Abstract
BACKGROUND High psychological stress has been associated with several brain functional changes, including functional connectivity (FC) alterations in regions such as the prefrontal cortex and the amygdala. This study explored FC alterations associated with high perceived stress, and also investigated whether these neuroimaging features were correlated with low levels of mindfulness. METHODS This study included 29 adults (12 males and 17 females; mean age: 27.6 ± 3.2) who complained of moderate or higher perceived stress and 31 adults (17 males and 14 females; mean age: 29.2 ± 7.2) who complained of low-level stress on the questionnaire scale. Seed-based resting-state FC analysis was conducted to compare between high and low stress groups. The dorsolateral prefrontal cortex (DLPFC), the ventromedial prefrontal cortex (VMPFC) and the amygdala were selected as seeds. RESULTS High stress group showed weaker left amygdala-based FC in the left cerebellum crus II and the left orbitofrontal cortex compared with low stress group. High stress group had weaker FC between the left DLPFC and the left inferior parietal lobule. On the contrary, high stress group had stronger FC between the left VMPFC and the left caudate compared with low stress group. Weaker FC between the amygdala and the cerebellum crus II was correlated with lower level of awareness facet of mindfulness. CONCLUSIONS Those with high perceived stress showed low levels of mindfulness and several FC alterations centered on the prefrontal cortex and amygdala. Our findings also suggest that weak amygdala-based FC alterations associated with high psychological stress are related to low-level awareness facet of mindfulness.

Abstract
Stress is widely known to have debilitating effects on physical health and mental wellbeing, particularly on one's coping styles, personality traits, and outlook on life. Cumulative and chronic stress, which can serve as a triggering or aggravating factor for many pathological disorders if left unaddressed, has been linked to many life-threatening diseases. While many studies have looked at how optimism and pessimism are used as a form of coping mechanism, few have examined how different bio-psycho-social reactions to stress shape the level of optimism and pessimism. Using a sample of adult individuals aged 18 and older in the United States (n = 3361), this study addressed the following research questions: (1) What types of stress are predictive of optimism and pessimism? (2) Which responses to stress and coping mechanisms are most predictive of optimism and pessimism? (3) Do optimism and pessimism share the same stress-related risk and protective factors? Overall, this study found that while optimism and pessimism share conceptual similarities, they are not necessarily influenced by the same stress mechanisms. Stress, whether personal or financial, was associated with a negative outlook on life. This study showed that having good sleep quality and a lower number of psychological stress symptoms was linked to increasing optimism and reducing pessimism, while overeating or eating unhealthily was connected to both optimism and pessimism. Additionally, this study found that exercise/walking and emotional support mediated the effects of the responses to stress on the respondents' level of optimism and pessimism.

Abstract
PURPOSE One psychosocial risk factor that has drawn attention is work-related stress, although it is still unclear how exactly this risk factor relates to poor health. Prospective observational studies have found a 40%-50% raise in the incidence of coronary heart disease in those who experience chronic stress at work and in their personal lives. THEORETICAL FRAMEWORK In the recent decade, there has been a rise in the requirement for firms to gather information on job stress on employees that leads to coronary heart disease. As a result, this study on trends in Coronary Heart Disease induced by Work Stress becomes necessary to examine all of these efforts. DESIGN/METHODOLOGY This research employs bibliometric analysis and charting to describe the growth and structure of the research field of work-related stress causing coronary heart disease. The field's conceptual framework and research boundaries, the connections between publications and the contributors, key phrases, the latest networks of collaboration, the most prevalent concepts, and the most cited authors are all revealed by our findings. FINDINGS Research found that this field has seen a significant increase in research on coronary heart disease in recent years. Because it has been demonstrated that there is a rise in deaths from cardiovascular disease, researchers, academics, and professionals should be made aware of how stress can lead to coronary heart disease. ORIGINALITY/VALUE The study suggests that workplace health should be a priority for both developed and developing nations, and it must be disseminated in several languages.

Abstract
OBJECTIVE Medical staff, especially nurses, suffered great anxiety and stress from the COVID-19 pandemic, which negatively affected their sleep quality. In this study, we aimed to analyze the sleep quality of nursing staff after terminating the Zero-COVID-19 policy in China. METHODS 506 participants were involved in our study. The Pittsburgh Sleep Quality Index (PSQI) was used to evaluate the sleep status of the participants. Binary regression was performed to evaluate the impact factors related to sleep difficulty. RESULTS The majority of participants (96.44%) suffered from sleep disturbances. There were significant differences in age, education level and front-line activity between participants with good sleep quality and sleep difficulty. Younger age (16-25 years old) was independently associated with less sleep difficulty, while front-line activity was independently associated with severe sleep difficulty. CONCLUSION Sleep disorder was very common among nurses after ending the Zero-COVID-19 policy in China. More front-line nurses suffered severe sleep difficulty in particular, which should be worthy of attention.

Abstract
Sleep problems and stress are common among students and are associated with negative effects on academic performance as well as mental and physical health risks, but studies exploring mediating factors between stress and sleep on a daily basis are scarce. This study aimed to investigate the relationship of daily stress, Bedtime procrastination (BP) (i.e., postponing bedtime without external reasons), and sleep outcomes controlling for trait factors such as self-control. N = 96 students at a German university (M = 22.2 years, SD = 4.0) wore a sleep-tracking wearable (Fitbit Charge HR) for two weeks to assess sleep duration and to calculate the gap between the intended time to go to sleep and the objectively measured time of falling asleep. Stress, intended time to go to sleep, and sleep quality were assessed via daily diaries. Established questionnaires were used to measure trait self-control, trait BP, and smartphone addiction. Multilevel analyses indicated that more stress experienced during the day was associated with more BP (b = 2.32, p = 0.008), shorter sleep duration (b = -3.46, p = 0.003), and lower sleep quality (b = 1.03, p = 0.005) after controlling for several trait factors. The association of daily stress with sleep outcomes (quality and duration) was partly mediated by BP. Our findings indicate that BP might be one factor that contributes to stress-linked decreases in sleep duration and quality. Potential reasons for stress-related later time to fall asleep-like higher physiological arousal or stress-related worries-should be investigated in future studies.

Abstract
AIM To assess sleep quality in relation to perceived stress in patients with type 2 diabetes (T2DM) and age- and sex-matched controls. METHODS Perceived stress level and sleep quality assessed in 154 patients with T2DM (58 men, 96 women, age 58.3 ± 11.9 years), 154 matched controls (58 men, 96 women, age 56.8 ± 12.2 years) using Perceived Stress Scale and Pittsburgh Sleep Quality Index. RESULTS Patients with T2DM had worse subjective sleep quality (p < 0.001), sleep latency (p = 0.047) than controls. Patients with high stress level had worse subjective sleep quality (p = 0.027), higher use of sleeping medication (p = 0.023), daytime dysfunction (p < 0.001) than those with low stress level. No significant differences in sleep quality between controls with high and low perceived stress level. Perceived stress level in patients with T2DM correlated with subjective sleep quality (r = 0.260, p = 0.002), sleep duration (r = 0.228, p = 0.005), use of sleep medication (r = 0.245, p = 0.004), daytime dysfunction (r = 0.326, p < 0.001), in age- and sex-matched controls-to daytime dysfunction (r = 0.191, p = 0.037). CONCLUSION Sleep quality (subjective sleep quality, sleep latency) is worse in patients with type 2 diabetes than in age- and sex-matched controls. Patients with high perceived stress level have worse subjective sleep quality, higher use of sleeping medication, daytime dysfunction than patients with low perceived stress level; no significant differences in sleep quality between controls with high and low stress level. Perceived stress level in patients with type 2 diabetes is related to subjective sleep quality, sleep duration, use of sleep medication, daytime dysfunction, in age- and sex-matched controls-to daytime dysfunction.

Abstract
Prenatal stress has a significant, but small, negative effect on children's executive function (EF) in middle and high socioeconomic status (SES) households. Importantly, rates and severity of prenatal stress are higher and protective factors are reduced in lower SES households, suggesting prenatal stress may be particularly detrimental for children's EF in this population. This study examined whether prenatal stress was linked to 5-year-old's EF in a predominantly low SES sample and child sex moderated this association, as males may be more vulnerable to adverse prenatal experiences. Participants were 132 mother-child dyads drawn from a prospective prenatal cohort. Mothers reported on their depression symptoms, trait anxiety, perceived stress, everyday discrimination, and sleep quality at enrollment and once each trimester, to form a composite prenatal stress measure. Children's EF was assessed at age 5 years using the parent-report Behavior Rating Inventory of Executive Function - Preschool (BRIEF-P) Global Executive Composite subscale and neuropsychological tasks completed by the children. Mixed models revealed higher prenatal stress was associated with lower BRIEF-P scores, indicating better EF, for females only. Higher prenatal stress was associated with lower performance on neuropsychological EF measures for both males and females. Results add to the limited evidence about prenatal stress effects on children's EF in low SES households.

Abstract
Considerable evidence suggests couple relationship education (CRE) programs are effective in improving couples' relationship functioning, yet few studies have examined the implications of CRE programs on indicators of physical health despite substantial research supporting links between relational and physical health. This study utilized a sample of 308 couples randomly assigned to a CRE curriculum to explore the dyadic links between conflict management and self-care skills (emphasized in CRE), stress, and sleep dysfunction concurrently. We prospectively tested whether changes in skills drove changes in sleep dysfunction or vice versa, for both self and partner. Results from a series of structural equation models indicated indirect links for men and women between conflict management and self-care skills and sleep dysfunction through lower stress level at program start. Dyadically, men's and women's better conflict management skills were associated with partners' lower stress, which was in turn associated with partners' lower sleep dysfunction. Men's better self-care skills were linked with partners' lower stress levels, which were linked with partners' lower sleep dysfunction. Tests of dyadic prospective cross-lagged effects among changes in sleep and changes in skills indicated that initial improvements in both partners' sleep predicted improvements in their own conflict management skills 1 year later. Initial improvements in women's conflict management skills predicted reduced sleep dysfunction for themselves. Additionally, for both partners, early changes in self-care predicted later reductions in sleep dysfunction. Dyadically, immediate improvements in men's self-care predicted reduced sleep dysfunction for their partner a year later. Implications for research and practice are discussed.

Abstract
Background: Inflammatory bowel diseases (IBDs) have seen an exponential increase in incidence, particularly among pediatric patients. Psychological stress is a significant risk factor influencing the disease course. This review assesses the interaction between stress and disease progression, focusing on articles that quantified inflammatory markers in IBD patients exposed to varying degrees of psychological stress. Methods: A systematic narrative literature review was conducted, focusing on the interaction between IBD and stress among adult and pediatric patients, as well as animal subjects. The research involved searching PubMed, Scopus, Medline, and Cochrane Library databases from 2000 to December 2023. Results: The interplay between the intestinal immunity response, the nervous system, and psychological disorders, known as the gut-brain axis, plays a major role in IBD pathophysiology. Various types of stressors alter gut mucosal integrity through different pathways, increasing gut mucosa permeability and promoting bacterial translocation. A denser microbial load in the gut wall emphasizes cytokine production, worsening the disease course. The risk of developing depression and anxiety is higher in IBD patients compared with the general population, and stress is a significant trigger for inducing acute flares of the disease. Conclusions: Further large studies should be conducted to assess the relationship between stressors, psychological disorders, and their impact on the course of IBD. Clinicians involved in the medical care of IBD patients should aim to implement stress reduction practices in addition to pharmacological therapies.

Abstract
Background Sleep is important for health, but its relationship to cardiometabolic health in women of childbearing age remains unclear. Furthermore, stress, unmet basic needs, and lack of physical activity may be related to disrupted sleep and poor cardiometabolic health in women of childbearing age and these relationships may differ by ethnicity. The purposes of this study were to investigate the relationship between sleep, markers of cardiometabolic health, stress, unmet basic needs, and physical activity in women of childbearing age with overweight or obesity and identify if these relationships differed between women that identified as Latino/Hispanic and non-Latino/Hispanic ethnicity. Methods A secondary cross-sectional analysis was conducted using baseline data from a trial that embeds healthy eating and activity into a national home visiting program, Parents as Teachers. The sample was stratified based on self-reported ethnicity (Hispanic/Latino or non-Hispanic/Latino). Pearson's and Spearman's correlations were used to determine bivariate relationships among sleep, cardiometabolic variables, stress, unmet basic needs, and physical activity. Results Two hundred seventy-six women, 46% of whom identified as Hispanic/Latino, were included in the analysis. Body mass index (BMI) was significantly correlated with sleep disturbance (ρ = 0.23, p = 0.01) in women who identify as Hispanic/Latino. Stress was positively related to sleep disturbance, sleep duration, and unmet needs for both groups of women. BMI was correlated with unmet basic needs in women who identified as non-Hispanic/Latino (ρ = 0.25, p = 0.01). Conclusions Our results suggest that sleep, stress, and basic needs are important in understanding cardiometabolic health in women of childbearing age and these relationships differ depending on ethnicity. Abstract
Introduction Sleep is especially important to overall well-being. Some aspects of sleep have been well documented, for example sleep quantity and its effect on well-being, but the value of a consistent sleep routine remains poorly studied. University students are a population group especially susceptible to stress, mental health problems and poor sleep quality and experience changing daily schedules. Investigating the protective power of sleep in this population group is therefore an important avenue of research. Methods Applying a structural equation model, the current study surveyed a large sample of Czech university students during the COVID-19 pandemic in late spring, 2021, and observed the mediation effects of sleep on this group. Results and Discussion The study found that working, maintaining social contact and attending lectures in person had a strong effect on satisfaction with life. Increased personal study time indirectly supported consistent sleep routines and mediated perceptions of life satisfaction. As expected, the results indicated the importance of high-quality sleep. The results also verified partial mediation, directly and indirectly, through sleep quality, highlighting the significance of a consistent sleep routine in students on their self-reported satisfaction with life.

Abstract
STUDY OBJECTIVES To examine the association of self-identified race with sleep quality in heavy smokers. METHODS We studied baseline data from 1965 non-Hispanic White and 462 African American participants from SPIROMICS with ≥ 20 pack-years smoking history. We first examined the Pittsburgh Sleep Quality Index's (PSQI) internal consistency and item-total correlation in a population with chronic obstructive pulmonary disease. We then used staged multivariable regression to investigate the association of race and sleep quality as measured by the PSQI) The first model included demographics, the second added measures of health status, and the third, indicators of socioeconomic status. We next explored the correlation between sleep quality with 6-minute walk distance and St. George's Respiratory Questionnaire score as chronic obstructive pulmonary disease-relevant outcomes. We tested for interactions between self-identified race and the most important determinants of sleep quality in our conceptual model. RESULTS We found that the PSQI had good internal consistency and item-total correlation in our study population of heavy smokers with and without chronic obstructive pulmonary disease. African American race was associated with increased PSQI in univariable analysis and after adjustment for demographics, health status, and socioenvironmental exposures (P = .02; 0.44 95%CI: .06 to .83). Increased PSQI was associated with higher postbronchodilator forced expiratory volume in 1 second and lower household income, higher depressive symptoms, and female sex. We identified an interaction wherein depressive symptoms had a greater impact on PSQI score for non-Hispanic White than African American participants (P for interaction = .01). CONCLUSIONS In heavy smokers, self-reported African American race is independently associated with worse sleep quality. Abstract
BACKGROUND Sleep can have consequential effects on people's health and well-being, and these effects may vary among younger and older adults. PURPOSE The goal of the present study was to investigate how sleep relates to physiologic and stress responses in daily life across adulthood. METHODS We used an Ecological Momentary Assessment method in a large sample of participants (N = 4,359; Mage = 46.75, SD = 12.39; 69.30% male, 29.85% female) who completed morning sleep diaries, reported subjective stress, and recorded their heart rate and blood pressure for 21 days. Sleep was assessed with self-reports of duration, efficiency, and quality. RESULTS Using multilevel modeling, between-person analyses showed that sleep duration, efficiency, and quality were negatively related to morning heart rate and stress, such that people who slept longer, more efficiently, or better experienced lower heart rate and stress compared to those who slept shorter, less efficiently, or worse. Within-person analyses showed that sleep duration, efficiency, and quality predicted morning heart rate, blood pressure (though less consistently), and stress. That is, people experienced lower heart, blood pressure, and stress following nights when they slept longer, more efficiently, or better than they typically did. These within-person relationships were moderated by age, such that the effects of better and longer sleep on lower morning heart rate, blood pressure, and stress were stronger among younger than older adults. CONCLUSION These findings suggest that daily variations in sleep show immediate associations with stress and physiologic responses, but these daily variations have a stronger relationship among younger compared to older adults.

Abstract
Cardiovascular disease is the leading cause of non-noncommunicable disease mortality worldwide. Therefore, this study analyzes the mediating effect of dizziness and fatigue in the relationship between stress and sleep quality in patients with heart disease. This study was conducted on patients with heart disease diagnosed by a cardiologist from December 7, 2021 to August 30, 2022 at the Outpatient Department of Cardiology at Hanyang University Hospital in Guri-si, Gyeonggi-do. To verify the serial multiple mediation effect, serial multiple mediation analysis was performed using SPSS Macro Process Model 6 as the most appropriate verification method for this study. The analysis indicated that the more dizziness a participant experienced, the more severe their physical and psychological fatigue and the poorer their quality of sleep. Also, the more severe the physical fatigue, the worse the psychological fatigue and the worse the quality of sleep. In other words, the more severe the psychological fatigue, the poorer the quality of sleep. In summary, in the relationship in which stress in patients with heart disease affects sleep quality, stress is a variable that directly affects sleep quality, and this means that the stress of patients with heart disease can affect the quality of sleep through the parameters, dizziness and fatigue, sequentially; this research model can thus be considered a partial mediator model. Fatigue in patients with cardiovascular disease had a direct effect on sleep quality, and there was a mediating effect through dizziness and fatigue in the relationship between stress and sleep quality. Therefore, it is necessary to develop a sleep management program that can improve the quality of sleep in patients with cardiovascular disease as well as a nursing intervention plan that can alleviate fatigue and control stress in such patients.

Abstract
PURPOSE There were limited studies that have probed into the combined effect of the cortisol/testosterone (C/T) ratio as a biomarker of stress and Pittsburgh Sleep Quality Index (PSQI) on coronary heart disease (CHD). This research aimed to explore the association of C/T ratio and PSQI with the risk of CHD in a rural Chinese population, as well as the interaction and combined effect between C/T ratio and PSQI on CHD. METHODS A case-control study was performed including 307 individuals without CHD and 307 patients drawn from Henan Rural Cohort. Logistic regression was utilized to survey the independent and joint effects of the C/T ratio and PSQI on CHD. To estimate the interaction impact of the C/T ratio and sleep quality (PSQI) on CHD, a cross-product term was introduced in the generalized linear model. RESULTS Higher C/T ratio and PSQI index scores are related to increased odds ratio for CHD (Odds ratios (ORs) and 95 % confidence interval (CI) were 1.17 (1.07, 1.29), p-trend < 0.001; 1.16 (1.09, 1.22), respectively). The odds ratio of C/T ratio for CHD increased with increasing PSQI in women (pinteraction = 0.018) and total population (pinteraction = 0.033). The combined group of high C/T ratio and high PSQI had the highest risk of CHD (Total: OR = 7.53, 95 % CI: 4.12-13.76). CONCLUSIONS The risk of CHD was associated with low testosterone levels, high C/T ratios, and high PSQI scores. Additionally, poor sleep quality aggravated the effect of high C/T ratio on coronary heart disease.

Abstract
The teaching profession has always been challenging, while for various reasons the magnitude of observed stress in teachers has been continually growing over time. This study was conducted to demonstrate the relevance of stress in this professional group and to generate evidence for the benefit of primary school teachers and, indirectly, their pupils. To this end, we examined a large number of school teachers in a descriptive cross-sectional study. The survey comprised 786 primary school instructors aged 21 to 65 years, 646 women (82.2%) and 140 males (17.8%), and was performed from March to October 2022. Participants were asked about their gender, age, marital status, place of domicile, satisfaction with their income, whether their income met their needs, number of children, whether they cared for a person with a disability, work experience, alcohol use, eating patterns, and their height and weight for computation of their Body Mass Index (BMI). The survey included the Teacher Subjective Well-being Questionnaire (TSWQ), the Perceived Stress Scale (PSS), the Healthy Lifestyle and Personal Control Questionnaire (HLPCQ), and the Pittsburgh Sleep Quality Index (PSQI). The results showed that there were significant differences between the two sexes in age, marital status, work experience, smoking, alcohol use, and eating breakfast. Furthermore, there were significant differences between the two sexes in BMI, PSS Total, Dietary Health Choice, Harm Avoidance and Total HLPCQ. The variance of PSS Total was predicted by Sex, Teacher Efficacy, Total PSQI, Dietary Health Choice, organized physical exercise, social support and mental control, and Total HLPCQ. Between teacher efficacy, school connectedness, teacher well-being, organized physical exercise, social support and mental control, Total HLPCQ and PSS Total, the correlation coefficients were negative and significant at the <0.05 level. Between Total PSQI and PSS Total, the correlation coefficient was positive and significant at the <0.05 level. Between teacher efficacy, school connectedness and teacher well-being, organized physical exercise, social support and mental control, Total HLPCQ and Total PSQI, the correlation coefficients were negative and significant at the <0.05 level. In summary, we demonstrated that Greek primary school teachers experience significant stress, which is intertwined with their way of life, and reflected in significant decreases in their sense of well-being, quality of sleep, and overall life satisfaction, as well as in their standards of teaching.

Abstract
Research over the past two decades has continued to highlight the robust associations between procrastination and stress across multiple populations and contexts. Despite this burgeoning evidence base and theory linking procrastination to higher levels of stress, as well as the reverse, the role of context in this potentially dynamic association has received relatively little attention. In this conceptual review I argue that from a mood regulation perspective of procrastination, stressful contexts necessarily increase risk for procrastination because they deplete coping resources and lower the threshold for tolerating negative emotions. Drawing on insights from coping and emotion regulation theory, the new stress context vulnerability model of procrastination proposes that the risk for procrastination increases in stressful contexts primarily because procrastination is a low-resource means of avoiding aversive and difficult task-related emotions. The new model is then applied to evidence on the primary and secondary sources of stress during the COVID-19 pandemic and how they may have increased vulnerability for procrastination. After discussing potential applications of the new model for understanding how and why risk for procrastination may increase in other stressful contexts, approaches that might mitigate vulnerability for procrastination in high-stress contexts are discussed. Overall, this new stress context vulnerability model underscores the need for taking a more compassionate view of the antecedents and factors that may increase the risk for procrastination.

Abstract
An important measure of brain health is the integrity of white matter connectivity structures that link brain regions. Studies have found an association between poorer sleep quality and decreased white matter integrity. Stress is among the strongest predictors of sleep quality. This study aimed to evaluate the association between sleep quality and white matter and to test if the relationship persisted after accounting for stress. White matter microstructures were measured by diffusion tensor imaging in a population of Old Order Amish/Mennonite (N = 240). Sleep quality was determined by the Pittsburgh Sleep Quality Index. Current stress levels were measured by the perceived stress scale. Exposure to lifetime stress was measured by the lifetime stressor inventory. Microstructures of four white matter tracts: left and right anterior limbs of internal capsule, left anterior corona radiata, and genu of corpus callosum were significantly correlated with sleep quality (all p ≤ 0.001). The current stress level was a significant predictor of sleep quality (p ≤ 0.001) while lifetime stress was not. PSQI remained significantly associated with white matter integrity in these frontal tracts (all p < 0.01) after accounting for current stress and lifetime stress, while current and lifetime stress were not significant predictors of white matter in any of the four models. Sleep quality did not have any substantial mediation role between stress and white matter integrity. Sleep quality was significantly associated with several frontal white matter tracts that connect brain structures important for sleep regulation regardless of current or past stress levels.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Approximately one-third of the healthy population suffer from sleep problems, but only a small proportion of those affected receive professional help. Therefore, there is an urgent need for easily accessible, affordable, and efficacious sleep interventions. OBJECTIVE A randomized controlled study was conducted to investigate the efficacy of a low-threshold sleep intervention consisting of either (i) sleep data feedback plus sleep education or (ii) sleep data feedback alone in comparison with (iii) no intervention. MATERIAL AND METHODS A total of 100 employees of the University of Salzburg (age: 39.51 ± 11.43 years, range: 22-62 years) were randomly assigned to one of the three groups. During the 2-week study period, objective sleep parameters were assessed via actigraphy. In addition, an online questionnaire and a daily digital diary were used to record subjective sleep parameters, work-related factors, as well as mood and well-being. After 1 week, a personal appointment was conducted with participants of both experimental group 1 (EG1) and experimental group 2 (EG2). While the EG2 only received feedback about their sleep data from week 1, the EG1 additionally received a 45-min sleep education intervention containing sleep hygiene rules and recommendations regarding stimulus control. A waiting-list control group (CG) did not receive any feedback until the end of the study. RESULTS Results indicate positive effects on sleep and well-being following sleep monitoring over the course of 2 weeks and minimal intervention with a single in-person appointment including sleep data feedback. Improvements are seen in sleep quality, mood, vitality, and actigraphy-measured sleep efficiency (SE; EG1), as well as in well-being and sleep onset latency (SOL) in EG2. The inactive CG did not improve in any parameter. CONCLUSION Results suggest small and beneficial effects on sleep and well-being in people being continuously monitored and receiving (actigraphy-based) sleep feedback when paired with a single-time personal intervention.

Abstract
Stress is an important risk factor for modern chronic diseases, with distinct influences in males and females. The sex specificity of the mammalian stress response contributes to the sex-dependent development and impacts of coronary artery disease (CAD). Compared to men, women appear to have greater susceptibility to chronic forms of psychosocial stress, extending beyond an increased incidence of mood disorders to include a 2- to 4-fold higher risk of stress-dependent myocardial infarction in women, and up to 10-fold higher risk of Takotsubo syndrome-a stress-dependent coronary-myocardial disorder most prevalent in post-menopausal women. Sex differences arise at all levels of the stress response: from initial perception of stress to behavioural, cognitive, and affective responses and longer-term disease outcomes. These fundamental differences involve interactions between chromosomal and gonadal determinants, (mal)adaptive epigenetic modulation across the lifespan (particularly in early life), and the extrinsic influences of socio-cultural, economic, and environmental factors. Pre-clinical investigations of biological mechanisms support distinct early life programming and a heightened corticolimbic-noradrenaline-neuroinflammatory reactivity in females vs. males, among implicated determinants of the chronic stress response. Unravelling the intrinsic molecular, cellular and systems biological basis of these differences, and their interactions with external lifestyle/socio-cultural determinants, can guide preventative and therapeutic strategies to better target coronary heart disease in a tailored sex-specific manner.

Abstract
Objective To describe daytime sleepiness and insomnia among adults in Samoa and identify modifiable factors associated with these measures. Design/setting Cross-sectional analysis of data from the Soifua Manuia ("Good Health") study (n = 519, 55.1% female); Upolu island, Samoa. Methods Daytime sleepiness and insomnia were assessed with the Epworth Sleepiness Scale (ESS) and the Women's Health Initiative Insomnia Rating Scale (WHIIRS), respectively. Detailed physical, sociodemographic, and behavioral factors were collected. Sleep measures were characterized using multiple linear regression with backwards elimination and a bootstrap stability investigation. Results Excessive daytime sleepiness (ESS>10) and insomnia (WHIIRS>10) were reported by 20% and 6.3% of the sample, respectively. ESS scores were higher in individuals reporting more physical activity (Estimate=1.88; 95% CI=1.12 to 2.75), higher material wealth (0.18; 0.09 to 0.28), and asthma (2.85; 1.25 to 4.51). ESS scores were lower in individuals residing in periurban versus urban regions (-1.43; -2.39 to -0.41), reporting no work versus day shift work (-2.26; -3.07 to -1.41), and reporting greater perceived stress (-0.14; -0.23 to -0.06). WHIIRS scores were lower in individuals reporting "other" shift work (split/irregular/on-call/rotating) versus day shift work (-1.96; -2.89 to -1.14) and those who perceived their village's wealth to be poor/average versus wealthy (-0.94; -1.50 to -0.34). Conclusions Participants had a generally higher prevalence of excessive daytime sleepiness, but lower prevalence of insomnia, compared with individuals from high-income countries. Factors associated with sleep health differed compared with prior studies, emphasizing potential cultural/environmental differences and the need for targeted interventions to improve sleep health in this setting.

Abstract
Medical students are vulnerable to sleep disorders, which could be further exaggerated by poor dormitory environment and roommate behaviour. However, there is little evidence of whether dormitory environment intervention is effective in improving the sleep quality of medical college students in developing countries. The present study aimed to evaluate the effects of a comprehensive multidomain intervention on dormitory environment and roommate behaviour among medical college students in China. In this cluster randomised controlled trial, a total of 106 dormitories (364 students) were randomly allocated into an intervention group (55 dormitories, 193 students) and a control group (51 dormitories, 171 students). The intervention group received a three-month intervention with multiple components to improve or adapt to sleep environments in dormitories; the control group received no intervention. Primary and secondary outcomes were measured at study enrolment and three months later for both groups. The linear mixed-effects models showed that, compared with the control group, the intervention was associated with a significantly decreased Pittsburgh Sleep Quality Index (β = -0.67, p = 0.012), and a marginally significant effect on reducing roommates' influence on sleep schedule (β = -0.21, p = 0.066). Students in the intervention group rated "making dormitory sleep rules" and "wearing eye masks" as the most effective intervention measures. These findings could contribute to the limited body of scientific evidence about sleep intervention in Chinese medical students and highlight the importance of dormitory sleep environments in maintaining sleep quality.

Abstract
(1) Background: The aim of this study was to explore the role of perceived stress and the health locus of control in Crohn's disease and their influence upon the development of flare-ups of this disease. (2) Methods: Stress and the external locus of control were evaluated in a sample of 64 Crohn's patients (flare-up phase versus latency phase). The perceived stress scale (PSS-14) and the multidimensional health locus of control scale were the measurement instruments used. (3) Results: The results indicate that the patients have high stress levels during a flare-up (26.13; 27.44; 28.79; 29.67); high stress levels (28.07; 29.67; 27.44; 28.07) if they have a high external locus of control; and that the external locus of control and stress levels have a significant influence upon the existence of flare-ups in those patients with low external locus of control levels (χ2 = 11.127; df = 1: p < 0.001). (4) Conclusions: Actions aimed at reducing stress and external locus of control levels are necessary in Crohn's disease.

Abstract
OBJECTIVE Chronic exposure to stress is associated with metabolic syndrome (MetS), but the mechanism is unclear. We investigated the associations between chronic burden, sleep, and MetS in the Coronary Artery Risk Development in Young Adults Study. METHODS Chronic burden was self-reported (2000-2001) according to experiences with stressors for longer than 6 months. Wrist actigraphy-measured sleep duration and sleep efficiency were collected for 6 days; sleep duration, sleep quality, and daytime sleepiness were self-reported (2003-2004). MetS was measured during the clinic visit, from 2005 to 2006. Multivariable logistic and Cox proportional hazard models were fit to determine the associations of interest. Mediation by sleep was assessed using the product of coefficients approach. RESULTS Among participants ( n = 606), the average (standard deviation) age was 40 (3.6) years, 58% were female, and 43% were Black. The prevalences of chronic burden, short sleep (≤6 hours), and MetS were 35%, 43% and 20.5%, respectively. High versus low chronic burden was associated with shorter self-reported sleep duration and higher daytime sleepiness. Chronic burden was associated with 1.85 higher odds (95% confidence interval = 1.11-3.09) of MetS. Sleep characteristics were not associated with MetS. There was no evidence that sleep mediated the chronic burden-MetS relation. CONCLUSION Burden of chronic stress may be an emerging novel risk factor for both poor sleep and MetS.

Abstract
Sleep paralysis (SP) is a hypnagogic or hypnopompic state associated with the inability to move while conscious. Recurrent isolated sleep paralysis (RISP) is a type of REM parasomnia. Individuals experiencing anxiety disorders, PTSD, exposure to chronic stress, or shift work are at risk of developing this sleep disorder. This study aimed to assess: (1) the prevalence, frequency, and symptomatology of SP, and (2) the impact of the severity of anxiety symptoms, perceived stress, and lifestyle mode variables on the frequency and severity of SP in four professional groups at high risk of SP (n = 844): nurses and midwives (n = 172), policemen (n = 174), teachers (n = 107), and a group of mixed professions—“other professions” (n = 391). The study used a battery of online questionnaires: the Sociodemographic and Health Status Questionnaire, the SP-EPQ, the PCL -5, the STAI-T, the PSWQ and the PSS-10. The prevalence of SP was the lowest among policemen (15.5%) and the highest in the group of “other professions” (39.4%). The association of SP with symptoms of PTSD and anxiety was confirmed in the group of nurses and “other professions”. Among other factors modulating the incidence and severity of SP were: age, BMI, smoking, alcohol consumption, sleep duration, and perceived stress. This study indicates that there exist links between SP and psychological and lifestyle factors, suggesting a complex etiology for this sleep disorder. Due to the high prevalence of SP in the studied groups of occupations, further research is necessary to develop preventive and therapeutic methods for SP.

Abstract
OBJECTIVES Evidence suggests that emotion regulation difficulty may play an important role in the association between life stress, sleep disturbance and depressive symptoms. We proposed two models depicting the possible moderating roles of prefrontal cortex activation during emotion regulation in the associations among these variables and tested them. We hypothesized that (1) the association between stress and sleep disturbance would differ across prefrontal cortex activation during emotion regulation (moderation model) and (2) the indirect effects of stress on depressive symptoms through sleep disturbance would depend on prefrontal cortex activation during emotion regulation (moderated mediation model). METHODS Forty-eight healthy adults without sleep disorders based on nocturnal polysomnography participated in this study. They received functional magnetic resonance imaging scans while performing an emotion regulation task. They also completed questionnaires assessing life stress, sleep disturbance and depressive symptoms. The proposed models were tested using the PROCESS macro for SPSS. RESULTS As hypothesized, there was a significant moderating effect of prefrontal cortex activation during emotion regulation on the association between life stress and sleep disturbance. Furthermore, right lateral prefrontal cortex activation had a moderating role in the indirect effect of life stress on depressive symptoms through sleep disturbance. CONCLUSION These findings highlight the important role of prefrontal cortex function during emotion regulation in the associations between stress, sleep disturbance and depressive symptoms. Increasing lateral prefrontal cortex recruitment when regulating the emotional response to negative life events may be critical for the prevention and intervention of depression as well as sleep problems.

Abstract
The outbreak of the COVID-19 pandemic has severely impacted the world economy and has, most presumably, exerted a great deal of stress on citizens, in turn leading to the call for timely assessments of how this period might actually impact individuals at the level of everyday well-being and in their behaviors such as consumer decisions. Through one pilot study and two online survey studies, we tentatively investigated this latter question, and demonstrated that the COVID-19 pandemic may increase perceived stress and impair individuals’ sleep quality, which in turn impels their irrational consumption. This research provides preliminary evidence for the impact of the present pandemic on irrational consumption and contributes to the literature on stress and consumer behavior.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Obesity is a growing epidemic among university students, and the high levels of stress reported by this population could contribute to this issue. Singular relationships between perceived stress; engagement in restrained, uncontrolled, and emotional eating; sleep; dietary risk; and body mass index (BMI) have been reported in the current body of literature; however, these constructs interact with each other, and the complex relationships among them are infrequently examined. Therefore, the aim of the present study was to explore the complex relationships between these constructs using mediation and moderation analyses stratified by gender. METHODS A cross-sectional study, enrolling university students from the United States (U.S.), the Netherlands, South Korea, Malaysia, Ireland, Ghana, and China, was conducted between October 2020 and January 2021 during the COVID-19 pandemic. Perceived stress; maladaptive eating behaviors including restrained, uncontrolled, and emotional eating; sleep duration and quality; dietary risk; and BMI were assessed using validated questionnaires, which were distributed through an online platform. RESULTS A total of 1392 students completed the online survey (379 male, 973 female, and 40 who self-identified as "other"). Uncontrolled and emotional eating mediated the relationship between perceived stress and dietary risk for both males and females; higher sleep quality weakened this relationship among female students but not males. Emotional eating mediated the relationship between perceived stress and BMI for both males and females, but higher sleep quality weakened this relationship only among females. CONCLUSIONS Our findings suggest that students in higher education are likely to benefit from interventions to reduce uncontrolled and emotional eating. Programs that improve sleep quality, especially during highly stressful periods, may be helpful.

Abstract
Background Teaching has been found to be one of the most stressful occupations. Hence, current interest in reducing stress and enhancing the well-being of teachers is strong. Mindfulness-based stress reduction (MBSR) is documented to be effective in reducing stress and increasing well-being. This study investigated the effectiveness of delivering MBSR to lower secondary school teachers as a part of a teacher-training programme. Methods This study was a nested trial within the parallel cluster-randomized controlled trial, Stress-free Everyday LiFe for Children and Adolescents REsearch (SELFCARE). Schools were recruited from all five geographical regions in Denmark between May 2018 and May 2019. One to three teachers from each school were allowed to participate. At baseline, 110 schools, representing 191 lower secondary school teachers, were cluster-randomized to intervention or a wait-list control group. The intervention group received MBSR during 2019 and the wait-list control group during 2020. Data were collected at baseline and after 3 and 6 months. The primary outcome was measured by Cohen’s Perceived Stress Scale (PSS). Data were analyzed using a mixed-effect linear regression model and bootstrapped for cluster effects. Results At 3 months, the intervention group statistically significantly reduced their PSS score 1.7 [95% confidence interval (CI) 0.04–3.3] points more than did the wait-list control group. At 6 months, the intervention group had statistically significantly reduced their mean PSS score 2.1 (95% CI: 0.5–3.8) points more than the wait-list control group. Conclusion It is possible to reduce perceived stress among lower secondary school teachers by delivering MBSR as part of a teacher-training programme.

Abstract
This study investigated the factors that are associated with sleep disturbances among Chinese athletes. Sleep quality and associated factors were assessed by the Athlete Sleep Screening Questionnaire (ASSQ, n = 394, aged 18–32 years, 47.6% female). Sleep difficulty score (SDS) and level of sleep problem (none, mild, moderate, or severe) were used to classify participants' sleep quality. Categorical variables were analyzed by Chi-square or fisher's exact tests. An ordinal logistic regression analysis was used to explore factors with poor sleep (SDS ≥8). Approximately 14.2% of participants had moderate to severe sleep problem (SDS ≥8). Fifty-nine percent of the athletes reported sleep disturbance during travel, while 43.3% experienced daytime dysfunction when travelling for competition. No significant difference was found in the SDS category between gender, sports level and events. Athletes with evening chronotype were more likely to report worse sleep than athletes with morning and intermediate chronotype (OR, 2.25; 95%CI, 1.44–3.52; p < 0.001). For each additional year of age, there was an increase of odds ratio for poor sleep quality (OR, 1.15; 95%CI, 1.04–1.26; p = 0.004), while each additional year of training reduced the odds ratio (OR, 0.95; 95%CI, 0.91–0.99; p = 0.044). To improve sleep health in athletes, chronotype, travel-related issues, age and years of training should be taken into consideration. Sleep problems in athletes have been noticed in recent years. By using the clinically validated questionnaire (ASSQ) in Chinese athletes, we found that 14.2% of Chinese athletes had sleep disturbance. By using a multivariate ordinal logistic regression model, we were able to detect chronotype, travel-related issues, age and years of training were important influencing factors on poor sleep quality in Chinese athletes. The novel findings observed in this study shed new light on the current sleep health and possible factors affecting sleep disturbances of Chinese athletes and provide a new perspective for Chinese athletes to optimize their sleep strategies that improve sleep quality.

Abstract
INTRODUCTION Poor sleep health has been widely associated with chronic illnesses, and immigrant populations in the United States do not experience optimal sleep, putting them at increased risk of such illnesses. The purpose of this scoping review was to synthesize published literature on the influence of acculturation and acculturative stress on the sleep health of immigrant populations in the United States. METHOD This scoping review was guided by Arksey and O'Malley's framework and the Preferred Reporting Items for Systematic reviews and Meta-Analyses guideline, and 16 research articles were included in its synthesis of results. RESULTS Findings indicated that immigrants in the United States have poor sleep health and that acculturation and acculturative stress may be major influencing factors. In addition, demographic and socio-contextual factors such as gender, economic status, education, and employment characteristics influenced immigrants' sleep. Race and ethnicity were additional factors influencing sleep, but the limited number of studies in this area precludes determination of which groups are most affected. Chronic stress, depressive symptoms, and language influenced immigrants' sleep health, but mixed results were observed for generational status. DISCUSSION Future sleep studies should include vulnerable and understudied immigrant groups and consider all socio-contextual and psychological factors potentially affecting sleep health. In health settings serving immigrant groups, nurses should emphasize screening for these factors. Also, comparative studies are needed to identify specific factors that may affect sleep health in particular immigrant ethnic groups.

Abstract
The current study aimed to examine sleep characteristics of esport players and the stipulated effects of game performance on consecutive sleep characteristics using residual dynamic structural equation modeling (RDSEM). A sample of 27 Counterstrike players with a mean age of 18½ years participated in the current study. Sleep was detected over a period of 56 days with a Somnofy sleep monitor that utilizes an impulse radio ultra-wideband puls radar and Dopler technology, and weekly game performance was reported by the players. The results showed that esport players' sleep characteristics were in the lower levels of recommended guidelines and that sleep onset started later and sleep offset ended later in the morning compared with athletes from other traditional sports. The esport players displayed stable patterns in sleep onset, sleep offset, time in bed, sleep efficiency and non-REM respiration rates per minute (NREM RPM). On the between-person level, esport players with better game performance spent more time sleeping (r = 0.55) and scored lower on NREM RPM (r = -0.44). Unstandardized within-person cross-lagged paths showed that better game performance predicted subsequent earlier sleep offset. The within-level standardized estimates of the cross-lagged paths revealed that participants with better game performance spent subsequently more time in deep sleep (0.20), less time in light sleep (-0.14), less time in bed (-0.16), and displayed lower NREM RPM (-0.21), earlier sleep offset (-0.21), and onset (-0.09). The findings of better game performance being related to better sleep are discussed in terms of existing knowledge on how stress responses elicitated by poor performance might impact on non-REM respiration rates and sleep.

Abstract
BACKGROUND There is increasing evidence suggesting that patients with Borderline Personality Disorder (BPD) are at greater risk of developing cardiovascular diseases (CVD) compared to the general population. Homocysteine (Hcy) has been discussed as a serum marker for endothelial dysfunction as a mechanism involved in CVD and has been shown to be associated with numerous psychiatric conditions. Pathophysiologically, there seems to be a link between Hcy and psychological stress mediated by abnormal activity of the autonomic nervous system. Accordingly, the present study sought to examine Hcy in BPD and to explore possible associations with clinical parameters. METHODS Plasma Hcy levels as well as conventional cardiovascular risk factors, such as blood pressure, BMI, smoking habits, HbA1c, HDL, LDL, and cholesterol, were examined in 49 young female in-patients diagnosed with BPD and 50 psychologically healthy control subjects matched for age and sex. Assessment of borderline symptom severity, childhood trauma, exposure to chronic stress, and quality of sleep was performed using self-reported questionnaires. RESULTS BPD patients showed significantly higher mean plasma Hcy concentrations compared to controls, though below ranges considered pathological. Moreover, Hcy correlated significantly with the severity of childhood trauma, chronic stress, and subjective sleep disturbances. In a regression model BPD diagnosis was found to predict Hcy levels best. CONCLUSION In conclusion, young female BPD patients with no history of CVD show higher, though non-pathological, Hcy levels compared to healthy controls. Our findings seem to support the assumption that BPD is associated with increased risk of CVD, and that Hcy could serve as potential marker for risk evaluation of midlife CVD in BPD patients.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Poor sleep quality is common among nurses. This problem possibly results in negative emotional and psychological consequences in nurses which secondary affect their work performances. However, in Ethiopia, there is a paucity of information about poor sleep quality and associated factors among nurses. This study aimed to assess the prevalence of poor sleep quality and associated factors among nurses working at comprehensive specialized hospitals in Northwest Ethiopia. METHODS An institutional-based cross-sectional study was conducted among 542 nurses who worked at University of Gondar (UOG), Tibebe Ghion, Felege Hiwot Comprehensive Specialized Hospitals, Ethiopia, who were incorporated into the study through a simple random sampling technique from 1 May to 2 June 2021. The Pittsburgh sleep quality index (PSQI) with a cut score of above 5 was used to assess sleep quality using a structured self-administered questionnaire. Other tools used are Depression Anxiety Stress Scales (DASS-21), Shift Work sleep disorders (SWSD), and Oslo-3 social support scales. Epi-Data version 3.1 was used for data entry and SPSS version 25 was used for data analysis. A multivariable logistic regression analysis was performed to identify variables that have a significant association with poor sleep quality among nurse professionals. The degree of association was assessed using an odds ratio (OR) with a 95% confidence interval (CI) at a two-tailed p-value of <0.05. RESULTS A total of 510 nurses were included in the study with a response rate of 94%. The study showed that the overall prevalence of poor sleep quality among nurses was 75.5% (95% CI (71.8, 79.1). Being female (AOR = 1.72:95% CI = 1.19, 2.28), depressive symptoms (AOR = 2.24:95% CI = 1.24, 3.85), anxiety symptoms (AOR = 2.12: 95% CI = 1.23, 3.62), stress (AOR = 2.85: 95% CI = 1.67, 4.82) and current alcohol drinking (AOR = 1.84 :95% CI = 1.27, 3.13) were significantly associated with poor sleep quality. CONCLUSION The overall prevalence of poor sleep quality among nurses was high. Being female, depressive symptoms, anxiety symptoms, stress, and current alcohol drinking had been significantly associated with poor sleep quality. Therefore, it is essential to institute effective intervention strategies emphasizing contributing factors to poor sleep quality.

Abstract
Importance Stress may increase the risk of cardiovascular disease (CVD). Most studies on stress and CVD have been conducted in high-income Western countries, but whether stress is associated with CVD in other settings has been less well studied. Objective To investigate the association of a composite measure of psychosocial stress and the development of CVD events and mortality in a large prospective study involving populations from 21 high-, middle-, and low-income countries across 5 continents. Design, Setting, and Participants This population-based cohort study used data from the Prospective Urban Rural Epidemiology study, collected between January 2003 and March 2021. Participants included individuals aged 35 to 70 years living in 21 low-, middle-, and high-income countries. Data were analyzed from April 8 to June 15, 2021. Exposures All participants were assessed on a composite measure of psychosocial stress assessed at study entry using brief questionnaires concerning stress at work and home, major life events, and financial stress. Main Outcomes and Measures The outcomes of interest were stroke, major coronary heart disease (CHD), CVD, and all-cause mortality. Results A total of 118 706 participants (mean [SD] age 50.4 [9.6] years; 69 842 [58.8%] women and 48 864 [41.2%] men) without prior CVD and with complete baseline and follow-up data were included. Of these, 8699 participants (7.3%) reported high stress, 21 797 participants (18.4%) reported moderate stress, 34 958 participants (29.4%) reported low stress, and 53 252 participants (44.8%) reported no stress. High stress, compared with no stress, was more likely with younger age (mean [SD] age, 48.9 [8.9] years vs 51.1 [9.8] years), abdominal obesity (2981 participants [34.3%] vs 10 599 participants [19.9%]), current smoking (2319 participants [26.7%] vs 10 477 participants [19.7%]) and former smoking (1571 participants [18.1%] vs 3978 participants [7.5%]), alcohol use (4222 participants [48.5%] vs 13 222 participants [24.8%]), and family history of CVD (5435 participants [62.5%] vs 20 255 participants [38.0%]). During a median (IQR) follow-up of 10.2 (8.6-11.9) years, a total of 7248 deaths occurred. During the course of follow-up, there were 5934 CVD events, 4107 CHD events, and 2880 stroke events. Compared with no stress and after adjustment for age, sex, education, marital status, location, abdominal obesity, hypertension, smoking, diabetes, and family history of CVD, as the level of stress increased, there were increases in risk of death (low stress: hazard ratio [HR], 1.09 [95% CI, 1.03-1.16]; high stress: 1.17 [95% CI, 1.06-1.29]) and CHD (low stress: HR, 1.09 [95% CI, 1.01-1.18]; high stress: HR, 1.24 [95% CI, 1.08-1.42]). High stress, but not low or moderate stress, was associated with CVD (HR, 1.22 [95% CI, 1.08-1.37]) and stroke (HR, 1.30 [95% CI, 1.09-1.56]) after adjustment. Conclusions and Relevance This cohort study found that higher psychosocial stress, measured as a composite score of self-perceived stress, life events, and financial stress, was significantly associated with mortality as well as with CVD, CHD, and stroke events.

Abstract
Objective The COVID-19 pandemic has strongly affected daily habits and psychological wellbeing, and many studies point to large modifications in several sleep and sleep-related domains. Nevertheless, pre-sleep arousal during the pandemic has been substantially overlooked. Since hyperarousal represents one of the main factors for the development and the perpetuation of chronic insomnia disorder, the assessment of variables associated with high levels of pre-sleep arousal during the pandemic is clinically relevant. The study aimed to assess the prevalence and predictors of perceived sleep quality and pre-sleep arousal in an Italian sample during the COVID-19 lockdown. Methods We used an online survey to collect self-reported sociodemographic, environmental, clinical, sleep, and sleep-related data. Our final sample included 761 participants. Results Beyond a high frequency of poor sleep quality, depressive and stress symptoms, our results show that almost half of the sample suffered from clinically relevant levels of at least one component (ie, cognitive, somatic) of pre-sleep arousal. Subjects with greater pre-sleep arousal exhibited poorer sleep quality. Also, sleep quality was strongly associated with somatic and cognitive pre-sleep arousal. Regarding the predictors of sleep and sleep-related measures, depressive and event-related stress symptoms were the main factors associated with both poor sleep quality and pre-sleep arousal components. Moreover, specific sociodemographic and environmental variables were uniquely related to sleep quality, cognitive or somatic pre-sleep arousal. Conclusions These findings suggest that the assessment of specific sleep-related factors (ie, pre-sleep arousal), together with more global measures of sleep quality, may be crucial to depict the complex impact of the pandemic on sleep, and to help prevent and counteract the spread of insomnia symptoms.

Abstract
The objective of this study was to examine the link between systemic and general psychosocial stress and cardiovascular disease (CVD) risk in a group of U.S. Latinos as a function of acculturation and education within the blended guiding conceptual framework of the biopsychosocial model of the stress process plus the reserve capacity model. We analyzed data from self-identifying Mexican-origin adults (n = 396, 56.9% female, Mage = 58.2 years, 55.5% < 12 years of education, 79% U.S.-born) from the Texas City Stress and Health Study. We used established measures of perceived stress (general stress), neighborhood stress and discrimination (systemic stress) to capture psychosocial stress, our primary predictor. We used the atherosclerotic CVD calculator to assess 10-year CVD risk, our primary outcome. This calculator uses demographics, cholesterol, blood pressure, and history of hypertension, smoking, and diabetes to compute CVD risk in the next 10 years. We also created an acculturation index using English-language use, childhood interaction, and preservation of cultural values. Participants reported years of education. Contrary to expectations, findings showed that higher levels of all three forms of psychosocial stress, perceived stress, neighborhood stress, and perceived discrimination, predicted lower 10-year CVD risk. Acculturation and education did not moderate the effects of psychosocial stress on 10-year CVD risk. Contextualized within the biopsychosocial and reserve capacity framework, we interpret our findings such that participants who accurately reported their stressors may have turned to their social networks to handle the stress, thereby reducing their risk for CVD. We highlight the importance of examining strengths within the sociocultural environment when considering cardiovascular inequities among Latinos.

Abstract
The present study goal was to provide further information on the association of maltreatment experiences in childhood (CM) and impaired sleep taking the hyperarousal theory of insomnia and stress reaction into account. In all, 62 participants took part in the study. CM history (Childhood Trauma Questionnaire) and subjective sleep quality (Pittsburgh Sleep Quality Index) were assessed before study commencement. In addition, participants wore an actigraph for 6-7 consecutive nights and completed a sleep log during this time. After 3-4 days, the participants took part in a laboratory stress paradigm (Maastricht Acute Stress Test) with 29 participants in the experimental and 31 in the control condition. Saliva cortisol samples were taken before and after the experiment and heart rate variability was assessed. CM was positively correlated with impaired subjectively assessed sleep in adulthood. The stress manipulation led to heightened subjective and physiological stress. Although lower cortisol changes after and lower mean heart rate values during the stress induction were found in the CM group, the differences were not statistically significant. There was no observable sleep reactivity on the stress induction. Stress and CM appear to have long-term effects on subjective sleep. Acute social stress does not directly worsen sleep quality, neither in participants with nor without a history of CM. However, the association underlines the importance of prevention and intervention. When treating sleep impairments, potential CM experiences should be taken into account.

Abstract
Opioid use disorder (OUD) is a national public health concern. Craving, stress, and exposure to conditioned drug cues are implicated in risk of relapse to opioids. Although impaired sleep has been implicated in risk of relapse to other substances of misuse, little research to date has examined the relationship between sleep and craving in individuals with OUD. The present study examined sleep as a moderator of the relationship between craving and stress in a randomized controlled human laboratory study. Individuals with current OUD (N = 39) completed a 1-night hospital stay to control for factors that may affect craving, stress, and sleep. Sleep was monitored via an actigraphy watch and the Pittsburgh Sleep Quality Index. The next morning, participants were randomized to a 15-min laboratory stress task or a no-stress condition. All participants were then exposed to a 15-min opioid cue paradigm, and craving was measured via self-report. Moderation models were conducted to evaluate whether the sleep indices moderated the relationship between stress condition (independent variable) and craving (dependent variable). Average self-reported nightly sleep duration moderated the relationship between stress condition and craving for participants in the no-stress condition (b = 0.95, p < .05). Specifically, participants in the no-stress condition with lower average nightly sleep duration exhibited significantly greater craving following the opioid cue paradigm. Although preliminary, the findings add to the literature on craving, stress, and sleep among individuals with OUD. Abstract
STUDY OBJECTIVES Stress is associated with poor and short sleep, but the temporal order of these variables remains unclear. This study examined the temporal and bi-directional associations between stress and sleep and explored the moderating role of baseline sleep complaints, using daily, intensive longitudinal designs. METHODS Participants were 326 young adults (Mage = 23.24 ± 5.46), providing >2,500 nights of sleep altogether. Prospective total sleep time (TST), sleep onset latency (SOL), wake after sleep onset (WASO), and sleep efficiency (SE) were measured using actigraphy and sleep diaries. Perceived stress was reported three times daily between: 11:00-15:00, 15:30-19:30, and 20:00-02:00. Sleep complaints were measured at baseline using the PROMIS sleep disturbance scale. Within- and between-person sleep and stress variables were tested using cross-lagged multilevel models. RESULTS Controlling for covariates and lagged outcomes, within-person effects showed that higher evening stress predicted shorter actigraphic and self-reported TST (both p < .01). Conversely, shorter actigraphic and self-reported TST predicted higher next-day stress (both p < .001). Longer self-reported SOL and WASO (both p < .001), as well as lower actigraphic (p < .01) and self-reported SE (p < .001), predicted higher next-day stress. Between-person effects emerged only for self-reported TST predicting stress (p < .01). No significant results were found for the moderating role of baseline sleep complaints. CONCLUSIONS Results demonstrated bi-directional relations between stress and sleep quantity, and a consistent direction of worse sleep quantity and continuity predicting higher next-day stress. Results highlighted within-individual daily variation as being more important than between-individual differences when examining sleep and daytime functioning associations.

Purpose
Poor quality of sleep has a negative effect on academic performance of medical students. Quantity and quality of sleep in addition to average sleep time are strongly linked with students’ learning abilities, poor academic performance and poor interpersonal relationship which predispose them to mental illnesses. This study is aimed to assess magnitude and correlates of sleep quality among medical students in Ethiopia.
Method
An institutional based cross-sectional study was conducted among 576 undergraduate medical students. Data was collected by using interviewer administered structured questionnaires. Pittsburgh Sleep Quality Index (PSQI) was used to assess sleep quality. The collected data were entered in to Epi-data version 3.1and analyzed using SPSS version 20. Logistic regression was used to identify the potential determinants of quality of sleep among undergraduate medical students. P-values less than 0.05 were considered statistically significant and strength of the association was presented by adjusted odds ratio with 95% C.I.
Result
The prevalence of poor sleep quality among undergraduate medical students was 62% (95%CI, 57.9, 65.3). The mean age (±SD) of the respondents was 21.5(±2.4), with age ranging from 18 to 28 and about 310 (53.8%) were males. Factors like, being depressed (AOR = 1.92,95%CI 1.16,3.19), poor social support (AOR = 5.39,95%CI 2.33,2.49), being stressed (AOR = 2.04,95%CI 1.26,3.31), and poor sleep hygiene (AOR = 3.01,95%CI 1.75,5.18) were associated with poor sleep quality at p-value < 0.05. Findings also showed that, one unit increase in grade point average was associated with 81.5% decrease (AOR = 0.185, 95%CI 0.13, 0.28) in poor sleep quality.
Conclusion
A substantial proportion of medical students are affected by poor sleep quality. Routine screening of sleep quality, sleep hygiene, depression and stress is warranted. Moreover, it is better to educating medical students about proper sleep hygiene and the consequences of poor sleep.

Abstract
Background Good sleep hygiene plays an important role in human health. Medical students are notorious for insufficient and irregular sleep habits which are linked with students' learning abilities, poor academic performance, and poor interpersonal relationship which predispose them to mental illnesses. However, it has not been studied among medical students in Ethiopia. Method This institution-based cross-sectional study was conducted among 576 undergraduate medical students selected by using a stratified sampling technique. Sleep hygiene (SHI) was assessed by a 13-item sleep hygiene questionnaire. Binary logistic regression was used to identify the potential determinants of poor sleep hygiene among undergraduate medical students. Variables with p values less than 0.05 were considered statistically significant, and the strength of the association was presented by adjusted odds ratio with 95% C.I. Result The prevalence of poor sleep hygiene practice among undergraduate medical students was 48.1% (95% 43.7, 52.1). After adjusting for the possible confounders, being female (AOR = 1.53, 95% CI 1.03, 2.26), having depressive symptoms (AOR = 3.55, 95% CI 2.26, 5.59), with stress symptoms (AOR = 2.41, 95% CI 1.61, 3.60), and having anxiety symptoms (AOR = 2.2, 95% CI 1.42, 3.31) were associated with poor sleep hygiene practice at p value < 0.05. Conclusion Almost half of the medical students had poor sleep hygiene practice. Routine screening of depressive and stress symptoms and education about sleep hygiene are warranted among medical students.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Previous studies have only investigated how symptom presentation and socio-demographic factors influence care-seeking for low back pain (LBP). However, the influence of health and lifestyle factors remains unclear, and the potential confounding effects of aggregated familial factors (including genetics and the early shared environment) has not been considered extensively. METHODS A cross-sectional analysis was performed on 1605 twins enrolled in the Murcia Twin Registry (Spain). The outcome was seeking medical care for LBP and various self-reported demographic, health and lifestyle factors were considered predictors. All variables except sleep quality and diabetes were collected in 2013, which were cross-referenced from 2009 to 2010. A multivariate logistic regression model was performed on the total sample, followed by a co-twin case-control analysis. RESULTS The only significant factor found to increase the odds of seeking medical care for LBP without being affected by familial factors was poor sleep quality (total sample OR = 1.58, 95%CI 1.24-2.01; case-control OR = 1.75, 95%CI 1.14-2.69). The factors that were associated with reduced odds of seeking medical care for LBP and not confounded by familial factors were male sex (case-control OR = 0.55, 95%CI 0.33-0.93), alcohol intake (case-control OR = 0.90, 95%CI 0.82-0.99) and a history of diabetes (case-control OR = 0.50, 95%CI 0.25-0.97). No other factors significantly influenced medical care-seeking for LBP. CONCLUSIONS People reporting poor sleep quality are more likely to seek medical care for LBP in the long term, with this relationship being independent from aggregated familial factors. Conversely, males, people reporting higher alcohol intake, and people with a history of diabetes are less likely to seek medical care for LBP. SIGNIFICANCE This is the first study investigating the factors that influence seeking medical care for LBP, while adjusting for the influence of familial factors using a co-twin control design. Poor sleep quality is associated with seeking medical care for LBP in the long term and does not appear to be confounded by familial factors. Early screening for indicators of poor sleep quality and appropriate referral to interventions for improving sleep quality or reducing pain in sleep may improve LBP management.

Abstract
Objective/Background: Sleep disturbance is prevalent among patients with heart failure (HF) and is associated with increased morbidity and mortality. Stress also affects health and quality of life among patients with cardiovascular disease and likely plays a prominent role in HF. However, little is known about the associations between stress and sleep among HF patients.Participants: One hundred fifty-three stable New York Heart Association (NYHA) Classification I-IV HF patients with at least low symptoms of insomnia (Mage:63.0 ± 12.8, 42% Women).Methods: We examined baseline stress, sleep disturbance, and sleep-related characteristics from a randomized controlled trial of cognitive behavioral therapy for insomnia, including the Perceived Stress Scale, Insomnia Severity Index, Pittsburgh Sleep Quality Index, Epworth Sleepiness Scale, Sleep Disturbance Questionnaire, Dysfunctional Beliefs about Sleep Scale, PROMIS Cognitive Ability, SF-36 Mental Health, and wrist actigraphy. We used Pearson correlations and general linear models to assess stress-sleep associations, including the potential moderating effects of sex and symptom severity (NYHA).Results: There were moderate-to-large correlations between stress and self-reported sleep disturbance, dysfunctional beliefs about sleep, cognitive ability, and mental health (p's < 0.01). High stress was associated with more objectively-measured (i.e., actigraph-assessed) awakenings and sleep fragmentation among women than men (β = - 0.04, p < 0.01; β = - 0.71, p = 0.04). Relationships between stress and objectively-measured sleep did not vary by symptom severity.Conclusions: Perceived stress is related to sleep disturbance among HF patients, and effects may be sex-dependent. Subsequent research should determine the temporal links between sleep and stress, and optimal opportunities for intervention among HF patients.

Abstract
OBJECTIVE Characterize firefighters' acute stress and tiredness by duty status (ie, "off night/day," "on night/day"). METHODS Thirty nine career firefighters completed three, eight-day smartphone-based ecological momentary assessment periods with seven surveys per day assessing stress and tiredness. Mixed-effects location scale models examined duty status effects on stress and tiredness. RESULTS Firefighters' lowest stress and tiredness levels were when off-duty (β = 16.27 and β = 24.71, respectively) and their highest levels were when on-duty (β = 24.47 and β = 32.18, respectively). Within-subject effects of duty status accounted for a larger proportion of variability in stress and tiredness for all duty types, except for stress when "on-duty night/off-duty day." CONCLUSIONS Firefighters had more similar stress and tiredness outcomes when they were on-duty and less similar outcomes when off-duty. This could be due to firefighters having more similar experiences when they are on- versus off-duty.

Abstract
Three studies examined how various forms of stress uniquely contribute to physical illness. We compared negative affect and perceived stress in Study 1, neuroticism and perceived stress in Study 2, and negative affect, neuroticism, and perceived stress in Study 3. We also controlled for health-related covariates (i.e., exercise, nutrition, substance use, and BMI). In all three studies (ns = 271, 577, and 300), participants completed online surveys for course credit. The results of Study 1 demonstrated that both negative affect and perceived stress predicted physical illness. In Study 2, neuroticism and perceived stress each predicted illness symptoms, and an additional interaction between neuroticism and perceived stress, were found. In Study 3, where all three stress factors were included, only negative affect predicted illness symptoms. Taken together, these results suggest that negative affect uniquely explains most of the variance in physical illness symptoms while controlling for other forms of stress.

Abstract
OBJECTIVE Cancer caregivers are at increased risk for cardiovascular disease (CVD) and mortality. The aims of this study were to examine psychosocial and behavioral predictors of metabolic syndrome, an intermediate endpoint of CVD. METHODS Cancer caregivers were administered a battery of questionnaires assessing sociodemographic characteristics, depressive symptoms, perceived stress, caregiver quality of life, sleep, physical activity, alcohol and tobacco use, social support, relationship quality, and loneliness. Metabolic syndrome was defined using the American Heart Association guidelines and the National Cholesterol Education Program's Adult Treatment Panel (ATP) III, which includes the presence of at least three of the following abnormalities: blood pressure, glucose, abdominal girth, high-density lipoprotein (HDL), and triglycerides. RESULTS Of the 104 caregivers, 77% were female, 94% were Caucasian, and the mean age was 59.5 (SD = 12.8). Of the 104 caregivers, 35.6% reported depressive symptoms in the clinical range of the Center for Epidemiologic Studies-Depression (CES-D) and 69.2% reported Perceived Stress Scale scores at least one standard deviation above the general population norms. A total of 16.3% of caregivers currently used tobacco, 28.8% consumed alcohol, and 26.7% were overweight (BMI = 25-29.9) and 48.5% were obese (BMI ≥ 30). Forty-nine percent of the caregivers met the criteria for metabolic syndrome. After age, gender, and race were adjusted, the following remained as significant predictors of metabolic syndrome: low levels of caregiver quality of life (Odds Ratio (OR) = 1.067; 95% CI, 1.019-1.117; P = .006), high levels of hostility (OR = 1.142; 95% CI, 1.030-1.267; P = .012), and current alcohol use (OR = 4.193; 95% CI, 1.174-14.978; P = .027). CONCLUSION Development of interventions to reduce the risk of metabolic syndrome in cancer caregivers is recommended.

Abstract
Objective: This study aimed to establish the determinants of perceived sleep quality over a longer period of time, taking into account the separate contributions of actigraphy-based sleep measures and self-reported sleep indices. Methods: Fifty participants (52 ± 6.6 years; 27 females) completed two consecutive weeks of home monitoring, during which they kept a sleep-wake diary while their sleep was monitored using a wrist-worn actigraph. The diary included questions on perceived sleep quality, sleep-wake information, and additional factors such as well-being and stress. The data were analyzed using multilevel models to compare a model that included only actigraphy-based sleep measures (model Acti) to a model that included only self-reported sleep measures to explain perceived sleep quality (model Self). In addition, a model based on the self-reported sleep measures and extended with nonsleep-related factors was analyzed to find the most significant determinants of perceived sleep quality (model Extended). Results: Self-reported sleep measures (model Self) explained 61% of the total variance, while actigraphy-based sleep measures (model Acti) only accounted for 41% of the perceived sleep quality. The main predictors in the self-reported model were number of awakenings during the night, sleep onset latency, and wake time after sleep onset. In the extended model, the number of awakenings during the night and total sleep time of the previous night were the strongest determinants of perceived sleep quality, with 64% of the variance explained. Conclusion: In our cohort, perceived sleep quality was mainly determined by self-reported sleep measures and less by actigraphy-based sleep indices. These data further stress the importance of taking multiple nights into account when trying to understand perceived sleep quality.
