Abstract
BACKGROUND The aims of this cross-sectional study were to (a) assess actigraphy-based sleep parameters (total sample and gender differences), (b) assess differences in morphological parameters and physical function between short- versus normal-sleepers and poor- versus good-sleepers, and (c) assess the possible correlations between sleep variables and morphological and physical function parameters in older subjects. METHODS This study enrolled 42 healthy older participants (60-80 years). Participants completed the following clinical evaluations: (1) whole-body dual-energy X-ray absorptiometry to assess the appendicular skeletal muscle mass index; (2) magnetic resonance imaging acquisition to determine the cross-sectional muscle area of thigh muscles and intermuscular adipose tissue; (3) risk of fall assessment through the mini-Balance Evaluation Systems Test; (4) strength assessment: (a) chair stand test and (b) handgrip strength test; (5) sleep monitoring by actigraphy to assess total sleep time, sleep efficiency, wake after sleep onset, sleep latency, fragmentation index, mobile time, and subjective sleep quality. RESULTS 31.0% of subjects were short-sleepers (total sleep time < 6 hr), 19.1% were poor-sleepers (sleep efficiency < 85%), and gender differences were detected in mobile time (males: 15.8 ± 6.0 and females: 13.4 ± 6.8; p < .001) and fragmentation index (males: 35.3 ± 14.3 and females: 29.6 ± 14.6; p < .001); no significant differences were observed between groups (short- vs. normal-sleepers and poor- vs. good-sleepers) in morphological and physical function variables; correlation analysis showed that sleep latency negatively correlated with Mini-Balance Evaluation Systems Test (r = -.352; p = .022) and a positive correlation was detected between cross-sectional muscle area and mobile time (r = .349, p = .023). CONCLUSION No differences were observed in morphological and function parameters between good- versus poor-sleepers, those subjects with worse sleep onset latency (i.e., longer time to fall asleep) registered higher for risk of fall. The potential role of sleep in the physiological mechanisms of muscular aging must be explored through cross-sectional cohort studies with a larger population.

Abstract
CONTEXT Understanding Paralympic athletes' perspectives on the importance of sleep is the first step toward developing effective sleep hygiene (SH) strategies. We aim to describe and compare the knowledge about SH and sleep behaviors practiced by medalists and nonmedalists Paralympic athletes at the Tokyo 2020 Paralympic Games and between sexes (female vs male), identify whether the coaching staff encourages SH, and the perspective of these athletes on the importance of SH. METHODS 98 Paralympic athletes responded to the Sleep Beliefs Scale and the Athlete Sleep Behavior Questionnaire-BR. RESULTS Medalists (68%) and nonmedalists (78%) Paralympic athletes had low knowledge about SH (60% vs 55%; P = .20), with no difference between groups. The Athlete Sleep Behavior Questionnaire-BR score (48.7 [5.9]) for all Paralympic athletes (n = 98) indicated high practice of maladaptive sleep behaviors. Male athletes had significantly worse sleep behaviors than female athletes (49.1 [6.0] vs 39.5 [7.2]; P < .01) and less knowledge about behaviors that can affect sleep (64% vs 72%; P < .05), 26% of Paralympic athletes considered SH practices necessary, and the frequency of coaching staff encouraging SH was higher among medalists Paralympic athletes compared to nonmedalists athletes (29% vs 13%, P = .04). CONCLUSIONS Most Paralympic athletes have inadequate sleep behaviors and knowledge about SH. There was no difference between knowledge about SH and sleep behaviors between medalists and nonmedalists Paralympic athletes, although medalists athletes were more encouraged to practice SH. Male Paralympic athletes had worse sleep behaviors and worse knowledge about SH than female athletes.

Abstract
We aimed to compare sleep problems in autistic and non-autistic adults with co-occurring depression and anxiety. The primary research question was whether autism status influences sleep quality, after accounting for the effects of depression and anxiety. We hypothesized that autistic adults would report higher levels of depression, anxiety, and sleep problems compared to non-autistic adults, after controlling for these covariates. We recruited 208 adults (109 non-autistic, 99 autistic) through a crowdsourcing platform, Prolific. Participants completed the Pittsburgh Sleep Quality Index, the Center for Epidemiologic Studies Depression Scale, and the Generalized Anxiety Disorder 7-item scale. Statistical analyses included Mann-Whitney U tests to compare group scores and a generalized linear model to assess the effect of autism status on sleep problems while controlling for depressive and anxiety symptoms. Autistic adults reported significantly higher levels of depressive and anxiety symptoms compared to non-autistic adults. However, after controlling for depression and anxiety, autism status alone did not have a statistically significant effect on overall sleep quality. The findings suggest that while autistic adults experience more severe sleep problems, these issues are closely related to higher levels of depression and anxiety rather than autism status itself. This study contributes to the understanding of sleep difficulties in autistic individuals, highlighting the importance of addressing co-occurring mental health conditions. Further research should explore the specific factors that exacerbate sleep problems in this population.

Abstract
PURPOSE Advances in cancer treatment have increased childhood cancer patient's survival rates. However, many childhood cancer survivors (CCS) face long-term effects such as fatigue. This study assessed fatigue in CCS and healthy controls (HCs), its contributors, and associated outcomes. METHODS This cross-sectional study included 90 CCS and 55 age and sex-matched HCs. Fatigue was measured using the Pediatric Quality of Life Multidimensional Fatigue Scale, and modifiable contributors included sleep quality (Pittsburgh Sleep Quality Index [PSQI]) and physical fitness (VO2 peak during a treadmill test). Quality of life (QoL) and emotional and cognitive functioning were evaluated using the Pediatric Quality of Life Inventory, Beck Depression Inventory II, Cognitive Failure Questionnaire, and the Impact of Event Scale-Revised. Stepwise linear regressions identified predictors of general, sleep/rest, cognitive, and total fatigue. RESULTS General, cognitive, and total fatigue were significantly higher in CCS compared to HCs (44.7% vs. 23%, p < .001; cognitive: 64.7% vs. 29.3%, p < .001; total fatigue: 56.5% vs. 25%, p < .001). Sex, PSQI, PSQI × sex, and PSQI × VO₂ were significant predictors for general fatigue, PSQI and PSQI × VO₂ for cognitive fatigue, and PSQI for sleep/rest and total fatigue. Cognitive and total fatigue correlated most strongly with cognitive and work-related functioning, whereas general and sleep/rest fatigue were more related to psychosocial functioning. CONCLUSION Fatigue is highly prevalent among CCS, with distinct factors influencing general, sleep/rest, cognitive, and total fatigue. Female survivors, those with poorer sleep quality and lower physical fitness, are at risk. IMPLICATIONS FOR CANCER SURVIVORS This study underscores the need for tailored interventions for each type of fatigue. Improving sleep quality, physical fitness, and psychological well-being may contribute to reducing fatigue and enhancing overall quality of life in CCS.

Abstract
Background The 2D:4D digit ratio (DR), representing the relative length of the index finger to the ring finger, is an anthropometric marker that shows sexual dimorphism, with males typically having a lower ratio than females. This parameter is linked to prenatal androgen exposure (PAE), which influences sexual differentiation of the brain and behavior. This study aimed to investigate the correlation between PAE and sleep among young adults. Methods Anthropometric measurements were used to assess PAE, while sleep was evaluated using the Pittsburgh Sleep Quality Index (PSQI), Morningness-Eveningness Questionnaire (MEQ), actigraphy, and polysomnography (PSG). Data was collected from 720 participants via surveys, with 290 completing all questionnaires. Of these, 138 underwent anthropometric measurements, and 38 were further recruited for actigraphy, PSG. Results Men exhibited a lower 2D:4D ratio than women, indicating higher PAE. The average PSQI score was 6.94 ± 2.98, and the MEQ score was 35.43 ± 19.59, with no significant gender differences in sleep quality or chronotype. Low PAE was associated with better sleep efficiency and a morning chronotype, but worse sleep quality in males. Actigraphy results showed no significant differences based on PAE. PSG data revealed that males with longer 2nd fingers and higher 2D:4D ratios were more likely to suffer from mild sleep apnea, a pattern not observed in women. PAE did not significantly impact other sleep architecture parameters. Conclusions PAE, indicated by the 2D:4D ratio, is linked to sleep efficiency and chronotype, with significant gender differences. Men with lower PAE exhibited poorer sleep quality, and those with certain finger length patterns were more prone to mild sleep apnea. These findings underscore the potential long-term impacts of PAE on sleep health and emphasize the need for further research into gender-specific sleep regulation mechanisms.

Abstract
OBJECTIVE Prenatal sleep problems have been previously linked to poor birth outcomes. However, much less is known about the associations between poor prenatal maternal sleep and offspring outcomes after birth. The purpose of this systematic review was to synthesize the findings linking prenatal maternal sleep health and offspring health and development during infancy and childhood. METHODS A total of 4650 nonduplicate articles were identified via PsycInfo and PubMed databases. After screening and full-text review, 34 articles met the inclusion criteria and were extracted for information. RESULTS The bulk of studies in this review (n = 19; 76.5%) were published between 2019 and 2024. Measures of prenatal sleep included sleep timing, quality, sleep disorders and/or symptoms of disorders, and daytime sleepiness. Offspring outcomes were categorized as follows: a) sleep health (e.g., nighttime sleep duration, night wakings), b) physical health (e.g., body mass index, hospitalizations), c) child developmental outcomes (e.g., global development, negative affect, executive functioning), and d) brain structure and function (e.g., brain volume, event-related potentials). Evidence consistently links poor prenatal sleep health to poorer offspring sleep, higher body mass index, higher prevalence of physical health conditions, poorer global development, and more behavioral problems. Emerging evidence also links prenatal sleep to differences in offspring brain structure and function. CONCLUSIONS Poor prenatal maternal sleep health may be an environmental signal that informs offspring health. Future studies are needed to fully understand the pervasive, intergenerational, and long-lasting effects of sleep across pregnancy.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Understanding the association between the menopausal transition and declining sleep quality can guide optimal timing for preventive interventions in transitioning women. However, studies lack representation of Asian women and sufficient data on the progression of menopausal stages and sleep quality changes over time in this population. METHODS This study included 3305 women in the pre-menopause stage at baseline. The sleep quality and its components were assessed using the Pittsburgh Sleep Quality Index (PSQI). Menopausal stages were classified as pre-menopause, early transition, late transition, and post-menopause according to the Stages of Reproductive Aging Workshop+10 (STRAW+10) criteria. We estimated the longitudinal association between menopausal stage changes over time and the PSQI score, and examined the effect of being overweight. RESULTS The trends in the PSQI scores and its components according to the menopausal stage changes over time showed that with the exception of sleep duration and habitual sleep efficiency, an overall decline was noted in sleep health during late transition and post-menopause compared to pre-menopause. These associations were independent of time-variant annual chronological aging, which was not significantly associated with sleep deterioration. Additionally, although the associations between menopausal stages and sleep quality did not significantly differ by adiposity level, the overweight group exhibited worse PSQI scores and components than did the non-overweight group. LIMITATION Sleep quality and menopausal stage were assessed using self-reported questionnaires without objective measures. CONCLUSION Our study underscores the importance of screening for sleep quality deterioration and implementing appropriate measures for women experiencing menopausal transition.

Abstract
BACKGROUND/OBJECTIVES Recent studies indicate that sleep and sleep disorders differ between men and women, but corresponding data in people with chronic lung diseases are lacking. This study aims to answer the question of what the sex-specific differences in sleep profiles and responses to elexacaftor/tezacaftor/ivacaftor (ETI) therapy in people with cystic fibrosis (pwCF) are. METHODS Adult pwCF and a matched control group (adults with suspected sleep-disordered breathing undergoing in-laboratory polysomnography (PSG)) were included. PSG data at baseline and after 6 months' ETI therapy were compared between men (mwCF) and women (wwCF) with cystic fibrosis. PSG data at baseline and 6-month follow-up for mwCF/wwCF were compared with baseline PSG data for men/women in the control group. Daytime sleepiness was evaluated using the Epworth Sleepiness Scale (ESS). Correlations between change in percentage predicted forced expiratory volume in 1 s from baseline to 6 months were correlated with corresponding changes in key sleep parameters. Changes in transferrin during ETI therapy were also documented. RESULTS Twenty-eight pwCF (12 wwCF, 16 mwCF) and 28 matched controls were included. Both mwCF (4 ± 5 vs. 9 ± 20 events/h, p = 0.028) and wwCF (3 ± 3 vs. 8 ± 9 events/h, p = 0.004) had fewer respiratory events during sleep versus male and female controls, but worse sleep efficiency (75 ± 11% vs. 84 ± 11%; p = 0.004 and 76 ± 10% vs. 83 ± 11%; p = 0.011. The baseline ESS score was significantly higher in wwCF versus female controls (8 ± 4 vs. 14 ± 8; p = 0.040). Although some sleep parameters normalized during ETI therapy in pwCF, sleep quality remained poor. The transferrin levels at baseline (2.7 ± 0.4 vs. 2.2 ± 0.5; p = 0.049) and 6 months (3.8 ± 0.4 vs. 2.6 ± 0.5; p < 0.001) were significantly higher in the wwCF versus the mwCF, and the change from baseline during ETI therapy was significantly greater in women versus men (1.1 ± 0.6 vs. 0.4 ± 0.4; p < 0.001). CONCLUSIONS These data suggest that wwCF and mwCF should be managed differently with respect to their sleep.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Sleep is a crucial determinant of physical and mental health outcomes, and insufficient sleep is highly prevalent among United States adults. Although some risk factors of poor sleep have been extensively studied, including substance use, age, health behaviors, and others, the associations between socioeconomic status (SES) and sleep remain inconclusive. There is limited evidence on SES and sleep duration among the US adult population. This study analyzed the relationships between three SES indicators (poverty, education, and food security), and sleep duration. METHODS We used responses from the 2017-March 2020 National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey (NHANES). Respondents younger than 25 years old were excluded. Sleep duration was classified using self-reported sleep time and stratified by work vs. non-workdays. SES was operationalized using three indicators: poverty-income ratio, educational attainment, and food security status. We imputed missing data for socioeconomic status and outcome variables using multiple imputation. Weighted Poisson regression models with robust standard errors were used to calculate the crude and adjusted prevalence ratios for insufficient sleep duration (< 7 h of self-reported sleep) on workdays and non-workdays separately by each of the three SES indicators. RESULTS We included a total of 8,457 individuals. In the adjusted model, participants with lower income, educational status, and food security had significantly higher prevalence of insufficient sleep duration on both workdays and non-workdays. For example, low-income individuals (poverty-income ratio < 1) had 1.22 (95% CI 1.04-1.44) and 2.08 (95% CI 1.61-2.67) higher prevalence of insufficient sleep as compared to high income individuals on workday and non-workdays, respectively. In general, we found larger differences by level of SES indicator for the non-workday than for the workday outcome. There were no major differences in gender-stratified analysis. We also found that lower SES was associated with higher prevalence of excessive sleep (≥ 9 h). CONCLUSION Socioeconomic status indicators are significantly associated with sleep duration in the US adult population. Lower SES correlates with increased prevalence of insufficient sleep duration, which has implications for the overall wellbeing of US adults with lower SES. Targeted interventions and further research are needed to reduce this disparity.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Sleep, cognition, and mortality may be interdependent. OBJECTIVE We explored paths between sleep, cognition and mortality and potential interactions. METHODS The study examines the relationship among sleep, global mental status, and mortality risk using data from 1364 participants from the Healthy Aging in Neighborhood of Diversity across the Life Span (HANDLS) study. We used Cox proportional hazards models and four-way decomposition models to analyze sleep patterns and global mental status. RESULTS After a median time at risk of 8.2 years, 172 deaths occurred, with rate of 16 per 1000 person-years. A 1-unit increase in the Pittsburgh Sleep Quality Index (PSQI) global score was linked to a 7% increase in mortality risk in the reduced model, but this effect was attenuated in the full model. In both reduced and fully adjusted models, the PSQI global score and sleep quality domains interacted with global mental status, with poor sleep generally associated with mortality risk in the group with better global mental status at first-visit. In four-way decomposition models, total effects (TE) of PSQI scores on mortality risk were positive and statistically significant, while being mostly controlled direct effects. However, among women, the inverse TE of global mental status on mortality risk was partially mediated by PSQI sleep latency and the PSQI global. CONCLUSIONS Poor global mental status is associated with greater mortality risk at better sleep quality levels and vice versa. Further longitudinal studies with multiple sleep and cognitive performance repeats are needed to corroborate these findings.

Abstract
Purpose To identify sleep dimensions (characteristics) that co-occur in premenopausal women. The second aim was to examine associations between multiple dimensions of sleep and a set of demographic, lifestyle, and health correlates. The overarching goal was to uncover patterns of poor-sleep correlates that might inform interventions to improve sleep health of women in this age group. Methods The BioCycle Study included 259 healthy women aged 18-44y recruited between 2005 and 2007 from Western New York. Participants reported sleep data through daily diaries and questionnaires that were used to create five sleep health dimensions (duration, variability, timing, latency, and continuity). We used multivariate analysis - canonical correlation methods - to identify links among dimensions of sleep health and patterns of demographic, psychological, and occupational correlates. Results Two distinct combinations of sleep dimensions were identified. The first - primarily determined by low variability in nightly sleep duration, low variability in bedtime (timing), greater nocturnal awakening, and less sleep onset latency - was distinguished from the second - primarily determined by sleep duration.The first combination of sleep dimensions was associated with older age and higher parity, fewer depressive symptoms, and higher stress level. The second combination of sleep dimensions was associated with perception of longer sleep duration as optimal, lower parity, not engaging in shift work, older age, lower stress level, higher prevalence of depressive symptoms, and White race. Conclusion Among premenopausal women, we demonstrated distinct patterns of sleep dimensions that co-occur and vary by demographic, health, and lifestyle correlates. These findings shed light on the correlates of sleep health vulnerabilities among young women.

Abstract
Psychological flexibility has recently attracted the attention of researchers in the field of sleep disorders; therefore, in the study, psychological flexibility was evaluated as a predictor or factor related to the presence/severity of insomnia. We included 2218 individuals selected from the randomized-control trial for behavioural therapy for insomnia and cross-sectional studies, including 1797 individuals with insomnia and 421 controls without insomnia. All participants completed the DSM-5-based insomnia diagnosis interview, Insomnia Severity Index, Hospital Anxiety and Depression Scale, and Acceptance Action Questionnaire-II. Linear regression and multinomial logistic regression models were used. Sex, education, occupation, marital status, anxiety, depression and psychological inflexibility were possible predictors or factors associated with the severity of insomnia. Multivariate linear regression analysis demonstrated that sex (𝛽 = 0.88; t = 2.80; p = 0.005), depression (𝛽 = 0.41; t = 10.7; p < 0.001), anxiety (𝛽 = 0.58; t = 14.1; p < 0.001) and psychological inflexibility (𝛽 = 0.09; t = 5.07; p < 0.001) were predictors of insomnia. The results of the multinomial logistic regression demonstrate that, in comparison to the absence of insomnia, insomnia at all levels (mild, moderate and severe) was associated with sex, anxiety and depression. Psychological inflexibility was only associated with severe insomnia (odds ratio = 1.04). These findings are important from a public health perspective because behavioural strategies designed to treat insomnia with a focus on psychological flexibility are low-cost and may help improve sleep quality in adults with insomnia, which also influences mental health.

Abstract
We examined the relationship between subjective and objective sleep outcomes and loneliness in older women at risk for Alzheimer's disease (AD). Our sample consisted of 39 participants (aged 65+) with mild cognitive deficits who completed the UCLA Loneliness Scale, the Pittsburgh Sleep Quality Index (PSQI), and an at home sleep test, to determine presence of obstructive sleep apnea. Based on sleep quality scores, individuals categorized as "poor sleepers" had significantly higher loneliness scores than "good sleepers." However, total loneliness scores did not significantly differ between groups with or without sleep apnea. We found that higher loneliness was significantly associated to lower habitual sleep efficiency and sleep duration and was also influenced by use of sleep medication. Our findings suggest that increased loneliness relates to worse subjective sleep quality, but not to sleep apnea. These findings suggest that combined interventions targeting loneliness and sleep quality may be important for older women.

Objective This exploratory multimodal neuroimaging study aimed to examine sex differences in cognitively unimpaired older adults on: (1) amyloid-β via 18F-AV-45 Florbetapir PET imaging, (2) neurodegeneration via T1 weighted MRI volumetrics, (3) cerebral blood flow via ASL-MRI. We identified AD risk factors including genetic (APOE genotype status) and health markers (fasting glucose, mean arterial pressure, waist-to-hip ratio, and android and gynoid body fat) associated with neuroimaging outcomes for which we observed sex differences. Methods Participants were sedentary, amyloid-β positive older adults (N = 112, ages 65-87 years) without evidence of cognitive impairment (CDR = 0). Results Multivariate analysis of covariance models adjusted for intracranial volume, age, and years of education demonstrated lower volume (F (7, 102) = 2.67, p = 0.014) and higher blood flow F (6, 102) = 4.25, p =<0.001) among females compared to males in regions of interest connected to AD pathology and the estrogen receptor network. We did not observe sex differences in amyloid-β levels. Higher than optimal waist to hip ratio was most strongly associated with lower volume, while higher android fat percentage and APOE ε4 carrier status were most strongly associated with higher blood flow among female participants. Discussion Findings suggest genetic and chronic health risk factors are associated with sex-specific AD neuroimaging biomarkers. Underlying sex-specific biological pathways may explain these findings. Our results highlight the importance of considering sex differences in neuroimaging studies and when developing effective interventions for AD prevention and risk reduction.

Abstract
OBJECTIVE Among younger adults, to determine the associations of actigraph- and self-reported sleep duration with arterial stiffness (AS) assessed in clinic and in ecologically valid contexts, and to examine sex-specific associations. METHODS Healthy adults ( n = 282, median age = 29 years, 67% women) completed a state-of-the-art assessment of AS at rest (SphygmoCor; carotid femoral pulse wave velocity [cfPWV]; central augmentation index [cAIx]) and 7 days of actigraphy-assessed sleep with concurrent, momentary cAIx assessment for 36 hours (Oscar-2). Multivariable regressions were conducted on the full sample and sex-stratified to examine cross-sectional linear and quadratic associations of average sleep duration with resting PWV and cAIx, average cAIx while awake and asleep, and nocturnal cAIx dipping, adjusted for demographic and health covariates. Exploratory analyses included self-reported sleep duration with AS, and actigraphy and self-reported sleep duration with the ambulatory arterial stiffness index (AASI; Oscar-2). RESULTS Overall and by sex, associations of average sleep duration with resting cfPWV, resting cAIx, and awake cAIx were not significant. Sleep duration showed a positive, linear association with sleep cAIx in women (95% confidence interval =1.07 to 5.86, Δ R2 = 0.021). Among women, sleep duration was also inversely associated with cAIx dipping (95% confidence interval = -4.48 to -0.95, Δ R2 = 0.020). Analyses with self-reported sleep duration and AASI as alternate predictors and outcomes were not significant. CONCLUSIONS Certain sleep duration-AS associations may be sex-specific. Assessing sleep and momentary AS in ecologically valid conditions outside the research laboratory is valuable to understand these relations. Although this investigation should be replicated, findings raise the question of whether interventions to target sleep duration also reduce AS.

Abstract
Objectives This study investigates the associations of retrospective reports of Recession hardships with 10-year changes in subjective and objective indicators of sleep, and whether these associations differ by race and gender. Methods 501 adults (14.57% Black; 54.49% female) from the Midlife in the United States (MIDUS) study reported on the subjective Pittsburgh Sleep Quality Index (PSQI) across two waves (pre-Recession, collected 2004-2009; post-Recession, collected 2017-2022), as well as Recession hardships since 2008. A sub-sample of 201 adults (25.37% Black; 58.21% female) provided objective actigraphy-measured sleep data (total sleep time, sleep onset latency, sleep efficiency) across the two waves. Results Descriptive analyses revealed Black participants had higher average Recession hardships, poorer post-Recession PSQI scores, and poorer post-Recession actigraphy sleep quantity and quality compared to white participants. Females had higher average Recession hardships compared to males; and reported poorer post-Recession PSQI, but had better objective post-Recession sleep quantity and quality compared to males. Regression models showed Recession hardships (across overall events, and sub-domains of financial and housing hardships) were associated with poorer PSQI and actigraphy-measured sleep efficiency following the Recession, adjusting for sociodemographic covariates, corresponding pre-Recession sleep variables, and pre-Recession chronic conditions. There was no evidence for significant moderation by race on sleep outcomes. However, gender moderation indicated associations between housing hardships and poorer actigraphy-measured sleep efficiency were more apparent for females than for males. Conclusions Findings indicate that Recession hardships (particularly in financial and housing domains) may be manifested in poor sleep. Racial and gender groups may have differential exposure and sleep-related reactivity to Recession hardships.

Abstract
A significant effort in biomedical sciences has been made to examine relationships between sex and the mechanisms underlying various disease states and behaviors, including sleep. Here, we investigated biological sex differences in sleep using male and female C57BL/6J mice (n = 267). Physiological parameters were recorded for 48-h using non-invasive piezoelectric cages to determine total sleep, non-rapid eye movement (NREM) sleep, rapid eye movement (REM)-like sleep, and wakefulness (WAKE). We fit hierarchical generalized linear mixed models with nonlinear time effects and found substantial sex differences in sleep. Female mice slept less overall, with less NREM sleep compared to males. Females also exhibited more REM-like sleep and WAKE and had shorter NREM sleep bout lengths. We also conducted a simulation exercise where we simulated a hypothetical treatment that altered the sleep of female mice, but not male mice. In models that included an appropriate sex by treatment interaction, a female-specific treatment response was accurately estimated when sample sizes were equal but was not detected when sample sizes were unequal, and females were underrepresented. Failure to include both sexes in experimental designs or appropriately account for sex during analysis could lead to inaccurate translational recommendations in pre-clinical sleep studies.

Abstract
Background and Objectives: Sex differences are unclear in geriatric sleep medicine, and most evidence comes from inference from preclinical bases or clinical studies conducted on younger people. The aim of this study is to explore sex differences in sleep quality and daytime sleepiness in a cohort of elderly people. Materials and Methods: This cross-sectional study involved subjects aged 65 years or older undergoing multidimensional evaluation, including sleep quality and daytime sleepiness assessment with validated tools. Results: This study included 226 subjects (69.5% women), the majority of whom showed poor sleep quality (64.2%). A logistic regression model put one before the other sleep quality and gender. It initially showed that men were about half likely as women to have poor sleep quality (OR 0.48, 95%CI 0.27-0.86). Nonetheless, after adjusting for cognitive status and mood, the difference became smaller and insignificant (OR 0.72, 95%CI 0.38-1.38). Conclusions: Sex differences in elderly people's sleep quality seem to not be independent, appearing to be affected by alterations in cognitive status and mood.

Abstract
Cardiometabolic diseases remain the leading cause of death in the United States. Lifestyle factors contribute the majority of risk for these diseases. Although diet and exercise have been the primary focus of research on modifiable behaviors to target for interventions to prevent cardiometabolic disease, recent evidence suggests that sleep also plays an important role. Indeed, the updated American Heart Association campaign includes sleep as one of its "Essential Eight". This review details the reciprocally reinforcing positive relationship between sleep and daytime physical activity behaviors and explores how this relationship differs based on age, gender and race. For example, interventions to improve moderate intensity physical activity may be particularly beneficial to women, older adults, and Black Americans, who are at increased risk for sleep disturbances. Communicating to Americans the importance of managing their time to meet current physical activity and sleep recommendations is a challenge given that there are so many competing behaviors consuming large amounts of time (e.g., social media, gaming), but is critical given the importance of these behaviors for cardiometabolic health.

Abstract
AIMS Obesity is a leading contributor to global morbidity and mortality. Short sleep duration is significantly associated with the incidence of obesity, however, it remains unclear whether this relationship is influenced by sex. The purpose of this meta-analysis was to systematically evaluate the evidence of whether the association between short sleep duration and obesity differs between males and females. DATA SYNTHESIS The protocol was registered with PROSPERO (CRD42023374205). From inception through June 2023, Medline, Embase and Web of Science databases were searched for longitudinal cohort studies with minimum 12 months of observation. The quality of studies was assessed using the Newcastle-Ottawa Quality Assessment for Cohort Studies. Results were pooled using a random effects model. Results are expressed as ratio of odds ratios (ROR) with 95% confidence interval (CI). ROR directly estimates the relative strength of the association of interest (measured as odds ratio [OR] between females and males). Sensitivity analysis was performed and inconsistency between studies was assessed using I2 statistics. A total of 4582 articles were retrieved with the search strategy, of which 6 were included. The meta-analysis indicated that the association between short sleep duration and obesity incidence was statistically significant in both men [OR 1.26 (95% CI 1.13-1.40)] and women [OR 1.36 (95% CI 1.16-1.59)]. However, it did not differ significantly between sexes ROR (women/men) 1.04 (95%CI 0.79-1.36; I2 20.1%). CONCLUSIONS This meta-analysis indicates that women and men who subjectively report short sleep duration have similarly increased risks of incident obesity.

Abstract
Many aspects of sleep and circadian physiology are sensitive to participant-level characteristics. While recent research robustly highlights the importance of considering participant-level demographic information, the extent to which this information is consistently collected, and reported in the literature, remains unclear. This article investigates study sample characteristics within the published sleep and chronobiology research over the past 40 years. 6,777 articles were identified and a random sample of 20% was included. The reporting of sample size, age, sex, gender, ethnicity, level of education, socio-economic status, and profession of the study population was scored, and any reported aggregate summary statistics for these variables were recorded. We observed a significant upward trend in the reporting and analysis of demographic variables in sleep and chronobiology research. However, we found that while > 90% of studies reported age or sex, all other variables were reported in < 25% of cases. Reporting quality was highly variable, indicating an opportunity to standardize reporting guidelines for participant-level characteristics to facilitate Meta analyses.

Abstract
Sleep disturbances, encompassing altered sleep physiology or disorders like insomnia and sleep apnea, profoundly impact physiological functions and elevate disease risk. Despite extensive research, the underlying mechanisms and sex-specific differences in sleep disorders remain elusive. While polysomnography serves as a cornerstone for human sleep studies, animal models provide invaluable insights into sleep mechanisms. However, the availability of animal models of sleep disorders is limited, with each model often representing a specific sleep issue or mechanism. Therefore, selecting appropriate animal models for sleep research is critical. Given the significant sex differences in sleep patterns and disorders, incorporating both male and female subjects in studies is essential for uncovering sex-specific mechanisms with clinical relevance. This review provides a comprehensive overview of various rodent models of sleep disturbance, including sleep deprivation, sleep fragmentation, and circadian rhythm dysfunction. We evaluate the advantages and disadvantages of each model and discuss sex differences in sleep and sleep disorders, along with potential mechanisms. We aim to advance our understanding of sleep disorders and facilitate sex-specific interventions.

Abstract
Since 2016, China has progressively relaxed family planning policies to stimulate birth rates. This paper examines the behavioral health repercussions of China's 2016 universal two-child policy (UTCP) by analyzing sleep pattern data from China Family Panel Studies. Napping is a composite indicator that denotes health outcomes, job quality, and personal well-being. It reveals work conditions and environments to some extent. UTCP may lead to heightened social expectations regarding pregnancy likelihood, and changes in social expectations within the workplace may make work environments less equitable and more stressful for females. Leveraging a difference-in-difference model, this paper explores how napping behaviors among the working-age cohort have responded to the policy shifts. Our analysis reveals a gender discrepancy in response to the policy, specifically, females exhibit a discernible reduction in the likelihood of napping, as well as in the duration of both daytime naps and daily sleep. Conversely, such effects are not significant among males. These results suggest policy consequences extend beyond individuals directly impacted by childbirth or contemplating parenthood. Hence, while promoting fertility is still the government's goal, policymakers are encouraged to consider the broader challenges the female population faces from social and workplace environment factors.

Abstract
Objectives This study sought to understand how university student's academic discipline relates to sleep factors including attitudes, hygiene, quality, and duration. Methods Using a cross-sectional approach, a 30-min survey was advertised to students at two Canadian universities in March of 2022. Sleep measures included the Dysfunctional Beliefs and Attitudes Scale, the Sleep Hygiene Index, the Pittsburgh Sleep Quality Index, and the Insomnia Severity Index. Academic discipline was categorized into four groups: Health, Arts, Sciences, and Engineering. Multiple linear regressions were used to investigate (1) the effect of academic discipline on sleep measures, and (2) the effect of academic discipline, dysfunctional sleep attitudes, and sleep hygiene practices on insomnia, sleep quality and duration. Results 1,566 students completed the survey (69.4% women; 80.3% undergraduates). Compared to Health students, Art students had worse dysfunctional sleep attitudes, hygiene, quality, and insomnia severity (p < 0.001). This relationship disappeared after controlling for differences in mental health (p ≥ 0.05). Art students had longer sleep durations (p < 0.01), whereas Engineering students had shorter sleep durations (p < 0.05). When dysfunctional sleep attitudes and hygiene were included in the model, both academic discipline (p < 0.05) and sleep hygiene (p < 0.001) were associated with sleep duration. Sleep hygiene and attitudes were also associated with sleep quality and insomnia severity (p < 0.001), while academic discipline was not (p ≥ 0.05). Discussion These results suggest differences in sleep quality across academic discipline are impacted by dysfunctional sleep attitudes, sleep hygiene, and mental health, whereas differences in sleep duration appear to be independent of these factors. Overall, students in different academic disciplines have unique relationships with sleep and thus may require targeted approaches to improve their sleep. Future interventions should focus on supporting sleep hygiene and attitudes to improve students' sleep and well-being.

Abstract
OBJECTIVE Good sleep quality is essential for adolescent health, yet sleep difficulties persist in this age group. The 6-item Brief Pittsburgh Sleep Quality Index (B-PSQI) was recently developed to improve sleep quality assessment, however, its validity in adolescents remains unexplored. This study examined the B-PSQI's psychometric properties in Spanish adolescents and adapted the scoring method to age-specific sleep recommendations. METHODS A cross-sectional study involving 1,065 adolescents (15-17 years; 56.8% female) was conducted in public high schools. Sleep quality was measured using the B-PSQI, the Insomnia Severity Index (ISI), the short Patient-Reported Outcomes Measurement Information System (PROMIS), and the Epworth Sleepiness Scale (ESS). Additionally, depression and anxiety were assessed using the Depression, Anxiety, and Stress Scales. Reliability, validity, and measurement invariance were analyzed. RESULTS The B-PSQI global scores were 4.5 (SD = 1.9) for the original scoring method and 5.4 (SD = 2.8) for the age-adjusted. The age-adjusted B-PSQI showed satisfactory reliability (ω = 0.84) and concurrent, convergent, and discriminant validity (ISI rS = 0.67; PROMIS rS = 0.71; anxiety rS = 0.40; depression rS = 0.42; ESS rS = 0.29). Adequacy for one-factor structure (χ2(4) = 53.9; CFI = 0.97; TLI = 0.92; RMSEA = 0.108; SRMR = 0.05) and invariance across sexes were supported. Both B-PSQI scoring methods showed similar psychometric properties, but the original yielded a higher percentage of poor sleepers (43.1%; cutoff ≥5) than the age-adjusted version (41.9%; cutoff ≥6). CONCLUSIONS Findings suggest that the B-PSQI is a valid and reliable measure to assess adolescent sleep quality. Its scoring can be adjusted to provide age-specific criteria for good sleep. The B-PSQI has potential utility for screening sleep problems and facilitating overall health promotion in adolescents.

Abstract
Several pivotal differences in sleep and sleep disorders are recognized between women and men. This is not only due to changes in hormonal balance during women's reproductive life, such as in pregnancy and menopause. Women are more likely to report insomnia and non-specific symptoms of apneas, such as fatigue or mood disturbance, compared to men. Thus, it is important for clinicians and researchers to take sex and gender differences into account when addressing sleep disorders in order to acknowledge the biology unique to women. We present a narrative review that delves into the primary sleep disorders, starting from basic science, to explore the impact of gender differences on sleep and the current status of research on women's sleep health.

Abstract
PURPOSE Physical disabilities may exacerbate the natural decline in sleep quality that occurs with aging. In the current study, we assessed sleep quality and medicinal sleep aid use among 87 community-dwelling older adults with (n = 24) and without (n = 63) physical disabilities. METHOD Sleep quality, duration, and efficiency were assessed subjectively with the Pittsburgh Sleep Quality Index. Sleep duration and efficiency were objectively measured with actigraphy. Participants self-reported medicinal sleep aid use. RESULTS Significant group differences were observed in sleep duration measured objectively (p = 0.01) and subjectively (p = 0.04). No other group differences were observed for sleep factors (p > 0.05) or medicinal sleep aid use (p = 0.41). CONCLUSION Findings show that physical disability may be a factor in sleep duration; however, physical disability was not found to be associated with worsened sleep perception or greater reliance on medicinal sleep aids. Future research should consider longer objective actigraphy assessment windows and explore potential subgroup differences in sex and race/ethnicity. Abstract
A growing interest has been recently reported in exploring sleep duration within psychology context in particular to its relation to some mental chronic diseases such as depression. The aim of this study is to investigate the association between self-reported sleep hours as an outcome and self-perceived depression among Emirati adults, after adjusting for sociodemographic factors such as age, gender, marital status, and employment status. We performed a cross-sectional analysis using 11,455 participants baseline data of the UAE Healthy Future Study (UAEHFS). Univariate and multivariate logistic regression models were performed with self-reported sleep hours as an outcome. The predictors were the self-reported depression by measuring the PHQ-8 score, sociodemographic factors (age, gender, marital status, and employment status) Odds ratios with 95% confidence intervals (CI) were reported. In a sensitivity analysis, a multivariate imputation by chained equations (MICE) procedure was applied with classification and Regression Trees (CART) to impute missing values. Overall, 11,455 participants were included in the final analysis of this study. Participants' median age was 32.0 years (Interquartile-Range: 24.0, 39.0). There were 6,217 (54.3%) males included in this study. In total, 4,488 (63.6%) of the participants reported sleep duration of more than 7 hours. Statistically significant negative association was observed between the total PHQ-8 score as a measure for depression and binarized self-reported sleep, OR = 0.961 (95% CI: 0.948, 0.974). For one unit increase in age and BMI, the odds ratio of reporting shorter sleep was 0.979 (95% CI: 0.969, 0.990) and 0.987 (95% CI: 0.977, 0.998), respectively. The study findings indicate a correlation between self-reported depression and an increased probability of individuals reporting shorter self-perceived sleep durations especially when considering the sociodemographic factors as predictors. There was a variation in the effect of depression on sleep duration among different study groups. In particular, the association between reported sleep duration and reported depression, students and unemployed individuals have reported longer sleep hours as compared to employed participants. Also, married individuals reported a higher percentage of longer sleep duration as compared to single and unmarried ones when examined reported depression as a predictor to sleep duration. However, there was no gender differences in self-perceived sleep duration when associated with reported depression.

Abstract
OBJECTIVES The populational impact of poor sleep quality and the risk of dementia is unclear. We analyzed the Population Attributable Fraction (PAF) of poor sleep quality for dementia, and its association with other two sleep parameters through self-reported and single questions collected in a large-scale Brazilian cohort (ELSI-Brazil). METHODS A subset of the ELSI-Brazil with complete responses to sleep quality was retrieved for this study. This is a large representative sample of the Brazilian elderly population with an extensive assessment of sociodemographic and health risk variables. Prevalence of poor sleep quality was estimated according to the complex sample design, and its PAF was measured using a meta-analytic relative risk. A total of 6024 (56.3% women, mean 62.8 ± 9.5 years of age) individuals had complete responses. RESULTS The prevalence of poor sleep quality was 24.9% (95%CI 23%-26%), and the PAF of poor sleep quality including other 10 modifiable risk factors of dementia was 52.5% in Brazil. Secondary analyses identified that sleep quality, restorative sleep and sleep drug usage varied considerably according to age ranges, race, and gender. CONCLUSIONS Poor sleep quality is an important populational modifiable risk factor for dementia in Brazil. Targeted interventions may provide an important impact in preventing dementia in low- and middle-income countries.

Abstract
Epidemiological studies show that modifiable risk factors account for approximately 40% of the population variability in risk of developing dementia, including sporadic Alzheimer's disease (AD). Recent findings suggest that these factors may also modify disease trajectories of people with autosomal-dominant AD. With positron emission tomography imaging, it is now possible to study the disease many years before its clinical onset. Such studies can provide key knowledge regarding pathways for either the prevention of pathology or the postponement of its clinical expression. The former "resistance pathway" suggests that modifiable risk factors could affect amyloid and tau burden decades before the appearance of cognitive impairment. Alternatively, the resilience pathway suggests that modifiable risk factors may mitigate the symptomatic expression of AD pathology on cognition. These pathways are not mutually exclusive and may appear at different disease stages. Here, in a narrative review, we present neuroimaging evidence that supports both pathways in sporadic AD and autosomal-dominant AD. We then propose mechanisms for their protective effect. Among possible mechanisms, we examine neural and vascular mechanisms for the resistance pathway. We also describe brain maintenance and functional compensation as bases for the resilience pathway. Improved mechanistic understanding of both pathways may suggest new interventions.

Abstract
Background Both short and long sleep durations are adversely associated with numerous chronic conditions, including cardiovascular disease (CVD), diabetes, hypertension, and mortality. The American Academy of Sleep Medicine recommends adults in the United States sleep at least 7 hours and less than 9 hours per night to maintain optimal health. It remains unclear how sleep duration trajectories over time are associated with mortality. Methods This observational cohort study includes 46,928 Black and White adults (mean age: 53 ± 9 years) who enrolled in the Southern Community Cohort Study between 2002-2009 and completed a follow-up survey in 2008-2013. Participants were categorized into nine sleep duration trajectory categories based on the reported average sleep duration between study enrollment and at follow-up. Participant vital status and date and cause of death were ascertained via linkage to the National Death Index through 2022. Cox regression analysis was performed to estimate hazard ratios (HR) and 95% confidence intervals (CI) for the association between sleep duration trajectory and all-cause and cause-specific mortality (CVD, cancer, and neurodegenerative disease) after adjustment for sociodemographic characteristics, health behaviors, and clinical factors. Results During a median 12.6 years of follow-up, we documented 13,579 deaths, including 4,135 from CVD, 3,067 from cancer, and 544 from neurodegenerative diseases. Compared to the optimal sleep duration trajectory (maintaining 7-9 hours), all sub-optimal trajectories were associated with significant 6 to 33% greater risk of all-cause mortality in fully adjusted models. Compared to the optimal sleep trajectory, three of the sub-optimal trajectories were associated with increased CVD mortality, with HRs ranging from 1.20 to 1.34. The short-long trajectory was associated with the greatest risk of all-cause mortality (HR:1.33; 95%CI: 1.21, 1.46) and the long-short trajectory was associated with the greatest CVD mortality risk (HR:1.34; 95%CI: 1.10, 1.65). The healthy-long trajectory was associated with the greatest risk of cancer mortality (HR: 1.19; 95%CI:1.00, 1.41). None of the sub-optimal trajectories was associated with neurodegenerative disease mortality. Conclusions Suboptimal sleep duration trajectories were associated with increased risk of all-cause mortality as well as CVD mortality. Findings highlight the importance of maintaining healthy sleep duration throughout midlife to reduce mortality risk.

Abstract
Sleep hygiene behaviours are recommendations given to both clinical and non-clinical populations with a focus on modifying behaviours to maximise sleep outcomes. However, methodological issues present in sleep hygiene research make it difficult to conclusively determine the impact of each behaviour. This study aimed to address these issues by adopting a two-week, repeated measures design which incorporated objective sleep measures and used linear mixed effect modelling to assess the daily association of a wide range of sleep hygiene behaviours on sleep in a non-clinical, university sample. Between-persons effects revealed that bedtime and frequency of daytime napping, alcohol use, and social media use were negatively related to sleep duration while waketime and frequency of too much water consumption were positively related to sleep duration. Within-person effects revealed that later than usual bedtime, earlier than usual waketime, no sunlight exposure, poor ventilation, having an unpleasant conversation before bed were negatively associated with sleep duration whereas using alcohol to deliberately help full asleep was positively related to sleep duration. In contrast, disproportionately more behaviours were not significantly related to either sleep outcome, only some of which could be explained by individual differences, which suggests that more research is needed to determine the conditions under which these behaviours affect sleep, if at all.

Abstract
OBJECTIVES To investigate if the Jenkins Sleep Scale (JSS) demonstrates sex-related differential item functioning (DIF). DESIGN Cross-sectional study. SETTING Survey data from the Finnish Public Sector study (2015-2017). PARTICIPANTS 77 967 employees in the Finnish public sector, with a mean age of 51.9 (SD 13.1) years and 82% women. OUTCOME MEASURES Item response theory estimates: difficulty and discrimination parameters of the JSS and differences in these parameters between men and women. RESULTS The mean JSS total score was 6.4 (4.8) points. For all four items of the JSS, the difficulty parameter demonstrated a slight shift towards underestimation of the severity of sleep difficulties. The discrimination ability of all four items was moderate to high. For the JSS composite score, overall discrimination ability was moderate (0.98, 95% CI 0.97 to 0.99). Mild uniform DIF (p<0.001) was seen: two items showed better discrimination ability among men and two others among women. CONCLUSIONS The JSS showed overall good psychometric properties among this healthy population of employees in the Finnish public sector. The JSS was able to discriminate people with different severities of sleep disturbances. However, when using the JSS, the respondents might slightly underestimate the severity of these disturbances. While the JSS may produce slightly different results when answered by men and women, these sex-related differences are probably negligible when applied to clinical situations.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Sleep problems following childhood cancer treatment may persist into adulthood, exacerbating cancer-related late effects and putting survivors at risk for poor physical and psychosocial functioning. This study examines sleep in long-term survivors and their siblings to identify risk factors and disease correlates. METHODS Childhood cancer survivors (≥5 years from diagnosis; n = 12 340; 51.5% female; mean [SD] age = 39.4 [9.6] years) and siblings (n = 2395; 57.1% female; age = 44.6 [10.5] years) participating in the Childhood Cancer Survivor Study completed the Pittsburgh Sleep Quality Index (PSQI). Multivariable Poisson-error generalized estimating equation compared prevalence of binary sleep outcomes between survivors and siblings and evaluated cancer history and chronic health conditions (CHC) for associations with sleep outcomes, adjusting for age (at diagnosis and current), sex, race/ethnicity, and body mass index. RESULTS Survivors were more likely to report clinically elevated composite PSQI scores (>5; 45.1% vs 40.0%, adjusted prevalence ratio [PR] = 1.20, 95% CI = 1.13 to 1.27), symptoms of insomnia (38.8% vs 32.0%, PR = 1.26, 95% CI = 1.18 to 1.35), snoring (18.0% vs 17.4%, PR = 1.11, 95% CI = 1.01 to 1.23), and sleep medication use (13.2% vs 11.5%, PR = 1.28, 95% CI = 1.12 to 1.45) compared with siblings. Within cancer survivors, PSQI scores were similar across diagnoses. Anthracycline exposure (PR = 1.13, 95% CI = 1.03 to 1.25), abdominal radiation (PR = 1.16, 95% CI = 1.04 to 1.29), and increasing CHC burden were associated with elevated PSQI scores (PRs = 1.21-1.48). CONCLUSIONS Among survivors, sleep problems were more closely related to CHC than diagnosis or treatment history, although longitudinal research is needed to determine the direction of this association. Frequent sleep-promoting medication use suggests interest in managing sleep problems; behavioral sleep intervention is advised for long-term management.

Abstract
Introduction Sleep problems are one of the most persistent symptoms of post-COVID syndrome in adults. However, most recent research on sleep quality has relied on the impact of the pandemic, with scarcely any data for older adults on the long-term consequences of COVID infection. This study aims to understand whether older individuals present persistently impaired sleep quality after COVID-19 infection and possible moderators for this outcome. Methods This is a cross-sectional analysis of a longitudinal cohort study with 70 elders with 6-month-previous SARS-CoV-2 infection and 153 controls. The Pittsburgh Sleep Quality Index (PSQI) was used to assess sleep quality; Geriatric Depression Scale and Geriatric Anxiety Inventory for screening depression and anxiety. Demographics and comorbid conditions were collected. Results The mean age of participants was 66,97 ± 4,64 years. There were no statistical differences in depression and anxiety between groups. Poor sleep quality was found in 52,9% and 43,8% of the COVID and control groups (p=.208). After controlling for multiple variables, all the following factors resulted in greater chances of poor sleep quality: female gender (OR, 2.12; p=.027), memory complaints (OR, 2.49; p=.074), insomnia (OR, 3.66; p=.032), anxiety (OR, 5.46; p<.001), depression (OR, 7.26; p=.001), joint disease (OR, 1.80; p=.050), glucose intolerance (OR, 2.20; p=.045), psychoactive drugs (OR, 8.36; p<.001), diuretics (OR, 2.46; p=.034), and polypharmacy (OR, 2.84; p=.016). Conclusion Psychosocial burden in the context of the COVID-19 pandemic and pre-existing conditions seems to influence the sleep quality of older adults more than SARS-CoV-2 infection.

Abstract
The internalizing spectrum encompasses a subset of psychopathologies characterized by emotional liability, anhedonia, anxiousness, distress, and fear, and includes, among others, diagnoses of major depressive disorder (MDD), generalized anxiety disorder (GAD), and posttraumatic stress disorder (PTSD). In this review, we describe the vast body of work highlighting a role for sex and gender in the environment, symptom onset, genetic liability, and disorder progression and comorbidities of MDD, GAD, and PTSD. We also point the reader to different language used in diverse fields to describe sexual and gender minorities that may complicate the interpretation of emerging literature from the social sciences, psychiatric and psychological sciences, and genetics. Finally, we identify several gaps in knowledge that we hope serve as launch-points for expanding the scope of psychiatric studies beyond binarized sex-stratification. Despite being under-represented in genomics studies, placing emphasis on inclusion of sexual and gender diverse participants in these works will hopefully improve our understanding of disorder etiology using genetics as one tool to inform how biology (e.g., hormone concentration) and environmental variables (e.g., exposure to traumatic events) contribute to differences in symptom onset, pattern, and long-term trajectory.

Abstract
OBJECTIVES Sleep health inequities likely contribute to disparities in health outcomes. Our objective was to identify social determinants of sleep health among middle-aged/older adults in Canada, where prior evidence is limited. METHODS We analyzed cross-sectional data from the Canadian Longitudinal Study on Aging, a survey of over 30,000 community-dwelling adults aged 45-85years. Self-reported measures included sleep duration, sleep satisfaction, and sleep efficiency. We explored associations between sleep measures and social determinants of health. We used modified Poisson regression to estimate prevalence ratios for sleep satisfaction and sleep efficiency, and linear regression for sleep duration. Estimates were adjusted for all social, lifestyle, and clinical covariates. We explored effect modification by sex. RESULTS Of the 11 social determinants explored, all were significantly associated with at least one domain of sleep health. These associations were reduced to 9 variables with adjustment for all social variables, and 7 with further adjustment for lifestyle and clinical covariates, including differences by sex, age, education, marital status, employment, race/ethnicity, and sexual orientation. Better sleep health in >1 domain was observed among males, older age groups (65 and older), higher income groups, the retired group, and homeowners with adjustment for social variables, and only in males and older age groups with additional adjustment for lifestyle and clinical variables. Only sleep duration associations were modified by sex. CONCLUSIONS Sleep health disparities among Canadian adults exist across socioeconomic gradients and racial/ethnic minority groups. Poor sleep health among disadvantaged groups warrants increased attention as a public health problem in Canada.

Abstract
Purpose The COVID-19 pandemic has had a profound impact on mental health worldwide, with depression and sleep problems among the most common issues experienced by many individuals. Depression can lead to sleep problems, which can increase the risk of developing depressive symptoms. However, it is unclear which United States (US) sub-population was most affected by depression and sleep problems during the pandemic. Methods We conducted a secondary analysis using self-reported data from the 2021 National Health Interview Survey (NHIS), focusing on adults aged 18 years and above (n=29,763). We utilized self-reported responses to questions about prescription medication and frequency of depressive feelings to determine participants' depression status. Appropriate weights were applied to account for the sampling design of the surveys. Our analysis involved descriptive statistics and chi-squared tests to compare sociodemographic, clinical, behavioral, and sleep-related characteristics between US adults with and without depression. Additionally, logistic regression was used to examine the associations between sleep duration, sleep quality and depression. Results The overall prevalence of depression in our sample was 44.4%. It were higher in certain demographic groups, including younger adults (18-39 years, 47.7%), non-Hispanic whites (47.9%), females (50.1%), those at the lower income bracket (52.2%), those with no college or degree (48.7%) uninsured individuals (45.2%), and those reporting poor general health (71.9%). Individuals with depression had a 12% increased odds of experiencing short sleep (aOR: 1.12, 95% CI:1.04-1.20, p<0.001), 34% increased odds of experiencing long sleep (aOR: 1.34, 95% CI: 1.20-1.50, p < 0.001) and more than 2.5 fold increased odds of reporting poor sleep quality (aOR:2.57, 95% CI: 2.40-2.78; p<0.0001). In the multivariate analysis, all variables (sex, race/ethnicity, education, health insurance coverage, marital status, general health status and use of sleep medications, smoking and alcohol use status) were significantly predictors of poor sleep quality, with the exceptions of age and family income. Conclusion The findings emphasize the need to address sleep health in treating depression, especially during times of public health crises.

Abstract
Alzheimer's disease (AD) affects more women than men, with women throughout the menopausal transition potentially being the most under researched and at-risk group. Sleep disruptions, which are an established risk factor for AD, increase in prevalence with normal aging and are exacerbated in women during menopause. Sex differences showing more disrupted sleep patterns and increased AD pathology in women and female animal models have been established in literature, with much emphasis placed on loss of circulating gonadal hormones with age. Interestingly, increases in gonadotropins such as follicle stimulating hormone are emerging to be a major contributor to AD pathogenesis and may also play a role in sleep disruption, perhaps in combination with other lesser studied hormones. Several sleep influencing regions of the brain appear to be affected early in AD progression and some may exhibit sexual dimorphisms that may contribute to increased sleep disruptions in women with age. Additionally, some of the most common sleep disorders, as well as multiple health conditions that impair sleep quality, are more prevalent and more severe in women. These conditions are often comorbid with AD and have bi-directional relationships that contribute synergistically to cognitive decline and neuropathology. The association during aging of increased sleep disruption and sleep disorders, dramatic hormonal changes during and after menopause, and increased AD pathology may be interacting and contributing factors that lead to the increased number of women living with AD.

Abstract
Early life stress is robustly associated with poor sleep across life. Preliminary studies suggest that these associations may begin already in utero. Here, we study the longitudinal associations of prenatal psychosocial stress with sleep across childhood, and assess whether prenatal stress interacts with genetic liability for poor sleep.The study is embedded in the Generation R population-based birth cohort. Caregivers reported on prenatal psychosocial stress (life events, contextual, parental or interpersonal stressors) and on children's sleep at ages 2 months, 1.5, 2, 3 and 6 years. The study sample consisted of 4,930 children; polygenic risk scores for sleep traits were available in 2,063.Prenatal stress was consistently associated with more sleep problems across assessments. Effect sizes ranged from small (B = 0.21, 95%CI: 0.14;0.27) at 2 months to medium (B = 0.45, 95%CI: 0.38;0.53) at 2 years. Prenatal stress was moreover associated with shorter sleep duration at 2 months (Bhrs = -0.22, 95%CI: -0.32;-0.12) and at 2 years (Bhrs = -0.04, 95%CI -0.07; -0.001), but not at 3 years (Bhrs = 0.02, 95%CI: -0.02;0.06). Prenatal negative life events interacted with polygenic risk for insomnia to exacerbate sleep problems at 6 years (Binteraction = 0.07, 95%CI: 0.02;0.13).Psychosocial stress during pregnancy has negative associations with children's sleep that persist across childhood, and are exacerbated by genetic liability for insomnia. Associations with sleep duration were more pronounced in infancy and seem to attenuate with age. These findings highlight the role of the prenatal environment for developing sleep regulation, and could inform early intervention programs targeting sleep in children from high-risk pregnancies.

Abstract
Sleep health is an essential component to overall health. Because of numerous societal, economic, and biological factors, obtaining adequate sleep poses a unique challenge to aging women. Yet, women have been traditionally understudied in sleep research. An increasing body of research supports abnormal sleep duration as a risk factor for obesity, cardiovascular disease, and mortality. This review focuses specifically on 3 areas of the discussion of insufficient sleep in women: (1) the mysterious poor health of long sleepers, (2) the potential underlying mechanisms linking abnormal sleep duration and cardiometabolic health, and (3) the need to investigate multiple levels of social determinants driving sleep disparities.

Abstract
Both the circadian clock and sex hormone signaling can strongly influence brain function, yet little is known about how these 2 powerful modulatory systems might interact during complex neural processes like memory consolidation. Individually, the molecular components and action of each of these systems have been fairly well-characterized, but there is a fundamental lack of information about how these systems cooperate. In the circadian system, clock genes function as timekeeping molecules that convey time-of-day information on a well-stereotyped cycle that is governed by the suprachiasmatic nucleus. Keeping time is particularly important to synchronize various physiological processes across the brain and body, including those that regulate memory consolidation. Similarly, sex hormones are powerful modulators of memory, with androgens, estrogens, and progestins, all influencing memory consolidation within memory-relevant brain regions like the hippocampus. Despite clear evidence that each system can influence memory individually, exactly how the circadian and hormonal systems might interact to impact memory consolidation remains unclear. Research investigating either sex hormone action or circadian gene function within memory-relevant brain regions has unveiled several notable places in which the two systems could interact to control memory. Here, we bring attention to known interactions between the circadian clock and sex hormone signaling. We then review sex hormone-mediated control of memory consolidation, highlighting potential nodes through which the circadian system might interact during memory formation. We suggest that the bidirectional relationship between these two systems is essential for proper control of memory formation based on an animal's hormonal and circadian state.

Abstract
Sleep problems, such as difficulty falling asleep, staying asleep, early awakening with failure to continue sleep, and altered sleep-wake cycle, are common in the general population. This cross-sectional study with 6,929 older adults (≥ 60 years) aimed to estimate the prevalence of different types of sleep problems, their associated factors, and the population-attributable fraction of associated factors among older adults. The outcome variables consisted of self-reported sleep problems: insomnia (initial, intermediate, late, and any type of insomnia), poor sleep quality, and daytime sleepiness. The independent variables were sociodemographic and behavioral characteristics and health conditions. The prevalence proportions were initial insomnia (49.1%), intermediate insomnia (49.2%), late insomnia (45.9%), any type of insomnia (58.6%), poor sleep quality (15.6%), and daytime sleepiness (38.4%). Female sex, presence of two or more chronic diseases, not eating the recommended amount of fruits and vegetables, and regular and bad/very bad self-rated health were positively associated with the sleep problems investigated. Consuming alcohol once a month or more was inversely associated with initial insomnia. Population attributable fraction estimates ranged from 3% to 19% considering two or more chronic diseases, not eating the recommended amount of fruits and vegetables, and regular and bad/very bad self-rated health. High prevalence of self-reported sleep problems was evinced in older adults. These results can be useful to guide public health services in the creation of informational, evaluative, and screening strategies for sleep problems in older Brazilian adults.

Abstract
Over the last few decades, numerous scientific studies have investigated the possible association between sleep duration and adiposity during childhood, since it has been reported that sleep deprivation causes a related increase in caloric intake. Even though the underlying pathogenetic mechanisms are still under study and not completely known, the effect of dietetic habits and nutrient intake on sleep quality and patterns has been reported. The aim of this study is to explore the intricate interplay between food intake/diet patterns and pediatric sleep disturbances in children and adolescents with obesity, emphasizing the importance of not underestimating this aspect in the prevention and treatment of this complex disease. Recent evidence supports a high correlation between specific diet patterns and foods with sleep disturbances in children at all ages. Diets rich in fiber, fruit, vegetables, and anti-inflammatory nutrients and low in saturated fats seem to promote better sleep quality. Sleep disturbances are, in turn, risk factors for the development of obesity. Therefore, food strategies should be applied to counteract this harmful process. Unraveling the complex links between dietary habits, sleep patterns, and obesity is essential for developing effective strategies to combat this critical public health issue.

Abstract
The global surge in obesity rates is closely linked to the rise in sleep deprivation and prevalence of sleep disorders. This study aimed to investigate the association between weekend catch-up sleep (CUS) and obesity among Korean adults. Using multiple logistic regression analysis, we analyzed the data of 6790 adults aged >19 years obtained from the Korea National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey 2016-2021. In the subgroup analysis, we conducted multiple logistic regression analysis to determine the association between weekend CUS and obesity, stratified by sex. Women were significantly more likely to be obese than men (odds ratio (OR) = 0.53, 95% confidence interval (CI) = 0.46-0.61). Obesity was associated with 1 ≤ weekend CUS < 2 (OR = 0.86, 95% CI = 0.75-0.99) but not with weekend CUS ≤ 0. Compared to men, women had a lower obesity risk when engaging in weekend supplementary sleep that was 1 ≤ weekend CUS < 2 (OR = 0.78, 95% CI = 0.63-0.97). Our findings revealed that weekend CUS was associated with obesity. Our findings suggest that weekend CUS may offer a form of biological protection against obesity, and they contribute to a better understanding of this association and may serve as a basis for better obesity management.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Clinical predictors of sleep quality in patients with fibromyalgia syndrome (FMS) are still unknown. By identifying these factors, we could raise new mechanistic hypotheses and guide management approaches. We aimed to describe the sleep quality of FMS patients and to explore the clinical and quantitative sensory testing (QST) predictors of poor sleep quality and its subcomponents. METHODS This study is a cross-sectional analysis of an ongoing clinical trial. We performed linear regression models between sleep quality (Pittsburgh Sleep Quality Index [PSQI]) and demographic, clinical, and QST variables, controlling for age and gender. Predictors for the total PSQI score and its seven subcomponents were found using a sequential modeling approach. RESULTS We included 65 patients. The PSQI score was 12.78 ± 4.39, with 95.39% classified as poor sleepers. Sleep disturbance, use of sleep medications, and subjective sleep quality were the worst subdomains. We found poor PSQI scores were highly associated with symptom severity (FIQR score and PROMIS fatigue), pain severity, and higher depression levels, explaining up to 31% of the variance. Fatigue and depression scores also predicted the subjective sleep quality and daytime dysfunction subcomponents. Heart rate changes (surrogate of physical conditioning) predicted the sleep disturbance subcomponent. QST variables were not associated with sleep quality or its subcomponents. CONCLUSIONS Symptom severity, fatigue, pain, and depression (but no central sensitization) are the main predictors of poor sleep quality. Heart rate changes independently predicted the sleep disturbance subdomain (the most affected one in our sample), suggesting an essential role of physical conditioning in modulating sleep quality in FMS patients. This underscores the need for multidimensional treatments targeting depression and physical activity to improve the sleep quality of FMS patients.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Changes in the quality of sleep are reported often in cancer patients and have a major impact on general health. However, insomnia tends to be insufficiently evaluated and managed. AIM The aim of the study was to analyze the perception of clinical staff working in oncology units regarding patients' sleep disorders. Furthermore, we assessed the prevalence of insomnia in this category of professionals. MATERIALS AND METHODS The study was cross sectional and used a descriptive and correlational design. Clinical personnel working in oncology departments were invited to complete a questionnaire regarding sleep problems in patients, and optionally, the Pittsburgh sleep quality index questionnaire was administered. Correlations between age, profession, experience, and their responses were statistically analyzed. RESULTS We gathered 101 responses, with 63.4% coming from doctors. With one exception, all professionals observed changes in sleep patterns in patients, but less than a third were actively looking for these problems and only three health professionals used questionnaires. No significant differences in answers were noted based on age, profession, or experience. Regarding professionals, 45.6% of them had impaired sleep based on the Pittsburgh questionnaire results. CONCLUSION Oncology staff are aware of the existence and impact of sleep problems, but active assessment for sleep problems is low. There is a relative high prevalence of poor sleep quality among oncology staff. In order to improve the well-being of patients, the quality of sleep should be documented as part of the care plan. The existence of guidelines is desirable.

Abstract
OBJECTIVE The objective of this study is to examine the within-person relationships between sleep duration and next-day stress and affect in the daily life of individuals with T1D. METHODS Study participants were recruited in the Function and Emotion in Everyday Life with Type 1 Diabetes (FEEL-T1D) study. Sleep duration was derived by synthesizing objective (actigraphy) and self-report measures. General and diabetes-specific stress and positive and negative affect were measured using ecological momentary assessment. Multilevel regression was used to examine the within-person relationships between sleep duration and next-day stress and affect. Cross-level interactions were used to explore whether gender and baseline depression and anxiety moderated these within-person relationships. RESULTS Adults with T1D (n = 166) completed measurements for 14 days. The average age was 41.0 years, and 91 participants (54.8%) were female. The average sleep duration was 7.3 h (SD = 1.2 h). Longer sleep was significantly associated with lower general stress (p < 0.001) but not diabetes-specific stress (p = 0.18) on the next day. There were significant within-person associations of longer sleep with lower levels on next-day negative affect (overall, p = 0.002, disappoint, p = 0.05; sad, p = 0.05; tense, p < 0.001; upset, p = 0.008; anxious, p = 0.04). There were no significant associations with positive affect. Examination of the interaction effects did not reveal significant differential relationships for men and women and for individuals with and without depression or anxiety at baseline. CONCLUSION Findings from this study suggest optimizing sleep duration as an important interventional target for better managing general stress and improving daily emotional wellbeing of individuals with T1D.

Abstract
Strong evidence supports a bidirectional association between sleep disturbances and posttraumatic stress disorder (PTSD). Affect - temporary internal states experienced as feeling good or bad, energized or enervated - may play a central role in explaining this link. The current systematic review summarizes the literature on associations between sleep, PTSD, and affect among trauma-exposed adults. We systematically searched five electronic databases (PubMed, PsycInfo, PTSDpubs, Web of Science, CINAHL) using the Preferred Reporting Items for Systematic Reviews and Meta-Analyses (PRISMA) 2020 guidelines. Of 2656 screened articles, 6 studies met inclusion criteria. Four findings emerged: (1) greater insomnia symptom severity predicted greater PTSD symptom severity above the influence of negative affect, (2) negative affect mediated the effect of sleep quality on next-day PTSD symptom severity, (3) positive affect mediated the effect of PTSD symptom severity on insomnia symptom severity and sleep disturbances, and (4) greater negative affect (specifically, greater anger) was associated with greater severity of PTSD and sleep disturbances. Findings highlight areas for future research, such as the need to investigate more dimensions, timescales, and methods of studies simultaneously assessing affect, sleep, and PTSD, as well as the need for more longitudinal and experimental work to determine causality across these constructs.
