Abstract
Due to its widespread applications in various fields, antibiotics are continuously released into the environment and ultimately enter the human body through diverse routes. Meanwhile, the unreasonable use of antibiotics can also lead to a series of adverse outcomes. Pregnant women and developing fetuses are more susceptible to the influence of external chemicals than adults. The evaluation of antibiotic exposure levels through questionnaire surveys or prescriptions in medical records and biomonitoring-based data shows that antibiotics are frequently prescribed and used by pregnant women around the world. Antibiotics may be transmitted from mothers to their offspring through different pathways, which then adversely affect the health of offspring. However, there has been no comprehensive review on antibiotic exposure and mother-to-child transmission in pregnant women so far. Herein, we summarized the exposure levels of antibiotics in pregnant women and fetuses, the exposure routes of antibiotics to pregnant women, and related influencing factors. In addition, we scrutinized the potential mechanisms and factors influencing the transfer of antibiotics from mother to fetus through placental transmission, and explored the adverse effects of maternal antibiotic exposure on fetal growth and development, neonatal gut microbiota, and subsequent childhood health. Given the widespread use of antibiotics and the health threats posed by their exposure, it is necessary to comprehensively track antibiotics in pregnant women and fetuses in the future, and more in-depth biological studies are needed to reveal and verify the mechanisms of mother-to-child transmission, which is crucial for accurately quantifying and evaluating fetal health status.

Abstract
The widespread use of antimicrobials causes antibiotic resistance in bacteria. The use of butyric acid and its derivatives is an alternative tactic. This review summarizes the literature on the role of butyric acid in the body and provides further prospects for the clinical use of its derivatives and delivery methods to the animal body. Thus far, there is evidence confirming the vital role of butyric acid in the body and the effectiveness of its derivatives when used as animal medicines and growth stimulants. Butyric acid salts stimulate immunomodulatory activity by reducing microbial colonization of the intestine and suppressing inflammation. Extraintestinal effects occur against the background of hemoglobinopathy, hypercholesterolemia, insulin resistance, and cerebral ischemia. Butyric acid derivatives inhibit histone deacetylase. Aberrant histone deacetylase activity is associated with the development of certain types of cancer in humans. Feed additives containing butyric acid salts or tributyrin are used widely in animal husbandry. They improve the functional status of the intestine and accelerate animal growth and development. On the other hand, high concentrations of butyric acid stimulate the apoptosis of epithelial cells and disrupt the intestinal barrier function. This review highlights the biological activity and the mechanism of action of butyric acid, its salts, and esters, revealing their role in the treatment of various animal and human diseases. This paper also discussed the possibility of using butyric acid and its derivatives as surface modifiers of enterosorbents to obtain new drugs with bifunctional action.

Abstract
The spread of antibiotic-resistant bacteria is a global problem that should be addressed through the perspective of the "one health" concept. The purpose of this study was to determine the contamination rate of antibiotic-resistant Aeromonas spp. in fresh water river fish purchased from a fish market in Vietnam. We then defined the pattern of antibiotic resistance to assess antibiotic-resistant contamination. Antibiotic-resistant Aeromonas spp. were detected in the intestinal contents of 32 of 80 fish. blaNDM-1 was detected in seven strains. Extended-spectrum β-lactamase and AmpC β-lactamase-related genes were detected in 28 strains, including blaCTX-M-55, blaCTX-M-15, blaCTX-M-1, and blaDHA,blaFOX, and blaMOX. The blaNDM-1 detected in the seven Aeromonas spp. strains were found chromosomally. This finding suggests that the blaNDM gene is stable in the natural environment and may spread widely into animals and humans via Aeromonas spp. with a transposon. Our results suggest the importance of continuing to monitor carbapenemase genes in Aeromonas spp. to evaluate the possibility that they may spread in other Enterobacterales, and to elucidate the mechanism of spread.

Abstract
Antibiotic use in livestock production is one of the drivers of antibiotic resistance and a shift towards better and reduced antibiotic usage is urgently required. In Vietnam, where there are frequent reports of the misuse and overuse of antibiotics, little attention has been paid to farmers who have successfully changed their practices. This qualitative study aims to understand the transition process of Vietnamese chicken farmers toward reduced antibiotic usage. We conducted semi-structured interviews with 18 chicken farmers, 13 drug sellers, and 5 traders using participatory tools and a socio-anthropological approach. We explored the farmers' histories, current and past antibiotic usage, methods used to reduce antibiotic use, and motivations and barriers to changing practices. Through the thematic analysis of the farmers' transcripts, we identified technical, economic, and social factors that influence change. Out of eighteen farmers, we identified ten farmers who had already reduced antibiotic usage. The main motivations included producing quality chickens (tasty and safe) while reducing farm expenditures. Barriers were related to poor biosecurity in the area, market failures, and the farmers' lack of knowledge. Innovation led to overcome these obstacles included the local development of handmade probiotics and the organization of farmer cooperatives to overcome economic difficulties and guarantee product outlets. Knowledge was increased by workshops organized at the communal level and the influence of competent veterinarians in the area. We showed that the transition process was influenced by several components of the system rather than by any individual alone. Our study demonstrated that local initiatives to reduce antibiotic use in Vietnamese chicken production do exist. As changes depend on the system in which stakeholders are embedded, systemic lock-ins must be removed to allow practices to change. The promotion of locally-developed solutions should be further encouraged.

Abstract
Veterinary drug residues present in foods can pose severe health threats to the population. The present study aims to develop a high-resolution mass spectral library of 158 veterinary drugs of 16 different classes for their rapid identification in food samples through liquid chromatography-high-resolution electrospray ionization-tandem mass spectrometry (LC-HR-ESI-MS/MS). Standard drugs were pooled according to their log P values and exact masses before analysis. Spectra were collected at system automated collision energy, i.e., of 25-60 eV and four predetermined collision energies (10, 20, 30, and 40 eV) for each compound using a schedule precursor list of [M + H]+, [M + Na]+, and [M + NH4]+ ions. The utility of the developed database was checked by analyzing food samples. A total of 17 veterinary drugs based on the reference standard retention times (RTs), HR-MS spectra, and MS/MS spectra were identified in the analyzed samples. Moreover, five veterinary drugs were selected for quantitative analysis, including doxycycline hyclate, lincomycin, sulfasalazine, moxifloxacin, and diphenoxylate, using liquid chromatography-ion trap mass-spectrometry (LC-IT-MS). Concentrations of the drug were obtained to vary from 0.0805 to 0.9731 mg/kg in food samples and were found to be exceeded in most of the cases as per the maximum residue levels described by Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO)/World Health Organization (WHO). The MS data were submitted to the MetaboLights online database (MTBLS2914). This study will help in the high-throughput screening of multiclass veterinary drugs in foodstuffs.

Abstract
Despite limited biomonitoring studies suggesting extensive antibiotic exposure in general population, the body burden of antibiotics in young children and their potential health risks remain unclear. To assess the antibiotic exposure levels in young children, 508 preschoolers aged 3-6 years were recruited from eastern China in 2022, and a total of 50 representative antibiotics from 8 categories, including 17 human antibiotics (HAs), 4 antibiotics preferred as HAs (PHAs), 16 veterinary antibiotics (VAs), and 13 antibiotics preferred as VAs (PVAs), were analyzed by UPLC-MS/MS. Hazard quotient (HQ) and hazard index (HI) were calculated to evaluate the health risks, and multivariate logistic regression was applied to examine diet with antibiotic exposure. Our results showed that there were 41 antibiotics detected in children's urine, and the overall detection frequency was as high as 100%. Sulfonamides, macrolides, β-lactams, quinolones, and azoles were the predominant categories of antibiotic detected. Among the studied children, 6.5% had a sum of estimated daily intake (EDI) of all VAs and PVAs larger than 1 μg/kg/day. Notably, 10.0% of the children had a microbiological HI value exceeding 1, primarily contributed by ciprofloxacin. Children with higher consumption of seafood had a relatively increased exposure to multiple categories of antibiotics, including HAs, VAs, quinolones, azoles, and others. Principal component analysis suggested that "Aquatic products and viscera preferred dietary pattern" scores were positively correlated with the exposure levels of ciprofloxacin (OR: 1.23; 95% CI: 1.02-1.47) and carbadox (OR: 1.32; 95% CI: 1.10-1.59), and a relatively increased exposure of PHAs was realized in children with higher "Meat-egg preferred dietary pattern" scores (OR: 1.24; 95% CI: 1.03-1.50). In conclusion, there was a widespread exposure to antibiotics among preschool children from eastern China, and children who consumed more animal-derived foods may had an increased exposure to antibiotics.

Abstract
The occurrence of antibiotics in the feces of elderly individuals in Shenzhen, China, was investigated by monitoring 78 compounds to understand the adverse effects and its association with antibiotic residues in animal products collected from local markets. In total, 18 compounds belonging to 5 classes of antibiotics were identified in 74 of 140 fecal samples. Furthermore, 17.9% of the fecal samples contained at least two antibiotics, and 14.3% of the samples showed antibiotic concentrations higher than 100 μg/kg. Cephalothin exhibited the highest detection frequency (22.1%), followed by azithromycin (15.7%) and tilmicosin (12.9%). Oxytetracycline, norfloxacin, and azithromycin showed extremely high concentrations (> 1000 μg/kg). Eight antibiotics were detected in the animal products, with detection frequencies ranging from 4.8 to 40.0%. Five antibiotics exhibited similar detection frequencies and strong correlations between the human fecal and animal product samples. Health risk assessment based on hazard quotients showed that ciprofloxacin in animal products and human feces posed a medium and high risk, respectively. The hazard quotients of oxytetracycline, norfloxacin, and azithromycin in the feces were greater than 1, indicating a high health risk. These findings suggest that the elderly individuals were frequently exposed to antibiotics via the food chain and faced health risks posed by these antibiotics.

Abstract
Antibiotics, especially fluoroquinolones, have been exhaustively used in animal husbandry. However, very limited information on the occurrence and exposure assessment of fluoroquinolone residues in chicken and pork in China is available to date. Thus, a total of 1754 chicken samples and 1712 pork samples were collected from 25 provinces in China and tested by ultra-high performance liquid chromatography-tandem mass spectrometry (UPLC-MS/MS) for residual determination of six common fluoroquinolones. The results revealed that the detection frequencies of fluoroquinolone residues were 3.99% and 1.69% in chicken and pork samples. The overall violation frequencies were 0.68% and 0.41% for chicken and pork. Enrofloxacin and its metabolite ciprofloxacin were found to be the most predominant fluoroquinolones. The occurrence of these antibiotics in different sampling regions and market types was analyzed. The %ADI values of enrofloxacin and ciprofloxacin were far less than 100, indicating the health risk associated with the exposure to these aforementioned fluoroquinolone residues via chicken and pork for Chinese children, adolescents, and adults was acceptable. The results provided useful references for Chinese consumers, and helped to appropriately use these antibiotics in poultry and livestock industry.

Abstract
Excessive antibiotic use in veterinary applications has resulted in water contamination and potentially poses a serious threat to aquatic environments and human health. The objective of the current study was to quantify carbonized leonardite (cLND) adsorption capabilities to remove sulfamethoxazole (SMX)- and enrofloxacin (ENR)-contaminated water and to determine the microbial activity of ENR residuals on cLND following adsorption. The cLND samples prepared at 450 °C and 850 °C (cLND450 and cLND550, respectively) were evaluated for structural and physical characteristics and adsorption capabilities based on adsorption kinetics and isotherm studies. The low pyrolysis temperature of cLND resulted in a heterogeneous surface that was abundant in both hydrophobic and hydrophilic functional groups. SMX and ENR adsorption were best described using a pseudo-second-order rate expression. The SMX and ENR adsorption equilibrium data on cLND450 and cLND550 revealed their better compliance with a Langmuir isotherm than with four other models based on 2.3-fold higher values of qmENR than qmSMX. Under the presence of the environmental interference, the electrostatic interaction was the main contributing factor to the adsorption capability. Microbial activity experiments based on the growth of Staphylococcus aureus ATCC 25923 revealed that cLND could successfully adsorb and subsequently retain the adsorbed antibiotic on the cLND surface. This study demonstrated the potential of cLND550 as a suitable low-cost adsorbent for the highly efficient removal of antibiotics from water.

Abstract
Growing evidence has indicated the association of clinical antibiotic use with abnormal blood lipid levels; however, no epidemiological study has examined the relationship of antibiotic exposure, probably derived from food chains, with blood lipid levels. This study investigated the relationships of urinary antibiotic levels with blood lipid levels and dyslipidemias in the older population. Baseline data of 960 participants from the Cohort of Elderly Health and Environment Controllable Factors were used in the present study. High-performance liquid chromatography-tandem mass spectrometry (HPLC-MS/MS) was performed to detect antibiotic residues in the urine samples of the participants. Our findings revealed that each 1 μg/g increase in enrofloxacin and ciprofloxacin levels was associated with an increase of 0.084 (95 % confidence interval (CI): 0.030, 0.139) and 0.049 (95 % CI: 0.012, 0.086) in triglyceride levels, respectively. Enrofloxacin was associated with an increased risk of hypertriglyceridemia. Each 1 μg/g increase in the enrofloxacin level corresponded to an increase of 0.052 (95 % CI: 0.006, 0.098) in the low-density lipoprotein cholesterol level. Furthermore, florfenicol exposure increased the risks of both hyperbetalipoproteinemia and hypoalphalipoproteinemia. By contrast, each 1 μg/g increase in sulfaclozine and doxycycline levels was associated with a - 0.062 (95 % CI: -0.111, -0.020), and - 0.083 (95 % CI: -0.160, -0.007) decrease in total cholesterol levels, respectively. Sulfaclozine was closely related to a decreased risk of hypercholesterolemia. Stratification analysis revealed specific differences in the correlation between antibiotic exposure and lipid levels based on the waist circumference (WC) values of the participants. Except for sulfaclozine and doxycycline, other antibiotics exerted adverse effects on lipid levels and increased dyslipidemia prevalence. The older participants with higher WC values were vulnerable to antibiotic exposure. Therefore, an appropriate understanding of the epidemiological attributes of antibiotic residues is indispensable to prevent abdominal obesity in the older population.

Abstract
The extensive use of antibiotics in livestock farming poses increased concerns for human health as residues of these substances are present in edible tissues. The aim of this study was the determination of the levels of four groups of antibiotics (sulfonamides-SAs, tetracyclines-TCs, streptomycines-STr and quinolones-QNLs) in meat samples (muscles, livers and kidneys from beef, chicken and pork) and the estimation of the dietary exposure to antibiotics from meat consumption and the potential hazard for human health. Fifty-four samples of raw meat were randomly collected in 2018 from the Cretan market, Greece and analyzed both with an enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay (ELISA) and liquid chromatography-mass spectrometry (LC-MS). According to the results derived from the ELISA method, only 2% of the meat samples were free from antibiotics, 2% were detected with 4 antibiotics and the great majority of the samples (87%) were detected with 2 to 3 antibiotics. SAs presented the highest detection frequencies for all samples whereas TCs were not detected in any bovine sample. The highest median concentration was detected for STr in bovine muscles (182.10 μg/kg) followed by QNLs (93.36 μg/kg) in pork kidneys whereas the chicken samples had higher burdens of QNLs compared to the other meat samples. LC-MS analysis showed that oxytetracycline (OTC) was the most common antibiotic in all samples. The highest median concentration of all antibiotics was detected for doxycycline (DOX) (181.73 μg/kg in pork kidney) followed by OTC in bovine liver (74.46 μg/kg). Risk characterization was applied for each of the two methods; The hazard quotients (HQ) did not exceed 0.059 for the ELISA method and 0.113 for the LC-MS method for any group of antibiotics, whereas the total hazard indexes (HI) were 0.078 and 0.021, respectively. The results showed the presence of different groups of antibiotics in meat from the Cretan market and that the health risk to antibiotics is low. A risk assessment analysis conducted for meat consumption and corrected for the aggregated exposure revealed no risk for the consumers.

Abstract
Studies examined the connection between antibiotic exposure in urine and dysglycemia risk (including prediabetes and diabetes) in the elderly were limited. Multiple linear regression, binary logistic regression, restricted cubic splines (RCS), and stratified analysis were applied to analyze the relationship between antibiotic exposure and dysglycemia risk. We observed that sulfaclozine exposure 0.07 (95% confidence interval [CI]: 0.01-0.23) significantly increased fasting blood glucose (FBG) level. By mechanism, usage, and antimicrobial action, sulfonamides 0.08 (95% CI: 0.06-0.36), veterinary antibiotics (VA) 0.07 (95% CI: 0.01-0.30), or bacteriostatic antibiotics 0.07 (95% CI: 0.02-0.29) significantly increased FBG level. Additionally, sulfaclozine exposure 1.54 (95% CI: 1.02-2.33) resulted in a higher dysglycemia risk, while doxycycline exposure 0.53 (95% CI: 0.30-0.95) resulted in a lower dysglycemia risk. By mechanism, usage, and antimicrobial action, sulfonamides 1.44 (95% CI: 1.02-2.04), VA 1.68 (95% CI: 1.21-2.35), or bacteriostatic antibiotics 1.40 (95% CI: 1.02-1.93) exposure had a higher dysglycemia risk. Taken together, exposure to sulfonamides, VA, especially sulfaclozine, was correlated with a higher dysglycemia risk in the elderly. Exposure to bacteriostatic antibiotics was associated with a higher dysglycemia risk in the female.

Abstract
Antibiotics play a role in preventing and treating infectious diseases and also contribute to other health risks for humans. With the overuse of antibiotics, they are widely distributed in the environment. Long-term exposure to multiple antibiotics may occur in humans through medication and dietary intake. Therefore, it is critical to estimate daily intake and health risk of antibiotics based on urinary biomonitoring. This review compares the strengths and weaknesses of current analytical methods to determine antibiotics in urine samples, discusses the urinary concentration profiles and hazard quotients of individual antibiotics, and overviews correlations of antibiotic exposure with the risk of diseases. Liquid chromatography-tandem mass spectrometry is most applied to simultaneously determine multiple types of antibiotics at trace levels. Solid-phase extraction with a hydrophilic-lipophilic balance adsorbent is commonly used to extract antibiotics in urine samples. Fifteen major antibiotics with relatively higher detection frequencies and concentrations include sulfaclozine, trimethoprim, erythromycin, azithromycin, penicillin V, amoxicillin, oxytetracycline, chlortetracycline, tetracycline, doxycycline, ofloxacin, enrofloxacin, ciprofloxacin, norfloxacin, and florfenicol. Humans can be easily at microbiological effect-based risk induced by florfenicol, ciprofloxacin, azithromycin, and amoxicillin. Positive associations were observed between specific antibiotic exposure and obesity, allergic diseases, and mental disorders. Overall, the accessible, automated, and environmentally friendly methods are prospected for simultaneous determinations of antibiotics at trace level in urine. To estimate human exposure to antibiotics more accurately, knowledge gaps need to be filled up, including the transformation between parent and metabolic antibiotics, urinary excretion proportions of antibiotics at low-dose exposure and pharmacokinetic data of antibiotics in humans, and the repeated sampling over a long period in future research is needed. Longitudinal studies about antibiotic exposure and the risk of diseases in different developmental windows as well as in-depth research on the pathogenic mechanism of long-term, low-dose, and joint antibiotic exposure are warranted.

Abstract
BACKGROUND The widespread use of antibiotics has left extensive residues in the environment and food. Antibiotics can accumulate in human body. As the potential health risks of antibiotic exposure in children are of a great concern in recent years, our study aimed to describe the status of antibiotic exposure in primary school students in Shanghai, China, and to explore the relationships of dietary patterns with internal antibiotic levels. METHODS The Shanghai Children's Health, Education, and Lifestyle Evaluation (SCHEDULE) Survey was a cross-sectional study with a staged, cluster random sample of all primary school students in Shanghai, China. In the present study, we randomly selected 2199 children aged 6-12 years old. A total of 10 antibiotics in urine samples were measured by liquid chromatography-tandem mass spectrometry. Multivariable survey logistic regression models were used to investigate dietary patterns associated with detection rates of antibiotics. RESULTS The detection rates of individual antibiotics ranged from 4.3% to 30.7%. 68.7% of children were exposed to at least one antibiotic. There was a significant difference in child exposure to overall antibiotics by residential locations (60.9% in urban vs. 71.1% in suburban areas). Principal component analyses suggested that higher unhealthy dietary pattern scores were significantly associated with increased detection rates of tetracyclines [1.27 (95% CI: 1.18, 1.38)] and sulfonamides [1.20 (95% CI: 1.05, 1.36)]. In addition, 9.05% of children had a hazard index (HI) value greater than 1, which was mainly contributed by ciprofloxacin. CONCLUSIONS School-age children were widely exposed to antibiotics in Shanghai. Unhealthy diet was associated with a higher level of antibiotic exposure.

Abstract
Veterinary medicine uses antibiotics randomly for treatment and growth promotion. Milk of dairy animals contains substantial quantities of antibiotics that have harmful effects on health. It is therefore necessary to test commercially available milk using immunological, chromatographic, or microbiological methods to confirm the absence of antibiotic residues. This study aims to perform a microbiological test, followed by a quantitative confirmation analysis, on raw milk to assess the presence of antibiotic residues. Tests were conducted on 200 milk samples collected from markets and farms in Saudi Arabia and Egypt. The microbial inhibitor test (Delvotest SP-NT) revealed that 40 samples were positive for antibiotic residues. The positive samples were further tested using liquid chromatography-tandem mass spectrometry (LC-MS/MS) as a confirmatory quantitative test for 29 antibiotics that belong to five groups: tetracyclines, sulfonamides, fluoroquinolones, macrolides, and lactamases. Only four samples tested positive for oxytetracycline residues above the maximum residue limit. Based on these results, researchers suggest a monitoring system that considers both microbial and HPLC-MS/MS methods when detecting antibiotic residues in bovine milk. The analysis of risk to human health revealed that antibiotic residues at the detected levels do not pose any health risks to consumers.

Abstract
A simple and effective pretreatment method based on matrix solid-phase dispersion was developed for the determination of pharmaceutical and personal care products (PPCPs) and their metabolites in fish by high-performance liquid chromatography tandem mass spectrometry. The type and amount of dispersant, adsorbent, and eluting solvent were optimized by a single-factor experiment and Box-Behnken design. Under the optimal conditions with 2.5 g of Florisil as a dispersant, 500 mg of C18 as an adsorbent, and 5 mL of acetonitrile as an eluting solvent, the recoveries ranged from 70.4 to 99.9% with relative standard deviations less than 10.5%, and the limits of quantitation ranged from 0.13 to 1.01 μg/kg. The developed method was successfully applied to detect PPCPs in marketed fish, and five PPCPs, including triclocarban, sulfadiazine, sulfadimidine, sulfamethoxazole, and carbamazepine, were detected at trace levels. The proposed method, which has the advantages of short analysis time, less solvent consumption, and high sensitivity, can be used for the determination of trace PPCPs in fish.

Abstract
The extensive use of antibiotics leads to antibiotic residues in frequently consumed foods. Generally, the main use of antibiotics in animals is to treat and prevent diseases and growth promotion. However, the residues and their breakdown products have several side effects on the human body and, in a broader sense, on the environment. In relation to the human body, the frequency of mutations is increased, the bone marrow is damaged (chloramphenicol), and the reproductive organs of humans are affected. Carcinogenic effects have been found with antibiotics such as sulfamethazine, oxytetracycline, and furazolidone. We summarized data from 73 scientific studies reporting antimicrobial residues in animal products that were freely available for sale. The studies were published in English starting from 1999 till 2021 and identified through the Pubmed search engine. The aims were to find out which antibiotics, legal or illegal, could be found in animal foods worldwide. Which are stable to get into the food chain and exceed the maximum residue limits (MRL) regarding the EU guidelines as a comparison. Reducing antimicrobial residues in food from animal origin and, in addition to this, fighting the tremendous growth and spread of antimicrobial resistance will undoubtedly be one of the most difficult food safety challenges in the coming years.

Abstract
Residual antibacterial agents in 5909 animal and fishery products in Tokyo, Japan, were investigated over 17 consecutive years (2003-2019). Monitoring of 32 antibacterial agents (lincosamides, macrolides, penicillins, quinorones and tetracyclines) per product was accomplished via two steps: screening (by microbiological methods) and confirmation (by instrumental methods). Microbiological screening methods identified presumptive groups and determined semi-quantitative values. The instrumental methods quantified 81 residues of 11 different antibacterial agents in 72 samples. The screening strategy based on microbiological methods demonstrated the following: (i) the majority of the samples (over 99%) met Japanese regulations, (ii) using multiple methods provided a reliable inspection system with accurate quantitative values and (iii) there was a constant presence of tetracyclines and unexpected residues (lincomycin and norfloxacin) in various products. Thus, this long-term monitoring and screening strategy provided evidence that the frequencies and trends of residual antibacterial agents not only enhance food safety but also help to prevent antimicrobial resistance.

Abstract
It is commonly known that the widespread use of antibiotics has led to their existence in food products as residues and ingestion of these food products may create a selection pressure on bacteria inhabiting the human body. In this study, an optimized method for the analysis of antibiotic residues in different food groups, including cereals, meat, eggs, milk, vegetables, and fruits, was developed using solvent extraction, solid-phase extraction cleanup, and liquid chromatography-mass spectrometry (LC-MS/MS). The limits of detection (LODs) were achieved as 0.007-1.1, 0.008-0.46, 0.002-0.67, 0.007-0.63, 0.001-0.098, and 0.005-0.26 ng/g in ng/g in cereals, meat, eggs, milk, vegetables, and fruits, respectively. The overall average recoveries at three spiking levels of the 81 antibiotics (5, 25, and 50 ng/g dry weight) were 82 ± 26, 77 ± 26, 70 ± 34, 69 ± 31, 73 ± 29, and 62 ± 37% in cereals, meat, eggs, milk, vegetables, and fruits, respectively. The method was then applied to the analysis of the targets in the collected wheat flour, mutton, chicken egg, boxed milk, cabbage, and banana samples, with the total concentration of the antibiotics detected being 4.4, 2.3, 36, 5.5, 2.7, and 14 ng/g, respectively. This work suggests that the developed method provides a time- and cost-effective method to identify and quantify antibiotic residues in common food products.

Abstract
The use of a variety of antibiotics in fish farming raises serious concern about the development of antibiotic resistance. Sulfonamides antibiotics (SAs), which are widely used in aquaculture and generate large eco‒toxicological effects with significant mutagenicity and teratogenic consequences, are still difficult to determine in aquatic organisms. In this study, an automatic technology was developed by coupling on‒line solid phase extraction system (on‒line SPE) with ultra‒high‒performance liquid chromatography spectrometry‒mass spectrometry (UHPLC‒MS/MS). Particularly, using a single on‒line column in the process of sample pretreatment, e.g., HLB or C18, phospholipids that potentially caused the matrix effect cannot be removed form biological sample. We applied a mixed cation exchange column (Oasis® MCX) connected with a hydrophilic lipophilic balance column (Oasis® HLB) in series in on‒line SPE clean‒up to remove interferences and finally obtained a clear and stable eluant. The on‒line SPE working conditions and UHPLC‒MS/MS parameters were optimized for their sensitivity, accuracy, decision limit, and detection capability, which were further calibrated for fish, shrimp and crab. The results showed that the limits of detection and limits of quantification ranged from 1.46 to 15.5 ng/kg, and 4.90-51.6 ng/kg, respectively. Accuracy values covered 71.5%-102% at the three concentration levels (0.1, 0.5, 1.0 μg/kg) for all compounds and average repeatability (relative standard deviation, RSD%) ranged from 3.47% to 14.2%. This on‒line SPE coupled with UHPLC‒MS/MS method is a way forward for an automatic, powerful detection technology for determination of antibiotics from complex matrix.

Abstract
The potential risk to human health of antibiotics that pass through the food chain has become an important global issue, but there are few reports on the response of ginger (Zingiber officinale) to antibiotic pollution. In this study, we investigated the enrichment characteristics and biological response of ginger to sulfamethoxazole (SMZ) and ofloxacin (OFL) residues, which are common in the environment. Lower levels of SMZ, OFL and their combined duplex treatment (SMZ+OFL) promoted the growth of ginger, but the critical doses necessary to stimulate growth differed among treatments: 10 mg L-1 SMZ, 1 mg L-1 OFL and 1 mg L-1 (SMZ+OFL) had the strongest stimulating effects. At higher dosages, the root growth and light energy utilization efficiency of ginger were impaired, and (SMZ+OFL) had the strongest inhibitory effect. Treatments with lower levels of antibiotics had no significant effect on reactive oxygen species and antioxidant enzyme activities. However, when SMZ, OFL and SMZ+OFL concentrations exceeded 10 mg L-1, the contents of H2O2, O2- and MDA continued to increase, while the activities of SOD, POD, CAT first increased and then decreased, especially in SMZ+OFL. Ginger accumulated more SMZ and OFL in rhizomes and less in leaves, and accumulation increased significantly as antibiotic concentration increased. When SMZ concentration was 1 mg L-1, the SMZ concentrations in rhizomes, roots, and leaves were 0.23, 0.15, and 0.05 mg kg-1, respectively, and the residual SMZ in the rhizome was 2.3 times higher than the maximum residue limit. The abundance of the resistance genes sul1, sul2, qnrS, and intI1 increased with increasing antibiotic concentrations, and intI1 abundance was the highest. OFL induced higher levels of intI1 expression than did SMZ.

Abstract
Antibiotic residues in chicken meat samples is a serious public health concern due to their harmful effects on consumers' health. We conducted this research in 2017 to determine antibiotic residues in chicken meat samples and to describe the knowledge, attitude, and practice (KAP) of farmers on the antibiotic uses in poultry farms at Tay Ninh province. Farmers who raised chickens at their farmhouses were surveyed using a KAP survey questionnaire, and 106 chicken meat samples were analyzed for 29 kinds of antibiotic residues. The results showed that 27.4% samples were positive with 11 kinds of 4 antibiotic groups: fluoroquinolones, sulfonamides, tetracycline, and macrolides. A total of 50.9% farmers needed to improve their knowledge on the appropriate use of antibiotics. Although 54.7% famers had positive attitude, just 17% had good practices. It was recommended that the levels of antibiotic residues in chickens should be communicated to food safety and veterinary authorities, chicken farmers, and the general public. Enhancing the training and coaching for each group of farmers to improve their knowledge and practices on the appropriate use of antibiotics in raising chickens is needed. Local government should enhance the level of control and punishment for drug sellers and end users regarding the use of banned antibiotics in chickens.

Abstract
A recombinant gene CCS consisting of three single genes (CAP-ScFv, CPFX-ScFv and SM2-ScFv) were constructed by PCR with three pairs of primers. The length of CCS gene fragment was 2,260 bp. A recombinant plasmid (pGEX-CCS) was obtained in pGEX-6p-1. pGEX-CCS was induced in E.coli BL21(DE3), and the molecular weight of recombinant fusion protein (GST-CCS) was 108.87 kDa. GST-CCS was successfully applied to analysis of CAP-OVA (CAP-ovalbumin conjugate), CPFX-OVA and SM2-OVA simultaneously. The sensitivity of GST-CCS against three veterinary drugs was tested by indirect ELISA at dilution ratio 1:8000. These findings provide a foundation for the construction of fusion genes with linkers and for the potential development of a rapid screening method for the simultaneous detection of veterinary drug residues.

Abstract
In this study, a highly sensitive and specific monoclonal antibody (mAb) against azaperone was produced. The mAb belonged to the IgG2b subtype and its half maximal inhibitory concentration (IC50) was 0.46 ng/mL. The limit of detection value was 0.081 ng/mL and the linear range (IC20-IC80) was 0.165-1.29 ng/mL. Based on this anti-azaperone mAb, a colloidal gold immunochromatographic strip assay method was established for the detection of azaperone in pork and pork liver samples. For pork samples, the cutoff value of the colloidal gold immunochromatographic strip assay was 10 ng/g, and the cutoff value was also 10 ng/g in pig liver samples. This colloidal gold immunochromatographic strip assay is a rapid, simple, and practical method for the detection of azaperone in pork and pork liver samples available in markets.

Abstract
Recently, the widespread use of antibiotic has raised concerns about the potential health risks associated with their microbiological effect. In the present study, we investigated 990 elderly individuals (age ≥ 60 years) from the Cohort of Elderly Health and Environment Controllable Factors in West Anhui, China. A total of 45 representative antibiotics and two antibiotic metabolites were monitored in urine samples through liquid chromatography electrospray tandem mass spectrometry. The results revealed that 34 antibiotics were detected in 93.0% of all urine samples and the detection frequencies of each antibiotic varied between 0.2% and 35.5%. The overall detection frequencies of seven human antibiotics (HAs), 10 veterinary antibiotics (VAs), three antibiotics preferred as HAs (PHAs), and 14 preferred as VAs (PVAs) in urines were 27.4%, 62.9%, 30.9% and 72.7%, respectively. Notably, the samples with concentrations of six PVAs (sulfamethoxazole, trimethoprim, oxytetracycline, danofloxacin, norfloxacin and lincomycin) above 5000 ng/mL accounted for 1.7% of all urine samples. Additionally, in 62.7% of urine samples, the total antibiotic concentration was in the range of the limits of detection to 20.0 ng/mL. Furthermore, the elderly individuals with the sum of estimated daily intakes of VAs and PVAs more than 1 μg/kg/day accounted for 15.2% of all participants, and a health risk related to change in gut microbiota under antibiotic stimulation was expected in 6.7% of the elderly individuals. Especially, ciprofloxacin was the foremost contributor to the health risk, and its hazard quotient value was more than one in 3.5% of all subjects. Taken together, the elderly Chinese people were extensively exposed to VAs, and some elderly individuals may have a health risk associated with dysbiosis of the gut microbiota.

Abstract
A method based on micellar liquid chromatography was developed to determine oxolinic acid, ciprofloxacin, enrofloxacin, and sarafloxacin in eggs and egg products. The antimicrobial drugs were obtained in a micellar solution which was directly injected. The analytes were resolved using a C18 column and a mobile phase of 0.05 M sodium dodecyl sulfate—7.5% 1-propanol—0.5% triethylamine, buffered at pH 3 with phosphate salt, running under the isocratic mode. The signal was monitored by fluorescence. Validation was successfully performed according to the EU Commission Decision 2002/657/EC in terms of specificity, calibration range (LOQ to 1 mg/kg), linearity (R2 > 0.9991), limit of detection and decision limit (0.01–0.05 mg/kg), limit of quantification (0.025–0.150 mg/kg), detection capability (<0.4 times decision limit), trueness (−14.2% to +9.8%), precision (<14.0%), robustness, and stability. The procedure was environmentally friendly, safe, easy-to-conduct, inexpensive, and had a high sample throughput, thus it is useful for routine analysis as a screening method in a laboratory for food residue control.

Abstract
A survey we conducted suggests that the ingestion of veterinary drug residues in
edible animal parts constitutes a potential health hazard for its consumers,
including, specifically, the possibility of developing multidrug resistance,
carcinogenicity, and disruption of intestinal normal microflora. The survey
results indicated that antibiotics, parasitic drugs, anticoccidial, or
nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAIDs) are broadly used, and this use in
livestock is associated with the appearance of residues in various animal
products such as milk, meat, and eggs. We observed that different cooking
procedures, heating temperatures, storage times, fermentation, and pH have the
potential to decrease drug residues in animal products. Several studies have
reported the use of thermal treatments and sterilization to decrease the
quantity of antibiotics such as tetracycline, oxytetracycline, macrolides, and
sulfonamides, in animal products. Fermentation treatments also decreased levels
of penicillin and pesticides such as dimethoate, malathion,
Dichlorodiphenyldichloroethylene, and lindane. pH, known to influence decreases
in cloxacillin and oxacillin levels, reportedly enhanced the dissolution of
antimicrobial drug residues. Pressure cooking also reduced aldrin, dieldrin, and
endosulfan in animal products. Therefore, this review provides updated
information on the control of drug residues in animal products, which is of
significance to veterinarians, livestock producers, and consumer health.

Abstract
Background Breast milk is a natural and unique nutrient for optimum growth and development of the newborn. The aim of this study was to investigate the presence of unpredictable drug residues in mothers’ milk and the relationship between drug residues and maternal-infant characteristics. Methods In a descriptive study, breastfed infants under 3 months of age and their mothers who applied for child health monitoring were enrolled for the study. Information forms were completed for maternal-infant characteristics, breastfeeding problems, crying and sleep characteristics of infants. Maternal and infant anthropometric measurements and maternal milk sample were taken. Edinburgh Postpartum Depression Scale was applied to mothers. RANDOX Infiniplex kit for milk was used for residual analysis. Results Overall, 90 volunteer mothers and their breastfed infants were taken into the study and the mean age of the mothers and their infants was 31.5 ± 4.2 years and 57.8 ± 18.1 days, respectively. Anti-inflammatory drug residues in breast milk were detected in 30.0% of mothers and all had tolfenamic acid. Overall, 94.4% had quinolone, 93.3% beta-lactam, 31.1% aminoglycoside and 13.3% polymycin residues. Drugs used during pregnancy or lactation period were not affected by the presence of residues. Edinburgh postpartum depression scores of mothers and crying and sleeping problems of infants were similar in cases with and without drug residues in breast milk. When controlling confounding factors, maternal body mass index alterations were detected to be significantly lower in mothers with anti-inflammatory drug residues in breast milk than in their counterparts (p = 0.017). Conclusions Our study suggests that there are unpredictable drug residues in the milk of many mothers. Anti-inflammatory drug exposure might affect maternal weight change during the postpartum period. Further studies are required to evaluate the impact of drug residues on maternal and infant health.

Abstract
Twenty-two antibiotic residues quantitatively detected in illegally imported poultry tissues. Macrolides, roxithromycin and tylosin were mostly detected in all tissue samples. Maximum concentration above MRL recorded for roxithromycin and tylosin with 57.14% and 14.29% violation. Sulfonamides indicated high detection frequency in turkey muscle tissues (46.15%).
Importation of poultry produce into Nigeria through its land borders has heightened, notwithstanding the government’s ban on such products. This study examined imported frozen poultry products for antibiotic residues considering their health implications. A solid-phase extraction method using liquid chromatography-tandem mass spectrometry in the positive and negative electrospray ionisation and the multiple reaction monitoring modes were employed. The antibiotics were extracted with acetonitrile-dichloromethane. Chromatographic separation was on Waters Acquity UPLC® BEH C18 column with acetonitrile, and water gradient and the antibiotics analysed using Electrospray positive ionisation polarity switch in a single run of fourteen minutes. Residues of nineteen (19) antibiotics were found in the three different matrices at different levels with varying detection frequencies ranging between 2 and 4% (sulfamoxole, penicillin-G, albendazole and phebendazole) and 14–54% for all the other antibiotics. The highest number of violative samples was found in the turkey gizzard and chicken muscle. Sulfixosazole had the highest percentage violation of 80.00% in turkey gizzard while sulfamethoxazole, notwithstanding its lower frequency in chicken muscle had highest maximum concentration and 100% violation. The presence of these drugs, however, does not pose any immediate health risk.

Abstract
A total of 450 samples consisting of red meat, poultry meat, aquatic product and raw milk were collected during winter 2016 and summer 2017. 22.2% (100/450) of collected meat and raw milk samples were found to be contaminated with antibiotic residues in the initial screening using Premi®test. According to the enzyme linked immunosorbent assay (ELISA) results, the mean tetracyclines (TCs) concentration of meat samples determined as follows: chicken (155.41 µg/kg) > turkey (138.68 µg/kg) > quail (130.7 µg/kg) > cow (108.92 µg/kg) > calf (105.18 µg/kg) > goat (99.4 µg/kg) > sheep (95.22 µg/kg) > rainbow trout (35.62 µg/kg) > shrimp (31.80 µg/kg). The content of TCs in cow, goat and sheep milk samples were found to be ranged 45.6-163.5 µg/L, 72.4-101.1 µg/L and 65.5-98.9 µg/L, respectively. 5.7% (26/450) of samples had TCs confirmed the ELISA results using high performance liquid chromatography coupled with ultra-violet detection, although the concentration of TCs residues in samples was higher than that of ELISA.

Abstract
The abundant use of antibiotics leads to antibiotic residues in frequently consumed foods. Residual antibiotics in food may have adverse effects on humans by directly causing disease via low-dose exposure and indirect harm via antibiotic resistance. However, the current methods for antibiotic extraction and analysis in food have not yet formed a uniform standard, and only a few data exist regarding the residual antibiotic condition in various types of foods. Hence, we review the literature since 2008 to summarize analytical methods and residue status of antibiotics in food. Then, we discuss the causes of antibiotic residues in food and the possible hazards to human health. We hope that the joint efforts of the scientific community and political circles will lead to the formation of a unified standard for the extraction and analysis of antibiotics in food, to allow for comprehensive monitoring of residual antibiotics and ensure human health.

Abstract
Emergence and spread of antimicrobial-resistant bacteria, including extended-spectrum β-lactamase (ESBL)-producing Escherichia coli, have become serious problems worldwide. Recent studies conducted in Vietnam revealed that ESBL-producing E. coli are widely distributed in food animals and people. CTX-M-9 and CTX-M-1 are the most prevalent β-lactamases among the identified ESBLs. Furthermore, most of the ESBL-producing E. coli isolates were multi-drug resistant. Residual antimicrobials such as sulfamethoxazole, trimethoprim, sulfadimidine, cephalexin, and sulfadiazine were also detected at a high level in both animal meats and environmental water collected from several cities, including Ho Chi Minh city and Can Tho city. These recent studies indicated that improper use of antimicrobials in animal-originated food production might contribute to the emergence and high prevalence of ESBL-producing E. coli in Vietnam. Although clonal ESBL-producing E. coli was not identified, CTX-M-55 gene-carrying plasmids with similar sizes (105-139 kb) have been commonly detected in the ESBL-producing E. coli strains isolated from various food animals and human beings. This finding strongly suggests that horizontal transfer of the CTX-M plasmid among various E. coli strains played a critical role in the emergence and high prevalence of ESBL-producing E. coli in Vietnam.

Review of Biological and Chemical Health Risks Associated with Pork Consumption in Vietnam: Major Pathogens and Hazards Identified in Southeast Asia. J FOOD QUALITY 2019. Abstract
Foodborne illness is a difficult public health burden to measure, with accurate incidence data usually evading disease surveillance systems. Yet, the global scope of foodborne disease and its impacts on socioeconomic development make it an important health risk to address, particularly in low- and middle-income countries. In Vietnam, rapid development has seen large-scale commercial operations rise to coexist amongst traditional value chains in the food landscape, most of which operates outside of a domestic food safety network. Rapid socioeconomic development has also seen an increase in meat consumption, with pork being the most consumed meat product nationally. Expanding pork value chains, and the increasing diversity of actors within them, facilitates the growth and propagation of hazards which are passed onto Vietnamese consumers. In order to guide illness prevention and governance efforts, this review was conducted to examine health risks associated with pork consumption in Vietnam. Synthesis of the available literature provided evidence that Salmonella spp. bacteria are a major cause of foodborne illness from Vietnamese pork products. However, contaminants of global concern, including Salmonella spp. and Trichinella spiralis, occur alongside those considered neglected tropical diseases, such as Taenia solium. Infections and complications associated with ingestion of Streptococcus suis bacteria are also an issue, with Streptococcus suis infections usually limited to occupational infections amongst meat handlers in modernised value chains. A risk factor underscoring transmission of Trichinella spiralis, Taenia solium, and Streptococcus suis in Vietnam that emerges from the literature is the consumption of dishes containing raw or undercooked pork. Available data indicates that infections associated with raw pork consumption disproportionately affect men and people in regional mountainous areas of northwest Vietnam, where many of Vietnam’s ethnic minority communities reside. In addition, epidemiological data from recorded disease outbreaks that result from raw pork consumption demonstrate that these outbreaks usually follow major sociocultural events such as weddings, funerals, and Lunar New Year celebrations. Potential health impacts resulting from residues of antibiotics and heavy metals are also cause for concern, though the direct links between chemical contaminants in food and the development of disease are difficult to conclusively deduce.

Abstract
A framework was developed to characterize the antimicrobial use/antimicrobial resistance complex in livestock systems in Indonesia, Vietnam, and Thailand. Farm profitability, disease prevention, and mortality rate reduction were identified as drivers toward antimicrobial use in livestock systems. It revealed that antimicrobial use was high in all sectors studied, and that routine preventative use was of particular importance to broiler production systems. Misleading feed labeling was identified as a hurdle to the collection of accurate antimicrobial use data, with farmers being unaware of the antimicrobials contained in some commercial feed. Economic analysis found that the cost of antimicrobials was low relative to other farm inputs, and that farm profitability was precariously balanced. High disease and poor prices were identified as potential drivers toward economic loss. The research indicates that antimicrobial use in small-scale poultry production systems improves feed conversion ratios and overall productivity. However, data were limited to quantify adequately these potential gains and their impacts on the food supply. During the study, all countries embraced and implemented policies on better management of antimicrobial use in livestock and surveillance of antimicrobial resistance. Future policies need to consider farm-level economics and livestock food supply issues when developing further antimicrobial use interventions in the region.

Abstract
The presence of antibiotic residues in beef is considered a serious threat to public health. This study aimed to detect antibiotic residues in raw beef and the impact of low and high temperature treatments on residues persistence. A total of 250 sampleswere collected from retail markets in Erbil city (Iraq) and analyzed microbiologically in plates pre-inoculated with Bacillus subtilis. The overall occurrence of antibiotics residues was (10.8%).The highest rate was detected in January (16.7%). Cooking for thirty minutes completely deactivate antibiotic residues against the challenged bacterium. In conclusion, the presence of antibiotic residues in beef samples in Erbil city was high and their persistence is markedly reduced by cooking.

We report herein a practical method for nonlethal detection of the antibiotic sulfamethazine in pig body fluids via the combination of simple extraction and paper spray mass spectrometry (PS-MS). This method requires minimal sample preparation while still providing high sensitivities and accuracies in complex matrices including pig whole blood (LOD = 7.9 μg/L; recovery = 95.4-103.7%), pig serum (LOD = 11.5 μg/L; recovery = 103.2-106.2%), and synthetic urine (LOD = 11.2 μg/L; recovery = 99.1-103.2%). Given a known correlation between the level of sulfamethazine in body fluids and edible tissues, this method shows great promise as a practical and nonlethal solution for rapid testing of the drug, which can substantially aid managerial decision in the livestock industry.

Abstract
Aim: This research aimed to analyze the presence of microbial contamination and antibiotic residue in beef meat from city slaughterhouses in East Java Province, Indonesia. Materials and Methods: A total of 40 samples from city slaughterhouses were used in this study. The tests for microbial contamination used several methods including total plate count (TPC), most probable number of Escherichia coli, detection of Staphylococcus aureus using Mannitol Salt Agar media, Salmonella spp. detection using Bismuth Sulfite Agar media and Triple Sugar Iron Agar media, and detection of the antibiotic residue by screening tests. Results: Most of the samples were contaminated with E. coli (32.5% positive samples) and S. aureus (20.0% positive samples). The mean values of TPC and S. aureus contamination were lower than the maximum limit of contamination, which were 41.58 CFU/g and 13.93 CFU/g, respectively, while the mean value of E. coli contamination was 27.03 CFU/g which was higher than the maximum limit. A low frequency of TPC (5% positive samples) and Salmonella spp. contamination (2.5% positive samples) was found in meat samples. Meat samples from two of the surveyed slaughterhouses were tested positive for antibiotic residue and six of the 40 samples (15%) were also tested positive for the antibiotic residue. Conclusion: It was concluded that most of the microbial contamination in beef meat from city slaughterhouses was below the maximum limit of contamination and only two slaughterhouses were found antibiotic residues in the meat samples.

Abstract
The extensive use of antibiotics leading to the rapid spread of antibiotic resistance poses high health risks to humans, but to date there is still lack of a quantitative model to properly assess the risks. Concerns over the health risk of antibiotic residues in the environment are mainly (1) the potential hazard of ingested antibiotic residues in the environment altering the human microbiome and promoting emergence and selection for bacteria resistance inhabiting the human body, and (2) the potential hazard of creating a selection pressure on environmental microbiome and leading to reservoirs of antibiotic resistance in the environment. We provide a holistic view of health risk assessment of antibiotic resistance associated with antibiotic residues in the environment in contrast with that of the antibiotic resistant bacteria and discuss the main knowledge gaps and the future research that should be prioritized to achieve the quantitative risk assessment. We examined and summarized the available data and information on the four core elements of antibiotic resistance associated with antibiotic residues in the environment: hazard identification, exposure assessment, dose-response assessment, and risk characterization. The data required to characterize the risks of antibiotic residues in the environment is severely limited. The main future research needs have been identified to enable better assessments of antibiotic resistance associated with antibiotic residues in the environment: (1) establishment of a standardized monitoring guide of antibiotic residues and antibiotic resistance in the environment, (2) derivation of the relationship between antibiotic levels and pathogenic antibiotic-resistance development in different settings, and (3) establishment of the dose-response relationship between pathogenic antibiotic resistant bacteria and various infection diseases. After identification of key risk determinant parameters, we propose a conceptual framework of human health risk assessments of antibiotic residues in the environment. CAPSULE: A holistic view of human health risk assessment of antibiotic residues in the environment was provided.

Abstract
BACKGROUND An extensive exposure to antibiotics has been confirmed in children, but the predictors and potential health risk remain unclear. OBJECTIVE To investigate the predictors of antibiotics in urine and potential health risk in children of Shanghai. METHODS We selected 284 school children aged 8-11 years from a central area of Shanghai, China, in 2017. Ultra-performance liquid chromatography coupled with high-resolution mass spectrometry was used to measure 20 antibiotics, including four human antibiotics (HAs), six veterinary antibiotics (VAs), 10 human/veterinary antibiotics (H/VAs), and three metabolites in first morning urine. Logistic regression model was used to examine the associations of 17 variables related to demographic and socioeconomic factors, recent antibiotic use, drinking water intake, food consumption, and anthropometric measurements with the detection frequency of HAs, VAs, or H/VAs in urine. After daily intake was estimated, health risk was assessed for VAs and H/VAs by using hazard quotient (HQ) and hazard index (HI) based on microbiological or toxicological effects. RESULTS The detection frequencies of 20 antibiotics and three metabolites ranged from 0 to 27.8% with an overall detection frequency being 56.0%. The detection frequency of HAs increased with age and screen time at weekend. Sex, age, family income and screen time were positively associated with the detection frequencies of VAs and H/VAs. Children reporting antibiotic use in the past three months had a higher detection frequency of HAs. Children with a higher consumption frequency of dairy products had a higher detection frequency of VAs + H/VAs, but a lower detection frequency of HAs. An increased overall detection frequency of all antibiotics was seen in children with higher consumption frequencies of aquatic products, livestock and poultry meat, or milk and dairy products. HQ >1 was only found for ciprofloxacin (5.6%) and ofloxacin (0.4%) based on microbiological effect. HI >1 was found in 6.0% of children for microbiological effect and none was found for toxicological effect. CONCLUSIONS Predictors for antibiotics in urine for children included sex, age, family income, screen time, clinical use, and animal-derived food consumption. There was potential health risk for children with exposure to antibiotics.

Abstract
The aim of study was to investigate the correlation between the level of 17 antibiotic residues and 6 antibiotic resistances of Escherichia coli isolates in chicken meats. A total of 58 chicken meats were collected from retail grocery stores in five provinces in Korea. The total detection rate of antibiotic residues was 45% (26 out of 58). Ten out of 17 antibiotics were detected in chicken meats. None of the antibiotics exceeded the maximum residue level (MRLs) in chicken established by the Ministry of Food and Drug Safety (MFDS). The most detected antibiotics were amoxicillin (15.5%), followed by enrofloxacin (12.1%) and sulfamethoxazole (10.3%). In a total of 58 chicken meats, 51 E. coli strains were isolated. E. coli isolates showed the highest resistance to ampicillin (75%), followed by tetracycline (69%), ciprofloxacin (65%), trimethoprim/ sulfamethoxazole (41%), ceftiofur (22%), and amoxicillin/clavulanic acid (12%). The results of study showed basic information on relationship between antibiotic residue and resistance for 6 compounds in 13 chicken samples. Further investigation on the antibiotic resistance patterns of various bacteria species is needed to improve food safety.

Abstract
Sulfonamide residue in foodstuffs and the environment is a serious global concern for their contribution to the occurrence of antibiotic-resistant bacteria, especially in developing countries. Here, we describe a novel, simple, and low-cost bioassay for sulfonamides, which has high potential versatility for use in low-resource settings. The bioassay method is based on a purpose-built luminescent assay reaction that detects sulfonamide groups. The luminescent assay reaction comprises dihydropteroate synthase, a target enzyme of sulfonamides, and luminescent pyrophosphate detection reagent, which triggers a sequence of biomolecular reactions that convert sulfonamides to emit luminescence. The novel assay detected at least six different sulfonamides with an estimated limit of detection of <25 ng ml-1 in a solution-phase assay using a microplate reader. More importantly, the luminescent assay reaction functioned even after spotting and freeze-drying on a wax pattern-printed paper platform. The paper-embedded luminescent assay reaction showed response signals to sulfadiazine within 30 min at a limit of detection similar to that of the solution-phase assay using a microplate reader. The signal could be recorded using a digital camera in the dark and required no other laboratory infrastructure, freeing the assay from the constraints of a well-fitted laboratory.
