Dual-Factor-Controlled Dynamic Precursors Enable On-Demand Thermoset Degradation and Recycling

Thermosets are well known for their advantages such as high stability and chemical resistance. However, developing sustainable thermosets with degradability and recyclability faces several principal challenges, including reconciling the desired characteristics during service with the recycling and reprocessing properties required at the end of life, establishing efficient methods for large-scale synthesis, and aligning with current manufacturing process. Here a general strategy is presented for the on-demand degradation and recycling of thermosets under mild conditions utilizing dynamic precursors with dual-factor-controlled reversibility. Specifically, dynamic triazine crosslinkers are introduced through dynamic nucleophilic aromatic substitution (SNAr) into the precursor polyols used in polyurethane (PU) synthesis. Upon removal of the catalyst and alcohol, the reversibility of SNAr is deactivated, allowing for the use of standard PU polymerization techniques such as injection molding, casting, and foaming. The resulting cyanurate-crosslinked PUs maintain high stability and diverse mechanical properties of traditional crosslinked PUs, yet offer the advantage of easy on-demand depolymerization for recycling by activating the reversibility of SNAr under specific but mild conditions-a combination of base, alcohol, and mild heat. It is envisioned that this approach, involving the pre-installation of dual-factor-controlled dynamic crosslinkers, can be broadly applied to current thermosetting plastic manufacturing processes, introducing enhanced sustainability.

Towards Sustainable Materials: A Review of Acylhydrazone Chemistry for Reversible Polymers

Transitioning towards a circular economy, extensive research has focused on dynamic covalent bonds (DCBs) to pave the way for more sustainable materials. These bonds enable debonding and rebonding on demand, as well as facilitating end-of-life recycling. Acylhydrazone/hydrazone chemistry offers a material with high stability under neutral and basic conditions making it a promising candidate for materials research, though the material is susceptible to acid degradation. However, this degradation under acidic conditions can be exploited, making it widely applicable in self-healing and biomedical fields, with potential for reprocessing and recycling. This review highlights studies exploring the reversibility of acylhydrazone/hydrazone bonds in various polymers, altering their properties, and utilizing them in applications such as self-healing, reprocessing, and recycling. The review also focuses on how the mechanical properties are affected by the presence of dynamic linkages, and methods to improve the mechanical performance.

Tetrazine-based dynamic covalent polymers as degradable extraction materials in sample preparation

BACKGROUND

Current trends in Analytical Chemistry are highly focused on the introduction of new extraction materials with a high selectivity towards the target analytes, high extraction capacity as well as sustainable characteristics. In this context, the introduction of smart materials able to respond to an external stimulus constitutes a promising approach in the field. However, investigations regarding the development of such stimuli-responsive polymers have been basically centered on their synthesis and the control of their properties, and hardly on exploiting such properties to generate polymers that, once their extraction function is fulfilled, they can be degraded into fragments with little or negligible toxicity, or even into their constituent monomers for an efficient recycling.

RESULTS

The applicability of a degradable and recyclable dynamic covalent polymer based on the use of tetrazine as a linker was assessed as sorbent for the extraction of a group of 37 persistent organic pollutants, including 10 polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons, 11 organochlorine pesticides, 14 polychlorinated biphenyls, and 2 antibacterial agents, from water samples. A microdispersive solid-phase extraction procedure was developed for the selective extraction of the target analytes, while their separation, determination, and quantification were achieved by gas chromatography coupled to mass spectrometry. The optimized procedure was validated for seawater and wastewater obtaining mean relative recovery values between 72 and 112 % for almost all the analytes, with satisfactory relative standard deviation values (<18 %). After extraction, the polymer could be degraded by adding the amino acid L-tyrosine, being possible a quantitative recovery of the initial functional monomer.

SIGNIFICANCE

A responsive polymer based on the chemical versatility of the tetrazine ring was used as sorbent in sample preparation providing excellent results, showing good physicochemical properties and the ability to be degraded after use. This polymer constitutes an interesting alternative to reduce chemical waste through the recycling of monomers, contributing to the development of more sustainable analytical methodologies.

Thermoreversible [2 + 2] Photodimers of Monothiomaleimides and Intrinsically Recyclable Covalent Networks Thereof

The development of intrinsically recyclable cross-linked materials remains challenged by the inherently unfavorable chemical equilibrium that dictates the efficiency of the reversible covalent bonding/debonding chemistry. Rather than having to (externally) manipulate the bonding equilibrium, we here introduce a new reversible chemistry platform based on monosubstituted thiomaleimides that can undergo complete and independent light-activated covalent bonding and on-demand thermal debonding above 120 °C. Specifically, repeated bonding/debonding of a small-molecule thiomaleimide [2 + 2] photodimer is demonstrated over five heat/light cycles with full conversion in both directions, thereby regenerating its initial monothiomaleimide constituents. This motivated the synthesis of multifunctional thiomaleimide reagents as precursors for the design of covalently cross-linked networks that display intrinsic switching between a monomeric and polymeric state. The resulting materials are shown to covalently dissociate and depolymerize upon heating both in solution and in bulk, thus transforming the densely photo-cross-linked material back into a viscous liquid. Temperature-regulated photorheology evidenced the intrinsic recyclability of the thiomaleimide-based thermosets during multiple cycles of UV cross-linking and thermal de-cross-linking. The thermally reversible photodimerization of thiomaleimides presents a new addition to the designer playground of dynamic polymer networks, providing interesting opportunities for the reprocessing and closed-loop recycling of covalently cross-linked materials.

Recyclable Covalent Adaptable Polystyrene Networks Using Boronates and TetraAzaADamantanes

With an ever-increasing annual production of polymers and the accumulation of polymer waste leading to progressively adverse environmental consequences, it has become important that all polymers can be efficiently recycled at the end of their life cycle. Especially thermosets are intrinsically difficult to recycle because of their permanent covalent cross-links. A possible solution is to switch from using thermosets to covalent adaptable networks, sparking the rapid development of novel dynamic covalent chemistries and derived polymer materials. Next to development of these innovative polymer materials, there is also an evident advantage of merging the virtues of covalent adaptable networks with the proven material properties of widely used commodity plastics, by introducing dynamic covalent bonds in these original thermoplastic materials to obtain recyclable thermosets. Here we report the synthesis and characterization of a polystyrene polymer, functionalized with TetraAzaADamantanes and cross-linked with dynamic covalent boronic esters. The material properties were characterized for different degrees of cross-linking. The materials showed good solvent resistance with a high remaining insoluble fraction. In line with the typical behavior of traditional covalent adaptable networks, the prepared polystyrene-based boronate-TetraAzaADamantane materials were able to undergo stress relaxation. The material relaxation was also shown to be tunable by mixing with an acid catalyst. Lastly, the materials could be recycled at least 2 times.

Carbon Fiber-Based Vitrimer Composites: A Path toward Current Research That Is High-Performing, Useful, and Sustainable

In the polymeric material industry, thermosets and related composites have played a substantial role in the production of rubber and plastics. One important subset of these is thermoset composites with carbon reinforcement. The incorporation of carbon fillers and fibers gives polymeric materials improved electrical and mechanical properties, among other benefits. However, the covalently crosslinked network of thermosets presents significant challenges for recycling and reprocessing because of its intractable nature. The introduction of vitrimer materials opens a new avenue to produce biodegradable and recyclable thermosets. Carbon-reinforced vitrimer composites are pursued for high-performance, long-lasting materials with attractive physical properties, the ability to be recycled and processed, and other features that respond uniquely to stimuli. The development of carbon-reinforced vitrimer composites over the last few years is summarized in this article. First, an overview of vitrimers and the methods used to prepare carbon fiber-reinforced vitrimer composites is provided. Because of the vitrimer nature of such composites, reprocessing, healing, and recycling are viable ways to greatly extend their service life; these approaches are thoroughly explained and summarized. The conclusion is our prediction for developing carbon-based vitrimer composites.

Mechanical Properties and Recyclability of Fiber Reinforced Polyester Composites

Fiber reinforced polymer composites (FRPs) are valuable construction materials owing to their strength, durability, and design flexibility; however, conventional FRPs utilize petroleum-based polymer matrices with limited recyclability. Furthermore, fiber reinforcements are made from nonrenewable feedstocks, through expensive and energy intensive processes, making recovery and reuse advantageous. Thus, FRPs that use biobased and degradable or reprocessable matrices would enable a more sustainable product, as both components can be recovered and reused. We previously developed a family of degradable and reprocessable cross-linked polyesters from bioderived cyclic esters (l-lactide, δ-valerolactone, and ε-caprolactone) copolymerized with a bis(1,3-dioxolan-4-one) cross-linker. We now incorporate these networks into FRPs and demonstrate degradability of the matrix into tartaric acid and oligomers, enabling recovery and reuse of the fiber reinforcement. Furthermore, the effect of varying comonomer structure, catalyst, reinforcement type, and lay-up method on mechanical properties of the resultant FRPs is explored. The FRPs produced have tensile strengths of up to 202 MPa and Young's moduli up to 25 GPa, promising evidence that sustainable FRPs can rival the mechanical properties of conventional high performance FRPs.

Tuning Reprocessing Temperature of Aliphatic Polyurethane Networks by Alkoxyamine Selection

Recent studies have shown that the largest employed thermoset family, polyurethanes (PUs), has great potential to be reprocessed due to the dynamic behavior of carbamate linkage. However, it requires high temperatures, especially in the case of aliphatic PUs, which causes side reactions besides the desired exchange reaction. To facilitate the reprocessing of aliphatic PUs, in this work, we have explored the dynamic potential of alkoxyamine bonds in PU networks to facilitate the reprocessing under mild conditions considering their fast recombination ability. Taking advantage of the structural effect of the nitroxide and alkyl radicals on the dissociation energy, two different alkoxyamine-based diols have been designed and synthesized to generate PU networks. Our study shows that replacing 50 mol % of a nondynamic diol chain extender with these dynamic blocks boosts the relaxation times of the networks, enabling reprocessing at temperatures as low as 80 °C.

New Advances in Covalent Network Polymers via Dynamic Covalent Chemistry

Covalent network polymers, as materials composed of atoms interconnected by covalent bonds in a continuous network, are known for their thermal and chemical stability. Over the past two decades, these materials have undergone significant transformations, gaining properties such as malleability, environmental responsiveness, recyclability, crystallinity, and customizable porosity, enabled by the development and integration of dynamic covalent chemistry (DCvC). In this review, we explore the innovative realm of covalent network polymers by focusing on the recent advances achieved through the application of DCvC. We start by examining the history and fundamental principles of DCvC, detailing its inception and core concepts and noting its key role in reversible covalent bond formation. Then the reprocessability of covalent network polymers enabled by DCvC is thoroughly discussed, starting from the significant milestones that marked the evolution of these polymers and progressing to their current trends and applications. The influence of DCvC on the crystallinity of covalent network polymers is then reviewed, covering their bond diversity, synthesis techniques, and functionalities. In the concluding section, we address the current challenges faced in the field of covalent network polymers and speculates on potential future directions.

An electrochemically responsive B-O dynamic bond to switch photoluminescence of boron-nitrogen-doped polyaromatics

Boron-doped polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons exhibit excellent optical properties, and regulating their photophysical processes is a powerful strategy to understand the luminescence mechanism and develop new materials and applications. Herein, an electrochemically responsive B-O dynamic coordination bond is proposed, and used to regulate the photophysical processes of boron-nitrogen-doped polyaromatic hydrocarbons. The formation of the B-O coordination bond under a suitable voltage is confirmed by experiments and theoretical calculations, and B-O coordination bond can be broken back to the initial state under opposite voltage. The whole process is accompanied by reversible changes in photophysical properties. Further, electrofluorochromic devices are successfully prepared based on the above electrochemically responsive coordination bond. The success and harvest of this exploration are beneficial to understand the luminescence mechanism of boron-nitrogen-doped polyaromatic hydrocarbons, and provide ideas for design of dynamic covalent bonds and broaden material types and applications.

β-Triketones as Reactive Handles for Polymer Diversification via Dynamic Catalyst-Free Diketoenamine Click Chemistry

The spontaneous condensation of amines with β-triketones (TK), forming β,β'-diketoenamines (DKE) and releasing water as the sole byproduct, exhibits many of the hallmarks of "click" reactions. Such characteristics render TKs as a highly advantageous platform for efficient polymer diversification, even in biological contexts. Leveraging reversible addition-fragmentation chain transfer (RAFT) and photoiniferter polymerization of novel TK-containing vinylic monomers, we synthesized polymers containing pendent TKs with excellent control of molecular weights, even in excess of 106 g mol-1. Under mild, catalyst-free conditions, poly(β-triketone methacrylate) could be modified with a diverse scope of amines containing a plethora of functional groups. The high efficiency of this functionalization approach was further emphasized when grafting-to with poly(ethylene glycol)-amine resulting in bottlebrushes with molecular weights reaching 2.0 × 107 g mol-1. Critically, while the formed DKE linkages are stable under ambient conditions, they undergo catalyst-free, dynamic transamination at elevated temperatures, paving the way for associative covalent adaptable networks. Overall, we introduce pendent triketone moieties into methacrylate and acrylamide polymers, establishing a novel postpolymerization modification technique that facilitates catalyst-free ligation of amines under highly permissible conditions.

Dynamic Covalent Chemistry of Enamine-Ones: Exploring Tunable Reactivity in Vitrimeric Polymers and Covalent Organic Frameworks

Dynamic covalent chemistry (DCC) has revolutionized the field of polymer science by offering new opportunities for the synthesis, processability, and recyclability of polymers as well as in the development of new materials with interesting properties such as vitrimers and covalent organic frameworks (COFs). Many DCC linkages have been explored for this purpose, but recently, enamine-ones have proven to be promising dynamic linkages because of their facile reversible transamination reactions under thermodynamic control. Their high stability, stimuli-responsive properties, and tunable kinetics make them promising dynamic cross-linkers in network polymers. Given the rapid developments in the field in recent years, this review provides a critical and up-to-date overview of recent developments in enamine-one chemistry, including factors that control their dynamics. The focus of the review will be on the utility of enamine-ones in designing a variety of processable and self-healable polymers with important applications in vitrimers and recyclable closed-loop polymers. The use of enamine-one linkages in crystalline polymers, known as COFs and their applications are also summarized. Finally, we provide an outlook for future developments in this field.

Sustainable Vat Photopolymerization-Based 3D-Printing through Dynamic Covalent Network Photopolymers

Vat photopolymerization (VPP) based three-dimensional (3D) printing, including stereolithography (SLA) and digital light projection (DLP), is known for producing intricate, high-precision prototypes with superior mechanical properties. However, the challenge lies in the non-recyclability of covalently crosslinked thermosets used in these printing processes, limiting the sustainable utilization of printed prototypes. This review paper examines the recently explored avenue of VPP 3D-printed dynamic covalent network (DCN) polymers, which enable reversible crosslinks and allow for the reprocessing of printed prototypes, promoting sustainability. These reversible crosslinks facilitate the rearrangement of crosslinked polymers, providing printed polymers with chemical/physical recyclability, self-healing capabilities, and degradability. While various mechanisms for DCN polymer systems are explored, this paper focuses solely on photocurable polymers to highlight their potential to revolutionize the sustainability of VPP 3D printing.

Thermoswitchable catalysis to inhibit and promote plastic flow in vitrimers

Acid-base catalysis is a common strategy to induce covalent bond exchanges in dynamic polymer networks. Strong acids or strong bases can promote rapid network rearrangements, and are simultaneously preferred catalysts for chemical reactions where maximum efficiency at the lowest possible temperature is aimed for. However, within the context of dynamic polymer networks, the incorporation of highly active catalysts can negatively affect the longer term application potential. Network dynamicity can diminish through catalyst ageing or quenching and highly active catalysts may prematurely activate bond exchanges, leading to dimensional instability and thus low creep resistance of the polymer networks. Herein, we present several examples where we explicitly explored weak acids (carboxylic acids) as catalysts for dynamic bond exchanges, using vinylogous urethanes (VU) as a well-understood protic acid catalysed vitrimer chemistry. Surprisingly, we have found that the sought-after long-term stability offered by a weak acid does not necessarily bring lower activity at high temperature. In fact, the weak acids show a remarkable thermoswitchable catalytic behaviour, going from an inactive hydrogen bonded state to an active state where the polymer matrix is protonated, with a profound impact on the network reactivity and rheology. Carboxylic acids with different electronic or steric environments show clear reactivity trends and their fine-tuning resulted in the most thermally responsive VU vitrimers studied to date. Our findings point out that catalyst choice and design for vitrimers is only poorly informed by catalyst performance in more traditional chemical reactions (in solvent), and that a more tailored catalyst design holds great promise for the field of vitrimers.

Molecular Simulation of Covalent Adaptable Networks and Vitrimers: A Review

Covalent adaptable networks and vitrimers are novel polymers with dynamic reversible bond exchange reactions for crosslinks, enabling them to modulate their properties between those of thermoplastics and thermosets. They have been gathering interest as materials for their recycling and self-healing properties. In this review, we discuss different molecular simulation efforts that have been used over the last decade to investigate and understand the nanoscale and molecular behaviors of covalent adaptable networks and vitrimers. In particular, molecular dynamics, Monte Carlo, and a hybrid of molecular dynamics and Monte Carlo approaches have been used to model the dynamic bond exchange reaction, which is the main mechanism of interest since it controls both the mechanical and rheological behaviors. The molecular simulation techniques presented yield sufficient results to investigate the structure and dynamics as well as the mechanical and rheological responses of such dynamic networks. The benefits of each method have been highlighted. The use of other tools such as theoretical models and machine learning has been included. We noticed, amongst the most prominent results, that stress relaxes as the bond exchange reaction happens, and that at temperatures higher than the glass transition temperature, the self-healing properties are better since more bond BERs are observed. The lifetime of dynamic covalent crosslinks follows, at moderate to high temperatures, an Arrhenius-like temperature dependence. We note the modeling of certain properties like the melt viscosity with glass transition temperature and the topology freezing transition temperature according to a behavior ruled by either the Williams-Landel-Ferry equation or the Arrhenius equation. Discrepancies between the behavior in dissociative and associative covalent adaptable networks are discussed. We conclude by stating which material parameters and atomistic factors, at the nanoscale, have not yet been taken into account and are lacking in the current literature.

Mechanically Adaptive Polymers Constructed from Dynamic Coordination Equilibria

Designing materials capable of adapting their mechanical properties in response to external stimuli is the key to preventing failure and extending their service life. However, existing mechanically adaptive polymers are hindered by limitations such as inadequate load-bearing capacity, difficulty in achieving reversible changes, high cost, and a lack of multiple responsiveness. Herein, we address these challenges using dynamic coordination bonds. A new type of mechanically adaptive material with both rate- and temperature-responsiveness was developed. Owing to the stimuli-responsiveness of the coordination equilibria, the prepared polymers, PBMBD-Fe and PBMBD-Co, exhibit mechanically adaptive properties, including temperature-sensitive strength modulation and rate-dependent impact hardening. Benefitting from the dynamic nature of the coordination bonds, the polymers exhibited impressive energy dissipation, damping capacity (loss factors of 1.15 and 2.09 at 1.0 Hz), self-healing, and 3D printing abilities, offering durable and customizable impact resistance and protective performance. The development of impact-resistant materials with comprehensive properties has potential applications in the sustainable and intelligent protection fields.

Photoswitchable Cascades for Allosteric and Bidirectional Control over Covalent Bonds and Assemblies

Studies of complex systems and emerging properties to mimic biosystems are at the forefront of chemical research. Dynamic multistep cascades, especially those exhibiting allosteric regulation, are challenging. Herein, we demonstrate a versatile platform of photoswitchable covalent cascades toward remote and bidirectional control of reversible covalent bonds and ensuing assemblies. The relay of a photochromic switch, keto-enol equilibrium, and ring-chain equilibrium allows light-mediated reversible allosteric structural changes. The accompanying distinct reactivity further enables photoswitchable dynamic covalent bonding and release of substrates bidirectionally through alternating two wavelengths of light, essentially realizing light-mediated signaling cycles. The downfall of energy by covalent bond formation/scission upon photochemical reactions offers the driving force for the controlled direction of the cascade. To show the molecular diversity, photoswitchable on-demand assembly/disassembly of covalent polymers, including structurally reconfigurable polymers, was realized. This work achieves photoswitchable allosteric regulation of covalent architectures within dynamic multistep cascades, which has rarely been reported before. The results resemble allosteric control within biological signaling networks and should set the stage for many endeavors, such as dynamic assemblies, molecular motors, responsive polymers, and intelligent materials.

Dynamic Chemistry Toolbox for Advanced Sustainable Materials

Developing dynamic chemistry for polymeric materials offers chemical solutions to solve key problems associated with current plastics. Mechanical performance and dynamic function are equally important in material design because the former determines the application scope and the latter enables chemical recycling and hence sustainability. However, it is a long-term challenge to balance the subtle trade-off between mechanical robustness and dynamic properties in a single material. The rise of dynamic chemistry, including supramolecular and dynamic covalent chemistry, provides many opportunities and versatile molecular tools for designing constitutionally dynamic materials that can adapt, repair, and recycle. Facing the growing social need for developing advanced sustainable materials without compromising properties, recent progress showing how the toolbox of dynamic chemistry can be explored to enable high-performance sustainable materials by molecular engineering strategies is discussed here. The state of the art and recent milestones are summarized and discussed, followed by an outlook toward future opportunities and challenges present in this field.

Practical Applications of Self-Healing Polymers Beyond Mechanical and Electrical Recovery

Self-healing polymeric materials, which can repair physical damage, offer promising prospects for protective applications across various industries. Although prolonged durability and resource conservation are key advantages, focusing solely on mechanical recovery may limit the market potential of these materials. The unique physical properties of self-healing polymers, such as interfacial reduction, seamless connection lines, temperature/pressure responses, and phase transitions, enable a multitude of innovative applications. In this perspective, the diverse applications of self-healing polymers beyond their traditional mechanical strength are emphasized and their potential in various sectors such as food packaging, damage-reporting, radiation shielding, acoustic conservation, biomedical monitoring, and tissue regeneration is explored. With regards to the commercialization challenges, including scalability, robustness, and performance degradation under extreme conditions, strategies to overcome these limitations and promote successful industrialization are discussed. Furthermore, the potential impacts of self-healing materials on future research directions, encompassing environmental sustainability, advanced computational techniques, integration with emerging technologies, and tailoring materials for specific applications are examined. This perspective aims to inspire interdisciplinary approaches and foster the adoption of self-healing materials in various real-life settings, ultimately contributing to the development of next-generation materials.

Functional Zwitterionic Polyurethanes: State-of-the-Art Review

Recent advancements in bioengineering and medical devices have been greatly influenced and dominated by synthetic polymers, particularly polyurethanes (PUs). PUs offer customizable mechanical properties and long-term stability, but their inherent hydrophobic nature poses challenges in practically biological application processes, such as interface high friction, strong protein adsorption, and thrombosis. To address these issues, surface modifications of PUs for generating functionally hydrophilic layers have received widespread attention, but the durability of generated surface functionality is poor due to irreversible mechanical wear or biodegradation. As a result, numerous researchers have investigated bulk modification techniques to incorporate zwitterionic polymers or groups onto the main or side chains of PUs, thereby improving their hydrophilicity and biocompatibility. This comprehensive review presents an extensive overview of notable zwitterionic PUs (ZPUs), including those based on phosphorylcholine, sulfobetaine, and carboxybetaine. The review explores their wide range of biomedical applications, from blood-contacting devices to antibacterial coatings, fouling-resistant marine coatings, separation membranes, lubricated surfaces, and shape memory and self-healing materials. Lastly, the review summarizes the challenges and future prospects of ZPUs in biological applications.

Vinylogous Urea-Urethane Vitrimers: Accelerating and Inhibiting Network Dynamics through Hydrogen Bonding

Vinylogous urethane (VUO ) based polymer networks are widely used as catalyst-free vitrimers that show rapid covalent bond exchange at elevated temperatures. In solution, vinylogous ureas (VUN ) undergo much faster bond exchange than VUO and are highly dynamic at room temperature. However, this difference in reactivity is not observed in their respective dynamic polymer networks, as VUO and VUN vitrimers prepared herein with very similar macromolecular architectures show comparable stress relaxation and creep behavior. However, by using mixtures of VUO and VUN linkages within the same network, the dynamic reactions can be accelerated by an order of magnitude. The results can be rationalized by the effect of intermolecular hydrogen bonding, which is absent in VUO vitrimers, but is very pronounced for vinylogous urea moieties. At low concentrations of VUN , these hydrogen bonds act as catalysts for covalent bond exchange, while at high concentration, they provide a pervasive vinylogous urea - urethane (VU) network of strong non-covalent interactions, giving rise to phase separation and inhibiting polymer chain dynamics. This offers a straightforward design principle for dynamic polymer materials, showing at the same time the possible additive and synergistic effects of supramolecular and dynamic covalent polymer networks.

External Stimuli-Induced Welding of Dynamic Cross-Linked Polymer Networks

Thermosets have been crucial in modern engineering for decades, finding applications in various industries. Welding cross-linked components are essential in the processing of thermosets for repairing damaged areas or fabricating complex structures. However, the inherent insolubility and infusibility of thermoset materials, attributed to their three-dimensional network structure, pose challenges to welding development. Incorporating dynamic chemical bonds into highly cross-linked networks bridges the gap between thermosets and thermoplastics presenting a promising avenue for innovative welding techniques. External stimuli, including thermal, light, solvent, pH, electric, and magnetic fields, induce dynamic bonds' breakage and reformation, rendering the cross-linked network malleable. This plasticity facilitates the seamless linkage of two parts to an integral whole, attracting significant attention for potential applications in soft actuators, smart devices, solid batteries, and more. This review provides a comprehensive overview of dynamic bonds employed in welding dynamic cross-linked networks (DCNs). It extensively discusses the classification and fabrication of common epoxy DCNs and acrylate DCNs. Notably, recent advancements in welding processes based on DCNs under external stimuli are detailed, focusing on the welding dynamics among covalent adaptable networks (CANs).

Impact of doping on the mechanical properties of conjugated polymers

Conjugated polymers exhibit a unique portfolio of electrical and electrochemical behavior, which - paired with the mechanical properties that are typical for macromolecules - make them intriguing candidates for a wide range of application areas from wearable electronics to bioelectronics. However, the degree of oxidation or reduction of the polymer can strongly impact the mechanical response and thus must be considered when designing flexible or stretchable devices. This tutorial review first explores how the chain architecture, processing as well as the resulting nano- and microstructure impact the rheological and mechanical properties. In addition, different methods for the mechanical characterization of thin films and bulk materials such as fibers are summarized. Then, the review discusses how chemical and electrochemical doping alter the mechanical properties in terms of stiffness and ductility. Finally, the mechanical response of (doped) conjugated polymers is discussed in the context of (1) organic photovoltaics, representing thin-film devices with a relatively low charge-carrier density, (2) organic thermoelectrics, where chemical doping is used to realize thin films or bulk materials with a high doping level, and (3) organic electrochemical transistors, where electrochemical doping allows high charge-carrier densities to be reached, albeit accompanied by significant swelling. In the future, chemical and electrochemical doping may not only allow modulation and optimization of the electrical and electrochemical behavior of conjugated polymers, but also facilitate the design of materials with a tunable mechanical response.

Accessing pluripotent materials through tempering of dynamic covalent polymer networks

Pluripotency, which is defined as a system not fixed as to its developmental potentialities, is typically associated with biology and stem cells. Inspired by this concept, we report synthetic polymers that act as a single "pluripotent" feedstock and can be differentiated into a range of materials that exhibit different mechanical properties, from hard and brittle to soft and extensible. To achieve this, we have exploited dynamic covalent networks that contain labile, dynamic thia-Michael bonds, whose extent of bonding can be thermally modulated and retained through tempering, akin to the process used in metallurgy. In addition, we show that the shape memory behavior of these materials can be tailored through tempering and that these materials can be patterned to spatially control mechanical properties.

Next-Generation Vitrimers Design through Theoretical Understanding and Computational Simulations

Vitrimers are an innovative class of polymers that boast a remarkable fusion of mechanical and dynamic features, complemented by the added benefit of end-of-life recyclability. This extraordinary blend of properties makes them highly attractive for a variety of applications, such as the automotive sector, soft robotics, and the aerospace industry. At their core, vitrimer materials consist of crosslinked covalent networks that have the ability to dynamically reorganize in response to external factors, including temperature changes, pressure variations, or shifts in pH levels. In this review, the aim is to delve into the latest advancements in the theoretical understanding and computational design of vitrimers. The review begins by offering an overview of the fundamental principles that underlie the behavior of these materials, encompassing their structures, dynamic behavior, and reaction mechanisms. Subsequently, recent progress in the computational design of vitrimers is explored, with a focus on the employment of molecular dynamics (MD)/Monte Carlo (MC) simulations and density functional theory (DFT) calculations. Last, the existing challenges and prospective directions for this field are critically analyzed, emphasizing the necessity for additional theoretical and computational advancements, coupled with experimental validation.

The Kinetic Study of the Influence of Common Modifiers on the Curing Process of Epoxy Vitrimers

An analysis of the influence of common modifiers on the kinetics of the curing process of epoxy-anhydride vitrimers was carried out. As common modifiers to enhance the "vitrimeric" nature of the material, zinc acetylacetonate as a transesterification catalyst and glycerol as a modifier of hydroxyl group content were chosen. The curing process of all obtained compositions was studied by differential scanning calorimetry (DSC) followed by the application of the isoconversional approach. It was shown that additives significantly affect the curing process. The resulting cured polymers were shown to be chemically recyclable by dissolution in the mixture of ethylene glycol and N-methylpirrolidone in a volume ratio of nine to one. The introduction of both zinc acethylacetonate and glycerol to the neat formulation led to a decrease in the dissolution time by 85.7% (from 35 h for the neat epoxy-anhydride formulation to 5 h for the modified formulation). In order to show the opportunity of the secondary use of recyclates, the mixtures based on the basic composition containing 10 wt. % of secondary polymers were also studied. The introduction of a recycled material to neat composition led to the same curing behavior as glycerol-containing systems.

Circular Polydiketoenamine Elastomers with Exceptional Creep Resistance via Multivalent Cross-Linker Design

Elastomers are widely used in textiles, foam, and rubber, yet they are rarely recycled due to the difficulty in deconstructing polymer chains to reusable monomers. Introducing reversible bonds in these materials offers prospects for improving their circularity; however, concomitant bond exchange permits creep, which is undesirable. Here, we show how to architect dynamic covalent polydiketoenamine (PDK) elastomers prepared from polyetheramine and triketone monomers, not only for energy-efficient circularity, but also for outstanding creep resistance at high temperature. By appending polytopic cross-linking functionality at the chain ends of flexible polyetheramines, we reduced creep from >200% to less than 1%, relative to monotopic controls, producing mechanically robust and stable elastomers and carbon-reinforced rubbers that are readily depolymerized to pure monomer in high yield. We also found that the multivalent chain end was essential for ensuring complete PDK deconstruction. Mapping reaction coordinates in energy and space across a range of potential conformations reveals the underpinnings of this behavior, which involves preorganization of the transition state for diketoenamine bond acidolysis when a tertiary amine is also nearby.

Probing the Solubility of Imine-Based Covalent Adaptable Networks

Covalent adaptable networks (CANs) are polymer materials that are covalently cross-linked via dynamic covalent bonds. The cross-linked polymer network is generally expected to be insoluble, as is seen for traditional thermosets. However, in recent years, it has become apparent that-under certain conditions-both dissociative and associative CANs can be dissolved in a good solvent. For some applications (e.g., those that require long-term (chemical) stability), the solubility of CANs can be problematic. However, many forget that (selective) solubility of CANs can also be applied advantageously, for example, in recycling or modification of the materials. In this work, we provide results and insights related to the tunable solubility of imine-based CANs. We observed that selected CANs could be fully dissolved in a good solvent without observing dissociation of imines. Only in an acidic environment (partial) dissociation of imines was observed, which could be reverted to the associated state by addition of a base. By adjusting the network composition, we were able to either facilitate or hamper solubility as well as control the size of the dissolved particles. DLS showed that the size of dissolved polymer particles decreased at lower concentrations. Similarly, decreasing cross-linking density resulted in smaller particles. Last, we showed that we could use the solubility of the CANs as a means for chemical recycling and postpolymerization modification. The combination of our studies with existing literature provides a better understanding of the solubility of CANs and their applications as recyclable thermosets.

C-H Functionalization of Polyolefins to Access Reprocessable Polyolefin Thermosets

Upcycling plastic waste into reprocessable materials with performance-advantaged properties would contribute to the development of a circular plastics economy. Here, we modify branched polyolefins and postconsumer polyethylene through a versatile C-H functionalization approach using thiosulfonates as a privileged radical group transfer functionality. Cross-linking the functionalized polyolefins with polytopic amines provided dynamically cross-linked polyolefin networks enabled by associative bond exchange of diketoenamine functionality. A combination of resonant soft X-ray scattering and grazing incidence X-ray scattering revealed hierarchical phase morphology in which diketoenamine-rich microdomains phase-separate within amorphous regions between polyolefin crystallites. The combination of dynamic covalent cross-links and microphase separation results in useful and improved mechanical properties, including a ∼4.5-fold increase in toughness, a reduction in creep deformation at temperatures relevant to use, and high-temperature structural stability compared to the parent polyolefin. The dynamic nature of diketoenamine cross-links provides stress relaxation at elevated temperatures, which enabled iterative reprocessing of the dynamic covalent polymer network with little cycle-to-cycle property fade. The ability to convert polyolefin waste into a reprocessable thermoformable material with attractive thermomechanical properties provides additional optionality for upcycling to enable future circularity.

Thermally Responsive Selenide-containing Materials Based on Transalkylation of Selenonium Salts

Covalent adaptable networks (CANs) possess unique properties as a result of their internal dynamic bonds, such as self-healing and reprocessing abilities. In this study, we report a thermally responsive C-Se dynamic covalent chemistry (DCC) that relies on the transalkylation exchange between selenonium salts and selenides, which undergo a fast transalkylation reaction in the absence of any catalyst. Additionally, we demonstrate the presence of a dissociative mechanism in the absence of selenide groups. After incorporation of this DCC into selenide-containing polymer materials, it was observed that the cross-linked networks display varying dynamic exchange rates when using different alkylation reagents, suggesting that the reprocessing capacity of selenide-containing materials can be regulated. Also, by incorporating selenonium salts into polymer materials, we observed that the materials exhibited good healing ability at elevated temperatures as well as excellent solvent resistance at ambient temperature. This novel dynamic covalent chemistry thus provides a straightforward method for the healing and reprocessing of selenide-containing materials.

Covalent Adaptable Networks through Dynamic N,S-Acetal Chemistry: Toward Recyclable CO2-Based Thermosets

Finding new chemistry platforms for easily recyclable polymers has become a key challenge to face environmental concerns and the growing plastics demand. Here, we report a dynamic chemistry between CO2-sourced alkylidene oxazolidones and thiols, delivering circular non-isocyanate polyurethane networks embedding N,S-acetal bonds. The production of oxazolidone monomers from CO2 is facile and scalable starting from cheap reagents. Their copolymerization with a polythiol occurs under mild conditions in the presence of a catalytic amount of acid to furnish polymer networks. The polymer structure is easily tuned by virtue of monomer design, translating into a wide panel of mechanical properties similar to commodity plastics, ranging from PDMS-like elastomers [with Young's modulus (E) of 2.9 MPa and elongation at break (εbreak) of 159%] to polystyrene-like rigid plastics (with E = 2400 MPa, εbreak = 3%). The highly dissociative nature of the N,S-acetal bonds is demonstrated and exploited to offer three different recycling scenarios to the thermosets: (1) mechanical recycling by compression molding, extrusion, or injection molding─with multiple recycling (at least 10 times) without any material property deterioration, (2) chemical recycling through depolymerization, followed by repolymerization, also applicable to composites, and (3) upcycling of two different oxazolidone-based thermosets into a single one with distinct properties. This work highlights a new facile and scalable chemical platform for designing highly dynamic polymer networks containing elusive oxazolidone motifs. The versatility of this chemistry shows great potential for the preparation of materials (including composites) of tuneable structures and properties, with multiple end-of-life scenarios.

Thermally Reversible Organocatalyst for the Accelerated Reprocessing of Dynamic Networks with Creep Resistance

The industrial implementation of covalent adaptable networks hinges on the delicate task of achieving rapid bond exchange activation at specific temperatures while ensuring a sufficiently slow exchange at working temperatures to avoid irreversible deformation. In this pursuit, latent catalysts offer a potential solution, allowing for spatiotemporal control of dynamic exchange in vitrimer networks. However, the irreversible nature of their activation has led to undesired creep deformation after multiple cycles of reprocessing. In this work, we demonstrate that a tetraphenylborate tetramethyl guanidinium salt (TPB:TMG) undergoes a reversible thermal dissociation, releasing free TMG. This thermally reversible organocatalyst can be readily introduced as an additive in industrially relevant materials such as disulfide-containing polyurethane networks (PU) that undergo disulfide exchange in the presence of a base catalyst. In contrast with a free-base-catalyzed process, we demonstrate the dual benefit of adding the thermally reversible TPB:TMG in preventing creep at lower temperatures and also enabling reprocessability of disulfide-containing PU networks at elevated temperatures. The remarkable reversibility of this thermally activated catalyst allows for multiple reprocessing cycles while effectively maintaining a creep-free state at service temperature.

Graphene oxide-based large-area dynamic covalent interfaces

Dynamic materials, being capable of reversible structural adaptation in response to the variation of external surroundings, have experienced significant advancements in the past several decades. In particular, dynamic covalent materials (DCMs), where the dynamic covalent bonds (DCBs) can reversibly break and reform under defined conditions, present superior dynamic characteristics, such as self-adaptivity, self-healing and shape memory. However, the dynamic characteristics of DCBs are mainly limited within the length scale of covalent bonds, due to the local position exchange or the inter-distance variation between the chemical compositions involved in the reversible covalent reactions. In this minireview, a discussion regarding the realization of long-range migration of chemical compositions along the interfaces of graphene oxide (GO)-based materials via the spatially connected and consecutive occurrence of DCB-based reversible covalent reactions is presented, and the interfaces are termed "large-area dynamic covalent interfaces (LDCIs)". The effective strategies, including water adsorption, interfacial curvature and metal-substrate support, as well as the potential applications of LDCIs in water dissociation and humidity sensing are summarized. Additionally, we also give an outlook on potential strategies to realize LDCIs on other 2D carbon-based materials, including the interfacial morphology and periodic element doping. This minireview provides insights into the realization of LDCIs on a wider range of 2D materials, and offers a theoretical perspective for advancing materials with long-range dynamic characteristics and improved performance, including controlled drug delivery/release and high-efficiency (bio)sensing.

On-Demand Activation of Transesterification by Chemical Amplification in Dynamic Thiol-Ene Photopolymers

Chemical amplification is a well-established concept in photoresist technology, wherein one photochemical event leads to a cascade of follow-up reactions that facilitate a controlled change in the solubility of a polymer. Herein, we transfer this concept to dynamic polymer networks to liberate both catalyst and functional groups required for bond exchange reactions under UV irradiation. For this, we exploit a photochemically generated acid to catalyse a deprotection reaction of an acid-labile tert-butoxycarbonyl group, which is employed to mask the hydroxy groups of a vinyl monomer. At the same time, the released acid serves as a catalyst for thermo-activated transesterifications between the deprotected hydroxy and ester moieties. Introduced in an orthogonally cured (450 nm) thiol-click photopolymer, this approach allows for a spatio-temporally controlled activation of bond exchange reactions, which is crucial in light of the creep resistance versus reflow ability trade-off of dynamic polymer networks.

Reprocessable Polyurethane Foams Using Acetoacetyl-Formed Amides

Like any other thermosetting material, polyurethane foams (PUFs) contain permanent cross-links that hinder their reprocessability and make their recyclability a tedious and environmentally unfriendly process. Herein, we introduce acetoacetyl-formed amides, formed by the reaction of isocyanates with acetoacetate groups, as dynamic units in the backbone of PUFs. By extensive variation of the foam composition, optimum parameters have been found to produce malleable foams above temperatures of 130 °C, without the requirement of any solvent during the foaming process. The PU cross-linked material can be compression-molded at least three times, giving rise to PU elastomers and thus maintaining a cross-linked network structure. Characterization of the original foams shows comparable properties to standard PUFs, for example, having a density of 32 kg/m3, while they show similar chemical and thermal properties upon reprocessing to strong PU elastomers, exhibiting Tg ranging from -42 to -48 °C. This research provides a straightforward method to produce thermally reprocessable PUFs as a promising pathway to address the recycling issues of end-of-life foams.

Dual reactivity based dynamic covalent chemistry: mechanisms and applications

Dynamic covalent chemistry (DCC) focuses on the reversible formation, breakage, and exchange of covalent bonds and assemblies, setting a bridge between irreversible organic synthesis and supramolecular chemistry and finding wide utility. In order to enhance structural and functional diversity and complexity, different types of dynamic covalent reactions (DCRs) are placed in one vessel, encompassing orthogonal DCC without crosstalk and communicating DCC with a shared reactive functional group. As a means of adding tautomers, widespread in chemistry, to interconnected DCRs and combining the features of orthogonal and communicating DCRs, a concept of dual reactivity based DCC and underlying structural and mechanistic insights are summarized. The manipulation of the distinct reactivity of structurally diverse ring-chain tautomers allows selective activation and switching of reaction pathways and corresponding DCRs (C-N, C-O, and C-S) and assemblies. The coupling with photoswitches further enables light-mediated formation and scission of multiple types of reversible covalent bonds. To showcase the capability of dual reactivity based DCC, the versatile applications in dynamic polymers and luminescent materials are presented, paving the way for future functionalization studies.

Exploiting the Use of the Decarboxylative S-Alkylation Reaction to Produce Self-Blowing, Recyclable Polycarbonate Foams

Polymeric foams are widely used in many industrial applications due to their light weight and superior thermal, mechanical, and optical properties. Currently, increasing research efforts is being directed towards the development of greener foam formulations that circumvent the use of isocyanates/blowing agents that are commonly used in the production of foam materials. Here, a straightforward, one-pot method is presented to prepare self-blown polycarbonate (PC) foams by exploiting the (decarboxylative) S-alkylation reaction for in situ generation of the blowing agent (CO2 ). The concomitant formation of a reactive alcohol intermediate promotes a cascade ring-opening polymerization of the cyclic carbonates to yield a cross-linked polymer network. It is shown that these hydroxyl-functionalized polycarbonate-based foams can be easily recycled into films through thermal compression molding. Furthermore, it is demonstrated that complete hydrolytic degradation of the foams is possible, thus offering the potential for zero-waste materials. This straightforward and versatile process broadens the scope of isocyanate-free, self-foaming materials, opening a new pathway for next-generation environmentally friendly foams.

Dynamic Aliphatic Polyester Elastomers Crosslinked with Aliphatic Dianhydrides

Chemically crosslinked elastomers are a class of polymeric materials with properties that render them useful as adhesives, sealants, and in other engineering applications. Poly(γ-methyl-ε-caprolactone) (PγMCL) is a hydrolytically degradable and compostable aliphatic polyester that can be biosourced and exhibits competitive mechanical properties to traditional elastomers when chemically crosslinked. A typical limitation of chemically crosslinked elastomers is that they cannot be reprocessed; however, the incorporation of dynamic covalent bonds can allow for bonds to reversibly break and reform under an external stimulus, usually heat. In this work, we study the dynamic behavior and mechanical properties of PγMCL elastomers synthesized from aliphatic dianhydride crosslinkers. The crosslinked elastomers in this work were synthesized using the commercially available crosslinkers, 1,2,4,5-cyclohexanetetracarboxylic dianhydride, and 1,2,3,4-cyclobutanetetracarboxylic dianhydride and three-arm hydroxy-telechelic PγMCL star polymers. Stress relaxation experiments on the crosslinked networks showed an Arrhenius dependence of viscosity with temperature with an activation energy of 118 ± 8 kJ/mol, which agrees well with the activation energy of transesterification exchange chemistry obtained from small molecule model studies. Dynamic mechanical thermal analysis and rheological experiments confirmed the dynamic nature of the networks and provided insight into the mechanism of exchange (i.e., associative or dissociative). Tensile testing showed that these materials can exhibit high strains at break and low Young's moduli, characteristic of soft and strong elastomers. By controlling the exchange chemistry and understanding the effect of macromolecular structure on mechanical properties, we prepared the high-performance elastomers that can be potentially reprocessed at moderately elevated temperatures.

RNA-inspired phosphate diester dynamic covalent networks

Neighboring group assisted rearrangement substantially increases relaxation rates in dynamic covalent networks, allowing easier (re)processing of these materials. In this work, we introduce a dynamic covalent network with anionic phosphate diesters as the sole dynamic group, incorporating β-hydroxy groups as a neighboring group, mimicking the self-cleaving backbone structure of RNA. The diester-based networks have slightly slower dynamics, but significantly better hydrolytic (and thermal) stability than analogous phosphate triester-based networks. Catalysis by the β-hydroxy group is vital for fast network rearrangement to occur, while the nature of the counterion has a negligible effect on the relaxation rate. Variable temperature 31P solid-state NMR demonstrated a dissociative bond rearrangement mechanism to be operative.

High-performance polyimine vitrimers from an aromatic bio-based scaffold

Bio-based vitrimers represent a promising class of thermosetting polymer materials, pairing the recyclability of dynamic covalent networks with the renewability of non-fossil fuel feedstocks. Vanillin, a low-cost lignin derivative, enables facile construction of polyimine networks marked by rapid exchange and sensitivity to acid-catalyzed hydrolysis. Furthermore, the aromatic structure makes it a promising candidate for the design of highly aromatic networks capable of high-performance thermal and dimensional stability. Such properties are paramount in polymeric thermal protection systems. Here, we report on the fabrication of polyimine networks with particularly high aromatic content from a novel trifunctional vanillin monomer prepared from the nucleophilic aromatic substitution of perfluoropyridine (PFP) on a multi-gram scale (>20 g) in high yield (86%). The trifunctional aromatic scaffold was then crosslinked with various diamines to demonstrate tunable viscoelastic behavior and thermal properties, with glass transition temperatures (Tg) ranging from 9 to 147 °C, degradation temperatures (5% mass loss) up to approximately 370 °C, and excellent char yields up to 68% at 650 °C under nitrogen. Moreover, the vitrimers displayed mechanical reprocessability over five destruction/healing cycles and rapid chemical recyclability following acidic hydrolysis at mild temperatures. Our findings indicate that vitrimers possessing tunable properties and high-performance thermomechanical behavior can be easily constructed from vanillin and electrophilic aromatic scaffolds for applications in heat-shielding materials and ablative coatings.

Plant-based Biomass/Polyvinyl Alcohol Gels for Flexible Sensors

Flexible sensors show great application potential in wearable electronics, human-computer interaction, medical health, bionic electronic skin and other fields. Compared with rigid sensors, hydrogel-based devices are more flexible and biocompatible and can easily fit the skin or be implanted into the body, making them more advantageous in the field of flexible electronics. In all designs, polyvinyl alcohol (PVA) series hydrogels exhibit high mechanical strength, excellent sensitivity and fatigue resistance, which make them promising candidates for flexible electronic sensing devices. This paper has reviewed the latest progress of PVA/plant-based biomass hydrogels in the construction of flexible sensor applications. We first briefly introduced representative plant biomass materials, including sodium alginate, phytic acid, starch, cellulose and lignin, and summarized their unique physical and chemical properties. After that, the design principles and performance indicators of hydrogel sensors are highlighted, and representative examples of PVA/plant-based biomass hydrogel applications in wearable electronics are illustrated. Finally, the future research is briefly prospected. We hope it can promote the research of novel green flexible sensors based on PVA/biomass hydrogel.

Improving the Recyclability of an Epoxy Resin through the Addition of New Biobased Vitrimer

In recent decades, the use of thermoset epoxy resins (ER) has spread to countless applications due to their mechanical properties, heat resistance and stability. However, these ERs are neither biodegradable nor recyclable due to their permanent crosslinked networks and usually, they are synthesized from fossil and toxic precursors. Therefore, reducing its consumption is of vital importance to the environment. On the one hand, the solution to the recyclability problems of epoxy resins can be achieved through the use of vitrimers, which have thermoset properties and can be recycled as thermoplastic materials. On the other hand, vitrimers can be made from natural sources, reducing their toxicity. In this work, a sustainable epoxy vitrimer has been efficiently synthesized, VESOV, by curing epoxidized soybean oil (ESO) with a new vanillin-derived Schiff base (VSB) dynamic hardener, aliphatic diamine (1,4-butanediamine, BDA) and using 1,2-dimethylimidazole (DMI) as an accelerator. Likewise, using the same synthesized VSB agent, a commercial epoxy resin has also been cured and characterized as ESO. Finally, different percentages (30, 50 and 70 wt%) of the same ER have been included in the formulation of VESOV, demonstrating that only including 30 wt% of ER in the formulation is able to improve the thermo-mechanical properties, maintaining the VESOV's inherent reprocessability or recyclability. In short, this is the first approach to achieve a new material that can be postulated in the future as a replacement for current commercial epoxy resins, although it still requires a minimum percentage of RE in the formulation, it makes it possible to recycle the material while maintaining good mechanical properties.

Postpolymerization Modification by Nucleophilic Addition to Styrenic Carbodiimides

Carbodiimides are electrophilic functional groups that react with select nucleophiles under mild conditions. However, their potential as platforms for postpolymerization modification has been relatively underexplored. We describe the synthesis and radical polymerization of a styrenic carbodiimide which undergoes rapid nucleophilic addition with primary and secondary alkyl amines under ambient conditions, even in the presence of other protic nucleophiles. The monomer is amenable to both free and controlled radical (co)polymerization, and we further demonstrate the utility of this approach by preparing covalent adaptable networks through guanylation of the styrenic carbodiimide with difunctional amines. These materials exhibit a variation in relaxation times according to both the guanidine structure and concentration, providing a facile means for tuning dynamic behavior.

Tailoring Dynamic Hydrogels by Controlling Associative Exchange Rates

Dithioalkylidenes are a newly-developed class of conjugate acceptors that undergo thiol exchange via an associative mechanism, enabling decoupling of key material properties for sustainability, biomedical, and sensing applications. Here, we show that the exchange rate is highly sensitive to the structure of the acceptor and tunable over four orders of magnitude in aqueous environments. Cyclic acceptors exchange rapidly, from 0.95 to 15.6 M-1s-1, while acyclic acceptors exchange between 3.77x10-3 and 2.17x10-2 M-1s-1. Computational, spectroscopic, and structural data suggest that cyclic acceptors are more reactive than their acyclic counterparts because of resonance stabilization of the tetrahedral exchange intermediate. We parametrize molecular reactivity with respect to computed descriptors of the electrophilic site and leverage this insight to design a compound with intermediate characteristics. Lastly, we incorporate this dynamic bond into hydrogels and demonstrate that the characteristic stress relaxation time (τ) is directly proportional to molecular kex.

Vitrimer synthesis from recycled polyurethane gylcolysate

Polyurethanes and plastics have become ubiquitous in modern society, finding use in a wide variety of applications such as clothing, automobiles, and shoes. While these materials provide numerous benefits to human life, their persistence in the environment has caused ecological imbalances. Therefore, new processes are needed to make these materials more sustainable and re-usable. In 2011, Ludwik Leibler introduced a new class of covalent adaptable network (CAN) polymers called Vitrimers. Vitrimers possess self-repairing properties and are capable of being reprocessed due to dynamic exchange or breaking/recombination of covalent bonds, similar to thermoset materials. This study explores the synthesis of Vitrimers using waste polyurethane or plastics as feedstock. The raw materials were glycolysed to obtain the glycolysate, which was then used as a reagent for the Vitrimers synthesis. The main objective of this study was to achieve the maximum self-repairable rate of the prepared sample. The Taguchi orthogonal analysis was employed to guide the experiments. The optimized experimental conditions for polyurethane glycolysis were determined to be under ethylene glycol and catalyzed by sodium hydroxide at 180°C for 1 h, resulting in the highest hydroxyl concentration in the glycolysate. In the second stage of the experiment, the ratio of hexamethylene diisocyanate (HDI) to solvent was set to 2, HDI trimer to solvent was 2, and PGE/glycolysate was 0.5, with equal amounts of PEG and glycolysate used as the solvent. The reaction was carried out at 80°C for 1 h, achieving a self-repair ability of 47.5% in the prepared sample. The results of this study show that waste polyurethane or plastics can be effectively recycled and transformed into vitrimers with self-repairing properties. The use of glycolysis as a feedstock is a promising method for the sustainable recycling of polyurethane waste. The Taguchi orthogonal analysis is an effective approach for optimizing experimental conditions and improving the reproducibility of the results.

From Lignins to Renewable Aromatic Vitrimers based on Vinylogous Urethane

During the two last decades, covalent adaptable networks (CANs) have proven to be an important new class of polymer materials combining the main advantages of thermoplastics and thermosets. For instance, materials can undergo reprocessing cycles by incorporating dynamic covalent bonds within a cross-linked network. Due to their versatility, renewable resources can be easily integrated into these innovative systems to develop sustainable materials, which can be related to the context of the recent development of a circular bioeconomy. Lignins, the main renewable sources of aromatic structures, are major candidates in the design of novel and biobased stimuli-responsive materials such as vitrimers due to their high functionality and specific chemical architectures. In the aim of developing recyclable lignin-based vinylogous urethane (VU) networks, an innovative strategy was elaborated in which lignin was first modified into liquid polyols and then into polyacetoacetates. Resulting macromonomers were integrated into aromatic VU networks and fully characterized through thermal, mechanical, and rheological experiments. Viscoelastic behaviors of the different aromatic vitrimers exhibited fast stress-relaxations (e. g., 39 s at 130 °C) allowing easy and fast mechanical reprocessing. A thermomechanical recycling study was successfully performed. Then, the developed strategy enabled the fabrication of healable biobased aromatic vitrimers with tunable structures and properties.

Vitrimeric shape memory polymer-based fingertips for adaptive grasping

The variability in the shapes and sizes of objects presents a significant challenge for two-finger robotic grippers when it comes to manipulating them. Based on the chemistry of vitrimers (a new class of polymer materials that have dynamic covalent bonds, which allow them to reversibly change their mechanical properties under specific conditions), we present two designs as 3D-printed shape memory polymer-based shape-adaptive fingertips (SMP-SAF). The fingertips have two main properties needed for an effective grasping. First, the ability to adapt their shape to different objects. Second, exhibiting variable rigidity, to lock and retain this new shape without the need for any continuous external triggering system. Our two design strategies are: 1) A curved part, which is suitable for grasping delicate and fragile objects. In this mode and prior to gripping, the SMP-SAFs are straightened by the force of the parallel gripper and are adapted to the object by shape memory activation. 2) A straight part that takes on the form of the objects by contact force with them. This mode is better suited for gripping hard bodies and provides a more straightforward shape programming process. The SMP-SAFs can be programmed by heating them up above glass transition temperature (54°C) via Joule-effect of the integrated electrically conductive wire or by using a heat gun, followed by reshaping by the external forces (without human intervention), and subsequently fixing the new shape upon cooling. As the shape programming process is time-consuming, this technique suits adaptive sorting lines where the variety of objects is not changed from grasp to grasp, but from batch to batch.

Chemically Recyclable Dithioacetal Polymers via Reversible Entropy-Driven Ring-Opening Polymerization

In a sustainable circular economy, polymers capable of chemical recycling to monomers are highly desirable. We report an efficient monomer-polymer recycling of polydithioacetal (PDTA). Pristine PDTAs were readily synthesized from 3,4,5-trimethoxybenzaldehyde and alkyl dithiols. They then exhibited depolymerizability via ring-closing depolymerization into macrocycles, followed by entropy-driven ring-opening polymerization (ED-ROP) to reform the virgin polymers. High conversions were obtained for both the forward and reverse reactions. Once crosslinked, the network exhibited thermal reprocessability enabled by acid-catalyzed dithioacetal exchange. The network retained the recyclability into macrocyclic monomers in solvent which can repolymerize to regenerate the crosslinked network. These results demonstrated PDTA as a new molecular platform for the design of recyclable polymers and the advantages of ED-ROP for which polymerization is favored at higher temperatures.

Reversibly growing crosslinked polymers with programmable sizes and properties

Growth constitutes a powerful method to post-modulate materials' structures and functions without compromising their mechanical performance for sustainable use, but the process is irreversible. To address this issue, we here report a growing-degrowing strategy that enables thermosetting materials to either absorb or release components for continuously changing their sizes, shapes, compositions, and a set of properties simultaneously. The strategy is based on the monomer-polymer equilibrium of networks in which supplying or removing small polymerizable components would drive the networks toward expansion or contraction. Using acid-catalyzed equilibration of siloxane as an example, we demonstrate that the size and mechanical properties of the resulting silicone materials can be significantly or finely tuned in both directions of growth and decomposition. The equilibration can be turned off to yield stable products or reactivated again. During the degrowing-growing circle, material structures are selectively varied either uniformly or heterogeneously, by the availability of fillers. Our strategy endows the materials with many appealing capabilities including environment adaptivity, self-healing, and switchability of surface morphologies, shapes, and optical properties. Since monomer-polymer equilibration exists in many polymers, we envision the expansion of the presented strategy to various systems for many applications.
