Abstract
BACKGROUND The SYNTAX score is a score that grades the severity and complexity of coronary lesions. In this study, we aimed to investigate the relationship between triglyceride/high-density lipoprotein cholesterol (triglyceride/HDL-C) ratio and SYNTAX scores in patients presenting with non-ST elevation myocardial infarction (NSTEMI). METHODS This prospective study included 258 patients who presented at our center with STEMI, and underwent coronary angiography (CAG). The triglyceride/HDL-C ratio was calculated, and the relationship of this ratio with the SYNTAX score was determined with univariate and multivariate linear regression analyses. RESULTS The patients were separated into two groups according to the triglyceride/HDL-C ratios as low (<3.88) and high (≥3.88). The SYNTAX scores of the group with a high triglyceride/HDL-C score were determined to be significantly high ( P < 0.001). When the SYNTAX scores were separated into two groups as low (≤22) and high (>23), a statistically significant correlation was determined between a high SYNTAX score and a high triglyceride/HDL-C ratio ( P < 0.001). Logistic regression analysis was performed for the SYNTAX score, and the BMI value [odds ratio (OR) = 0.91, 95% confidence interval (CI): 0.85-0.98] and the triglyceride/HDL-C ratio (OR = 6.86, 95% CI: 3.45-13.65) alone were determined to be independent determinants of the SYNTAX score. CONCLUSION The most important result obtained from this study was that the triglyceride/HDL-C ratio, which is an index that has recently started to be frequently used, was a marker of greater coronary anatomic complexity (SYNTAX score >22), independently of other parameters in patients who presented with NSTEMI and underwent CAG.

Abstract
Background This study aimed to determine the correlation of plasma asprosin with anthropometric and metabolic parameters in Korean children and adolescents. Methods This single-center study included 109 Korean children and adolescents: 62 (56.9%) obese participants with a body mass index (BMI) ≥95th percentile and 47 (43.1%) healthy controls with BMI between the 15th and 85th percentile. Metabolic parameters were measured, including fasting blood glucose, fasting insulin, homeostasis model assessment of insulin resistance (HOMA-IR), triglyceride and glucose (TyG) index, and lipid profiles. Results Plasma asprosin levels were higher in the obese group than in the control group (mean 87.0 vs. 69.3 ng/mL; p = 0.001) and in the IR group than in the non-IR group (mean 98.6 vs. 70.2 ng/mL; p < 0.001). Plasma asprosin levels were not associated with sex or pubertal stage. Plasma asprosin levels were positively correlated with BMI SDS (r = 0.34; p = 0.002), glycated hemoglobin (HbA1c) (r = 0.25; p = 0.02), glucose (r = 0.33; p = 0.002), insulin (r = 0.44; p < 0.001), HOMA-IR (r = 0.47; p < 0.001), triglyceride (TG) (r = 0.33; p = 0.003), high-density lipoprotein (HDL) cholesterol (r = -0.29; p = 0.008), and TyG index (r = 0.38; p < 0.001). Multiple linear regression analysis indicated that plasma asprosin levels were independently associated with HOMA-IR (p < 0.001) and TG/HDL cholesterol ratio (p < 0.001). Conclusions This study demonstrated an association between plasma asprosin levels and obesity and insulin resistance in Korean children and adolescents.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Previous studies have found that exposure to childhood environmental stress is associated with cardiometabolic risk. However, it is not known whether individual health behaviors disrupt this relationship. This study prospectively evaluated the relationship between cumulative environmental stress in a low-income sample and cardiometabolic risk in middle childhood and examined whether child health behaviors attenuated this relationship. METHODS AND RESULTS In a cohort of children (n=338; 57% Hispanic children; 25% Black children), environmental stressors (family and neighborhood factors representing disadvantage/deprivation) and child health behaviors (accelerometry measured physical activity; parent-reported screen time and diet recalls) were measured over 5 time points beginning when children were aged 2 to 4 years and ending when they were aged 7 to 11 years. Children's cardiometabolic risk factors (body mass index, blood pressure, triglyceride/high-density lipoprotein ratio, glucose, hemoglobin A1c, C-reactive protein) were measured at 7 to 11 years. Emerging cardiometabolic risk was defined as having ≥1 elevations that exceeded clinical thresholds. In adjusted path analyses, greater cumulative environmental stress was associated with higher likelihood of emerging cardiometabolic risk in middle childhood (P<0.001). Higher levels of moderate to vigorous physical activity and fewer sedentary minutes attenuated the positive relationship between stress and cardiometabolic risk (P<0.05). Children with >2 hours of average daily screen time had a higher likelihood of elevated cardiometabolic risk (P<0.01), but screen time did not moderate the stress-cardiometabolic risk relationship. Dietary intake was not related to cardiometabolic risk. CONCLUSIONS Interventions that promote moderate to vigorous physical activity and limit sedentary behavior may have particular importance for the cardiometabolic health of children exposed to high levels of cumulative environmental stress.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Elevated lipid levels are risk factors for early atherosclerosis. Lipid ratios have emerged as potentially stronger predictors of adverse cardiovascular changes and atherogenic cholesterol. Risk stratification in youth with obesity or type 2 diabetes may be improved by using lipid ratios. We sought to determine if lipid ratios would identify abnormalities in arterial structure and stiffness in adolescents and young adults. METHODS A total of 762 youth aged 10-24 years had laboratory, anthropometric, blood pressure, and carotid intima-media thickness and arterial stiffness data collected. Subjects were stratified into tertiles (low, mid, high) of lipid ratios and non-high-density lipoprotein cholesterol (HDL-C). Vascular outcomes by tertile were assessed by analyses of variance. General linear models were constructed for each lipid value and included demographics, risk factors, and vascular measures. Correlations between lipid markers, vascular measures, and low-density lipoprotein (LDL) particle size and number were conducted. RESULTS There was a progressive increase in arterial thickness and stiffness across all three lipid ratios and non-HDL-C. The triglyceride to HDL-C (TG/HDL-C) ratio remained an independent predictor of arterial thickness and stiffness after adjusting for other cardiovascular risk factors. TG/HDL-C had the highest correlations with arterial stiffness and small, dense LDL. CONCLUSIONS Arterial stiffness is increased in youth with high lipid ratios with TG/HDL-C being the most consistent marker of vascular changes. These data suggest that identification of high TG/HDL-C in these individuals may lead to earlier intervention to prevent atherosclerotic cardiovascular disease.

Abstract
AIMS We investigated the tracking correlations between fasting plasma glucose (FPG) in adolescence with both FPG and 2-hour post-load glucose (2 h-PG) in adulthood, and identified the predictors of FPG and 2 h-PG in young adulthood using traditional risk factors during adolescence and adulthood. METHODS We included 2188 participants (1033 male) from the Tehran lipid and glucose study within the age ranges 11-18 and 19-40 years during 1999-2018. The area under the curve (AUC) was computed using the growth curve models, and predictors were identified by the linear regression model. RESULTS The partial correlation between AUCs of FPG in adolescence and adulthood was 0.37 (P < 0.001). The correlation between AUCs of FPG in adolescence and 2 h-PG in adulthood was 0.17 (P < 0.001). The AUC of FPG was a significant positive predictor for both FPG and 2 h-PG in young adulthood. Other predictors of adult FPG included sex, as well as BMI and the ratio of triglycerides to HDL-cholesterol during both adolescence and adulthood. CONCLUSIONS Tracking correlation was observed for FPG, suggesting that monitoring and managing risk factors in adolescence may have implications for future glucose metabolism in young adulthood.

Abstract
Objective Cardiovascular diseases (CVD) are the leading cause of death globally. Metabolic syndrome (MtS) is a risk factor that increases the likelihood of CVD. The atherogenic index (AIP), calculated as the logarithm of the ratio of triglycerides (TG) to high-density lipoprotein cholesterol (HDL) cholesterol in plasma, is a valuable marker for highly atherogenic small dense low-density lipoprotein cholesterol particles. This study aimed to explore MtS prevalence and investigate the potential of using the AIP as a predictor for CVD risk factors in adults from the Qassim region of Saudi Arabia. Methods The cross-sectional study enrolled 589 participants from public hospitals in nine major cities who completed a detailed questionnaire on health, diet, and lifestyle. Anthropometric measurements and some clinical parameters were measured. Results The findings indicated a significant prevalence of MtS (37.5%) among participants from the Qassim Area, which was higher in males (39.9%) than females (34.9%). Nevertheless, a significant prevalence was shown for CVD risk factors among participants, with hyperglycemia (78.1%), hypertriglyceridemia (39.0%), hypo-HDL-cholesterolemia (38.9%), and hypertension (21.6%) being common. The AIP's performance in identifying CVD risk factors showed a receiver operating characteristic value of 0.909 (P < 0.001). The optimal cutoff value for the AIP was determined to be 0.468, demonstrating high sensitivity (84.8%) and specificity (78.6%). Conclusion Incorporating AIP into clinical practice could enhance CVD risk prediction compared to using lipid profiles alone. These findings suggest that there is a high prevalence of MtS among adults in the Qassim region of Saudi Arabia. Further longitudinal studies are needed to recommend AIP as a robust tool for predicting CVD in clinical settings.

Abstract
Mendelian randomization (MR) is an effective approach for revealing causal risk factors that underpin complex traits and diseases. While MR has been more widely applied under two-sample settings, it is more promising to be used in one single large cohort given the rise of biobank-scale datasets that simultaneously contain genotype data, brain imaging data, and matched complex traits from the same individual. However, most existing multivariable MR methods have been developed for two-sample setting or a small number of exposures. In this study, we introduce a one-sample multivariable MR method based on partial least squares and Lasso regression (MR-PL). MR-PL is capable of considering the correlation among exposures (e.g., brain imaging features) when the number of exposures is extremely upscaled, while also correcting for winner's curse bias. We performed extensive and systematic simulations, and demonstrated the robustness and reliability of our method. Comprehensive simulations confirmed that MR-PL can generate more precise causal estimates with lower false positive rates than alternative approaches. Finally, we applied MR-PL to the datasets from UK Biobank to reveal the causal effects of 36 white matter tracts on 180 complex traits, and showed putative white matter tracts that are implicated in smoking, blood vascular function-related traits, and eating behaviors.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Epidemiological studies on children and adults have linked toxicants from plastics and personal care products to metabolic disruption. Yet, the impact of endocrine-disrupting chemicals (EDCs) on adolescent metabolic syndrome (MetS) risk during early and mid-adolescence is unclear. METHODS To examine the links between exposure to EDCs and MetS risk and its components, cross-sectional data from 344 Mexican youth in early-to-mid adolescence (10-17 years) were analyzed. Urinary biomarker concentrations of phthalates, phenol, and paraben analytes were measured from a single spot urine sample collected in 2015; study personnel obtained anthropometric and metabolic measures. We examined associations between summary phthalates and metabolites, phenol, and paraben analytes with MetS risk z-scores using linear regression, adjusted for specific gravity, sex, age, pubertal status, smoking, alcohol intake, physical activity level, and screen time. As a secondary aim, mediation analysis was conducted to evaluate the role of hormones in the association between summary phthalates with lipids and MetS risk z-scores. RESULTS The mean (SD) age was 13.2 (1.9) years, and 50.9% were female. Sex-stratified analyses revealed associations between summary phthalates and lipids ratio z-scores, including Σ DEHP [β = 0.21 (95% CI: 0.04, 0.37; p < 0.01)], phthalates from plastic sources (Σ Plastic) [β = 0.22 (95% CI: 0.05, 0.39; p < 0.01)], anti-androgenic phthalates (Σ AA) [β = 0.22 (95% CI: 0.05, 0.39; p < 0.01)], and individual phthalate metabolites (MEHHP, MEOHP, and MECPP) among males. Among females, BPA [β = 0.24 (95% CI: 0.03, 0.44; p < 0.05)] was positively associated with lipids ratio z-score and one phenol (2,5 DCP) [β = 0.09 (95% CI: 0.01, 0.18); p < 0.05)] was associated with increased waist circumference z-score. Results showed no evidence of mediation by hormone concentrations in the association between summary phthalates with lipids ratio or MetS risk z-scores. CONCLUSION Higher EDC exposure was positively associated with serum lipids during adolescence, particularly among males.

Abstract
Atherogenic dyslipidemia is a risk factor for cardiovascular diseases. The present study aimed to evaluate the association between triglycerides (TG), high-density lipoprotein cholesterol (HDL-C), and the triglycerides to high-density lipoprotein (TG/HDL-C) ratio with carotid-femoral pulse wave velocity (cf-PWV), a marker of vascular stiffness. Anthropometric, biochemical, and clinical data from 13,732 adults were used to assess this association. Individuals within the third TG/HDL-C tertile presented worse anthropometric, biochemical, and clinical profiles as compared with the participants in the lower TG/HDL-C tertile. There was a linear association between TG, HDL-C, and TG/HDL-C ratio and cf-PWV in both men and women (stronger in women). After adjustment for confounders, lower levels of HDL-C were associated with increased cf-PWV in men (9.63 ± .02 m/s) and women (8.90 ± .03 m/s). However, TG was not significantly associated with cf-PWV after adjustment, regardless of sex. An increased TG/HDL-C ratio is associated with higher cf-PWV only in women (9.01 ± .03 m/s), but after adjustment for HDL-C levels, the association was non-significant (8.99 ± .03 m/s). These results highlight the stronger association of HDL-C with arterial stiffness, and that the association of TG/HDL-C with cf-PWV is dependent on HDL-C.

Abstract
Context Thyroid hormones have metabolic effects such as relationship between hypothyroidism and atherosclerosis. Objective Evaluate the effects of hypothyroidism on Non-Alcoholic Fatty Liver Disease and atherosclerosis by using AIP, APRI score, FIB-4 indices. Material and Methods 1370 patients with hypothyroidism who applied to the Endocrinology and Metabolism outpatient clinic between 01.01.2017-30.12.2021 were included the study. Pregnants, patients with a history of thyroid carcinoma, cardiovascular and liver diseases were excluded. TSH, fT4, Anti TPO, Anti TG, thrombocyte, ALT, AST, HDL, Triglyceride values of the cases were analyzed and atherogenic index of plasma (AIP), AST to Platelet Ratio Index (APRI) and Fibrosis-4 (FIB-4) indices were calculated. Results 1170 (85.4%) of the cases were female.The age of those who had high risk of AIP was found to be higher than those with low and moderate risk (p=0.001; p=0.003; p<0.01). The ages of those who had low-risk FIB-4 Index were found to be lower than those with moderate risk and high risk (p=0.001; p=0.001; p<0.01). A positive relationship was detected between APRI and FIB-4 (r=0.681; p=0.001; p<0.01).AIP increased as TSH increased in hypothyroid patients. No significant correlations were detected between TSH, APRI, and the FIB-4 Index. No significant differences were detected between AIP, APRI, FIB-4, and thyroid autoantibodies. Conclusion In hypothyroid patients, the AIP index increased with age and the increase in TSH. A strong relationship was detected between AIP and TSH . For this reason, we think that keeping TSH within the normal range with regular follow-ups and treatment in patients with hypothyroidism will reduce the risk of atherosclerosis.

Abstract
Importance The in utero metabolic milieu is associated with offspring adiposity. Standard definitions of maternal obesity (according to prepregnancy body mass index [BMI]) and gestational diabetes (GDM) may not be adequate to capture subtle yet important differences in the intrauterine environment that could be involved in programming. Objectives To identify maternal metabolic subgroups during pregnancy and to examine associations of subgroup classification with adiposity traits in their children. Design, Setting, and Participants This cohort study included mother-offspring pairs in the Healthy Start prebirth cohort (enrollment: 2010-2014) recruited from University of Colorado Hospital obstetrics clinics in Aurora, Colorado. Follow-up of women and children is ongoing. Data were analyzed from March to December 2022. Exposures Metabolic subtypes of pregnant women ascertained by applying k-means clustering on 7 biomarkers and 2 biomarker indices measured at approximately 17 gestational weeks: glucose, insulin, Homeostatic Model Assessment for Insulin Resistance, total cholesterol, high-density lipoprotein cholesterol (HDL-C), triglycerides, free fatty acids (FFA), HDL-C:triglycerides ratio, and tumor necrosis factor α. Main Outcomes and Measures Offspring birthweight z score and neonatal fat mass percentage (FM%). In childhood at approximately 5 years of age, offspring BMI percentile, FM%, BMI in the 95th percentile or higher, and FM% in the 95th percentile or higher. Results A total of 1325 pregnant women (mean [SD] age, 27.8 [6.2 years]; 322 [24.3%] Hispanic, 207 non-Hispanic Black [15.6%], and 713 [53.8%] non-Hispanic White), and 727 offspring with anthropometric data measured in childhood (mean [SD] age 4.81 [0.72] years, 48% female) were included. We identified the following 5 maternal metabolic subgroups: reference (438 participants), high HDL-C (355 participants), dyslipidemic-high triglycerides (182 participants), dyslipidemic-high FFA (234 participants), and insulin resistant (IR)-hyperglycemic (116 participants). Compared with the reference subgroup, women in the IR-hyperglycemic and dyslipidemic-high FFA subgroups had offspring with 4.27% (95% CI, 1.94-6.59) and 1.96% (95% CI, 0.45-3.47) greater FM% during childhood, respectively. There was a higher risk of high FM% among offspring of the IR-hyperglycemic (relative risk, 8.7; 95% CI, 2.7-27.8) and dyslipidemic-high FFA (relative risk, 3.4; 95% CI, 1.0-11.3) subgroups; this risk was of greater magnitude compared with prepregnancy obesity alone, GDM alone, or both conditions. Conclusions and Relevance In this cohort study, an unsupervised clustering approach revealed distinct metabolic subgroups of pregnant women. These subgroups exhibited differences in risk of offspring adiposity in early childhood. Such approaches have the potential to refine understanding of the in utero metabolic milieu, with utility for capturing variation in sociocultural, anthropometric, and biochemical risk factors for offspring adiposity.

Abstract
PURPOSE OF REVIEW Cardiovascular (CV) risk factors such as dyslipidemia, hypertension, diabetes, and obesity are associated with an increased risk for CV events in adults. Noninvasive measures of vascular health are associated with these CV events and can potentially help risk stratify children with CV risk factors. The purpose of this review is to summarize recent literature regarding vascular health in children with cardiovascular risk factors. RECENT FINDINGS Adverse changes in pulse wave velocity, pulse wave analysis, arterial distensibility, and carotid intima-media thickness are seen in children with CV risk factors supporting potential utility in risk stratification. Assessing vascular health in children can be challenging due to growth-related changes in vasculature, multiple assessment modalities, and differences in normative data. Vascular health assessment in children with cardiovascular risk factors can be a valuable tool for risk stratification and help identify opportunities for early intervention. Future areas of research include increasing normative data, improving conversion of data between different modalities, and increasing longitudinal studies in children linking childhood risk factors to adult CV outcomes.

Abstract
INTRODUCTION Both the triglyceride to HDL cholesterol (TG/HDL) ratio and timing of pubertal maturation have been identified as independent contributors to the development of atherosclerosis. OBJECTIVE The purpose of our study was to determine the relationship between the TG/HDL ratio and measures of vascular health in children and adolescents with dyslipidemia stratified by somatic maturity. We hypothesized that somatic maturity would have a significant interaction with TG/HDL ratio and vascular health. METHODS This was a longitudinal analysis of 120 children and adolescents (age 8-14 years) with dyslipidemia recruited from a pediatric preventive cardiology clinic. At baseline and each follow-up visit, a non-fasting serum lipid panel was collected and vascular health (carotid artery intima--media thickness, pulse wave velocity, augmentation index) was assessed. Peak height velocity (PHV) was calculated at each visit, and participants were stratified into groups by maturity offset (pre-PHV, mid-PHV, post-PHV). A mixed model design permitted baseline and follow-up visits to be classified as discrete data points. RESULTS Of the n = 235 data points (pre-PHV = 23%, mid-PHV = 19%, and post-PHV = 58%), we identified no significant interaction between TG/HDL ratio, maturity offset, and measures of vascular structure or function. There was also no significant relationship found between TG/HDL and maturity group. Within the mid-pubertal group, there was weak relationship found between TG/HDL and augmentation index. CONCLUSION Despite the well-described relationship between early pubertal maturation and development of cardiovascular risk factors in adulthood, we found that vascular damage resulting from an elevated TG/HDL ratio is not independently associated with somatic maturity.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Celiac disease (CD) in children and adolescents has been linked with increased susceptibility for cardiometabolic disease in adulthood. We explored the interaction between body composition and metabolic syndrome (MetS) components in pediatric CD. METHODS We conducted a retrospective observational study of patients with CD followed at our Pediatric Endocrine and Gastroenterology Units between 1/2018-1/2022. Data on sociodemographic, clinical, laboratory, and body composition parameters (bioelectrical impedance analysis, BIA) were collected. RESULTS Forty-four patients with MetS components and 67 patients without them were enrolled. The cohort's mean age at BIA assessment was 11.5 ± 3.6 years. Individuals with MetS components were older (P = 0.045), had higher BMI z-scores (P < 0.001), higher total and truncal fat percentage levels (P < 0.001), lower muscle-to-fat ratio z-scores (P = 0.018), higher sarcopenic indices (P = 0.05), higher systolic blood pressure percentiles (P = 0.001), higher triglycerides levels (P = 0.009), and higher triglycerides/HDL-c ratios (P < 0.001) than those without MetS components. A sex- and age-adjusted model revealed that the diagnosis of MetS components was positively associated with fat percentage (odds ratio = 1.087, confidence interval [1.010-1.171], P = 0.027), but not with BMI z-scores (P = 0.138). CONCLUSIONS We found that fat percentage but not weight status is associated with risk for MetS components in individuals with childhood-onset CD. Preventive interventions should target an improvement in body composition. IMPACT The literature on cardiometabolic risk in pediatric patients with celiac disease (CD) is sparse. Our analysis revealed that at least one metabolic syndrome (MetS) component was present in two out of every five children and adolescents with CD. An increase in fat percentage but not in body mass index z-scores predicted the presence of MetS components in our cohort. These findings suggest that the weight status of children and adolescents with CD does not mirror their risk for MetS components. Body composition analysis should be considered as an integral part of the clinical evaluation in young patients with CD.

Abstract
Hypertension is an increasing disease in children and the risk of endothelial damage and target organ damage increases in the presence of additional risk factors such as obesity. In our study, the effect of hypertension on early atherosclerotic changes and target organ damage in children was investigated. Twenty four-hour ambulatory pulse wave analysis was performed by oscillometric method in 71 children aged 8-18 years, 17 of whom were diagnosed with primary hypertension without obesity, 18 had both primary hypertension and obesity, and 16 had renal hypertension. Twenty healthy normotensive children were included as the control group. Carotid intima-media thickness (CIMT) and Left Ventricular Mass Index were measured. Central systolic blood pressure (cSBP), central diastolic blood pressure (cDBP), systolic blood pressure (SBP) and diastolic blood pressure (DBP) were higher in the primary hypertension group compared to controls (p = 0.001, p = 0.005, p = 0.001, p = 0.009, respectively), cSBP was higher in the renal hypertension group than the control group (p = 0.018). There was no difference between the groups in terms of pulse wave analysis parameters, CIMT, or left ventricular mass index (p > 0.05). Pulse wave velocity was positively correlated with SBP, DBP, cSBP, cDBP (p < 0.001). Augmentation index was positively correlated with DBP and cDBP (p = 0.01, p = 0.002, respectively). Our findings show that high blood pressure is associated with arterial stiffness and target organ damage beginning in childhood. The detection of early atherosclerotic vascular changes using pulse wave analysis allows to take necessary precautions such as lifestyle changes to prevent target organ damage in hypertensive children.

Abstract
Non-Alcoholic fatty liver disease (NAFLD) is the leading cause of chronic liver disease in children. Epigenetic alterations, such as through DNA methylation (DNAm), may link adverse childhood exposures and fatty liver and provide non-invasive methods for identifying children at high risk for NAFLD and associated metabolic dysfunction. We investigated the association between differential DNAm and liver fat content (LFC) and liver injury in pre-adolescent children. Leveraging data from the Newborn Epigenetics Study (NEST), we enrolled 90 mother-child dyads and used linear regression to identify CpG sites and differentially methylated regions (DMRs) in peripheral blood associated with LFC and alanine aminotransferase (ALT) levels in 7-12yo children. DNAm was measured using Infinium HumanMethylationEPIC BeadChips (Illumina). LFC and fibrosis were quantified by magnetic resonance imaging proton density fat fraction and elastography. Median LFC was 1.4% (range, 0.3-13.4%) and MRE was 2.5 kPa (range, 1.5-3.6kPa). Three children had LFC ≥ 5%, while six (7.6%) met our definition of NAFLD (LFC ≥ 3.7%). All children with NAFLD were obese and five were Black. LFC was associated with 88 DMRs and 106 CpGs (FDR<5%). The top two CpGs, cg25474373 and cg07264203, mapped to or near RFTN2 and PRICKLE2 genes. These two CpG sites were also significantly associated with a NAFLD diagnosis. As higher LFC associates with an adverse cardiometabolic profile already in childhood, altered DNAm may identify these children early in disease course for targeted intervention. Larger, longitudinal studies are needed to validate these findings and determine mechanistic relevance.

Abstract
We examined the association between potato consumption in two different age periods during adolescence and risk of obesity and cardiometabolic dysfunction in White and Black girls. We used data from the biracial prospective National Growth and Health Study. Average potato consumption was derived from multiple 3-d food records in two age periods, 9-11 and 9-17 years, and included white and sweet potatoes from all sources. Multivariable logistic regression models were used to estimate OR for becoming overweight, developing prehypertension, elevated TAG levels or impaired fasting glucose (IFG) at 18-20 years of age according to the category of daily potato intake. We also stratified by cooking method (fried/non-fried) and race. ANCOVA was also used to estimate adjusted mean levels of BMI, systolic blood pressure, diastolic blood pressure, log-transformed TAG, the TAG:HDL ratio and fasting glucose levels associated with potato intake category. Higher potato consumption was associated with higher fruit and non-starchy vegetable intakes and higher Healthy Eating Index scores in Black girls. There were no statistically significant associations overall between moderate or higher (v. lower) intakes of potatoes and risks of overweight, prehypertension, elevated fasting TAG, high TAG:HDL ratio or IFG. Also, no adverse associations were found between fried or non-fried potato intake and cardiometabolic outcomes. Potato consumption has been the subject of much controversy in recent years. This study adds evidence that potato consumption among healthy girls during the critical period of adolescence was not associated with cardiometabolic risk.

Abstract
Objective We aimed to explore the association between the triglyceride-glucose (TyG) index, a marker of insulin resistance (IR), and vascular target organ damage (TOD) in a Beijing community-based population, China. Methods A total of 6,015 participants from an atherosclerosis cohort survey performed in the Shijingshan District in Beijing, China were included in our analysis. Vascular TOD, such as carotid-femoral pulse wave velocity (cfPWV), brachial-ankle pulse wave velocity (baPWV), and the urine albumin-to-creatinine ratio (UACR) were all evaluated. Results The overall mean age of all the participants was 62.35 years, 3,951 (65.69%) were female, and mean TyG index was 8.81. In univariable regression analyzes, an increased TyG index was associated with higher cfPWV, baPWV, lnUACR, and higher risk of cfPWV ≥ 10 m/s, baPWV ≥ 1,800 cm/s, and UACR ≥ 30 mg/g, respectively. Multivariable regression analyzes showed subjects with the TyG index in top tertile had a significant increase in cfPWV (β = 0.29 m/s; 95% confidence interval [95% CI] 0.19-0.40; p fortrend < 0.001), baPWV (β = 69.28 cm/s; 95% CI 50.97-87.59; p fortrend < 0.001), lnUACR (β = 0.23; 95% CI 0.13-0.34; p fortrend < 0.001), and had a higher risk of cfPWV ≥ 10 m/s (odds ratio [OR] = 1.47; 95% CI 1.17-1.85; p fortrend < 0.001), baPWV ≥ 1,800 cm/s (OR = 1.79; 95% CI 1.48-2.17; p fortrend < 0.001), and UACR ≥ 30 mg/g (OR = 1.71; 95% CI 1.30-2.24; p fortrend < 0.001) after fully adjusting for age, sex, body mass index (BMI), systolic blood pressure (SBP), diastolic blood pressure (DBP), high-density lipoprotein cholesterol (HDL-C), low-density lipoprotein cholesterol (LDL-C), estimated glomerular filtration rate (eGFR), self-reported coronary heart disease (CHD) and stroke, antihypertensive drugs, hypoglycemic drugs, and lipid-lowering drugs. Consistent conclusions were obtained in the subgroups without hypoglycemic and lipid-lowering medications or aged younger than 65 years old. Conclusions The TyG index was positively associated with artery stiffness and nephric microvascular damage in a Beijing community-based population in China. This result provides evidence that the TyG index may serve as a simple and effective indicator to reflect vascular TOD.

Abstract
Data are limited on the relationship between the cardio–ankle vascular index (CAVI) and non-insulin-based insulin resistance (IR) indices, including the triglyceride to high-density lipoprotein cholesterol ratio (TG/HDL-C), fasting triglyceride and glucose index (TyG), and metabolic score for IR (METS-IR). In this study, we explored the relationship between TG/HDL-C, TyG, METS-IR, and the risk of increased arterial stiffness (CAVI ≥ 8.0) and compared their ability to detect arterial stiffness in the non-hypertensive Chinese population. A total of 3,265 non-hypertensive subjects were included. Spearman’s and partial correlation analyses were used to assess the relationship between non-insulin-based IR indices and CAVI. The correlation between these indices and the risk of a CAVI ≥ 8.0 was explored by multiple logistic regression analysis. The area under the receiver-operating characteristic curve was used to compare the ability of TG/HDL-C, TyG, and METS-IR to detect a CAVI ≥ 8.0. After adjustment for confounding factors, linear regression analysis showed that the CAVI changed by 0.092 [95% confidence interval (CI) 0.035–0.149] per standard deviation increase in TyG. While, this linear relationship was not found when analyzing TG/HDL-C and METS-IR. Multiple logistic regression analysis showed that the proportion of patients with CAVI ≥ 8.0 in the fourth quartile of TG/HDL-C [Q4 vs. Q1: odds ratio (OR) 2.434, 95% CI 1.489–3.975], TyG (Q4 vs. Q1: OR 2.346, 95% CI 1.413–3.896), and METS-IR (Q4 vs. Q1: OR 2.699, 95% CI 1.235–5.897) was significantly higher than that in the lowest quartile. The area under the curve that could discriminate CAVI ≥ 8.0 was 0.598 (95% CI 0.567–0.629) for TG/HDL-C, 0.636 (95% CI 0.606–0.667) for TyG, and 0.581 (95% CI 0.550–0.613) for METS-IR. In this study, we demonstrated a significant association between increased arterial stiffness and non-insulin-based IR indices. Among them, TyG showed better discriminatory ability than TG/HDL-C or METS-IR.

Abstract
The relationship between alcohol consumption and cardiovascular disease risk is complex. Low-to-moderate daily alcohol consumption (1–2 drinks/day) is associated with reduced risk, whereas greater amounts of alcohol consumption and a “binge” pattern of drinking are associated with increased cardiovascular risk and mortality. Arterial stiffness may help explain the complex relationship. This integrated review summarizes data from studies examining the associations between alcohol consumption and pulse wave velocity, a gold standard measure of arterial stiffness. We also briefly review the concept and methodology of pulse wave velocity measurement as well as the mechanisms of alcohol-induced arterial stiffening. Findings among the different studies reviewed were inconsistent with methodological challenges related to alcohol use assessment. While making specific conclusions regarding this relationship is tenuous; the data suggest that excessive alcohol consumption or a binge drinking pattern is associated with increased arterial stiffness.

Abstract
Triglyceride/high-density lipoprotein (HDL) cholesterol ratio (TG/HDL-C), triglyceride-glucose index (TyG), and non-HDL cholesterol level (non-HDL-C) have been proposed as surrogate markers for predicting metabolic syndrome (MetS). This study investigated whether these lipid-derived surrogate markers can predict MetS in Korean children and adolescents. Data from 1,814 participants were analyzed from the 2013-2016 Korean National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey. MetS was defined using three sets of criteria: Cook et al. (MetS1), de Ferranti et al. (MetS2), and the International Diabetes Federation (MetS3). The prevalence of MetS1, MetS2, and MetS3 was 4.6%, 11.3%, and 2.7%, respectively. In receiver operating characteristic curve analysis of MetS and lipid-derived surrogate markers, TG/HDL-C (0.937 for MetS1, 0.894 for MetS2, and 0.897 for MetS3) had the largest area under the curve (AUC), followed by TyG (0.906 for MetS1, 0.864 for MetS2, and 0.887 for MetS3), and non-HDL-C (0.752 for MetS1, 0.708 for MetS2, and 0.703 for MetS3) (all P < 0.001). The cutoff values for detecting MetS with TG/HDL-C, TyG, and non-HDL-C were 2.64, 8.52, and 111.6 for MetS1; 2.23, 8.47, and 110.7 for MetS2; and 2.64, 8.74, and 110.8 for MetS3, respectively. In conclusion, TG/HDL-C and TyG were similarly predictive of MetS. We propose using TG/HDL-C and TyG as surrogate markers for assessing MetS in Korean children and adolescents.

Abstract
Background Hyperhomocysteinemia (HHcy) and metabolic syndrome (MS) are established cardiovascular risk factors of stroke and are frequently associated with hypertension. However, studies on the association between HHcy combined with MS and stroke risk in hypertensive patients were absent. Material/Methods In 14 059 selected participants with elevated blood pressure, we assessed the prevalence of the MS and stroke. We defined HHcy as plasma total homocysteine >15 μmol/L. MS was defined according to the Chinese Diabetes Society (CDS) criterion. Multivariable analysis was used to examine the association of HHcy or (and) MS with stroke risk in different models. Results The prevalence rates of HHcy and MS were 49.96% and 42.21%, respectively. Patients with stroke had higher plasma total homocysteine levels and a higher prevalence of MS (P<0.001). Multivariable analyses indicated that HHcy and MS are independently associated with higher prevalence of stroke (adjusted-odds ratio (OR): 1.36, 95% CI 1.17 to 1.58, P<0.001; adjusted-OR: 1.68, 95% CI 1.44 to 1.96, P<0.001, respectively). Those with combined HHcy and MS had higher odds of stroke than those with isolated HHcy or MS (adjusted-OR: 1.78, 95% CI 1.47 to 2.15, P<0.001; adjusted-OR: 1.39, 95% CI 1.13 to 1.70, P=0.002, respectively). Conclusions HHcy combined with MS was associated with higher prevalence of stroke in Chinese adults with elevated blood pressure.

Abstract
Introduction Adult and pediatric data suggest a positive relationship between the extent of subclinical inflammation, blood pressure, and hypertension-mediated organ damage (HMOD) in primary hypertension (PH). 24-hour (24-h) ambulatory blood pressure (ABPM) and central blood pressure (CBP) are strong predictors of HMOD. Our study aimed to analyze the relationship between 24-h central ABPM, subclinical inflammation, and clinical data in adolescents with PH. Material and methods In 28 untreated adolescents with PH (14.50 ±2.27 years) and 25 healthy peers (14.76 ±2.83 years), we analyzed 24-h peripheral and central ABPM, markers of subclinical inflammation (neutrophil-to-lymphocyte ratio - NLR, platelet-to-lymphocyte ratio - PLR, mean platelet volume - MPV), and clinical and biochemical data. Results Patients with PH had higher 24-h peripheral and central blood pressure than healthy peers. In all 53 patients, we found significant (p < 0.05) positive correlations between NLR, PLR and 24-h central systolic, diastolic, and mean blood pressure (24-h cSBP, 24-h cDBP, 24-h cMAP), between 24-h central augmentation index corrected for heart rate 75 (24-h cAIx75HR) and platelet count. In 28 patients with PH, 24-h cAIx75HR correlated with low-density lipoprotein (LDL) cholesterol (R = 0.442), and ambulatory arterial stiffness index with body mass index (BMI) (R = 0.487), uric acid (R = 0.430), and high-density lipoprotein (HDL) cholesterol (R = -0.428). Conclusions Increased central 24-h blood pressure may be associated with immune system activation in adolescents with primary hypertension. In adolescents with primary hypertension, dyslipidemia and hyperuricemia are risk factors for increased arterial stiffness. Further studies on central and peripheral blood pressure in terms of their relationship with inflammation in these patients are needed.

Abstract
PURPOSE Whether elevated remnant cholesterol (RC) is associated with hypertension (HTN) and whether elevated RC interacts with diabetes on the subsequent risk of HTN have not been illustrated. Thus, this study is aimed to investigate the associations and interactions of RC, diabetes, and the management of cardiovascular risk factors with the risk of incident HTN in a Chinese population. PATIENTS AND METHODS This cohort study included 42,994 individuals who participated in the routine health check-up from April 2016 to August 2020 and follow-ups from April 2017 to August 2021 at the Medical Examination Center of Beijing Chao-Yang Hospital. RC was divided into quintiles as follows: the < 20% group, the 20-39% group, the 40-59% group, the 60-79% group, and the ≥ 80% group. This study finally included 17,006 participants who were free from HTN at baseline. RESULTS This study had 1,861 (10.90%) HTN occurred, 205 (5.30%) in the first quintile of RC, 335 (8.98%) in the second quintile of RC, 388 (11.17%) in the third quintile of RC, 420 (13.42%) in the fourth quintile of RC, and 513 (17.91%) in the fifth quintile of RC. Compared with participants in the first quintile of RC, participants in the fifth quintile of RC showed a greater risk of HTN events among participants with diabetes [hazard ratio (HR), 4.95; 95% confidence interval (CI), 1.05-23.39; P = 0.0432) than among participants without diabetes (HR, 1.67; 95% CI, 1.26-2.22, P = 0.0004; P for interaction = 0.0420). Compared with participants without diabetes, participants with diabetes who have the ideal management of RC and other risk factors showed no excess risk of HTN. CONCLUSIONS Elevated RC is significantly predictive of HTN among the diabetic population. RC and diabetes interacted with each other on the subsequent risk of HTN, and the desired management of RC, glucose, and cardiovascular risk factors on HTN risk was quite favorable.

Abstract
AIMS/HYPOTHESIS Limited data exist on the association between maternal diet quality during pregnancy and metabolic traits in offspring during early childhood, which is a sensitive period for risk of obesity-related disorders later in life. We aimed to examine the association of maternal diet quality, as indicated by the Healthy Eating Index-2010 (HEI), in pregnancy with offspring metabolic biomarkers and body composition at age 4-7 years. METHODS We used data from 761 mother-offspring pairs from the Healthy Start study to examine sex-specific associations of HEI >57 vs ≤57 with offspring fasting glucose, leptin, cholesterol, HDL, LDL, percentage fat mass, BMI z score and log-transformed insulin, 1/insulin, HOMA-IR, adiponectin, triacylglycerols, triacylglycerols:HDL, fat mass, and sum of skinfolds. Multivariable linear regression models accounted for maternal race/ethnicity, age, education, smoking habits during pregnancy and physical activity, and child's age. RESULTS During pregnancy, mean (SD) HEI score was 55.0 (13.3), and 43.0% had an HEI score >57. Among boys, there was an inverse association of maternal HEI with offspring glucose, insulin, HOMA-IR and adiponectin. For instance, maternal HEI >57 was associated with lower fasting glucose (-0.11; 95% CI -0.20, -0.02 mmol/l), and lower concentrations of: insulin by 15.3% (95% CI -24.6, -5.0), HOMA-IR by 16.3% (95% CI -25.7, -5.6) and adiponectin by 9.3% (95% CI -16.1, -2.0). Among girls, there was an inverse association of maternal HEI with insulin and a positive association with LDL. However, following covariate adjustment, all estimates among girls were attenuated to the null. CONCLUSIONS/INTERPRETATION Greater compliance with the USA Dietary Guidelines via the HEI may improve the maternal-fetal milieu and decrease susceptibility for poor metabolic health among offspring, particularly boys. Future studies are warranted to confirm these associations and determine the underlying mechanisms.

Abstract
INTRODUCTION To examine the triglyceride/glucose index (TyG) as an insulin resistance marker in obese children and adolescents and its relation to clinical and biochemical parameters, body composition and lifestyle. PATIENTS AND METHOD Sixty patients aged 7-16 years of age were enrolled. Anthropometric variables were recorded, together with pubertal stage, blood pressure and body composition assessed by bioimpedance. The TyG index was calculated as ln (fasting glucose (mg/dL) × triglycerides (mg/dL))/2 and the HOMA (homeostatic model assessment) index as fasting insulin (μU/mL) × fasting glucose (mmol/L)/22.5. Feeding habits were documented by adherence to the Mediterranean dietary pattern questionnaire, while physical activity was assessed using the International Sedentary Assessment Tool (ISAT), as well as accelerometry (Actigraph wGT3X+). RESULTS The mean TyG index was 4.45 ± 0.18, and proved higher in the pubertal group. We found a positive correlation with the HOMA index (r = 0.39; P = 0.03) and TG/HDL-c index (r = 0.53; P < 0.001). The best cut-off point of the TyG index for predicting insulin resistance was 4.21 in prepubertal children (sensitivity 84%, specificity 100%; AUC: 0.84) and 4.33 in pubertal children (sensitivity 89%, specificity 69%; AUC: 0.61). A positive correlation was found with screen time (r = 0.39; P = 0.01), as well as a negative correlation with caloric expenditure (Kcal/day) in the prepubertal group (r = -0.81; P = 0.005). CONCLUSIONS The TyG index could be a useful insulin resistance marker in the pediatric population. Moderate to vigorous physical activity should be encouraged, as well as restricting screen time for leisure purposes, mainly in the prepubertal group.

Abstract
BACKGROUND West syndrome is a convulsive disorder of infancy with unique seizures and a characteristic background electroencephalograph pattern. Adrenocorticotropic hormone (ACTH) is effective in spasm cessation, yet metabolic consequences of this therapeutic agent in childhood have not been published. METHODS In this observational study we explored the cardiometabolic outcomes of 117 children with West syndrome (78 ACTH-treated and 39 non-ACTH-treated) monitored at a single medical center from 1995 to 2019 (median follow-up 7.2 years). Outcomes included the prevalence of cardiometabolic derangements (obesity, hypertension, and dyslipidemia) during infancy (< 2 years), early childhood (2-6 years), and childhood/adolescence (6-18 years). RESULTS The rates of metabolic derangements during infancy in the West syndrome cohort were high compared to childhood/adolescence (obesity 27.3 % vs. 3.3 %, [p = 0.010], diastolic hypertension 48.8 % vs. 5.1 % [p < 0.001], hypertriglyceridemia 71 % vs. 40 % [p = 0.008], low high-density lipoprotein cholesterol [HDL-c] 54.2 % vs. 12.9 % [p = 0.001], and elevated triglycerides/HDL-c ratios 62.5 % vs. 12.9 % [p < 0.001]). The proportion of systolic and/or diastolic blood pressure levels categorized as hypertensive was 58.5 % during infancy, 48.1 % during early childhood, and 26.3 % during childhood/adolescence. ACTH-treated patients had higher weight and weight-to-length z-scores and higher triglyceride levels during infancy compared to non-ACTH-treated patients (p = 0.008, p = 0.001, and p = 0.037, respectively), and higher triglyceride levels during early childhood (p = 0.050), with no significant group differences during childhood/adolescence. CONCLUSIONS Children with West syndrome apparently have an increased prevalence of cardiometabolic derangements more pronounced in infants and in ACTH-treated patients. These findings highlight the need to monitor these children for cardiometabolic derangements, even though these cardiometabolic abnormalities are transitory and tend to decrease with time. The health implications of cardiometabolic derangements during critical windows of growth and development warrant further investigation.

Abstract
The increasing burden of obesity plays an essential role in increased cardiovascular morbidity and mortality. The effects of obesity on the cardiovascular system have also been demonstrated in childhood, where prevention is even more important. Obesity is associated with hormonal changes and vascular dysfunction, which eventually lead to hypertension, hyperinsulinemia, chronic kidney disease, dyslipidemia and cardiac dysfunction—all associated with increased cardiovascular risk, leading to potential cardiovascular events in early adulthood. Several preventive strategies are being implemented to reduce the cardiovascular burden in children. This paper presents a comprehensive review of obesity-associated cardiovascular morbidity with the preventive diagnostic workup at our hospital and possible interventions in children.

Abstract
Background Essential hypertension in adults may begin in childhood. The damages to the heart and blood vessels in children with essential hypertension are hidden and difficult to detect. We noninvasively examined changes in cardiovascular structure and function in children with hypertension at early stage using ultrasonography. Methods All patients with essential hypertension admitted from March 2020 to May 2021 were classified into simple hypertension (group 1, n = 34) and hypertension co-existing with obesity (group 2, n = 11) isolation. Meanwhile 32 healthy children were detected as control heathly group (group 3). We used pulse-wave Doppler to measure carotid–femoral pulse wave velocity (cfPWV), intimal–medial thickness (cIMT) and distensibility of carotid artery (CD). Cardiac structure and function (left atrial diameter [LAD], left ventricular mass [LVM], LVM index [LVMI], relative wall thicknes [RWT], end-diastolic left ventricular internal diameter [LVIDd], diastolic interventricular septum thickness [IVSd], diastolic left ventricular posterior wall thickness [LVPWd], root diameter of aorta [AO], E peak, A peak, E' peak, A' peak, E/E' ratio, and E/A ratio) were measured by echocardiography. Results The cfPWV of children in group 1 and group 2 were significantly higher than healthy children in group 3. Significant differences were observed in LVM, LVMI, RWT, LVIDd, IVSd, LVPWd, LAD, A peak, E' peak, A' peak, and E/E’ among three groups. Conclusion Children and adolescents with essential hypertension demonstrate target organ damages in the heart and blood vessels.

Abstract
OBJECTIVES The relationship between lipid levels and arterial stiffness remains controversial. Therefore, we aimed to determine the relationship between lipid profiles and brachial-ankle pulse wave velocity (baPWV) as an indicator of arterial stiffness. METHODS A total of 909 participants aged 24 to 84 years were stratified into four baPWV quartiles in our study. Serum lipids, baPWV, and other variables of the participants were measured. Univariable and multivariable linear regression analyses were used to examine the relationships between lipid parameters and baPWV. RESULTS The highest baPWV quartile group had higher aspartate transaminase, alanine aminotransferase, plasma glucose, total cholesterol, triglyceride (TG), and low-density lipoprotein cholesterol levels and maximum ankle-brachial index, and lower high-density lipoprotein cholesterol levels and estimated glomerular filtration rate. Univariate regression analysis showed that total cholesterol, TG, and low-density lipoprotein cholesterol levels were positively related and high-density lipoprotein cholesterol levels were negatively related to baPWV. After adjusting for age, body mass index, smoking status, aspartate transaminase, alanine aminotransferase, plasma glucose, and estimated glomerular filtration rate, only TG levels were correlated with baPWV (β = 0.075). CONCLUSIONS Four lipid variates are associated with arterial stiffness, and TG levels are positively related to arterial stiffness, independent of cardiovascular risks and liver function.

Anthropometric variables were recorded, together with pubertal stage, blood pressure and body composition assessed by bioimpedance. The TyG index was calculated as ln (fasting glucose (mg/dL)×triglycerides (mg/dL))/2 and the HOMA (homeostatic model assessment) index as fasting insulin (μU/mL)×fasting glucose (mmol/L)/22.5. Feeding habits were documented by adherence to the Mediterranean dietary pattern questionnaire, while physical activity was assessed using the International Sedentary Assessment Tool (ISAT), as well as accelerometry (Actigraph wGT3X+). RESULTS The mean TyG index was 4.45±0.18, and proved higher in the pubertal group. We found a positive correlation with the HOMA index (r=0.39; P=.03) and TG/HDL-c index (r=0.53; P<.001). The best cut-off point of the TyG index for predicting insulin resistance was 4.21 in prepubertal children (sensitivity 84%, specificity 100%; AUC: 0.84) and 4.33 in pubertal children (sensitivity 89%, specificity 69%; AUC: 0.61). A positive correlation was found with screen time (r=0.39; P=.01), as well as a negative correlation with caloric expenditure (Kcal/day) in the prepubertal group (r=-0.81; P=.005). CONCLUSIONS The TyG index could be a useful insulin resistance marker in the pediatric population. Moderate to vigorous physical activity should be encouraged, as well as restricting screen time for leisure purposes, mainly in the prepubertal group.

Abstract
BACKGROUND The risk of weight gain as a consequence of school closure in children during the coronavirus disease-2019 (COVID-19) pandemic has been recognized. This study was performed to investigate changes in anthropometric and metabolic parameters in children following a 6-month period of social distancing and school closure due to the pandemic. METHODS This retrospective cohort study was conducted in school-aged children that were on routine follow-up at the Growth Clinic of Seoul St. Mary's Hospital. Changes in body mass index (BMI) standard deviation scores (z-scores), lipid profiles, and vitamin D levels were investigated. The 1-year period prior to school closure was defined as "pre-COVID-19 period," and the subsequent 6-month period as "COVID-19 period." RESULTS Overall, 226 children between 4 to 14 years old without comorbidities were assessed. On average, their BMI z-scores increased by 0.219 (95% confidence interval [CI], 0.167-0.271; P < 0.001) in the COVID-19 period compared to the pre-COVID-19 period, and the proportion of overweight or obesity increased from 23.9% in the pre-COVID-19 period to 31.4% in the COVID-19 period. The number of days after school closure (P = 0.004) and being in the normoweight category in the pre-COVID-19 period (P = 0.017) were factors associated with an increased BMI in the COVID-19 period. The mean triglyceride (105.8 mg/dL vs. 88.6 mg/dL, P < 0.001) and low-density lipoprotein-cholesterol (100.2 mg/dL vs. 94.0 mg/dL, P = 0.002) levels were higher, whereas the calcidiol level (18.9 mg/dL vs. 23.8 mg/dL, P < 0.001) was lower in the COVID-19 period compared to the pre-COVID-19 period. CONCLUSION Within 6 months, increased childhood obesity and vitamin D deficiencies were observed. The duration of school closure was significantly associated with an increased BMI and being normoweight does not exclude the risks for gaining weight.

Abstract
Background Dyslipidemia contributes to the development and progression of arterial stiffness. We aimed to identify the most informative measures of serum lipids and their calculated ratios in terms of arterial stiffness progression risk. Methods Total cholesterol (TC), triglyceride (TG), low-density lipoprotein cholesterol (LDL-C), high-density lipoprotein cholesterol (HDL-C), and brachial-ankle pulse wave velocity (baPWV) of 659 healthy males (47.4 ± 10.7 years) were measured at baseline. Values for non-HDL-C, TC/HDL-C, TG/HDL-C, LDL-C/HDL-C, and non-HDL-C/HDL-C were calculated. BaPWV was re-performed after 4.1 years follow-up. Elevated baPWV was defined as baPWV ≥ 1400 cm/s. Results Over the follow-up period, the mean baPWV value increased from 1340 cm/s to 1410 cm/s, and 331 individuals increased/persisted with high baPWV (outcome 1). Among the 448 subjects who had normal baseline baPWV, 100 incident elevated baPWV occurred (outcome 2). Only baseline logTG (OR 1.64 [95% CI: 1.14–2.37] for outcome 1; 1.89 [1.14–3.17] for outcome 2) and logTG/HDL-C (1.54 [1.15–2.10] for outcome 1; 1.60 [1.05–2.45] for outcome 2) were significantly associated with arterial stiffness progression after adjusting for confounding factors. Adding logTG or logTG/HDL-C to age and blood pressure improved the accuracy of risk predictions for arterial stiffness progression. These associations remained significant when lipids were analyzed as categorical variables. Conclusions Baseline serum TG and TG/HDL-C were independently associated with increases in/persistently high baPWV and incident elevated baPWV, and they performed more effectively than other lipid variables in identifying healthy men at high risk of arterial stiffness progression.

Abstract
OBJECTIVE To test the hypothesis that lipid intake is associated with triglycerides to HDL-cholesterol ratio (TG/HDL-cholesterol), a predictor of the development of cardiovascular disease, in obese children and adolescents, independently from the level of overweight, insulin resistance, blood pressure, and non-alcoholic fatty liver disease (NAFLD). STUDY DESIGN One hundred and eighty non-diabetic obese children/adolescents (age range 6-16 years) were enrolled. Diet (3-day weighed dietary record), physical and biochemical parameters and liver ultrasonography were measured. The impact of lipid intake on TG/HDL-cholesterol ratio >2.2 was measured by regression models, adjusting for covariates (age, gender, height, weight, systolic and diastolic blood pressure, NAFLD positivity, HOMA-IR, and total energy intake). RESULTS Independently from covariates, children consuming a diet with a fat content higher than 35% of total energy had a significantly higher chance [OR = 3.333 (95% CI: 1.113-9.979), P = 0.031] to have a TG/HDL-cholesterol >2.2 than children consuming less than 35% of fat. Moreover, if saturated fatty acids (SFA) intake was higher than 13% of total energy, children had a significantly higher chance [OR = 4.804 (95% CI: 1.312-17.593), P = 0.018] to have a TG/HDL-cholesterol >2.2 than children consuming less than 13% of SFA in their diet. CONCLUSIONS High fat intake, especially SFA intake, is associated with TG/HDL-cholesterol levels of obese children and adolescents, independently from other cardiovascular risk co-factors. Further intervention studies will contribute to clarify the potential role of changes in the composition and amount of fat in the diet of obese children and adolescents, on their cardiovascular risk factors.

Abstract
The ratio of triglyceride (TG)/high-density lipoprotein cholesterol (HDL-C) has been proposed as an easily obtainable atherogenic marker and high TG/HDL-C ratio is associated with insulin resistance. This study investigated the associated between a high TG/HDL-C ratio and cardiovascular mortality in patients with ST-segment elevation myocardial infarction (STEMI), with or without diabetes mellitus (DM).Between January 2005 and December 2014, 1661 patients with STEMI underwent primary percutaneous coronary intervention in our hospital. Of these, 289 were classified into group 1 (with both DM and a high TG/HDL-C ratio), 295 into group 2 (with DM, but without a high TG/HDL-C ratio), 501 into group 3 (without DM, but a high TG/HDL-C ratio), and 576 into group 4 (without DM or a high TG/HDL-C ratio).Older age, longer chest pain to reperfusion time, poor hemodynamic condition, and higher prevalence of multiple vessel coronary artery disease were noted in those with DM. Poor outcomes including higher 30-day and 1-year cardiovascular mortality and all-cause mortality rates were noted in those with DM but without a high TG/HDL-C ratio. Patients with DM but without a high TG/HDL-C ratio had a Hazard ratio of 3.637 for cardiovascular mortality relative to those without DM, but without a high TG/HDL-C ratio.Even though a high TG/HDL-C ratio is associated with insulin resistance, patients with or without DM, but with a high TG/HDL-C ratio had better 30-day and 1-year outcomes.

Abstract
Objective To determine the relationship between nutritional status according to body mass index (BMI) and triglyceride index/c-HDL in adolescents treated in a public hospital. Materials and methods Observational, transversal, and retrospective study of the nutritional education database program of Hospital I - Rioja - EsSalud, from March 2017 to June 2018. The nutritional status was determined according to the body mass index for age (BMI/age) and the index of Tg/c-HDL as the ratio between triglycerides and HDL cholesterol. Results The study was made up of 130 adolescents (70 females and 60 males) between 10 - 18 years old, who were treated in the nutrition service of Hospital I - Rioja- EsSalud. The average age of the adolescents was 12.6 ± 2.2 years. The average Tg/c-HDL index was 2.41 ± 0.48; it was higher in males (2.46 ± 0.51) than in females (2.37 ± 0.44); likewise, obesity (2.70 ± 0.49), overweight (2.46 ± 0.41) and the risk of underweight (2.36 ± 0.55) were the nutritional states that presented the highest Tg/c-HDL index. A positive and significant correlation (r=0.447, p=0.000) was found between BMI and Tg/c-HDL index. Conclusions There was a positive and statistically significant relationship between the body mass index and the Tg / HDL-c index in this adolescent population. The Tg / HDL-c index was higher in the nutritional status of obesity and overweight, exceeding the value of the media population.

Abstract
Background Both lipid and glucose abnormalities are associated with hypertension (HTN). However, it is unclear whether the triglyceride-glucose (TyG) index is associated with HTN. Therefore the aim of this study is to investigate the association of the TyG index and HTN and to compare the discriminative power of the TyG index, lipid, glycemic parameters for the risk of HTN in elderly individuals. Methods The present study was nested in a longitudinal (REACTION) study from May 2011 to December 2011, which was designed to demonstrate the association of abnormal glucose metabolism with the risk of cancer in the Chinese population. In total, 47,808 participants were recruited in this cross-sectional study. The TyG index was divided into five groups: the < 20% group, the 20–39% group, the 40–59% group, the 60–79% group and the ≥ 80% group, according to quintile division of the subjects. Three multivariate logistic regression models were used to evaluate the association between the TyG vs. lipid parameters, glycemic parameters and HTN. Results Multivariate logistic regression analysis shows that compared with lipid and glycemic parameters, the TyG index remains significantly associated with HTN in either total subjects or subjects separated into men and women (odds ratio (OR) 1.33, 95% confidence interval (CI) 1.18–1.51, p < 0.0001 in total subjects; OR 1.39, 95% CI 1.11–1.74, p = 0.0042 in men; OR 1.28, 95% CI 1.11–1.49, p = 0.0010 in women). In a stratified analysis, an elevated TyG index is significantly associated with HTN in the subgroup of the oldest age (≥ 65) (OR 1.67, 95% CI 1.30–2.14, p < 0.0001), as well as with obesity (Body mass index (BMI) ≥ 28 kg/m2) (OR 1.85, 95% CI 1.29–2.66, p = 0.0009) or lower estimated glomerular filtration rate (eGFR) (< 90 mL/(min·1.73 m2)) (OR 1.72, 95% CI 1.33–2.21, p < 0.0001). Conclusion The TyG index is significantly associated with HTN and shows the superior discriminative ability for HTN compared with lipid and glycemic parameters in the Chinese elderly population.

Abstract
Measurement of aortic pulse wave velocity (PWVao) is recommended for stratifying individual cardiovascular (CV) risk in adults. Diseases in children and adolescents might influence aortic stiffness. It is necessary to exclude overweight (OW), obese (O) subjects, and individuals with increased systolic (SBP) and/or diastolic blood pressure (DBP) from the population, when creating normal values of PWVao in children and adolescents. Body mass index (BMI), SBP/DBP cut-off values have remarkably changed in this population during the last decade. Aims of our study were to expand our previously published PWVao database and to revise it by using the recently determined normal values. PWVao was measured by an occlusive-oscillometric device (Arteriograph, TensioMed Ltd, Budapest, Hungary) in a healthy population aged 3-18 years. 7940 (4374 boys) participants were recruited, 1912 OW/O subjects and 1368 individuals with high SBP/DBP were excluded. Finally, n = 4690 (2599 boys) participants were enrolled. Mean PWVao values increased from 5.4 ± 0.6 to 6.4 ± 0.5 m/s (p < 0.05) in boys and from 5.5 ± 0.6 to 6.4 ± 0.5 m/s (p < 0.05) in girls. Mean PWVao values were significantly lower in our new study, in boys in age groups of 9-16, in girls in age groups of 11-17. This is the largest and widest age-ranged database of PWVao published to date. Due to the change of BMI and SBP/DBP reference values during the last decade, the "old" database of PWVao needed to be revised. As a result of this, normal values of PWVao decreased significantly in both sexes.

Abstract
Retinol-binding protein-4 (RBP-4) along with the lipid profile plays crucial roles in Acute coronary syndrome (ACS). The study aimed to investigate the correlation of RBP-4, lipoprotein combine index (LCI), and RBP-4 + LCI with ACS. 163 ACS and 77 non-CAD in patients were consecutively enrolled in this study. The serum level of RBP-4 was measured via enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay. LCI was calculated using the formula: total cholesterol × triglyceride × low-density lipoprotein cholesterol/high-density lipoprotein cholesterol. RBP-4 ≥4 ng/ml, LCI ≥16 and LCI ≥16 + RBP-4 ≥4 ng/ml were new independent risk factors of ACS, and OR value of LCI ≥16 + RBP-4 ≥4 ng/ml was higher than that of RBP-4 and LCI combined (all p < 0.05). The AUC for LCI + RBP-4 was higher than that for LCI and RBP-4 individually. The risk of high LCI in 1 lesion vessel was greater than those of 2 or ≥3 lesion vessels (all p < 0.05). In 1 lesion vessel or ≥3 lesion vessels group, the risk associated with LCI and RBP-4 combined was higher than the risk of LCI or RBP-4 alone (all p < 0.05). The risk of hypertension, diabetes mellitus, smoking and history of MI increased with numbers of vessels lesion (all p < 0.05). Increase in RBP-4 and LCI values were found to be independent risk factors for ACS, and the risk of the combined rise in LCI and RBP-4 values was higher than LCI or RBP-4 alone. The combined tests of LCI and RBP-4 might be a potential diagnostic marker for ACS.

Abstract
INTRODUCTION Childhood obesity and inactivity are associated with cardiovascular risk. Evidence is limited for exercise effects on arterial health in children. METHODS One hundred and seventy-five inactive children with overweight or obesity (8-11 years, ≥85th percentile BMI, 61% female, 87% Black, 73% with obesity) were randomized to an 8-month daily after-school aerobic exercise program (40 min/day, n = 90) or a sedentary control condition (n = 85). Carotid-femoral pulse wave velocity (PWV, primary outcome, arterial stiffness), fitness, adiposity, blood pressure (BP), glucose, insulin resistance, lipids, and C-reactive protein were measured at baseline and posttest (8 months). Adiposity, fitness, and BP were measured again at follow-up, 8-12 months later. Intent-to-treat analyses were conducted using mixed models. RESULTS The study had 89% retention, with attendance of 59% in exercise and 64% in the control condition, and vigorous exercise participation (average heart rate 161 ± 7 beats/min). Compared with controls, the exercise group had twice the improvement in fitness (VȮ2 peak, 2.7 (95% CI 1.8, 3.6) vs. 1.3 (0.4, 2.3) mL/kg/min) and adiposity (-1.8 (-2.4, -1.1) vs. -0.8 (-1.5, -0.1)%), each p = 0.04, and a large improvement in HDL-cholesterol (0.13 (0.075, 0.186) vs. -0.028 (-0.083, 0.023) mmol/L, p < 0.0001). There was no group × time effect on other outcomes at 8 months, or on any outcomes at follow-up. The change in PWV at 8 months correlated with changes in insulin and insulin resistance (both r = 0.32), diastolic BP (r = 0.24), BMI (r = 0.22), and adiposity (r = 0.18). CONCLUSIONS Eight months of aerobic exercise training improved fitness, adiposity, and HDL-cholesterol levels, but did not reduce arterial stiffness in children with excess weight. PWV improved as a function of insulin resistance, BP, BMI, and adiposity. Weight loss may be required to improve arterial stiffness. Exercise benefits waned after discontinuing the program.

Abstract
Background Insulin resistance may contribute to aortic stiffening that leads to end-organ damage. We examined the cross-sectional association and prospective association of insulin resistance and aortic stiffness in older adults without diabetes. Methods We analyzed 2571 men and women at Visit 5 (in 2011–2013), and 2350 men and women at repeat examinations from baseline at Visit 1 (in 1987–1989) to Visit 5 (in 2011–2013). Linear regression was used to estimate the difference in aortic stiffness per standard unit of HOMA-IR, TG/HDL-C, and TyG at Visit 5. Linear mixed effects were used to assess if high, as opposed to non-high, aortic stiffness (> 75th percentile) was preceded by a faster annual rate of change in log-HOMA-IR, log-TG/HDL-C, and log-TyG from Visit 1 to Visit 5. Results The mean age of participants was 75 years, 37% (n = 957) were men, and 17% (n = 433) were African American. At Visit 5, higher HOMA-IR, higher TG/HDL-C, and higher TyG were associated with higher aortic stiffness (16 cm/s per SD (95% CI 6, 27), 29 cm/s per SD (95% CI 18, 40), and 32 cm/s per SD (95% CI 22, 42), respectively). From Visit 1 to Visit 5, high aortic stiffness, compared to non-high aortic stiffness, was not preceded by a faster annual rate of change in log-HOMA-IR from baseline to 9 years (0.030 (95% CI 0.024, 0.035) vs. 0.025 (95% CI 0.021, 0.028); p = 0.15) or 9 years onward (0.011 (95% CI 0.007, 0.015) vs. 0.011 (95% CI 0.009, 0.013); p = 0.31); in log-TG/HDL-C from baseline to 9 years (0.019 (95% CI 0.015, 0.024) vs. 0.024 (95% CI 0.022, 0.026); p = 0.06) or 9 years onward (− 0.007 (95% CI − 0.010, − 0.005) vs. − 0.009 (95% CI − 0.010, − 0.007); p = 0.08); or in log-TyG from baseline to 9 years (0.002 (95% CI 0.002, 0.003) vs. 0.003 (95% CI 0.003, 0.003); p = 0.03) or 9 years onward (0 (95% CI 0, 0) vs. 0 (95% CI 0, 0); p = 0.08). Conclusions Among older adults without diabetes, insulin resistance was associated with aortic stiffness, but the putative role of insulin resistance in aortic stiffness over the life course requires further study.

Abstract
ABSTRACT Objective: Analyze the occurrence of dyslipidaemia and associated factors in children aged 2 to 9 years. Method: Cross-sectional study, carried out with 700 children, in a region of Northeast Brazil. For comparison of means, Student’s t test was used; and, for the comparison of medians, the Mann-Whitney test. Results: A prevalence of dyslipidaemia of 68.4% was found. In isolation, the majority had a level of: total desirable cholesterol (386; 55.1%), undesirable lipoprotein cholesterol (376; 53.7%), low density lipoproteins - desirable cholesterol (514; 73.4%) and desirable triglyceride (509; 72.7%). In the final multivariate model, only the variable “preschool age” was significant (prevalence ratio = 1.14), indicating that these children are more likely to have dyslipidaemia than those of school age. Conclusion: An association was found between dyslipidaemia and preschool age. The need for programs and strategies to better understand this problem is indicated, in addition to preventing early coronary diseases.

Abstract
UNLABELLED Hip fractures are associated with increased mortality and it is important to identify risk factors. This study demonstrates that preexisting cardiovascular disease as well as cardiovascular biomarkers that are associated with increased 30-day mortality. These findings can be used to identify high-risk patients who might benefit from specialized care. INTRODUCTION This study investigates the association between cardiovascular disease (CVD), cardiovascular biomarkers, and 30-day mortality following a hip fracture. METHODS The Danish National Patient Registry was used to investigate the association between CVD and mortality following hip fracture in a nationwide population-based cohort study. In a subset of the included patients (n = 355), blood samples were available from a local biobank. These samples were used for analyzing the association between specific biochemical markers and mortality. The primary outcome was 30-day mortality. RESULTS A total of 113,211 patients were included in the population-based cohort study. Among these, heart failure was present in 9.4%, ischemic heart disease in 15.9%, and ischemic stroke in 12.0%. Within 30 days after the hip fracture, 11,488 patients died, resulting in an overall 30-day mortality of 10.1%. The 30-day mortality was significantly increased in individuals with preexisting CVD with multivariably adjusted odds ratios of 1.69 (95% confidence interval, 1.60-1.78) for heart failure, 1.23 (1.17-1.29) for ischemic heart disease, and 1.06 (1.00-1.12) for ischemic stroke. In the local database including 355 patients, 41 (11.5%) died within 30 days. The multivariably adjusted odds ratio for 30-day mortality increased with increasing NT-proBNP (2.36 [1.53-3.64] per quartile) and decreased with increasing HDL cholesterol (0.58 [0.41-0.82] per quartile). On this basis, we established a model for predicting the probability of death based on the biochemical markers. CONCLUSION Preexisting CVD was associated with increased 30-day mortality after a hip fracture. Furthermore, high levels of NT-proBNP and low levels of HDL cholesterol were associated with increased 30-day mortality.

Abstract
Apolipoprotein (APO) E (ε) genotype is considered to play an important role in lipid responses to dietary fat manipulation but the impact on novel cardiometabolic risk markers is unclear. To address this knowledge gap, we investigated the relationship between the APOE genotype and cardiometabolic risk markers in response to acute and chronic dietary fat intakes. Associations with fasting (baseline) outcome measures (n = 218) were determined using data from the chronic DIVAS (n = 191/195 adults at moderate cardiovascular disease risk) and acute DIVAS-2 (n = 27/32 postmenopausal women) studies examining the effects of diets/meals varying in saturated, polyunsaturated and monounsaturated (MUFA) fatty acid composition. Participants were retrospectively genotyped for APOE (rs429358, rs7412). For baseline cardiometabolic outcomes, E4 carriers had higher fasting total and low-density lipoprotein-cholesterol (LDL-C), total cholesterol: high-density lipoprotein-cholesterol (HDL-C) and LDL-C: HDL-C ratios, but lower C-reactive protein (CRP) than E3/E3 and E2 carriers (p ≤ 0.003). Digital volume pulse stiffness index was higher in E2 carriers than the E3/E3 group (p = 0.011). Following chronic dietary fat intake, the significant diet × genotype interaction was found for fasting triacylglycerol (p = 0.010), with indication of a differential responsiveness to MUFA intake between the E3/E3 and E4 carriers (p = 0.006). Test fat × genotype interactions were observed for the incremental area under the curve for the postprandial apolipoprotein B (apoB; p = 0.022) and digital volume pulse reflection index (DVP-RI; p = 0.030) responses after the MUFA-rich meals, with a reduction in E4 carriers and increase in the E3/E3 group for the apoB response, but an increase in E4 carriers and decrease in the E3/E3 group for the DVP-RI response. In conclusion, baseline associations between the APOE genotype and fasting lipids and CRP confirm previous findings, although a novel interaction with digital volume pulse arterial stiffness was observed in the fasted state and differential postprandial apoB and DVP-RI responses after the MUFA-rich meals. The reported differential impact of the APOE genotype on cardiometabolic markers in the acute and chronic state requires confirmation.

Abstract
Background Triglycerides (TG)/high-density lipoprotein (HDL) cholesterol ratio is a marker of small/dense low-density lipoprotein particles, which are closely associated with various metabolic and vascular diseases. However, the role of TG/HDL cholesterol ratio in cerebrovascular diseases has not been well studied. In this study, we evaluated the relationship between TG/HDL cholesterol ratio and the presence of silent brain infarct (SBI) in a neurologically healthy population. Methods We retrospectively evaluated consecutive participants in health check-ups between January 2006 and December 2013. SBI was defined as an asymptomatic, well-defined lesion with a diameter of ≥3 mm on T1- or T2-weighted images. TG/HDL cholesterol ratio was calculated after dividing absolute TG levels by absolute HDL cholesterol levels. Results Of 3172 healthy participants, 263 (8.3%) had SBI lesions. In multivariate analysis, TG/HDL cholesterol ratio was independently associated with SBI (adjusted odds ratio [aOR] = 1.16, 95% confidence interval [CI] = 1.00 to 1.34, P = 0.047). This association was prominent in males (aOR = 1.23, 95% CI = 1.03 to 1.48, P = 0.021), but not in females. In the analyses of the relationships between lipid parameters and SBI lesion burden, TG/HDL cholesterol ratio was positively correlated, and total cholesterol/TG ratio was negatively correlated with SBI lesion burden, in dose-response manners (P for trend = 0.015 and 0.002, respectively). Conclusions The TG/HDL cholesterol ratio was positively associated with the prevalence of SBI in a neurologically healthy population. Abstract
Purpose We recently reported that children and adolescents with a history of Kawasaki disease (KD) had slight but significant elastic arterial stiffness even when no coronary artery lesions (CALs) were present. Moreover, we hypothesized that KD-related arteriopathy may also cause peripheral artery dysfunction. The objective of this study was to assess the involvement of radial artery pulse waves, especially reflection waves from the peripheral arteries using the radial artery augmentation index (rAI) in patients without CALs after KD. Materials and methods We first collected the rAI data from 312 subjects (149 consecutive patients of KD and 163 control subjects). Next, 225 cases between 6 and 15 years old were selected. Finally, 41 pairs were included for analysis. The rAI values of these two groups were compared and analyzed. Acute-phase data were also collected to reveal the possible correlation with rAI in the convalescent period. Results Multivariable analysis revealed the history of KD was positively correlated with rAI@75 value in children from 6 to 15 years old. After pairing the height and gender, the KD group also had significantly higher rAI and rAI@75 than the control group (rAI 60.63±13.77 vs 54.56±13.17, p=0.028; rAI@75 63.61±15.21 vs 55.68±14.86, p=0.003). With regard to acute-phase condition, nonresponse to initial treatment was also linked to elevated rAI during the convalescent period. Conclusions During the convalescent period, the rAI increased in KD patients without acute CALs. Furthermore, nonresponse to initial treatment in acute phase conferred higher rAI to KD subjects than respondent cases. Elevated rAI means the reflection wave from the peripheral vascular is stronger or earlier. This small but significant change may indicate the existence of peripheral artery stiffness during the convalescent period.

Abstract
OBJECTIVES Dyslipidaemia is a metabolic disease influenced by environmental and genetic factors. Especially, family history related to genetic background is a strong risk factor of lipid abnormality. The aim of this study is to evaluate the association between the lipid profiles of adolescents and their mothers. DESIGN A cross-sectional study. SETTING The data were derived from the Korea National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey (IV-VI) between 2009 and 2015. PARTICIPANTS 2884 adolescents aged 12-18 years and their mothers were included. PRIMARY OUTCOME MEASURES Outcome variables were adolescents' lipid levels. Mothers' lipid levels were the interesting variables. The lipid profiles included total cholesterol (TC), triglyceride (TG), high-density lipoprotein cholesterol (HDL-C) and low-density lipoprotein cholesterol (LDL-C). We identified partial correlation coefficients (r) between the lipids. Multiple linear regressions were performed to identify the amount of change in adolescents' lipid levels for each unit increase of their mothers' lipids. The regression models included various clinical characteristics and health behavioural factors of both adolescents and mothers. RESULTS The mean levels of adolescents' lipids were 156.6, 83.6, 50.4 and 89.4 mg/dL, respectively for TC, TG, HDL-C and LDL-C. Positive correlations between lipid levels of adolescents and mothers were observed for TC, TG, HDL-C and LDL-C (r, 95% CI: 0.271, 0.236 to 0.304; 0.204, 0.169 to 0.239; 0.289, 0.255 to 0.322; and 0.286, 0.252 to 0.319). The adolescent TC level was increased by 0.23 mg/dL for each unit increase of the mother's TC (SE, 0.02; p<0.001). The beta coefficients were 0.16 (SE, 0.01), 0.24 (SE, 0.02) and 0.24 (SE, 0.02), respectively, in each model of TG, HDL-C and LDL-C (all p<0.001). The linear relationships were significant regardless of sex and mother's characteristics. CONCLUSIONS Mothers' lipid levels are associated with adolescents' lipids; therefore, they can serve as a reference for the screening of adolescent's dyslipidaemia.

Abstract
Objective The objective of this study was to determine whether cardiovascular disease (CVD) risk factors and stress hormones are associated with cognitive performance in Mexican adolescents. Methods This was a cross-sectional study including 139 Mexican adolescents 10-14 years old. Participants were divided into three categories: 0, 1-2, and ≥3 CVD risk factors. These factors included: high-density lipoprotein-cholesterol (HDL-C) <40 mg/dl; waist circumference (WC) ≥90th percentile for age and sex, systolic or diastolic blood pressure ≥90th percentile for age, sex, and height; and triacylglycerols (TGs) ≥110 mg/dl. Low-density lipoprotein-cholesterol (LDL-C), very low-density lipoprotein-cholesterol (VLDL-C), total cholesterol, cortisol, and plasma catecholamines were measured as well. Furthermore, attention, memory, and executive functions were evaluated using a validated test for Spanish-speaking individuals (Neuropsi). Results Adolescents in the three risk categories did not show significant differences in Neuropsi test performance tasks; however, they presented different lipid and plasma norepinephrine concentrations. TG and VLDL-C were inversely associated with memory (r = -0.19, **p < .01). Multivariate regression analysis showed consistently that TG/HDL-C ratio was inversely related to attention-memory general score (standardized β = -0.99, t = -2.30, p = .023), memory (standardized β = -0.83, t = -2.08, p = .039), and attention-executive functions (standardized β = -1.02, t = -2.42, p = .017). Plasma epinephrine levels presented an inverse and weak relation to the attention-executive functions score (standardized β = -0.18, t = -2.19, p = .030). Conclusions Cognitive performance is not completely dependent on the accumulation of risk factors, but instead on the combination of strong predictors of CVD like waist to height ratio, TG/HDL-C, and VLDL-C. Plasma norepinephrine and epinephrine have a stronger association with cognition and CVD risk than dopamine and cortisol.

Abstract
Insulin resistance is associated with subclinical vascular disease that is not justified by conventional cardiovascular risk factors, such as smoking or hypercholesterolemia. Vascular injury associated to insulin resistance involves functional and structural damage to the arterial wall that includes impaired vasodilation in response to chemical mediators, reduced distensibility of the arterial wall (arterial stiffness), vascular calcification, and increased thickness of the arterial wall. Vascular dysfunction associated to insulin resistance is present in asymptomatic subjects and predisposes to cardiovascular diseases, such as heart failure, ischemic heart disease, stroke, and peripheral vascular disease. Structural and functional vascular disease associated to insulin resistance is highly predictive of cardiovascular morbidity and mortality. Its pathogenic mechanisms remain undefined. Prospective studies have demonstrated that animal protein consumption increases the risk of developing cardiovascular disease and predisposes to type 2 diabetes (T2D) whereas vegetable protein intake has the opposite effect. Vascular disease linked to insulin resistance begins to occur early in life. Children and adolescents with insulin resistance show an injured arterial system compared with youth free of insulin resistance, suggesting that insulin resistance plays a crucial role in the development of initial vascular damage. Prevention of the vascular dysfunction related to insulin resistance should begin early in life. Before the clinical onset of T2D, asymptomatic subjects endure a long period of time characterized by insulin resistance. Latent vascular dysfunction begins to develop during this phase, so that patients with T2D are at increased cardiovascular risk long before the diagnosis of the disease.

Abstract
The ratio of triglyceride to high-density lipoprotein cholesterol (TG/HDL) is positively linked to insulin resistance, and it has emerged as an independent predictor of cardiovascular disease. Menopause is characterized by various detrimental metabolic and vascular changes that may lead to high TG with low HDL cholesterol and arterial stiffness. Several epidemiological studies have reported that high TG/HDL ratio has a positive association with arterial stiffness in both adult and adolescent populations; it is not known whether TG/HDL ratio is related to brachial-ankle PWV (baPWV) in postmenopausal women. Thus, the authors aimed to investigate the association between TG/HDL ratio and arterial stiffness as measured by baPWV in 434 postmenopausal women. The odds ratios (ORs) and 95% confidence intervals (95% CIs) for high baPWV were calculated after adjusting for confounding variables across TG/HDL ratio quartiles using multiple logistic regression analysis. The mean values of meaningful cardiometabolic variables increased with TG/HDL ratio quartiles. The adjusted baPWV (SEs) significantly increased with TG/HDL quartiles: Q1 = 1412 (22.1), Q2 = 1469 (21.4), Q3 = 1482 (21.0), and Q4 = 1505 (21.6) cm/s after adjusting for age, body mass index (BMI), and systolic blood pressure. The OR (95% CI) of the highest TG/HDL ratio quartile as compared to the lowest TG/HDL ratio quartile for high PWV was 2.77 (1.16-6.63) after adjusting for age, BMI, smoking status, regular exercise, mean arterial pressure, fasting plasma glucose, total cholesterol level, hypertension, log-transformed C-reactive protein, and the use of antihypertensive and lipid-lowering drugs. The TG/HDL ratio was positively and independently associated with arterial stiffness in postmenopausal Korean women.
