Abstract
With aging, there are normative changes to sleep physiology and circadian rhythmicity that may predispose older adults to sleep deficiency, whereas many health-related and psychosocial/behavioral factors may precipitate sleep deficiency. In this article, we describe age-related changes to sleep and describe how the health-related and psychosocial/behavioral factors typical of aging may converge in older adults to increase the risk for sleep deficiency. Next, we review the consequences of sleep deficiency in older adults, focusing specifically on important age-related outcomes, including mortality, cognition, depression, and physical function. Finally, we review treatments for sleep deficiency, highlighting safe and effective nonpharmacologic interventions.

Abstract
High-fidelity wireless electrophysiological monitoring is essential for ambulatory healthcare applications. Soft solid-like hydrogels have received significant attention as epidermal electrodes because of their tissue-like mechanical properties and high biocompatibility. However, it is challenging to develop a hydrogel electrode that provides robust contact and high adhesiveness with glabrous skin and hairy scalp for high-fidelity, continuous electrophysiological signal detection. Here, a paintable, fast gelation, highly adhesive, and conductive hydrogel is engineered for high-fidelity wireless electrophysiological monitoring. The hydrogel, consisting of gelatin, gallic acid, sodium citrate, lithium chloride, glycerol, and Tris-HCl buffer solution exhibits a reversible thermal phase transition capability, which endows it with the attributes of on-skin applicability and fast in situ gelation with 15 s, thereby addressing the aforementioned limitations. The introduction of gallic acid enhances the adhesive properties of the hydrogel, facilitating secure electrode attachment to the skin or hairy scalp. To accentuate the potential applications in at-home electrophysiological health monitoring, the hydrogel electrodes are demonstrated for high-fidelity electrocardiogram recording for one hour during various daily activities, as well as in simultaneous electroencephalogram and electrocardiogram recording during a 30 min nap.

Abstract
At higher levels of driving automation, drivers can nap during parts of the trip but must take over control in others. Awakening from a nap is marked by sleep inertia which is tackled by the NASA nap paradigm in aviation: Strategic on-flight naps are restricted to 40 min to avoid deep sleep and therefore sleep inertia. For future automated driving, there are currently no such strategies for addressing sleep inertia. Given the disparate requirements, it is uncertain whether the strategies derived from aviation can be readily applied to automated driving. Therefore, our study aimed to compare the effects of restricting the duration of nap opportunities following the NASA nap paradigm to the effects of sleep architecture on sleep inertia in takeover scenarios in automated driving. In our driving simulator study, 24 participants were invited to sleep during three automated drives. They were awakened after 20, 40, or 60 min and asked to manually complete an urban drive. We assessed how napping duration, last sleep stage before takeover, and varying proportions of light, stable, and deep sleep influenced self-reported sleepiness, takeover times, and the number of driving errors. Takeover times increased with nap duration, but sleepiness and driving errors did not. Instead, all measures were significantly influenced by sleep architecture. Sleepiness increased after awakening from light and stable sleep, and takeover times after awakening from light sleep. Takeover times also increased with higher proportions of stable sleep. The number of driving errors was significantly increased with the proportion of deep sleep and after awakenings from stable and deep sleep. These results suggest that sleep architecture, not nap duration, is crucial for predicting sleep inertia. Therefore, the NASA nap paradigm is not suitable for driving contexts. Future driver monitoring systems should assess the sleep architecture to predict and prevent sleep inertia.

Abstract
This study aimed to examine the improvement in performance and functional magnetic resonance imaging correlates of motor learning after a daytime nap versus a period of resting wakefulness among individuals with traumatic brain injury. A sample of 32 individuals with traumatic brain injury was randomly assigned to a Sleep (N = 17) or Wake (N = 15) group after a period of training on a motor sequential learning task. A 45-min nap opportunity was provided for the Sleep group, while the Wake group watched a documentary for 45 min. Performance at the end of training was compared with their performance after the nap or wake intervention. Before and after the intervention, the motor sequential learning task was completed in the magnetic resonance imaging scanner to examine the relationship between change in performance and neural activation. Participants in the Sleep group showed significant gains from the end of training to after the intervention, whereas the Wake group did not. The functional magnetic resonance imaging results showed that relative to the Wake group, the Sleep group showed significantly decreased activation post-intervention in the anterior cingulate/paracingulate, cerebellum, cuneus/precuneus, and inferior parietal lobule including angular and supramarginal gyri. Importantly, across both groups, increased task performance at post-intervention was associated with decreased activation in the anterior cingulate/paracingulate and cerebellum. This study demonstrated the enhancing effect of a nap on motor learning performance in a sample of individuals with traumatic brain injury, with patterns of neural activation suggesting that the sequence was more automatized in the Sleep group. Strategic placement of a nap after an intense period of motor learning in the medical rehabilitation setting may have important implications for maximizing recovery after traumatic brain injury.

Abstract
STUDY OBJECTIVES Previous studies examining bidirectional relationships between nocturnal sleep and napping have focused on sleep duration, leaving a gap in our understanding of how sleep timing contributes. Here, we assessed the duration and timing for night sleep and daytime naps, to evaluate how the previous night's sleep influences the next day's napping, and how napping influences same-night nocturnal sleep. METHODS We analyzed sleep diary and actigraphy data from 153 teens (males = 43.8%, mean age = 16.6 years). Participants who never napped were excluded. Nocturnal sleep-nap relationships were investigated using logistic and linear regression models separately for weekdays and weekends. RESULTS Participants napped an average of 2.3 times a week. 167 school day naps and 107 weekends were recorded. Naps were on average 82.12 ± 53.34 minutes and the average nap onset was 14:58 ± 3.78 hours. Their duration, start and end times did not significantly differ between weekdays and weekends. Nocturnal sleep duration did not predict next-day nap occurrence or duration. However, on school days, earlier wake times significantly increased the likelihood of napping that day, and advanced nap timing. On weekends, later bedtimes and wake times delayed nap timing. On school days, napping longer than one's average shortened nocturnal sleep whereas on weekends, waking from a nap later than one's average delayed bedtimes. CONCLUSIONS Early wake times increase the likelihood of napping and advance the time of a nap that day. Naps may be detrimental to the same night's sleep only if they are long and occur late, as these can delay bedtimes and shorten nocturnal sleep duration, especially on school days. Abstract
The influence of naps on tinnitus was systematically assessed by exploring the frequency, clinical and demographic characteristics of this phenomenon. 9,724 data from two different tinnitus databases (Tinnitus Hub: n = 6115; Tinnitus Research Initiative (TRI): n = 3627) were included. After separate analysis of the databases, these results were then compared with each other. In the Tinnitus Hub survey database, a total of 31.1% reported an influence on tinnitus by taking a nap (26.9% in the TRI database), with much more frequent worsening after a nap than improvement (23.0% a little or a lot worse; TRI: 17.7% worse; 8.1% a little or a lot better; TRI: 9.2% better). The influence of napping on tinnitus was associated in both databases with other clinical features, such as the dependence of tinnitus on night quality, stress and somatosensory maneuvers. The present study confirms the clinical observation that more tinnitus sufferers report worsening after a nap than tinnitus sufferers reporting an improvement. It was consistently shown that tinnitus sufferers reporting nap-induced modulation of tinnitus also report more frequently an influence of night sleep on their tinnitus. Further clinical and polysomnographic research is warranted to better understand the interaction between sleep and tinnitus.

Abstract
PURPOSE Previous research has established that food intake is a biological regulator of the human sleep-wake cycle. As such, the timing of eating relative to sleep may influence the quality of sleep, including daytime naps. Here, we examine whether the timing of lunch (1 h vs. 2 h interval between lunch and a napping opportunity) impacts the quality of an afternoon nap. METHODS Using a randomized within-subject design over two separate experimental sessions (7 days apart), participants (n = 40, mean age = 25.8 years) consumed lunch 1 h and 2 h prior to an afternoon nap opportunity. Polysomnography and subjective self-reports were used to assess sleep architecture, sleepiness levels, and nap quality. RESULTS Results revealed no significant differences in subjective ratings of sleep quality and sleepiness, or in sleep architecture (total sleep time, sleep efficiency, sleep onset latency, sleep stages) between the 1 h and 2-h lunch conditions. CONCLUSIONS All sleep measures were similar when napping followed eating by either 1 h or 2 h, suggesting that eating closer to nap onset may not negatively impact sleep architecture and quality. Future research should continue to identify conditions that improve nap quality, given the well-documented benefits of naps to reduce sleep pressure and improve human performance.

Abstract
INTRODUCTION AND FRAMEWORK Sleep capital contributes to individual and societal wellbeing, productivity, and economic outcomes and involves a novel aspect of brain capital. It encompasses the quality and quantity of sleep as integral components that influence cognitive abilities, mental and brain health, and physical health, affecting workplace productivity, learning, decision-making, and overall economic performance. Here, we bring a framework to understand the complex relationship between sleep quality, health, wellbeing, and economic productivity. Then we outline the multilevel impact of sleep on cognitive abilities, mental/brain health, and economic indicators, providing evidence for the substantial returns on investment in sleep health initiatives. Moreover, sleep capital is a key factor when considering brain health across the lifespan, especially for the aging population. DISCUSSION We propose specific elements and main variables to develop specific indexes of sleep capital to address its impacts on health, wellbeing and productivity. CONCLUSION Finally, we suggest policy recommendations, workplace interventions, and individual strategies to promote sleep health and brain capital. Investing in sleep capital is essential for fostering a healthier, happier, fairer and more productive society.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Napping is garnering increased attention as a strategy for adults to sustain alertness and alleviate stress in contemporary society. The nuances of napping habits are emerging as an independent factor influencing the extent of individual benefits. This study aimed to demonstrate the long-term benefits of napping and explore the impact of napping habits on individual alertness, as well as whether this effect was correlated with cortisol levels. METHODS The study involved 80 healthy adults categorized into two groups based on self-reported napping habits: habitual nappers (n = 49) and non-habitual nappers (n = 31). Karolinska Sleepiness Scale (KSS), psychomotor vigilance task (PVT), and saliva collection were performed every 30 min within 90 min in the absence of napping during the afternoon dip. The measurements were analyzed using repeated measures ANOVA and Pearson correlation analyses. RESULTS There was an interaction between groups and time in reaction speed and lapse number of PVT and cortisol (all p < 0.05). Post hoc analysis found that habitual nappers maintained higher objective alertness and experienced more significant increases in cortisol over time (all p < 0.05). The cortisol levels at sleepiness time were negatively associated with the slowest 10 % reaction speed of PVT in non-habitual nappers (r = -0.409, p = 0.022). CONCLUSION Under the premise of mitigating the impacts of acute nap deprivation on sleep homeostasis and rhythm, napping habits emerge as a potential factor influencing the ability of individuals to sustain heightened alertness.

Abstract
We aimed to explore the causal effect of daytime napping on the risk of osteoporosis and the mediation role of testosterone in explaining this relationship. Summary data for Mendelian randomization (MR) analysis were obtained from the IEU OpenGWAS database. Univariable MR(UVMR) analysis and multiple sensitivity analyses were applied to explore the casual relationship between daytime napping and bone mineral density (BMD)/osteoporosis. We also conducted multivariable Mendelian randomization (MVMR) analysis to evaluate the correlation between testosterone-associated single-nucleotide variations and BMD/osteoporosis. Then, mediation analysis was performed to explore whether the association between daytime napping and BMD/osteoporosis was mediated via testosterone. Genetically predicted daytime napping was significantly associated with femoral neck BMD (β [95% CI]: 0.2573 [0.0487, 0.4660]; P = 0.0156), lumbar spine BMD (β [95% CI]: 0.2526 [0.0211, 0.4840]; P = 0.0324), and osteoporosis (OR [95% CI]: 0.5063 [0.2578, 0.9942]; P = 0.0481). β and 95%CIs indicate the standard deviation (SD) unit of BMD increase per category increase in daytime napping. OR and 95%CIs represent the change in the odds ratio of osteoporosis per category increase in daytime napping. We observed a potentially causal effect of more frequent daytime napping on higher BMD and a lower risk of osteoporosis. Daytime napping was causally associated with a higher level of bioavailable testosterone (β [95% CI]: 0.1397 [0.0619, 0.2175]; P = 0.0004). β and 95%CIs represent the change in the SD of testosterone per category increase in daytime napping. Furthermore, the causal effects of daytime napping on BMD/osteoporosis were partly mediated by bioavailable testosterone. Daytime napping can efficiently increase BMD and reduce the risk of osteoporosis, and testosterone plays a key mediating role in this process.

Abstract
STUDY OBJECTIVES Daytime napping is frequently reported among the older population and has attracted increasing attention due to its association with multiple health conditions. Here, we tested whether napping in the aged is associated with altered circadian regulation of sleep, sleepiness, and vigilance performance. METHODS Sixty healthy older individuals (mean age: 69 years, 39 women) were recruited with respect to their napping habits (30 nappers, 30 non-nappers). All participants underwent an in-lab 40-hour multiple nap protocol (10 cycles of 80 minutes of sleep opportunity alternating with 160 minutes of wakefulness), preceded and followed by a baseline and recovery sleep period. Saliva samples for melatonin assessment, sleepiness, and vigilance performance were collected during wakefulness and electrophysiological data were recorded to derive sleep parameters during scheduled sleep opportunities. RESULTS The circadian amplitude of melatonin secretion was reduced in nappers, compared to non-nappers. Furthermore, nappers were characterized by higher sleep efficiencies and REM sleep proportion during day- compared to nighttime naps. The nap group also presented altered modulation in sleepiness and vigilance performance at specific circadian phases. DISCUSSION Our data indicate that napping is associated with an altered circadian sleep-wake propensity rhythm. They thereby contribute to the understanding of the biological correlates underlying napping and/or sleep-wake cycle fragmentation during healthy aging. Altered circadian sleep-wake promotion can lead to a less distinct allocation of sleep into nighttime and/or a reduced wakefulness drive during the day, thereby potentially triggering the need to sleep at adverse circadian phase.

Abstract
As the incidence of type 2 diabetes mellitus (T2DM) is increasing rapidly and its consequences are severe, effective intervention and prevention, including sleep-related interventions, are urgently needed. As a component of sleep architecture, naps, alone or in combination with nocturnal sleep, may influence the onset and progression of T2DM. Overall, napping is associated with an increased risk of T2DM in women, especially in postmenopausal White women. Our study showed that napping >30 minutes (min) increased the risk of T2DM by 8-21%. In addition, non-optimal nighttime sleep increases T2DM risk, and this effect combines with the effect of napping. For nondiabetic patients, napping >30 min could increase the risks of high HbA1c levels and impaired fasting glucose (IFG), which would increase the risk of developing T2DM later on. For diabetic patients, prolonged napping may further impair glycemic control and increase the risk of developing diabetic complications (e.g., diabetic nephropathy) in the distant future. The following three mechanisms are suggested as interpretations for the association between napping and T2DM. First, napping >30 min increases the levels of important inflammatory factors, including interleukin 6 and C-reactive protein, elevating the risks of inflammation, associated adiposity and T2DM. Second, the interaction between postmenopausal hormonal changes and napping further increases insulin resistance. Third, prolonged napping may also affect melatonin secretion by interfering with nighttime sleep, leading to circadian rhythm disruption and further increasing the risk of T2DM. This review summarizes the existing evidence on the effect of napping on T2DM and provides detailed information for future T2DM intervention and prevention strategies that address napping.

Abstract
STUDY OBJECTIVES The correlation of daytime napping and nighttime sleep duration on mortality was inconsistent. We aimed to explore their separate links to all-cause/premature mortality, and evaluate their combined impact on all-cause mortality risk. METHODS All of 20617 (mean age: 56.90 ± 10.19, 52.18 % females) participants from China Health and Retirement Longitudinal Study were followed for a median of 7 years (interquartile range: 4-7) to detect death status. Baseline self-reported napping and sleep duration was categorized: napping as none, <60 min, 60-90 min, and ≥90 min, sleep as <6 h/night, 6-8 h/night, and ≥8 h/night. Death event was tracked, and premature death was defined using 2015 China's average life expectancy (73.64 years for men, and 79.43 years for women). Cox regression models analyzed the data. RESULTS During follow-up, 1621 participants (7.86 %) died, including 985 (4.78 %) premature deaths. Compared to none nappers, napping ≥90 min associated with a higher risk of all-cause mortality (Hazard ratio, [HR] 1.23, 95 % confidence interval [CI] 1.06-1.42) and premature mortality (HR 1.23, 95 % CI 1.02-1.49), while napping <60 min correlated with a lower risk of premature mortality (HR 0.71, 95 % CI 0.54-0.95), after adjustment. Compared to sleep 6-8 h/night, nighttime sleep ≥8 h was associated with an increased risk of all-cause mortality (HR 1.20, 95 % CI 1.04-1.37) and premature mortality (HR 1.28, 95 % CI 1.08-1.52). Participants napping ≥90 min and sleeping ≥8 h had a multi-adjusted HR (95%CI) of 1.50 (95 % CI 1.17-1.92) for all-cause mortality, versus no napping and 6-8 h/night sleep. CONCLUSIONS Prolonged napping and extended nighttime sleep linked to increased mortality risk, particularly in combination. Optimizing sleep patterns may have potential implication in mortality prevention.

Abstract
Objective To investigate the association of sleep and circadian hygiene practices (sleep-promoting and sleep-disturbing behaviors) with sleep quality indicators. Methods Participants (n = 2050; 18-65 y) were part of virtual population-based research. Logistic regression models were fitted to assess differences in the OR (95% CI) of poor quality with sleep-promoting/disturbing practices (time-of-day of exercise, pre-bedtime routine, naps, electronic devices with illuminated screens, caffeine and alcohol consumption, and smoking). Linear regression analyses evaluated differences in sleep duration, latency, and awakenings associated with the same variables. Restricted cubic splines were used to study the shape of the association of screen time before bed with sleep duration, latency, and awakenings. Analyses were adjusted for age, sex, region, marital status, educational level, evening diet quality, and BMI. Results Evening use of electronic devices with illuminated screens showed a negative effect on all sleep parameters. Reporting dinner as the largest meal and evening caffeine consumption was associated with shorter sleep duration and longer sleep latency. Smokers had higher odds of longer latency. A protective effect of morning exercises was demonstrated on sleep quality, latency, and awakenings. Alcohol consumers presented lower odds of poor quality and lower frequency of awakenings. Pre-bedtime practices showed no or negative effect on sleep outcomes. Conclusions Recommendations to promote sleep quality and prevent sleep-related problems, with corresponding circadian health benefits, should include engaging in regular exercise, preferably in the morning, and avoiding naps, heavy meals close to bedtime, caffeine, smoking, and evening screen exposure.

Abstract
STUDY OBJECTIVES Consumer sleep trackers issue daily guidance on 'readiness' without clear empirical basis. We investigated how self-rated mood, motivation, and sleepiness (MMS) levels are affected by daily fluctuations in sleep duration, timing, and efficiency and overall sleep regularity. We also determined how temporally specific these associations are. METHODS 119 healthy university students (64 female, mean age = 22.54 ± 1.74 years) wore a wearable sleep tracker and undertook twice-daily smartphone-delivered ecological momentary assessment of mood, motivation, and sleepiness at post-wake and pre-bedtime timings for 2-6 weeks. Naps and their duration were reported daily. Nocturnal sleep on 2471 nights were examined using multilevel models to uncover within-subject and between-subject associations between sleep duration, timing, efficiency, and nap duration on following day MMS ratings. Time-lagged analyses examined the temporal specificity of these associations. Linear regression models investigated associations between MMS ratings and sleep variability, controlling for sleep duration. RESULTS Nocturnal sleep durations were short (6.03 ± 0.71 h), and bedtimes were late (1:42AM ± 1:05). Within-subjects, nocturnal sleep longer than a person's average was associated with better mood, higher motivation, and lower sleepiness after waking. Effects of such longer sleep duration lingered for mood and sleepiness till the pre-bedtime window (all Ps < .005) but did not extend to the next day. Between-subjects, higher intraindividual sleep variability, but not sleep duration, was associated with poorer mood and lower motivation after waking. Longer average sleep duration was associated with less sleepiness after waking and lower motivation pre-bedtime (all Ps < .05). Longer naps reduced post-nap sleepiness and improved mood. Controlling for nocturnal sleep duration, longer naps also associated with lower post-waking sleepiness on the following day. CONCLUSIONS Positive connections between nocturnal sleep and nap duration with MMS are temporally circumscribed, lending credence to the construction of sleep-based, daily 'readiness' scores. Higher sleep duration variability lowers an individual's post waking mood and motivation. CLINICAL TRIAL ID ClinicalTrials.gov NCT04880629.

Abstract
OBJECTIVES Prior studies have documented the existence of sleep disparities between social groups and have proposed possible reasons for these gaps. To extend these empirical findings, the current study elucidates whether and how intersections between sociocultural identities shape the lived experience and management of sleep and sheds light on the social factors that explain within-group heterogeneity. METHODS This article draws on semi-structured interviews with 66 employed Israelis, aged 40-60, conducted between February 2020 and February 2022. Participants were selected using a non-probability purposeful sampling design that sought to include individuals with a wide range of sociodemographic backgrounds in terms of gender, ethnonationality, socioeconomic status, religion, and religiosity as well as the quality of sleep. RESULTS The analysis shows that intersections of gender, socioeconomic status, ethnonationality, religion, and religiosity prompt qualitatively different understandings, experiences, and management of sleep, in a way that affects both sleep opportunity and sleep ability. CONCLUSIONS This study contributes to the scholarly understanding of the social determinants of sleep by highlighting the significance of the intersections of sociocultural identities for sleep health and implementing a nuanced socioecological approach to understanding within-group variability. The results call for the design of tailored interventions that consider the sociocultural context.

Abstract
Background Although excessive daytime napping has been shown to be involved in diabetes occurrence, its impact on insulin secretion and sensitivity has not been elucidated. It is speculated that excessive napping disrupts the sleep-wake rhythm and increases sympathetic nerve activity during the day, resulting in decreased insulin sensitivity, which may be a mechanism leading to development of diabetes. We previously conducted a cross-sectional study that showed an association of autonomic dysfunction with decreased insulin sensitivity, though involvement of autonomic function in the association between napping and insulin sensitivity remained unclear. Furthermore, the effects of napping used to supplement to short nighttime sleep on insulin secretion and sensitivity are also unknown. In the present cross-sectional study, we examined the relationships of daytime nap duration and autonomic function with insulin secretion and sensitivity in 436 subjects enrolled in the Hyogo Sleep Cardio-Autonomic Atherosclerosis (HSCAA) Cohort Study who underwent a 75-g oral glucose tolerance test (75-g OGTT), after excluding those already diagnosed with diabetes. Methods Daytime nap duration was objectively measured using actigraphy, with the subjects divided into the short (≤1 hour) and long (>1 hour) nap groups. Insulin secretion and sensitivity were determined using 75-g OGTT findings. Standard deviation of normal to normal R-R interval (SDNN), a measure of autonomic function, was also determined based on heart rate variability. Subgroup analysis was performed for the associations of napping with insulin secretion and sensitivity, with the results stratified by nighttime sleep duration of less or greater than six hours. Results Subjects in the long nap group exhibited lower insulin sensitivity parameters (QUICKI: β=-0.135, p<0.01; Matsuda index: β=-0.119, p<0.05) independent of other clinical factors. In contrast, no associations with insulin secretion were found in either group. Furthermore, the association of long nap duration with insulin sensitivity was not confounded by SDNN. Specific subgroup analyses revealed more prominent associations of long nap habit with lower insulin sensitivity in subjects with a short nighttime sleep time (β=-0.137, p<0.05). Conclusion Long daytime nap duration may be a potential risk factor for decreased insulin sensitivity.

Abstract
Diurnal fluctuations in working memory (WM) performance, characterized by task-specific peaks and troughs, are likely attributed to the differential regulation of WM subcomponents by interactions between circadian and homeostatic processes. The current study aimed to investigate the independent effects of circadian and homeostatic processes on the storage and executive subcomponents of WM. We assessed the change in frontal-midline theta (FMT) power supporting WM executive component and posterior alpha/beta power supporting WM storage during N-back tasks in the morning, midafternoon with and without a nap from 31 healthy adults. The results suggested that when the accumulated sleep homeostasis was alleviated in the midafternoon by a daytime nap, higher ACC, less number of omissions, and a stronger increase in FMT power from the no nap to nap conditions. Compared to the morning, a stronger decrease in posterior alpha power, and posterior beta power (only in the 3-back task), was observed in the no-nap condition because of circadian arousal regulation. These findings suggest that the circadian process primarily influences the storage aspect of WM supported by posterior alpha and beta activity, while sleep homeostasis has a greater impact on the execution aspect supported by FMT activity.

Abstract
STUDY OBJECTIVES Increasing evidence suggests that napping is associated with cognitive impairment and dementia, but the conclusions are inconsistent. Moreover, the extent of the risk is uncertain. We therefore conducted a systematic review and meta-analysis to quantify the connection between napping and cognitive impairment. METHODS We performed a systematic search of PubMed, EMBASE, Web of Science, and Cochrane Library for studies that were published up to June 2023, and assessed associations between napping and cognitive impairment. Odds ratios (ORs) and 95% confidence intervals (CIs) were calculated as the effect sizes for all studies. Heterogeneity and potential publication biases were assessed. RESULTS A total of 4535 papers were retrieved, with 20 reports assessing the relationships between napping and cognitive impairment. Pooled analysis indicated that napping was associated with dementia (OR = 1.14; 95% CI: 1.07-1.21). Importantly, we found that those napping longer than 30, 45, and 60 min/day were 35%, 41%, and 40%, respectively, more likely to have an increased risk of cognitive impairment (30 min: OR = 1.35; 95% CI: 1.24-1.48; 45 min: OR = 1.41; 95% CI: 1.27-1.58; 60 min: OR = 1.40; 95% CI: 1.26-1.56). North America and Europe showed that associations existed between napping and cognitive impairment (North America: OR = 1.15; 95% CI: 1.04-1.27; Europe: OR = 1.13; 95% CI: 1.08-1.18). CONCLUSIONS This meta-analysis indicated associations between long napping durations and cognitive impairment or dementia, suggesting that longer napping might be a potential risk factor of adverse cognitive outcomes.

Abstract
Objectives The aims were to explore multidimensional sleep health and the different dimensions of sleep health in the adult Norwegian population in relation to sex, age, education, circadian preference, and chronic insomnia. Methods A representative sample of 1028 Norwegians, aged 18 + years completed a cross-sectional web-based survey. Sleep health was measured with the multidimensional RU_SATED scale, which assesses the dimensions of regularity, satisfaction, alertness, timing, efficiency, and duration. Insomnia was assessed with the Bergen Insomnia Scale. Data were analyzed with chi-square tests, t-tests, one-way ANOVAs, and regression analyses, as appropriate. Response rate was 33.5%. Results Sleep health was better in males, with increasing age, and with higher educational level, and was poorer in participants with evening preference and chronic insomnia, compared to their respective counterparts. When investigating the different sleep health dimensions, males scored better than females on satisfaction (adjusted odds ratio [aOR] = 0.69, 95% CI = 0.51 to 0.93), timing (aOR = 0.66, 95% CI = 0.49 to 0.88), and efficiency (aOR = 0.68, 95% CI = 0.52 to 0.89). Older age was associated with better scores on regularity and satisfaction, whereas young age was associated with better scores on alertness and duration. High educational level was associated with better scores on alertness, timing, and duration. Evening types scored worse than morning types on regularity (aOR = 0.27, 95% CI = 0.18 to 0.41), satisfaction (aOR = 0.37, 95% CI = 0.26 to 0.53), and timing (aOR = 0.36, 95% CI = 0.26 to 0.51). Participants with chronic insomnia scored worse than participants without insomnia on all six sleep health dimensions. Conclusions Sleep health differed significantly in relation to sex, age, education, circadian preference, and chronic insomnia. However, specific group differences were not equally evident in all sleep health dimensions.

Abstract
BACKGROUND A growing body of research has clarified that sleep is influenced not only by biological factors but also by social factors. While studies have shown that social norms can affect sleep behavior and sleeping arrangements, including when, where, how, and with whom people sleep, researchers still know relatively little about how social norms affect sleep health, especially among adults. The current study explores the association between social norms and sleep health in the Israeli context. METHODS Data were drawn from semi-structured, in-depth interviews with 66 Israelis-including women and men, Arabs and Jews, and religious and non-religious persons-conducted between February 2020 and February 2022. This article focuses on responses to a set of questions about the comments people make or hear from others about their sleep. Exploring how people comment on the sleep of others highlights prevalent social norms around sleep. RESULTS Findings indicate that how sleep is "done" is policed by family and community members who react to norm violations by commenting on what is perceived as "inappropriate" sleep behavior. Comments were made in jest or earnest in response to breaches of social norms regarding sleep timing, duration, continuity, and alertness/sleepiness, indicating that social norms and expectations shape each of these sleep health dimensions. CONCLUSIONS This article expands the scholarly understanding of the social determinants of sleep health. The study concludes that since individuals may opt to conform to current social norms, which are enforced by members of the family and community, interventions aimed at promoting sleep health should target not only individuals but also the family and community.

Abstract
OBJECTIVES The concept of multi-dimensional sleep health, originally based on self-report, was recently extended to actigraphy in older adults, yielding five components, but without a hypothesized rhythmicity factor. The current study extends prior work using a sample of older adults with a longer period of actigraphy follow-up, which may facilitate observation of the rhythmicity factor. METHODS Wrist actigraphy measures of participants (N = 289, Mage = 77.2 years, 67% females; 47% White, 40% Black, 13% Hispanic/Others) over 2 weeks were used in exploratory factor analysis to determine factor structures, followed by confirmatory factor analysis on a different subsample. The utility of this approach was demonstrated by associations with global cognitive performance (Montreal Cognitive Assessment). RESULTS Exploratory factor analysis identified six factors: Regularity: standard deviations of four sleep measures: midpoint, sleep onset time, night total sleep time (TST), and 24-hour TST; Alertness/Sleepiness (daytime): amplitude, napping (mins and #/day); Timing: sleep onset, midpoint, wake-time (of nighttime sleep); up-mesor, acrophase, down-mesor; Efficiency: sleep maintenance efficiency, wake after sleep onset; Duration: night rest interval(s), night TST, 24-hour rest interval(s), 24-hour TST; Rhythmicity (pattern across days): mesor, alpha, and minimum. Greater sleep efficiency was associated with better Montreal Cognitive Assessment performance (β [95% confidence interval] = 0.63 [0.19, 1.08]). CONCLUSIONS Actigraphic records over 2 weeks revealed that Rhythmicity may be an independent factor in sleep health. Facets of sleep health can facilitate dimension reduction, be considered predictors of health outcomes, and be potential targets for sleep interventions.

Abstract
Vigilance is highly sensitive to the time-of-day effect and goes through the daytime trough during the period of the post-noon dip. A midday nap could maintain individuals' vigilance at an optimal level. Thus, homeostatic sleep pressure is one of the main reasons for the post-noon dip in daytime vigilance. The current study focussed on the role of homeostatic sleep pressure in the diurnal variation of vigilance performance with normal circadian rhythms and the corresponding neural basis. With 34 healthy adults, we recorded the resting-state electroencephalogram activities and the following vigilance performance measured by psychomotor vigilance test in the morning, the no-nap mid afternoon, and the nap mid afternoon. The circadian process was controlled by measuring vigilance and resting-state electroencephalogram activities at the same time point in the nap and no-nap conditions. Homeostatic sleep pressure accumulated from morning to mid afternoon induced the declined vigilance performance and a global increase in resting-state delta, theta, alpha, and beta1 bands power, and a local increase in beta2 band power in the central region. Furthermore, the more the spontaneous beta2 power increased, the less vigilance declined from morning to mid afternoon. The current findings suggest that homeostatic sleep pressure increased cortical excitability but decreased cortical communication efficiency from morning to mid afternoon. In addition, the activity of the high beta waves probably reflected the compensatory effort to counteract the negative impact of the low arousal state on the following vigilance task by performing more action preparation in the no-nap afternoon.

Abstract
OBJECTIVES Daytime napping has been associated with cognitive function and brain health in observational studies. However, it remains elusive whether these associations are causal. Using Mendelian randomization, we studied the relationship between habitual daytime napping and cognition and brain structure. METHODS Data were from UK Biobank (maximum n = 378,932 and mean age = 57 years). Our exposure (daytime napping) was instrumented using 92 previously identified genome-wide, independent genetic variants (single-nucleotide polymorphisms, SNPs). Our outcomes were total brain volume, hippocampal volume, reaction time, and visual memory. Inverse-variance weighted was implemented, with sensitivity analyses (Mendelian randomization-Egger and Weighted Median Estimator) for horizontal pleiotropy. We tested different daytime napping instruments to ensure the robustness of our results. RESULTS Using Mendelian randomization, we found an association between habitual daytime napping and larger total brain volume (unstandardized ß = 15.80 cm3 and 95% CI = 0.25; 31.34) but not hippocampal volume (ß = -0.03 cm3 and 95% CI = -0.13;0.06), reaction time (expß = 1.01 and 95% CI = 1.00;1.03), or visual memory (expß = 0.99 and 95% CI = 0.94;1.05). Additional analyses with 47 SNPs (adjusted for excessive daytime sleepiness), 86 SNPs (excluding sleep apnea), and 17 SNPs (no sample overlap with UK Biobank) were largely consistent with our main findings. No evidence of horizontal pleiotropy was found. CONCLUSIONS Our findings suggest a modest causal association between habitual daytime napping and larger total brain volume. Future studies could focus on the associations between napping and other cognitive or brain outcomes and replication of these findings using other datasets and methods.

Abstract
While short daytime naps have been found to provide alertness and performance benefits without inducing sleep inertia, the effects of a similar napping strategy during nights shifts are largely unknown. This study examined the effects of a 20-min nap (scheduled at 2:00 a.m.) during night shifts among 16 participants (mean [SD] age 22.0 [1.08] years) who worked in a simulated night shift from midnight (12:00 a.m.) to morning (ending at 6:00 or 8:00 a.m.). The participants underwent both a 'nap condition' and a 'no-nap condition' by engaging in repeated 10-min tasks (four-choice reaction time tasks and vigilance tasks) and 10-min rest. The results showed that compared to the no-nap condition, sleepiness was significantly lower in the nap condition between 3:20 and 5:20 a.m. (p < 0.05). The nap condition also yielded significantly better performance in the vigilance tasks between 2:40 and 5:40 a.m., except at 4:40 am (p < 0.05). However, no significant difference was found in sleepiness and performance in the vigilance task at 5:40 a.m. or immediately after the nap between the two conditions. The results showed that a 20-min nap at 2:00 a.m. did not induce sleep inertia upon waking. Furthermore, it mitigated sleepiness and sustained work performance for 3 h after the nap. However, the effect of napping was no longer observed near the end of the night shift. Considering risks of falling asleep while driving home from work that may cause a traffic accident, further research should examine ways to mitigate sleepiness after a night shift.

Abstract
OBJECTIVE To investigate the association of baseline nocturnal sleep duration and sleep changes with functional disability in middle-aged and elderly Chinese. METHODS Data for this study were collected from the China Health and Retirement Longitudinal Study (CHARLS) from baseline (2011) to the Wave 3 follow-up (2018). 8361 participants free of IADL disability in 2011 and aged ≥ 45 years old were recruited and prospectively followed till 2018 to analyze the association between baseline nocturnal sleep duration and IADL disability. Of these 8361 participants, a total of 6948 participants had no IADL disability at the first three follow-up visits and completed the 2018 follow-up to analyze the association between nocturnal sleep changes and IADL disability. Nocturnal sleep duration (hours) was self-reported at baseline. The coefficient of variation (CV) of nocturnal sleep duration at baseline and three follow-up visits was used to calculate sleep changes and classified into mild, moderate, and severe degrees by the quantiles. Cox proportional hazards regression model was used to analyze the association of baseline nocturnal sleep duration with IADL disability, and the binary logistic regression model was used to analyze the association of nocturnal sleep changes with IADL disability. RESULTS Among the 8361 participants of 50237.5 person-years follow-up with a median follow-up of 7 years, 2158 (25.81%) participants developed IADL disabilities. Higher risks of IADL disability were observed among participants with sleep duration <7 h [HR(95%): 1.23(1.09-1.38)], 8∼<9 h [HR(95%): 1.05(1.00-1.32)] and ≥9 h [HR(95%): 1.21(1.01-1.45)] compared to those with 7∼<8 h. Among the 6948 participants, a total of 745 (10.72%) participants finally developed IADL disabilities. Compared with mild nocturnal sleep changes, moderate [OR(95%): 1.48(1.19-1.84)] and severe [OR(95%): 2.43(1.98-3.00)] sleep changes increased the probability of IADL disability. The restricted cubic spline model showed that a higher degree of nocturnal sleep changes was associated with a greater probability of IADL disability. CONCLUSION Both insufficient and excessive nocturnal sleep duration were associated with higher risk of IADL disability in middle-aged and elderly adults, independent of the participants' gender, age, and napping habits. Higher nocturnal sleep changes were associated with a higher probability of disability in IADL. These findings highlight the importance of appropriate and stable nocturnal sleep, and the need to pay attention to population differences in the impact of nocturnal sleep duration on health.

Abstract
We explored the association of sociodemographic and anthropometric factors with self-reported physical activity (PA) and sleep quality in Arab and non-Arab individuals of both sexes during the COVID-19 pandemic. In this cross-sectional study, 638 participants (those recovered from COVID-19 = 149, and non-infected = 489) of both sexes aged 18-55 years were recruited. Their sociodemographic and anthropometric information, PA (self-reported using the International Physical Activity Questionnaire Short-form [IPAQ-SF)]) and sleep quality (self-reported using the Pittsburgh Sleep Quality Index [PSQI]) were documented. The association between participants' characteristics, PA levels, and sleep quality were determined using the chi-squared test. Variables significantly associated with IPAQ and PSQI in bivariate analyses were included in a multivariate binary logistic regression model. Men were more active than women (odds ratio [OR] = 1.66, p = 0.010), and non-Arab participants were more active than Arab ones (OR = 1.49, p = 0.037). Participants ≥40 years, men, non-Arab participants, and those who were working were more likely to have a good sleep quality than those ≤40 years (OR 1.70, p = 0.048), women (OR 1.10, p = 0.725), Arab individuals (OR 1.95, p = 0.002), and unemployed people (OR 2.76, p = 0.007). Male and non-Arab participants seemed to have a better self-reported PA and sleep quality compared to female and Arab participants, during the pandemic.

Abstract
Relationships between activity engagement and health related quality of life (HRQOL) can differ based on the level of analyses. For instance, greater exercise on average may be linked with lower fatigue across individuals (between-person level), whereas the momentary experience of exercise may be associated with increased fatigue within an individual (within-person level). Disentangling the between- and within-person associations between everyday activities and HRQOL outcomes may provide insights for personalized lifestyle-oriented health promotion efforts for individuals with chronic conditions. The purpose of this paper was to examine the between- and within-person relationships between activity engagement and HRQOL relevant measures in a sample of 92 workers with type 1 diabetes (T1D), from whom we collected ecological momentary assessment (EMA) data 5-6 times daily over 14 days. At each EMA prompt, information was collected on the activity participants just engaged in, and HRQOL relevant metrics (e.g. mental health, blood glucose, fatigue, functioning). Momentary reports of "caring for others", and more frequently "caring for others", were both associated with decreased HRQOL. Reporting napping 10% or more of the time during a person's waking hours, but not the momentary experience of napping, was associated with decreased HRQOL. Momentary reports of sleeping were associated with low activity satisfaction relative to other activities, but higher activity importance. Study results provided a quantitative representation of the lived experience of T1D covering multiple types of activity engagement, which potentially has health promotion implications for workers with T1D. Abstract
OBJECTIVE To estimate the association between daytime napping and cognitive and physical sport performance and fatigue after normal sleep and partial sleep deprivation (less sleep duration than necessary). DESIGN Systematic review and meta-analysis. DATA SOURCES The PubMed, Scopus, Web of Science, Cochrane Central, SportDiscus and PsycINFO databases. ELIGIBILITY CRITERIA FOR SELECTING STUDIES Randomised controlled trials on the effect of daytime napping on sport performance and fatigue available from inception to 2 December 2022. Standardised mean differences (SMD) and their 95% compatibility intervals (CI) were estimated with the DerSimonian-Laird method through random effect models. RESULTS In the 22 included trials, 291 male participants (164 trained athletes and 127 physically active adults) aged between 18 and 35 years were studied. When performed after a normal night of sleep, napping from 12:30 hours to 16:50 hours (with 14:00 hours being the most frequent time) improved cognitive (SMD=0.69, 95% CI: 0.37 to 1.00; I2=71.5%) and physical performance (SMD=0.99, 95% CI: 0.67 to 1.31; I2=89.1%) and reduced the perception of fatigue (SMD=-0.76, 95% CI: -1.24 to -0.28; I2=89.5%). The positive effects of napping were also confirmed after partial sleep deprivation. Overall, the benefits were higher with a nap duration between 30 and <60 min and when the time from nap awakening to test was greater than 1 hour. CONCLUSIONS After a night of normal sleep or partial sleep deprivation, a daytime nap between 30 and <60 min has a moderate-to-high effect on the improvement of cognitive performance and physical performance and on the reduction of perceived fatigue. Abstract
Employees who work long hours frequently complain of muscle fatigue caused by prolonged sitting. As a result, products that assist them when resting in a chair in a reclining position, in order to relieve fatigue and improve comfort are required. To ensure that the new product works as intended, a usability test based on prototyping must be developed. The research process was divided into three stages: firstly, the development of the perception assessment questionnaire; secondly, a validated factor analysis (CFA) was conducted on the perception assessment data of 26 subjects and the measurement model was fitted to verify the reliability and validity of the questionnaire; finally, the sEMG technique was used to verify the comfort level of 21 subjects. Based on usability experiments and an exploration of human factor relationships, this study develops a prototype testing model, which focuses on the comfort perception of body parts, as a means of promoting innovation in the design and manufacturing industry.

Abstract
Despite sleep's fundamental role in maintaining and improving physical and mental health, many people get less than the recommended amount of sleep or suffer from sleeping disorders. This review highlights sleep's instrumental biological functions, various sleep problems, and sleep hygiene and lifestyle interventions that can help improve sleep quality. Quality sleep allows for improved cardiovascular health, mental health, cognition, memory consolidation, immunity, reproductive health, and hormone regulation. Sleep disorders, such as insomnia, sleep apnea, and circadian-rhythm-disorders, or disrupted sleep from lifestyle choices, environmental conditions, or other medical issues can lead to significant morbidity and can contribute to or exacerbate medical and psychiatric conditions. The best treatment for long-term sleep improvement is proper sleep hygiene through behavior and sleep habit modification. Recommendations to improve sleep include achieving 7 to 9 h of sleep, maintaining a consistent sleep/wake schedule, a regular bedtime routine, engaging in regular exercise, and adopting a contemplative practice. In addition, avoiding many substances late in the day can help improve sleep. Caffeine, alcohol, heavy meals, and light exposure later in the day are associated with fragmented poor-quality sleep. These sleep hygiene practices can promote better quality and duration of sleep, with corresponding health benefits.

Abstract
Traditional risk factors for obesity and the metabolic syndrome, such as excess energy intake and lack of physical activity, cannot fully explain the high prevalence of these conditions. Insufficient sleep and circadian misalignment predispose individuals to poor metabolic health and promote weight gain and have received increased research attention in the past 10 years. Insufficient sleep is defined as sleeping less than recommended for health benefits, whereas circadian misalignment is defined as wakefulness and food intake occurring when the internal circadian system is promoting sleep. This Review discusses the impact of insufficient sleep and circadian misalignment in humans on appetite hormones (focusing on ghrelin, leptin and peptide-YY), energy expenditure, food intake and choice, and risk of obesity. Some potential strategies to reduce the adverse effects of sleep disruption on metabolic health are provided and future research priorities are highlighted. Millions of individuals worldwide do not obtain sufficient sleep for healthy metabolic functions. Furthermore, modern working patterns, lifestyles and technologies are often not conducive to adequate sleep at times when the internal physiological clock is promoting it (for example, late-night screen time, shift work and nocturnal social activities). Efforts are needed to highlight the importance of optimal sleep and circadian health in the maintenance of metabolic health and body weight regulation.

Abstract
OBJECTIVES It has been reported that job demands affect sleep, but how different levels of job demands affect sleep remains unclear. We examined whether curvilinear relationships exist between job demands and multiple sleep health outcomes. DESIGN Cross-sectional analyses with linear and quadratic effects, using self-administered survey data. SETTING A national sample of US adults. PARTICIPANTS Workers from Midlife in the United States Study (MIDUS2; n = 2927). MEASUREMENTS The Job Content Questionnaire assessed overall and 5 specific aspects of job demands (intensity, role conflict, work overload, time pressure, and interruptions). Habitual sleep health patterns across 5 dimensions (regularity, satisfaction/quality, daytime alertness, efficiency, and duration) were assessed. Age, sex, race/ethnicity, marital/partnered status, education, job tenure, work hours, body mass index, smoking status, and study sample were covariates. RESULTS There were significant linear and quadratic relationships between job demands and sleep outcomes. Specifically, the linear effects indicated that participants with higher job demands had worse sleep health, such as shorter duration, greater irregularity, greater inefficiency, and more sleep dissatisfaction. The quadratic effects, however, indicated that sleep regularity and efficiency outcomes were the best when participants' job demands were moderate rather than too low or too high. These effects were found for overall job demands as well as for specific aspects of job demands. Stratified analyses further revealed that these curvilinear associations were mainly driven by participants with low job control. CONCLUSIONS Moderate levels of job demands, especially if combined with adequate job control, are related to optimal sleep health.

Abstract
OBJECTIVES Shift workers routinely obtain inadequate sleep, which has major health and well-being consequences. Sleep hygiene describes a range of behaviors, lifestyle and environmental factors that can support optimal sleep. To date, limited research has examined sleep hygiene in shift workers. This study aimed to 1) assess the knowledge and understanding of sleep hygiene amongst shift working paramedics, as well as the perceived impact on sleep, and 2) investigate paramedics engagement with sleep hygiene practices. STUDY DESIGN Participants completed an online, cross-sectional survey. PARTICIPANTS Queensland Ambulance Service paramedics (n = 184) who work shift work. MEASURES The online survey included questions from the Standard Shiftwork Index and Sleep Hygiene Index. RESULTS Most participants reported little or no understanding or knowledge of "sleep hygiene" as a concept. Participants reported that sleep scheduling and bedroom environment (temperature, light, and noise) were the most impactful on sleep. Few participants reported nicotine and alcohol consumption, or daytime napping, whereas caffeine consumption and mentally-stimulating bedtime activities were more common. Participants who were young, single, and worked all shift types (day, afternoon, and night) as part of their regular rosters, demonstrated less knowledge regarding sleep hygiene, and were more likely to be exhibiting poor sleep hygiene engagement. CONCLUSIONS Paramedics demonstrated a limited level of understanding of sleep hygiene as a concept, and varied knowledge about the impacts of individual sleep hygiene factors. Further, paramedics demonstrated varied engagement with individual sleep hygiene practices. Future research should focus on the development of sleep hygiene interventions to optimize sleep in paramedics.

Abstract
STUDY OBJECTIVES To determine trends in prevalence of short sleep duration and trouble sleeping among US adults from 2005 to 2018, and to assess how sleep trends vary by sex and race/ethnicity. METHODS Seven cycles of the National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey data between 2005-2006 and 2017-2018 were analyzed. Trouble sleeping and sleep duration were self reported. Short sleep duration was defined as sleep duration ≤6 hr. Age-standardized prevalence of reporting trouble sleeping to a health care provider and short sleep duration were estimated among the overall US adult population, and by sex and race/ethnicity. RESULTS From 2005 to 2014, the age-adjusted prevalence of short sleep duration remained similar in the overall population (p for trend >0.05). Non-Hispanic Black people had the highest prevalence of short sleep duration among all race/ethnicity groups in all seven cycles. The prevalence of short sleep duration appears lower in 2015-2018 than in 2005-2014 due to different measurement methods applied. However, from 2005 to 2018, there were increasing trends in age-adjusted prevalence of reporting trouble sleeping to a health care provider in the overall population, among both men and women, and all race/ethnicity groups (p for trend <0.05). Among all the race/ethnicity groups, non-Hispanic White people had the highest prevalence of reporting trouble sleeping to a healthcare provider. CONCLUSION Findings depict the persistence of sleep-related issues in the United States and possible risk factors, as well as racial disparities.

Abstract
Specialized individual circuits in the brain are recruited for specific functions. Interestingly, multiple neural circuitries continuously compete with each other to acquire the specialized function. However, the dominant among them compete and become the central neural network for that particular function. For example, the hippocampal principal neural circuitries are the dominant networks among many which are involved in learning processes. But, in the event of damage to the principal circuitry, many times, less dominant networks compensate for the primary network. This review highlights the psychopathologies of functional loss and the aspects of functional recuperation in the absence of the hippocampus.

Abstract
Background Hearing loss has occurred as a critical concern for aging and health. However, it remains unknown whether nocturnal sleep and midday napping duration are associated with hearing loss in middle-aged and older adults. Methods The study comprised 9,573 adults from China Health and Retirement Longitudinal Study, who have completed the survey for sleep characteristics and subjective functional hearing. We collected self-reported nocturnal sleep duration (<5, 5 to <6, 6 to <7, 7 to <9, ≥9 h/night) and midday napping duration (≤5, 5 to ≤30, and >30 min). The sleep information was classified into different sleep patterns. The primary outcome was self-reported hearing loss events. Multivariate Cox regression models and restricted cubic splines were used to investigate the longitudinal association of sleep characteristics with hearing loss. We applied Cox generalized additive models and bivariate exposure-response surface diagrams to visualize the effects of different sleep patterns on hearing loss. Results We confirmed 1,073 cases of hearing loss (55.1% female) during the follow-up. After adjusting for demographic characteristics, lifestyle factors and health condition, nocturnal sleep with < 5 h was positively associated with hearing loss [hazard ratio (HR): 1.45, 95% confidence interval [CI]: 1.20, 1.75]. Individuals with napping for 5 to ≤30 min had a 20% (HR: 0.80, 95%CI: 0.63, 1.00) lower risk of hearing loss compared with those with napping ≤ 5 min. Restrictive cubic splines showed the reverse J-shaped association between nocturnal sleep and hearing loss. Moreover, we found significant joint effects of sleeping < 7 h/night and midday napping ≤ 5 min (HR: 1.27, 95% CI: 1.06, 1.52) on hearing loss. Bivariate exposure-response surface diagrams also reflected the finding that short sleep without napping existed the highest risk of hearing loss. Compared with persistently sleeping moderately (7-9 h/night), those who persistently slept < 7 h/night or shifted from < 7 h/night to moderate or > 9 h/night had higher risks of hearing loss. Conclusion Inadequate nocturnal sleep was associated with an elevated risk of poor subjective hearing in middle-aged and older adults, while moderate napping decreased the risk of hearing loss. Keeping sleep stable within recommendation duration may be a useful strategy for preventing poor hearing loss.

INTRODUCTION Daytime napping is frequently seen in older adults. The longitudinal relationship between daytime napping and cognitive aging is unknown. METHODS Using data from 1401 participants of the Rush Memory and Aging Project, we examined the longitudinal change of daytime napping inferred objectively by actigraphy, and the association with incident Alzheimer's dementia during up to 14-year follow-up. RESULTS Older adults tended to nap longer and more frequently with aging, while the progression of Alzheimer's dementia accelerates this change by more than doubling the annual increases in nap duration/frequency. Longer and more frequent daytime naps were associated with higher risk of Alzheimer's dementia. Interestingly, more excessive (longer or more frequent) daytime napping was correlated with worse cognition a year later, and conversely, worse cognition was correlated with more excessive naps a year later. DISCUSSION Excessive daytime napping and Alzheimer's dementia may possess a bidirectional relationship or share common pathophysiological mechanisms.

Abstract
Background The relationship between daytime napping and depression remains debatable. Thus, a meta-analysis in this study was conducted to evaluate the relationship between daytime napping and depression. Methods The PubMed, Embase, Web of Science, and China National Knowledge Infrastructure databases were searched up to February 2022, and the reference lists of the included studies were also retrieved. A random-effects model was used to estimate the combined effect size. Results Nine studies with 649,111 participants were included in the final analysis. The pooled odds ratio (OR) was 1.15 (95% confidence interval: 1.01-1.31) with a significant heterogeneity (I 2 = 91.3%, P for heterogeneity <0.001), and the results demonstrated an increased risk of depressive symptoms among daytime nappers. Visual inspection of the funnel plot and Egger's and Begg's tests identified no obvious evidence of publication bias. Conclusion This meta-analysis indicates that daytime naps are a predictor of depression. The effects of daytime napping on depression may vary depending on the characteristics of people, the pattern of naps, and the individual's sleep experience. The findings may have significant implications for future research on depression.

Abstract
BACKGROUND The bidirectional causal association between daytime napping frequency and schizophrenia is unclear. METHODS A bidirectional two-sample Mendelian randomization (MR) analysis was conducted with summary statistics of top genetic variants associated with daytime napping frequency and schizophrenia from genome-wide association studies (GWAS). The single nucleotide polymorphisms (SNPs) data of daytime napping frequency GWAS came from the UK Biobank (n = 452,633) and 23andMe study cohort (n = 541,333), while the schizophrenia GWAS came from the Psychiatric Genomics Consortium (PGC, 36,989 cases and 113,075 controls). The inverse variance weighted (IVW) analysis was the primary method, with the weighted median, MR-Robust Adjusted Profile Score (RAPS), Radial MR and MR-Pleiotropy Residual Sum Outlier (PRESSO) as sensitivity analysis. RESULTS The MR analysis showed a bidirectional causal relationship between more frequent daytime napping and the occurrence of schizophrenia, with the odds ratio (OR) for one-unit increase in napping category (never, sometimes, usually) on schizophrenia was 3.38 (95% confidence interval [CI]: 2.02-5.65, P = 3.58 × 10-6), and the beta for the occurrence of schizophrenia on daytime napping frequency was 0.0112 (95%CI: 0.0060-0.0163, P = 2.04 × 10-5). The sensitivity analysis obtained the same conclusions. CONCLUSION Our findings support the bidirectional causal association between more daytime napping frequency and schizophrenia, implying that daytime napping frequency is a potential intervention for the progression and treatment of schizophrenia.

Abstract
Overnight sleep can reduce perceived stress, and improve associated cognitive disruptions and negative affect after an acute stressor. Whether a brief nap can also bestow these benefits in a non-sleep-restricted population is currently unknown. In this study that used a between-subjects design, stress was triggered by administering a modified Trier Social Stress Test to two groups of participants (nap [n = 29], wake [n = 41]). All participants were instructed they would give a speech during the study but the topic would be withheld until later, and then completed a math task. After a 40-min break in which participants watched a neutral video or took a nap monitored with electroencephalography, stress was reinforced by presenting the speech topics and giving participants a 10-min preparation period. Next, instead of giving a speech, the study ended and participants were debriefed. Negative affect, perceived stress and working memory were measured at multiple time points before and after the break. Both groups showed lower perceived stress and improved working memory after the break than before, but a nap did not confer additional benefits for perceived stress or working memory beyond taking a break. However, the nap group exhibited lower negative affect after the break than the wake group, and only the nap group showed a reduction in negative affect compared with initial negative affect levels. These results indicate a nap can improve negative emotions accompanying a stressor to a greater extent than taking a break, and suggest that brief naps may be a useful way to improve mood while experiencing an acute stressor.

Abstract
Many children experience sleep disruption in the form of difficulties falling asleep, staying asleep, or getting back to sleep. Children with acquired brain injuries (ABI) sometimes experience an exacerbation of these symptoms. Thus, researchers and practitioners alike need to identify creative assessment and treatment approaches to meet this population’s needs. The purpose of the current case study was to highlight one method for (a) determining a nap schedule and (b) evaluating the effect of fatigue on behavioral function for one child diagnosed with an ABI. We conducted a scatterplot analysis to identify periods in which problem behaviors occurred more or less often. These data informed when the child took naps. Afterward, the child participated in a functional analysis of problem behavior before a nap and again after a nap. Results showed both negative and positive reinforcement maintained problem behaviors before naps, while only positive reinforcement maintained problem behaviors after naps. Functional communication training (FCT) programs implemented to address escape, tangible, and attention functions before naps reduced problem behavior and increased communication. These data suggested that (a) motivating operations for problem behavior can differ depending on fatigue and (b) FCT is an effective intervention for problem behavior affected by fatigue. The current study provides an example of an assessment and treatment approach when biologic factors, like sleep, may influence problem behavior.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Hypertension is one of the main public health issues around worldwide, and midday napping is a popular habit. The association between the two remains to be explored. OBJECTIVE The goal of the research was to explore the association of midday napping with hypertension. METHODS This study separately selected 11,439, 12,689, and 9464 Chinese respondents aged over 45 years from the China Health and Retirement Longitudinal Study 2011, 2015, and 2018 data sets. Binary logistic regression was used to explore the association of midday napping with hypertension, and the 3-step method was used to test the mediation effect of BMI. RESULTS Among all respondents, the prevalence rates of hypertension were 24.6% (2818/11439) in 2011, 21.1% (2683/12689) in 2015, and 22.1% (2092/9464) in 2018. Midday napping was positively correlated with hypertension. In 2011 and 2015, napping 60 to 90 minutes had the greatest odds ratios [OR] (OR2011 1.705, OR2015 1.494). In 2018, the biggest OR came from the group napping 30 to 60 minutes (OR 1.223), and ORs of different napping durations decreased from 2011 to 2018. In addition, BMI had a partial mediation effect in 2015 and 2018. CONCLUSIONS Midday napping is a potential risk factor for hypertension with BMI acting as a mediator. To prevent hypertension, avoiding prolonged duration of midday napping and taking action to maintain a normal BMI level are recommended.

Abstract
Sleep is critical for health, cognition, and restorative processes, and yet, many experience chronic sleep restriction. Sleep interventions have been designed to enhance overnight sleep quality and physiology. Components of these interventions, like relaxation-based progressive muscle relaxation (PMR), have been studied in isolation and have shown direct effects on sleep architecture, including increasing time in restorative, slow-wave sleep (SWS). These relaxation methods have been understudied in naps, which are effective fatigue countermeasures that reduce deleterious effects of chronic sleep restriction. We hypothesised that PMR should boost SWS in a nap, as compared to an active control. We used a between-subject design in which healthy young adults underwent PMR training or listened to Mozart music (control) prior to a 90-min nap opportunity. We assessed changes in the amount and lateralisation of SWS, as evidence suggests left hemispheric lateralisation may be a proxy for recuperative sleep needs, and changes to state-dependent anxiety and fatigue before and after the nap to assess intervention success. We found PMR participants spent ~10 min more in SWS, equivalent to 125% more time, than the control group, and concomitantly, significantly less time in rapid eye movement sleep. PMR participants also had greater right lateralised slow-wave activity and delta activity compared to the control suggesting a more well-rested brain profile during sleep. Further, pre-sleep anxiety levels predicted nap architecture in the intervention group, suggesting benefits may be impacted by anxiety. The feasibility and accessibility of PMR prior to a nap make this an interesting research avenue to pursue with strong translational application.

Abstract
This study aimed to examine the sleep habits in pairs of Japanese high school students and their mothers in the summer and autumn. Nineteen pairs of high school students and their mothers participated in this study. Wrist actigraphy, subjective sleep evaluations, and bedroom environmental measurements (temperature, humidity, and light) were performed for a duration of one week. The results of a split-plot analysis of variance revealed no significant difference in the actigraphically evaluated time spent in bed (TIB) between the seasons and between the mothers and students. The TIB was approximately 6 h on weekdays, and significantly lengthened to approximately 7 h on weekends (p < 0.05). The average sleep efficiency values recorded were higher than 90%. The mothers showed significantly advanced sleep phases compared to those of the students (p < 0.05). In addition, the waking time on Monday morning was significantly correlated between the mothers and students in the summer and autumn (p < 0.05). A perceived sleep loss “almost every day” or “several times per week” was reported by approximately half of the mothers and students in each season. The students occasionally fell into nocturnal sleep with the room light turned on. These results suggest that sleep hygiene education considering life habit characteristics is required to ensure sufficient sleep time.

Abstract
BACKGROUND No clear evidence is available for the influence of napping on cognitive function in older adults. This systematic review and meta-analysis aimed to elucidate the cross-sectional and longitudinal relationships between napping and cognitive function (global cognition and memory) and to explore whether some individual characteristics and sleep characteristics can modify this relationship. METHODS We systematically searched Medline (via PubMed), Web of Science, and Scopus. DerSimonian and Lair and Hartung-Knapp-Sidik-Jonkman random effects methods were used to compute pooled estimates of odds ratios (ORs) and their respective 95% confidence intervals (95% CIs) for the association of global cognition and memory with napping. The mean age, the night sleep time (hours), and the percentage of women, no nappers, and people in the less night-time sleep duration category were used for meta-regressions. RESULTS Twenty-five studies were included in this systematic review and meta-analysis, 18 cross-sectional and seven longitudinal studies, including 95,719 participants older than 60 years. The pooled ORs from the cross-sectional analyses were 1.03 (95% CI: 1.01 to 1.06) for global cognition and 1.06 (95%: 0.90 to 1.26) for memory. The pooled ORs from the longitudinal analyses were 1.00 (95% 0.85 to 1.18) for global cognition and 1.08 (95% 0.98 to 1.19) for memory. These associations were not modified by individual or sleep characteristics. CONCLUSION Our data confirm the absence of association between napping and global cognition and memory regardless of the characteristics of the population. This information might be considered when providing lifestyle recommendations to adults with and without cognitive complaints.

Abstract
Background and purpose The relationship between sleep duration and stroke are inconclusive in China, especially in those individuals with metabolic syndrome. We aimed to investigate the association between sleep duration and incident stroke in participants with metabolic syndrome or its specific components in China. Materials and methods Data were taken from the 2011 and 2015 waves of China Health and Retirement Longitudinal Study (CHARLS). Habitual sleep duration (≤6, 6∼8 [reference], >8 h), daytime napping (0, 1∼60 [reference], and >60 min) were determined by self-reported questionnaires. Metabolic syndrome was defined by blood assessment and biomarkers combined with self-reported doctors' diagnosis. Incident stroke was determined by reported stroke from 2011 to 2015 wave. Cross-sectional and longitudinal associations between sleep and (incident) stroke at baseline and 4-year follow-up period were tested among the population with metabolic syndrome and its components. Results A U-shaped relationship was observed between sleep duration and stroke in cross-sectional analysis. Sleep ≤ 6 h/night had a greater risk of incident stroke (hazard ratio [HR] 1.65; 95% confidence interval [CI] 1.04-2.61) compared with sleep 6∼8 h/night. And the HR of stroke was 1.62 (95%CI, 1.03-2.53) for sleep < 7 h/day compared to 7∼9 h/day. These associations were more evident in the female and individuals aged 45-65 years. Furthermore, the effect of short sleep duration on incident stroke was different in each component of metabolic syndrome, which was more pronounced in participants with elevated blood pressure. And a significant joint effect of sleeping ≤ 6 h/night and no napping on risk of stroke was observed (HR 1.82, 95%CI 1.06-3.12). Conclusion Short sleep duration was an independent risk factor for incident stroke, especially among females, individuals aged 45-65 years, or those with some components of metabolic syndrome, such as hypertension. Napping could buffer the risk of short sleep duration on incident stroke.

Abstract
Background Sleep status, including sleep quality and nap duration, may be associated with frailty and cognitive impairment in older adults. Older adults living in nursing homes may be more prone to physical and cognitive frailties. This study aimed to investigate the association between sleep quality and nap duration, and cognitive frailty among older adults living in nursing homes. Methods This study included 1,206 older adults aged ≥ 60 years from nursing homes in Hunan province, China. A simple frailty questionnaire (FRAIL scale) was used and Mini-Mental State Examination was conducted to assess physical frailty and cognitive impairment, respectively, to confirm cognitive frailty. The Pittsburgh Sleep Quality Index was used to assess the sleep quality. Nap duration was classified as follows: no, short (≤30 min), and long (>30 min) napping. Multinomial logistic regression was conducted to estimate the odds ratio (OR) and 95% confidence interval (CI). Results The prevalence of cognitive frailty among the older adults in nursing homes was 17.5%. Approximately 60.9% of the older adults had a poor sleep quality. Among the 1,206 participants, 43.9% did not take naps, 29.1% had short naps, and 26.9% had long naps. After adjusting for all covariates, poor sleep quality (OR 2.53; 95% CI 1.78-3.59; P < 0.001) and long nap duration (OR 1.77; 95% CI 1.19-2.64; P = 0.003) were associated with higher odds of cognitive frailty, but short nap duration (OR 0.60; 95% CI 0.40-0.89; P = 0.012) was associated with low prevalence of cognitive frailty. Conclusion Poor sleep quality and long nap duration are significantly associated with high risk of cognitive frailty among the older adults in nursing homes. Short nap duration was associated with low prevalence of cognitive frailty. However, these associations require further validation in older adults. Clinical trial registration https://osf.io/57hv8.
