Pharmaceuticals of Emerging Concern in Aquatic Systems: Chemistry, Occurrence, Effects, and Removal Methods

Occurrence and risks of pharmaceuticals, personal care products, and endocrine-disrupting compounds in Chinese surface waters

The continuous and rapid increase of chemical pollution in surface waters has become a pressing and widely recognized global concern. As emerging contaminants (ECs) in surface waters, pharmaceutical and personal care products (PPCPs), and endocrine-disrupting compounds (EDCs) have attracted considerable attention due to their wide occurrence and potential threat to human health. Therefore, a comprehensive understanding of the occurrence and risks of ECs in Chinese surface waters is urgently required. This study summarizes and assesses the environmental occurrence concentrations and ecological risks of 42 pharmaceuticals, 15 personal care products (PCPs), and 20 EDCs frequently detected in Chinese surface waters. The ECs were primarily detected in China's densely populated and highly industrialized regions. Most detected PPCPs and EDCs had concentrations between ng/L to µg/L, whereas norfloxacin, caffeine, and erythromycin had relatively high contamination levels, even exceeding 2000 ng/L. Risk evaluation based on the risk quotient method revealed that 34 PPCPs and EDCs in Chinese surface waters did not pose a significant risk, whereas 4-nonylphenol, 4-tert-octylphenol, 17α-ethinyl estradiol, 17β-estradiol, and triclocarban did. This review provides a comprehensive summary of the occurrence and associated hazards of typical PPCPs and EDCs in Chinese surface waters over the past decade, and will aid in the regulation and control of these ECs in Chinese surface waters.

Environmental risk assessment of pharmaceuticals in wastewaters and reclaimed water from catalan main river basins

Aquatic pollution from pharmaceuticals is a growing environmental concern globally, particularly in Catalonia's primary water bodies, the Llobregat and Besòs rivers. This study investigates pharmaceutical residues in reclaimed water effluents from the Llobregat River and a wastewater treatment plant (WWTP) in the Besòs River, critical contributors to the region's water resources. Employing LC-MS/MS, 85 pharmaceutical residues were monitored, revealing elevated concentrations of tramadol, losartan, and gemfibrozil, commonly prescribed drugs in Catalonia. Surprisingly, downstream concentrations exceeded upstream levels significantly, indicating the adverse impact of reclaimed water on water quality. Furthermore, evaluation of WWTP efficiency displayed varying removal rates, from 10 % to 99.8 %, highlighting treatment inadequacies for certain compounds. Predictive environmental concentrations (PECs) aligned closely with measured values, affirming the utility of predictive models in early-stage research. Risk assessment via the risk quotient (RQ) method identified atorvastatin and chlorpromazine as surpassing toxicity thresholds. This study underscores the urgent need to address pharmaceutical contamination in urban rivers and reclaimed waters in Catalonia. By highlighting treatment inefficacies and potential ecological risks, it contributes to the development of sustainable water management strategies and environmental conservation efforts in the region. Efforts should focus on continuously monitoring specific compounds, evaluating their individual toxicity, and implementing appropriate remediation techniques in WWTPs to safeguard water quality and aquatic ecosystems.

Occurrence of emerging contaminants in three river basins impacted by wastewater treatment plant effluents: Spatio-seasonal patterns and environmental risk assessment

The concern on the fate and distribution of contaminants of emerging concern (CECs) is a burning topic due to their widespread occurrence and potential harmful effects. Particularly, antibiotics have received great attention due to their implications in antimicrobial resistance occurrence. The impact of wastewater treatment plants (WWTP) is remarkable, being one of the main pathways for the introduction of CECs into aquatic systems. The combination of novel analytical methodologies and risk assessment strategies is a promising tool to find out environmentally relevant compounds posing major concerns in freshwater ecosystems impacted by those wastewater effluents. Within this context, a multi-target approach was applied in three Spanish river basins affected by different WWTP treated effluents for spatio-temporal monitoring of their chemical status. Solid phase extraction followed by ultra-high-performance liquid chromatography were used for the quantification of a large panel of compounds (n = 270), including pharmaceuticals and other consumer products, pesticides and industrial chemicals. To this end, water samples were collected in four sampling campaigns at three locations in each basin: (i) upstream from the WWTPs; (ii) WWTP effluent discharge points (effluent outfall); and (iii) downstream from the WWTPs (500 m downriver from the effluent outfall). Likewise, 24-h composite effluent samples from each of the WWTPs were provided in all sampling periods. First the occurrence and distribution of these compounds were assessed. Diverse seasonal trends were observed depending on the group of emerging compounds, though COVID-19 outbreak affected variations of certain pharmaceuticals. Detection frequencies and concentrations in effluents generally exceeded those in river samples and concentrations measured upstream WWTPs were generally low or non-quantifiable. Finally, risks associated with maximum contamination levels were evaluated using two different approaches to account for antibiotic resistance selection as well. From all studied compounds, 89 evidenced environmental risk on at least one occasion in this study.

Metabolomic study on ostracods exposed to environmentally relevant concentrations of five pharmaceuticals selected via a novel approach

Pharmaceuticals (PhACs) are increasingly detected in aquatic ecosystems, yet their effects on biota remain largely unknown. The environmentally relevant concentrations of many PhACs may not result in individual-level responses, like mortality or growth inhibition, traditional toxicity endpoints. However, this doesn't imply the absence of negative effects on biota. Metabolomics offers a more sensitive approach, detecting responses at molecular and cellular levels and providing mechanistic understanding of adverse effects. We evaluated bioaccumulation and metabolic alterations in a benthic ostracod, Heterocypris incongruens, exposed to a mixture of five PhACs (carbamazepine, tiapride, tolperisone, propranolol and amlodipine) at environmentally relevant concentrations for 7 days using liquid chromatography coupled with mass spectrometry. The selection of PhACs was based, among other factors, on risk quotient values determined using toxicological data available in the literature and concentrations of PhACs quantified in our previous research in the sediments of the Odra River estuary. This represents a novel approach to PhACs selection for metabolomic studies that considers strictly quantitative data. Amlodipine and tolperisone exhibited the highest bioaccumulation. Significant impacts were observed in Alanine, aspartate and glutamate metabolism, Starch and sucrose metabolism, Arginine biosynthesis, Histidine metabolism, Tryptophan metabolism, Glycerophospholipid metabolism, and Glutathione metabolism pathways. Most of the below-individual-level responses were likely nonspecific and related to dysregulation in energy metabolism and oxidative stress response. Additionally, some pharmaceutical-specific responses were also observed. Therefore, untargeted metabolomics can be used to detect metabolic changes resulting from environmentally relevant concentrations of PhACs in aquatic ecosystems and to understand their underlying mechanism.

Monitoring iohexol and its transformation products as evidence of reclaimed water irrigation input to contiguous waterbodies

Irrigation with reclaimed water alleviates water supply shortages, but excess application often results in impairment of contiguous waterbodies. This project investigated the potential use of iohexol, an iodinated contrast media used in medical imaging, together with its bio- and phototransformation products as unique reconnaissance markers of reclaimed water irrigation intrusion at three golf courses within the state of Florida. Inter-facility iohexol concentrations measured in reclaimed waters ranged over ~2 orders of magnitude while observed intra-facility seasonal differences were ≤1 order of magnitude. A ~50 % reduction in iohexol was observed post-disinfection for reclaimed water facilities utilizing UV light while none was observed with use of chlorine. Iohexol biotransformation products were observed to decline or shift to lower molecular weight compounds when exposed to UV light but not during disinfection using chlorine. Iohexol biotransformation products were observed in most of the samples but were more prevalent in samples collected during the dry season. Much fewer iohexol phototransformation products were observed in chlorinated reclaimed water, and they were only observed in UV light irradiated reclaimed water when the pre-disinfectant iohexol concentration was ≥5000 ng/L or from solar exposure of reclaimed water spiked with 10 μM of iohexol. For the Hillsborough golf course overlaying an aquifer, the groundwater did not contain iohexol or phototransformation products but did contain biotransformation products. It is not known if these biotransformation products are from active or historical intrusion. The additional presence of sucralose in the aquifer suggests that intrusion has occurred within the past 3 years. This study demonstrates three crucial points in attempting to utilize iohexol to denote reclaimed water intrusion from irrigation overapplication: (1) interpretable results are obtained when iohexol concentrations in the reclaimed water employed for irrigation are ≥1000 ng/L, with higher concentrations in the range of ≥5000 ng/L better able to meet analytical sensitivity requirements after further dilution or degradation in the environment; (2) it is beneficial to assess iohexol transformation products in tandem with iohexol monitoring to account for environmental transformations of iohexol during storage and transport to the receiving water of concern; and (3) inclusion of monitoring for sucralose, an artificial sweetener ubiquitous in wastewater sources that is comparatively stable in the environment, can aid in interpretating whether reclaimed water intrusion based on identification of iohexol and transformation products in the receiving water is attributable to historic or ongoing irrigation overapplications.

Biochar mitigates the postponed bioavailability and toxicity of phthalic acid esters in the soil

Observed nowadays wide pollution of the environment with microplastic and phthalic acid esters (PAEs) (such as dimethyl phthalate, DMP; diethyl phthalate, DEP; dibutyl phthalate, DBP; benzyl butyl phthalate, BBP; di-(2-ethylhexyl) phthalate, DEHP and di-n-octyl phthalate, DNOP) is a result of their increased production and usage. Weak bonding with polymer matrix enables their easier mobilization in the environment and increased bioavailability. The aim of the presented studies was the estimation of the fate of six priority PAEs in the soil-vegetable system and the application of biochar to immobilize PAEs in the soil preventing their bioavailability to lettuce. Both the acute (one full lettuce development period) and prolongated effect (lettuce cultivated after 10 weeks from the first PAEs contamination) were estimated to examine the long-time exposure under crop rotation. The addition of 1 % of corn-derived biochar immobilized PAEs in the soil efficiently (up to 4 times increased concentration) with the following order: DBP < DEP < DMP < DEHP < DNOP < BBP. Bioavailable PAEs were determined in lettuce roots (DMP, BBP, DEHP), and lettuce leaves (DEP, DBP, DNOP) but the presence of biochar lowered their content. PAEs, although not available for lettuce, were available for other organisms, confirming that the bioavailability or lack of nutrients is of great importance in PAEs-polluted soil. In long-time experiments, without biochar amendment, all PAEs were 3-12 times more bioavailable and were mainly accumulated in lettuce roots. The biochar addition significantly reduces (1.5-11 times) PAEs bioavailability over time. However, the PAEs content in roots remained significantly higher in samples with crop rotation compared to samples where only lettuce was grown. The results confirmed that biochar addition to the soil reduces their bioavailability and mobility inside the plant, limiting their transport from roots to leaves and reducing the exposure risk but confirming that lettuce leaves may be a safe food when cultivated in PAEs-polluted soil.

Origin, types, and contribution of emerging pollutants to environmental degradation and their remediation by physical and chemical techniques

The growing presence of emerging pollutants (EPs) in aquatic environments, as well as their harmful impacts on the biosphere and humans, has become a global concern. Recent developments and advancements in pharmaceuticals, agricultural practices, industrial activities, and human personal care substances have paved the way for drastic changes in EP concentrations and impacts on the ecosystem. As a result, it is critical to mitigate EP's harmful effects before they jeopardize the ecological equilibrium of the overall ecosystem and the sustainable existence of life on Earth. This review comprehensively documented the types, origins, and remediation strategies of EPs, and underscored the significance of this study in the current context. We briefly stated the major classification of EPs based on their organic and inorganic nature. Furthermore, this review systematically evaluates the occurrence of EPs due to the fast-changing ecological scenarios and their impact on human health. Recent studies have critically discussed the emerging physical and chemical processes for EP removal, highlighting the limitations of conventional remediation technologies. We reviewed and presented the challenges associated with EP remediation and degradation using several methods, including physical and chemical methods, with the application of recent technologies. The EP types and various methods discussed in this review help the researchers understand the nature of present-day EPs and utilize an efficient method of choice for EP removal and management in the future for sustainable life and development activities on the planet.

Assessment of cancer and dietary risks in commercially valuable marine organisms in coast of a region of future exploration (Equatorial South Atlantic)

The Equatorial South Atlantic region, spanning over 1700 km, is currently undergoing extensive exploitation through various activities such as oil extraction, desalination plants, marine mineral explorations, and wind power for green hydrogen production. This undoubtedly also contributes to the exacerbation of pre-existing chronic environmental impacts. This study aims to investigate the concentrations of 60 substances, categorized as Persistent Organic Pollutants (POPs) and Contaminants of Emerging Concern (CECs) from various classes including: polychlorinated biphenyls (PCBs), polybrominated diphenyl ethers (PBDEs), organochlorine pesticides (OCPs), as well as Pyrethroids (PPs), Triazines (TPs) and Organophosphates (OPPs) pesticides in consumable fish, shellfish, and crabs. The bivalve (Mytella charruana), crab (Ucides cordatus), and catfish (Sciades herzbergii) samples were collected in areas of ecological, environmental and economic importance. This data was used to estimate concentrations in the organisms, and to calculate cancer and human health risk. The most prevalent pollutant classes in the organisms were OCPs, followed by TPs and PPs. Shellfish and fish samples had more compounds indicating health risks, when compared to crabs. The substances causing cancer risks varied across organisms and study areas. The heightened cancer risks linked to specific compounds in various species highlight the urgent need to address persistent pollutants to prevent long-term health impacts on both humans and wildlife. Compounds such as PPs, TPs, and OPPs pose significant risks of neurotoxicity and endocrine disruption. This study underscores the interconnectedness of environmental and human health in coastal ecosystems, calling for continuous monitoring and adaptive management strategies to protect these fragile environments and the communities that rely on them.

A review on hazards and treatment methods of released antibiotics in hospitals wastewater during the COVID-19 pandemic

Drugs and related goods are widely used in order to promote public health and the quality of life. One of the most serious environmental challenges affecting public health is the ongoing presence of antibiotics in the effluents generated by pharmaceutical industries and hospitals. Antibiotics cannot be entirely removed from wastewater using the traditional wastewater treatment methods. Unmetabolized antibiotics generated by humans can be found in urban and livestock effluent. The antibiotic present in effluent contributes to issues with resistance to antibiotics and the creation of superbugs. Over the recent 2 years, the coronavirus disease 2019 pandemic has substantially boosted hospital waste volume. In this situation, a detailed literature review was conducted to highlight the harmful effects of untreated hospital waste and outline the best approaches to manage it. Approximately 50 to 70% of the emerging contaminants prevalent in the hospital wastewater can be removed using traditional treatment strategies. This paper emphasizes the numerous treatment approaches for effectively eliminating emerging contaminants and antibiotics from hospital wastewater and provides an overview of global hospital wastewater legislation and guidelines on hospital wastewater administration. Around 90% of ECs might be eliminated by biological or physical treatment techniques when used in conjunction with modern oxidation techniques. According to this research, hybrid methods are the best approach for removing antibiotics and ECs from hospital wastewater. The document outlines the many features of effective hospital waste management and might be helpful during and after the coronavirus disease 2019 outbreak, when waste creation on all hospitals throughout the globe has considerably increased.

Broad-spectrum degradation of fluoroquinolone antibiotics by Hemin-His-Fe nanozymes with peroxidase-like activity

Fluoroquinolones are a widely used class of antibiotics, with a large variety, which are frequently monitored in the aqueous environment, threatening ecological and human health. To date, effective degradation of fluoroquinolone antibiotics remains a major challenge. Focused on the broad-spectrum degradation of fluoroquinolone antibiotics, a novel biomimetic peroxidase nanozyme named Hemin-His-Fe (HHF)-peroxidase nanozyme was synthesized through a green and rapid "one-pot" method involving hemin, Fmoc-L-His and Fe2+ as precursors. After systematic optimization of the reaction conditions, fluoroquinolone antibiotics can be degraded by the HHF-peroxidase nanozyme when supplemented with H2O2 in acidic environments. Through validation and analysis, it was proved that the generated strong oxidative hydroxyl radicals are the main active species in the degradation process. In addition, it was verified that this method shows great universal applicability in real water samples.

Influence of polystyrene nanoplastics on the toxicity of haloperidol to amphibians: An in vivo and in vitro approach

Chemical pollution is a major driver for the current worldwide crisis of amphibian decline. The present study aimed to assess the influence of polystyrene nanoplastics (PS-NPLs) on the toxicity of haloperidol to aquatic life stages of amphibians, by using in vivo (tadpoles of Xenopus laevis and Pelophylax perezi) and in vitro (A6 and XTC-2 cell lines of X. laevis) biological models. Tadpoles of both species were exposed, for 96 h, to haloperidol: 0.404 to 2.05 mg l-1 (X. laevis) or 0.404 to 3.07 mg L-1 (P. perezi). The most sensitive species to haloperidol (X. laevis) was exposed to haloperidol's LC50,96h combined with two PS-NPLs concentrations (0.01 mg L-1 or 10 mg L-1); the following endpoints were monitored: mortality, malformations, body lengths and weight. In vitro cytotoxicity was assessed by exposing the two cell lines, for 72 h, to: haloperidol (0.195 to 100 mg L-1) alone and combined with 0.01 mg L-1 or 10 mg L-1 of PS-NPLs. Xenopus laevis tadpoles revealed a higher lethal and sublethal sensitivity to haloperidol than those of P. perezi, with LC50,96h of 1.45 and 2.20 mg L-1. In vitro assays revealed that A6 cell line is more sensitive haloperidol than XTC-2: LC50,72h of 13.2 mg L-1 and 5.92 mg L-1, respectively. Results also suggested a higher sensitivity of in vivo models when compared to in vitro biological. Overall, PS-NPLs did not influence haloperidol's toxicity for in vivo and in vitro biological models, except for a reduction on the incidence of malformations while increasing the lethal toxicity (at the lowest concentration) in tadpoles. These opposite interaction patterns highlight the need for a deeper comprehension of NPLs and pharmaceuticals interactions. Results suggest a low risk of haloperidol for anuran tadpoles, though in the presence of PS-NPLs the risk may be increased.

Wastewater reuse and pharmaceutical pollution in agriculture: Uptake, transport, accumulation and metabolism of pharmaceutical pollutants within plants

The presence of pharmaceutical pollutants in water sources has become a growing concern due to its potential impacts on human health and other organisms. The physicochemical properties of pharmaceuticals based on their intended therapeutical application, which include antibiotics, hormones, analgesics, and antidepressants, is quite diverse. Their presence in wastewater, sewerage water, surface water, ground water and even in drinking water is reported by many researchers throughout the world. Human exposure to these pollutants through drinking water or consumption of aquatic and terrestrial organisms has raised concerns about potential adverse effects, such as endocrine disruption, antibiotic resistance, and developmental abnormalities. Once in the environment, they can persist, undergo transformation, or degrade, leading to a complex mixture of contaminants. Application of treated wastewater, compost, manures or biosolids in agricultural fields introduce pharmaceutical pollutants in the environment. As pharmaceuticals are diverse in nature, significant differences are observed during their uptake and accumulation in plants. While there have been extensive studies on aquatic ecosystems, the effect on agricultural land is more disparate. As of now, there are few reports available on the potential of plant uptake and transportation of pharmaceuticals within and between plant organs. This review summarizes the occurrence of pharmaceuticals in aquatic water bodies at a range of concentrations and their uptake, accumulation, and transport within plant tissues. Research gaps on pharmaceutical pollutants' specific effect on plant growth and future research scopes are highlighted. The factors affecting uptake of pharmaceuticals including hydrophobicity, ionization, physicochemical properties (pKa, logKow, pH, Henry's law constant) are discussed. Finally, metabolism of pharmaceuticals within plant cells through metabolism phase enzymes and plant responses to pharmaceuticals are reviewed.

Unmasking Spatial Heterogeneity in Phytotoxicology Mechanisms Induced by Carbamazepine by Mass Spectrometry Imaging and Multiomics Analyses

Previous studies have highlighted the toxicity of pharmaceuticals and personal care products (PPCPs) in plants, yet understanding their spatial distribution within plant tissues and specific toxic effects remains limited. This study investigates the spatial-specific toxic effects of carbamazepine (CBZ), a prevalent PPCP, in plants. Utilizing desorption electrospray ionization mass spectrometry imaging (DESI-MSI), CBZ and its transformation products were observed predominantly at the leaf edges, with 2.3-fold higher concentrations than inner regions, which was confirmed by LC-MS. Transcriptomic and metabolic analyses revealed significant differences in gene expression and metabolite levels between the inner and outer leaf regions, emphasizing the spatial location's role in CBZ response. Notably, photosynthesis-related genes were markedly downregulated, and photosynthetic efficiency was reduced at leaf edges. Additionally, elevated oxidative stress at leaf edges was indicated by higher antioxidant enzyme activity, cell membrane impairment, and increased free fatty acids. Given the increased oxidative stress at the leaf margins, the study suggests using in situ Raman spectroscopy for early detection of CBZ-induced damage by monitoring reactive oxygen species levels. These findings provide crucial insights into the spatial toxicological mechanisms of CBZ in plants, forming a basis for future spatial toxicology research of PPCPs.

Pharmaceutical Pollution Alters the Structure of Freshwater Communities and Hinders Their Recovery from a Fish Predator

Freshwater ecosystems are under threat from rising pharmaceutical pollution. While such pollutants are known to elicit biological effects on organisms, we have limited knowledge on how these effects might cascade through food-webs, disrupt ecological processes, and shape freshwater communities. In this study, we used a mesocosm experiment to explore how the community impacts of a top-order predator, the eastern mosquitofish (Gambusia holbrooki), are mediated by exposure to environmentally relevant low (measured concentration: ∼10 ng/L) and high concentrations (∼110 ng/L) of the pervasive pharmaceutical pollutant fluoxetine. We found no evidence that exposure to fluoxetine altered the consumptive effects of mosquitofish on zooplankton. However, once mosquitofish were removed from the mesocosms, zooplankton abundance recovered to a greater extent in control mesocosms compared to both low and high fluoxetine-exposed mesocosms. By the end of the experiment, this resulted in fundamental differences in community structure between the control and fluoxetine-treated mesocosms. Specifically, the control mesocosms were characterized by higher zooplankton abundances and lower algal biomass, whereas mesocosms exposed to either low or high concentrations of fluoxetine had lower zooplankton abundances and higher algal biomass. Our results suggest that fluoxetine, even at very low concentrations, can alter aquatic communities and hinder their recovery from disturbances.

Recovery mechanism of a microalgal species, Chlorella sp. from toxicity of doxylamine: Physiological and biochemical changes, and transcriptomics

Ubiquitous distribution of pharmaceutical contaminants in environment has caused unexpected adverse effects on ecological organisms; however, how microorganisms recover from their toxicities remains largely unknown. In this study, we comprehensively investigated the effect of a representative pollutant, doxylamine (DOX) on a freshwater microalgal species, Chlorella sp. by analyzing the growth patterns, biochemical changes (total chlorophyll, carotenoid, carbohydrate, protein, and antioxidant enzymes), and transcriptomics. We found toxicity of DOX on Chlorella sp. was mainly caused by disrupting synthesis of ribosomes in nucleolus, and r/t RNA binding and processing. Intriguingly, additional bicarbonate enhanced the toxicity of DOX with decreasing the half-maximum effective concentrations from 15.34 mg L-1 to 4.63 mg L-1, which can be caused by inhibiting fatty acid oxidation and amino acid metabolism. Microalgal cells can recover from this stress via upregulating antioxidant enzymatic activities to neutralize oxidative stresses, and photosynthetic pathways and nitrogen metabolism to supply more energies and cellular signaling molecules. This study extended our understanding on how microalgae can recover from chemical toxicity, and also emphasized the effect of environmental factors on the toxicity of these contaminants on aquatic microorganisms.

High-efficiently utilizing micro-nano ozone bubbles to enhance electro-peroxone process for rapid removal of trace pharmaceutical contaminants from hospital wastewater

The electro-peroxone (EP) process encounters two inherent challenges in wastewater treatment: sluggish O2/O3 transfer and substantial ozone waste. To overcome these limitations, we introduced micro-nano bubbles (MNBs) aeration to enhance O2/O3 dissolution and diffusion, ultimately aiming to improve the removal of trace pharmaceutical contaminants from hospital wastewater. In the MNBs aeration system, the ozone transfer coefficient ranging from 0.536 to 0.265 min-1, significantly surpassing that of conventional aeration (0.220 to 0.090 min-1) by approximately 2 to 4.5 times. Consequently, the EP process under MNBs aeration significantly enhanced ozone-resistant ibuprofen (IBU) removal, achieving a removal rate of 98.4 ± 1.5 %, far exceeding the 47.3 ± 4.7 % observed with conventional aeration. This significant improvement was attributed to the heightened production of hydroxyl radicals (•OH), reaching 0.97 × 10-9 M s, compared to only 0.28 × 10-9 M s in conventional aeration. The mechanism behind the enhanced •OH production in the MNBs-EP process relied primarily on two factors: improved O2/O3 dissolution due to high internal pressure/large surface and enhanced O3/H2O2 activation from high collapse energy. These factors together contributed to the robust oxidation capability of the MNBs-EP system. As a result, over 97 % removal efficiency was achieved for five representative pharmaceutical pollutants (sulfamethoxazole, ribavirin, norfloxacin, tetracycline and ampicillin) in just 1 min. Furthermore, when applied to real hospital wastewater, the MNBs-O3-E treatment system reduced all 15 detected trace pharmaceutical compounds to below 10 ng L-1 and achieved 14 types of pollutants with removal rates of over 85 % within 15 min, resulting in an ultrahigh total removal rate of 98.6 %, from an initial total concentration of 2108 ng L-1 to less than 30 ng L-1. Thus, micro-nano aeration endowed the EP process as a promising advanced oxidation system for rapid and highly-effective removal of trace pharmaceutical contaminants from hospital wastewater.

Adaption and application of cell-based bioassays to whole-water samples

The increasing presence of contaminants of emerging concern in wastewater and their potential environmental risks require improved monitoring and analysis methods. Direct toxicity assessment (DTA) using bioassays can complement chemical analysis of wastewater discharge, but traditional in vivo tests have ethical considerations and are expensive, low-throughput, and limited to apical endpoints (mortality, reproduction, development, and growth). In vitro bioassays offer an alternative approach that is cheaper, faster, and more ethical, and can provide higher sensitivity for some environmentally relevant endpoints. This study explores the potential benefits of using whole water samples of wastewater and environmental surface water instead of traditional solid phase extraction (SPE) methods for in vitro bioassays testing. Whole water samples produced a stronger response in most bioassays, likely due to the loss or alteration of contaminants during SPE sample extraction. In addition, there was no notable difference in results for most bioassays after freezing whole water samples, which allows for increased flexibility in testing timelines and cost savings. These findings highlight the potential advantages of using whole water samples in DTA and provide a framework for future research in this area.

The Importance of Including Variable Exposure Concentrations When Assessing Toxicity of Sediment-Associated Pharmaceuticals to an Amphipod

Pharmaceuticals have been classified as an environmental concern due to their increasing consumption globally and potential environmental impact. We examined the toxicity of sediment-associated diclofenac and citalopram administered as both single compounds and in a mixture to the sediment-living amphipod Corophium volutator. This laboratory-based study addressed the following research questions: (1) What is the toxicity of sediment-associated diclofenac and citalopram to C. volutator? (2) Can the mixture effect be described with either of the two mixture models: concentration addition (CA) or independent action (IA)? (3) What is the importance of the choice of (i) exposure measure (start concentration, time-weighted average [TWA], full exposure profile) and (ii) effect model (concentration-response vs. the toxicokinetic-toxicodynamic model general unified threshold model for survival in its reduced form [GUTS-RED]) for the derived effect concentration values? Diclofenac was more toxic than citalopram to C. volutator as a single compound (10-day exposure). Diclofenac exposure to C. volutator provided median lethal concentrations (LC50s) within the same range (11 µg g-1 dry wt sediment) using concentration-response based on TWA and both GUTS-RED models. However, concentration-response based on measured start concentrations provided an approximately 90% higher LC50 (21.6 ± 2.0 µg g-1 dry wt sediment). For citalopram, concentration-response parameters were similar regardless of model or concentration used (LC50 85-97 µg g-1 dry wt sediment), however, GUTS-RED with the assumption of individual tolerance resulted in a lower LC50 (64.9 [55.3-74.8] µg g-1 dry wt sediment). The mixture of diclofenac and citalopram followed the CA quite closely, whereas the result was synergistic when using the IA prediction. In summary, concentration-response based on TWA and GUTS-RED provided similar and reasonably good fits compared to the data set. The implications are that GUTS-RED will provide a more flexible model, which, in principle, can extend beyond the experimental period and make predictions based on variable exposure profiles (toxicity at different time frames and at different variable exposure scenarios) compared to concentration-response, which provides contaminant toxicity at one point in time. Optimization of TiO2-natural hydrogels for paracetamol and ibuprofen degradation in wastewaters

Agarose/micrometer titanium dioxide (TiO2) beads were essayed to test the photocatalytic capacity of two of the most widely prescribed drugs worldwide: paracetamol and ibuprofen. Although the initial tests demonstrated promising degradation rates for both drugs, the presence of turbidity, due to TiO2 leakage, during the photocatalytic essays induced to improve the stability of the photocatalytic composites. Among the different strategies adopted to strengthen such materials, crosslinking with citric acid and the use of alternative gelling agents: gellan, agargel™, and agar were chosen. Composites obtained by merging both strategies were characterized and employed to degrade both drugs under a simulated light that mimics the solar spectrum (indoor). Considering the superior degradation rates obtained when agar and agarose were used to shape the titanium oxide particles (up to 70-75% of drug destruction), such composites were subjected to a more realistic experiment (outdoor): solar illumination, tap water, and higher volumes, that should facilitate its ulterior scale up as a real wastewater depollution procedure. Degradation rates between 80 and 90% are attained under such conditions for both drugs.

When and How to Conduct Ecotoxicological Tests Using Natural Field-Collected Sediment

In recent years, the sediment compartment has gained more attention when performing toxicity tests, with a growing emphasis on gaining more ecological relevance in testing. Though many standard guidelines recommend using artificially formulated sediment, most sediment studies are using natural sediment collected in the field. Although the use of natural field-collected sediment contributes to more environmentally realistic exposure scenarios and higher well-being for sediment-dwelling organisms, it lowers comparability and reproducibility among studies as a result of, for example, differences in the base sediment depending on sampling site, background contamination, particle size distribution, or organic matter content. The aim of this methodology contribution is to present and discuss best practices related to collecting, handling, describing, and applying natural field-collected sediment in ecotoxicological testing. We propose six recommendations: (1) natural sediment should be collected at a well-studied site, historically and by laboratory analysis; (2) larger quantities of sediment should be collected and stored prior to initiation of an experiment to ensure a uniform sediment base; (3) any sediment used in ecotoxicological testing should be characterized, at the very least, for its water content, organic matter content, pH, and particle size distribution; (4) select spiking method, equilibration time, and experimental setup based on the properties of the contaminant and the research question; (5) include control-, treated similarly to the spiked sediment, and solvent control sediment when appropriate; and (6) quantify experimental exposure concentrations in the overlying water, porewater (if applicable), and bulk sediment at least at the beginning and the end of each experiment. Ionic liquid-based dispersive liquid-liquid microextraction of succinic acid from aqueous streams: COSMO-RS screening and experimental verification

In the present investigation, a total of 108 combinations of ionic liquids (ILs) were screened using the conductor-like screening model for real solvents (COSMO-RS) with the aid of six cations and eighteen anions for the extraction of succinic acid (SA) from aqueous streams through dispersive liquid-liquid microextraction (DLLME). Using the screened ILs, an ionic liquid-based DLLME (IL-DLLME) was developed to extract SA and the role of different reaction parameters in the effectiveness of IL-DLLME approach was investigated. COSMO-RS results suggested that, quaternary ammonium and choline cations form effective IL combinations with [OH¯], [F¯], and [SO42¯] anions due to hydrogen bonding. In view of these results, one of the screened ILs, tetramethylammonium hydroxide [TMAm][OH] was chosen as the extractant in IL-DLLME process and acetonitrile was adopted as the dispersive solvent. The highest SA removal efficiency of 97.8% was achieved using 25 μL of IL [TMAm][OH] as a carrier and 500 μL of acetonitrile as dispersive solvent. The highest amount of SA was extracted with a stir time of 20 min at 300 rpm, followed by centrifugation for 5 min at 4500 rpm. Overall, the findings showed that IL-DLLME is efficient in extracting succinic acid from aqueous environments while adhering to the first-order kinetics.

A Novel Method for the Assessment of Feeding Rate as a Phenotypic Endpoint for the Impact of Pollutants in Daphnids

Traditional approaches for monitoring aquatic pollution primarily rely on chemical analysis and the detection of pollutants in the aqueous environments. However, these methods lack realism and mechanistic insight and, thus, are increasingly supported by effect-based methods, which offer sensitive endpoints. In this context, daphnids, a freshwater species used extensively in molecular ecotoxicology, offer fast and noninvasive approaches to assess the impact of pollutants. Among the phenotypic endpoints used, feeding rate is a highly sensitive approach because it provides evidence of physiological alterations even in sublethal concentrations. However, there has been no standardized method for measuring feeding rate in daphnids, and several approaches follow different protocols. There is a diversity among tests employing large volumes, extensive incubation times, and high animal densities, which in turn utilize measurements of algae via fluorescence, radiolabeling, or counting ingested cells. These tests are challenging and laborious and sometimes require cumbersome instrumentation. In the present study, we optimized the conditions of a miniaturized fast, sensitive, and high-throughput assay to assess the feeding rate based on the ingestion of fluorescent microparticles. The protocol was optimized in neonates in relation to the concentration of microplastic and the number of animals to increase reproducibility. Daphnids, following exposures to nonlethal concentrations, were incubated with microplastics; and, as filter feeders, they ingest microparticles. The new approach revealed differences in the physiology of daphnids in concentrations below the toxicity limits for a range of pollutants of different modes of action, thus proving feeding to be a more sensitive and noninvasive endpoint in pollution assessment. Exploring the defense strategies of benzalkonium chloride exposures on the antioxidant system, photosynthesis and ROS accumulation in Lemna minor

With the advent of technological advancements post the industrial revolution, thousands of chemicals are introduced into the market annually to enhance different facets of human life. Among these, pharmaceutical and personal care products (PPCPs), including antibiotics and disinfectants, such as benzalkonium chlorides (BACs), are prominent. BACs, often used for surface and hand disinfection in high concentrations or as preservatives in health products such as nasal sprays and eye drops, may present environmental risks if they seep into irrigation water through prolonged exposure or improper application. The primary objective of this study is to elucidate the tolerance mechanisms that may arise in Lemna minor plants, known for their remarkable capability to accumulate substances efficiently, in response to exogenously applied BACs at varying concentrations. The study applied six different concentrations of BACs, ranging from 0.25 to 10 mg L-1. The experimental period spanned seven days, during which the treatments were conducted in triplicate to ensure reliability and reproducibility of the results. It was observed that low concentrations of BACs (0.25, 0.5 and 1 mg L-1) did not elicit any statistically significant changes in growth parameters. However, higher concentrations of BACs (2.5, 5, and 10 mg L-1) resulted in a reduction in RGR by 20%, 28%, and 36%, respectively. Chlorophyll fluorescence declined significantly at BAC doses of 5 and 10 mg L-1, with Fv/Fm ratios decreasing by 9% and 15%, and Fv/Fo ratios by 40% and 39%, respectively. Proline content decreased in all treatment groups, with a 46% reduction at 10 mg L-1 BAC. TBARS and H2O2 contents increased proportionally with BAC dosage, showing the highest increases of 30% and 40% at 10 mg L-1, respectively. The noticeable increase in SOD enzyme activity at BAC concentrations of 0.5, 1, and 2.5 mg L-1, with increases of 2.7-fold, 2.2-fold, and 1.7-fold respectively, along with minimal accumulation of H2O2, suggests that L. minor plants have a strong tolerance to BAC. This is supported by the efficient functioning of the CAT and GST enzymes, especially evident at the same concentrations, where increased activities effectively reduce the buildup of H2O2. In the AsA-GSH cycle, although variations were observed between groups, the contribution of the GR enzyme to the preservation of GSH content by recycling GSSG likely maintained redox homeostasis in the plant, especially at low concentrations of BACs. The study revealed that L. minor effectively accumulates BAC alongside its tolerance mechanisms and high antioxidant activity. These results underscore the potential for environmental cleanup efforts through phytoremediation.

Electrochemical and optical protocols for the detection and removal of an antibiotic drug rifaximin from wastewater

Improper disposal of pharmaceutical drugs is increasing the pollution level of water reservoirs which in turn adversely impacts the ecosystem. The current study presents an electrochemical scaffold that comprises a glassy carbon electrode modified with amino-functionalized multiwalled carbon nanotubes (NH2-fMWCNTs) for the detection of a pharmaceutical drug rifaximin in wastewater. Electrochemical impedance spectroscopic characterization revealed efficient charge transport through the modified electrode surface. Square wave voltammetry was employed for probing the electro-oxidation of antibiotic rifaximin. Under optimized experimental conditions, the designed sensor demonstrated the qualities of sensitivity, repeatability, and reproducibility as required for the practical applicability of the sensing device. After the detection of a contaminant, its removal from water is imperative. In this regard an adsorption method using ZnO nanoparticles as adsorbents was developed that led to the removal of rifaximin from wastewater. At lower adsorbate concentration, adsorption was found to occur according to the Langmuir model while at higher concentration adsorption data followed the Freundlich model. The rate of rifaximin adsorption over ZnO nanoparticles followed pseudo-second-order kinetics.

Accumulation of antibiotics in the environment: Have appropriate measures been taken to protect Canadian human and ecological health?

In Canada, every day, contaminants of emerging concern (CEC) are discharged from waste treatment facilities into freshwaters. CECs such as pharmaceutical active compounds (PhACs), personal care products (PCPs), per- and polyfluoroalkyl substances (PFAS), and microplastics are legally discharged from sewage treatment plants (STPs), water reclamation plants (WRPs), hospital wastewater treatment plants (HWWTPs), or other forms of wastewater treatment facilities (WWTFs). In 2006, the Government of Canada established the Chemicals Management Plan (CMP) to classify chemicals based on a risk-priority assessment, which ranked many CECs such as PhACs as being of low urgency, therefore permitting these substances to continue being released into the environment at unmonitored rates. The problem with ranking PhACs as a low priority is that CMP's risk management assessment overlooks the long-term environmental and synergistic effects of PhAC accumulation, such as the long-term risk of antibiotic CEC accumulation in the spread of antibiotic resistance genes. The goal of this review is to specifically investigate antibiotic CEC accumulation and associated environmental risks to human and environmental health, as well as to determine whether appropriate legislative strategies are in place within Canada's governance framework. In this research, secondary data on antibiotic CEC levels in Canadian and international wastewaters, their potential to promote antibiotic-resistant residues, associated environmental short- and long-term risks, and synergistic effects were all considered. Unlike similar past reviews, this review employed an interdisciplinary approach to propose new strategies from the perspectives of science, engineering, and law.

In-silico mechanistic analysis of adsorption of Iodinated Contrast Media agents on graphene surface

The study aims at assessing the potential of graphene-based adsorbents to reduce environmental impacts of Iodinated Contrast Media Agents (ICMs). We analyze an extensive collection of ICMs. A modeling approach resting on molecular docking and Density Functional Theory simulations is employed to examine the adsorption process at the molecular level. The study also relies on a Quantitative Structure-Activity Relationship (QSAR) modeling framework to correlate molecular properties with the adsorption energy (Ead) of ICMs, thus enabling identification of the key mechanisms underpinning adsorption and of the key factors contributing to it. A collection of distinct QSAR-based models is developed upon relying on Multiple Linear Regression and a standard genetic algorithm method. Having at our disposal multiple models enables us to take into account the uncertainty associated with model formulation. Maximum Likelihood and formal model identification/discrimination criteria (such as Bayesian and/or information theoretic criteria) are then employed to complement the traditional QSAR modeling phase. This has the advantage of (a) providing a rigorous ranking of the alternative models included in the selected set and (b) quantifying the relative degree of likelihood of each of these models through a weight or posterior probability. The resulting workflow of analysis enables one to seamlessly embed DFT and QSAR studies within a theoretical framework of analysis that explicitly takes into account model and parameter uncertainty. Our results suggest that graphene-based surfaces constitute a promising adsorbent for ICMs removal, π-π stacking being the primary mechanism behind ICM adsorption. Furthermore, our findings offer valuable insights into the potential of graphene-based adsorbent materials for effectively removing ICMs from water systems. They contribute to ascertain the significance of various factors (such as, e.g., the distribution of atomic van der Waals volumes, overall molecular complexity, the presence and arrangement of Iodine atoms, and the presence of polar functional groups) on the adsorption process.

Reproductive toxicity and molecular responses induced by telmisartan in Daphnia magna at environmentally relevant concentrations

With aging population increasing globally, the use of pharmaceutically active compounds is rising. The cardiovascular drug telmisartan has been widely detected in various environmental compartments, including biota, surface waters, and sewage treatment plant effluents at concentrations ranging from ng/L to μg/L levels. This study evaluated the effects of telmisartan on the microcrustacean Daphnia magna at a wide range of concentrations (0.35, 0.70, 1.40, 500, and 1000 μg/L) and revealed significant ecotoxicological implications of this drug, even at environmentally relevant concentration. Acute exposure to telmisartan (1.40, 500, and 1000 μg/L) resulted in a notable decrease in heart rate, while chronic exposure accelerated the time to the first brood by 3 days and reduced neonate body size. Molecular investigations revealed marked downregulation of vitellogenin genes (Vtg1 and Vtg2). Non-monotonic dose responses were observed for gene expression, early-stage body length, and the total number of offspring produced, while the heart rate and time to the first brood showed clear concentration-dependent responses. These findings highlight the potential risks, notably to reproductive capacity, associated with exposure to telmisartan in environmentally relevant concentration, suggesting the need for further studies on the potential long-term ecological consequences.

More sustainable use of iodinated contrast media - Why?

OBJECTIVES

Based on a narrative review of the literature to 1) assess the need for and 2) report methods to help deliver a sustainable approach to iodinated contrast media (ICM) administration.

KEY FINDINGS

Acute ICM shortages have been noted in the literature. As demand for contrast-enhanced imaging continues to increase and access to raw materials becomes more limited, such events may increase. Evidence from the literature has documented a range of iodinated contrast reduction strategies. These include individualised contrast-media dosing, multi-dose bulk ICM vials, switching to alternative modalities or the increased use of non-contrast examinations. The optimisation of imaging parameters, the use of saline chasers, and alternative contrast agents should be further considered. Given the rising concerns regarding the presence and effects of ICMs in waste and drinking water, further consideration of strategies for managing waste and excreted ICMs are starting to emerge.

CONCLUSIONS

Sustainable ICM practices are needed to help avoid supply shortages and to help protect our environment. Such practices must be led and supported locally, nationally, and internationally. Sustainable ICM practices must be reflected within professional Standards of Proficiencies and be adopted by all members of the multidisciplinary team.

IMPLICATIONS FOR PRACTICE

Changes to working practices surrounding the sustainable use of ICMs will likely become commonplace. New methods to ensure optimised ICM dosage with minimal wastage will be more heavily featured in departmental practices. Correct disposal of waste and excreted ICMs will also form part of future changes to practice.

Water Vapor Condensation Triggers Simultaneous Oxidation and Hydrolysis of Organic Pollutants on Iron Mineral Surfaces

Increasing worldwide contamination with organic chemical compounds is a paramount environmental challenge facing humanity. Once they enter nature, pollutants undergo transformative processes that critically shape their environmental impacts and associated risks. This research unveils previously overlooked yet widespread pathways for the transformations of organic pollutants triggered by water vapor condensation, leading to spontaneous oxidation and hydrolysis of organic pollutants. These transformations exhibit variability through either sequential or parallel hydrolysis and oxidation, contingent upon the functional groups within the organic pollutants. For instance, acetylsalicylic acid on the goethite surface underwent sequential hydrolysis and oxidation that first hydrolyzed to salicylic acid followed by hydroxylation oxidation of the benzene moiety driven by the hydroxyl radical (•OH). In contrast, chloramphenicol underwent parallel oxidation and hydrolysis, forming hydroxylated chloramphenicol and 2-amino-1-(4-nitrophenyl)-1,3-propanediol, respectively. The spontaneous oxidation and hydrolysis occurred consistently on three naturally abundant iron minerals with the key factors being •OH production capacity and surface binding strength. Given the widespread presence of iron minerals on Earth's surface, these spontaneous transformation paths could play a role in the fate and risks of organic pollutants of health concerns.

Impact of veterinary pharmaceuticals on environment and their mitigation through microbial bioremediation

Veterinary medications are constantly being used for the diagnosis, treatment, and prevention of diseases in livestock. However, untreated veterinary drug active compounds are interminably discharged into numerous water bodies and terrestrial ecosystems, during production procedures, improper disposal of empty containers, unused medication or animal feed, and treatment procedures. This exhaustive review describes the different pathways through which veterinary medications enter the environment, discussing the role of agricultural practices and improper disposal methods. The detrimental effects of veterinary drug compounds on aquatic and terrestrial ecosystems are elaborated with examples of specific veterinary drugs and their known impacts. This review also aims to detail the mechanisms by which microbes degrade veterinary drug compounds as well as highlighting successful case studies and recent advancements in microbe-based bioremediation. It also elaborates on microbial electrochemical technologies as an eco-friendly solution for removing pharmaceutical pollutants from wastewater. Lastly, we have summarized potential innovations and challenges in implementing bioremediation on a large scale under the section prospects and advancements in this field.

Incorporating functionalized graphene oxide into diethylene triamine-based nanofiltration membranes can improve the removal of emerging organic micropollutants

The presence of emerging organic micropollutants (OMPs) in drinking and potable waters is a matter of great concern due to the health hazards associated with these. In this work, we present the preparation and application of a thin-film nanocomposite (TFN) membrane containing functionalized graphene oxide to effectively remove low-molecular-weight OMPs from water. Graphene oxide was functionalized with amino silane to enhance its cross-linking capability during the formation of the polyamide active layer via interfacial polymerization of diethylene triamine and trimesoyl chloride. The TEM analysis showed that amino silane functionalized GO had 2-3 layered sheets, while non-functionalized graphene oxide appeared multilayered or stacked. XPS analysis confirmed the successful functionalization of GO. Characterization of the membranes with advanced techniques confirmed the successful incorporation of the GO and its functionalization: spectra from Fourier Transform Infra Red spectroscopy had the characteristic peaks of GO and NH groups; scanning Electron Microscopy (SEM) images showed a continuous presence of GO nanosheets. Contact angle measurements showed the TFN membranes to be more hydrophilic than their thin film composite (TFC) counterparts. Incorporating functionalized oxide nanosheets in the active polyamide layer produced additional water permeation channels, resulting in an improvement of ∼25 % in permeate flux compared to the pristine TFC and the TFN membrane with non-functionalized GO. The removal efficiencies of four OMPs commonly found in natural waters: Amitriptylene HCl (ATT HCl) and Bisphenol-A (BPA), Acetaminophen (ACT), and Caffeine (CFN) were determined for the synthesized membranes. The TFN membrane with functionalized GO outperformed its TFC counterpart with ∼100 % removal for BPA, ∼ 90 % for CFN and ATT HCl, and ∼80 % removal for the low molecular weight ACT. The high-efficiency rejection of OMPs was attributed to the synergistic effects of size exclusion as well as the reduced specific interactions between the functional groups.

Metformin as an Emerging Pollutant in the Aquatic Environment: Occurrence, Analysis, and Toxicity

The use of human and veterinary drugs has led to the accumulation of pharmaceuticals in various aquatic environments at progressively increasing levels, exhibiting strong ecological risks. Metformin is widely used as a first-line prescription drug for the treatment of type 2 diabetes mellitus as well as a livestock drug. Unlike other drugs, metformin is not metabolized in the body, and almost all of its intake is excreted and released into the aquatic environment via urine and feces, causing adverse effects on aquatic ecosystems. This review provides an overview of the occurrence and detection of metformin in the aquatic environment and its toxic effects on different aquatic organisms (fish, daphnia, rotifers, chlorella). Metformin has been documented in a variety of aqueous environments such as wastewater, surface water, and groundwater as well as drinking water. The wide distribution of metformin in the aqueous environment calls for the development of more accurate detection methods. This paper reviews detection methods for metformin in the aqueous environment and evaluates their advantages and disadvantages. Toxicity studies have shown that metformin can cause adverse reactions in fish, such as oxidative stress, genotoxicity, disruption of intestinal flora, and morphological alterations; it also affects the growth and reproduction of small aquatic organisms. Knowledge gaps in the field of metformin research were assessed, and future research priorities were identified.

Application of in vitro bioassays to monitor pharmaceuticals in water: A synthesis of chronological analysis, mode of action, and practical insights

Pharmaceutical compounds in wastewater have emerged as a significant concern for the aquatic environment. The use of in vitro bioassays represents a sustainable and cost-effective approach for assessing the potential toxicological risks of these biologically active compounds in wastewater and aligns with ethical considerations in research. It facilitates high-throughput analysis, captures mixture effects, integrates impacts of both known and unknown chemicals, and reduces reliance on animal testing. The core aim of the current review was to explore the practical application of in vitro bioassays in evaluating the environmental impacts of pharmaceuticals in wastewater. This comprehensive review strives to achieve several key objectives. First, it provides a summary categorisation of pharmaceuticals based on their mode of action, providing a structured framework for understanding their ecological significance. Second, a chronological analysis of pharmaceutical research aims to document their prevalence and trends over time, shedding light on evolving environmental challenges. Third, the review critically analyses existing bioassay applications in wastewater, while also examining bioassay coverage of representative compounds within major pharmaceutical classes. Finally, it explores the potential for developing innovative bioassays tailored for water quality monitoring of pharmaceuticals, paving the way for more robust environmental monitoring and risk assessment. Overall, adopting effect-based methods for pharmaceutical monitoring in water holds significant promise. It encompasses a broad spectrum of biological impacts, promotes standardized protocols, and supports a bioassay test battery approach indicative of different endpoints, thereby enhancing the effectiveness of environmental risk assessment.

A review on titanium oxide nanoparticles modified metal-organic frameworks for effective CO2 conversion and efficient wastewater remediation

Environmental pollution has been increasing since last decade due to increasing industrialisation and urbanisation. Various kinds ofenvironmental pollutants including carbon dioxide (CO2), dyes, pharmaceuticals, phenols, heavy metals along with many organic and inorganic species have been discovered in the various environmental compartments which possess harmful impacts tox human health, wildlife, and ecosystems. Thus, various efforts have been made through regulations, technological advancements, and public awareness campaigns to reduce the impact of the pollution. However, finding suitable alternatives to mitigate their impacts remained a challenge. Metal-organic frameworks (MOFs) are one of the advanced materials with unique features such as high porosity and stability which exhibit versatile applications in environmental remediation. Their composites with titanium oxide nanoparticles (TiO2) have been discovered to offer potential feature such as light harvesting capacity and catalytic activity. The composite integration and properties have been confirmed through characterization using surface area analysis, scanning electron/transmission electron microscopy, atomic force microscopy, fourier transformed infrared spectroscopy, X-ray diffraction analysis, X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy, thermogravimetric analysis, and others. Thus, this work rigorously discussed potential applications of the MOF@TiO2 nanomaterials for the CO2 capture and effective utilization in methanol, ethanol, acetone, acetaldehyde, and other useful products that served as fuel to various industrial processes. Additionally, the work highlights the effective performance of the materials towards photocatalytic degradation of both organic and inorganic pollutants with indepth mechanistic insights. The article will offer significant contribution for the development of sustainable and efficient technologies for the environmental monitoring and pollution mitigation.

Evaluation of acetanilide and antipyrine adsorption on lignin-derived activated carbons

In this study, the removal of two emerging pollutants (EPs), antipyrine and acetanilide, through adsorption on activated carbons (ACs) prepared by chemical activation of Organosolv lignin with H3PO4 were evaluated. ACs with different pore size distribution were obtained at different impregnation ratios (H3PO4/lignin, 0.5-3.0 w/w) and activating temperatures (500-900 °C). The porosity and surface chemistry of the ACs were determined, and a bimodal size distribution of micropores and narrow mesopores was observed for the different ACs. These ACs were tested for antipyrine and acetanilide adsorption in aqueous solutions in a batch system at 20 °C and low concentration levels (0.5-10 ppm). In general, the ACs exhibited higher adsorption affinity to acetanilide than to antipyrine due to its smaller molecular size. Langmuir adsorption isotherm was able to describe the adsorption equilibrium data. A new Linear Driving Force (2-LDF) kinetic model, based on the bimodal size distribution of micropores and narrow mesopores observed for the ACs has been developed. The new model provided a more accurate description of the batch adsorption rates than that obtained from conventional kinetic models, and also enabled to relate the pore size distribution of the adsorbent with the adsorption kinetics. The validity of this model was checked in small-scale column fixed bed adsorption for the AC showing the highest affinity for both EP. The kinetic model and equilibrium adsorption isotherm obtained from the batch experiments were successfully used to provide an accurate description of the bed service time and the full breakthrough profile of acetanilide and antipyrine.

Biocomposite Material Based on Lactococcus lactis sp. Immobilized in Natural Polymer Matrix for Pharmaceutical Removal from Aqueous Media

Ecosystems are negatively impacted by pharmaceutical-contaminated water in different ways. In this work, a new biosorbent obtained by immobilizing Lactococcus lactis in a calcium alginate matrix was developed for the removal of pharmaceuticals from aqueous solutions. Ethacridine lactate (EL) was selected as the target drug. Lactococcus Lactis biomass was chosen for the biosorbent synthesis for two reasons: (i) the microbial biomass used in the food industry allows the development of a low-cost biosorbent from available and renewable materials, and (ii) there is no literature mentioning the use of Lactococcus Lactis biomass immobilized in natural polymers as a biosorbent for the removal of pharmaceuticals. The characterization of the synthesized biosorbent named 5% LLA was performed by scanning electron microscopy (SEM) and Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR) analysis. Additionally, particle size and the point of zero charge were established. Batch biosorption investigations showed that using 5% LLA at an initial pH of 3.0 and a biosorbent dose of 2 g/L resulted in up to 80% EL removal efficiency for all EL initial concentrations (20-60 mg/L). Four equilibrium isotherms, given in the order of Redlich-Peterson > Freundlich > Hill > Temkin, are particularly relevant for describing the experimental data for EL biosorption on the 5% LLA biosorbent using correlation coefficient values. Kinetic parameters were determined using kinetic models such as pseudo-first-order, pseudo-second-order, Elovich, Avrami and Weber-Morris. The pseudo-second-order kinetics model provides the greatest fit among the evaluated equations, with correlation coefficients greater than 0.99. According to the study's findings, the developed biocomposite is a potentially useful material for the removal of pharmaceuticals from aqueous matrices.

Single and combined toxicity of tadalafil (Cilais) and microplastic in Tilapia fish (Oreochromis niloticus)

The joint impact of tadalafil (Cilais) as a pharmaceutical residue and microplastics on fish is not well comprehended. The current study examined haematological, biochemical, and antioxidant parameters, along with immunohistochemical and histological indications in tilapia (Oreochromis niloticus) after being exposed to tadalafil, polyethylene microplastics (PE-MPs), and their mixtures for 15 days. The fish were distributed into 1st group control group (The fish was maintained in untreated water without any supplements); 2nd group exposed to 10 mg/L PE-MPs;3rd group exposed to 20 mg/l tadalafil (Cilais); 4th group exposed to 20 mg/l tadalafil (Cilais) + 10 mg/LPE-MPs (in triplicate). The levels of creatinine, uric acid, glucose, AST, ALT, and albumin in fish treated with tadalafil alone or in combination with PE-MPs were significantly higher than those in the control group. Fish exposed to PE-MPs, tadalafil, and tadalafil plus PE-MPs showed significantly lower levels of RBCs, Hb, Ht, neutrophils, and lymphocytes compared to the control group. Serum levels of total antioxidant capacity and reduced glutathione (GSH) were notably lowered in fish groups subjected to PE-MPs, tadalafil, and tadalafil + PE-MPs combinations in comparison to the control group. Malondialdehyde (MDA) serum levels were notably elevated in fish groups subjected to PE-MPs, tadalafil, and tadalafil + PE-MPs combinations compared to the control group. The most severe impact was observed in the tadalafil + PE-MPs combination group. Interleukin-6 (IL-6) levels were significantly increased in liver tissues following exposure to both tadalafil and microplastics compared to tissues exposed to only one substance or the control group. Changes in the gills, liver, and renal tissues were seen following exposure to PE-MPs, tadalafil, and tadalafil + PE-MPs combination in comparison to the control group of fish. Ultimately, the mixture of tadalafil and PE-MPs resulted in the most detrimental outcomes. Tadalafil and PE-MPs exhibited showed greater adverse effects, likely due to tadalafil being absorbed onto PE-MPs.

Biomorphometric and hematobiochemical alterations in the juvenile african catfish Clarias gariepinus exposed to propranolol

Propranolol (PRO) is a beta-blocker drug used for the treatment of anxiety, chest pain, migraine and tremors. The present study investigated whether sublethal concentrations of PRO have effects on the body condition, biochemistry, and hematology of Clarias gariepinus juveniles. The 96-h median lethal concentration (LC50) of the drug, which was established through an acute toxicity study, was 9.48 mg/L. Based on these values, the fish were exposed for 21 days to the control and sublethal concentrations of 1.90, 0.95, and 0.63 mg/L, which are equivalent to the 1/5th, 1/10th, and 1/20th of the LC50 of PRO, respectively. After 21 days of exposure, the fish were removed from the toxicant and kept in toxicant-free water for 7 days to recover. The standard length and body weight of each fish were measured after each exposure period. The condition factor (CF) and hepatosomatic index (HSI) were not significantly affected by the drug. The red blood cell (RBC) count, hemoglobin (Hb) count and packed cell volume (PCV) decreased from day 7 to 21 at the tested concentrations, while the white blood cell (WBC) count significantly increased. There were alterations in the mean corpuscular volume (MCV), mean corpuscular hemoglobin concentration (MCHC), and mean corpuscular hemoglobin (MCH) in the exposed groups compared to those in the control group. When neutrophil counts increased, the lymphocyte counts decreased, but the monocyte, basophil cell and eosinophil cell counts were not affected. Among the liver enzymes, only aspartate aminotransferase was significantly stimulated in the groups that were exposed to the drug. The protein and glucose levels of fish exposed to the drug decreased. Most of the studied parameters returned to their original values after the 7-day recovery period. The information provided in the current study will be helpful in the monitoring of PRO contamination in aquatic environments.

Biodegradation of Photocatalytic Degradation Products of Sulfonamides: Kinetics and Identification of Intermediates

Sulfonamides can be effectively removed from wastewater through a photocatalytic process. However, the mineralization achieved by this method is a long-term and expensive process. The effect of shortening the photocatalytic process is the partial degradation and formation of intermediates. The purpose of this study was to evaluate the sensitivity and transformation of photocatalytic reaction intermediates in aerobic biological processes. Sulfadiazine and sulfamethoxazole solutions were used in the study, which were irradiated in the presence of a TiO2-P25 catalyst. The resulting solutions were then aerated after the addition of river water or activated sludge suspension from a commercial wastewater treatment plant. The reaction kinetics were determined and fifteen products of photocatalytic degradation of sulfonamides were identified. Most of these products were further transformed in the presence of activated sludge suspension or in water taken from the river. They may have been decomposed into other organic and inorganic compounds. The formation of biologically inactive acyl derivatives was observed in the biological process. However, compounds that are more toxic to aquatic organisms than the initial drugs can also be formed. After 28 days, the sulfamethoxazole concentration in the presence of activated sludge was reduced by 66 ± 7%. Sulfadiazine was practically non-biodegradable under the conditions used. The presented results confirm the advisability of using photocatalysis as a process preceding biodegradation.

Microfluidic sensors for the detection of emerging contaminants in water: A review

In recent years, numerous emerging contaminants have been identified in surface water, groundwater, and drinking water. Developing novel sensing methods for detecting diverse emerging pollutants in water is urgently needed, as even at low concentrations, these pollutants can pose a serious threat to human health and environmental safety. Traditional testing methods are based on laboratory equipment, which is highly sensitive but complex to operate, costly, and not suitable for on-site monitoring. Microfluidic sensors offer several benefits, including rapid evaluation, minimal sample usage, accurate liquid manipulation, compact size, automation, and in-situ detection capabilities. They provide promising and efficient analytical tools for high-performance sensing platforms in monitoring emerging contaminants in water. In this paper, recent research advances in microfluidic sensors for the detection of emerging contaminants in water are reviewed. Initially, a concise overview is provided about the various substrate materials, corresponding microfabrication techniques, different driving forces, and commonly used detection techniques for microfluidic devices. Subsequently, a comprehensive analysis is conducted on microfluidic detection methods for endocrine-disrupting chemicals, pharmaceuticals and personal care products, microplastics, and perfluorinated compounds. Finally, the prospects and future challenges of microfluidic sensors in this field are discussed.

Trace cisplatin adsorption by thiol-functionalized sponge (TFS) and Sn/SnO2-coated TFS: Adsorption study and mechanism investigation

To remove trace cisplatin from aqueous solution, commercial sponges were functionalized by esterification with 3-mercaptopropionic acid, followed by reduction with Na2S·9H2O or SnCl2·2H2O. The resulting thiol-functionalized sponges (TFSs), TFS_1 and TFS_2, were tested for the removal of cisplatin (235 μg L-1) achieving maximum removal of 95.5 ± 0.8% and 99.5 ± 0.1% respectively, which were significantly higher than the non-functionalized counterpart. The successful grafting of thiol groups, verified through FTIR, elemental analysis, SEM-EDS, and XPS characterization, facilitated Pt-S complexation during adsorption. The aqua-derivatives of cisplatin, formed through hydration, complexed with thiol sites through ligand displacement. Additionally, the presence of Sn/SnO2 coating on TFS_2 further enhanced the adsorption process. The rapid adsorption process conformed to pseudo-second-order kinetic model, involving both diffusion and chemisorption. While the Langmuir isotherm model generally described the monolayer adsorption behavior of cisplatin, the aggregation of Sn/SnO2 onto TFS_2 at 343 K introduced surface heterogeneity, rendering the Freundlich model a better fit for the adsorption isotherm. Differential pH dependence and the evaluation of mean free energy, derived from the Dubinin-Radushkevich isotherm model, indicated that cisplatin adsorption onto TFS_1 involved physisorption, including electrostatic attraction, while chemisorption predominated for TFS_2. Increasing the temperature notably promoted adsorption by facilitating the thermal-favored formation of Pt-S bonds.

Non-Steroidal Anti-Inflammatory Drugs in the Aquatic Environment and Bivalves: The State of the Art

In recent years, contaminants of emerging concern have been reported in several environmental matrices due to advances in analytical methodologies. These anthropogenic micropollutants are detected at residual levels, representing an ecotoxicological threat to aquatic ecosystems. In particular, the pharmacotherapeutic group of non-steroidal anti-inflammatories (NSAIDs) is one of the most prescribed and used, as well as one of the most frequently detected in the aquatic environment. Bivalves have several benefits as a foodstuff, and also as an environment bioindicator species. Therefore, they are regarded as an ideal tool to assess this issue from both ecotoxicological and food safety perspectives. Thus, the control of these residues in bivalves is extremely important to safeguard environmental health, also ensuring food safety and public health. This paper aims to review NSAIDs in bivalves, observing their consumption, physicochemical characteristics, and mechanisms of action; their environmental occurrence in the aquatic environment and aquatic biota; and their effects on the ecosystem and the existent legal framework. A review of the analytical methodologies for the determination of NSAIDs in bivalves is also presented.

Ciprofloxacin Electrochemical Sensor Using Copper-Iron Mixed Metal Oxides Nanoparticles/Reduced Graphene Oxide Composite

The harmful effects of antibiotic proliferation on the environment and its persistent nature are urgent global problems. Ciprofloxacin (CIP) is a fluoroquinolone-class antibiotic agent used widely to treat pathogen-related diseases in humans and animals. Its excretion into surface water causes antibiotic resistance in microbes, resulting in difficult-to-treat or untreatable infectious diseases. This study developed a simple and efficient electrochemical sensor to detect CIP. Hydrothermal chemistry was utilized to synthesize an electrophotocatalytic composite of copper-iron mixed metal oxides (CIMMO) on reduced graphene oxide (rGO) (CIMMO/rGO). The composite was employed in an electrochemical sensor and exhibited outstanding performance in detecting CIP. The sensor was operated in differential pulse voltammetry (DPV) mode under light source illumination. The sensor yielded a linear response in the concentration range of 0.75 × 10-9-1.0 × 10-7 mol L-1 CIP and showed a limit of detection (LOD) of 4.74 × 10-10 mol L-1. The excellent sensing performance of the composite is attributable to the synergic effects between CIMMO nanoparticles and rGO, which facilitate photoinduced electron-hole separation and assist in the indirect electrochemical reactions/interactions with CIP.

Scalable Preparation of Ultraselective and Highly Permeable Fully Aromatic Polyamide Nanofiltration Membranes for Antibiotic Desalination

Membranes are important in the pharmaceutical industry for the separation of antibiotics and salts. However, its widespread adoption has been hindered by limited control of the membrane microstructure (pore architecture and free-volume elements), separation threshold, scalability, and operational stability. In this study, 4,4',4'',4'''-methanetetrayltetrakis(benzene-1,2-diamine) (MTLB) as prepared as a molecular building block for fabricating thin-film composite membranes (TFCMs) via interfacial polymerization. The relatively large molecular size and rigid molecular structure of MTLB, along with its non-coplanar and distorted conformation, produced thin and defect-free selective layers (~27 nm) with ideal microporosities for antibiotic desalination. These structural advantages yielded an unprecedented high performance with a water permeance of 45.2 L m-2 h-1 bar-1 and efficient antibiotic desalination (NaCl/adriamycin selectivity of 422). We demonstrated the feasibility of the industrial scaling of the membrane into a spiral-wound module (with an effective area of 2.0 m2). This module exhibited long-term stability and performance that surpassed those of state-of-the-art membranes used for antibiotic desalination. This study provides a scientific reference for the development of high-performance TFCMs for water purification and desalination in the pharmaceutical industry.

Pharmaceutical removal from wastewater by introducing cytochrome P450s into microalgae

Pharmaceuticals are of increasing environmental concern as they emerge and accumulate in surface- and groundwater systems around the world, endangering the overall health of aquatic ecosystems. Municipal wastewater discharge is a significant vector for pharmaceuticals and their metabolites to enter surface waters as humans incompletely absorb prescription drugs and excrete up to 50% into wastewater, which are subsequently incompletely removed during wastewater treatment. Microalgae present a promising target for improving wastewater treatment due to their ability to remove some pollutants efficiently. However, their inherent metabolic pathways limit their capacity to degrade more recalcitrant organic compounds such as pharmaceuticals. The human liver employs enzymes to break down and absorb drugs, and these enzymes are extensively researched during drug development, meaning the cytochrome P450 enzymes responsible for metabolizing each approved drug are well studied. Thus, unlocking or increasing cytochrome P450 expression in endogenous wastewater microalgae could be a cost-effective strategy to reduce pharmaceutical loads in effluents. Here, we discuss the challenges and opportunities associated with introducing cytochrome P450 enzymes into microalgae. We anticipate that cytochrome P450-engineered microalgae can serve as a new drug removal method and a sustainable solution that can upgrade wastewater treatment facilities to function as "mega livers".

Reactivity of unactivated peroxymonosulfate and peroxyacetic acid with thioether micropollutants: Mechanisms and rate prediction

Thioether compounds, prevalent in pharmaceuticals, are of growing environmental concern due to their prevalence and potential toxicity. Peroxy chemicals, including peroxymonosulfate (PMS) and peroxyacetic acid (PAA), hold promise for selectively attacking specific thioether moieties. Still, it has been unclear how chemical structures affect the interactions between thioethers and peroxy chemicals. This study addresses this knowledge gap by quantitatively assessing the relationship between the structure of thioethers and intrinsic reaction rates. First, the results highlighted the adverse impact of electron-withdrawing groups on reactivity. Theoretical calculations were employed to locate reactive sites and investigate structural characteristics, indicating a close relationship between thioether charge and reaction rate. Additionally, we established a SMILES-based model for rapidly predicting PMS reactivity with thioether compounds. With this model, we identified 147 thioether chemicals within the high production volume (HPV) and Food and Drug Administration (FDA) approved drug lists that PMS could effectively eliminate with the toxicity (-lg LC50) decreasing. These findings underscore the environmental significance of thioether compounds and the potential for their selective removal by peroxides.

Bio-electrochemical degradation of carbamazepine (CBZ): A comprehensive study on effectiveness, degradation pathway, and toxicological assessment

Recent attention on the detrimental effects of pharmaceutically active compounds (PhACs) in natural water has spurred researchers to develop advanced wastewater treatment methods. Carbamazepine (CBZ), a widely recognized anticonvulsant, has often been a primary focus in numerous studies due to its prevalence and resistance to breaking down. This study aims to explore the effectiveness of a bio-electrochemical system in breaking down CBZ in polluted water and to assess the potential harmful effects of the treated wastewater. The results revealed bio-electro degradation process demonstrated a collaborative effect, achieving the highest CBZ degradation compared to electrodegradation and biodegradation techniques. Notably, a maximum CBZ degradation efficiency of 92.01% was attained using the bio-electrochemical system under specific conditions: Initial CBZ concentration of 60 mg/L, pH level at 7, 0.5% (v/v) inoculum dose, and an applied potential of 10 mV. The degradation pathway established by identifying intermediate products via High-Performance Liquid Chromatography-Mass Spectrometry, revealed the complete breakdown of CBZ without any toxic intermediates or end products. This finding was further validated through in vitro and in vivo toxicity assays, confirming the absence of harmful remnants after the degradation process.

Influence of vegetation and substrate type on removal of emerging organic contaminants and microbial dynamics in horizontal subsurface constructed wetlands

Constructed wetlands (CWs) offer an efficient alternative technology for removing emerging organic contaminants (EOCs) from wastewater. Optimizing CW performance requires understanding the impact of CW configuration on EOC removal and microbial community dynamics. This study investigated EOC removal and microbial communities in horizontal subsurface flow (HSSF) CWs over a 26-month operational period. Comparison between tuff-filled and gravel-filled CWs highlighted the superior EOC removal in tuff-filled CWs during extended operation, likely caused by the larger surface area of the tuff substrate fostering microbial growth, sorption, and biodegradation. Removal of partially positively charged EOCs, like atenolol (29-98 %) and fexofenadine (21-87 %), remained constant in the different CWs, and was mainly attributed to sorption. In contrast, removal rates for polar non-sorbing compounds, including diclofenac (3-64 %), acyclovir (9-85 %), and artificial sweeteners acesulfame (5-60 %) and saccharin (1-48 %), seemed to increase over time due to enhanced biodegradation. The presence of vegetation and different planting methods (single vs. mixed plantation) had a limited impact, underscoring the dominance of substrate type in the CW performance. Microbial community analysis identified two stages: a startup phase (1-7 months) and a maturation phase (19-26 months). During this transition, highly diverse communities dominated by specific species in the early stages gave way to more evenly distributed and relatively stable communities. Proteobacteria and Bacteroidetes remained dominant throughout. Alphaproteobacteria, Acidobacteria, Planctomycetes, Salinimicrobium, and Sphingomonas were enriched during the maturation phase, potentially serving as bioindicators for EOC removal. In conclusion, this study emphasizes the pivotal role of substrate type and maturation in the removal of EOCs in HSSF CW, considering the complex interplay with EOC physicochemical properties. Insights into microbial community dynamics underscore the importance of taxonomic and functional diversity in assessing CW effectiveness. This knowledge aids in optimizing HSSF CWs for sustainable wastewater treatment, EOC removal, and ecological risk assessment, ultimately contributing to environmental protection.

Occurrence of Pharmaceutical Micropollutants in Lake Nahuel Huapi, Argentine Patagonia

Tourism is one of the most important activities for the economy of Nor Patagonia Argentina. In Bariloche City, located on the shores of Lake Nahuel Huapi, both the permanent and the temporary populations have increased significantly in recent decades, and this has not necessarily been accompanied by an improvement in sewage networks. Emerging micropollutants such as pharmaceutical compounds reach aquatic systems directly, in the absence of a domestic sewage network, or through effluents from wastewater treatment plants (WWTP), which do not efficiently remove these substances and represent a major threat to the environment. Therefore, the objective of our study was to monitor the presence of pharmaceutical compounds discharged both through wastewater effluents and diffusely from housing developments into Lake Nahuel Huapi. The results obtained demonstrate the presence of pharmaceuticals in Lake Nahuel Huapi with concentrations ranging from not detectable (ND) to 110.6 ng L-1 (caffeine). The highest pharmaceutical concentration recorded in WWTP influent corresponded to caffeine (41728 ng L-1), and the lowest concentration was paracetamol (18.8 ng L-1). The removal efficiency of pharmaceuticals in the WWTP was calculated, and ranged from 0% for carbamazepine to 66% for ciprofloxacin. This antibiotic showed the lowest % of attenuation (73%) in Lake Nahuel Huapi. These results on the occurrence of a wide variety of pharmaceuticals are the first generated in Patagonia, representing a regional baseline for this type of micropollutant and valuable information for the subsequent design of removal strategies for emerging pharmaceutical pollutants in surface water. Adsorptive removal of diclofenac sodium from aqueous solution by highly efficient metal organic framework (UiO-66)/multi-walled carbon nanotube composite

In the current study, synthesis and use of a novel adsorbent (composite in nature) are presented for treatment of one of the most commonly found pharmaceutical compound, viz, diclofenac sodium (DCF) in waste water. Synthesis of the composite adsorbent was done by hydrothermal method metal organic framework (MOF) based on Zr metal and multi-walled carbon nanotube (MWCNT). The composite adsorbent is termed as UiO-66/MWCNT. The confirmation of successful synthesis of the adsorbent is done with the help of sophisticated characterization techniques like FTIR, XRD, zeta potential analyser, and SEM. The synthesized composite adsorbent is found to have good adsorption capacity for DCF. The experiments related to the process of adsorption were done in batch mode and the significance of various operating parameters affecting the specific uptake of DCF. Maximum adsorption is observed at 3 pH (acidic condition) when the initial concentration of DCF and adsorbent dose was 30 mg/L and 100 mg/L, respectively. The Langmuir isotherm model best describes the process of adsorption with a maximum adsorption capacity of 256.41 mg/g. Experimental results obtained through the studies conducted related to the kinetics displayed that the process followed pseudo-second order model, and intraparticle studies suggested that diffusion through pores controls the rate. Thermodynamic studies suggest that the adsorption of DCF on UiO-66/MWCNT was completely spontaneous with ΔH = -22.089 kJ/mol. The possible mechanism for the adsorptive removal of DCF through UiO-66/MWCNT as found from this study is electrostatic interaction.
