Selenium deficiency risk predicted to increase under future climate change

Selenium-enriched yeast, a selenium supplement, improves the rheological properties and processability of dough: From the view of yeast metabolism and gluten alteration

This study investigated the effect mechanism of selenium (Se)-enriched yeast on the rheological properties of dough from the perspective of yeast metabolism and gluten alteration. As the yeast Se content increased, the gas production rate of Se-enriched yeast slowed down, and dough viscoelasticity decreased. The maximum creep of Se-enriched dough increased by 29%, while the final creep increased by 54%, resulting in a softer dough. Non-targeted metabolomics analyses showed that Se inhibited yeast energy metabolism and promoted the synthesis of stress-resistance related components. Glutathione, glycerol, and linoleic acid contributed to the rheological property changes of the dough. The fractions and molecular weight distribution of protein demonstrated that the increase in yeast Se content resulted in the depolymerization of gluten. The intermolecular interactions, fluorescence spectrum and disulfide bond analysis showed that the disruption of intermolecular disulfide bond induced by Se-enriched yeast metabolites played an important role in the depolymerization of gluten.

Emerging investigator series: predicted losses of sulfur and selenium in european soils using machine learning: a call for prudent model interrogation and selection

Reductions in sulfur (S) atmospheric deposition in recent decades have been attributed to S deficiencies in crops. Similarly, global soil selenium (Se) concentrations were predicted to drop, particularly in Europe, due to increases in leaching attributed to increases in aridity. Given its international importance in agriculture, reductions of essential elements, including S and Se, in European soils could have important impacts on nutrition and human health. Our objectives were to model current soil S and Se levels in Europe and predict concentration changes for the 21st century. We interrogated four machine-learning (ML) techniques, but after critical evaluation, only outputs for linear support vector regression (Lin-SVR) models for S and Se and the multilayer perceptron model (MLP) for Se were consistent with known mechanisms reported in literature. Other models exhibited overfitting even when differences in training and testing performance were low or non-existent. Furthermore, our results highlight that similarly performing models based on RMSE or R2 can lead to drastically different predictions and conclusions, thus highlighting the need to interrogate machine learning models and to ensure they are consistent with known mechanisms reported in the literature. Both elements exhibited similar spatial patterns with predicted gains in Scandinavia versus losses in the central and Mediterranean regions of Europe, respectively, by the end of the 21st century for an extreme climate scenario. The median change was -5.5% for S (Lin-SVR) and -3.5% (MLP) and -4.0% (Lin-SVR) for Se. For both elements, modeled losses were driven by decreases in soil organic carbon, S and Se atmospheric deposition, and gains were driven by increases in evapotranspiration.

Tracing isotopically labeled selenium nanoparticles in plants via single-particle ICP-mass spectrometry

Agronomic biofortification using selenium nanoparticles (SeNPs) shows potential for addressing selenium deficiency but further research on SeNPs-plants interaction is required before it can be effectively used to improve nutritional quality. In this work, single-particle inductively coupled plasma-mass spectrometry (SP-ICP-MS) was used for tracing isotopically labeled SeNPs (82SeNPs) in Oryza sativa L. tissues. For this purpose, SeNPs with natural isotopic abundance and 82SeNPs were synthesized by a chemical method. The NPs characterization by transmission electron microscopy (TEM) confirmed that enriched NPs maintained the basic properties of unlabeled NPs, showing spherical shape, monodispersity, and sizes in the nano-range (82.8 ± 6.6 nm and 73.2 ± 4.4 nm for SeNPs and 82SeNPs, respectively). The use of 82SeNPs resulted in an 11-fold enhancement in the detection power for ICP-MS analysis, accompanied by an improvement in the signal-to-background ratio and a reduction of the size limits of detection from 89.9 to 39.9 nm in SP-ICP-MS analysis. This enabled 82SeNPs to be tracked in O. sativa L. plants cultivated under foliar application of 82SeNPs. Tracing studies combining SP-ICP-MS and TEM-energy-dispersive X-ray spectroscopy data confirmed the uptake of intact 82SeNPs by rice leaves, with most NPs remaining in the leaves and very few particles translocated to shoots and roots. Translocation of Se from leaves to roots and shoots was found to be lower when applied as NPs compared to selenite application. From the size distributions, as obtained by SP-ICP-MS, it can be concluded that a fraction of the 82SeNPs remained within the same size range as that of the applied NP suspension, while other fraction underwent an agglomeration process in the leaves, as confirmed by TEM images. This illustrates the potential of SP-ICP-MS analysis of isotopically enriched 82SeNPs for tracing NPs in the presence of background elements within complex plant matrices, providing important information about the uptake, accumulation, and biotransformation of SeNPs in rice plants.

Simultaneously inhibit cadmium and arsenic uptake in rice (Oryza sativa L.) by Selenium enhanced iron plaque: Performance and mechanism

Selenium (Se) fortification is witnessed to simultaneously inhibit absorbing Cadmium (Cd) and Arsenic (As) by rice plants, but the mechanism is unclear. Here, the effects of Se on the root morphology, iron plaque (IP) content, soil Fe2+ content, radial oxygen loss (ROL), and enzyme activities of the rice plants in the soil contaminated by Cd and As were intensively investigated through the hydroponic and soil experiments. Se effectively alleviated the toxic effects of Cd and As on the plants and the dry weight, root length, and root width were increased by 203.18%, 33.41%, and 52.81%, respectively. It also elucidated that ROL was one of the key factors to elevate IP formation by Se and the specific pathways of Se enhancing ROL were identified. ROL of the plants in the experiment group treated by Se was increased 36.76%, and correspondingly IP was magnified 50.37%, compared to the groups with Cd and As. It was owing to Se significantly increased the root porosity (62.11%), facilitating O2 transport to the roots. Additionally, Se enhanced the activities of catalase (CAT) and superoxide dismutase (SOD) to promote the catalytic degradation of ROS induced by Cd and As stress. It indirectly increased O2 release in the rhizosphere, which benefit to form more robust IP serve as stronger barrier to Cd and As. The results of our study provide a novel molecular level insight for Se promoting root IP to block Cd and As uptake by the rice plants.

Agronomic Biofortification of Plants with Iodine and Selenium: A Potential Solution for Iodine and Selenium Deficiencies

Iodine and selenium deficiencies are widespread both in developed countries and developing countries. The soil is the fundamental source of iodine and selenium for plants, and iodine and/or selenium-depleted soil restrains the cultivation of crops to cover recommended daily intakes of iodine and selenium. Although food fortification strategies, including salt iodization, increase the dietary intake of these minerals, their global deficiencies have not been eliminated. Therefore, new strategies have been developed to prevent iodine and selenium deficiencies, and biofortification is one of them. The aim of this review is to assert the outcomes of the studies that investigate the optimum conditions for biofortification with iodine and selenium and to recognize the role of biofortification practices as a potential solution for preventing iodine and selenium deficiencies. The findings of studies show that biofortification with iodine and selenium can be a solution for iodine and selenium deficiencies. Agronomic biofortification is currently a more convenient method to increase selenium and iodine contents in plants. However, the most effective agronomic biofortification conditions are crucial to acquire biofortified food. Moreover, increasing the awareness of the producers and consumers on biofortification has a determinative role in the achievement of biofortification practices for human health. Although research about iodine and selenium biofortification has been increased, the effectiveness of biofortified foods to meet recommended daily intakes is still unknown. More research is needed to understand most effective biofortification conditions for plants and bioavailability of biofortified foods for humans.

Dietary Intakes of Copper and Selenium in Association with Bone Mineral Density

The important trace elements, copper and selenium, have diverse effects on human health. As well as other important roles in living tissues, these trace elements are toxic at high levels but are key constituents of various enzymes and proteins essential for maintaining physiological health. However, links between dietary intakes of these elements, particularly copper, and bone mineral density (BMD) in humans remain uncertain. This study aimed to investigate whether dietary intakes of copper and selenium are associated with BMD in women. Dietary intakes of copper and selenium were assessed for 575 women in the Geelong Osteoporosis Study, using a detailed semi-quantitative food frequency questionnaire in conjunction with nutrition composition databases. Participants taking oral multivitamin preparations were excluded from analyses; 522 participants (ages 20-88 y) met the eligibility criteria. BMD at multiple skeletal sites was measured by dual energy X-ray absorptiometry (Lunar DPX-L). Separate multivariable regression models were developed to identify associations between copper and selenium intakes and BMD, after adjustments for age, anthropometry, other dietary factors, medication use, and lifestyle factors. Median (interquartile range) daily intake for copper was 1.5 mg (1.2-1.9) and for selenium, 72 μg (57-90). Low intakes (lowest tertile versus pooled upper tertiles) of copper and selenium were consistently associated with lower BMD at multiple skeletal sites. Fully adjusted models identified small but statistically significant differences in BMD, ranging from 1.8% to 4.0% for low copper intakes and 1.4% to 4.0% for low selenium intakes. Low dietary intakes of copper and selenium were both independently associated with lower BMD, at least in this sample of women. The results contribute to the evidence base for informing dietary recommendations for these trace elements with respect to their contributions to optimal bone health.

Comprehensive evaluation of factors influencing selenium fertilization biofortification

BACKGROUND

Dietary selenium (Se) deficiency, stemming from low Se concentrations in agricultural products, threatens human health. While Se-containing fertilizers can enhance the Se content in crops, the key factors governing Se biofortification with Se fertilization remain unclear.

RESULTS

This study constructed a global meta-analysis dataset based on field experiments comprising 364 entries on Se content in agricultural products and 271 entries on their yield. Random forest models and mixed effects meta-analyses revealed that plant types (i.e., cereals, vegetables, legumes, and forages) primarily influenced Se biofortification, with Se fertilization rates being the next significant factor. The random forest model, which included variables like plant types, Se fertilization rates, methods and types of Se application, initial soil conditions (including Se content, organic carbon content, and pH), soil types, mean annual precipitation, and temperature, explained 82.14% of the variation in Se content and 48.42% of the yield variation in agricultural products. For the same agricultural products, the increase in Se content decreased with higher rates of Se fertilization. The increase in Se content in their edible parts will be negligible for cereals, forages, legumes, and vegetable crops, when Se fertilization rates were 164, 103, 144, and 147 g Se ha-1, respectively. Conversely, while low Se fertilization rates enhanced yields, high rates led to a yield reduction, particularly in cereals.

CONCLUSION

Our findings highlight the need for balanced and precise Se fertilization strategies to optimize Se biofortification benefits and minimize the risk of yield reduction. © 2024 Society of Chemical Industry.

Selenoprotein H mediates low selenium-related cognitive decline through impaired oligodendrocyte myelination with disrupted hippocampal lipid metabolism in female mice

Low selenium levels are closely associated with reduced cognitive performance and lipid dysregulation, yet the mechanism of action remains unclear. The physiological function of selenium is primarily mediated by selenoproteins. Selenoprotein H (SELENOH), as one of the selenium-containing proteins, has an unelucidated role in regulating cognitive status and lipid metabolism. In this study, we established a Selenoh gene knockout (HKO) mouse model to investigate whether Selenoh mediates the impact of selenium on cognitive function. We found that HKO mice showed a significant decline in cognition compared with the wild-type (HWT) littermates, and were not affected by deficient or excessive selenium, while no differences in anxiety and depression behavior were observed. HKO mice showed reduced myelin basic protein expression in hippocampal oligodendrocytes, with decreased glycolipid levels and increased phospholipid and sphingolipid levels in the hippocampus. Furthermore, the high-fat diet (HFD) exerted no effect on cognition and limited impact on the gene profile in the hippocampus of HKO mice. Compared with those of HWT mice, the myelination pathways in the hippocampus of HKO mice were downregulated as revealed by RNA-seq, which was further confirmed by the reduced expression levels of myelin-related proteins. Finally, HKO increased the expression of hippocampal fatty acid transporter (FATP) 4, and HFD increased the FATP4 expression in HWT mice but not in HKO mice. In summary, our study demonstrated that HKO induced cognitive decline by impairing myelination in oligodendrocytes with disrupted hippocampal lipid metabolism, which provided a novel viewpoint on the selenoprotein-mediated neurodegenerative diseases of selenium.

Liposomes as selenium nanocarriers for foliar application to wheat plants: A biofortification strategy

In the present work, liposomes have been used as nanocarriers in the biofortification of wheat plants with selenium (Se) through foliar application. Liposomal formulations were prepared using 1,2-dipalmitoyl-sn-glycero-3-phosphocholine (DPPC) and Phospholipon®90H (P90H) (average size <100 nm), loaded with different concentrations of inorganic Se (selenite and selenate) and applied twice to the plants in the stage of vegetative growth. Liposomes enhanced Se uptake by wheat plants compared to direct application. The highest Se enrichment was achieved using the phospholipid DPPC and a concentration of 1000 μmol·L-1 of Se without affecting the biomass, chlorophylls, carotenoids, and the concentration of mineral nutrients of the plants. The chemical speciation of Se in the plants was further investigated by X-ray absorption spectroscopy (XAS). The results from XAS spectra revealed that most of the inorganic Se was transformed to organic Se and that the use of liposomes influenced the proportion of C-Se-C over C-Se-Se-C species.

Maternal selenium deficiency during pregnancy in association with autism and ADHD traits in children: The Odense Child Cohort

BACKGROUND

Selenoproteins regulate pathways controlling neurodevelopment, e.g., redox signaling and thyroid hormone metabolism. However, studies investigating maternal selenium in relation to child neurodevelopmental disorders are scarce.

METHODS

719 mother-child pairs from the prospective population-based Odense Child Cohort study in Denmark were included. Three selenium biomarkers, i.e. concentrations of serum selenium, selenoprotein P (SELENOP), and activity of glutathione peroxidase 3 (GPX3), along with serum copper, zinc and iron were measured in early third trimester (at 28.9+/-0.8 weeks of pregnancy). ADHD and ASD traits in children were assessed systematically using the established Child Behaviour Checklist at 5 years of age, based on a Danish reference cohort with cut-off at 90th percentile. Multivariable regression models adjusted for biologically relevant confounders were applied.

RESULTS

155 of 719 (21.6 %) children had ASD traits and 59 of 719 (8.2 %) children had traits of ADHD at 5 years of age. In crude and adjusted models, all three selenium biomarkers associated inversely with ADHD traits. For ADHD, fully adjusted OR for 10 μg/L increment in selenium was 0.76 (95 % CI 0.60, 0.94), for one mg/L increment in SELENOP was 0.73 (0.56, 0.95), and for 10 U/L increment in GPx3 was 0.93 (0.87,1.00). Maternal total selenium was inversely associated with child ASD traits, OR per 10 μg/L increment was 0.85 (0.74, 0,98). SELENOP and GPx3 were not associated with ASD traits. The associations were specific to selenium, as other trace elements such as copper, zinc, or iron were not associated with the outcomes.

CONCLUSIONS

The results provide coherent evidence for selenium deficiency as a risk factor for ADHD and ASD traits in an environment with borderline supply, the causality of which should be elucidated in a randomized controlled trial.

The Impact of Organic Selenium (IV) on Hypericum perforatum L. under Cadmium Stress and Non-Stress Conditions

The issue of soil contamination by heavy metals is widely acknowledged. Some plants, including medicinal species like St. John's wort (Hypericum perforatum L.), exhibit accumulation traits, allowing them to accumulate elevated levels of metals, e.g., cadmium (Cd), within their cells. Selenium (Se) may increase the tolerance of plants to abiotic stress caused by the presence of heavy metal in the environment. Depending on its form (oxidation state, organic/inorganic), Se influences plant growth, secondary metabolite content, and biotic stress, as well as incorporates into shoots, providing economic and health benefits for consumers. So far, there are no data on the influence of organic Se(IV) on plants. Our study aimed to determine the effect of organic Se(IV) on the growth, active compound levels (anthranoids, polyphenols), and ultrastructure of St. John's wort without and under cadmium stress. The phytochemical analysis and microscopic examination was performed on shoots from different days of St. John's wort in vitro culture on a few variants of Murashige and Skoog medium with Cd (25 and 400 µM) and/or organic Se (IV). Exposure to Se(IV) did not affect hypericins but increased the polyphenol content in the shoots and the biomass. Se(IV) caused an increase in starch grain number in chloroplasts, whereas Cd exposure resulted in the degradation of the chloroplast structure, increased cell vacuolation, as well as swollen mitochondrial cristae. The addition of Se(IV) to these combinations reduced the degree of degradation and growth inhibition and a high content of Se(IV) in plants was observed. Se(IV) had no impact on Cd content at environmental Cd concentrations, but showed an effect at extremely high Cd concentrations. Thus, organic Se(IV) has a beneficial effect on St. John's wort growth, polyphenol content, and incorporation in shoots and prevents Cd toxicity. Media enriched with organic Se(IV) have both economic advantages and health benefits due to a higher plant growth rate and increased concentrations of polyphenols with strong antioxidant properties, relatively enriched with Se. However, organic Se(IV) should be used with caution in polluted areas. In perspective, speciation analysis and molecular study are crucial to understand the fate and effect of Se (IV) on plants.

Ionomic Profile of Rice Seedlings after Foliar Application of Selenium Nanoparticles

Nanotechnology has been increasingly used in plant sciences, with engineered nanoparticles showing promising results as fertilizers or pesticides. The present study compared the effects in the foliar application of Se nanoparticles (SeNPs) or sodium selenite-Se(IV) on rice seedlings. The degree of plant growth, photosynthetic pigment content, and concentrations of Se, Na, Mg, K, Ca, Mn, Co, Cu, Zn, As, Cd, and Pb were evaluated. The results showed that the application of SeNPs at high concentrations (5 mg L-1), as well as the application of Se(IV), inhibited plant growth and increased the root concentrations of As and Pb. The application of SeNPs at 0.5 mg L-1 significantly increased Se accumulation in the aerial part from 0.161 ± 0.028 mg kg-1 to 0.836 ± 0.097 mg kg-1 without influencing physiological, chemical, or biochemical parameters. When applied to leaves, SeNPs tended to remain in the aerial part, while the application of Se(IV) caused a higher Se translocation from the shoots to the roots. This study provides useful information concerning the uptake, accumulation, and translocation of different Se formulations in rice seedlings and their effect on plant ionomic profiles, thus showing that the foliar application of SeNPs at low concentrations can be an effective and safe alternative for rice biofortification.

Assessment of trace element and mineral levels in students from Turkmenistan in comparison to Iran and Russia

THE OBJECTIVE

Of the present study was to assess essential trace element and mineral levels in serum, hair, and urine of healthy first-year students from Turkmenistan (n = 73) in comparison to students from Iran (n = 78) or Russia (n = 95).

MATERIALS AND METHODS

Examination of foreign students was performed within two days after arrival to Russia during medical examination prior admission to RUDN University. Serum, hair, and urine trace element and mineral levels were assessed with inductively coupled plasma-mass spectrometry (ICP-MS).

RESULTS

The data demonstrate that the levels of trace elements and minerals in students from Turkmenistan share high similarity to elemental profiles of students from Iran. In comparison to students from Russia, subjects originating from Iran and Turkmenistan are characterized by lower serum cobalt (Co), chromium (Cr), copper (Cu), manganese (Mn), molybdenum (Mo), selenium (Se), vanadium (V), zinc (Zn) levels, higher urinary Cr, Cu, Fe, Mn, V, and Zn, lower urinary Co and hair Mo, Se, and Zn content. Concomitantly, students from Turkmenistan were characterized by lower urinary Cr and Cu, serum Cu and V levels, higher circulating Zn concentration, as well as the lower hair Cr, Cu, iodine (I) and magnesium (Mg) content in comparison to Iranian subjects. The discriminant analysis demonstrated that hair, serum, and urinary trace element and mineral levels contributed to complete discrimination between the groups of students from different countries.

CONCLUSIONS

The high similarity of trace element and mineral status of students from Turkmenistan and Iran is expected to be mediated by similar geochemical conditions in the bordering countries.

Genetic Biofortification of Winter Wheat with Selenium (Se)

Wheat is one of the three most important cereals in the world, along with rice and maize. It serves as the primary food and source of energy for about 30-40% of the world's population. However, the low levels of micronutrients in wheat grains can lead to deficiencies of those micronutrients in people whose dietary habits are mostly based on cereals such as wheat. Apart from iron (Fe) and zinc (Zn), a lack of selenium (Se) is also one of the biggest problems in the world. The essentiality of Se has been confirmed for all animals and humans, and the lack of this micronutrient can cause serious health issues. Wheat dominates the world's cereal production, so it is one of the best plants for biofortification. Due to the fact that agronomic biofortification is not an economical or environmentally acceptable approach, genetic improvement of cereals such as wheat for the enhanced content of micronutrients in the grain represents the most efficient biofortification approach.

Investigation of selenium and selenium species in Cardamine violifolia using in vitro digestion coupled with a Caco-2 cell monolayer model

Inadequate Se intake can enhance vulnerability to certain health risks, with supplementation lessening these risks. This study investigated the bioavailability of Se and Se species in five Se compounds and in Se-rich Cardamine violifolia using in vitro digestion coupled with a Caco-2 cell monolayer model, which enabled the study of Se transport and uptake. Translocation results showed that SeCys2 and MeSeCys had high translocation rates in C. violifolia leaves (CVLs). The uptake rate of organic Se increased with time, and MeSeCys exhibited a higher uptake rate than that for SeCys2 and SeMet. The translocation mechanisms of SeMet, Se(IV), and Se(VI) were passive transport, whereas those of SeCys2 and MeSeCys were active transport. The bioavailability of organic Se was higher than that of inorganic Se, with a total Se bioavailability in CVLs of 49.11 %. This study would provide a theoretical basis for the application of C. violifolia in the functional food.

The impact of environmental factors and contaminants on thyroid function and disease from fetal to adult life: current evidence and future directions

The thyroid gland regulates most of the physiological processes. Environmental factors, including climate change, pollution, nutritional changes, and exposure to chemicals, have been recognized to impact thyroid function and health. Thyroid disorders and cancer have increased in the last decade, the latter increasing by 1.1% annually, suggesting that environmental contaminants must play a role. This narrative review explores current knowledge on the relationships among environmental factors and thyroid gland anatomy and function, reporting recent data, mechanisms, and gaps through which environmental factors act. Global warming changes thyroid function, and living in both iodine-poor areas and volcanic regions can represent a threat to thyroid function and can favor cancers because of low iodine intake and exposure to heavy metals and radon. Areas with high nitrate and nitrite concentrations in water and soil also negatively affect thyroid function. Air pollution, particularly particulate matter in outdoor air, can worsen thyroid function and can be carcinogenic. Environmental exposure to endocrine-disrupting chemicals can alter thyroid function in many ways, as some chemicals can mimic and/or disrupt thyroid hormone synthesis, release, and action on target tissues, such as bisphenols, phthalates, perchlorate, and per- and poly-fluoroalkyl substances. When discussing diet and nutrition, there is recent evidence of microbiome-associated changes, and an elevated consumption of animal fat would be associated with an increased production of thyroid autoantibodies. There is some evidence of negative effects of microplastics. Finally, infectious diseases can significantly affect thyroid function; recently, lessons have been learned from the SARS-CoV-2 pandemic. Understanding how environmental factors and contaminants influence thyroid function is crucial for developing preventive strategies and policies to guarantee appropriate development and healthy metabolism in the new generations and for preventing thyroid disease and cancer in adults and the elderly. However, there are many gaps in understanding that warrant further research.

Soil respiration induces co-emission of greenhouse gases and methylated selenium from cold-region Mollisols: Significance for selenium deficiency

Mollisols rich in natural organic matter are a significant sink of carbon (C) and selenium (Se). Climate warming and agricultural expansion to the cold Mollisol regions may enhance soil respiration and biogeochemical cycles, posing a growing risk of soil C and Se loss. Through field-mimicking incubation experiments with uncultivated and cultivated soils from the Mollisol regions of northeastern China, this research shows that soil respiration remained significant even during cold seasons and caused co-emission of greenhouse gases (CO2 and CH4) and methylated Se. Such stimulus effects were generally stronger in the cultivated soils, with maximum emission rates of 7.45 g/m2/d C and 1.42 μg/m2/d Se. For all soil types, the greatest co-emission of CO2 and dimethyl selenide occurred at 25 % soil moisture, whereas measurable CH4 emission was observed at 40 % soil moisture with higher percentages of dimethyl diselenide volatilization. Molecular characterization with three-dimensional fluorescence and ultra-high resolution mass spectrometry suggests that CO2 emission is sensitive to the availability of microbial protein-like substances and free energy from organic carbon biodegradation under variable moisture conditions. Predominant Se binding to biodegradable organic matter resulted in high dependence of Se volatilization on rates of greenhouse gas emissions. These findings together highlight the importance of dynamic organic carbon quality for soil respiration and consequent Mollisol Se loss risk, with implications for science-based management of C and Se resources in agricultural lands to combat with Se deficiency.

The correlation between selenium intake and lung function in asthmatic people: a cross-sectional study

Objective

This study aimed to examine the correlation between selenium intake and lung function in asthmatic people.

Methods

A total of 4,541 individuals in the US National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey (NHANES) were included in this study. Multivariate linear regression, variance inflation factor, restricted cubic splines and quantile regression were used to analyze the relationship between Se intake and lung function. We divided selenium intake into four levels based on quartiles: Q1: Se ≤ 76.75 mcg/d; Q2: 76.75-105.1 mcg/d; Q3: 105.1-137.65 mcg/d; and Q4: Se ≥137.65 mcg/d.

Results

Asthma was negatively associated with the Ratio of Forced Expiratory Volume 1st Second to Forced Vital Capacity (FEV1/FVC) (β = -0.04, 95% CI: -0.06 to -0.02) and FEV1 (β = -215, 95% CI: -340 to -90). Se intake was positively associated with Forced Expiratory Volume 1st Second (FEV1) (β =3.30 95% CI: 2.60 to 4.00) and Forced Vital Capacity (FVC) (β =4.30, 95% CI: 3.50 to 5.10). In asthmatic individuals, the positive effects of Se intake on FVC were enhanced with increasing Se intake, while the positive effects of Se intake on FEV1 varied less dramatically. High Se intake (Q4 level, above 137.65 mcg/d) improved FVC (β = 353, 95% CI: 80 to 626) and FEV1 (β = 543, 95% CI: 118 to 969) in asthmatic patients compared to low Se intake (Q1 level, below 76.75 mcg/d). At the Q2 level (76.75-105.1 mcg/d) and Q4 level (Se ≥137.65 mcg/d) of Se intake, the correlation between FEV1 and asthma disappeared.

Conclusion

Our research has revealed a positive correlation between selenium intake and lung function in asthma patients and the strength of this positive correlation is related to the amount of selenium intake. We recommend that asthma patients consume 137.65 mcg to 200 mcg of selenium daily to improve pulmonary function while avoiding the adverse effects of selenium on the human body.

Stratum affects the distribution of soil selenium bioavailability by modulating the soil physicochemical properties: A case study in a Se-enriched area, China

The soil selenium (Se) content and bioavailability are important for human health. In this regard, knowing the factors driving the concentration of total Se and bioavailable Se in soils is essential to map Se, enhance foodstuffs' Se content, and improve the Se nutritional status of humans. In this study, total Se and Se bioavailability (i.e., phosphate extracted Se) in surface soils (0-20 cm) developed on different strata were analyzed in a Se-enriched region of Southwest China. Furthermore, the interaction between the stratum and soil properties was assessed and how did the stratum effect on the concentration and spatial distribution of Se bioavailability in soils was investigated. Results showed that the median concentration of total Se in soils was 0.308 mg/kg, which is higher than China's soil background. The mean proportion of phosphate extracted Se in total Se was 12.2 %. The values of total Se, phosphate extracted Se, and soil organic matter (SOM) in soils increased with the increasing stratum age. In contrast, the coefficient of weathering and eluviation (BA) values decreased. The analysis of statistics and Geodetector revealed that the SOM, stratum, and BA were the dominant controlling factors for the contents and distributions of soil total Se and phosphate extracted Se. This study provided strong evidence that the soil properties that affected the total Se and Se bioavailability were modulated by the local geological background, and had important practical implications for addressing Se malnutrition and developing the Se-rich resource in the study region and similar geological settings in different parts of the globe.

Effect of dietary selenium intake on CVD: a retrospective cohort study based on China Health and Nutrition Survey (CHNS) data

OBJECTIVE

We aimed to examine the association between dietary Se intake and CVD risk in Chinese adults.

DESIGN

This prospective cohort study included adults above 20 years old in the China Health and Nutrition Survey (CHNS), and they were followed up from 1997 to 2015 (n 16 030). Dietary data were retrieved from CHNS, and a 3-d, 24-h recall of food intake was used to assess the cumulative average intake of dietary Se, which was divided into quartiles. The Cox proportional hazards model was adopted to analyse the association between dietary Se intake and incident CVD risk.

SETTING

CHNS (1991, 1993, 1997, 2000, 2004, 2006, 2009, 2011 and 2015).

RESULTS

A total of 663 respondents developed CVD after being followed up for a mean of 9·9 years (median 9 years). The incidence of CVD was 4·3, 3·7, 4·6 and 4·0 per 1000 person-years across the quartiles of cumulative Se intake. After adjusting all potential factors, no significant associations were found between cumulative Se intake and CVD risk. No interactions were found between Se intake and income, urbanisation, sex, region, weight, hypertension and CVD risk.

CONCLUSION

We found no association between dietary Se and CVD.

Hotspot mapping and risk prediction of fluoride in natural waters across the Tibetan Plateau

Intake of high fluoride concentrations through water affects up to 1 billion people worldwide, and the Tibetan Plateau (TP) is one of the most severely affected areas. Knowledge regarding the high fluoride risk areas, the driving factors, and at-risk populations on the TP remains fragmented. We collected 1581 natural water samples from the TP to model surface water and groundwater fluoride hazard maps using machine learning. The geomean concentrations of surface water and groundwater were 0.26 mg/L and 0.92 mg/L, respectively. Surface water fluoride hazard hotspots were concentrated in the north-central region; high fluoride risk areas of groundwater were mainly concentrated in the southern TP. Hazard maps showed a maximum estimate of 15% of the total population in the TP (approximately 1.47 million people) at risk, and 500,000 people considered the most reasonable estimate. Critical environment driving factors were identified, in which climate condition was taken for the vital one. Under the moderate climate change scenario (SSP2.45) for 2089-2099, the high fluoride risk change rate differed inside the TP (surface water -24%-55% and groundwater -56%-50%), and the overall risk increased in natural waters throughout the TP, particularly in the southeastern TP.

Insight into the availability and desorption kinetics of Se and Cd in naturally-rich soils using diffusive gradients in thin-films technique

Cadmium (Cd) contamination of selenium (Se)-rich soils may jeopardize the nutritional benefits of Se-biofortified crops. This study employed diffusive gradients in thin-films (DGT) technique and DIFS (DGT-induced fluxes in soils) model to understand the interdependency and driving factors of Se and Cd distribution and desorption kinetics across 50 soils from south China with naturally elevated levels. DGT-labile Se was the highest (up to 2.66 μg L-1) in non-carbonate/shale-derived soils, while Cd was maximal (5.53 μg L-1) in carbonate-based soils, reflecting soil background concentrations and soil characteristics. Over one-third of the soils showed labile Se:Cd molar ratio below 0.7, suggesting Cd phytotoxicity risks. The DIFS-derived response times (Tc) and desorption rate constants (k-1) suggested that Se was resupplied to the soil solution faster than Cd in soils with higher pH and SOM level, but Se resupply was still restricted due to the rapid depletion of its labile pool. As the first study of Se and Cd release kinetics in soils, our results reveal dependence on soil parent materials, with low labile Se:Cd soils presenting greater Cd hazards. By elucidating Se and Cd lability and interactions in soils, our findings help to inform management strategies to balance reduced Cd risk with adequate Se availability.

Spatial distribution and main drivers of soil selenium in Taihu Lake Basin, Southeast China

Selenium (Se) is an essential micronutrient that is both hazardous and beneficial to living organisms. However, few studies have examined soil Se distribution and its driving mechanisms on a large basin scale. Thus, multivariate statistics, geostatistics, boosted regression trees, and structural equation models were used to investigate the spatial distribution, driving factors, and multivariate interactions of soil Se based on 1753 topsoil samples (0-20 cm) from the Taihu Lake Basin. The results indicated that the soil Se concentration ranged from 0.12 to 57.26 mg kg-1, with a mean value of 0.90 mg kg-1. Overall, the spatial pattern of soil Se gradually decreased from south to north with approximately 1.06% of the soil contaminated with Se. Moisture index (MI), soil moisture (SM), and ≥ 0 ℃ accumulative temperature (AAT0) were the main determinants of soil Se accumulation. Additionally, the substantial effect of SM∩AAT0 on soil Se concentrations demonstrated that climate-soil interactions largely governed the spatial pattern of soil Se. The Se-enriched and Se-contaminated soils occurred mainly in regions with high precipitation, MI, SM, AAT0, and soil organic matter. This study provides a theoretical basis and practical guidance for the remediation of soil Se contamination and the sustainable development of Se-enriched agriculture.

Selenium volatilization in plants, microalgae, and microorganisms

The augmented prevalence of Se (Se) pollution can be attributed to various human activities, such as mining, coal combustion, oil extraction and refining, and agricultural irrigation. Although Se is vital for animals, humans, and microorganisms, excessive concentrations of this element can give rise to potential hazards. Consequently, numerous approaches have been devised to mitigate Se pollution, encompassing physicochemical techniques and bioremediation. The recognition of Se volatilization as a potential strategy for mitigating Se pollution in contaminated environments is underscored in this review. This study delves into the volatilization mechanisms in various organisms, including plants, microalgae, and microorganisms. By assessing the efficacy of Se removal and identifying the rate-limiting steps associated with volatilization, this paper provides insightful recommendations for Se mitigation. Constructed wetlands are a cost-effective and environmentally friendly alternative in the treatment of Se volatilization. The fate, behavior, bioavailability, and toxicity of Se within complex environmental systems are comprehensively reviewed. This knowledge forms the basis for developing management plans that aimed at mitigating Se contamination in wetlands and protecting the associated ecosystems.

Impacts, causes and biofortification strategy of rice selenium deficiency based on publication collection

Selenium (Se) deficiency in rice will result in a Se hidden hunger threat to the general public's human health, particularly in areas where rice consumption is high. Nevertheless, the impact scope and coping strategies have not been given sufficient focus on a worldwide scale. In order to evaluate the impacts, causes and biofortification strategies of Se-deficient rice, this study collected data from the publications on three themes: market survey, field sampling and controlled experiments. According to the market survey, global rice Se concentrations were 0.079 mg/kg on mean and 0.062 mg/kg on median. East Asia has a human Se intake gap due to the region's high rice consumption and the lowest rice Se concentration in markets globally. Total Se concentrations in East Asian paddy soils were found to be adequate based on the field sampling. However, over 70 % of East Asian paddy fields were inadequate to yield rice that met the global mean for rice Se concentration. The Se-deficient rice was probably caused by widespread low Se bioavailability in East Asian paddy fields. There were two important factors influencing rice Se enrichment including root Se uptake and iron oxide in soils. Concentrating on these processes is beneficial to rice Se biofortification. Since Se is adequate in the paddy soils of East Asia. Rather of adding Se exogenously, activating the native Se in paddy soil is probably a more appropriate strategy for rice Se biofortification in East Asia. Meta-analysis revealed water management had the greatest impact on rice Se biofortification. The risks and solutions for rice Se deficiency were discussed in our farmland-to-table survey, which will be a valuable information in addressing the global challenge of Se hidden hunger. This study also provided new perspectives and their justifications, critically analyzing both present and future strategies to address Se hidden hunger.

Biofortification with selenium as an alternative to increase the total phenolic compounds in brassicas: a systematic review and meta-analysis

The ability of brassicas to accumulate selenium is crucial for their positive effects on health. Selenium improves the immune system and the antioxidant defenses. Selenium biofortification of brassicas has therefore been explored to increase dietary selenium intake in humans. However, the effects of selenium biofortification on bioactive compounds, mainly phenolic compounds, are not clear. So, this systematic review and meta-analysis aimed to answer the question 'What are effects of the biofortification of brassicas with selenium on total phenolic compounds?' Ten studies, which assessed the effect of selenium biofortification on total phenolic compounds, were selected for qualitative synthesis and four studies were included in the meta-analysis after a thorough literature review of the PubMed, Science Direct, and Web of Knowledge databases. The quality of the evidence ranged from high to moderate. The meta-analysis results indicated that the total phenolic compound content was significantly higher (P = 0.002) in the supplemented group but the results showed considerable heterogeneity (P < 0.00001, I2  = 97%) between studies. This systematic review and meta-analysis summarizes the effect of Se biofortification on the increase in the content of total phenolic compounds and it suggests that several factors can affect this relationship. © 2023 Society of Chemical Industry.

Selenium - An environmentally friendly micronutrient in agroecosystem in the modern era: An overview of 50-year findings

Agricultural productivity is constantly being forced to maintain yield stability to feed the enormously growing world population. However, shrinking arable and nutrient-deprived soil and abiotic and biotic stressor (s) in different magnitudes put additional challenges to achieving global food security. Though well-defined, the concept of macro, micronutrients, and beneficial elements is from a plant nutritional perspective. Among various micronutrients, selenium (Se) is essential in small amounts for the life cycle of organisms, including crops. Selenium has the potential to improve soil health, leading to the improvement of productivity and crop quality. However, Se possesses an immense encouraging phenomenon when supplied within the threshold limit, also having wide variations. The supplementation of Se has exhibited promising outcomes in lessening biotic and abiotic stress in various crops. Besides, bulk form, nano-Se, and biogenic-Se also revealed some merits and limitations. Literature suggests that the possibilities of biogenic-Se in stress alleviation and fortifying foods are encouraging. In this article, apart from adopting a combination of a conventional extensive review of the literature and bibliometric analysis, the authors have assessed the journey of Se in the "soil to spoon" perspective in a diverse agroecosystem to highlight the research gap area. There is no doubt that the time has come to seriously consider the tag of beneficial elements associated with Se, especially in the drastic global climate change era.

Synergistic effects of T-2 toxin and selenium deficiency exacerbate renal fibrosis through modulation of the ERα/PI3K/Akt signaling pathway

As common pathogenic agents in the world and widely distributed globally, T-2 toxin and selenium deficiency might exacerbate toxic effects by combined exposure, posing a dramatic health hazard to humans and animals. In this study, we aim to elucidate the underlying mechanisms of renal fibrosis triggered by T-2 toxin and selenium deficiency exposure. A total of thirty-two rats are randomly divided into the normal control, T-2 toxin, selenium deficiency, and combined intervention groups. T-2 toxin (100 ng/g) is intragastric gavaged to the rats in compliance with the body weight. Both the standard (containing selenium 0.20 mg/Kg) and selenium-deficient (containing selenium 0.02 mg/Kg) diets were manufactured adhering to the AIN-93 formula. After 12 weeks of intervention, renal tissue ultrastructural and pathological changes, inflammatory infiltration, epithelial mesenchymal transition (EMT), and extracellular matrix (ECM) deposition are evaluated, respectively. Metabolomics analysis is conducted to explore the underlying pathology of renal fibrosis, followed by the validation of potential mechanisms at gene and protein levels. T-2 toxin and selenium deficiency exposure results in podocyte foot process elongation or fusion, tubular vacuolization and dilatation, and collagen deposition in the kidneys. Additionally, it also increases inflammatory infiltration, EMT conversion, and ECM deposition. Metabolomics analysis suggests that T-2 toxin and selenium deficiency influence amino acid and cholesterol metabolism, respectively, and the estrogen signaling pathway is probably engaged in renal fibrosis progression. Moreover, T-2 toxin and selenium deficiency are found to regulate the expressions of the ERα/PI3K/Akt signaling pathway. In conclusion, T-2 toxin and selenium deficiency synergistically exacerbate renal fibrosis through regulating the ERα/PI3K/Akt signaling pathway, and inflammatory infiltration, EMT and ECM deposition are involved in this process.

Nut Consumption and Fertility: a Systematic Review and Meta-Analysis

The high concentration of omega-3 polyunsaturated fats, dietary fibers, vitamins, minerals, and polyphenols found in nuts suggest their regular consumption may be a simple strategy for improving reproductive health. This systematic review and meta-analysis aimed to present up-to-date evidence regarding the association between nut intake and fertility outcomes in males and females. Ovid MEDLINE, Embase, CINAHL, and Scopus were searched from inception to 30 June 2023. Eligible articles were interventional or observational studies in human subjects of reproductive age (18-49 y) that assessed the effects (or association) of dietary nut consumption (for a minimum of 3 mo) on fertility-related outcomes. Random-effects meta-analyses were completed to produce a pooled effect estimate of nut consumption on sperm total motility, vitality, morphology, and concentration in healthy males. Four studies involving 875 participants (646 males, 229 females) were included in this review. Meta-analysis of 2 RCTs involving 223 healthy males indicated consumption of ≥ 60g nuts/d increased sperm motility, vitality, and morphology in comparison to controls but had no effect on sperm concentration. Nonrandomized studies reported no association between dietary nut intake and conventional sperm parameters in males, embryo implantation, clinical pregnancy or live birth in males and females undergoing ART. Our meta-analysis shows that including at least 2 servings of nuts daily as part of a Western-style diet in healthy males improves sperm parameters, which are predictors of male fertility. Due to their nutritional profile, nuts were found to have potential to promote successful reproductive outcomes. This trial was registered at PROSPERO (CRD42020204586).

Maternal suboptimal selenium intake and low-level lead exposure affect offspring's microglial immune profile and its reactivity to a subsequent inflammatory hit

Micronutrients such as selenium (Se) are essentials since prenatal life to support brain and cognitive development. Se deficiency, which affects up to 1 billion people worldwide, can interact with common adverse environmental challenges including (Pb), exacerbating their toxic effects. Exploiting our recently validated rat model of maternal Se restriction and developmental low Pb exposure, our aims were to investigate: (i) the early consequences of suboptimal Se intake and low-Pb exposure on neuroinflammation in neonates' whole brains; (ii) the potential priming effect of suboptimal Se and low-Pb exposure on offspring's glial reactivity to a further inflammatory hit. To these aims female rats were fed with suboptimal (0.04 mg/kg; Subopt) and optimal (0.15 mg/kg; Opt) Se dietary levels throughout pregnancy and lactation and exposed or not to environmentally relevant Pb dose in drinking water (12.5 µg/mL) since 4 weeks pre-mating. We found an overall higher basal expression of inflammatory markers in neonatal brains, as well as in purified microglia and organotypic hippocampal slice cultures, from the Subopt Se offspring. Subopt/Pb cultures were highly activated than Subopt cultures and showed a higher susceptibility to the inflammatory challenge lipopolysaccharide than cultures from the Opt groups. We demonstrate that even a mild Se deficiency and low-Pb exposure during brain development can influence the neuroinflammatory tone of microglia, exacerbate the toxic effects of Pb and prime microglial reactivity to subsequent inflammatory stimuli. These neuroinflammatory changes may be responsible, at least in part, for adverse neurodevelopmental outcomes.

Environmental selenium volatilization is possibly conferred by promiscuous reactions of the sulfur metabolism

Selenium deficiency affects many million people worldwide and volatilization of biogenically methylated selenium species to the atmosphere may limit Se entering the food chain. However, there is very little systematic data on volatilization at nanomolar concentrations prevalent in pristine natural environments. Pseudomonas tolaasii cultures efficiently methylated Se at these concentrations. Nearly perfect linear correlations between the spiked Se concentrations and Dimethylselenide, Dimethyldiselenide, Dimethylselenylsulfide and 2-hydroxy-3-(methylselanyl)propanoic acid were observed up to 80 nM. The efficiency of methylation increased linearly with increasing initial Se concentration, arguing that the enzymes involved are not constitutive, but methylation proceeds promiscuously via pathways of S methylation. From the ratio of all methylated Se and S species, one can conclude that between 0.30% and 3.48% of atoms were Se promiscuously methylated at such low concentrations. At concentrations higher than 640 nM (∼50 μg/L) a steep increase in methylation and volatilization was observed, which suggested the induction of specific enzymes. Promiscuous methylation at low environmental concentrations calls into question that view that methylated Se in the atmosphere is a result of a purposeful Se metabolism serving detoxification. Rather, the concentrations of methylated Se in the atmosphere may be "coincidental" i.e., determined by the activity of S cycling microorganisms. Further, a steep increase in methylation efficiency when surpassing a certain threshold concentration (here ∼50 μg/L) calls into question that natural methylation can be estimated from high Se spikes in laboratory systems, yet highlights the possibility of using bacterial methylation as an effective remediation strategy for media higher concentrated in Se.

Simulation and prediction for the spatial heterogeneity of soil selenium bioavailability at different stratigraphic scales

Stratigraphic lithology strongly influences the spatial heterogeneity of soil available selenium (ASe), however, it is often neglected in regional simulation. Therefore, taking the Jiangjin District, where the soil is richer in selenium (Se), as the research area, the changes of soil ASe at different spatial scales have been simulated by combining Geodetector and three popular models (Multiple linear regression (MLR), Random forest (RF) and BP neural network (BPN)). The results showed that modelling with 'Formation' as the spatial scale could reduce the influence of stratum lithology difference on the spatial heterogeneity of soil ASe and improve the model's prediction accuracy. Compared with the MLR (R2 = 0.52, root mean squares error (RMSE) = 13.217 μg kg-1) and BPN (R2 = 0.55, RMSE = 13.79 μg kg-1), the RF (R2 = 0.67, RMSE = 10.85 μg kg-1) exhibited higher R2 and smaller RMSE, and the simulation effect of soil ASe is the best in the Middle Jurassic Shaximiao Formation (J2s). The outcomes of variable importance analysis revealed that soil total selenium (TSe) and soil organic matter (SOM) were the imperative factors for predicting ASe. The scenario simulation prediction showed that in the next 40 years, due to the combined influence of SOM and pH, the content of ASe in soil developed in the J2s would decrease from 40.8 μg kg-1 to 37.8 μg kg-1, a 7.8 percent drop. The main areas of soil ASe loss were in the western farming areas. The ASe content in dry land and paddy fields decreased by 12.0% and 4.9%, respectively. Therefore, long-term agricultural production activities would lead to soil ASe loss. The present results could provide a new scheme for the simulation and prediction of regional soil ASe, which is helpful for scientific planning, utilization of selenium-rich soil resources, and development of regional agricultural economy.

Nontarget Chemical Composition of Surface Waters May Reflect Ecosystem Processes More than Discrete Source Contributions

We investigated environmental, landscape, and microbial factors that could structure the spatiotemporal variability in the nontarget chemical composition of four riverine systems in the Oregon Coast Range, USA. We hypothesized that the nontarget chemical composition in river water would be structured by broad-scale landscape gradients in each watershed. Instead, only a weak relationship existed between the nontarget chemical composition and land cover gradients. Overall, the effects of microbial communities and environmental variables on chemical composition were nearly twice as large as those of the landscape, and much of the influence of environmental variables on the chemical composition was mediated through the microbial community (i.e., environment affects microbes, which affect chemicals). Therefore, we found little evidence to support our hypothesis that chemical spatiotemporal variability was related to broad-scale landscape gradients. Instead, we found qualitative and quantitative evidence to suggest that chemical spatiotemporal variability of these rivers is controlled by changes in microbial and seasonal hydrologic processes. While the contributions of discrete chemical sources are undeniable, water chemistry is undoubtedly impacted by broad-scale continuous sources. Our results suggest that diagnostic chemical signatures can be developed to monitor ecosystem processes, which are otherwise challenging or impossible to study with existing off-the-shelf sensors.

Integrative risk assessment method via combining geostatistical analysis, random forest, and receptor models for potentially toxic elements in selenium-rich soil

Revealing the spatial features and source of associated potentially toxic elements (PTEs) is crucial for the safe use of selenium (Se)-rich soils. An integrative risk assessment (GRRRA) approach based on geostatistical analysis (GA), random forest (RF), and receptor models (RMs) was first established to investigate the spatial distribution, sources, and potential ecological risks (PER) of PTEs in 982 soils from Ziyang City, a typical natural Se-rich area in China. RF combined with multiple RMs supported the source apportionment derived from the RMs and provided accurate results for source identification. Then, quantified source contributions were introduced into the risk assessment. Eighty-three percent of the samples contain Cd at a high PER level in local Se-rich soils. GA based on spatial interpolation and spatial autocorrelation showed that soil PTEs have distinct spatial characteristics, and high values are primarily distributed in this research areas. Absolute principal component score/multiple line regression (APCS/MLR) is more suitable than positive matrix factorization (PMF) for source apportionment in this study. RF combined with RMs more accurately and scientifically extracted four sources of soil PTEs: parent material (48.91%), mining (17.93%), agriculture (8.54%), and atmospheric deposition (24.63%). Monte Carlo simulation (MCS) demonstrates a 47.73% probability of a non-negligible risk (RI > 150) caused by parent material and 3.6% from industrial sources, respectively. Parent material (64.20%, RI = 229.56) and mining (16.49%, RI = 58.96) sources contribute to the highest PER of PTEs. In conclusion, the GRRRA method can comprehensively analyze the distribution and sources of soil PTEs and effectively quantify the source contribution to PER, thus providing the theoretical foundation for the secure utilization of Se-rich soils and environmental management and decision making.

A novel slow-release selenium approach for cadmium reduction and selenium enrichment in rice (Oryza sativa L.)

In this study, a novel slightly-soluble selenium (Se) fertilizer (SSF) was successfully applied to address the problems of Cd pollution in paddy soil and rice, and Se deficiency in human beings. The pot and field experiments showed that Cd content in the rice grains was reduced by 48.4%-82.89% and Se content was increased nearly by 30-fold comparing the control group. The application of SSF increased the soil pH and significantly reduced the DGT-extracted Cd in the soil. Moreover, DCB-extractable Fe content on the surface of roots was prompt by SSF, which formed a physical barrier, namely iron plaque (IP), to inhibit Cd translocation to the above-ground tissues of the rice plants. The Cd content in the IP was also decreased before the filling period, possibly contributing to the reduction in major Cd accumulation in the rice grains. In addition, the continuous Se increase and Cd reduction in the IP by the SSF gradually exceeded that of water-soluble Se during the three periods of rice plant growth. This suggests that SSF has high potential to be an effective Se fertilizer for inhibiting Cd uptake and enriching Se in rice.

Topsoil selenium (Se) under Se-rich farming in China: Current status, cropping impacts and ecological risk assessment

Selenium (Se), as an essential microelement, can be supplied through Se-biofortified food from Se-rich soils and associated farming practices for human health, while it can also cause eco-risks if overapplied. In this study, a multi-scale spatiotemporal meta-analysis was conducted to guide sustainable Se-rich farming in China by combining a long-term survey with a reviewed database. The weighted mean concentration, spatial distribution of soil Se, nationwide topsoil Se variation from cropping impacts and its bioavailability-based ecological risks were assessed and quantified. The results showed that the weighted mean content (0.3 mg kg-1) of China was slightly higher than that of previous nationwide topsoil Se surveys, as more Se-rich areas were found in recent high-density sampling surveys. Cropping has overall reduced Se content by 9.5% from farmland across China and deprived more with the increase in farming rotation driven by geo-climatic conditions. Long-term cropping removed Se from Se-rich areas but accumulated it in Se-deficient areas. Additionally, the bioavailable Se content of topsoil in China ranged from 0 to 332 μg kg-1, and the bioavailability-based eco-risks indicated that high eco-risks only existed in overfertilized and extremely high-Se soils, such as in Enshi, Ziyang and some coalfield areas. This work provides evidence for the development of sustainable Se-rich farming with proper utilization of soil Se resources, simultaneously protecting the soil eco-environment.

Selective Impact of Selenium Compounds on Two Cytokine Storm Players

COVID-19 patients suffer from the detrimental effects of cytokine storm and not much success has been achieved to overcome this issue. We sought to test the ability of selenium to reduce the impact of two important cytokine storm players: IL-6 and TNF-α. The effects of four selenium compounds on the secretion of these cytokines from THP-1 macrophages were evaluated in vitro following an LPS challenge. Also, the potential impact of methylseleninic acid (MSeA) on Nrf2 and IκBα was determined after a short treatment of THP-1 macrophages. MSeA was found to be the most potent selenium form among the four selenium compounds tested that reduced the levels of IL-6 and TNF-α secreted by THP-1 macrophages. In addition, an increase in Nrf2 and decrease in pIκBα in human macrophages was observed following MSeA treatment. Our data indicate that COVID-19 patients might benefit from the addition of MSeA to the standard therapy due to its ability to suppress the key players in the cytokine storm.

Quantitative prediction of potential areas likely to yield Se-rich and Cd-low rice using fuzzy weights-of-evidence method

The research of high-quality agricultural products rich in selenium and low in cadmium (Se-rich and Cd-low, respectively) is related directly to the value of agricultural products and people's food safety. Now it is still challenging to carry out development planning for Se-rich rice. By fuzzy weights-of-evidence method, the geochemical soil survey data of Se and Cd from 27,833 surface soil samples and 804 rice samples was used to predict the probability of areas, in Hubei Province, China, that will likely yield (a) Se-rich and Cd-low rice, (b) Se-rich and Cd-normal rice and (c) Se-rich and Cd-high rice. The areas predicted to likely yield Se-rich and Cd-high rice, Se-rich and Cd-normal rice, and high quality (i.e., Se-rich and Cd-low) rice cover 6542.3 km2 (5.9 %), 35,845.9 km2 (32.6 %), 12,379.7 km2 (11.3 %), respectively, of the surveyed region. According to the predictive distribution probability mapping of Se and Cd, this paper gives preliminary suggestions on the use of endogenous and exogenous Se, and Cd-reduction measures in planting Se-rich rice in different regions of Hubei Province. This study provides a new perspective for rational rice planting of Se-rich agricultural products, and it lays a foundation for the effective implementation of a geochemical soil investigation engineering project, which is of great significance for improving the economic value of Se-rich agricultural products and sustainable utilization of Se land resources.

Selenium in Cancer Rehabilitation-A Retrospective Study from a Specialized Clinic

BACKGROUND

Micronutrient deficiencies are common at the time of cancer diagnosis and are associated with worse prognosis. Little is known about them in cancer rehabilitation.

METHODS

Data from routine health-related quality of life (HRQOL) were analyzed at an inpatient cancer rehabilitation center. Rehabilitation patients completed the EORTC QLQ-C30 questionnaire before and after multidisciplinary rehabilitation treatment and three months after discharge. Selenium and zinc status were measured in whole blood at these three time points. In case of selenium deficiency, up to 600 µg selenium per day as sodium selenite was supplemented for three weeks during and for three months after rehabilitation.

RESULTS

A total of 271 patients (breast, colon, and pancreatic cancer) were included in the analysis. There was clinically meaningful improvement in many domains of the EORTC QLQ-C30 during rehabilitation. However, the effect often waned in the three months after. Prevalence for selenium deficiency varied between 34 to 90% depending on cancer type (breast < colon < pancreas). In contrast, zinc deficiency was rare. Daily selenium supplementation of 600 µg was more efficient to correct selenium deficiency compared to 300 µg selenium per day. Rehabilitation and increasing selenium status after rehabilitation were associated with improved global quality of life, physical and emotional functioning, and fatigue. In cancer patients with decreasing selenium status, values of global quality of life, physical and emotional functioning, and fatigue were back to the values at the beginning of rehabilitation.

CONCLUSIONS

Selenium deficiency is common in cancer patients admitted to a cancer rehabilitation clinic. Selenium supplementation during rehabilitation effectively corrected selenium deficiency in most cases. The positive effects of rehabilitation persisted longer when selenium status did not decrease after rehabilitation.

Association of urinary exposure to multiple metal(loid)s with kidney function from a national cross-sectional study

BACKGROUND

Arsenic (As), cadmium (Cd) and copper (Cu) are hazardous for kidney function, while the effects of selenium (Se) and zinc (Zn) were unexplored for the narrow safe range of intake. Interactions exists between these multiple metal/metalloid exposures, but few studies have investigated the effects.

METHODS

A cross-sectional survey was performed among 2210 adults across twelve provinces in China between 2020 and 2021. Urinary As, Cd, Cu, Se and Zn were measured using inductively coupled plasma-mass spectrometry (ICP-MS). Serum creatinine (Scr) and N-acetyl-beta-D glucosaminidases (urine NAG) were quantified in serum and urine, respectively. Kidney function was evaluated by the estimated glomerular filtration rate (eGFR). We employed logistic regression and Bayesian kernel machine regression (BKMR) models to explore the individual and joint effects of urinary metals/metalloids on the risk of impaired renal function (IRF) or chronic kidney disease (CKD), respectively.

RESULTS

Association was found between As (OR = 1.24, 95 % CI: 1.03, 1.48), Cd (OR = 1.65, 95 % CI: 1.35, 2.02), Cu (OR = 1.90, 95 % CI: 1.59, 2.29), Se (OR = 1.51, 95 % CI: 1.24, 1.85) and Zn (OR = 1.33, 95 % CI: 1.09, 1.64) and the risk of CKD. Moreover, we observed association between As (OR = 1.18, 95 % CI: 1.07, 1.29), Cu (OR = 1.14, 95 % CI: 1.04, 1.25), Se (OR = 1.15, 95 % CI: 1.06, 1.26) and Zn (OR = 1.12, 95 % CI: 1.02, 1.22) and the risk of IRF. Additionally, it was found that Se exposure may strength the association of urinary As, Cd and Cu with IRF. Furthermore, it is worth noting that Se and Cu contributed greatest to the inverse association in IRF and CKD, respectively.

CONCLUSION

Our findings suggested that metal/metalloid mixtures were associated with kidney dysfunction, Se and Cu were inverse factors. Additionally, interactions between them may affect the association. Further studies are needed to assess the potential risks for metal/metalloid exposures.

The importance of selenium in food enrichment processes. A comprehensive review

Selenium is an essential element that determines the proper life functions of human and animal organisms. The content of selenium in food varies depending on the region and soil conditions. Therefore, the main source is a properly selected diet. However, in many countries, there are shortages of this element in the soil and local food. Too low an amount of this element in food can lead to many adverse changes in the body. The consequence of this may also be the occurrence of numerous potentially life-threatening diseases. Therefore, it is very important to properly introduce methods that condition the supplementation of the appropriate chemical form of this element, especially in areas with deficient selenium content. This review aims to summarize the published literature on the characterization of different types of selenium-enriched foods. At the same time, legal regulations and prospects for the future related to the production of food enriched with this element are presented. It should be noted that there are limitations and concerns with the production of such food due to the narrow safety range between the necessary and the toxic dose of this element. Therefore, selenium has been treated with special care for a very long time. For this reason, the presented mechanisms of production processes related to increasing the scale of selenium supplementation should be constantly monitored. Appropriate monitoring and development of the technological process for the production of selenium-enriched food is very important. Such food should ensure consumer safety and repeatability of the obtained product. Understanding the mechanisms and possibilities of selenium accumulation by plants and animals is one of the most important directions in the development of modern bromatology and the science of supplementation. This is particularly important in the case of rational nutrition and supplementing the human diet with an essential element such as selenium. Food technology is facing these challenges today.

The emerging frontier of plant immunity's core hubs

The ever-growing world population, increasingly frequent extreme weather events and conditions, emergence of novel devastating crop pathogens and the social strive for quality food products represent a huge challenge for current and future agricultural production systems. To address these challenges and find realistic solutions, it is becoming more important by the day to understand the complex interactions between plants and the environment, mainly the associated organisms, but in particular pathogens. In the past several years, research in the fields of plant pathology and plant-microbe interactions has enabled tremendous progress in understanding how certain receptor-based plant innate immune systems function to successfully prevent infections and diseases. In this review, we highlight and discuss some of these new ground-breaking discoveries and point out strategies of how pathogens counteract the function of important core convergence hubs of the plant immune system. For practical reasons, we specifically place emphasis on potential applications that can be detracted by such discoveries and what challenges the future of agriculture has to face, but also how these challenges could be tackled.

Foraging for selenium: a comparison between hyperaccumulator and non-accumulator plant species

Selenium (Se) hyperaccumulators are a unique group of plants that can accumulate this element in their aerial parts at concentrations exceeding 100 mg kgDW-1. These plants actively search for Se in the soil, a phenomenon known as root foraging, reported to date only by few studies. In this study, the effect of localized Se enrichment, in the form of selenite and selenate, was investigated on the root architecture of two Se-hyperaccumulators (Stanleya pinnata and Astragalus bisulcatus) and two non-accumulators (Brassica juncea and Medicago sativa). Rhizoboxes were divided into two halves: one half was filled with control soil while the other with selenate or selenite (30 mg kgDW-1) spiked soil. Seedling were transferred into the interface of the two soils and allowed to grow for three weeks under controlled light and temperature conditions. Staneya pinnata exhibited equal root density in both halves of the rhizobox when grown in control/control and selenite/control soil treatments. However, in the presence of selenate, S. pinnata developed 76% of the roots towards the selenate-enriched half, indicating an active root foraging. In contrast, A. bisulcatus and the non-accumulators B. juncea and M. sativa did not show any preferential distribution of roots. This study revealed that only S. pinnata showed the ability to detect and forage for Se when provided as selenate. Non-accumulators did not show any morphological or Se-accumulation difference associated with the presence of Se in soil in either form.

The accessibility, necessity, and significance of certified reference materials for total selenium content and its species to improve food laboratories' performance

Micronutrients are one of the most important groups of nutrients that our body needs daily in trace amounts to tackle deficiencies. Selenium (Se) is a mineral that occurs naturally in foods and is an essential component of selenoproteins that support the healthy functioning of the human body. Therefore, monitoring dietary Se concentrations must be a higher priority to meet daily intakes. Fulfillment can be addressed through applying various analytical techniques, and the certified reference materials (CRMs) tool plays a crucial role in quality assurance/quality control (QA/QC). The availability of certified CRMs for total Se content with addition to their species is presented. The review emphasizes the necessity of incorporating more food matrix CRMs certifying Se species, apart from total Se content, to meet method validation requirements for food analysis laboratories. This would help CRM producers bridge the gap between available food matrix materials that are not certified for Se species.

Time-Resolved Examination of Fungal Selenium Redox Transformations

Selenium (Se) is both a micronutrient required for most life and an element of environmental concern due to its toxicity at high concentrations, and both bioavailability and toxicity are largely influenced by the Se oxidation state. Environmentally relevant fungi have been shown to aerobically reduce Se(IV) and Se(VI), the generally more toxic and bioavailable Se forms. The goal of this study was to shed light on fungal Se(IV) reduction pathways and biotransformation products over time and fungal growth stages. Two Ascomycete fungi were grown with moderate (0.1 mM) and high (0.5 mM) Se(IV) concentrations in batch culture over 1 month. Fungal growth was measured throughout the experiments, and aqueous and biomass-associated Se was quantified and speciated using analytical geochemistry, transmission electron microscopy (TEM), and synchrotron-based X-ray absorption spectroscopy (XAS) approaches. The results show that Se transformation products were largely Se(0) nanoparticles, with a smaller proportion of volatile, methylated Se compounds and Se-containing amino acids. Interestingly, the relative proportions of these products were consistent throughout all fungal growth stages, and the products appeared stable over time even as growth and Se(IV) concentration declined. This time-series experiment showing different biotransformation products throughout the different growth phases suggests that multiple mechanisms are responsible for Se detoxification, but some of these mechanisms might be independent of Se presence and serve other cellular functions. Knowing and predicting fungal Se transformation products has important implications for environmental and biological health as well as for biotechnology applications such as bioremediation, nanobiosensors, and chemotherapeutic agents.

Selenium deficiency causes hypertension by increasing renal AT1 receptor expression via GPx1/H2O2/NF-κB pathway

Epidemiological studies show an association between low body selenium and the risk of hypertension. However, whether selenium deficiency causes hypertension remains unknown. Here, we report that Sprague-Dawley rats fed a selenium-deficient diet for 16 weeks developed hypertension, accompanied with decreased sodium excretion. The hypertension of selenium-deficient rats was associated with increased renal angiotensin II type 1 receptor (AT1R) expression and function that was reflected by the increase in sodium excretion after the intrarenal infusion of the AT1R antagonist candesartan. Selenium-deficient rats had increased systemic and renal oxidative stress; treatment with the antioxidant tempol for 4 weeks decreased the elevated blood pressure, increased sodium excretion, and normalized renal AT1R expression. Among the altered selenoproteins in selenium-deficient rats, the decrease in renal glutathione peroxidase 1 (GPx1) expression was most prominent. GPx1, via regulation of NF-κB p65 expression and activity, was involved in the regulation of renal AT1R expression because treatment with dithiocarbamate (PDTC), an NF-κB inhibitor, reversed the up-regulation of AT1R expression in selenium-deficient renal proximal tubule (RPT) cells. The up-regulation of AT1R expression with GPx1 silencing was restored by PDTC. Moreover, treatment with ebselen, a GPX1 mimic, reduced the increased renal AT1R expression, Na+-K+-ATPase activity, hydrogen peroxide (H2O2) generation, and the nuclear translocation of NF-κB p65 protein in selenium-deficient RPT cells. Our results demonstrated that long-term selenium deficiency causes hypertension, which is due, at least in part, to decreased urine sodium excretion. Selenium deficiency increases H2O2 production by reducing GPx1 expression, which enhances NF-κB activity, increases renal AT1R expression, causes sodium retention and consequently increases blood pressure.

Loss of Selenium from Mollisol Paddy Wetlands of Cold Regions: Insights from Flow-through Reactor Experiments and Process-Based Modeling

Mollisols are critical agricultural resources for securing global food supply. Due to its health importance, selenium (Se) fate in the Mollisols attracts growing concerns. Land use change from conventional drylands to paddy wetlands impacts Se bioavailability in the vulnerable Mollisol agroecosystems. The underlying processes and mechanisms however remain elusive. Here, results of flow-through reactor experiments with paddy Mollisols from northern cold-region sites indicate that continuous flooding with surface water for 48 d induced redox zonation that facilitated the loss of Mollisol Se by up to 51%. Further process-based biogeochemical modeling suggests largest degradation rates of dissolved organic matter (DOM) in 30 cm deep Mollisols that contained the highest-level labile DOM and organic-bound Se. Electron shunting from degradation of Se-bearing DOM coupled to reductive dissolution of Se-adsorbed Fe oxides accounts mainly for Se(IV) release into the pore water. Consequent changes in DOM molecular composition make the reservoir of organic-bound Se vulnerable to flooding-induced redox zonation and likely enhance Se loss through destruction of thiolated Se and emission of gaseous Se from the Mollisol layer. This study highlights a neglected scenario where the speciation-driven loss of bioavailable Se from the paddy wetlands can be a significant consequence in the cold-region Mollisol agroecosystems.

Immunophenotyping of Monocyte Migration Markers and Therapeutic Effects of Selenium on IL-6 and IL-1β Cytokine Axes of Blood Mononuclear Cells in Preoperative and Postoperative Coronary Artery Disease Patients

Multivessel coronary artery disease (CAD) is characterized by underlying chronic vascular inflammation and occlusion in the coronary arteries, where these patients undergo coronary artery bypass grafting (CABG). Since post-cardiotomy inflammation is a well known phenomenon after CABG, attenuation of this inflammation is required to reduce perioperative morbidity and mortality. In this study, we aimed to phenotype circulating frequencies and intensities of monocyte subsets and monocyte migration markers, respectively, and to investigate the plasma level of inflammatory cytokines and chemokines between preoperative and postoperative CAD patients and later, to intervene the inflammation with sodium selenite. We found a higher amplitude of inflammation, postoperatively, in terms of CCR1high monocytes and significantly increased pro-inflammatory cytokines, IL-6, IL-8, and IL-1RA. Further, in vitro intervention with selenium displayed mitigating effects on the IL-6/STAT-3 axis of mononuclear cells derived from postoperative CAD patients. In addition, in vitro selenium intervention significantly reduced IL-1β production as well as decreased cleaved caspase-1 (p20) activity by preoperative (when stimulated) as well as postoperative CAD mononuclear cells. Though TNF-α exhibited a positive correlation with blood troponin levels in postoperative CAD patients, there was no obvious effect of selenium on the TNF-α/NF-κB axis. In conclusion, anti-inflammatory selenium might be utilized to impede systemic inflammatory cytokine axes to circumvent aggravating atherosclerosis and further damage to the autologous bypass grafts during the post-surgical period.

Foliar Selenate and Zinc Oxide Separately Applied to Two Pea Varieties: Effects on Growth Parameters and Accumulation of Minerals and Macronutrients in Seeds under Field Conditions

Though selenium (Se) and zinc (Zn) constitute essential nutrients for human health, their deficiencies affect up to 15% and 17% of the global population, respectively. Agronomic biofortification of staple crops with Se/Zn may alleviate these challenges. Pea (Pisum sativum L.) is a nutritious legume crop that has great potential for Se/Zn biofortification. Herein, two varieties of pea (Ambassador, Premium) were biofortified via foliar application of sodium selenate (0/50/100 g of Se/ha) or zinc oxide (0/375/750 g of Zn/ha) during the flowering stage under field conditions. While no significant differences were found in Se accumulation between seed varieties upon Se treatments, selenate enhanced the accumulation of Se in the two seed varieties in a dose dependent manner. Selenium concentration was most elevated in seeds of Ambassador exposed to 100 g of Se/ha (3.93 mg/kg DW compared to the control (0.08 mg/kg DW), p < 0.001). 375 g of Zn/ha (35.7 mg/kg DW) and 750 g of Zn/ha (35.5 mg/kg DW) significantly and similarly enhanced Zn concentrations compared to the control (31.3 mg/kg DW) in Premium seeds, p < 0.001. Zinc oxide also improved accumulations of Fe, Cu, Mn, and Mg in Premium seeds. Se/Zn treatments did not significantly affect growth parameters and accumulations of soluble solids and protein in seeds. Positive and significant (p < 0.01) correlations were observed between Zn and Fe, Cu, Mn and Mg levels in Premium seeds, among others. Consuming 33 g/day of pea biofortified with Se at 50 g/ha and 266 g/day of pea biofortified with 375 g of Zn/ha could provide 100% of the RDA (55 μg) for Se and RDA (9.5 mg) for Zn in adults, respectively. These results are relevant for enhancing Se/Zn status in peas by foliar biofortification.

Selenium Speciation in Se-Enriched Soybean Grains from Biofortified Plants Grown under Different Methods of Selenium Application

Since soybean is widely cultivated around the world and has a high protein content, it is a great nutritional vehicle for increasing the dietary uptake of selenium (Se). Several studies have evaluated biofortification with Se through fertilizer application in several crops. However, it is not clear how each method and source affect the total Se content or Se species in soybean grains. This work aimed to assess the total Se content and Se speciation in Se-enriched soybean grains produced under different Se application methods in the field. The treatments consisted of Se application (soil or foliar), using organic or inorganic Se sources at 10 g ha−1 or 80 g ha−1, in two genotypes. The results showed that all treatments with inorganic Se (soil and foliar) increased the Se content in grains compared with the control. More than 80% of the total Se in grains was present as selenomethionine (SeMet), and the speciation was affected by the Se source and the method of application. The treatments using inorganic Se, applied via soil or foliar, produced the highest content of Se as SeMet in soybean grains. Finally, we propose that the preservation of the Se species in products derived from soybean grains be evaluated as the following step.
