A review on current progress of graphene-based ternary nanocomposites in the removal of anionic and cationic inorganic pollutants

The current review aims to summarize the ongoing advances in high-performing graphene-based ternary nanocomposites for removing cationic and anionic inorganic pollutants. Graphene derivatives are extensively utilized for the development of composites due to their high synergism with co-functional materials, rational design, flexible surface chemistry, high mobile charge carriers, improved binding properties, and many more. The past ten years have witnessed progressive research on graphene-based ternary nanocomposites in a multitude of pollution remediation applications. Therefore, the focus falls on understanding how these ternary nanocomposites are tailored to capture the inorganic cationic and anionic contaminants with particular emphasis on graphene derivatives as base matrix and filler. The review investigates the synthesis, categorization, and characterization techniques of graphene-based ternary composites. Besides, the study broadens the understanding of the binding mechanism of the pollutants onto graphene ternary composites. The review also assesses the separation and recycling efficacy of the composites in detail. The future prospects in improving the practical application of the ternary systems also have been discussed. The comprehensive review on graphene based ternary systems detailing their structural and functional aspects, as well as their performance as inorganic decontaminants can provide deep insights for researchers in improvising wastewater treatment technologies.

Performance of hydrogel immobilized bioreactors combined with different iron ore wastes for denitrification and removal of copper and lead: Optimization and possible mechanism

Reasonable and efficient removal of mixed pollutants (nitrate and heavy metals) in industrial wastewater under heavy metal pollution has attracted more attention in recent years. The target strain Aquabacterium sp. XL4 was immobilized with different iron ore wastes (IOW) using polyvinyl alcohol (PVA) to construct four immobilized bioreactors. The results showed that when the ratio of C/N was 1.5 and the hydraulic retention time (HRT) was 8.0h, the denitrification performance of the bioreactor was the best, and the maximum denitrification efficiency of the bioreactor with sponge iron (SI) as the iron source was 97.19% (2.42mg L^-1 h^-1). Furthermore, by adjusting the concentration of Cu²⁺ and Pb²⁺, the stress behavior of the bioreactor to heavy metals under the influence of each IOW was investigated. The bioreactor has stronger tolerance and removal efficiency to Pb²⁺ and Cu²⁺ in the presence of pellets ore (PO) and refined iron ore (RO), respectively. Moreover, the high-throughput data showed that Aquabacterium accounted for a high proportion in the immobilized bioreactor, and the prediction of functional genes based on the KEGG database showed that the addition of IOW was closely related to the acceleration of nitrate transformation and the inflow and outflow of iron in cells.

Bioengineered magnetic graphene oxide microcomposites for bioremediation of chromium in ex situ - A novel strategy for aggrandized recovery by electromagnetic gadgetry

Novel magnetic microcomposites consisting of graphene oxide and iron oxide was synthesized to immobilize metabolically versatile Paracoccus sp. MKU1 and Leucobacter sp. AA7 and tested for the simultaneous adsorption and enhanced biological detoxification of hexavalent chromium (Cr(VI)) from tannery wastewater. This study reports highest chromium adsorption of 272.6 mg/g and 179.3 mg/g with complete reduction of Cr(VI) to Cr(III) by the microcomposites of AA7 and MKU1 from wastewater in a bioreactor (10 L) at large-scale for first time in ex situ. Furthermore, both the microcomposites displayed an enhanced detoxification of tannery wastewater by reducing various physicochemical conditions such as ammonia, nitrate, TDS, fluoride, CaCO_3, Ca, Mg, NO₃ and SO₂ under the permissible limits. Use of electromagnetic device for magnetic microcomposites recovery from bioreactor yielded a maximum of 88% and 80.6% recovery for AA7 and MKU1, respectively. The rate of chromium recuperation achieved following desorption from the microcomposites of AA7 and MKU1 was 90.71% and 93.97%, respectively. Thus, the multifarious benefits including adsorption, metabolic detoxification, recovery, and recuperation by single functional microcomposites seems to be an intriguing and profitable approach for practicing in real-time operations to effectively remove heavy metals from the contaminated wastewater for environmental protection.

Pyrolysis of marine algae for biochar production for adsorption of Ciprofloxacin from aqueous solutions

Biochars derived from three species of algae was synthesized by impregnating the green algae Ulva Ohnoi, red algae Agardhiella subulata, and brown algae Sargassum hemiphyllum with ZnCl₂ chemical activator and employed as a long-term adsorbent for ciprofloxacin (CIP) removal from water. The results revealed that combination of brown algae and ZnCl₂ chemical activator (ZBAB) successfully produced mesoporous biochar with excellent physicochemical characteristics and gave the best CIP adsorption capacity. The ZBAB yielded a high CIP adsorption capacity (190-300 mg g^-1) under various parameter effects (initial pH, temperature and major ions). Throughought the surface characterization techniques, the proposed adsorption mechanisms were electrostatic interaction, π-π EDA interaction, pore filling and hydrogen bonding. Moreover, not only algal biochars exhibited innovative and potential adsorbent for rapid and effective remediate pollution from water, but combination of algal biomass and ZnCl₂ activator also created renewable source of energy from biomass pyrolysis.

Magnetic Solid-Phase Extraction Based on Magnetic Sulfonated Reduced Graphene Oxide for HPLC-MS/MS Analysis of Illegal Basic Dyes in Foods

In this study, a magnetic solid-phase extraction (MSPE) method coupled with High-Performance Liquid Chromatography Mass Spectrometry (HPLC–MS/MS) for the determination of illegal basic dyes in food samples was developed and validated. This method was based on Magnetic sulfonated reduced graphene oxide (M-S-RGO), which was sensitive and selective to analytes with structure of multiaromatic rings and negatively charged ions. Several factors affecting MSPE efficiency such as pH and adsorption time were optimized. Under the optimum conditions, the calibration curves exhibited good linearity, ranging from 5 to 60 µg/g with correlation coefficients >0.9950. The limits of detection of 16 basic dyes were in the range of 0.01–0.2 µg/L. The recoveries ranged from 70% to 110% with RSD% < 10%. The results indicate that M-S-RGO is an efficient and selective adsorbent for the extraction and cleanup of basic dyes. Due to the MSPE procedures, matrix effect and interference were eliminated in the analysis of HPLC–MS/MS without the matrix-matched standards. Thus, validation data showed that the proposed MSPE–HPLC–MS/MS method was rapid, efficient, selective, and sensitive for the determination of illegal basic dyes in foods.

Adsorption behavior of heavy metal ions on a polymer-immobilized amphoteric biosorbent: Surface interaction assessment

Here we unveiled a novel magnetically separable amphoteric biosorbent (PD-Fe₃O₄@CCS) and investigated its adsorption behavior toward two classes of heavy metals, hexavalent chromium (Cr(VI)) and copper (Cu(II)) ions from water. Results indicated that the adsorption behavior of PD-Fe₃O₄@CCS for Cr(VI) was well described by Langmuir model; while for Cu(II) adsorption, the Freundlich model was the better one. Based on the kinetic results, both Cr(VI) and Cu(II) adsorption on PD-Fe₃O₄@CCS fitted well with the pseudo-second-order kinetic model. To evaluate the reusability and stability of PD-Fe₃O₄@CCS, regeneration tests were carried out for five cycles. Furthermore, the applicable feasibility of PD-Fe₃O₄@CCS in the real water matrix (including the single and binary pollutant systems) was studied, and results suggested the promising potential of PD-Fe₃O₄@CCS for large-scale application. Apart from these, the surface interactions between PD-Fe₃O₄@CCS and heavy metal ions in single and binary systems were systematically investigated based on FTIR and XPS analyses, which provided an essential implication for comprehending the interactions between biosorbents and contaminants in wastewater.

Study of the removal of ciprofloxacin by Zn–GO@SA aerogel microspheres

Zn–GO@SA aerogel microspheres were prepared via a simple ionic–gel method, showing excellent adsorption performance toward ciprofloxacin and easy separation from solution.

Efficient Removal 17-Estradiol by Graphene-Like Magnetic Sawdust Biochar: Preparation Condition and Adsorption Mechanism

The occurrence of environmental endocrine disrupting chemicals (EDCs) in aquatic environments has caused extensive concern. Graphene-like magnetic sawdust biochar was synthesized using potassium ferrate (K₂FeO₄) to make activated sawdust biochar and applied for the removal of 17-estradiol (E2). The characterization showed that the surface morphology of five graphene-like magnetic sawdust biochars prepared with different preparation conditions were quite different. The specific surface area and pore structure increased with the increment of K₂FeO₄ addition. The results have shown that graphene-like magnetic sawdust biochar (1:1/900 °C) had the best removal on E2. The experimental results indicated that pseudo-first-order kinetic model and the Langmuir model could describe the adsorption process well, in which the equilibrium adsorption capacity (q_e,1) of 1:1/900 °C were 59.18 mg·g⁻¹ obtained from pseudo-first-order kinetic model and the maximum adsorption capacity (q_max) of 1:1/900 °C were 133.45 mg·g⁻¹ obtained from Langmuir model at 298K. At the same time, lower temperatures, the presence of humic acid (HA), and the presence of NaCl could be regulated to change the adsorption reaction in order to remove E2. Adsorption capacity was decreased with the increase of solution pH because pH value not only changed the surface charge of graphene-like magnetic sawdust biochar, but also affected the E2 in the water. The possible adsorption mechanism for E2 adsorption on graphene-like magnetic sawdust biochar was multifaceted, involving chemical adsorption and physical absorption, such as H-bonding, π-π interactions, micropore filling effects, and electrostatic interaction. To sum up, graphene-like magnetic sawdust biochar was found to be a promising absorbent for E2 removal from water.

Trace metals geochemistry for health assessment coupled with adsorption remediation method for the groundwater of Lorong Serai 4, Hulu Langat, west coast of Peninsular Malaysia

The research study was carried out to evaluate trace metals (Pb, Cd, Se, Al, Mn, Cu, Zn, Fe, As, Ni, Cr, and Ag) concentrations in groundwater of Lorong Serai 4, Hulu Langat, Selangor, Malaysia. Additionally, the research study focused on determining non-carcinogenic and carcinogenic health risks, sources of the contaminants, and effective remediation methods. The results show that the concentration levels of Pb, Cd, Se, Al, Cu, Zn, Ni, Cr, and Ag are lower than their corresponding permissible limits, while Fe, Mn, and As concentrations exceed their acceptable limit. The hazard index of the groundwater in the area exceeded the acceptable limit, showing the rate of carcinogenic and non-carcinogenic health effects associated with the water. The findings also indicate that the lifetime cancer risk is high compared to the maximum limits of lifetime cancer risk from the drinking water (10^-6 to 10^-4). The groundwater geochemical data of the area are used in establishing the source of Fe, Mn, and As metal ions. Evaluation of Fe²⁺/Fe³⁺ and S^2-/SO₄^2- redox couples and thermodynamic modelling indicates that the groundwater of the area is in redox disequilibrium. The groundwater samples contain aqueous iron sulphate, which is supersaturated, ferrous carbonate and aluminium sulphate that are saturated. The main state of redox disequilibrium is governed by mineral precipitation and dissolution. Aqueous arsenic and manganese are possibly derived from the dissolution of pyrite (arsenopyrite) and amorphous oxide-hydroxides, respectively. The high concentration of iron in the shallow groundwater in the area is primarily the result of silicate rock weathering of ferroan igneous and metamorphic minerals with a minor contribution from the oxidation of iron sulphides. Magnetite coated with graphene oxide (Fe₃O₄-GO) nanoparticles (NPs) was synthesized and characterized, and the adsorption preliminary experiments were carried out; and the Fe₃O₄-GO NPs show enhanced removal (Fe > As > Mn) capacity over graphene oxide (GO).

Ali S, Salerno M, Eldin MSM. Effective Elimination of Contaminant Antibiotics Using High-Surface-Area Magnetic-Functionalized Graphene Nanocomposites Developed from Plastic Waste

The presence of pharmaceutical residues in aquatic environments represents a risk for the equilibrium of the ecosystem and may seriously affect human safety itself in the long term. To address this issue, we have synthesized functional materials based on highly-reduced graphene oxide (HRGO), sulfonated graphene (SG), and magnetic sulfonated graphene (MSG). The method of synthesis adopted is simple and inexpensive and makes use of plastic bottle waste as the raw material. We have tested the fabricated materials for their adsorption efficiency against two model antibiotics in aqueous solutions, namely Garamycin and Ampicillin. Our tests involved the optimization of different experimental parameters of the adsorption process, such as starting antibiotic concentration, amount of adsorbent, and time. Finally, we characterized the effect of the antibiotic adsorption process on common living organisms, namely Escherichia coli DH5α (E. coli DH5α) bacteria. The results obtained demonstrate the efficiency of the method in addressing the issue of the emergence of antibiotic-resistant bacteria, which will help in preventing changes in the ecosystem.

Performance Differences of Hexavalent Chromium Adsorbents Caused by Graphene Oxide Drying Process

In this study, the influence of drying conditions on amine (−NH₃) functionalization of graphene oxide (GO) was evaluated, and the hexavalent chromium (Cr(VI)) adsorption efficiency of the prepared materials was compared. 3-[2-(2-aminoehtylamino) ethylamino]propyl-trimethoxysilane (3N) was used for amine functionalization. The synthesized materials were analyzed by SEM, BET, TGA, XPS, and EA. TGA results showed that the solution-GO (SGO) was functionalized by more 3N molecules than freeze-dried GO (FDGO) and oven-dried GO (ODGO). Additionally, XPS analysis also showed that the ratio of N/C and Si/C was relatively high in SGO than FDGO and ODGO. The maximum adsorption capacity of SGO, FDGO, and ODGO for Cr(VI) was 258.48, 212.46, and 173.45 mg g⁻¹, respectively. These results indicate that it is better to use SGO without drying processes for efficient amine functionalization and Cr(VI) removal. However, when the drying process is required, freeze-drying is better than oven-drying.

Adsorption properties and mechanisms of novel biomaterials from banyan aerial roots via simple modification for ciprofloxacin removal

The study investigated ciprofloxacin (CIP) adsorption capacity of the novel biomaterials prepared from banyan aerial roots by simple thermochemical modification. Pretreated banyan aerial root fibers were modified with a green reagent citric acid (1 M) at 90, 120 and 150 °C, which enhanced the fiber adsorption capacity revealed by characterization and adsorption tests. Several characterization methods were applied to exploring the surface morphologies and physicochemical properties of unmodified banyan aerial roots (UBARs) and modified banyan aerial roots (T-MBARs, T stands for the modification temperature). Based on SEM images and N₂ adsorption/desorption isotherms, the modification resulted in decrease of the specific surface area owing to cellulose molecular linking. In that case, the improved CIP adsorption of MBARs might be attributed to the larger carboxyl quantity and stronger electronegativity manifested via FTIR spectra and zeta potential analysis. Through the adsorption experiments, the optimal pH value of 8 and the suitable absorbent dosage of 0.03 g were obtained. The simulation results showed that the Freundlich model can fit the adsorption thermodynamic data quite well, while the kinetic data was simulated preferably by the pseudo-second-order kinetic equation signifying the chemical adsorption process, and the intra-particle diffusion was involved in the adsorption consisted of three stages. The findings of batch experiments under diverse operations represented that MBARs purified aqueous CIP better than UBARs, closely related to the superior electronegativity. Both characterization and adsorption studies illustrated the dominant role of electrostatic interaction during CIP removal, accompanied by hydrogen bonding and diffusion interaction besides. The present work suggested that MBAR fibers could possess a promising application to ciprofloxacin potent removal from aqueous solutions.

Structural design of magnetic biosorbents for the removal of ciprofloxacin from water

Magnetic biosorbents with specific morphological and molecular structure (PMCCs) were designed for the removal of ciprofloxacin (CIP) from water. Radical polymerization method was applied to immobilize the designed polymer brushes onto core-shell shaped magnetic microspheres to fabricate PMCCs. PMCCs exhibited a maximum adsorption capacity of 527.93 mg·g^-1, which is much higher than reported adsorbents, owing to the complete stretch of polymer brushes and increased active sites as well as enhanced interaction. The investigation on the adsorption behavior of PMCCs for CIP manifested that CIP adsorption well fitted the Langmuir isotherm model and pseudo-second-order kinetic model. The calculated thermodynamic parameters suggested that CIP adsorption onto PMCCs was spontaneous and exothermic. Further recycling experiments showed a loss of less than 20% in the CIP adsorption capacity after five times, demonstrating the reusability of the as-designed biosorbents.

Evaluation of the colloidal stability and adsorption performance of reduced graphene oxide-elemental silver/magnetite nanohybrids for selected toxic heavy metals in aqueous solutions

Reduced graphene oxide (rGO) hybridized with magnetite and/or elemental silver (rGO/magnetite, rGO/silver, and rGO/magnetite/silver) nanoparticles were evaluated as potential adsorbents for toxic heavy metal ions (Cd (II), Ni(II), Zn(II), Co(II), Pb(II), and Cu(II)). Although the deposition of iron oxide and silver nanoparticles on the rGO nanosheets played an inhibitory role in metal ion adsorption, the metal adsorption efficiency by the nanohybrids (NHs) was still higher than that reported for many other sorbents (e.g., activated biochar, commercial resins, and nanosized hydrated Zr(IV) oxide particles). X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy analyses revealed that complexation with deprotonated adsorbents and cation exchange was an important mechanism for Cd(II) ion removal by the rGO and NHs. Competitive adsorption tests using multi metals showed that the adsorption affinity of metal ions on the rGO and its NHs follows the order (Cu(II), Zn(II)) > Ni(II) > Co(II) > (Pb(II), Cd(II)), which is similar to the order observed for single-metal adsorption experiments. These results can be explained by the destabilization abilities of the rGO and NHs, as well as the ionic radii of the considered metal ions. Our findings demonstrate the feasibility of using rGO-based NHs as highly efficient adsorbents for heavy metal removal from water.

Influence of Mo(VI) immobilization and temperature on As(V) sorption onto magnetic separable poly p-phenylenediamine-thiourea-formaldehyde polymer

The immobilization of Mo(VI) on magnetic poly p-phenylenediamine-thiourea-formaldehyde composite polymer (MpPDTF) (through an intermediary adsorption step) increased sorption of As(V) ions: retention capacity increased from 35.15mg As g^-1 for MpPDTF to 99.04mg As g^-1 for MpPDTF immobilized Mo(VI) at 298±1K. The impact of temperature and Mo(VI) immobilization on the kinetic and equilibrium constants of As(V) sorption on MpPDTF was evaluated. The thermodynamic study shows that Mo(VI) immobilization on MpPDTF changes the sorption process of As(V) on MpPDTF from exothermic associated with entropy decrease to endothermic associated with entropy increase. Also the impact of phosphate competition was studied. MpPDTF immobilized Mo(VI) was successfully tested for As(V) removal from the industrial effluents of insecticides manufacturing industry. NaHCO₃ solution (0.5M) can be efficiently used for sorbent regeneration for at least 3 cycles with limited decrease in sorption performance.

Nitrogen-containing amino compounds functionalized graphene oxide: Synthesis, characterization and application for the removal of pollutants from wastewater: A review

Nowadays, using graphene oxide (GO) as an adsorbent for removing pollutants from wastewater has attracted increasing attention due to its unique physic-chemical properties. Nitrogen-containing amino (NA) compounds have excellently complexing properties due to their abundant amino functional groups. In order to obtain an innovative adsorbent, functionalized GO (NAGO) has been developed by combining the properties of GO with the advantages of NA compounds. The obtained NAGO composites usually exhibit great improvement in adsorption properties and can be used as a promising adsorbent for decontamination of wastewater. This paper reviewed recent progress of synthetic technologies about fabricating various NAGOs, and their morphologies, structures and functional characteristics. Meanwhile, important applications of NAGOs for different kind of pollutants and theory of the adsorption phenomena are discussed based on the isothermal and kinetic adsorption models. Furthermore, the affecting factors, underlying mechanisms and comparison with other adsorbents for the removal of pollutants are reviewed. Conclusively, the perspectives and challenges involved in the application of NAGOs for decontamination of wastewater have also been proposed to promote sustainable development of this new exciting field.

Chemical sensing with 2D materials

During the last decade, two-dimensional materials (2DMs) have attracted great attention due to their unique chemical and physical properties, which make them appealing platforms for diverse applications in sensing of gas, metal ions as well as relevant chemical entities.

Green synthesis of monolithic column incorporated with graphene oxide using room temperature ionic liquid and eutectic solvents for capillary electrochromatography

In this work, a hybrid monolith incorporated with graphene oxide (GO) was prepared in the first time with binary green porogens of deep eutectic solvents (DESs) and room temperature ionic liquids (RTILs). GO was modified with 3-(trimethoxysilyl) propylmethacrylate (γ-MPS), and the resultant GO-MPS can be incorporated into poly (methacrylic acid-co-butylmethacrylate-co-ethylene glycol dimethacrylate) monoliths covalently. A hybrid monolithic column with high permeability and homogeneity can be achieved due to good dispersion of GO-MPS in the green solvents. The GO-MPS incorporated monolith was characterized by transmission electron microscopy, scanning electron microscopy, thermogravimetric analysis and nitrogen adsorption tests. The separation of small organic molecules of alkylphenones and alkylbenzenes was used to evaluate the performance of GO-MPS grafted monolith. The GO-MPS grafted monolith displayed the maximum column efficiency of 147,000 plates/m, about twice higher than the GO-free monolith. In addition, all of the retention and selectivity of small molecules of alkylphenones and alkylbenzenes increased due to the addition of GO-MPS. The results demonstrated that the use of DESs and RTILs is a powerful approach for the preparation of GO incorporated polymer monoliths. The monolith was further applied to the separation of tryptic digests from bovine serum albumin, and the result indicated its potential in the analysis of some complex samples.

Efficient Removal of Heavy Metals from Polluted Water with High Selectivity for Mercury(II) by 2-Imino-4-thiobiuret-Partially Reduced Graphene Oxide (IT-PRGO)

A novel chelating adsorbent, based on the chemical modification of graphene oxide by functionalization amidinothiourea to form 2-imino-4-thiobiuret-partially reduced graphene oxide (IT-PRGO), is used for the effective extraction of the toxic metal ions Hg(II), Cu(II), Pb(II), Cr(VI), and As(V) from wastewater. FTIR and Raman spectroscopy, XRD, and XPS confirm the successful incorporation of the amidinothiourea groups within the partially reduced GO nanosheets through nucleophilic substitution reactions with the acyl chloride groups in the chemically modified GO. The IT-PRGO adsorbent shows exceptional selectivity for the extraction of Hg(II) with a capacity of 624 mg/g, placing it among the top of carbon-based materials known for the high capacity of Hg(II) removal from aqueous solutions. The maximum sorption capacities for As(V), Cu(II), Cr(VI), and Pb(II) are 19.0, 37.0, 63.0, and 101.5 mg/g, respectively. The IT-PRGO displays a 100% removal of Hg(II) at concentrations up to 100 ppm with 90%, 95%, and 100% removal within 15, 30, and 90 min, respectively, at 50 ppm concentration. In a mixture of six heavy metal ions containing 10 ppm of each ion, the IT-PRGO shows a removal of 3% Zn(II), 4% Ni(II), 9% Cd(II), 21% Cu(II), 63% Pb(II), and 100% Hg(II). A monolayer adsorption behavior is suggested based on the excellent agreement of the experimental sorption isotherms with the Langmuir model. The sorption kinetics can be fitted well to a pseudo-second-order kinetic model which suggests a chemisorption mechanism via the amidinothiourea groups grafted on the reduced graphene oxide nanosheets. Desorption studies demonstrate that the IT-PRGO is easily regenerated with the desorption of the metal ions Hg(II), Cu(II), Pb(II), Cr(VI), and As(V) reaching 96%, 100%, 100%, 96%, and 100%, respectively, from their maximum sorption capacities using different eluents. The IT-PRGO is proposed as a top performing remediation adsorbent for the extraction of heavy metals from waste and polluted water.

Facile synthesis of Cu(II) impregnated biochar with enhanced adsorption activity for the removal of doxycycline hydrochloride from water

In this study, the effect factors and mechanisms of doxycycline hydrochloride (DOX) adsorption on copper nitrate modified biochar (Cu-BC) was investigated. Cu-BC absorbent was synthesized through calcination of peanut shells biomass at 450°C and then impregnation with copper nitrate. The Cu-BC has exhibited excellent sorption efficiency about 93.22% of doxycycline hydrochloride from aqueous solution, which was double higher than that of the unmodified biochar. The experimental results suggest that the adsorption efficiency of DOX on the Cu-BC is dominated by the strong complexation, electrostatic interactions between DOX molecules and the Cu-BC samples. Comprehensively considering the cost, efficiency and the application to realistic water, the Cu-BC hold the significant potential for enhancing the effectiveness to remove DOX from water.

Enhancement of As(v) adsorption from aqueous solution by a magnetic chitosan/biochar composite

In this study, a magnetic chitosan/biochar composite (MCB) was prepared successfully, and characterized by SEM, TEM, VSM, XRD, FTIR, XPS, and zeta-potential to obtain its physical and chemical properties.

Highly efficient ultrasonic-assisted removal of Hg(II) ions on graphene oxide modified with 2-pyridinecarboxaldehyde thiosemicarbazone: Adsorption isotherms and kinetics studies

A novel adsorbent, based on modifying graphene oxide (GO) chemically with 2-pyridinecarboxaldehyde thiosemicarbazone (2-PTSC) as ligand, was designed by facile process for removal of Hg(II) from aqueous solution. Characterization of the adsorbent was performed using various techniques, such as FT-IR, XRD, XPS, SEM and AFM analysis. The adsorption capacity was affected by variables such as adsorbent dosage, pH solution, Hg(2+) initial concentration and sonicating time. These variables were optimized by rotatable central composite design (CCD) under response surface methodology (RSM). The predictive model for Hg(II) adsorption was constructed and applied to find the best conditions at which the responses were maximized. In this conditions, the adsorption capacity of this adsorbent for Hg(2+) ions was calculated to be 309mgg(-1) that was higher than that of GO. Appling the ultrasound power combined with adsorption method was very efficient in shortening the removal time of Hg(2+) ions by enhancing the dispersion of adsorbent and metal ions in solution and effective interactions among them. The adsorption process was well described by second-order kinetic and Langmuir isotherm model in which the maximum adsorption capacity (Qm) was found to be 555mgg(-1) for adsorption of Hg(2+) ions over the obtained adsorbent. The performance of adsorbent was examined on the real wastewaters and confirmed the applicability of adsorbent for practical applications.

Statistical Analysis of Main and Interaction Effects on Cu(II) and Cr(VI) Decontamination by Nitrogen-Doped Magnetic Graphene Oxide

A nitrogen–doped magnetic graphene oxide (NMGO) was synthesized and applied as an adsorbent to remove Cu(II) and Cr(VI) ions from aqueous solutions. The individual and combined effects of various factors (A: pH, B: temperature, C: initial concentration of metal ions, D: CaCl₂, and E: humic acid [HA]) on the adsorption were analyzed by a 2⁵⁻¹ fractional factorial design (FFD). The results from this study indicated that the NMGO had higher adsorption capacities for Cu(II) ions than for Cr(VI) ions under most conditions, and the five selected variables affected the two adsorption processes to different extents. A, AC, and C were the very important factors and interactions for Cu(II) adsorption. For Cr(VI) adsorption, A, B, C, AB, and BC were found to be very important influencing variables. The solution pH (A) was the most important influencing factor for removal of both the ions. The main effects of A–E on the removal of Cu(II) were positive. For Cr(VI) adsorption, the main effects of A and D were negative, while B, C, and E were observed to have positive effects. The maximum adsorption capacities for Cu(II) and Cr(VI) ions over NMGO were 146.365 and 72.978 mg/g, respectively, under optimal process conditions.

Highly efficient simultaneous ultrasonic-assisted adsorption of Pb(II), Cd(II), Ni(II) and Cu (II) ions from aqueous solutions by graphene oxide modified with 2,2'-dipyridylamine: Central composite design optimization

In present work, a graphene oxide chemically modified with 2,2'-dipyridylamine (GO-DPA), was synthesized by simple, fast and low-cost process for the simultaneous adsorption of four toxic heavy metals, Pb(II), Cd(II), Ni(II) and Cu(II), from aqueous solutions. The synthesized adsorbent was characterized by FT-IR, XRD, XPS, SEM and AFM measurements. The effects of variables such as pH solution, initial ion concentrations, adsorbent dosage and sonicating time were investigated on adsorption efficiency by rotatable central composite design. The optimum conditions, specified as 8mg of adsorbent, 20mgL(-1) of each ion at pH 5 and short time of 4min led to the achievement of a high adsorption capacities. Ultrasonic power had important role in shortening the adsorption time of ions by enhancing the dispersion of adsorbent in solution. The adsorption kinetic studies and equilibrium isotherms for evaluating the mechanism of adsorption process showed a good fit to the pseudo-second order and Langmuir model, respectively. The maximum adsorption capacities (Qm) of this adsorbent were 369.749, 257.201, 180.893 and 358.824mgg(-1) for lead, cadmium, nickel and copper ions, respectively. The removal performance of adsorbent on the real wastewater samples also showed the feasibility of adsorbent for applying in industrial purposes.

Effects of single- and multi-organic acid ligands on adsorption of copper by Fe3O4/graphene oxide-supported DCTA

The Fe3O4/graphene oxide-supported 1,2-diaminocyclohexanetetraacetic acid composite (Fe3O4/GO/DCTA) was used as an adsorbent for Cu(II) removal. The effects of six organic acid ligands (formate, acetate, benzoate, oxalate, tartrate, and edetate) on the adsorption process were investigated in single- and multi-ligand systems. The results demonstrated that the adsorption processes were affected by solution pH and ionic strength. The experimental data of kinetics and isotherm followed the pseudo-second-order model and the Langmuir model, respectively. In the single-ligand systems, the presence of formate, acetate, and benzoate slightly altered the Cu(II) adsorption property, while the adsorption processes were significantly affected by the oxalate, tartrate, and edetate ligands. In the multi-ligand systems, the Cu(II) adsorption was influenced by the type and concentration of organic acid ligands. The sequence of the main effect was found to be: edetate>oxalate>benzoate>formate>tartrate>acetate, and the sequence of the two-factor interaction effect was found to be: AE (formate×tartrate)>BF (acetate×edetate)>AF (formate×edetate)>BD (acetate×oxalate)>AC (formate×benzoate)>AD (formate×oxalate)>AB (formate×acetate).
