Perceived self- and social stigma among campus-based food pantry users

Participants: A critical public health issue facing many universities is food insecurity. Food insecurity has been associated with many academic, physical, and mental health issues. Although the number of campus-based food pantries has grown exponentially, self-, and social stigma have been associated with low rates of utilization. Methods: The current quantitative study examined perceptions of food pantry stigma among food insecure college students (n = 93) who have accessed food pantry services. Results: Results reveal moderate levels of food pantry stigma with no statistically significant differences in food pantry stigma scores by level of food security (p = .322) and frequency of food pantry use (p = .263). Few participants indicated perceptions of social stigma, yet mixed results were observed regarding self-stigma. Conclusion: More research is warranted aimed at gaining a better understanding of food pantry stigma among college students that can inform campus-based interventions, practices, and policies aimed at increasing the utilization of campus-based food pantry resources.

Correlates of Lifestyle Physical Activity Among Young Arab American Women

BACKGROUND

Young Arab American women are at risk for cardiovascular disease, but there is limited data on their physical activity (PA) engagement.

OBJECTIVES

The aim of this study was to examine the relationship between PA and its correlates in young Arab American women. The objectives of this study were to: (1) describe self-reported lifestyle PA behaviors of young Arab American women and (2) examine the relationship between their self-reported lifestyle PA, device-measured lifestyle PA (combined moderate/vigorous and steps), and potentially associated factors (demographics, physical measures, individual factors, and behavior cognition factors).

METHODS

This cross-sectional study was conducted with women 18 to 35 years of age and Arab American (n = 50) in the Midwest Region of the United States. Participants wore ActiGraph GT3X-BT monitors for 7 days; self-report measures included the International Physical Activity Questionnaire, demographics, acculturation, discrimination, religiosity, self-efficacy, and social support.

RESULTS

The mean age of participants was 25.5 years (SD: 5.5; range: 18-35). Per ActiGraph, the average daily steps were 5946 (SD: 2783); only 24% met the moderate-intensity PA guidelines. Self-efficacy was significantly associated with increased moderate-to-vigorous PA (B = 0.37; P = .012).

CONCLUSION

The average daily steps for the young Arab American women in this study were of low active classification. More than 75% of the women failed to meet the recommended weekly moderate/vigorous PA guidelines. Our study supports the importance of targeting and tailoring PA interventions on young Arab American women who have low self-efficacy for overcoming barriers to lifestyle PA.

Exploring the Association between Daily Distributional Patterns of Physical Activity and Cardiovascular Mortality Risk among Older Adults in NHANES 2003-2006

PURPOSE

Cardiovascular disease (CVD) is one of the leading causes of death worldwide. Physical activity (PA) has previously been shown to be a prominent risk factor for CVD mortality. Traditionally, measurements of PA have been self-reported and based on various summary metrics. However, recent advances in wearable technology provide continuously monitored and objectively measured physical activity data. This facilitates a more comprehensive interpretation of the implications of PA in the context of CVD mortality by considering its daily patterns and compositions.

METHODS

This study utilized accelerometer data from the 2003-2006 National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey (NHANES) on 2,816 older adults aged 50-85 and mortality data from the National Death Index (NDI) in December 2019. A novel partially functional distributional analysis method was used to quantify and understand the association between daily distributional patterns of physical activity and cardiovascular mortality risk through a multivariable functional Cox model.

RESULTS

A higher mean intensity of daily PA during the day was associated with a reduced hazard of CVD mortality after adjusting for other higher order distributional summaries of PA and age, gender, race, body mass index (BMI), smoking and coronary heart disease (CHD). A higher daily variability of PA during afternoon was associated with a reduced hazard of CVD mortality, after adjusting for the other predictors, particularly on weekdays. The subjects with a lower variability of PA, despite having same mean PA throughout the day, could have a lower reserve of PA and hence could be at increased risk for CVD mortality.

CONCLUSIONS

Our results demonstrate that not only the mean intensity of daily PA during daytime, but also the variability of PA during afternoon could be an important protective factor against the risk of CVD-mortality. Considering circadian rhythm of PA as well as its daily compositions can be useful for designing time-of-day and intensity-specific PA interventions to protect against the risk of CVD mortality.

The Impact of Air Pollution Information on Individuals' Exercise Behavior: Empirical Study Using Wearable and Mobile Devices Data

BACKGROUND

Physical exercise and exposure to air pollution have counteracting effects on individuals' health outcomes. Knowledge on individuals' real-time exercise behavior response to different pollution information sources remains inadequate.

OBJECTIVE

This study aims to examine the extent to which individuals avoid polluted air during exercise activities in response to different air pollution information sources.

METHODS

We used data on individuals' exercise behaviors captured by wearable and mobile devices in 83 Chinese cities over a 2-year time span. In our data set, 35.99% (5896/16,379) of individuals were female and 64% (10,483/16,379) were male, and their ages predominantly ranged from 18 to 50 years. We further augmented the exercise behavior data with air pollution information that included city-hourly level measures of the Air Quality Index and particulate matter 2.5 concentration (in µg/m3), and weather data that include city-hourly level measures of air temperature (ºC), dew point (ºC), wind speed (m/s), and wind direction (degrees). We used a linear panel fixed effect model to estimate individuals' exercise-aversion behaviors (ie, running exercise distance at individual-hour, city-hour, or city-day levels) and conducted robustness checks using the endogenous treatment effect model and regression discontinuity method. We examined if alternative air pollution information sources could moderate (ie, substitute or complement) the role of mainstream air pollution indicators.

RESULTS

Our results show that individuals exhibit a reduction of running exercise behaviors by about 0.50 km (or 7.5%; P<.001) during instances of moderate to severe air pollution, and there is no evidence of reduced distances in instances of light air pollution. Furthermore, individuals' exercise-aversion behaviors in response to mainstream air pollution information are heightened by different alternative information sources, such as social connections and social media user-generated content about air pollution.

CONCLUSIONS

Our results highlight the complementary role of different alternative information sources of air pollution in inducing individuals' aversion behaviors and the importance of using different information channels to increase public awareness beyond official air pollution alerts.

Beyond validation: getting wearable activity trackers into cardiovascular care-a discussion paper

This paper addresses the challenge of integrating wearable activity trackers (WATs) into cardiovascular disease care. Despite evidence supporting the use of trackers for monitoring and promoting physical activity, implementation challenges persist in clinical settings. The paper emphasizes the lack of systematic, evidence-based implementation approaches for integrating trackers. It underscores the urgent need for stakeholder collaboration between clinicians, patients, implementation scientists, researchers, health and technology partners, and the use of proven implementation science methodologies. This is crucial for bridging the gap and ensuring effective translation of WATs into cardiovascular care, meeting the increasing demand from patients and clinicians.

Proportion, Correlates and the Associations of Meeting 24-h Movement Guidelines With Mental Well-Being and Psychological Distress: A Cross-Sectional Study of 10 589 Chinese Students

BACKGROUND

The increased trends in psychological distress and mental illness have been of great significance in public health concerns. The study aimed to investigate the proportion and correlates of meeting 24-h movement guidelines (including moderate to vigorous physical activity, screen time and sleep duration) and the associations between 24-h movement guidelines met and mental well-being and psychological distress in a large sample of Chinese students.

METHODS

All participants received a physical examination and filled out questionnaires in this study. Chi-square tests were used to analyse the proportion of reaching 24-h guidelines by gender and logistic regression was used to analyse correlates of meeting 24-h guidelines. Two binary logistic regression models were used to analyse the association between meeting 24-h guidelines and mental well-being and psychological distress. The back-propagation artificial neural network was used to describe the importance of the independent variables.

RESULTS

The findings revealed a generally low rate of meeting the 24-h movement guidelines, particularly concerning moderate to vigorous physical activity (16.5%). Meeting all three guidelines was related to better mental health in both boys and girls. Particularly, meeting screen time guideline and meeting sleep duration guideline appeared to be more important on mental outcomes, compared to meeting moderate to vigorous physical activity guideline. Compared with boys, girls were more susceptible to the influences of 24-h movement guidelines on mental health.

CONCLUSIONS

Meeting all three components of the 24-h movement guidelines was associated with the most favourable mental health outcomes for both boys and girls. Thus, maintaining a daily balance of sufficient physical activity, limited screen time, and adequate sleep is crucial for enhancing the mental health status of students.

Balancing Time for Health Behaviors: Associations of Time Perspective With Physical Activity and Weight Management in Older Adults

PURPOSE

To examine associations between time perspective and health promotion behaviors of physical activity and weight management.

DESIGN

Quantitative cross-sectional.

SETTING

This study is part of the Betula project on aging, memory, and dementia in Northern Sweden.

SUBJECTS

417 older adults aged between 55 and 85 years.

MEASURES

Swedish-Zimbardo Time Perspective Inventory; Physical Activity in the past year, past week, and in comparison with others of similar age; Weight Management = Body Mass Index (BMI; kg/m2).

RESULTS

After controlling for age, sex, and years of education, hierarchical linear regression indicated a Balanced Time Perspective was significantly associated with more physical activity in the past year (P = .04), the past week (P < .001), and in comparison with others (P < .01). Past Negative time perspective was associated with less physical activity in the past year (P = .03), and in comparison with others (P = .03). Present Fatalistic was associated with less physical activity during the past week (P = .03), and in comparison with others (P = .01). Present Hedonistic was associated with more physical activity the past week (P = .03), and in comparison with others (P = .03). Past Negative was associated with higher BMI (P = .02), and Future Negative were associated with lower BMI (P = .01). Taken collectively, greater positivity and flexibility across time perspectives was associated with more physical activity, whereas negative oriented time perspectives related with less physical activity and poorer weight management.

CONCLUSION

Time perspective can be associated with health behaviors in older adults and have implications for health across the lifespan. Health promotion interventions may target older adults' enjoyment of exercise and weight management in the present, rather than highlight potential negative health outcomes in the future.

Insights from neighbourhood walking interviews using the Living Environments and Active Aging Framework (LEAAF) in community-dwelling older adults

We aimed to understand whether neighbourhood characteristics are associated with movement and social behaviors using walking interviews with 28 community-dwelling older adults (aged 65+). Results indicated support for each component and each relationship in our proposed "Living Environments and Active Aging Framework". Additional themes such as neighbourhoods with children, moving to neighbourhoods with opportunities for social activity and movement, and lingering effects of pandemic closures provided novel insights into the relationship between the living environment (neighbourhood) and active aging. Future work exploring sex and gender effects on these relationships, and work with equity-deserving groups is needed.

Leisure-time physical activity motives and perceived gains for individuals with spinal cord injury

STUDY DESIGN

OBJECTIVES

To examine motives to, and perceived gains from, leisure-time physical activity (LTPA) in people with spinal cord injury (SCI).

SETTING

Community.

METHODS

One hundred and five physically active individuals with SCI undertook an online survey and a semi-structured interview. The Exercise Motives and Gains Inventory was used to examine the movies towards, and the gains from LTPA, and the Leisure-time Physical Activity Questionnaire was administered via interview to gather LTPA data. A cross-sectional analysis, which included descriptive, inferential, and regression statistics, was conducted on all participants, physical activity (PA) guideline adherers and PA guideline non-adherers.

RESULTS

The most common motives for LTPA were improvements in health and fitness, management of appearance and weight, and avoidance of illness. The most common gains from LTPA included improved health, fitness, strength and endurance, increased nimbleness, and enjoyment and revitalisation.

CONCLUSIONS

Whilst health enhancement appears to be a significant motivator for LTPA, other psychosocial aspects, such as affiliation and revitalisation, appear to influence engagement and volume of LTPA. Regular LTPA should be encouraged for its health benefits, and emphasis should be placed on promoting its ability to reduce illness, facilitate affiliation, and manage stress.

Decline in Sensory Integration in Old Age and Its Related Functional Brain Connectivity Correlates Observed during a Virtual Reality Task

Sensory integration is an essential human function whose decline impacts quality of life, particularly in older adults. Herein, we propose an arm-reaching task based on a virtual reality head-mounted display system to assess sensory integration in daily life, and we examined whether reaching task performance was associated with resting-state functional connectivity (rsFC) between the brain regions involved in sensory integration. We hypothesized that declining sensory integration would affect performance during a reaching task with multiple cognitive loads. Using a task in which a young/middle-aged group showed only small individual differences, older adults showed large individual differences in the gap angle between the reaching hand and the target position, which was used to assess sensory integration function. Additionally, rsfMRI data were used to identify correlations between rsFC and performance in older adults, showing that performance was correlated with connectivity between the primary motor area and the left inferior temporal gyrus and temporo-occipital region. Connectivity between areas is related to visuomotor integration; thus, the results suggest the involvement of visuomotor integration in the decline of sensory integration function and the validity of the gap angle during this VR reaching task as an index of functional decline.

Joint Associations of Diet and Device-Measured Physical Activity with Mortality and Incident CVD and Cancer: A Prospective Analysis of the UK Biobank Study

BACKGROUND

We examined the joint associations of diet and device-measured intensity-specific physical activity (PA) with all-cause mortality (ACM), cardiovascular disease (CVD), and cancer incidence.

METHODS

We used data from 79,988 participants from the UK Biobank, a population-based prospective cohort study. Light PA (LPA), moderate-to-vigorous PA (MVPA), vigorous PA (VPA), and total PA (TPA) were measured using a wrist-worn accelerometer. Diet quality score (DQS) was based on 10 foods and ranged from 0 (unhealthiest) to 100 (healthiest) points. We derived joint PA and diet variables. Outcomes were ACM, CVD, and cancer incidence including PA, diet and adiposity-related (PDAR) cancer.

RESULTS

During a median follow-up of 8 years, 2,863 deaths occurred, 11,053 participants developed CVD, 7,005 developed cancer, and 3,400 developed PDAR cancer. Compared with the least favorable referent group (bottom PA tertile/low DQS), participants with middle and high (total and intensity specific) PA, except for LPA, had lower ACM risk and incident CVD risk, regardless of DQS. For example, among middle and high VPA and high DQS groups, CVD HR were 0.79 (95% CI, 0.74-0.86) and 0.75 (95% CI, 0.69-0.82), respectively. The pattern of cancer results was less pronounced but in agreement with the ACM and CVD incidence findings (e.g., HR, 0.90, 95% CI, 0.81-0.99; 0.88, 0.79-0.98; and 0.82, 0.74-0.92 among high VPA for low, moderate, and high DQS groups, respectively).

CONCLUSIONS

Device-measured PA reveals novel joint associations with diet on health outcomes.

IMPACT

Our results emphasize the crucial role of PA in addition to a healthy diet for reducing chronic diseases and mortality risk.

Meeting the Aerobic and Muscle-Strengthening Physical Activity Guidelines Among Older US Adults, National Health Interview Survey 1998-2018

The Physical Activity Guidelines for Americans, second edition, recommends older adults participate in ≥150 minutes per week of moderate-intensity equivalent aerobic activity and ≥2 days per week of muscle-strengthening activity. We estimated prevalence and trends of meeting the guidelines among US adults aged ≥65 years from 1998 to 2018. Using the 1998-2018 National Health Interview Survey, we estimated the prevalence of meeting aerobic, muscle-strengthening, and combined physical activity guidelines stratified by age group, sex, race and ethnicity, and education level. Within age groups, we calculated prevalence differences by sociodemographic categories. Prevalence of meeting each guideline increased for all age groups and most sociodemographic subgroups. The increased magnitude of meeting the combined guideline from 1998-2000 to 2016-2018 differed across levels of educational attainment for most age groups. Despite increasing over time, the prevalence among older adults of meeting physical activity guidelines remains low (range for combined guideline: 7.2%-17.2%).

Disability and labour market participation among smallholder farmers in Western Kenya

BACKGROUND

Despite the importance of labour market participation and the high number of people with disabilities in rural Africa who rely on subsistence agriculture to survive, very few studies have documented labour market outcomes among farmers with and without disabilities in Africa.

OBJECTIVE

We examined how labour market participation differed by disability and other factors among smallholder farmers in Western Kenya.

METHODS

We use cross-sectional data collected between January and April 2022 from sorghum farmers enrolled in a trial evaluating the impact of a programme designed to improve labour market participation among sorghum farmers in rural Western Kenya. Disability and Labour market outcomes were assessed using questions from the Washington Group /ILO Labor Force Survey Disability Module the ILO Labour Force Survey module respectively. Univariate and multiple regression analyses were conducted to identify socio-demographic characteristics and other related factors associated with labour market participation.

RESULTS

Among 4459 participants, disability was reported by 20.3% of women and 12.3% of men. Labour market participation was reported by 77.1% and 81.3% of women and men, respectively. Adjusting for demographic confounders, having a disability was associated with a lower likelihood of labour market participation (odds ratio 0.59, 95% confidence interval, 0.42-0.83, P = 0.001). These findings were similar in a modified model that looked at functional difficulties separately from anxiety and depression. Women, older participants, and those who were dependent on others were also more likely not to report participation in the labour market.

CONCLUSIONS

Increased recognition and understanding of functional limitations among smallholder farmers is vital for the success of economic empowerment programmes aimed at increasing labour market participation among the most vulnerable populations.

Accelerometer-Based Estimates of Physical Activity and Sedentary Time Among Samoan Adults

BACKGROUND

The prevalence of obesity-related cardiometabolic disease in Samoa is among the highest globally. While physical activity is a modifiable risk factor for obesity-related disease, little is known about physical activity levels among adult Samoans. Using wrist-worn accelerometer-based devices, this study aimed to characterize physical activity among Samoan adults.

METHODS

Samoan adults (n = 385; 55% female, mean [SD] age 52 [10] y) wore Actigraph GT3X+ devices for 7 to 10 days. General linear models were used to examine mean daily minutes of sedentary time, light physical activity, and moderate to vigorous physical activity by various participant characteristics.

RESULTS

Time spent in moderate to vigorous physical activity did not differ statistically between men (88 [5] min; 95% confidence interval [CI], 80-97) and women (78 [4] min; 95% CI, 70-86; P = .08). Women, however, spent more time than men in light physical activity: 380 (7) minutes (95% CI, 367-393) versus 344 (7) minutes (95% CI, 329-358; P < .001). While there were no differences in physical activity by census region, education, or occupation among women, men in urban areas spent significantly less time in moderate to vigorous physical activity than those in peri-urban and rural areas (P = .015). Women with class II/III obesity spent more time in sedentary activities than those with healthy weight or overweight/class I obesity (P = .048).

CONCLUSIONS

This study characterizes physical activity among Samoan adults and highlights variation by sex, urbanicity, and weight status. In providing initial device-measured estimates of physical activity in Samoa, this analysis establishes a baseline from which the success of future attempts to intervene on physical activity may be assessed.

Investigating public understanding and actions regarding Aedes mosquitoes and dengue prevention across altitudinal range in central Nepal

BACKGROUNDS OBJECTIVES

Dengue fever, transmitted by Aedes mosquitoes, is a significant public health concern in Nepal. An extensive Knowledge, Attitude, and Practice (KAP) survey related to Aedes mosquitoes and prevention of dengue was conducted along the route from Matihani (62 m above sea level) to Kalinchok (3840 m asl) in central Nepal. This research examined residents' awareness of Aedes mosquitoes and the diseases they transmit, aiming to support the World Health Organization's national and global fight against mosquito-borne diseases.

METHODS

The survey included 550 participants aged 18-75 years (249 males and 201 females). Door-to-door campaigns were conducted to gather data on knowledge scores, practices, and attitudes about Aedes mosquitoes using a standard structured questionnaire.

RESULTS

Findings of this study revealed a moderate level of knowledge across the study area, with a mean knowledge score of 5.525±2.58 (correct answer rate of 46.05%). While 99.6% of respondents were aware of dengue transmission by mosquitoes, only 64.5% were able to report Aedes mosquitoes as the key transmitter. Less than one-third of the participants (27.8%) were familiar with black-and-white stripes in Aedes. Additionally, only 36.7% were knowledgeable about the day-biting behavior of Aedes mosquitoes.

INTERPRETATION CONCLUSION

This KAP survey provides valuable insights into community understanding of Aedes mosquitoes and dengue prevention practices associated with various Nepalese communities residing in low to high altitudes of central Nepal. These findings can be adopted to address the increasing health burden faced by countries with low-to-high altitude regions within the Hindu Kush Himalayas.

Transitioning to Working from Home Due to the COVID-19 Pandemic Significantly Increased Sedentary Behavior and Decreased Physical Activity: A Meta-Analysis

At the start of the COVID-19 pandemic, many workplaces transitioned to remote work, which altered lifestyle behaviors. We conducted a meta-analysis to understand if the transition to working from home due to the pandemic affected workers' physical activity and sedentary behavior worldwide. We reviewed articles published between November 2019 and May 2022. Of an initial 3485 articles, a total of 17 were included, 15 of 17 were included for their physical activity (PA) comparisons (n = 36,650), and 12 of 17 (n = 57,254) were included for their sedentary behavior (SB) comparisons (10 studies have data for both PA and SB). This work is registered through PROSPERO (CRD42022356000). Working from home resulted in a significant decrease in PA (Hedge's g = -0.29, 95% CI [-0.41, -0.18]) and an increase in SB (Hedge's g = +0.36, 95% CI [0.20, 0.52]). Working from home impaired preventative activity behaviors, and these results are relevant to worker health as the future of work evolves beyond the pandemic.

Joint association of genetic risk and accelerometer-measured physical activity with incident coronary artery disease in the UK biobank cohort

Previous research demonstrates the joint association of self-reported physical activity and genotype with coronary artery disease. However, an existing research gap is whether accelerometer-measured overall physical activity or physical activity intensity can offset genetic predisposition to coronary artery disease. This study explores the independent and joint associations of accelerometer-measured physical activity and genetic predisposition with incident coronary artery disease. Incident coronary artery disease based on hospital inpatient records and death register data serves as the outcome of this study. Polygenic risk score and overall physical activity, measured as Euclidean Norm Minus One, and intensity, measured as minutes per day of moderate-to-vigorous intensity physical activity (MVPA), are examined both linearly and by decile. The UK Biobank population-based cohort recruited over 500,000 individuals aged 40 to 69 between 2006 and 2010, with 103,712 volunteers participating in a weeklong wrist-worn accelerometer study from 2013 to 2015. Individuals of White British ancestry (n = 65,079) meeting the genotyping and accelerometer-based inclusion criteria and with no missing covariates were included in the analytic sample. In the sample of 65,079 individuals, the mean (SD) age was 62.51 (7.76) and 61% were female. During a median follow-up of 6.8 years, 1,382 cases of coronary artery disease developed. At the same genetic risk, physical activity intensity had a hazard ratio (HR) of 0.41 (95% CI: 0.29-0.60) at the 90th compared to 10th percentile, equivalent to 31.68 and 120.96 minutes of moderate-to-vigorous physical activity per day, respectively, versus an HR of 0.61 (95% CI: 0.52-0.72) for overall physical activity. The combination of high genetic risk and low physical activity intensity showed the greatest risk, with an individual at the 10th percentile of genetic risk and 90th percentile of intensity facing an HR of 0.14 (95% CI: 0.09-0.21) compared to an individual at the 90th percentile of genetic risk and 10th percentile of intensity. Physical activity, especially physical activity intensity, is associated with an attenuation of some of the risk of coronary artery disease but this pattern does not vary by genetic risk. This accelerometer-based study provides the clearest evidence to date regarding the joint influence of genetics, overall physical activity, and physical activity intensity on coronary artery disease.

Physical activity assessment in rheumatoid arthritis: a 120-patient cross-sectional study

INTRODUCTION

Rheumatoid arthritis (RA) is a chronic inflammatory disease frequently associated with comorbidities such as cardiovascular diseases. RA patients are more prone to physical inactivity than the general population.

AIM

Our study aimed to evaluate physical activity (PA) in patients with RA and to assess barriers that influence it in RA characteristics.

METHODS

This was a cross sectional study of 120 RA patients. Comorbidities, patients' characteristics, disease activity, function assessed by Health Assessment Questionnaire (HAQ), severity parameters, and extra-articular manifestations were assessed. PA was evaluated with the Short form of the International Physical Activity Questionnaire (IPAQ-S). Factors influencing PA were analyzed.

RESULTS

Mean age was 56.1±10.1 years and sex-ratio was 0.14. Screening for comorbidities showed that 30.7% of patients had hypertension, 18.4% had diabetes, and 71.1% were obese or overweight. Moderate to high disease activity was found in 55.6% of patients. Mean HAQ was 0.9±0.6. Evaluation of PA revealed that mean continuous IPAQ-S was 4226.02±4703 MET-min per week [0-24276]. Physical activity level (categorical IPAQ-S) was low in 24.2% of patients, moderate in 30.8%, and high in 45%. Continuous IPAQ-S was negatively correlated with age (r=-0.18,p=0.045), age of disease onset (r=-0.18,p=0.049), and HAQ (r=-0.25,p=0.01). Besides, categorical IPAQ-S was significantly associated with the presence of hypertension (p=0.03) and gout (p=0.02). Concerning RA parameters, categorical IPAQ-S was significantly associated with HAQ (p=0.03).

CONCLUSION

Our study showed that PA in RA patients can provide significant improvement in terms of quality of life and function. In RA, regular PA should be part of disease management.

Associations of device-measured and self-reported physical activity with alcohol consumption: Secondary analyses of a randomized controlled trial (FitForChange)

BACKGROUND

Physical activity (PA) is increasingly used as an adjunct treatment for alcohol use disorder (AUD). Previous studies have relied on self-report measures of PA, which are prone to measurement error. In the context of a randomized controlled trial of PA for AUD, we examined: (1) associations between device-measured and self-reported PA, (2) associations between PA measurements and alcohol use, and (3) the feasibility of obtaining device-measured PA data in this population.

METHOD

One-hundred and forty individuals with clinician-diagnosed AUD participated in a 12-week intervention comparing usual care (phone counselling) to yoga-based exercise and aerobic exercise. Device-measured PA (Actigraph GT3x), self-reported PA (International Physical Activity Questionnaire) and alcohol consumption (Timeline Follow Back Method) were assessed before and after the trial. Effects of the interventions on PA levels were assessed using linear mixed models.

RESULTS

In total, 42% (n=59) of participants returned usable device-measured PA data (mean age= 56±10 years, 73% male). Device-measured and self-reported vigorous-intensity PA were correlated (β= -0.02, 95%CI= -0.03, -0.00). No associations were found for moderate-intensity PA. Compared to usual care, time spent in device-measured light-intensity PA increased in the aerobic exercise group (∆= 357, 95%CI= 709, 5.24). Increases in device-measured light-intensity PA were associated with fewer standard drinks (∆= -0.24, 95%CI= -0.03, -0.44), and fewer heavy drinking days (∆= -0.06, 95%CI=-0.01, -0.10).

CONCLUSION

Increases in light-intensity/habitual PA were associated with less alcohol consumption in adults with AUD. Self-reported PA data should be interpreted with caution. Incentives are needed to obtain device-measured PA data in AUD populations.

Type and timing of ultra-processed foods consumption and its association with dietary intake and physical activity in women with obesity living in poverty

BACKGROUND

The present study aimed to investigate the type and timing of ultra-processed foods (UPF) consumption and its association with dietary intake (DI) and physical activity (PA) in women with obesity living in poverty.

METHODS

A cross-sectional study was employed. Obesity was defined by at least two criteria (body mass index, waist circumference or % fat mass). Poverty was defined as the three lowest classes of the Brazilian Economic Classification Criterion. PA was measured with triaxial accelerometers and DI was assessed with three 24-h dietary recalls. Foods were categorised according to the NOVA classification, with UPF classified into five subgroups, as well as the timing of consumption into six meals.

RESULTS

In total, 56 adult women were included. Overall energy intake was 1653.21 (503.22) kcal/day. UPF intake was 21.62% (11.94%) kcal/day, being higher at breakfast (4.91% kcal/day), afternoon snack (5.39% kcal/day) and dinner (5.01% kcal/day). Only UPF subgroup 4 (sandwich biscuits, sweets, or treats) showed a positive association with energy intake (β = 54.40 [27.6, 81.10] kcal/day) and a negative association with protein intake (β = -0.31% [-0.48%, -0.14%] kcal/day). UPF consumption in morning (β = -0.41% [-0.79%, -0.02%] kcal/day) and afternoon (β = -0.18% [-0.33%, -0.04%] kcal/day) snacks was associated with lower protein intake. Furthermore, lunchtime UPF consumption was positively associated with walking time (β = 0.16% [0.02%; 0.30%]) and steps/hour (β = 8.72 [1.50; 15.94] steps/h).

CONCLUSIONS

Women with obesity living in poverty consume more UPF during breakfast, afternoon snack and dinner. Physical activity is positively associated with UPF consumption at lunch. UPF, such as sandwich biscuits, sweets or treats, contribute to increasing energy intake and reducing protein intake.

Comparing the impact of simple and educational point-of-decision messages on nutritional choice outcomes

Emerging evidence suggests that point-of-decision messages may be an effective way to promote healthy food choices. Previous studies show improvements in overall nutritional quality, as well as increases in underconsumed food categories, such as fruits and vegetables, and underconsumed nutrients of public health concern, like dietary fiber. However, there have been multiple approaches used for delivering point-of-decision messages, including very brief messages that remind individuals to consider health during choice, as well as longer messages providing educational information about health benefits. While both approaches have demonstrated positive impacts on outcomes, there is no comparative evidence of the messages' effectiveness. In this study, we examine the impact of four messages on two nutritional attributes of cereals selected in a two-round pre- and post-message breakfast cereal choice exercise with numerous (n = 33) breakfast cereals available. Data were collected via an online survey of adult US residents recruited from the Prolific consumer panel. Three of the messages were simple reminder messages (taste, health, fiber), while there was additionally a longer fiber-focused messaging detailing the health benefits of fiber. Findings show that the simple messages outperformed the longer educational message, though there were some trade-offs between general health and fiber messages. The simple dietary fiber-focused message resulted in significantly higher dietary fiber content in cereals chosen than in any other messaging condition, while the general health message did not result in significantly higher measures of nutritional quality than the simple fiber message. The results of the study suggest that simpler messages may be more effective at increasing the nutritional quality of food choices. Additionally, messages focused on specific nutrients lead to significantly greater increases in the content of those nutrients.

Self-determined motivational health coaching ('SAMI') during outpatient treatment to promote physical activity of people with serious mental illness: a pilot controlled trial

BACKGROUND

Brief motivational coaching, integrated into health care; seems promising to address physical inactivity of people with serious mental illness (SMI).

AIMS

To test the impact of a self-determined health coaching approach (the "SAMI" intervention) during outpatient mental health treatment on moderate-to-vigorous physical activity (MVPA) of people with SMI.

METHODS

Adults (mean age = 41.9, SD = 10.9) with an ICD-10 diagnosis of mental illness were semi-randomized to the SAMI-intervention group (IG) or control group (CG). The IG received 30 minutes of health coaching based on the self-determination theory (SDT). MVPA and sedentary time (ST) were measured with the International Physical Activity Questionnaire - short form (IPAQ-SF) and symptoms of mental illness with the Brief Symptom Inventory (BSI-18), each at baseline and follow-up (3-4 months). Differences in primary (MVPA) and secondary (ST, BSI-18) outcomes were evaluated using negative binomial regressions and general linear models.

RESULTS

In the IG (n = 30), MVPA increased from 278 (interquartile range [IQR] = 175-551) to 435 (IQR = 161-675) min/week compared to a decrease from 250 (IQR = 180-518) to 155 (IQR = 0-383) min/week in the CG (n = 26; adjusted relative difference at follow-up: Incidence Rate Ratio [IRR] = 2.14, 95% CI: 1.17-3.93, p = 0.014). There were no statistically significant differences in ST and BSI-18.

CONCLUSIONS

Brief self-determined health coaching during outpatient treatment could increase post-treatment MVPA in people with SMI, potentially up to a clinically relevant level. However, great uncertainty (for all outcomes) weakens the assessment of clinical relevance.

Older Veteran Experiences of using Technology during a Multicomponent Telerehabilitation Program: A Convergent Mixed Methods Study

Less than half of U.S. veterans meet physical activity guidelines. Even though changing physical activity can be challenging, prior studies have demonstrated that it is possible. Older adults are using technology to aid in such behavior change. However, research that explores the mechanisms of how technology can aid in behavior change is lacking, especially among older veterans. Thus, the purpose of this secondary, convergent mixed methods study was to explore how older veterans engaged with technologies that were used during a multicomponent telerehabilitation program. The study included veterans aged ≥60 years with ≥3 chronic medical conditions and physical function limitation. Quantitative data were collected during the primary randomized controlled trial, and qualitative data were collected via individual interviews following completion of the telerehabilitation program. Data were merged and then analyzed by high vs. low technology engagement groups. Key similarities and differences between groups were identified in five domains: satisfaction with the virtual environment, coping self-efficacy, perceptions of Annie (automated text messaging platform), experiences using the activity monitor, and self-management skills. Findings can help inform the successful integration of similar technologies into physical rehabilitation programs. Further study is warranted to understand additional factors and mechanisms that influence technology engagement in telerehabilitation.

Correlates of physical activity in ambulatory people with spinal cord injury during the first year after inpatient rehabilitation

STUDY DESIGN

Longitudinal cohort study.

OBJECTIVES

Examine the longitudinal association between mobility and level of physical activity (PA) and explore which other factors are also associated with level of PA in ambulatory people with Spinal Cord Injury (SCI) during the first-year post-inpatient rehabilitation.

SETTING

Three SCI-specialized rehabilitation centers and the Dutch community.

METHODS

Forty-seven adults with recent SCI and ambulatory function were included. All had motor incomplete lesions, 49% had tetraplegia, and the mean age was 55 ± 13 years. Duration of accelerometry-based all-day PA and self-reported level of mobility, exertion of walking, pain, fatigue, depressive mood symptoms, fear of falling, exercise self-efficacy, and attitude toward PA were measured just before discharge from inpatient rehabilitation and 6 and 12 months after discharge. All data were longitudinally analyzed using generalized estimating equations analyses. Models were corrected for age, lesion level, and time since injury.

RESULTS

Mobility was longitudinally associated with level of PA (beta: 4.5, P < 0.001, R2: 41%). In addition, lower levels of exertion of walking (beta: -5.6, P < 0.001), fear of falling (beta: -34.1, P < 0.001), and higher levels of exercise self-efficacy (beta: 2.3, P = 0.038) were associated with higher levels of PA. Exertion of walking and fear of falling were associated with level of PA independent of mobility.

CONCLUSIONS

Mobility, exertion of walking, fear of falling, and exercise self-efficacy seem to be correlates of level of PA in ambulatory people with SCI during the first year after inpatient rehabilitation. Targeting these factors using an interdisciplinary approach may enhance levels of PA in this population.

Injunctive norms as social pressures: Does autonomy support moderate the relationship between injunctive norms and autonomy satisfaction in physical activity?

Objective: Despite the usefulness of social norms for changing behaviour, injunctive norms (i.e., perceptions of what others approve) from significant others tend to be a weak predictor of physical activity (PA) engagement. A potential explanation is that injunctive norms encompass pressuring social influence that undermines autonomous PA engagement. This study examined whether injunctive norms from significant others undermine individuals' autonomy satisfaction during the pursuit of PA engagement, and whether this effect is moderated by the degree to which significant others offer concurrent autonomy support. Design: Online questionnaires. Measures: Participants' perceptions of injunctive norms and autonomy support from significant others, autonomy satisfaction, behaviour regulation, PA intentions, and weekly PA frequency were assessed at baseline (N = 497) and after two weeks (N = 351). Results: Autonomy support positively related to autonomy satisfaction, whereas injunctive norms were negatively related to autonomy satisfaction. Though the statistical significance of interaction effects was inconsistent across results, simple slopes suggested that the negative relationship between injunctive norms and autonomy satisfaction was attenuated at higher levels of autonomy support in models focusing on influence from parents and friends. Conclusion: When promoting others' PA, communicating direct social expectations/pressures may be ineffective.

Agreement between the activPAL accelerometer and direct observation during a series of gait and sit-to-stand tasks in people living with cervical dystonia

Background

Accelerometers are commonly used for the assessment of PA; however, these devices have not been validated in people with dystonia who experience movement limitations. To properly understand movement behaviors and deliver accurate exercise prescription in this population, the validity of these devices must be tested.

Objective

This study aimed to validate step count and postural transitions detected by the activPAL accelerometer (AP) against direct observation (DO) during two functional assessments: the 30-s sit-to-stand (30STS) and 6-min usual-pace walk tests. Methods: A total of 11 participants with cervical dystonia (CD) (male/female n = 5/6; mean age = 61 years; BMI = 24 kg/m2) performed the 6-min usual pace walking and 30STS while wearing the activPAL. A trained observer counted steps and observed the number of sit-to-stands.

Results

The average step count detected with AP and DO was 651.8 (218-758) and 654.5 (287-798) respectively. The average transitions detected were 11 (4-16) and 12 (4-17) respectively. Both methods showed good agreement and there was a statistically significant and strong correlation between the two methods, i.e., transitions (r = 0.983, p = 0.0001), and step counts (r = 0.9841, p = 0.0001).

Conclusion

There is a good agreement between activPAL and direct observation for step counts and transitions between sitting and standing in people living with CD.

Association Between Physical Activity and Physical Function in a Marshallese Population with Type 2 Diabetes

Physical activity can delay functional decline in people with type 2 diabetes (T2D), but these associations have not been studied within a sample of Native Hawaiian or Pacific Islander adults with T2D. Using data from a randomized control trial in which 218 Marshallese adults with T2D participated in a 10-week diabetes self-management education intervention, this study tested our hypothesis that physical activity would predict physical function when controlling for time and other variables. Levels of physical activity were positively associated with levels of physical function, even after controlling for time and other covariates. These findings provide a more robust understanding of the relationship between physical activity and physical function in a sample of minority adults with T2D. Future studies should further explore levels of physical activity needed to maintain and improve physical function so that culturally appropriate physical activity interventions can be developed.

Identifying latent classes of physical activity profiles over time among adolescents in Ontario, Canada

BACKGROUND

Physical activity behaviours are known to be highly correlated. Adolescents who participate in one type of physical activity (e.g., physical education) have a greater likelihood of participating in other physical activities (e.g., organized sports); however, little research has examined participation rates in various physical activity behaviours concurrently. This study identified longitudinal physical activity profiles among secondary school aged youth in Ontario, Canada.

METHODS

We used data from the COMPASS Study, a school-based prospective cohort study of adolescents in Canada. Using a repeated measures latent class analysis, Ontario students who participated in grade 9 PE in 2015-16 were analysed through to 2018-19 (n = 1,917). Latent classes were defined by: PE participation, guideline adherence (≥ 60 min/day of moderate to vigorous activity over the last 7 days), and sport participation (varsity, community, and/or intramural). Multinomial logistic regression models were used to examine associations between latent class membership and student characteristics.

RESULTS

Three distinct latent classes were identified for females and four were identified for males. These classes were: (1) Guidelines (high probability of guideline adherence; females: 44%; males: 16%), (2) PE & Sports (high probability of PE and sport participation; females: 33%; males: 43%), (3) Guidelines & Sports (high probability of guideline adherence and sport participation; females: 23%; males: 23%;), and (4) Inactive (low probability of all physical activity indicators; males: 18%). Strength training, sleep, and English grade were associated with class membership among females. Ethno-racial identity, weekly spending money, strength training, and English and math grades were associated with class membership among males.

CONCLUSIONS

Findings suggest that latent physical activity profiles differ by sex. Guideline adherence was the most common class among females, indicating high levels of independent physical activity, whereas PE & Sport participation was the most common class among males, indicating greater tendency towards organized activities. Additionally, a substantial number of male students were not engaging in any physical activity. Participation in both PE and sports did not necessarily lead to meeting physical activity guidelines, highlighting that these activities alone may not be providing sufficient levels of physical activity that align with current recommendations for Canadian youth.

Do the associations of daily steps with mortality and incident cardiovascular disease differ by sedentary time levels? A device-based cohort study

OBJECTIVES

This study aims to examine the associations of daily step count with all-cause mortality and incident cardiovascular disease (CVD) by sedentary time levels and to determine if the minimal and optimal number of daily steps is modified by high sedentary time.

METHODS

Using data from the UK Biobank, this was a prospective dose-response analysis of total daily steps across low (<10.5 hours/day) and high (≥10.5 hours/day) sedentary time (as defined by the inflection point of the adjusted absolute risk of sedentary time with the two outcomes). Mortality and incident CVD was ascertained through 31 October 2021.

RESULTS

Among 72 174 participants (age=61.1±7.8 years), 1633 deaths and 6190 CVD events occurred over 6.9 (±0.8) years of follow-up. Compared with the referent 2200 steps/day (5th percentile), the optimal dose (nadir of the curve) for all-cause mortality ranged between 9000 and 10 500 steps/day for high (HR (95% CI)=0.61 (0.51 to 0.73)) and low (0.69 (0.52 to 0.92)) sedentary time. For incident CVD, there was a subtle gradient of association by sedentary time level with the lowest risk observed at approximately 9700 steps/day for high (0.79 (0.72 to 0.86)) and low (0.71 (0.61 to 0.83)) sedentary time. The minimal dose (steps/day associated with 50% of the optimal dose) of daily steps was between 4000 and 4500 steps/day across sedentary time groups for all-cause mortality and incident CVD.

CONCLUSIONS

Any amount of daily steps above the referent 2200 steps/day was associated with lower mortality and incident CVD risk, for low and high sedentary time. Accruing 9000-10 500 steps/day was associated with the lowest mortality risk independent of sedentary time. For a roughly equivalent number of steps/day, the risk of incident CVD was lower for low sedentary time compared with high sedentary time.

Associations between occupational physical activity and left ventricular structure and function over 25 years in CARDIA

AIMS

Leisure time physical activity (LTPA) confers cardiovascular health benefits, while occupational physical activity (OPA) may have paradoxically negative health associations. This study tested the explanatory hypothesis that unfavourable cardiac remodelling may result from chronic OPA-induced cardiovascular strain.

METHODS AND RESULTS

Longitudinal associations of OPA and left ventricular (LV) structure and function were examined in 1462 participants {50.0% female, 56.4% White, aged 30.4 ± 3.4 years at baseline [Year 5 exam (1990-91)]} from the Coronary Artery Risk Development in Young Adults study. Left ventricular structure and function were measured as LV mass (LVMi), end-diastolic volume (LVEDVi), end-systolic volume (LVESVi), ejection fraction (LVEF), stroke volume (LVSVi), and e/a-wave ratio (EA ratio) via echocardiography at baseline and 25 years later. Occupational physical activity was reported at seven exams during the study period as months/year with 'vigorous job activities such as lifting, carrying, or digging' for ≥5 h/week. The 25-year OPA patterns were categorized into three trajectories: no OPA (n = 770), medium OPA (n = 410), and high OPA (n = 282). Linear regression estimated associations between OPA trajectories and echocardiogram variables at follow-up after adjusting for baseline values, individual demographic/health characteristics, and LTPA. Twenty-five-year OPA exposure was not significantly associated with LVMi, LVEDVi, LVSVi, or EA ratio (P > 0.05). However, higher LVESVi (β = 1.84, P < 0.05) and lower LVEF (β = -1.94, P < 0.05) were observed at follow-up among those in the high- vs. no-OPA trajectories.

CONCLUSION

The paradoxically adverse association of OPA with cardiovascular health was partially supported by null or adverse associations between high OPA and echocardiogram outcomes. Confirmation is needed using more precise OPA measures.

Self-reported mid- to late-life physical and recreational activities: Associations with late-life cognition

OBJECTIVE

Physical and recreational activities are behaviors that may modify risk of late-life cognitive decline. We sought to examine the role of retrospectively self-reported midlife (age 40) physical and recreational activity engagement - and self-reported change in these activities from age 40 to initial study visit - in predicting late-life cognition.

METHOD

Data were obtained from 898 participants in a longitudinal study of cognitive aging in demographically and cognitively diverse older adults (Age: range = 49-93 years, M = 75, SD = 7.19). Self-reported physical and recreational activity participation at age 40 and at the initial study visit were quantified using the Life Experiences Assessment Form. Change in activities was modeled using latent change scores. Cognitive outcomes were obtained annually (range = 2-17 years) using the Spanish and English Neuropsychological Assessment Scales, which measure verbal episodic memory, semantic memory, visuospatial processing, and executive functioning.

RESULTS

Physical activity engagement at age 40 was strongly associated with cognitive performance in all four domains at the initial visit and with global cognitive slope. However, change in physical activities after age 40 was not associated with cognitive outcomes. In contrast, recreational activity engagement - both at age 40 and change after 40 - was predictive of cognitive intercepts and slope.

CONCLUSIONS

Retrospectively self-reported midlife physical and recreational activity engagement were strongly associated with late-life cognition - both level of performance and rate of future decline. However, the data suggest that maintenance of recreational activity engagement (e.g., writing, taking classes, reading) after age 40 is more strongly associated with late-life cognition than continued maintenance of physical activity levels.

Physical activity and odds of coronary heart disease among Lebanese women

BACKGROUND

It is known that physical activity (PA) is protective against cardiovascular morbidity and mortality. However, few studies have examined the association between PA, sedentary lifestyle and coronary heart disease (CHD) in women. This case-control study investigates the relationship between PA and sedentary behavior on CHD odds in Lebanese women over forty.

METHODS

One thousand five hundred selected Lebanese women (300 cases and 1200 controls) were included between 2018-2019. Cases were hospitalized women newly diagnosed with CHD, whereas the control groups were free of any heart diseases. Data on socio-demographic, lifestyle, cardiovascular factors, PA and sedentary lifestyle were collected. Multivariate logistic regressions, adjusted for covariates, were performed to investigate the association of PA domains and sedentary behavior with CHD.

RESULTS

A sedentary lifestyle combined with low activity levels increased the odds of CHD. Among cases, 46.7% participated in moderate or vigorous PA against almost 60.3% of controls. 36.3% of coronary patients had more than 10 h/day of sedentary time, with a positive correlation with CHD (adjusted OR: 1.533, 95%CI: 1.046-2.247). Conversely, moderate and high levels (respectively 600-3000 and ≥ 3000 metabolic equivalents [MET]-minutes/week) of domestic/garden PA revealed lower CHD odds (OR: 0.566, 95%CI: 0.396-0.808 and 0.193, 0.065-0.578 respectively). The detrimental influence of sedentary lifestyle appeared to be significantly reversed by weekly moderate PA, especially as weekly sedentary time was less (OR: 0.616, 95%CI: 0.427-0.888/ 6 to10h of sedentary time and OR: 0.537, 95% CI: 0.37-0.779/ ≤ 6 h), and except sedentary time exceeding 10 h daily. Two PA patterns revealed lower CHD odds: transport-related and domestic/garden PA, as early as low amount, even after adjustment for possible confounders.

CONCLUSION

The current study highlights the importance of combating sedentary behaviors and engaging in regular, easily accessible PA to reduce the odds of coronary disease among aging women. Therefore, better information regarding the benefits of physical activities such as transportation-related activities or gardening would be helpful in enhancing the prevention of CHD in aging women.

Wearable Technology to Capture Arm Use of People With Stroke in Home and Community Settings: Feasibility and Early Insights on Motor Performance

OBJECTIVE

The objectives of this study were to establish the short-term feasibility and usability of wrist-worn wearable sensors for capturing the arm and hand activity of people with stroke and to explore the association between factors related to the use of the paretic arm and hand.

METHODS

Thirty people with chronic stroke were monitored with wrist-worn wearable sensors for 12 hours per day for a 7-day period. Participants also completed standardized assessments to capture stroke severity, arm motor impairments, self-perceived arm use, and self-efficacy. The usability of the wearable sensors was assessed using the adapted System Usability Scale and an exit interview. Associations between motor performance and capacity (arm and hand impairments and activity limitations) were assessed using Spearman correlations.

RESULTS

Minimal technical issues or lack of adherence to the wearing schedule occurred, with 87.6% of days procuring valid data from both sensors. The average sensor wear time was 12.6 (standard deviation [SD] = 0.2) hours per day. Three participants experienced discomfort with 1 of the wristbands, and 3 other participants had unrelated adverse events. There were positive self-reported usability scores (mean = 85.4/100) and high user satisfaction. Significant correlations were observed for measures of motor capacity and self-efficacy with paretic arm use in the home and the community (Spearman correlation coefficients = 0.44-0.71).

CONCLUSIONS

This work demonstrates the feasibility and usability of a consumer-grade wearable sensor for capturing paretic arm activity outside the laboratory. It provides early insight into the everyday arm use of people with stroke and related factors, such as motor capacity and self-efficacy.

IMPACT

The integration of wearable technologies into clinical practice offers new possibilities to complement in-person clinical assessments and to better understand how each person is moving outside of therapy and throughout the recovery and reintegration phase. Insight gained from monitoring the arm and hand use of people with stroke in the home and community is the first step toward informing future research with an emphasis on causal mechanisms with clinical relevance.

Accelerometer-based physical activity is associated with the gut microbiota in 8416 individuals in SCAPIS

BACKGROUND

Previous population-based studies investigating the relationship between physical activity and the gut microbiota have relied on self-reported activity, prone to reporting bias. Here, we investigated the associations of accelerometer-based sedentary (SED), moderate-intensity (MPA), and vigorous-intensity (VPA) physical activity with the gut microbiota using cross-sectional data from the Swedish CArdioPulmonary bioImage Study.

METHODS

In 8416 participants aged 50-65, time in SED, MPA, and VPA were estimated with hip-worn accelerometer. Gut microbiota was profiled using shotgun metagenomics of faecal samples. We applied multivariable regression models, adjusting for sociodemographic, lifestyle, and technical covariates, and accounted for multiple testing.

FINDINGS

Overall, associations between time in SED and microbiota species abundance were in opposite direction to those for MPA or VPA. For example, MPA was associated with lower, while SED with higher abundance of Escherichia coli. MPA and VPA were associated with higher abundance of the butyrate-producers Faecalibacterium prausnitzii and Roseburia spp. We observed discrepancies between specific VPA and MPA associations, such as a positive association between MPA and Prevotella copri, while no association was detected for VPA. Additionally, SED, MPA and VPA were associated with the functional potential of the microbiome. For instance, MPA was associated with higher capacity for acetate synthesis and SED with lower carbohydrate degradation capacity.

INTERPRETATION

Our findings suggest that sedentary and physical activity are associated with a similar set of gut microbiota species but in opposite directions. Furthermore, the intensity of physical activity may have specific effects on certain gut microbiota species.

Cognitive Job Demands and Sports Participation among Young Workers: What Moderates the Relationship?

Cognitive job demands are theoretically and empirically associated with sports participation in various ways. Workers may be overwhelmed by stress and fatigue from their workload and therefore refrain from sports activities, but they can also feel the need to use sports as a way to recover and detach from work. The strategy to which workers adhere can depend on workers' resources that moderate the cognitive job demands and sports participation relationship, such as educational attainment, being a parent, or having worktime and work location control. To test our expectations, we used recent information on sports participation by young working adults from the Netherlands (N = 2032). Using multinomial logistic regression modelling, we found that workers in mentally demanding jobs were more likely to participate in sports more than three times a week. In particular, workers without children reported a higher likelihood of participating in sports more than three times a week when they experienced high cognitive job demands. Among the higher-educated, workers with high cognitive job demands were less likely to participate in sports one to three times a week. We reflect on the academic and policy-related implications of our findings.

The Push Forward in Rehabilitation: Validation of a Machine Learning Method for Detection of Wheelchair Propulsion Type

Within rehabilitation, there is a great need for a simple method to monitor wheelchair use, especially whether it is active or passive. For this purpose, an existing measurement technique was extended with a method for detecting self- or attendant-pushed wheelchair propulsion. The aim of this study was to validate this new detection method by comparison with manual annotation of wheelchair use. Twenty-four amputation and stroke patients completed a semi-structured course of active and passive wheelchair use. Based on a machine learning approach, a method was developed that detected the type of movement. The machine learning method was trained based on the data of a single-wheel sensor as well as a setup using an additional sensor on the frame. The method showed high accuracy (F1 = 0.886, frame and wheel sensor) even if only a single wheel sensor was used (F1 = 0.827). The developed and validated measurement method is ideally suited to easily determine wheelchair use and the corresponding activity level of patients in rehabilitation.

Adherence to the World Cancer Research Fund/American Institute for Cancer Research recommendations for cancer prevention in adolescent and young adult (AYA) cancer survivors: results from the SURVAYA study

PURPOSE

For adolescent and young adult (AYA) cancer survivors with a good prognosis, having a healthy lifestyle prevents morbidity and mortality after treatment. The aim of this study was to investigate the prevalence of (un)healthy lifestyle behaviors and related determinants in AYA cancer survivors.

METHODS

A population-based, cross-sectional study was performed among long-term (5-20 years) AYA cancer survivors (18-39 years old at diagnosis) registered within the Netherlands Cancer Registry. Self-reported questionnaires data about health behaviors were used to calculate the 2018 World Cancer Research Fund/American Institute for Cancer Research (WCRF/AICR) adherence score. Associations between the score and clinical/sociodemographic determinants of (un)healthy behaviors were investigated using logistic regression models.

RESULTS

The mean WCRF/AICR score was low to moderate, 3.8 ± 1.2 (0.5-7.0) (n = 3668). Sixty-one percent adhered to "limit the consumption of sugar sweetened drinks," 28% to "be a healthy weight," 25% to "fruit and vegetable consumption," and 31% to "limit alcohol consumption." Moderate and high adherence were associated with being a woman (ORmoderate = 1.46, 95% CI = 1.14-1.85, and ORhigh = 1.87, 95% CI = 1.46-2.4) and highly educated (ORmoderate = 1.54, 95% CI = 1.30-1.83, and ORhigh = 1.87, 95% CI = 1.46-2.4). Low adherence was associated with smoking (ORmoderate = 0.68, 95% CI = 0.50-0.92, and ORhigh = 0.30, 95% CI = 0.21-0.44) and diagnosis of germ cell tumor (ORmoderate = 0.58, 95% CI = 0.39-0.86, and ORhigh = 0.45, 95% CI = 0.30-0.69).

CONCLUSIONS

Adherence to the 2018 WCRF/AICR lifestyle recommendations was low to moderate, especially regarding body weight, fruit, vegetables, and alcohol consumption. Men, current smokers, lower-educated participants, and/or those diagnosed with germ cell tumors were less likely to have a healthy lifestyle.

IMPLICATIONS FOR CANCER SURVIVORS

Health-promotion programs (e.g., age-specific tools) are needed, focusing on high-risk groups.

Comparing Self-Reported Running Distance and Pace With a Commercial Fitness Watch Data: Reliability Study

BACKGROUND

There is substantial evidence exploring the reliability of running distance self-reporting and GPS wearable technology, but there are currently no studies investigating the reliability of participant self-reporting in comparison to GPS wearable technology. There is also a critical sports science and medical research gap due to a paucity of reliability studies assessing self-reported running pace.

OBJECTIVE

The purpose of this study was to assess the reliability of weekly self-reported running distance and pace compared to a commercial GPS fitness watch, stratified by sex and age. These data will give clinicians and sports researchers insights into the reliability of runners' self-reported pace, which may improve training designs and rehabilitation prescriptions.

METHODS

A prospective study of recreational runners was performed. Weekly running distance and average running pace were captured through self-report and a fitness watch. Baseline characteristics collected included age and sex. Intraclass correlational coefficients were calculated for weekly running distance and running pace for self-report and watch data. Bland-Altman plots assessed any systemic measurement error. Analyses were then stratified by sex and age.

RESULTS

Younger runners reported improved weekly distance reliability (median 0.93, IQR 0.92-0.94). All ages demonstrated similar running pace reliability. Results exhibited no discernable systematic bias.

CONCLUSIONS

Weekly self-report demonstrated good reliability for running distance and moderate reliability for running pace in comparison to the watch data. Similar reliability was observed for male and female participants. Younger runners demonstrated improved running distance reliability, but all age groups exhibited similar pace reliability. Running pace potentially should be monitored through technological means to increase precision.

The role of social support in the relationship between physical activity and health-related quality of life among adults with visual impairments

BACKGROUND

Studies support assertions that more social support may be related to higher physical activity behavior, which may, in turn, relate to higher health-related quality of life (HRQoL). However, these relationships remain unexplored, particularly among adults with visual impairments.

OBJECTIVE

The purpose of this study was to examine the relationships between physical activity-specific social support, physical activity participation, and HRQoL among adults with visual impairments.

METHODS

This cross-sectional study utilized an online survey methodology. Adults with visual impairments (n = 251) were recruited via three visual impairment LISTSERVs housed in the USA and completed four questionnaires. Data were analyzed using (a) a descriptive analysis, (b) one sample t-test, and (c) structural equation modeling to examine the relations among social support, physical activity, and HRQoL components.

RESULTS

The participants reported relatively low weekly physical activity participation, with mean physical activity about 1362.02 ± 1231.37 MET-min/week. Compared to the mean T-scores of the general adult US population, the participants had significantly lower physical (43.56 ± 6.76, t = -15.10, p < .01) and mental components of HRQoL (38.24 ± 11.37, t = -16.39, p < .01). Structural equational modeling results show that social support positively predicted weekly physical activity participation (β = 0.11), which, in turn, predicted physical component (β = 0.12) but not mental component HRQoL (β = 0.04, p > .05).

CONCLUSIONS

Our participant sample reported significantly lower HRQoL than the general US populations. The findings suggest that social support can both directly and indirectly, through physical activity, influence psychological HRQoL among adults with visual impairments.

Effect of Tele-exercise to Promote Empowered Movement for Individuals With Spinal Cord Injury (TEEMS) Program on Physical Activity Determinants and Behavior: A Mixed Methods Assessment

OBJECTIVE

To assess the effects of group tele-exercise participation on physical activity (PA) determinants and behavior as identified by social cognitive theory (SCT) in individuals with spinal cord injury (SCI).

DESIGN

This clinically registered non-randomized trial [NCT05360719] used a single-group parallel mixed methods design. Quantitative and qualitative primary measures were assessed at pre-program and after 8-week intervention completion (post-program), with an additional 8-week period retention to capture quantitative assessments only.

SETTING

Community.

PARTICIPANTS

Individuals with chronic SCI (N=22, injury duration 2-50 years) aged 26-68 years (10 male/12 female).

INTERVENTION

An 8-week group tele-exercise program for individuals with SCI consisting of biweekly 60-minute classes delivered via live Web-conferencing software.

MAIN OUTCOME MEASURES

Exercise self-efficacy (Exercise Self-efficacy Scale for SCI: ESES), outcome expectations for exercise (Multidimensional Outcome Expectations for Exercise: MOEES), weekly PA minutes measured through quantitative assessments (Leisure Time PA Questionnaire for SCI: LTPAQ), and parallel qualitative thematic analysis of focus group interview transcripts.

RESULTS

Congruence between numeric and thematic findings was present for exercise self-efficacy and self-evaluative exercise outcome expectations. Improved exercise self-efficacy was influenced by exercise knowledge gained during program participation. Increased expectations of internal exercise outcomes, such as influence on psychological state and overall mood, occurred after program participation. Participant descriptions of the portability and sustainability of the program leading to added movement in everyday life were not reflected in the numeric scores of LTPAQ assessment.

CONCLUSIONS

Participation in an 8-week group tele-exercise program positively affected personal determinants of PA behavior immediately after participation. Future investigations should include a control group and biophysical PA measures such as wearable digital health devices.

Temporal Sequencing of Naturalistic Associations Between Body Satisfaction and Physical Activity: An Ecological Momentary Assessment Study Among Women in Midlife With Elevated Cardiovascular Risk

The goal of the present study was to examine naturalistic associations between body satisfaction and physical activity (PA) among women in midlife. Women 40-60 years of age with cardiovascular risk factors (e.g., hypertension; N = 75; Mage = 51.63) responded to five surveys per day for 10 days while accelerometer-derived PA measurements were collected continuously. PA parameters included cognitive determinants (PA motivation and intentions) and accelerometer-measured PA behavior (sedentary behavior, light-intensity PA, and moderate to vigorous PA). Multilevel models indicated that associations between body satisfaction and everyday PA differed across PA determinants, time frames (concurrent and prospective), and levels (momentary, daily, and person). For example, positive bidirectional associations were identified between women's daily body satisfaction and PA motivation, whereas greater momentary light-intensity PA (but not moderate to vigorous PA) was unidirectionally associated with greater body satisfaction at a subsequent prompt. These findings provide insight into how associations between body satisfaction and PA unfold in the daily lives of women in midlife and highlight the complexities of these associations.

Baseline Comparison of Exercisers and Nonexercisers With Spinal Cord Injury Enrolled in a Group Tele-Exercise Program

Background

Individuals with SCI are 1.5 times more likely to be sedentary compared to adults without disabilities or chronic health conditions. It is therefore imperative to develop and evaluate innovative facilitation strategies for physical activity behavior in this population.

Objectives

As an insightful step to creating and evaluating tailored physical activity interventions for individuals with SCI, we evaluated demographic, psychosocial, and physical characteristics of those who choose to engage in physical activity by enrolling in a group exercise study.

Design/Methods

We conducted a cross-sectional analysis detailing demographic features and baseline outcomes of those with SCI enrolled in a group tele-exercise study who were classified as regular exercisers versus nonregular exercisers per the American College of Sports Medicine exercise guidelines. Between-group differences for psychosocial and physical outcomes were assessed with chi-square and Mann-Whitney U tests (p < .05).

Results

Twenty-seven adult volunteers enrolled in the study (exercisers = 14, nonexercisers = 13). Groups were comparable for biological sex, gender identity, self-reported racial group(s), and current age. Exercisers demonstrated significantly shorter duration of injury compared to nonexercisers (p = .012). Exercisers exhibited significantly higher exercise self-efficacy (p = .017) and increased reported weekly minutes in vigorous intensity leisure time physical activity (p = .029).

Conclusion

Nonexercisers with SCI demonstrate increased injury duration and reduced exercise self-efficacy compared to active peers. These factors should be addressed in the design and delivery of SCI-specific physical activity interventions to increase the likelihood of this critical health behavior over time.

Can the bias of self-reported sitting time be corrected? A statistical model validation study based on data from 23 993 adults in the Norwegian HUNT study

BACKGROUND

Despite apparent shortcomings such as measurement error and low precision, self-reported sedentary time is still widely used in surveillance and research. The aim of this study was threefold; (i) to examine the agreement between self-reported and device-measured sitting time in a general adult population; (ii), to examine to what extent demographics, lifestyle factors, long-term health conditions, physical work demands, and educational level is associated with measurement bias; and (iii), to explore whether correcting for factors associated with bias improves the prediction of device-measured sitting time based on self-reported sitting time.

METHODS

A statistical validation model study based on data from 23 993 adults in the Trøndelag Health Study (HUNT4), Norway. Participants reported usual sitting time on weekdays using a single-item questionnaire and wore two AX3 tri-axial accelerometers on the thigh and low back for an average of 3.8 (standard deviation [SD] 0.7, range 1-5) weekdays to determine their sitting time. Statistical validation was performed by iteratively adding all possible combinations of factors associated with bias between self-reported and device-measured sitting time in a multivariate linear regression. We randomly selected 2/3 of the data (n = 15 995) for model development and used the remaining 1/3 (n = 7 998) to evaluate the model.

RESULTS

Mean (SD) self-reported and device-measured sitting time were 6.8 (2.9) h/day and 8.6 (2.2) h/day, respectively, corresponding to a mean difference of 1.8 (3.1) h/day. Limits of agreement ranged from - 8.0 h/day to 4.4 h/day. The discrepancy between the measurements was characterized by a proportional bias with participants device-measured to sit less overestimating their sitting time and participants device-measured to sit more underestimating their sitting time. The crude explained variance of device-measured sitting time based on self-reported sitting time was 10%. This improved to 24% when adding age, body mass index and physical work demands to the model. Adding sex, lifestyle factors, educational level, and long-term health conditions to the model did not improve the explained variance.

CONCLUSIONS

Self-reported sitting time had low validity and including a range of factors associated with bias in self-reported sitting time only marginally improved the prediction of device-measured sitting time.

Impact of anthropometric data and physical activity level on the closed kinetic chain upper extremity stability test (CKCUEST) score: A cross-sectional study

OBJECTIVE

The aim of this study was to evaluate the impact of anthropometric data and the level of physical activity on the CKCUEST score on uninjured subjects.

METHOD

Subjects were eligible for the study if they were aged between 18 and 25 years old. Anthropometric data were collected, and the physical activity level was assessed using the Global Physical Activity Questionnaire (GPAQ). The primary endpoint was the CKCUEST score. The CKCUEST was performed three times and the score was the mean of the 3 tries. The compared groups were posteriori dichotomized according to the median. A multivariate model has been built by step-by-step selection with a threshold set at 0.05.

RESULTS

82 subjects were included. The difference between groups determined for each variable was statistically significant for CKCUEST score (p < 0.0001) and for physical activity level (p = 0.0245). The multivariate analysis showed that arm span, sex and weight are, in order, three main variables influencing the CKCUEST score. A predictive equation was established based on these 3 factors (R2 = 0.51).

CONCLUSION

The CKCUEST score seems to be impacted by sex, weight and arm span. A predictive equation for the CKCUEST score was proposed: (0.271 × Upper Limb Span)-(0.103 × Weight)-(3.219 × Sex)-17.719.

Accelerometry Measured Movement Behaviors in Middle-Aged and Older Adults: Cross-Sectional Analysis of the ELSA-Brasil Study

BACKGROUND

Little investigation of accelerometry assessed movement behaviors and physical inactivity was carried out in middle-aged and older adults in low-middle-income countries.

OBJECTIVE

Describe accelerometry-measured movement behaviors and prevalence of physical inactivity in middle-aged and older adults.

METHODS

We collected raw accelerometry data during the third visit (2017-2019) of ELSA-Brasil, a large-scale multicenter Brazilian cohort. Participants wore an ActiGraph wGT3X-BT on the waist for 24 hours for 7 days and documented sleep in a diary.

RESULTS

Nine thousand two hundred and seventy-nine participants had valid data (73.4% of the eligible cohort). Overall activity was higher for men (11.82mg; 95% confidence interval [CI], 11.7 to 11.93) than women (10.69mg; 95% CI, 10.6 to 10.77) and lower in older groups-women (-0.12mg/y; 95% CI, -0.13 to -0.11), men (-0.16mg/y; 95% CI, -0.17 to -0.14). Participants were more active from noon to midnight. Distribution of movement behaviors varied with sex and age, and sleep duration was longer in older individuals. Overall, 14.4% (95% CI, 13.7 to 15.1) were inactive, with inactivity being more frequent in women (16.4%; 95% CI, 15.4 to 17.4) than men (12.2%; 95% CI, 11 to 13). Higher rates were observed in the oldest. Retirement was associated with a higher prevalence of physical inactivity in both sexes.

CONCLUSION

Women were less active than men. Older individuals showed a high prevalence of physical inactivity, probably related to transition into retirement. These findings strengthen evidence for public policies promoting physical activity by emphasizing the need to target women, older individuals, and those transitioning to retirement to improve and/or maintain physical activity levels throughout the course of their lives.

Personality traits and risk of eating disorders among Polish women: the moderating role of self-esteem

Objectives

Personality traits should be taken into account when diagnosing individuals with disordered eating behaviors in the hope of better understanding their etiology and symptom progression and when planning treatment. The objective of this study was to attempt to determine the moderating role of self-esteem in the relationships between personality traits included in the Big Five model among Polish women and estimated risk of eating disorders.

Methods

The study was conducted among 556 Polish women from Zachodniopomorskie Voivodeship. The average age of the women under study was 34 years. A diagnostic survey was used as the research method, and the empirical data were collected using the following research tools: The NEO Five-Factor Inventory (NEO-FFI), Rosenberg Self-Esteem Scale (SES), ORTO - 15 Questionnaire, The Three-Factor Eating Questionnaire (TFEQ-13), and the authors' original questionnaire. A multivariate linear regression analysis was conducted to examine the influence of selected independent variables. The assumptions for the linear regression model were satisfied, as indicated by the Ramsey Regression Equation Specification Error Test, White's test, and the Jarque-Bera test.

Results

Only the personality trait of neuroticism exhibits a statistically significant effect on the "Cognitive Restraint of Eating," "Uncontrolled Eating," and "Emotional Eating" scores (p < 0.001). The moderation effect was demonstrated between self-esteem and the personality trait of conscientiousness on the "Cognitive Restraint of Eating" scale score. There is a moderation effect between self-esteem and the personality trait of extraversion on the "Uncontrolled Eating" subscale score. There is a moderation effect between self-esteem and the personality trait of conscientiousness on the "Uncontrolled Eating" scale score.

Conclusion

Self-esteem was not a predictor of the occurrence of risk of eating disorders while playing a moderating role in the relationship between certain personality traits and estimated risk of eating disorders. A higher level of neuroticism was identified as an important predictor of higher results for orthorexia, Cognitive Restraint of Eating, Uncontrolled Eating, and Emotional Eating. It was also demonstrated that the orthorexia risk index decreased with increased extraversion and openness to experience. The results of this study suggest that eating behaviors and psychological factors should be included in psychological interventions in the treatment of eating disorders. The clinical goal can be considered to be an improvement in non-normative eating behaviors, such as a reduction in overeating episodes or eating less frequently in the absence of a hunger feeling. In order to assist these individuals in their attempts to achieve healthy behaviors, variables related to mental functioning can be then identified as important goals to support individuals in their efforts to change health behaviors by achieving better mental well-being.

Evaluating the Effects of Rewards and Schedule Length on Response Rates to Ecological Momentary Assessment Surveys: Randomized Controlled Trials

BACKGROUND

Ecological momentary assessments (EMAs) are short, repeated surveys designed to collect information on experiences in real-time, real-life contexts. Embedding periodic bursts of EMAs within cohort studies enables the study of experiences on multiple timescales and could greatly enhance the accuracy of self-reported information. However, the burden on participants may be high and should be minimized to optimize EMA response rates.

OBJECTIVE

We aimed to evaluate the effects of study design features on EMA response rates.

METHODS

Embedded within an ongoing cohort study (Health@NUS), 3 bursts of EMAs were implemented over a 7-month period (April to October 2021). The response rate (percentage of completed EMA surveys from all sent EMA surveys; 30-42 individual EMA surveys sent/burst) for each burst was examined. Following a low response rate in burst 1, changes were made to the subsequent implementation strategy (SMS text message announcements instead of emails). In addition, 2 consecutive randomized controlled trials were conducted to evaluate the efficacy of 4 different reward structures (with fixed and bonus components) and 2 different schedule lengths (7 or 14 d) on changes to the EMA response rate. Analyses were conducted from 2021 to 2022 using ANOVA and analysis of covariance to examine group differences and mixed models to assess changes across all 3 bursts.

RESULTS

Participants (N=384) were university students (n=232, 60.4% female; mean age 23, SD 1.3 y) in Singapore. Changing the reward structure did not significantly change the response rate (F3,380=1.75; P=.16). Changing the schedule length did significantly change the response rate (F1,382=6.23; P=.01); the response rate was higher for the longer schedule (14 d; mean 48.34%, SD 33.17%) than the shorter schedule (7 d; mean 38.52%, SD 33.44%). The average response rate was higher in burst 2 and burst 3 (mean 50.56, SD 33.61 and mean 48.34, SD 33.17, respectively) than in burst 1 (mean 25.78, SD 30.12), and the difference was statistically significant (F2,766=93.83; P<.001).

CONCLUSIONS

Small changes to the implementation strategy (SMS text messages instead of emails) may have contributed to increasing the response rate over time. Changing the available rewards did not lead to a significant difference in the response rate, whereas changing the schedule length did lead to a significant difference in the response rate. Our study provides novel insights on how to implement EMA surveys in ongoing cohort studies. This knowledge is essential for conducting high-quality studies using EMA surveys.

Association between adverse childhood experiences and fruit and vegetable intake among a national sample of U.S. adults

Few studies have examined the role adverse childhood experiences (ACEs) have on specific diet patterns. This study assessed the association between ACEs and daily fruit and vegetable intake (FVI). Data were derived from the 2019 Behavioral Risk Factor Surveillance System (BRFSS) which surveys 50 states and three U.S. territories. Participants who completed the ACEs module were included in the analyses (N = 106,967). Total ACEs included the summed responses from the domains of abuse, household challenges, and neglect. FVI was reported by number of times consumed per day. The two fruit items included fruit (fresh, frozen, and canned) and fruit juice. The four vegetable items included leafy greens, fried potatoes, non-fried potatoes, and other vegetables. All fruit and vegetable items were analyzed separately to see which specific items drove the relationship between total ACEs and total FVI, equaling a total of 8 regression models. Every model controlled for poor mental health days, sex, age, ethnicity, income, body mass index, and physical activity. Total ACEs were positively associated with daily intake of fried potatoes (β = 0.008, p =.025), other potatoes (β = 0.008, p =.049), and other vegetables (β = 0.024, p <.001). Total ACEs were negatively associated with daily intake of fruit (β = -0.016, p <.001). ACEs had non-significant relationships with leafy greens and fruit juice. Findings suggests that those with increased ACEs scores report increased consumption of fried potatoes, non-fried potatoes, and other vegetables, and less of fruit. Findings highlight the need for understanding food context and preparation when analyzing the relationship between ACEs and diet intake.

Leisure-time physical activity and mortality from influenza and pneumonia: a cohort study of 577 909 US adults

OBJECTIVE

To examine the association of leisure-time physical activity with mortality from influenza and pneumonia.

METHODS

A nationally representative sample of US adults (aged ≥18 years) who participated in the National Health Interview Survey from 1998 to 2018 were followed for mortality through 2019. Participants were classified as meeting both physical activity guidelines if they reported ≥150 min/week of moderate-intensity equivalent aerobic physical activity and ≥2 episodes/week of muscle-strengthening activity. Participants were also classified into five volume-based categories of self-reported aerobic and muscle-strengthening activity. Influenza and pneumonia mortality was defined as having an underlying cause of death with an International Classification of Diseases, 10th Revision code of J09-J18 recorded in the National Death Index. Mortality risk was assessed using Cox proportional hazards, adjusting for sociodemographic and lifestyle factors, health conditions and influenza and pneumococcal vaccination status. Data were analysed in 2022.

RESULTS

Among 577 909 participants followed for a median of 9.23 years, 1516 influenza and pneumonia deaths were recorded. Compared with participants meeting neither guideline, those meeting both guidelines had 48% lower adjusted risk of influenza and pneumonia mortality. Relative to no aerobic activity, 10-149, 150-300, 301-600 and >600 min/week were associated with lower risk (by 21%, 41%, 50% and 41%). Relative to <2 episodes/week of muscle-strengthening activity, 2 episodes/week was associated with 47% lower risk and ≥7 episodes/week with 41% higher risk.

CONCLUSIONS

Aerobic physical activity, even at quantities below the recommended level, may be associated with lower influenza and pneumonia mortality while muscle-strengthening activity demonstrated a J-shaped relationship.

Validation of the LPA-SQUASH in post-liver-transplant patients

AIM

This study aimed to validate the revised Short Questionnaire to Assess Health-Enhancing Physical Activity (SQUASH) to measure sedentary activity in post-liver-transplant patients. The proposed scale could be useful for transplantation nurses to assess and modify sedentary lifestyles and increase physical activity.

METHODS

The SQUASH was modified to include items on sitting time and light-intensity physical activity (LPA-SQUASH). A pilot study was conducted with 20 liver transplant patients, and an expert panel validated the scale contents. Then, post-liver-transplant outpatients at a Japanese university hospital participated in the main study (September-October 2020), in which questionnaires were mailed twice to assess test-retest reliability, and accelerometers used to establish criterion validity. Intra-class correlation coefficients (ICC) were calculated for test-retest reliability. Spearman correlations and Bland-Altman plots were used to assess validity and measurement error.

RESULTS

In total, 173 participants returned the questionnaires, and 106 and 71 completed the reliability and validation studies, respectively. The range of LPA-SQUASH correlation coefficients for test-retest was .49-.58. ICCs ranged from .72 to .80 for items other than leisure. Accelerometer data and the LPA-SQUASH total physical activity amount and light-intensity physical activity correlated moderately.

CONCLUSION

We modified the SQUASH, which was developed to measure physical activity in healthy adults, to assess light-intensity physical activity in post-liver-transplant patients. The LPA-SQUASH showed acceptable validity and reliability. The questionnaire may be used by transplantation nurses to examine light-intensity physical activity content/duration, deliver patient education considering patients' sedentary lifestyle, and facilitate goal setting for physical activity interventions to prevent metabolic syndrome.
