Abstract
CLINICAL RELEVANCE The support of students with a vision impairment throughout education could be enhanced by assessing the functional reading ability of the individual. This visual assessment could inform educators of individualised student needs and potentially improve the academic achievement for these students. BACKGROUND Support for children with a vision impairment within a classroom is typically based on clinical findings of distance visual acuity and visual fields. Therefore, determining optimal print size for reading is essential to ensure best academic outcomes. Secondary aims were to investigate the possible impact of underlying pathology on reading ability. METHODS Forty-seven participants were recruited from a state-wide support service for children with a vision impairment in South Australia. Three visual acuity groups were formed based on World Health Organisation definitions of mild, moderate, and severe vision impairment. Correlation between clinical measures of distance visual acuity using the Freiburg Visual Acuity Test, were compared with reading acuity and critical print size (smallest font before reading speed reduced) using Minnesota low vision reading chart (MNREAD). RESULTS No significant correlations were found for mild (0.20-0.49 logMAR) and severe (1.00-1.52 logMAR) vision impairment groups between distance visual acuity and reading acuity read (p = .64, CI [-.585, .395]/p = .82, CI [-.48, .58]) or critical print size (p = .78, CI [-.57, .45]/p = .43, CI [-.34, .68]. A significant correlation was found for the moderate vision impairment group: 0.50-0.99 logMAR for minimum reading acuity (p < .001, CI [.44, .91]) and critical print size (p = .03, CI [.05, .80]). CONCLUSIONS Standard clinical measures of distance visual acuity are an unpredictable estimate of reading ability in children with mild and severe vision impairment. Additional measures of functional near reading ability could provide a more meaningful indicator of reading ability and help provide optimum support to students through education.

Abstract
CLINICAL RELEVANCE Children with vision impairment can have difficulty accessing classroom reading material and knowledge of which students are likely to have improved performance reading performance with reverse polarity would be of value to educators. BACKGROUND Printed material is typically presented as black text on a white background; however, reversing the polarity to white text on a black background may improve the reading speed for children with vision impairment. This study sought to identify the visual function or pathological features of children with vision impairment where reversing the polarity of text would improve their reading performance. METHODS Forty-eight vision-impaired participants (27 male), aged 5-18 years with binocular visual acuities between 0.18-1.52 logMAR, were included. Reading performance was assessed by changes in Critical Print Size (ΔCPS), Maximum Reading Speed (ΔMRS) in normal and reverse polarity digital print, and numeric reading speed (ΔNRS) with normal and reverse polarity fonts. Correlations were made with 30 Hz flicker electroretinogram amplitude and high/low contrast acuity. Paired nonparametric tests evaluated significance in pathological condition groups. RESULTS Significant negative correlations were only found between the 30 Hz flicker amplitude and ΔMRS (r = -.42, p = .028) and ΔNRS (r = -.46, p = .027). Follow-up pairwise comparisons based on pathology group only showed a significant effect of the retinal dystrophy group and CPS (n = 12, z = -2.24, p = .025). All other pairwise comparisons based on group were non-significant (p > .05). CONCLUSIONS This study did not identify a specific pathological group or visual functional measure that could be used as a clinical marker to predict the impact of reversing polarity. However, significant improvements could be made in reading performance for some children and so a reading performance assessment is recommended for all children with vision impairment.

Abstract
AIM To investigate the prevalence and clinical manifestations of reading, writing, and mathematics disorders in children with cerebral palsy (CP). We explored how the clinical profile of these children differed from those with specific learning disorders (SLDs), taking into account several factors, particularly IQ scores, neuropsychological aspects, and the presence of a visual impairment. METHOD A prospective cross-sectional study was conducted in 42 children with CP (mean age 9 years 8 months; SD = 2 years 2 months) and 60 children with SLDs (mean age 10 years; SD = 1 year 7 months). Clinical characteristics, neuromotor and cognitive profiles, neuropsychological aspects (speech performance, academic skills, visual attention, phonological awareness, working memory), and signs of visual impairment (visual acuity, contrast sensitivity, visual field, oculomotor functions) were assessed. A machine learning approach consisting of a random forest algorithm, where the outcome was the diagnosis and the covariates were the clinical variables collected in the sample, was used for the analyses. RESULTS About 59% of the children with CP had reading, writing, or mathematics disorders. Children with CP with learning disorders had a low performance IQ, normal phonological awareness, and working memory difficulties, whereas children with SLDs had normal performance IQ, impaired phonological awareness, and mild working memory difficulties. There were no differences in verbal IQ between the two groups. INTERPRETATION Learning disorders are frequently associated with CP, with different clinical characteristics, compared with SLDs. Assessment of academic skills is mandatory in these children, even if the IQ is normal. At school age, specific interventions to promote academic skills in children with CP could be a major rehabilitative goal. WHAT THIS PAPER ADDS Reading, writing, and mathematics disorders in cerebral palsy have specific clinical characteristics. Their underlying mechanisms differ from those described in specific learning disorders. Working memory impairment can be considered a hallmark of learning disorders in children with cerebral palsy.

Abstract
PURPOSE This systematic review evaluates current literature on the impact vision impairment has on reading and literacy levels within education. METHODS Six databases were searched with inclusion criteria of trials or studies involving children who are blind or vision impaired, and impact on academic or school performance - including reading and literacy. 1262 articles were identified, with 61 papers undergoing full screening. Quality appraisal was performed using Critical Appraisal Skills Program (CASP) and seven articles deemed eligible for inclusion. RESULTS Included articles achieved a quality score of over 70 % using the CASP checklists. Direct comparison of articles was not possible due to methodological differences in assessing reading and literacy levels. All seven studies investigated aspects of reading speed, with additional measures of reading performance, such as reading reserve, comprehension, and reading accuracy. DISCUSSION Underlying trends highlighted students with a vision impairment do not perform at same level as their normally sighted peers with respect to reading performance - in terms of speed, but not ability. Additionally, early intervention to enhance literacy skills may help improve educational outcomes. Future direction should be aimed at identifying specific obstacles to learning these students face and providing interventions to improve academic outcomes.

Abstract
This study investigated the accuracy and stability of accommodative and vergence functions in children with and without hyperopia while engaged in two sustained near tasks. The sustained accommodative and vergence characteristics of participants without refractive correction (n = 92, aged 5-10 years) with and without hyperopia (defined as cycloplegic retinoscopy ≥ + 1.00D and less than + 5.00D) were measured using eccentric infrared photorefraction (PowerRef 3; PlusOptix, Germany). Binocular measures of accommodation and eye position were recorded while participants engaged in 2 tasks at 25 cm for 15 min each: (1) reading small print on an Amazon Kindle and (2) watching an animated movie on liquid crystal display screen. Comprehensive visual assessment, including measurement of presenting visual acuity, amplitude of accommodation, and stereoacuity was conducted. The magnitude of accommodative and vergence responses was not related to refractive error (P > 0.05). However, there were inter-task differences in the accuracy and stability of the accommodative responses across refractive groups (P < 0.05). The relationship between accommodation and vergence was not significant in both tasks (P > 0.05). However, increased accommodative and vergence instabilities were associated with total accommodative response (P < 0.05). Despite having greater accommodative demand, uncorrected hyperopes accommodate comparably to emmetropic controls. However, uncorrected hyperopes have increased instabilities in their accommodative and vergence responses, which may adversely impact their visual experience.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Despite being easily corrected with eyeglasses, over two-thirds of the world's child population presents with vision impairment (VI) due to uncorrected refractive errors. While systematic reviews have shown that VI can significantly impact children's depression and anxiety, none have reviewed the existing literature on the association between spectacle correction and well-being. This review aims to address this knowledge gap. MAIN OUTCOME MEASURES The main outcome measures were i) cognitive and education well-being which included mathematics and english literacy, reading fluency, school function, academic performance and grades; ii) psychological and mental health well-being which included physical anxiety, learning anxiety and mental health test scores and iii) quality of life. METHODS We searched eight databases for articles published between 1999 to 2021 that assessed the associations between spectacle correction and children's (0 to 18 years) well-being. There were no restrictions on language or geographic location. Two reviewers independently screened all publications using validated quality checklists. The findings of the review were analysed using narrative synthesis. [PROSPERO CRD42020196847]. RESULTS Of 692 records found in the databases, six randomised control trials, one cohort, one cross-sectional and one qualitative study (N = 9, 1.3%) were eligible for analysis. Data were collected from 25 522 children, 20 parents and 25 teachers across the nine studies. Seven were rated as good quality (67 to 100% of quality criteria fulfilled), and two were satisfactory (33 to 66% of quality criteria fulfilled). Spectacle correction was found to improve children's educational well-being (n = 4 very strong evidence; n = 2 strong evidence), quality of life (n = 1, very strong evidence) and decrease anxiety and increase mental health scores (n = 1, strong evidence). CONCLUSION Evidence suggests that spectacle correction improves children's cognitive and educational well-being, psychological well-being, mental health, and quality of life. More research is needed, given the paucity of published literature and the focus on only three aspects of well-being.

Abstract
INTRODUCTION Despite the known associations between near work and myopia, and retinal image quality and eye growth, accommodation-induced changes in higher order aberrations (HOA's) and retinal image quality in children with different refractive errors are poorly understood. METHODS Ocular HOA's were measured using a Hartmann-Shack wavefront sensor (COAS-HD, Wavefront Sciences) in 18 myopic and 18 age- and sex-matched non-myopic children during short-term accommodation tasks (four demands of 0, 3, 6 and 9 D) presented using a Badal optometer. Eighth order Zernike polynomials were fitted across a 2.3 mm pupil diameter to determine refractive power vectors (M, J180 and J45 ) and the accommodation error, and a 4 mm pupil was used for HOA analyses. Retinal image quality was examined using the visual Strehl ratio based on the optical transfer function (VSOTF) for third to eighth radial orders only. RESULTS Most refractive error group differences were observed for the 6 and 9 D demands. Myopic children underwent greater changes in with-the-rule astigmatism (J180 ), higher order and third order RMS values, primary vertical ( C 3 - 1 $$ {C}_3^{-1} $$ ) and horizontal coma ( C 3 1 $$ {C}_3^1 $$ ), and several other individual Zernike coefficients compared with non-myopic children (all refractive error group by demand interaction p-values of ≤0.02). Non-myopic children exhibited a greater negative shift in primary ( C 4 0 $$ {C}_4^0 $$ ) and positive shift in secondary spherical aberration ( C 6 0 $$ {C}_6^0 $$ ) (both refractive error group by demand interaction p-values of ≤0.002). The VSOTF degraded for the 6 and 9 D demands in both groups, but the myopic children underwent a greater mean (SE) reduction from 0 D of -0.274 (0.048) for the 9 D demand, compared with -0.131 (0.052) for the non-myopic children (p = 0.001). CONCLUSION These results may have implications for the association between near work, accommodation and myopia development, particularly related to the use of short working distances during near tasks.

Abstract
SignificanceHigher prevalence of myopia is possibly associated with more extended schooling schedules. Therefore, adjustments to high school curricula may aid in reducing the prevalence of myopia among adolescents.PurposeTo investigate the prevalence of myopia among 15- to 18-year-old adolescents in Tianjin, China, and to evaluate the impact of different educational schedules on the prevalence of myopia among high school students.MethodsThis is a school-based epidemiological study with a cross-sectional design. Ocular biological parameters and noncycloplegic photorefraction were examined using optical biometry devices and photoscreener devices. Each student’s spherical equivalent (SE) and ocular biometry were recorded, and the prevalence of myopia was calculated.ResultsA total of 2,867 participants (1,519 males and 1,348 females) were tested for non-cycloplegic refraction, axial length (AL), central corneal thickness (CCT), anterior chamber depth (ACD) and lens thickness (LT). In this research, the overall prevalence of myopia was 81.6%, with high myopia accounting for 11.8%. Myopia prevalence was substantially higher in general high schools than in vocational high schools, with 86.1 and 70.1%, respectively. There were no significant differences in the prevalence of myopia (p = 0.744) or high myopia (p = 0.851) across the three vocational school years. In the general high school, however, there was an increase of 4.6% (p < 0.05) in myopia prevalence between year 10 and year12.ConclusionComparing vocational and standard high school students, there are considerable disparities in prevalence of myopia, spherical equivalent, and ocular biological parameters. The prevalence of myopia and high myopia increased among standard high school students, but remained relatively consistent among students in vocational schools.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Proper vision is absolutely critical to children's academic performance, as vision problems can drastically affect learning ability. Currently, the existing literature in this field is somewhat inconsistent and carries several controversies about the influence of vision on academic performance. In this study, citation networks were utilized in order to analyze the relationship between publications and authors, the most-cited publication, and the different research areas. Additionally, the most commonly utilized publication sources along with the most common research areas were also pinpointed. METHODS The aforementioned search was executed in the Web of Science database, with a time range beginning in 1941 and ending in 2022. In order to scrutinize the publications, VOSviewer, CiteSpace software, and the Citation Network Explorer were utilized for analysis about the most-cited publication and the different research areas. RESULTS Overall, 1342 papers were found in all fields along with 2187 citation networks. Moreover, 2020 was the year with the most publications, including 127 publications and 4 citation networks. Bull et al., published in 2008, was the most-cited work, reaching a citation index of 975. The clustering function managed to identity four groups with the most engaging research topics from researchers: motor visual skills, visual memory, the influence of vision on the different learning styles, and abnormal development of the visual system. CONCLUSIONS In the end, the topic with the greatest interest was the influence of visual motor skills on academic performance. Ideally, this paper will assist fellow researchers in quickly noting which topics are of greatest interest and how research in this area has evolved.

Abstract
PURPOSE More time spent on near tasks has consistently been associated with the promotion of myopia. The World Health Organization advises limiting daily screentime to less than 2 h for children aged five and over. This study explored the relationship between time spent on screens and reading/writing with refractive status, ocular biometric and anthropometric factors in 6- to 7-year-olds in Ireland. METHODS Participants were 723 schoolchildren (377 boys [51.8%]), mean age 7.08 (0.45) years. The examination included cycloplegic autorefraction (1% cyclopentolate hydrochloride), ocular biometry (Zeiss IOLMaster), height (cm) and weight (kg). Screentime and reading/writing time were reported by parents/legal guardians by questionnaire. Myopia (≤-0.50D) and premyopia (>-0.50D ≤ 0.75D) risk assessments were performed using logistic regression, and multivariate linear regression was used to analyse continuous variables. RESULTS Reported daily screentimes were 31% <1 h, 49.5% 1-2 h, 15.6% 2-4 h and 3.9% >4 h. Reading/writing times were 42.2% frequently, 48.0% infrequently and 9.8% seldom/never. Linear regression, controlling for age and ethnicity, revealed >2 h/day on screens was associated with a more myopic spherical equivalent [β = -1.15 (95% confidence intervals {CIs}: 1.62-0.69, p < 0.001)], increased refractive astigmatism (β = 0.29, CI: 0.06-0.51, p = 0.01), shorter corneal radius (β = 0.12, CI: 0.02-0.22, p = 0.02), higher axial length/corneal radius (β = 0.06, CI: 0.03-0.09, p < 0.001), heavier weight (β = 1.60, CI: 0.76-2.45, p < 0.001) and higher body mass index (BMI) (β = 1.10, CI: 0.28-1.12, p < 0.001). Logistic regression, controlling for age and ethnicity, revealed daily screentime >2 h was associated with myopia (OR = 10.9, CI: 4.4-27.2, p = 0.01) and premyopia (OR = 2.4, CI: 1.5-3.7, p < 0.001). Frequent reading/writing was associated with screentime ≤2 h/day (OR = 3.2, CI: 1.8-5.8, p < 0.001). CONCLUSION Increased screentime was associated with a more myopic refraction, higher axial length/corneal radius ratio, increased odds of myopia, premyopia, higher degrees of astigmatism, increased weight, BMI and decreased reading/writing time. Dedicated education programmes promoting decreased screentime in children are vital to prevent myopia and support eye and general health.

Abstract
Purpose To determine the prevalence and causes of visual impairment (VI) in Shiraz schoolchildren aged between 6 and 12 years. Methods In the present population-based study, stratified random sampling was used to select 2400 schoolchildren aged 6-12 years from all four educational districts of Shiraz, Iran. Using the definitions of the World Health Organization, VI was defined as best-corrected visual acuity (BCVA) ≤0.5 logMAR (20/60) in the better eye, and blindness as BCVA worse than 1.3 logMAR (20/400) in the better eye. The low vision was defined as BCVA equal to or worse than 0.5 logMAR (20/60) in either eye. Data were recorded from a detailed interview and ocular examination of each eligible student. Results The mean age of the students was 9.1 ± 1.6 years. The prevalence of VI was 3/2001 (0.14%). The cause of VI in all these three patients (100%) was amblyopia due to high refractive errors (high ametropia and astigmatism). Regarding the main refractive errors leading to VI among these three patients, one patient had bilateral high hyperopia (compound hyperopic astigmatism), one of them had bilateral high astigmatism, and the other one had compound myopic astigmatism. According to a visual acuity of less than or equal to 20/60 in at least one eye, 9/2001 (0.4%) of children had low vision. Conclusions This study revealed a low prevalence of VI in a sample of 6- to 12-year-old school-aged children. Amblyopia in the setting of high ametropia and astigmatism were the most common causes of VI.

Habitual visual acuity and visual acuity threshold demands in Nigerian school classrooms. Sci Rep 2022; 12:17816. Abstract
This study was designed to estimate the burden of blindness and vision impairment in school children, and to determine the proportion of students meeting the visual acuity (VA) demand for their classrooms. From 148 primary and secondary school classrooms in Edo State, Nigeria, the habitual distance and near VA of over 2000 students were measured. Values obtained were compared with the calculated distance VA demand and actual near VA demand for their classrooms. Measures used to calculate the VA demand were working distance and smallest text size on learning materials, at both distance and near. We also determined the relationship between age and calculated VA demand and the effect of factors such as school ownership and school type on the VA demand. Habitual distance vision impairment was found in 0.8% of pupils, including 2 (0.10%) who met the WHO criteria for blindness. The average VA demand at the furthest and nearest sitting position to the board was 0.21 ± 0.23 and 0.65 ± 0.33LogMAR, respectively. Near working distance of students ranged from 15.00 to 37.20 cm, and the near VA demand as well as actual near VA demand (using a 2.5 times acuity reserve) was 0.60 ± 0.17 and 0.20 ± 1.7LogMAR, respectively. LogMAR VA demand increased (size of print decreases) with increasing age, at both distance (r = - 0.549, p = 0.070) and near (r = - 0.921, p < 0.0001). The VA demand at maximum distance and the actual near VA demand differed significantly by school ownership and between primary and secondary schools. Most students had VA better, but up to 11% of students per class had VA poorer than their classroom demands. Although the majority of students had better VA than their classroom demands, for students with reduced vision, learning could be negatively impacted. It is important to continually screen students for vision impairment and ensure prompt referral and treatment. These findings have implications for managing vision problems in children, as well as enabling appropriate classroom arrangements for those with vision impairment.

Abstract
Objectives: To investigate the changes of vision, including the prevalence of myopia, hyperopia, poor vision, and the spherical equivalent refraction (SER), in school-aged children before and after the pandemic of Coronavirus Disease 2019 (COVID-19). Methods: A school-based vision screening study was performed on children in 133 primary schools in Wuhan. This study was conducted in 4 consecutive years (2018–2021). Results: A total of 468,094 children (936,188 eyes) were recruited, 255,863 (54.7%) were boys. The SER decreased in 2020 compared to other years after the age of 10. A positive myopia shift was found in younger children aged 6 (0.1 D), 7 (0.05D), and 8 (0.03 D) in 2020 compared to 2019. The progression of vision has improved slightly in 2021. Among the students included in the study, 33.7% were myopia. Conclusion: The vision of older children decreased significantly during the COVID-19. After the pandemic, there is still a high risk for them. In the future, the focus on vision prevention and control should move forward to preschool children.

Abstract
The relationship between vision and academic performance has been discussed for a long time, with special emphasis on visual factors associated with learning problems. The objective of this pilot study is to obtain an initial idea about the evolution and the impact of refractive errors on school-aged children. A visual examination was performed on 252 children between the ages of 6 and 11 years, which consisted of objective refraction, subjective refraction, and accommodative and binocular tests. No significant differences were observed regarding the refractive state when taking academic performance into account (p > 0.05). However, it was determined that academic performance was better among children with a negative spherical equivalent. Studies with a larger sample size must be conducted to verify the results that were attained in this present pilot study, and these must likewise look at possible ways in which strategies can be implemented in schools to reduce myopia progression.

Abstract
Background Amblyopic eyes typically exhibit greater lag of accommodation. Whether this improves after amblyopia treatment is inconclusive. The aim of this study is to report post-treatment accommodative response in amblyopia and to investigate if the lag is associated with visual acuity, treatment duration, and amblyopia type. Methods Monocular and binocular accommodative responses were measured using Nott's method of dynamic retinoscopy in amblyopia of anisometropic, strabismic, and combined anisometropic-strabismic types and age-matched controls with normal vision. The results were compared using the nonparametric Wilcoxon signed ranks test. Linear regression analysis was used to examine association of the lag to refractive error, duration of therapy, and visual acuity. Results Mean ± SD age of 46 amblyopic and 20 control subjects were 6.9 ± 1.8 and 6.9 ± 2.2 years, respectively. At the time of the study, 30 amblyopic subjects were receiving patching therapy and ceased in the remainder. In amblyopic eyes, mean ± SD monocular and binocular lags were 1.2 ± 0.6D and 1.0 ± 0.5D (p < 0.001), respectively, compared to 0.6 ± 0.3D and 0.5 ± 0.2D (p < 0.005), respectively, in nonamblyopic eyes and 0.4 ± 0.2D and 0.3 ± 0.2D (p=0.093), respectively, in the controls. By types, the monocular lag was significantly higher than the binocular lag (p=0.001) in mixed amblyopia (p=0.004); they were similar in anisometropic (p=0.283) and strabismic (p=0.743) amblyopia. Monocular lag was significantly correlated to BCVA (r = 0.46; p=0.001) and refraction (r = 0.42; p=0.001) but not to patching duration (r = 0.1; p=0.280). Conclusion Inadequate accommodative response, a higher lag, persists in amblyopic eyes even after the treatment. Impaired accommodative response is partly determined by posttherapy visual acuity. Further studies investigating the effect of accommodative lag on visual recovery and whether optical correction of the deficiency may improve visual outcome of the treatment are recommended.

Abstract
Purpose Axial length increases during accommodation in adults and children; however, refractive error group differences are conflicting and have not been explored in pediatric populations. This study aimed to evaluate differences in accommodation-induced axial elongation between myopic and nonmyopic children. Methods A range of ocular biometric measurements were captured during brief accommodation tasks (0, 3, 6, and 9 D) using a Badal optometer mounted to a noncontact optical biometer (Zeiss IOLMaster 700). Reliable measurements were captured for 15 myopic and 15 age- and sex-matched nonmyopic children. The average central corneal thickness (CCT), anterior chamber depth (ACD), crystalline lens thickness (LT), anterior segment length (ASL), vitreous chamber depth (VCD), and axial length (AL) were determined for each accommodation stimulus. Raw measurements of AL and VCD were corrected for the estimated error associated with LT increases during accommodation. Results All biometric parameters, except CCT, changed significantly during accommodation (all P < 0.001). Myopic children exhibited significantly greater accommodation-induced axial elongation than nonmyopic children (P = 0.002) at the 3, 6, and 9 D accommodation stimuli, with a mean difference of 7, 10, and 16 µm, respectively (all pairwise comparisons, P ≤ 0.03). The changes in all other biometric parameters were not different between the refractive error groups (P ≥ 0.23). Conclusions Accommodation-induced axial elongation was greater in myopic than nonmyopic children. This finding could support a potential mechanism linking near work, axial elongation, and myopia development in children or may reflect greater susceptibility to accommodation-induced axial elongation in children with established myopia.

Abstract
SIGNIFICANCE Wearable sensors provide the opportunity for continuous objective measurement of the visual environment with high resolution. Our findings show that absolute and temporal properties of near viewing and time outdoors vary between myopic and nonmyopic schoolchildren, which are important considerations when studying refractive error pathogenesis. PURPOSE Numerous behavioral factors, including near work, time outdoors, electronic device use, and sleep, have been linked to myopia. The purpose of this study was to assess behaviors using subjective and objective methods in myopic and nonmyopic schoolchildren in the United States. METHODS Forty children (aged 14.6 ± 0.4 years) simultaneously wore two sensors for 1 week, a Clouclip for objective measurement of near viewing and light exposure and an Actiwatch for objective measurement of activity and sleep. Parents completed an activity questionnaire for their child. Near-viewing distance, daily duration, short-duration (>1 minute) and long-duration (>30 minutes) near-viewing episodes, light exposure, time outdoors, electronic device use, and sleep duration were analyzed by refractive error group and day of the week. RESULTS Objectively measured daily near-viewing duration was 6.9 ± 0.3 hours. Myopes spent more time in near + intermediate viewing than nonmyopes (P = .008) and had higher diopter hours (P = .03). Short- and long-duration near-viewing episodes were similar between groups (P < .05 for both). Daily light exposure and time outdoors were significantly lower for myopes (P < .05 for both). Electronic device use (12.0 ± 0.7 hours per day) and sleep duration (8.2 ± 0.2 hours per night) were similar between groups (P > .05 for both). CONCLUSIONS Objective and subjective measures confirm that myopic and nonmyopic schoolchildren exhibit different behaviors. Combining wearable sensors with questionnaires provides a comprehensive description of children's visual environment to better understand factors that contribute to myopia.

Abstract
PURPOSE To assess the impact of uncorrected hyperopia and hyperopic spectacle correction on children's academic performance. DESIGN Systematic review and meta-analysis. METHODS We searched 9 electronic databases from inception to July 26, 2021, for studies assessing associations between hyperopia and academic performance. There were no restrictions on language, publication date, or geographic location. A quality checklist was applied. Random-effects models estimated pooled effect size as a standardized mean difference (SMD) in 4 outcome domains: cognitive skills, educational performance, reading skills, and reading speed. (PROSPERO registration: CRD-42021268972). RESULTS Twenty-five studies (21 observational and 4 interventional) out of 3415 met the inclusion criteria. No full-scale randomized trials were identified. Meta-analyses of the 5 studies revealed a small but significant adverse effect on educational performance in uncorrected hyperopic compared to emmetropic children {SMD -0.18 [95% confidence interval (CI), -0.27 to -0.09]; P < 0.001, 4 studies} and a moderate negative effect on reading skills in uncorrected hyperopic compared to emmetropic children [SMD -0.46 (95% CI, -0.90 to -0.03); P = 0.036, 3 studies]. Reading skills were significantly worse in hyperopic than myopic children [SMD -0.29 (95% CI, -0.43 to -0.15); P < 0.001, 1 study]. Qualitative analysis on 10 (52.6%) of 19 studies excluded from meta-analysis found a significant (P < 0.05) association between uncorrected hyperopia and impaired academic performance. Two interventional studies found hyperopic spectacle correction significantly improved reading speed (P < 0.05). CONCLUSIONS Evidence indicates that uncorrected hyperopia is associated with poor academic performance. Given the limitations of current methodologies, further research is needed to evaluate the impact on academic performance of providing hyperopic correction.

Abstract
Changes in higher order aberrations (HOA's) and retinal image quality during accommodation have not previously been examined in children. This study measured ocular HOA's in ninety non-myopic, school-aged children during short-term accommodation tasks at 0, 3, 6, and 9 D demands presented via a Badal optometer mounted to a Hartmann-Shack wavefront aberrometer (COAS-HD, Wavefront Sciences). Eighty-four participants who exhibited active accommodation were included in the analyses. An eighth order Zernike polynomial was fit across a 2.3 mm, 4 mm, and natural pupil diameter to evaluate changes in refractive power vectors (M, J180, and J45), accommodation errors (lags and leads), HOA root mean square (RMS) variables, individual Zernike coefficients, and the visual Strehl ratio based on the optical transfer function (VSOTF). All HOA RMS variables changed significantly with accommodation, with the greatest change observed for the 9 D demand. Of the individual Zernike coefficients, primary (C40) and secondary spherical aberration (C60) exhibited the greatest magnitude of change, becoming negative and positive with increasing accommodation, respectively. The VSOTF changed significantly with greater accommodation for both the 4 mm and natural pupil size, becoming significantly worse for the 9 D demand. HOA's increase and retinal image quality decreases significantly during higher levels of accommodation in children, similar to adults. These findings provide a greater understanding of the optical properties of children's eyes and insights into possible mechanisms for the association between accommodation, near work, and refractive error development.

Abstract
PURPOSE To investigate the influence of brief, repeated periods of clear vision on the changes in axial length and choroidal thickness in response to short-term imposed defocus. METHODS The right eye of 16 young adults was exposed to 60 min episodes of continuous and interrupted defocus conditions (+3 DS and -3 DS) over five separate sessions, with the left eye optimally corrected for distance. For interrupted defocus, 2 min episodes of clear vision were imposed before each 15 min episode of myopic or hyperopic defocus (2/15 min). For hyperopic defocus, the effect of frequency of clear vision exposure was also assessed by imposing 1 min of clear vision before each 7.5 min of defocus (1/7.5 min). The right eye axial length and choroidal thickness were measured before, during and after each defocus condition. RESULTS After 60 min of continuous hyperopic defocus the eye elongated significantly by +9 ± 9 μm (p = 0.02). When exposed to interrupted (2/15 min) hyperopic defocus, axial elongation was significantly reduced by 77% compared to continuous hyperopic defocus (p = 0.03), with a final change of only +2 ± 10 μm relative to baseline. During interrupted (1/7.5 min) hyperopic defocus, axial elongation reduced slightly compared to continuous hyperopic defocus (+6 ± 8 μm relative to baseline, p = 0.12). For continuous myopic defocus, a reduction in axial length occurred but was not statistically significant (p > 0.05). A similar pattern of response was observed for choroidal thickness changes with continuous and interrupted (1/7.5 min) hyperopic defocus conditions. CONCLUSIONS Brief periods of clear vision can diminish axial elongation and choroidal thinning induced by hyperopic defocus exposure in human eyes. If hyperopic defocus contributes to myopia progression in humans, then interruption with brief periods of clear vision could reduce its myopiagenic effects.

Abstract
Reading is essential for learning, from literature to physics, from paper to screens on e-readers and smart phones. Even if it is well known that learning to read implies good language skills, children also need to develop good oculomotor and visual-perception skills. Thereby, any deficits in visual processing may affect learning. The possible impact of visual deficits is rarely considered, especially with regard to eye movements and visual perception. Hence, these deficits are usually discovered much later or remain undiagnosed. The present study aimed at assessing the usefulness of visual processing related measures in the early detection of reading difficulties. Visual skill differences that are apparent early in kindergarten might provide predictive insights into risk for learning difficulties at school entry. We used a prospective, longitudinal approach where visual processes (assessed with the Developmental Eye Movement (DEM) test) were measured in 51 preschoolers, and the impact of these processes on future reading development was explored one year later, in Grade 1. Results showed that (1) 31% of our sample of preschoolers showed visual processing impairments (without any clinical complaints) and (2) reading accuracy and speed in first graders were significantly correlated with visual skills assessed in kindergarten, thus confirming the significant role of oculomotor and visual-perception processes in the acquisition of reading skills. These suggests the potential for these measures to be used clinically for identifying children at risk for low academic achievement, enabling appropriate targeting of early interventions.

Abstract
PURPOSE The purpose of this study was to evaluate the effects of amblyopia on children's reading performance after the successful patching treatment with 20/20 visual acuity (VA) in the treated eye. METHODS The treated amblyopes group included 10 children with strabismic amblyopia diagnosed on the first visit presenting VA equal or better than 0.0 logMAR (20/20 Snellen) in the better vision eye and VA worse than 0.2 logMAR (20/32 Snellen) in the worse eye that underwent patching treatment of amblyopia reaching a final VA equal to 0.0 logMAR in the treated eye. The control group comprised 10 children matched by age, gender and school-grade with no visual disorders. Reading performance was evaluated according to reading acuity (RA), critical print size (CPS), reading speed (RS) at 0.7 logMAR, and maximum reading speed (MRS) using the MNREAD chart. RESULTS Binocular reading performance was compared between groups and no statistically significant differences were found on RA, CPS, RS, or MRS (p > 0.05). When analyzing monocular reading performances of treated amblyopes, a worse RA (p = 0.04) and CPS (p = 0.04) were observed on the previously amblyopic eye when compared to the fellow eye. When comparing the fellow eye from treated amblyopes and a randomly selected eye from controls, no statistically significant differences on RA, CPS, RS, or MRS were found (p > 0.05). CONCLUSIONS The results suggest that even patients who reached 20/20 VA in the treated eye after patching treatment for amblyopia may present persistent impaired reading performance. These findings reinforce the importance of reading performance testing as a tool when evaluating the visual function development in amblyopic patients.

Abstract
SIGNIFICANCE This study is the first to report high rates of uncorrected vision conditions among Australian secondary schoolchildren living in a rural area and to comment on the rate of eye examinations undertaken on Australian Indigenous children. Uncorrected vision problems that continue throughout the school years have significant implications for children's quality of life and education. PURPOSE This study aimed to investigate the prevalence of uncorrected vision conditions among Australian schoolchildren. METHODS Participants included 280 students from rural primary and secondary schools (aged 4 to 18 years), of whom 40% identified as being of Aboriginal and/or Torres Strait Islander descent (Indigenous). All participants underwent an eye examination including measurements of monocular distance and near visual acuity, assessment of accommodative and vergence function, stereoacuity, color vision, and cycloplegic autorefraction. A parental questionnaire was used to determine whether the child had previously had his/her eyes examined. RESULTS The overall prevalence of uncorrected vision conditions in this population was 35%. The odds of previously having had an eye examination were 2.3× higher for non-Indigenous compared with Indigenous children despite both groups exhibiting high rates of uncorrected vision conditions (Indigenous, 31 [29%]; non-Indigenous, 66 [40%]; χ21 = 3.24, P = .07). Of the children who had significant refractive error (Indigenous, 23 [21%]; non-Indigenous, 49 [30%]; χ21 = 2.70, P = .10), 82% were uncorrected, and only 39% of Indigenous children and 54% of non-Indigenous children had previously had an eye examination. CONCLUSIONS These findings suggest that high rates of uncorrected vision conditions are present among Australian primary and secondary schoolchildren from a rural area and highlight that Indigenous children are much less likely to have had an eye examination. Understanding factors that affect the rate of eye examinations and compliance with spectacle correction must be addressed given the potential impact of these vision conditions.

Abstract
PURPOSE To address the knowledge gap regarding the actual acuity requirements needed in typical kindergarten through grade 12 classrooms by determining an actual logarithm of the minimum angle of resolution (logMAR) and contrast sensitivity requirements in a sample of classrooms for kindergarten through grade 12 in New York City. METHODS Measurements of classroom dimensions with specific attention to viewing distances were made in public and private school classrooms, at various grade levels from kindergarten through grade 12, in New York City. The dimensions of typical text shown to students on classroom smartboards and whiteboards was measured and the mean and range of logMAR values were calculated for various seating locations within the classrooms. Contrast between text and background was estimated by comparing digital images of actual classroom text to Pelli-Robson contrast sensitivity charts. RESULTS Fourteen classrooms in five schools were evaluated. Classroom dimensions varied from 8 × 10 feet to 23 × 23 feet. Mean logMAR values of lower case text on smartboards and whiteboards varied from 0.93 ± 0.29 (range: 0.83 to 1.32) in the center of the front row to 0.46 ± 0.21 (range: 0.10 to 0.79) in the center of the back row (P < .001). Contrast was also variable, being highest for black markers on whiteboards (0.00) and lowest on smartboards (0.15 to 0.60). Neither logMAR nor contrast sensitivity values varied significantly by grade level or school (P > .50 for both). CONCLUSIONS The data reveal that logMAR demands and contrast vary substantially from classroom to classroom and within a classroom based on room dimensions and seating. Although generally supporting current acuity-based pediatric vision screening referral guidelines, the data also provide insight into the potential impact of reduced visual acuity and seating location on visual performance in the classroom. These findings suggest the need to develop logMAR and contrast standards that optimize visual content in classrooms while accommodating a wider range of visual capabilities. Abstract
Purpose: Poor vision is prevalent in school-aged students, especially in East Asia. This can not only cause irreversibly physical health impairments like glaucoma and cataracts, but also the loss of individual education and employment opportunities and deterioration of the quality of life. The present study aims to investigate the associations between poor vision, vision-related risk behaviors, and mathematics achievement in youth from China. Methods: The present study included a total of 106,192 Grade 4 students and 70,236 Grade 8 students from the China National Assessment of Educational Quality-Physical Education & Health 2015 (CNAEQ-PEH 2015). We conducted a standard logarithmic visual acuity scale for vision screening, a self-reported questionnaire for vision-related risk behavior and a standardized mathematics assessment for mathematics performance. Poor vision is defined as the visual acuity below 5.0 by using the standard logarithmic visual acuity chart. Linear regression was conducted. Results: The prevalence rate of poor vision in China was 37.1% in Grade 4 and 66.2% in Grade 8 in 2015. Students who had poor vision were more likely to have better mathematics achievement than those with normal vision. Reading in bed, insufficient sleep, and screen time during weekdays and weekends were associated with higher odds of poor vision. Conclusions: Poor vision was positively associated with mathematics academic achievements, while vision-related risk behaviors such as screen time, homework time and reading in bed were associated with a high prevalence of poor vision in compulsory education cycle students.

Abstract
Background The Beery-Buktenica Test of Visual-Motor Integration (Beery VMI) is a commonly used standardized test of visual-motor integration. Performance on the test is related to academic achievement, but the effect of reduced visual acuity on test results is unknown. This study determined the visual acuity demand and the spacing of the test forms for the Beery VMI and its supplemental tests and investigated the effect of induced optical blur on test results in both adults and children. Methods The overall size and critical detail size of each form and the distance between the center of each form and its adjacent crowding source were measured. The visual acuity demand and angular separation of forms were calculated. Two groups of participants (adults aged ≥18 years [n = 19] and children aged 7–12 years [n = 20]) completed four sessions in which they performed the Beery VMI and the supplemental tests under different blur conditions (habitual near correction, monocular spherical blur, binocular spherical blur and binocular astigmatic blur) in a randomized order. Results Stroke width, overall form size and box size remained constant throughout the Beery VMI, whereas these reduced with increasing difficulty for the supplemental tests. Reduced near visual acuity from simulated blur resulted in reduced mean scores for the Beery VMI and its supplemental tests, compared with habitual near vision in both adults and children. Binocular spherical blur had the most detrimental effect (p<0.001), followed by binocular astigmatic blur (p<0.001) then monocular spherical blur (p = 0.022). Conclusions In individuals with uncorrected spherical or astigmatic ametropia, reduced scores on the Beery VMI and its supplemental tests may be due to impaired near visual acuity and not reflect reduced visual-motor abilities. This highlights the importance of excluding reduced near visual acuity as a cause of reduced performance before diagnosing impairment and initiating treatment strategies for visual-motor integration.

Abstract
PURPOSE This study evaluated the association between performance on visual information processing tests and academic performance in school children. METHODS Visual-motor integration (VMI), the Developmental Eye Movement (DEM) test, visual acuity and stereoacuity were assessed in 222 Grade 2 children (mean age: 7.90 ± 0.33 years). Academic performance was assessed using standardized tests of reading and mathematics (PAT-R and PAT-M). Linear regression analyses examined associations between visual information processing (VMI and DEM) and academic measures, adjusting for school socio-economic background and age. Receiver operating characteristic (ROC) analysis was used to assess the ability of the tests to identify children with below average academic performance. RESULTS Visual-motor integration (VMI) and DEM (horizontal time) were most strongly associated with PAT-R and PAT-M. Linear regression models explained 28.6% of variance in PAT-R (VMI: standardized regression coefficient = 0.31, p < 0.01; DEM horizontal time: -0.28, p < 0.01) and 24.1% of variance in PAT-M (VMI: standardized regression coefficient = 0.29, p < 0.01; DEM horizontal time: -0.16, p = 0.02). Receiver operating characteristic (ROC) curve analysis indicated that VMI was most strongly associated with below average PAT-R (area under curve [AUC] of 0.74 [95% CI: 0.67-0.81]) and PAT-M (AUC of 0.73 [95% CI: 0.66-0.81]). CONCLUSION Visual-motor integration (VMI) was most strongly associated with reading and mathematics scores in school children. A child's academic performance can be an important factor in their optometric management. The ability of clinical tests to identify children at risk of underachieving academically provides additional support to clinicians in managing their patients.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Undetected vision problems is an important cause of reduced academic achievement, performance in everyday life and self-esteem. This receives little attention in national health care services in Norway even though most of these vision problems are easily correctable. There are no published data on how many Norwegian schoolchildren are affected by correctable vision problems. This study aims to determine the vision status in primary and secondary schoolchildren referred from vision screening during the 10 year period of 2003-2013. METHODS Of the 1126 children (15%) aged 7-15 years referred to the university eye clinic by the school screening program, all 782 who attended the eye clinic were included in the study. Patient records were retrospectively reviewed with regard to symptoms, refractive error, best corrected visual acuity (BCVA) of logMAR, binocular vision, ocular health and management outcomes. RESULTS Previously undetected vision problems were confirmed in 650 (83%) of the children. The most frequent outcomes were glasses (346) or follow-up (209), but types of treatment modalities varied with age. Mean refractive errors were hyperopic for all age groups but reduced with age (ANOVA, p < 0.001). Overall, 51% were hyperopic, 32% emmetropic and 17% myopic. Refractive errors did not change across the decade (linear regression, all p > 0.05). Mean logMAR BCVAs were better than 0.0 and improved with age (ANOVA, p < 0.001). The most prevalent symptoms were headaches (171), near vision problems (149) and reduced distance vision (107). CONCLUSIONS The vision screening identified children with previously undetected visual problems. This study shows that the types of visual problems varied with age and that most problems could be solved with glasses. Our results stress the importance of regular eye examinations and that vision examinations should be included in primary health care services. Furthermore, there is a need for raised awareness among parents and teaching staff regarding vision problems in children.

Abstract
Background The key visual factors in a classroom environment include the legibility, angle subtended at the eye, illumination, contrast, and colour of the visual task. The study evaluated the visual environmental factors in the school classrooms. Materials and methods The distance Visual Acuity (VA) demand was evaluated based on the size of visual task i.e. the smallest size of chalkboard writing and its viewing distance. The environmental factors which can have an effect on the visibility in classrooms such as illuminance on the chalkboard and at student’s desk, chalkboard contrast, light sources and the student’s perception of their classroom visual environment were measured. To quantify the distance VA demand and to compare with a standard high contrast VA chart measure, a validation of the measurements was performed by chalkboard simulation experiment. The “acuity reserve” to be included to the measured distance VA demand was evaluated. Results We included twenty-nine classrooms of eight schools. The median distance VA threshold demand was 0.28 logMAR(0.25,0.45). The median illuminance on front desk position and chalkboard contrast was 130 lux(92,208) and 40(36,50) respectively with 62% classrooms having low illumination (<150lux). The acuity reserve evaluated to be included to the distance VA demand was 0.13logMAR and 0.29 logMAR in classrooms with optimal and low chalkboard illumination respectively which was based on the results of the simulation experiment. The median distance VA demand including the acuity reserve was 0.09 logMAR(-0.03,0.23) [Snellen Equivalent: 20/25(20/19,20/34)]. Conclusion The study findings highlight the increased visual task demand in school classrooms and the need for appropriate seating arrangements in classrooms based on the visual acuity of children. The study emphasises regular audit of the classroom environment along with the school eye screening.

Abstract
Purpose: Compliance to spectacle wear is vital to elimination of avoidable blindness among schoolchildren. This study aims to understand the barriers to compliance and strategies to overcome the barriers from the perspectives of the service providers of the school vision-screening model. Methods: A snapshot qualitative study using focus group discussions (FGDs) was conducted among the service providers including eye care professionals (ECPs) and social workers that are part of the school screening program. Sessions were audio recorded and transcribed. Themes were formed following inductive coding using a conceptual framework. Results: Out of the three FGDs, two were with ECPs and one with social workers. Four subthemes identified under the barriers were poor awareness, spectacle-related, psychosocial, and financial barriers. Unique barriers according to the service providers included nonuse of spectacles by asymptomatic children, children with unilateral refractive errors and those with emmetropic parents. Service providers also brought out parent's feelings of guilt, doubts about their children's impaired vision, the negative self-image among children, and difficulties in obtaining funding to support the costs of screening. Solutions that emerged included the personal visit of professionals for spectacle distribution and counseling parents, demonstration of improvement in vision for activities that were difficult for the children without spectacles and rewarding, and role modeling of compliant children. Conclusion: This study had identified unique barriers and solutions from the perspectives of the service providers. The suggested strategies would aid in an effective schoolchildren vision screening practice to enhance compliance to spectacle wear.

Abstract
OBJECTIVES To determine the impact of adherence to spectacle wear on visual acuity (VA) and developing literacy following vision screening at age 4-5 years. DESIGN Longitudinal study nested within the Born in Bradford birth cohort. SETTING AND PARTICIPANTS Observation of 944 children: 432 had failed vision screening and were referred (treatment group) and 512 randomly selected (comparison group) who had passed (<0.20 logarithm of the minimum angle of resolution (logMAR) in both eyes). Spectacle wear was observed in school for 2 years following screening and classified as adherent (wearing spectacles at each assessment) or non-adherent. MAIN OUTCOME MEASURES Annual measures of VA using a crowded logMAR test. Literacy was measured by Woodcock Reading Mastery Tests-Revised subtest: letter identification. RESULTS The VA of all children improved with increasing age, -0.009 log units per month (95% CI -0.011 to -0.007) (worse eye). The VA of the adherent group improved significantly more than the comparison group, by an additional -0.008 log units per month (95% CI -0.009 to -0.007) (worse eye) and -0.004 log units per month (95% CI -0.005 to -0.003) in the better eye.Literacy was associated with the VA, letter identification (ID) reduced by -0.9 (95% CI -1.15 to -0.64) for every one line (0.10 logMAR) fall in VA (better eye). This association remained after adjustment for socioeconomic and demographic factors (-0.33, 95% CI -0.54 to -0.12). The adherent group consistently demonstrated higher letter-ID scores compared with the non-adherent group, with the greatest effect size (0.11) in year 3. CONCLUSIONS Early literacy is associated with the level of VA; children who adhere to spectacle wear improve their VA and also have the potential to improve literacy. Our results suggest failure to adhere to spectacle wear has implications for the child's vision and education.

Abstract
Purpose: The study aimed to evaluate the classroom environment of children with low vision and provide recommendations to reduce visual stress, with focus on mainstream schooling. Methods: The medical records of 110 children (5–17 years) seen in low vision clinic during 1 year period (2015) at a tertiary care center in south India were extracted. The visual function levels of children were compared to the details of their classroom environment. The study evaluated and recommended the chalkboard visual task size and viewing distance required for children with mild, moderate, and severe visual impairment (VI). Results: The major causes of low vision based on the site of abnormality and etiology were retinal (80%) and hereditary (67%) conditions, respectively, in children with mild (n = 18), moderate (n = 72), and severe (n = 20) VI. Many of the children (72%) had difficulty in viewing chalkboard and common strategies used for better visibility included copying from friends (47%) and going closer to chalkboard (42%). To view the chalkboard with reduced visual stress, a child with mild VI can be seated at a maximum distance of 4.3 m from the chalkboard, with the minimum size of visual task (height of lowercase letter writing on chalkboard) recommended to be 3 cm. For 3/60–6/60 range, the maximum viewing distance with the visual task size of 4 cm is recommended to be 85 cm to 1.7 m. Conclusion: Simple modifications of the visual task size and seating arrangements can aid children with low vision with better visibility of chalkboard and reduced visual stress to manage in mainstream schools.

Abstract
Background Visual demands of school children tend to vary with diverse classroom environments. The study aimed to evaluate the distance and near Visual Acuity (VA) demand in Indian school classrooms and their comparison with the recommended vision standards. Materials and methods The distance and near VA demands were assessed in 33 classrooms (grades 4 to 12) of eight schools. The VA threshold demand relied on the smallest size of distance and near visual task material and viewing distance. The logMAR equivalents of minimum VA demand at specific seating positions (desk) and among different grades were evaluated. The near threshold was converted into actual near VA demand by including the acuity reserve. The existing dimensions of chalkboard and classroom, gross area in a classroom per student and class size in all the measured classrooms were compared to the government recommended standards. Results In 33 classrooms assessed (35±10 students per room), the average distance and near logMAR VA threshold demand was 0.31±0.17 and 0.44±0.14 respectively. The mean distance VA demand (minimum) in front desk position was 0.56±0.18 logMAR. Increased distance threshold demand (logMAR range -0.06, 0.19) was noted in 7 classrooms (21%). The mean VA demand in grades 4 to 8 and grades 9 to 12 was 0.35±0.16 and 0.24±0.16 logMAR respectively and the difference was not statistically significant (p = 0.055). The distance from board to front desk was greater than the recommended standard of 2.2m in 27 classrooms (82%). The other measured parameters were noted to be different from the proposed standards in majority of the classrooms. Conclusion The study suggests the inclusion of task demand assessment in school vision screening protocol to provide relevant guidance to school authorities. These findings can serve as evidence to accommodate children with mild to moderate visual impairment in the regular classrooms.
