-year follow-up. METHODS Data were drawn from a longitudinal study of 118 children aged 3-5 years. Sleep (duration, midpoint, regularity) and physical activity (PA) were measured by accelerometry over 6 consecutive days; total energy expenditure (TEE) using the doubly-labeled water method; body composition (fat mass, fat-free mass, and %body fat) by dual energy x-ray absorptiometry; and dietary intake (energy intake, timing) using two 24-h recalls. Multivariable regression was used to estimate interindividual associations of sleep parameters with body composition, PA, TEE and dietary outcomes; and to examine the relationship between sleep and dietary behaviors with body composition one year later. RESULTS Cross-sectionally, later sleep midpoint was associated with greater fat mass (0.33; 95% CI: 0.05, 0.60) and %body fat (0.92; 95% CI: 0.15, 1.70). Later sleep midpoint was associated with delayed morning (0.51; 95% CI: 0.28, 0.74) and evening meal times (0.41; 95% CI: 0.29, 0.53), higher nighttime (45.6; 95% CI: 19.7, 71.4), and lower morning (-44.8; 95% CI: -72.0, -17.6) energy intake. Longitudinally, shorter sleep duration (-0.02; 95% CI: -0.03, -0.00) and later meal timing (0.83; 95% CI: 0.24, 1.42) were associated with higher %body fat 1 year later. CONCLUSIONS Shorter sleep duration and later meal timing are associated with adiposity gain in preschoolers.

Abstract
Background and objective
The high prevalence of obesity is a serious problem, and sleep is considered to be a factor for obesity. This study aimed to examine the relationship between sleep duration, sleep quality, and weight status among children and adolescents in China and to explore whether the relationship between sleep duration and weight status is independent of sleep quality. Sex and age differences were also explored. Methods A cross-sectional research was conducted among 2019 children and adolescents (1029 boys and 990 girls) aged 8–16 years in Shanghai. An open-question was used to obtain data on sleep duration, which was categorized into the following four groups based on the age-specific National Sleep Foundation Sleep Duration Recommendations: 1) very short, 2) short, 3) recommended, and 4) long. The Pittsburgh Sleep Quality Index was used to assess sleep quality. Weight and height were measured for all participants. The variable weight status was estimated with the Chinese children and adolescent age- and sex-specific body mass index (BMI) and was categorized into overweight/obesity and normal weight. Results Short sleep duration (7–8 and 6–7 h for 6–13 and 14–16 years old, respectively) significantly increased odds of overweight/obesity (OR = 1.32, 95% CI: 1.06–1.64) compared with that of the recommended sleep duration (9–11 and 8–10 h for 6–13 and 14–16 years old, respectively). The relationship between the two variables existed independent of sleep quality. No significant relationship was found between sleep quality and overweight/obesity of children and adolescents. Sleep quality (OR = 1.07, 95% CI: 1.01–1.14) and short sleep duration (OR = 1.51, 95% CI: 1.06–2.13) increased the risk for overweight/obesity among girls, whereas no significant relationships between sleep duration, sleep quality, and overweight/obesity were found among boys. Short sleep duration increased the risk of overweight/obesity in children aged 8–13 years (OR = 1.34, 95% CI: 1.05–1.71), independent of sleep quality, but no significant relationships between these two variables existed for adolescents aged 14–16 years. Conclusions Overall, short sleep duration increased the risks of overweight/obesity in children and adolescents in China, independent of sleep quality. This relationship is significant for girls and children aged 8–13 years instead of boys and adolescents aged 14–16 years. Interventions to extend the sleep duration of children and adolescents, especially girls and children aged 8–13 years in China, are necessary to improve their weight status. Abstract
OBJECTIVES To investigate associations of bedtimes and sleep durations with adiposity levels in children and adolescents. METHODS Individual data were pooled for 12 247 children (5819 with follow-up adiposity at 2.3 ± 1.4 years post-baseline) and 3563 adolescents from 11 international studies. Associations between questionnaire-based sleep durations, bedtimes and four groups of combined bedtimes and sleep lengths (later-shorter [reference]/earlier-shorter/later-longer/earlier-longer) with measured adiposity (body mass index [BMI] and waist circumference z-scores) and weight status, were investigated. RESULTS In children, longer sleep durations were consistently associated with lower adiposity markers, and earlier bedtimes were related to lower BMI z-score. Compared to sleeping <10 h, longer baseline sleep duration favourably predicted Δwaist z-score in girls (≥10 and <11 h (β-coefficient (95% confidence interval [CI])): -0.06 (-0.12 to -0.01)) and boys (≥11 h: -0.10 [-0.18 to -0.01]). Combined groups that were defined by longer sleep (later-longer and earlier-longer sleep patterns) were associated with lower adiposity, and later-longer sleep favourably predicted Δwaist z-score in girls (-0.09 [-0.15 to -0.02]). In adolescents, longer sleep durations and earlier bedtimes were associated with lower BMI z-score in the whole sample, and also with lower waist z-score in boys. Combined groups that were characterized by earlier bedtimes were associated with the same outcomes. For example, earlier-shorter (-0.22 (-0.43 to -0.01) and earlier-longer (-0.16 (-0.25 to -0.06) sleep were both associated with lower BMI z-score. CONCLUSIONS If the associations are causal, longer sleep duration and earlier bedtimes should be targeted for obesity prevention, emphasizing longer sleep for children and earlier bedtimes for adolescents.

Abstract
STUDY OBJECTIVES Children with overweight or obesity are more likely to experience sleep disorders, although the role of weight in pediatric insomnia treatment has not been examined. The current study examined the relationships of high body mass with pretreatment insomnia severity and global sleep problems and the potential moderating impact of weight on changes in insomnia severity following insomnia treatment. METHODS Participants included 1,133 youth ages 2-18 years clinically referred for insomnia treatment. The Pediatric Insomnia Severity Index was collected at the initial assessment and throughout treatment as part of routine clinical care. Treatment status was coded as no treatment, early termination, and completed treatment. Secondary measures of global sleep problems at the initial assessment included the Adolescent Sleep Wake Scale, Adolescent Sleep Hygiene Scale, and Children's Sleep Habits Questionnaire. Medical chart review of visits within ± 3 months of baseline was used to obtain age-adjusted and sex-adjusted body mass index Z-score. RESULTS Among adolescents, regression analyses found that higher body mass index Z-score modestly predicted baseline insomnia severity (P = .021) and worse sleep hygiene (P < .001). For children, higher body mass index Z-score was modestly associated with baseline total sleep problems (P = .006) but not insomnia severity (P = .792). Across ages, body mass index Z-score predicted neither treatment status nor insomnia improvement (P > .05). Findings were similar in categorical analyses comparing patients with overweight/obesity to healthy weight. CONCLUSIONS Although there is evidence that children of higher body mass present for insomnia treatment with greater sleep concerns, body mass does not predict treatment completion or insomnia improvement. Abstract
This study examined how short sleep impacts dietary consumption in adolescents by testing whether experimentally shortening sleep influences the amount, macronutrient content, food types, and timing of food consumed. Ninety-three adolescents completed a within-subjects crossover paradigm comparing five nights of short sleep (6.5-hour sleep opportunity) to five nights of Healthy Sleep (9.5-hour sleep opportunity). Within each condition, adolescents completed three multiple-pass dietary recalls that recorded the types, amount, and timing of food intake. The following outcomes were averaged across days of dietary recall within condition: kilocalories, grams of carbohydrates, fat, protein, and added sugars, glycemic load of foods, and servings of specific types of foods (low-calorie drinks, sweetened drinks, fruits/vegetables, meats/proteins, processed snacks, "fast food" entrees, grains, and sweets/desserts). Timing of consumption of kilocalorie and macronutrient outcomes were also examined across four noncumulative time bins: 06:00-10:59, 11:00-15:59, 16:00-20:59, and 21:00-01:00. Adolescents slept 2 h and 20 min longer in Healthy Sleep than in Short Sleep (p < .0001). While in Short Sleep, adolescents ate more grams of carbohydrates (p = .031) and added sugars (p = .047), foods higher in glycemic load (p = .013), and servings of sweet drinks (p = .023) and ate fewer servings of fruits/vegetables (p = .006) compared to Healthy Sleep. Differences in consumption of kilocalories, fat, and carbohydrates emerged after 9:00 pm (ps = .012, .043, .006, respectively). These experimental findings suggest that adolescents who have insufficient sleep exhibit dietary patterns that may increase the risk for negative weight and cardiometabolic outcomes. Future health promotion efforts should include promoting optimal sleep to increase healthy dietary habits.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Inconsistent sleep patterns may promote excess weight gain by increasing food cravings and loss-of-control (LOC)-eating; however, these relationships have not been elucidated in youth. OBJECTIVE We tested whether sleep duration and timing were associated with food cravings and LOC-eating. METHOD For 14 days, youths wore actigraphy monitors to assess sleep and reported severity of food cravings and LOC-eating using ecological momentary assessment. Generalized linear mixed models tested the associations between weekly and nightly shifts in facets of sleep (i.e., duration, onset, midpoint, and waketime) and next-day food cravings and LOC-eating. Models were re-run adjusting for relevant covariates (e.g., age, sex, adiposity). RESULTS Among 48 youths (12.88 ± 2.69 years, 68.8% female, 33.3% with overweight/obesity), neither weekly nor nightly facets of sleep were significantly associated with food cravings (ps = 0.08-0.93). Youths with shorter weekly sleep duration (est. ß = -0.31, p = 0.004), earlier weekly midpoints (est. ß = -0.47, p = 0.010) and later weekly waketimes (est. ß = 0.49, p = 0.010) reported greater LOC-eating severity; findings persisted in adjusted models. CONCLUSIONS In youth, weekly, but not nightly, shifts in multiple facets of sleep were associated with LOC-eating severity; associations were not significant for food cravings. Sleep should be assessed as a potentially modifiable target in paediatric LOC-eating and obesity prevention programs.

Abstract
STUDY OBJECTIVES Understanding the ideal composition of a child's day requires a better understanding of the relations between wake behaviors (sedentary behavior [SB], physical activity [PA]) and sleep. Here, we examine between- and within-person temporal associations between daytime wake behaviors and overnight sleep in early childhood, an important age when healthy behaviors are initiated and 24-hour behaviors are largely determined by caregivers. METHODS Daily, repeated measures of wake behavior and overnight sleep were assessed via wrist-worn actigraphy (mean = 9 days/nights) in 240 children (50.8 ± 9.8 months). Multilevel models with lagged effects were used to examine the temporal associations between wake and overnight sleep measures and adjusted for daily nap duration, age, sex, and socioeconomic status. RESULTS Between-person associations for sleep outcomes were negative between moderate-to vigorous-intensity PA (MVPA) and total activity for sleep efficiency (SE). Between-person associations for wake outcomes were positive between sleep duration and light PA, and negative between SE and both MVPA and total PA. When children obtained higher SE relative to their individual average, they were more likely to engage in less SB and greater MVPA and total PA the next day. CONCLUSIONS Generally, days with greater activity or sleep were not associated with greater subsequent sleep or PA. Most subsequent behaviors were not influenced by children achieving higher activity or sleep relative to their individual average levels, although higher SE was beneficially associated with next day wake behaviors. Future analyses with young children should consider within-person associations and could investigate lagged effects beyond one day.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Evidence investigating sleep pattern in relation to bone health in elderly participants with osteoporosis remains sparse. We aimed to assess the relationship between sleep pattern incorporating five sleep characteristics (snoring, midnight waking up, insomnia, sleep duration, and daytime napping) and bone mineral density (BMD) in elderly participants with osteoporotic fracture. METHODS A cross-sectional study was conducted to include eligible elderly patients from the Department of Orthopedics who were admitted to hospital due to an osteoporotic fracture. Sleep pattern was constructed based on total sleep scores and categorized into healthy, intermediate, and poor pattern groups. Multivariable logistic regression model was used to assess sleep pattern in relation to risk of low BMD. RESULTS A total of 169 elderly patients with osteoporotic fracture were included in this study (mean age: 71.91 years; 87.57% females). There were 36 (21.30%), 107 (63.31%), and 26 (15.38%) patients with healthy, intermediate, and poor sleep pattern, respectively. Compared with healthy sleep pattern, no significant relationship between intermediate sleep pattern and BMD was detected [odds ratio (OR) = 1.72, 95% confidence interval (CI): 0.74, 3.97, p = 0.21), while poor pattern was significantly associated with decreased BMD (OR = 3.50, 95% CI: 1.10, 11.14, p = 0.034). CONCLUSION The majority of elderly patients with osteoporotic fracture had unhealthy sleep pattern; poor sleep pattern was significantly related to reduced BMD when compared with healthy pattern. Further high-quality evidence is needed to assess and validate the relationship between sleep pattern and risk of low BMD in the elderly.

Abstract
The aim of this systematic review was to examine the associations between physical activity and sleep in children aged less than 6 years. Articles were included if participants were primarily aged less than 6 years and study designs were observational or experimental. Study characteristics were extracted, and the Grading Recommendations Assessment, Development and Evaluation framework was used to assess study quality. Thirty-six studies (16 sleep, 16 physical activity, and three fitness outcomes) from 18 countries reported in 29 articles were included. The majority of sleep and physical activity outcome studies reported mixed effects with very low to low quality of evidence. Fitness outcome studies were limited, and therefore, evidence was insufficient. The high prevalence of mixed and null results could be related to study limitations. Importantly, this review points to the critical need for higher quality studies of sleep and physical activity in young children, which would support health recommendations and intervention strategies for healthier child development.

Abstract
OBJECTIVE Beyond sleep duration, other facets of sleep such as variability and timing may be associated with obesity risk in youth. However, data are limited. Using a longitudinal design, this study tested whether multiple facets of sleep were associated with fat mass gain over 1 year. METHODS A convenience sample of non-treatment-seeking youth (age 8-17 years) wore actigraphy monitors for 14 days. Average weekly sleep duration, within-person sleep duration variability, weekend catch-up sleep, bedtime and wake time shift, social jet lag, bedtime, wake time, and sleep midpoint were calculated. The association of each facet of baseline sleep with 1-year fat mass, adjusting for baseline fat mass and height, was examined. RESULTS A total of 137 youths (54.0% female; mean [SD], age 12.5 [2.6] years; 28.4% non-Hispanic Black or African American; baseline fat mass = 15.3 [8.9] kg; 1-year fat mass = 17.0 [10.0] kg; 28.5% with baseline overweight or obesity) were studied. Wake time (p = 0.03) and sleep midpoint (p = 0.02) were inversely associated with 1-year fat mass, such that earlier wake time and midpoint were associated with higher 1-year fat mass. No other facet of sleep was significantly associated with 1-year fat mass (p > 0.09). CONCLUSIONS Using objective measures, youth with earlier wake times and sleep midpoints had greater gains in fat mass. Additional research is needed to determine whether sleep timing may be a modifiable target to prevent pediatric obesity.

Abstract
BACKGROUND While insufficient sleep duration has emerged as a strong, independent risk factor for obesity, the mechanisms remain unclear. One possibility is greater "eating in the absence of hunger" (EAH) or energy intake beyond the point of satiety, when tired. OBJECTIVE The aim was to determine whether mild sleep loss increases EAH in children. METHODS A crossover study was undertaken in 105 healthy children (8-12 y) with normal sleep (∼8-11 h/night). After randomization, children went to bed 1 h earlier (sleep extension) or 1 h later (sleep restriction) than their usual bedtime, over 2 intervention weeks separated by a 1-wk washout. At the end of each intervention week, children underwent an EAH feeding experiment involving a preloading meal until satiation, followed by an ad libitum buffet (of highly palatable snacks) to measure EAH, with each food item weighed before and after consumption. RESULTS Ninety-three children completed the EAH experiment. There was no evidence of a difference in energy intake from EAH between sleep restriction and extension conditions when analyzed as a crossover design. However, a learning effect was found, with children eating significantly less (-239 kJ; 95% CI: -437, -41 kJ; P = 0.018) during the preload phase and significantly more (181 kJ; 95% CI: 38, 322 kJ; P = 0.013) in the ad libitum phase in the second week. No significant differences were seen using an underpowered parallel analysis for energy intake during the ad libitum phase when sleep deprived (106 kJ; 95% CI: -217, 431 kJ; P = 0.514). CONCLUSIONS Our findings suggest that measuring a difference in eating behavior in relation to sleep proved unsuitable using the EAH experiment in a crossover design in children, due to a learning effect. Abstract
BACKGROUND The emerging adulthood is traditionally viewed as a time of optimal health, but also as a critical life span, characterized by changing life circumstances and the establishment of an individual lifestyle. Especially university life seems to hold several challenges impeding the manifestation of a health supporting manner, as many students tend to show a poorer health behavior and a higher amount of health-related problems than comparable age groups. This, along with a steady growth of the higher education sector, brings increased attention to the university setting in the context of prevention. To date, there are few empirical longitudinal and coherent cross-sectional data on the status of students' health literacy, health status, and health behaviors, and on the impact of the study format on students' health. The aim of this prospective cohort study is to reduce this research gap. METHODS Starting during winter semester 2020/21, the prospective cohort study collects data on health literacy, health status and health behavior on a semester-by-semester basis. All enrolled students of the IST University of Applied Sciences, regardless of study format and discipline, can participate in the study at the beginning of their first semester. The data are collected digitally via a specifically programmed app. A total of 103 items assess the subjectively perceived health status, life and study satisfaction, sleep quality, perceived stress, physical activity, diet, smoking, alcohol consumption, drug addiction and health literacy. Statistical analysis uses (1) multivariate methods to look at changes within the three health dimensions over time and (2) the association between the three health dimensions using multiple regression methods and correlations. DISCUSSION This cohort study collects comprehensive health data from students on the course of study. It is assumed that gathered data will provide information on how the state of health develops over the study period. Also, different degrees of correlations of health behavior and health literacy will reveal different impacts on the state of students' health. Furthermore, this study will contribute to empirically justified development of target group-specific interventions. Abstract
Short sleep appears to elevate obesity risk in youth; however, sleep is a multidimensional construct, and few studies have investigated parameters beyond duration. The objective of this study was to investigate if sleep onset time, duration, latency and night waking frequency are independently associated with adiposity and weight status in UK adolescents. This was a cross-sectional observational study of 10,619, 13-15 years olds. Adjusted linear and logistic regressions were used to investigate associations of self-reported sleep characteristics with adiposity markers (body mass index z-score and percent body fat) and weight status. Compared with a sleep onset before 10pm, later sleep timing was associated with higher adiposity and higher likelihood of overweight and obesity in boys (after midnight, odds ratio [95% confidence interval]: 1.76 [1.19-2.60]) and girls (between 11pm and 11:59pm: 1.36 [1.17-1.65]). Sleeping ≤ 8 hr, compared with > 9-10 hr, was associated with higher odds of overweight and obesity in both sexes (boys: 1.80 [1.38-2.35]; girls: 1.38 [1.06-1.79]), and so too was sleeping > 10 hr in girls (1.31 [1.06-1.62]), indicating evidence for a U-shaped association. Also in girls, compared to a sleep latency of 16-30 min, sleep latencies ≥ 46 min were associated with higher adiposity (46-60 min, beta coefficient [95% confidence interval], percent body fat: 1.47 [0.57-2.36]) and higher likelihood of overweight and obesity (46-60 min: 1.39 [1.05-1.83]), and often as opposed to never waking in the night was associated with higher adiposity (body mass index z-score: 0.24 [0.08-0.41]; percent body fat: 1.44 [0.44-2.44]). Sleep duration and timing in both sexes, and sleep quality in girls, appear to be independently associated with adiposity and weight status in adolescence, and may be important targets for obesity prevention.

Abstract
The interrelationships between sleep and daytime movement behaviours have been examined at interindividual level. Studies of within-person, temporal relationships of daytime physical activity (PA) and sedentary behaviour with the previous and subsequent nights' sleep are increasing. The present systematic review and meta-analysis synthesised the results of studies in school-aged children and youth. Eight databases (MEDLINE, PsycINFO, EMBASE, Global Health, PubMed, Web of Science, SPORTDiscus, and CINAHL) were searched for peer-reviewed articles that examined the association between daytime movement behaviours (including PA, sedentary time, or sedentary recreational screen time) and night-time sleep on the same day, or the association between night-time sleep and daytime movement behaviours the next day, in children and youth. A total of 11 studies comprising 9,622 children and youth aged 5-15 years met the inclusion criteria. Sedentary time was negatively associated with the subsequent night's sleep duration (r = -0.12, 95% confidence interval -0.23 to -0.00; I2 = 93%; p = .04). Positive relationships between PA and the previous or subsequent night's sleep duration were observed only for studies that adjusted for accelerometer wear time. There was some evidence suggesting that a longer sleep duration was associated with less sedentary time and a higher proportion of the daytime spent being physically active and vice versa, although the association was weak and based on a limited number of studies. From a clinical perspective, promotion of either sleep hygiene or daytime PA should be planned with considerations of the virtuous or vicious circle between these behaviours and monitor concurrent effects on the others.

Abstract
UNLABELLED In this large perspective cohort among European children and adolescents, we observed that daytime napping was positively associated with bone stiffness, while short or long sleep duration combined with poor sleep quality was associated with less bone stiffness. Our findings are important for obtaining optimal bone stiffness in childhood. INTRODUCTION To examine the cross-sectional and longitudinal associations between sleep duration, sleep quality, and bone stiffness index (SI) in European children and adolescents. METHODS Four thousand eight hundred seventy-one children aged 2-11 years from the IDEFICS study and 861 children aged 6-15 years from the subsequent I.Family study were included. Sleep duration (i.e., nocturnal sleep and daytime napping) and sleep quality (i.e., irregularly bedtime routine, have difficulty falling asleep and trouble getting up in the morning) were reported by self-administrated questionnaires. Nocturnal sleep duration was converted into age-specific z-scores, and total sleep duration was classified into short, adequate, and long based on the National Sleep Recommendation. Calcaneal SI of both feet were measured using quantitative ultrasound. Linear mixed-effects models with country as a random effect were used, with adjustments for sex, age, pubertal status, family socioeconomic status, physical activity, screen time, body mass index, and daylight duration. RESULTS Nocturnal sleep duration z-scores were positively associated with SI percentiles among participants with adequate sleep duration at baseline. Moreover, the positive association between daytime napping and SI percentiles was more pronounced in participants with adequate sleep duration at baseline, while at 4-year follow-up was more pronounced in participants with short sleep duration. In addition, extreme sleep duration at baseline predicted lower SI percentiles after 4 years in participants with poor sleep quality. CONCLUSION The positive associations between nocturnal sleep, daytime napping and SI depended on total sleep duration. Long-term detrimental effect of extreme sleep duration on SI only existed in individuals with poor sleep quality.

Abstract
Background: Shorter sleep duration and lower sleep quality have been previously associated with greater obesity risk among adult samples. Food insecurity has also been found to impact sleep patterns and obesity. Yet few studies have explored associations between sleep, food insecurity, and obesity in adolescent populations, who may have more irregular sleep patterns. Thus, the objectives of this study were to determine associations between measures of sleep, food insecurity, and weight status. Methods: Data were obtained from the Family Life, Activity, Sun, Health, and Eating (FLASHE) Study, an online cross-sectional study of parent and adolescent (12-17-year old) dyads. Participants were drawn from a Consumer Opinion Panel representative of the general population of the United States with respect to sex, education, income, age, household size, and region. First, multinomial logistic regression analyses were conducted to determine associations between sleep measures (adolescent-reported average nighttime sleep duration, having a regular bedtime, and having difficulty staying asleep), food insecurity (a validated two-item parent-reported measure), and weight status (being underweight, of healthy weight, overweight, and obese). Weight status was based upon adolescent BMI z-scores using Centers for Disease Control and Prevention growth charts using information from parent report of adolescent height and weight and adolescent-reported age and sex among adolescents (N = 1544). Conditional process models were also fitted to the data to determine whether food insecurity moderates the associations between sleep measures and weight status, and to determine whether the association between food insecurity and weight status is mediated by average sleep duration. Results: Compared to those with food security, a greater percentage of those with food insecurity reported having difficulties staying asleep and a longer average sleep duration. Multinomial logistic regression models demonstrated that having a regular bedtime was associated with lower odds of having obesity, having difficulties staying asleep was associated with greater odds of being underweight, and having food insecurity was associated with greater odds of being overweight. Conditional process models demonstrated that food insecurity did not moderate associations between sleep measures and weight status and that average nighttime sleep duration did not mediate the association between food insecurity and weight status. Conclusions: This is one of the first studies to examine associations between sleep, food insecurity, and weight status among adolescents. Results provide additional support for the need to uncover mechanisms for how sleep and food insecurity affect pediatric obesity using longitudinal data.

Abstract
INTRODUCTION Sleep curtailment is associated with obesity in children, but few studies have investigated this relationship in a longitudinal sample of adolescents. The aim of the present study was to examine the longitudinal association between weekday time in bed (TIB) at age 10-13 and overweight at age 16-19. METHODS Adolescents and their parents (N = 3025 families), participating in a longitudinal population-based study, completed questionnaires assessing habitual bedtime and wake time on weekdays, weight and height, socioeconomic status (SES), internalizing mental health problems and disturbed eating. Two surveys were administered with a 6-year interval (T1 and T2). A one-way analysis of covariance (ANCOVA) was performed examining the association between TIB and weight category 6 years later, with SES, internalizing problems and disturbed eating at baseline entered as covariates. Hierarchical and logistic regression analyses were used to assess TIB at age 10-13 years to as a predictor of body mass index (BMI) standardized deviation scores (SDS) and overweight status at age 16-19 adjusting for the same confounders and baseline BMI. RESULTS A linear inverse relationship between TIB at age 10-13 and BMI category at age 16-19 was demonstrated by the ANCOVA, p < 0.001. Shorter TIB was related to higher weight, but the effect size was small (partial eta squared = 0.01). When adjusting for the included baseline confounders in the hierarchical regression model TIB significantly predicted later BMI SDS (β = -0.039, p = 0.02). The adjusted logistic regression model showed that for each hour reduction of TIB at T1 the odds of being overweight/obese at T2 increased with a factor of 1.6. CONCLUSION Shorter TIB was found to be a significant, yet modest, independent predictor of later weight gain in adolescence. The findings implicate that establishing healthy sleep habits should be addressed in prevention and treatment strategies for adolescent obesity.

Abstract
CONTEXT Although dietary advice has long been a cornerstone of a healthy lifestyle, how sleep quality and quantity may interact with dietary intake or eating behaviors remains unclear. OBJECTIVE To consider a bidirectional relationship between sleep and diet in children aged 6-12 years via a systematic review following PRISMA guidelines. DATA SOURCES Relevant trials and observational studies were identified by searching the PubMed, Medline, Embase, and CENTRAL databases up to June 1, 2019, without language or date restrictions and supplemented with hand searching. Recognized procedures and reporting standards were applied. DATA EXTRACTION Data on participant characteristics, study parameters, diet measures, sleep measures, and findings of study quality assessment criteria were collected. DATA ANALYSIS Forty-five articles involving 308 332 participants on a diverse range of topics were included. Meta-analyses were planned but were impossible to perform due to high study heterogeneity. Most studies (82%) were cross-sectional, which prevented examining directionality of the observed associations. Risk of bias was assessed for trial, cohort studies, and cross-sectional studies, using the Cochrane Risk of Bias Tool or Newcastle Ottawa Scale. RESULTS Of 16 studies in which the effect of sleep on dietary intake was investigated, 81% (n = 13) reported a significant association. All studies (n = 8) of sugar-sweetened or caffeinated beverages reported a negative association with sleep, and in 6 of 7 studies in which eating behaviors were investigated, associations with sleep were reported. The use of objective measures of sleep and diet were scarce, with most trials and studies relying on subjective measures of sleep (68%) or diet (93%). CONCLUSION Because most studies investigating the relationship between sleep and diet in this age group are cross-sectional, temporality could not be determined. Additional randomized controlled trials and long-term cohort studies in middle childhood, particularly those using objective rather than questionnaire measures of sleep, are required to better understand interactions between diet and sleep. Abstract
Poor sleep is commonly reported in pediatric chronic pain. There are signals that intensive interdisciplinary pain treatments (IIPT) may inadvertently improve objective sleep, but this claim cannot be substantiated without baseline sleep data prior to IIPT. This study followed the objective sleep/wake patterns (e.g., duration, quality, timing, consistency) of pediatric patients with severely functionally disabling chronic pain before, during, and after inpatient IIPT (the Functional Independence Restoration Program-"FIRST Program"), alongside a similarly-disabled chronic pain Comparison Group. The final sample included N = 10 FIRST Patients and N = 9 Comparison Group patients. At baseline, the whole sample showed healthy sleep duration (~9 h), average sleep efficiency <90%, late sleep onset and offset (mean = 11:56 p.m.-8:50 a.m.), and highly inconsistent sleep schedules night to night. During IIPT, FIRST Patients maintained healthy sleep durations, moved sleep schedules 2 h earlier, and decreased timing and duration variability by >60 min while the Comparison Group maintained similar sleep to baseline. At follow up (1-2 months later), FIRST Patients' sleep schedules shifted later but were still less variable than at baseline. Results point to the malleability of sleep/wake patterns within treatment contexts with strict environmental control but suggest that these gains may be difficult for youth with chronic pain to maintain in the home environment.

Abstract
The aim of the study was to analyze sleep duration and behaviors in relation to psychological parameters in children and adolescents with obesity seeking inpatient weight-loss treatment in comparison to normal-weight children, and whether or not these variables would improve during the time course of treatment. Sixty children or adolescents with overweight and obesity (OBE) and 27 normal-weight (NW) peers (age: 9-17) were assessed for subjective sleep measures through self-reported and parent-reported questionnaires, as well as body weight, body composition, and psychological questionnaires. The OBE participants were assessed upon admission and before discharge of an inpatient multidisciplinary weight-loss program. NW participants' data were collected for cross-sectional comparison. In comparison to NW, children and adolescents with OBE had a shorter self-reported sleep duration and had poorer sleep behaviors and more sleep-disordered breathing as reported by their parents. No change in sleep measures occurred during the inpatient treatment. Psychological factors including higher anxiety, depression, and destructive-anger-related emotion regulation were moderate predictors for unfavorable sleep outcomes, independent of weight status. Children with obesity had less favorable sleep patterns, and psychological factors influenced sleep in children, independent of weight. More research is needed on the relationship and direction of influence between sleep, psychological factors, and obesity, and whether they can be integrated in the prevention and management of childhood obesity and possibly also other pediatric diseases.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Ample evidence attests to the relationship between short sleep duration, sleep problems and childhood obesity. However, few studies have examined the association between sleep timing and obesity in children. OBJECTIVES To investigate how sleep duration, problems and timing relate to obesity and obesogenic behaviours in children. METHODS Eighty-five children (58.8% girls) with severe obesity and mean (SD) age of 12.1 (2.9) years, were matched by age and sex with peers with normal weight (n = 85,12.0 [2.8] years). Sleep and moderate-to-vigorous physical activity (MVPA) were measured via accelerometer for seven consecutive days. Children self-reported emotional eating on the Dutch eating behavior questionnaire. Parents reported children's screen time and sleep problems. RESULTS Children with severe obesity had significantly later mean mid-sleep time, overall (36 minutes later, P < .001), on school nights (36 minutes later, P < .001) and weekend nights (39 minutes later, P = .002) compared to children with normal weight. Children with obesity had more sleep problems (P = .030), but no differences emerged in sleep duration or social jetlag. After adjusting for demographic factors, mid-sleep time was positively related to screen time (P = .030). Mid-sleep time and sleep duration were inversely related to time in MVPA (Ps ≤ .041). There were no other significant associations between the sleep variables and the obesogenic behaviours. CONCLUSIONS Later sleep timing was related to obesogenic behaviours in children and may represent an obesity risk factor.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Children's BMI gain accelerates during summer. The Structured Days Hypothesis posits that the lack of the school day during summer vacation negatively impacts children's obesogenic behaviors (i.e., physical activity, screen time, diet, sleep). This natural experiment examined the impact of summer vacation on children's obesogenic behaviors and body mass index (BMI). METHODS Elementary-aged children (n = 285, 5-12 years, 48.7% male, 57.4% African American) attending a year-round (n = 97) and two match-paired traditional schools (n = 188) in the United States participated in this study. Rather than taking a long break from school during the summer like traditional schools, year-round schools take shorter and more frequent breaks from school. This difference in school calendars allowed for obesogenic behaviors to be collected during three conditions: Condition 1) all children attend school, Condition 2) year-round children attend school while traditional children were on summer vacation, and Condition 3) summer vacation for all children. Changes in BMI z-score were collected for the corresponding school years and summers. Multi-level mixed effects regressions estimated obesogenic behaviors and monthly zBMI changes. It was hypothesized that children would experience unhealthy changes in obesogenic behaviors when entering summer vacation because the absence of the school day (i.e., Condition 1 vs. 2 for traditional school children and 2 vs. 3 for year-round school children). RESULTS From Condition 1 to 2 traditional school children experienced greater unhealthy changes in daily minutes sedentary (∆ = 24.2, 95CI = 10.2, 38.2), screen time minutes (∆ = 33.7, 95CI = 17.2, 50.3), sleep midpoint time (∆ = 73:43, 95CI = 65:33, 81:53), and sleep efficiency percentage (-∆ = 0.7, 95CI = -1.1, - 0.3) when compared to year-round school children. Alternatively, from Condition 2 to 3 year-round school children experienced greater unhealthy changes in daily minutes sedentary (∆ = 54.5, 95CI = 38.0, 70.9), light physical activity minutes (∆ = - 42.2, 95CI = -56.2, - 28.3) MVPA minutes (∆ = - 11.4, 95CI = -3.7, - 19.1), screen time minutes (∆ = 46.5, 95CI = 30.0, 63.0), and sleep midpoint time (∆ = 95:54, 95CI = 85:26, 106:22) when compared to traditional school children. Monthly zBMI gain accelerated during summer for traditional (∆ = 0.033 95CI = 0.019, 0.047) but not year-round school children (∆ = 0.004, 95CI = -0.014, 0.023). CONCLUSIONS This study suggests that the lack of the school day during summer vacation negatively impacts sedentary behaviors, sleep timing, and screen time. Changes in sedentary behaviors, screen time, and sleep midpoint may contribute to accelerated summer BMI gain. Providing structured programming during summer vacation may positively impact these behaviors, and in turn, mitigate accelerated summer BMI gain. Abstract
The use of 24-h ABPM has become commonplace when diagnosing and managing hypertension in the pediatric population. Multiple clinical guidelines recommend ABPM as the preferred method for identifying white-coat hypertension, masked hypertension, and determining degree of blood pressure (BP) control. Accurate, timely diagnosis and optimal management are particularly important in certain populations, such as children with chronic kidney disease (CKD), diabetes, and other conditions with increased risk for cardiovascular disease. Understanding how best to utilize ABPM to achieve these goals is important for pediatric nephrologists and other hypertension specialists. This review will provide practical information on the equipment, application, interpretation, and documentation of ABPM in the specialty clinic.

Abstract
Objective: Pathways underlying the sleep-obesity relationship in youth are poorly understood. In this study, we examined associations of sleep with sedentary time and moderate-to-vigorous physical activity (MVPA) among youth, stratified by weight category (obesity versus no obesity). A sub-aim examined whether controlling for screen time changed the sleep-sedentary time association. Methods: Methods entailed secondary analysis of baseline data collected June-August 2014-2017 during a school-based healthy weight management trial in Minneapolis/St. Paul, Minnesota. Participants (N = 114) were 8-to-12 years old with BMI ≥ 75th percentile, most of whom were members of racial/ethnic minority groups (57%) or from households receiving economic assistance (55%). Mean nightly sleep duration and daily screen time were measured by survey, MVPA and sedentary time by accelerometer, and height and weight by research staff. Multivariate linear regression examined associations of sleep with sedentary time and MVPA. Results: Sleep was inversely associated with hours of sedentary time (β = -1.34 [-2.11, -0.58] p = .001) and percent of time spent sedentary (β = -2.92 [-4.83, -1.01], p = .004), for youth with obesity only. The association was unchanged by screen time. Sleep was not significantly associated with MVPA in total sample or stratified models. Conclusions: Associations among sleep, activity levels, and obesity may differ based upon movement type (sedentary time vs MVPA) and weight category (obesity vs no obesity).

Abstract
Short sleep has been linked to adolescent risk of obesity, but questions remain regarding the dietary mechanisms by which this occurs. We tested whether mildly shortening sleep influences how rewarding and appealing healthy adolescents find several kinds of foods. Eighty-eight healthy adolescents completed a within-subjects crossover sleep experiment comparing 5 days of Short Sleep (6.5 hr sleep opportunity) with 5 days of Healthy Sleep (9.5 hr sleep opportunity). Following each condition, adolescents completed measures of food appeal and reinforcing value of food across five food types: sweets/desserts, fruits/vegetables, lean meats/eggs, fast food and processed snacks. Adolescents averaged 2.2 hr/night longer sleep periods in Healthy Sleep versus Short Sleep. We observed a significant interaction of experimental order with sleep condition on three of four primary outcomes related to the appeal and reinforcing value of foods (p's < .005). When Short Sleep preceded Healthy Sleep, adolescents endorsed significantly greater appeal (p < .04) and rewarding value of food (p's ranging from <.01 to .048) during Short Sleep (compared to Healthy Sleep). However, when Healthy Sleep preceded Short Sleep, we did not observe a main effect of sleep condition on the same outcomes (p's > .05). This study provides evidence that restricting adolescents' sleep opportunity to 6.5 hr (compared to sleeping a healthy amount) increases the appeal and reinforcing value of a variety of foods, but this may occur only under protracted short sleep. Increased food reward may be one mechanism linking chronically shortened sleep with risk of obesity in adolescence.

Abstract
Poor sleep is related to increased obesity risk in adolescents, though the mechanisms of this relationship are unclear. This paper presents a conceptual framework of the various pathways that have been proposed to drive this relationship. In this framework, increased food reward, emotional reactivity, decreased inhibitory control, metabolic disturbances, poorer dietary quality, and disrupted meal timings may increase the likelihood of increasing overall energy intake. This paper further notes how poor sleep increases sedentary behavior and screen time, which likely limits overall energy expenditure. The model posits that these mechanisms result in an imbalance of energy intake and expenditure following poor sleep, intensifying the overall risk for obesity. Increases in food reward processes, decreases in insulin sensitivity, disrupted meal timing, and increases in sedentary behavior seem to be the most compelling mechanisms linking poor sleep with increased obesity risk in adolescents. Future directions and clinical implications of this framework are discussed.
