Abstract
Objective This study assessed possible associations among physical activity (PA), sitting time (ST), metabolic syndrome (MetS), and the individual components thereof. We analyzed the entire study sample and subpopulations stratified by visceral fat area (VFA). We hypothesized that individuals with elevated VFA might respond differently to modifiers of metabolic health, including PA and ST. Methods This cross-sectional study, conducted between March and May 2010, enrolled 957 adults with abdominal magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) aged 40-65 years living in the urban communities in Hangzhou, China. PA and ST were recorded using the standard International Physical Activity Questionnaire (IPAQ) and categorized into three levels. The ethnicity-specific cutoff for central obesity was VFA ≥ 80 cm2 on MRI according to Chinese population-based research. Multiple logistic regression models were used to analyze the associations between PA, ST, MetS and its components. Results In the total subject population, participants reporting high level of PA were at a lower risk of MetS (OR = 0.46, 95% CI: 0.25, 0.86) than those declaring low PA. In the subgroup population with VFA ≥ 80 cm2 (ie, with central obesity), moderate-to-high PA levels were associated with a lower risk of MetS (p for trend < 0.05) and a lower risk of decreased high-density lipoprotein cholesterol (HDL-C) concentrations (p for trend < 0.05). In addition, ST > 3 h/day was a risk factor for both MetS (p for trend < 0.05) and hypertriglyceridemia (p for trend < 0.05) in the total subject population. While in the central obesity subgroup, ST > 3 h/day was found a stronger risk factor. Conclusion Our study suggests that moderate-to-high levels of PA may have a role in prevention of MetS, and ST > 3 h/day was associated with a higher risk of MetS, particularly in individuals with central obesity.

Abstract
Background Several previous studies found a positive relationship between metabolic syndrome (MetS) and thyroid cancer (TC) risk. However, there is no research that has studied the relationship between the metabolic score for insulin resistance (METS-IR), a novel surrogate marker for IR, and TC incidence. Thus, we designed this retrospective cohort study to evaluate the relationship between the incidence of TC and METS-IR. Method We analyzed a cohort of 314,321 Korean adults aged over 40 years who participated in the National Health Screening Program from 2009 to 2010. The individuals were divided into four groups based on METS-IR quartiles. Follow-up was until the diagnosis of TC or death, or until December 31, 2019, if neither. The relationship between METS-IR and TC incidence was analyzed using the Cox proportional-hazards model with multi-variable adjustments. Results A total of 4,137 participants (1.3%) were diagnosed with TC during a mean follow-up of 9.5 ± 1.5 years. The population with Q1 METS-IR scores showed higher disease-free probabilities than those with Q4 METS-IR scores (p <0.001). The hazard ratio (95% confidential interval) for TC incidence in Q2, Q3, and Q4 METS-IR value were 1.14 (1.05 to 1.25), 1.21 (1.11 to 1.33), and 1.30 (1.18 to 1.42) compared with Q1 of METS-IR, respectively. The incidence of TC tended to increase with increasing METS-IR values in the total population, especially the male population in the restricted cubic spline. In subgroup analysis, the TC risk was more pronounced in the subgroups under 65 and with a BMI < 25 kg/m2. Conclusion METS-IR was positively correlated with TC incidence in Korea.

Abstract
BACKGROUND The association of asthma and metabolic syndrome (MetS) among adolescents and young adults (AYAs) remains unclear, as well as the role of obesity in this relationship. METHODS AYAs aged 12-25 years who participated in the 2011-2020 National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey were included in this cross-sectional analysis. The moderating effect of obesity (age- and sex-adjusted body mass index ≥ 95th%ile for adolescents or ≥ 30 kg/m2 for adults) on asthma and MetS were evaluated in four groups: 1) both asthma and obesity; 2) asthma and no obesity; 3) obesity and no asthma; and 4) healthy controls with no obesity/asthma. RESULTS A total of 7,709 AYAs (53.9% aged 12-18 years, 51.1% males, and 54.4% non-Hispanic White) were included in this analysis. 3.6% (95% CI 2.8-4.3%) had obesity and asthma, 7.6% (95% CI 6.8-8.4%) had asthma and no obesity, 21.4% (95% CI 19.6-23.2%) had obesity and no asthma, and 67.4% (95% CI 65.4-69.4%) had neither obesity nor asthma. The estimated prevalence of MetS was greater among those with both obesity and asthma versus those with only asthma (4.5% [95% CI 1.7-7.3%] vs. 0.2% [95% CI 0-0.5%], p < 0.001). Compared to healthy controls, those with both obesity and asthma had ∼10 times higher odds of having MetS (aOR 10.5, 95% CI 3.9-28.1). CONCLUSIONS Our results show the association between MetS and asthma is stronger in AYAs with BMI-defined obesity. Efforts to prevent and treat obesity may reduce MetS occurrence in AYAs with asthma.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Non-communicable diseases (NCDs), notably cardiovascular disease and type 2 diabetes mellitus, are largely driven by metabolic syndrome (MetS), a cluster of critical risk factors. Despite extensive research, the progression of MetS, especially in Indonesia, has received limited attention. This research tracks adult MetS risk dynamics in a populous Bogor District cohort, providing crucial insights into its evolving nature. METHODS This prospective open cohort study analysed secondary data from the Special Research - Cohort Study of Non-Communicable Diseases by the Ministry of Health, Republic of Indonesia from 2011 to 2018. The final sample was 1,376 Indonesian adult participants, all residents of Bogor District. MetS outcome, dietary assessment, physical activity, and biomarkers were analysed every two consecutive years. RESULTS The risk of overweight and obese participants developing MetS was 2.4 and 4.4 times higher, respectively (95% CI: 1.176-3.320 and 3.345-5.740) than those with body mass index (BMI) in the normal range. Participants who reported less intentional physical exercise had a MetS risk 1.5 times higher (95% CI: 1.034-2.109) than those with more intentional physical exercise. The role of diet is also significant, evidenced by a 30% reduction in MetS risk for people with fat intakes in the 2nd quartile compared to the 1st quartile (95% CI: 0.505-0.972). Meanwhile, a carbohydrate intake in the 2nd quartile increased the risk of MetS 1.5 times (95% CI: 1.063-2.241) in comparison with the 1st quartile. CONCLUSIONS Notably, participants with underweight BMI exhibited the highest cumulative survival of MetS, while those with obese BMI recorded the lowest cumulative survival. There is an urgent need for strategic interventions to enhance the existing early detection and NCD monitoring program. This involves a targeted focus on promoting a community-based healthy lifestyle in the Bogor District. The study emphasizes the importance of tailored public health measures to address specific risk factors identified in the local context, aiming to mitigate the prevalence and impact of MetS in the population.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Metabolic syndrome (MetS) known as a risk factor for cardiovascular diseases (CVDs) has developed into a major source of health issue, especially for the elderly. In the present study, we investigated the association between continuous MetS (cMetS) score and its components with electrocardiographic (ECG) abnormalities in the community-dwelling older adults. METHODS This cross-sectional study is derived from the second phase of BEH cohort study which is conducted on individuals aged over 60 years old. Standard 12-lead ECGs were recorded and coded by qualified physicians and continuous values of metabolic syndrome risk scores (cMetS) were measured. Data regarding socio-demographic, medical history, and lifestyle variables were collected by trained interviewers. The multinomial regression analysis was used to investigate the relationship between cMetS and its components with ECG abnormalities in the included participants. RESULTS 2426 individuals (mean age ± standard deviation: 69.30 ± 6.33 years) were included in the final analysis. Overall, 22.5% of the participants showed ECG abnormalities. Among these, 8.0% (n = 139) of participants had minor and 14.6% (n = 354) had major ECG abnormalities. In the final models, cMetS (OR = 1.04), mean arterial pressure (MAP((OR = 1.01), and higher fasting blood glucose (FBG) (OR = 1.01) increased the risk of ECG abnormalities (p < 0.05). Also, cMetS (OR = 1.05) and MAP (OR = 1.02) were associated with an increased risk of major ECG abnormalities (p < 0.05). CONCLUSION MetS and MAP were significantly associated with ECG abnormalities. The results of the present study suggest that ECG screening in the older population with MetS could potentially help to detect those at the higher risk of CVDs.

Abstract
INTRODUCTION Abdominal obesity is a pattern of obesity that has been considered a public health problem. Physical activity is considered an important factor for the prevention of abdominal obesity. Increased time in sedentary behavior has been associated with negative health outcomes, including abdominal obesity. OBJECTIVE The aim of this study was to investigate which combination of leisure-time physical activity and sedentary behavior contributes most to the prevention of abdominal obesity in adults participating in ELSA-Brasil (Longitudinal Study of Adult Health). METHODS The study was cross-sectional and participants from the first follow-up of the ELSA-Brasil cohort (2012-2014) were analyzed. The independent variables were physical activity, assessed by IPAQ, and sedentary behavior, assessed by a standard questionnaire applied in ELSA-Brasil; the dependent variable was abdominal obesity, determined by waist circumference. The covariates analyzed were the following: age, education, binge drinking, smoking and menopause. The associations between the dependent variable and the independent variables were analyzed using logistic regression. The odds ratio with 95 CI% was estimated. RESULTS For men, the combinations were more significant when they were more physically active and spent less time on the sedentary behaviors analyzed, on both a weekday and a weekend day. For menopausal women, both younger and older, all associations of the combinations between sufficient leisure-time physical activity and little time spent in sedentary behaviors contributed to the prevention of abdominal obesity. In non-menopausal women, positive associations were observed in almost all combinations between leisure-time physical activity and sedentary behaviors, with some results that were not statistically significant among younger women. CONCLUSIONS Our results showed that being sufficiently active and reducing the time spent in sedentary behavior was the combination that contributed the most to the prevention of abdominal obesity, both in men and women.

Abstract
Metabolic syndrome is a prevalent condition in adults over the age of 65 and is a risk factor for developing cardiovascular disease and type II diabetes. Thus, methods to track the condition, prevent complications and assess symptoms and risk factors are needed. Here we discuss sweat-based wearable technologies as a potential monitoring tool for patients with metabolic syndrome. We describe several key symptoms that can be evaluated that could employ sweat patches to assess inflammatory markers, glucose, sodium, and cortisol. We then discuss the challenges with material property, sensor integration, and sensor placement and provide feasible solutions to optimize them. Together with a list of recommendations, we propose a pathway toward successfully developing and implementing reliable sweat-based technologies to monitor metabolic syndrome. Metabolic syndrome is a risk factor for developing cardiovascular disease and type II diabetes. Abstract
AIM Our previous study demonstrated that chronic intermittent hypobaric hypoxia (CIHH) improved iron metabolism disorder in obese rats through the downregulation of hepcidin. This study aimed to observe the molecular mechanism of CIHH in improving iron metabolism disorders, especially by Janus kinase/signal transducer and activation of the transcription (JAK/STAT) signaling pathway in metabolic syndrome (MS) rats. METHODS Six-week-old male Sprague-Dawley rats were randomly divided into four groups: CON, CIHH (subjected to hypobaric hypoxia simulating 5000-m altitude for 28 days, 6 h daily), MS (induced by high fat diet and fructose water), and MS+CIHH. The serum levels of glucose, lipid metabolism, iron metabolism, interleukin-6 (IL-6), erythropoietin (Epo) and hepcidin were measured. The protein expressions of JAK2, STAT3, STAT5, bone morphogenetic protein 6 (BMP6), small mothers against decapentaplegic 1 (SMAD1) and hepcidin were examined. The mRNA expressions of erythroferrone (ERFE) and hepcidin were analyzed. RESULTS The MS rats displayed obesity, hyperglycemia, hyperlipidemia, iron metabolism disorder, increased IL-6 and hepcidin serum levels, upregulation of JAK2/STAT3 signaling pathway, decreased Epo serum levels, downregulation of STAT5/ERFE signaling pathway in spleen, upregulation of BMP/SMAD signaling pathway in liver, and increased hepcidin mRNA and protein expression compared to CON rats. All the aforementioned abnormalities in MS rats were ameliorated in MS + CIHH rats. CONCLUSIONS CIHH improved iron metabolism disorders, possibly by inhibiting IL-6/JAK2/STAT3 and activating Epo/STAT5/ERFE signaling pathway, thus downregulating hepcidin in MS rats.

Abstract
STUDY QUESTION Is there a relationship between pregnancy termination history and metabolic syndrome (MetS), and if so, is the relationship moderated by physical activity (PA)? SUMMARY ANSWER Induced abortion, and both miscarriage and induced abortion, increased the risk of MetS, while leisure PA attenuated the effects of induced abortion, and both miscarriage and induced abortion, on the risk of MetS. WHAT IS KNOWN ALREADY Pregnancy termination history is a risk factor for cardiovascular disease, but studies on women's history of pregnancy termination and MetS are limited. PA is a preventive behavior for MetS, but its modification effect on any association between pregnancy termination history and MetS is unknown. STUDY DESIGN, SIZE, DURATION The cross-sectional study included 53 702 women (age range of 30-79 years old) from southwestern China who participated in the China Multi-Ethnic Cohort (CMEC) study from May 2018 to September 2019. PARTICIPANTS/MATERIALS, SETTING, METHODS Participants self-reported both the number and type of pregnancy termination. PA was assessed primarily by asking participants about the cumulative time they spent doing PA either as their occupation, transportation, housework, and leisure activity in the past year. MetS was defined according to the National Cholesterol Education Program Adult Treatment Panel III (ATP III) criteria. MAIN RESULTS AND THE ROLE OF CHANCE After adjusting for all confounders, the risk of MetS was significantly increased in women who experienced induced abortion alone, and both miscarriage and induced abortion, with odds ratios (ORs) of 1.08 (95% CI = 1.03-1.13) and 1.20 (95% CI = 1.08-1.33), respectively. A dose-response relationship was observed between the number of induced abortions and MetS, with the risk increasing by 3.0% for every additional induced abortion (OR = 1.03, 95% CI = 1.01-1.05). Leisure PA had a significant modification effect on the relationship between pregnancy termination history and MetS, as leisure PA attenuates the negative effects of induced abortion on MetS. LIMITATIONS, REASONS FOR CAUTION Causality cannot be established in this study. Information on pregnancy termination and PA was collected by self-report, which might be subject to recall bias. WIDER IMPLICATIONS OF THE FINDINGS A history of induced abortion was associated with an increased risk of MetS, and the risk increased with the number of induced abortions. Leisure PA attenuated the negative effect of induced abortion on MetS, whereas occupational and transportation PA amplified the negative effect of induced abortion on glucose. Abstract
The aim of this study was to determine the association between regular leisure-time physical activity (LTPA) and various body mass index (BMI) categories in Taiwanese young adults. A total of 10,802 young adults (18−44 years) were enrolled in a national telephone survey. The questionnaire data from this survey included socio-demographic characteristics, zip code of residence, LTPA behaviors, self-reported health status, and self-evaluated anthropometric measurements, which included height, body weight, and BMI. Regular and non-regular LTPA behaviors were defined as follows: (1) Regular LTPA: participants who reported breathing quickly and sweating when participating in 150−300 min per week of moderate-intensity LTPA or 75−150 min per week of vigorous-intensity LTPA. (2) Non-regular LTPA: the rest of the participants. The various BMI categories were defined as (1) underweight (BMI < 18.5 kg/m2), (2) normal weight (18.5 ≤ BMI < 24 kg/m2), (3) overweight (24 ≤ BMI < 27 kg/m2), and (4) obese (BMI ≥ 27 kg/m2). When compared with participants with non-regular LTPA, participants with regular LTPA exhibited lower risks of being overweight (odds ratio [OR], 0.837; 95% confidence interval [CI] 0.738−0.948) and underweight (OR, 0.732; 95% CI 0.611−0.876). However, there was no significant relationship between regular LTPA and obesity risk when using non-regular LTPA as the baseline after adjusting for potential confounders. The study results revealed that regular LTPA effectively reduced the risks of being underweight and overweight. However, for people with obesity, regular LTPA was unable to significantly decrease their obesity risk.

Abstract
The metabolic syndrome occurs in almost 25% of the world’s adult population. A workplace is an ideal place for implementing health interventions to reduce metabolic syndrome risk factor. One of the Indonesian government’s health programs to improve public health and prevent non-communicable diseases is called Healthy Living Community Movement (HLCM). This research aims to determine the effectiveness of HLCM implementation to overcome metabolic syndrome among female workers in Indonesia. This quasi-experimental study included 42 female workers with metabolic syndrome, which were divided into an intervention group and a control group. The intervention group was given an 8-weeks combination of health education and implementation of HLCM activities that consisted of fruit and vegetables provision as much as 400 grams per day and physical exercise for at least 150 minutes per week. The intervention for control group included only health education. Subjects’ parameters were measured and adherence to HLCM activities was evaluated by a questionnaire. Adherence to HLCM implementation was carried out by 52.4% of the subjects which resulted in a significant reduction in their waist circumference, systolic and diastolic blood pressure, and triglyceride levels (p < 0.05, respectively). After 8 weeks of interventions, 13 subjects (65%) from the intervention group were no longer included in the metabolic syndrome criteria, while in the control group only 2 subjects (10.5%) were not included. Therefore, the implementation of HLCM in the workplace is effective in overcoming the metabolic syndrome.

Abstract
The independent associations of air pollution and Physical activity (PA) with metabolic syndrome (MetS) were inconsistent, while the joint associations between PA and air pollution with MetS were still unknown. We aimed to (1) further confirm the independent associations of PA and air pollution; (2) examine whether PA would attenuate the positive associations of air pollutants with MetS. We included 13,418 adults above 45 years old in this study. We defined MetS according to the Joint Interim Societies. The concentration of air pollutants (including fine particulate matter (PM2.5), inhalable particles (PM10), ozone (O3), nitrogen dioxide (NO2), sulfur dioxide (SO2), and carbon monoxide (CO)) were estimated by ground-based measurements and satellite remote sensing products. We assessed the level of PA by metabolic equivalent (MET)-hour/week by summing the MET of all activities. We applied logistic regression models with sampling weight to explore the independent and joint associations of PA and air pollutants on MetS. Interaction plots were conducted to exhibit estimates of air pollutants on MetS as a function of PA. We found that all air pollutants were positively associated with the odds of MetS, while PA showed beneficial associations with MetS. The associations of air pollution on MetS decreased accompanied the increase of PA, while the detrimental effects between air pollutants and MetS did not be reversed by PA. In conclusion, PA may attenuate the associations of air pollutants with MetS, although in polluted areas, suggesting that keeping PA might be an effective way to reduce the adverse effects of air pollution with MetS.

Abstract
The dose-response association between sedentary time and the risk of metabolic syndrome is unclear, which indicates an important knowledge gap in public health. The objective of this study was to determine the categorical and continuous dose-response associations between sedentary time and the risk of metabolic syndrome. A systematic literature search of English articles published in PubMed, CINHAL, Embase, and Web of Science Core Collection prior to June 2022 was conducted. All cohort and cross-sectional studies that examined the association between sedentary time and the risk of metabolic syndrome were considered, and duplicate and non-related studies were excluded. Data extraction using a standardized chart and quality assessment using two appraisal tools were also performed. Two independent reviewers were involved in these processes. In categorical meta-analyses, the pooled effect sizes for metabolic syndrome associated with different categories of sedentary time were calculated by comparing the highest and intermediate with the lowest categories. In continuous meta-analyses, the linear and nonlinear dose-response associations were estimated using generalized least squares and restricted cubic spline models, respectively. Data were collected and analyzed from March to June 2022. Four prospective cohort studies and 22 cross-sectional studies with 105,239 participants and 16,185 MetS cases were included in this study. In categorical analyses, both intermediate (median duration: 4.11 h/day; pooled OR: 1.17, 95% CI: 1.08-1.26, P < 0.001) and high levels (median duration: 7.26 h/day; pooled OR: 1.71, 95% CI: 1.43-2.04, P < 0.001) of total sedentary time were significantly associated with an increased risk of metabolic syndrome. Similarly, a significant association between screen time and the risk of metabolic syndrome was also found in intermediate (median duration: 2.22 h/day; pooled OR: 1.20, 95% CI: 1.10-1.32, P < 0.001) and high levels (median duration: 3.40 h/day; pooled OR: 1.63, 95% CI: 1.44-1.86, P < 0.001) of exposure. Of note, these associations were significantly stronger in women. Different patterns of the behavior-disease association were not observed in children, adolescents, and adults. The findings of continuous meta-analyses could not provide solid evidence for the linearity and nonlinearity of the behavior-disease association. This study demonstrated that long-time sedentary behavior was associated with a higher risk of MetS independent of physical activity and the patterns of association varied by gender instead of age. These findings have implications for future guideline recommendations on physical activity, sedentary behavior, and prevention of metabolic syndrome.

Abstract
Background Chinese Tibetans have long hours of sitting without much physical activity given their religious behavior, raising potential harmful health hazards. However, the relationship between sedentary time and metabolic syndrome (MetS) has not been investigated in Chinese Tibetans. Methods From Jan 2021 to Jun 2022, residents in Garze Tibetan Autonomous Prefecture in Southwest China's Sichuan province were recruited using a multi-stage, stratified, random-cluster sampling strategy. MetS were ascertained using definition proposed by the International Diabetes Federation. Associations between sedentary time and the prevalence of MetS in the total sample and by age and sex were estimated using logistic regression models. Results Among 971 Chinese Tibetan participants (mean age 41.1 years and 73.8% female), 319 (32.9%) were diagnosed as having MetS. We found positive associations of sedentary time over 11 h per day with the prevalence of MetS in crude (OR: 1.23; 95% CI: 1.12-1.36, p < 0.001), age and sex adjusted (OR: 1.18; 95% CI: 1.08-1.29, p < 0.001), and fully adjusted (OR: 1.17; 95% CI: 1.08-1.29, p < 0.001) models, compared to those who had <8 h of sedentary time per day. Sensitivity analyses suggest consistent positive association between sedentary time and each metric of MetS. Conclusions Sedentary time longer than 11 h per day is significantly associated with increased risk of MetS, suggesting that polices to advocate health education may alleviate the health burden of MetS among Tibetans in China.

Abstract
The metabolic syndrome is currently becoming more common. It is a significant public health concern as it is epidemic affecting populations in many regions of the world. In Magadan region no research has been carried out to study the frequency of components of the metabolic syndrome among northerners. This survey was performed to assess the occurrence of the main and additional components of the metabolic syndrome among 17 to 74 year old residents of the Northern region. Two hundred and forty north born Caucasians participated in the study: male subjects at their young age, working age, and retirement age, all belonging to the territory of Magadan region. We used photometric, immunochemiluminescent research methods, as well as standard methods for assessing body mass index and cardiovascular system. The metabolic syndrome factors were determined in accordance with the criteria of the National Cholesterol Education Program (NCEP), the Adult Treatment Program III (ATP III), the International Diabetes Federation (IDF), and the Consensus of International Experts in Cardiology and Endocrinology. We analyzed five main components of the metabolic syndrome (overweight, carbohydrate metabolic impairments hypertension, hypertriglyceridemia, hypoalphacholesterolemia) and three additional components (presence of insulin resistance, purine metabolism disorder, deficient and insufficient concentrations of vitamin D). Combinations of the components were also studied through the examined age groups. According to the ATP III, NCEP and IDF criteria, the metabolic syndrome was more common in elderly subjects (47%) than in working age (21%) or young examinees (3%). Older males tended to exhibit higher frequency of both the main and additional factors of metabolic syndrome. The total index of the occurrence of metabolic syndrome factors in the group of young men was 101%; in the group of men of working age - 180%, and in men of retirement age - 274%. The results on occurrence of the metabolic syndrome components observed in the surveyed groups of northerners can make an information data base, which we assume can be applied when planning and carrying out scientifically grounded preventive measures, which will improve subjective quality of life and its expectancy under the North conditions.

Abstract
BACKGROUND This study was determined to describe the patterns of lifestyle behaviors and their associations with metabolic profiles among Chinese urban and rural adults. METHODS This was a cross-sectional study set in the Nanjing (5,824) and Hefei (20,269) Community Cardiovascular Risk Surveys from 2011-2013, using random cluster sampling. Questionnaires were completed via face-to-face interview, and data on lifestyle behaviors including daily night sleep duration, nap duration (if any) and sitting time, and weekly physical activity (measured using the International Physical Activity Questionnaire, in metabolic equivalents of task × minutes, and separated into walking and moderate-to-vigorous physical activity (MOVPA) according to intensity) was collected. The patterns of physical activity in Chinese urban and rural populations and the metabolic profile in each pattern were identified by the latent class analysis. RESULTS Six distinct clusters were determined, with the sizes ranging from 45% to 5% of the total population. For example, the most common cluster was associated with a sufficient night and nap sleep duration, a long sitting time, and above WHO recommended physical activities for both walking and MOVPA, and the smallest cluster was featured by its huge amount of MOVPA and limited amount of walking activity. Difference in proportion of each cluster was observed between the two survey sites. No obvious abnormal blood measures were seen in any cluster. CONCLUSION Common lifestyle behavior clusters were described, leading to a better understanding of people's routine activities.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Metabolic syndrome is one of the leading global public health and clinical challenges, with increasing prevalence figures ranging from 10% to as high as 84%. There is a 5-fold increase in metabolic syndrome associated with type 2 diabetes and a 2-fold increase associated with the development of cardiovascular disease. The calorie-dense diet and sedentary life patterns are the most important contributory factors that have been established. OBJECTIVE This study is aimed at assessing metabolic syndrome and its associated factors among patients with type 2 diabetes attending chronic follow-up units at hospitals in Southwest Ethiopia, in 2020. METHODS This study was conducted at hospitals in Southwest Ethiopia, using an institutional-based cross-sectional study design from September 1, 2020, to August 30, 2021. Data was collected from 422 type 2 diabetics through face-to-face interviews using structured and pretested questionnaires. Data were entered into Epi-data version 4.4.1 and exported for analysis to the Statistical Package for Social Sciences 25. The magnitude of metabolic syndrome was determined by using the National Cholesterol Education Program Third Adult Treatment Panel III criteria. Bivariate and multivariable logistic regression analyses were used to evaluate associated factors for the outcome variable. A P value of less than 0.05 was considered statistically significant. Result and Conclusion. Out of the 422 sample sizes, 394 type 2 diabetics participated in this study, giving a response rate of 93.36%. The overall prevalence of metabolic syndrome among type 2 diabetics in this study was 68.3%, using the National Cholesterol Education Program and Third Adult Treatment Panel criteria. The associated factors for metabolic syndrome among type 2 diabetics are urban residency, old age, physical inactivity, salt intake, inadequate fruit and vegetable consumption, palm oil, and eating meat.

Abstract
OBJECTIVE This study aimed to determine the independent and joint associations of sedentary time (ST) and physical activity (PA) with metabolic syndrome (MetS) and its components among Chinese adults. METHODS The study analyzed data from 4,865 adults aged ≥ 18 years who participated in the 2009 and 2015 China Health and Nutrition Surveys (CHNS). Four types of leisure ST and three types of PA self-reported at baseline were collected. Multivariable logistic regressions were used to determine the independent and joint associations of ST and PA with the odds of MetS or its components. RESULTS For independent effects, higher levels of television time and total leisure ST was associated with higher MetS risk [odds ratio ( OR) 1.3, 95% confidence interval ( CI) 1.1-1.6, P < 0.001; OR 1.4, 95% CI 1.2-1.8, P < 0.001, respectively]. The MetS risk in the computer time > 7 hours/week (h/w) group was higher than that in the < 7 h/w group in ( OR 1.5, 95% CI 1.2-1.9). Higher levels of moderate-to-vigorous-intensity physical activity (MVPA) and total PA were associated with a lower MetS risk ( OR 0.7, 95% CI 0.6-0.9, P < 0.001; OR 0.8, 95% CI 0.7-0.9, P < 0.001, respectively). For the joint effects, compared with those reporting the lowest level of total leisure ST (< 14 h/w) and the most active tertile of MVPA (≥ 61.0 MET-h/w), participants reporting the most total leisure ST (≥ 35 h/w) and the lowest level of MVPA (0 MET-h/w) had the highest odds of MetS ( OR 2.0; 95% CI 1.4-2.7). Except for people reporting ST (14-21 h/w) within the most active tertile of MVPA, the associations in all other groups were significant. With the increase of TV time and decreased MVPA, the odds of MetS almost showed a curve acceleration. CONCLUSIONS MVPA and total PA have independent preventive effects, and sedentary behavior (mainly watching TV) has an unsafe effect on MetS and its components. Strengthening the participation of MVPA and combining the LPA to replace the TV-based ST to increase the total PA may be necessary to reduce the prevalence of MetS in Chinese adults.

Abstract
Background Lipid accumulation product (LAP), a product of waist circumference (WC) and fasting triglycerides (TG), is a measure of lipid accumulation and an effective predictor of metabolic syndrome. This study aimed to evaluate the associations of LAP and its longitudinal transitions with type 2 diabetes mellitus (T2DM) among middle-aged and older Chinese. Methods Data were extracted from the China Health and Retirement Longitudinal Study (2011, 2013, 2015, and 2018). LAP was defined as (WC-65) ×TG for men, and (WC-58) ×TG for women. Participants were classified into high- and low-LAP groups at baseline, and subsequently into four transition patterns during 2011-2015: maintained-high, maintained-low, high-to-low, and low-to-high LAP. The longitudinal transition patterns of LAP on the development of T2DM were assessed by multivariable Cox frailty models. Results Overall, 7397 participants were included for analysis, among whom 849 (11.5%) developed T2DM between 2011 and 2018. Women with high-LAP levels at baseline presented a higher risk of T2DM (hazard ratios [HR]=1.37, 95% confidence interval [CI]: 1.07-1.77), while no significant association was found in men. Compared with women with maintained-low LAP pattern, those with transition patterns of low-to-high LAP and maintained-high LAP were at higher risk of T2DM (HR =1.99 and 1.98, both P<0.05); however, for men, the significantly positive association was only observed in maintained-high LAP transition pattern (HR=1.53, 95% CI: 1.04-2.23). Conclusions Elevated LAP levels and the transition patterns of maintained-high LAP and low-to-high LAP are significant risk factors for T2DM in women. Preventions are needed to combat T2DM at an early dyslipidemic stage.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Metabolic syndrome is a major public health challenge in both developed and developing countries. The burden of this disease is high, even in patients with psychiatric disorders. However, very little is known about the association between metabolic syndrome and psychiatric illness in Ethiopia. Therefore, the aim of this study was to investigate the magnitude of metabolic syndrome and its components among psychiatric clients. METHODS A comparative cross-sectional study was undertaken between psychiatric patients and age-and sex-matched non-psychiatric controls at the Dilchora referral hospital. The study included 192 study participants (96 psychiatric patients and 96 non- psychiatric controls from general medical and surgical patients). The National Cholesterol Education Program: Adult Treatment Panel III criteria were used to diagnose metabolic syndromes. The data were cleaned and analyzed using the Statistical Package for Social Sciences, Version 21. All intergroup comparisons for continuous data were performed using an independent sample t-test, whereas categorical data were analyzed using the Chi-square test. Logistic regression analysis was used to identify the association between metabolic syndrome and the associated variables. RESULTS The magnitude of metabolic syndrome among psychiatric patients was 36.5% (95%CI: 27.6, 47.4) compared to non-psychiatric control patients, 21.9% (95%CI: 13.5, 30.3), p = 0.02. The prevalence of MetS components, such as waist circumference (25.0% vs. 14.3%), lower-high density lipoprotein level (35.4% vs. 20.8%), higher systolic blood pressure (41.7% vs. 29.2%) and higher fasting blood glucose (40.6% vs. 18.8%) showed statistically significant differences between the exposed and non-exposed groups. Age greater than 50 years (AOR: 2.8, CI: 1.14, 20.0, p < 0.05); being female (AOR: 7.4, CI: 2.0, 27.6, p < 0.05), being urban residence (AOR: 6.4, CI: 2.2, 20.6, p < 0.05), ever alcohol intake (AOR: 5.3, CI: 1.3, 21.2), being physically inactive (AOR: 3.52, CI: 1.1, 12.9, p < 0.05) and family history of hypertension (AOR: 2.52, CI: 1.1, 12.2, p < 0.05) were independent predictors of metabolic syndrome (p < 0.05). CONCLUSIONS There is a high burden of metabolic syndrome and its components in patients with severe psychiatric disorders. Therefore, screening and mitigation strategies for metabolic syndrome and their components should be implemented in the management of psychiatric disorders.

Abstract
Background Few studies have reported the prevalence of metabolic syndrome (MS) and examined relationships between socioeconomic status and MS in rural China. This study aimed to evaluate the prevalence of MS and MS components as well as their associations with socioeconomic status among rural Chinese adults. Methods A cross-sectional study of 26,836 participants aged 20 years and older was conducted from June to December 2012 in Yuhuan City, Zhejiang Province, China, which is located on Yuhuan Island. A multivariable logistic regression model was used to identify risk factors for MS and their possible interactions. Results Among 26,836 subjects with an average age of 53.4 ± 14.0 years, 59% were female. The overall prevalence of MS was 20.5%, and there was a significant sex difference in the prevalence (15.1% for males vs. 24.2% for females, P < 0.001). Compared with males, females also showed a significantly higher proportion of most MS components. A significantly higher prevalence of MS was found among subjects who were elderly, had a lower income level, had a lower level of education, or were unemployed. Multiple significant interactions were observed between the prevalence of MS and sex, age or socioeconomic status (P < 0.001). The risk of MS increased significantly with age in females but not in males. Additionally, a lower income level and a lower level of education were significantly related to an increased risk only in females, and unemployed males had a higher risk of MS than unemployed females. Conclusions The prevalence of MS and its components was relatively high in a rural island Chinese population with rapid urbanization, and sex-specific associations between socioeconomic factors and MS were found. Targeted preventive interventions should be developed and implemented to prevent and control MS among those with low socioeconomic status, especially females. Abstract
Introduction Approximately 25% of the adult population worldwide and 49.8% of Mexican adults have metabolic syndrome. Metabolic syndrome is the result of unhealthy dietary and sleeping patterns, sedentary behaviors, and physical inactivity. The objective of our study was to evaluate the association between sedentary behaviors as screen-based sedentary time (SBST) and each component of metabolic syndrome among adults who participated in the Mexico National Survey of Health and Nutrition Mid-way 2016. Methods We analyzed sociodemographic, clinical, and physical activity data from 3,166 adults aged 20 years or older. The International Physical Activity Questionnaire was used to evaluate sedentary behavior. SBST was obtained by counting minutes per week spent watching television, playing video games, and interacting with computers and smartphones. We used Poisson regression to estimate the prevalence ratio of time in front of screens as a continuous variable and its association with metabolic syndrome. Results The mean (SD) hours per day of SBST in men was 3.6 (0.4) and in women was 2.8 (0.2). The prevalence of metabolic syndrome was 59.6%. In men, the risk for metabolic syndrome increased 4% (P < .05) for each hour of SBST. Similarly, for each hour of SBST, the risk of abdominal obesity increased by 4% (P < .01). In women, we observed that the risk of hypertension or high-density lipoprotein cholesterol deficiency increased for each hour of SBST, and the risk of abdominal obesity increased for each hour of SBST in those who were inactive. Conclusion Sedentary behavior based on screen time is associated with metabolic syndrome and its components among Mexicans, depending on hours of sleep. Current public health policies should consider strategies for reducing SBST.

Association of the Reproductive Period with Decreased Estimated Glomerular Filtration Rate in Menopausal Women: A Study from the Shanghai Suburban Adult Cohort and Biobank (2016-2020). Abstract
In previous studies, it has been documented that a short reproductive period is associated with a higher risk of diabetes, cardiovascular disease, and chronic kidney disease. This study aims to investigate the association of the reproductive period length with decreased renal function. This study obtained data from “the Shanghai Suburban Adult Cohort and Biobank”. An estimated glomerular filtration rate (eGFR) below 60 mL/min/1.73 m2 indicated decreased renal function during follow-up. Participants were grouped into quintiles by reproductive period. Logistic regression analysis was performed to examine the association between the reproductive period and decreased renal function. A total of 5503 menopausal women with baseline eGFR > 60 mL/min/1.73 m2 were included. Age, eGFR, and metabolic equivalent of task (MET) at baseline were 61.0 (range, 36.0–74.0) years, 92.2 (range, 60.1–194.5) mL/min/1.73 m2, and 1386 (range, 160–6678), respectively. A reproductive period of 37–45 years was associated with a lower risk of decreased eGFR (OR: 0.59, 95% CI: 0.35–1.00, p = 0.049) after adjusting for confounding variables. METs decreased the risk of decreased eGFR in women with a reproductive period of 37–45 years (OR: 0.43, 95% CI: 0.23–0.81, p = 0.010). Women with a longer reproductive period have a lower risk of decreased renal function. METs had an opposite influence on renal function in women with longer (decreased risk) or shorter (increased risk) reproductive periods.

Abstract
Background In Mongolia, where there is a large regional gap in the quality of healthcare services, metabolic syndrome (MetS) is steadily increasing. However, there are few studies on the risk level of MetS and affecting factors among adults living in rural Mongolia. This study aims to explore the relationship between socio-demographics, clinical characteristics, emotional state, and social support on the risk level of MetS prevalence among adults living in rural Mongolia. Methods In this cross-sectional study, 143 adults living in the soum area of Dondgovi aimag in Mongolia were recruited. Data collection was conducted from July 2 to 3, 2019. The self-reported questionnaires including socio-demographic, clinical characteristics and emotional status, anthropometric tests using the InBody, and blood sampling tests were conducted. The number of individual diagnostic criteria met was scored as a MetS risk score and classified into 6 groups, from the lowest score of 0 to the highest score of 5. The ordinal logistic regression analysis was used to identify the factors affecting the risk of MetS. Results The prevalence of MetS among adults living in rural Mongolia was 58.0%, and the mean MetS risk score was 2.70±1.34 points. In the ordinal logistic regression analysis, age, regular exercise of moderate intensity or higher, InBody score reflecting obesity or sarcopenia, and depression level were statistically significantly associated with the risk score for MetS. Conclusions Our study demonstrated that MetS risk levels among adults living in rural Mongolia with limited medical resources were strongly associated with demographic characteristics, body composition and emotional health condition, particularly depression.

Abstract
Objective: Epidemiological studies have reported inconsistent findings for the association between sleep duration and metabolic syndrome. We aimed to clarify the effects of short and long sleep durations on metabolic syndrome in adults by performing a meta-analysis. Methods: Adopting random-effects models, this study analyzed the effects of short and long sleep durations based on data from prospective cohort studies and cross-sectional studies retrieved from four electronic databases from inception to May 2020. Results: We collected data from 235,895 participants included in nine prospective cohort studies and 340,492 participants included in 27 cross-sectional studies. In cohort studies, short sleep duration was associated with an increased risk of metabolic syndrome (RR, 1.15; 95% CI, 1.05-1.25, I 2 = 63.1%, P < 0.001) compared with normal sleep duration. While long sleep duration was not associated with new-onset metabolic syndrome (RR, 1.02, 0.85-1.18, I 2 = 38.0%, P = 0.491). In cross-sectional studies, both short (OR, 1.06, 95% CI, 1.01-1.11, I 2 = 66.5%, P < 0.001) and long (OR, 1.11, 95% CI, 1.04-1.17, I 2 = 73.8%, P < 0.001) sleep durations were associated with a high prevalence of metabolic syndrome. Conclusions: Only a short sleep duration was associated with an increased risk of metabolic syndrome. Future studies should address whether the association is casual and modifiable.

Abstract
Because of economic reform, dietary pattern in China changed rapidly during the past two decades. Meanwhile, the changes of income and nutrients intake had the same trend. This study aims to measure the income-related inequality in daily nutrients intake and its health-related income mobility over time. Data was sourced from four waves of China Health and Nutrition Survey. Concentration indexes and health-related income mobility indexes were employed to measure the income-related inequality of nutrients intake and its change over time. This study found that the daily protein intake, daily fat intake, daily energy intake, and proportion of energy from fat over 30% were more concentrated on the rich, whereas daily carbohydrates intake among the poor. The income-related inequalities were more severe than the cross-sectional perspective in the long run. The dynamic change of urbanisation indexes has resulted that over 30% of energy from fat was more concentrated among the rich and carbohydrates intake among the poor. The nutrition transition may bring about more severe disease economic burden to the poor in the future. This study recommends an approach to minimize gaps between rural and city areas by promoting rural revitalization to reduce the income-related inequality in daily nutrient intake.

Abstract
Purpose The association between objectively measured sedentary behavior and physical activity with metabolic syndrome (MetS) has been rarely investigated in Saudi Arabia. The purpose of the current study was to examine the association of objectively measured sedentary, light physical activity (LPA), and moderate-vigorous physical activity (MVPA) with MetS among Saudi adult males. Materials and Methods The study participants were 103 males from Riyadh, Saudi Arabia (mean age = 54.9 ± 10.6 years). Metabolic syndrome was defined based on having three or more of cardiometabolic risk factors. Triaxial accelerometers were used to measure the time spent on sedentary and physical activities across 7 days. A minimum four days with ≥10 hours of wearing time per day were considered a valid data. Binary logistics regression models were performed to examine the association of sedentary and physical activity levels with MetS vs no MetS. Model 1 was unadjusted, models 2, 3, and 4 were mutually controlled for sedentary, light, and MVPA intensities. Results About 38% of males in the present study were classified as having MetS as demonstrated by a significant (p<0.05) decrease in high-density lipoprotein cholesterol (HDL-C) and a significant (p<0.05) increase in body weight, body mass index (BMI), waist circumference (WC), systolic blood pressure, glucose, and triglycerides compared to those without MetS. In addition, low levels of LPA (less than 6.3 hours per day) were significantly associated with the risk of having MetS, independent of sedentary and MVPA (odds ratio (OR) 4.26-6.96). The results showed that the associations between sedentary tertiles and MetS were not statistically significant. Levels of MVPA were also not significantly associated with an increased risk of developing MetS in all models. Conclusion This study showed that low levels of LPA were significantly associated with the risk of having MetS in Saudi males from Riyadh city, independent of MVPA and sedentary time. The results suggest that future intervention studies should assess the positive effect of increasing levels of LPA in reducing the risk of developing MetS in males.

Abstract
Background In clinical practice, it is difficult to convey the benefits of sustained physical activity to adult patients with excess weight or obesity. For this purpose, a goal-setting walking prescription may be an effective strategy. Objective This study aimed to determine the efficacy of the intervention of a pedometer app in setting a goal to reach 10,000 steps per day in adults. Methods Overweight adults (n=98; mean body mass index 32.53 [SD 4.92] kg/m2) were randomized to one of two conditions (control or intervention). Both groups downloaded a pedometer app that recorded their daily step counts and were given a daily walking goal of 10,000 steps. Subjects participated in a 24-week in-person behavioral weight control program and were asked to monitor their daily levels using the pedometer app. Baseline data were recorded and followed up weekly. Only the intervention group had structured information delivery, a personalized physical activity prescription, and follow-up on number of steps per day. Results The results show that regardless of sex or age, prescribing walking increased the number of steps per day by 4806 step on average (standardized β coefficient=–0.813, SE=427.586, t=–11.242, P<.001). Conclusions These results could have implications for improving self-monitoring in overweight adults during periods of weight loss. Health professionals should analyze the implementation of tools that permit them to prescribe, follow up, and encourage the achievement of a goal of physical activity in overweight or obese patients. Abstract
Background: The negative effects of sedentary behavior (SB) on public health have been extensively documented. A large number of studies have demonstrated that high prevalence of SB is a critical factor of all-cause mortality. Globally, the frequency of SB research has continued to rise, but little is known about SB in the Chinese population. Therefore, this review was conducted to scope the research situation and to fill the gaps related to the effects of SB in the Chinese population. Methods: Using a scoping review based on York methodology, a comprehensive search of published journal articles and grey literature was carried out through 12 databases. The literature research was conducted by two authors in July 2019, and included journal articles that targeted on the Chinese population were published between 1999 and 2019. The two authors screened the records independently and included those research topics related to SB in the Chinese population. Results: The number of included studies increased from 1 to 29 per year during the analyzed period, during which, a remarkable climb happened from 8 in 2013 to 19 in July 2019. Out of the 1303 screened studies, a total of 162 studies (81 English and 81 Chinese journal articles) met the inclusion criteria in this review. Most of the included studies (66.0%) reported the overall estimated prevalence of SB, in which, 43.2% of studies reported the average time of SB, and 40.0% of studies reported the cutoff point of SB. Besides this, 54.9% and 23.5% of studies focused on the outcomes and correlates/determinants of SB, and the proportions of studies based on testing the validation of measurement tools and on interventions were 3.7% and 4.9%, respectively. Nearly all of the reviewed articles used data from cross-sectional studies (75.9%) and longitudinal studies (13.6%), while intervention trials are less developed. The majority of the studies (64.8%) used self-reported surveys, and only 3.7% studies used device-based measurement tools. Furthermore, 35.8% of the included studies were focused on children and adolescents, while only a few studies investigated infants/toddlers and older adults. Both female and male were examined in most studies, and non-clinical populations were investigated in the context of SB in a relatively large number of studies. Conclusions: The number of research articles on SB in the Chinese population published per year has increased year by year, indicating a growing interest in this research area. More studies using population subgroup samples are needed, particularly among infants/toddlers, older adults, and clinical populations. To provide stronger evidence of the determinants and outcomes of SB, longitudinal studies using device-based measures of SB are required.

Abstract
PURPOSE Metabolic syndrome (MetS) is a major public health problem related to increased risks of cardiovascular disease and type 2 diabetes. We investigated whether recommended levels of leisure time physical activity (LTPA) decrease the risk of MetS in a community-based prospective cohort study (Ansung and Ansan cohort). MATERIALS AND METHODS A total of 3910 adults (1890 men, 2020 women) without MetS examined in 2001-2002 (baseline) were included in this study and followed up from 2013 to 2014. We measured LTPA energy expenditure using the standard metabolic equivalent value [metabolic equivalent of task (MET)-h/wk]. Individuals were categorized into five groups (physically inactive, 0.1 to <7.5, 7.5 to <15.0, 15.0 to <22.5, 22.5 to <40.0, and ≥40.0 MET-h/wk). RESULTS The mean follow-up period was 11.8 years. Among the cohort, 482 men (25.5%) and 541 women (26.8%) were diagnosed with newly developed MetS. Multivariate logistic analysis revealed a 4.4% lower MetS risk among those performing two to three times the recommended minimum of 7.5 MET-h/wk [multivariate relative risk (RR), 0.956; 95% confidence interval (CI), 0.654-1.398] and a 21.9% lower risk among those performing three to four times the physical activity minimum (multivariate RR, 0.781; 95% CI, 0.574-1.063). This association was only significant in females performing three to four times the minimum (crude RR, 0.655; 95% CI, 0.432-0.994). CONCLUSION We noted that physical activity at more than 2 times the recommended minimum prevents MetS. Healthcare professionals should encourage inactive adults to be physically active during their leisure time to take advantage of its health benefits.

BACKGROUND Lifestyle behaviours such as physical activity, sedentary behaviour and dietary habits have been shown to influence blood lipid levels, and both lifestyle and blood lipids may be associated with haemolysis during storage of blood products. We aimed to investigate whether lifestyle behaviours are associated with degree of haemolysis in red cell concentrates (RCC), and if such associations are mediated by low-density lipoprotein (LDL) cholesterol and triglyceride levels. MATERIALS AND METHODS Cross-sectional analyses were performed in data from 760 Dutch blood donors participating in Donor InSight, an observational cohort study. Linear regression analyses were conducted to assess associations of lifestyle behaviours with haemolysis levels in RCC 28 days after blood sampling. Lifestyle behaviours included moderate-to-vigorous physical activity and sedentary behaviour measured by accelerometry, and self-reported intake of a selection of foods potentially related to blood lipids, i.e. consumption of eggs, meat, nuts and fish. Potential mediating roles of both LDL cholesterol and triglyceride levels were investigated separately. All analyses were adjusted for relevant confounders. RESULTS No statistically significant nor substantial associations of any of the lifestyle behaviours with haemolysis in RCC were found, nor were there any associations between lifestyle behaviours and blood lipids. We did find consistent positive associations of LDL cholesterol and triglyceride levels with haemolysis in RCC during storage. DISCUSSION In this large cohort, blood lipid levels were consistently associated with haemolysis in RCC. Nonetheless, there was no evidence for an association between lifestyle behaviours and haemolysis in RCC, or for mediating effects by blood lipid levels.

Abstract
The objective of the study was to determine the lifestyle and quality of life in type 2 diabetes mellitus and metabolic syndrome patients in the city of Popayán. A descriptive cross-sectional study was carried out with 81 patients with metabolic syndrome and type 2 diabetes mellitus diagnoses. EUROQOL questionnaires of 5 Dimensions-3 Levels were applied, as well as the IMEVID test, in order to evaluate the quality of life and lifestyle of each group of patients. Anthropometric measures were also taken, such as Body Mass Index, Waist-Hip Ratio and skinfolds. Regarding the results, 33.33% of the participants were between 61 and 70 years of age 56.8% presented moderate pain problems/discomfort, 61.7% presented an unhealthy lifestyle and obtained variable relationships such as: waist-hip ratio - glycemia (p = 0.021, r = -0.257), body density - triglycerides (p = 0.018, r = 0.263), age and mobility EUROQOL (p = 0.001, r = 0.350). In conclusion, lifestyle changes are one of the pillars to control metabolic syndrome and type 2 diabetes mellitus. Evaluating the quality of life also makes it possible to understand how compromised patients’ abilities are, in order to create relevant strategies and actions that seek their well-being.

Abstract
Background/Objectives Regular exercise training is effective to altering many markers of metabolic syndrome and its effects are strongly influenced by the type of consumed diet. Nowadays, resistance training (RT) has been frequently associated with low-carbohydrate high-fat diet (LCD). After long term these diets causes body weight (BW) regain with deleterious effects on body composition and metabolic risk factors. The effects of RT associated with long-term LCD on these parameters remain unexplored. We aimed to investigate the effects of RT when associated with long-term LCD on BW, feed efficiency, body composition, glucose homeostasis, liver parameters and serum biochemical parameters during BW regain period in rats. Subjects/Methods Male Sprague–Dawley rats were fed with LCD (LC groups) or standard diet (STD) (ST groups). After 10 weeks-diet animals were separated into sedentary (Sed-LC and Sed-ST) and resistance-trained (RT-LC and RT-ST) groups (N = 8/group). RT groups performed an 11-week climbing program on a ladder with progressive load. Dual x-ray absorptiometry, glucose tolerance tests and insulin tolerance tests were performed at weeks 10 and 20. Liver and serum were collected at week 21. Results RT reduced feed efficiency, BW gain, liver fat and total and LDL cholesterol, and improved body composition and glucose clearance in animals fed on STD. In those fed with LCD, RT reduced caloric intake, BW regain, liver fat and serum triglycerides levels. However, improvement in body composition was inhibited and bone mineral density and glucose clearance was further impaired in this association. Conclusions The LCD nullifies the beneficial effects of RT on body composition, glucose homeostasis and impairs some health parameters. Our results do not support the association of RT with LCD in a long term period.

Abstract
Background The aim of this study was to assess the possible relationship between sitting time and physical activity and the risk of occurrence of metabolic syndrome and its components. Analyses were conducted in the whole sample, and with stratification according to BMI. We have formulated a hypothesis that individuals with different BMIs have different responses to metabolic health modifiers such as physical activity and sitting time. Material/Methods Altogether, the data from 10 367 participants from urban and rural areas, aged 37–66 years were used in the study (7479 of whom were overweight or obese). The definition of metabolic syndrome devised by the IDF Joint Interim Statement criteria using an ethnic-specific cut-off point for waist circumference as the central obesity criterion was used. Results In all analyzed BMI groups, longer sitting time was only associated with abdominal obesity (all p for trend <0.05). In participants declaring low physical activity levels, the risk of metabolic syndrome and abnormal triglycerides concentration was higher compared to those declaring high physical activity, regardless of BMI (all p for trend <0.05). In the group with overweight or obesity, low physical activity was associated with a higher risk of abdominal obesity (p for trend <0.05), increased glucose concentration (p for trend <0.05), and elevated blood pressure (p for trend <0.05). In participants with a normal BMI, these associations did not occur. Conclusions Our data suggest that physical activity helps preventive metabolic syndrome and its abnormal components, especially in participants who are overweight or obese.

Abstract
Background Metabolic syndrome is a major risk factor for cardiovascular disease. Clustering of a combination of individual factors that increase the actual rather than the expected prevalence might be helpful in understanding the pathophysiology of metabolic syndrome. The aim of this study was to analyze the most influential factors for metabolic syndrome to assess clustering factors of metabolic syndrome. Methods Subjects from the Korea National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey (KNHANES) VI were included in the present study. The status of health behaviors was obtained using the questionnaires included in the KNHANES VI. A complex, stratified, and multistage sampling design was used to analyze the data according to statistics from the Korea Centers for Disease Control and Prevention. Results A total of 2,101 men and 2,831 women aged older than 20 years were included in this study. In men, drinking alcohol more than twice per week was related with the prevalence of metabolic syndrome; while, in women, exercise was related with the prevalence of metabolic syndrome. The clustering effect was observed for more than three metabolic factors. In men, the clustering effect was strongest for the combination of hypertension, hyperglycemia, and hypertriglyceridemia. In women, the strongest clustering effect was observed for the combination of abdominal obesity, hypertriglyceridemia, and low high-density lipoprotein cholesterol concentration. Conclusion The health behaviors affecting metabolic syndrome in men and women included drinking alcohol more than twice a week and exercising more than four times a week, respectively; in addition, hypertriglyceridemia most significantly influenced the clustering effect of metabolic syndrome.

Abstract
Tributyltin (TBT), a proven environmental obesogen, functions as a nanomolar agonist of the peroxisome proliferator activated receptor-γ (PPARγ). However, the adverse effects of TBT on metabolism are incompletely understood. In this study, male ICR mice were administered TBT (5 and 50 μg·kg-1 ) by an intraperitoneal injection once every 3 days for 30 days from 28 days of age and bred for another 30 days after the last administration of TBT. We analyzed the effects of these exposures on the fat depot weights, serum lipid profile, serum leptin and adiponectin, hepatic lipid accumulation, and activity of AKT in the liver and skeletal muscle isolated from mice 8 mins after receiving an insulin injection. Pubertal exposure to TBTCl resulted in a higher body weight, increased epididymal and liver fat accumulation, hyperlipidemia, an elevated low-density lipoprotein/high-density lipoprotein ratio, serum adiponectin deficiency, worse glucose tolerance, and lower insulin-dependent AKT phosphorylation in the liver and muscle in mice. These results showed that TBT exposure induced peripheral insulin resistance and metabolic syndrome in mice.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Unbalanced dietary intake and insufficient physical activity (PA) have been recognized as risk factors for metabolic syndrome (MetS). We aimed to examine the independent and combined effects of fruit and vegetables (FV) intake and PA on MetS. METHODS AND FINDINGS A cross-sectional survey was conducted among residents of China in 2009, with fasting blood samples collected. Participants were divided into sufficient/insufficient FV intake and adequate/ inadequate PA groups according to self-reported questionnaires. MetS was defined using the NCEP-ATPIII criteria. The difference of individual MetS components was compared across different PA or FV groups. Multivariable logistic regression was used to assess association between FV/PA and the risk of MetS. A total of 7424 adults were included in the current study. MetS was prevalent in 28.7% of participants, with 24.7% and 32.9% in male and female, respectively. Compared with those with inadequate PA and insufficient FV intake, participants with the combination of adequate PA and sufficient FV intake had the lowest risk of MetS (OR = 0.69,95%CI: 0.59-0.82), following by the group with adequate PA time but insufficient FV intake (OR = 0.74, 95%CI:0.65-0.83). CONCLUSION Findings of the current study show that the combination of sufficient FV intake and adequate PA was significantly associated with reduced MetS risk among adult residents of China.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Over the long term, unhealthy lifestyles can lead to many health problems, especially type 2 diabetes (T2D). The aim of the present study was to determine associations between lifestyle factors (smoking, alcohol consumption, physical activity, and diet) and T2D in American adults (aged ≥20 years) in a nationally representative sample. METHODS Data for 12 987 American adults participating in the National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey 2005-2014 were evaluated. Weighted multiple logistic regression models were used to examine associations between the four lifestyle factors and T2D after adjusting for demographics and socioeconomic status (SES). Prevalence trends for T2D were examined using Cochran-Armitage tests. RESULTS There was a significant increasing prevalence trend for T2D among American adults. Smokers and individuals consuming >12 alcoholic drinks in the past year were less likely to report having T2D than non-smokers (odds ratio [OR] 0.41; 95% confidence interval [CI] 0.35-0.48) and those consuming <12 alcoholic drinks (OR 0.46; 95% CI 0.39-0.55). Participants with light physical activity have a greater likelihood of having T2D than those engaging in vigorous physical activity (OR 5.72; 95% CI 4.30-7.60). Individuals consuming a poor diet were more likely to report having T2D than those eating an excellent diet (OR 1.18; 95% CI 1.02-1.41). All these relationships remained significant after adjustment for demographics and SES. CONCLUSION All four lifestyle factors were significantly associated with T2D among American adults. The findings of the present study provide useful information for healthcare providers that may help them promote specific lifestyle modifications.

Abstract
BACKGROUND This study aims to assess the joint association of screen time (ST) and physical activity (PA) with anthropometric indices among Iranian children and adolescents. METHODS In this national study, 23,183 school students, aged 6-18 years, were studied. By using a multi-stage cluster sampling method, they were selected from rural and urban areas of 30 provinces of Iran. ST and PA were assessed by self-administered validated questionnaires. Height, weight, hip and waist circumferences (WC) were measured according to standard protocols, and body mass index (BMI) was calculated. ST of <2 h per day was categorized as "low" and ≥2 h per day as "high". PA levels were obtained by a 7-day recall of sports or activities that made participants sweat or make their legs feel tired, or games that made them breathe heavily. Using this questionnaire, the score of 1-1.9 was categorized as "low" and scores between 2 and 5 as "high" PA. Logistic regression analyses were used to evaluate the joint association of PA and ST categories with odds of anthropometric measures. RESULTS In both genders, those students categorized as "Low PA & High ST" had the highest levels of BMI z-scores (boys: 0.15±1.12, girls: 0.17±1.08), WC (boys: 69.93±13.89 cm, girls: 67.30±11.26 cm), and hip circumference (boys: 82.41±13.90 cm, girls: 84.05±13.7 cm), as well as the highest prevalence of overweight (boys: 15.32%, girls: 14.04%) (p<0.001 in all comparisons). In linear multivariate model, students with "High PA & High ST" had significant increased levels of z-scores for BMI, WC and hip circumference (p<0.05). CONCLUSIONS The current findings underscore the importance of reducing ST along with increasing PA for prevention and control of excess weight in children and adolescents.

Abstract
OBJECTIVES Several lifestyle parameters including diet, physical activity and sleep were associated in isolation with the presence of Metabolic Syndrome (MetS) in adults, to date there is a paucity of studies which evaluated their combined role aging populations and especially with respect to gender. Therefore, the aim of the present study was to provide a global consideration of the lifestyle factors associated with MetS among elderly individuals. DESIGN Cross-sectional observational study. SETTING 21 Mediterranean islands and the rural Mani region (Peloponnesus) of Greece. PARTICIPANTS during 2005-2015, 2749 older (aged 65-100 years) from were voluntarily enrolled in the study. MEASUREMENTS Dietary habits, energy intake, physical activity status, socio-demographic characteristics, lifestyle parameters (sleeping and smoking habits) and clinical profile aspects were derived through standard procedures. The presence of MetS was defined using the definition provided by NCEP ATP III (revised) and cluster analysis was used to identify overall dietary habit patterns. RESULTS The overall prevalence of MetS in the study sample was 36.2%, but occurred more frequently in females (40.0% vs. 31.8%, respectively, p=0.03). Individuals with MetS were more likely to sleep during the day (89.4% vs. 76.8% respectively, p=0.039) and frequent 'siesta' was positively linked to the odds of MetS presence in females (Odds Ratio (OR) =3.43, 95% Confidence Intervals (CI): 1.08-10.9), but not for men (p=0.999). The lower carbohydrate (i.e., 45.2% of total daily energy, 120±16gr/day) dietary cluster was inversely associated with the odds for MetS presence, but only for men (OR=0.094, 95%CI: 0.010-0.883). CONCLUSIONS Lifestyle parameters including sleep and diet quality are strongly associated with the presence of MetS in elderly cohort, but different their level of influence appears to be different, depending on gender. Further research is needed to better consider the role of lifestyle characteristics in the management of MetS in clinical practice.
