Abstract
Isoproturon (IPU), a widely utilized phenylurea herbicide, is recognized as an emerging contaminant. Previous studies have predominantly attributed the degradation of IPU in natural waters to indirect photolysis by natural organic matter (NOM). Here, we demonstrate that nitrite (NO2-) also serves as an important photosensitizer that induces the photo-degradation of IPU. Through radical quenching tests, we identify hydroxyl radicals (•OH) and nitrogen dioxide radicals (NO2•) originating from NO2- photolysis as key players in IPU degradation, resulting in the generation of a series of hydroxylated and nitrated byproducts. Moreover, we demonstrate a synergistic effect on the photo-transformation of IPU when both NOM and NO2- are present in the reaction mixture. The observed rate constant (kobs) for IPU removal increases to 0.0179 ± 0.0002 min-1 in the co-presence of NO2- (50 μM) and NOM (2.5 mgC/L), surpassing the sum of those in the presence of each alone (0.0135 ± 0.0004 min-1). NOM exhibits multifaceted roles in the indirect photolysis of IPU. It can be excited by UV and transformed to excited triplet states (3NOM*) which oxidize IPU to IPU•+ that undergoes further degradation. Simultaneously, NOM can mitigate the reaction by reducing the IPU•+ intermediate back to the parent IPU. However, the presence of NO2- alters this dynamic, as IPU•+ rapidly couples with NO2•, accelerating IPU degradation and augmenting the formation of mono-nitrated IPU. These findings provide in-depth understandings on the photochemical transformation of environmental contaminants, especially phenylurea herbicides, in natural waters where NOM and NO2- coexist.

Abstract
Naturally strong ultraviolet irradiation at high altitudes causes photobleaching of plateau lake DOM (P-DOM) and affects its photochemical activity. However, the photoreactivity of P-DOM has remained unclear under natural photobleaching condition. Here, six P-DOM samples isolated from plateau lakes in Yunnan Province, China as well as two reference DOM as comparisons were used to explore the photogeneration of reactive species (RS) and their effects on 17β-estradiol photodegradation. Compared with SRHA/SRFA, P-DOM has lower aromaticity, average molecular weight, and electron-donating capacity. The quantum yields of triplet state P-DOM (3P-DOM*), 1O2, and ∙OH produced in P-DOM solutions were greatly higher than those of reference DOM. The RS quantum yields had positive linear correlations with E2/E3 and SR, whereas were negatively linear correlated with SUVA25. Radical quenching experiments showed that 3P-DOM* was the prominent RS for 17β-estradiol photodegradation, and its contribution exceeded 70% for each of P-DOM. 3P-DOM*-mediated photodegradation was mainly attributed to the electron-transfer reactions with an average second-order rate constant of 4.62 × 109 M-1s-1, indicating the strong photoreactivity towards 17β-estradiol. These findings demonstrate that P-DOM is an efficient photosensitizer for RS production, among which 3P-DOM* may play an important role in enhanced photodegradation for organic micropollutants in plateau lake enriched with DOM.

Abstract
Numerous application of pyrethroid insecticides has led to their accumulation in the environment, threatening ecological environment and human health. Its fate in the presence of iron-bearing minerals and natural organic matter under light irradiation is still unknown. We found that goethite (Gt) and humic acid (HA) could improve the photodegradation of bifenthrin (BF) in proper concentration under light irradiation. The interaction between Gt and HA may further enhance BF degradation. On one hand, the adsorption of HA on Gt may decrease the photocatalytic activity of HA through decreasing HA content in solution and sequestering the functional groups related with the production of reactive species. On the other hand, HA could improve the photocatalytic activity of Gt through extending light absorption, lowing of bandgap energy, hindering the recombination of photo-generated charges, and promoting the oxidation and reduction reaction on Gt surface. The increased oxygen vacancies on Gt surface along with the reduction of trivalent iron and the nucleophilic attack of hole to surface hydroxyl group contributed to the increasing photocatalytic activity of Gt. Electron paramagnetic resonance and quenching studies demonstrated that both oxidation species, such as hydroxyl radical (•OH) and singlet oxygen (1O2), and reducing species, such as hydrogen atoms (H•) and superoxide anion radical (O2•-), contributed to BF degradation in UV-Gt-HA system. Mass spectrometry, ion chromatography, and toxicity assessment indicated that less toxic C23H22ClF3O3 (OH-BF), C9H10ClF3O (TFP), C14H14O2 (OH-MBP), C14H12O2 (MBP acid), C14H12O3 (OH-MBP acid), and chloride ions were the main degradation products. The production of OH-BF, MPB, and TFP acid through oxidation and the production of MPB and TFP via reduction were the two primary pathways of BF degradation.

High-Resolution Mass Spectrometry Combined with Reactive Oxygen Species Reveals Differences in Photoreactivity of Dissolved Organic Matter from Microplastic Sources in Aqueous Environments. Abstract
Microplastics (MPs)-derived dissolved organic matter (MPs-DOM) is becoming a non-negligible source of DOM pools in aquatic systems, but there is limited understanding about the photoreactivity of different MPs-DOM. Herein, MPs-DOM from polystyrene (PS), polyethylene terephthalate (PET), poly(butylene adipate-co-terephthalate) (PBAT), PE, and polypropylene (PP), representing aromatic, biodegradable, and aliphatic plastics, were prepared to examine their photoreactivity. Spectral and high-resolution mass spectrometry analyses revealed that PS/PET/PBAT-DOM contained more unsaturated aromatic components, whereas PE/PP-DOM was richer in saturated aliphatic components. Photodegradation experiments observed that unsaturated aromatic molecules were prone to be degraded compared to saturated aliphatic molecules, leading to a higher degradation of PS/PET/PBAT-DOM than PE/PP-DOM. PS/PET/PBAT-DOM was mainly degraded by hydroxyl (•OH) via attacking unsaturated aromatic structures, whereas PE/PP-DOM by singlet oxygen (1O2) through oxidizing aliphatic side chains. The [•OH]ss was 1.21-1.60 × 10-4 M in PS/PET/PBAT-DOM and 0.97-1.14 × 10-4 M in PE/PP-DOM, while the [1O2]ss was 0.90-1.35 × 10-12 and 0.33-0.44 × 10-12 M, respectively. This contributes to the stronger photoreactivity of PS/PET/PBAT-DOM with a higher unsaturated aromatic degree than PE/PP-DOM. The photodegradation of MPs-DOM reflected a decreasing tendency from aromatic-unsaturated molecules to aliphatic-saturated molecules. Special attention should be paid to the photoreactivity and environmental impacts associated with MPs-DOM containing highly unsaturated aromatic compounds.

Abstract
Notable differences in photo-physical and chemical properties were found between bulk water and solid phase extraction (SPE) isolates for dissolved organic matter (DOM). The moieties extracted using modified styrene divinylbenzene cartridges, which predominantly consist of conjugated aromatic molecules like humic acids, contribute mainly to light absorption but exhibit lower quantum yields of fluorescence and photo-produced reactive intermediates (PPRIs). Fourier transform ion cyclotron resonance mass spectrometry (FT-ICR MS) revealed lignin as the moieties displaying most significant variance in abundance. In Van Krevelen-Spearman plot, we observed molecules positively or negatively correlated with DOM's optical and photochemical properties (including SUVA254, steady-state concentrations of ·OH, 1O2 quantum yield, etc.) were confined to specific regions, which can be delineated using a threshold modified aromaticity index (AImod) of 0.3. Based on the relationships between optical properties and PPRI production, it is suggested that the energy gap between ground state and excited singlet state (△ES1→S0), governing the inner conversion rate, serves as a determinant for apparent quantum yield of PPRIs in DOM, with intra-molecular charge transfer (CT) interactions potentially playing a pivotal role. Regarding DOM's photoreactivity with pollutants, this study has revealed, for the first time, that protein/amino sugars/amino acids could act as antioxidant groups in addition to phenols on the photolysis of sulfadiazine. These findings provide valuable insights into DOM photochemistry and are expected to stimulate further research in this area.

Abstract
Manganese(II) (Mn(II)) and bromide (Br-) are common in natural waters. This study investigated the effect of in-situ Mn(II) oxidation and preformed MnOx on the brominated trihalomethane (Br-THM) formation during chlorination of bromide-containing waters. The results showed Br-THM formation could be substantially inhibited by in-situ Mn(II) oxidation, but the addition of preformed MnOx had limited influence on Br-THM formation during chlorination of bromide-containing waters. Analysis of bromine species showed that about 30 % bromine species were incorporated into the MnOx particles and formed MnOx-Br during the in-situ Mn(II) oxidation process. Consequently, the availability of reactive bromine species for the reaction with dissolved organic matter (DOM) reduced, leading to less Br-THM formation. X-ray diffraction (XRD) analysis of in-situ Mn(II) oxidation product indicated the presence of Br- decreased the crystallinity of Mn oxides, verifying the bromine species entered MnOx crystal. However, the adsorptive uptake of bromine species by preformed MnOx was negligible and had no impact on Br-THM formation. Inhibition rate of Mn(II) oxidation on THM formation decreased with increasing specific ultraviolet absorbance (SUVA254) value of filtered water, showing SUVA254 could be a good indicator of DOM competition ability for oxidant with Mn(II). In addition, Excitation/Emission Matrix indicated that Mn(II) could form complexes with humic substances, which might also retard the reaction between humic substances and oxidant to form Br-THMs. This study highlighted the inhibiting effect of in-situ Mn(II) oxidation on Br-THM formation during chlorination of bromide-containing waters.

Photochemical behaviors of sludge extracellular polymeric substances from bio-treated effluents towards antibiotic degradation: Distinguish the main photosensitive active component and its environmental implication. Abstract
Activated sludge extracellular polymeric substances (ASEPSs) comprise most dissolved organic matters (DOMs) in the tail water. However, the understanding of the link between the photolysis of antibiotic and the photo-reactivity/photo-persistence of ASEPS components is limited. This study first investigated the photochemical behaviors of ASEPS's components (humic acids (HA), hydrophobic substances (HOS) and hydrophilic substances (HIS)) separated from municipal sludge's EPS (M-EPS) and nitrification sludge's EPS (N-EPS) in the photolysis of sulfadiazine (SDZ). The results showed that 60% of SDZ was removed by the M-EPS, but the effect in the separated components was weakened, and only 24% - 39% was degraded. However, 58% of SDZ was cleaned by HOS in N-EPS, which was 23% higher than full N-EPS. M-EPS components had lower steady-state concentrations of triplet intermediates (3EPS*), hydroxyl radicals (·OH) and singlet oxygen (1O2) than M-EPS, but N-EPS components had the highest concentrations (5.96 ×10-15, 8.44 ×10-18, 4.56 ×10-13 M, respectively). The changes of CO, C-O and O-CO groups in HA and HOS potentially correspond to reactive specie's generation. These groups change little in HIS, which may make it have radiation resistance. HCO-3 and NO-3 decreased the indirect photolysis of SDZ, and its by-product N-(2-Pyrimidinyl)1,4-benzenediamine presents high environmental risk.

Abstract
The presence of residual antibiotics in the environment is a prominent issue. Photodegradation behavior is an important way of antibiotics reduction, which is closely related to dissolved organic matter (DOM) in water. The review provides an overview of the latest advancements in the field. Classification, characterization of DOM, and the dominant mechanisms for antibiotic photodegradation were discussed. Furthermore, it summarized and compared the effects of DOM on different antibiotics photodegradation. Moreover, the review comprehensively considered the factors influencing the photodegradation of antibiotics in the aquatic environment, including the characteristics of light, temperature, dosage of DOM, concentration of antibiotics, solution pH, and the presence of coexisting ions. Finally, potential directions were proposed for the development of predictive models for the photodegradation of antibiotics. Based on the review of existing literature, this paper also considered several pathways for the future study of antibiotic photodegradation. This study allows for a better understanding of the DOM's environmental role and provides important new insights into the photochemical fate of antibiotics in the aquatic environment.

Abstract
17α-ethinylestradiol (EE2), a synthetic endocrine-disrupting chemical, can degrade in natural waters where humic acids (HA) and dissolved iron (DFe) are present. The iron is mostly bound in Fe(III)-HA complexes, the formation process of Fe(III)-HA complexes and their effect on EE2 degradation were explored in laboratory experiments. The mechanism of ferrihydrite facilitated by HA was explored with results indicating that HA facilitated the dissolution of ferrihydrite and the generation of Fe(III)-HA complexes with the stable chemical bonds such as C-O, CO in neutral, alkaline media with a suitable Fe/C ratio. 1O2, •OH, and 3HA* were all found to be important in the photodegradation of EE2 mediated by Fe(III)-HA complexes. Fe(III)-HA complexes could produce Fe(II) and hydrogen peroxide (H2O2) to create conditions suitable for photo-Fenton reactions at neutral pH. HA helped to maintain higher dissolved iron concentrations and alter the Fe(III)/Fe(II) cycling. The natural EE2 photodegradation pathway elucidated here provides a theoretical foundation for investigating the natural transformation of other trace organic contaminants in aquatic environments.

Illuminated fulvic acid stimulates denitrification and As(III) immobilization in flooded paddy soils via an enhanced biophotoelectrochemical pathway. THE SCIENCE OF THE TOTAL ENVIRONMENT 2024; 912:169670. Abstract
Fulvic acid (FA) is a representative photosensitive dissolved organic matter (DOM) compound that occurs naturally in paddy soils. In this study, the effect of a FA + nitrate treatment (0, 4 and 8 mg/L FA + 20 mmol/L nitrate) on denitrification and As(III) immobilization in flooded paddy soils was assessed under dark and intermittently illuminated conditions (12 h light+12 h dark). The FA input stimulated denitrification in illuminated soils (~100 % of nitrate removal within 6 days) compared to dark conditions (~92 % nitrate removal after 6 days). Meanwhile, As(III) (initial concentration of 0.1 mmol/L) was nearly completely immobilized (~100 %) under illuminated conditions after 4 days for the FA + nitrate treatment compared to 90- 93 % retention in the dark. Denitrification and As immobilization were positively related to the FA dosage in the illuminated assays. The stronger denitrification in illuminated soils was ascribed to denitrifiers harvesting photoelectrons from photosensitive substrates/semiconducting minerals. FA addition also increased the activities of denitrifying enzymes (e.g., NAR, NIR and NOR) and the denitrification electron transport system by nearly 0.6-0.7 and 1.5-1.8 times that of the nitrate-alone treatment under illuminated and dark conditions, thereby fostering stronger denitrification. Upon irradiation, As(III) immobilization was not only stimulated by the interactions with the denitrification pathway whereby As(III) acts as an electron donor for denitrifiers, but was also modulated by Fe(III)/oxidative reactive species-derived photooxidation of As(III). Moreover, the FA + nitrate treatment promoted the enrichment of metal-oxidizing bacteria (e.g., Stenotrophomonas and Acidovorax) that are responsible for nitrate-dependent As(III)/Fe(II) oxidation. The results of this study enhance our understanding of interactions among the biogeochemical cycles of As, Fe, N and C, which are intricately linked by a biophotoelectrochemical pathway in flooded paddy soils.

Abstract
Sunlight may lead to changes in disinfection byproducts (DBPs) formation potentials of source water via transforming dissolved organic matter (DOM); however, the underlying mechanisms behind these changes remain unclear. This work systematically investigated the effect of photochemical transformation of DOM from reservoir water (DOMRe) and micropolluted river water (DOMRi) after 36 h of simulated sunlight irradiation (equivalent to one month under natural sunlight) on DBPs formation. Upon irradiation, high molecular weight (MW) and aromatic molecules tended to be mineralized or converted into low-MW and highly oxidized (O/C > 0.5) ones which might react with chlorine to generate high levels of DBPs, resulting in an elevation in the yields (μg DBP/mg C) of almost all the measured DBPs and the quantities of unknown DBPs in both DOM samples after chlorination. Additionally, DOMRi contained more aromatic molecules susceptible to photooxidation than DOMRe. Consequently, irradiated DOMRi exhibited a greater increase in the formation potentials of haloacetonitriles, halonitromethanes, and specific regulated DBPs, with nitrogenous DBPs being responsible for the overall rise in the calculated cytotoxicity following chlorination. This work emphasized the importance of a comprehensive removal of phototransformation products that may serve as DBPs precursors from source waters, especially from micropolluted source waters.

Abstract
Free available chlorine has been and is being applied in global water treatment and readily reacts with dissolved organic matter (DOM) in aquatic environments, leading to the formation of chlorinated products. Chlorination enhances the photoreactivity of DOM, but the influence of chlorinated compounds on the photogeneration of hydroxyl radicals (•OH) has remained unexplored. In this study, a range of chlorinated carboxylate-substituted phenolic model compounds were employed to assess their •OH photogeneration capabilities. These compounds demonstrated a substantial capacity for •OH production, exhibiting quantum yields of 0.1-5.9 × 10-3 through direct photolysis under 305 nm and 0.2-9.5 × 10-3 through a triplet sensitizer (4-benzoylbenzoic acid)-inducing reaction under 365 nm LED irradiation. Moreover, the chlorinated compounds exhibited higher light absorption and •OH quantum yields compared to those of their unchlorinated counterparts. The •OH photogeneration capacity of these compounds exhibited a positive correlation with their triplet state one-electron oxidation potentials. Molecular-level compositional analysis revealed that aromatic structures rich in hydroxyl and carboxyl groups (e.g., O/C > 0.5 with H/C < 1.5) within DOM serve as crucial sources of •OH, and chlorination of these compounds significantly enhances their capacity to generate •OH upon irradiation. This study provides novel insights into the enhanced photogeneration of •OH from chlorinated DOM, which is helpful for understanding the fate of trace pollutants in chlorinated waters.

Abstract
Reactive oxygen species (ROS) play a crucial role in the biogeochemistry of aquatic environments, yet their occurrence and accumulation in the biofilm of submerged macrophytes have been poorly documented. Herein, we first investigated the light-dark cycling fluctuations of biofilm microenvironment and the temporal variations of a representative ROS (O2•-) during biofilm succession on the macrophyte leaves and subsequently quantified the photochemical processes in biofilms. The sustained production of O2•- exhibited a distinct rhythmic fluctuation from 32.49 ± 0.56 μmol/kg to 72.56 ± 0.92 μmol/kg FW, which simultaneously fluctuated with the dissolved oxygen, redox potential, and pH, all driven by the alternating oxic-anoxic conditions of biofilms. The intensities of O2•- and ROS firstly increased and then decreased throughout biofilm succession. The O2•- concentrations in biofilms from different waters followed the order of rural river water > landscape lake water > aquaculture pond water, and the leaf photosynthesis and microbial community played a key role. ROS production was significantly associated with Actinobacteria, Proteobacteria and Bacteroidetes, with contributions of 44.6%, 32.8%, and 15.2%, respectively. Partial least squares path modeling structural equation analysis showed that ROS production in leaf biofilms was mainly related to the microenvironment and microbial metabolism. These findings will facilitate the development of ecological restoration strategies in aquatic environments.

Abstract
Hydrothermal treatment (HT) is promising to remove antimicrobials from sewage sludge (SS); however, the mechanism of antimicrobial degradation during the HT of SS is not fully understood. In this study, the roles of extracellular polymeric substances (EPS) in the removal and transformation of norfloxacin (NOR) during the HT of SS at temperatures of 100 and 160 °C were investigated. The results indicated that the degradation of NOR increased with increasing HT temperature, with maximum NOR removal (52%) achieved at 160 °C. Furthermore, the NOR in sludge showed higher degradation efficiencies than the control as HT temperature was higher than 120 °C. Evident promotion effects of bound-EPS (B-EPS) in sludge were observed on the NOR degradation as HT temperature was higher than 120 °C, leading to the mineralization and deamination of protein-like components in EPS during HT. Beside, the adsorption capacity of NOR during the HT of SS decreased at temperatures higher than 120 °C. The evolution of the spatial structure of B-EPS was predominantly responsible for the adsorption of antimicrobials, a spontaneous process driven mainly by hydrophilic interactions. With the hydrothermal conversion of B-EPS, the electron transfer, and reactive species (3EPS* and ·OH) derived from B-EPS could facilitate the degradation of NOR. In particular, hydrogen bonds between B-EPS and NOR increased the apparent yield of ·OH and accelerated the decarboxylation of NOR during HT at temperatures higher than 120 °C. A toxicity evaluation suggested that HT for NOR degradation could attenuate toxicity, whereas deep oxidation or mineralization would be needed to promote ecosystem safety. These findings provide new insights into the hydrothermal activation of EPS and the interrelated hydrothermal fate of antimicrobials and other toxic pollutants in sludge.

Abstract
Sunlight plays a crucial role in the transformation of dissolved organic matter (DOM) and the associated carbon cycle in aquatic environments. This study demonstrates that the presence of nanomolar concentrations of copper (Cu) significantly decreases the rate of photobleaching and the rate of loss of electron-donating moieties of three selected types of DOM (including both terrestrial and microbially derived DOM) under simulated sunlight irradiation. Employing Fourier transform ion cyclotron resonance mass spectrometry, we further confirm that Cu selectively inhibits the photooxidation of lignin- and tannin-like phenolic moieties present within the DOM, in agreement with the reported inhibitory impact of Cu on the photooxidation of phenolic compounds. On the basis of the inhibitory impact of Cu on the DOM photobleaching rate, we calculate the contribution of phenolic moieties to DOM photobleaching to be at least 29-55% in the wavelength range of 220-460 nm. The inhibition of loss of electrons from DOM during irradiation in the presence of Cu is also explained quantitatively by developing a mathematical model describing hydrogen peroxide (a proxy measure of loss of electrons from DOM) formation on DOM irradiation in the absence and presence of Cu. Overall, this study advances our understanding of DOM transformation in natural sunlit waters.

Abstract
Settleable atmospheric particulate matter (SeAPM) containing a mixture of metals, including metallic nanoparticles, has increased throughout the world, and caused environmental and biota contamination. The metal bioconcentration pattern in Nile tilapia (Oreochromis niloticus) was evaluated during a 30-day exposure to 1 g L-1 SeAPM and assessed the human health risk from consuming fish fillets (muscle) based on the estimated daily intake (EDI). SeAPM was collected surrounding an iron ore processing and steel industrial complex in Vitória city (Espírito Santo, Brazil) area. Water samples were collected daily for physicochemical analyses, and every 3 days for multi-elemental analyses. Metal bioconcentrations were determined in the viscera and fillet of fish every 3 days. The elements B, Al, V, Cr, Mn, Fe, Ni, Cu, Zn, As, Se, Rb, Sr, Ag, Cd, Pb, Hg, Ba, Bi, W, Ti, Zr, Y, La, Nb, and Ce were analyzed in SeAPM, water, and fish using inductively coupled plasma mass spectrometry. The metal concentration in SeAPM-contaminated water was higher than in control water. Most metals bioconcentrated preferentially in the fish viscera, except for the Hg and Rb, which bioconcentrated mostly in the fillet. The bioconcentration pattern was Fe > Al > Mn > Pb > V > La > Ce > Y > Ni > Se > As > W > Bi in the viscera; it was higher than the controls throughout the 30-day exposure. Ti, Zr, Nb, Rb, Cd, Hg, B, and Cr showed different bioconcentration patterns. The Zn, Cu, Sr, Sn, Ag, and Ta did not differ from controls. The differences in metal bioconcentration were attributed to diverse metal bioavailability in water and the dissimilar ways fish can cope with each metal, including inefficient excretion mechanisms. The EDI calculation indicated that the consumption of the studied fish is not safe for children, because the concentrations of As, La, Zr, and Hg exceed the World Health Organization's acceptable daily intake for these elements.

Abstract
Apparent quantum yields (Φ) of photochemically produced reactive intermediates (PPRIs) formed by dissolved organic matter (DOM) are vital to element cycles and contaminant fates in surface water. Simultaneous determination of ΦPPRI values from numerous water samples through existing experimental methods is time consuming and ineffective. Herein, machine learning models were developed with a systematic data set including 1329 data points to predict the values of three ΦPPRIs (Φ3DOM*, Φ1O2, and Φ·OH) based on DOM spectral parameters, experimental conditions, and calculation parameters. The best predictive performances for Φ3DOM*, Φ1O2, and Φ·OH were achieved using the CatBoost model, which outperformed the traditional linear regression models. The significances of the wavelength range and spectral parameters on the three ΦPPRI predictions were revealed, suggesting that DOM with lower molecular weight, lower aromatic content, and a more autochthonous portion possessed higher ΦPPRIs. Chain models were constructed by adding the predicted Φ3DOM* as a new feature into the Φ1O2 and Φ·OH models, which consequently improved the predictive performance of Φ1O2 but worsened the Φ·OH prediction likely due to the complex formation pathways of ·OH. Overall, this study offered robust ΦPPRI prediction across interlaboratory differences and provided new insights into the relationship between PPRIs formation and DOM properties.

THE SCIENCE OF THE TOTAL ENVIRONMENT 2023; 899:165702. Abstract
Determining conditional stability constant (Kcond) is paramount in assessing complex stability, particularly in Fe(III) complexes that are prevalent in actual surface water and wastewater matrices. In this study, existing methods of Kcond determination were evaluated and a novel UV-Vis spectroscopy method was proposed based on the evaluation of these approaches. Model ligands (ethylenediaminetetraacetic acid (EDTA), nitrilotriacetic acid (NTA), and oxalic acid (OA)), as well as common antibiotics (kanamycin (Kana) and tetracycline (TTC)), were employed to determine the Kcond of the Fe(III)-ligand complexes under neutral conditions (pH 6.5). The obtained fitting results revealed that the logKcond were in the order of Fe(III)-EDTA (7.08) > Fe(III)-NTA (4.67) > Fe(III)-OA (4.32) > Fe(III)-TTC (4.28) > Fe(III)-Kana (3.07). In addition to these single ligands, the methodology was extended to the Fe(III) complexation with humic acid (HA), a complex mixture of organic components, where the fitting result indicated a logKcond of 5.02 M-1. The method's application domain was analyzed by numerical analysis and combined with experimental results. The findings demonstrate that the proposed methodology possesses satisfactory measurement capability for Kcond ranging from 103 to 107 M-1, suggesting its broad applicability to the majority of complexes. This method can provide valuable insights into the impact of Fe(III) complexes within the water matrix.

Abstract
Dissolved organic matter (DOM) derived from wetland plants played a critical role in CWs pollutant migration. This study investigated the character and release pattern of DOM derived from two wetland plants, Phragmites australis and Cladophora sp., and the interaction between DOM with phenanthrene (PHE), benzo(a)pyrene (Bap), and benzo [k]fluoranthene (BkF) under different physical conditions were also studied using spectroscopic techniques. DOM release was related to plant species and withering stage. Humic acid (HA)-like fractions (C3 and C5) were dominated in P. australis (52%) and completely withered Cladophora sp. groups (55%), while protein-like fractions (C1 and C2) dominated in early withered Cladophora sp. groups (52%). Due to the cell and tissue structure difference among plants and their withering stage, DOM derived from early withered P. australis revealed a two-stage slow-fast phase, while other groups were linearly released (R2 0.87207-0.97091). A strong correlation existed between HA-like fractions and water quality index, reflecting the critical influence of plant decay in CWs operation performance. The analysis with Stern-Volmer equation indicated that plant-based DOM interacted with PAHs to form ground state complexes with possible involvement of π-π interaction, hydrogen bonding and cation bridging effect. Aromatic, molecular weight, and hydrophilicity of both DOM and PAHs affected their binding with the interaction capability in the order of BKF > Bap > PHE and C3 > C5 > C2 > C1 > C4. Besides, alkaline environment and high DO condition was highly unsuitable for the combination. Scientific management and appropriate operating condition were important in optimizing operation performance and controlling pollutant migration in CWs.

Abstract
Composition and source of dissolved organic matter (DOM) in water influence the rate of production of reactive intermediates (RIs), affecting the photodegradation of phenolic contaminants of emerging concern (PhCECs). However, this relationship has not been fully quantified. Here, for the first time, we propose a mechanism for photodegradation of a surrogate of PhCECs, p-cresol, in different DOM standard solutions under simulated sunlight irradiation. More importantly, the correlation of DOM optical parameters and p-cresol photodegradation kinetic parameters was determined by Pearson correlation. Results showed that indirect photodegradation was the only degradation pathway for p-cresol, mainly through reaction with excited triplet state of dissolved organic matter (3DOM*). Singlet oxygen (1O2) and hydroxyl radical (•OH) hindered degradation of p-cresol by decreasing the steady state concentration of 3DOM*. Moreover, less aromatic and smaller molecular size DOM showed higher steady-state concentration and quantum yield of 1O2, and 3DOM*, resulting in faster p-cresol photodegradation. Finally, 7 out of 8 optical parameters showed strong correlation with the p-cresol photodegradation rate constant. The mechanism and correlations found are a potential tool to predict PhCECs photodegradation in water using DOM optical parameters.

Abstract
Colloid-facilitated contaminant transport in porous media has been widely observed in laboratory and field studies. In this study, the influence of two dissolved organic matters (DOMs), humic acid (HA) and bovine serum albumin (BSA), on the colloid-associated heavy metal transport, was investigated. Soil colloids with particle sizes <2 μm were prepared from bentonite. Glass bead was used as porous media for the column tests. The influence of DOM on the adsorption of Pb2+ and Cu2+ onto colloids was tested. Colloid mobility and colloid-metal co-transport in the presence/absence of DOMs were investigated by breakthrough tests. The test results showed that DOMs facilitated colloid mobility. The measured ζ-potentials showed that DOMs enhanced the electrostatic repulsion between colloids and glass beads and reduced colloid deposition. These findings were further confirmed by calculating the interaction energy using the DLVO theory. Batch tests showed the strong adsorption of Pb2+ and Cu2+ on the colloid, and the adsorption was enhanced by DOMs. The colloid-metal co-transport tests showed that colloids can significantly facilitate the transport of Pb2+ and Cu2+ and that the facilitation was further enhanced by DOMs. By heavy metals, the colloid mobility was retarded, mainly due to the increased deposition. The transport of Cu2+ facilitated by DOM was more obvious than that of Pb2+. Compared to BSA, the effect of HA on enhancing colloid mobility, increasing colloid adsorption to heavy metals, and hence on the facilitation of colloid-associated heavy metals transport was more prominent.

Abstract
The CuO/reduced graphene oxide foam (CuO/RGF) with excellent recyclability was prepared via hydrothermal method followed by freeze drying treatment for bisphenol A (BPA) removal via activating peroxydisulfate (PDS). SEM, XRD, XPS, FT-IR, BET, and TG techniques were used to investigate the structure and property of CuO/RGF. The effect of degradation conditions (pH, PDS amount, Cl-, HCO3-, HA and FA) on BPA removal by CuO/RGF were investigated. The result presented that CuO nanosheet was inserted into the RGF carrier with three-dimensional structure. The degradation rate constant of BPA over CuO/RGF (0.00917 min-1) was 1.24 and 6.46 times higher than those of BPA over CuO (0.00714 min-1) and RGF (0.00142 min-1). More importantly, the pore structure of RGF can successfully limit the release of Cu (II) compared to pure CuO. According to quenching test as well as electron spin resonance (EPR) spectra, BPA degradation was triggered by 1O2, •OH and SO4•-, which was the combination of nonradical (1O2) and radical activation of PDS (•OH and SO4•-). The possible degradation route of BPA was proposed based on intermediates obtained by combining solid phase extraction pretreatment technique with high performance liquid-mass spectrometry. After assessing the viability of MCF-7 cells, we can see that the estrogenic activities of treated solution reduced without producing stronger endocrine disruptors.

Abstract
Phosphite, an essential component in the biogeochemical phosphorus cycle, may make significant contributions to the bioavailable phosphorus pool as well as water eutrophication. However, to date, the potential impacts of coexisting photochemically active substances on the environmental fate and transformation of phosphite in aquatic environments have been sparsely elucidated. In the present study, the effect of zinc oxide nanoparticles (ZnO NPs), a widely distributed photocatalyst in aquatic environments, on phosphite phototransformation under simulated solar irradiation was systematically investigated. The physicochemical characteristics of the pristine and reacted ZnO NPs were thoroughly characterized. The results showed that the presence of ZnO NPs induced the indirect phototransformation of phosphite to phosphate, and the reaction rate increased with increasing ZnO NPs concentration. Through experiments with quenching and trapping free radicals, it was proved that photogenerated reactive oxygen species (ROS), such as hydroxyl radical (•OH), superoxide anion (O2•-), and singlet oxygen (1O2), made substantial contributions to phosphite phototransformation. In addition, the influencing factors such as initial phosphite concentration, pH, water matrixes (Cl-, F-, Br-, SO42-, NO3-, NO2-, HCO3-, humic acid (HA) and citric acid (CA)) were investigated. The component of generated precipitates after the phosphite phototransformation induced by ZnO NPs was still dominated by ZnO NPs, while the presence of amorphous Zn3(PO4)2 was identified. This work explored ZnO NPs-mediated phosphite phototransformation processes, indicating that nanophotocatalysts released into aquatic environments such as ZnO NPs may function as photosensitizers to play a beneficial role in the transformation of phosphite to phosphate, thereby potentially mitigating the toxicity of phosphite to aquatic organisms while exacerbating eutrophication. The findings of this study provide a novel insight into the comprehensive assessment of the environmental fate, potential ecological risk, and biogeochemical behaviors of phosphite in natural aquatic environments under the condition of combined pollution.

Abstract
Dissolved black carbon (DBC), an important photosensitizer in surface waters, can influence the photodegradation of various organic micropollutants. In natural water systems, DBC often co-occurs with metal ions as DBC-metal ion complexes; however, the influence of metal ion complexation on the photochemical activity of DBC is still unclear. Herein, the effects of metal ion complexation were investigated using common metal ions (Mn2+, Cr3+, Cu2+, Fe3+, Zn2+, Al3+, Ca2+, and Mg2+). Complexation constants (logKM) derived from three-dimensional fluorescence spectra revealed that Mn2+, Cr3+, Cu2+, Fe3+, Zn2+, and Al3+ quenched the fluorescence components of DBC via static quenching. The steady-state radical experiment suggested that in the complex systems of DBC with various metal ions, Mn2+, Cr3+, Cu2+, Fe3+, Zn2+ and Al3+ inhibited the photogeneration of 3DBC* via dynamic quenching, which reduced the yields of 3DBC*-derived 1O2 and O2·-. Moreover, 3DBC* quenching by metal ions was associated with the complexation constant. A strong positive linear relationship existed between logKM and the dynamic quenching rate constant of metal ions. These results indicate that the strong complexation ability of metal ions enabled 3DBC quenching, which highlights the photochemical activity of DBC in natural aquatic environments enriched with metal ions.

Abstract
Dissolved organic matter (DOM) driven-photochemical processes play an important role in the redox cycling of trace metals and attenuation of organic contaminants in estuarine and coastal ecosystems. In this study, we evaluate the effect of Cu on 4-carboxybenzophenone (CBBP) and Suwannee River natural organic matter (SRNOM)-photosensitized degradation of seven target contaminants (TCs) including phenols and amines under pH conditions and salt concentrations typical of those encountered in estuarine and coastal waters. Our results show that trace amounts of Cu(II) (25 -500 nM) induce strong inhibition of the photosensitized degradation of all TCs in solutions containing CBBP. The influence of TCs on the photo-formation of Cu(I) and the decrease in the lifetime of transformation intermediates of contaminants (TC•+/ TC•(-H)) in the presence of Cu(I) indicated that the inhibition effect of Cu was mainly due to the reduction of TC•+/ TC•(-H) by the photo-produced Cu(I). The inhibitory effect of Cu on the photodegradation of TCs decreased with the increase in Cl- concentration since less reactive Cu(I)-Cl complexes dominate at high Cl- concentrations. The impact of Cu on the SRNOM-sensitized degradation of TCs is less pronounced compared to that observed in CBBP solution since the redox active moieties present in SRNOM competes with Cu(I) to reduce TC•+/ TC•(-H). A detailed mathematical model is developed to describe the photodegradation of contaminants and Cu redox transformations in irradiated SRNOM and CBBP solutions.

Abstract
The photoactivity of dissolved organic matter (DOM) has a great impact on the photodegradation of organic pollutants in natural waters. In this study, the photodegradation of TBBPA was investigated under simulated sunlight irradiation in the presence of copper ion (Cu2+), dissolved organic matter (DOM) and Cu-DOM complexation (Cu-DOM) to illustrate the effect of Cu2+ on photoactivity of DOM. The rate of photodegradation of TBBPA in the presence of Cu-DOM complex was 3.2 times higher than that in pure water. The effects of Cu2+, DOM and Cu-DOM on the photodegradation of TBBPA were highly pH dependent and hydroxyl radical(·OH) responded for the acceleration effect. Spectral and radical experiments indicated that Cu2+ had high affinity to fluorescence components of DOM, and acted as both the cation bridge and electron shuttle, resulting the aggregation of DOM and increasing of steady-state concentration of ·OH (·OHss). Simultaneously, Cu2+ also inhibited intramolecular energy transfer leading to the decrease of steady-state concentration singlet oxygen (1O2ss) and triplet of DOM (3DOM⁎ss). The interaction between Cu2+ and DOM followed the order of conjugated carbonyl CO, COO- or CO stretching in phenolic groups and carbohydrate or alcoholic CO groups. With these results, a comprehensive investigation on the photodegradation of TBBPA in the presence of Cu-DOM was conducted, and the effect of Cu2+ on the photoactivity of DOM was illustrated. These findings helped to understanding the potential mechanism of interaction among metal cation, DOM and organic pollutants in sunlit surface water, especially for the DOM-induced photodegradation of organic pollutants.

Abstract
Colloids are wide-spread in natural waters and colloid-facilitated transport via adsorption was established as the most important mechanism for the mobilization of aqueous contaminants. This study reports another possible, but reasonable, role of colloids for the contaminants driven by redox reactions. Under the same conditions (pH 6.0, 0.3 ml 30% H2O2, and 25 °C), the degradation efficiencies of methylene blue (MB) at 240 min over Fe colloid, Fe ion, Fe oxide and Fe(OH)3 were 95.38%, 42.66%, 4.42% and 9.40%. We suggested that, Fe colloid can promote the H2O2 based in-situ chemical oxidation process (ISCO) compared with other iron species such as Fe(Ⅲ) ion, Fe oxide and Fe(OH)3 in natural water. Furthermore, the MB removal via adsorption by Fe colloid was only 1.74% at 240 min. Hence, the occurrence, behavior and fate of MB in Fe colloid containing natural water system mainly depends on the reduction-oxidation rather than adsorption-desorption process. Based on the mass balance of colloidal iron species and characterization of iron configurations distribution, Fe oligomers were the active and dominant components for Fe colloid-driven enhanced H2O2 activation among three types of Fe species. The quick and steady conversion of Fe(III) to Fe(II) was proven to be reason why Fe colloid can efficiently react with H2O2 to produce hydroxyl radicals.

Abstract
Anionic, acidic, and metal ions are common contaminants in water and cause serious concerns for human and aquatic life. With the goal of rapid detection of analytes, we herein design a new array of ligand 5-(4H-1,2,4-triazol-4-yl)pyridin-3-ol-linked silver coordinated metal-organic frameworks Ag-MOFs as a promising sensor for Cr2O72-, MnO4-, humic acid (HA), and Fe3+ ions down to the micro level. Furthermore, as evidenced by luminescence, excitation-emission matrix (EEM) spectroscopic, and PXRD measurements, designed metal-organic frameworks (MOFs) can be fast, stable, and reusable for analyte detection in water.

Abstract
As emerging pollutants, microplastics (MPs) have aroused worldwide concern due to their ubiquitous distribution, environmental persistence, and potential ecological risks. However, the ageing mechanisms, environmental behaviours and risks of photoaged MPs mediated by environmental factors remain obscure. Herein, systems containing a light source, humic acid (HA) and Fe were established to investigate the natural photoaging process of MPs including polyvinyl chloride (PVC) and polyethylene terephthalate (PET). The dehydrochlorination reaction of PVC-MP was inhibited by HA and Fe, which resulted from the coeffect of photon competition, excited state quenching, radical deactivation or transformation, and defect structure destruction. In contrast, the enhanced fluorescence effect suggested that the photooxidation reactions of PET-MP were promoted by HA and Fe. Therefore, the presence of HA and Fe in the environment inhibited the photoreduction of MPs while favoring the photooxidative process. Additionally, the adsorption capacity for 17α-ethinylestradiol and the cytotoxicity of MPs were increased after ageing in the hv + HA and hv + HA + Fe systems, which was attributed to the changes in morphology, elements and functional groups. This study provided new insight into the ageing behaviours of MPs in the natural environment with widespread dissolved organic matter and Fe.

Abstract
Black carbon (BC) is ubiquitous in sunlit waters and atomosphere. Recent studies revealed that under sunlight irradiation BC is photoactive on producing photochemically produced reactive intermediates (PPRIs), a group of key species in accelerating earth's surface biogeochemical processes and pollutant dynamics. Nevertheless, reported PPRIs productions from BC exhibit large inconsistency and the intrinsic capacities of BC in producing PPRIs remain poorly characterized. This work provided a wavelength-dependent quantum yields (QYs) assessment of four environmentally-relevant PPRIs (excited triplet state BC (3BC*), singlet oxygen (1O2), hydrogen peroxide (H2O2), and hydroxyl radical (·OH)) from various BC. The QYs of all investigated PPRIs exhibit high dependence on incident light wavelength. For instance, the QYs of 1O2 dramatically decreased from 4.4% to 0.4% with light wavelength increasing from 375 to 490 nm and decreased to 0 above 490 nm. Suprisingly, PPRIs QYs only varied by 2.0-2.5-fold among BC prepared from different biomasses (i.e., pine needle, shell, straw, and wood), while the pyrolysis temperature and size of BC demonstrate higher impacts on the PPRIs QYs by up to 30.3- and 7.1-fold variations, respectively. Analyses on the physicochemical properties of BC demonstrate that QYs of 3BC* and 1O2 were linked to the optical properties of BC, while the QYs of H2O2 and ·OH were determined by multiple factors including the surface redox characteristics. Further, PPRIs productions from BC follow similar paths and efficiencies compared to those from natural organic matter. The revealed QYs of BC-derived PPRIs establish a key basis for evaluating PPRIs-mediated element cycles and pollutant transformation in natural waters, which are becoming increasingly important in the context of higher BC input from more frequent wildfires and artificial sources.

Abstract
Dissolved organic matter (DOM) plays a significant role in the photochemical behavior of nano- and micro-plastic particles (NPs/MPs). We investigated the influence of DOM on the mechanism on the photoaging of NPs/MPs with different molecular structures under UV365 irradiation in water. DOM components used in this study are mainly humic acid and fulvic acid. The results showed that DOM promoted the weathering of aliphatic NPs/MPs (polypropylene (PP)), but inhibited or had only a minor effect on the photoaging of aromatic NPs/MPs (polystyrene (PS) NPs/MPs, carboxyl-modified PS NPs, amino-modified PS NPs, and polycarbonate MPs). NPs with a large surface area may adsorb sufficient DOM on the particle surfaces through π-π interactions, which competes with NPs for photon absorption sites, thus, can delay the photoaging of PS NPs. Aromatic MPs may release phenolic compounds that quench •OH, thereby weakening the photoaging process. For aliphatic MPs, the detection of peracid, aldehyde, and ketone groups on the polymer surface indicated that DOM promoted weathering of PP MPs, which was primarily because the generation of •OH due to DOM photolysis may attack the polymer by C-C bond cleavage and hydrogen extraction reactions. This study provides insight into the UV irradiation weathering process of NPs/MPs of various compositions and structures, which are globally distributed in water.

Abstract
Metal ions are key components in atmosphere that potentially affect the optical properties and photochemical reactivity of atmospheric humic-like substances (HULIS), while this mechanism is still unclear. In this study, we demonstrated that atmospheric HULIS coupled with Fe3+, Cu2+, Zn2+, and Al3+ exhibited distinct optical properties and reactive intermediates from that of HULIS utilizing three-dimensional fluorescence spectroscopy and electron paramagnetic resonance spectroscopy. The HULIS components showed light absorption that increased by 56% for the HULIS-Fe3+ system, fluorescence blue shift, and fluorescence quenching, showing a certain dose-effect relationship. These are mainly attributed to the fact that the highly oxidative HULIS chromophores have a stronger complexing ability with Fe3+ ions than the other metal ions. In addition, triplet organics (promoting ratio: 53%) and reactive oxygen species (promoting ratio: 82.6%) in the HULIS-Fe3+ system showed obvious generation promotion. Therefore, the main assumption of the photochemical mechanisms of atmospheric HULIS in the HULIS-Fe3+ system is that Fe3+ ions can form 3HULIS*-Fe3+ complexation with photoexcited 3HULIS* and then transition to the ground state through energy transfer, electron transfer, or nonradiative transition, accompanied by the formation of singlet oxygen and hydroxyl radicals. Our results provide references for evaluating the radiative forcing and aging effect of metal ions on atmospheric aerosols.

Abstract
Excited-triplet dissolved black carbon (DBC) was deemed as a significant reactive intermediate in the phototransformation of environmental micropollutants, but the impacts of concomitant metal ions on photochemical behavior of excited-triplet DBC (3DBC*) are poorly understood. Here, the photolytic kinetics of sulfadiazine and carbamazepine induced by 3DBC* involving Cu2+ was explored. The presence of Cu2+ reduced the 3DBC*-induced photodegradation rate of sulfadiazine; whereas for carbamazepine, Cu2+ enhanced 3DBC*-induced photodegradation. Cu(II)-DBC complex was formed due to the decreasing fluorescence intensities of DBC in the presence of Cu2+. Cu2+ complexation caused the decrease of 3DBC* steady-state concentrations, which markedly reduced 3DBC*-induced photodegradation rate of sulfadiazine due to its high triplet reactivity. Kinetic model showed that 3DBC* quenching rate by Cu2+ was 7.98 × 109 M-1 s-1. Cu2+ complexation can also enhance the electron transfer ability, thereby producing more ∙OH in Cu(II)-DBC complex, which explains the promoting effect of Cu2+ complexation on carbamazepine photodegradation in view of its low triplet reaction rate. These indicate that 3DBC* reactivity differences of organic micropollutants may explain their photodegradation kinetics differences in DBC system with/without Cu2+, which was supported by the linearized relationship between the photodegradation rate ratios of ten micropollutants with/without Cu2+ and their triplet reaction activity.

Abstract
Surface water contains a large amount of dissolved organic matter (DOM). Interactions between DOM and micropollutants have a significant impact on micropollutant degradation. In this study, algal extracellular polymeric substances (EPS) and natural organic matter (NOM) were selected as two DOM sources and oxytetracycline (OTC) as a representative micropollutant. EPS was mainly composed of tryptophan and protein-like organics, while NOM was mainly composed of fulvic acid-like, humic acid-like, and hydrophobic acid components. In addition, OTC degradation significantly decreased when bound with EPS and the C=O and C-H bonds of CH2 or CH3 groups may be involved in binding EPS and OTC, respectively, while -COOH may be involved in the binding of NOM and OTC. Furthermore, triplet intermediates were found to play a major role in OTC photodegradation in both EPS and NOM, with the contribution calculated as 49.96% and 44.61%, respectively. Steady-state concentrations of 3EPS* in EPS and 3NOM* in NOM were 3.59 × 10-14 mol L-1 and 5.54 × 10-15 mol L-1, respectively. These results provide new insights into the degradation of antibiotic-containing wastewater in the natural environment or engineering applications.

Abstract
Microplastics have been identified as a kind of emerging pollutant with potential ecological risks, and it is an urgent endeavor to find proper technologies for their remediation. Electrochemical advanced oxidation process (EAOP) technology has exhibited robust performance in the removal of various refractory organic pollutants. In this study, we explored a new remediation strategy for polystyrene microplastics (PS MPs), introducing sodium dodecyl sulfate (SDS) to enhance its degradation performance in boron-doped diamond (BDD) anode adopted EAOP. At first, we investigated the degradation behaviors of SDS in the BDD electrolysis. According to the SDS half-life under various current densities, the SDS addition strategy into EAOP is proposed; that is, supplement SDS to 500 mg/L at every half-life during electrolysis except the last cycle. Results indicated that SDS addition greatly enhanced MPs degradation rate in 72 h of EAOP, about 1.35-2.29 times higher than that in BDD electrolysis alone. The SDS assisted EAOP also led to more obvious changes in the particle size, morphology, and functional groups of the MPs. After treatment, a variety of alkyl-cleavage and oxidation products were identified, which attributed to the strong attack of oxidants (i.e., persulfate) on the MPs. The enhanced persulfate generation and oxidants adsorption on MPs can explain the enhancement effect in the EAOP strategy. Cost analysis results showed the surfactant only accounts for < 0.05% of the total operating costs in the SDS assisted EAOP. In general, the current study provided new insight into the effective way to improve the EAOP efficiency of microplastics.

Abstract
Metal cations are present in domestic and industrial wastewater and have adverse effects on human and aqueous life. The present study describes the development of the molecular probe 9-anthracen-9-ylmethylene)hydrazineylidene)methyl)-2,3,6,7-tetrahydro-1H,5H-pyrido[3,2,1-ij]quinolin-8-ol (AMHMPQ) to detect Cr3+, Cu2+, Fe3+, and Gd3+ ions by using UV-visible, fluorescence, colorimetric and excitation-emission matrix (EEM) spectroscopy techniques. The interaction of Cr3+, Cu2+, Fe3+, and Gd3+ can be observed by the absorption maxima shift, turn-off, colour changes, and EEM shifts. In addition, fluorescence limits of detection 17.66 × 10-6 M, 6.44 × 10-9 M, 28.87 × 10-8 M, and 12.49 × 10-6 M in wide linear ranges, low limits of quantifications, high values of Stern-Volmer constant, Job's plot and Benesi-Hildebrand plot justify the 1:1 association affinity with association constants of 1.46 × 104 M-1, 1.86 × 107 M-1, 2.69 × 105 M-1, 2.13 × 104 M-1 for AMHMPQ-metal ions (Cr3+, Cu2+, Fe3+, and Gd3+ ions), respectively. Paper- and mask-based kits are developed to explore the utility of the designed chemosensor. Additionally, AMHMPQ acts as a reusable sensor for two, seven, two, and zero cycles for Cr3+, Cu2+, Fe3+, and Gd3+ ions, respectively, when checked with EDTA.

Abstract
Reactive oxygen species (ROS) are omnipresent in natural aquatic environments, and play an important role in biogeochemical cycles. One of the dominant sources of ROS in surface waters was thought to be from dissolved organic matter (DOM) interacting with photochemical process. The properties of DOM were different between the flood and drought periods in lakes; yet, information on how these variations influence ROS photoproduction is unknown. Through a three-year study, the photochemical properties of DOM and the resultant ROS photoproduction between the flood and drought period were determined in the largest freshwater lake in China (Lake Poyang). Results found that quantum yield coefficients of excited triplets (3CDOM*), apparent quantum yields of singlet oxygen (1O2) and hydroxyl radicals (•OH) were holistically higher in the flood period than those in the drought period. The optical properties of DOM showed that DOM in the flood period featured an allochthonous input, accompanied by higher molecular size (E2/E3), aromatic content (SUVA254), humification degree (HIX), while DOM in the drought period was mainly internal input. Fourier transform ion cyclotron resonance mass spectrometry (FI-ICR MS) further revealed that some refractory components, such as lignin-like and carboxyl-rich alicyclic molecules (CRAM) presented higher abundance in the flood period, and played the positive impacts on ROS production. Orthogonal partial least squares (OPLS) were used to build novel multivariate predictive models for indicating the spatio-temporal ROS production. Also, the relatively higher steady-state concentrations of 3CDOM* and 1O2 in the flood period could significantly diminish the half-lives of acetochlor. Considering the photochemical activity of DOM varied considerably at different periods, this study provided a new method to predict ROS production and contributed to a new insight into stage-specific emerging contaminants removing in natural aquatic environments.

Abstract
Bioelectrochemical systems (BESs) with integrated photoactive components have been shown to be a promising strategy for enhancing the performance for bioenergy generation and pollutant removal. This study revealed an efficient photo-BES with an enhanced pollutant degradation rate by utilizing self-produced biomolecules as photosensitizers in situ. Results showed that the BES could increase the coulombic efficiency from 60.8% to 73.0% and the degradation rate of bisphenol A (BPA) from 0.030 to 0.189 h-1 when the suspension in the reactor was illuminated with simulated sunlight in the absence of any external photosensitizers. We identified that the regular BES released many organic substances into the reactor during operation. These substances, including dissolved biomolecules and solid cell residues, were photoactive for producing hydroxyl radicals during light illumination. Quenching experiments verified that the •OH generated from the self-produced biophotosensitizers contributed to the enhanced degradation of BPA. Additionally, the phototransformation of biophotosensitizers was also observed in photo-BES. The quantity of tyrosine protein-like components decreased, but that of the humic components remained relatively stable. Our findings imply that BESs with integrated self-produced biophotosensitizers may be promising for constructing advanced electrochemical and biological systems for synchronous bioelectricity production and degradation of organic pollutants in wastewater treatments.

Abstract
Chlorine, UV254, and ozone are three typical processes commonly used for wastewater disinfection, which could change the photoreactivity of dissolved organic matter (DOM) in effluents of wastewater treatment plants (WWTPs). The photoinduced reactive species (RS) from DOM, primarily including the excited triplet state of DOM (3DOM*), singlet oxygen (1O2), and hydroxyl radical (•OH), play important roles in the attenuation of contaminants. However, the effect of disinfection processes on the photosensitized degradation of contaminants is poorly understood. This paper presents the first evidence that 3DOM*, 1O2, and •OH interaction with three typical contaminants (diphenhydramine, cimetidine, and N,N-diethyl-m-toluamide (DEET)) was largely impacted by DOM after disinfection. The results of electron spin resonance (ESR) spectrometry and laser flash photolysis (LFP) experiments demonstrated that the chlorination increased the formation rate of 3DOM* and 1O2, while UV254 irradiation and ozonation decreased the formation rate of these RS. All these three disinfection processes promoted the photoproduction of •OH and increased the photodegradation rate constants (kobs) of DEET by 26-361%. The kobs of diphenhydramine, cimetidine, and DEET correlated positively with the formation rate of 3DOM*, 1O2, and •OH, respectively. The bimolecular reaction rate constant of 3DOM* with diphenhydramine increased by ∼41% after chlorination. These findings suggest that disinfection processes altered the photogeneration of RS from DOM, which significantly impacts the fate of trace pollutants in aquatic environments.

Abstract
The photochemical reactivity of dissolved organic carbon from biochar (DBC) was higher than dissolved organic matter (DOM), but the photo-transformation of DBC in the presence of DOM under various conditions are poorly understood. Here, we studied the effects of Ca2+ and pH on the photo-induced changes in the optical and structural properties of DOM in source water with biochar. During DBC photobleaching, the DBC released from bulk DBC while the humic-like component formed. The release of DBC and the formation of humic-like component were inhibited by the presence of Ca2+ attributed to the inhibition of triplet excited state of DOM (3DOM*) and singlet oxygen (1O2) generation. Moreover, the 3DOM* yield increased while the 1O2 generation decreased as pH decreased from neutral, resulting in the increased formation of humic-like component and decreased release of DBC. The characterizations of ultrafiltration-isolated colloidal DOM after irradiation showed that hydrophilicity and the colloidal size of released DBC decreased in the presence of Ca2+. Additionally, the colloidal size of released DBC decreased while the hydrophilicity of DBC enhanced with increasing pH from neutral. This study not only gives insight into the DBC photo-transformation in the presence of DOM under various conditions but also reveals the influence of DBC on the variation of DOM properties during irradiation.

Abstract
Antibiotic residues in effluents discharged from wastewater treatment plants (WWTPs) have been considered high-risk organics due to biorefractory property and potential toxicity. Secondary pollution and unsustainability existed in advanced treatment of secondary effluent are currently in urgent need of improvement. In this study, a sustainably green strategy based on Rhodopseudomonas palustris (R.palustris) by regulating the structure of extracellular polymeric substances (EPS) was proposed for the first time to achieve efficiently removal of sulfadiazine (SDZ). Results showed that 0.2 V was the optimal external potential for R.palustris to efficiently remove SDZ, where the biodegradation rate constant obtained at this potential was 4.87-folds higher than that in open-circuit mode and a complete removal was achieved within 58 h in the presence of EPS extracted at this potential. Three-dimensional excitation-emission matrix (3D-EEM) spectra analysis suggested that tryptophan protein-like, tyrosine protein-like, humic acid-like and fulvic acid-like substances present in EPS were the main effective components which was responsible for the indirect photodegradation of SDZ. The quenching experiments showed that 3EPS* was the dominant reactive species which accounted for 90% of SDZ removal. This study provides new implications for the advanced treatment of secondary effluent organic matters by developing eco-friendly bioaugmentation technology and biomaterials.

Abstract
Chlorination is the most common disinfection technology used to treat wastewater effluent discharged into receiving aquatic environments. Effluent organic matter (EfOM) abundant in wastewater is a well-known photosensitizer and it greatly affects phototransformation of antibiotics in water. However, effects of chlorination on the characteristics and photochemical properties of EfOM have not been studied in sufficient detail. This paper investigated effects of chlorination on the characteristics of EfOM, and its impact on the phototransformation of sulfamethoxazole (SMX). Correlations between the EfOM characteristics and steady-state concentrations of reactive intermediates (RI) formed in the system were established. Chlorination was shown to preferentially remove the aromatic protein-like substances in EfOM, and the incorporation of chlorine into followed by the cleavage of the aromatic rings in EfOM molecules led to the formation of low molecular aliphatic organic matter. Both unaltered and chlorinated EfOM promoted the photodegradation of SMX whose rate constant in the wastewater was 1.32-1.65 times higher than that in pH 8 phosphate buffer. However, the rate of SMX photodegradation decreased at higher chlorination concentrations. The photodegradation of SMX was found to proceed through direct photolysis and oxidation by the RIs generated from EfOM and the self-sensitization of SMX. The steady-state concentrations of ·OH, 1O2 and 3EfOM* were 2.15-5.50 × 10-16, 0.42-1.51 × 10-13, and 2.54-5.82 × 10-14 M in unaltered and chlorinated wastewater. The steady-state concentrations of ·OH were well correlated with the removal of the fluorescence regional integration (ΔFRI) for humic-like and soluble microbial products (SMPs), while the photodegradation rate constant of SMX and the steady-state concentration of 1O2 and 3EfOM* showed good correlations with ΔFRI for tryptophan and fulvic-like substances. Six transformation products (TPs) of SMX were identified. These findings provide new insights into the photochemical properties of chlorinated EfOM in the aquatic environments and its roles in the degradation of antibiotics and other trace-level pharmaceuticals.

Abstract
The triplet excited state of dissolved organic matter (3DOM⁎) is highly effective in the photodegradation of a broad spectrum of trace organic pollutants (TOPs), and its photoactivity is affected by concomitant metal ions in surface waters. However, the impact of environmental metal ions on the 3DOM⁎-induced photodegradation of TOPs has not been systemically explored. Herein, we investigated the effect of environmental Cu2+ on the 3DOM⁎-induced photodegradation kinetics of 16 TOPs. A fluorescence quenching experiment showed that a Cu(II)-DOM complex was formed. For the TOPs with stronger electron-donating groups (triplet-labile moieties, e.g., phenols and anilines), Cu2+ complexation notably inhibited 3DOM⁎-induced photodegradation. This may be ascribed to the decrease of 3DOM⁎ steady-state concentration because Cu2+ complexation reduces its formation rates and enhances scavenging rates tested by sorbic acid isomerization experiment. Meanwhile, it was found that Cu2+ complexation facilitated the photolysis of refractory TOPs (lower triplet reactivity) because of enhanced electron transfer between DOM and Cu(II), causing photoinduced OH formation. These findings implied that 3DOM⁎ reactivity differences in TOPs could affect the photodegradation rates in the complex system, which was confirmed via a linear correlation of photodegradation rate ratios for 16 TOPs induced by 3DOM⁎ in the presence/absence of Cu2+ with their 3DOM⁎ reactivity. These findings helped to improve our understanding of the photochemical reactivity of 3DOM⁎ in natural waters, especially the effects of environmentally concomitant metal ions.

Abstract
Permanganate has been widely used in the remediation of contaminated water due to its relatively strong oxidation properties and ease of use. The ubiquitous dissolved organic matter (DOM) in natural waters causes a significant sink of permanganate in treatments, which further impacts the photoformation of reactive species and the removal of trace pollutants by DOM. Significantly, the effect of permanganate oxidation on the photoreactivity of DOM remains unknown. The present paper investigated for the first time the photophysical and photochemical properties variation of DOM from different sources after permanganate oxidation. Results showed that the permanganate oxidation caused a decrease in UV absorbance, fluorescence intensity, aromaticity, and molecular weight for all tested DOM samples, as well as photoformation rate of DOM triplet states (3DOM⁎), singlet oxygen (1O2), and hydroxyl radical (OH) under simulated sunlight. Quantum yield of 1O2 showed positively linear correlations with both triplet quantum yield coefficient (fTMP) and E2/E3 (ratio of absorbance at 254 and 365 nm) for all the DOM samples before and after permanganate oxidation. The quantum yield of OH exhibited no significant correlation with fTMP or E2/E3. Permanganate oxidation inhibited the DOM-photosensitized indirect photodegradation of pollutants that do not absorb sunlight (e.g., decreased by 15-29%). For the tested pollutants that undergo direct photolysis under sunlight, their photodegradation was promoted (e.g., increased by 1-19%) in the permanganate oxidized DOM solutions due to the decrease of light-screening effect by DOM. These findings suggest that permanganate oxidation affects the photoreactivity of DOM and the corresponding photochemical fate of organic pollutants in natural waters.

Abstract
Dissolved black carbon (DBC) is regarded as an important part of the natural organic matter pool. However, it is unclear about DBC's photochemical activity and the relationships between reactive intermediates (RIs) and the molecular structure of DBC remain unclear. In this study, we investigate the photochemical formation ability of RIs and spectral parameters (E2/E3, S275-295) of DBC made from five types of plants at five pyrolysis temperatures. The results showed that there were good linear regressions between the RI quantum yields and the spectral parameters (E2/E3, S275-295), and this was indicative of the RI generation prediction from DBC under solar irradiation. The DBC-mediated photochemical experiment of sulfadiazine revealed that 3DBC* was the primary active species for the indirect photodegradation of sulfadiazine. Further studies indicated that a linear relationship was observed between the indirect photodegradation ability of sulfadiazine induced directly by 3DBC* at different pyrolysis temperatures and the 3DBC* quantum yields or E2/E3. These findings indicate that the simple models of the RI quantum yield as a function of spectral parameters can be used to evaluate the degradation of pollutants with known DBC spectral parameters.

Environmentally persistent free radicals (EPFRs) generated under irradiation have been widely detected in soil particles, atmospheric particles and microplastic particles, but the formation of EPFRs in water is not well understood. This study investigated the formation of EPFRs on particulate organic matter (POM) in water contaminated by anthracene (Ant) under irradiation. The photoformation and decay progress of EPFRs was represented with the help of electron paramagnetic resonance (EPR) technique on both actual POM and Fe(III)-montmorillonite simulated samples. EPR signals at the range of 1016 to 1017 spin/g were detected and the half-life time of EPFRs stored in water was at around 16.62 h and 60.80 h, much shorter than those in the air. The g factors were all larger than 2.0040, which indicated the generation of oxygen centered EPFRs. The primary intermediates were identified by gas chromatography-mass spectrometer (GC-MS) and a possible EPFR formation pathway during Ant degradation was proposed. The interaction between Ant and POM, and the hydroxylation and carbonylation of the intermediates made contributions to the generation of EPFRs. Meanwhile, the indirect photodegradation of bisphenol A (BPA) has been demonstrated by analyzing the reactive oxygen species (ROS) and photogenerated electrons in the solution with POM containing EPFRs. It is found that hydroxyl radicals (•OH) and singlet oxygen (1O2) were induced and might promote the photodegration. Overall, our present study provided useful information to understand the photoformation of EPFRs on POM and their fate in aqueous environments.

WATER RESEARCH 2022; 208:117875. Abstract
Photochemical properties of dissolved organic matter (DOM) vary widely in natural and engineered water systems due to the different dominant compositions. However, seasonal patterns of DOM photochemical properties in urban rivers remain unclear. In this study, two seasons (wet and dry) of water samples were collected from eleven sites throughout the Pearl River (China) to investigate the spatiotemporal variability of DOM optical and photochemical properties. The optical properties of DOM in the Pearl River were characterized by UV-vis and fluorescence spectroscopies, which showed the substantial decrease in absorption coefficient and fluorescence intensity and increase in absorbence ratio (E2/E3) and specific absorption coefficient (SUVA) from the wet to dry season. The photochemical properties in terms of the apparent quantum yields of 3DOM*, 1O2 and ·OH from DOM (Φ3DOM*, Φ1O2 and Φ·OH, DOM) under illumination also displayed a significant decrease from the wet to the dry season. Spearman's rank correlation analysis revealed the strongest relationships between Φ3DOM*, Φ1O2 and Φ·OH, DOM and the relative abundance of microbial humic-like component (C2%) derived from parallel factor analysis (PARAFAC). Partial least squares regression (PLSR) modelling exhibited an excellent prediction strength for steady-state concentrations of 1O2 ([1O2]ss) and ·OH ([·OH]ss) with adjusted R2 values of 0.85 and 0.91, respectively, by using DOC concentration ([DOC]), optical properties, nitrate and nitrite concentrations as the response variables. In addition, the model identified that the Fmax of humic-like component C4 (Fmax-C4) was the most effective predictor amongst the used response variables. This study provides an approach to describe and predict the seasonal patterns of DOM photochemical properties in urbanized rivers, offering a good understanding of the formation mechanism of reactive species from river DOM.

Abstract
It's a new perspective to explore the influences of chromophoric dissolved organic matter (CDOM) components and environmental factors on the removal of sulfisoxazole (SIX) from the water matrix. Reactive intermediates (RIs) trapping experiments demonstrated that excited triplet-state CDOM (3CDOM⁎) played a dominant promoting role (54.11%) in the CDOM-mediated SIX indirect photodegradation. Additionally, terrestrial humic-like (C1, C3 and C4) and marine humic-like (C2) fluorescent components were identified by parallel factor (PARAFAC) analysis of CDOM excitation-emission matrix spectroscopy (EEMs). C1 and C4 were significantly correlated (R2 > 0.91) with the SIX degradation rate owing to their higher productivity of RIs and a greater contribution to the production of 3CDOM⁎ compared to others. Salinity, pH and HCO3- were conducive to the SIX indirect photodegradation, while metal ions (Fe3+ and Cu2+), halogen ions (Cl- and Br-) and NO3- were opposite. These findings are essential for understanding the environmental fate of SIX in coastal waters.
