Abstract
Rising temperatures and intensified agricultural practices have heightened heat stress (HS)-related challenges in poultry farming, notably heat-induced sudden death in chickens. Wenchang chickens, recognized for their heat resistance, have emerged as the potential candidates for improving the economic efficiency of poultry farming. The adrenal gland plays a crucial role in preventing HS-induced heart failure sudden death by secreting hormones. However, little is known about the damage to and resilience of Wenchang chicken adrenal glands during HS. In this study, 34 healthy Wenchang chickens with similar weights were selected for formal experimentation, with 10 as the control group (Con). Following a single exposure to acute HS of 42 ± 1°C and 65% relative humidity for 5 h, 15 deceased individuals formed the HS death (HSD) group, and 9 survived comprised the HS survival (HSS) group. ELISA revealed significant higher (P < 0.05) levels of COR and NE in the HSS and the lowest levels of CORT and EPI in the HSD. Histopathological analysis indicated major degeneration in HSS cortical and chromaffin cells and extensive cell necrosis (nuclear pyknosis) in HSD. Proteomic analysis identified 572 DEPs in HSD vs. Con and 191 DEPs in HSS vs. Con. Bioinformatics highlighted ER protein processing, especially ERAD as a key pathway for heat stress resistance (HSR) in the adrenal gland, with HSPH1, DNAJA1, HSP90AA1, HSPA8 and HERPUD1 identified as regulating key molecules. Western blotting validated significantly higher (P < 0.01) protein levels in both HSS and HSD compared to the Con. Immunohistochemical staining showed increased cytoplasmic HSPH1-positive signal intensity under HS and enhanced HSP90AA1 nuclear signals, strongest in HSS. In summary, HS induces pathological damage in Wenchang chicken adrenal glands, affecting hormone secretion, and various heat shock proteins play crucial roles in cellular resistance. These results elucidate the biological basis of HSR in Wenchang chickens from the perspective of the adrenal gland and provide necessary research foundations for enhancing economic performance of various broilers in high-heat environments and screening drugs for HS treatment.

Abstract
The wide distribution and diverse varieties of chickens make them important models for studying genetic adaptation. The aim of this study was to identify genes that alter heat adaptation in commercial chicken breeds by comparing genetic differences between tropical and cold-resistant chickens. We analyzed whole-genome resequencing data of 186 chickens across various regions in Asia, including the following breeds: Bian chickens (B), Dagu chickens (DG), Beijing-You chickens (BY), and Gallus gallus jabouillei from China; Gallus gallus murghi from India; Vietnam native chickens (VN); Thailand native chickens (TN) and Gallus gallus spadiceus from Thailand; and Indonesia native chickens (IN), Gallus gallus gallus, and Gallus gallus bankiva from Indonesia. In total, 5,454,765 SNPs were identified for further analyses. Population genetic structure analysis revealed that each local chicken breed had undergone independent evolution. Additionally, when K = 5, B, BY, and DG chickens shared a common ancestor and exhibited high levels of inbreeding, suggesting that northern cold-resistant chickens are likely the result of artificial selection. In contrast, the runs of homozygosity (ROH) and the ROH-based genomic inbreeding coefficient (FROH) results for IN, TN, and VN chickens showed low levels of inbreeding. Low population differentiation index values indicated low differentiation levels, suggesting low genetic diversity in tropical chickens, implying increased vulnerability to environmental changes, decreased adaptability, and disease resistance. Whole-genome selection sweep analysis revealed 69 candidate genes, including LGR4, G6PC, and NBR1, between tropical and cold-resistant chickens. The genes were further subjected to GO and KEGG enrichment analyses, revealing that most of the genes were primarily enriched in biological synthesis processes, metabolic processes, central nervous system development, ion transmembrane transport, and the Wnt signaling pathway. Our study identified heat adaptation genes and their functions in chickens that primarily affect chickens in high-temperature environments through metabolic pathways. These heat-resistance genes provide a theoretical basis for improving the heat-adaptation capacity of commercial chicken breeds.

Abstract
Heat shock protein 90 (HSP90) has a recognized anti-heat stress injury effect, but its function and corresponding molecular mechanism in heat-stressed hepatocytes are not fully understood, especially in tropical animals. In the present study, we identified several key factors affecting resistance to injury liver tissues from heat-stressed Wenchang chickens (a typical tropical species), such as HSP90, cellular pyroptosis and mitophagy. Heat stress upregulated the NLRP3/Caspase-1/GSDMD-N-mediated cellular pyroptosis pathway and the Pink1/Parkin-mediated mitophagy pathway in chicken hepatocytes, accompanied by the upregulation of HSP90. We also found that HSP90 overexpression significantly reduced heat stress-induced hepatocyte pyroptosis and enhanced mitophagy in primary hepatocytes from Wenchang chickens (PHWCs). HSP90 knockdown significantly increased heat stress-induced hepatocyte pyroptosis and decreased mitophagy in PHWCs. Interestingly, we performed immunoprecipitation and immunofluorescence colocalization and found that HSP90 and Pink1 can interact and directly regulate the level of mitophagy in PHWCs. Our results suggest that HSP90, which regulates Pink1, is an important factor in mitophagy that attenuates heat stress injury by inhibiting cellular pyroptosis.

Abstract
Heat stress induces mitochondrial dysfunction, thereby impeding skeletal muscle development and significantly impacting the economic efficiency of poultry production. This study aimed to investigate the effects of embryo thermal manipulation (TM, 41.5°C, 65% RH, 3 h/d during 16-18th embryonic age) on the mitochondrial function of the pectoralis major (PM) in broiler chickens exposed to thermoneutral (24 ± 1°C, 60% RH) or cyclic heat stress (35 ± 1°C, 60% RH, 12 h/d) from day 22 to 28, and to explore potential mechanisms involving transient receptor potential V2 (TRPV2). Additionally, in vitro experiments were conducted to assess the regulatory effects of TRPV2 pharmacological activation and inhibition on mitochondrial function in primary myotubes. The results revealed that TM had no discernible effect on the body weight and feed intake of broiler chickens under heat stress conditions (P > 0.05). However, it did delay the increase in rectal temperature and accelerate the decrease in serum T3 levels (P < 0.05). Furthermore, TM promoted the development of PM muscle fibers, significantly increasing myofiber diameter and cross-sectional area (P < 0.05). Under heat stress conditions, TM significantly upregulated the expression of mitochondrial electron transport chain (ETC) genes and TRPV2 in broiler PM muscle (P < 0.05), with a clear positive correlation observed between the two (P < 0.05). In vitro, pharmacological activation of TRPV2 not only increased its own expression but also enhanced mitochondrial ETC genes expression and oxidative phosphorylation function by upregulating intracellular calcium ion levels (P < 0.05). Conversely, TRPV2 inhibition had the opposite effect. Overall, this study underscores the potential of prenatal thermal manipulation in regulating postnatal broiler skeletal muscle development and mitochondrial function through the modulation of TRPV2 expression.

Abstract
This study investigated the effect of neonatal α-ketoglutaric acid (AKG) gavage feeding on broilers. The first experiment was conducted to determine the effect of AKG on day-old broilers. A total of seventy-two-day-old Ross 308 broiler chicks were divided into four treatment groups: (i) Two groups of chicks with gavage feeding of 0.6 mL of distilled water (DDW) for four consecutive days (CON); (ii) chicks fed with 0.6 mL of 0.1% AKG dissolved in DDW on the day of hatch (AL) followed by 0.2%, 0.3%, and 0.4% for three consecutive days; and (iii) chicks fed with 0.6 mL of 0.2% AKG dissolved in DDW on the day of hatch (AH) followed by 0.4%, 0.6%, and 0.8% for three consecutive days. Twenty-four hours after the first gavage feeding, six birds per treatment were slaughtered to study the organ development. Chicks fed with AKG showed higher absolute (p = 0.015) and relative (p = 0.037) weights of the gizzard. The AH group had higher absolute (p = 0.012) and relative (p = 0.035) heart weights. The second experiment was carried out to determine the effect of AKG on 15-day-old broilers under acute heat stress (AHS) for 3.5 h at 33 ± 1 °C. Forty-eight birds (12 per treatment) were raised until 15 days of age, divided into four treatments with equal numbers (n = 12), and given one of the following four treatments: (i) CON group reared at standard temperature (25 ± 1 °C) (CON-NT); (ii) CON group subjected to AHS (33 ± 1 °C) for 3.5 h (CON-HT); (iii) AL group subjected to AHS (33 ± 1 °C) for 3.5 h (AL-HT); and (iv) AH group subjected to AHS (33 ± 1 °C) for 3.5 h (AH-HT). There was a significant reduction in the change in BW (ΔBW, p = 0.005), an increase in the final rectal temperature (RTf) (p = 0.001), and a decreased final body weight (BWf) for all the treatments under AHS. Further, AHS led to an increased expression of hepatic heat shock protein (HSP)70 (p = 0.009), nicotinamide adenine dinucleotide phosphate hydrogen oxidase (NOX)1 (p = 0.006), and NOX4 (p = 0.001), while nuclear factor erythroid 2-related factor (NRF2), superoxide dismutase (SOD), catalase (CAT), and glutathione peroxidase 1 (GPX1) remained significantly unaffected. Hepatic expression of HSP90 decreased in the AL-HT treatment as compared to CON-HT (p = 0.008). Plasma antioxidant status measured by malondialdehyde (MDA) concentration and antioxidant balance (AB) improved linearly (p = 0.001) as the concentration of AKG increased. Neonatal gavage feeding of AKG could potentially alleviate heat stress in broilers by enhancing plasma antioxidant levels and modulating HSP90 expression in the liver.

Abstract
Amidst rising global temperatures, chronic heat stress (CHS) is increasingly problematic for the poultry industry. While mammalian CHS responses are well-studied, avian-specific research is lacking. This study uses in-depth transcriptome sequencing to evaluate the pulmonary response of Cherry Valley ducks to CHS at ambient temperatures of 20°C and a heat-stressed 29°C. We detailed the CHS-induced gene expression changes, encompassing mRNAs, lncRNAs, and miRNAs. Through protein-protein interaction network analysis, we identified central genes involved in the heat stress response-TLR7, IGF1, MAP3K1, CIITA, LCP2, PRKCB, and PLCB2. Subsequent functional enrichment analysis of the differentially expressed genes and RNA targets revealed significant engagement in immune responses and regulatory processes. KEGG pathway analysis underscored crucial immune pathways, specifically those related to intestinal IgA production and Toll-like receptor signaling, as well as Salmonella infection and calcium signaling pathways. Importantly, we determined six miRNAs-miR-146, miR-217, miR-29a-3p, miR-10926, miR-146b-5p, and miR-17-1-3p-as potential key regulators within the ceRNA network. These findings enhance our comprehension of the physiological adaptation of ducks to CHS and may provide a foundation for developing strategies to improve duck production under thermal stress.

Abstract
This study evaluated the effect of cobiotic (CO) composed of organic fructans powder of Agave tequilana and turmeric powder of Curcuma longa L. as an alternative of antibiotic growth promoters (AGPs) on growth performance, blood parameters, intestinal pH, oxidative stress, and cytokines serum levels of broiler chickens. A total of 135 one-day-old Ross 308 broilers distributed to five experimental groups, which included starter or finisher standard diets without AGPs (CON), CON + 0.25 COLI-ZIN g/kg feed (AGP), CON + 0.1 g Agave fructans/kg feed (AF), CON + 0.5 g turmeric powder/kg feed (TP) and CON + 0.1 g AF + 0.5 g TP /kg feed (CO), for 49 days. AF followed by TP, decreased feed intake, obtaining the best FCR. AGP increased the heterophil-lymphocyte ratio compared to other groups. CO significantly decreased the pH of the cecal content. AF increased IL-10 levels, while TP decreased it. AF decreased the IL-1β levels. The present study showed that including a cobiotic based on AF and TP or components separately in a broilers diet improved growth performance, modified intestinal and cecum pH, and stimulated the immune system, which suggests CO as a safe alternative to AGP.

Abstract
Oxidative stress contributes to heat stress (HS)-mediated alterations in skeletal muscle; however, the extent to which biological sex mediates oxidative stress during HS remains unknown. We hypothesized muscle from males would be more resistant to oxidative stress caused by HS than muscle from females. To address this, male and female pigs were housed in thermoneutral conditions (TN; 20.8 ± 1.6°C; 62.0 ± 4.7% relative humidity; n = 8/sex) or subjected to HS (39.4 ± 0.6°C; 33.7 ± 6.3% relative humidity) for 1 (HS1; n = 8/sex) or 7 days (HS7; n = 8/sex) followed by collection of the oxidative portion of the semitendinosus. Although HS increased muscle temperature, by 7 days, muscle from heat-stressed females was cooler than muscle from heat-stressed males (0.3°C; P < 0.05). Relative protein abundance of 4-hydroxynonenal (4-HNE)-modified proteins increased in HS1 females compared with TN (P = 0.05). Furthermore, malondialdehyde (MDA)-modified proteins and 8-hydroxy-2'-deoxyguanosine (8-OHdG) concentration, a DNA damage marker, was increased in HS7 females compared with TN females (P = 0.05). Enzymatic activities of catalase and superoxide dismutase (SOD) remained similar between groups; however, glutathione peroxidase (GPX) activity decreased in HS7 females compared with TN and HS1 females (P ≤ 0.03) and HS7 males (P = 0.02). Notably, HS increased skeletal muscle Ca2+ deposition (P = 0.05) and was greater in HS1 females compared with TN females (P < 0.05). Heat stress increased sarco(endo)plasmic reticulum Ca2+ ATPase (SERCA)2a protein abundance (P < 0.01); however, Ca2+ ATPase activity remained similar between groups. Overall, despite having lower muscle temperature, muscle from heat-stressed females had increased markers of oxidative stress and calcium deposition than muscle from males following identical environmental exposure.NEW & NOTEWORTHY Heat stress is a global threat to human health and agricultural production. We demonstrated that following 7 days of heat stress, skeletal muscle from females was more susceptible to oxidative stress than muscle from males in a porcine model, despite cooler muscle temperatures. The vulnerability to heat stress-induced oxidative stress in females may be driven, at least in part, by decreased antioxidant capacity and calcium dysregulation.

Abstract
BACKGROUND This work aimed to investigate the potential benefits of administering Prevotella and its primary metabolite succinate on performance, hepatic lipid accumulation and gut microbiota in laying hens. RESULTS One hundred and fifty 58-week-old Hyline Brown laying hens, with laying rate below 80% and plasma triglyceride (TG) exceeding 5 mmol/L, were used in this study. The hens were randomly allocated into 5 groups and subjected to one of the following treatments: fed with a basal diet (negative control, NC), oral gavage of 3 mL/hen saline every other day (positive control, PC), gavage of 3 mL/hen Prevotella melaninogenica (107 CFU/mL, PM) or 3 mL/hen Prevotella copri (107 CFU/mL, P. copri) every other day, and basal diet supplemented with 0.25% sodium succinate (Succinate). The results showed that PM and P. copri treatments significantly improved laying rate compared to the PC (P < 0.05). The amount of lipid droplet was notably decreased by PM, P. copri, and Succinate treatments at week 4 and decreased by P. copri at week 8 (P < 0.05). Correspondingly, the plasma TG level in Succinate group was lower than that of PC (P < 0.05). Hepatic TG content, however, was not significantly influenced at week 4 and 8 (P > 0.05). PM treatment increased (P < 0.05) the mRNA levels of genes PGC-1β and APB-5B at week 4, and ACC and CPT-1 at week 8. The results indicated enhanced antioxidant activities at week 8, as evidenced by reduced hepatic malondialdehyde (MDA) level and improved antioxidant enzymes activities in PM and Succinate groups (P < 0.05). Supplementing with Prevotella or succinate can alter the cecal microbiota. Specifically, the abundance of Prevotella in the Succinate group was significantly higher than that in the other 4 groups at the family and genus levels (P < 0.05). CONCLUSIONS Oral intake of Prevotella and dietary supplementation of succinate can ameliorate lipid metabolism of laying hens. The beneficial effect of Prevotella is consistent across different species. The finding highlights that succinate, the primary metabolite of Prevotella, represents a more feasible feed additive for alleviating fatty liver in laying hens.

Abstract
To assess the impact of supplementing betaine (BT) under heat stress (HS) conditions on broiler performance and intestinal health from 21 to 42 days of age, a total of 150 male Ross 308 broilers were indiscriminately allotted to 3 treatments with 10 replications of 5 birds each. The control (CON) group was given a basal ration and accommodated at a thermoneutral condition (22 ± 1 °C), whereas the HS and HS + BT groups were raised under cyclic HS (33 ± 1 °C for 8 h and 22 ± 1 °C for 16 h per day) and received the basal ration without or with 1000 mg/kg BT, respectively. The HS reduced average daily gain (ADG); average daily feed intake; villus height (VH); VH to crypt depth (CD) ratio (VCR); activities of trypsin, lipase, glutathione peroxidase (GPX), and catalase; and enumeration of Lactobacillus and Bifidobacterium (P < 0.05) and augmented feed conversion ratio (FCR), CD, malondialdehyde (MDA) accumulation, and enumeration of Escherichia coli, Clostridium, and coliforms (P < 0.05). Conversely, BT supplementation heightened ADG, VH, VCR, trypsin activity, GPX activity, and populations of Lactobacillus and Bifidobacterium (P < 0.05) and lowered FCR, MDA accumulation, and Clostridium population (P < 0.05). Furthermore, the FCR value, trypsin and GPX activities, MDA content, and Bifidobacterium and Clostridium populations in the HS + BT group were nearly equivalent to those in the CON group. To conclude, feeding BT under HS conditions could improve broiler performance through improving intestinal health by specifically mitigating oxidative damage and enhancing the colonization of beneficial bacteria.

Abstract
A study was designed to evaluate the effect of Moringa oleifera, Phyllanthus amarus and Viscum album leaf meal as herbal inclusions to alleviate the detrimental outcomes of heat stress in weaned female rabbits. Forty (40) weaned rabbit does (527.99 ± 10.35 g; 28 days old) were randomly allotted to four dietary groups consisting of Diet 1(control diet; without leaf meal), Diets 2 (supplemented with 10% V. album); 3 (supplemented with 10% M. oleifera) and 4 (supplemented with 10% P. amarus) in an 84 days trial at the peak of heat stress in Southwest Nigeria. At the end of the trial, blood samples were collected to assess physiological responses and oxidative status of the rabbit does. The results obtained revealed that rabbit does were exposed to heat stress; rabbit does fed control diet had higher leucocyte and neutrophil/lymphocyte ratio compared to rabbit does fed on herbal inclusions. The herbal inclusions enhanced oxidative stability of rabbit does by lowering lipid peroxidation and enhancing antioxidant activities during heat stress conditions. Rabbit does fed control-based diet had significantly higher heat shock protein 70, leptin and adiponectin compared to rabbit does on M. oleifera, P. amarus and V. album supplemented diets. The herbal inclusions tend to suppress proinflammatory cytokines in rabbit does during heat stress condition. In conclusion, the herbal inclusions suppress inflammation, adipokines and promotes oxidative stability of rabbit does exposed to heat stress conditions.

Abstract
The mitochondrial quality control system is crucial in maintaining cellular homeostasis during environmental stress. Granulosa cells are the main cells secreting steroid hormones, and mitochondria are the key organelles for steroid hormone synthesis. The impact of the mitochondrial quality control system on granulosa cells' steroid hormone synthesis and survival under heat stress is still unclear. Here, we showed that acute heat stress induces mitochondrial damage and significantly increases the number of mitophagy-like vesicles in the cytoplasm of duck ovary granulosa cells at the ultra-structural level. Meanwhile, we also found heat stress significantly increased mitochondrial fission and mitophagy-related protein expression levels both in vivo and in vitro. Furthermore, by confocal fluorescence analysis, we discovered that LC3 was distributed spot-like manner near the nucleus in the heat treatment group, and the LC3 spots and lysosomes were colocalized with Mito-Tracker in the heat treatment group. We further detected the mitophagy-related protein in the cytoplasm and mitochondria, respectively. Results showed that the PINK1 protein was significantly increased both in cytoplasm and mitochondria, while the LC3-Ⅱ/LC3-Ⅰ ratio increase only occurred in mitochondrial. In addition, the autophagy protein induced by acute heat treatment was effectively inhibited by the mitophagy inhibitor CysA. Finally, we demonstrated that the alteration of cellular mitophagy by siRNA interference with Drp1 and PINK1 inhibited the steroid synthesis of granulosa cells and increased cell apoptosis. Study provides strong evidence that the Drp1 regulated PINK1-dependent mitophagy pathway protects follicular granulosa cells from acute heat stress-induced injury.

Abstract
Chronic heat stress has detrimental effects on the growth performance of broilers, and the potential mechanism is under exploration. In this study, the protein carbonyl modification was introduced to glycolytic enzymes to evaluate its relationship with the growth performance of heat-stressed (HS) broilers. A total of 144 male 28-day-old broilers were assigned to 3 treatments: the normal control group (NC, raised at 22°C with free access to feed and water), the HS group (raised at 32°C with free access to feed and water), and the pair-fed group (PF, raised at 22°C with an amount of feed equal to that consumed by the HS group on a previous day). Results showed that heat stress decreased the average daily growth, increased the feed-to-gain ratio (F/G), decreased breast muscle rate, and increased abdominal fat rate compared with the NC and PF groups (P < 0.05). Higher cloacal temperature and serum creatine kinase activity were found in the HS group than those of the NC and PF groups (P < 0.05). Heat stress increased the contents of carbonyl, advanced glycation end-products, malonaldehyde, and the activities of catalase, glutathione peroxidase, and total antioxidant capacity compared with the NC and PF groups (P < 0.05). Heat stress increased the contents of glucose and lactate, declined the glycogen content, and lowered the relative protein expressions of pyruvate kinase muscle type, lactate dehydrogenase A type (LDHA), and citrate synthase compared to those of the NC group (P < 0.05). In contrast to the NC and PF groups, heat stress intensified the carbonylation levels of phosphoglucomutase 1, triosephosphate isomerase 1, β-enolase, and LDHA, which were positively correlated with the F/G (P < 0.05). These findings demonstrate that heat stress depresses growth performance on account of oxidative stress and glycolysis disorders. It further increases the carbonylation of glycolytic enzymes, which potentially correlates with the F/G by disturbing the mode of energy supply of broilers.

Abstract
Over the past several years, the Muzaffarpur district of Bihar (India) has witnessed recurrent outbreaks of acute encephalitis illness of unknown etiology, called acute encephalitis syndrome (AES) among young children, especially during the peak-summer season. Pesticide exposure, viral encephalitis, and litchi toxin intake have all been postulated as potential sources of the ailment. However, no conclusive etiology for AES has been identified in the affected children. During recent rounds of the outbreak, metabolic abnormalities have been documented in these children, and a direct correlation was observed between higher environmental temperature during the peak-summer month and AES caseload. The clinical and metabolic profiles of these children suggested the possible involvement of mitochondrial dysfunction during heat stress as one of the several contributory factors leading to multisystem metabolic derangement. The present study observed that mitochondrial function parameters such as cell death, mitochondrial membrane potential, oxidative stress, and mitochondrial pathway-related gene expression in peripheral blood mononuclear cells (PBMCs) isolated from children were affected in peak-summer when compared to post-summer months. Similar observations of mitochondrial function parameters along with impaired bioenergetic parameters were demonstrated in the heat-exposed model of PBMCs isolated from healthy adult individuals. In conclusion, the results suggested that there is an association of transient mitochondrial dysfunction when exposed to sustained heat during the summer months. One may consider mitochondrial dysfunction as one of the important factors leading to an outbreak of AES among the children from affected regions though this needs to be substantiated with further studies.

Abstract
The aim of this study was to investigate the effect of dietary tryptophan (Trp) supplementation on serum biochemical indices, antioxidant indices, cytokine levels, mitochondrial biosynthesis, and mitochondrial morphology of heat-stressed broilers. A total of 180 female Arbor Acres broilers (18-day-old) were randomly allocated into three groups with six replicates of 10 broilers each. Broilers in thermoneutral (TN) (23 ± 1 °C) group were fed a basal diet; the other two groups were fed the basal diet supplemented with 0 or 0.18% Trp under heat stress (HS) (34 ± 1 °C for 8 h/day (h/day) and 23 ± 1°C for the remaining time) condition. The heat stress lasted for 21 days (days 21 to 42). The results indicated that heat stress reduced serum total protein content (TP) and decreased the activities of serum superoxide dismutase (SOD) and total antioxidant capacity (T-AOC), but increased the levels of serum uric acid (UA), interleukin (IL)-1β, IL-6, and IL-18 (P < 0.05) compared to the TN group. However, dietary supplementation with 0.18% Trp enhanced serum TP content, glutathione peroxidase (GSH-Px), SOD, catalase (CAT) activities, and T-AOC; decreased aspartate aminotransferase (AST) activities (P < 0.05); and lowered serum IL-1β, IL-6, IL-18 contents (P < 0.05). Meanwhile, heat stress exposure downregulated the mRNA expression of mitochondrial transcription factor A (TFAM), cytochrome c oxidase subunit 1 (COX1), and cytochrome c oxidase subunit 5A (COX5A) in ileum (P < 0.05) as compared to the TN group. Dietary Trp supplementation enhanced the mitochondrial membrane potential (MMP) and the mRNA expression of TFAM, COX1 in ileum mucosa (P < 0.05) and ameliorated the damage of mitochondrial structure. Collectively, dietary supplementation with Trp could improve antioxidant capacity and mitochondrial structure and regulate mitochondrial function-related genes and decrease inflammatory response in heat-stressed broilers. Dietary Trp supplementation might be an effective nutritional strategy to protect against heat stress impairment.

Abstract
This experiment determined the effects of different HS models and pair-feeding (PF) on nutrient digestibility and markers of stress, inflammation, and metabolism in broilers. Birds (720 total) were allocated into 12 environmentally controlled chambers and reared under thermoneutral conditions until 20 d. Until 41 d birds were exposed to 4 treatments, including: thermoneutral at 24°C (TN-al), daily cyclic HS (12 h at 24 and 12 h at 35°C; cyHS), constant HS at 35°C (coHS), and PF birds maintained at 24°C and fed to equalize FI with coHS birds (TN-coPF). At d 41, ileal digesta were collected to determine nutrient apparent ileal digestibility (AID). Blood, liver, and breast tissues were collected from 8 birds per treatment to determine the mRNA expression of stress, inflammation, and metabolism markers. An additional 8 TN-al birds were sampled after acute HS exposure at 35°C for 4 h (aHS), and 8 cyHS birds were sampled either right before or 4 h after HS initiation. Data were analyzed by 1-way ANOVA and means were separated using Tukey's HSD test. Compared with TN-al birds, AID of nitrogen and ether extract were reduced in coHS birds, and both cyHS and coHS reduced (P < 0.05) AID of total essential amino acids. TNFα and SOD2 expression were increased (P < 0.05) under aHS, coHS, and TN-coPF conditions. IL6 and HSP70 were increased (P < 0.05) under coHS and aHS, respectively. Expression of lipogenic enzymes ACCα and FASN were reduced by coHS and TN-coPF, while coHS increased the lipolytic enzyme ATGL (P < 0.05). IGF1 was lowered in coHS birds, and p70S6K and MyoG were reduced under coHS and TN-coPF (P < 0.05). Interestingly, MuRF1 and MAFbx were increased (P < 0.05) under coHS only. Overall, these results indicate that coHS has a greater impact on nutrient digestibility and metabolism than aHS and cyHS. Interestingly, increased protein degradation during HS appears to be mostly driven by HS per se and not the reduced FI.

Abstract
The dairy industry depends upon the cow's successful lactation for economic profitability. Heat stress compromises the economic sustainability of the dairy industry by reducing milk production and increasing the risk of metabolic and pathogenic disease. Heat stress alters metabolic adaptations, such as nutrient mobilization and partitioning, that support the energetic demands of lactation. Metabolically inflexible cows are unable to enlist the necessary homeorhetic shifts that provide the needed nutrients and energy for milk synthesis, thereby impairing lactation performance. Mitochondria provide the energetic foundation that enable a myriad of metabolically demanding processes, such as lactation. Changes in an animal's energy requirements are met at the cellular level through alterations in mitochondrial density and bioenergetic capacity. Mitochondria also act as central stress modulators and coordinate tissues' energetic responses to stress by integrating endocrine signals, through mito-nuclear communication, into the cellular stress response. In vitro heat insults affect mitochondria through a compromise in mitochondrial integrity, which is linked to a decrease in mitochondrial function. However, limited evidence exists linking the in vivo metabolic effects of heat stress with parameters of mitochondrial behavior and function in lactating animals. This review summarizes the literature describing the cellular and subcellular effects of heat stress, with a focus on the effect of heat stress on mitochondrial bioenergetics and cellular dysfunction in livestock. Implications for lactation performance and metabolic health are also discussed.

Abstract
Heat stress (HS) in poultry husbandry is an important stressor and with increasing global temperatures its importance will increase. The negative effects of stress on the quality and quantity of poultry production are described in a range of research studies. However, a lack of attention is devoted to the impacts of HS on individual chicken immune cells and whole lymphoid tissue in birds. Oxidative stress and increased inflammation are accompanying processes of HS, but with deleterious effects on the whole organism. They play a key role in the inflammation and oxidative stress of the chicken immune system. There are a range of strategies that can help mitigate the adverse effects of HS in poultry. Phytochemicals are well studied and some of them report promising results to mitigate oxidative stress and inflammation, a major consequence of HS. Current studies revealed that mitigating these two main impacts of HS will be a key factor in solving the problem of increasing temperatures in poultry production. Improved function of the chicken immune system is another benefit of using phytochemicals in poultry due to the importance of poultry health management in today's post pandemic world. Based on the current literature, baicalin and baicalein have proven to have strong anti-inflammatory and antioxidative effects in mammalian and avian models. Taken together, this review is dedicated to collecting the literature about the known effects of HS on chicken immune cells and lymphoid tissue. The second part of the review is dedicated to the potential use of baicalin and baicalein in poultry to mitigate the negative impacts of HS on poultry production.

Abstract
INTRODUCTION Consuming intracellular osmolytes, like betaine (BET), may attenuate symptoms of heat stress. The purpose of this study was to examine the effects of BET supplementation on fluid balance and heat tolerance after a 7-day loading period and during passive heat exposure. METHODS A double-blind, placebo controlled, crossover study compared BET or placebo consumption (50 mg·kg-1 , twice daily) for 7 days in young, recreationally active men (N = 11). RESULTS During the loading period, no significant interactions were found for any marker of fluid balance between or within conditions. During heat exposure, significant time effects but no condition x time interactions, were found for plasma characteristics (i.e., volume, osmolality, sodium, albumin, and total protein). Plasma volume was significantly increased by min 30 in both conditions (PLA: +6.9. ± 5.0%, BET: +10.2 ± 7.4%) and remained elevated for the remainder of the experimental trial, but was not significantly different between conditions. After 60 min of passive heat exposure, both conditions experienced a similar increase in core temperature (PLA: +0.32 ± 0.22°C, BET: +0.31 ± 0.21°C; p = 0.912). CONCLUSIONS Supplemental BET did not improve markers of fluid balance or heat tolerance during 7 days of loading or during passive heat exposure.

Abstract
Spray-dried animal plasma (SDAP) is a functional ingredient derived from healthy animal blood, used as a nutritional additive in livestock and pet nutrition. SDAP is rich in macronutrients, micronutrients, and bioactive compounds such as immunoglobulins, albumin, growth factors, peptides, transferrin, and enzymes. This review focuses on the chemical composition of SDAP from porcine, bovine, and poultry sources, including protein quality and mineral profile. SDAP enhances performance and health in monogastric farm animals, aquaculture, and pets. It promotes growth rates and feed intake due to its high digestibility and superior amino acid profile compared to other protein sources. In pigs, SDAP's positive effects stem from tissue-specific actions in the gastrointestinal tract, impacting digestion, immunity, and barrier function. For poultry, SDAP shows promise as a substitute for antibiotic growth promoters, particularly in chick starter diets. SDAP contains functional proteins that regulate immune response, enhance intestinal health, and aid in stress conditions. It is also used as a binder in pet food, providing high protein content and other desirable properties. SDAP meets the dietary requirements of carnivorous pets, appealing to owners seeking animal-derived protein sources. Additionally, SDAP may help prevent cognitive impairment in senior dogs and cats.

BACKGROUND Heat stress in laying hens negatively affects egg production and shell quality by disrupting the homeostasis of plasma calcium and phosphorus levels. Although the kidney plays an important role in calcium and phosphorus homeostasis, evidence regarding the effect of heat stress on renal injury in laying hens is yet to be elucidated. Therefore, the aim of this study was to evaluate the effects of chronic heat stress on renal damage in hens during laying periods. METHODS A total of 16 white-leghorn laying hens (32 weeks old) were randomly assigned to two groups (n = 8). One group was exposed to chronic heat stress (33 °C for 4 weeks), whereas the other group was maintained at 24 °C. RESULTS Chronic heat exposure significantly increased plasma creatinine and decreased plasma albumin levels (P < 0.05). Heat exposure also increased renal fibrosis and the transcription levels of fibrosis-related genes (COLA1A1, αSMA, and TGF-β) in the kidney. These results suggest that renal failure and fibrosis were induced by chronic heat exposure in laying hens. In addition, chronic heat exposure decreased ATP levels and mitochondrial DNA copy number (mtDNA-CN) in renal tissue, suggesting that renal mitochondrial dysfunction occurs under conditions of heat stress. Damaged mitochondria leak mtDNAs into the cytosol and mtDNA leakage may activate the cyclic GMP-AMP synthase (cGAS) stimulator of interferon genes (STING) signaling pathway. Our results showed that chronic heat exposure activated the cGAS-STING pathway as indicated by increased expression of MDA5, STING, IRF7, MAVS, and NF-κB levels. Furthermore, the expression of pro-inflammatory cytokines (IL-12) and chemokines (CCL4 and CCL20) was upregulated in heat-stressed hens. CONCLUSIONS These results suggest that chronic heat exposure induces renal fibrosis and mitochondrial damage in laying hens. Mitochondrial damage by heat stress may activate the mtDNA-cGAS-STING signaling and cause subsequent inflammation, which contributes to the progression of renal fibrosis and dysfunction.

Abstract
This study was conducted to explore the influences of carbonyl modification on proteins within the breast muscle of heat-stressed broilers and their correlations to decreased meat quality. The results showed that birds that suffered from heat stress had higher lightness, drip loss, shear force value, and hardness, and lower redness and springiness of breast meat than those under normal control and pair fed treatments. Proteomic analysis identified a total of 921 differentially carbonylated sites, which were allocated to 419 proteins. The modified sites included Lys, Pro, Arg, Trp, Cys, His, and Met. Seven motif sequences were detected, where five motifs neighbored Lys and two neighbored Pro. The differentially carbonylated proteins in heat-stressed birds mainly participated in the glycolytic process, collagen fibril organization, calcium homeostasis, and apoptosis. This study provided a unique landscape of the muscular carbonyl modification rule and unraveled the potential impact of carbonylated protein on meat quality.

Abstract
Understanding the consequences of heat exposure on mitochondrial function is crucial as mitochondria lie at the core of metabolic processes, also affecting population dynamics. In adults, mitochondrial metabolism varies with temperature but can also depend on thermal conditions experienced during development. We exposed zebra finches to two alternative heat treatments during early development: "constant", maintained birds at ambient 35 °C from parental pair formation to fledglings' independence, while "periodic" heated broods at 40 °C, 6 h daily at nestling stage. Two years later, we acclimated birds from both experiments at 25 °C for 21 days, before exposing them to artificial heat (40 °C, 5 h daily for 10 days). After both conditions, we measured red blood cells' mitochondrial metabolism using a high-resolution respirometer. We found significantly decreased mitochondrial metabolism for Routine, Oxidative Phosphorylation (OxPhos) and Electron Transport System maximum capacity (ETS) after the heat treatments. In addition, the birds exposed to "constant" heat in early life showed lower oxygen consumption at the Proton Leak (Leak) stage after the heat treatment as adults. Females showed higher mitochondrial respiration for Routine, ETS and Leak independent of the treatments, while this pattern was reversed for OxPhos coupling efficiency (OxCE). Our results show that short-term acclimation involved reduced mitochondrial respiration, and that the reaction of adult birds to heat depends on the intensity, pattern and duration of temperature conditions experienced at early-life stages. Our study provides insight into the complexity underlying variation in mitochondrial metabolism and raises questions on the adaptive value of long-lasting physiological adjustments triggered by the early-life thermal environment.

Abstract
Heatstroke, which is associated with circulatory failure and multiple organ dysfunction, is a heat stress-induced life-threatening condition characterized by a raised core body temperature and central nervous system dysfunction. As global warming continues to worsen, heatstroke is expected to become the leading cause of death globally. Despite the severity of this condition, the detailed mechanisms that underlie the pathogenesis of heatstroke still remain largely unknown. Z-DNA-binding protein 1 (ZBP1), also referred to as DNA-dependent activator of IFN-regulatory factors (DAI) and DLM-1, was initially identified as a tumor-associated and interferon (IFN)-inducible protein, but has recently been reported to be a Z-nucleic acid sensor that regulates cell death and inflammation; however, its biological function is not yet fully understood. In the present study, a brief review of the main regulators is presented, in which the Z-nucleic acid sensor ZBP1 was identified to be a significant factor in regulating the pathological characteristics of heatstroke through ZBP1-dependent signaling. Thus, the lethal mechanism of heatstroke is revealed, in addition to a second function of ZBP1 other than as a nucleic acid sensor.

Abstract
In this study, chlorogenic acid (CGA) was injected into the amniotic cavity of chicken embryos to study the effects of in ovo feeding of CGA on the antioxidant capacity of postnatal broilers. On the 17th day of embryonic age, a total of 300 healthy broiler fertile eggs with similar weights were randomly subjected to five groups as follows; in ovo injection with 0.5 ml CGA at 4 mg/egg (4CGA) or 7 mg/egg (7CGA) or 10 mg/egg (10CGA), or sham-injection with saline (positive control, PC) or no injection (negative control, NC). Each group had six replicates of ten embryos. Six healthy chicks with similar body weights hatched from each replicate were selected and reared until heat stress treatment (35°C ± 1°C, 8 h/d) at 28-42 days of age. The results showed that there was no significant difference in the hatching rate between the groups (p > 0.05). After heat stress treatment, 4CGA group showed an improved intestinal morphology which was demonstrated by a higher villus height in the duodenum and a higher villus height/crypt depth ratio in the jejunum, compared with the NC group (p < 0.05). The antioxidant capacity of chickens was improved by in ovo feeding of CGA since 4CGA decreased the plasma content of malondialdehyde (MDA) (p < 0.05), whereas, it increased the superoxide dismutase (SOD), glutathione peroxidase (GPX), and catalase (CAT) activities compared with NC group (p < 0.05). Also, the MDA content of the different injection groups had a quadratic effect, with the 4CGA group having the lowest MDA content (P quadratic < 0.05). In the duodenum, 4CGA injection significantly increased the mRNA expressions of nuclear factor erythroid 2-related factor 2 (Nrf2), heme oxygenase 1 (H O -1), glutathione synthetase (GSS), and SOD1 compared to the NC and PC groups (p < 0.05). The mRNA expressions of glutathione reductase (GSR) and GPX7 were significantly increased in all CGA-treated groups compared with the PC group (p < 0.05), while the mRNA expression of CAT was significantly increased by 4CGA group than the NC group (p < 0.05). The mRNA expressions of epigenetic-related genes, ten eleven translocation 1 and 2 (Tet1 and Tet2), and DNA-methyltransferase 3 alpha (DNMT3A) in the duodenum of 4CGA injected group was significantly increased compared with the NC and PC groups (p < 0.05). The mRNA expressions of Nrf2, SOD1, and Tet2 showed a significant quadratic effects with the 4CGA group having the highest expression (P quadratic < 0.05). In conclusion, in ovo feeding of CGA alleviated heat stress-induced intestinal oxidative damage. Injection with CGA of 4 mg/egg is considered most effective due to its actions in improving intestinal antioxidant capacity, especially in the duodenum. The antioxidant effects of in ovo CGA on postnatal heat-stressed broilers may be related to its regulation of epigenetic mechanisms. Thus, this study provides technical knowledge to support the in ovo feeding of CGA to alleviate oxidative stress in postnatal heat-stressed broilers.

Abstract
Bile acids (BA), a series of hydroxylated steroids secreted by the liver, are involved in the digestion and absorption of dietary fats. In the present study, the effect of exogenous BAs on the performance and liver lipid metabolism of laying hens was investigated. Three hundred and sixty 50-wk-old Hy-line Brown hens were randomly allocated into three groups and subjected to one of the following treatments: fed with the basal diet (control, Con), the basal diet supplemented with 0.1 g/kg (0.1 g/kg BAs), or 0.2 g/kg (0.2 g/kg BAs) porcine BAs. Laying performance, egg quality, and blood parameters were measured during the 8-wk experimental period. The expression of genes related to hepatic lipid metabolism was determined at the end of experiment. The results showed that BAs treatments had no influence (P > 0.05) on laying rate, egg weight, and feed efficiency. BAs treatment, however, significantly decreased mortality of hens (P = 0.006). BAs treatment showed a transient negative influence on eggshell quality at week 4 but not at week 8. The yolk color on week 8 was increased by BAs treatments (P < 0.0001) compared to control. The duodenum index showed a tendency to be increased (P = 0.053) and jejunum index were increased (P = 0.007) by BAs treatment. Compared to control, BAs treatments decreased lipid droplet content (P < 0.0001) and TG content (P = 0.002) of liver. Fatty acid synthase activity was also decreased as an effect of BAs dietary supplementation. Compared to the control group, 0.1 g/kg BAs treatment increased (P < 0.05) the mRNA expression of genes Farnesoid X receptor (FXR) (P = 0.042), cytochrome P450 family 7 subfamily A member 1 (CYP7A1) (P = 0.002), and cytochrome P450 family 8 subfamily B member 1 (CYP8B1) (P = 0.017), fatty acid synthase (FAS) (P = 0.020), acetyl-CoA carboxylase (ACC) (P = 0.032), sterol regulatory element binding protein-1c (SREBP-1c) (P = 0.037), proliferator-activated receptor gamma (PPARγ) (P = 0.002), apolipoprotein B (APO-B) (P = 0.020), and very low density lipoprotein receptor (VLDLR) (P = 0.024). In conclusion, the addition of exogenous BAs reduces lipid accumulation in liver. BA supplementation reduces the mortality of hens and improves egg yolk color, with no unfavorable effect on laying performance. The result suggests that suppressed FAS activity is involved in the reduced hepatic lipid accumulation by BAs treatment.

Abstract
This study tested the hypothesis that glycine improves intestinal barrier function through regulating oxidative stress in broilers exposed to heat stress. A total of 300 twenty-one-day-old female Arbor Acres broilers (600 ± 2.5g) was randomly allocated to 5 treatments (6 replicate of 10 birds each). The 5 treatments were as follows: the control group (CON) was kept under thermoneutral condition (24 ± 1°C) and was fed a basal diet. Broilers fed a basal diet and reared under high ambient temperature (HT) were considered as the HT group (34 ± 1°C for 8 h/d). Broilers fed a basal diet supplemented with 0.5%, 1.0%, and 2.0% glycine and exposed to HT were regarded as the HT + glycine treatments. The results exhibited that heat stress reduced growth performance, serum total antioxidant capacity (T-AOC), and glutathione (GSH) concentration (P < 0.05); increased activity of serum catalase (CAT) and the contents of hydrogen peroxide (H2O2) and malondialdehyde (MDA) (P < 0.05). HT exposure led to downregulating the mRNA expression of NAD(P)H quinone dehydrogenase 1 (NQO1), Occludin, and zonula occludens-1 (ZO-1) (P < 0.05); enhanced the mRNA levels of Kelch-like ECH-associated protein 1 (Keap1), CAT, glutathione synthetase (GSS), and glutamate-cysteine ligase modifier subunit (GCLM) (P < 0.05); impaired the intestinal morphology (P < 0.05); and altered the diversity and community of gut microbiota (P < 0.05). The final body weight (FBW), ADFI, ADG, and gain-to-feed ratio (G: F) increased linearly or quadratically, and the antioxidant capacity was improved (P < 0.05) with glycine supplementation. Glycine treatment increased the villus height (VH), and villus height to crypt depth ratio (V/C) of the duodenum linearly or quadratically, and linearly increased the VH of jejunum and ileum. The mRNA expression of Occludin, and ZO-1 were increased linearly in the ileum mucosa of broilers subjected to HT. Collectively, these results demonstrated that glycine supplementation alleviates heat stress-induced dysfunction of antioxidant status and intestinal barrier in broilers.

Abstract
The underlying mechanism behind the deteriorated laying performance of aged laying hens remains unclear. In the present study, the laying performance and gene expression along the hypothalamus-pituitary-gonad axis were determined. A total of 300 healthy 90-wk-old ISA hens with similar body weights were classified into three groups according to their laying rate between 90 and 94 wk of age. The experimental groups were the low laying rate (<60%, LLR), high laying rate (>85%, HLR), and intermediate laying rate (60% < laying rate < 85%, MLR) hens. At the end of 94 wk of age, eight hens were randomly selected from each group for tissue collection. The gene expression of hormones and their receptors were determined in the hypothalamus, pituitary, and follicles. The results showed that the serum 17-β-estradiol had no significant difference among the three groups. However, the level of insulin-like growth factor 1 (IGF1) in LLR hens was significantly decreased in the serum, small white follicles (SWF), and dominant follicles (DF, P < 0.05). Within the hypothalamus and small yellow follicles (SYF), the mRNA expression level of estrogen receptor was higher in the MLR group (P < 0.05). Compared with HLR hens, the steroid hormone-synthesis key gene, CYP19A1 was significantly decreased in the SWF of MLR-hens and DF of MLR- and LLR-hens (P < 0.05). The mRNA expression level of IGF1 receptor was higher in the hypothalamus, pituitary, SWF, large white follicles (LWF), SYF, and DF of LLR hens, compared to the HLR hens (P < 0.05). These results suggest that decreased IGF1 in serum and follicles was associated with the decreased egg production of aged laying hens. The present study provides novel insights into the endocrine changes in aged hens having different egg production.

Abstract
Heat stress adversely affects intestinal barrier integrity ranging from minor enterocyte injury to fatal inflammatory heat shocks. The current review discusses the physiological mechanisms of the adaptive response of poultry and the nutritional interventions to improve intestinal integrity during heat stress. There are several possible metabolic mechanisms of protection including stress adaptation signaling pathways, blood flow, intestinal barrier permeability, epithelial cell proliferation, antioxidant status, microbiota composition, expression of heat shock proteins, inflammatory responses, and energy metabolism. The current review discusses the methods of intestinal permeability determination in order to estimate the extent of damage in the farm. There is a lack of knowledge about the nutritional strategies and the interaction between nutrients to reduce intestinal barrier damage and elucidate mechanisms in heat stress.

Abstract
Brown seaweed (Ascophyllum nodosum) is an exceptional bioactive substance known for its excellent antioxidant ability. Given the potential benefits of brown seaweed, the current study was conducted to determine its efficacy on growth performance, blood biochemistry, immunoglobulins (IgG and IgM), and the antioxidant capacity of broiler chickens challenged with heat stress (HS). A total of 336 mixed-sex Ross 308 broiler chicks (one-day-old) were randomly assigned into two groups; The thermoneutral group (TN, broilers were raised at 24 ± 1°C); and the heat stress group (HS; broilers were exposed to 32°C to 34°C, 8 h/d from day 21 to 27; the temperature in the remaining time was same as TN group). All birds in each group were randomly allotted to 4 dietary treatments—Negative control (NC) (without seaweed), NC + 1 mL seaweed extract (SWE) in drinking water, NC + 2 mL SWE in drinking water, and NC + 2% seaweed meal (SWM) in feed. Each treatment was assigned to six replicates with 7 broilers/replicate. Average body weight gain (ABWG), average feed intake (AFI), average water intake (AWI), feed conversion ratio (FCR), and mortality were determined weekly. On day 28, two male birds/cage were euthanized to collect blood and immune organs for subsequent biochemical, antioxidant, and immune status analysis. Data were analyzed as a 4 × 2 factorial analysis of variance using the GLM procedure of Minitab software. Overall, 2% SWM inclusion significantly increased (P < 0.05) the AFI, ABWG, and AWI of broiler chickens irrespective of HS. HS significantly reduced (P < 0.05) AFI and increased (P < 0.05) the bird's rectal temperature, plasma concentrations of sodium, chloride, glucose, amylase, and uric acid compared to TN birds. HS increased (P < 0.05) serum IgM and IgG and decreased plasma glutathione reductase and glutathione peroxidase compared to TN birds, while the activity of superoxide dismutase was not affected by HS and dietary treatments. 1 mL SWE in water and 2% SWM in feed significantly reduced (P < 0.05) the plasma activity of alanine aminotransferase and gamma-glutamyl transferase of heat-stressed broilers, respectively compared to other treatments. Conclusively, dietary supplementation of brown seaweed improved the growth performance of birds irrespective of HS and may help to reduce the negative effects of HS by improving the plasma enzyme activities of heat-stressed birds.

Abstract
Heat stress (HS) and Zearalenone (ZEN) exposure affect growth, production efficiency, and animal welfare; and, under extreme situations, both can be lethal. Given that both HS and ZEN independently cause oxidative stress, we hypothesized that simultaneous exposure to HS and ZEN would cause greater oxidative stress in porcine skeletal muscle than either condition, alone. To address this hypothesis, crossbred, prepubertal gilts were treated with either vehicle control (cookie dough) or ZEN (40 μg/kg) and exposed to either thermoneutral (TN; 21.0 °C) or 12-h diurnal HS conditions (night: 32.2 °C; day: 35.0 °C) for 7 d. Pigs were euthanized immediately following the environmental challenge and the glycolytic (STW) and oxidative (STR) portions of the semitendinosus muscle were collected for analysis. In STR, malondialdehyde (MDA) concentration, a marker of oxidative stress, tended to increase following ZEN exposure (P = 0.08). HS increased CAT (P = 0.019) and SOD1 (P = 0.049) protein abundance, while ZEN decreased GPX1 protein abundance (P = 0.064) and activity (P = 0.036). In STR, HS did not alter protein expression of HSP27, HSP70, or HSP90. Conversely, in STW, MDA-modified proteins remained similar between all groups. Consistent with STR, ZEN decreased GPX1 (P = 0.046) protein abundance in STW. In STW, ZEN decreased protein abundance of HSP27 (P = 0.032) and pHSP27 (P = 0.0068), while HS increased protein expression of HSP70 (P = 0.04) and HSP90 (P = 0.041). These data suggest a muscle fiber type-specific response to HS or ZEN exposure, potentially rendering STR more susceptible to HS- and/or ZEN-induced oxidative stress, however, the combination of HS and ZEN did not augment oxidative stress.

Abstract
Previously it was found that mRNA expression of neuropeptide Y (NPY) was increased in the chicken brain under heat stress. NPY has also been reported as an anti-stress factor to regulate brain functions in heat-exposed chicks. However, to the best of our knowledge, there is no report on the action of central NPY in the immune organs under heat stress. The aim of this study was to examine whether central injection of NPY can regulate heat stress response in the spleen and liver. After intracerebroventricular (ICV) injection of NPY, chicks were exposed to control thermoneutral temperature (CT: 30 ± 1 °C) or high ambient temperature (HT: 35 ± 1 °C) chambers for 60 min. Central injection of NPY caused lowering in rectal temperature under CT, but not under HT. Moreover, ICV injection of NPY caused a significant lower mRNA expression of heat-shock protein-70 and higher expression of glutathione synthase in the spleen, but not liver. Furthermore, plasma uric acid concentrations were significantly increased by the ICV injection of NPY in chicks under HT. These results indicate that brain NPY may contribute to attenuate the intracellular heat stress response and enhance antioxidative status in the immune organ, spleen in chicks.

Abstract
The aim was to investigate whether the combination of hydroxytyrosol acetate (HT-ac) and ethyl β-hydroxybutyrate (HBET) can improve the cognition of heat-stressed mice, meanwhile exploring the mechanism of action. Mice were divided into 5 groups: control, heat-stressed, HT-ac, HBET, and HT-ac + HBET. Mice were gavaged for 21 days and exposed to heat (42.5 ± 0.5 °C, RH 60 ± 10%, 1 h day-1) on days 15-21, except for the control group. Results showed that the combination of HT-ac + HBET improved the cognitive and learning abilities of heat-stressed mice, which were tested by Morris water maze, shuttle box, and jumping stage tests. The combination of HT-ac + HBET maintained the integrity of neurons and mitochondria of heat-stressed mice. Likewise, this combination increased the mitochondrial membrane potential, the ATP content, the expression of phosphorylated PKA, BDNF, phosphorylated CREB and Bcl-2, and decreased the expression of Bax, caspase-3, and intracytoplasmic Cyt C in heat-stressed mice.

Abstract
Introduction Birds are equipped with unique evolutionary adaptations to counter oxidative stress. Studies suggest that lifespan is inversely correlated with oxidative damage in birds. Mitochondrial function and performance are critical for cellular homeostasis, but the age-related patterns of mitochondrial gene expression and oxidative phosphorylation (OXPHOS) in birds are not fully understood. The domestic chicken is an excellent model to understand aging in birds; modern chickens are selected for rapid growth and high fecundity and oxidative stress is a recurring feature in chicken. Comparing fast- and slow-growing chicken phenotypes provides us an opportunity to disentangle the nexus of oxidative homeostasis, growth rate, and age in birds. Methods and Results We compared pectoralis muscle gene expression patterns between a fast and a slow-growing chicken breed at 11 and 42 days old. Using RNAseq analyses, we found that mitochondrial dysfunction and reduced oxidative phosphorylation are major features of fast-growth breast muscle, compared to the slow-growing heritage breed. We found transcriptomic evidence of reduced OXPHOS performance in young fast-growth broilers, which declined further by 42 days. Discussion OXPHOS performance declines are a common feature of aging. Sirtuin signaling and NRF2 dependent oxidative stress responses support the progression of oxidative damage in fast-growth chicken. Our gene expression datasets showed that fast growth in early life places immense stress on oxidative performance, and rapid growth overwhelms the OXPHOS system. In summary, our study suggests constraints on oxidative capacity to sustain fast growth at high metabolic rates, such as those exhibited by modern broilers.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Hemorrhagic shock is the important factor for causing death of trauma and war injuries. However, pathophysiological characteristics and underlying mechanism in hemorrhagic shock with hot environment remain unclear. METHODS Hemorrhagic shock in hot environment rat model was used to explore the changes of mitochondrial and vital organ functions, the variation of the internal environment, stress factors, and inflammatory factors; meanwhile, the suitable treatment was further studied. RESULTS Above 36°C hot environment induced the increase of core temperature of rats, and the core temperature was not increased in 34°C hot environment, but the 34°C hot environment aggravated significantly hemorrhagic shock induced mortality. Further study showed that the mitochondrial functions of heart, liver, and kidney were more damaged in hemorrhagic shock rats with 34°C hot environment as compared with room environment. Moreover, the results showed that in hemorrhagic shock rats with hot environment, the blood concentration of Na+, K+, and plasma osmotic pressure, the expression of inflammatory factors tumor necrosis factor-α and interleukin-6 in the serum, as well as the stress factors Adrenocorticotropic Hormone and Glucocorticoid were all notably enhanced; and acidosis was more serous; oxygen supply and oxygen consumption were remarkably decreased. In addition, the present study demonstrated that mild hypothermia (10°C) fluid resuscitation could significantly improve the survival rate in hemorrhagic shock rats with hot environment as compared with normal temperature fluid resuscitation. CONCLUSIONS Hot environment accelerated the death of hemorrhagic shock rats, which was related to the disorder of internal environment, the increase of inflammatory and stress factors. Furthermore, moderate hypothermic (10°C) fluid resuscitation was suitable for the treatment of hemorrhagic shock in hot environment.

Abstract
Heat stress has been considered as a critical risk factor for decreasing performance and causing oxidative stress in broilers. The tryptophan (TRP) derivative 5-hydroxytryptophan has been reported to protect membrane fluidity in broilers suffering from oxidative stress. Therefore, this experiment was conducted to investigate the effects of dietary TRP supplementation on antioxidant status and mitochondrial function-related genes expressions in broilers exposed to acute heat stress (34 ± 1°C, 24 h). Female Arbor Acres broilers (19-d-old, n = 180) were randomly assigned to 1 of 3 treatments. Broilers were fed a basal diet and in the thermoneutral conditions (TN, 23 ± 1°C) was considered as the TN group. Broilers were fed a basal diet and exposed to acute heat stress (HS, 34 ± 1°C) was regarded as the HS group. Broilers were fed a basal diet supplemented with 0.18% L-tryptophan and under HS conditions was treated as the HS + TRP groups. Heat stress led to increased malondialdehyde (MDA) concentration (P < 0.05), while it elevated catalase (CAT), glutathione peroxidase (GSH-Px), superoxide dismutase (SOD), and total antioxidant capacity activities (T-AOC) (P < 0.05) compared with the TN group. Nevertheless, compared with the HS group, TRP supplementation increased SOD activity (P < 0.05). The effects of acute heat stress were associated with increased mRNA abundance for redox-related genes (P < 0.05), and reduced mRNA levels for mitochondrial function-related genes (P < 0.05). Notably, the effects of acute heat stress on mitochondrial function-related genes expressions were reversed by TRP treatment. Collectively, dietary 0.18% TRP supplementation beneficially protects against acute heat stress-induced oxidation stress and mitochondrial dysfunction by regulating antioxidant states and increasing mitochondrial function-related genes expressions in broilers.

Abstract
Oxidative stress is the downstream of various adverse stresses which impairs meat quality of broiler chickens. Yet, the specific molecular mechanisms of oxidative stress in meat quality of broiler thigh muscle remains unclear. This study investigated the effects and mechanisms of H2O2-induced oxidative stress on meat quality of broiler thigh muscle, with particular emphasis on apoptosis and autophagy and the ROS/NF-κB signaling pathway. The results showed that 10%H2O2-treated broilers exhibited significantly higher drip loss and shear force and lower pH24h and muscle weight. Moreover, the ROS formation, the contents of oxidation products, the expressions of caspases (3, 6, 8, 9), Beclin1, and LC3-II/LC3-I were significantly increased, whereas the levels of antioxidation products and the expression of phosphorylation of NF-κBp65 were significantly decreased. These findings from the present study indicating that H2O2-induced oxidative stress significantly impaired the meat quality by inducing apoptosis and abnormal autophagy via ROS/NF-κB signaling pathway in the broiler thigh muscle.

Abstract
The aim of this study was to evaluate the effects of dietary supplementation of calcium propionate and calcium butyrate on the laying performance, eggshell quality, and expression of genes related to calcium and phosphorus metabolism in the tibia. One hundred and twenty 70-week-old Isa Brown hens were randomly assigned to three treatments, and each treatment had four replicates of 10 birds fed a basal diet (control) or a basal diet supplemented with 0.5% calcium propionate (CP) or 0.5% calcium butyrate (CB) for 8 weeks. The CB and CP treatments had no significant effect (P>0.05) on the laying rate, egg production, egg weight, and feed efficiency. The eggshell percentage was increased from week 2 (P<0.05) and eggshell thickness was elevated at week 8 (P<0.01) by both CP and CB treatments. Compared to the control treatment, the CB treatment increased serum calcium and phosphorus levels at week 4 (P<0.05), whereas the CP and CB treatments decreased serum phosphorus at weeks 6 and 8, respectively (P<0.05). Dietary supplementation had no effect on the bone index and bending strength of the tibia (P>0.05). The calcium and phosphorus content of the tibia was decreased by the CB treatment (P<0.05). In the spleen, NF-κB and IL-6 transcript levels were not influenced (P>0.05) but TNF-α transcript levels were decreased by the CP treatment (P<0.05). In the tibia, the expression levels of NF-κB, TNF-α, and IL-17 were not affected by the CP or CB treatment (P>0.05). The CP and CB treatments had no significant effect on the transcript levels of RANKL, OPG, RNUX2, OPN, α-Clotho, and VDR (P>0.05). In contrast, PHEX transcript levels were increased by the CP treatment (P<0.05). The expression levels of osteocalcin (P=0.094) and FGF23 (P=0.087) tended to decrease under the CB treatment. In conclusion, dietary supplementation of 0.5% calcium butyrate or 0.5% calcium propionate improved the eggshell quality of aged laying hens, possibly as a result of decreased deposition or enhanced mobilization of bone calcium and phosphorus.

Abstract
Magnolol is a bioactive polyphenolic compound commonly found in Magnolia officinalis. The aim of this study is to clarify the contribution of the magnolol additive on the growth performance of Linwu ducklings aging from 7 to 28 d, comparing to the effects of antibiotic additive (colistin sulphate). A total of 325, 7-d-old ducklings were assigned to 5 groups. Each group had 5 cages with 13 ducklings in each cage. The ducklings in different groups were fed with diets supplemented with 0, 100, 200 and 300 mg/kg magnolol additive (MA) (Control, MA100, MA200 and MA300) and 30 mg/kg colistin sulphate (CS30) for 3 weeks, respectively. Parameters regarding to the growth performance, intestinal mucosal morphology, serum biochemical indices, antioxidant and peroxide biomarkers and the expression levels of antioxidant-related genes were evaluated by one way ANOVA analysis. The results showed that 30 mg/kg colistin sulphate, 200 and 300 mg/kg magnolol additive improved the average final weight (P = 0.045), average daily body weight gain (P = 0.038) and feed/gain ratios (P = 0.001) compared to the control group. 200 and 300 mg/kg magnolol additive significantly increased the villus height/crypt depth ratio of ileum, compared to the control and CS30 groups (P = 0.001). Increased serum level of glucose (P = 0.011) and total protein (P = 0.006) were found in MA200 or MA300 group. In addition, comparing to the control and CS30 groups, MA200 or MA300 significantly increased the levels of superoxide dismutase (P = 0.038), glutathione peroxidase (P = 0.048) and reduced glutathione (P = 0.039) in serum. Moreover, the serum and hepatic levels of 8-hydroxy-2'-deoxyguanosine (P = 0.043 and 0.007, respectively) were lower in all MA groups compared to those of the control and CS30 group. The hepatic mRNA expression levels of superoxide dismutase-1, catalase and nuclear factor erythroid-2-related factor 2/erythroid-derived CNC-homology factor were also increased significantly in MA200 and MA300 groups (P < 0.05). Taken together, these data demonstrated that MA was an effective feed additive enhancing the growth performance of Linwu ducklings at 7 to 28 d by improving the antioxidant and intestinal mucosal status. It suggested that MA could be a potential ingredient to replace the colistin sulphate in diets.

The Application of Copper Waterline on Laying Performance and Gut Health of Aged Laying Hens. J Poult Sci 2022; 59:223-232. Abstract
The effect of the application of copper waterline on the performance and gut health of aged laying hens was evaluated in this study. Forty-eight 70-week-old laying hens were divided into two groups (three replicates of eight hens each): control and copper (Cu) groups provided with normal polyvinyl chloride (PVC) waterline or Cu waterline. The laying performance was measured during the four-week period of the experiment. The intestinal antioxidant status and the microbiota diversity of the cecal content were determined. Moreover, a bacteriostasis test on Escherichia coli and Salmonella enteritidis was conducted after inoculation in waterline and hens, respectively. The water Cu2+ content was increased by Cu waterline compared to the control (P<0.05). Cu waterline had no detectable effect on most production performances, however, it increased the egg weight (P<0.05). Cu waterline increased the Cu level in the eggshell. Cu level in excreta increased with time, especially in the final two weeks, however, there was no significant change in fecal Cu excretion. The lipid peroxidation product malondialdehyde content in ileum decreased (P<0.01), while the activities of CuZn-superoxide dismutase (SOD) of ileum and glutathione peroxidase (GSH-PX) activity of jejunum and ileum increased after Cu treatment. The relative abundance and richness of cecal microbiota increased after Cu treatment (P<0.05). Cu waterline changed the microbial composition, including the increased proportion of Methanocorpusculum, Paludibacter, and decreased proportion of Fucobacterium, Anaerobiospirillum, and Campylobacter. The colonization of E. coli and S. enteritidis in Cu waterline was suppressed by Cu treatment, indicating that Cu waterline had potential antibacterial properties. The result suggests that Cu waterline could inhibit the colonization of pathogenic microorganisms such as E. coli and Salmonella and facilitate the enrichment of cecal microbiota diversity.

Abstract
Context Methionine in the form of free amino acid has been widely studied in broilers challenged by heat stress (HS). However, the effects of methionine dipeptide in broilers subjected to HS are not known. Aims To evaluate the effects of methionine as free amino acid and dipeptide on the performance, oxidative status, plasma parameters and meat quality of broilers subjected to acute and chronic HS. Methods Broilers were evaluated at the following three experimental periods: 24 h of evaluation (21–22 days of age); 10 days of evaluation (22–32 days of age); and 20 days of evaluation (22–42 days of age). Broilers were divided into two groups; one group was raised in thermal comfort, and the other group was raised in continuous HS of 30°C. In both groups, animals received a diet without methionine supplementation (MD), with supplementation of methionine as free amino acid (dl-M), and with supplementation of methionine as dipeptide (dl-MM). Key results HS reduced body weight gain after 10 and 20 days of evaluation. Broilers under HS condition fed the MD diet had the highest concentrations of thiobarbituric acid reactive substances (TBARS) at 22 days of age and carbonylated proteins (CP) at 32 days of age. At 42 days of age, broilers fed the MD diet had higher concentrations of TBARS and CP. At 32 days of age, broilers under HS had lower high-density lipoprotein and higher low-density lipoprotein concentrations. In breast meat, broilers in thermal comfort fed the dl-M or dl-MM diets had a lower cooking loss. Broilers in HS fed the dl-M diet had the lowest cooking loss. HS reduced the pH of the meat of legs. Conclusions The acute and chronic HS affect the broiler performance in different ways. Methionine supplementation contributes to reduce the effects of HS. There were no notable differences between the supplementation of dl-M or dl-MM. Implications Productivity and the quality of the chicken meat are the most important attributes of the production. The ambient temperature can influence these parameters. The methionine in its most varied forms, due to its direct and indirect antioxidant function, has been shown to be an effective source of protection for the animal in adverse conditions such as during HS.

Abstract
This study evaluated the effects of selenium (Se) supplementation in maternal and offspring diets on performance and antioxidant capacity of ducklings aged from 0 to 2 wk. A total of 144 female Longyan duck breeders aged 22-wk were allotted into 2 treatments and fed a control diet or a 0.16 mg Se/kg supplemented diet. At 40-wk, 120 offspring from each treatment were divided into 2 groups, with 6 replicates of 10 birds. Using a 2 × 2 factorial design, ducklings from each maternal dietary treatment were assigned to a control diet or a 0.16 mg Se/kg supplemented diet from hatch to 2-wk. Compared with Se-deficient diet, maternal diet supplemented with 0.16 mg Se/kg increased the BW of hatchlings (P < 0.01). There were interactions between maternal and progeny diet with 0.16 mg Se/kg in BW of ducklings aged 2 wk and BW gain (BWG) as ducklings from maternal Se/progeny none treatment had the lightest BW and BWG (P < 0.01). Maternal diet with 0.16 mg Se/kg decreased plasma concentration of uric acid and insulin-like growth factor 1 (P < 0.01), and progeny diet supplemented with 0.16 mg Se/kg increased the activities of glutathione peroxidase 3 (GPx3) in plasma and glutathione peroxidase 1 in erythrocyte (P < 0.01). Maternal diet with 0.16 mg Se/kg increased (P < 0.05) the hepatic activity of total superoxide dismutase (T-SOD). Progeny diet supplemented with 0.16 mg Se/kg increased (P < 0.01) hepatic activity of GPx3 and decreased (P < 0.01) the hepatic concentration of malondialdehyde. Interactions were detected between maternal and progeny diet with 0.16 mg Se/kg in hepatic activity of T-SOD and maternal and progeny diet supplemented with Se displayed the highest hepatic activity of T-SOD (P < 0.05). Overall, Se supplementation in the diet of duck breeders and offspring increased the antioxidant capacity of ducklings. Maternal Se supplementation increased the BW of hatchlings, whereas maternal and progeny dietary Se supplementation did not affect the BWG of ducklings aged from 0 to 2 wk. Se supplementation with additional 0.16 mg/kg in the diet of duck breeders and offspring displayed beneficial effects particularly on the antioxidant capacity in ducklings.

Abstract
Mycotoxins are a crucial problem for poultry production worldwide. Two of the most frequently found mycotoxins in feedstuffs are deoxynivalenol (DON) and fumonisins (FUM) which adversely affect gut health and poultry performance. The current knowledge on DON and FUM effects on broiler responses relevant for gut detoxification, antioxidant capacity, and health is still unclear. The aim of this study was to assess a range of selected molecular intestinal biomarkers for their responsiveness to the maximum allowable European Union dietary levels for DON (5 mg/kg) and FUM (20 mg/kg) in broilers. For the experimental purpose, a challenge diet was formulated, and biomarkers relevant for detoxification, antioxidant response, stress, inflammation, and integrity were profiled across the broiler intestine. The results reveal that DON significantly (p < 0.05) induced aryl hydrocarbon receptor (AhR) and cytochrome P450 enzyme (CYP) expression mainly at the duodenum. Moreover, DON and FUM had specific significant (p < 0.05) effects on the antioxidant response, stress, inflammation, and integrity depending on the intestinal segment. Consequently, broiler molecular responses to DON and FUM assessed via a powerful palette of biomarkers were shown to be mycotoxin and intestinal site specific. The study findings could be highly relevant for assessing various dietary bioactive components for protection against mycotoxins.

Abstract
Resveratrol, a natural antioxidant, anti-inflammatory plant extract, was found to have a protective effect in poultry subjected to heat stress. In this study, we strove to characterize resveratrol on intestinal of duck exposed to acute heat stress and investigate the underlying mechanism. A total of 120 Shan-ma ducks (60 days old) were randomly divided into 2 groups. The control group was fed a basal diet, and the resveratrol group was fed a basal diet supplemented with 400 mg/kg resveratrol. Animals in 2 groups were kept at a temperature of 24°C ± 2°C for 15 d. Then, animals of both groups were placed in an artificial climate room at 39°C. Twelve ducks of each group were sacrificed for sampling at 0, 30, and 60 min, respectively. Results indicated that resveratrol increased the ratio of villus height to crypt depth, increased the number of goblet cells, and reduced the histopathological damage of jejunum caused by acute heat stress. Furthermore, the gene expression of heat shock proteins (HSP60, HSP70, and HSP90) and tight junction proteins (CLDN1 and OCLN) was significantly increased in the resveratrol group compared to that in the control groups. Simultaneously, resveratrol significantly activated the SIRT1-NRF1/NRF2 signaling pathways, improved ATP level of jejunum, and increased SOD and CAT antioxidant enzymes activities. In addition, we found that the NF-κB/NLRP3 inflammasome signaling pathways were repressed under acute heat stress. Meanwhile, supplement resveratrol further inhibited the NLRP3 inflammasome pathway, decreased protein level of NLRP3 and caspase1 p20, reduced the secretion of IL-1β. Taken together, our results indicate that resveratrol against the oxidative damage and inflammation injury in duck jejunum induced by heat stress via active SIRT1 signaling pathways.

Abstract
1. This study investigated the influence of dietary supplementation of Solanum aethiopicum and Solanecio biafrae leaves, which have nutraceutical properties, on stress response, cytokine expression, antioxidant status, blood chemistry, abdominal fat and meat quality in broilers reared in a hot, dry environment.2. One day old, Ross 308 chicks (n = 350) were randomly allotted to basal diets containing either no supplement (D1); 2.5 g/kg Solanum aethiopicum leaf (SAL; D2); 5 g/kg SAL (D3); 2.5 g/kg Solanecio biafrae leaf (SBL; D4); or 5 g/kg SBL (D5) for 42 d. Birds were reared at 34 ± 2°C and 40-50% relative humidity for 6 h/d from 22-42 d. Each dietary group was replicated in seven pens containing 10 chicks.3. In the period 1-21 d, body weight gain, feed efficiency and feed intake were not influenced by diet. At 22-42 and 1-42 d, birds supplemented with SAL and SBL had higher (P < 0.05) body weight gain and feed efficiency than the D1 birds. Cloaca temperature, carcase cuts and relative organ weight did not differ between diets. The D3 birds had higher (P < 0.05) erythrocytes and haemoglobin compared with other birds. Dietary supplements reduced (P < 0.05) mortality, abdominal fat, serum total cholesterol, corticosterone, glucose and blood aspartate aminotransferase levels.4. The treatments up-regulated (P < 0.05) splenic intelukin-10, and down-regulated (P < 0.05) tumour necrosis factor-α and interleukin-1β genes. A dose-dependent improvement (P < 0.05) in antioxidant enzyme activities and total antioxidant capacity of serum and breast muscle were found in the supplemented birds. The breast meat of the supplemented birds had lower (P < 0.05) carbonyl and malondialdehyde contents, and higher (P < 0.05) water holding capacity and redness compared with the non-supplemented meat.5. These results illustrated that supplementation with either 5 g/kg SAL or 5 g/kg SBL attenuated the deleterious effects of heat stress in broiler chickens.

Abstract
Simple Summary Broilers are especially heat sensitive because of the absence of sweat glands and their elevated metabolism. Under commercial conditions, extremely high temperatures (heat stress) reduce their performance. This research aimed to assess spray-dried feeding plasma (SDP) during constant heat stress (HS) on the performance, intestinal permeability, and bone strength in broilers. Chickens fed with a diet supplemented with SDP increased both their body weight and body weight gain compared to the HS control group. At the end of the study (d 42 of age), chickens fed with SDP significantly alleviated the increased gut leakage induced by HS and showed a significant increase in tibia strength compared with control HS chickens. The results in the present study suggest SDP mends gut integrity, hence reducing chronic systemic inflammation. Abstract The aim of this study was to see how spray-dried plasma (SDP) supplementation affected broiler chicken performance, intestinal permeability, and bone strength during persistent heat stress. One-day-old chicks (n = 480) were randomly assigned into twelve environmental corrals; four thermoneutral (TN-negative control, maintained at 24 °C from d 21–42); four heat stress (HS, exposed to 35 °C from d 21–42); and four heat stress treated with 2% SDP in the feed until d 28 followed by 1% SDP until d 42 (HS-SDP). The performance and serum levels of fluorescein isothiocyanate-dextran (FITC-d) were evaluated at d 21, 28, 35, and 42. The tibias strength was evaluated on d 21 and 42. The increment in chicken temperature (p < 0.05) was observed two h following the increase in environmental temperature in both HS groups and was associated with decreased performance parameters compared with the TN group. At d 42 of age, the chickens exposed to HS had an impaired gut permeability and decreased tibia strength compared to the TN group (p < 0.05). However, partially feeding SDP mitigated these adverse effects significantly. These findings imply that using SDP strategically during stressful times, such as prolonged heat stress, may help mitigate its negative consequences.

Abstract
The effects of nano-emulsified vegetable oil (NEVO) and betaine (BET) supplements on growth performance and meat qualities of broilers reared under cyclic heat stress (HS) were investigated. Two hundred and eighty-eight mixed-sex broilers at 21 d were randomly distributed to a 2 × 3 factorial arrangement of treatments formed by two environmental temperatures (thermoneutral (TN; 24 ± 1 °C) and cyclic high-temperature (HT; 35 ± 1 °C)) and three dietary treatments (control (CON), NEVO, and BET). The cumulative performance (21-35 d) revealed a reduction in average daily gain (ADG) (p < 0.05) in the CON compared to NEVO. NEVO and BET groups had a better feed conversion ratio (FCR) and performance efficiency factor (PEF) compared with the CON (p < 0.001, p < 0.01, respectively). The environmental temperature affected daily feed intake (DFI), ADG, FCR, and PEF. The addition of BET improved breast fillets yield, temperature, pH15min, and pH24hr (p < 0.05) in comparison with the CON. Moreover, the TN group had lower fillet temperature and higher pH15min compared to the HT. Moreover, HT increased shear force (SF), hardness, springiness, cohesiveness, and chewiness of the fillets compared to TN. In conclusion, dietary supplementation with BET and NEVO could effectively improve performance parameters and meat characteristics under HS conditions.

Abstract
This study evaluated protective effects of synbiotic on meat quality and oxidative status of breast muscle in heat-stressed broilers. Twenty 2-day-old broilers were allocated in a 2×2 factorial design, and the main factors consisted of synbiotic level (0 (basal diet) or 1.5 g/kg synbiotic) and temperature (thermoneutral or high temperature), resulting in 4 treatments. From 22 to 42 days, chickens were raised at thermoneutral temperature (22 °C) or subjected to cyclic high temperature (heat stress, HS) by keeping them at 32-33 °C for 8 h and 22 °C for rest 16 h daily. Cyclic HS decreased relative weight, redness (45 min), and pH values (45 min and 24 h) but increased contents of moisture and ether extract, lightness (45 min and 24 h), drip loss (24 h and 48 h), and cooking loss in breast muscle of broilers compared with those under thermoneutral temperature. It also increased malondialdehyde content and mRNA abundances of heat shock protein 70 (HSP70) and HSP90 but decreased glutathione (GSH) concentration and activities of superoxide dismutase (SOD) and glutathione peroxidase (GSH-Px), as well as mRNA abundances of nuclear factor (erythroid 2)-like 2 (Nrf2), NAD(P)H quinone dehydrogenase 1 (NQO1), GSH-Px, and copper and zinc superoxide dismutase in breast muscle in broilers. Dietary synbiotic supplementation was effective in increasing weight and reducing lightness (45 min), drip loss (24 h and 48 h) and cooking loss of breast muscle in heat-stressed broilers compared with those fed the basal diet. It also reduced malondialdehyde content and HSP70 mRNA abundance and increased GSH-Px activity, GSH content, and mRNA abundances of Nrf2, NQO1 and GSH-Px in breast muscle of heat-stressed broilers. These results suggested that synbiotic supplementation at a level of 1.5 g/kg could ameliorate compromised meat quality and oxidative status in broilers under cyclic HS.
