Electroactive Modified Carbon Nanotube Filter for Simultaneous Detoxification and Sequestration of Sb(III)

Facile synthesis of Bi3O(OH)(AsO4)2 and simultaneous photocatalytic oxidation and adsorption of Sb(III) from wastewater

Antimony (Sb) decontamination in water is necessary owing to the worsening pollution which seriously threatens human life safety. Designing bismuth-based photocatalysts with hydroxyls have attracted growing interest because of the broad bandgap and enhanced separation efficiency of photogenerated electron/hole pairs. Until now, the available photocatalysis information regarding bismuth-based photocatalysts with hydroxyls has remained scarce and the contemporary report has been largely limited to Bi3O(OH)(PO4)2 (BOHP). Herein, Bi3O(OH)(AsO4)2 (BOHAs), a novel ultraviolet photocatalyst, was fabricated via the co-precipitation method for the first time, and developed to simultaneous photocatalytic oxidation and adsorption of Sb(III). The rate constant of Sb(III) removal by the BOHAs was 32.4, 3.0, and 4.3 times higher than those of BiAsO4, BOHP, and TiO2, respectively, indicating that the introduction of hydroxyls could increase the removal of Sb(III). Additionally, the crucial operational parameters affecting the adsorption performance (catalyst dosage, concentration, pH, and common anions) were investigated. The BOHAs maintained 85% antimony decontamination of the initial yield after five successive cycles of photocatalysis. The Sb(III) removal involved photocatalytic oxidation of adsorbed Sb(III) and subsequent adsorption of the yielded Sb(V). With the acquired knowledge, we successfully applied the photocatalyst for antimony removal from industrial wastewater. In addition, BOHAs could also be powerful photocatalysts in the photodegradation of organic pollutants studies of which are ongoing. It reveals an effective strategy for synthesizing bismuth-based photocatalysts with hydroxyls and enhancing pollutants' decontamination.

Electrochemical filtration for drinking water purification: A review on membrane materials, mechanisms and roles

Electrochemical filtration can not only enrich low concentrations of pollutants but also produce reactive oxygen species to interact with toxic pollutants with the assistance of a power supply, making it an effective strategy for drinking water purification. In addition, the application of electrochemical filtration facilitates the reduction of pretreatment procedures and the use of chemicals, which has outstanding potential for maximizing process simplicity and reducing operating costs, enabling the production of safe drinking water in smaller installations. In recent years, the research on electrochemical filtration has gradually increased, but there has been a lack of attention on its application in the removal of low concentrations of pollutants from low conductivity water. In this review, membrane substrates and electrocatalysts used to improve the performance of electrochemical membranes are briefly summarized. Meanwhile, the application prospects of emerging single-atom catalysts in electrochemical filtration are also presented. Thereafter, several electrochemical advanced oxidation processes coupled with membrane filtration are described, and the related working mechanisms and their advantages and shortcomings used in drinking water purification are illustrated. Finally, the roles of electrochemical filtration in drinking water purification are presented, and the main problems and future perspectives of electrochemical filtration in the removal of low concentration pollutants are discussed.

Carbon nanotube-wastewater treatment nexus: Where are we heading to?

Water treatment is crucial in solving the rising people's appetite for water and global water shortages. Carbon nanotubes (CNTs) have considerable promise for water treatment because of their adjustable and distinctive arbitrary, physical, as well as chemical characteristics. This illustrates the benefits and risks of integrating CNT into the traditional water treatment resource. Due to their outstanding adsorbent ability and chemical and mechanical properties, CNTs have gained global consideration in environmental applications. The desalination and extraction capability of CNT were improved due to chemical or physical modifications in pure CNTs by various functional groups. The CNT-based composites have many benefits, such as antifouling performance, high selectivity, and increased water permeability. Nevertheless, their full-scale implementations are still constrained by their high costs. Functionalized CNTs and their promising nanocomposites to eliminate contaminants are advised for marketing and extensive water/wastewater treatment.

Sustainable degradation of pollutants, generation of electricity and hydrogen evolution via photocatalytic fuel cells: An Inclusive Review

Environmental pollution and energy crisis have recently become one of the major global concerns. Insincere discharge of massive amount of organic and inorganic wastes into the aqueous bodies causes serious impact on our environment. However, these organic substances are significant sources of carbon and energy that could be sustainably utilized rather than being discarded. Photocatalytic fuel cell (PFC) is a smart and novel energy conversion device that has the ability to achieve dual benefits: degrading the organic contaminants and simultaneously generating electricity, thereby helping in environmental remediation. This article presents a detailed study of the recent advancements in the development of PFC systems and focuses on the fundamental working principles of PFCs. The degradation of various common organic and inorganic contaminants including dyes and antibiotics with simultaneous power generation and hydrogen evolution has been outlined. The impact of various operational factors on the PFC activity has also been briefly discussed. Moreover, it provides an overview of the design guidelines of the different PFC systems that has been developed recently. It also includes a mention of the materials employed for the construction of the photo electrodes and highlights the major limitations and relevant research scopes that are anticipated to be of interest in the days to come. The review is intended to serve as a handy resource for researchers and budding scientists opting to work in this area of PFC devices.

Comprehensive oxidative process for the removal of antimony from the surfaces of nuclear reactor coolant systems

An oxidative process using hydrogen peroxide for the dissolution of metallic antimony, stripping of the dissolved antimony ions, and the compatibility of the oxidative process with the structural materials present in the coolant systems of nuclear reactors have been investigated. This process has direct application for the removal of antimony activity and thereby reducing the radiation exposure hazard to the operating personnel. The rate of dissolution of metallic antimony increased in the presence of hydrogen peroxide. The re-deposition of dissolved antimony on the oxide coated carbon steel coupons was ≤0.02 mg/cm². Three substrates investigated, namely, strong base anion exchange resin and two chitosan-TiO₂ based substrates, for the removal of dissolved antimony were equally efficient. The process could dissolve antimony without any significant re-deposition on the oxide coated carbon steel surface and could dissolve antimony incorporated in the oxide film of zircaloy. Corrosion compatibility of relevant alloys, namely, carbon steel, incoloy-800, Zr2·5Nb and monel-400, at pH 10.2 and 9.0, showed that only monel-400 underwent pitting type of attack at pH 10.2.

Effect of the presence of various natural organic matters on anodic oxidation of electrified carbon nanotube membrane

The widespread adoption of electrified carbon nanotube membranes (ECM) requires to better understand process effectiveness according to limiting phenomena of natural organic matters (NOMs). In this study, the influences of various NOM fractions were investigated on the oxidative degradation of Rhodamine B (RhB) in ECM. The results showed the decolorizing efficiencies of RhB in the presence of humic acid (HA) were still above 96%, while bovine serum albumin (BSA) reduced firstly and then increased the decolorizing efficiencies of RhB. The decolorizing efficiencies of RhB with alginate (AA) were over 98% at the first 15 min but decreased gradually to 76% after 150 min. These different performances of HA, BSA and AA were mainly due to their influences on the electrochemical reactivity characterization of ECM. ECM with the BSA depositing layer showed the highest exchange current density (j₀), while the AA depositing layer restrained electron-transfer activity of ECM. Cyclic voltammetry (CV) experiments showed that the partial electrooxidation of BSA would occur in ECM with its degradation product observed in the effluent. The variation of electrochemical reactivity characterization of ECM resulted into its electri-oxidation and electri-adsorption rates to be the largest with BSA, followed by AA and HA.

Quinone-mediated Sb removal from sulfate-rich wastewater by anaerobic granular sludge: Performance and mechanisms

Antimony (Sb) is a typical pollutant in sulfate-rich industrial wastewater. This study investigated the Sb removal efficiency in sulfate-rich water by anaerobic granular sludge (AnGS) and the stimulation of amended anthraquinone-2-sulfonate (AQS). Results showed that 89.0% of 5 mg/L Sb(V) was reduced by AnGS within 24 h, along with the observed first accumulation (up to 552.2 μg/L) and then precipitation of Sb(Ш); coexistence of 2 g/L sulfate inhibited the removal of Sb(V) by 71.4% within 24 h, along with gradual accumulation of Sb(Ш) by 3257.4 μg/L, indicating the potential competition of adsorption sites and electron donors between Sb(V) and sulfate. Amendment of 31 mg/L AQS successfully removed the inhibition from sulfate, contributing to 99.5% Sb(V) removal and minimum Sb(Ш) accumulation in Sb(V) + sulfate+AQS group. Further test results suggested that Sb(V) removal by AnGS was mainly through dissimilatory reduction instead of bio-sorption, while Sb(Ш) removal mainly relied on instant bio-sorption by AnGS followed by precipitation in the form of Sb₂O₃ and Sb₂S₃. Extracellular Polymeric Substances (EPS) characterization showed that AQS promoted the accumulation of Sb(V) and Sb(Ш) in EPS. High-throughput sequencing analysis showed the enrichment of sulfate-reducing bacteria (SRB) in Sb(V) + sulfate group and suppressed SRB growth in Sb(V) + sulfate+AQS group.

A critical review on classifications, characteristics, and applications of electrically conductive membranes for toxic pollutant removal from water: Comparison between composite and inorganic electrically conductive membranes

Research efforts have recently been directed at developing electrically conductive membranes (EMs) for pressure-driven membrane separation processes to remove effectively the highly toxic pollutants from water. EMs serve as both the filter and the electrode during filtration. With the assistance of a power supply, EMs can considerably improve the toxic pollutant removal efficiency and even realize chemical degradation to reduce their toxicity. Organic-inorganic composite EMs and inorganic EMs show remarkable differences in characteristics, removal mechanisms, and application situations. Understanding their differences is highly important to guide the future design of EMs for specific pollutant removal from water. However, reviews concerning the differences between composite and inorganic EMs are still lacking. In this review, we summarize the classifications, fabrication techniques, and characteristics of composite and inorganic EMs. We also elaborate on the removal mechanisms and performances of EMs toward recalcitrant organic pollutants and toxic inorganic ions in water. The comparison between composite and inorganic EMs is emphasized particularly in terms of the membrane characteristics (pore size, permeability, and electrical conductivity), application situations, and underlying removal mechanisms. Finally, the energy consumption and durability of EMs are evaluated, and future perspectives are presented.

Immobilization mechanism of antimony by applying zirconium-manganese oxide in soil

Antimony (Sb) accumulation in soil poses great potential risk to ecological environment, and its mobilization, transformation and bioavailability are controlled by its fractions and species. Hence, it is important to develop functional materials with both adsorption and oxidation that achieve detoxification and control the mobilization of Sb. In this study, the synthesized zirconium‑manganese oxide (ZrMn) could extremely promoted the transformation of antimonite [Sb(III)] to antimonate [Sb(V)], induced the bioavailable Sb shift to well-crystallized (hydr)oxides of Mn and residual fractions, and further reduced mobility and bioavailability Sb in soil. The sorption of ZrMn to Sb(III) and antimonate Sb(V) were affected by interfering ions, and to Sb(III) was a heterogeneous adsorption process. Spectroscopic characterization of XPS and FTIR suggested exchange between the hydroxyl groups and Sb was crucial in its retain and forming an electronegative inner-sphere mononuclear or binuclear bridging compound. The oxidation induced the transformation of Mn species in ZrMn, generated Mn(II) and Mn(III) exposing more reactive sites conducive to oxidation and adsorption, thus Mn oxides has a higher adsorption capacity for Sb(III). However, the Zr oxides of ZrMn presented adsorption rather than oxidation. The application of ZrMn could realize the dual effect of Sb oxidation detoxification and adsorption immobilization in soil, which provided references for Sb contaminated soil remediation.

Facile preparation of novel magnetic mesoporous FeMn binary oxides from Mn encapsulated carboxymethyl cellulose-Fe(III) hydrogel for antimony removal from water

Effective removal of Sb(III) and Sb(V) has long been an urgent task for protecting human health and environment. In this study, novel magnetic mesoporous FeMn binary oxides (MMFMs) were fabricated via calcinating the Mn encapsulated carboxymethyl cellulose-Fe(III) hydrogel, and the structure of MMFMs were closely related to the Fe:Mn ratio. Owing to the mesoporous structure together with synergistic effect of FeMn binary component, the MMFMs exhibited excellent mass transfer and adsorption ability to Sb(III) and Sb(V). MMFM₃ achieved a maximum Sb(III) and Sb(V) adsorption capacity of 281.5 and 204.6 mg/g, respectively. Co-existing anions of Cl^-, NO₃^- and SO₄^2- exhibited marginal influence on the adsorption for both Sb(III) and Sb(V), except the PO₄^3- for Sb(III) and SiO₃^2- or PO₄^3- for Sb(V). X-ray photoelectron spectroscopic investigation revealed that high valence Mn(IV) was mainly responsible for the oxidation transformation of the highly toxic Sb(III) into less toxic Sb(V), while the FeO_x content played major role for the adsorption of Sb(V). The generated inner-sphere FeOSb complex between Fe-OH groups and Sb(III/V) dominantly contributed to the removal of Sb(III/V). Overall, mesoporous structure, magnetic separation ability, excellent adsorption performance together with exceptional regeneration properties demonstrated the great potential of MMFMs for Sb(III/V) remediation.

Applications of Polymeric Membranes with Carbon Nanotubes: A Review

Nanomaterials have been commonly employed to enhance the performance of polymeric membrane materials that are used in several industrial applications. Carbon nanotubes (CNTs) have gained notable attention over the years for use in membrane technology due to their anti-biofouling properties, salt rejection capability, exceptional electrical conductivity, and mechanical properties. This paper aims to discuss some of the recent applications of CNTs in membrane technology and their effect on a larger scale. The paper reviews successful case studies of incorporation of CNTs in membranes and their impact on water purification, desalination, gas separations, and energy storage, in an effort to provide a better understanding of their capabilities. Regarding the future trends of this technology, this review emphasizes improving the large-scale production processes and addressing environmental and health-related hazards of CNTs during production and usage.

Sustainable and efficient technologies for removal and recovery of toxic and valuable metals from wastewater: Recent progress, challenges, and future perspectives

Due to their numerous effects on human health and the natural environment, water contamination with heavy metals and metalloids, caused by their extensive use in various technologies and industrial applications, continues to be a huge ecological issue that needs to be urgently tackled. Additionally, within the circular economy management framework, the recovery and recycling of metals-based waste as high value-added products (VAPs) is of great interest, owing to their high cost and the continuous depletion of their reserves and natural sources. This paper reviews the state-of-the-art technologies developed for the removal and recovery of metal pollutants from wastewater by providing an in-depth understanding of their remediation mechanisms, while analyzing and critically discussing the recent key advances regarding these treatment methods, their practical implementation and integration, as well as evaluating their advantages and remaining limitations. Herein, various treatment techniques are covered, including adsorption, reduction/oxidation, ion exchange, membrane separation technologies, solvents extraction, chemical precipitation/co-precipitation, coagulation-flocculation, flotation, and bioremediation. A particular emphasis is placed on full recovery of the captured metal pollutants in various reusable forms as metal-based VAPs, mainly as solid precipitates, which is a powerful tool that offers substantial enhancement of the remediation processes' sustainability and cost-effectiveness. At the end, we have identified some prospective research directions for future work on this topic, while presenting some recommendations that can promote sustainability and economic feasibility of the existing treatment technologies.

Simultaneous adsorption and oxidation of Sb(III) from water by the pH-sensitive superabsorbent polymer hydrogel incorporated with Fe-Mn binary oxides composite

In this work, the superabsorbent polymer hydrogel (SPH) of Poly(potassium acrylate-co-acrylamide (PPAA)) incorporated with Fe-Mn binary oxides (FMBOs) was synthesized and used for the removal of Sb(III) from water. Characterization analysis proved that FMBO₃ was successfully encapsulated into the SPH. The Fe/Mn oxide species in the composite SPH comprised FeO(OH), Fe₂O₃, MnO(OH), and MnO₂. The functional groups including N-H, -OH, carboxy as well as Fe atoms were confirmed adsorption sites through ligand exchange and inner-sphere complexes formation. Mn oxides can partially oxidize Sb(III) to Sb(V). Compared with the pseudo-first-order model, the pseudo-second-order model could better describe the adsorption kinetics. And the swelling degree of the composite SPH had a positive impact on the removal rate. The Langmuir-Freundlich model was the most suitable isotherm model to analyze the experimental data. According to thermodynamic parameters, the adsorption process was a spontaneous exothermic reaction. The maximum adsorption capacity of the composite SPH for Sb(III) could be up to 105.59 mg/g at 288 K. In addition, a stable removal rate can be achieved over a wide pH range of 3-10, with little metal leaching even under acidic conditions. Furthermore, coexisting ions and DOM displayed an insignificant influence on the adsorption of Sb(III).

Synthesis of nano-silica and biogenic iron (oxyhydr)oxides composites mediated by iron oxidizing bacteria to remove antimonite and antimonate from aqueous solution: Performance and mechanisms

Removal of antimony from wastewater is essential because of its potential harm to the environment and human health. Nano-silica and biogenic iron (oxyhydr)oxides composites (BS-Fe) were prepared by iron oxidizing bacteria (IOB) mediation and the batch adsorption experiments were applied to investigate antimonite (Sb(III)) and antimonate (Sb(V)) removal behaviors. By contrast, the synthetic BS-Fe calcined at 400 ℃ (BS-Fe-400) exhibited a large specific surface area (157.353 m²/g). The maximum adsorption capacities of BS-Fe-400 were 102.10 and 337.31 mg/g for Sb(III) and Sb(V), respectively, and experimental data fit well to the Langmuir isotherm and Temkin models, and followed the pseudo-second order kinetic model. Additionally, increasing pH promoted Sb(III) adsorption, while inhibited the adsorption of Sb(V), indicating that electrostatic attraction made a contribution to Sb(V) adsorption. Moreover, different co-existing ions showed different effects on adsorption. Characterization techniques of FTIR and XPS indicated that the main functional groups involved in the adsorption were -OH, C-O, CO, C-C, etc. and Sb(III) and Sb(V) may bind to iron (oxyhydr)oxides via the formation of inner-sphere complexes. The present work revealed that the synthetic BS-Fe-400 by nano-silica and biogenic iron (oxyhydr)oxides held great application potential in antimony removal from wastewater.

Reduced graphene oxide (rGO) aerogel: Efficient adsorbent for the elimination of antimony (III) and (V) from wastewater

3D porous, thin sheet-like rGO aerogel was fabricated to explore its antimony (Sb) removal potential from wastewater. Langmuir isothermal and pseudo-second-order kinetic model best-suited the adsorption process. The maximum adsorption capacities were 168.59 and 206.72 mg/g for Sb (III and V) at pH 6.0 respectively. The thermodynamic parameters designated the process to be thermodynamically spontaneous, endothermic reaction, a result of dissociative chemisorption. The rGO aerogel bestowed good selectively among competing ions and reusability with 95% efficiency. rGO posed excellent practicability with Sb-spiked tap water and fixed-bed column experiments showing 97.6% of Sb (III) (3.6 μg/L) and 96.8% of Sb (V) (4.7 μg/L) removal from tap water and from fixed column bed experiments breakthrough volumes (BV) for the Sb (III) and Sb (V) ions were noted to be 540 BV and 925 BV respectively, until 5 ppb, which are below the requirement of MCL for Sb in drinking water (6 μg/L). XPS and DFT analyses explained adsorption mechanism and depicted a higher affinity of Sb (V) towards rGO surface than Sb (III).

Electrochemical removal of tetrabromobisphenol A by fluorine-doped titanium suboxide electrochemically reactive membrane

This study reports fluorine-doped titanium suboxide anode for electrochemical mineralization of hydrophobic micro-contaminant, tetrabromobisphenol A. Fluorinated TiSO anode promoted electro-generated hydroxyl radicals (•OH) with higher selectivity and activity, due to increased O₂ evolution potential and more loosely interaction with hydrophobic electrode surface. For electro-oxidation process, fluorine doping had an insignificant impact on outer-sphere reaction and exerted inhibition on inner-sphere reaction, as indicated by cyclic voltammogram performed on Ru(NH₃)₆^3+/2+, Fe(CN)₆^3-/4- and Fe^3+/2+ redox couple. This facilitated electrochemical conversion of TBBPA and intermediates via more efficient outer-sphere reaction and hydroxylation route. Additionally, generated O₂ micro-bubbles could be stabilized on hydrophobic F-doped TiSO anode, which extended the three-phase boundary available for interfacial enrichment of TBBPA and subsequent mineralization. Under action of these comprehensive factors, 0.5% F-doped TiSO electrochemically reactive membrane could achieve 99.7% mineralization of TBBPA upon energy consumption of 0.52 kWh m^-3 at current density of 7.8 ± 0.24 mA cm^-2 (3.75 V vs SHE) and flow rate of 1628 LHM based on flow-through electrolysis. The modified anode exhibited superior performances compared with un-modified one with more efficient TBBPA removal, less toxic intermediate accumulation and lower energy consumption. The results may have important implications for electrochemical removal and detoxification of hydrophobic micro-pollutants.

Insights into adsorptive removal of antimony contaminants: Functional materials, evaluation and prospective

The application of antimony containing compounds in the industry has generated considerable antimony contaminants, which requires to develop methods that are as efficient as possible to remove antimony from water in the view of human health. The adsorption is among the most high-efficiency and reliable purification methods for hazardous materials due to the simple operation, convenient recycling and low cost. Herein, this review systematically summarizes the functional materials that are used to adsorb antimony from water, including metal (oxides) based materials, carbon-based materials, MOFs and molecular sieves, layered double hydroxides, natural materials, and organic-inorganic hybrids. The iron-based adsorbents stand out among these adsorbents because of their excellent performance. Moreover, the interaction between antimony and different functional materials is discussed in detail, while the inner-sphere complexation, hydrogen bond as well as ligand exchange are the main impetus during antimony adsorption. In addition, the desorption methods in adsorbents recycling are also comprehensively summarized. Furthermore, we propose an adsorption capacity balanced evaluation function (ABEF) based on the reported results to evaluate the performance of the antimony adsorption materials for both Sb(III) and Sb(V), as antimony usually has two valence forms of Sb(III) and Sb(V) in wastewater. Another original insight in this review is that we put forward a potential application prospect for the antimony-containing waste adsorbents. The feasible future development includes the utilization of the recycled antimony-containing waste adsorbents in catalysis and energy storage, and this will provide a green and sustainable pathway for both antimony removal and resourization.

Electrochemical recovery and high value-added reutilization of heavy metal ions from wastewater: Recent advances and future trends

Wastewater treatment for heavy metals is currently transitioning from pollution remediation towards resource recovery. As a controllable and environment-friendly method, electrochemical technologies have recently gained significant attention. However, there is a lack of systematic and goal oriented summarize of electrochemical metal recovery techniques, which has inhibited the optimized application of these methods. This review aims at recent advances in electrochemical metal recovery techniques, by comparing different electrochemical recovery methods, attempts to target recycling heavy metal resources with minimize energy consumption, boost recovery efficiency and realize the commercial application. In this review, different electrochemical recovery methods (including E-adsorption recovery, E-oxidation recovery, E-reduction recovery, and E-precipitation recovery) for recovering heavy metals are introduced, followed an analysis of their corresponding mechanisms, influencing factors, and recovery efficiencies. In addition, the mass transfer efficiency can be promoted further through optimizing electrodes and reactors, and multiple technologies (photo-electrochemical and sono-electrochemical) could to be used synergistically improve recovery efficiencies. Finally, the most promising directions for electrochemical recovery of heavy metals are discussed along with the challenges and future opportunities of electrochemical technology in recycling heavy metals from wastewater.

Simultaneous decontamination of arsenite and antimonite using an electrochemical CNT filter functionalized with nanoscale goethite

The co-presence of arsenic (As) and antimony (Sb) in water bodies has been commonly reported. The toxicity of As and Sb varies with different speciation. Herein, we designed a dual-functional electrochemical filter toward "one-step" detoxification and sequestration of highly toxic As(III) and Sb(III). The key to this technology is a functional anodic filter consists of nanoscale goethite and carbon nanotubes (CNT). Results showed that 97.9% As(III) and 91.9% Sb(III) transformation and 86.4% As_total and 70.1% Sb_total removal efficiency can be obtained over 2 h continuous filtration under optimized conditions. The As_total removal kinetics and efficiency enhanced with flow rate and applied voltage (e.g., the As_total removal efficiency increased from 62.9% at 0 V to 86.4% at 2.5 V). This enhancement in kinetics and efficiency can be explained by the synergistic effects of the flow-through design, plentiful exposed sorption sites, electrochemical reactivity, and nanoscale goethite. Moreover, the proposed technology works effectively across a wide pH range. Only negligible inhibition was observed in the presence of nitrate, chloride, and carbonate. Exhausted hybrid filters can be effectively regenerated by using chemical wash with NaOH solution. This study not only revealed the different adsorption behaviors of As(III) and Sb(III) on the hybrid filters, but also provided new insights into rational design of continuous-flow filters toward simultaneous decontamination of As(III) and Sb(III).

A novel electrocatalytic filtration system with carbon nanotube supported nanoscale zerovalent copper toward ultrafast oxidation of organic pollutants

In this study, we designed an integrated electrochemical filtration system for catalytic activation of peroxymonosulfate (PMS) and degradation of aqueous microcontaminants. Composites of carbon nanotube (CNT) and nanoscale zero valence copper (nZVC) were developed to serve as high-performance catalysts, electrode and filtration media simultaneously. We observed both radical and nonradical reaction pathways, which collectively contributed to the degradation of model pollutants. Congo red was completely removed via a single-pass through the nZVCCNT filter (τ <2 s) at neutral pH. The rapid kinetics of Congo red degradation were maintained across a wide pH range (from 3.0-7.0), in complicated matrixes (e.g., tap water and lake water), and for the degradation of a wide array of persistent organic contaminants. The superior activity of nZVCCNT stems from the boosted redox cycles of Cu²⁺/Cu⁺ in the presence of an external electric field. The flow-through design remarkably outperformed the conventional batch system due to the convection-enhanced mass transport. Mechanism studies suggested that the carbonyl group and electrophilic oxygen of CNT served as electron donor and electron acceptor, respectively, to activate PMS to generate •OH and ¹O₂via one-electron transport. The electron-deficient Cu atoms are prone to react with PMS via surface hydroxyl group to produce reactive intermediates (Cu²⁺-O-O-SO₃^-), and then ¹O₂ will be generated by breaking the coordination bond of the metastable intermediate. The study will provide a green strategy for the remediation of organic pollution by a highly efficient and integrated system based on catalytic oxidation, electrochemistry, and nano-filtration techniques.

Boosting adsorption of heavy metal ions in wastewater through solar-driven interfacial evaporation of chemically-treated carbonized wood

Once the adsorbent is selected, almost introducing larger specific surface area and more surface functional groups becomes the only way to improve its adsorption performance. However, this approach is generally limited in practical application for intricate and costly engineering steps. Herein, we provided a novel avenue for boosting adsorption activities towards specific metal ions in wastewater. Solar-driven interfacial water evaporation produces the localized temperature field and concentration gradient of metal ions inside small pores, endowing with a new sorption mechanism. By using chemically-treated carbonized wood as all-in-one solar absorption and metal ion adsorption system, we achieved higher water evaporation rate and heavy metal ion removal efficiency than carbonization-only wood reported previously. In particular, this system exhibited a strong dependence of specific metal ion adsorption capacity on solar intensity. Pb²⁺ adsorption capacity was enhanced by over 225% with the solar intensity increased to 3.0 kW·m^-2. This could originate from the formed temperature field localized specially on the surface of adsorbents that not only induces Pb²⁺ concentration gradient near to solid-liquid interface but also activate inactive adsorption sites. Besides, the chemical-treated & carbonized wood showed excellent cyclic stability and can be directly utilized for wastewater treatment, recovery and reuse.

Bioinspired synthesis of fiber-shaped silk fibroin-ferric oxide nanohybrid for superior elimination of antimonite

Bioinspired fibrous materials have emerged as a unique class of matrix for fabrication of fiber-shaped nanomaterial assemblies. Here, we report a novel functional fiber-shaped nanohybrid for efficient removal of antimonite via in situ synthesis of ferric oxides anchored to silk nanofibril. The silk nanofibril matrix played important roles in the growth of ferric oxides via metal-ligand interactions. The achieved nanocomposites had high surface areas and activity with more functional groups, contributing to superior antimonite elimination. The nanocomposite achieved a maximum removal capacity of 159.9 mg/g toward antimonite. And the common interfering ions of SO₄^2-, NO₃-, CO₃^2-, PO₄^3- and SiO₃^2- exhibited negligible influence on antimonite removal. The mechanism study point that two factors are closely involved: surface complexation and hydrogen bonding. Benefiting from the low cost and environmental-friendly nature of silk fibroin as well as excellent removal capacity and high selectivity, it suggests that the nanohybrids might be promising for antimonite extraction from contaminated water.

Prospects of an Electroactive Carbon Nanotube Membrane toward Environmental Applications

Rapid population growth and industrialization have driven the emergence of advanced electrochemical and membrane technologies for environmental and energy applications. Electrochemical processes have potential for chemical transformations, chloralkali disinfection, and energy storage. Membrane separations have potential for gas, fluid, and chemical purification. Electrochemical and membrane technologies are often used additively in the same unit process, e.g., the chloroalkali process where a membrane is used to separate cathodic and anodic products from scavenging each other. However, to access the maximal potential requires intimate hybridization of the two technologies into an electroactive membrane. The combination of the two discrete technologies results in a range of synergisms such as reduced footprint, increased processing kinetics, reduced fouling, and increased energy efficiency.Due to their high specific surface area, excellent electric conductivity, and desirable robustness, 1D carbon nanotubes (CNTs) hold promise for many applications over a range of industry sectors such as a base material for electrodes and membranes. Importantly, CNT morphology and surface chemistry can be rationally modified and fine-tuning of these CNT physicochemical properties can enhance their functionality toward practical applications. The CNT 1D form allows assembly of a stable thin-film fibrous network by a variety of facile techniques. These CNT networks have pore sizes in the range of 10-500 nm (d_pore ∼ 6-8d_CNT) and thicknesses of 10-200 μm, both similar to those of classical polymer membranes, thus allowing for straightforward incorporation into commercial membrane devices modified for electroactivity inclusion.In this Account, CNTs and their composites are used as model electroactive porous materials to exemplify the design strategies and environmental applications of emerging electroactive membrane technology. The Account begins with a brief summary of the electroactive membrane design principles and flow processes developed by our groups. After the methodology section, a detailed discussion is provided on the underlying physical-chemical mechanisms that govern the electroactive membrane technology. Then we summarize our findings on the rational design of several flow-through electrochemical CNT filtration systems focused on either anodic oxidation reactions or cathodic reduction reactions. Subsequently, we discuss a recently discovered electrochemical valence-state-regulation strategy that is capable to detoxify and sequester heavy metal ions. Finally, we conclude the Account with our perspectives toward future development of the electroactive membrane technology.

Limonene Derivative of Spherosilicate as a Polylactide Modifier for Applications in 3D Printing Technology

The first report of using limonene derivative of a spherosilicate as a modifier of polylactide used for 3D printing and injection moulding is presented. The paper presents the use of limonene-functionalized spherosilicate derivative as a functional additive. The study compared the material characteristics of polylactide modified with SS-Limonene (0.25-5.0% w/w) processed with traditional injection moulding and 3D printing (FFF, FDM). A significant improvement in the processing properties concerning rheology, inter-layer adhesion, and mechanical properties was achieved, which translated into the quality of the print and reduction of waste production. Moreover, the paper describes the elementary stages of thermal transformations of the obtained hybrid systems.

Abiotic mediation of common ions on the co-exposure of CeO2 NPs with Sb (III) or Sb (V) to Glycine max (Linn.) Merrill. (Soybean): Impacts on uptake, accumulation and physiochemical characters

With the most active Sb mines, the "dominance" on Sb production of China lead to increasingly release and omnipresence of Sb in environment through mining activities as well as the life cycle of Sb-containing productions. The introduction of engineered nanoparticles (ENPs) accidentally or intentionally (such as NP-containing sludge as fertilizer) might increase the probability of co-exposed with Sb to plants. In this study, CeO2 NPs, one of the most widely used nanomaterials in industries with potential oxidizing or reducing properties, was selected and co-exposed with Sb (III) or Sb (V) to investigate their mutual effects on uptake, accumulation and physiological effects in soybeans. The results showed that CeO2 NPs increased the Sb (III) and Sb (V) concentrations in roots by 36.7% and 14.0% respectively, while Sb (III) and Sb (V) inhibited the concentration of Ce in roots by 97.1% and 86.9% respectively. In addition, the impacts of extra common ions (Mn2+, Cu2+, Fe3+ and Zn2+) on the fate of Ce and Sb in soybeans in co-exposure of CeO2 NPs with Sb were investigated as well. Mn2+ and Fe3+ increased the accumulations of Ce and Sb (III) in the co-exposure of CeO2 NPs with Sb (III), but reduced that in the co-exposure of CeO2 NPs with Sb (V). Notably, the addition of Cu2+ and Zn2+ consistently increased the uptake and accumulation of Ce and Sb in the co-exposure treatments. Moreover, the effects of Sb on the dissolved portion of CeO2 NPs in soybean roots were also investigated. This study provided a perspective that extra ingredient (mineral elements, organic element or other nutrients) might regulated the interactions in ENPs-heavy metals-plants system which need further explorations.

Comparative removal of As(V) and Sb(V) from aqueous solution by sulfide-modified α-FeOOH

Efficient elimination of As(V) and Sb(V) from wastewater streams has long been a major challenge. Herein, sulfide-modified α-FeOOH adsorbent was fabricated via a simple sulfidation reaction for removing As(V) and Sb(V) from aqueous media. Compared with the pristine α-FeOOH, sulfide-modified α-FeOOH increased the adsorption of As(V) from 153.8 to 384.6 mg/g, and Sb(V) adsorption from 277.8 to 1111.1 mg/g. The enhanced adsorption of both As(V) and Sb(V) was maintained at the pH range from 2 to 11, and was not interfered by various coexisting anions such as Cl^-, SO₄^2-, NO₃^-, SiO₃^2- and PO₄^3-. The adsorption affinity increased from 0.0047 to 0.0915 and 0.0053 to 0.4091 for As(V) and Sb(V), respectively. X-ray photoelectron spectroscopic investigation demonstrated a reductive conversion of As(V) to As(III) during the adsorption process with sulfide-modified α-FeOOH, but with no obvious variation of Sb(V) speciation. While the removal mechanism for As(V) was reduction followed by adsorption via hydroxyl groups, mainly surface complexation was involved in the removal of Sb(V). This study presented a simple strategy to enhance the adsorption capacity and adsorption affinity of α-FeOOH toward As(V)/Sb(V) via sulfide-modification.

Efficient antimony removal by self-assembled core-shell nanocomposite of Co3O4@rGO and the analysis of its adsorption mechanism

Co₃O₄@rGO were facilely prepared by template free self-assemble in this study. The morphology of Co₃O₄@rGO was actiniaria-like core-shell structural nanocomposites. The formation mechanism of Co₃O₄@rGO core-shell nanocomposite was discussed according to its significant time-dependent morphology evolution course. To evaluate the application potential of Co₃O₄@rGO, its adsorption performance toward highly toxic antimony ions were studied. The Co₃O₄@rGO nanocomposite exhibit high anti-interference ability and high adsorption ability. The maximum adsorption capacities towards Sb(III) and Sb(V) are 151.04 and 165.51 mg/g, respectively. River water samples containing antimony violating the limit were used to evaluate the practical application of Co₃O₄@rGO, and high performance was achieved. The EU and China limits for antimony in drinking water can be met by using mesoporous Co₃O₄@rGO treating the actual river water samples with original antimony concentration lower than 50 μg/L. Adsorption isotherm, adsorption kinetics, pH and co-existing ions effects were also studied in details. The results indicate that mesoporous Co₃O₄@rGO is an excellent adsorbent for antimony removal. Mesoporous Co₃O₄@rGO nanocomposite is a potential candidate for antimony removal from waste water.

Enhanced removal of antimony in dyeing wastewater by mixing Fe3 O4 with manganese sand filter material

Wastewaters from the printing and dyeing industries contain many contaminants in particular antimony (Sb) that end up in the environment. Both manganese sand filter and Fe₃ O₄ have good removal effect on Sb, and are cheap and easy to obtain. We made a filter material by mechanically mixing the manganese sand filter material and ferro-ferric oxide (Fe₃ O₄ ). The Fe-Mn oxide filter material was analyzed by X-ray diffraction. We studied the filtration of real wastewater from a dyeing wastewater resource recovery facility in Suzhou, China, containing Sb at high concentration of 410 μg/L, using dynamic tests in adsorption columns during 7 days. We tested the effects of filter material volume filling ratio, the empty bed contact time (EBCT), pH, and back washing on the removal of Sb. Results show that the addition of Fe₃ O₄ enhanced the removal of Sb, reaching 85% of initial Sb. When the initial influent pH of the raw water is 3.0, the volume filling ratio of filter material is 60%, the EBCT is 20 min, and the developed dynamic Fe-Mn oxide filter has the best removal effect on Sb. Daily back washing of the filter keeps a Sb removal rate of about 80%. PRACTITIONER POINTS: A novel and cheap Fe-Mn oxide was developed for Sb removal from dyeing wastewater. A self-designed filter device was designed to verify performance of the low-cost material. Optimal design and operational parameters of the filtration process were determined.

Efficient solar hydrogen production coupled with organics degradation by a hybrid tandem photocatalytic fuel cell using a silicon-doped TiO2 nanorod array with enhanced electronic properties

A novel, unassisted, hybrid tandem photocatalytic fuel cell (HTPFC) is constructed by adhering a silicon solar cell (SSC) to the back of a highly-active silicon-doped TiO₂ nanorod array (STNR) for efficient solar hydrogen production coupled with organic compound degradation. The STNR with vertically arranged nanorods is prepared by a facile hydrothermal method and has improved charge transport properties and donor density due to the homogenously distributed silicon in the TiO₂ matrix. As a result, the STNR has a notably enhanced photocurrent density that is as high as ˜0.76 mA cm^-2 at 0.2 V vs Ag/AgCl, which is ˜271% of the photocurrent density of undoped sample. By combining the intriguing features of the STNR and SSC, the HTPFC shows a superior performance for tetracycline degradation and hydrogen production, with a removal ratio of 94.3% after 1.5 h of operation and an average hydrogen generation rate of ˜28.8 μmol h^-1 cm^-2. Compared to conventional PFCs, HTPFCs have improved light absorption and charge transfer, owing to the synergistic effect between the STNR and SSC. The results also indicate that the HTPFC is highly flexible, adaptable, and stable when treating wastewaters with various organics, and a wide range of pH values and salinities.

Simultaneous adsorption and oxidation of antimonite onto nano zero-valent iron sludge-based biochar: Indispensable role of reactive oxygen species and redox-active moieties

The nano zero-valent iron sludge-based biochar (nZVI-SBC) was prepared in this study to eliminate Sb(III) from aqueous solutions, which was characterized by BET, SEM, XRD, TEM, FTIR, XPS. Our results proved that the incorporated nZVI on SBC matrix could significantly enhance eliminating Sb(III), and the max-adsorption capacity (160.40 mg g^-1) can be achieved at pH = 4.8 ± 0.2 and temperature of 298 K. The effect of co-existing anions and natural organic matters on the Sb(III) adsorption efficiencies were systematically investigated. The surface complexation is the possible adsorption mechanisms by FTIR and XPS. Furthermore, mechanistic investigation revealed that •OH and hydroquinone radical (H-SQ•^-) could be the primary oxidants for the transformation of Sb(III) under oxic conditions, while 9,10-phenanthrene quinone radical (P-SQ•^-) were responsible under anoxic conditions. Thus, the enhanced elimination of Sb(III) from aqueous solution was ascribed to the combined adsorption and oxidation. The potential engineering application of nZVI-SBC can be proved through three actual water matrix experiments, including lake water, river water and acid mine drainage. Our present findings proved that nZVI-SBC could be a potential adsorbent, given the excellent performance in the adsorption processes, as well as the toxicity alleviating ability and economic advantages, especially under sub-surface water.

One-step Sb(III) decontamination using a bifunctional photoelectrochemical filter

Developing advanced technologies to achieve decontamination of emerging contaminants such as antimony (Sb) is highly demanded. Herein, we successfully designed a dual-functional photoelectrochemical filter system for "one-step" detoxification and sequestration of highly toxic Sb(III). The key to this technology is a photoelectrical-responsive CNT filter functionalized with nanoscale MIL-88B(Fe) photocatalysts. At 2.5 V and under illumination, a 97.7 ± 1.5 % Sb(III) transformation and a 92.9 ± 2.3 % Sb_total removal efficiency can be obtained using an optimal hybrid filter (e.g. CM(50:3)) over 2 h continuous filtration. This can be explained by the synergistic effects of the filter's flow-through design, photoelectrochemical reactivity, fine pore size, and plentiful exposed sorption sites. Various advanced characterization techniques validated the system efficacy. Improved Sb(III) removal kinetics were observed when compared with conventional batch system (97.5 % vs 75.8 %). A synergistic effect between photocatalytic (PC) and electrochemical (EC) process were identified (k_PEC =0.99 h^-1 >k_PC=0.21 h^-1 + k_EC =0.30 h^-1). EPR and photochemical characterizations suggested that hydroxyl radicals dominated the Sb(III) conversion. The proposed technology works effectively across a wide range of pH values and water matrixes. The outcomes of this study can facilitate mechanistic insights into photoelectrocatalysis and provide a promising nanotechnology for efficient Sb(III) decontamination.

Supported Atomically-Precise Gold Nanoclusters for Enhanced Flow-through Electro-Fenton

Gold (Au) has been considered catalytically inert for decades, but recent reports have described the ability of Au nanoparticles to catalyze H₂O₂ decomposition in the Haber-Weiss cycle. Herein, the design and demonstration of a flow-through electro-Fenton system based on an electrochemical carbon nanotube (CNT) filter functionalized with atomically precise Au nanoclusters (AuNCs) is described. The functionality of the device was then tested for its ability to catalyze antibiotic tetracycline degradation. In the functional filters, the Au core of AuNCs served as a high-performance Fenton catalyst; while the AuNCs ligand shells enabled CNT dispersion in aqueous solution for easy processing. The hybrid filter enabled in situ H₂O₂ production and catalyzed the subsequent H₂O₂ decomposition to HO·. The catalytic function of AuNCs lies in their ability to undergo redox cycling of Au⁺/Au⁰ under an electric field. The atomically precise AuNCs catalysts demonstrated superior catalytic activity to larger nanoparticles; while the flow-through design provided convection-enhanced mass transport, which yielded a superior performance compared to a conventional batch reactor. The adsorption behavior and decomposition pathway of H₂O₂ on the filter surfaces were simulated by density functional theory calculations. The research outcomes provided atomic-level mechanistic insights into the Au-mediated Fenton reaction.

Application of Fenton pre-oxidation, Ca-induced coagulation, and sludge reclamation for enhanced treatment of ultra-high concentration poly(vinyl alcohol) wastewater

Poly(vinyl alcohol) (PVA) wastewater contains up to 10,000 mg/L dissolved organic carbon. A concentration of this magnitude results in a high chemical oxygen demand (COD), which generates major problems for industrial wastewater treatment in general, and the textile and chemical industries, in particular. Thus, we propose a two-stage treatment process that uses Fenton pre-oxidation, coupled with Ca-induced coagulation, to reduce the PVA and COD wastewater concentration. The optimal concentrations of FeSO₄ and CaCl₂ per gram of PVA were 0.8 g/g-PVA and 4.0 g/g-PVA, respectively, which is significantly lower than that of other reported treatments. Due to successful oxidation, the long chains of PVA molecules were broken up and the OH groups were partially oxidized to COOH. During the coagulation stage, Ca²⁺ was able to efficiently bind with the PVA pre-oxidation products, thereby forming insoluble compounds. Given initial COD and PVA concentrations of 20,450 and 10,000 mg/L, respectively, a maximum of 81.3 % COD and 96.0 % PVA was removed following this two-stage procedure. Furthermore, the sludge residue was used to remove Sb(III) from the wastewater, achieving an Sb(III) adsorption capacity of 16.0 mg/g. Thus, this study provides new insight into affordable and effective treatment of high concentration PVA-containing wastewater.

A Bifunctional Electroactive Ti4O7-Based Membrane System for Highly Efficient Ammonia Decontamination

Herein, an electroactive filtration system, consisting of a Ti4O7 anode and a Pd-Cu co-modified nickel foam cathode, was developed and applied for the decontamination of ammonia from water. When assisted with an external electrical field, ClO• was generated on the surface of the Ti4O7 anode, which then reacted selectively with ammonia to generate N2. The anodic byproduct, NO3−, could also be reduced efficiently at the functional cathode to produce N2 as well. Electron paramagnetic resonance technique and radical scavenging tests synergistically verified the essential role of ClO• during the highly efficient ammonia conversion process. Relative to conventional batch systems, the developed flow-through design demonstrated enhanced ammonia conversion kinetics, thanks to the convection-enhanced mass transport. The proposed technology also showed desirable stability across a wide environmental matrix. This work provides new insights for the development of advanced and affordable continuous-flow systems towards effective decontamination of ammonia.

Ultra-rapid detoxification of Sb(III) using a flow-through electro-fenton system

Environmental pollution caused by antimony (Sb) has attracted worldwide attention recently. Here, we employed a flow-through electro-Fenton system for the rapid and efficient detoxification of highly toxic Sb(III). A FeOCl modified carbon nanotube (CNT) filter served as functional cathode, where FeOCl as nanocatalyst promoted the generation of HO by facilitating effective Fe³⁺/Fe²⁺ cycling. Upon application of a proper potential, an ultra-rapid conversion of Sb(III) to less toxic Sb(V) can be achieved in situ just by a single-pass filtration (>99% within 2 s). Compared with the conventional batch reactor, the proposed system demonstrated ultra-rapid Sb(III) detoxification kinetics due to the convection-enhanced mass transport. The proposed flow-through E-Fenton system works effectively across a wide pH range (e.g., 3-9). EPR technique and radical quenching experiments indicate that HO and HO₂ were the dominant radical species responsible for Sb(III) detoxification. At -0.4 V vs. Ag/AgCl, a >96.4% Sb(III) conversion efficiency still can be achieved when challenged with 500 μg L^-1 Sb(III)-spiked tap water. The as-produced Sb(V) can be removed effectively by another Sb(V)-specific CNT filter functionalized with nanoscale iron oxides. The outcome of this research provides a promising strategy by integrating state-of-the-art electro-Fenton, membrane separation, carboncatalysis and nanotechnology for detoxification of Sb(III) and other similar heavy metal ions in polluted water.

One-step phosphite removal by an electroactive CNT filter functionalized with TiO2/CeOx nanocomposites

Compared with phosphate (+5 valence), phosphite (HPO₃^2-/H₂PO₃^-, +3 valence) possesses higher solubility, and is more resistant to biotransformation. Herein, we designed a one-step electroactive filter technology for rapid and efficient phosphite removal. The filter consists of carbon nanotubes (CNT) and functionalized with nanoscale TiCe binary oxides. The phosphite removal kinetics and capacity increased with electric field (e.g., from 54.5% at 0 V to 75.6% at 2 V) and flow rate (e.g., from 63.1% at 1.5 mL/min to 81.2% at 6 mL/min). This can be attributed to synergistic effects of the filter's electrochemical reactivity, limited pore size, more exposed active sites and flow-through design. Meanwhile, phosphite can be converted to phosphate once adsorbed under electric field. The TiO₂/CeO_x-CNT filter could work effectively across a wide pH range, and the presence of various coexisting anions posed negligible impact on phosphite removal. Electrochemical characterizations verified the essential role of CeO_x and applied electric field, which synergistically accelerated electron transfer rate and increased charge capacity. The TiO₂/CeO_x-CNT filter can be regenerated effectively by chemical washing. The system efficacy was further supported by a comparable phosphite removal efficiency of 72.8% in actual lake water conditions. Therefore, this TiO₂/CeO_x-CNT filter technology is promising for mitigating the challenging issue of phosphite contamination from water bodies.

Mitigation of Membrane Fouling Using an Electroactive Polyether Sulfone Membrane

Membrane fouling is the bottleneck limiting the wide application of membrane processes. Herein, we adopted an electroactive polyether sulfone (PES) membrane capable of mitigating fouling by various negatively charged foulants. To evaluate anti-fouling performance and the underlying mechanism of this electroactive PES membrane, three types of model foulants were selected rationally (e.g., bovine serum albumin (BSA) and sodium alginate (SA) as non-migratory foulants, yeast as a proliferative foulant and emulsified oil as a spreadable foulant). Water flux and total organic carbon (TOC) removal efficiency in the filtering process of various foulants were tested under an electric field. Results suggest that under electrochemical assistance, the electroactive PES membrane has an enhanced anti-fouling efficacy. Furthermore, a low electrical field was also effective in mitigating the membrane fouling caused by a mixture of various foulants (containing BSA, SA, yeast and emulsified oil). This result can be attributed to the presence of electrostatic repulsion, which keeps foulants away from the membrane surface. Thereby it hinders the formation of a cake layer and mitigates membrane pore blocking. This work implies that an electrochemical control might provide a promising way to mitigate membrane fouling.

Rapid and selective electrochemical transformation of ammonia to N2 by substoichiometric TiO2-based electrochemical system

In this study, we have developed a continuous-flow electrochemical system towards the rapid and selective conversion of ammonia to N₂, based on a tubular substoichiometric titanium dioxide (Ti₄O₇) anode and a Pd–Cu co-modified Ni foam (Pd–Cu/NF) cathode, both of which are indispensable. Under the action of a suitable anode potential, the Ti₄O₇ anode enables the conversion of Cl⁻ to chloride radicals (Cl˙), which could selectively react with ammonia to produce N₂. The anodic byproducts, e.g. NO₃⁻, were further reduced to N₂ at the Pd–Cu/NF cathode. EPR and scavenger experiments confirmed the dominant role of Cl˙ in ammonia conversion. Complete transformation of 30 mg L⁻¹ ammonia could be obtained over 40 min of continuous operation under optimal conditions. The proposed electrochemical system also exhibits enhanced oxidation kinetics compared to conventional batch systems. This study provides new insights into the rational design of a high-performance electrochemical system to address the challenging issue of ammonia pollution.

Efficient removal of arsenic from groundwater using iron oxide nanoneedle array-decorated biochar fibers with high Fe utilization and fast adsorption kinetics

Although Fe-based biochar adsorbents are attractive for removing arsenic from water due to their advantages of costing little and being producible at a large scale, the practical applications of these granular adsorbents are mainly limited by low Fe utilization and slow adsorption kinetics. In this study, iron oxide nanoneedle array-decorated biochar fibers (Fe-NN/BFs) adsorbents have been prepared through a simple hydrothermal reaction. The vertical growth of iron oxide nanoneedle arrays on the surface of biochar fibers maximizes Fe utilization and shortens As diffusion distance, thereby increasing As removal kinetics and capacity. Batch experiments show that the adsorption capacities of Fe-NN/BFs for As(V) and As(III) reach to 93.94 and 70.22 mg/g-Fe at pH 7.0, respectively. As(V) levels (275 μg/L) in groundwater are rapidly reduced (less than 5 min) to below 10 μg/L using Fe-NN/BFs (1 g/L) at pH 6.7. Similar As(III) levels can be reduced to below 10 μg/L within 30 min by Fe-NN/BFs (1.5 g/L). In fixed-bed experiments, the treatment volumes of As(V) and As(III) spiked groundwater reach to 2900 BV (26.2 L) and 2500 BV (22.6 L), respectively, using two columns packed with Fe-NN/BFs in tandem (C₀ = 275 μg/L, 2 g of adsorbents in each column). When the As concentration in the influent is reduced to 50 μg/L (As(V): 25 μg/L + As(III): 25 μg/L), the treatment volume using one column reaches up to 11000 BV. The Fe-NN/BFs packed column can be easily regenerated and reused many times. After four regenerations, the treatment volume of As(V) and As(III) were reduced by 10.4% and 22.8%, respectively.

Boosting Cr(VI) detoxification and sequestration efficiency with carbon nanotube electrochemical filter functionalized with nanoscale polyaniline: Performance and mechanism

Being able to simultaneously reduce and adsorb highly toxic Cr(VI) from bodies of water would provide a significant advance in the treatment of water pollution. Herein, we report on the design of an electroactive filter consisting of nanoscale polyaniline modified carbon nanotubes (PANI-CNT). In an electric field, both Cr(VI) reduction kinetics and Cr(III) sorption capacity were enhanced as the flow rate and voltage increased. At pH 7, Cr(VI) removal efficiency increased from 29.3% at 0 V to 70.2% at 2.5 V. This can be ascribed to superior electrical conductivity, more available active sites and limited pore size of the PANI-CNT filter, further boosted by the flow-through operation. Due to convection-enhanced mass transport, the proposed continuous-flow PANI-CNT filter demonstrated an evidently enhanced kinetic process when compared to conventional batch system. Various advanced assessments and density functional theory calculations verified the essential role of the electric field during Cr(VI) removal. Scanning transmission electron microscopy (STEM) examinations showed that the Cr was mainly sequestered by the PANI. It was also confirmed that an exhausted PANI-CNT filter can be regenerated by chemical washing with an HCl solution. Experiments with actual Cr(VI)-contaminated electroplating wastewater further verified the effectiveness of the system, with complete Cr(VI) transformation and a 50% Cr_total removal efficiency at 2.5 V with a flow rate of 3 mL/min. This study provides new insights into practical continuous-flow solutions to the effective removal of highly toxic Cr(VI).

Coagulation removal of Sb(V) from textile wastewater matrix with enhanced strategy: Comparison study and mechanism analysis

The wide use of antimony in textile industry has posed threat to ecological health and attracted increased attention. The objective of this work was to develop enhanced coagulation strategies including PFS/FeSO₄ and aerated PFS/FeSO₄ for efficient antimony elimination from textile wastewater matrix. With a dosage of 0.75 mM Fe, aerated PFS/FeSO₄ coagulation could achieve 82.6% removal of 500 μg L^-1 Sb(V) from simulated textile wastewater, which was better than PFS (77.6%) and PFS/FeSO₄ coagulation (79.9%). Compared with PFS and PFS/FeSO₄ coagulation, aerated PFS/FeSO₄ strategy could meet the indirect discharge standard (<100 μg L^-1), without any other additional treatment. pH ranged from 5 to 6 could reach 93.8% Sb(V) removal, by affecting coagulant hydrolysis and charges on flocs. Phosphate ion with a level more than 0.03 mM could compete with Sb(V) species and thus reduced its removal. Temperature of 35 °C could lead to enhanced Sb(V) removal by accelerating coagulant hydrolysis. Flocs of aerated PFS/FeSO₄ had smaller average size than that of PFS and PFS/FeSO₄ coagulation. FeOOH was the hydrolysis product of aerated PFS/FeSO₄ strategy. Adsorption, rather than direct and co-precipitation was predominant in the coagulation mechanism. From the phosphate extraction test, 64% of the Sb could form inner-sphere surface complex during aerated PFS/FeSO₄ coagulation removal.
