Abstract
In the 1980s, Poland was a medium-endemic country, with one of the highest incidences of hepatitis B in Europe (45/105 inhabitants). Pursuant to the WHO guidelines, obligatory vaccination was introduced in 1994-1996 (as a part of hepatitis B prophylaxis for newborns), and in 2000-2011, all 14-year-olds were vaccinated. To prevent transfusion-transmitted HBV infection (TT-HBV), since the 1970s, each donation has been tested for HBsAg and, since 2005, additionally for the presence of HBV DNA. Based on the data from the Blood Transfusion Centers, changes in HBV detection in Polish blood donors were analyzed, starting from the introduction of mandatory NAT screening until 2019. During the period under analysis, a total of 11,625 HBV-infected donors were identified: 97.95% were seropositive (confirmed HBsAg) and 2.05% were seronegative (NAT yields). The detection frequency for both categories of infections was significantly (p = 0.05) higher for men than for women (Residual Risk RR = 1.4 and RR = 2.63, respectively). Seropositive infections were detected more frequently (p < 0.05) in first-time donors than in repeat donors (RR = 360), while no significant differences were observed in the category of seronegative infections. A downward trend in HBsAg detection was observed in both first-time and repeat donors (Spearman's coefficient R = -0.98 and R = -0.90, respectively). The frequency of HBsAg in first-time donors decreased 5-fold, and, in repeat donors, 30-fold. In both subpopulations, the largest decrease occurred in the age group ≤ 20 years (i.e., donors born between 1985 and 2001). The incidence of window period (WP) infections in the repeat donor group demonstrated a downward trend (R = -0.54, p < 0.05), and in the first-time donor group, no significant trend was recorded. For occult hepatitis B infection (OBI), no significant trend was observed in either donor subpopulation. WP infections were detected significantly more often in donors aged 21-50 years than in donors ≤20 years, most often in the 41-50 age group. The frequency of OBI increased with donor age and was the highest in the 51-60 age group. A spectacular decrease in the frequency of HBsAg(+) infections was observed in current study, indicating the effectiveness of the hepatitis prevention strategy applied in Poland. We expect that the improvement in the epidemiological situation among blood donors causes a reduction in the risk of TT-HBV. Confirmation of this hypothesis by the analysis of residual risk should be a subject of further studies.

Abstract
This study compared the hospitalization expenses of patients with chronic bronchitis in a central province (Province A) in China to estimate the direct medical cost of the family. Our data included hospitalization records of 30,341 patients with chronic bronchitis from five urban general hospitals in Province A. Using descriptive statistics and regression analysis, we explored the relevant factors affecting hospitalization expenses. Our study results have indicated that from 2016 to 2020, the medical expenditure of patients with chronic bronchitis increased annually, with an average annual growth rate of 22.65%. Among all kinds of expenses, the hospitalization expenses, drug cost, bed cost, test cost and other cost of UEMI (Urban Employee Medical Insurance) are higher than that of other types of medical insurance. The check-up fees of CMI (Commercial Insurance) are lower than that of other types of insurance. Between 2016 and 2019, the average medical expenses per patient with chronic bronchitis increased by 44%, which is the highest average medical expenses among patients aged 60-70. And the highest average medical expenditure emerged when the number of service days is between 5 and 10 days. The increase in expenditure could be attributed to the rapid development of medical technology and the increasing medical demand of the people. Overall, the results of our study implied a significant increase in medical expenses for patients with chronic bronchitis from 2015 to 2020, indicating that chronic bronchitis could bring heavy economic pressures to patients, their families and society.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Current treatments for chronic hepatitis B management include orally administered nucleos(t)ide analogues, such as tenofovir (TDF), which is an acyclic adenine nucleotide analogue used both in HBV and human immune deficiency virus (HIV). The course of HBV infection is mainly dependent on viral factors, such as HBV genotypes, immunological features and host genetic variables, but a few data are available in the context of HBV, in particular for polymorphisms of genes encoding proteins involved in drug metabolism and elimination. Consequently, the aim of this study was to evaluate the potential impact of genetic variants on TDF plasma and urine concentrations in patients with HBV, considering the role of HBV genotypes. METHODS A retrospective cohort study at the Infectious Disease Unit of Amedeo di Savoia Hospital, Torino, Italy, was performed. Pharmacokinetic analyses were performed through liquidi chromatography, whereas pharmacogenetic analyses through real-time PCR. FINDINGS Sixty - eight patients were analyzed: ABCC4 4976 C>T genetic variant showed an impact on urine TDF drug concentrations (p = 0.014). In addition, SLC22A6 453 AA was retained in the final regression multivariate model considering factors predicting plasma concentrations, while ABCC4 4976 TC/CC was the only predictor of urine concentrations in the univariate model. INTERPRETATION In conclusion, this is the first study showing a potential impact of genetic variants on TDF plasma and urine concentrations in the HBV context, but further studies in different and larger cohorts of patients are required.

Abstract
Chronic hepatitis B virus (HBV) infections are strongly associated with liver cirrhosis, inflammation, and hepatocellular carcinoma. In this context, the viral HBx protein is considered as a major factor influencing HBV-associated pathogenesis through deregulation of multiple cellular signaling pathways and is therefore a potential target for prognostic and therapeutic applications. However, HBV-associated pathogenesis differs significantly between genotypes, with the relevant factors and in particular the contribution of the genetic diversity of HBx being largely unknown. To address this question, we studied the specific genotype-dependent impact of HBx on cellular signaling pathways, focusing in particular on morphological and functional parameters of mitochondria. To exclusively investigate the impact of HBx of different genotypes on integrity and function of mitochondria in the absence of additional viral factors, we overexpressed HBx in Huh7 or HepG2 cells. Key signaling pathways were profiled by kinome analysis and correlated with expression levels of mitochondrial and pathogenic markers. Conclusively, HBx of genotypes A and G caused strong disruption of mitochondrial morphology alongside an induction of PTEN-induced putative kinase 1/Parkin-mediated mitophagy. These effects were only moderately dysregulated by genotypes B and E, whereas genotypes C and D exhibit an intermediate effect in this regard. Accordingly, changes in mitochondrial membrane potential and elevated reactive oxygen species production were associated with the HBx-mediated dysfunction among different genotypes. Also, genotype-related differences in mitophagy induction were identified and indicated that HBx-mediated changes in the mitochondria morphology and function strongly depend on the genotype. This indicates a relevant role of HBx in the process of genotype-dependent liver pathogenesis of HBV infections and reveals underlying mechanisms.IMPORTANCEThe hepatitis B virus is the main cause of chronic liver disease worldwide and differs in terms of pathogenesis and clinical outcome among the different genotypes. Furthermore, the viral HBx protein is a known factor in the progression of liver injury by inducing aberrant mitochondrial structures and functions. Consequently, the selective removal of dysfunctional mitochondria is essential to maintain overall cellular homeostasis and cell survival. Consistent with the intergenotypic difference of HBV, our data reveal significant differences regarding the impact of HBx of different genotypes on mitochondrial dynamic and function and thereby on radical oxygen stress levels within the cell. We subsequently observed that the induction of mitophagy differs significantly across the heterogenetic HBx proteins. Therefore, this study provides evidence that HBx-mediated changes in the mitochondria dynamics and functionality strongly depend on the genotype of HBx. This highlights an important contribution of HBx in the process of genotype-dependent liver pathogenesis.

Abstract
Background and Aims Street children face a disproportionately higher risk of human immunodeficiency virus (HIV), hepatitis B virus (HBV), and hepatitis C virus (HCV) due to high-risk sexual and drug use practices. We aimed to estimate the prevalence of these infections and related risk behaviors among street children in Iran. Methods We searched PubMed, Web of Science (ISI), Embase, Scopus, and Google Scholar for the English-language records and Iranian databases, including SID, Magiran, and IRANDOC for the Farsi-language records up to September 18, 2022. Random effects analysis was used to obtain prevalence estimates for each condition. Homogeneity across included studies was assessed using I 2. Results We extracted data from 18 eligible studies, representing 5646 children (83.2% boys), with a mean age of 10.2 (range: 5-18). The prevalence of HIV, HBV, and HCV were 0.79% (95% confidence intervals [CIs]: 0.0-5.56), 1.97% (95% CI: 1.01-3.19), and 1.88% (95% CI: 0.74-3.46), respectively. The prevalence of lifetime drug use and sexual abuse was 8.32% (95% CI: 4.83-12.62) and 10.18% (95% CI: 3.02-20.67) among street children, respectively. Conclusion The estimated prevalence of HIV, HBV, and HCV among street children in Iran was higher than the estimates in the general population. Moreover, drug use and the experience of sexual abuse were prevalent among this population. These findings suggest the need for targeted prevention programs for street children in Iran.

Abstract
In recent years, the incidence of hepatitis B has been serious in Hainan Province of China. To construct a statistical model of the monthly incidence of hepatitis B in Hainan Province of China and predict the monthly incidence of hepatitis B in 2022. Simple central moving average method and seasonal index were used to analyze the trend and seasonal effects of monthly incidence of hepatitis B. Based on the time series of reported monthly incidence of hepatitis B in Hainan Province from 2017 to 2020, a multiplicative seasonal model (SARIMA), multiplicative seasonal model combined with error back propagation neural network model (SARIMA-BPNN), and a gray prediction model were constructed to fit the incidence, and the time series of monthly incidence of hepatitis B in 2021 was used to verify the accuracy of models. The lowest and highest monthly incidence of hepatitis B in Hainan Province were in February and August, respectively, and MAPE of SARIMA, SARIMA-BPNN, and gray prediction models were 0.089, 0.087, and 0.316, respectively. The best fitting model is the SARIMA-BPNN model. The predicted monthly incidence of hepatitis B in 2022 showed a downward trend, with the steepest decline in March, which indicates that the prevention and control of hepatitis B in Hainan Province is effective, and the study can provide scientific and reasonable suggestions for the prevention and control of hepatitis B in Hainan.

Abstract
Background The incidence of hepatitis B virus (HBV) has decreased year by year in China after the expansion of vaccination, but there is still a high disease burden in Jiangsu Province of China. Methods The year-by-year incidence data of HBV in Jiangsu Province from 1990 to 2021 were collected. The incidence rates of males and females age groups were clustered by systematic clustering, and the incidence rates of each age group were analyzed and studied by using Joinpoint regression model and age-period-cohort effect model (APC). Results Joinpoint regression model and APC model showed a general decrease in HBV prevalence in both males and females. In addition, the results of the APC model showed that the age, period, and cohort effects of patients all affected the incidence of HBV, and the incidence was higher in males than in females. The incidence is highest in the population between the ages of 15 and 30 years (mean: 21.76/100,000), especially in males (mean: 31.53/100,000) than in females (mean:11.67/100,000). Another high-risk group is those over 60 years of age (mean: 21.40/100,000), especially males (mean: 31.17/100,000) than females (mean: 11.63/100,000). The period effect of the APC model suggests that HBV vaccination is effective in reducing the incidence of HBV in the population. Conclusions The incidence of HBV in Jiangsu Province showed a gradual downward trend, but the disease burden in males was higher than that in females. The incidence is higher and increasing rapidly in the population between the ages of 15 and 30 years and people over 60 years of age. More targeted prevention and control measures should be implemented for males and the elderly.

Abstract
Chronic hepatitis B virus (HBV) infection affects about 262 million people worldwide, leading to over 820,000 deaths each year primarily due to cirrhosis and hepatocellular carcinoma. The World Health Organization has pledged to eliminate HBV as a health threat by 2030, but currently, no countries are on track to achieve this goal. One of the barriers to HBV elimination is stigma, causing shame, denial, self-isolation, self-rejection, and depression leading to those with chronic HBV less likely to get tested or seek treatment and more likely to conceal their infection. Other barriers include limited access to care and complicated and restrictive clinical practice guidelines. Increasing public and political efforts are necessary to raise awareness, increase access to care, and change screening and treatment guidelines. The current guidance of the American Association for the Study of Liver Diseases (AASLD) recommends testing only if patients are considered at risk, but this has proven to be ineffective. We propose a simplified "test all and treat all" approach with a 5-line guideline for HBV infection. Universal screening and treatment of adults is cost-effective and can prevent transmission by effectively managing chronic HBV. All patients who are hepatitis B surface antigen (HBsAg) positive with detectable HBV-DNA should receive treatment until HBsAg is undetectable for 12 months, as HBV-DNA transmission via blood transfusion can occur even at low viral loads of 16 copies/mL, and mother-to-child transmission is still a risk even with passive-active immunoprophylaxis. Furthermore, clinical outcomes after HBsAg clearance are significantly better than the clinical outcomes of those who remain HBsAg positive.

Abstract
Although comprehensive vaccination is the cornerstone of public health programs to control hepatitis B virus (HBV) infections, 5% of people who receive the existing vaccine do not develop proper immunity against HBV. To overcome this challenge, researchers have tried using various protein fragments encoded by the virus genome to achieve better immunization rates. An important antigenic component of HBsAg called the preS2/S or M protein has also received much attention in this area. The gene sequences of preS2/S and Core18-27 peptide were extracted from the GenBank (NCBI). Final gene synthesis was conducted with pET28. Groups of BALB/c mice were immunized with 10 μg/ml of recombinant proteins and 1 μg/ml CPG7909 adjuvant. Serum levels of IF-γ, TNF-α, IL-2, IL-4, and IL-10 were measured by ELISA assay method on spleen cell cultures on day 45, and IgG1, IgG2a, and total IgG titers obtained from mice serum were quantified on days 14 and 45. Statistical analysis did not show any significant difference between the groups regarding IF-γ level. There were, however, significant differences in terms of IL-2 and IL-4 levels between the groups receiving preS2/S-C18-27 with and without adjuvant and the groups receiving both preS2/S and preS2/S-C18-27 (Plus Recomb-Plus Recomb: the group of mice that received both preS2/S and preS2/S-C18-27 simultaneously). The strongest total antibody production was induced by immunization with both recombinant proteins without CPG adjuvant. The groups that received both preS2/S and preS2/S-C18-27, whether with or without adjuvant, were significantly different from those that received the conventional vaccine considering most abundant interleukins. This difference suggested that higher levels of efficacy can be achieved by the use of multiple virus antigen fragments rather than using a single fragment.

Abstract
OBJECTIVE Estimating the deterioration paths of chronic hepatitis B (CHB) patients is critical for physicians' decisions and patient management. A novel, hierarchical multilabel graph attention-based method aims to predict patient deterioration paths more effectively. Applied to a CHB patient data set, it offers strong predictive utilities and clinical value. MATERIALS AND METHODS The proposed method incorporates patients' responses to medications, diagnosis event sequences, and outcome dependencies to estimate deterioration paths. From the electronic health records maintained by a major healthcare organization in Taiwan, we collect clinical data about 177 959 patients diagnosed with hepatitis B virus infection. We use this sample to evaluate the proposed method's predictive efficacy relative to 9 existing methods, as measured by precision, recall, F-measure, and area under the curve (AUC). RESULTS We use 20% of the sample as holdouts to test each method's prediction performance. The results indicate that our method consistently and significantly outperforms all benchmark methods. It attains the highest AUC, with a 4.8% improvement over the best-performing benchmark, as well as 20.9% and 11.4% improvements in precision and F-measures, respectively. The comparative results demonstrate that our method is more effective for predicting CHB patients' deterioration paths than existing predictive methods. DISCUSSION AND CONCLUSION The proposed method underscores the value of patient-medication interactions, temporal sequential patterns of distinct diagnosis, and patient outcome dependencies for capturing dynamics that underpin patient deterioration over time. Its efficacious estimates grant physicians a more holistic view of patient progressions and can enhance their clinical decision-making and patient management.

Abstract
The burden of malignancy related to viral infection is increasing in Sub-Saharan Africa (SSA). In 2018, approximately 2 million new cancer cases worldwide were attributable to infection. Prevention or treatment of these infections could reduce cancer cases by 23% in less developed regions and about 7% in developed regions. Contemporaneous increases in longevity and changes in lifestyle have contributed to the cancer burden in SSA. African hospitals are reporting more cases of cancer related to infection (e.g., cervical cancer in women and stomach and liver cancer in men). SSA populations also have elevated underlying prevalence of viral infections compared to other regions. Of 10 infectious agents identified as carcinogenic by the International Agency for Research on Cancer, six are viruses: hepatitis B and C viruses (HBV and HCV, respectively), Epstein-Barr virus (EBV), high-risk types of human papillomavirus (HPV), Human T-cell lymphotropic virus type 1 (HTLV-1), and Kaposi's sarcoma herpesvirus (KSHV, also known as human herpesvirus type 8, HHV-8). Human immunodeficiency virus type 1 (HIV) also facilitates oncogenesis. EBV is associated with lymphomas and nasopharyngeal carcinoma; HBV and HCV are associated with hepatocellular carcinoma; KSHV causes Kaposi's sarcoma; HTLV-1 causes T-cell leukemia and lymphoma; HPV causes carcinoma of the oropharynx and anogenital squamous cell cancer. HIV-1, for which SSA has the greatest global burden, has been linked to increasing risk of malignancy through immunologic dysregulation and clonal hematopoiesis. Public health approaches to prevent infection, such as vaccination, safer injection techniques, screening of blood products, antimicrobial treatments and safer sexual practices could reduce the burden of cancer in Africa. In SSA, inequalities in access to cancer screening and treatment are exacerbated by the perception of cancer as taboo. National level cancer registries, new screening strategies for detection of viral infection and public health messaging should be prioritized in SSA's battle against malignancy. In this review, we discuss the impact of carcinogenic viruses in SSA with a focus on regional epidemiology.

Abstract
Virus threatens life health seriously. The accurate early diagnosis of the virus is vital for clinical control and treatment of virus infection. Aptamers are small single-stranded oligonucleotides (DNAs or RNAs). In this review, we summarized aptasensors for virus detection in recent years according to the classification of the viral target protein, and illustrated common detection mechanisms in the aptasensors (colorimetry, fluorescence assay, surface plasmon resonance (SPR), surface-enhanced raman spectroscopy (SERS), electrochemical detection, and field-effect transistor (FET)). Furthermore, aptamers against different target proteins of viruses were summarized. The relationships between the different biomarkers of the viruses and the detection methods, and their performances were revealed. In addition, the challenges and future directions of aptasensors were discussed. This review will provide valuable references for constructing on-site aptasensors for detecting viruses, especially the SARS-CoV-2.

Abstract
A relevant gradual reduction of both the incidence rate of acute hepatitis B (AHB) and prevalence of chronic hepatitis B has occurred in Italy in the last 50 years, due to substantial epidemiological changes: Improvement in socioeconomic and hygienic conditions, reduction of the family unit, accurate screening of blood donations, abolition of re-usable glass syringes, hepatitis B virus (HBV)-universal vaccination started in 1991, use of effective well tolerated nucleo(t)side analogues able to suppress HBV replication available from 1998, and educational mediatic campaigns against human immunodeficiency virus infection focusing on the prevention of sexual and parenteral transmission of infections. As an example, AHB incidence has gradually decreased from 10/100000 inhabitants in 1985 to 0.21 in 2020. Unfortunately, the coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) pandemic has interrupted the trend towards HBV eradication. In fact, several HBV chronic carriers living in the countryside have become unable to access healthcare facilities for screening, diagnosis, clinical management, and nucleo(t)side analogue therapy in the COVID-19 pandemic, mainly for anxiety of becoming infected with severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus 2 (SARS-CoV-2), movement restrictions, and reduced gains from job loss. In addition, one-third of healthcare facilities and personnel for HBV patients have been devolved to the COVID-19 assistance.

Abstract
Stellaria media Linn., a member of the family Caryophyllaceae, is generally known by the name of Chickweed. This plant is extensively cultivated globally and is inherent to Africa, Asia, China, Europe, and North America. It is a well-known medicinal plant with immense therapeutic uses. Nutritional studies have revealed the presence of protein, especially 16 amino acids, vitamins, and minerals such as calcium, iron, phosphorus, and zinc. Phytochemicals, mainly flavonoids, isoflavonoids, saponins, tannins, alkaloids, phenolic acids, triterpenoids, phenolic compounds, and anthraquinone are present in chickweed. It has multiple therapeutic potentials like anti-obesity, anti-diabetic, anti-fungal, anti-bacterial, anti-inflammatory, anti-leishmanial, anti-anxiety, and toxicity profiles. The crude extracts and their metabolites did not show any toxicity in the experimental animal. This review summarizes the nutritional, phytochemical, pharmacological, and toxicity studies on this plant concerning its future use in pharmacological drugs.

Few studies have explored the incidence of and determinants for spontaneous seroclearance using a long-term follow-up cohort study. Our research aimed to examine the incidence of and influencing factors for hepatitis B virus infection and spontaneous clearance of HBsAg from a large-scale cohort in China. Methods: A total of 151,926 resident individuals in Tongxiang underwent HBsAg screening at least thrice in a 7-year period. Serum samples collected at baseline and follow-up examinations were tested for HBsAg. Cox proportional hazard models were used to analyze determinants of HBsAg seroclearance and persistent HBsAg presence. Results: Among the 151,926 participants, new hepatitis B infections occurred in 4,497 participants, yielding an incidence rate of 571.38 per 100,000 person-years. The incidence rate for males was higher than that for females. In the multivariate Cox regression analysis, female gender, alcohol drinking history, hepatitis family history and middle-age group were predictors for persistent positive HBsAg status. Conclusions: The incidence rate of new hepatitis B infections was 571.38 per 100,000 person-years. Male and aged people in this community cohort have a higher infection rate. Alcohol drinking and hepatitis family history were risk factor leading to chronic infection. Female and middle-aged people were prone to persistent positive HBsAg status.

Abstract
Hepatitis B virus (HBV) is the world's most prevalent chronic viral infection. More than 350 million individuals are chronic carriers of the virus, with an estimated 2 billion infected persons. For instance, the role of HBx protein in attachment and infection is very obvious and consequently deemed as an important druggable target. Targeting the interface and discovering novel drugs greatly advanced the field of therapeutics development. Therefore, in the current study, HBx to Bcl-xL is abrogated on high-affinity carbon nanotubes using computational structural biology tools. Our analysis revealed that among the total 62 carbon fullerenes, only 13 compounds exhibited inhibitory activity against HBx, which was further confirmed through IFD-based rescoring. Structural dynamics investigation revealed stable binding, compactness, and hydrogen bonds reprogramming. Moreover, the binding free energy calculation results revealed that the top hits1-4 possess the total binding energy of -54.36 kcal/mol (hit1), -50.81 kcal/mol (hit2), -47.09 kcal/mol (hit3), and -45.59 kcal/mol for hit4. In addition, the predicted KD values and bioactivity scores further validated the inhibitory potential of these top hits. The identified compounds need further in vitro and in vivo validation to aid the treatment process of HBV.

Abstract
Worldwide Hepatitis B is known as one of the imperative causes of mortality and morbidity as well as occupational health hazard among health workers. Bangladesh is intermediate endemic country for Hepatitis B infection for which the government has introduced hepatitis B vaccination into the Expanded Programme on Immunization (EPI) nationwide since 2009 for new born children. However, the people who were born before 2009, was dependent on imported hepatitis B vaccine as there was no locally manufactured hepatitis B vaccine in Bangladesh. Hence, we conducted a randomized observer blinded non-inferiority clinical trial to assess the immunogenicity and safety of the locally manufactured Hepa-B vaccine in comparison with World Health Organization prequalified Engerix-B vaccine. Total 158 eligible adult participants were enrolled in this study with mean age of 30 and 29 years old in Hepa-B and Engerix-B groups, respectively. Both the vaccines were administered intramuscularly at 0, 1 and 6 months schedule. Baseline and post vaccination anti-HBs titers were measure at different time points. Seroconversion rate post three doses of Hepa-B vaccine was 98.67% similar to the comparator Engerix-B vaccine which was 100%. The geometric mean test ratios of both vaccines at all analysis time points were found > 0.5 predefined non-inferiority margin. Soreness at the injection site was the most common symptom for both the vaccines which resolved without any complication. No serious adverse event was reported throughout the study period. These results suggest that locally manufactured hepatitis B vaccine 'Hepa-B' vaccine is non-inferior to the well-known licensed 'Engerix-B' vaccine. ClinicalTrials.gov NCT03627507.

Abstract
Hepatitis B virus (HBV) pregenomic RNA (pgRNA) is a new biomarker that reflects HBV replication, but its relationship with natural killer (NK) cell immunity in chronic hepatitis B (CHB) is unknown. We assessed serum HBV pgRNA levels in 323 CHB patients by reverse transcription-polymerase chain reaction, assessed cytokine production and activation and inhibitory markers of NK cells by flow cytometry, and measured serum cytokines by enzyme-linked immunosorbent assays (ELISAs). Among the different CHB phases, the serum HBV pgRNA level was highest in the immune-tolerant (IT) and immune-active (IA) phases. Regarding NK and NKdim cells, HBV pgRNA was negatively associated with frequencies, but positively associated with NKp44 and NKp46 expression (activation markers). Regarding NKbright cells, serum HBV pgRNA was positively associated with frequency and programmed cell death protein 1 (PD1) expression (inhibitory marker), but negatively associated with NKp44 and NKp46. Serum HBV pgRNA was not associated with NKp30 (activation marker) on NK cells or subsets. Lastly, serum HBV pgRNA was positively correlated with the levels of serum IL-7 and IL-12P40 (NK cell-promoting cytokines) and negatively correlated with serum prostaglandin E2 (PGE2) level (which negatively regulates NK cells). In conclusion, we found varied relationships between serum HBV pgRNA and NK cells and subsets, indicating that HBV pgRNA may play a complicated role in NK cell-related immunity, providing new information on HBV and host immunity.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Sub-Saharan Africa continues with very low hepatitis B (HBV) birth dose vaccination coverage. To guide policy on HBV vaccine for newborns, we explored perceptions, barriers and preferences of pregnant women regarding HBV and the HBV birth dose vaccination. METHODS We conducted eight focus groups discussions (FGDs) among 70 pregnant women, stratified by rural-urban residence, age and education level, using a structured focus group discussion guide to explore birth dose awareness, perceptions, barriers and preferences. Data were transcribed, coded and analysed using framework analysis. RESULTS Perceptions related to HBV and liver cancer causes and prevention were diverse; most FGD participants did not perceive illnesses as distinctly different. Older women-groups, both urban and rural, had never heard about HBV, but were aware of liver cancer, viewing the disease as fatal. No FGD participants were aware of HBV birth dose. Concerns included vaccine safety, its availability to women who deliver outside the health system and mistrust in health-care worker (HCWs) when handling newborns. Rural-dwelling groups perceived absence of HBV services, while FGDs with young participants believed vaccine side-effects hampered birth dose planning. Most women-groups preferred (i) oral to injectable vaccines; (ii) receiving birth dose education during antenatal, to media-based education; (iii) that newborns receive the birth dose immediately after delivery in the mother's presence. CONCLUSION Although the birth dose is acceptable among pregnant women, planners need to continuously engage them as key stakeholders during planning to address concerns, in order to raise confidence, maximize uptake and strengthen HBV eradication efforts.

Abstract
Developing rapid, efficient, highly sensitive, simple, stable, and low-cost virus marker detection products that are appropriate for basic facilities is of great importance in the early diagnosis and treatment of viruses. Naked-eye detection methods are especially important when medical testing facilities are limited. Polystyrene nanospheres (PSs) with catalytic and specific recognition functions were successfully developed by simultaneously modifying catalase and goat anti-hepatitis B surface antibodies on nanospheres. The modified PSs contributed significantly to the amplification of the signal. Via the specific antigen-antibody reaction, the bifunctional nanospheres could be captured on microplate and then catalyzed the decomposition of hydrogen peroxide to reduce chloroauric acid and synthesize gold nanoparticles (AuNPs). Due to the surface plasmon resonance of AuNPs, the solution color change could be observed with the naked eye and the limit of detection (LOD) was 0.1 ng/mL. Furthermore, the LOD observed with instrumentation was 0.01 ng/mL, which meant that a rapid, efficient, and highly sensitive method for the detection of hepatitis B surface antigens was successfully developed, and neither complex sample pretreatment nor expensive equipment was needed.

Abstract
Background Hepatitis B virus (HBV) causes severe liver disease, such as hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC) and life-threatening liver disease. Hepatitis B virus infection is one of the most dominant public health problems these days. Therefore, this study aimed to determine the seroprevalence of HBV infection among patients attending Addis Alem Hospital, Bahir Dar, Northwest Ethiopia. Methods A retrospective study was conducted from January to February 2019 on HBV registered from January 2016 to December 2018 for three years period. The presence of HBsAg in serum was detected using the One Step Cassette Style HBsAg test kit. Data were analyzed using SPSS version 20. Descriptive statistics were used to describe the characteristics of participants with HBV infection. Statistical association of the determinants with HBV infection was determined by the X2 test. Results In this study, a total of 2010 participants of HBsAg rapid test records in the laboratory logbook were included. The median age of women was 25 years. The overall seroprevalence of HBsAg was 78 (3.9%). There was a general increment of HBV infection from 2016 to 2018, X2 =7.52; P=0.023. Age (X2 =8.19; P= 0.042) and sex (X2 =37.77; P <0.001) were associated with HBsAg positivity. Conclusion and Recommendations An intermediate seroprevalence of HBV infection was detected among participants in our study area. This figure raises significant public health concerns. Therefore, implementing strategies for routine screening of women for HBV and hospital attendants would be critical.

Abstract
Context: Hepatitis B serology is very important for both diagnosis and treatment of the diseases. However, evidence regarding the association between income and hepatitis B seroprevalence are not sufficient to make a definitive conclusion. Objectives: This meta-analysis aimed to investigate the association between income inequality and hepatitis B seroprevalence. Methods: We searched PubMed and Web of Science databases to identify all relevant epidemiological studies published up to February 10, 2020. A categorical meta-analysis was applied to pool risk effects of income on hepatitis B seroprevalence. Results: A total of 1525 pieces of literature related to income level and hepatitis B seroprevalence were retrieved, of which 10 articles were finally included. The results revealed a borderline risk (OR: 1.14, 95%CI: 1.00 - 1.30) for hepatitis B seroprevalence (positive for one or more seromarkers) among low-income groups. A significant income effect was observed for HBsAg seroprevalence with a 28% higher risk for low income versus high cases (OR: 1.28, 95%CI: 1.16 - 1.41). However, no statistically significant associations were found between seroprevalence of Anti-HBs, Anti-HBc, and income. Conclusions: This study demonstrated that low income may increase the risk of hepatitis B seroprevalence, especially for HBsAg seroprevalence. Programs on hepatitis B prevention should focus on those with low income. Further studies are warranted to establish causality.

Background Hepatitis B virus (HBV), Human Immunodeficiency virus (HIV) and Tuberculosis (TB) are common infections in South Africa. We utilized the opportunity of care provision for HIV-TB co-infected patients to better understand the relationship between these coinfections, determine the magnitude of the problem, and identify risk factors for HBV infection in HIV infected patients with and without TB in KwaZulu-Natal, South Africa. Methods This retrospective cohort analysis was undertaken in 2018. In-care HIV infected patients were included in the analysis. Results from clinical records were analysed to determine the prevalence, incidence, persistence and factors associated with HBsAg positivity in HIV-infected patients with or without TB co-infection. Results A total of 4292 HIV-infected patients with a mean age of 34.7 years (SD: 8.8) were included. Based on HBsAg positivity, the prevalence of HBV was 8.5% (363/4292) [95% confidence interval (CI): 7.7–9.3] at baseline and 9.4% (95%CI: 8.6–10.3%) at end of follow-up. The HBV incidence rate was 2.1/100 person-years (p-y). Risk of incident HBV infection was two-fold higher among male patients (HR 2.11; 95% CI: 1.14–3.92), while severe immunosuppression was associated with a greater than two-fold higher risk of persistent infection (adjusted risk ratio (RR) 2.54; 95% CI 1.06–6.14; p = 0.004. Additionally, active TB at enrolment was associated with a two-fold higher risk of incident HBV infection (aHR 2.38; 95% CI: 0.77–7.35). Conclusion The provision of HIV care and treatment in high HBV burden settings provide a missed opportunity for HBV screening, immunization and care provision.

Abstract
Hepatitis B virus (HBV), a major global health problem, can cause chronic hepatitis, liver cirrhosis, and hepatocellular carcinomas in chronically infected patients. However, before HBV infection can be adequately controlled, many mysteries about the HBV life cycle must be solved. In this study, TIMM29, an inner mitochondrial membrane protein, was identified as an interaction partner of the preS1 region of the HBV large S protein. The interaction was verified by both an immunoprecipitation with preS1 peptides and a GST-pulldown assay. Immunofluorescence studies also showed colocalization of preS1 and TIMM29. Moreover, it was determined that the preS1 bound with amino acids 92-189 of the TIMM29 protein. Infection of HBV in TIMM29-overexpressing NTCP/G2 cells resulted in a significant decrease of HBeAg and both extracellular particle-associated and core particle-associated HBV DNA without affecting cccDNA formation. Comparable results were obtained with TIMM29-overexpressing HB611 cells, which constitutively produce HBV. In contrast, knockout of TIMM29 in NTCP/G2 cells led to a higher production of HBV including HBeAg expression, as did knockout of TIMM29 in HB611. Collectively, these results suggested that TIMM29 interacts with the preS1 region of the HBV large S protein and modulates HBV amplification.

Abstract
Accumulating evidence suggests that hepatitis B virus (HBV) biological features may influence the course and clinical manifestations of infection and possibly the development of fulminant hepatitis (FH). Since HBV is not a cytocidal virus, virus-induced liver damage results from an interplay between the virus replication and the host's defense. Therefore, viral factors contributing to enhanced replication, induction of a stronger immune attack or apoptosis of hepatocytes could be crucial in development of FH. Numerous mutations in basal core promoter, pre-C, C and S regions of the HBV genome contribute to development of FH by different mechanisms, including enhanced viral replication, the loss of a decoy for immune response, unbalanced expression of viral proteins and retention of unprocessed cytotoxic proteins in hepatocytes.

Abstract
Chronic hepatitis B virus (HBV) infection caused by mother-to-child transmission (MTCT, also known as vertical transmission) during the perinatal period is a major public health problem worldwide. Despite the availability of the combined active-passive immunization with a hepatitis B vaccine and hepatitis B immunoglobulin after birth, about 9% of newborns are still infected with HBV, especially those born to hepatitis B e antigen (HBeAg)-positive mothers. Currently, the management of HBV infection during pregnancy remains controversial. This article briefly reviews the recent advances in the epidemiology of HBV, immunization against it, and management strategies in the third trimester.

Abstract
Increasing evidence indicates ATP1B3, one of the regulatory subunits of Na+ /K+ -ATPase, is involved in numerous viral propagations, such as HIV and EV71. However, the function and mechanism of ATP1B3 on hepatitis B virus (HBV) propagation is unknown. Here, we demonstrated that ATP1B3 overexpression reduced the quantity of hepatitis B surface antigen (HBsAg) and hepatitis B e antigen (HBeAg) in supernatants of HBV expression plasmids cotransfected HepG2 cells. Correspondingly, small interfering RNA and short hairpin RNA mediated ATP1B3 silencing promoted HBsAg and HBeAg expression in the supernatants of HBV expression plasmids transfected HepG2 cells. Mechanically, we reported that ATP1B3 expression could activate nuclear factor-κB (NF-κB) pathway by inducing the expression, phosphorylation, and nuclear import of P65 for the first time. And NF-κB inhibitor (Bay11) impaired the restraint of ATP1B3 on HBV replication. This counteraction effect of Bay11 proved that ATP1B3-induced NF-κB activation was crucial for HBV restriction. Accordingly, we observed that anti-HBV factors interferon-α (IFN-α) and interleukin-6 (IL-6) production were increased in HepG2 cells after the NF-κB activation. It suggested that ATP1B3 suppressed HBsAg and HBeAg by NF-κB/IFN-α and NF-κB/IL-6 axis. Further experiments proved that ATP1B3 overexpression induced anti-HBV factor BST-2 expression by NF-κB/IFN-α axis in HepG2 cells but not HEK293T cells, and ATP1B3 silencing downregulated BST-2 messenger RNA level in HepG2 cells. As an HBV restriction factor, BST-2 cooperated with ATP1B3 to antagonize HBsAg but not HBeAg in HepG2 cells. Our work identified ATP1B3 as a novel candidate of HBV restrictor with unrevealed mechanism and we highlighted it might serve as a potential therapeutic molecule for HBV infection.

Abstract
This study is aimed to investigate whether calpain 2 (CAPN2) serves as an indicator of the hepatitis B virus (HBV) to induce hepatic fibrosis. Differentially-expressed genes (DEGs) in HBV-induced hepatic fibrosis and normal liver tissues were analyzed, and signal pathway which was analyzed by the Kyoto Encyclopedia of Genes and Genomes (KEGG) analysis using DEGs. Next, the gene-related network map was constructed using the Search Tool for the Retrieval of Interacting Genes. Moreover, CAPN2 protein expression, level of hepatic fibrosis, CAPN2 messenger RNA level, and protein levels of CAPN2, a-SAM, COL3A1, COL1A1, and MAPK1 were determined using Immunohistochemistry (IHC), hematoxylin and eosin, RT-qPCR, and western blot (WB), respectively. There were 420 DEGs screened in HBV-induced hepatic fibrosis and normal liver tissues, among which, 373 were significantly upregulated and 47 were obviously downregulated. KEGG analysis showed that the upregulated DEGs were mainly concentrated in extracellular matrix-receptor interaction, protein digestion, and absorption signaling pathways. The network diagram analysis showed that the DEGs, such as CAPN2, ITGAV, and CCR2, play the key role in the DEG network map, and CAPN2 related to hepatic fibrosis via MAPK1. The increased CAPN2 expression and obvious hepatic fibrosis was displayed in the HBV-induced hepatic fibrosis tissues. In addition, HBV could induce CAPN2 expression, and the interference of CAPN2 could inhibit the expression of hepatic fibrosis markers, including a-SAM, COL3A1, COL1A1, and MAPK1. CAPN2 is regarded as a biomarker of hepatic fibrosis induced by HBV.

Abstract
We aimed to identify key genes and pathways associated with different immune statuses of hepatitis B virus (HBV) infection. The gene expression and DNA methylation profiles were analysed in different immune statuses of HBV infection. Differentially expressed genes (DEGs) and differentially methylated genes (DMGs) were identified, followed by their functional and integrative analyses. The differential expression of IgG Fc receptors (FcγRs) in chronic HBV-infected patients and immune cells during different stages of HBV infection was investigated. Toll-like receptor (TLR) signalling pathway (including TLR6) and leucocyte transendothelial migration pathway (including integrin subunit beta 1) were enriched during acute infection. Key DEGs, such as FcγR Ib and FcγR Ia, and interferon-alpha inducible protein 27 showed correlation with alanine aminotransferase levels, and they were differentially expressed between acute and immune-tolerant phases and between immune-tolerant and immune-clearance phases. The integrative analysis of DNA methylation profile showed that lowly methylated and highly expressed genes, including cytotoxic T lymphocyte-associated protein 4 and mitogen-activated protein kinase 3 were enriched in T cell receptor signalling pathway during acute infection. Highly methylated and lowly expressed genes, such as Ras association domain family member 1 and cyclin-dependent kinase inhibitor 2A were identified in chronic infection. Furthermore, differentially expressed FcγR Ia, FcγR IIa and FcγR IIb, CD3- CD56+ CD16+ natural killer cells and CD14high CD16+ monocytes were identified between immune-tolerant and immune-clearance phases by experimental validation. The above genes and pathways may be used to distinguish different immune statuses of HBV infection.

Abstract
Hepatitis B virus (HBV) infection and alcoholism are major public health problems worldwide, contributing to the development of end-stage liver disease. Alcohol intake affects HBV infection pathogenesis and treatment outcomes. HBV-specific cytotoxic T lymphocytes (CTLs) play an important role in HBV clearance. Many previous studies have focused on alcohol-induced impairments of the immune response. However, it is not clear whether alcohol alters the presentation of HBV peptide-major histocompatibility complex (MHC) class I complexes on infected hepatocytes resulting in escape of its recognition by CTLs. Hence, the focus of this study was to investigate the mechanisms by which ethanol metabolism affects the presentation of CTL epitope on HBV-infected hepatocytes. As demonstrated here, although continuous cell exposure to acetaldehyde-generating system (AGS) increased HBV load in HepG2.2.15 cells, it decreased the expression of HBV core peptide 18-27-human leukocyte antigen-A2complex (CTL epitope) on the cell surface. Moreover, we observed AGS-induced suppression of chymotrypsin- and trypsin-like proteasome activities necessary for peptide processing by proteasome as well as a decline in IFNγ-stimulated immunoproteasome (IPR) function and expression of PA28 activator and immunoproteasome subunits LMP7 and LMP2. Furthermore, IFNγ-induced activation of peptide-loading complex (PLC) components, such as transporter associated with antigen processing (TAP1) and tapasin, were suppressed by AGS. The attenuation of IPR and PLC activation was attributed to AGS-triggered impairment of IFNγ signaling in HepG2.2.15 cells. Collectively, all these downstream events reduced the display of HBV peptide-MHC class I complexes on the hepatocyte surface, which may suppress CTL activation and the recognition of CTL epitopes on HBV-expressing hepatocytes by immune cells, thereby leading to persistence of liver inflammation.NEW & NOTEWORTHY Our study shows that in HBV-expressing HepG2.2.15 cells, acetaldehyde alters HBV peptide processing by suppressing chymotrypsin- and trypsin-like proteasome activities and decreases IFNγ-stimulated immunoproteasome function and expression of PA28 activator and immunoproteasome subunits. It also suppresses IFNγ-induced activation of peptide-loading complex (PLC) components due to impairment of IFNγ signaling via the JAK-STAT1 pathway. These acetaldehyde-induced dysfunctions reduced the display of HBV peptide-MHC class I complexes on the hepatocyte surface, thereby leading to persistence of HBV infection.

Abstract
BACKGROUND: The effect of age and gender on the transmission of any infectious disease can be of great important because the age at which the host contact the disease may be a determinant on the rate at which the disease will spread. AIM: The purpose of this research is to model the significant effect of age and gender on the spread of hepatitis B virus using data collected from Lagos State, Nigeria. MATERIAL AND METHODS: The data that was used for this research is a ten years data covering the period of 2006 to 2015, which was collected from Nigeria Institute of Medical Research (NIMR). A log-linear modelling approach was employed using R programming language software. Akaike Information Criterion (AIC) method of model selection was used in selecting the best model. RESULTS: It was discovered from the analysis that both factors (age and gender) have a significant effect on the spread of hepatitis B infection. This means that the age at which an individual is tested positive to hepatitis B virus will affect the spread of the disease. In choosing the best model among the four models that were developed, model AY: GY (age & year: gender and year) was found to be the best model. CONCLUSION: Age and gender were found to act as a risk influencer that could have a great effect on the transmission of hepatitis B virus infections in Lagos state, Nigeria.

Abstract
Reactivation of hepatitis B virus (HBV) replication is characterized by increased HBV-DNA serum values of about 1 log or by HBV DNA turning positive if previously undetectable in serum, possibly associated with liver damage and seldom life-threatening. Due to HBV reactivation, hepatitis B surface antigen (HBsAg)-negative/anti-HBc-positive subjects may revert to HBsAg-positive. In patients with hemo-lymphoproliferative disease, the frequency of HBV reactivation depends on the type of lymphoproliferative disorder, the individual's HBV serological status and the potency and duration of immunosuppression. In particular, it occurs in 10%-50% of the HBsAg-positive and in 2%-25% of the HBsAg- negative/anti-HBc-positive, the highest incidences being registered in patients receiving rituximab-based therapy. HBV reactivation can be prevented by accurate screening of patients at risk and by a pharmacological prophylaxis with anti-HBV nucleo(t)sides starting 2-3 wk before the beginning of immunosuppressive treatment and covering the entire period of administration of immunosuppressive drugs and a long subsequent period, the duration of which depends substantially on the degree of immunodepression achieved. Patients with significant HBV replication before immunosuppressive therapy should receive anti-HBV nucleo(t)sides as a long-term (may be life-long) treatment. This review article is mainly directed to doctors engaged every day in the treatment of patients with onco-lymphoproliferative diseases, so that they can broaden their knowledge on HBV infection and on its reactivation induced by the drugs with high immunosuppressive potential that they use in the care of their patients.

Abstract
Hepatitis B viral (HBV) reactivation in the immunosuppressed is a significant problem even in patients who have achieved serological clearance due to the persistence of HBV as cccDNA. HBV reactivation will continue to pose a significant healthcare burden given the high prevalence of HBV and increasing use of immunosuppressants. Screening of hepatitis B surface antigen, antibody to Hepatitis B core antigen antibody and HBV DNA levels should be done routinely in all patients planned for significant immunosuppressant use. We aimed to examine the factors affecting reactivation risk. This depended on HBV disease status, the underlying disease requiring immunosuppression, and the specific immunosuppressive regime. While antiviral prophylaxis can prevent reactivation, it increases cost and still has risk of delayed reactivation after stopping antivirals and close follow-up and on-demand treatment is a good alternative for patients at risk of reactivation.

Abstract
Hepatitis B virus (HBV) vaccination is regarded as the most economical and effective method for the prevention and control of HBV infection, a major global health problem. Previous studies have suggested that there may be sex‑specific differences regarding the immune response to the HBV vaccine in humans; however, the mechanisms associated with these sex‑specific differences are yet to be elucidated. In the present study, sex‑based immunological differences in mice following HBV vaccination were investigated to determine the mechanisms underlying sexual dimorphism, with the aim of identifying potential targets for clinical intervention. Balb/c mice (n=6) were vaccinated intramuscularly on 3 different days (days 0, 14 and 28) with the HBV vaccine. Sera were analyzed via ELISA for the presence of HBV surface antigen (HBsAg)‑specific immunoglobulin G (IgG), and of different IgG subtypes, 3 weeks following the third injection. Enzyme‑linked immunosorbent spot assays were conducted to determine interleukin‑4/interferon‑γ secretion. Immunological memory stimulated by the vaccine was detected via flow cytometry analysis and ELISA 1 week following the booster immunization. The seroconversion of the treated female group was higher compared with the male group at one week following the second vaccination. Female mice exhibited significantly increased HBsAg antibody titers compared with males at 1‑5 weeks following the third vaccination. Sera obtained from vaccinated female mice exhibited markedly increased titers of IgG1 and IgG2b compared with those from male mice. Furthermore, female mice exhibited elevated cytotoxic T lymphocyte responses and immune memory. Collectively, the results of the present study indicated that sex‑based immunological differences affected the dynamics and characteristics of the immune response in mice immunized with the HBV vaccine.

Vaginal delivery and HBV mother to child transmission risk after immunoprophylaxis: A systematic review and a meta-analysis. Midwifery 2019; 74:116-125. Abstract
OBJECTIVE HBV mother to child transmission (MTCT) can be prevented by passive and active immunoprophylaxis. In this study, we aim to assess whether vaginal delivery is safe for HBV MTCT after immunoprophylaxis. MATERIAL AND METHODS PubMed and Web of Science were systematically searched. We compared the MTCT incidence of infants at 6 months or older between vaginal delivery and caesarean section. Serological HBV positive incidences for newborns at birth were also compared. RESULTS Eighteen studies with 11,446 mother-child pairs were included in the meta-analysis. The average incidence of serological HBV positive for newborns at birth was 7.2% in the cesarean section group, and 16.6% in the vaginal delivery group. The summary odds ratio (OR) was 0.499 (95% CI 0.364-0.684; Z = 4.33, P < 0.00001) between two groups. However, the average incidences of MTCT were 3.3% and 4.1% for the cesarean section group and the vaginal delivery group, respectively. The summary OR compared between two groups was 0.790 (95% CI 0.614 to 1.016; Z = 1.83, P = 0.067). The funnel plot, Begg's Test (z = -0.55, P = 0.583) and Egger's test (t = -0.29, P = 0.777) suggested there was no publication bias among the included studies. Sensitive analyze showed the ORs were 0.764 (95% CI 0.490 to 1.192; Z = 1.19, P = 0.236), and 0.386 (95% CI 0.132 to 1.125; Z = 1.74, P = 0.0081), respectively. CONCLUSION The vaginal delivery did not increase the HBV MTCT incidence after immunoprophylaxis at 6 months old or more. The existing evidence does not support the conclusion that caesarean section can prevent MTCT in HBsAg-positive mother after immunoprophylaxis. However, this conclusion should be cautious in the HBV mother with high viral load.

Abstract
Cigarette smoking and alcohol consumption can be considered as risk factors that increase the progression of chronic liver disease. Meanwhile, unprotected sex is one of the main causes of hepatitis B infection. This study aimed to explore drinking, smoking, and risky sexual behaviors among people with chronic hepatitis B virus (HBV) in a Vietnamese urban setting, as well as investigating potential associated factors. A cross-sectional study was performed in October 2018 in Viet-Tiep Hospital, Hai Phong, Vietnam. A total of 298 patients who had been diagnosed with chronic hepatitis B reported their smoking status, alcohol use, and sexual risk behavior in the last 12 months. A multivariate logistic regression model was used to identify the associated factors. It was identified that 82.5% of participants never used alcohol. The Alcohol Use Disorders Identification Test-Consumption (AUDIT-C) positive result among male patients was 7.4% (0% in female patients). In addition, 14.5% of participants were current smokers and the mean number of cigarettes per day was 7.4 (SD = 3.4). It was found that 35.4% of male patients had sex with two or more sex partners. Furthermore, 66.7% and 74.1% of participants used condoms when having sex with casual partners/one-night stands and sex workers, respectively. There was a positive correlation between monthly drinking and currently smoking. White-collar workers were less likely to have multiple sex partners within the last 12 months. Our study highlights the need for integrating counseling sessions and educational programs with treatment services.

Abstract
Steviosides, rebaudiosides and their analogues constitute a major class of naturally occurring biologically active diterpene compounds. The wide spectrum of pharmacological activity of this group of compounds has developed an interest among medicinal chemists to synthesize, purify, and analyze more selective and potent isosteviol derivatives. It has potential biological applications and improves the field of medicinal chemistry by designing novel drugs with the ability to cope against resistance developing diseases. The outstanding advancement in the design and synthesis of isosteviol and its derivative has proved its effectiveness and importance in the field of medicinal chemical research. The present review is an effort to integrate recently developed novel drugs syntheses from isosteviol and potentially active pharmacological importance of the isosteviol derivatives covering the recent advances.

Abstract
The liver is the most essential organ of the body performing vital functions. Hepatic disorders affect the physiological and biochemical functions of the body. These disorders include hepatitis B, hepatitis C, alcoholic liver disease (ALD), nonalcoholic fatty liver disease (NAFLD), liver cirrhosis, hepatic failure and hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC). Drugs related hepatotoxicity is one of the major challenges facing by clinicians as it is a leading cause of liver failure. During post-marketing surveillance studies, detection and reporting of drug-induced hepatotoxicity may lead to drug withdrawal or warnings. Several mechanisms are involved in hepatotoxicity such as cell membrane disruption, initiating an immune response, alteration of cellular pathways of drug metabolism, accumulation of reactive oxygen species (ROS), lipid peroxidation and cell death. Curcumin, the active ingredient of turmeric and exhibits therapeutic potential for the treatment of diabetes, cardiovascular disorders and various types of cancers. Curcumin is strong anti-oxidant and anti-inflammatory effects and thus it possesses hepatoprotective properties. Despite its low bioavailability, its hepatoprotective effects have been studied in various protocols of hepatotoxicity including acetaminophen, alcohol, lindane, carbon tetrachloride (CCL4), diethylnitrosamine and heavy metals induced hepatotoxicities. This report reviews the hepatoprotective effects of curcumin with a focus on its mechanistic insights in various hepatotoxic protocols.

Abstract
Background Hospitalization expenditure of genitourinary system diseases among the aged is often overlooked. The aim of our research is to analyze the basic situation and influencing factors of hospitalization expenditure of the genitourinary system diseases and provide better data for the health system. Methods A total of 1 377 681 patients aged 65 years and over were collected with multistage stratified cluster random sampling in 252 medical institutions in Liaoning China, and “System of Health Account 2011” (SHA2011) was conducted to analyze the expenditure of the diseases. The corresponding samples were extracted, the neural network model was utilized to fit the regression model of the diseases among the aged, and sensitivity analysis was used to rank the influencing factors. Results Total hospitalization expenditure in Liaoning was 51.286 billion yuan, and curative care expenditure of diseases of the genitourinary system was 3.350 billion yuan, accounting for 6.53%. In the neural network model, the training set of R2 was 0.71. The test set of R2 was 0.74. In the sensitivity analysis, top-three influencing factors were the length of stay, type of institutions and type of insurances; the weight was 0.28, 0.19 and 0.14, respectively. Conclusions This research used SHA2011 to grab a large amount of data and analyzed them depending upon the corresponding dimensions. The neural network can analyze the influencing factors of hospitalization expenditure of genitourinary diseases in elderly patients accurately and directly, and can clearly describe the extent of its impact by combining sensitivity analysis.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Hepatitis B virus (HBV) infection leads to hepatic and extrahepatic manifestations including chronic kidney disease (CKD). However, the association between HBV and CKD is not clear. This study investigated the association between chronic HBV infection and CKD in a nationwide multicenter study. METHODS A total of 265,086 subjects who underwent health-check examinations in 33 hospitals from January 2015 to December 2015 were enrolled. HBV surface antigen (HBsAg) positive cases (n = 10,048), and age- and gender-matched HBsAg negative controls (n = 40,192) were identified. CKD was defined as a glomerular filtration rate (GFR) < 60 mL/min/1.73 m2 or proteinuria as at least grade 2+ of urine protein. RESULTS HBsAg positive cases showed a significantly higher prevalence of GFR < 60 mL/min/1.73 m2 (3.3%), and proteinuria (18.9%) than that of the controls (2.6%, P < 0.001, and 14.1%, P < 0.001, respectively). In the multivariate analysis, HBsAg positivity was an independent factor associated with GFR < 60 mL/min/1.73 m2 along with age, blood levels of albumin, bilirubin, anemia, and hemoglobin A1c (HbA1c). Likewise, HBsAg positivity was an independent factor for proteinuria along with age, male, blood levels of bilirubin, protein, albumin, and HbA1c. A subgroup analysis showed that HBsAg positive men but not women had a significantly increased risk for GFR < 60 mL/min/1.73 m2. CONCLUSION Chronic HBV infection was significantly associated with a GFR < 60 mL/min/1.73 m2 and proteinuria (≥ 2+). Therefore, clinical concern about CKD in chronic HBV infected patients, especially in male, is warranted.

Abstract
Liver regeneration after partial hepatectomy (PH) is a highly orchestrated biological process in which synchronized hepatocyte proliferation is induced after massive liver mass loss. Hepatocyte proliferation could be regulated by multiple signals, such as miRNAs and autophagy, but underlying mechanism remains unclear. Here a functional miRNA during liver regeneration was identified and its underlying mechanism was delineated in vitro and in vivo. We found that miR-1907 was highly upregulated during liver regeneration after 2/3 PH at various timepoints. The level of miR-1907 was also increased in normal liver cell line treated with HGF at different concentrations. Functionally, miR-1907 enhanced hepatocyte proliferation in vitro and in vivo, and the liver/body weight ratio in miR-1907-overexpressed mice was significantly higher in comparison to the control mice after 2/3 PH. Forced expression of miR-1907 promoted autophagy activation of hepatocyte. Importantly, autophagy inhibition significantly attenuated miR-1907-induced hepatocyte proliferation and the liver/body weight ratio. Finally, GSK3β, a suppressor of autophagy signaling, was identified as the direct target gene of miR-1907. Taken together, miR-1907 accelerates hepatocyte proliferation during liver regeneration by activating autophagy; thus pharmacological intervention regulating miR-1907/autophagy axis may be therapeutically beneficial in liver transplantation and liver failure by inducing liver regeneration.

Abstract
Hepatitis B virus (HBV) infectious diseases currently remain incurable due to limitations of conventional antivirals such as incapability of eradicating HBV DNA, prolonged use, drug resistance, and virological relapse. KCT-01, a 30% ethanol extract consisting of Artemisia capillaris, Sanguisorba officinalis, and Curcuma longa, was newly developed. The objective of this study was to investigate pharmacological activities of KCT-01 against HBV using HepG2.2.15 cells and a hydrodynamic injection model. KCT-01 significantly lowered antigen secretion, virion production, and pgRNA synthesis in HepG2.2.15 cells without affecting cell viability. KCT-01 administration also resulted in significant decrease of serum virion production, liver covalently closed circular (ccc) DNA levels, and mRNA synthesis of cytokines in the liver of mice injected with HBV DNA hydrodynamically. Interestingly, coadministration of KCT-01 with entecavir enhanced its in vitro and in vivo antiviral activities. Moreover, safety of KCT-01 was assured up to 5000 mg/kg in rats in both single and repeated-dose preclinical studies. Taken together, our findings demonstrate that KCT-01 is capable of suppressing HBV replication and inflammatory cytokine production in in vitro and in vivo models without showing toxicity, suggesting the potential of using KCT-01 alone or in combination with entecavir as antiviral agent.

Abstract
Hepatitis C virus (HCV) is known to inhibit hepatitis B virus (HBV) replication in patients with HBV/HCV coinfection. Reactivation of HBV in patients treated for HCV with direct-acting agents (DAAs) has emerged recently as an important clinical consideration. A growing number of case reports and case series support the association between new HCV treatments and HBV reactivation. Yet, very little is known about the specific viral characteristics that facilitate reactivation as functional characterization of the reactivated HBV has been conducted only rarely. This review provides the most recent data on HBV reactivation in the context of DAA initiation and highlights the existing viral genomic data from reactivating viruses. Current functional studies of HBV reactivation are largely limited by the retrospective identification of cases, no standardization of genomic regions that are studied with respect to HBV reactivation, and the lack of inclusion of nonreactivating controls to establish specific viral mutations that are associated with HBV reactivation. Importantly, none of these sequencing studies included cases of HBV reactivation after initiation of DAAs. While new HCV treatments have revolutionized care for HCV infected patients, HBV reactivation will likely increase in frequency, as DAAs are more commonly prescribed. Pretreatment determination of HBV status and thoughtful management of HBV coinfections will be necessary and lead to improved patient safety and yield optimal treatment results.

Abstract
Autophagy signaling pathway is involved in cellular homeostasis, developmental processes, cellular stress responses, and immune pathways. The aim of this review is to summarize the relationship between autophagy and viruses. It is not possible to be fully comprehensive, or to provide a complete "overview of all viruses". In this review, we will focus on the interaction of autophagy and viruses and survey how human viruses exploit multiple steps in the autophagy pathway to help viral propagation and escape immune response. We discuss the role that macroautophagy plays in cells infected with hepatitis C virus, hepatitis B virus, rotavirus gastroenteritis, immune cells infected with human immunodeficiency virus, and viral respiratory tract infections both influenza virus and coronavirus.

Abstract
Hepatitis B virus (HBV) infection represents the most common cause of chronic liver diseases worldwide. Consequently, to the introduction of the universal HBV vaccination program, the prevalence of hepatitis B surface antigen was markedly reduced and less than 1% of the population of Western Europe and North America is chronically infected. To date, despite great advances in therapeutics, HBV chronic infection is considered an incurable disease. Ten hepatitis B virus genotypes (A-J) and several subgenotypes have been identified so far, based on intergroup divergences of 8% and 4%, respectively, in the complete viral genome. HBV-D genotype has been found throughout the world, with highest prevalence in the Mediterranean area. In the present review, several articles concerning HBV epidemiology, and phylogeny in Italy have been analyzed, mainly focusing on the changes occurred in the last decade.
