Abstract
Purpose The globally increasing older population raises concerns about age-related conditions, including cognitive impairment and depressive symptoms. In Latin America, nearly one-third of the population is affected by either of these conditions. However, data investigating the association between cognitive impairment and depressive symptoms, particularly in Brazil, are limited to small-scale studies that have not carefully examined the critical effects of variables such as education level and socioeconomic status on this relationship. We aimed at exploring this association in a representative population-based cohort. Methods We used the Brazilian Longitudinal Study of Aging (ELSI-BRAZIL) database to examine the relationship between depressive symptoms and cognitive impairment in Brazilian older adults, adjusted for potential confounders. Direct acyclic graphs and multivariable linear regression were used to build our model. Depressive symptoms were measured using a short version of the Center for Epidemiologic Studies Scale (CES D-8), and combined memory recall test as a surrogate of cognitive impairment. Results The study included 8280 participants. Only education level was identified as a confounder for the relationship between memory loss and depressive symptoms. After adjusting for age, sex, and education level, there was strong evidence for a negative association between depressive symptoms and memory performance. For every 5-unit increase in the CES D-8 score, there was a reduction in memory capacity, translating to a loss of approximately one word in the combined words recall test (mean - 0.18, 95% CI -0.22; -0.15, P < 0.001). In addition, we found strong evidence for an interaction between socioeconomic status and depressive symptoms. Subjects belonging to medium socioeconomic status (SES) showed more pronounced memory decline, when compared to those with lower SES (mean - 0.28, 95% CI -0.42 to -0.14, P < 0.001). Conclusions In adults aged over 50, after adjusting for sex, age, and educational level, a 5-unit increase in CES D-8 score is associated with loss of one point in the combined memory recall test. This association seems to be confounded by educational level and significantly modified by socioeconomic status.

Abstract
To diagnose mild cognitive impairment, it is crucial to understand whether subjective cognitive complaints reflect objective cognitive deficits. This question has mostly been investigated in the memory domain, with mixed results. Our study was one of the first to address it for language. Participants were 55-to-93-year-old memory clinic patients (n = 163). They filled in a questionnaire about subjective language and memory complaints and performed two language tasks (naming-by-definition and sentence comprehension). Greater language complaints were associated with two language measures, thus showing a moderate value in predicting language performance. Greater relative severity of language versus memory complaints was a better predictor, associated with three language performance measures. Surprisingly, greater memory complaints were associated with better naming, probably due to anosognosia in further disease progression or personality-related factors. Our findings highlight the importance of relative complaint severity across domains and, clinically, call for developing self-assessment questionnaires asking specific questions about multiple cognitive functions.

Abstract
Formal social participation significantly impacts health and well-being, potentially mitigating cognitive decline, although not consistently across all studies. Existing research often focuses solely on baseline participation levels, and age-related differences have primarily been explored among the Asian population. Therefore, this longitudinal study aims to assess the association between formal social participation and cognition across different age groups in individuals aged 50+ living in Europe and Israel, while capturing the dynamic nature of formal social participation. We use data from three waves (four, six, and eight) of the Survey of Health, Ageing, and Retirement in Europe (SHARE), comprising 85,601 respondents. Linear mixed-effects models were applied. The results show that participation in formal social activities mitigates cognitive decline in middle-aged and older adults, especially among those aged 70 to 79 and 80+. These findings support the need for social policies promoting formal social activities, for lasting cognitive health benefits.

Abstract
OBJECTIVE This study aimed to investigate the potential mediating role of the neurofilament light chain (NfL) level between depressive symptoms and cognitive function in older population. METHODS A total of 495 adults (age ≥60 years) from the National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey (NHANES) participated in this study. Cognitive function was assessed using a combination of the Animal Fluency Test (AFT), the Consortium to Establish a Registry for Alzheimer's Disease (CERAD) and the Digit Symbol Substitution Test (DSST). Word List Learning Test. Patient Health Questionnaire-9 (PHQ-9) was used to assess depressive symptoms. Data on serum NfL(sNfL) were collected. Multiple linear regressions and mediation analysis were utilized to examine the associations. RESULTS After adjusting for potential confounding factors, the proportions mediated by the sNfL level between depressive symptoms and cognitive function was 19.65 %. The indirect effect mediated by the sNfL level between depressive symptoms and cognitive function was significant (β[95 % CI]:-0.0089 [-0.0191, -0.0017],p = 0.040), while the direct effect in the absence of sNfL was non-significant (β[95 % CI]: -0.0365 [-0.0739 0.0008],p = 0.055). LIMITATIONS This is an explorative cross-sectional study with its limits in generalizability and ability to establish definitive causal associations. The results should be interpreted with caution due to the constraints imposed by the characteristics of the population with a relatively low overall level of depressive symptoms. CONCLUSION The sNfL level, depressive symptoms, and cognitive decline are interconnected, and the sNfL level could mediate the relationship between depressive symptoms and cognitive decline among older adults.

Abstract
OBJECTIVES There is no precedent for the use of social media in preventing sarcopenia. The aim of this study is to develop a social media-based intervention programme for the young-old population in the community in China to improve their awareness and behaviours regarding sarcopenia prevention. STUDY DESIGN Using guidelines for developing complex interventions, this study was divided into two main phases: a co-development phase and a preliminary test phase. Both were carried out in Changsha, China. The development phase employed co-design methodology with relevant stakeholders, including two rounds of consultation with patient and public involvement (12 members) and two rounds of focus groups (30 participants); this was followed by the three-week preliminary test phase (22 participants). MAIN OUTCOME MEASURES This study evaluated the consultation with patient and public involvement, and mainly collected qualitative data from the two rounds of focus group interviews and a final semi-structured interview following the preliminary test, so as to explore the participants' experiences, comments, and suggestions for revising the social media-based intervention. Handgrip strength was also evaluated. RESULTS The health education included seven videos of 4-6 min each related to sarcopenia, including information on the concept, influencing factors, adverse effects, manifestations, screening methods, and preventions. The exercise video consisted of four types of training (warm-up, aerobic, resistance, and flexibility training) and lasted 30 min, with a suggested engagement of at least 3 days/week. The specific contents and "dosage" of the final intervention were unanimously favourable to the diverse stakeholders involved (older adults with possible sarcopenia, experts, researchers). After the preliminary test, an improvement in handgrip strength was observed, from M15.92±SD5.22 kg to M19.13±SD5.44 kg (T = -5.44, P < 0.001). Subgroup analysis revealed that this improvement was evident in both men and women. CONCLUSIONS The social media-based intervention was universally endorsed by the participants and showed indications of a positive influence on sarcopenia. A feasibility study is now needed.

Abstract
Age-related cognitive and affective disorders pose significant public health challenges. Notably, emotional and cognitive symptoms co-occur across multiple age-associated conditions like normal aging, Alzheimer's disease (AD), and mood disorders such as depression and anxiety. While the intricate interplay underlying this relationship remains poorly understood, this article highlights the possibility that an imbalance between full-length (TrkB.FL) and truncated (TrkB.T1) isoforms of tyrosine kinase receptor TrkB in the neurotrophic system may significantly affect age-associated emotional and cognitive functions, by altering brain-derived neurotrophic factor (BDNF) signaling, integral to neuronal health, cognitive functions and mood regulation. While the contribution of this imbalance to pathogenesis awaits full elucidation, this review evaluates its potential mediating role, linking emotional and cognitive decline across age-related disorders The interplay between TrkB.T1 and TrkB.FL isoforms may be considered as a pivotal shared regulator underlying this complex relationship. The current review aims to synthesize current knowledge on TrkB isoform imbalance, specifically its contribution to age-related cognitive decline and mood disorders. By examining shared pathogenic pathways between aging, cognitive decline, and mood disorders through the lens of TrkB signaling, this review uncovers potential therapeutic targets not previously considered, offering a fresh perspective on combating age-related mental health issues as well as cognitive deficits.

Abstract
Though pain sensitivity impairments contribute to chronic pain in younger adults, it is unclear if pain hypersensitivity manifests with aging and is heightened in the geriatric chronic low back pain population. The cross-sectional study preliminarily addressed this gap by measuring pain sensitivity in older adults with chronic low back pain (n = 25) as well as pain-free sex-matched older (n = 25) and younger adults (n = 25). Pain sensitivity was quantified by 8 distinct measures that were subdivided as static (ie, pressure pain thresholds, heat pain thresholds, fixed mechanical pain, and fixed cold pain) and dynamic pain sensitivity (ie, mechanical temporal summation, thermal ramp and hold, heat pain aftersensations, and conditioned pain modulation). Test-retest reliability values for pain sensitivity ranged from moderate to excellent (intraclass correlation coefficients ≥ .500; p's < .05). The main effect for the group was significant (partial η2 = .413, P < .001), revealing between-group differences in pain sensitivity on 5 out of 8 tests (p's ≤ .043). Predominantly, both older adult groups demonstrated increased pain facilitation and decreased pain inhibition during dynamic pain sensitivity testing compared to pain-free younger adults (p's ≤ .044). Despite qualitative differences, static and dynamic pain sensitivity responses were statistically similar between older adults with and without chronic LBP (p's > .05). Findings suggest pain sensitivity can be reliably measured in older adults and that pain hypersensitivity develops with chronological aging, providing partial support for the theory that pain hypersensitivity may impact geriatric chronic pain populations. Further study is needed to more definitively parse out whether pain hypersensitivity is comparatively heightened in older adults with chronic LBP beyond the influence of chronological aging. PERSPECTIVE: This article establishes that surrogate measures of centrally mediated pain sensitization are heightened with aging. Impaired endogenous pain modulation may influence chronic pain development, maintenance, treatment efficacy, and/or ensuing disability, necessitating research to comprehensively characterize how pain hypersensitivity contributes to geriatric chronic pain conditions.

Abstract
The alterations in electroencephalogram (EEG) signals are the complex outputs of functional factors, such as normal physiological aging, pathological process, which results in further cognitive decline. It is not clear that when brain aging initiates, but elderly people are vulnerable to be incipient of neurodegenerative diseases such as Alzheimer's disease. The EEG signals were recorded from 20 healthy middle age and 20 healthy elderly subjects while performing a working memory task. Higuchi's fractal dimension (HFD), Katz's fractal dimension (KFD), sample entropy and three Hjorth parameters were extracted to analyse the complexity of EEG signals. Four machine learning classifiers, multilayer perceptron (MLP), support vector machine (SVM), K-nearest neighbour (KNN), and logistic model tree (LMT) were employed to distinguish the EEG signals of middle age and elderly age groups. HFD, KFD and Hjorth complexity were found significantly correlated with age. MLP achieved the highest overall accuracy of 93.75%. For posterior region, the maximum accuracy of 92.50% was achieved using MLP. Since fractal dimension associated with the complexity of EEG signals, HFD, KFD and Hjorth complexity demonstrated the decreased complexity from middle age to elderly groups. The complexity features appear to be more appropriate indicators of monitoring EEG signal complexity in healthy aging.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Most individuals spend a significant amount of their time at work, and the dynamics at work can potentially influence their overall life, especially health and mental health. The present study tried to understand the association of the nature of work categorized as physically demanding, psychologically demanding, and environmentally hazardous on life satisfaction, cognitive functioning, and depressive symptoms among working middle-aged and older adults in India. METHOD We used data from the Longitudinal Ageing Study in India (LASI), Wave 1, collected between 2017 and 2018. The study sample consists of 28,653 working adults aged between 45 and 70. The study measures were assessed using standard tools. Linear regression analysis was employed. RESULTS The results indicate that individuals working in less physically demanding (β = 0.06, 99% CI = 0.02-0.09) and not hazardous environments (β = 0.15, 99% CI = 0.09-0.20) had better life satisfaction. Also, not being involved in hazardous work environments increased the likelihood of good cognitive functioning and reduced depressive symptoms (β= -0.17, 99% CI= -0.20- -0.15). However, samples involved in works requiring less psychological demand had an increased likelihood of reduced life satisfaction and increased depressive symptoms. CONCLUSION This study's results highlight the importance of creating a conducive working environment for the ageing adults.

Abstract
Introduction: Age-related cognitive decline and mental health problems are accompanied by changes in resting-state functional connectivity (rsFC) indices, such as reduced brain network segregation. Meanwhile, exercise can improve cognition, mood, and neural network function in older adults. Studies on effects of exercise on rsFC outcomes in older adults have chiefly focused on changes after exercise training and suggest improved network segregation through enhanced within-network connectivity. However, effects of acute exercise on rsFC measures of neural network integrity in older adults, which presumably underlie changes observed after exercise training, have received less attention. In this study, we hypothesized that acute exercise in older adults would improve functional segregation of major cognition and affect-related brain networks. Methods: To test this, we analyzed rsFC data from 37 healthy and physically active older adults after they completed 30 min of moderate-to-vigorous intensity cycling and after they completed a seated rest control condition. Conditions were performed in a counterbalanced order across separate days in a within-subject crossover design. We considered large-scale brain networks associated with cognition and affect, including the frontoparietal network (FPN), salience network (SAL), default mode network (DMN), and affect-reward network (ARN). Results: We observed that after acute exercise, there was greater segregation between SAL and DMN, as well as greater segregation between SAL and ARN. Conclusion: These findings indicate that acute exercise in active older adults alters rsFC measures in key cognition and affect-related networks in a manner that opposes age-related dedifferentiation of neural networks that may be detrimental to cognition and mental health.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Anticholinergic and sedative medications affect cognition among older adults. The Drug Burden Index (DBI) is a validated measure of exposure to these medications, with higher DBI scores indicating higher drug burden. This ancillary analysis investigated the association between DBI and cognition assessed by the Modified Mini-Mental State Examination (3MS) and the Digit Symbol Substitution Test (DSST). METHODS The Health, Aging, and Body Composition Study was a prospective study of community-dwelling adults aged 70-79 years at enrollment. Using data from years 1, 5, and 10, DBI was calculated using medication data per participant. Linear mixed modeling was used to assess cross-sectional and longitudinal effects of DBI on 3MS and DSST. Adjusted models included biological sex, race, education level, APOE status, and death. Sensitivity analyses included testing the strength of the associations for each year and testing attrition due to death as a possible confounding factor via Cox-Proportional Hazard models. RESULTS After adjustment, DBI was inversely associated with 3MS and DSST scores. These associations became stronger in each subsequent year. Neither DBI at year 1 nor within-person change in DBI were predictive of longitudinal declines in either cognitive measure. Sensitivity analyses indicated that DBI, 3MS, and DSST were associated with a greater risk of attrition due to death. CONCLUSIONS Results suggest that in years when older adults had a higher DBI scores, they had significantly lower global cognition and slower processing speed. These findings further substantiate the DBI as a useful pharmacological tool for assessing the effect of medication exposure.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Psychiatric symptomatology and medications used in their treatment may be modifiable risk factors associated with cognitive function, although findings from population-based studies spanning the full adult age range are lacking. This study aimed to investigate associations between psychiatric symptomatology, psychotropic medication use and cognitive function in a population-based sample of men. METHODS Data for 537 men were drawn from the Geelong Osteoporosis Study. Cognitive function (psychomotor function, attention, working memory and visual learning) was determined using the Cog-State Brief Battery. Current depressive and anxiety symptomatology was determined using the Hospital Anxiety and Depression Scale, and psychotropic medication use was self-reported. Linear regression models were developed to determine associations between psychiatric symptomatology and psychotropic medication use with each cognitive measure. RESULTS Depressive symptomatology was associated with lower overall cognitive function (b-0.037 ± 0.010, η2 = 0.025, p < 0.001), psychomotor function (b 0.006 ± 0.002, η2 = 0.028 p < 0.001) and attention (b 0.004 ± 0.001, η2 = 0.021, p < 0.001), whereas psychotropic use was associated with lower overall cognitive function (b - 0.174 ± 0.075, η2 = 0.010, p = 0.021), attention (b 0.017 ± 0.008, η2 = 0.008, p = 0.038 and working memory (b 0.031 ± 0.012, η2 = 0.010, p = 0.010). Anticonvulsant use was associated with lower overall cognitive function (b - 0.723 ± 0.172, η2 = 0.032, p < 0.001), attention (b 0.065 ± 0.018, η2 = 0.029, p < 0.001) and working memory (b 0.088 ± 0.026, η2 = 0.022, p < 0.001). All relationships were found to have a small effect. There were no significant associations between anxiety symptomatology and antidepressant and anxiolytic use with any of the cognitive domains. CONCLUSION Depressive symptomatology and anticonvulsant use were associated with lower cognitive function. Understanding the underlying mechanisms involved in these relationships can advance knowledge on the heterogeneity in cognitive ageing and aid in prevention initiatives.

Abstract
BACKGROUND The current diagnostic workup for chronic dizziness in elderly patients often neglects neuropsychological assessment, thus missing a relevant proportion of patients, who perceive dizziness as a subjective chief complaint of a concomitant cognitive impairment. This study aimed to establish risk prediction models for cognitive impairment in chronic dizzy patients based on data sources routinely collected in a dizziness center. METHODS One hundred patients (age: 74.7 ± 7.1 years, 41.0% women) with chronic dizziness were prospectively characterized by (1) neuro-otological testing, (2) quantitative gait assessment, (3) graduation of focal brain atrophy and white matter lesion load, and (4) cognitive screening (MoCA). A linear regression model was trained to predict patients' total MoCA score based on 16 clinical features derived from demographics, vestibular testing, gait analysis, and imaging scales. Additionally, we trained a binary logistic regression model on the same data sources to identify those patients with a cognitive impairment (i.e., MoCA < 25). RESULTS The linear regression model explained almost half of the variance of patients' total MoCA score (R2 = 0.49; mean absolute error: 1.7). The most important risk-predictors of cognitive impairment were age (β = - 0.75), pathological Romberg's sign (β = - 1.05), normal caloric test results (β = - 0.8), slower timed-up-and-go test (β = - 0.67), frontal (β = - 0.6) and temporal (β = - 0.54) brain atrophy. The binary classification yielded an area under the curve of 0.84 (95% CI 0.70-0.98) in distinguishing between cognitively normal and impaired patients. CONCLUSIONS The need for cognitive testing in patients with chronic dizziness can be efficiently approximated by available data sources from routine diagnostic workup in a dizziness center.

Abstract
Purpose Intensive care unit (ICU) survivors can experience wide-ranging and long-lasting symptoms after hospital discharge. Cognitive impairment has received increased attention in relation to the COVID-19 pandemic and can affect patients' long-term quality of life. This study aimed to investigate the prevalence of cognitive impairment using an objective neurocognitive test 6 and 12 months following ICU admission and possible predictive factors for scoring below the defined cut-off. We also explored the prevalence of subjective cognitive complaints at 12 months, including the associated factors. Methods This was a prospective observational study of a national cohort of COVID-19 ICU survivors during the three first pandemic waves in Norway. Data was collected by the Norwegian Intensive Care and Pandemic Registry and the study group. Results At the six-month follow-up, 23.1% (95% CI [18.2─28.5]) of the 273 respondents scored below the cut-off on the Mini-MoCA, indicating mild cognitive impairment. At the 12-month follow-up, the prevalence declined to 11.1% (95% CI [7.5─15.6]) in 253 respondents. Older age (OR 1.06, 95% CI [1.02─1.12]) and depression (OR 1.25, 95% CI [1.07─1.55]) were associated with cognitive impairment at six months. At 12 months, almost half of the patients reported subjective cognitive complaints. Symptoms of mental health problems and fatigue were associated with subjective cognitive complaints in our exploratory analyses. Conclusion Cognitive impairment declined significantly from 6 to 12 months in this cohort of COVID-19 ICU patients, while subjective cognitive complaints remained high at 12 months, perhaps attributed to a high total symptom burden.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Visual impairment has been strongly associated with the incidence of dementia. Appropriate cognitive screening for the elderly with visual impairment is crucial for early identification of dementia and its management. Due to challenges in processing visually presented stimuli among participants, the cut-off score of the Hong Kong version of the Montreal Cognitive Assessment for the Visually Impaired (HKMoCA-VI), also known as MoCA-BLIND or MoCA-22, was unknown. Besides, the cognitive status of elderly with visual impairment residing in care homes is rarely investigated. The current study aimed to 1) establish the cut-off score for HKMoCA-VI and 2) examine the general cognitive functioning of elderly with visual impairment living in residential homes in Hong Kong in terms of MoCA-VI percentile scores. METHOD HKMoCA-VI and the Cantonese version of the Mini-Mental State Examination (CMMSE) were administered to 123 visually impaired elderly residents in care homes in Hong Kong. Percentile scores of HKMoCA-VI by age and education level were determined, and the concurrent validity, sensitivity, and specificity of HKMoCA-VI were assessed. RESULTS A cut-off score 12 was suggested for HKMoCA-VI, which yielded a sensitivity and specificity of 89.29% and 83.58%, respectively. Moreover, it strongly correlated with CMMSE, indicating satisfactory concurrent validity. CONCLUSIONS HKMoCA-VI is suggested to be a viable cognitive screening tool for elderly individuals with visual impairment in residential homes. Further modifications to enhance the sensitivity and specificity of the measure are proposed.

Abstract
OBJECTIVES Hemoglobin (Hgb) is associated with cognitive function, with low and high levels of Hgb leading to impaired cerebral oxygenation and perfusion. Yet, current studies focused on understanding the association between Hgb and cognitive function without consideration for each cognitive domain. Thus, this study aims to identify and visualize potentially interactive associations between Hgb and specific cognitive domains among older adults. METHOD This is a secondary data analysis using Wave II data from the National Social Life, Health, and Aging Project (NSHAP) and included 1022 older adults aged between 65 and 85 years. The network structure of three different models was estimated to understand the association between specific cognitive domains and Hgb in a mixed graphical model using the R-package 'mgm'. Model 1 did not adjust for any covariates, Model 2 adjusted for age and gender, and Model 3 adjusted for all covariates. RESULTS Among all cognitive domains, the visuospatial (edge weight = 0.06-0.10) and memory domains (0.04-0.07) were associated with Hgb in all three models Though not present in Model 3, the attention domain was associated with Hgb in Model 1 and Model 2 (0.08-0.11). In addition, the predictability of Hgb was the highest (8.1%) in Model 3. CONCLUSION Findings from this study suggest that cognition should be considered as a multidimensional construct, and its specific cognitive domain should be carefully assessed and managed in relation to Hgb among older adults.

Abstract
OBJECTIVES Videoconference psychotherapy (VCP) is a crucial component of many health care systems, allowing for remote delivery of services. However, little is known about the mechanisms of change within VCP. Previous research has suggested that self-disclosure may be greater in VCP than face-to-face modalities and was investigated in the current study. DESIGN Young adults aged 18-25 years (N = 57) were randomly allocated to face-to-face or VCP interview conditions, with measures completed pre- and post-interview. METHODS Participants completed an autobiographical memory task, requiring them to describe specific memories in response to positive and negative valence cue words. Measures included self-reported self-disclosure, blind observer-rated self-disclosure, memory specificity, and mean number of words per response. RESULTS No significant differences were found between conditions with regard to self-reported self-disclosure, capacity to recall specific memories, or words uttered per response. However, observer-rated depth of self-disclosure was significantly higher for participants in the face-to-face than VCP condition. Self-disclosure and memory specificity were also significantly greater for negative than positive valence cue words, regardless of condition. CONCLUSIONS The findings indicate that whilst participants may be able to draw on memories with equal ease regardless of interview modality, in VCP, emotional processing of these memories may require increased support and guidance from the therapist.

Abstract
Background and Objectives: Despite high incidences of cognitive impairment with aging, evidence on the prevalence and the seriousness of drug-induced cognitive impairment is limited. This study aims to evaluate the prevalence and the severity of drug-induced cognitive impairment and to investigate the clinical predictors of increased hospitalization risk from serious drug-induced cognitive impairment. Materials and Methods: Adverse drug events (ADEs) regarding drug-induced cognitive impairment reported to the Korean Adverse Event Reporting System Database (KAERS DB) from January 2012 to December 2021 were included (KIDS KAERS DB 2212A0073). The association between the etiologic classes and the reporting serious adverse events (SAEs) was evaluated using disproportionality analysis, and the effect was estimated with reporting odds ratio (ROR). Clinical predictors associated with increased risk of hospitalization from SAEs were identified via multivariate logistic analysis, and the effect was estimated with odds ratio (OR). Results: The most etiologic medication class for drug-induced cognitive impairment ADEs was analgesics, followed by sedative-hypnotics. Anticancer (ROR 57.105, 95% CI 15.174-214.909) and anti-Parkinson agents (ROR 4.057, 95% CI 1.121-14.688) were more likely to report serious drug-induced cognitive impairments. Male sex (OR 19.540, 95% CI 2.440-156.647) and cancer diagnosis (OR 18.115, 95% CI 3.246-101.101) are the major clinical predictors for increased risk of hospitalizations due to serious drug-induced cognitive impairment. Conclusions: This study highlights the significant prevalence and severity of drug-induced cognitive impairment with cancer diagnosis and anticancer agents. However, further large-scaled studies are required because of the potential underreporting of drug-induced cognitive impairments in real practice settings, which is further contributed to by the complexity of multiple contributing factors such as comorbidities.

Abstract
Introduction Few studies have examined the association of loneliness and cognitive functioning in the US. We used two common measures of loneliness and examined their association in a large sample of US Black, Latino, and White adults (ages ≥ 50). Methods We analyzed Wave 3 of the National Social Life, Health, and Aging Project (N = 2,757). We examined loneliness using one item from the CES-D and the Felt Loneliness Measure (NFLM); cognitive functioning was assessed using the Montreal Cognitive Assessment (MoCA) tool, where higher scores indicated better functioning. We used weighted ordinary least squares regressions to examine the effects of loneliness (CES-D loneliness and NFLM in separate models) on MoCA scores. In exploratory analyses, we examined if these relationships varied by race and ethnicity. We adjusted all models for sociodemographic and other salient factors (e.g., chronic disease, depressive symptoms, living alone). Results Mean age was 63.49 years, 52% were female, and 9% were Black and 6% Latino persons. Approximately 54% endorsed feeling lonely on at least one measure; 31% (CES-D) and 46% (NFLM). The relationship between loneliness measures was positive and significant, X 2 (1, N = 2,757) = 435.493 p < 0.001. However, only 40% of lonely individuals were identified as lonely on both assessments. CES-D loneliness was inversely (βˆ = -0.274, p = 0.032) associated with MoCA scores and this association did not vary by race and ethnicity. Greater NFLM loneliness was positively associated (βˆ = 0.445, p < 0.001) with higher MoCA scores for Latino participants only. Discussion Loneliness appears to be an important predictor of cognitive functioning. However, the association of loneliness and cognitive functioning varied when using the CES-D loneliness item or the NFLM. Future work is needed to understand how loneliness and its clinically relevant dimensions (social, emotional, existential, chronicity) relate to global and individual cognitive domains. Research is needed with racially and ethnically diverse midlife and older adults, particularly to understand our counterintuitive finding for Latino participants. Finally, findings also support the need for research on interventions to prevent cognitive decline targeting loneliness.

Abstract
Alzheimer's disease (AD) is a prevalent neurodegenerative disorder and a leading cause of dementia. Aging is a significant risk factor for AD, emphasizing the importance of early detection since symptoms cannot be reversed once the advanced stage is reached. Currently, there is no established method for early AD diagnosis. However, emerging evidence suggests that the microbiome has an impact on cognitive function. The gut microbiome and the brain communicate bidirectionally through the gut-brain axis, with systemic inflammation identified as a key connection that may contribute to AD. Gut dysbiosis is more prevalent in individuals with AD compared to their cognitively healthy counterparts, leading to increased gut permeability and subsequent systemic inflammation, potentially causing neuroinflammation. Detecting brain activity traditionally involves invasive and expensive methods, but electroencephalography (EEG) poses as a non-invasive alternative. EEG measures brain activity and multiple studies indicate distinct patterns in individuals with AD. Furthermore, EEG patterns in individuals with mild cognitive impairment differ from those in the advanced stage of AD, suggesting its potential as a method for early indication of AD. This review aims to consolidate existing knowledge on the microbiome and EEG as potential biomarkers for early-stage AD, highlighting the current state of research and suggesting avenues for further investigation.

Abstract
Heart failure and cognitive impairment emerge as public health problems that need to be addressed due to the aging global population. The conditions that often coexist are strongly related to advancing age and multimorbidity. Epidemiological evidence indicates that cardiovascular disease and neurodegenerative processes shares similar aspects, in term of prevalence, age distribution, and mortality. Type 2 diabetes increasingly represents a risk factor associated not only to cardiometabolic pathologies but also to neurological conditions. The pathophysiological features of type 2 diabetes and its metabolic complications (hyperglycemia, hyperinsulinemia, and insulin resistance) play a crucial role in the development and progression of both heart failure and cognitive dysfunction. This connection has opened to a potential new strategy, in which new classes of anti-diabetic medications, such as glucagon-like peptide-1 receptor (GLP-1R) agonists and sodium-glucose cotransporter 2 (SGLT2) inhibitors, are able to reduce the overall risk of cardiovascular events and neuronal damage, showing additional protective effects beyond glycemic control. The pleiotropic effects of GLP-1R agonists and SGLT2 inhibitors have been extensively investigated. They exert direct and indirect cardioprotective and neuroprotective actions, by reducing inflammation, oxidative stress, ions overload, and restoring insulin signaling. Nonetheless, the specificity of pathways and their contribution has not been fully elucidated, and this underlines the urgency for more comprehensive research.

Abstract
Premature brain aging is associated with poorer cognitive reserve and lower resilience to injury. When there are focal brain lesions, brain regions may age at different rates within the same individual. Therefore, we hypothesize that reduced gray matter volume within specific brain systems commonly associated with language recovery may be important for long-term aphasia severity. Here we show that individuals with stroke aphasia have a premature brain aging in intact regions of the lesioned hemisphere. In left domain-general regions, premature brain aging, gray matter volume, lesion volume and age were all significant predictors of aphasia severity. Increased brain age following a stroke is driven by the lesioned hemisphere. The relationship between brain age in left domain-general regions and aphasia severity suggests that degradation is possible to specific brain regions and isolated aging matters for behavior.

Abstract
OBJECTIVE Cognitive impairment is now recognized as an impending public health crisis. About one-third of adults are concerned about their cognition, and the prevalence of objective cognitive impairment is much higher among those with neurological disorders. Existing screening tools are narrowly focused on detecting dementia in older adults and must be clinician-administered and scored, making them impractical for many neurology practices. This study examined the utility of a brief, self-administered, computerized cognitive screening tool, the Brief Assessment of Cognitive Health (BACH), in identifying cognitive impairment in adults. METHODS 912 adults (ages 18-84) completed BACH and a neuropsychological battery. Multivariable models were developed to provide a BACH index score reflecting the probability of cognitive impairment for individual patients. Predictive accuracy was compared to that of the Montreal Cognitive Assessment (MoCA) in a subset of 160 older adults from a Memory Disorders clinic. RESULTS The final multivariable model showed good accuracy in identifying cognitively impaired individuals (c = 0·77). Compared to MoCA, BACH had superior predictive accuracy in identifying older patients with cognitive impairment (c = 0·79 vs. 0·67) as well as differentiating those with MCI or dementia from those without cognitive impairment (c = 0·86 vs. c = 0·67). CONCLUSIONS Results suggest that cognitive impairment can be identified in adults using a brief, self-administered, automated cognitive screening tool, and BACH provides several advantages over existing screeners: self-administered; automatic scoring; immediate results in health record; easily interpretable score; utility in wide range of patients; and flags for treatable factors that may contribute to cognitive complaints (i.e., depression, sleep problems, and stress).

Abstract
Health literacy (HL) is crucial in achieving the Sustainable Development Goal of reducing one-third of premature mortality by 2030 from Non-Communicable Diseases (NCDs) and improving Universal Health Coverage. Low health literacy is linked to poor health outcomes, and evidence shows that levels of limited HL are high, even among highly educated individuals. This study aims to assess HL levels and related factors among patients with NCDs at Tribhuvan University Teaching Hospital (TUTH) in Nepal. A cross-sectional survey was conducted at TUTH among 303 patients with NCDs with Cardiovascular Diseases, Chronic Obstructive Pulmonary Disease, Diabetes Mellitus, Hypertension, Epilepsy, Asthma and Cancer who came for follow-up from December 2022 to February 2023. Data was collected via face-to-face interviews by the trained enumerators using a structured Health Literacy Questionnaire (HLQ) containing 44 items (divided into nine domains). Multivariate logistic regression analysis was performed using SPSS version 26, with statistical significance at 0.05, to determine the associated factors of HL. The mean ±SD age of the respondents was 47.4±16.18 years. More than half of the respondents were female (56.1%). The patients had higher HL in all HL domains except 'Navigating the healthcare system'. Educational status was significantly associated with six out of nine HL domains. Co-morbidity, attendance at health-related seminars, regular physical activity, and social connectedness were associated with at least one of the domains of HL. This study identified the important factors of HL, such as socio-demographic and medical factors among patients with NCDs. This highlights the need for a comprehensive approach to address identified gaps in HL, considering its multifaceted and composite nature and promoting interventions to improve HL in high-risk populations.

Abstract
Malnutrition affects approximately one quarter of UK adults aged 65 years and over. As the global demographic shift continues, malnutrition is expected to increase. Oral nutritional supplements (ONS) are used both to prevent and to treat malnutrition. However, their effectiveness is compromised by poor adherence, and it is not well understood what contributes to this. Therefore, the current research was designed to explore ONS adherence from the parallel perspectives of ONS as a prescribed "medication" and as a food supplement/substitute. Eighteen older adults (13F, 5M; mean age = 73.4 yr; range: 70-80 yr) participated in focus groups (three in-person and one online), to investigate experiences of taking prescribed medications, including dietary supplements, and what should be factors to consider in supporting regular intake of ONS for trial development, as well as any potential improvements to products. Focus group sessions were recorded and then transcribed. Thematic Analysis was applied to the transcripts by the first author, and themes were discussed in depth, using exemplar quotes from participants. Five dominant themes were identified from the data: Disgust, Palatability and Acceptance; End-of-Life Care; Resistance to Medicines; Rituals and Reminders; and Real Food Displacement. Nutritional supplements were characterised as "disgusting", "manufactured", and associated with serious, chronic illness, as well as end-of-life care, in contrast to probiotics which were linked with health and wellness. The sweet taste of ONS was identified as a barrier to intake, given that it is generally associated with a signal to stop eating, and low hunger. As a group, participants tried to "avoid taking medicines", and viewed the need to have them negatively, yet most regularly took prescribed medication and/or vitamin supplements. Participants identified several, rituals and reminders to take medicines, including meal-based, or time-of-day-based prompts (e.g., before, with or after meals). To improve adherence, savoury products were suggested, as well as a more person-centred approach to individual nutritional needs and preferences. Overall, the group discussion mainly identified barriers to intake, but that improving taste, adding to "real food" (not replacing meals), and offering variety of flavour and form (e.g., savoury soups as well as sweet drinks) could be included in future trials to improve appeal and therefore intake. Future work should continue to explore how best to formulate, market and/or prescribe ONS, and how this might vary for malnutrition prevention vs treatment strategies.

Abstract
Aging refers to complete deterioration of physiological integrity and function. By midcentury, adults over 60 years of age and children under 15 years will begin to outnumber people in working age. This shift will bring multiple global challenges for economy, health, and society. Eventually, aging is a natural process playing a vital function in growth and development during pediatric stage, maturation during adult stage, and functional depletion. Tissues experience negative consequences with enhanced genomic instability, deregulated nutrient sensing, mitochondrial dysfunction, and decline in performance on cognitive tasks. As brain ages, its volume decreases, neurons & glia get inflamed, vasculature becomes less developed, blood pressure increases with a risk of stroke, ischemia, and cognitive deficits. Diminished cellular functions leads to progressive reduction in functional and emotional capacity with higher possibility of disease and finally death. This review overviews cellular as well as molecular aspects of aging, biological pathway related to accelerated brain aging, and strategies minimizing cognitive aging. Age-related changes include altered bioenergetics, decreased neuroplasticity and flexibility, aberrant neural activity, deregulated Ca2+ homeostasis in neurons, buildup of reactive oxygen species, and neuro-inflammation. Unprecedented progress has been achieved in recent studies, particularly in terms of how herbal or natural substances affect genetic pathways and biological functions that have been preserved through evolution. Herein, the present work provides an overview of ageing and age-related disorders and explore the molecular mechanisms that underlie therapeutic effects of herbal and natural chemicals on neuropathological signs of brain aging.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Health literacy is a crucial aspect of informed decision-making, and limited health literacy has been associated with worse health care outcomes. To date, health literacy has not been examined in vascular surgery patients. Therefore, we conducted a prospective observational study to determine the prevalence and factors associated with poor health literacy in vascular surgery patients. METHODS The Newest Vital Sign (Pfizer, New York, NY), a validated instrument, was used to appraise the health literacy of 150 patients who visited the outpatient vascular clinic at UF Health Shands Hospital between April 2022 and August 2022. Patients who scored a 4 (out of 6) or higher were classified as having adequate health literacy. Each study participant also completed a sociodemographic questionnaire. RESULTS In total, 82 out of the 150 (54%) patients we screened had limited health literacy. The prevalence of limited health literacy varied and was independently associated with increased age (odds ratio 1.06; 95% [1.02 to 1.10], P = .004), having not attended college (high school diploma versus college+ odds ratio 3.5; 95% [1.26 to 10.1], P = .018), and African American race (odds ratio 5.3; 95% [1.59 to 22.3], P = .012). A total of 83% of African American patients had limited health literacy, compared to 49% of Asian and White patients. CONCLUSION Most vascular surgery patients have limited health literacy. Increased age, fewer years of education, and African American race were associated with limited health literacy. Physicians caring for patients with lower health literacy should investigate and use communication strategies tailored to patients with limited health literacy.

Abstract
The aim of this study was to determine the effect of cognitive interference through a dual-task (DT) paradigm on gait parameters by sex or other predictive variables, such as physical fitness, health status, and cognition. A total of 125 older adults joined in this study (age, 72.42 ± 5.56 years old; 28 men and 97 women). The DT paradigm was evaluated through Comfortable Linear Gait (CLG) and Complex Gait Test (CGT). The gait parameters between single task (ST) vs. DT condition in men showed a significant reduction in speed (p < 0.001), cadence (p < 0.001), and step length (p = 0.049) and increased time to execute the CGT (p < 0.001), while women showed a decreased speed (p = 0.014), cadence (p < 0.001), and double support coefficient variation (CV) (p = 0.024) and increased single support time (p < 0.001) and CV step length (p < 0.05). In addition, women increased CGT time (p < 0.001). Furthermore, correlations between DT cost (DTC) cadence vs. Physical Activity for Elderly questionnaire (PASE) (r = - 0.399; p = 0.008), DTC single support vs. 30 s Sit to Stand Test (r = - 0.356; 0.016), DTC single support vs. Rey Auditory Verbal Learning Test-Learning curve (r = - 0.335; p = 0.023), DTC double support vs. 30 s Sit to Stand Test (r = - 0.590; p < 0.001), DTC CV step length vs. 30 s Sit to Stand (r = - 0.545; p = 0.003), and DTC CGT vs. 30 s Sit to Stand Test (r = - 0.377; p = 0.048) were found. The results of our study indicate that the gait parameters within the DT condition decreased speed and cadence, while increasing CV step length and CGT time, causing slower gait with shortened steps in men and women.

Abstract
OBJECTIVES To investigate cognitive change in multiple cognitive domains in a population-based cohort of 713 Faroese older adults. METHODS Participants were cognitively tested at baseline (70-74 years) and re-evaluated after 10 years. Changes in cognitive performance and the impact of sociodemographic factors, lifestyle, and health conditions were analysed using mixed-effect models. Participants free from dementia were studied in separate analyses. RESULTS A significant decline over 10 years was observed in most of the neuropsychological tests. People living in rural areas, married or cohabiting people, people without professional education, slightly older persons, smokers, teetotalers, and people with heart disease and abnormal electrocardiogram (ECG) had a steeper decline in cognitive ability. Conflicting results were found for sex and people with myocardial infarction (MI). DISCUSSION There are modifiable factors that contribute to cognitive decline which should be addressed in future public health efforts.

Abstract
This study investigates the self-reference effect (SRE) with an ownership memory task across several age groups, providing the first age exploration of implicit ownership memory biases from adolescence to older adulthood (N = 159). Using a well-established ownership task, participants were required to sort images of grocery items as belonging to themselves or to a fictitious unnamed Other. After sorting and a brief distractor task, participants completed a surprise one-step source memory test. Overall, there was a robust SRE, with greater source memory accuracy for self-owned items. The SRE attenuated with age, such that the magnitude of difference between self and other memory diminished into older adulthood. Importantly, these findings were not due to a deterioration of memory for self-owned items, but rather an increase in memory performance for other-owned items. Linear mixed effects analyses showed self-biases in reaction times, such that self-owned items were identified more rapidly compared with other owned items. Again, age interacted with this effect showing that the responses of older adults were slowed, especially for other-owned items. Several theoretical implications were drawn from these findings, but we suggest that older adults may not experience ownership-related biases to the same degree as younger adults. Consequently, SREs through the lens of mere ownership may attenuate with age.

Abstract
Ideational slippage-characterized by incorrect word usage and strained logic during dialogue-is common in aging and, at greater frequency, is an indicator of pre-clinical cognitive decline. Performance-based assessment of ideational slippage may be useful in the study of cognitive aging and Alzheimer's-disease-related pathology. In this preliminary study, we examine the association between corpus callosum volume and a performance-based assessment of ideational slippage in middle-aged and older adults (age 61-79 years). Ideational slippage was indexed from cognitive special scores using the Rorschach Inkblot Method (RIM), which are validated indices of deviant verbalization and logical inaccuracy (Sum6, WSum6). Among middle-aged and older adults, smaller splenium volume was associated with greater ideational slippage (ηp2 = 0.48), independent of processing speed and fluid intelligence. The observed negative associations are consistent with visuospatial perception and cognitive functions of the splenium. The effect was strongest with the splenium, and volumes of the genu and total white matter had small effects that were not statistically significant. Conclusions: Results are discussed with future application of RIM special scores for the assessment of pre-clinical cognitive decline and, based on observed effect sizes, power analyses are reported to inform future study planning.

Abstract
The hippocampus is a brain area linked to cognition. The mechanisms that maintain cognitive activity in humans are poorly understood. Centenarians display extreme longevity which is generally accompanied by better quality of life, lower cognitive impairment, and reduced incidence of pathologies including neurodegenerative diseases. We performed transcriptomic studies in hippocampus samples from individuals of different ages (centenarians [≥97 years], old, and young) and identified a differential gene expression pattern in centenarians compared to the other two groups. In particular, several isoforms of metallothioneins (MTs) were highly expressed in centenarians. Moreover, we identified that MTs were mainly expressed in astrocytes. Functional studies in human primary astrocytes revealed that MT1 and MT3 are necessary for their homeostasis maintenance. Overall, these results indicate that the expression of MTs specifically in astrocytes is a mechanism for protection during aging.

Abstract
As the population ages, the incidence of age-related neurodegenerative diseases is rapidly increasing, and novel approaches to mitigate this soaring prevalence are sorely needed. Recent studies have highlighted the importance of gut microbial homeostasis and its impact on brain functions, commonly referred to as the gut-brain axis, in maintaining overall health and wellbeing. Nonetheless, the mechanisms by which this system acts remains poorly defined. In this review, we will explore how (poly)phenols, a class of natural compounds found in many plant-based foods and beverages, can modulate the gut-brain axis, and thereby promote neural health. While evidence indicates a beneficial role of (poly)phenol consumption as part of a balanced diet, human studies are scarce and mechanistic insight is still lacking. In this regard, we make the case that dietary (poly)phenols should be further explored to establish their therapeutic efficacy on brain health through modulation of the gut-brain axis, with much greater emphasis on carefully designed human interventions.

Abstract
The COVID-19 pandemic has expedited the integration of Smart Voice Assistants (SVA) among older people. The qualitative data derived from user commands on SVA is pivotal for elucidating the engagement patterns of older individuals with such systems. However, the sheer volume of user-generated voice interaction data presents a formidable challenge for manual coding. Compounding this issue, age-related cognitive decline and alterations in speech patterns further complicate the interpretation of older users' SVA voice interactions. Conventional dictionary-based textual analysis tools, which count word frequencies, are inadequate in capturing the evolving and communicative essence of these interactions that unfold over a series of dialogues and modify with time. To address these challenges, our study introduces a novel, modified rule-based Natural Language Processing (MR-NLP) model augmented with human input. This reproducible approach capitalizes on human-derived insights to establish a lexicon of critical keywords and to formulate rules for the iterative refinement of the NLP model. English speakers, aged 50 or older and residing alone, were enlisted to engage with Amazon Alexa™ via predefined daily routines for a minimum of 30 min daily spanning three months (N = 35, mean age = 77). We amassed time-stamped, textual data comprising participants' user commands and responses from Alexa™. Initially, a subset constituting 20% of the data (1,020 instances) underwent manual coding by human coder, predicated on keywords and commands. Separately, a rule-based Natural Language Processing (NLP) methodology was employed to code the identical subset. Discrepancies arising between human coder and the NLP model programmer were deliberated upon and reconciled to refine the rule-based NLP coding framework for the entire dataset. The modified rule-based NLP approach demonstrated notable enhancements in efficiency and scalability and reduced susceptibility to inadvertent errors in comparison to manual coding. Furthermore, human input was instrumental in augmenting the NLP model, yielding insights germane to the aging adult demographic, such as recurring speech patterns or ambiguities. By disseminating this innovative software solution to the scientific community, we endeavor to advance research and innovation in NLP model formulation, subsequently contributing to the understanding of older people's interactions with SVA and other AI-powered systems.

Abstract
Brain fog is a phenomenon that is frequently reported by persons with chronic pain. Difficulties with cognition including memory impairments, attentional issues, and cloudiness are commonly described. The current medical literature demonstrates a similar cloudiness: there is no clear taxonomy or nomenclature, no well-validated evaluations and a dearth of effective interventions. To focus our understanding of this complex phenomenon, we will perform a discourse analysis to explore how brain fog is described in public posts on social media. Discursive methodology will generate insights regarding the societal understanding and meanings attributed to brain fog, by sampling perspectives of persons with lived experience, currently underrepresented in the medical literature. It is anticipated that the results of the proposed study will 1) help healthcare professionals better understand the experience of chronic pain-related brain fog and 2) generate hypotheses for future research. To conclude, by incorporating innovative and contemporary methods, this proposed discourse analysis of social media sources will generate nuanced insights, bridging the gap between researchers, health care providers, and persons with lived experience.

Abstract
Diminished cognitive and physical functions negatively affect the daily functions of individuals. Although combined cognitive and physical training prevents instrumental activities of daily living (IADL) disability in older adults, no predictive model or mediation analysis of IADL after combined training exists. This study aims to employ prediction and mediation analysis to identify the predictors of IADL performance and to elucidate the mediators of the association between baseline global cognition and subsequent IADL performance following combined cognitive and physical training. This study involved 177 participants aged 60 years and older who underwent combined training. Cognitive function was measured with the Montreal Cognitive Assessment (MoCA), Digit Symbol Substitution Test (DSST), Color Trails Test, Word List, and a dual task; physical function with the Timed Up and Go (TUG) test; daily function with the Lawton IADL Scale. We conducted regression analyses to identify the predictors of IADL performance, and mediation analysis to examine whether DSST and TUG mediate the relationship between MoCA and IADL. The pre-intervention DSST and TUG were significant independent predictors of post-intervention IADL. The association between the pre-intervention MoCA and post-intervention IADL was mediated by pre-intervention DSST and TUG. This study highlighted the importance of measuring and improving processing speed and functional mobility before and during interventions to enhance IADL outcomes.Trial registration: NCT03619577, 23/07/2018; NCT04689776, 29/12/2020.

Abstract
OBJECTIVES Few studies have examined the associations between social relationships and cognition in very old adults (80+ years). Moreover, limited research has considered structural and functional aspects of social relationships together when exploring their associations with cognition. Therefore, the present study aimed to investigate the associations between structural and functional social aspects and cognition in very old age. METHOD The sample comprised 518 two-wave participants of the NRW80+ Study, who showed no indication of dementia and an average age of 85 years at baseline (range: 80-97 years). They were assessed twice over an approximate 2-year interval. Multilevel linear growth curve analysis was employed to model cognitive development over very old age and to examine the associations between structural and functional aspects of social relationships and cognitive development. It was controlled for demographic and health characteristics. RESULTS A larger social network size (ß = 0.05, 95% CI [0.02, 0.08], p = 0.002) and frequent compared with occasional, seldom, and no contact with others (ß = 0.16, 95% CI [0.03, 0.28], p = 0.013) were associated with higher global cognition in the fully-controlled model. Model comparisons further revealed that structural aspects better predicted global cognition in very old age compared to functional aspects (χ2(2) = 16.17, p < 0.001). CONCLUSION The findings underline the positive association between structural aspects of social relationships and global cognition in very old age. They also highlight the need for interventions promoting a socially active lifestyle to prevent cognitive decline in this vulnerable age group.

Abstract
BACKGROUND/OBJECTIVES Engagement in sport offers the potential for improved physical and psychological well-being and has been shown to be beneficial for promoting healthy aging. Opportunities for older adults to (re)engage with sport are limited by a paucity of age-appropriate introductory sports intervention programs. As such, the study evaluated the efficacy of a newly designed 8-week badminton training program (Shuttle Time for Seniors) on markers of healthy aging and the lived experiences of participation. METHODS Forty-three older adults assigned to a control (N = 20) or intervention group (N = 23) completed pre-post assessment of physical and cognitive function, self-efficacy for exercise, and well-being. Focus groups were conducted for program evaluation and to understand barriers and enablers to sustained participation. RESULTS Those in the intervention group increased upper body strength, aerobic fitness, coincidence anticipation time, and self-efficacy for exercise. Objectively improved physical and cognitive functions were corroborated by perceived benefits indicated in thematic analysis. Shuttle Time for Seniors was perceived as appropriate for the population, where the age-appropriate opportunity to participate with likeminded people of similar ability was a primary motivator to engagement. Despite willingness to continue playing, lack of badminton infrastructure was a primary barrier to continued engagement. CONCLUSION Shuttle Time for Seniors offered an important opportunity for older adults to (re)engage with badminton, where the physical and psychosocial benefits of group-based badminton improved facets important to healthy aging. Significance/Implications: Age-appropriate introductory intervention programs provide opportunity for older adults to (re)engage with sport. However, important barriers to long-term engagement need to be addressed from a whole systems perspective.

Abstract
Background: A water extract (CAW) of the Ayurvedic plant Centella asiatica administered in drinking water has been shown to improve cognitive deficits in mouse models of aging and neurodegenerative diseases. Here the effects of CAW administered in drinking water or the diet on cognition, measures of anxiety and depression-like behavior in healthy aged mice are compared. Methods: Three- and eighteen-month-old male and female C57BL6 mice were administered rodent AIN-93M diet containing CAW (0, 0.2, 0.5 or 1% w/w) to provide 0, 200 mg/kg/d, 500 mg/kg/d or 1,000 mg/kg/d CAW for a total of 5 weeks. An additional group of eighteen-month-old mice were treated with CAW (10 mg/mL) in their drinking water CAW for a total of 5 weeks to deliver the same exposure of CAW as the highest dietary dose (1,000 mg/kg/d). CAW doses delivered were calculated based on food and water consumption measured in previous experiments. In the fourth and fifth weeks, mice underwent behavioral testing of cognition, anxiety and depression (n = 12 of each sex per treatment group in each test). Results: Aged mice of both sexes showed cognitive deficits relative to young mice while only female aged mice showed increased anxiety compared to the young female mice and no differences in depression were observed between the different ages. CAW (1,000 mg/kg/d) in the drinking water improved deficits in aged mice in learning, executive function and recognition memory in both sexes and attenuated the increased measures of anxiety observed in the aged female mice. However, CAW in the diet only improved executive function in aged mice at the highest dose (1,000 mg/kg/d) in both sexes and did so less robustly than when given in the water. There were no effects of CAW on depression-like behavior in aged animals regardless of whether it was administered in the diet or the water. Conclusions: These results suggest that CAW can ameliorate age-related changes in measures of anxiety and cognition and that the mode of administration is important for the effects of CAW on resilience to these age-related changes.

Abstract
This systematic review will identify and synthesize the emerging evidence on older adults with Mild Cognitive Impairment (MCI) utilizing Information and Communication Technology (ICT) to maintain, restore, or augment social networks. The systematic review will consider the evidence on contextual and personal factors of older adults with MCI and their ICT use for social connectedness. The evidence searches will be implemented in PsycINFO, Academic Search Complete, Medline, PubMed, and manual searches. We shall review articles that were published between January 2010 and October 2023 in English and on Information and Communication Technology utility in social networking among older adults with MCI. The process of article selection will be conducted through title screening, abstract screening; and full article screening, following the Population, Intervention, Control, Outcomes (PICO) criteria. Given that all the studies included in this review are publicly accessible and have already obtained ethical approval from their respective institutions, there is no obligation for us to seek additional ethical clearance for our systematic review. We plan to share the outcomes of the systematic review through online presentations and dissemination within the research community. The findings from this review will identify the extent of empirical evidence on older adults with MCI utilizing ICTs to maintain, restore or augment their social networks. This review will provide evidence for contextual and personal factors in older adults with MCI for the social networks with ICT use. This review will propose practical implications for the effective utilization of ICT by older adults with MCI.

Abstract
PURPOSE Cognitive deficits are common among stroke survivors and impact their functional independence. Despite the prevalence of cognitive deficits after stroke, cognitive function is largely overlooked in post-stroke care. The aim of this qualitative study was to explore the experiences of individuals living with post-stroke cognitive changes to understand the impact of these changes on their daily lives. MATERIALS AND METHODS Semi-structured interviews were conducted with a purposeful sample of thirteen community-dwelling adults 50 years and older with chronic stroke who self-identified cognitive changes post-stroke. Interviews were transcribed and an inductive thematic analysis was completed. RESULTS Four key themes were identified: 1) inability to maintain everyday activities; 2) experiencing emotional responses to living with post-stroke cognitive changes; 3) a shrinking social world and; 4) seeking care for cognitive health post-stroke. CONCLUSIONS Post-stroke cognitive changes were described by participants as a driving force behind negative shifts in their daily lives, emotional health, and social connections after stroke. Despite seeking care for their post-stroke cognitive changes, many participants were unable to find support in mainstream healthcare. There is a demonstrated need to further elucidate the gaps in care for post-stroke cognitive deficits and implement community interventions targeting cognitive health post-stroke.

Abstract
Learning outcome is modified by the degree to which the subject responds and pays attention to specific stimuli. Our recent research suggests that presenting stimuli in contingency with a specific phase of the cardiorespiratory rhythm might expedite learning. Specifically, expiration-diastole (EXP-DIA) is beneficial for learning trace eyeblink conditioning (TEBC) compared with inspiration-systole (INS-SYS) in healthy young adults. The aim of this study was to investigate whether the same holds true in healthy elderly adults (n = 50, aged >70 yr). Participants were instructed to watch a silent nature film while TEBC trials were presented at either INS-SYS or EXP-DIA (separate groups). Learned responses were determined as eyeblinks occurring after the tone conditioned stimulus (CS), immediately preceding the air puff unconditioned stimulus (US). Participants were classified as learners if they made at least five conditioned responses (CRs). Brain responses to the stimuli were measured by electroencephalogram (EEG). Memory for the film and awareness of the CS-US contingency were evaluated with a questionnaire. As a result, participants showed robust brain responses to the CS, acquired CRs, and reported awareness of the CS-US relationship to a variable degree. There was no difference between the INS-SYS and EXP-DIA groups in any of the above. However, when only participants who learned were considered, those trained at EXP-DIA (n = 11) made more CRs than those trained at INS-SYS (n = 13). Thus, learned performance could be facilitated in those elderly who learned. However, training at a specific phase of cardiorespiratory rhythm did not increase the proportion of participants who learned.NEW & NOTEWORTHY We trained healthy elderly individuals in trace eyeblink conditioning, either at inspiration-systole or at expiration-diastole. Those who learned exhibited more conditioned responses when trained at expiration-diastole rather than inspiration-systole. However, there was no difference between the experimental groups in the proportion of individuals who learned or did not learn.

Abstract
Air pollution and neighborhood socioeconomic status (N-SES) are associated with adverse cardiovascular health and neuropsychiatric functioning in older adults. This study examines the degree to which the joint effects of air pollution and N-SES on the cognitive decline are mediated by high cholesterol levels, high blood pressure (HBP), and depression. In the Emory Healthy Aging Study, 14,390 participants aged 50+ years from Metro Atlanta, GA, were assessed for subjective cognitive decline using the cognitive function instrument (CFI). Information on the prior diagnosis of high cholesterol, HBP, and depression was collected through the Health History Questionnaire. Participants' census tracts were assigned 3-year average concentrations of 12 air pollutants and 16 N-SES characteristics. We used the unsupervised clustering algorithm Self-Organizing Maps (SOM) to create 6 exposure clusters based on the joint distribution of air pollution and N-SES in each census tract. Linear regression analysis was used to estimate the effects of the SOM cluster indicator on CFI, adjusting for age, race/ethnicity, education, and neighborhood residential stability. The proportion of the association mediated by high cholesterol levels, HBP, and depression was calculated by comparing the total and direct effects of SOM clusters on CFI. Depression mediated up to 87 % of the association between SOM clusters and CFI. For example, participants living in the high N-SES and high air pollution cluster had CFI scores 0.05 (95 %-CI:0.01,0.09) points higher on average compared to those from the high N-SES and low air pollution cluster; after adjusting for depression, this association was attenuated to 0.01 (95 %-CI:-0.04,0.05). HBP mediated up to 8 % of the association between SOM clusters and CFI and high cholesterol up to 5 %. Air pollution and N-SES associated cognitive decline was partially mediated by depression. Only a small portion (<10 %) of the association was mediated by HBP and high cholesterol.

Abstract
Recent research suggests that cognitive deficits in individuals with psychotic disorders could be overestimated because poor cognitive test performance is partly attributable to non-cognitive factors. To further test this, we included non-hospitalized individuals with psychotic disorders (PSY, n = 38), individuals with attenuated psychotic symptoms (n = 40), individuals with obsessive-compulsive disorders (n = 39), and healthy controls (n = 38). Relevant cognitive domains were assessed using the MATRICS Consensus Cognitive Battery. Putative confounding non-cognitive factors-heart rate, self-reported stress, negative affect, performance-related beliefs, and actigraphy-derived sleep-were assessed before cognitive testing. A multivariate analysis of covariance was calculated to examine group differences in cognitive performance while controlling for non-cognitive factors. PSY showed decreased test performance in graphomotor speed, attention, and verbal tasks compared to the other groups, whereas non-verbal/visual-spatial tasks were unimpaired. After accounting for non-cognitive factors, group differences diminished in verbal learning, whereas differences in the other domains remained significant. Against our hypotheses, the present findings indicate that some cognitive deficits in PSY cannot be attributed to momentary confounding factors.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Patients with major depressive disorder (MDD) can present with altered brain structure and deficits in cognitive function similar to those seen in aging. However, the interaction between age-related brain changes and brain development in MDD remains understudied. In a cohort of adolescents and adults with and without MDD, we assessed brain aging differences and associations through a newly developed tool that quantifies normative neurodevelopmental trajectories. METHODS A total of 304 participants with MDD and 236 control participants without depression were recruited and scanned from 3 studies under the Canadian Biomarker Integration Network for Depression. Volumetric data were used to generate brain centile scores, which were examined for 1) differences between participants with MDD and control participants; 2) differences between individuals with versus without severe childhood maltreatment; and 3) correlations with depressive symptom severity, neurocognitive assessment domains, and escitalopram treatment response. RESULTS Brain centiles were significantly lower in the MDD group than in the control group. Brain centile was also significantly correlated with working memory in the control group but not the MDD group. No significant associations were observed between depression severity or antidepressant treatment response and brain centiles. Likewise, childhood maltreatment history did not significantly affect brain centiles. CONCLUSIONS Consistent with previous work on machine learning models that predict brain age, brain centile scores differed in people diagnosed with MDD, and MDD was associated with differential relationships between centile scores and working memory. The results support the notion of atypical development and aging in MDD, with implications for neurocognitive deficits associated with aging-related cognitive function.

Abstract
Older age is associated with reduced social networks while social skill abilities are important assets for older people to cope with these situations. To better understand older people's social skill ability and important demographic correlates, the present cross-sectional survey research interviewed 1000 Taiwanese older volunteers from 73 community care centers. Findings of a mixed model indicated that education and serving area outweighed other demographic factors significantly correlated with older volunteers' social skill ability. Latent class analyses further identified different latent ability groups for different education (high vs. low) or serving-area (urban vs. suburban) older volunteers. Specifically, low-education or suburban volunteers were correlated with disadvantageous social skill profiles. Notably, the suburban eclectic ability group exhibited a skill pattern signifying the risk of loneliness. Overall, the findings called for further investigation into the relationship between older people's socioeconomic factors (e.g., education and serving area) and their social skill ability.

Abstract
Background Asking questions is common in conversations, and while asking questions, we need to listen carefully to what others say and consider the perspective our questions adopt. However, difficulties persist in verifying the effect of asking questions on older adults' cognitive function due to the lack of a standardized system for conducting experiments at participants' homes. Objective This study examined the intervention effect of cognitive training moderated by robots on healthy older adults. A focus on the feasibility of the intervention at participants' homes was also maintained. Feasibility was evaluated by considering both the dropout rate during the intervention and the number of questions posed to each participant during the experiment. Methods We conducted a randomized controlled trial with 81 adults older than 65 years. Participants were recruited through postal invitations and then randomized into 2 groups. The intervention group (n=40) received sessions where participants listened to photo-integrated stories and posed questions to the robots. The control group (n=41) received sessions where participants listened to photo-integrated stories and only thanked the robots for confirming participation. The participants participated in 12 dialogue sessions for 2-3 weeks. Scores of global cognitive functioning tests, recall tests, and verbal fluency tasks measured before and after the intervention were compared between the 2 groups. Results There was no significant intervention effect on the Telephone Interview for Cognitive Status-Japanese scores, recall tests, and verbal fluency tasks. Additionally, our study successfully concluded with no participant dropouts at follow-up, confirming the feasibility of our approach. Conclusions There was no statistically significant evidence indicating intervention benefits for cognitive functioning. Although the feasibility of home-based interventions was demonstrated, we identified areas for improvement in the future, such as setting up more efficient session themes. Further research is required to identify the effectiveness of an improved cognitive intervention involving the act of asking questions.

Abstract
Thailand entered an aged society phase in 2000, with mild cognitive impairment (MCI) and frailty becoming prevalent among the older adult population. However, no studies have yet examined these issues specifically within rural communities. This study aims to explore the relationship between frailty and MCI among older adults in rural Thailand. It was a cross-sectional study conducted between December 2022 and June 2023. A questionnaire was administered by trained village health volunteers. The survey targeted older adults aged 60 years and above, residing in rural Chiang Mai, Thailand, with those having a history of dementia, depression, and brain injury being excluded from participation. Nine hundred eighty-four participants among the older adults were available for analysis. The mean age was 69.8 (SD 7.9) with 62.2% females (n = 612). The median frequency of exercise was three days (0-7). The prevalence of MCI and frailty among rural older adults in the community was 35.6% (n = 350) and 8% (n = 79), respectively. There were four factors associated with an increased risk of MCI, including age (aOR = 1.07, 95% CI 1.04-1.09, p < 0.001), smoking cigarettes (aOR 1.95, 95% CI 1.27-2.98, p = 0.002), feelings of loneliness (aOR 1.43, 95% CI 1.01-2.03, p = 0.043), and the presence of frailty (aOR 1.92, 95% CI 1.10-3.35, p = 0.022). There were two factors associated with a lower risk of MCI: a higher education level (aOR 0.90, 95% CI 0.86-0.94, p <0.001) and engaging in frequent exercise (aOR 0.9, 95% CI 0.86-0.95, p < 0.001). Frailty exhibited an association with an elevated risk of MCI among older adults in rural communities. Enhancing screening through health volunteers and primary healthcare professionals, coupled with bolstering community-driven health promotion initiatives, becomes imperative.

Abstract
Prevotella species, notably Prevotella copri, significantly populate the human gut. In particular, P. copri is prevalent among non-Western populations with diets high in fiber. These species show complex relationships with diverse health aspects, associating with beneficial outcomes, including reduced visceral fat and improved glucose tolerance. Studies implicate various Prevotella species in specific diseases. Prevotella nigrescens and Porphyromonas gingivalis were linked to periodontal disease, promoting immune responses and influencing T helper type 17 (Th17) cells. Prevotella bivia was associated with bacterial vaginosis and a specific increase in activated cells in the vaginal mucosa. In contrast, they have shown substantial potential for inducing connective tissue degradation and alveolar bone resorption. Prevotella's role in neuroinflammatory disorders and autoinflammatory conditions such as Alzheimer's disease and Parkinson's disease has also been noted. The complex relationship between Prevotella and age-related conditions further extends to neurobiological changes in aging, with varying associations with Alzheimer's, Parkinson's, and other inflammatory conditions. Studies have also identified Prevotella to be implicated in cognitive decline in middle aged and the elderly. Future directions in this research area are anticipated to explore Prevotella-associated inflammatory mechanisms and therapeutic interventions. Investigating specific drug targets and immunomodulatory measures could lead to novel therapeutic strategies. Understanding how Prevotella-induced inflammation interacts with aging diseases would offer promising insights for treatments and interventions. This review urges ongoing research to discover therapeutic targets and mechanisms for moderating Prevotella-associated inflammation to further enhance our understanding and improve health outcomes.
