Review on Recent Progress in Nitrogen-Doped Graphene: Synthesis, Characterization, and Its Potential Applications

Facile synthesis of tantalum decorated on iron selenide with nitrogen-doped graphene hybrid for the sensitive detection of trolox in berries: Density functional theory interpretation

This work presents a hydrothermal method followed by a sonochemical treatment for synthesizing tantalum decorated on iron selenide (Ta/FeSe2) integrated with nitrogen-doped graphene (NGR) as a susceptible electrode material for detecting trolox (TRX) in berries samples. The surface morphology, structural characterizations, and electrochemical performances of the synthesized Ta/FeSe2/NGR composite were analyzed via spectrophotometric and voltammetry techniques. The GCE modified with Ta/FeSe2/NGR demonstrated an impressive linear range of 0.1 to 580.3 μM for TRX detection. Additionally, it achieved a remarkable limit of detection (LOD) of 0.059 μM, and it shows a high sensitivity of 2.266 μA μМ-1 cm-2. Here, we used density functional theory (DFT) to investigate the structures of TRX and TRX quinone and the locations of energy levels and electron transfer sites. The developed sensor exhibits significant selectivity, satisfactory cyclic and storage stability, and notable reproducibility. Moreover, the practicality of TRX was assessed in different types of berries, yielding satisfactory recoveries.

Modality-Tunable Exfoliated N-Doped Graphene as Effective Electrolyte Additive for High-Performance Lithium-Sulfur Batteries

While chemically doped graphene has shown great promise, the lack of cost-effective manufacturing has hindered its use. This study utilizes a facile fabrication approach for modality-tunable N-doped graphene via thermal annealing of aqueous-phase-exfoliated few-layered graphene from a Taylor-Couette reactor. This method demonstrates a high level of N-doping (27 atom % N) and offers modality tunability of the C-N bond without foregoing scalability and green chemistry principles. The resulting N-doped graphene, with varying N content and doping modality, is utilized in the lithium-sulfur battery electrolyte to address low ionic conductivity, lithium polysulfide (LiPS) shuttling, and Li anode instability. The study reveals that higher N content and pyridinic N modality graphene in the electrolyte positively influence battery performance. The results are 2-fold: higher overall N content improves capacity retention (73%) after 225 cycles at 0.2 C, and pyridinic-type nitrogen demonstrates the best performance at high C rates, exhibiting a 4-fold capacity increase relative to the reference cell at 2 C. Further, the computational study validates the adsorption affinity of LiPS to pyridinic nitrogen and improved Li+ mobility on the graphene backbone observed experimentally. This first experimental study on the impact of N-dopant concentration and modality on electrochemical performance provokes insights into tailoring N functionalization to achieve superior electrochemical performance.

Impact of Nitrogen-Enriched 1T/2H-MoS2/CdS as an Electrode Material for Hybrid Supercapacitor

Transition metal chalcogenides (TMX) have attracted energy researchers due to their role as high-performance electrode materials for energy storage devices. A facile one-pot hydrothermal technique was adopted to synthesize a molybdenum disulfide/cadmium sulfide (MoS2/CdS) (MCS) composite. The as-prepared samples were subjected to characterization techniques such as XRD, FT-IR, SEM, TEM, and XPS to assess their structure, morphology, and oxidation states. The MoS2/CdS (MCS) composites were prepared in three different ratios of molybdenum and cadmium metals. Among them, the MCS 1:2 (Mo:Cd) ratio showed better electrochemical performance with a high specific capacitance of 1336 F g-1 (high specific capacity of 185.83 mAh g-1) at a specific current of 1 A g-1 for half-cell studies. Later, a hybrid supercapacitor (HSC) device was fabricated with N-doped graphene (NG) as an anode and MCS (1:2) as a cathode, delivering a high specific energy of 34 Wh kg-1 and a specific power of 7500 W kg-1. The high nitrogen content in the MoS2 structure in MCS composites alters the device's performance, where CdS supports the composite structure through its conductivity and encourages the easy accessibility of ions. The device withstands up to 10 000 cycles with a higher Coulombic efficiency of 97% and a capacitance retention of 90.25%. The high-performance NG//MCS (1:2) HSC may be a potential candidate alternative to the existing conventional material.

Assessment of doped graphene in the removal of atrazine from water

Atrazine is a widely used toxic herbicide that poses a threat to both the environment and human health. This study investigates the removal of Atrazine from water through armchair-hexagonal hexagonal graphene quantum dots (AHEX) simulations. The investigations are performed using density functional theory at the exchange-correlation hybrid functional B3LYP/3-21G level of theory. The activity of pristine AHEX, with a total dipole moment of 0.0 (debye), is enhanced by doping with boron (B), nitrogen (N), and sulfur atoms (S), resulting in increased total dipole moments of 8.99, 5.29, and 4.14 Debye respectively. This enhancement occurs without any structural deformation due to the doping process. Our results show significant adsorption capacity of the doped nanographene for Atrazine, evidenced by the high adsorption energies of 0.52 eV for boron, 0.62 eV for nitrogen, and 2.97 eV for sulfur. Charge distribution on the atrazine complexes further confirms effective interaction, with values of 0.03,  - 0.018, and 0.032 (e). UV-vis spectroscopy reveals that the prominent absorption peaks of boron and nitrogen-doped samples, initially at ~ 658.8 and 431 nm, undergo a redshift to ~ 676 and 444.3 nm after adsorption, respectively. This redshift aligns with the dominant excitation moving to lower energies following adsorption. Conversely, the sulfurated nanographene shows a blue shift from 980.66 to 485.41 nm. These findings highlight the potential of doped nanographene as an effective treatment for atrazine-contaminated water.

Aminotriazine derived N-doped mesoporous carbon with a tunable nitrogen content and their improved oxygen reduction reaction performance

The electrocatalytic activity of carbon materials is highly dependent on the controlled modulation of their composition and porosity. Herein, mesoporous N-doped carbon with different amounts of nitrogen was synthesized through a unique strategy of using a high nitrogen containing CN precursor, 3-amino 1,2,4 triazine (3-ATZ) which is generally used for the preparation of carbon nitrides, integrated with the combination of a templating method and high temperature treatment. The nitrogen content and the graphitisation of the prepared materials were finely tuned with the simple adjustment of the carbonisation temperature (800-1100 °C). The optimised sample as an electrocatalyst for oxygen reduction reaction (ORR) exhibited an onset potential of 0.87 V vs. RHE with a current density of 5.1 mA cm-2 and a high kinetic current density (Jk) of 33.1 mA cm-2 at 0.55 V vs. RHE. The characterisation results of the prepared materials indicated that pyridinic and graphitic nitrogen in the carbon framework promoted ORR activity with improved four-electron selectivity and excellent methanol tolerance and stability. DFT calculations demonstrated that the structural and planar defects in the N-doped carbon regulated the surface electronic properties of the electrocatalyst, leading to a reduction in the energy barrier for the ORR activity. This strategy has the potential to unlock a platform for designing a series of catalysts for electrochemical applications.

Remarkable Active Site Utilization in Edge-Hosted-N Doped Carbocatalysts for Fenton-Like Reaction

Improving the utilization of active sites in carbon catalysts is significant for various catalytic reactions, but still challenging, mainly due to the lack of strategies for controllable introduction of active dopants. Herein, a novel "Ar plasma etching-NH3 annealing" strategy is developed to regulate the position of active N sites, while maintaining the same nitrogen species and contents. Theoretical and experimental results reveal that the edge-hosted-N doped carbon nanotubes (E-N-CNT), with only 0.29 at.% N content, show great affinity to peroxymonosulfate (PMS), and exhibit excellent Fenton-like activity by generating singlet oxygen (1O2), which can reach as high as 410 times higher than the pristine CNT. The remarkable utilization of edge-hosted nitrogen atom is further verified by the edge-hosted-N enriched carbocatalyst, which shows superior capability for 4-chlorophenol degradation with a turnover frequency (TOF) value as high as 3.82 min-1, and the impressive TOF value can even surpass those of single-atom catalysts. This work proposes a controllable position regulation of active sites to improve atom utilization, which provides a new insight into the design of excellent Fenton-like catalysts with remarkable atom utilization efficiency.

The Facile Production of p-Chloroaniline Facilitated by an Efficient and Chemoselective Metal-Free N/S Co-Doped Carbon Catalyst

The catalytic hydrogenation of the toxic and harmful p-chloronitrobenzene to produce the value-added p-chloroaniline is an essential reaction for the sustainable chemical industry. Nevertheless, ensuring satisfactory control of its chemoselectivity is a great challenge. In this work, a N/S co-doped metal-free carbon catalyst has been fabricated by using cysteine as a source of C, N, and S. The presence of calcium citrate (porogen agent) in the mixture subjected to pyrolysis provided the carbon with porosity, which permitted us to overcome the issues associated with the loss of heteroatoms during an otherwise necessary activation thermal treatment. Full characterization was carried out and the catalytic performance of the metal-free carbon material was tested in the hydrogenation reaction of p-chloronitrobenzene to selectively produce p-chloroaniline. Full selectivity was obtained but conversion was highly dependent on the introduction of S due to the synergetic effect of S and N heteroatoms. The N/S co-doped carbon (CYSCIT) exhibits a mesoporous architecture which favors mass transfer and a higher doping level, with more exposed N and S doping atoms which act as catalytic sites for the hydrogenation of p-chloronitrobenzene, resulting in enhanced catalytic performance when compared to the N-doped carbon obtained from melamine and calcium citrate (MELCIT) used as a reference.

Generated White Light Having Adaptable Chromaticity and Emission, Using Spectrally Reconfigurable Microcavities

Metal-free, luminescent, carbogenic nanomaterials (LCNMs) constitute a novel class of optical materials with low environmental impact. LCNMs, e.g., carbon dots (CDs), graphitic carbon nitride (g-C3N4), and carbonized polymer microspheres (CPM) show strong blue/cyan emissions, but rather weak yellow/red emission. This has been a serious drawback in applying them to light-emitting and bio-imaging applications. Here, by integrating single-component LCNMs in photonic microcavities, the study spectroscopically engineers the coupling between photonic modes in these microcavities and optical transitions to "reconfigure" the emission spectra of these luminescent materials. Resonant photons are confined in the microcavity, which allows selective re-excitation of phosphors to effectively emit down-converted photons. The down-converted photons re-excite the phosphors and are multiply recycled, leading to enhanced yellow/red emissions and resulting in white-light emission (WLE). Furthermore, by adjusting photonic stop bands of microcavity components, color adaptable (cool, pure, and warm) WLE is flexibly generated, which precisely follows the black-body Planckian locus in the chromaticity diagram. The proposed approach offers practical low-cost chromaticity-adjustable WLE from single-component, luminescent materials without any chemical or surface modification, or elaborate machinery and processing, paving the way for practical WLE devices.

Unveiling the Reaction Mechanism of the N(2D) + Pyridine Reaction: Ring-Contraction versus 7-Membered-Ring Formation Channels

Despite the relevance of the reactions of the prototypical nitrogen-containing six-membered aromatic molecule (N-heterocyclic) of pyridine (C6H5N) in environmental science, astrochemistry, planetary science, prebiotic chemistry, and materials science, few experimental/theoretical studies exist on the bimolecular reactions involving pyridine and neutral atomic/molecular radicals. We report a combined experimental and theoretical study on the elementary reaction of pyridine with excited nitrogen atoms, N(2D), aimed at providing information about the primary reaction products and their branching fractions (BFs). From previous crossed molecular beam (CMB) experiments with mass-spectrometric detection and present synergistic calculations of the reactive potential energy surface (PES) and product BFs we have unveiled the reaction mechanism. It is found that the reaction proceeds via N(2D) barrierless addition to pyridine that, via bridged intermediates followed by N atom "sliding" into the ring, leads to 7-membered-ring structures. They further evolve, mainly via ring-contraction mechanisms toward 5-membered-ring radical products and, to a smaller extent, via H-displacement mechanisms toward 7-membered-ring isomeric products and their isomers. Using the theoretical statistical estimates, an improved fit of the experimental data previously reported has been obtained, leading to the following results for the dominant product channels: C4H4N (pyrrolyl) + HCN (BF = 0.61 ± 0.20), C3H3N2 (1H-imidazolyl/1H-pyrazolyl) + C2H2 (BF = 0.11 ± 0.06), and C5H4N2 (7-membered-ring molecules or pyrrole carbonitriles) + H (BF = 0.28 ± 0.10). The ring-contraction product channels C4H4N (pyrrolyl) + HCN, C3H3N2 (1H-imidazolyl) + C2H2, C3H3N2 (1H-pyrazolyl) + C2H2, and C5H5 (cyclopentadienyl) + N2 have statistical BFs of 0.54, 0.09, 0.11, and 0.07, respectively. Among the H-displacement channels, the cyclic-CHCHCHCHNCN + H channel and cyclic-CHCHCHCHCN2 + H are theoretically predicted to have a comparable BF (0.07 and 0.06, respectively), while the other isomeric 7-membered-ring molecule + H channel has a BF of 0.03. Pyrrole-carbonitriles and 1H-ethynyl-1H-imidazole (+ H) isomeric channels have an overall BF of 0.03. Implications for the chemistry of Saturn's moon Titan and prebiotic chemistry, as well as for understanding the N-doping of graphene or carbon nanotubes, are noted.

Iron-impregnated cellulosic carbon as an effective electrocatalyst for seawater oxidation

The quest for cost effective but active electrocatalysts for water oxidation is at the forefront of research towards hydrogen economy. In this regard, bamboo as biomass derived N-doped cellulosic carbon has shown potential electrocatalytic performance towards water oxidation. The impregnation of optimum metallic Fe boosts the performance further, achieving an overpotential value of 238 mV at a benchmark current density of 10 mA cm-2. Owing to its promising OER performances in alkaline freshwater, the electrocatalyst was further explored in alkaline saline water and alkaline real seawater, exhibiting overpotentials of 272 mV and 280 mV, respectively, to reach 10 mA cm-2 current density. Most importantly, the protective graphitic multilayer surrounding the metallic Fe allowed the electrocatalyst to demonstrate excellent durability over 30 h even at a high current density in alkaline real seawater electrolyte.

Capillary-driven microchip integrated with nickel phosphide hybrid-modified electrode for the electrochemical detection of glucose

BACKGROUND

Transition metal phosphides with properties similar to platinum metal have received increasing attention for the non-enzymatic detection of glucose. However, the requirement of highly corrosive reagent during sample pretreatment would impose a potential risk to the human body, limiting their practical applications.

RESULTS

In this study, we report a self-powered microfluidic device for the non-enzymatic detection of glucose using nickel phosphide (Ni2P) hybrid as the catalyst. The Ni2P hybrid is synthesized by pyrolysis of metal-organic framework (MOF)-based precursor and in-situ phosphating process, showing two linear detection ranges (1 μM-1 mM, 1 mM-6 mM) toward glucose with the detection limit of 0.32 μM. The good performance of Ni2P hybrid for glucose is attributed to the synergistic effect of Ni2P active sites and N-doped porous carbon matrix. The microchip is integrated with a NaOH-loaded paper pad and a capillary-based micropump, enabling the automatic NaOH redissolution and delivery of sample solution into the detection chamber. Under the optimized condition, the Ni2P hybrid-based microchip realized the detection of glucose in a user-friendly way. Besides, the feasibility of using this microchip for glucose detection in real serum samples has also been validated.

SIGNIFICANCE

This article presents a facile fabrication method utilizing a MOF template to synthesize a Ni2P hybrid catalyst. By leveraging the synergy between the Ni2P active sites and the N-doped carbon matrix, an exceptional electrochemical detection performance for glucose has been achieved. Additionally, a self-powered chip device has been developed for convenient glucose detection based on the pre-established high pH environment on the chip.

Advanced Characterization Techniques and Theoretical Calculation for Single Atom Catalysts in Fenton-like Chemistry

Single-atom catalysts (SACs) have attracted extensive attention due to their unique catalytic properties and wide range of applications. Advanced characterization techniques, such as energy-dispersive X-ray spectroscopy, X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy, transmission electron microscopy, scanning electron microscopy, and X-ray absorption fine-structure spectroscopy, have been used to investigate the elemental compositions, structural morphologies, and chemical bonding states of SACs in detail, aiming at unraveling the catalytic mechanism. Meanwhile, theoretical calculations, such as quantum chemical calculations and kinetic simulations, were used to predict the catalytic reaction pathways, active sites, and reaction kinetic behaviors of SACs, providing theoretical guidance for the design and optimization of SACs. This review overviews advanced characterization techniques and theoretical calculations for SACs in Fenton-like chemistry. Moreover, this work highlights the importance of advanced characterization techniques and theoretical calculations in the study of SACs and provides perspectives on the potential applications of SACs in the field of environmental remediation and the challenges of practical engineering.

Energy band modulation of Li2O-rGO core-shell as cathode sacrificial additive enables capacity enhancement of hard carbon anode in Li-ion batteries

Lithium oxides (Li2O) possess a considerable theoretical capacity, rendering them highly promising as cathodic pre-lithiation additives. However, its decomposition voltage exceeds the charging cut-off voltage of most cathode materials, hindering its direct use as a cathode sacrificial additive. Herein, we design a facile and safe method to reduce the decomposition energy of Li2O at room temperature to offset the irreversible capacity loss by using a core-shell structured Li2O-reduced graphene oxide (rGO)-polyethylene glycol (PEG) composite (denoted as Li2O-rGO-PEG). The graphene oxide (GO) was heat-treated to remove oxygen functional groups to synthesize rGO, and then reacted with Li2O to form a Li2O-rGO composite. According to the DFT calculations, the density of states at the Fermi level of Li2O-rGO becomes continuous and features a metallic nature, which significantly improves the electrical conductivity of Li2O and facilitates electron conduction that modify the delithiation potential of Li2O. PEG was used to enhance the cohesive force between rGO and Li2O and to protect Li2O from atmospheric contamination. Moreover, in order to demonstrate the excellent pre-lithiation ability of Li2O-rGO-PEG composite, hard carbon (HC) with low initial coulombic efficiency (ICE) was used as the anode. In the application of LFP (Li2O)/HC full cell, Li2O was decomposed to Li+ to effectively improve the initial charge capacity from 149.7 to 200 mAh/g and discharge capacity from 104.2 to 147.5 mAh/g, which are 33.6 % and 41.6 % higher than those of the pristine LFP/HC full cell, respectively. The cathode pre-lithiation method proposed in this work is simple and environmentally friendly. The successful utilization of Li2O as a pre-lithiation additive effectively addressed the issue of low initial coulombic efficiency of the HC, indicating excellent prospects for practical applications.

Pressure-Induced Defects and Reduced Size Endow TiO2 with High Capacity over 20 000 Cycles and Excellent Fast-Charging Performance in Sodium Ion Batteries

Anatase TiO2 as sodium-ion-battery anode has attracted increased attention because of its low volume change and good safety. However, low capacity and poor rate performance caused by low electrical conductivity and slow ion diffusion greatly impede its practical applications. Here, a bi-solvent enhanced pressure strategy that induces defects (oxygen vacancies) into TiO2 via N doping and reduces its size by using mutual-solvent ethanol and dopant dimethylformamide as pressure-increased reagent of tetrabutyl orthotitanate tetramer is proposed to fabricate N-doped TiO2/C nanocomposites. The induced defects can increase ion storage sites, improve electrical conductivity, and decrease bandgap and ion diffuse energy barrier of TiO2. The size reduction increases contact interfaces between TiO2 and C and shortens ion diffuse distance, thus increasing extra ion storage sites and boosting ion diffusion rate of TiO2. The N-doped TiO2 possesses highly stable crystal structure with a slightly increase of 0.86% in crystal lattice spacing and 3.2% in particle size after fully sodiation. Consequently, as a sodium-ion battery anode, the nanocomposite delivers high capacity and superior rate capability along with ultralong cycling life. This work proposes a novel pressure-induced synthesis strategy that provides unique guidance for designing TiO2-based anode materials with high capacity and excellent fast-charging capability.

Characteristics and performance of layered two-dimensional materials under doping engineering

In recent years, doping engineering, which is widely studied in theoretical and experimental research, is an effective means to regulate the crystal structure and physical properties of two-dimensional materials and expand their application potential. Based on different types of element dopings, different 2D materials show different properties and applications. In this paper, the characteristics and performance of rich layered 2D materials under different types of doped elements are comprehensively reviewed. Firstly, 2D materials are classified according to their crystal structures. Secondly, conventional experimental methods of charge doping and heterogeneous atom substitution doping are summarized. Finally, on the basis of various theoretical research results, the properties of several typical 2D material representatives under charge doping and different kinds of atom substitution doping as well as the inspiration and expansion of doping systems for the development of related fields are discussed. Through this review, researchers can fully understand and grasp the regulation rules of different doping engineering on the properties of layered 2D materials with different crystal structures. It provides theoretical guidance for further improving and optimizing the physical properties of 2D materials, improving and enriching the relevant experimental research and device application development.

Role of Nitrogenous Functional Group Identity in Accelerating 1,2,3-Trichloropropane Degradation by Pyrogenic Carbonaceous Matter (PCM) and Sulfide Using PCM-like Polymers

Groundwater contamination by 1,2,3-trichloropropane (TCP) poses a unique challenge due to its human toxicity and recalcitrance to degradation. Previous work suggests that nitrogenous functional groups of pyrogenic carbonaceous matter (PCM), such as biochar, are important in accelerating contaminant dechlorination by sulfide. However, the reaction mechanism is unclear due, in part, to PCM's structural complexity. Herein, PCM-like polymers (PLPs) with controlled placement of nitrogenous functional groups [i.e., quaternary ammonium (QA), pyridine, and pyridinium cations (py+)] were employed as model systems to investigate PCM-enhanced TCP degradation by sulfide. Our results suggest that both PLP-QA and PLP-py+ were highly effective in facilitating TCP dechlorination by sulfide with half-lives of 16.91 ± 1.17 and 0.98 ± 0.15 days, respectively, and the reactivity increased with surface nitrogenous group density. A two-step process was proposed for TCP dechlorination, which is initiated by reductive ß-elimination, followed by nucleophilic substitution by surface-bound sulfur nucleophiles. The TCP degradation kinetics were not significantly affected by cocontaminants (i.e., 1,1,1-trichloroethane or trichloroethylene), but were slowed by natural organic matter. Our results show that PLPs containing certain nitrogen functional groups can facilitate the rapid and complete degradation of TCP by sulfide, suggesting that similarly functionalized PCM might form the basis for a novel process for the remediation of TCP-contaminated groundwater.

Laser irradiation of photothermal precursors - a novel approach to produce carbon materials for supercapacitors

A wide array of carbon materials finds extensive utility across various industrial applications today. Nonetheless, the production processes for these materials continue to entail elevated temperatures, necessitate the use of inert atmospheres, and often involve the handling of aggressive and toxic chemicals. The prevalent method for large-scale carbon material production, namely the pyrolysis of waste biomass and polymers, typically unfolds within the temperature range of 500-700 °C under a nitrogen (N2) atmosphere. Unfortunately, this approach suffers from significant energy inefficiency due to substantial heat loss over extended processing durations. In this work, we propose an interesting alternative: the carbonization of photothermal nanocellulose/polypyrrole composite films through CO2 laser irradiation in the presence of air. This innovative technique offers a swift and energy-efficient means of preparing carbon materials. The unique interaction between nanocellulose and polypyrrole imparts the film with sufficient stability to retain its structural integrity post-carbonization. This breakthrough opens up new avenues for producing binder-free electrodes using a rapid and straightforward approach. Furthermore, the irradiated film demonstrates specific and areal capacitances of 159 F g-1 and 62 μF cm-2, respectively, when immersed in a 2 M NaOH electrolyte. These values significantly surpass those achieved by current commercial activated carbons. Together, these attributes render CO2-laser carbonization an environmentally sustainable and ecologically friendly method for carbon material production.

Leveraging Curvature on N-Doped Carbon Materials for Hydrogen Storage

Carbon sorbent materials have shown great promise for solid-state hydrogen (H2) storage. Modification of these materials with nitrogen (N) dopants has been undertaken to develop materials that can store H2 at ambient temperatures. In this work density functional theory (DFT) calculations are used to systematically probe the influence of curvature on the stability and activity of undoped and N-doped carbon materials toward H binding. Specifically, four models of carbon materials are used: graphene, [5,5] carbon nanotube, [5,5] D5d-C120, and C60, to extract and correlate the thermodynamic properties of active sites with varying degrees of sp2 hybridization (curvature). From the calculations and analysis, it is found that graphitic N-doping is thermodynamically favored on more pyramidal sites with increased curvature. In contrast, it is found that the hydrogen binding energy is weakly affected by curvature and is dominated by electronic effects induced by N-doping. These findings highlight the importance of modulating the heteroatom doping configuration and the lattice topology when developing materials for H2 storage.

Facile synthesis of nanostructured Ni/NiO/N-doped graphene electrocatalysts for enhanced oxygen evolution reaction

Electrocatalysts containing a Ni/NiO/N-doped graphene interface have been synthesised using the ligand-assisted chemical vapor deposition technique. NiO nanoparticles were used as the substrate to grow N-doped graphene by decomposing vapours of benzene and N-containing ligands. The method was demonstrated with two nitrogen-containing ligands, namely dipyrazino[2,3-f:2',3'-h]quinoxaline-2,3,6,7,10,11-hexacarbonitrile (L) and melamine (M). The structure and composition of the as-synthesized composites were characterized by XRD, Raman spectroscopy, SEM, TEM and XPS. The composite prepared using the ligand L had NiO sandwiched between Ni and N-doped graphene and showed an overpotential of 292 mV at 10 mA cm-2 and a Tafel slope of 45.41 mV dec-1 for the OER, which is comparable to the existing noble metal catalysts. The composite prepared using the ligand M had Ni encapsulated by N-doped graphene without NiO. It showed an overpotential of 390 mV at 10 mA cm-2 and a Tafel slope of 78.9 mV dec-1. The ligand-assisted CVD route demonstrates a facile route to control the microstructure of the electrocatalysts.

Synthesis of cobalt phosphide hybrid for simultaneous electrochemical detection of ascorbic acid, dopamine, and uric acid

Ascorbic acid (AA), dopamine (DA), and uric acid (UA) are important biomarkers for the clinical screening of diseases. However, the simultaneous determination of these three analytes is still challenging. Herein, we report a facile metal-organic framework (MOF)-derived method to synthesize a cobalt phosphide (Co2P) hybrid for the simultaneous electrochemical detection of AA, DA and UA. The introduction of highly dispersed Co2P nanoparticles onto a P, N-doped porous carbon matrix is responsible for providing abundant active sites and facilitating electron transfer, thereby contributing to the improved electrocatalytic performance of the hybrid. Well-resolved oxidation peaks and an enhanced current response for the simultaneous oxidation of AA, DA, and UA were achieved using a Co2P hybrid-modified screen-printed electrode (Co2P hybrid-SPE) with the differential pulse voltammetry (DPV) method. The detection limits for AA, DA, and UA in simultaneous detection were calculated as 17.80 μM, 0.018 μM, and 0.068 μM (S/N = 3), respectively. Furthermore, the feasibility of using Co2P hybrid-SPE for the simultaneous detection of AA, DA, and UA in real serum samples was also confirmed.

Extended Quinolizinium-Fused Corannulene Derivatives: Synthesis and Properties

Reported here is the design and synthesis of a novel class of extended quinolizinium-fused corannulene derivatives with curved geometry. These intriguing molecules were synthesized through a rationally designed synthetic strategy, utilizing double Skraup-Doebner-Von Miller quinoline synthesis and a rhodium-catalyzed C-H activation/annulation (CHAA) as the key steps. Single-crystal X-ray analysis revealed a bowl depth of 1.28-1.50 Å and a unique "windmill-like" shape packing of 12a(2PF6-) due to the curvature and incorporation of two aminium ions. All of the newly reported curved salts exhibit green to orange fluorescence with enhanced quantum yields (Φf = 9-13%) and improved dispersibility compared to the pristine corannulene (Φf = 1%). The reduced optical energy gap and lower energy frontier orbital found by doping extended corannulene systems with nitrogen cations was investigated by UV-vis, fluorescence, and theoretical calculations. Electrochemical measurements reveal a greater electron-accepting behavior compared with that of their pyridine analogues. The successful synthesis, isolation, and evaluation of these curved salts provide a fresh perspective and opportunity for the design of cationic nitrogen-doped curved aromatic hydrocarbon-based materials.

Biomass substrate-derived graphene-like N-doped porous carbon nanosheet-supported PtCo nanocatalyst for efficient and selective hydrogenation of unsaturated furanic aldehydes

Unsaturated furanic aldehydes are derived from lignocellulosic biomass resources and subsequently used to produce valuable chemicals. However, the highly efficient, selective hydrogenation of the biomass-derived unsaturated furan CO bond remains challenging. Here we report that graphene-like nitrogen doped porous carbon (GNPC) nanosheets are synthesized from carbon-rich, sustainable, and renewable biomass precursors (glucose, fructose and 5-hydroxymethylfurfural, HMF) with high surface areas, large pore volumes and narrow mesopores. GNPC derived from HMF is an excellent catalyst support for PtCo nanoparticles with ultrafine nanoparticles size and homogeneous distributions. This catalyst is highly efficient for hydrogenation of biomass-derived furan-based unsaturated aldehydes, with high yields, to the corresponding unsaturated alcohols under mild conditions. This design strategy should further allow the development of selective, simple, green heterogeneous catalysts for challenging chemical transformations.

Vacancy-Enhanced Sb-N4 Sites for the Oxygen Reduction Reaction and Zn-Air Battery

With the advantages of a Fenton-inactive characteristic and unique p electrons that can hybridize with O2 molecules, p-block metal-based single-atom catalysts (SACs) for the oxygen reduction reaction (ORR) have tremendous potential. Nevertheless, their undesirable intrinsic activity caused by the closed d10 electronic configuration remains a major challenge. Herein, an Sb-based SAC featuring carbon vacancy-enhanced Sb-N4 active centers, corroborated by the results of high-angle annular dark-field scanning transmission electron microscopy and X-ray absorption fine structure, has been developed for an incredibly effective ORR. The obtained SbSA-N-C demonstrates a positive half-wave potential of 0.905 V and excellent structural stability in alkaline environments. Density functional theory calculations reveal that the carbon vacancies weaken the adsorption between Sb atoms and the OH* intermediate, thus promoting the ORR performance. Practically, the SbSA-N-C-based Zn-air batteries achieve impressive outcomes, such as a high power density of 181 mW cm-2, showing great potential in real-world applications.

Integrated hierarchical porous lignin-based carbon electrode for boosting membrane-free capacitive deionization areal adsorption capacity

The development of high value-added lignin-based functional porous carbon electrodes with excellent properties from sustainable industry lignin powder remains a challenge. This work aims to create robust, binder-free, conductive additives-free, and current collector-free monolithic porous carbon electrodes using industrial lignin powder for membrane-free capacitive deionization (CDI). The material exhibits high mechanical strength, hierarchical porosity structure, large uniform size, and thickness of just a few millimetres (<2.6 mm). In a three-electrode supercapacitor system, the areal specific capacitance of CLCA300-3-1.0 reaches 5.03-1.02 F cm-2 when the scan rate between 1 and 20 mV s-1 in 1 M NaCl solution. As CDI electrodes, the charge efficiency of CLCA300-3-1.0 at different voltages of 1.2 V, 1.4 V and 1.6 V is 0.53, 0.72 and 0.71, respectively. The energy consumption of CLCA280-3-1.0, CLCA300-3-1.0 and CLCA320-3-1.0 tested at 1.2 V are 3.27, 3.40 and 3.25 Wh m-3, respectively. In addition, with thickness increasing to 1.5 mm, the developed CLCA300-3-1.5 electrode exhibits an areal adsorption capacity of 0.46 mg cm-2, and relative highly capacity retention of 84.78 % after 70 cycles. The impressive desalination performance is attributed to the well-designed hierarchical porosity, superhydrophilicity and robust monolithic structure.

Switching Electric Double Layer Potential by Phase Structure Control for Advanced Oxygen Reduction Reaction of Cobalt@Nitrogen Doped Carbon Core-Shell

The key to design an advanced oxygen reduction reaction (ORR) electrocatalyst is a well-balance between the adsorption and desorption of oxygen intermediates. This study systematically evaluated the ORR activity of HCP and FCC cobalt core-shell cobalt/N-doped carbon (Cobalt@NC) catalyst via theoretical and experimental studies. The electronic structure calculations using density functional theory (DFT) calculations revealed that the ORR activity of carbon layer can be improved by 1) switching the electrostatic potential in the electrical double layer due to the polarization induced at the carbon-cobalt interface and 2) modulating the electron population in the bonding orbital in the C-O bonds in an ORR. The results revealed that an O atom is bounded stronger to the outer NC shell with FCC Cobalt than HCP Cobalt, which hindered the desorption steps of OH*. Experimentally, plasma-engineered HCP Cobalt@NC also showed remarkably advanced performance toward ORR compared to that FCC Cobalt@NC. The kinetic current density of HCP Cobalt@NC at 0.85 V versus RHE is calculated as 6.24 mA cm-2, which is six folds higher than FCC Cobalt@NC and even outperform 20 wt.% Pt/C. In a practical Aluminium-air battery, HCP Cobalt@NC also exhibited slightly higher peak power density (110.57 mW cm-2) compared to 20 wt.% Pt/C.

2D Ni2P/N-doped graphene heterostructure as a Novel electrocatalyst for hydrogen evolution reaction: A computational study

The main prerequisite for designing electrocatalysts with favorable performance is to examine the links between electronic structural features and catalytic activity. In this work, Ni2P as a model electrocatalyst and one of the most potent catalysts for hydrogen evolution reaction (HER) was utilized to develop various Ni2P and carbon-based (graphene and N-doped graphene) heterostructures. The characteristics of such structures (Ni2P, graphene, N-doped graphene, Ni2P/graphene, and Ni2P/N-doped graphene), including binding energies, the projected density of states (PDOS), band structure, charge density difference, charge transfer, Hirshfeld charge analysis, and minimum-energy path (MEP) towards HER were calculated and analyzed by density functional theory (DFT) approach. The coupling energy values of hybrid systems were correlated with the magnitude of charge transfer. The main factors driving a promising water-splitting reaction were explained by the data of PDOS, band structures, and charge analysis, including the inherent electronegativity of the N species alongside shifting the Fermi level toward the conductive band. It was also shown that a significant drop occurs in the HER energy barrier on Ni2P/graphene compared to the pristine Ni2P due to N doping on the graphene layer in the Ni2P/N-doped graphene heterostructure.

Selective NO2 Gas Sensors Employing Nitrogen- and Boron-Doped and Codoped Reduced Graphene Oxide

In this paper, we develop high-performance gas sensors based on heteroatom-doped and -codoped graphene oxide as a sensing material for the detection of NO2 at trace levels. Graphene oxide (GO) was doped with nitrogen and boron by a chemical method using urea and boric acid as precursors. The prepared samples were characterized by scanning electron microscopy (SEM), transmission electron microscopy (TEM), Raman spectroscopy, X-ray diffraction (XRD), and X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS). The obtained results proved the successful reduction of graphene oxide by doping effects, leading to the removal of some oxygen functional groups and restoration of an sp2 carbon structure. New bonds in honeycombs, such as pyridinic, pyrrolic, graphitic, B-C3, B-C2-O, and B-O, were created. Compared to the nondoped GO, the N/B-rGO materials exhibited enhanced responses toward low concentrations of NO2 (<1 ppm) at 100 °C. Particularly, the N-rGO-based device showed the highest sensitivity and lowest limit of detection.

Nitrogen-Rich Molybdenum Nitride Synthesized in a Crucible under Air

The triple bond in N2 is significantly stronger than the double bond in O2, meaning that synthesizing nitrogen-rich nitrides typically requires activated nitrogen precursors, such as ammonia, plasma-cracked atomic nitrogen, or high-pressure N2. Here, we report a synthesis of nitrogen-rich nitrides under ambient pressure and atmosphere. Using Na2MoO4 and dicyandiamide precursors, we synthesized nitrogen-rich γ-Mo2N3 in an alumina crucible under an ambient atmosphere, heated in a box furnace between 500 and 600 °C. Byproducts of this metathesis reaction include volatile gases and solid Na(OCN), which can be washed away with water. X-ray diffraction and neutron diffraction showed Mo2N3 with a rock salt structure having cation vacancies, with no oxygen incorporation, in contrast to the more common nitrogen-poor rock salt Mo2N with anion vacancies. Moreover, an increase in temperature to 700 °C resulted in molybdenum oxynitride, Mo0.84N0.72O0.27. This work illustrates the potential for dicyandiamide as an ambient-temperature metathesis precursor for an increased effective nitrogen chemical potential under ambient conditions. The classical experimental setting often used for solid-state oxide synthesis, therefore, has the potential to expand the nitride chemistry.

Transient chemical and structural changes in graphene oxide during ripening

Graphene oxide (GO)-the oxidized form of graphene-is actively studied in various fields, such as energy, electronic devices, separation of water, materials engineering, and medical technologies, owing to its fascinating physicochemical properties. One major drawback of GO is its instability, which leads to the difficulties in product management. A physicochemical understanding of the ever-changing nature of GO can remove the barrier for its growing applications. Here, we evidencde the presence of intrinsic, metastable and transient GO states upon ripening. The three GO states are identified using a [Formula: see text] transition peak of ultraviolet-visible absorption spectra and exhibit inherent magnetic and electrical properties. The presence of three states of GO is supported by the compositional changes of oxygen functional groups detected via X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy and structural information from X-ray diffraction analysis and transmission electron microscopy. Although intrinsic GO having a [Formula: see text] transition at 230.5 ± 0.5 nm is stable only for 5 days at 298 K, the intrinsic state can be stabilized by either storing GO dispersions below 255 K or by adding ammonium peroxydisulfate.

Progress of charge carrier dynamics and regulation strategies in 2D CxNy-based heterojunctions

Two-dimensional carbon nitrides (CxNy) have gained significant attention in various fields including hydrogen energy development, environmental remediation, optoelectronic devices, and energy storage owing to their extensive surface area, abundant raw materials, high chemical stability, and distinctive physical and chemical characteristics. One effective approach to address the challenges of limited visible light utilization and elevated carrier recombination rates is to establish heterojunctions for CxNy-based single materials (e.g. C2N3, g-C3N4, C3N4, C4N3, C2N, and C3N). The carrier generation, migration, and recombination of heterojunctions with different band alignments have been analyzed starting from the application of CxNy with metal oxides, transition metal sulfides (selenides), conductive carbon, and Cx'Ny' heterojunctions. Additionally, we have explored diverse strategies to enhance heterojunction performance from the perspective of carrier dynamics. In conclusion, we present some overarching observations and insights into the challenges and opportunities associated with the development of advanced CxNy-based heterojunctions.

Engineering functionalization and properties of graphene quantum dots (GQDs) with controllable synthesis for energy and display applications

Graphene quantum dots (GQDs), a new type of 0D nanomaterial, are composed of a graphene lattice with sp2 bonding carbon core and characterized by their abundant edges and wide surface area. This unique structure imparts excellent electrical properties and exceptional physicochemical adsorption capabilities to GQDs. Additionally, the reduction in dimensionality of graphene leads to an open band gap in GQDs, resulting in their unique optical properties. The functional groups and dopants in GQDs are key factors that allow the modulation of these characteristics. So, controlling the functionalization level of GQDs is crucial for understanding their characteristics and further application. This review provides an overview of the properties and structure of GQDs and summarizes recent developments in research that focus on their controllable synthesis, involving functional groups and doping. Additionally, we provide a comprehensive and focused explanation of how GQDs have been advantageously applied in recent years, particularly in the fields of energy storage devices and displays.

A sensitive sandwich-type electrochemical immunosensor using nitrogen-doped graphene/metal-organic framework-derived CuMnCoOx and Au/MXene for the detection of breast cancer biomarker

In terms of cancer-related deaths among women, breast cancer (BC) is the most common. Clinically, human epidermal growth receptor 2 (HER2) is one of the most commonly used diagnostic biomarkers for facilitating BC cell proliferation and malignant growth. In this study, a disposable gold electrode (DGE) modified with gold nanoparticle-decorated Ti3C2Tx (Au/MXene) was utilized as a sensing platform to immobilize the capturing antibody (Ab1/Au/MXene). Subsequently, nitrogen-doped graphene (NG) with a metal-organic framework (MOF)-derived copper-manganese-cobalt oxide, tagged as NG/CuMnCoOx, was used as a probe to label the detection antibody (Ab2). A sandwich-type immunosensor (NG/CuMnCoOx/Ab2/HER2-ECD /Ab1/Au/MXene/DGE) was developed to quantify HER2-ECD. NG/CuMnCoOx enhances the conductivity, electrocatalytic active sites, and surface area to immobilize Ab2. In addition, Au/MXene facilitates electron transport and captures more Ab1 on its surface. Under optimal conditions, the resultant immunosensor displayed an excellent linear range of 0.0001 to 50.0 ng. mL-1. The detection limit was 0.757 pg·mL-1 with excellent selectivity, appreciable reproducibility, and high stability. Moreover, the applicability for determining HER2-ECD in human serum samples indicates its ability to monitor tumor markers clinically.

Recent Progress in the Application of Ion Beam Technology in the Modification and Fabrication of Nanostructured Energy Materials

The development of green, renewable energy conversion and storage systems is an urgent task to address the energy crisis and environmental issues in the future. To achieve high performance, stable, and safe operation of energy conversion and storage systems, energy materials need to be modified and fabricated through rationalization. Among various modification and fabrication strategies, ion beam technology has been widely used to introduce various defects/dopants into energy materials and fabricate various nanostructures, where the structure, composition, and property of prefabricated materials can be further accurately tailored to achieve better performance. In this paper, we review the recent progress in the application of ion beam technology in material modification and fabrication, focusing on nanostructured energy materials for energy conversion and storage including photo- (electro-) water splitting, batteries (solar cells, fuel cells, and metal-ion batteries), supercapacitors, thermoelectrics, and hydrogen storage. This review first provides a brief basic overview of ion beam technology and describes the classification and technological advantages of ion beam technology in the modification and fabrication of materials. Then, modification of energy materials by ion beams is reviewed mainly concerning doping and defect introduction. Fabrication of energy materials is also discussed mainly in terms of heterojunctions, nanoparticles, nanocavities, and other nanostructures. In particular, we emphasize the advantages of ion beam technology in improving the performance of energy materials. Finally, we point out our understanding of challenges and future perspectives in applying ion beam technology for the modification and fabrication of energy materials.

Ab initiostudy of the processes of nitrogen functionalisation in graphene

Nitrogen functionalisation of graphene is studied with the help ofab initioelectronic structure methods. Both static formation energies and energy barriers obtained from nudged elastic band calculations are considered. If carbon defects are present in the graphene structure, low energy barriers on the order of 0.5 eV were obtained to incorporate nitrogen atoms inside the sheet. For defect-free graphene, much larger barriers in the range of 3.70-4.38 eV were found, suggesting an external energy source is required to complete this type of incorporation.

Synergistic effect of novel pyrite/N-doped reduced graphene oxide composite with heterojunction structure for enhanced photo-assisted reduction of Cr(VI) in oxic water: Specific role of molecular oxygen

To avoid severe aggregation and synergistically utilize the intrinsic and photocatalytic reducibility, pyrite (FeS2) was loaded onto N-doped reduced graphene oxides (N-rGO) to fabricate a novel FeS2/N-rGO heterojunction catalyst for enhanced chromium (Cr(VI)) reduction in oxic condition to simultaneously investigate the specific effect and role of dissolved oxygen (DO). Characterization results showed that strong interaction and combination of FeS2 and N-rGO not only achieved the uniform distribution of FeS2, but also increased the defects, and exposed more functional groups. Meanwhile, the Type II heterojunction was formed in FeS2/N-rGO, which facilitated the separation efficiency of photo-generated carriers and electrons, endowing FeS2/N-rGO a superior photocatalytic activity. Cr(VI) was almost completely reduced via FeS2/N-rGO within 60 min under irradiation (Cr(VI) = 10 mg/L, dosage = 0.2 g/L), 3 times that of pristine FeS2 (18.7 %). Trapping and Electron Spin Resonance (ESR) experiments indicated that photo-generated e- and derived O2- species from photoactivation of dioxygen (DO) were the key reactive species for the enhancement of photo-assisted Cr(VI) reduction, rather than reductive Fe2+ and S22- species. Although the photocatalysis of FeS2/N-rGO cannot directly generate hydroxyl radicals (OH), the oxidative OH ascribed to superoxide radicals (O2-), photo-induced holes and free DO preferentially consumed by Fe2+ and S22- with stronger reducibility. Hence, as compared to the anoxic condition, the reduction rate of Cr(VI) was slightly decreased, but still could be totally removed within 60 min in the oxic conditions. Due to the excessive amount of FeS2/N-rGO, Cr(III) after reduction would not be influenced by oxidative species and maintain stability under oxic condition. This study provided a facile modification strategy for FeS2 based composites and uncovered its working mechanism for Cr(VI) decontamination.

Nitrogen-Doped Graphene Materials with High Electrical Conductivity Produced by Electrochemical Exfoliation of Graphite Foil

Nitrogen-doped graphene-based materials are of utmost importance in sensing and energy conversion devices due to their unique physicochemical properties. However, the presence of defects such as pyrrolic nitrogen and oxygenated functional groups reduces their electrical conductivity. Herein, a two-step approach based on the electrochemical exfoliation of graphite foils in aqueous mixed electrolytes followed by thermal reduction at 900 °C is used to prepare high-quality few layers of N-doped graphene-based materials. The exfoliations were conducted in 0.1 M (NH4)2SO4 or H2SO4 and HNO3 (5 mM or 0.1 M) electrolytes mixtures and the HNO3 vol% varied. Chemical analysis demonstrated that the as-prepared graphene oxides contain nitro and amine groups. Thermal reduction is needed for substitutional N-doping. Nitrogen and oxygen surface concentrations vary between 0.23-0.96% and 3-8%, respectively. Exfoliation in (NH4)2SO4 and/or 5 mM HNO3 favors the formation of pyridinic-N (10-40% of the total N), whereas 1 M HNO3 favors the formation of graphitic-N (≈60%). The electrical conductivity ranges between 166-2705 Scm-1. Raman spectroscopy revealed a low density of defects (ID/IG ratio between 0.1 and 0.7) and that most samples are composed of mono-to-bilayer graphene-based materials (IG/I2D integrated intensities ratio). Structural and compositional stability of selected samples after storage in air for three months is demonstrated. These results confirm the high quality of the synthesized undoped and N-doped graphene-type materials.

A review of carbon nanomaterials/bacterial cellulose composites for nanomedicine applications

Carbon nanomaterials (CNMs) mainly include fullerene, carbon nanotubes, graphene, carbon quantum dots, nanodiamonds, and their derivatives. As a new type of material in the field of nanomaterials, it has outstanding physical and chemical properties, such as minor size effects, substantial specific surface area, extremely high reaction activity, biocompatibility, and chemical stability, which have attracted widespread attention in the medical community in the past decade. However, the single use of carbon nanomaterials has problems such as self-aggregation and poor water solubility. Researchers have recently combined them with bacterial cellulose to form a new intelligent composite material to improve the defects of carbon nanomaterials. This composite material has been widely synthesized and used in targeted drug delivery, biosensors, antibacterial dressings, tissue engineering scaffolds, and other nanomedicine fields. This paper mainly reviews the research progress of carbon nanomaterials based on bacterial cellulose in nanomedicine. In addition, the potential cytotoxicity of these composite materials and their components in vitro and in vivo was discussed, as well as the challenges and gaps that need to be addressed in future clinical applications.

Longevous Cycling of Rechargeable Zn-Air Battery Enabled by "Raisin-Bread" Cobalt Oxynitride/Porous Carbon Hybrid Electrocatalysts

Developing commercially viable electrocatalyst lies at the research hotspot of rechargeable Zn-air batteries, but it is still challenging to meet the requirements of energy efficiency and durability in realistic applications. Strategic material design is critical to addressing its drawbacks in terms of sluggish kinetics of oxygen reactions and limited battery lifespan. Herein, a "raisin-bread" architecture is designed for a hybrid catalyst constituting cobalt nitride as the core nanoparticle with thin oxidized coverings, which is further deposited within porous carbon aerogel. Based on synchrotron-based characterizations, this hybrid provides oxygen vacancies and Co-Nx -C sites as the active sites, resulting from a strong coupling between CoOx Ny nanoparticles and 3D conductive carbon scaffolds. Compared to the oxide reference, it performs enhanced stability in harsh electrocatalytic environments, highlighting the benefits of the oxynitride. Furthermore, the 3D conductive scaffolds improve charge/mass transportation and boost durability of these active sites. Density functional theory calculations reveal that the introduced N species into hybrid can synergistically tune the d-band center of cobalt and improve its bifunctional activity. As a result, the obtained air cathode exhibits bifunctional overpotential of 0.65 V and a battery lifetime exceeding 1350 h, which sets a new record for rechargeable Zn-air battery reported so far.

Ratiometric antifouling electrochemical biosensors based on designed Y-shaped peptide and MXene loaded with Au@ZIF-67 and methylene blue

Based on the designed inverted Y-shaped peptide and MXene nanocomposite (MXene-Au@ZIF-67), a ratiometric anti-pollution electrochemical biosensor was designed and applied to the detection of biomarkers in serum. Au@ZIF-67 inserted into the interior of MXene can not only prevent the accumulation of MXene but also provide a large amounts of binding sites for capturing biomolecules. A designed multifunctional Y-shaped peptide containing anchoring, antifouling, and recognition sequences was anchored onto MXene-Au@ZIF-67 through Au-S bonds. Electrochemical signal molecules, ferrocenecarboxylic acid (Fc) and methylene blue (MB), were modified to another end of multifunctional peptide and interior of MXene-Au@ZIF-67, respectively, to produce a ratiometric electrochemical signal. We selected prostate specific antigen (PSA) as the model compound. PSA specifically recognizes and cleaves the recognition segment in the Y-shaped peptide, and the signal of Fc is reduced, while the signal of MB remains unchanged. The ratiometric strategy endows the present biosensor high accuracy and sensitivity with a detection limit of 0.85 pg/mL. In addition, the sensing surface has good antifouling ability due to the antifouling sequence of the two branching parts of the Y-shaped peptide. More importantly, by replacing the recognition segment of peptides also other targets are accessible, indicating the potential application of the universal detection strategy to the detection of various biomarkers in clinical diagnosis.

Advances in the synthesis of heteroatom-doped graphene-based materials and their application in sensors, adsorbents and catalysis

In recent years, as a new type of carbon material, graphene has attracted much attention owing to its high conductivity, large specific surface area and excellent chemical stability. After introducing heteroatoms into graphene, the physical, chemical and biological properties of doped graphene are significantly enhanced. This review focuses on synthesis methods for N, B, P and S co-doped graphene and graphene-based composites and comprehensively discusses their recent applications in the fields of sensors, adsorbents and catalysis. The challenges and application prospects of heteroatom doped graphene materials are also proposed. This study provides a reference and guidance for the development and application of new doped graphene materials.

Activation of peroxymonosulfate by biochar-supported Fe3O4 derived from oily sludge to enhance the oxidative degradation of tetracycline hydrochloride

Carbon materials used for catalysis in advanced oxidation processes tend to be obtained from cheap and readily available raw materials. We constructed a carbon material, OSC@Fe3O4, by loading Fe3O4 onto the pyrolyzed hazardous waste oily sludge. OSC@Fe3O4 was then used to activate peroxymonosulfate (PMS) for the removal of tetracycline hydrochloride (TTCH) from water. At 298 K, 0.2 g⋅L-1 of catalyst and 0.3 g⋅L-1 of PMS, the reaction rate constant of the OSC@I-2/PMS system reached 0.079 min-1, with a TTCH removal efficiency of 92.6%. The degradation efficiency of TTCH remained at 81% after five cycles. The specific surface area and pore volume of OSC@I-2 were 263.9 m2⋅g-1 and 0.42 cm3⋅g-1, respectively, which improved the porous structure of the carbon material and provided more active points, thus improving the catalytic performance. N and S were doped into the oily sludge carbon due to the presence of N- and S-containing compounds in the raw oily sludge. N and S doping led to more electron-rich sites with higher negative charges in OSC@I-2 and gave the oily sludge carbon a higher affinity to PMS, thereby promoting its ability to activate PMS. Sulfate radicals (SO4•‾) played a dominant role in the degradation of TTCH, with demethylation and the breaking of double bonds being a possible degradation pathway. A biotoxicity test showed that the microbial toxicity of the degradation intermediates was significantly reduced. This work provides a strategy for the application of PMS-based catalysts derived from waste carbon resources.

Graphene nanocomposites for real-time electrochemical sensing of nitric oxide in biological systems

Nitric oxide (NO) signaling plays many pivotal roles impacting almost every organ function in mammalian physiology, most notably in cardiovascular homeostasis, inflammation, and neurological regulation. Consequently, the ability to make real-time and continuous measurements of NO is a prerequisite research tool to understand fundamental biology in health and disease. Despite considerable success in the electrochemical sensing of NO, challenges remain to optimize rapid and highly sensitive detection, without interference from other species, in both cultured cells and in vivo. Achieving these goals depends on the choice of electrode material and the electrode surface modification, with graphene nanostructures recently reported to enhance the electrocatalytic detection of NO. Due to its single-atom thickness, high specific surface area, and highest electron mobility, graphene holds promise for electrochemical sensing of NO with unprecedented sensitivity and specificity even at sub-nanomolar concentrations. The non-covalent functionalization of graphene through supermolecular interactions, including π-π stacking and electrostatic interaction, facilitates the successful immobilization of other high electrolytic materials and heme biomolecules on graphene while maintaining the structural integrity and morphology of graphene sheets. Such nanocomposites have been optimized for the highly sensitive and specific detection of NO under physiologically relevant conditions. In this review, we examine the building blocks of these graphene-based electrochemical sensors, including the conjugation of different electrolytic materials and biomolecules on graphene, and sensing mechanisms, by reflecting on the recent developments in materials and engineering for real-time detection of NO in biological systems.

Defect and Donor Manipulated Highly Efficient Electron-Hole Separation in a 3D Nanoporous Schottky Heterojunction

Given the rapid recombination of photogenerated charge carriers and photocorrosion, transition metal sulfide photocatalysts usually suffer from modest photocatalytic performance. Herein, S-vacancy-rich ZnIn2S4 (VS-ZIS) nanosheets are integrated on 3D bicontinuous nitrogen-doped nanoporous graphene (N-npG), forming 3D heterostructures with well-fitted geometric configuration (VS-ZIS/N-npG) for highly efficient photocatalytic hydrogen production. The VS-ZIS/N-npG presents ultrafast interfacial photogenerated electrons captured by the S vacancies in VS-ZIS and holes neutralization behaviors by the extra free electrons in N-npG during photocatalysis, which are demonstrated by in situ XPS, femtosecond transient absorption (fs-TA) spectroscopy, and transient-state surface photovoltage (TS-SPV) spectra. The simulated interfacial charge rearrangement behaviors from DFT calculations also verify the separation tendency of photogenerated charge carriers. Thus, the optimized VS-ZIS/N-npG 3D hierarchical heterojunction with 1.0 wt % N-npG exhibits a comparably high hydrogen generation rate of 4222.4 μmol g-1 h-1, which is 5.6-fold higher than the bare VS-ZIS and 12.7-fold higher than the ZIS without S vacancies. This work sheds light on the rational design of photogenerated carrier transfer paths to facilitate charge separation and provides further hints for the design of hierarchical heterostructure photocatalysts.

Graphdiyne and Nitrogen-Doped Graphdiyne Nanotubes as Highly Efficient Electrocatalysts for Oxygen Reduction Reaction

Electrocatalysts with high efficiency and low cost are always urgently needed for oxygen reduction reaction (ORR). As a new carbon allotrope, graphdiyne (GDY) has received much attention due to its unique chemical structure containing sp- and sp2-hybridized carbons, and intrinsic electrochemical activity ascribed to its inherent conductivity. Herein, we prepared two graphdiyne materials named GDY nanotube and nitrogen-doped GDY (NGDY) nanotube via cross-coupling reactions on the surface of Cu nanowires. As metal-free catalysts, their electrocatalytic activities for ORR were demonstrated. The results showed that the NGDY nanotube presents more excellent electrochemical performance than that of the GDY nanotube, including more positive potential and faster kinetics and charge transfer process. The improvement can be ascribed to the greater number of structural electrocatalytic active sites from nitrogen atoms as well as the hollow nanotube morphology, which is beneficial to the adsorption of oxygen and acceleration of the catalytic reaction. This work helps develop high-quality graphdiyne-based electrocatalysts with well-defined chemical structures and morphologies for various electrochemical reactions.

Ultrasensitive Ratiometric Electrochemiluminescence Sensor with an Efficient Antifouling and Antibacterial Interface of PSBMA@SiO2-MXene for Oxytetracycline Trace Detection in the Marine Environment

The sensitivity and accuracy of electrochemiluminescence (ECL) sensors for detecting small-molecule pollutants in environmental water are affected not only by nonspecific adsorption of proteins and other molecules but also by bacterial interference. Therefore, there is an urgent need to develop an ECL sensor with antifouling and antibacterial functions for water environment monitoring. Herein, a highly efficient antifouling sensing interface (PSBMA@SiO2-MXene) based on zwitterionic sulfobetaine methacrylate (SBMA) antifouling nanospheres (NPs) and two-dimensional MXene nanosheets was designed for the sensitive detection of oxytetracycline (OTC), an antibiotic small-molecule pollutant. Specifically, SBMA with good hydrophilicity and electrical neutrality was connected to SiO2 NPs, thus effectively reducing protein and bacterial adsorption and improving stability. Second, MXene with a high specific surface area was selected as the carrier to load more antifouling NPs, which greatly improves the antifouling performance. Meanwhile, the introduction of MXene also enhances the conductivity of the antifouling interface. In addition, a ratio-based sensing strategy was designed to further improve the detection accuracy and sensitivity of the sensor by utilizing Au@luminol as an internal standard factor. Based on antifouling and antibacterial interfaces, as well as internal standard and ratiometric sensing strategies, the detection range of the proposed sensor was 0.1 ng/mL to 100 μg/mL, with a detection limit of 0.023 ng/mL, achieving trace dynamic monitoring of antibiotics in complex aqueous media.

Immobilizing ultrasmall Pt nanocrystals on 3D interweaving BCN nanosheet-graphene networks enables efficient methanol oxidation reaction

Currently, the state-of-the-art anode catalysts employed in direct methanol fuel cells (DMFCs) consist of nanosize Pt dispersed on a carbonaceous support; however, the relatively weak Pt-carbon interfacial interactions severely affect their overall electrocatalytic activity and service life. Herein, we demonstrate a convenient and robust stereo-assembly strategy for the efficient immobilization of ultrasmall Pt nanocrystals on 3D interweaving porous B-doped g-C3N4 nanosheet-graphene networks (Pt/BCN-G) by combining thermal annealing and solvothermal processes. This delicate configuration endowed the resulting hybrid nanoarchitecture with unusual textural merits, including 3D crosslinked porous skeletons, well-separated ultrathin nanosheets, rich B and N species, homogeneous Pt dispersion, stable heterointerface, and high electrical conductivity. Consequently, the 3D Pt/BCN-G nanoarchitecture with an optimized composition exhibited a large electrochemically active surface area of up to 121.2 m2 g-1, high mass activity of 1782.2 mA mg-1, superior poison tolerance, and excellent cycling stability towards the electrooxidation of methanol, all of which exceeded that of the reference Pt/graphene, Pt/BCN, Pt/carbon nanotube, Pt/carbon black, and Pt/g-C3N4 catalysts.

Sonoelectrochemical nitrided graphene nanosheets with vacancies and their applications for catalysis and sensing of uric acid oxidation

A sonoelectrochemical method for preparing N-doped defective graphene nanosheets (N/O-dGNs) with point defects and 5-9 or 5-8-5 vacancies and oxygen-containing groups was successfully demonstrated. In this one-pot approach, the N-bonding configuration and N content of N/O-dGNs were finely tuned by the ultrasonic power (192, 320, and 640 W). The N content in atomic percentage (at%) for N/O-dGN (N/O-dGN320W) with point defects and 5-8-5 vacancy prepared at 320 W power was 5.6 at%, greater than 3.0 at% and 2.6 at% for N/O-dGN with point defects and 5-9 vacancies at 192 W and 640 W power (N/O-dGN192W and N/O-dGN640W), respectively. N-bonding sites on N/O-dGN320W were dominantly amine N (2.1 at%) and pyrrolic N (2.4 at%). Additionally, the electrocatalytic activity of N/O-dGN192W, N/O-dGN320W, and N/O-dGN640W was successfully demonstrated for the sequential uric acid (UA) oxidation reaction (UOR), in which N/O-dGN320W displayed a significant mass activity (2.51 A/g). As in the transient catalysis of UOR, N/O-dGN320W with amine N showed 400.8 μA mM-1 cm-2 in sensitivity within a wide linear analysis range (1.5 × 10-2-6 mM) for amperometrically sensing UA. The results of real sample experiments using serum samples further demonstrated the potential of N/O-dGN320W as a non-enzymatic UA sensor.

Catalyst Development for High-Temperature Polymer Electrolyte Membrane Fuel Cell (HT-PEMFC) Applications

A constant increase in global emission standard is causing fuel cell (FC) technology to gain importance. Over the last two decades, a great deal of research has been focused on developing more active catalysts to boost the performance of high-temperature polymer electrolyte membrane fuel cells (HT-PEMFC), as well as their durability. Due to material degradation at high-temperature conditions, catalyst design becomes challenging. Two main approaches are suggested: (i) alloying platinum (Pt) with low-cost transition metals to reduce Pt usage, and (ii) developing novel catalyst support that anchor metal particles more efficiently while inhibiting corrosion phenomena. In this comprehensive review, the most recent platinum group metal (PGM) and platinum group metal free (PGM-free) catalyst development is detailed, as well as the development of alternative carbon (C) supports for HT-PEMFCs.

Quantum Transport in Large-Scale Patterned Nitrogen-Doped Graphene

It has recently been demonstrated how the nitrogen dopant concentration in graphene can be controlled spatially on the nano-meter scale using a molecular mask. This technique may be used to create ballistic electron optics-like structures of high/low doping regions; for example, to focus electron beams, harnessing the quantum wave nature of the electronic propagation. Here, we employ large-scale Greens function transport calculations based on a tight-binding approach. We first benchmark different tight-binding models of nitrogen in graphene with parameters based on density functional theory (DFT) and the virtual crystal approximation (VCA). Then, we study theoretically how the random distribution within the masked regions and the discreteness of the nitrogen scattering centers impact the transport behavior of sharp n-p and n-n' interfaces formed by different, realistic nitrogen concentrations. We investigate how constrictions for the current can be realized by patterned high/low doping regions with experimentally feasible nitrogen concentrations. The constrictions can guide the electronic current, while the quantized conductance is significantly washed out due to the nitrogen scattering. The implications for device design is that a p-n junction with nitrogen corrugation should still be viable for current focusing. Furthermore, a guiding channel with less nitrogen in the conducting canal preserves more features of quantized conductance and, therefore, its low-noise regime.

Favoring the Selective H2O2 Generation of a Self-Antibiofouling Dissolved Oxygen Sensor for Real-Time Online Monitoring via Surface-Engineered N-Doped Reduced Graphene Oxide

Dissolved oxygen (DO) is a key parameter in assessing water quality, particularly in aquatic ecosystems. The oxygen reduction reaction (ORR) has notable prevalence in energy conversion and biological processes, including biosensing. Nevertheless, the long-term usage of the submersible DO sensors leads to undesirable biofilm formation on the electrode surface, deteriorating their sensitivity and stability. Recently, the reactive oxygen species (ROS), such as the two-electron pathway ORR byproduct, H2O2, had been known for its biofilm-degradation activity. Herein, for the first time, we reported N-doped reduced graphene oxide (N-rGO) for H2O2 selectivity as the self-antibiofouling DO sensor. Introducing foreign atom doping could reorient the electron network of graphene by the electronegativity gap, which facilitated highly selective and efficient two electron pathway of ORR. Mitigating the N content of N-rGO had enhanced the H2O2 selectivity (57.5%) and electron transfer number (n = 2.84) in neutral medium. Moreover, the N-rGO could be integrated to a wireless DO monitoring device that might realize an applicable device in the aquatic fish farming.
