Abstract
Our study aimed to investigate the relationship between sleep-wake changes and depressive symptoms events among midlife women. We enrolled 1579 women aged 44-56 years who had no clinically relevant depressive symptoms at baseline. Depressive symptoms were assessed at each visit using the Center for Epidemiologic Studies Depression scale. At the third and fourth follow-up visits, women reported their sleep habits. The sleep midpoint was defined as the time to fall asleep plus one-half of the sleep duration. Sleep-wake changes were determined by the difference in the midpoint of sleep between the third and fourth visits, which were 1 year apart. The median follow-up time was 7 years (range 1-7 years). Cox proportional hazard models were fitted to calculate hazard ratios and 95% confidence intervals for the incidence of depressive symptoms associated with sleep-wake changes. After adjusting for potential confounding factors, the hazard ratio (95% confidence interval) of depressive symptoms for severe sleep midpoint changes was 1.51 (1.12, 2.05) compared with mild sleep midpoint changes. This relationship remained statistically significant and changed little when additionally controlling for sleep duration, sleep quality, insomnia symptoms, use of sleep medications, use of nervous medications, glucose, insulin, lipids, dietary energy intake, and C-reactive protein. Our findings indicate that exposure to long-term severe sleep-wake changes increases the risk of depressive symptoms in midlife women.

Abstract
Background This investigation sought to elucidate the correlations between alcohol intake and trajectories of fasting blood glucose (FBG) among American women in midlife. Methods Our analysis was rooted in the foundational data from the Study of Women's Health Across the Nation (SWAN), a comprehensive longitudinal study centered on US women during their midlife transition. We employed group-based trajectory modeling to chart the FBG trajectories spanning from 1996 to 2005. Employing logistic regression, we gauged the odds ratios (ORs) and 95% confidence intervals (CIs) to draw connections between initial alcohol consumption and FBG trajectory patterns, whilst controlling for predominant potential confounders. Results Our cohort comprised 2,578 women in midlife, ranging in age from 42 to 52, each having a minimum of three subsequent FPG assessments. We discerned two distinct FBG trajectories: a low-stable pattern (n = 2,467) and a high-decreasing pattern (n = 111). Contrasted with the low-stable group, our data showcased an inverse relationship between alcohol intake and the high-decreasing FBG trajectory in the fully adjusted model 3. The most pronounced reduction was evident in the highest tertile of daily servings of alcoholic beverages (OR: 0.23, 95% CI: 0.10-0.52, p < 0.001), percentage of kilocalories sourced from alcoholic beverages (OR: 0.30, 95% CI: 0.16-0.58, p < 0.001), and daily caloric intake from alcoholic beverages (OR: 0.31, 95% CI: 0.16-0.62, p < 0.001). Conclusion Moderate alcohol consumption may protect against high FPG trajectories in middle-aged women in a dose-response manner. Further researches are needed to investigate this causality in midlife women.

Abstract
Menopause is a significant milestone in a woman's life, characterized by decreasing estradiol (E2) and increasing follicle-stimulating hormone (FSH) levels. Growing evidence suggests that air pollution may affect reproductive health and disrupt hormone profiles, yet the associations in women undergoing menopausal transition (MT) remains underexplored. We examined the associations between annual air pollutant exposures and repeated measures of E2 and FSH in 1365 women with known final menstrual period (FMP) date from the Study of Women's Health Across the Nation. Air pollution was calculated as the annual averages of 24-h average PM2.5 levels, daily one-hour maximum NO2 levels, and daily 8-h maximum O3 levels. Linear mixed models with piece-wise linear splines were used to model non-linear trajectories of E2 and FSH in three distinct time periods: up to 2 years before the FMP (early MT), within 2 years before and 2 years after FMP (transmenopause), and >2 years post-FMP (postmenopause). In the transmenopausal period, an interquartile (5 μg/m3) increase in PM2.5 was associated with a significant decrease in E2 levels (-15.7 %, 95 % CI: -23.7, -6.8), and a 10 ppb increase in NO2 was associated with a significant decrease in E2 levels (-9.2 %, 95 % CI: -16.2, -1.7). A higher PM2.5 was also associated with an accelerated rate of decline in E2. Regarding FSH, a 10 ppb increase in NO2 was associated with decline in FSH levels (-11.7 %, 95 % CI: -21.8, -0.1) in the early MT and accelerated rates of decline in the postmenopause (-1.1 % per year, 95 % CI: -2.1, -0.1). Additionally, inverse associations between O3 and FSH were observed in the transmenopause and postmenopause. Our study suggests that increases in PM2.5, NO2, and O3 exposures are linked to significant declines in E2 and FSH levels across menopausal stages, suggesting the detrimental impact of air pollutants on women's reproductive hormones.

Abstract
INTRODUCTION Obesity during perimenopausal transition can be attributed to various factors. Identifying these factors is crucial in preventing obesity and developing effective strategies to manage weight during this phase. This review aimed to systematically understand predictors of obesity during menopausal transition. METHODS The review followed the Preferred Reporting Items for Systematic Reviews and Meta-Analyses (PRISMA) guidelines and searched databases like PubMed, Wiley Online Library, and Cochrane Reviews. Cohort and cross-sectional studies in English language assessing obesity among menopausal women were included. The methodological quality was assessed using Joanna Briggs Checklist for critical appraisal. Risk of Bias (RoB) was generated using Review Manager 5.4.1 (RevMan). Identified predictors were assessed for overall quality of evidence using adopted Grading of Recommendations Assessment, Development and Evaluation (GRADE) approach. RESULTS This review encompassed 42 studies, (21 cross-sectional and 21 cohort) with sample ranging from 164 to 107,243 across studies. Higher parity( ≥ 3 children) emerged as a strong predictor of obesity across seven studies, with good-quality evidence. Lower physical activity was another predictor, supported by eight studies with good-quality evidence. Sociodemographic factors like lower education(<8 years or < than college degree), socioeconomic background, menopausal transition, and older age at menarche showed associations with weight gain, with moderate-quality evidence. Lifestyle factors (high-fat consumption, sedentariness, active smoking status, and psychological difficulties) also showed moderate-quality evidence. CONCLUSION This review underscores the multifaceted factors associated with obesity during the perimenopausal transition. Identifying these factors will be helpful in prevention and management of obesity among these women.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Several studies have found that individuals with a partner were less physically active than those without. To better understand the reasons for this association, we examine whether the existence of a relationship or the current presence of a partner influences physical activity (PA). METHODS We use data from the most recent German Time Use Survey 2012/13 to examine leisure-time PA. All leisure-time activities reported in the time diaries are classified according to their metabolic equivalent of task (MET) to calculate the mean MET scores. First, we use ordinary least square regressions and logistic regressions to examine the effects of living together with a partner or not on mean daily MET scores and on exercise. Second, we apply person-day fixed effects models to estimate the impact of current partner presence on current PA levels. RESULTS Having a partner is negatively associated with exercising but is not correlated with mean leisure-time MET scores for both women and men. For those with a partner, current MET levels are substantially lower when the partner is present than when the partner is absent. When partners spend leisure-time activities apart, their MET levels are higher than those of individuals without a partner. CONCLUSIONS The results suggest that it is not the mere existence of a romantic relationship but the current copresence with a partner that affects PA behavior. Therefore, interventions to increase PA may be promising if they can encourage couples to be active together.

Abstract
OBJECTIVE We examined longitudinal associations of air pollution exposure, including fine particulate matter (PM2.5), nitrogen dioxide (NO2), and ozone (O3), with weight, BMI, waist circumference, fat mass, lean mass, and proportion fat mass in midlife women. RESEARCH DESIGN AND METHODS The study population included 1,654 White, Black, Chinese, and Japanese women from the Study of Women's Health Across the Nation, with the baseline median age of 49.6 years, followed from 2000 to 2008. Annual air pollution exposures were assigned by linking residential addresses with hybrid estimates of air pollutant concentrations at 1-km2 resolution. Body size was measured, and body composition was measured using DXA at approximately annual visits. Linear mixed effects models were used to examine the associations between air pollution and body size and composition measures and whether these associations differed by physical activity. RESULTS After adjusting for potential confounders, an interquartile range increase in PM2.5 concentration (4.5 μg/m3) was associated with 4.53% (95% CI 3.85%, 5.22%) higher fat mass, 1.10% (95% CI 0.95%, 1.25%) higher proportion fat mass, and 0.39% (95% CI -0.77%, -0.01%) lower lean mass. Similar associations were also observed for NO2 and O3. Weaker associations of PM2.5 and NO2 with body composition were observed in participants who engaged in more physical activity. CONCLUSIONS Our analyses provide evidence that exposure to PM2.5, NO2, and O3, is adversely associated with body composition, including higher fat mass, higher proportional fat mass, and lower lean mass, highlighting their potential contribution to obesity.

Abstract
PURPOSE The relation of premenopausal anti-Müllerian hormone (AMH) levels with breast cancer risk has been evaluated in a few studies, but primarily in non-Hispanic White women. METHODS We evaluated the association of AMH levels with breast cancer risk in Study of Women's Health Across the Nation (SWAN), a multi-ethnic cohort of women. At enrollment, participants had an intact uterus and ≥ 1 ovary, and ≥ 1 menstrual period in the last 3 months. AMH at first measurement was assessed in 1,529 pre- or perimenopausal women using a high-sensitivity ELISA assay; values were natural log transformed. Breast cancer diagnoses were assessed at enrollment and subsequent follow-up visits through 2018 (median 6.1 years). RESULTS In total, 84 women reported an incident breast cancer diagnosis. In multivariable Cox regression models adjusting for age, race and ethnicity, body mass index, and other factors, higher AMH levels were associated with a non-significant increased breast cancer risk. Compared to women in the 1st quartile, the hazard ratio (95% confidence interval) for women in the 4th quartile was 1.77 (0.87-3.60). CONCLUSION Our results did not suggest a significant association between AMH and breast cancer risk; however, estimates were consistent with prior studies that reported positive associations.

Abstract
Exposure to metals may contribute to the development of metabolic syndrome (MetS); however, evidence from midlife women who are at greater risk of cardiometabolic disease is limited. We assessed the associations of 15 urinary metal concentrations with incident MetS in a prospective cohort of midlife women in the United States. The study population included 947 White, Black, Chinese and Japanese women, aged 45-56 years, free of MetS at baseline (1999-2000), who participated in the Study of Women's Health Across the Nation Multi-Pollutant Study. Fifteen metals were detected in almost all participants urine samples using inductively coupled plasma mass spectrometry at the baseline. Incident MetS was identified annually through 2017 as having at least three of the following five components: high blood pressure, impaired fasting glucose, abdominal obesity, high triglycerides, and poor high-density lipoprotein cholesterol. We used the Cox proportional hazards models to investigate the associations between individual metals and MetS incidence. The adjusted hazard ratios (HR) (95% CI) for MetS in associations with each doubling of urinary metal concentration were 1.14 (1.08, 1.23) for arsenic, 1.14 (1.01, 1.29) for cobalt, and 1.20 (1.06, 1.37) for zinc. We further evaluated the associations between metal mixtures and MetS using the elastic net penalized Cox model and summarized the results into the environmental risk score (ERS). Arsenic, barium, cobalt, copper, nickel, antimony, thallium, and zinc had positive weights, and cadmium, cesium, mercury, molybdenum, lead, and tin had negative weights in the construction of the ERS. The adjusted HR of MetS comparing 75th vs. 25th percentiles of the ERS was 1.45 (1.13, 1.87). These findings support the view that arsenic, cobalt, zinc, as well as metal mixtures, might influence the risks of incident MetS in midlife women.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Exposure to metals and metal mixtures may influence ovarian aging. However, epidemiologic evidence of their potential impact is lacking. OBJECTIVE We prospectively examined the associations of 15 urinary metal concentrations and their mixtures with natural menopause in the Study of Women's Health Across the Nation Multi-Pollutant Study. METHODS The study population consisted of 1082 premenopausal women from multiple racial/ethnic groups, aged 45-56 years at baseline (1999-2000), with the median follow-up of 4.1 years. Urinary concentrations of 15 metals, including arsenic, barium, cadmium, cobalt, cesium, copper, mercury, manganese, molybdenum, nickel, lead, antimony, tin, thallium, and zinc, were measured at baseline. Natural menopause was defined as the final bleeding episode prior to at least 12 months of amenorrhea, not due to surgery or hormone therapy. Cox proportional hazards models were used to examine associations between individual metal concentrations and timing of natural menopause. The associations between metal mixtures and natural menopause were evaluated using elastic net penalized Cox regression, and an environmental risk score (ERS) was computed to represent individual risks of natural menopause related to metal mixtures. RESULTS The median age at natural menopause was 53.2 years. Using the Cox proportional hazards models, the adjusted hazard ratio (HR) (and its 95% confidence interval (CI)) for natural menopause was 1.32 (1.03, 1.67) for arsenic and 1.36 (1.05, 1.76) for lead, comparing the highest with the lowest quartiles of metal concentrations. The predicted ages at natural menopause in the highest and lowest quartiles were 52.7 and 53.5 years for arsenic; and 52.9 and 53.8 years for lead. A significant association between ERS and menopause was also observed. Women in the highest vs. the lowest quartiles of ERS had an HR of 1.71 (1.36, 2.15), equivalent to a 1.6 year earlier median time to natural menopause. CONCLUSION This study suggests that arsenic, lead, and metal mixtures are associated with earlier natural menopause, a risk factor for adverse health outcomes in later life.

Abstract
Purpose We examined if childhood socioeconomic status (SES) was related to adult leucocyte telomere length (TL) using the data of 361 African American (AA) participants from the GENE-FORECAST Study. We also assessed the mediating role of behavioral and psychosocial factors in the association between childhood SES and adult TL. Methods Childhood SES was assessed individually by using participant’s mother’s education and occupation, father’s education and occupation, parental home ownership, and family structure. TL was assessed using the quantitative polymerase chain reaction method. Information on potential confounders and mediators were collected. The associations of childhood SES with TL were assessed using multivariable linear regression models. We used path analysis to quantify and test the share of these associations that was statistically explained by each of the mediators (participant’s educational attainment, smoking status, physical activity, dietary habit, perceived stress, and depressive symptoms). Results Mother’s education was associated with longer average TL (β: 0.021; 95% CI: 0.001, 0.04, p=0.038) in confounder adjusted models. Once mediators were introduced in the model, the estimates were reduced and remained marginally significant (β: 0.017; 95% CI: −0.003, 0.038, p=0.061). According to path model, approximately 19% of the effect of mother’s education on TL (β: 0.004; 95% CI: −0.001, 0.01, p < 0.10) was mediated through participant’s own education level. No significant mediation effect was observed for any other mediators. Conclusions These data provide evidence that participant’s mother’s education was positively linked to adult TL in AA population. Abstract
BACKGROUND Information on the associations between metal exposures and adipokines in human populations is limited and results are inconsistent. We evaluated the associations between metals and adipokines. METHODS Urinary concentrations of 15 metals (arsenic, barium, cadmium, cobalt, cesium, copper, mercury, manganese, molybdenum, nickel, lead, antimony, tin, thallium, and zinc) were measured in 1999-2000 among 1228 women of the Study of Women's Health Across the Nation Multi-Pollutant Study. Serum adipokines including high molecular weight (HMW)-adiponectin, leptin, and soluble leptin receptor (sOB-R) were measured at the follow-up visit (2002-2003). Linear regression models with adaptive elastic-net (AENET) were fit to identify metals associated with adipokines and to compute estimated percent changes in adipokines for one standard deviation increase in log-transformed urinary metal concentrations. RESULTS After adjustment for confounders, urinary molybdenum was associated with a 5.54% higher level (95% CI: 1.36%, 9.90%), whereas cadmium was associated with a 4.53% lower level (95% CI: -8.17%, -0.76%) of HMW-adiponectin. Urinary molybdenum was also associated with a 5.95% lower leptin level (95% CI: -10.15%, -1.56%) and a 2.98% (95% CI: 0.69%, 5.32%) higher sOB-R level. Urinary cesium and lead were associated with a 3.58% (95% CI: -6.06%, -1.03%) and a 2.53% (95% CI: -4.80%, -0.21%) lower level of sOB-R, respectively. CONCLUSIONS Our findings suggest that molybdenum was associated with favorable profiles of HMW-adiponectin, leptin, and sOB-R. Exposures to cadmium, cesium, and lead were associated with adverse adipokine profiles.

Abstract
Background To assess physical activity (PA), a comparative measurement – evaluating one’s own PA compared to others – may be an appropriate method. In previous studies, the use of comparative measurements led to an effect known as unrealistic comparative optimism (UCO) – people being unrealistically optimistic about their behavior. Our aim was to use this comparative measurement in university students to quantify the prevalence of UCO at the group level and to draw conclusions on its validity. Methods We used data from the Nutrition and Physical Activity in Adolescence Study (NuPhA), a cross-sectional online survey that included only self-reports (n = 689). To assess PA among students, they were asked to rate their PA level compared to that of their same-aged fellow students. In addition, we used the Godin-Shephard leisure-time PA questionnaire and other questions on PA for comparisons. We used bivariate and cluster-based analyses to identify potential UCO. Results We found that UCO at the group level led to an uneven distribution, with a higher proportion of students who rated themselves as being more physically active than average. However, the individual assessment of PA with a single and simple comparative question seemed to be valid. Discussion A global single comparative question seems useful for studies where PA is measured as a covariate in university students. Abstract
BACKGROUND Epidemiologic studies on associations between metals and insulin resistance and β-cell dysfunction have been cross-sectional and focused on individual metals. OBJECTIVE We assessed the association of exposure to metal mixtures, based on assessment of 15 urinary metals, with both baseline levels and longitudinal changes in homeostatic model assessments for insulin resistance (HOMA-IR) and β-cell function (HOMA-β). METHODS We examined 1262 women, aged 45-56 years at baseline (1999-2000), who were followed through 2015-2016, from the Study of Women's Health Across the Nation. Urinary concentrations of 15 metals (arsenic, barium, cadmium, cobalt, cesium, copper, mercury, manganese, molybdenum, nickel, lead, antimony, tin, thallium, and zinc) were determined at baseline. HOMA-IR and HOMA-β were repeatedly measured over 16 years of follow-up. A two-stage modeling was used to account for correlations in dependent and independent variables: In stage-1, linear mixed effects models were used to estimate the participant-specific baseline HOMA levels from random intercepts and participant-specific rates of changes from random slopes. In stage-2, adaptive elastic-net (AENET) models were fit to identify components of metal mixtures associated with participant-specific baseline levels and rates of changes in HOMA-IR and HOMA-β, respectively. An environmental risk score (ERS) was used to integrate metal mixture effects from AENET results. RESULTS In multivariable adjusted AENET models, urinary zinc was associated with higher HOMA-IR at baseline, whereas molybdenum was associated with lower HOMA-IR at baseline. The estimated changes in baseline HOMA-IR for one standard deviation increase in log-transformed urinary metal concentrations were 5.76% (3.05%, 8.55%) for zinc and -3.25% (-5.45%, -1.00%) for molybdenum, respectively. Urinary zinc was also associated with lower HOMA- β at baseline. Arsenic was associated with a slightly faster rate of decline in HOMA-β in the AENET model evaluating associations between metals and rate of changes. Significant associations of ERS with both HOMA-IR and HOMA-β at baseline were observed. ERS for the rate of changes was not calculated and examined in relation to rates of changes in HOMA-IR and HOMA-β because only a single metal was selected by AENET. CONCLUSION Exposure to metal mixtures may be exerting effects on insulin resistance and β-cell dysfunction, which might be mechanisms by which metal exposures lead to elevated diabetes risks.

Abstract
INTRODUCTION Environmental exposure to metals may play a role in the pathogenesis of diabetes; however, evidence from human studies is limited. We prospectively evaluated the associations of 20 urinary metal concentrations and their mixtures with incident diabetes in the Study of Women's Health Across the Nation, a multisite, multiethnic cohort study of midlife women. RESEARCH DESIGN AND METHODS The sample included 1237 white, black, Chinese and Japanese-American women, aged 45-56 years, free of diabetes at baseline (1999-2000) who were followed through 2016. Concentrations of 20 metals (arsenic, barium, beryllium, cadmium, cobalt, chromium, cesium, copper, mercury, manganese, molybdenum, nickel, lead, antimony, tin, thallium, uranium, vanadium, tungsten and zinc) were measured in urine specimens at baseline. Incident diabetes was identified annually by fasting glucose ≥126 mg/dL, self-reported doctor-diagnosed diabetes, or self-reported use of antidiabetic medications. A non-parametric clustering method, k-means clustering, was used to identify subgroups with different exposure patterns to metal mixtures. RESULTS After multivariable adjustment, the HR (95% CI) for diabetes associated with each doubling increase in urinary metal concentrations was 1.19 (1.10 to 1.30) for arsenic and 1.20 (1.05 to 1.37) for lead, in Cox proportional hazards models after controlling for multiple comparisons. A doubling in urinary excretion of zinc was associated with higher risk of diabetes (adjusted HR 1.31, 95% CI 1.11 to 1.53). Two distinct exposure patterns to metal mixtures-'high' versus 'low'-were identified. Participants assigned to the 'high' pattern had higher overall concentrations of all metals compared with those classified into the 'low' pattern. Adjusted HR for diabetes associated with 'high' pattern compared with 'low' was 1.42 (1.08 to 1.87). CONCLUSIONS Higher urinary concentrations of arsenic and lead, increased urinary excretion of zinc, as well as higher overall exposure to metal mixtures were associated with elevated risk of diabetes. Future studies should further investigate the underlying mechanisms.

Abstract
Nurses have a high prevalence of musculoskeletal symptoms from patient handling tasks such as lifting, transferring, and repositioning. Comorbidities such as musculoskeletal symptoms may negatively affect engagement in leisure-time physical activity (LTPA). However, limited data are available on the relationship between musculoskeletal symptoms and LTPA among nurses. The purpose of this study was to describe musculoskeletal symptoms and LTPA, and to examine the relationships of musculoskeletal symptoms, sociodemographics, and body mass index with LTPA among nurses. Cross-sectional data on sociodemographics, employment characteristics, musculoskeletal symptoms, body mass index, and LTPA were collected from a statewide random sample of 454 California nurses from January to July 2013. Descriptive statistics, bivariate and multiple logistic regressions were performed. We observed that non-White nurses were less likely to engage in regular aerobic physical activity than White nurses (odds ratio [OR] = 0.61; 95% confidence interval [CI] = [0.40, 0.94]). Currently working nurses were less likely to engage in regular aerobic physical activity than their counterparts (OR = 0.48; 95% CI = [0.25, 0.91]). Nurses with higher body mass index were less likely to perform regular aerobic physical activity (OR = 0.93; 95% CI = [0.89, 0.97]) or muscle-strengthening physical activity (OR = 0.92; 95% CI = [0.88, 0.96]). This study found no evidence that musculoskeletal symptoms may interfere with regular engagement in LTPA. Physical activity promotion interventions should address employment-related barriers, and particularly target racial minority nurses and those who have a high body mass index.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Modifying lifestyle factors such as diet and exercise can reduce the risk of cancer. Psychological stress (PS) might be indirectly associated with cancer because it alters lifestyle factors. However, the relationship among these variables has not been fully investigated. Thus, we examined interactions between self-reported PS (SRPS) and habitual exercise on diet. MATERIALS AND METHODS In all, 5,587 men and 2,718 women were divided into "exerciser" and "non-exerciser" groups, based on whether they exercised regularly, and classified into three SRPS levels: low, moderate and high. Diet was estimated using a validated food frequency questionnaire. Using a general linear model, food and nutrient consumption was estimated for each SRPS level in the 2 exercise groups, and the interactions between SRPS levels and exercise were calculated. RESULTS In women, the intake of pork and beef, low fat milk and yogurt, natto (fermented soybean), carrots and squash, other root vegetables, mushrooms, seaweeds, and wine, along with the nutrients vegetable protein, soluble, insoluble and total dietary fiber, daidzein, genistein, carotene, retinol equivalents, vitamin B2, pantothenic acid, potassium, calcium, magnesium, phosphorus and iron demonstrated significant interaction with SRPS and habitual exercise (p for interaction <0.05). In men, raw and green leafy vegetables and fruit and vegetable juice significantly interacted with SRPS and habitual exercise (p for interaction <0.05). CONCLUSIONS We suggest that certain foods and nutrients, which are thought to have a protective effect against cancer, interact with SRPS and habitual exercise, especially in women. This information is valuable for understanding and improving interventions for cancer prevention.

Abstract
Despite the many physical and psychological benefits of physical activity, it is well documented that the general population does not engage in sufficient leisure time physical activity to accrue such benefits. In the Latino population the situation is even more dire. This review focuses on studies of the relationship between physical activity and psychosocial correlates and outcomes in Latino men and women. It was demonstrated that the majority of studies with Latino participants examined constructs similar to those studied in the general population, namely, self-efficacy, social support, and perceived barriers. The existing literature is discussed in terms of (a) the lack of information on the psychological/psychosocial constructs of physical activity for Latinos, (b) the lack of intervention research, (c) reporting results of studies as “minority correlates,” (d) the importance of Latino subcultures and the heterogeneity of Latinos, and (e) the measurement of physical activity.

Abstract
Culturally and linguistically diverse (CALD) migrants face significant health risks as they adapt to new cultures. These risks are exacerbated by their limited participation in preventative behaviours such as sports and physical activity. The review aimed to identify studies that examined the correlates of sport and physical activity participation in migrants. The systematic review identified 72 papers, including 6 interventions, 18 qualitative and 48 quantitative studies. The 44 identified correlates highlight the complexities involved in working with migrants. The correlates were grouped in four themes using the social ecological model; acculturation, demographic, psychosocial and environmental/organisational. The social ecological model identified general correlates such as social support and safety. However, there were unique correlates relating to individuals who are facing cultural changes such as acculturation and language. Overall, there is a lack of contextualisation of CALD migrants' sport and physical activity experiences because many studies fail to consider acculturation comprehensively.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Psychological stress and physical activity (PA) are believed to be reciprocally related; however, most research examining the relationship between these constructs is devoted to the study of exercise and/or PA as an instrument to mitigate distress. OBJECTIVE The aim of this paper was to review the literature investigating the influence of stress on indicators of PA and exercise. METHODS A systematic search of Web of Science, PubMed, and SPORTDiscus was employed to find all relevant studies focusing on human participants. Search terms included "stress", "exercise", and "physical activity". A rating scale (0-9) modified for this study was utilized to assess the quality of all studies with multiple time points. RESULTS The literature search found 168 studies that examined the influence of stress on PA. Studies varied widely in their theoretical orientation and included perceived stress, distress, life events, job strain, role strain, and work-family conflict but not lifetime cumulative adversity. To more clearly address the question, prospective studies (n = 55) were considered for further review, the majority of which indicated that psychological stress predicts less PA (behavioral inhibition) and/or exercise or more sedentary behavior (76.4 %). Both objective (i.e., life events) and subjective (i.e., distress) measures of stress related to reduced PA. Prospective studies investigating the effects of objective markers of stress nearly all agreed (six of seven studies) that stress has a negative effect on PA. This was true for research examining (a) PA at periods of objectively varying levels of stress (i.e., final examinations vs. a control time point) and (b) chronically stressed populations (e.g., caregivers, parents of children with a cancer diagnosis) that were less likely to be active than controls over time. Studies examining older adults (>50 years), cohorts with both men and women, and larger sample sizes (n > 100) were more likely to show an inverse association. 85.7 % of higher-quality prospective research (≥ 7 on a 9-point scale) showed the same trend. Interestingly, some prospective studies (18.2 %) report evidence that PA was positively impacted by stress (behavioral activation). This should not be surprising as some individuals utilize exercise to cope with stress. Several other factors may moderate stress and PA relationships, such as stages of change for exercise. Habitually active individuals exercise more in the face of stress, and those in beginning stages exercise less. Consequently, stress may have a differential impact on exercise adoption, maintenance, and relapse. Preliminary evidence suggests that combining stress management programming with exercise interventions may allay stress-related reductions in PA, though rigorous testing of these techniques has yet to be produced. CONCLUSIONS Overall, the majority of the literature finds that the experience of stress impairs efforts to be physically active. Future work should center on the development of a theory explaining the mechanisms underlying the multifarious influences of stress on PA behaviors.

Abstract
Despite the increasing number of non-marital romantic relationships in developed countries, little is known about their effects on health-related behaviors. This paper examined the impact of relationship status (single, dating, cohabiting or married) on physical activity. Three possible mechanisms underlying this association were discussed: social control and support by the partner, time restrictions and the release from the marriage market. Data were obtained from the German Socio-Economic Panel (GSOEP), a random sample of individuals living in private households in Germany. Both random-effects and fixed-effects logit models were estimated. The random-effects analyses referred to 30,201 individuals and the fixed-effects analyses referred to 11,568 individuals who were observed for up to 19 years. After adjusting for age, measurement period and the presence of children, fixed-effects estimates showed reduced physical activity for each type of relationship for both men and women. The effects were strongest for married couples and weakest for dating couples, and remained similar after controlling for discretionary time. However, the effects found partly depended on age: for men, the negative impacts of cohabitation and marriage on physical activity became weaker with increasing age and shifted to positive impacts. For women, the negative effect of marriage on physical activity also decreased but stayed negative into old age. The results suggest that the release from the marriage market may cause the negative effects of relationships on physical activity. Social support and social control may play a role in older age, whereas the amount of discretionary time seems to be of minor importance for explaining relationship effects on physical activity. If the results will be validated by other studies there will be valuable implications for health promotion programs.

Abstract
The benefits of regular physical activity are well established, but evidence for a protective effect against the adverse health consequences accompanying the menopausal transition is limited. This article reviews that evidence, concluding that more physical activity is generally associated with fewer somatic and mood symptoms. Physical activity seems to minimize weight gain and changes in body composition and fat distribution experienced at midlife and might attenuate the rapid bone density loss that occurs. Given these benefits, clinicians treating perimenopausal women should encourage their patients to follow guidelines for physical activity (≥150 minutes a week of moderate-intensity activity).

Abstract
BACKGROUND Physical inactivity and poor mental wellbeing are associated with poorer prognoses in patients with cardiovascular disease. We aimed to analyse the cross-sectional and prospective associations between physical activity and mental wellbeing in patients with a history of myocardial infarction. DESIGN Longitudinal, observational study. METHODS We investigated 600 older subjects with a history of myocardial infarction (age range 60-80 years) who participated in the Alpha Omega Trial (AOT). They were tested twice at baseline and at 40 months follow-up for physical activity - with the Physical Activity Scale for the Elderly (PASE); depressive symptoms - with the Geriatric Depression Scale (GDS-15); and dispositional optimism - with the Life Orientation Test (LOT-R). Linear (multilevel) and logistic regression analyses were used to examine cross-sectional and longitudinal associations. RESULTS Physical activity was cross-sectionally associated with depressive symptoms (adjusted beta = -0.143; p = 0.001), but not with dispositional optimism (adjusted beta = 0.074; p = 0.07). We found a synchrony of change between physical activity and depressive symptoms (adjusted beta = -0.155; p < 0.001), but not with dispositional optimism (adjusted beta = 0.049; p = 0.24). Baseline physical activity did not predict depressive symptoms at 40 months follow-up. CONCLUSIONS Concordant inverse associations were observed for (changes) in physical activity and depressive symptoms. Physical activity did not predict depressive symptoms or low optimism.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Accurate measurement of physical activity (PA) is critical to establish dose-response relationships with various health outcomes. We compared the self-administered PA questionnaire from the Norwegian Women and Cancer Study (NOWAC) with a criterion method in middle-aged Norwegian women. METHODS A sample of 177 randomly recruited healthy women attended two clinical visits approximately 4-6 months apart. At each visit, the women completed the NOWAC PA questionnaire (NOPAQ), rating their overall PA level on a 10-category scale (1 being a "very low" and 10 being a "very high" PA level) and performed an 8-minute step-test to estimate aerobic fitness (VO2max). After each visit, the women wore a combined heart rate and movement sensor for 4 consecutive days of free-living. Measures of PA obtained from the combined heart rate and movement sensor, which were used as criterion, included individually calibrated PA energy expenditure (PAEE), acceleration, and hours/day of moderate-to-vigorous intensity PA (MVPA). These were averaged between visits and compared to NOPAQ scores at visit 2. RESULTS Intra-class correlation coefficients for objective measures from both free-living periods were in the range of 0.65-0.87 (P < 0.001), compared to 0.62 (P < 0.001) for NOPAQ. There was a moderate but significant (P < 0.001) Spearman's rank correlation coefficient in the range of 0.36-0.46 between NOPAQ and objective measures of PA. Linear trends for the association between the NOPAQ rating scale with PAEE, hours/day of MVPA and VO2max (P < 0.001) were also demonstrated. CONCLUSIONS Self-reported PA level measured on a 10-category scale appears valid to rank PA in a female Norwegian population.

Abstract
OBJECTIVE(S) The aim of this research review was to portray the correlates of lifestyle physical activity (PA) behavior of healthy South Asian Indian (SAI) immigrants comprehensively by identifying, synthesizing, and critically analyzing the existing research literature. DESIGN AND SAMPLE An integrative review methodology was used. The sample included 11 cross-sectional and 4 qualitative studies. MEASURES The physical activity framework for SAI immigrants guided the development of data collection tools that included study measures of PA and background (current health, acculturation, discrimination, social support, environmental) and intrapersonal (motivation) correlates of PA. RESULTS Regardless of the PA measure used, all studies reported low PA levels in at least 40% of the participants. The correlates of PA most often studied were sociodemographic variables, current health, and acculturation; female sex; poorer health; and less time since immigration. Few studies focused on social support, environmental factors, or included dynamic motivational factors. CONCLUSIONS Increased knowledge of the factors that impact lifestyle PA is needed so that public health nurses can develop targeted interventions to increase the lifestyle PA of SAI immigrants at risk for cardiovascular disease, diabetes, and central obesity.

Abstract
The aim of this study was to estimate physical activity energy expenditure among older adults. The study comprised 1,585 residents in Bambuí, Minas Gerais State, Brazil, aged > 60 years (91% of the town's total elderly), and examined the frequency and duration of 23 types of physical activity among them. Median energy expenditure was 975 MET.min/week (1,195.8 among men and 803.1 among women), declining significantly with age in both sexes. The prevalence of sedentary lifestyles (< 450 MET.min/week) was 31.2%. Unhurried walking accounted for about 1/3 of total energy expenditure. Multivariate analysis based on ordinal logistic regression showed inverse associations between energy expenditure and age and hospitalizations in both sexes. Among men, inverse associations were observed with smoking, number of chronic diseases and number of medical appointments. These results emphasize the need for effective strategies to increase physical activity in older elderly, and underscore the high prevalence of walking in this group.

Abstract
Background Physical activity self-report instruments in the US have largely been developed for and validated in White samples. Despite calls to validate existing instruments in more diverse samples, relatively few instruments have been validated in US Blacks. Emerging evidence suggests that these instruments may have differential validity in Black populations. Purpose This report reviews and evaluates the validity and reliability of self-reported measures of physical activity in Blacks and makes recommendations for future directions. Methods A systematic literature review was conducted to identify published reports with construct or criterion validity evaluated in samples that included Blacks. Studies that reported results separately for Blacks were examined. Results The review identified 10 instruments validated in nine manuscripts. Criterion validity correlations tended to be low to moderate. No study has compared the validity of multiple instruments in a single sample of Blacks. Conclusion There is a need for efforts validating self-report physical activity instruments in Blacks, particularly those evaluating the relative validity of instruments in a single sample.

Abstract
AIM This paper is a report of a study of factors associated with ethnic differences in exercise and leisure time physical activity levels among midlife women. BACKGROUND Most studies on physical activity have focused mostly on identifying correlates of physical activity. However, 'ethnicity/race' as a factor affecting exercise and leisure time physical activity has rarely been considered. METHOD This study was a secondary analysis of data from a larger Internet study on menopausal symptoms of midlife women from four ethnic groups in the United States of America. A total of 441 women aged 40-60 years were recruited through the Internet from 31 January 2005 to 31 December 2007. The data were analysed using descriptive statistics, chi-square analysis, analysis of variance and multiple regressions. FINDINGS Non-Hispanic White people had a statistically significantly higher level of leisure time physical activity than Asian Americans and Hispanics. African Americans reported the lowest level of exercise. Body mass index was inversely associated with exercise among African Americans. Menopausal symptoms were positively associated with exercise among non-Hispanic White people and African Americans. Employment and number of children had a statistically significantly inverse association with exercise among Asian Americans. CONCLUSION Correlates of exercise are ethnic-specific. The dual role situation of working outside and inside their homes is an important factor in explaining the lower participation of exercise among Asian Americans. Health factors influence exercise participation in non-Hispanic White people, African Americans and Hispanics. Nurses should take into account ethnic diversities when designing physical activity interventions for women.

Abstract
Background We investigated the criterion validity of a physical activity index (PAI) derived from socio-demographic variables obtained from convenience samples of rural African women. Methods We used a sample (N = 206) from a larger dataset which surveyed adult rural Africans during 1997, and data collected during 2003/4 from 138 adult rural African women. A three-point PAI (low-, medium- and high-subsistence) was constructed from four socio-demographic questions related to electricity, cooking methods, water collection and availability of motorized transport. Criterion measures included measures of adiposity, blood biochemistry, resting blood pressure (RBP), physical fitness (VO2max) and single-plane accelerometry (ACC). Results Age, educational level and health status were not related to PAI level (p > 0.1). There was a significant negative, linear trend between the PAI level and adiposity level (p < 0.04), and fasting blood glucose concentration (p < 0.0001), while VO2max was positively related to PAI level (p = 0.0190). The PAI level was positively and linearly related to ACC output, namely counts.day-1 (p = 0.0044), steps.day-1 (p = 0.0265), min.day-1 of moderate-to-vigorous activity (p = 0.0040), and the percentage of subjects adhering to physical activity public health guidelines (p = 0.0157). Other criterion measures did not reach significance, but were in the expected direction (sedentary behaviour: p > 0.08, RBP: p > 0.07). Conclusion The PAI derived from a socio-demographic questionnaire is a valid instrument for broadly categorizing levels of physical activity for this specific population of rural African women. As the epidemiological transition progresses, validity will need to be re-established.

Abstract
This study examined the effect of health worry (i.e., cognitive aspect of anxiety resulting from concern for health) on walking difficulty in a nationally representative sample (N = 7,527) of older adults (M age = 76.83 years). The study further tested whether physical activity mediates the effect of health worry on walking difficulty in a 6-year follow-up design. Results of a mediation analysis using structural equation modeling showed that people with a high degree of health worry engaged in less physical activity (beta = -.24, p < .001), and people who participated in less physical activity were more likely to report walking difficulty at the 6-year follow-up (beta = -.22, p < .001). There was a significant indirect effect from health worry to walking difficulty through physical activity (beta = .05, p < .001), controlling for demographic, psychosocial, and health related factors. Results suggested that inducing threat and worry may not be effective for physical activity promotion in the older population. More promising coping and regulation strategies are discussed.

Abstract
PURPOSE To determine whether respondents share researchers' understandings of concepts and questions frequently used in the assessment of usual physical activity (PA) behavior. METHODS As part of On the Move, a study aimed at reducing measurement error in self-reported physical activity (PA), we conducted cognitive interviews with 19 men and 21 women, ages 45-65, regarding their responses to the PA questionnaires used in two large, population-based studies, Life After Cancer Epidemiology and California Men's Health study. One questionnaire asks about the frequency, the duration, and the perceived intensity of a range of specific activities in several different domains over the past 12 months. The second questionnaire asks about frequency and duration of specific, mostly recreational activities, grouped by intensity (i.e., moderate or vigorous) over the past 3 months. We used verbal probing techniques to allow respondents to describe their thought processes as they completed the questionnaires. All interviews were tape-recorded and transcribed, and the transcripts were then analyzed using standard qualitative methods. RESULTS Cognitive interviews demonstrated that a sizable number of respondents understood "intensity" in terms of emotional or psychological intensity rather than physical effort. As a result, the perceived intensity with which a participant reported doing a specific activity often bore little relationship to the MET value of that activity. Additionally, participants often counted the same activity more than once, overestimated work-related PA, and understood activities that were grouped together in a single category to be definitive lists rather than examples. CONCLUSION Cognitive interviews revealed significant gaps between respondents' interpretations of some PA questions and researchers' assumptions about what those questions were intended to measure. Some sources of measurement error in self-reported PA may be minimized by additional research that focuses on the cognitive processes required to respond to PA questionnaires.

Abstract
OBJECTIVE The purpose of this study was to address (1) the existence of an association between menopausal status and the health-related quality of life (HRQOL) in Australian and Japanese women and (2) the relative contributions of menopausal status, modifiable lifestyle risk factors, health, and sociodemographic factors on HRQOL. DESIGN The Australian and Japanese Midlife Women's Health Study (AJMWHS) was a multisite, population-based study conducted in 2001 to 2002. Measures were conducted on data collected from a survey questionnaire used for a sample of women from Australia and Japan. HRQOL was assessed with seven subscales from the Short Form-36. RESULTS The differences seen in physical functioning, general health, and vitality are significant. The results support an effect of country of residence on physical functioning and general health. The impact of menopausal status on HRQOL was significantly associated with bodily pain and role-emotional. The country of residence did have a modifying effect on the relationship between menopausal status and physical functioning. After control for confounders, there was a significant difference between Australian and Japanese women for HRQOL. Menopausal status was not associated with HRQOL in the areas of general health and physical functioning. Modifiable lifestyle risk factors contributed more highly to HRQOL for the Australian women than for the Japanese women. If the women had a lowered body mass index, undertook physical activity, consumed dietary phytoestrogens, and used alcohol, their physical functioning seemed to be better. Differences were seen in the contributions to HRQOL in these areas, with lower body mass index in the Australian women and physical activity in the Japanese women being the highest predictors. Somatic and psychological symptoms seem to negatively affect both Japanese and Australian women's physical functioning, contributing more than sociodemographic factors, menopausal status, and behavioral determinants combined to general health and physical functioning. CONCLUSIONS It is important that that consideration be given to incorporating the same tool within the cross-cultural design of studies so that comparisons between cultures and patterns of healthy aging can be made. The research suggests that there seems to be variations across Australian and Japanese midlife women in some areas of HRQOL and some factors that contribute to these areas.

Abstract
Valid measurement of physical activity is important for studying the risks for morbidity and mortality. The purpose of this study was to examine evidence of construct validity of two similar single-response items assessing physical activity via self-report. Both items are based on the stages of change model. The sample was 687 participants (men = 504, women = 183) who completed an 8-response (PA8) or 5-response (PA5) single-response item about current level of physical activity. Responses were categorized as meeting or not meeting guidelines for sufficient physical activity to achieve a health benefit. Maximal cardiorespiratory fitness (CRF) and health markers were obtained during a clinical examination. Partial correlation, multivariate analysis of covariance, and logistic regression were used to identify the relations between self-reported physical activity, CRF, and health markers when controlling for gender and age. Single-response items were compared to a detailed measure of physical activity. Single-response items correlated significantly with CRF determined with a maximal exercise test on a treadmill (PA8 = .53; PA5 = .57). Differences in percentage of body fat and cholesterol were in the desired direction, with those self-reporting sufficient physical activity for a health benefit having the lower values. The single-response items demonstrated evidence of construct validity and may provide feasible, cost-effective, and efficient methods to assess physical activity in large-scale studies.

Abstract
Hispanic women are more likely to be sedentary than the general population. Increasing physical activity in this at-risk group is an important challenge in the prevention and management of coronary heart disease. This article reviews research conducted with Hispanic women in whom physical activity was the primary focus of study or the primary outcome of interest. Computer and manual searches were performed to identify articles published from 1990 to 2005. Factors that influence physical activity in Hispanic women include self-efficacy, having a concern for own and family health, social support and norms for physical activity, serving as a role model to others, and perceived neighborhood resources. Despite significant efforts to understand and promote physical activity among Hispanic women, much work remains to be done in this area. Future research should include attention to cultural, social, and contextual resources in understanding and promoting physical activity.

Abstract
OBJECTIVES In a cross-sectional study of 157 Turkish women attending outpatient clinics of a university hospital during April-May 2003, association between various subject characteristics and menopause timing was investigated. METHODS Characteristics were self-reported by women aged 45-60. Of the lifestyle factors, sun exposure, physical activity, food intake and dressing with headscarf were obtained as recalled average lifelong practices up to time of menopause. Cox proportional hazard modeling was used, censoring for hysterectomy, oopherectomy and HRT use. RESULTS Median age at natural menopause was 52 years. In multivariate analysis, earlier natural menopause was associated with low level of lifelong sun exposure (HR=6.381, 95% CI: 2.996-13.588, p< or =0.0001), heavy physical activity (HR=2.335, 95% CI: 1.305-4.177, p=0.0043), current calcium supplement use (HR=3.191, 95% CI: 1.361-7.485, p=0.0076), diagnosis of hypertension (HR=2.002, 95% CI: 1.186-3.378, p=0.0093), not owning a house (HR=3.002, 95% CI: 1.148-7.852, p=0.0250) and longer years on oral contraceptives (HR=1.085, 95% CI: 1.000-1.176, p=0.0487). Engagement in farming (HR=2.043, 95% CI: 1.056-3.952, p=0.0339), height (cm) (HR=0.953, 95% CI: 0.907-0.994, p=0.0279) and fish consumption (servings/week) (HR=0.600, 95% CI: 0.375-0.960, p=0.0331) were associated with age at menopause in univariate analysis only. For n=109 women who recalled whether maternal menopausal age was <50 or > or =50, sun exposure (HR=7.221, 95% CI: 2.971-17.547, p<0.0001) was a stronger predictor of age at natural menopause than maternal menopausal age (HR=2.882, 95% CI: 1.477-5.621, p=0.0019). CONCLUSIONS We identify some previously unrecognized correlates of age at natural menopause, namely self-reported lifelong sun exposure, lifelong physical activity, house-ownership, current use of calcium supplements, and lifelong fish consumption. These findings should be confirmed in larger studies.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Women who experience intimate partner violence (IPV) report greater stress and negative health consequences than nonabused women. Although an association between psychological stress and altered immune function has been shown, IPV studies have not investigated this relationship. OBJECTIVE This study explored the association of IPV with mental health symptoms and an immune marker to determine if posttraumatic stress disorder (PTSD) symptoms mediate the effect of IPV on pro-inflammatory (IFN-gamma) cytokine levels. METHODS A cross-sectional, comparative design was used to compare 62 women with IPV and 39 nonabused women. RESULTS Mean IFN-gamma values were higher in abused women and in women with current PTSD symptoms. There were no significant relationships with potential confounding variables that could provide an alternative explanation for the increase in production of proinflammatory cytokines. CONCLUSIONS PTSD symptoms mediate the association between IPV and IFN-gamma levels and may partially explain the association of mental health symptoms with physical health sequelae in IPV.

Abstract
Asian Indians have a greater prevalence and incidence of coronary artery disease than other ethnic groups, despite similar routine lipid profiles. High-density lipoprotein (HDL) cholesterol, particularly the large subclass, is predominantly associated with coronary artery disease protection. Exercise reduces coronary artery disease risk by improving HDL cholesterol levels. The effect of exercise on HDL cholesterol concentrations, subclasses, and size, measured by nuclear magnetic resonance spectroscopy, was assessed in 388 healthy Asian Indians. Exercise was associated with significantly greater concentrations of total HDL cholesterol, entirely due to significant increases in the cardioprotective large HDL subclass and larger HDL cholesterol particle sizes.

Abstract
The purpose of the present paper is to review recent research on the relationship of culture and menopausal symptoms and propose a biocultural framework that makes use of both biological and cultural parameters in future research. Medline was searched for English-language articles published from 2000 to 2004 using the keyword 'menopause' in the journals--Menopause, Maturitas, Climacteric, Social Science and Medicine, Medical Anthropology Quarterly, Journal of Women's Health, Journal of the American Medical Association, American Journal of Epidemiology, Lancet and British Medical Journal, excluding articles concerning small clinical samples, surgical menopause or HRT. Additionally, references of retrieved articles and reviews were hand-searched. Although a large number of studies and publications exist, methodological differences limit attempts at comparison or systematic review. We outline a theoretical framework in which relevant biological and cultural variables can be operationalized and measured, making it possible for rigorous comparisons in the future. Several studies carried out in Japan, North America and Australia, using similar methodology but different culture/ethnic groups, indicate that differences in symptom reporting are real and highlight the importance of biocultural research. We suggest that both biological variation and cultural differences contribute to the menopausal transition, and that more rigorous data collection is required to elucidate how biology and culture interact in female ageing.

Abstract
Research on ethnicity and socioeconomic status (SES) suggests that Hispanics are more likely than non-Hispanic Whites to experience poverty and low levels of education, which may relate to poorer health status. This study used a health survey to examine income, education, ethnicity, birthplace, and age on self-reported health factors of women age 60 and older on the U.S.-Mexico border. Results show that income, age, and education were significantly associated with several health factors (Physical Health, Emotional Health, General Health, Energy Level, and Activity Potential). Older women with lower SES, regardless of ethnicity, reported poorer health than younger-old women with higher SES.

Abstract
INTRODUCTION For obtaining reliable information about physical activity in epidemiological studies, validated and easy-to-use instruments are required. Therefore, a new simplified physical activity record based on 15-min recording intervals was developed and validated. SUBJECTS Nonobese volunteers (n = 31). MEASUREMENTS Physical activity was recorded over a 7-day period without detailed instructions. Energy expenditure was calculated (EE(sPAR)) and compared to energy expenditure measured by doubly labelled water technique (EE(DLW)). RESULTS A good agreement between EE(sPAR) (12.1+/-3.0) and EE(DLW) (11.7+/-3.3) with a mean difference of 0.33+/-1.55 MJ (r = 0.880, P < 0.001) was observed. The absolute difference between EE(sPAR) and EE(DLW) was < 10% in 65% of the subjects. The difference between EE(sPAR) and EE(DLW) was independent of gender, age, body weight, and body mass index. A weak positive association between the difference and total body fat was observed (r = 0.618, P < 0.001), suggesting a slight tendency to overestimate EE(sPAR) with increasing total body fat. CONCLUSION The new simplified physical activity protocol needs no detailed instructions, provides valid estimates of physical activity in nonobese free-living adults and can be used in epidemiological studies to assess total daily energy expenditure and physical activity level.

Abstract
The cultural and linguistic diversity of the U.S. population presents challenges to the design and implementation of population-based surveys that serve to inform public policies. Information derived from such surveys may be less than representative if groups with limited or no English language skills are not included. The California Health Interview Survey (CHIS), first administered in 2001, is a population-based health survey of more than 55,000 California households. This article describes the process that the designers of CHIS 2001 underwent in culturally adapting the survey and translating it into an unprecedented number of languages: Spanish, Chinese, Vietnamese, Korean, and Khmer. The multiethnic and multilingual CHIS 2001 illustrates the importance of cultural and linguistic adaptation in raising the quality of population-based surveys, especially when the populations they intend to represent are as diverse as California's.

Abstract
This paper examines whether menopausal status is associated with global quality of life (QOL) among women aged 40-55 and whether this association varies by race/ethnicity. We further examine the contributions of other health-related and psychosocial factors to QOL and whether these associations vary by racial/ethnic group. Analyses are based on 13,874 women who participated in the multi-ethnic, multi-race study of mid-aged women called the Study of Women's Health Across the Nation (SWAN). Study participants completed a 15-min telephone or in-person interview that contained questions on a variety of health-related topics. Items of interest for these analyses include global QOL, menstrual history (to assess menopausal status), sociodemographics, health status, lifestyle, and psychosocial variables. Results showed that in unadjusted analyses, early perimenopausal women reported lower QOL compared with premenopausal women, but menopausal status was no longer associated with QOL when analyses were adjusted for other variables. In multivariable models, being married and having low levels of perceived stress were associated with better QOL across all racial/ethnic groups. While there were many consistencies across racial/ethnic groups, we also found that the nature of the associations between QOL and education, marital status, perceived stress and social support varied across racial/ethnic groups.

Abstract
OBJECTIVE To investigate the factors that influence therapeutic decisions at menopause, particularly those related to the burden of menopause symptoms, in a population of women living in Massachusetts, as part of the multisite DAMES (Decisions At Menopause Study). DESIGN A survey using face-to-face interviews with a randomly selected sample of 293 women aged 45 to 55 who are members of the Fallon Community Health Plan in Central Massachusetts. The instrument combined closed- and open-ended questions and elicited information about a number of health topics, including the symptoms experienced by respondents over the preceding month and the decisions they made regarding therapies. RESULTS Symptom reporting was found to be relatively high, with more than half of the sample reporting hot flashes, sleep disturbances, joint pains, and headaches in the month preceding the survey; one third to one half of the women reported palpitations, night sweats, fatigue, and numbness. The highest frequency of symptoms occurred during perimenopause. Nearly four fifths of the women consulted a healthcare provider, and one fifth used hormone therapy. More than half of the respondents said menopause is a difficult phase, and about half found decisionmaking about it to be difficult. CONCLUSIONS This study documents a relatively heavy burden of symptoms in a relatively healthy population and provides an update on earlier studies in Massachusetts.

Abstract
The Ageless Health Needs Assessment is a multi-phase project designed to assess the health and quality of life of the 60 and older population along the U.S.-México border. The present study used a health survey, which was administered to 1,450 participants by telephone and through face-to-face interviews in Western Texas and Southern New Mexico. Several demographic differences were found between the samples: 52% of the Texas sample was Hispanic compared to 23% of the New Mexico sample; 63% of the Texas sample was born in the U.S. compared to 92% of the New Mexico sample; and Texans reported less education and lower incomes than New Mexicans. Exploratory factor analysis revealed four health-related factors, which were labeled Physical Health, Emotional Health, General Health, and Activity Potential. A MANCOVA showed significant differences between groups after controlling for socioeconomic status and age.

Abstract
OBJECTIVE We aimed to evaluate the effect of leisure time physical activity on blood lipid levels, in a random sample of cardiovascular disease-free individuals from the Attica basin. DESIGN AND METHODS The ATTICA study is a population-based cohort, which during 2001-2002 randomly enrolled 2772 men (n = 1376, 45 +/- 12 years old) and women (n = 1396, 45 +/- 13 years old). Physical activity status was evaluated through intensity (kcal/min expended per day), frequency (per week) and duration (min). Multivariate data analysis evaluated the association of blood lipids with physical activity levels. RESULTS 578 (42%) men and 584 (40%) women were physically active. Compared to sedentary women, physically active women had lower levels of total cholesterol (P < 0.05), low-density lipoprotein (LDL) (P < 0.05), oxidized LDL-cholesterol (P < 0.05), triglycerides (P < 0.05) and apolipoprotein B (P < 0.05) and higher levels of high-density lipoprotein (HDL)-cholesterol (P < 0.05) and apolipoprotein A1 (P < 0.05). Similar associations were observed in men, but they did not reach statistical significance. However, after adjustments for age, smoking habits, body mass index and dietary intake were made, the effect of physical activity on blood lipids remained statistically significant only for HDL-cholesterol (P < 0.05) and apolipoprotein A1 (P < 0.05) levels in women. Moreover, physical activity was associated with lower total cholesterol levels both in nonsmoker men (-7%, P = 0.032) and nonsmoker women (-2%, P = 0.064) and lower triglyceride levels in nonsmoker men (-15%, P = 0.086) and nonsmoker women (-9%, P = 0.036). CONCLUSIONS Although almost all blood lipids were inversely associated with physical activity status, only HDL-cholesterol and apolipoprotein A1 concentrations were significantly affected by exercise in women.

Abstract
OBJECTIVES In this review of qualitative data from the Cross-Cultural Activity Participation Study (CAPS), we synthesize the major findings of studies designed to identify minority women's perceptions of physical activity. METHODS We interviewed 30 African American and 26 American Indian women with constant comparison techniques. We analyzed the data with a coding system developed from the data. RESULTS The women led active, busy lives. Most perceived physical activity as being good for them, identified constraints to time and space for physical activity, and wanted social support for physical activity. Sociocultural issues also were related to physical activity. CONCLUSIONS Both personal and cultural values influenced the women's physical activity behaviors.

Abstract
PURPOSE To discuss application of the Stages of Change theoretical framework and provide clinical tips on exercise adherence among midlife women. Included is a checklist to assist the nurse practitioner (NP) in effectively delivering the message. DATA SOURCES Review of the current scientific literature on exercise adherence and the Stages of Change model. CONCLUSIONS Middle-aged women comprise a unique population. Determining the woman's readiness for change using the Stages of Change model, NPs can routinely include appropriate exercise recommendations in their practices. IMPLICATIONS FOR PRACTICE Nurse practitioners are in a unique position to promote healthy behaviors by counseling women in midlife about adopting an active lifestyle. Exercise counseling is an essential component of healthcare, especially among middle-aged women who are experiencing physical, emotional, and social changes.
