Abstract
OBJECTIVES This study aimed to assess the association between posterior occlusal support (POS) and the risk of tooth loss in older adults aged ≥75 years. METHODS This longitudinal study analyzed 94,422 participants who participated in multiple dental check-ups provided as part of the public healthcare services in Osaka, Japan, from 2018 to 2022. The participants were categorized into nine groups (A1-3, B1-4, and C1 and C2) according to their POS status using the Eichner index at baseline. The dental charts were compared between the initial and final assessments to assess tooth loss. Logistic regression analysis was used to examine the association between POS status and tooth loss, adjusted for several covariates, including age, sex, body mass index, periodontal status, oral hygiene, history of diabetes, history of hypertension, attendance at the annual dental check-up, and observational period. Furthermore, stratified logistic regression analyses were conducted using anterior or posterior tooth loss. RESULTS After controlling for confounders, POS status was associated with tooth loss. The odds ratios (ORs) with A1 as the reference were 1.74 in A2, 2.55 in A3, 3.40 in B1, 4.74 in B2, 5.79 in B3, 6.00 in B4, 4.44 in C1, and 3.00 in C2, respectively. The ORs for anterior tooth loss were higher than those for posterior tooth loss, with the highest OR observed in B4 (21.4). CONCLUSIONS This large population-based cohort study showed that a decreased POS was a risk indicator for tooth loss; furthermore, the risk increased even further in the anterior teeth region.

Abstract
BACKGROUND The present study assessed the impact of oral health on the daily lives of children and mothers living in a rural area in Northwestern Egypt. METHODS A cross-sectional household survey including children between 6 and 12 years old and their mothers was conducted in rural Egypt, 2019-2020. Data were collected using clinical examination and interview-based questionnaires of children and mothers. Three binary logistic regression models were used to assess the relationship between the dependent variables (oral health impact (yes, no) on avoiding smiling, chewing problems, and missing school (children) and avoiding social events (mothers)), and the explanatory variables: oral health (clinically-assessed caries experience and self-reported oral health) controlling for sociodemographic profile (child age and sex, mother's education), daily toothbrushing and village of residence. RESULTS A total of 211 households with 355 children and 211 mothers were included (91.5% response rate). About 54% of the children were girls, mean (SD) age = 8.7 (2.05) years and 82.3% did not brush their teeth daily. Mother's mean (SD) age was 31.70 (5.45) years. Because of dental problems, 31.3% of children reported chewing difficulties, 31% avoided smiling compared to 76.3% and 43.6% of mothers. Also, 30.4% of children missed school and 76.8% of mothers reported reduced participation in social activities. In children, the number of decayed anterior teeth was associated with significantly higher odds of avoiding smiling (AOR = 1.22, 95%CI: 1.03, 1.44). In mothers, a greater number of posterior missing teeth was associated with significantly higher odds of chewing difficulties (AOR = 1.21, 95%CI: 1.01, 1.45), and a greater number of all missing teeth was associated with significantly higher odds of reduced participation in social events (AOR = 1.30, 95%CI: 1.30, 1.57). Good/ very good reported oral health in children and mothers was associated with lower odds of avoiding smiling and chewing problems (p < 0.05). CONCLUSION Decayed anterior teeth in children have a negative impact on smiling whereas missing teeth in mothers affect the ability to chew food and socialize. The psychological, functional, and social impacts of caries in this rural setting needs to be mitigated by improving oral health literacy and access to care.

Abstract
OBJECTIVE To validate the level of agreement between self-report and clinical examination for oral conditions and evaluate the effect of sociodemographic conditions on the validity of self-report among women aged 60 and older. METHODS A cross-sectional study was conducted in a social community center for seniors in Southern Brazil. Sociodemographic data (age, level of education, and income) were measured. Participants were interviewed and clinically examined for the number of teeth (DMF-T index) and the use of dental prostheses. The self-reported number of teeth in each arch and the use of dental prostheses were gathered through interviews. The level of agreement was estimated using the observed agreement, Kappa statistics, sensitivity/specificity (edentulism/prostheses) and Lin's concordance correlation coefficient, and related tests (number of teeth). The validity of the oral conditions was estimated according to sociodemographic information. RESULTS Ninety-nine women participated in the study. High levels of agreement were observed for edentulism (97.8%; 95%CI 92.8;99.7; Kappa 0.947) and the use of dental prostheses (97.0%; 95%CI 91.3;99.4; Kappa 0.922). In both conditions, despite achieving similar concordance correlation coefficients (ranging from weak to moderate), the mean number of upper teeth was lower in clinical examination (7.1 ± 5.2) compared with self-reported (8.6 ± 3.6), while the opposite was observed for lower teeth (clinical examination: 9.1 ± 3.4; self-reported: 6.6 ± 5.3). Larger differences were found among women of low income and educational levels. CONCLUSIONS Our findings suggest that the participants' socio-economic position might influence their self-reported number of teeth.

Abstract
OBJECTIVES To examine the association between life-course body silhouette changes and oral conditions in adulthood. METHODS At study recruitment (2008-2012), 5430 adults underwent a full-mouth clinical examination and recalled their body silhouettes at ages 8, 15, 25, 35 and 45. Life-course trajectories of body silhouettes were computed using group-based trajectory modelling. Gingival inflammation, dental plaque, masticatory units, numbers of healthy, missing, decayed and filled teeth at study recruitment were clustered. The associations between body silhouette trajectories and clusters of oral conditions were assessed by multinomial logistic regression. RESULTS The final analysis included 4472 participants. Five body silhouette trajectories were established: lean-stable (30.0%), lean-increased (19.3%), moderate stable (18.1%), lean-marked increased (25.8%) and heavy stable (6.7%). Three clusters of oral conditions were identified: optimal oral health and preserved masticatory capacity (70.0%, cluster 1), moderate oral health and moderately impaired masticatory capacity (25.4%, cluster 2) and poor oral health and severely impaired masticatory capacity (4.7%, cluster 3). Participants with a lean-increased trajectory were 58% more likely than those with a lean-stable trajectory to be in cluster 3 (aOR 1.58 [95% CI 1.07; 2.35]) relative to cluster 1, independently of covariates measured at study recruitment and including age, sex, smoking, socioeconomic status, BMI, hypertension, type 2 diabetes, cholesterol and triglycerides. CONCLUSIONS A life-course lean-increased body silhouette trajectory is associated with higher likelihood of poor oral health and severely impaired masticatory capacity in adulthood.

Abstract
OBJECTIVES This prospective clinical study aimed to determine the influence of oral prosthodontic rehabilitation with partial removable dentures and simplified dietary advice on glycaemic control, nutritional status and oral health-related quality of life (OHRQoL) of older adults with type 2 diabetes. BACKGROUND Individuals with tooth loss who did not wear complete or partial dentures are more likely to be at nutritional risk, suggesting that using dental prostheses would benefit the re-establishment of an adequate nutritional status and potentially improve quality of life. Nutritional therapy is essential for diabetes prevention, treatment and management, favouring glycaemic control. The literature provides little evidence on the contribution of partial removable dentures to improving diabetes control, nutritional profile and satisfaction in older adults, especially those with type 2 diabetes. MATERIALS AND METHODS Older individuals diagnosed with type 2 diabetes mellitus, aged 60 years or older and needing oral rehabilitation with partial removable dentures were eligible for this prospective study. The primary outcome measure was glycaemic control, measured by glycated haemoglobin (HbA1c) levels. The Oral Health Impact Profile (OHIP-14) questionnaire and the Mini Nutritional Assessment short-form (MNA-SF) represented secondary outcome measures. These measures were assessed at baseline and 12 months of follow-up after prosthesis delivery, combined with simple dietary advice in pamphlet form. The data were analysed using the Wilcoxon matched-pairs test. RESULTS Forty-four patients who met the inclusion criteria and required treatment with removable partial dentures were selected for this study, which was carried out for a year. During this period, seven participants declined to participate because they moved to another city. Hence, a final sample of 37 participants (16 men and 21 women, average age of 65.8 years, ranging from 60 to 83 years) were included in the study. No laboratory parameter (HbA1c levels) changed significantly during the investigation. The number of older adults at risk of malnutrition was significantly lower at 12 months than at baseline. Furthermore, nutritional status significantly improved 12 months after prosthodontic treatment combined with dietary advice, and the effect sizes were large. OHRQoL significantly improved after prosthodontic therapy combined with dietary advice. CONCLUSIONS Prosthodontic treatment with partial dentures associated with simple dietary advice did not influence glycaemic control but improved the nutritional status and OHRQoL of older adults with type 2 diabetes.

Abstract
OBJECTIVES To examine the longitudinal relationship between edentulism, nutritional intake, and the progress of multimorbidity among older Americans. METHODS We used data from the Health and Retirement Study (2006-2018), a longitudinal survey of older Americans that has collected data biennially since 1992. Edentulism was assessed in 2006 while nutritional intake was assessed in 2013. Multimorbidity was indicated by five self-reported chronic conditions: diabetes, heart conditions, lung diseases, cancer, and stroke. Individuals with two or more conditions at baseline were excluded from the analysis. Nutritional intake was calculated by summing 10 nutrients (protein, vitamins C, D, B12 and E, calcium, zinc, polyunsaturated fatty acids, folate, and ß-carotene). Structural equation modelling (SEM) was used to examine the nutritional pathway between edentulism (2006) and the increase in multimorbidity from 2006 to 2018. RESULTS The number of individuals included in the analysis was 3463. The incidence of multimorbidity between 2006 and 2018 was 24.07%, while the percentage of edentate participants in 2006 was 16.42%. The mean total nutrition in 2013 was 4.50 (4.43, 4.55). The SEM analysis showed that edentulism was negatively associated with nutritional intake {estimate -0.15 (95%CI: -0.30, -0.01)}. A negative association was found between total nutrition and multimorbidity {estimate -0.008 (95%CI: -0.01, -0.002)}. Age, wealth, and smoking were included in the analysis and had statistically significant associations with multimorbidity. CONCLUSION The analysis demonstrated a longitudinal association between edentulism, nutritional intake, and the progress of multimorbidity.

Abstract
BACKGROUND/OBJECTIVE Tooth loss is common among older adults and can affect dietary intake and weight status. This study investigated associations between dentition status and body mass index (BMI) in older adults. MATERIALS AND METHODS This was a cross-sectional study of data from a convenience sample of older adults (65-89 years) treated at an urban U.S. dental school clinic. Clinical and demographic data were obtained from electronic health records. Dentition status was determined based on data from odontograms. Multinomial logistic regression was used to estimate the odds ratio (OR) and 95% confidence interval (CI) of having a non-normal weight status for each measure of dentition status, after adjusting for covariates. RESULTS Patients (n = 1765) were 54.1% female, 51.5% White, 41.6% African American and 22.5% Hispanic/Latino. The median (interquartile range [IQR]) age was 71 (67.0-75.0) years; the mean (±SD) BMI was 28.5 (±5.7) kg/m2 ; 72.5% were overweight or obese. The median (IQR) number of remaining teeth was 20.0 (13.0-24.0); the median numbers of anterior and posterior occluding pairs of teeth were 5.0 (2.0-6.0) and 2.0 (0.0-5.0), respectively; and 44.9% had a functional dentition (≥21 teeth). Having a higher number of remaining teeth and more posterior occluding pairs were associated with lower odds of obesity (OR = 0.980, 95% CI = 0.964, 0.997, p = .022 and OR = 0.931, 95% CI = 0.885, 0.980, p = .006, respectively). Lack of a functional dentition was associated with higher odds of obesity (OR = 1.400, 95% CI = 1.078, 1.818, p = .012), after controlling for covariates. CONCLUSION Older adults with tooth loss - especially loss of posterior occlusion and lack of a functional dentition - were more likely to be obese than of normal weight.

Abstract
PURPOSE Dentition defect including edentulism is a problem that deserves attention, which requires precise preoperative planning. The trajectories of the implants can be determined using a pre-made radiographic template, which is adopted for prosthesis-driven oral implantology. However, existing solutions for the registration between the radiographic template and the patient's CBCT still require manual operation and cause inadequate accuracy. In this study, a pre-operative planning system for prosthesis-driven oral implantology is developed with a novel automated registration method. METHODS Based on threshold segmentation and morphological feature filtering, the potential feature points on two sets of CBCTs are, respectively, recognized. The distance features of the point sets are used to predict the optimal solution for point pair matching, after which the automated registration is implemented. The prosthesis-driven planning can be completed according to the results of registration and multi-planar reconstruction. Then, the surgical templates can be designed and fabricated using 3D printing technology based on the planning results and finally used for intra-operative guidance during implant placement. RESULTS Verification of the proposed method was conducted on three clinical cases. The mean Fiducial Registration Error of 0.13 ± 0.01mm was achieved with great efficiency. The average time was 0.15 s for the automatic registration algorithm, and 15.64 s for the whole procedure. CONCLUSIONS The proposed method proved to be accurate and robust. The results indicate that it can achieve higher efficiency while maintaining a low error level, which will have great potential clinical applications in the future.

Abstract
OBJECTIVE The aim of this study was to evaluate the association between the lack of a functional dentition and edentulism with mortality in a cohort of older adults in a Southern Brazilian city. MATERIALS AND METHODS This is a longitudinal study carried out with community-dwelling older adults (≥60 years old) from Pelotas, Brazil, using data from the baseline (2014) and the first follow-up (2017). Main exposures were functional dentition (20+ teeth present) and edentulism (absence of all teeth), derived from self-reported number of teeth. All-causes mortality was evaluated according to the city's Epidemiological Surveillance Department. Potential confounders were age, sex, socioeconomic position, smoking, diabetes, hypertension, and body mass index (BMI). To test the association between functional dentition and edentulism with mortality, Poisson regression models with robust variance were used, to estimate Relative Risks and 95% confidence intervals. RESULTS A total of 1289 older adults had information on all variables of interest and comprise the analytical sample (from 1451 at baseline). When analysing the presence of functional dentition, only 222 individuals (17.2%) had 20 or more teeth in their mouth, while 490 older adults were edentulous (38.0%). Crude analysis showed an association between tooth loss indicators and mortality. Models adjusted for sociodemographic variables and health conditions and behaviours revelled no association between the exposures and mortality. CONCLUSIONS With the findings of this study, we did not identify an association between edentulism and functional dentition with mortality, after considering important shared risk factors.

Abstract
OBJECTIVES This cross-sectional study investigated the factors associated with weight gain ≥ 10 kg after 20 years of age in the general Japanese population, with a focus on the number of teeth. MATERIALS AND METHODS We included individuals aged ≥ 40 years from Yamagata prefecture, Japan from 2017-2021. A postal survey was conducted using a self-administered questionnaire; 5,940 participants were included in the final analysis. The questionnaire included items on lifestyle factors, medical history, physical and mental conditions, oral health, and dietary intake. A multivariate logistic regression analysis was used to identify independent associations between weight gain ≥ 10 kg after 20 years of age and various parameters; adjusted odds ratios (ORs) and 95% confidence intervals (CIs) were estimated. RESULTS Less than 20 teeth, male sex, drinking habit frequency, eating very fast or fast, and a higher frequency of eating-away-from-home were significant factors associated with weight gain ≥ 10 kg after 20 years of age; individuals with < 20 versus > 20 teeth exhibited a 1.35-fold higher OR (95% CI 1.15-1.59; p < 0.01). CONCLUSIONS Our results suggest that having < 20 teeth may affect weight gain ≥ 10 kg after 20 years of age. However, owing to the cross-sectional study design, causality could not be determined. Therefore, maintaining healthy lifestyle behaviors to avoid tooth loss may also affect weight gain ≥ 10 kg after 20 years of age. CLINICAL RELEVANCE Having < 20 teeth has the potential to affect long-term weight gain after 20 years of age.

Abstract
The association between prevalent fractures and tooth loss in postmenopausal women remains unclear. Herein, we investigated the association between prevalent vertebral and nonvertebral fractures, the number of teeth present at baseline, and the number of teeth lost during follow-up in postmenopausal Japanese women. This cross-sectional study enrolled 843 participants (mean age 68.3 years). The number of teeth at follow-up was evaluated in 655 women in this longitudinal study. The participants were divided into four groups according to their prevalent fracture status: no fractures, vertebral fractures alone, nonvertebral fractures alone, and both fracture types. After adjusting for covariates, Poisson regression analyses were performed to investigate differences in the number of teeth at baseline and that lost during the follow-up period among the four groups. Participants with prevalent vertebral fractures alone had significantly fewer teeth at baseline than those in participants without fractures or nonvertebral fractures alone (p < 0.001 for both). Furthermore, they lost more teeth during the follow-up period than did those with no fractures (p = 0.021) and tended to lose more teeth than did those with nonvertebral fractures alone or both prevalent fracture types. We observed no significant difference in the number of teeth lost between the participants with nonvertebral fractures alone and those with no fractures. Postmenopausal women with prevalent vertebral fractures may be at a higher risk of tooth loss. © 2023 The Authors. Abstract
OBJECTIVES The primary aim of this study was to assess any long-term association between tooth loss at age 50 and subsequent impaired oral health-related quality of life, OHRQoL, at age 65, 70 and 75, adjusted for time invariant socio-demographic-and time variant behavioural and age-related factors in terms of disadvantages with functional, social, health and psychological concerns. As a second aim, this study examined whether behavioural- and age-related factors played a role in explaining any long-term association between early tooth loss and subsequent OHRQoL. METHODS In 1992, 6346 residents, aged 50, consented to participate in a prospective cohort study and 3060 completed postal questionnaire follow-ups every fifth year (six in total) until 2017. Information on tooth loss was assessed at baseline at age 50. Behavioural- and age-related covariates were assessed repeatedly at ages 65, 70 and 75. OHRQoL was the repeated outcome measure assessed by the Oral Impact on Daily Performance, OIDP at age 65, 70 and 75. Generalized Estimating Equations, GEE, with binomial logit function was used to test the association between tooth loss and prevalence of oral impacts (OIDP) adjusting for counfounders and potential mediators. The role of behavioural and age-related factors in explaining the association between early tooth loss and OHRQoL was tested using the change in estimate approach. RESULTS Tooth loss and time variant behavioural- and age-related covariates associated independently with higher odds of impaired OHRQoL across time. The long-term impact of tooth loss seemed to be partly explained by time variant covariates related to functional and psychological concerns. Participants who had excessive tooth loss at age 50 were 2.5 times more likely to experience oral impacts before adjustment of covariates. After adjustment of functional- and psychological-covariates, participants were, respectively, 1.6 times and 1.4 times more likely to experience oral impacts. CONCLUSION This study revealed that early tooth loss at age 50 was independently associated with subsequent impaired OHRQoL at ages 65, 70 and 75. The aspects of behavioural- and age-related factors in terms of disadvantages in functional and psychological concerns seemed to play a role in explaining the long-term impact of tooth loss on impaired OHRQoL. A mid-life approach to the prevention of tooth loss for the protection of subsequent adverse health outcomes should guide health promotion interventions and also be recognized by oral health care providers both for patient interaction and clinical decision making.

Abstract
The objective was to study the long-term effects on oral health of bariatric surgery compared with medical treatment of obesity. Swedish females with morbid obesity (n = 66; 18-35 years at baseline) were followed prospectively from before obesity treatment until 2 years after treatment. The main response variable was dental caries registered according to the ICDAS-II system. Possible confounding factors, such as sociodemographic characteristics, general health, oral health habits, and oral hygiene, were controlled for. The statistical methods included χ2 tests, Student's t tests, one-way ANOVA, Wilcoxon's nonparametric tests, and linear regression models. In the surgically treated patients (n = 40), a significant increase over time in enamel caries (mean increase 4.13 tooth surfaces ICDAS1-2), dentine caries (mean increase 2.18 tooth surfaces ICDAS3-6), and total caries (mean increase 6.30 tooth surfaces ICDAS1-6) was registered (all p < 0.001), which was not seen in the medically treated patients (n = 26). However, the difference between the treatment groups (surgical or medical) was only statistically significant for enamel caries (crude β 4.89, p = 0.003) and total caries (crude β 6.53, p < 0.001). The relationships were stable and independent of differences in confounders as socioeconomy, general health, and oral health behaviors. In conclusion, 2 years after obesity treatment, a significant increase in dental caries was registered in the surgically treated but not in the medically treated women. The dental service should intensify its preventive efforts in individuals undergoing obesity treatment.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Previous studies have shown a longitudinal association between tooth loss and cognitive function. Body mass index (BMI) is an essential applicable indicator of health status screening. However, the underlying mechanism among these factors remains unclear. This study aimed to determine the mediating role of BMI in the tooth loss-cognition relationship by gender among Chinese middle-aged and older adults. METHODS This is a prospective and cohort study. We used three waves of follow-up data (2011, 2013, and 2015) from the China Health and Retirement Longitudinal Survey, including 10,013 participants aged 45 years or above. Cognitive function was evaluated by Telephone Interview of Cognitive Status, words recall, and figure drawing. The cross-lagged panel model was applied to test the hypothesized model. RESULTS Tooth loss is associated with higher BMI and lower level of cognitive function. We found significant total effects (B = -0.017, P = 0.008), direct effect (B = -0.015, P = 0.022) and indirect effects (B = -0.002, P = 0.010) of tooth loss on cognition mediated through BMI only among middle-aged and older men. For middle-aged and older women, the total effect (B = -0.010, P = 0.125) and direct effect (B = -0.007, P = 0.249) were no more significant. CONCLUSIONS The longitudinal association between tooth loss and cognition was primarily indirect through BMI among middle-aged Chinese males but not women. Public health authorities should remind middle-aged and older males with tooth loss and high BMI to participate in timely medical checkups for improving cognition.

Abstract
OBJECTIVE To investigate the association between tooth loss severity and core and non-core food consumption in the older Brazilian population. METHODS We analysed data from 20 756 people aged 60 years or older who participated in the 2019 Brazilian National Health Survey. The average consumption days a week of core (8-item) and non-core (4-item) foods were the outcomes, measured using a Food Frequency Questionnaire. Tooth loss severity was the main exposure, using a four-category ordinal variable: mild (1-12 teeth missing), moderate (13-22), severe (23-31) and edentulous (all 32). Sociodemographic, tobacco smoking, use of dental prosthesis, difficulty in chewing and systemic conditions were among the covariates. Linear regression models estimated the association between tooth loss and food consumption. RESULTS Almost two-thirds of participants had moderate or worse levels of tooth loss. Older adults with more severe tooth loss reported an overall lower consumption of core and higher non-core foods than those with mild tooth loss. Worse tooth loss severity was associated with lower consumption of vegetables and/or legumes and fruits, and higher consumption of beans, artificial fruit juices and confectionery. CONCLUSIONS Older Brazilian adults with more severe tooth loss are consuming lower core and higher non-core foods. Our findings reinforce the importance of the common risk factor approach to tackle the adverse effects of tooth loss on diet.

Risk factors associated with tooth loss have been studied; however, the current status of the epidemiological profiles and the impact of the pandemic on the oral health of the elderly is still unknown. This study aims to determine the experience of caries and tooth loss among elderly Chilean citizens in five regions and to identify the risk factors associated with tooth loss. The sample includes 135 participants over 60 years old assessed during COVID-19 lockdown. Sociodemographic variables such as education and RSH (Social Registry of Households) were obtained through a teledentistry platform called TEGO. The history of chronic diseases such as diabetes, obesity, depression and dental caries reported by DMFT index scores were incorporated. The statistical analysis included Adjusted Odds Ratios (ORs) to assess risk factors associated with the lack of functional dentition. Multivariate hypothesis testing was used to compare the mean equality of DMFT and its components between regions (p-value < 0.05). Individuals with RSH ≤ 40% were at higher risk of having no functional dentition with OR 4.56 (95% CI: 1.71, 12.17). The only mean difference between regions was the filled tooth component. Tooth loss was associated with multidimensional lower income, where the elderly belonging to the 40% most vulnerable population had a higher prevalence of non-functional dentition. This study highlights the importance of implementing a National Oral Health Policy that focuses on oral health promotion and minimally invasive dentistry for the most vulnerable population.

Abstract
There is still considerable controversy surrounding the impact of mastication on obesity. The aim of this study was to identify the interplay between the masticatory muscles, teeth, and general muscular fitness and how they contribute to body adiposity in a general German population. This cross-sectional study included 616 participants (300 male, 316 female, age 31-93 years) from the population-based Study of Health in Pomerania. The cross-sectional areas of the masseter, medial and lateral pterygoid muscles were measured using magnetic resonance imaging (MRI), muscular fitness assessed by hand grip strength (HGS) and body fat distribution was measured by bioelectrical impedance analysis (BIA) and MRI. The overall prevalence of obesity was high in our cohort. The cross-sectional area of the masseter muscles was positively associated with the number of teeth, body mass index (BMI) and HGS, and negatively associated with the BIA-assessed body fat when adjusted for age, sex, teeth, and BMI. Especially the correlation was strong (p < 0.001). Analogous relationships were observed between the masseter, HGS and MRI-assessed subcutaneous fat. These associations were most pronounced with masseter, but also significant with both pterygoid muscles. Though the masticatory muscles were affected by the number of teeth, teeth had no impact on the relations between masseter muscle and adiposity. Physical fitness and masticatory performance are associated with body shape, controlled and directed by the relevant muscles.

Abstract
INTRODUCTION Little is known about whether substances inducing tissue protein degeneration in the oral cavity are associated with the number of teeth present in postmenopausal women. We sought to investigate the association of urinary pentosidine and serum homocysteine levels with the number of teeth and subsequent tooth loss in Japanese postmenopausal women. MATERIALS AND METHODS Among participants in the Nagano Cohort Study, 785 postmenopausal women (mean age, 68.1 years) participated in the present study. The number of teeth was re-counted at the time of follow-up in 610 women. Poisson regression analysis was used to investigate differences in the number of teeth among quartiles of pentosidine or homocysteine, adjusting for covariates that correlated with the number of teeth. A Cox proportional hazard model was used to evaluate the association of subsequent tooth loss with pentosidine or homocysteine levels. RESULTS Pentosidine quartiles were not associated with the number of teeth at baseline. Participants in the highest homocysteine quartile had significantly fewer teeth at baseline than those in the third and lowest quartiles (p < 0.001 for both). Those in the second quartile had fewer teeth than those in the third (p = 0.001) and lowest (p < 0.001) quartiles. An increased risk of tooth loss during follow-up was significantly associated with higher urinary pentosidine (hazard ratio = 1.073 for 10 pmol/mgCre; p = 0.001). CONCLUSION Postmenopausal women with higher homocysteine levels had fewer teeth at baseline. A higher pentosidine concentration increased the risk of subsequent tooth loss. High pentosidine or homocysteine concentrations may be associated with tooth loss in postmenopausal women.

Abstract
Obesity and periodontitis are both common health concerns that have given rise to considerable economic and societal burden worldwide. There are established negative relationships between bone metabolism and obesity, obesity and diabetes mellitus (DM), and DM and periodontitis, to name a few, with osteoporosis being considered a long-term complication of obesity. In the oral cavity, bone metabolic disorders primarily display as increased risks for periodontitis and alveolar bone loss. Obesity-driven alveolar bone loss and mandibular osteoporosis have been observed in animal models without inoculation of periodontopathogens. Clinical reports have also indicated a possible association between obesity and periodontitis. This review systematically summarizes the clinical periodontium changes, including alveolar bone loss in obese individuals. Relevant laboratory-based reports focusing on biological interlinks in obesity-associated bone remodeling via processes like hyperinflammation, immune dysregulation, and microbial dysbiosis, were reviewed. We also discuss the potential mechanism underlying obesity-enhanced alveolar bone loss from both the systemic and periodontal perspectives, focusing on delineating the practical considerations for managing periodontal disease in obese patients.

Abstract
According to recent scientific consensus, there is an increasing amount of evidence on the correlation between oral health and cardiovascular disease morbidity. The aim of the present study was to investigate the number of missing teeth, the presence of residual roots with necrotic pulp and teeth with caries, the type of teeth deficiencies, and periodontal status in patients after myocardial infarction (MI). A total of 151 patients after MI and 160 randomly selected controls without history of MI were enrolled in the study. Epidemiological data were collected, and dental examination was performed. Findings showed significantly more women, subjects with lower level of education, lower income, higher percentage of nicotine addiction, more frequent presence of arterial hypertension, diabetes, and obesity than in the study group. Moreover, oral status of the subjects who suffered from MI was inferior to the control group. An average patient from the study group had 11 missing teeth, when compared to four missing teeth in an average control subject (p < 0.0001). The majority of patients in the control group had occlusal contacts in intercuspal position in premolars and molars (group A), in contrast to the patients after MI, who had at least one missing supporting zone (group B) (p < 0.0001). Severe periodontitis was found in 50.3% of tests and in 30.4% of controls (p < 0.0001). A correlation was found between the edentulousness and the risk of myocardial infarction after adjusting for other known risk factors of cardiovascular diseases (OR = 3.8; 95% CI = 3.01−7.21; p < 0.0001). This case−control study showed that MI patients had more missing teeth, more residual roots with necrotic pulp, much higher incidence of edentulism and occlusal contacts in intercuspal position in fewer than four occlusal supporting zones, as well as worse periodontal status when compared to healthy subjects without a history of MI. Due to the methodology of unmatched controls, the presented results must be interpreted with caution.

Abstract
Background To determine the impact of dental status, types, and quality of dental prostheses on body composition, masticatory performance and oral health-related quality of life (OHRQoL). Potential associations between body composition, masticatory performance and OHRQoL were also investigated. Methods This cross-sectional study included 110 older adults who received prosthodontic treatment at the Dental Faculty Clinics at Chulalongkorn University. Participants were categorized according to their dental prostheses: complete denture (CD), removable partial denture (RPD) and fixed partial denture (FPD). Retention and stability of the RPD and CD were evaluated using the CU-modified Kapur and the modified NHANES III criteria to classify denture quality into acceptable and unacceptable. Dental status including posterior occluding pairs and number of remaining natural teeth were assessed intraorally. Dependent variables were body composition, masticatory performance and OHRQoL. Body composition, including muscle mass (kg), bone mass (kg), basal metabolic rate (kcal) and visceral fat (%) were determined through a bioelectrical impedance analysis. Masticatory performance was assessed using a multiple sieve method of peanut mastication. OHRQoL was assessed using the validated Thai version of Oral Impacts on Daily Performances (Thai-OIDP) index. After adjusting for covariates, including age and sex, the associations between oral and dental prosthesis status and body composition, masticatory performance as well as OIDP score were analyzed using multivariable linear and negative binomial regression analyses. Spearman’s correlation was used to determine the potential associations between body composition, masticatory performance and OHRQoL. Results The presence of fewer natural teeth or wearing an unacceptable removable denture were factors associated with lower bone mass, muscle mass and basal metabolic rate, and with a higher visceral fat. Similar dental and removable denture status were also associated with larger peanut particle size and higher OIDP score. Masticatory performance and OHRQoL variables were moderately correlated (Spearman's rho = 0.44). However, body composition was not correlated with masticatory performance or OHRQoL. Conclusions In individuals wearing dental prostheses, factors such as severity of tooth loss, types, and quality of dental prostheses, particularly retention and stability, negatively impacted not only masticatory function and OHRQoL, but also their overall body composition and health. Abstract
Background The prevalence of tooth loss varies across the globe among oldest-old individuals. The presence of fewer than 20 teeth in old age was associated with a decrease in people’s health and quality of life. This paper explored the association between socioeconomics, health-related factors, and tooth loss among the population over the age of 80 in China. Methods The tooth loss status of older Chinese adults was collected with a structured questionnaire from the 8th wave of the Chinese Longitudinal Healthy Longevity Survey (CLHLS). A total of 6716 individuals aged 80 years and above were included. Logistic regression was used to assess the association between socioeconomic statuses, dietary intake at approximately 60 years old, health-related factors, and tooth loss. Results Of the 6716 individuals aged 80 years and above, the composition of the group with fewer teeth for both men and women was statistically significant in many ways. Multivariate logistic regression analyses show that for men, being older than 90 years and being ADL disabled (adjusted OR: 1.71, 95% CI: 1.01–2.89) are factors that are significantly and consistently associated with a higher risk of having fewer than 20 teeth, while having a higher household income per capita (adjusted OR: 0.56, 95% CI: 0.32–0.99) decreases the risk. For women, an age of above 95 years, brushing teeth less than once per day (adjusted OR: 1.96, 95% CI: 1.26–3.03), consuming sugar some of the time as opposed to less than once per month at approximately 60 years old (adjusted OR = 1.74, 95% CI: 1.15–2.62), and being ADL disabled (adjusted OR: 1.70, 95% CI: 1.04–2.77) are factors that are significantly associated with the risk of having fewer than 20 teeth. Conclusion The analysis suggests that socioeconomic status, dietary intake in early old age, and ADL capacity are associated with the risk of having fewer teeth for the population aged 80 years and above, and the risk factors vary between sexes.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Prior reports of positive associations between edentulism and all-cause mortality have been limited by onetime assessments of edentulism and inadequate control of known confounding variables. The authors aimed to assess the association between edentulism and mortality using a longitudinal clinical oral health cohort. METHODS The authors used data from the Department of Veterans Affairs Dental Longitudinal Study, an ongoing, closed-panel cohort study from 1968 through 2019 (N = 1,229). Dentition status was evaluated through triennial clinical examinations. Mortality was assessed via the National Death Registry. The authors used Cox regression models to estimate the association between edentulism and all-cause mortality after covariate adjustment. Furthermore, the authors calculated propensity scores and assessed hazard ratios (HRs) in a trimmed, matched, and inverse probability weighted sample. RESULTS Participants who were edentulous (N = 112) had 1.24 (95% CI, 1.00 to 1.55) times the hazard of all-cause mortality compared with those who were nonedentulous, after adjustment with time-varying covariates. Use of propensity scores in the model resulted in slightly elevated HRs compared with the standard Cox model, regardless of propensity score method; adjusted HRs were 1.35 (95% CI, 1.01 to 1.80) after matching, 1.26 (95% CI, 1.00 to 1.59) after trimming, and 1.29 (95% CI, 1.18 to 1.42) after inverse probability weighting. CONCLUSIONS Edentulism was associated with an increased risk of all-cause mortality in a cohort that captured incident edentulism. This association was consistent after multiple methods to account for confounding. PRACTICAL IMPLICATIONS The findings of this study suggest that edentulism is associated with an increase in risk of mortality, after accounting for salient confounding variables using multiple approaches. Efforts to improve equitable access to tooth-preserving treatments are critical.

Abstract
Background Little is known about the presence of two or more chronic conditions (multimorbidity) on tooth loss between adults and older adults. Understanding the mechanisms of multimorbidity on tooth loss is essential to inform policy development. This study aims to investigate the association between multimorbidity and severity of tooth loss in Brazilian adults and older adults. Methods We analysed data from a nationally representative sample of 88,531 Brazilian individuals aged 18 and over who participated in the 2019 Brazilian Health Survey. Tooth loss was the outcome by two different classifications: functional dentition (lost 1–12 teeth) and severe tooth loss (lost 23–32 teeth). The presence of multimorbidity was the main exposure and based on 13 self-reported doctor-diagnosed chronic diseases that were further categorised into two groups, i.e., ≥2 or ≥ 3 comorbidities. Sociodemographic covariates included sex, age, race, income, level of education and tobacco smoking and geographic region of residency. Multivariate logistic regression models estimated the OR (Odds Ratios) and 95%CI of the associations between multimorbidity and tooth loss. Results For 65,803 adults (aged 18 to 59), the presence of multimorbidity (≥2) was associated with 32% higher odds of having severe tooth loss (95% CI, 1.17; 1.49) and 33% lower odds of having functional dentition (95% CI, 0.60; 0.75). For the 22,728 older adults (aged 60 and older), multimorbidity (≥2) was associated with a 17% higher odds of severe tooth loss (95% CI, 1.06; 1.29) and 23% lower odds of having functional dentition (95% CI 0.70; 0.85). The sensitivity analysis, excluding hypertension, confirmed our findings. Conclusions Brazilian adults and older adults with multimorbidity are more likely to have severe tooth loss and less likely to have functional dentition. Abstract
BACKGROUND The aim of this study was to evaluate the association between systemic non-communicable diseases (NCDs; including lung, kidney, mental and cardiovascular diseases, rheumatoid arthritis, cancer and spinal problems), common risk factors, and tooth loss (TL), as an endpoint of prevalent oral NCDs (periodontitis and caries). METHODS A total of 60,271 noninstitutionalized adults (≥30 years) were evaluated, using data from the 2019 Brazilian National Health Survey. Negative binomial regressions were performed, adjusting for sex, age, ethnicity, educational attainment, oral hygiene, risk factors for periodontitis and caries (diabetes, smoking and a cariogenic diet). The dependent variable was TL expressed as a numerical value. RESULTS Diabetes, current smoking and a frequent cariogenic diet were significantly associated with TL - Incidence Rate Ratio [IRR(95%CI)]: 1.11(1.08-1.14), 1.28(1.25-1.31) and 0.97(0.94-0.99), respectively. Significant associations were observed for TL and all assessed NCDs, except for kidney diseases, cancer and musculoskeletal diseases related to work, with IRR ranging from 1.06 for hypertension and asthma to 1.16 for rheumatoid arthritis. Regular consumption (4-7 days/week) of vegetables, fruits and beef; alcohol up to 8 doses/week; and physical exercise were associated with a lower IRR for TL (p<0.05). Obesity, but not overweight, was associated with increased TL [1.05(1.03-1.07)]. Smoking, hypertension, arthritis, other mental diseases and spinal problems further increased the IRR for TL in individuals with diabetes (p<0.05). CONCLUSION We conclude that certain chronic systemic conditions are associated with TL in Brazilian adults. This is likely due to shared risk factors; however causal associations cannot be examined in this cross-sectional dataset. This article is protected by copyright. All rights reserved.

Abstract
Poor oral health has been linked to coronary heart disease (CHD). Clustering clinical oral conditions routinely recorded in adults may identify their CHD risk profile. Participants from the Paris Prospective Study 3 received, between 2008 and 2012, a baseline routine full-mouth clinical examination and an extensive physical examination and were thereafter followed up every 2 y until September 2020. Three axes defined oral health conditions: 1) healthy, missing, filled, and decayed teeth; 2) masticatory capacity denoted by functional masticatory units; and 3) gingival inflammation and dental plaque. Hierarchical cluster analysis was performed with multivariate Cox proportional hazards regression models and adjusted for age, sex, smoking, body mass index, education, deprivation (EPICES score; Evaluation of Deprivation and Inequalities in Health Examination Centres), hypertension, type 2 diabetes, LDL and HDL serum cholesterol (low- and high-density lipoprotein), triglycerides, lipid-lowering medications, NT-proBNP and IL-6 serum level. A sample of 5,294 participants (age, 50 to 75 y; 37.10% women) were included in the study. Cluster analysis identified 3,688 (69.66%) participants with optimal oral health and preserved masticatory capacity (cluster 1), 1,356 (25.61%) with moderate oral health and moderately impaired masticatory capacity (cluster 2), and 250 (4.72%) with poor oral health and severely impaired masticatory capacity (cluster 3). After a median follow-up of 8.32 y (interquartile range, 8.00 to 10.05), 128 nonfatal incident CHD events occurred. As compared with cluster 1, the risk of CHD progressively increased from cluster 2 (hazard ratio, 1.45; 95% CI, 0.98 to 2.15) to cluster 3 (hazard ratio, 2.47; 95% CI, 1.34 to 4.57; P < 0.05 for trend). To conclude, middle-aged individuals with poor oral health and severely impaired masticatory capacity have more than twice the risk of incident CHD than those with optimal oral health and preserved masticatory capacity (ClinicalTrials.gov NCT00741728).

Abstract
Dental, oral, and craniofacial (DOC) regenerative medicine aims to repair or regenerate DOC tissues including teeth, dental pulp, periodontal tissues, salivary gland, temporomandibular joint (TMJ), hard (bone, cartilage), and soft (muscle, nerve, skin) tissues of the craniofacial complex. Polymeric materials have a broad range of applications in biomedical engineering and regenerative medicine functioning as tissue engineering scaffolds, carriers for cell-based therapies, and biomedical devices for delivery of drugs and biologics. The focus of this review is to discuss the properties and clinical indications of polymeric scaffold materials and extracellular matrix technologies for DOC regenerative medicine. More specifically, this review outlines the key properties, advantages and drawbacks of natural polymers including alginate, cellulose, chitosan, silk, collagen, gelatin, fibrin, laminin, decellularized extracellular matrix, and hyaluronic acid, as well as synthetic polymers including polylactic acid (PLA), polyglycolic acid (PGA), polycaprolactone (PCL), poly (ethylene glycol) (PEG), and Zwitterionic polymers. This review highlights key clinical applications of polymeric scaffolding materials to repair and/or regenerate various DOC tissues. Particularly, polymeric materials used in clinical procedures are discussed including alveolar ridge preservation, vertical and horizontal ridge augmentation, maxillary sinus augmentation, TMJ reconstruction, periodontal regeneration, periodontal/peri-implant plastic surgery, regenerative endodontics. In addition, polymeric scaffolds application in whole tooth and salivary gland regeneration are discussed.

Abstract
BACKGROUND This study aimed to investigate the effect of metabolic syndrome (MetS) on tooth loss in adults from a population-based sample. METHODS Cross-sectional analysis based on data from a cohort study (2009-2014) with adults from Southern Brazil. MetS (exposure), lack of functional dentition and number of lost teeth (outcomes) were assessed using self-reported, lab and clinical data. Possible confounders included sex, age, family income, educational level, smoking status and sugar consumption. The effect of MetS on the outcomes was estimated using conventional logistic or negative binomial regression models. Marginal structural modeling (MSM) with stabilized weights (a counterfactual analytical method) was also used to enhance group comparability and estimate causal effects. RESULTS 1,283 participants had available information for the outcomes. Individuals with MetS were more likely to experience a lack of functional dentition than those without MetS [odds ratio (OR) from logistic regression 1.7, 95% CI 1.0-2.9; OR from MSM 3.2, 95% CI 2.3-4.6]. Moreover, the number of teeth lost was 20% higher in participants with MetS compared to those without MetS in conventional analysis (mean ratio [MR] 1.2, 95% CI 1.1- 1.3). The MR increased to 1.7 (95% CI 1.5-2.0) when using MSM. CONCLUSION Our findings provide evidence on the effect of MetS on tooth loss. This article is protected by copyright. All rights reserved.

Abstract
To analyse the prevalence of dysphagia perception and associated factors among community-dwelling older adults in Pelotas, Brazil. A total of 1447 community-dwelling individuals aged 60 and older participated in a cross-sectional population-based study carried out in 2014. Dysphagia perception was assessed using the following question: "Do you have swallowing difficulties? (Yes/No)". Independent variables included sociodemographic, behavioural and health characteristics. Poisson regression was used to obtain prevalence ratios. Dysphagia perception prevalence was 8.1%, higher among women (PR 1.63, 95% CI 1.07; 2.46) and in subjects older than 80 years (PR 1.88, 95% CI 1.16; 3.03). Older adults with 1-7 years of schooling were more likely to present dysphagia (PR 1.62; 95% CI 1.09; 2.40). Those who did not use dental prosthesis (PR 1.85; 95% CI 1.08; 3.16), who presented dry mouth sensation (PR 4.10; 95% CI 2.59; 6.51) and multimorbidity (PR 30.0; 95% CI 4.09; 219.45) were more likely to present dysphagia perception. The participants who consumed alcohol were 60% less likely to report dysphagia perception (PR 0.43; 95% CI 0.22; 0.86). One out of twelve older adults presented dysphagia perception, and associations with sociodemographic characteristics and other health problems were found. Early identification of dysphagia should be a public health and clinical concern.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Discomfort encountered during oral processing may cause food avoidance and increase the risk of malnutrition in older adults. The aim of the present survey was to explore the relationships between oral health and the oral discomfort experienced while eating in senior people. MATERIALS AND METHODS In a cross-sectional study, oral discomfort was assessed in a sample of 119 independently living participants aged between 35 and 81 years. Statistical analyses were used to identify categorical variables associated with food-related oral discomfort, including age, oral health-related quality of life (OHQoL), saliva secretion, occluding support, oral diseases and denture use. RESULTS Food-related oral discomfort concerned 28.5% of the participants. Within the sample study, the risk of experiencing food-related oral discomfort was increased for participants perceiving average (OR = 7.968, CI 95% = 2.603-24.381, p = .000) or poor OHQoL (OR = 17.109, CI 95% = 4.398-66.552, p = .000) and presenting strictly fewer than 7 occlusal functional units (OFUs) (OR = 3.396, CI 95% = 1.206-9.561, p = .020). Textured foods including fibrous (66.6%), heterogenous (60.6%) and grainy foods (42.4%) were mostly cited as food-related oral discomfort trigger factors. Within the 66-80 years group, participants having 0-6 OFUs were four times more likely to experience oral discomfort related to fibrous foods than participants having more than 7 OFUs (OR = 4.812, CI 95% = 1.192-19.415, p = .024). Within this group, participants having their teeth replaced by denture were also four times more likely to develop oral discomfort related to foods with heterogeneous textures (OR = 4.714, CI 95% = 1.030-21.562, p = .045) and grainy foods (OR = 7.285, CI 95% = 1.308-40.568, p = .023) than non-denture wearers. CONCLUSION Poor oral health conditions may generate oral discomfort with foods in the elderly especially with fibrous, heterogenous and grainy textures, and thus affect mealtime experience.

Abstract
OBJECTIVES This study aimed to systematically review the associations between periodontal diseases/tooth loss and sleep duration/quality. MATERIAL AND METHODS PubMed, Scopus, and Embase databases were searched (up to May 2021) to identify studies that assessed the association between periodontal diseases or number of teeth with sleep quality and sleep duration. Two researchers independently selected the studies and extracted the data. Considering the high heterogeneity among the included studies, meta-analysis was deemed unviable. Results are presented descriptively for sleep quality (studies that have used PSQI), self-reported sleep hours, and other tools that assessed sleep patterns. RESULTS Twenty studies (16 cross-sectional, two case-control, and two cohort) were included. Eight studies used the Pittsburgh Sleep Quality Index (PSQI) to assess quality of sleep. Six of these studies demonstrated that individuals with worse periodontal conditions demonstrated poorer sleep quality. However, most of the included studies that performed adjusted analysis showed no statistically significant association between self-reported hours of sleep and periodontitis. The mean number of present teeth was assessed in four studies; three of them demonstrated lower numbers of present teeth in individuals with inadequate sleep. CONCLUSION The literature shows conflicting results for the association between sleep hours and periodontitis. However, inadequate sleep may be associated with lower number of present teeth and periodontal diseases. Further studies are necessary in order to confirm these results.

Abstract
PURPOSE/AIM To investigate demographic and systemic health characteristics, and the types of dental procedures performed for adults with autism that had sought care at a dental school. MATERIALS AND METHODS De-identified data were collected from the records of patients aged 18+ who have self-reported autism. Each patient's age, gender, BMI, mental health, heart disease, xerostomia, tobacco use, alcohol use, diabetes, use of drugs, seizures, and total number of medications, as well as the type and number of dental codes used in the care of that patient within each code category were included as variables. RESULTS The sample was composed by 244 patients. Mean age was 29.8 years (±12.3), 64.8% were males, and mean BMI was 29.9 (±8.1). Mental health condition was reported by 79.9%, heart disease by 25.4%, xerostomia by 21.7%, 20.9% reported using tobacco, 18.9% reported using alcohol, 14.8% reported having diabetes, 10.2% reported using drugs, and 3.7% reported having seizures. The median number of dental procedures per patient was nine, and exams, preventive, operative, and surgical procedures were the most common ones. CONCLUSIONS Adult patients with autism were overweight/obese young males. Most common dental procedures were exams, followed by preventive, operative, and surgical procedures.

Abstract
Objective: To determine the association of edentulism with different chronic diseases and mental disorders in Mexicans aged 60 years and over. Material and Methods: A cross-sectional study was carried out using data from the World Health Survey for Mexico, in a probabilistic, multi-stage cluster sampling framework. Data for self-report of chronic diseases (diabetes, arthritis, angina pectoris and asthma), mental disorders (depression and schizophrenia) and edentulism were analyzed. Edentulism data were available for 20 of the 32 States of Mexico. Statistical analysis was performed in Stata 14.0 using the svy module for complex sampling (Complex nature under which individuals are sampled). Results: In total 4213 subjects were included, representing a population of 7,576,057 individuals. Mean age was 70.13 ± 7.82 years (range 60 to 98); 56.2% were women. Chronic diseases’ prevalence and mental disorders prevalence were as follows: diabetes 15.0% (N = 1,132,693); arthritis 13.2% (N = 1,001,667); depression 5.5% (N = 414,912); angina pectoris 4.5% (344,315); asthma 3.6% (N = 269,287); and schizophrenia 2.2% (N = 16,988). The prevalence of edentulism was 26.3%, which pertained to 1,993,463 people aged 60 years and over. Angina in women aged 60 to 69 years (p < 0.05) and depression in men aged 70 years and over (p < 0.0001) were associated with higher prevalence of edentulism. Conclusions: There was generally sparse association between edentulism on chronic diseases and mental disorders included in the study, except for women aged 60 to 69 years for angina, and in men aged 70 and over, for depression. Although our findings are misaligned with previous reports, longitudinal studies are required to test causal and temporal relationships between edentulism with chronic diseases and mental disorders.

Abstract
Objectives To describe the oral health profile of individuals who had undergone gastric bypass surgery (GBP) or sleeve gastrectomy (SG) to generate hypotheses for further studies. Material and Methods Fourteen individuals treated with GBP or SG surgery ≥ 2 years ago and with observed and/or perceived oral problems were recruited to a case series. The documentation included clinical and radiographic examinations, biomedical sampling, and self‐reported diet and questionnaires. The results are presented descriptively. Results: The age range was 31 to 66 years and all had a BMI > 25 (range 25.4–44.7). Only four participants were fully dentate. Eleven out of 14 individuals exhibited severe decay. A majority had poor oral hygiene and high bacterial counts. The flow rates of unstimulated saliva were extremely low and hyposalivation was present in ten of the fourteen cases. Most perceived several oral health problems, such as chewing difficulty and tooth hypersensitivity. Conclusions Individuals who had undergone GBP or SG surgery had poor clinically diagnosed oral health and perceived oral health problems. Longitudinal studies are needed to monitor the patients' oral health, from before bariatric surgery to long‐term postoperatively.

Abstract
The objective of this paper is to clarify the rate of abdominal obesity (AO), waist-to-height ratio (WHtR), metabolic syndrome (MetS) and determine the relationship with the masticatory capacity (MC) in terms of total functional tooth units (t-FTU) in a representative sample of older Spanish adults. This cross-sectional study included 544 adult subjects aged 50 or over, who were prospectively selected and who had participated in a survey conducted in a primary dental care service in a Public Oral Health Service in Spain. Anthropometric, clinical variables and t-FTUs were obtained through a calibrated and well-established protocol. Univariate and multivariate binary and multinomial logistic regression analyses were developed. With regards to the t-FTU or MC, it was poor in 60.3%, good in 17.6%, and complete in 22.1% of the sample. The univariate odss ratio (OR) for MetS and AO increased as the MC decreased and as the age group increased. With regards to gender, women presented with an OR of 5.56 (CI 95% 3.70-8.38). With regards to the WHtR-a3 (WHtR grouped into three categories), the univariate ORs were all significant for morbid obesity compared to the healthy group, with a risk of 6.86 (CI 95% 3.23-14.58) for patients with poor MC compared to those with complete MC. Masticatory hypofunctionality could be associated with the presence of MetS. Clinical relevance: The number of t-FTUs is directly related to AO.

Abstract
OBJECTIVE: This study evaluated the prevalence of obesity and associated factors among older adults. METHODS: This was a household-based cross-sectional study involving 282 individuals aged ≥ 60 years recruited in the city of Veranópolis, Brazil, using random probabilistic sampling. Participants underwent a clinical oral examination and completed a structured questionnaire. Obesity was determined based on body mass index (BMI). Individuals were divided into two groups based on the presence (BMI ≥ 30 kg/m2) or absence of obesity (BMI < 30 kg/m2). Uni- and multivariate analyses were performed using Poisson regression with robust variance. RESULTS: The prevalence of obesity was 34% (n = 96). Each 1-year increase in age resulted in a 3.09% decrease in the likelihood of being classified as having obesity (prevalence ratio [PR] = 0.969; 95% confidence interval [95%CI] 0.949 – 0.989). Older adults that reported walking < 5 or ≥ 5 times per week were 39.65 and 37.20% less likely to be classified as obese. The PRs of obesity in former and non-smokers were 4.40 and 5 times higher, respectively, than in current smokers (p < 0.05). Older adults with no access to dental care were 51.72% (p = 0.013) more likely to present with obesity. CONCLUSIONS: There was a high prevalence of obesity among older adults. Obesity was associated with lower age, smoking status, no access to dental care, and a lack of physical activity.

Abstract
AIM To assess obesity as a risk factor for tooth loss over 5 years in an urban sample of Brazilian adults. MATERIALS AND METHODS A total of 1586 individuals were surveyed using a multistage probabilistic approach. Five years later, 635 individuals 14-64 years old were re-examined. An incident case of tooth loss was determined for a participant that had lost at least one tooth over time. Obesity was evaluated by calculating body mass index at baseline and by the change in obesity status over time. RESULTS Incident cases of tooth loss were significantly more frequent among obese (47.1%) than normal-weight individuals (32.4%) (p = .004). Obese individuals had 31% higher risk [relative risk (RR) =1.31; 95% confidence interval (95%CI) 1.04-1.65] for tooth loss than normal-weight individuals adjusting for age, socio-economic status, smoking, dental care and periodontitis. This association was significant for females (RR=1.47, 95%CI 1.08-2.01), but not for males. The risk for tooth loss was also modified by presence of periodontitis at baseline and lifetime smoking exposure. There was an increased risk for tooth loss for those that remained obese than those that remained normal weight. CONCLUSION Obesity is associated with higher risk for tooth loss. This association was modified by sex, periodontal status and smoking.

Abstract
OBJECTIVE SLC22A4/5 single nucleotide polymorphisms (SNPs) have been reported to affect inflammatory diseases. We report the relationship of these polymorphisms with adiposity and tooth loss as elucidated in a 10-year follow-up study. METHODS Participants of the Study of Health in Pomerania (SHIP, N = 4105) were genotyped for the polymorphisms c.1507C > T in SLC22A4 (rs1050152) and -207C > G in SLC22A5 (rs2631367) using allele-specific real-time PCR assays. A total of 1817 subjects, 934 female and 883 male aged 30-80 years, underwent follow-up 10 years later (SHIP-2) and were assessed for adiposity and tooth loss. RESULTS The frequencies of the rarer SLC22A4 TT and SLC22A5 CC alleles were 16.7% and 20.3%, respectively. In women, tooth loss was associated with genotype TT vs. CC with incidence rate ratio IRR = 0.74 (95%C.I. 0.60-0.92) and CC vs. GG IRR = 0.79 (0.65-0.96) for SLC22A4 and SLC22A5 SNPs, respectively. In men, no such associations were observed. In the follow-up examination, the relationship between tooth loss and these SNPs was in parallel with measures of body shape such as BMI, body weight, waist circumference, or body fat accumulation. The association between muscle strength and body fat mass was modified by the genotypes studied. CONCLUSIONS SLC22A4 c.150C > T and SLC22A5 -207C > G polymorphisms are associated with tooth loss and markers of body shape in women but not in men. CLINICAL RELEVANCE Tooth loss may be related to obesity beyond inflammatory mechanisms, conceivably with a genetic background.

Abstract
Background: Parity is thought to be associated with a decreased number of teeth present in women. However, educational level and social status, which are particularly significant risk factors for loss of teeth, have been heterogeneous in previous observations. This cross-sectional survey aimed to clarify the associations of parity with the risk of having <20 teeth in Japanese female nurses participating in the Japan Nurses' Health Study (JNHS). Methods: In the third follow-up questionnaire of the JNHS, 11,299 women aged 27-82 years participated in this study. The number of participants according to age range was 7,225 (63.9%) aged <50 years and 4,074 (36.1%) aged ≥50 years. Information on parity and risk factors for loss of teeth was collected through a baseline questionnaire and then a follow-up questionnaire. Multivariate logistic regression analysis was used to calculate the adjusted odds ratio (OR) and 95% confidence interval (CI) of having <20 teeth according to parity category. Results: Participants ≥50 years who had experienced three or more deliveries had a significantly higher risk of having <20 teeth than those who had not experienced delivery (OR = 1.59, 95% CI = 1.14-2.20), although this finding was not observed in participants <50 years. In addition to parity, age and current smoking may be independent risk factors for having <20 teeth in Japanese nurses. Conclusions: Higher-parity female nurses ≥50 years may be more likely to lose teeth than those who have not experienced delivery.

Abstract
AbstractObesity is a systemic disease, associated with an increased risk of cardiovascular disorders, type 2 diabetes, cancer, asthma, and osteoarthritis. Overweight and obesity have been suggested to be associated with periodontitis as published in studies and narrative summaries. Obesity and periodontal diseases are very prevalent in the world, and both can lead to severe chronic health conditions and impair people’s life quality. Knowledge of how immune mechanisms and inflammatory responses are regulated is critical for understanding the pathogenesis of complex diseases, such as periodontitis. In conditions of overweight, it has been demonstrated that approximately 70–80% of individuals present an adipose tissue turnover that is both structurally and functionally causing of the systemic inflammatory reaction. The objective of this review is to explore the influence of lipoinflammation. The effects of lipoinflammation and obesity on development of periodontal disease are reported together with the exploration of the mechanisms of interaction between these two diseases.

Abstract
AIM To examine the association between the number of teeth and physical function limitation (PFL), as an indicator of frailty, among older adults in the USA. BACKGROUND Physical function limitation is common among the elderly and potentially associated with oral health, particularly the number of extracted teeth. MATERIALS AND METHODS Data from the Behavioral Risk Factor Surveillance System 2014 (BRFSS, 2014), a cross-sectional national interview survey of US population, were analyzed. The number of participating older adults aged 65 and over was 158 962. The association between PFL, outcome and number of extracted teeth, demographic data, socio-economic status, smoking, general health, comorbidity conditions and body mass index (BMI) was assessed using logistic regression analyses. RESULTS The prevalence of PFL was 28%. In the fully adjusted model, the number of extracted teeth had a significant association with PFL: edentulous older adults had higher odds for PFL, (odds ratio [OR]:1.36; 95%CI: 1.22, 1.52). Similarly, those who lost 6 teeth or more but not all were likely to have PFL (OR 1.35: 95% CI: 1.23, 1.48). CONCLUSIONS There was a significant association between the number of extracted teeth and PFL among US older adults aged 65 and more, based on the data from BRFSS 2014. The findings indicate that losing teeth may be a potential risk for PFL.

Abstract
BACKGROUND We aimed to describe the prevalence of different tooth loss outcomes along with the use of dentures and implants among Australians aged 15+ years across socioeconomic and demographic groups. In addition, we performed time trend analyses of tooth loss. METHODS Data from the National Study of Adult Oral Health 2017-18 included gender, age, residential location, household income, Socio-Economic Indexes for Areas, possession of dental insurance and pattern of dental visiting. Outcomes were complete tooth loss, inadequate dentition, average number of missing teeth, denture wearing and implants. We compared our findings with data from previous surveys carried out in 1987-88 and 2004-06. RESULTS Tooth loss decreased from 14.4% in 1987-88 to 6.4% in 2004-06, and to 4.0% in 2017-18. The proportion of people with lack of functional dentition halved from 20.6% 1987-88 to 10.2% in 2017-18; the average number of teeth lost due for any reason slightly reduced from 2004-06 (6.1) to 2017-18 (5.7). Tooth loss increased with age and was higher among socioeconomically disadvantaged, uninsured and those with unfavourable pattern of dental visiting groups than in their counterparts. CONCLUSIONS An overall improvement in tooth retention was identified over the last decades. However, socioeconomic inequalities persist.

Abstract
This study evaluated the association of functional dentition with 12-month changes in body measurements and nutrient intake among older adults. Data from 651 community dwellers, aged 60 years and over, in Phetchaburi, Thailand, were analysed (retention rate: 83%). Data were collected via interviews (including a semi-structured food frequency questionnaire), anthropometric measurements and dental examinations. Associations were tested in linear regression models adjusted for baseline sociodemographic factors, behaviours, chronic conditions and medications. On average, participants experienced a significant increase in body mass index (BMI) and significant decreases in waist circumference (WC) and triceps skinfold thickness (TSF). A negative, albeit not significant, association between functional dentition and change in BMI was observed after adjusting for confounders. Whilst participants who had non-functional dentition without dentures experienced increases in BMI (predicted mean change: 0.25; 95% Confidence Interval: 0.09, 0.41), those who had non-functional dentition with dentures (0.21; 95%CI: −0.08, 0.50) and functional dentition (−0.07; 95%CI: −0.42, 0.28) remained stable. No similar trends were noted for WC or TSF. Functional dentition was not associated with changes in nutrient intake either. The findings provide little evidence on the association of functional dentition with short-term changes in nutrient intake or nutritional status.

Abstract
OBJECTIVE To estimate the effect of income at birth on adulthood tooth loss due to dental caries in 539 adults from the 1982 Pelotas birth cohort. METHODS Family income was collected at birth. Tooth loss was clinically assessed when individuals were aged 31. Dental visit and oral hygiene at age 25 were considered mediators. Confounders included maternal skin color, and individual's skin color, sex, and income in adulthood. Marginal structural modeling was used to estimate the controlled direct effect of income at birth on tooth loss due to dental caries that was neither mediated by the use of dental service nor oral hygiene. RESULTS Forty-three percent of the individuals of low income at birth lost one/two teeth, and 23% lost three or more; among those non-poor, the prevalence was 30% and 14%, respectively. Poor individuals at birth had a 70% higher risk for missing teeth in adulthood than those non-poor. The risk of losing one/two (risk ratio 1.68) and three or more teeth (risk ratio 3.84) was also higher among those of low income at birth. CONCLUSIONS Economic disadvantage at birth had an effect on tooth loss due to dental caries at age 31 not mediated by individual risk factors.

Abstract
Oral diseases produce enormous productivity loss. However, epidemiological evidence of work stress and tooth loss is scarce. The aim of this study was to examine the association of work stress, according to effort-reward imbalance (ERI), with tooth loss. We conducted a cross-sectional study using data obtained between 2010 and 2011 in Japan. This study included 1,195 employees aged 25-50 years old (response rate=32%). The dependent variable was self-reported tooth loss (having or not). The independent variable was a dichotomized ERI ratio (>1.4 and ≤1.4). Age, sex, sociodemographic variables, work-related factors, and health-related variables were adjusted. Psychological distress was used as a potential mediator. We also examined an additive interaction between support from supervisors and ERI. The median age was 37, and 48% were women. After adjusting for the covariates, ERI was still associated with tooth loss (prevalence ratio=1.20 [95% confidence interval=1.01, 1.42] from Poisson regression models with a robust error variance). Psychological distress partially explained the association, and support from supervisors significantly attenuated the association. In conclusion, high ERI ratio was still associated with an increased risk of tooth loss among working adults.

Abstract
Background:
Obesity represents one of the main health problems worldwide and is considered a risk factor for several diseases, including periodontitis, which is a microbially-associated inflammatory disease affecting the tooth-supporting structures.
Objective:
The aim of this review was to report the current direct and indirect evidence concerning the possible association between obesity and periodontitis and their putative molecular links.
Methods:
A literature search was conducted between January 1999 and September 2019, in PubMed/MEDLINE and Science Direct databases, using pertinent keyword combined by Boolean operators. Through a multi-step screening process (literature search; articles title and abstract evaluation and full-text reading), studies fitting inclusion/exclusion criteria were considered for the review.
Results:
35 studies were included in the present review (17 observational studies; 7 systematic reviews; 11 systematic reviews with meta-analysis), focusing on the direct and indirect evidence of the possible association between obesity and periodontitis and their potential etiopathogenic molecular links
Conclusion:
Although the majority of the studies reported a positive association between obesity and periodontitis, the heterogeneity of the classification criteria and of the clinical parameters employed in the studies for both obesity and periodontitis evaluation, complicated the comparison of the results, thus considered inconclusive. Although several putative molecular pathogenic links between obesity and periodontitis have been highlighted, further studies, with longer follow-ups and with homogeneous clinical criteria, are needed to better understand the putative relation between obesity and periodontal disease.
