Abstract
Attention-deficit/hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) and autism spectrum disorders (ASD) are strongly associated with educational attainment (EA), but little is known about their genetic relationship with school performance and whether these links are explained, in part, by the genetic liability of EA. Here, we aim to dissect the polygenic contribution of ADHD and ASD to school performance, early manifestation of psychopathology and other psychiatric disorders and related traits by their relationship with EA. To do so, we tested the association of polygenic scores for EA, ADHD and ASD with school performance, assessed whether the contribution of the genetic liability of ADHD and ASD to school performance is influenced by the genetic liability of EA, and evaluated the role of EA in the genetic overlap between ADHD and ASD with early manifestation of psychopathology and other psychiatric disorders and related traits in a sample of 4,278 school-age children. The genetic liability for ADHD and ASD dissected by their relationship with EA show differences in their association with school performance and early manifestation of psychopathology, partly mediated by ADHD and ASD symptoms. Genetic variation with concordant effects in ASD and EA contributes to better school performance, while the genetic variation with discordant effects in ADHD or ASD and EA is associated with poor school performance and higher rates of emotional and behavioral problems. Our results strongly support the usage of the genetic load for EA to dissect the genetic and phenotypic heterogeneity of ADHD and ASD, which could help to fill the gap of knowledge of mechanisms underlying educational outcomes.

Abstract
INTRODUCTION Attention deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) is a childhood-onset neurodevelopmental condition characterised by inattention and/or hyperactivity-impulsivity. The ADHD symptoms are often evaluated and quantified using various assessment tools, such as the Conners' Continuous Performance Test II (CCPT-II), ADHD Rating Scale (ADHD-RS), Child Behaviour Checklist (CBCL), Clinical Global Assessment Scale (CGAS) and Clinical Global Impression Scale (CGIS). This study sought to compare CCPT-II with parent- and clinician-rated rating scales (ADHD-RS, CBCL, CGAS and CGIS) in measuring the core ADHD symptoms within the paediatric ADHD population. METHODS The data, gathered from a large-scale randomised controlled trial involving 172 children aged 6-12 years with ADHD, was pooled, and a Pearson correlation analysis was conducted. RESULTS No significant correlations were observed between CCPT-II and ADHD-RS, as well as the various subscales of CBCL, CGAS and CGIS. CONCLUSION While CCPT-II may offer insights into ADHD symptomatology, its relationship with parent- and clinician-rated rating scales such as ADHD-RS, CBCL, CGAS and CGIS appears limited. Further research is warranted to elucidate the nuances of these assessment tools and their roles in evaluating ADHD.

Abstract
Introduction Attention-deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) is a neuropsychiatric condition that affects children. Its magnitude varies by area, ranging from 0.2% to 26.8%. Even though there is debate, culture and geographical location may have little or no influence on the epidemiology of ADHD worldwide. Despite this variation, debate over the national prevalence and location of ADHD is unknown in Ethiopia. Therefore, this study aimed to assess the pooled prevalence of ADHD and its contributing factors among children. Methods Electronic databases, including Google Scholar, PubMed, Scopus, EMBASE, Web of Science, ScienceDirect, and institutional repositories, were searched. The studies that covered the prevalence and/or risk factors of ADHD in children were included in the collection. The Joanna Briggs Institute quality rating tool was used to rate the quality of each study. The data were extracted using Microsoft Excel 2019, and the statistical analysis was performed using STATA 17.0. Using a random-effects model, we evaluated the combined prevalence of ADHD and associated factors. The Cochrane Q-test and I 2 test statistics were used to quantify the heterogeneity. Furthermore, publication bias was examined using funnel plot graphs and Egger's tests. A Galbraith plot was employed to illustrate outliers. Sensitivity analysis was also applied. Result This study included a total of six articles with 4,338 participants. The pooled prevalence estimate of ADHD was 8.81% [95% confidence interval (CI), 4.52-13.11; I 2 = 96.95%; P = 0.001]. Age 6-12 [adjusted odds ratio (AOR) = 3.51 (95% CI, 1.38-5.64), I 2 = 0%; P = 0.001], being male [AOR = 1.94 (95% CI, 1.09-2.79), I 2 = 0%; P = 0.001], and living with a single parent [AOR = 4.92 (95% CI, 1.24-861), I 2 = 0%; P = 0.001] were significant variables. Conclusion and recommendation One out of every 12 children in Ethiopia suffers from ADHD. Living with a single parent, being male, and being between the ages of 6 and 12 were risk factors for ADHD. A nationwide study with a large sample size may be required to ascertain the true impact of ADHD. It may be crucial to improve school health services to identify ADHD early and lessen its long-term effects.

Abstract
Reading proficiency is important because it has life-long consequences and influences success in other academic areas. Many students with behavior problems are poor readers and many students with learning disabilities have more behavior problems than their typical peers. We conducted a correlational meta-analysis to examine the association between reading and externalizing behavior in students ages 5-12. We identified 33 studies that reported 88 effect sizes. Using a random-effects linear regression model with robust variance estimation, we found a significant, negative correlation (r= -0.1698, SE = 0.01, p < 0.0001) between reading and externalizing behavior. We tested several moderators related to measurement and sample characteristics. We found that rater type, behavior dimension (e.g., aggression), time between longitudinal measurement points, age of the sample, and percentage male of the sample moderated the relation between reading and behavior. Whether the reading assessment measured comprehension or word reading and socioeconomic status of the sample did not moderate the relation. Understanding the association between reading and externalizing behavior has implications for disability identification and intervention practices for children in elementary school. Future research should examine shared cognitive factors and environmental influences that explain the relation between the constructs.

Abstract
Background: Non-medical use of amphetamine and other stimulants prescribed for treatment of attention deficit/hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) is of special concern when combined with alcohol consumption. In a previous study, we modeled chronic ethanol-amphetamine co-use in adolescent Long-Evans (LE) rats and provided evidence that amphetamine attenuates alcohol withdrawal symptoms.Objectives: This project modeled co-use of amphetamine with alcohol in adolescents with ADHD-like symptoms by examining ethanol-amphetamine administration in adolescent Spontaneously Hypertensive Rats (SHR), an experimental model for the study of ADHD. Withdrawal symptoms were compared among SHR and two control rat strains, LE and Wistar Kyoto (WKY).Methods: At postnatal day 32, parallel groups of 12-24 male SHR, WKY and LE rats were administered a liquid diet containing ethanol (3.6%) and/or amphetamine (20 mg/L). Following administration periods up to 26 days, rats were withdrawn from their treatment and tested for overall severity of alcohol withdrawal symptoms, general locomotor activity, and anxiety-like behavior.Results: Overall withdrawal severity was lower for SHR than for LE (p < .001) or WKY (p = .027). Co-consumption of amphetamine decreased withdrawal severity for LE (p = .033) and WKY (p = .011) but not SHR (p = .600). Only WKY showed increased anxiety-like behavior during withdrawal (p = .031), but not after amphetamine co-administration (p = .832).Conclusion: Alcohol withdrawal severity may be attenuated when co-used with amphetamine. However, as a model for ADHD, SHR adolescents appeared resistant to developing significant signs of alcohol withdrawal following alcohol consumption. Whether alcohol withdrawal symptoms are attenuated or absent, potential consequences could include a decreased awareness of an emerging problem with alcohol use.

Abstract
Limited analyses based on national samples have assessed whether early attention-deficit/hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) symptoms predict later internalizing and externalizing symptoms in youth and the influence of sex and pubertal timing on subsequent psychiatric symptoms. This study analyzed data (n = 2818) from the Environmental influences on Child Health Outcomes Program national cohort. Analyses used data from early childhood (mean age = 5.3 years) utilizing parent-reported ADHD symptoms to predict rates of internalizing and externalizing symptoms from late childhood/adolescence (mean age = 11.9 years). Within a subsample age at peak height velocity (APHV) acted as a proxy to assess pubertal timing from early childhood (mean age = 5.4 years) to adolescence (mean age = 12.3 years). Early-childhood ADHD symptoms predicted later psychiatric symptoms, including anxiety, depression, aggressive behavior, conduct problems, oppositional defiant disorder, and rule-breaking behavior. Earlier APHV was associated with increased Conduct Disorder symptoms from late childhood to adolescence for females only. A stronger relation between ADHD symptoms and later aggression was observed in females with earlier APHV, whereas this same pattern with aggression, conduct problems and depression was observed in males with later APHV. Clinicians should consider that both young girls and boys with elevated ADHD symptoms, particularly with off-set pubertal timing, may be at risk for later psychiatric symptoms.

Abstract
OBJECTIVE A bidirectional relationship between family functioning and parenting styles and Attention Deficit and Hyperactivity Disorder (ADHD) is proposed. The aim of this study is to examine the effect of ADHD symptoms on parenting styles and the general functionality of the family as well as symptoms of depression and anxiety. METHODS 73 children with ADHD (56%) and 56 controls (43%) (a total of 129 participants, 31% female, 69% male) with a mean age of 11.3 (7-17, n: 129) were included in the study, which was conducted in Gaziantep University Hospital Child Psychiatry Department in 2022. The participants completed psychometric scales. RESULTS Parents of children with ADHD showed higher positive parenting scores than the control group (p < 0.05). Inconsistent discipline scores were substantially higher in the ADHD combined subtype (14.38 ± 5.2) than in the attention deficit dominant group (17.59 ± 3.96) In addition, a strong correlation was found between familial functionality scores and ADHD severity in the ADHD attention deficit dominant subtype (r:0.601; p:0.027) and as ADHD severity increased, family functionality decreased. CONCLUSIONS This study shows that parents of children with ADHD have different parenting styles and ADHD affects the overall functionality of the family in the Turkish sample.

Abstract
Common misbehavior among children that prevents them from paying attention to tasks and interacting with their surroundings appropriately is attention-deficit/hyperactivity disorder (ADHD). Studies of children's behavior presently face a significant problem in the early and timely diagnosis of this disease. To diagnose this disease, doctors often use the patient's description and questionnaires, psychological tests, and the patient's behavior in which reliability is questionable. Convolutional neural network (CNN) is one deep learning technique that has been used for the diagnosis of ADHD. CNN, however, does not account for how signals change over time, which leads to low classification performances and ambiguous findings. In this study, the authors designed a hybrid deep learning model that combines long-short-term memory (LSTM) and CNN to simultaneously extract and learn the spatial features and long-term dependencies of the electroencephalography (EEG) data. The effectiveness of the proposed hybrid deep learning model was assessed using 2 publicly available EEG datasets. The suggested model achieves a classification accuracy of 98.86% on the ADHD dataset and 98.28% on the FOCUS dataset, respectively. The experimental findings show that the proposed hybrid CNN-LSTM model outperforms the state-of-the-art methods to diagnose ADHD using EEG. Hence, the proposed hybrid CNN-LSTM model could therefore be utilized to help with the clinical diagnosis of ADHD patients.

Abstract
Attention-deficit/hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) is a neurodevelopmental condition that only rarely remits in adulthood. While several studies underlined differences between child and adult ADHD, the relationship between adult clinical presentation and early referral/treatment has been rarely investigated. In our study, 100 adults with ADHD were recruited and subdivided according to a history of referral to speciality care or treatment with methylphenidate (MPH) during childhood/adolescence. The early referral was associated with a history of disruptive behaviors during childhood/adolescence. Current ADHD symptoms were more pronounced in patients first referred during childhood/adolescence but never treated with MPH. Early MPH treatment was associated with lower rates of mood disorders and lower severity of emotional dysregulation at the time of assessment. Negative emotionality mediated the relationship between MPH treatment and mood disorders comorbidity. ADHD patients first referred during childhood/adolescence are characterized by more externalizing features than those first referred in adulthood. MPH treatment during the developmental age may have a role in preventing mood disorders in patients with ADHD, possibly by reducing emotional dysregulation.

Abstract
Attention deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) is a neurodevelopmental disorder diagnosed with hyperactivity, impulsivity, and a lack of attention inconsistent with the patient's development level. The fact that people with ADHD frequently experience gastrointestinal (GI) dysfunction highlights the possibility that the gut microbiome may play a role in this condition. The proposed research aims to determine a biomarker for ADHD by reconstructing a model of the gut-microbial community. Genome-scale metabolic models (GEM) considering the relationship between gene-protein-reaction associations are used to simulate metabolic activities in organisms of gut. The production rates of dopamine and serotonin precursors and the key short chain fatty acids which affect the health status are determined under three diets (Western, Atkins', Vegan) and compared with those of healthy people. Elasticities are calculated to understand the sensitivity of exchange fluxes to changes in diet and bacterial abundance at the species level. The presence of Bacillota (genus Coprococcus and Subdoligranulum), Actinobacteria (genus Collinsella), Bacteroidetes (genus Bacteroides), and Bacteroidota (genus Alistipes) may be possible gut microbiota indicators of ADHD. This type of modeling approach taking microbial genome-environment interactions into account helps us understand the gastrointestinal mechanisms behind ADHD, and establish a path to improve the quality of life of ADHD patients.

Abstract
This study investigated parental perspectives and experiences on the evaluation and treatment process associated with attention-deficit/hyperactivity disorder (ADHD). Five hundred sixty-eight parents of youth 2-28 years-old (M = 9.37; SD = 4.11) diagnosed with ADHD responded to a 14-item online survey about their child's diagnosis and treatment. Parents reported that they had tried an average of 4.49 interventions (SD = 2.63). Parents further shared factors in treatment selection, most helpful parenting strategies, and preferences for types of treatments and treatment targets. A majority of parents reported incorporating many non-traditional strategies (e.g., exercise, healthy eating, outdoor activities) with goals of improving their child's coping skills, study habits, and anger management. The findings show that treatment choices were often selected based on trust in the provider, research support, and the child's preference. Given parental preferences for non-traditional strategies, treatment development efforts should consider these strategies as a component of a broader multimodal treatment approach to ADHD.

Abstract
We aimed to identify subgroups of young children with differential risks for ADHD, and cross-validate these subgroups with an independent sample of children. All children in Study 1 (N = 120) underwent psychological assessments and were diagnosed with ADHD before age 7. Latent class analysis (LCA) classified children into risk subgroups. Study 2 (N = 168) included an independent sample of children under age 7. A predictive model from Study 1 was applied to Study 2. The latent class analyses in Study 1 indicated preference of a 3-class solution (BIC = 3807.70, p < 0.001). Maternal education, income-to-needs ratio, and family history of psychopathology, defined class membership more strongly than child factors. An almost identical LCA structure from Study 1 was replicated in Study 2 (BIC = 5108.01, p < 0.001). Indices of sensitivity (0.913, 95% C.I. 0.814−0.964) and specificity (0.788, 95% C.I. 0.692−0.861) were high across studies. It is concluded that the classifications represent valid combinations of child, parent, and family characteristics that are predictive of ADHD in young children.

Abstract
OBJECTIVE The systematic review sought to understand the relationship between maternal depression and later ADHD in children. METHOD Three databases were used to identify the studies (Medline, Web of Science and PsychInfo) resulting in 1,223 studies being screened and 14 articles being included in the review. RESULTS The majority of studies (N = 11) reported a significant relationship between maternal depression (across both prenatal and postnatal periods) and ADHD symptoms in children. This relationship remained significant when temperament, or past ADHD symptoms were controlled for. Several methodological issues were identified including; overreliance on maternal report and parental ADHD not being accounted for in most studies. CONCLUSION The review adds to the literature regarding the temporal relationship between maternal depression and the development of ADHD in children, and thus supports the case for improving access to mental health services for mothers as a preventative strategy in the development of child psychopathology.

Abstract
IMPORTANCE Autism spectrum disorder (ASD) and attention-deficit/hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) are childhood-onset disorders that may persist into adulthood. Several studies have suggested that they may be associated with an increased risk of mortality; however, the results are inconsistent. OBJECTIVE To assess the risk of mortality among persons with ASD or ADHD and their first-degree relatives. DATA SOURCES A search of MEDLINE, Embase, Scopus, Web of Science, and PsycINFO (published from inception to April 1, 2021) was supplemented by searching reference lists of the retrieved articles. STUDY SELECTION Cohort and case-control studies that reported mortality rate ratios (RRs) in persons with ASD or ADHD and/or their first-degree relatives compared with the general population or those without ASD/ADHD were included. DATA EXTRACTION AND SYNTHESIS Screening, data extraction, and quality assessment were performed by at least 2 researchers independently. A random-effects model was used to meta-analyze individual studies and assessed heterogeneity (I2). MAIN OUTCOMES AND MEASURES All-cause mortality in association with ASD or ADHD. Secondary outcome was cause-specific mortality. RESULTS Twenty-seven studies were included, with a total of 642 260 individuals. All-cause mortality was found to be higher for persons with ASD (154 238 participants; 12 studies; RR, 2.37; 95% CI, 1.97-2.85; I2, 89%; moderate confidence) and persons with ADHD (396 488 participants; 8 studies; RR, 2.13; 95% CI, 1.13-4.02; I2, 98%; low confidence) than for the general population. Among persons with ASD, deaths from natural causes (4 studies; RR, 3.80; 95% CI, 2.06-7.01; I2, 96%; low confidence) and deaths from unnatural causes were increased (6 studies; RR, 2.50; 95% CI, 1.49-4.18; I2, 95%; low confidence). Among persons with ADHD, deaths from natural causes were not significantly increased (4 studies; RR, 1.62; 95% CI, 0.89-2.96; I2, 88%; low confidence), but deaths from unnatural causes were higher than expected (10 studies; RR, 2.81; 95% CI, 1.73-4.55; I2, 92%; low confidence). CONCLUSIONS AND RELEVANCE This systematic review and meta-analysis found that ASD and ADHD are associated with a significantly increased risk of mortality. Understanding the mechanisms of these associations may lead to targeted strategies to prevent avoidable deaths in high-risk groups. The substantial heterogeneity between studies should be explored further.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Event perception provides a promising, novel approach for investigating underlying cognitive mechanisms of the social impairment associated with symptoms of ADHD. AIMS The goal of this study was to establish the relationship among event perception, symptoms of ADHD, and social skills. METHODOLOGY Eighty-three undergraduates were recruited from the University of Ottawa first year psychology courses (38 with ADHD, 45 without ADHD). They performed an event perception task and completed self-report questionnaires assessing social functioning and symptoms of ADHD (The Social Skills-Improvement System and the Conner's CBRS-SR). RESULTS Bootstrapping mediation analyses revealed that symptoms of inattention and hyperactivity mediated the relationship between event perception and social skills. A model with predictor and mediator reversed was also tested, and was not significant, providing strength to the directionality of the relationships. Results highlight the applicability of event perception to understanding the association between social impairment and symptoms of ADHD.

Efficacy and Safety of a Long-Acting Multilayer-Release Methylphenidate Formulation (PRC-063) in the Treatment of Adolescent Attention-Deficit/Hyperactivity Disorder: A Randomized, Double-Blind Clinical Trial with a 6-Month Open-Label Extension. Abstract
Objectives: To study the safety and efficacy of the long-acting methylphenidate formulation PRC-063 in adolescents with attention-deficit/hyperactivity disorder (ADHD). Methods: Adolescents 12 to ≤17 years who met Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders (DSM)-5 criteria for ADHD and had a baseline ADHD Rating Scale DSM-5 (ADHD-5-RS) score ≥24 participated in a randomized, double-blind, placebo-controlled, fixed-dose, parallel-group study. Participants were randomized 1:1:1:1:1 to receive placebo or one of four doses of PRC-063 once daily for 4 weeks. The primary endpoint was change from baseline in least-squares mean clinician-rated ADHD-5-RS total score for PRC-063 (all doses combined) versus placebo. Other efficacy assessments included Conners third Edition: Self-Report (C3SR) and Clinical Global Impression-Improvement (CGI-I). A subset of double-blind study participants entered a subsequent open-label, dose-optimized study. Safety outcomes in both studies included treatment-emergent adverse events (TEAEs). Results: Three hundred fifty-four participants were included in the primary analysis. The least-squares mean change from baseline in ADHD-5-RS total score was -15.17 for PRC-063 versus -10.98 for placebo (least-squares mean difference -4.2, p = 0.0067). For individual PRC-063 doses, improvements in ADHD-5-RS total score versus placebo were significant for 45 mg (p = 0.0155) and 70 mg (p = 0.0401), but not for 25 or 85 mg. A significant improvement for PRC-063 versus placebo was recorded for C3SR Inattention (p = 0.0168), but not for the other C3SR subscales. About 52.7% of participants randomized to PRC-063 were responders based on CGI-I versus 32.4% of those randomized to placebo (p = 0.0004). Further improvements in ADHD symptoms based on ADHD-5-RS were observed from 1 month through 6 months of open-label treatment (p < 0.0001). There were two serious adverse events (both during the open-label study), one of which (aggressive behavior) was assessed as related to study drug. The only TEAEs that occurred in >10% of participants during double-blind treatment were decreased appetite (20.1%) and headache (15.0%). Most TEAEs were of mild or moderate severity. Conclusion: PRC-063 significantly improved ADHD symptomatology in adolescents. It was generally well tolerated, with an AE profile consistent with other long-acting stimulants. Abstract
Objectives: Short, self-report screening measures for adolescent and adult attention-deficit/hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) would greatly enhance the likelihood of ADHD subjects to be correctly diagnosed and treated. This study aimed at testing the reliability, factor structure, convergent validity, external validity, and diagnostic accuracy of the official Italian translation of the ADHD Self-Report Screening Scale for DSM-5 (ASRS-5) in a sample of community-dwelling adolescents, extending previous data on adult participants to adolescent participants. Methods: Five hundred sixty-four community-dwelling male adolescents (mean age ≅15) were administered the ASRS-5, the Adult ADHD Self-Report Scale 18-item and 6-item versions (ASRS-18 and ASRS-6), the Wender Utah Rating Scale (WURS), and the Structured Clinician Interview for DSM-5-Clinician Version ADHD Module (SCID-5-CV-ADHD). School performance variables were also collected. Results: The item response theory (IRT) reliability of ASRS-5 was adequate. Dimensionality analyses strongly supported the unidimensional structure of ASRS-5 items; confirmatory factor analysis fit indices supported the adequacy of the one-factor model of ASRS-5. In terms of convergent validity, the ASRS-5 total score was significantly and positively associated with self-report and interview-based ADHD dimensional scores, as well as with school performance variables. Roughly 8.0% of our male adolescents met SCID-5-CV-ADHD criteria for categorical ADHD diagnosis. Ten-fold cross-validated receiver operating curve value was 0.843; precision-recall curve analysis suggests that an ASRS-5 total score >12 may be preferred for screening purposes in adolescence. Conclusions: Our data showed that the ASRS-5 may represent a psychometrically sound self-report instrument to reliably screen for DSM-5 ADHD, extending the range of application of ASRS-5 from adulthood to adolescence, suggesting that the ASRS-5 could be safely used for screening purposes also in community-dwelling adolescents, at least in its official Italian translation.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Attention deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) is a widely recognized mental health problem in developed countries but remains under-investigated in developing settings. This study examines the prevalence, correlates, and consequences of ADHD symptoms among elementary school students in rural China. METHODS Cross-sectional data were collected from 6,719 students across 120 rural primary schools in China on ADHD symptoms, demographic characteristics, and academic performance in reading and math. ADHD symptoms were evaluated using the caregiver-reported ADHD Rating Scale-IV. RESULTS The prevalence of ADHD symptoms was 7.5% in our sample. Male students, students in lower grade levels, and students with lower cognitive ability showed a significantly higher prevalence of ADHD symptoms (ORs = 2.56, 2.06, and 1.84, respectively; p<0.05). Left-behind children showed a significantly lower prevalence of ADHD symptoms than did children who were living with their parents (OR = 0.74, p < 0.05). Adjusted regressions show that students with ADHD symptoms scored 0.12 standardized deviations lower in reading (p < 0.05) and 0.19 standardized deviations lower in math (p < 0.01). LIMITATIONS The ADHD Rating Scale-IV is a screening scale rather than a diagnostic test. Caregiver self-report measures also may underestimate ADHD symptoms for our sample. CONCLUSIONS ADHD is a common disorder among rural students in China and appears to be contributing to poor academic outcomes. The higher prevalence of ADHD among students with low cognitive ability also suggests that many rural children in China face multifactorial learning challenges. Taken together, the findings indicate a need for educators and policymakers in rural China to develop programs to reduce risk and support students with ADHD symptoms.

Abstract
Attention-deficit/hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) leads to functional decline in academic performance, interpersonal relationships, and development in school-aged children. Early diagnosis and appropriate intervention can significantly reduce the functional decline caused by ADHD. Currently, there is no established biological marker for ADHD. Some studies have suggested that various indicators from the quantitative electroencephalogram (QEEG) may be useful biological markers for the diagnosis of ADHD. Until the 2010s, theta/beta ratio (TBR) was a biomarker candidate for ADHD that consistently showed high diagnostic value. However, limitations of TBR have recently been reported. Studies have demonstrated that phase-amplitude coupling, especially theta phase-gamma amplitude coupling, are related to cognitive dysfunction and may assist in the diagnosis of ADHD. As yet, the underlying mechanism is not clearly established, and the clinical efficacy of these biomarkers needs to be proven through well-controlled studies. Based on the heterogeneous characteristics of ADHD, subgrouping through QEEG plays a key role in diagnosis and treatment planning. Sophisticated, well-designed studies and meta-analyses are necessary to confirm these findings.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Attention-deficit/hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) is associated with negative social and occupational outcomes across the life course. However, there has been limited population-based research that quantifies the impact of ADHD on academic achievement and academic trajectories. AIMS To compare academic performance and academic trajectories of students with ADHD with students without a mental disorder. SAMPLE Data were drawn from Young Minds Matter, a national population-based sample of 6,310 Australian children and adolescents aged 4-17 years. Using linked achievement test data, the academic performance and trajectories of 327 students with ADHD were compared with those of 3,916 students without a mental disorder. METHODS Survey data were combined with scores on national standardized tests for literacy and numeracy over an 8-year period. RESULTS In Year 3, students with ADHD were on average 1 year behind students with no mental disorder in reading and numeracy, and 9 months behind in writing. In Year 9, the gaps were much larger with students with ADHD on average 2.5 years behind in reading, 3 years behind in numeracy, and 4.5 years behind in writing. CONCLUSIONS Students with ADHD have substantially lower achievement in reading, writing, and numeracy. Writing was the most adversely affected domain. For example, in Year 9 students with ADHD were on average writing at a Year 5 level. Children and adolescents with ADHD need substantial support to manage inattention, impulsivity, and hyperactivity. Skilled remediation in literacy and numeracy is required throughout all school years.

Abstract
Although childhood-onset psychiatric disorders are often considered as distinct and separate from each other, they frequently co-occur, with partial overlapping symptomatology. Autism spectrum disorder (ASD) and attention-deficit/hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) commonly co-occur with each other and with other mental disorders, particularly disruptive behavior disorders, oppositional defiant disorder/conduct disorder (ODD/CD). Whether these associated comorbidities represent a spectrum of distinct clinical phenotypes is matter of research. The aim of our study was to describe the clinical phenotypes of youths with ADHD with and without ASD and/or ODD/CD, based on neuropsychological and psychopathological variables. One-hundred fifty-one participants with ADHD were prospectively recruited and assigned to four clinical groups, and assessed by means of parent-reported questionnaires, the child behavior checklist and the behavior rating inventory of executive functions. The ADHD alone group presented a greater impairment in metacognitive executive functions, ADHD+ASD patients presented higher internalizing problems and deficits in Shifting tasks, and ADHD+ODD/CD subjects presented emotional-behavioral dysregulation. Moreover, ADHD+ASD+ODD/CD individuals exhibited greater internalizing and externalizing problems, and specific neuropsychological impairments in the domains of emotional regulation. Our study supports the need to implement the evaluation of the psychopathological and neuropsychological functioning profiles, and to characterize specific endophenotypes for a finely customized establishment of treatment strategies.

Abstract
AbstractAttention is an important, multifaceted cognitive domain that includes many key cognitive processes involved in learning. This study aimed to identify the predictive links between different components of attentional skills and core calculation skills development, using two standardized measures assessing calculation (AC-MT 6–11) and attention skills (CAS) in a sample of 143 typically developing children of age range from 7.6 years to 9.4 years. The results showed that in 2nd grade, selective visuo-spatial attention emerged as an important predictor in the written calculation task, while the ability to inhibit distracting information seemed to better predict accuracy in oral calculation. In 3rd grade, visuo-spatial components of attention emerged as no longer predictive, whereas planning and active visuo-spatial attention abilities emerged as predictive of accuracy in the oral calculation task. These results confirm previous findings about the contribution that attentional skills may have in calculation skills development, supporting evidence for progressive automation attentional components over time.

Abstract
Background
Attention deficit hyperactivity disorder was previously seen as a childhood developmental disorder, so adult mental health services were not set up to support attention deficit hyperactivity disorder patients who became too old for child services. To our knowledge, this is the first in-depth study of the transition of attention deficit hyperactivity disorder patients from child to adult health services in the UK.
Objectives
Our objectives were to explore how many young people with attention deficit hyperactivity disorder are in need of services as an adult, what adult attention deficit hyperactivity disorder services are available and how attention deficit hyperactivity disorder stakeholders experience transition from child to adult services.

An interactive mixed-method design was adopted with three study streams: (1) a 12-month surveillance study with 9-month follow-up to find out how many young people required ongoing medication when they were too old for child services (929 surveys completed by children’s clinicians); (2) a mapping study to identify and describe services for young adults with attention deficit hyperactivity disorder (2686 respondents to online surveys for patients and health workers and freedom of information requests to service providers and commissioners); and (3) a qualitative study to explore key stakeholders’ experiences of transition from child to adult services (144 interviews with 64 attention deficit hyperactivity disorder patients, 28 parents and 52 health clinicians; 38 working in child or adult secondary health services and 14 general practitioners). Members of the public advised at each stage of the study.
Results
When corrected for non-response and case ascertainment, the annual number of young people with an ongoing need for medication for attention deficit hyperactivity disorder lies between 270 and 599 per 100,000 people aged 17–19 years. Among 315 individuals eligible for transition, 64% were accepted, but only 22% attended their first adult services appointment. Our interactive map describes 294 unique services for adults with attention deficit hyperactivity disorder across the UK, of which 44 are ‘dedicated’ attention deficit hyperactivity disorder services. Few services provide the full range of recommended provision; most focus on diagnosis and medication. Services are unevenly distributed across the UK, with nearly all ‘dedicated’ services being in England. Exploring stakeholders’ experiences revealed how invested the stakeholders are in continuing attention deficit hyperactivity disorder treatment and how the architecture of services affects transition. An association between attention deficit hyperactivity disorder, education and continuance of medication into young adulthood, plus parent involvement and feeling prepared for transition and adult life with attention deficit hyperactivity disorder, influenced investment. However, even with investment, how accessible adult services are, how patient needs fit with the remit of the adult service and the level of patient information available affect transition outcomes. The results also highlight how general practitioners can end up as care co-ordinators during transition by default.
Limitations
Transition estimates were based on those who want medication, so these indicate a minimum level of need.
Conclusions
Few of those who need ongoing support for attention deficit hyperactivity disorder successfully transfer to adult services, and a small proportion of those who transfer experience optimal transitional care. Adult attention deficit hyperactivity disorder service provision is patchy. Even among ‘dedicated’ services, few provide the whole range of National Institute for Health and Care Excellence-recommended treatments.
Future work
We need to evaluate various models of transitional care and adult attention deficit hyperactivity disorder provision, as well as develop and evaluate psychosocial interventions for young people and adults with attention deficit hyperactivity disorder.

Abstract
Introduction: Recent estimates suggest that there is a substantial number of Japanese students with developmental disabilities. This study aimed to examine potential associations between autistic, autistic subcomponents, and attention deficit/hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) traits with student performance (as measured by presenteeism) and class attendance among Japanese university students. Methods: Participants comprised 721 students from different regions of Japan who completed a self-administered internet survey. Autistic and ADHD traits were measured using an abridged version of the autism spectrum quotient (AQ-Short) and adult ADHD self-report scale (ASRS). Presenteeism, which is an indicator of student performance, was assessed using the modified World Health Organization Health and Work Performance Questionnaire. Class attendance during the past year was self-reported by participants. Results: Students with high levels of autistic traits and high levels of ADHD traits were significantly more likely to report poor student performance (odds ratio [OR] = 3.07, 95% confidence interval [95% CI]: 1.90–4.96; and OR = 2.13, 95% CI: 1.32–3.42, respectively). Regarding autistic trait subcomponents, students with high levels of preference for routine (OR = 2.39, 95% CI: 1.38–4.13) and high levels of difficulties with social skills (OR = 1.81, 95% CI: 1.03–3.18) were also significantly more likely to report poor student performance. There were borderline significant associations between traits of attention-switching difficulties and poor student performance (OR = 1.78, 95% CI: 1.00–3.15). Regarding ADHD trait subcomponents, students with high levels of inattention (OR = 2.88, 95% CI: 1.32–6.26) were also significantly more likely to report poor student performance. Students with both high levels of autistic traits and high levels of ADHD traits were more likely to report poor student performance than those with high levels of only one trait type. There were, however, no statistically significant associations between these traits and low class attendance risk. Conclusions: Sickness presenteeism was significantly associated with high levels of both autistic traits and ADHD traits among Japanese university students.

Abstract
Objective: Test the hypothesis that alcoholism, including antisocial alcoholism, is more prevalent among mothers and fathers of children with versus without ADHD. Method: Mothers (312 ADHD group, 235 non-ADHD group) and fathers (291 ADHD group, 227 non-ADHD group) in the Pittsburgh ADHD Longitudinal Study were interviewed along with their adolescent and young adult offspring. Results: Maternal and paternal alcoholism, with and without comorbid antisociality, was more prevalent in the ADHD group. Paternal alcoholism without antisociality was only marginally higher for probands after controlling for paternal ADHD. Offspring conduct disorder comorbidity was associated with parental antisociality but not parental antisocial alcoholism. Conclusion: Our findings that 44% of proband fathers and 25% of proband mothers experienced alcohol problems with or without antisociality are further evidence of increased alcoholism prevalence in families affected by ADHD. Maternal alcoholism and antisociality are prominent contributors to this family-level vulnerability. These findings indicate the need to assess long-term offspring outcomes as a function of parental alcohol and externalizing comorbidities, and perhaps other indicators of parental alcoholism phenotype, as familial vulnerability unfolds across development.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Persistence and emergence of ADHD in adulthood are associated with substance problems. We investigate differential implications of ADHD course for tobacco, alcohol, or marijuana problems by sex, then whether substance misuse results from ADHD or contributes to it, through a twin differences design. METHODS A population-based cohort of 998 twins (61 % monozygotic; 52 % female), born in Minnesota from 1988 to 1994, was prospectively assessed from ages 11-24. Childhood ADHD was oversampled. At age 24, 255 had a history of childhood-onset ADHD (160 persistent, 95 remitted); 93 had late-onset ADHD symptoms identified in late-adolescence/adulthood. Persistent, remitted, and late-onset groups were compared to those without ADHD (N = 459) on childhood characteristics and age-24 substance problems. RESULTS Persistent and late-onset groups differed in childhood; twin concordances suggested greater genetic etiology for persistent ADHD. As adolescents, however, both groups were high in conduct problems; by adulthood, they were comparably high in substance problems. In particular, women whose ADHD persisted were 5 times more likely to develop tobacco use disorder than women without ADHD. Remitted ADHD was associated with less-increased risk, except for alcohol problems among women. Consistent with possible causality, monozygotic female twins with more age-17 ADHD symptoms than co-twins had more age-24 tobacco symptoms; a similar association was found for alcohol. CONCLUSIONS Presence or emergence of ADHD in early adulthood increases substance problems to a greater degree for women than men. While effects of substances on later ADHD were not statistically significant, detection was limited by the relative rarity of late-adolescent substance symptoms.

Abstract
Youths with attention-deficit/hyperactivity disorder symptomatology often exhibit residual inattention and/or hyperactivity in adulthood; however, this is not true for all individuals. We recently reported that dimensional, multi-informant ratings of hyperactive/inattentive symptoms are associated with ventromedial prefrontal cortex (vmPFC) structure. Herein, we investigate the degree to which vmPFC structure during adolescence predicts hyperactive/inattentive symptomatology at 5-year follow-up. Structural equation modeling was used to test the extent to which adolescent vmPFC volume predicts hyperactive/inattentive symptomatology 5 years later in early adulthood. 1104 participants (M = 14.52 years, standard deviation = 0.42; 583 females) possessed hyperactive/inattentive symptom data at 5-year follow-up, as well as quality controlled neuroimaging data and complete psychometric data at baseline. Self-reports of hyperactive/inattentive symptomatology were obtained during adolescence and at 5-year follow-up using the Strengths and Difficulties Questionnaire (SDQ). At baseline and 5-year follow-up, a hyperactive/inattentive latent variable was derived from items on the SDQ. Baseline vmPFC volume predicted adult hyperactive/inattentive symptomatology (standardized coefficient = -0.274, P < 0.001) while controlling for baseline hyperactive/inattentive symptomatology. These results are the first to reveal relations between adolescent brain structure and adult hyperactive/inattentive symptomatology, and suggest that early structural development of the vmPFC may be consequential for the subsequent expression of hyperactive/inattentive symptoms.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Existing studies of attention deficit/hyperactivity disorder (ADHD), conduct disorder (CD), and substance use or substance use disorders have produced mixed results, with some identifying a direct link between ADHD and general or disordered substance use and others suggesting that comorbid CD may explain this relationship. Insufficient research has addressed the issue, which is particularly relevant in the context of the opioid crisis. This study examined the association of probable ADHD and childhood CD with self-reported opioid use in a general-population sample. METHOD The 2011-2013 cycles of the CAMH Monitor, a cross-sectional survey of adults (18+ years) from Ontario, Canada provided data from 6074 respondents. Binary logistic regressions were conducted of self-reported medical, non-medical, and any prescription opioid use in the previous 12 months, assessing demographic characteristics, perceived physical and mental health, and probable ADHD, childhood (before age 15 years) symptoms of CD, or their combination. RESULTS Adjusting for potential covariates, probable ADHD alone was not associated with prescription opioid use. Childhood symptoms of CD significantly predicted non-medical use (OR = 2.10, 95% CI = 1.10, 4.03). ADHD and CD symptoms combined significantly predicted medical (OR = 3.27, 95% CI = 1.20, 8.91), non-medical (OR = 4.73, 95% CI = 1.05, 21.30), and any (OR = 3.02, 95% CI = 1.13, 8.11) prescription opioid use, although a low base rate of non-medical use may have negatively affected model fit. CONCLUSIONS Previous findings relating ADHD to opioid use could be explained, in part, by the high rate of comorbidity between ADHD and CD. These data support prevention and treatment programs targeting individuals with comorbid ADHD and CD symptoms.

Abstract
Previous research suggests that a majority of children with attention-deficit/hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) continue to experience increased impairment across multiple life domains into adulthood. A systematic review of the occupational impairments, and associated educational and financial difficulties, faced by individuals with childhood ADHD was conducted. Systematic searches from PsycINFO and PubMed databases and other sources (i.e., books and consultants with experts) yielded 35 relevant articles that described 19 longitudinal studies on adults with a history of ADHD or related symptoms. Multiple studies indicated that those with a history of ADHD had more educational impairment and were less likely to graduate from high school and college than their peers without a history of ADHD. Subsequently, they faced lower occupational attainment, had more job instability, and demonstrated more impaired job performance, and these outcomes were largely consistent regardless of sex, medication history, or symptom persistence. Similar results were found in clinical and representative national studies in both U.S. and abroad, although older studies tended to indicate less occupational impairment. In addition, ADHD was associated with a number of financial challenges, including lower annual income, more reliance on public aid, and increased risk for homelessness. Future research should use more varied informant sources and utilize innovative measures of occupational impairment at both a macro- and micro-level of analyses. In addition, studies of effective supports and interventions in occupational settings for individuals with ADHD are needed.

Abstract
INTRODUCTION Attention Deficit/Hyperactivity Disorder (ADHD) is associated with impaired social competencies, due in part to an inability to determine emotional states through facial expressions. Social interactions are a critical component of adolescence, which raises the question of how do adolescents with ADHD cope with this impairment. Yet, previous reviews do not distinguish between children and adolescents. This review focuses on the ability of adolescents (defined by the World Health Organization as 10-19 years old) with ADHD to recognize emotional facial expressions, when compared to their typically-developing peers. METHODS Comprehensive database search and analysis yielded 9 relevant studies published between 2008 and 2018. RESULTS The studies reviewed here examined recognition of emotional facial expressions in adolescents with ADHD. Behavioral measures (reaction time, reaction time variance and recognition accuracy) show no statistically significant differences between adolescents with ADHD and their typically-developing peers. However, neural responses as recorded using functional Magnetic Resonance Imaging (fMRI) or Event Related Potentials (ERP) find differences in brain activity and the temporal evolution of the reaction between the two groups. CONCLUSIONS Studies of children and of adults with ADHD find deficiencies in the recognition of emotional facial expressions. However, this review shows that adolescents with ADHD perform comparably to their peers on accuracy and rate, although their neural processing is different. This suggests that the methodologies employed by the ADHD and typically-developing adolescents to asses facial expressions are different. Further study is needed to determine what these may be.

Abstract
Objective: To test the previously suggested hypothesis that those with comorbid ADHD and Conduct Disorder (CD) diagnoses differ from other antisocially involved youth in terms of higher rates of violent behavior, impulsiveness, and psychopathic traits. Method: Three hundred eighty juvenile incarcerated delinquents from Northern Russia were assessed by means of semi-structured psychiatric interview and by student and teacher self-reports. Results: The study has demonstrated higher rates of psychiatric disorders and of comorbidity, as well as more complicated substance abuse and disruptive behaviors in those with combined ADHD-CD diagnosis, as compared with CD only, ADHD only, and no CD no ADHD groups. The results regarding psychopathic traits were inconclusive. Conclusion: The group with combined ADHD-CD diagnosis is more severely disturbed, both as concerns psychiatric comorbidity and more severe aggressive and disruptive behaviors. However, there is only limited evidence supporting a higher prevalence of psychopathic traits in this group.

Abstract
OBJECTIVE The Weiss Functional Impairment Rating Scale-Self-Report Form (WFIRS-S) was developed as a measure of functional impairment in adolescents and adults with ADHD. This study reports the psychometric properties of the Persian version of the WFIRS-S in a sample of normal Iranian adolescents. METHOD Internal consistency and factor structure of the WFIRS-S were tested on a sample of 386 students (Grades 7-12). The test-retest reliability and the convergent validity of the WFIRS-S were evaluated by using two different subsamples including 50 and 100 students, respectively. RESULTS The Cronbach's alpha values were between .72 and .94 for the WFIRS-S subdomains and total scale. The test-retest reliability was .80 for the total scale. The WFIRS-S subdomains had moderate to high significant correlations with the Pediatric Quality of Life total scale. CONCLUSION The Persian version of the WFIRS-S has acceptable psychometric properties and could be used as a functional impairment assessment for adolescents.

Abstract
Objective: Examine the moderating effects of response inhibition on the longitudinal association between social preference/relational aggression measured in childhood, and intimate partner violence (IPV) measured in young adulthood, among women with (n = 140) and without (n = 88) histories of childhood ADHD. Method: During childhood, social preference was measured through confidential peer sociometric nominations, yielding negative and positive peer regard; relational aggression was assessed via staff behavioral observations; and response inhibition was assessed using commission errors from the continuous performance task. During young adulthood, IPV was ascertained via a clinician-administered, semistructured interview. Results: Social preference and relational aggression independently predicted IPV; this prospective link was moderated by response inhibition. Conclusion: In combination with low social preference or high relational aggression in childhood, poor response inhibition predicted the highest levels of young-adult IPV. Given the developmental significance of peer relationships, additional research on the causes of and treatments for poor social functioning in ADHD is warranted.

Abstract
OBJECTIVE The objective of this study was to evaluate rates and correlates of stimulant medication adherence in a sample of pediatric patients using data derived from electronic medical records (EMRs) from a large health care organization in a large metropolitan area. The study relied on a novel definition of medication adherence as a timely renewal of an index prescription determined using the electronically recorded issuance of a stimulant prescription in the EMR ("refill"). METHODS Prescription and sociodemographic data were extracted from the Partners HealthCare Research Patient Data Registry to calculate adherence to stimulant medication treatment. RESULTS In the EMR, 2,206 patients with prescriptions for central nervous system stimulant medication were identified. Results showed that 46% of the index prescriptions were refilled within the timeframe necessary for the patient to be considered consistently medicated. A multivariable logistic regression model predicting medication adherence from patient demographic and treatment characteristics yielded an area-under-the-curve statistic of 0.57, indicating that these characteristics predicted adherence only modestly better than chance. CONCLUSIONS EMR data from a large health care organization showed that 46% of pediatric patients were adherent to treatment with stimulants. Rates of medication adherence were worse among patients receiving care from a primary care provider than among those receiving care from a psychiatrist, in older patients, and in female patients and did not appear to be influenced by racial-ethnic group, economic class, stimulant type, or medication formulation (short or long acting). These findings, which show low rates of medication adherence among children and adolescents with ADHD, suggest the need for efforts to improve these rates.

Abstract
Attention deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) is a common neurodevelopmental disorder with onset in early childhood. It is a clinically heterogenous condition with comorbidity posing a distinct challenge to diagnosing and managing these children and adolescents. This review aims to provide an overview of comorbidity with ADHD including other neurodevelopmental disorders, learning disorders, externalising and internalising disorders. Challenges in screening for, diagnosing and managing comorbidity with ADHD are summarised. Also, methodological challenges and future directions in research in this interesting field are highlighted.

Abstract
INTRODUCTION School violence causes harmful effects to victims. Harmful effects are likely to persist into adulthood. There are many studies about the relationship between attention-deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) and school violence. But, there are few comparative studies dividing groups by the context of bullying and by the school grade. Therefore, this study will identify the differences between general students and patients with ADHD under treatment, creating two groups (one with experience of the perpetration of violence and one with victimization). METHODS This study was conducted by questionnaires that dealt with experiences of being a bully and being bulled at school in the past year as six items each. A 5-point Likert scale was used. The ADHD group was 49, and the general students group was 245. The data were compared using the chi-squared test. Statistical analysis was performed using SPSS version 24, with statistical significance at P < 0.05. RESULTS The ADHD group was significantly high who reported severely beating other people than the general group. Likewise, ADHD group who reported threatening other people was significantly higher than in the general group. However, for the remaining items, there was no significant difference between the ADHD group and the general student group. DISCUSSION Previous studies suggested that ADHD symptoms are major causes of both bullying and being the victim of bullying. However, in this study, ADHD patients have more being the victim of bullying experiences than general students. Further, a well-designed study will be needed to accurately evaluate the relationship between school violence and ADHD.

Abstract
We examined the diagnostic utility of the Cambridge Neuropsychological Test Automated Battery (CANTAB) for identifying adults with attention-deficit/hyperactivity disorder (ADHD). The sample consisted of clinically referred adults aged 18 to 60 years old, with (n = 474) and without (n = 163) DSM-IV diagnosis of ADHD. All subjects were administered seven subtests from the CANTAB that targeted domains of executive functioning and verbal memory. Data were analyzed to identify which CANTAB tasks would best predict ADHD status. Our results failed to show any diagnostic utility for the CANTAB in adults with ADHD, even when using the most robust tests (Affective Go/No-go [AGN] Total Commissions and [RTI] Simple Reaction Time) identified from stepwise logistic regression (forward selection; p > 0.05 for entry). However, the CANTAB was helpful in identifying executive functioning disorder (EFD) in adults with ADHD when compared with controls subjects. Even though the CANTAB lacked diagnostic utility for adults with ADHD, the findings provided further evidence that adult ADHD is strongly associated with EFD. This study represents the most comprehensive evaluation of the diagnostic utility of the CANTAB in a clinical sample of adults with ADHD.
