Abstract
BACKGROUND Systemic low-grade inflammation may be a pathophysiological mechanism in a subtype of depression. In this study we investigate a novel candidate mechanism of inflammatory depression - Selective Glomerular Hypofiltration Syndromes (SGHS) - which are characterized by a reduced estimated glomerular filtration rate (eGFR) based on cystatin C (cysC) relative to eGFR based on creatinine (crea). SGHS have been associated with increased blood levels of pro-inflammatory markers, but have never been investigated in a sample of depressed individuals. METHOD The prevalence of SGHS was compared between 313 patients with difficult-to-treat depression and 73 controls. Since there is no single established eGFRcysC/eGFRcrea-ratio cut-off to define SGHS, several cut-offs were investigated in relation to a depression diagnosis, inflammation, and symptom severity. Plasma inflammatory markers tumor necrosis factor alpha (TNF-α), interferon gamma (IFN-γ), interleukin (IL)-6, IL-8, and IL-10 were available from 276 depressed patients. We examined mediation effects of IL-6 on the relationship between SGHS and depression. RESULTS Depressed patients were more likely to have SGHS compared to controls defining SGHS as either eGFRcysC/eGFRcrea-ratio < 0.9 (33.2 % vs 20.5 %, p = 0.035) or < 0.8 (15.7 % vs 5.5 %, p = 0.023). Lower eGFRcysC/eGFRcrea-ratio was associated with higher levels of inflammatory markers in depressed patients. IL-6 partly mediated the relationship between SGHS and depression. CONCLUSION This is the first study to demonstrate a link between SGHS and inflammatory depression. If replicated in independent and longitudinal cohorts, this may prove to be a relevant pathophysiological mechanism in some cases of depression that could be targeted in future intervention and prevention studies.

Abstract
Major depressive disorder (MDD) is associated with interoceptive processing dysfunctions, but the molecular mechanisms underlying this dysfunction are poorly understood. This study combined brain neuronal-enriched extracellular vesicle (NEEV) technology and serum markers of inflammation and metabolism with Functional Magnetic Resonance Imaging (fMRI) to identify the contribution of gene regulatory pathways, in particular micro-RNA (miR) 93, to interoceptive dysfunction in MDD. Individuals with MDD (n = 41) and healthy comparisons (HC; n = 35) provided blood samples and completed an interoceptive attention task during fMRI. EVs were separated from plasma using a precipitation method. NEEVs were enriched by magnetic streptavidin bead immunocapture utilizing a neural adhesion marker (L1CAM/CD171) biotinylated antibody. The origin of NEEVs was validated with two other neuronal markers - neuronal cell adhesion molecule (NCAM) and ATPase Na+/K+ transporting subunit alpha 3 (ATP1A3). NEEV specificities were confirmed by flow cytometry, western blot, particle size analyzer, and transmission electron microscopy. NEEV small RNAs were purified and sequenced. Results showed that: (1) MDD exhibited lower NEEV miR-93 expression than HC; (2) within MDD but not HC, those individuals with the lowest NEEV miR-93 expression had the highest serum concentrations of interleukin (IL)-1 receptor antagonist, IL-6, tumor necrosis factor, and leptin; and (3) within HC but not MDD, those participants with the highest miR-93 expression showed the strongest bilateral dorsal mid-insula activation during interoceptive versus exteroceptive attention. Since miR-93 is regulated by stress and affects epigenetic modulation by chromatin re-organization, these results suggest that healthy individuals but not MDD participants show an adaptive epigenetic regulation of insular function during interoceptive processing. Future investigations will need to delineate how specific internal and external environmental conditions contribute to miR-93 expression in MDD and what molecular mechanisms alter brain responsivity to body-relevant signals.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Limited evidence exists about suicide risk in persons with polycystic ovary syndrome (PCOS). OBJECTIVE To assess suicide risk in persons with PCOS, accounting for psychiatric comorbid conditions and age group. DESIGN Cohort study. SETTING Data from the Taiwanese nationwide database from 1997 to 2012. PATIENTS A cohort of 18 960 patients diagnosed with PCOS, each matched with control participants in a 1:10 ratio on the basis of age, psychiatric comorbid conditions, urbanization level, and income. Suicide attempts were evaluated using Cox regression models. MEASUREMENTS Suicide risk with hazard ratios (HRs). RESULTS Participants with PCOS had a notable 8.47-fold increase in risk for suicide attempt compared with the control group (HR, 8.47 [95% CI, 7.54 to 9.51]), after adjustment for demographic characteristics, psychiatric comorbid conditions, Charlson Comorbidity Index scores, and frequency of all-cause clinical visits. The elevated risk was evident across the adolescent (HR, 5.38 [CI, 3.93 to 7.37]), young adult (<40 years; HR, 9.15 [CI, 8.03 to 10.42]), and older adult (HR, 3.75 [CI, 2.23 to 6.28]) groups. Sensitivity analyses involving the exclusion of data from the first year or the first 3 years of observation yielded consistent results. LIMITATION Potential underestimation of PCOS and mental disorder prevalence due to use of administrative claims data; lack of clinical data, such as body mass index and depressive symptoms; and no assessment of a confounding effect of valproic acid exposure. CONCLUSION This study underscores the heightened risk for suicide attempt that persons with PCOS face, even after adjustment for demographics, psychiatric comorbid conditions, physical conditions, and all-cause clinical visits. This suggests the importance of routine monitoring of mental health and suicide risk in persons diagnosed with PCOS. Abstract
BACKGROUND Studies suggest a correlation between excessive sedentary behavior, insufficient physical activity, and an elevated likelihood of experiencing psychiatric disorder. Nonetheless, the precise influence of sedentary behavior and physical activity on psychiatric disorder remains uncertain. Hence, the objective of this research was to investigate the possible causal relationship between sedentary behavior, physical activity, and the susceptibility to psychiatric disorder (depression, schizophrenia and bipolar disorder), utilizing a two-sample Mendelian randomization (MR) approach. METHODS Potential genetic instruments related to sedentary leisure behaviors were identified from the UK Biobank database, specifically a summary-level genome-wide association study (GWAS) involving 422,218 individuals of European descent. The UK Biobank database also provided the GWAS data for physical activity. Primary analysis was performed using inverse variance weighting (IVW) to assess the causal relationship between sedentary behavior, physical activity, and the risk of psychiatric disorder (depression, schizophrenia and bipolar disorder). Sensitivity analysis was conducted using Cochran's Q test, the MR-Egger intercept test, the MR-pleiotropy RESidual sum and outlier test, leave-one-out analysis, and funnel plot analysis. RESULTS According to the IVW analysis, there was a significant association between genetically predicted leisure television watching and an increased risk of depression (odds ratio [OR] = 1.027, 95% confidence interval [CI]: 1.001-1.053; P = 0.04). The IVW analysis also indicated that there was a decreased risk of depression associated with fraction accelerations of > 425 milligravities, as measured by accelerometers (OR = 0.951, 95%CI: 0.914-0.989; P = 0.013). The other MR methods obtained consistent but non-significant results in the same direction. However, there was no evidence of a causal association between genetic liability for moderate-to-vigorous physical activity, accelerometer-assessed physical activity, computer use, or driving and the risk of depression. Furthermore, IVW analysis has also found that driving has a slight effect in reducing the risk of schizophrenia (OR = 0.092, 95%CI: 0.010-0.827; P = 0.033), while leisure television viewing has a significant protective effect against the onset of bipolar disorder (OR = 0.719, 95%CI: 0.567-0.912; P = 0.006). CONCLUSION The study provides compelling evidence of a link between depression, bipolar disorder, and excessive TV watching. Furthermore, it suggests that higher accelerometer-assessed fraction accelerations of > 425 milligravities can serve as a genetic protective factor against depression. To mitigate the risk of developing depression, it is advisable to reduce sedentary activities, particularly television watching, and prioritize engaging in vigorous physical exercise.

Abstract
Background Psychiatric patients are at high risk of readmission, and a high body mass index has previously been shown as a risk factor. We sought to replicate this finding and 1) to prospectively assess the association of metabolic syndrome and its five components with readmission in psychiatric hospitals and 2) to identify other clinical and sociodemographic predictors of readmission. Methods Between 2007 and 2019, data on 16727 admissions of 7786 adult and elderly patients admitted to the Department of Psychiatry of the Lausanne University Hospital, were collected. Metabolic syndrome was defined according to the International Diabetes Federation definition. Cox frailty models were used to investigate the associations between readmission and metabolic disturbances. Results A total of 2697 (35%) patients were readmitted to our psychiatric hospital. Novel risk factors for readmission in non-smokers were identified, including being overweight (HR=1.26; 95%CI=[1.05; 1.51]) or obese (HR=1.33; 95%CI=[1.08; 1.62]), displaying hypertriglyceridemia (HR=1.21; 95%CI=[1.04; 1.40]) and metabolic syndrome (HR=1.26; 95%CI=[1.02; 1.55]). Central obesity and hyperglycemia increased the risk of readmission when considering the Health of the Nation Outcome Scales variable. In first-episode psychosis patients, obesity (HR=2.23; 95%CI=[1.14; 4.30]) and high-density lipoprotein hypocholesterolemia (HR=1.90; 95%CI=[1.14; 3.20]) doubled the risk of readmission. Conclusion The observed interaction between smoking and metabolic variables are compatible with a ceiling effect; metabolic variables increase the risk of readmission in non-smokers but not in smokers who are already at higher risk. Future studies should determine whether better metabolic monitoring and treatment can reduce readmission risk.

Abstract
OBJECTIVE Loneliness is linked to interleukin 6 (IL-6), a marker of systemic inflammation, which chronically has deleterious effects on physical and mental health across the adult life span. This study investigated cross-sectional relationships among loneliness, IL-6, demographics, multimorbidity, depression, obesity, friendship quantity, and slowed gait. METHODS Data from the Midlife Development in the United States Biomarker Project, a national adult sample ( N = 822; age range, 26-78 years) was used for this study. The PROCESS macro tested the hypothesis that IL-6 would mediate the relationship between loneliness and gait, after adjusting for demographic and health risk factors. RESULTS Age ( β = 0.292, p < .001), sex ( β = 0.197, p < .001), body mass index (BMI, β = 0.374, p < .001), waist-hip ratio ( β = 0.242, p < .001), and loneliness ( β = 0.089, p = .025) but not multimorbidity ( β = 0.043, p = .20), depression history ( β = 0.022, p = .47), depression symptoms ( β = 0.036, p = .28), and number of friends ( β = 0.022, p = .46) contributed to the variance in IL-6. Serial mediation analyses supported the chained effect of loneliness on walking time through BMI and IL-6. Results also showed specific indirect effects of BMI and IL-6 on walking time, suggesting more than one pathway by which loneliness influences health. CONCLUSIONS These results suggest that loneliness may increase the risk of systemic inflammation, leading to slowed gait and adverse health outcomes. Psychosocial interventions that address loneliness may provide an optimal treatment target for reducing inflammation and preventing declines in health.

Abstract
Polycystic ovary syndrome (PCOS) is one of the most prevalent gynecological endocrine conditions affecting reproductive women. It can feature a variety of symptoms, such as obesity, insulin resistance, skin conditions, and infertility. Women with PCOS are susceptible to illnesses including mood disorders, diabetes, hypertension, and dyslipidemia. Among them, depression is the most common in PCOS and has a detrimental effect on quality of life. Depression may occasionally develop due to the pathological traits of PCOS, but its exact pathogenesis in PCOS have eluded researchers to date. Therefore, there is an urgent need to explore the pathogenesis and treatments of depression in PCOS. The present review discusses the epidemiology of depression in PCOS, potential pathogenic mechanisms underlying PCOS and depression, as well as some potential factors causing depression in PCOS, including obesity, insulin resistance, hyperandrogenism, inflammation, and infertility. Meanwhile, some common treatment strategies for depression in PCOS, such as lifestyle intervention, acupuncture, oral contraceptive pills, psychological intervention, and insulin-sensitizer, are also reviewed. To fully understand the pathogenesis and treatment of depression in PCOS, a need remains for future large-scale multi-center randomized controlled trials and in-depth mechanism studies. Abstract
OBJECTIVE Postpartum depression (PPD) has deleterious effects on both maternal and child outcomes. Poor maternal nutrition during pregnancy has been implicated in the development of PPD. This review aimed to explore the association between the overall dietary intake patterns during pregnancy and the development of PPD. METHODS A literature search was performed in PubMed, Embase, Scopus, CINAHL, and PsycINFO databases for relevant randomized controlled trials, cohort and cross-sectional studies published up to 17th September 2020. Included studies assessed at least one dietary pattern during pregnancy and reported on PPD. The Newcastle Ottawa Scale and the Joanna Briggs Institute critical appraisal tools were used to assess the quality of methodology. A narrative analysis was conducted. RESULTS Ten studies (eight cohort and two cross-sectional) were included with substantial heterogeneity in measurements of dietary intake exposures and PPD. The studies identified several types of healthy dietary patterns, including a 'healthy', 'health conscious', 'Japanese', 'high-glycemic index/glycemic load', 'Vegetable', 'Nut-Fruit', 'Seafood', and 'compliance with the Australian Dietary Guidelines'. The 'Western', 'unhealthy', 'Beverage', 'Cereal-Meat', and 'Egg' were labelled as unhealthy dietary patterns. Four of the eight studies showed an inverse association between adherence to healthy diets and risk of PPD, whereas only one of the seven studies showed that adherence to unhealthy diets was associated with increased risk of PPD. Methodological quality of the studies varied across the sample. CONCLUSIONS Our findings indicate that adherence to a healthy diet may be beneficial for PPD. However, the relationship between unhealthy diets and PPD needs to be corroborated by more high-quality studies.

Abstract
PURPOSE Our study aimed to characterize and objectify the prevalence of psychiatric disorders and the use of psychotropic drugs in patients interested in undergoing aesthetic surgery. The psychiatric profile of this population is particularly interesting and is related to self-perception and the general concept of beauty. METHODS We conducted an observational, retrospective, and bicenter study of 2092 patients seen in plastic surgery departments. Data on general characteristics, pathology, psychiatric history (PH), use of psychotropic drugs, addictions, surgical requests, and surgical complications were recorded and analyzed. RESULTS Based on our inclusion criteria, we selected 524 patients. The prevalence of psychiatric disorders was 32.25%. The prevalence of depressive disorders (19.27%), anxiety disorders (8.21%), and sleep-wake cycle disorders (7.06%) should be noted. Comparing the population with psychiatric history (PH+) and without psychiatric history (PH-), significant differences were found in patient ethnicity, addictions (tobacco, 37.50% vs 15.00%; drugs, 3.26% vs 0.59%), and comorbidities. In the 66.86% (n = 113) of PH+ patients, the plastic surgeon did not record the presence of psychiatric disorders in the medical record. DISCUSSION This study offers a broad view of the prevalence and characteristics of psychiatric disorders and the use of psychotropic drugs among patients who want to undergo aesthetic surgery. The prevalence of psychiatric problems in the study population is higher than in the general population (32.25% vs 15.02%). CONCLUSIONS Our results suggest that plastic surgeons should be properly trained to manage these patients. A multidisciplinary approach involving plastic surgeons, psychiatrists, and psychologists is advocated.

Abstract
Psychoneuroimmunology and immunopsychiatry are quickly approaching a critical point where the clinical translatability of their evidence base will be tested. To maximize chances for translational success, we believe researchers must adopt causal inference techniques that augment the causal relevance of estimates given theorized causal structures. To illustrate the utility of incorporating causal inference perspectives into psychoneuroimmunology, we applied directed acyclic graphs and a combination of empirical and simulated data to demonstrate the consequences of controlling for adiposity when testing the association between inflammation and depression under the plausible causal structure of increases in adipose tissue leading to greater inflammation that in turn promotes depression. Effect size estimates were pulled from a dataset combining the Midlife in the United States 2 (MIDUS-2) and MIDUS Refresher datasets. Data were extracted and used to simulate data reflecting an adiposity → inflammation → depression causal structure. Next, a Monte Carlo simulation study with 1,000 iterations and three sample size scenarios (Ns = 100, 250, and 500) was conducted testing whether controlling for adiposity when estimating the relation between inflammation and depression influenced the precision of this estimate. Across all simulation scenarios, controlling for adiposity reduced precision of the inflammation → depression estimate, suggesting that researchers primarily interested in quantifying inflammation → depression associations should not control for adiposity. This work thus underscores the importance of incorporating causal inference approaches into psychoneuroimmunological research.

Abstract
Concurrent with recent insights into the neuroprogressive nature of depression, ketamine shows promise in interfering with several neuroprogressive factors, and has been suggested to reverse neuropathological patterns seen in depression. These insights come at a time of great need for novel approaches, as prevalence is rising and current treatment options remain inadequate for a large number of people. The rapidly growing literature on ketamine's antidepressant potential has yielded multiple proposed mechanisms of action, many of which have implications for recently elucidated aspects of depressive pathology. This review aims to provide the reader with an understanding of neuroprogressive aspects of depressive pathology and how ketamine is suggested to act on it. Literature was identified through PubMed and Google Scholar, and the reference lists of retrieved articles. When reviewing the evidence of depressive pathology, a picture emerges of four elements interacting with each other to facilitate progressive worsening, namely stress, inflammation, neurotoxicity and neurodegeneration. Ketamine acts on all of these levels of pathology, with rapid and potent reductions of depressive symptoms. Converging evidence suggests that ketamine works to increase stress resilience and reverse stress-induced dysfunction, modulate systemic inflammation and neuroinflammation, attenuate neurotoxic processes and glial dysfunction, and facilitate synaptogenesis rather than neurodegeneration. Still, much remains to be revealed about ketamine's antidepressant mechanisms of action, and research is lacking on the durability of effect. The findings discussed herein calls for more longitudinal approaches when determining efficacy and its relation to neuroprogressive factors, and could provide relevant considerations for clinical implementation.

Abstract
Depression is a common neuropsychiatric disorder with long-term recurrent depressed mood, pain and despair, pessimism and anxiety, and even suicidal tendencies as the main symptoms. Depression usually induces or aggravates the development of other related diseases, such as sleep disorders and endocrine disorders. In today's society, the incidence of depression is increasing worldwide, and its pathogenesis is complex and generally believed to be related to genetic, psychological, environmental, and biological factors. Current studies have shown the key role of glial cells in the development of depression, and it is noteworthy that some recent evidence suggests that the development of depression may be closely related to viral infections, such as SARS-CoV-2, BoDV-1, ZIKV, HIV, and HHV6, which infect the organism and cause some degree of glial cells, such as astrocytes, oligodendrocytes, and microglia. This can affect the transmission of related proteins, neurotransmitters, and cytokines, which in turn leads to neuroinflammation and depression. Based on the close relationship between viruses and depression, this paper provides an in-depth analysis of the new mechanism of virus-induced depression, which is expected to provide a new perspective on the mechanism of depression and a new idea for the diagnosis of depression in the future.

Abstract
Major depressive disorder (MDD) is associated with interoceptive processing dysfunctions, but the molecular mechanisms underlying this dysfunction are poorly understood. This study combined brain Neuronal-Enriched Extracellular Vesicle (NEEV) technology and serum markers of inflammation and metabolism with Functional Magnetic Resonance Imaging (fMRI) to identify the contribution of gene regulatory pathways, in particular micro-RNA (miR) 93, to interoceptive dysfunction in MDD. Individuals with MDD (n = 44) and healthy comparisons (HC; n = 35) provided blood samples and completed an interoceptive attention task during fMRI. EVs were separated from plasma using a precipitation method. NEEVs were enriched by magnetic streptavidin bead immunocapture utilizing a neural adhesion marker (CD171) biotinylated antibody. NEEV specificities were confirmed by ow cytometry, western blot, particle size analyzer, and transmission electron microscopy. NEEV small RNAs were purified and sequenced. Results showed that: (1) MDD exhibited lower NEEV miR-93 expression than HC; (2) within MDD but not HC, those individuals with the lowest NEEV miR-93 expression had the highest serum concentrations of interleukin (IL)-1 receptor antagonist, IL-6, tumor necrosis factor, and leptin; and (3) within HC but not MDD, those participants with the highest miR-93 expression showed the strongest bilateral dorsal mid-insula activation. Since miR-93 is regulated by stress and affects epigenetic modulation by chromatin reorganization, these results suggest that healthy individuals but not MDD participants show an adaptive epigenetic regulation of insular function during interoceptive processing. Future investigations will need to delineate how specific internal and external environmental conditions contribute to miR-93 expression in MDD and what molecular mechanisms alter brain responsivity to body-relevant signals.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Chronic low-grade inflammation may play a role in the pathophysiology of depression, at least in a subset of patients. High-sensitivity C-reactive protein (hs-CRP) has been used to define an inflamed subgroup of depression with specific clinical characteristics and symptoms. In this study we investigated biochemical and clinical characteristics in patients with difficult-to-treat depression with and without chronic low-grade inflammation. METHOD We assayed plasma levels of interferon-gamma, tumor necrosis factor-alpha, Interleukin (IL)-10, IL-6, IL-8, and vitamin D in a clinically well-characterized sample of patients with difficult-to-treat depression (n = 263) and healthy controls (n = 46). Serum hs-CRP levels were available in the patient group and were used to define "inflamed depression" (hs-CRP > 3 mg/L). Based on previous studies correlating specific depressive symptoms to inflammatory markers, we calculated a composite score of inflammatory depressive symptoms (Infl-Dep score). A principal component analysis (PCA) was performed to identify patterns of variance in cytokines and vitamin D among patients. RESULTS Mean levels of IL-6 and IL-8 were significantly higher in depressed patients compared to controls, also after adjusting for sex, smoking, BMI, and age. None of the other inflammatory markers differed significantly between depressed patients and controls. Two components were extracted using PCA; one showed general cytokine elevations and one represented a pattern where IL-6 and IL-8 were inversely related to vitamin D (IL6-IL8-VitD component). The inflamed subgroup (hs-CRP > 3, n = 51) exhibited significantly higher BMI, higher Infl-Dep scores and higher IL6-IL8-VitD component scores than uninflamed patients (hs-CRP ≤ 3, n = 212). There were no significant differences in overall depression severity or suicidality between the inflamed and uninflamed groups. CONCLUSION Our results support the hypothesis of an inflamed subgroup of depression as a meaningful construct. This subgroup may have certain biological and clinical characteristics and more studies are needed to determine potential clinical implications.

Abstract
Patients with cancer are at greater risk of developing depression in comparison to the general population and this is associated with serious adverse effects, such as poorer quality of life, worse prognosis and higher mortality. Although the relationship between depression and cancer is now well established, a common underlying pathophysiological mechanism between the two conditions is yet to be elucidated. Existing theories of depression, based on monoamine neurotransmitter system dysfunction, are insufficient as explanations of the disorder. Recent advances have implicated neuroinflammatory mechanisms in the etiology of depression and it has been demonstrated that inflammation at a peripheral level may be mirrored centrally in astrocytes and microglia serving to promote chronic levels of inflammation in the brain. Three major routes to depression in cancer in which proinflammatory mediators are implicated, seem likely. Activation of the kynurenine pathway involving cytokines, increases tryptophan catabolism, resulting in diminished levels of serotonin which is widely acknowledged as being the hallmark of depression. It also results in neurotoxic effects on brain regions thought to be involved in the evolution of major depression. Proinflammatory mediators also play a crucial role in impairing regulatory glucocorticoid mediated feedback of the hypothalamic-pituitary-adrenal axis, which is activated by stress and considered to be involved in both depression and cancer. The third route is via the glutamatergic pathway, whereby glutamate excitotoxicity may lead to depression associated with cancer. A better understanding of the mechanisms underlying these dysregulated and other newly emerging pathways may provide a rationale for therapeutic targeting, serving to improve the care of cancer patients.

Abstract
Background Historically, many anti-obesity medications (AOMs) were withdrawn from development and/or the market due to safety concerns. Another challenge was that, with some exceptions, most of these AOMs had limited weight reducing efficacy. Approved AOMs often did not meet the weight reduction expectations of either clinicians, or their patients. Currently, newer approved and investigational AOMs achieve greater weight reduction than older AOMs. This has prompted an emerging new challenge of "too much weight loss" with some of these highly effective anti-obesity medications (heAOM) - something many did not think possible prior to year 2020. Methods This roundtable review includes perspectives from 3 obesity specialists with experience in the clinical use of AOMs. The intent is to provide perspectives and guidance in managing patients with obesity who experience "too much weight loss" with heAOM. Results The panelists generally agreed that before treatment with heAOMs, patients with obesity are best informed about the importance of healthful nutrition, adequate hydration, routine physical activity, behavior modification techniques, goals of treatment, and anticipated changes not only from a medical standpoint, but also from a psychosocial standpoint. Clinicians might best recognize that the definition of "excessive weight reduction" may have both objective and subjective considerations, with body composition analyses often essential to accurately assess adiposity. Conclusions The consensus of the panelists is reflected in a proposed structured and algorithmic approach to the patient with excessive weight reduction. Once properly evaluated, if the excessive weight reduction is determined most likely due to the heAOM hyper-responders, then this should prompt the clinician to educate the patient (and possibly family and friends) on the health and psychosocial aspects of weight reduction, and engage in a shared decision-making process that determines if the heAOM is best kept at the same dose, decreased in dose, temporarily held, or rare cases, best discontinued.

Abstract
BACKGROUND There is limited evidence for the association among soft drink consumption, aggressive behaviors, and depressive symptoms among the adolescents. METHODS Data were derived from a national representative sample of Youth Risk Behavior Surveys of United States during 2011 to 2019. Binary logistic regression models with complex sampling design were used to estimate the effect of soft drink consumption on aggressive behaviors and depressive symptoms. Mediating analysis was used to explore the association between soft drink consumption and depressive symptoms by aggressive behaviors. FINDINGS The total prevalence of depressive symptoms was 3l.2 % (30.3 %-32.0 %). Compared with none of soft drink consumption, <1 time/day (OR: 1.29, 95%CI: 1.19-1.41), 1-2 times/day (OR: 1.49, 95%CI: 1.33-1.67), and ≥3 times/day (OR: 1.95, 95%CI: 1.70-2.24) were significantly associated with increased risk of aggressive behaviors. High levels of soft drink consumption (1-2 times/day, OR: 1.19, 95%CI: 1.07-1.32; ≥3 times/day, OR: 1.61, 95%CI: 1.42-1.81) and aggressive behaviors (OR: 1.98, 95%CI: 1.84-2.13) were found to be significantly associated with increased risk of depressive symptoms. A linear dose-response relationship of soft drink consumption with aggressive behaviors and depressive symptoms was found in this study (all p < 0.001). Aggressive behaviors partially mediated the association between soft drink consumption and depressive symptoms and each pathway was statistically significant. LIMITATIONS The causal relationship was not able to certain because of the cross-sectional design. CONCLUSIONS The mediating role of aggressive behaviors on the association of high levels of soft drink consumptions with depressive symptoms should be paid more attention among the adolescents.

Relationship between Depression with Physical Activity and Obesity in Older Diabetes Patients: Inflammation as a Mediator. Nutrients 2022; 14:nu14194200. Abstract
Obesity and physical activity (PA) may affect inflammation and are also related to depression. This study aimed to explore the association between depression, obesity, and PA in older diabetes patients mediated by inflammation. We conducted a cross-sectional study with 197 elderly diabetes patients (≥65 y/o). Participants were interviewed to gather demographic and lifestyle data. Assessment of depression was based on the Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders, Fourth Edition (DSM-IV) criteria. High-sensitivity C-reactive protein was used as a marker of inflammation. Participants with a body mass index (kg/m2) ≥ 27 were considered to be obese. Our data indicated that among all participants with (n = 57) and without (n = 140) depression, older diabetes patients with depression had a lower intake of energy and protein and a lower prevalence of smoking and alcohol consumption than those without depression (p < 0.05). We also found that inflammation may be a partial mediator in the relationship between obesity and depression, and a significant mediator between PA and depression. Additionally, a regression model of obesity and PA showed that PA was a significant predictor of inflammation. However, the association between obesity and inflammation was not significant. When obesity, PA, and inflammation were included in a regression model together, inflammation significantly predicted depression (OR = 4.18, p = 0.004). The association between obesity and depression was also significant (OR = 2.45, p = 0.038). However, the association between PA and depression was not significant, and the mediating effect of inflammation was significant according to the Sobel test (z = −2.01, p = 0.045). In conclusion, the beneficial effects of PA may lower levels of inflammation produced by obesity, thus reducing inflammatory effects that may be related to depression. Overall, inflammation may mediate the relationship between depression and PA in older diabetes patients.

Abstract
Obesity and eating disorders are conditions that involve eating behaviors and are sometimes comorbid. Current evidence supports alterations in immunoinflammatory processes in both obesity and eating disorders. A plausible hypothesis is that immunoinflammatory processes may be involved in the pathophysiology of obesity and eating disorders. The aim of this review is to highlight the link between obesity and eating disorders, with a particular focus on immunoinflammatory processes. First, the relation between obesity and eating disorders will be presented, followed by a brief review of the literature on their association with immunoinflammatory processes. Second, developmental factors will be discussed to clarify the link between obesity, eating disorders, and immunoinflammatory processes. Genetic and epigenetic risk factors as well as the potential roles of stress pathways and early life development will be presented. Finally, implications of these findings for future research are discussed. This review highlighted biological and developmental aspects that overlap between obesity and EDs, emphasizing the need for biopsychosocial research approaches to advance current knowledge and practice in these fields.

The Association of Soft Drink Consumption and the 24-Hour Movement Guidelines with Suicidality among Adolescents of the United States. Nutrients 2022; 14:nu14091870. Abstract
Background: Evidence is lacking for the association of the behaviors of the 24 h movement guidelines including sleep duration, physical activity, screen time, and soft drink consumption with suicidality among adolescents. Methods: Data were extracted from a national representative sample of Youth Risk Behavior Surveys (YRBS) in the United States from 2011 to 2019. Binary logistic regression models with complex sampling designs were used to explore the association of the recommendations of the 24 h movement guidelines and soft drink consumption with suicidality. Results: The total prevalence of suicidal ideation, suicide plan, suicide attempt, and suicide attempt with medical treatment was higher among adolescents who did not meet all the recommendations in the 24 h movement guidelines and had a higher level of soft drink consumption. Totally, not meeting all the recommendations of the 24 h movement guidelines was significantly associated with an increased risk of suicidal ideation (OR: 1.69, 95% CI: 1.30–2.19) and suicide plan (OR: 1.76, 95% CI: 1.34–2.33) compared with adolescents who meet all the recommendations. Soft drink consumption of ≥3 times/day was associated with an increased risk of suicidality including suicidal ideation, suicide plan, suicide attempt, and suicide attempt with medical treatment, regardless of sex. Soft drink consumption of ≥3 times/day was significantly associated with an increased risk of suicide attempt and suicide attempt with medical treatment, regardless of whether the recommendations of physical activity, screen time, and sleep duration were met. Conclusion: Age-appropriate sleep duration, no more than 2 h of screen time per day, at least 1 h of physical activity per day as contained in the 24 h movement guidelines and less than one soft drink consumption per day are good targets to prevent involvement in suicidality. More actions for intervening in the movement and dietary behaviors among adolescents are needed to maintain physical and mental health.

Abstract
Depressive disorder is one of the most common psychiatric syndromes that, if left untreated, can cause many disturbances in a person's life. Numerous factors are involved in depression, including inflammation, brain-derived neurotrophic factor (BDNF), GABAergic system, hypothalamic- pituitary-adrenal (HPA) Axis, monoamine neurotransmitters (serotonin (5-HT), noradrenaline, and dopamine). Common treatments for depression are selective serotonin reuptake inhibitors, tricyclic antidepressants, and monoamine oxidase inhibitors, but these drugs have several side effects such as anxiety, diarrhea, constipation, weight loss, and sexual dysfunctions. These agents only reduce the symptoms and temporarily reduce the rate of cognitive impairment associated with depression. As a result, extensive research has recently been conducted on the potential use of antidepressant and sedative herbs. According to the available data, herbs used in traditional medicine can be significantly effective in reducing depression, depressive symptoms and improving patients' performance. The present study provides a summary of biomarkers and therapeutic goals of depression and shows that natural products such as saffron or genipin have antidepressant effects. Some of the useful natural products and their mechanisms were evaluated. Data on various herbs and natural isolated compounds reported to prevent and reduce depressive symptoms is also discussed.

Abstract
OBJECTIVE To examine the combined association of central obesity and depressive symptoms with risk of heart disease in a national prospective cohort study of the Chinese population. METHODS Data came from 10,722 community-dwelling adults aged over 45 years, from the China Health and Retirement Longitudinal Study during 2011-2018. Central obesity was assessed with waist circumference (WC) in physical examinations (men with a WC of ≥ 90 cm and women with a WC of ≥ 80 cm). Depressive symptoms were assessed using the 10-item Center for Epidemiologic Studies Depression Scale (score ≥ 10). Participants were assigned to four groups according to central obesity (yes/no) and depressive symptoms (yes/no). Cox proportional hazard regression was used after adjusting for covariates. RESULTS During 7 years of follow-up, we identified 1080 heart disease cases. Compared with people without central obesity and depressive symptoms, the multivariable-adjusted hazard ratios (95% confidence intervals) were 1.39 (1.18, 1.64) for those who had central obesity alone, 1.44 (1.18, 1.77) for those who had depressive symptoms alone, and 1.88 (1.55, 2.30) for those who had both central obesity and depressive symptoms. The combined association in men was more evident than that in women. CONCLUSIONS Our study provided evidence that the coexistence of central obesity and depressive symptoms were associated with a substantially increased risk of heart disease compared to those without these two conditions.

Abstract
Polycystic ovary syndrome (PCOS) is one of the most prevalent gynecological endocrine conditions affecting reproductive women. It can feature a variety of symptoms, such as obesity, insulin resistance, skin conditions, and infertility. Women with PCOS are susceptible to illnesses including mood disorders, diabetes, hypertension, and dyslipidemia. Among them, depression is the most common in PCOS and has a detrimental effect on quality of life. Depression may occasionally develop due to the pathological traits of PCOS, but its exact pathogenesis in PCOS have eluded researchers to date. Therefore, there is an urgent need to explore the pathogenesis and treatments of depression in PCOS. The present review discusses the epidemiology of depression in PCOS, potential pathogenic mechanisms underlying PCOS and depression, as well as some potential factors causing depression in PCOS, including obesity, insulin resistance, hyperandrogenism, inflammation, and infertility. Meanwhile, some common treatment strategies for depression in PCOS, such as lifestyle intervention, acupuncture, oral contraceptive pills, psychological intervention, and insulin-sensitizer, are also reviewed. To fully understand the pathogenesis and treatment of depression in PCOS, a need remains for future large-scale multi-center randomized controlled trials and in-depth mechanism studies.

Abstract
Increasing evidence supports the notion that neuroinflammation plays a critical role in the etiology of major depressive disorder (MDD), at least in a subset of patients. By virtue of their capacity to transform into reactive states in response to inflammatory insults, microglia, the brain's resident immune cells, play a pivotal role in the induction of neuroinflammation. Experimental studies have demonstrated the ability of microglia to recognize pathogens or damaged cells, leading to the activation of a cytotoxic response that exacerbates damage to brain cells. However, microglia display a wide range of responses to injury and may also promote resolution stages of inflammation and tissue regeneration. MDD has been associated with chronic priming of microglia. Recent studies suggest that altered microglial morphology and function, caused either by intense inflammatory activation or by senescence, may contribute to depression and associated impairments in neuroplasticity. In this context, modifying microglia phenotype by tuning inflammatory pathways might have important translational relevance to harness neuroinflammation in MDD. Interestingly, it was recently shown that different microglial phenotypes are associated with distinct metabolic pathways and analysis of the underlying molecular mechanisms points to an instrumental role for energy metabolism in shaping microglial functions. Here, we review various canonical pro-inflammatory, anti-inflammatory and metabolic pathways in microglia that may provide new therapeutic opportunities to control neuroinflammation in brain disorders, with a strong focus on MDD.

Abstract
A potential correlation between polycystic ovary syndrome (PCOS) and asthma, used to be identified as diseases originating from two independent systems, has been supported by increasing evidence. From an epidemiological perspective, mounting studies have confirmed that women suffering from PCOS exhibit increased susceptibility to asthma. Meanwhile, PCOS and asthma seem to share several mutual pathological conditions, such as metabolic disorders, hormonal fluctuation, proinflammatory state, etc. Here, we further elucidate the correlation between asthma and PCOS by focusing on the internal common pathophysiology and adverse influences on women's health. Understanding the internal connection between PCOS and asthma may shed light on developing new prevention and control strategies to fight against these conditions.

Abstract
Depression has been addressed as a predictor of worse outcomes in kidney transplant recipients (KTRs). Nutritional status plays a great role in treatment of this population. The Mediterranean diet (MeDi) has been associated with lower levels of depressive symptoms. The aim of this cross-sectional study was to determine the rate of depression and its correlations to nutritional status and dietary habits according to the MeDi in Dalmatian KTRs. We included 115 KTRs, and data about body composition and anthropometric, laboratory and clinical parameters were obtained for each study participant. The Beck Depression Inventory-II (BDI-II) questionnaire was used to assess depressive symptoms and the Mediterranean Diet Serving Score (MDSS) was used to assess adherence to the MeDi. We found the presence of depressive symptoms in 21.73% of the Dalmatian KTRs. BDI-II score was reciprocally associated with fat mass, trunk visceral fat, anthropometric parameters of obesity, triglyceride levels and olive oil consumption. Inverse associations were found between BDI-II score and skeletal muscle mass, handgrip strength, MCV, hemoglobin levels and consumption of fish and white meat, as suggested by the MeDi. Our results showed the interconnections between nutritional status, dietary habits and depression in Dalmatian KTRs.

Abstract
The role of inflammation in the pathogenesis of depression is becoming increasingly apparent, but its role in perinatal depression is less well-studied. Pregnancy and the postpartum are characterised by distinct and changing inflammatory profiles throughout, which makes the study of depression-related alterations in this period complex. This review presents literature discussing a role for the immune system in both antenatal and postnatal depression. Furthermore, literature investigating the role of the maternal immune system on breast milk composition and offspring immunological and behavioural outcomes is discussed, before concluding with suggestions for future work as this developing field grows.

Abstract
OBJECTIVE Obesity is characterized by a state of chronic, low-intensity systemic inflammation frequently associated with insulin resistance and dyslipidemia. METHODS Given that chronic inflammation has been implicated in the pathogenesis of mood disorders, we investigated if chronic obesity that was initiated early in life - lasting through adulthood - could be more harmful to memory impairment and mood fluctuations such as depression. RESULTS Here we show that pre-pubertal male rats (30 days old) treated with a high-fat diet (40%) for 8-months gained ~50% more weight when compared to controls, exhibited depression and anxiety-like behaviors but no memory impairment. The prefrontal cortex of the obese rats exhibited an increase in the expression of genes related to inflammatory response, such as NFKb, MMP9, CCl2, PPARb, and PPARg. There were no alterations in genes known to be related to depression. CONCLUSION Long-lasting obesity with onset in prepuberal age led to depression and neuroinflammation but not to memory impairment.

Abstract
PCOS or polycystic ovary syndrome is a common endocrine disorder that occurs during the reproductive age in females. It manifests in the form of a wide range of symptoms including (but not limited to) hirsutism, amenorrhea, oligomenorrhea, obesity, acne vulgaris, infertility, alopecia, and insulin resistance. The incidence of depression in PCOS population is increasing as compared to the general population. Increased depression in PCOS significantly alters the quality of life (QOL) of affected females. Also, self-esteem is found to be low in both depression and PCOS. The loss in self-esteem in such patients can be largely attributed to the associated factors including (but not limited to) obesity, acne, androgenic alopecia, and hirsutism. The reason behind the occurrence of depression in PCOS remains elusive to date. Literature suggests that there is an overlap of clinical symptoms between depression and PCOS. As the symptoms overlap, there is a possibility of common associations between depression, PCOS, and PCOS-associated abnormalities including insulin resistance (IR), obesity, CVD, and androgen excess. Studies demonstrate that depression is an inflammatory disorder marked with increased levels of inflammatory markers. On the other hand, PCOS is also regarded as a pro-inflammatory state that is characterized by increased levels of pro-inflammatory markers. Thus, there is a possibility of an inflammatory relationship existing between depression and PCOS. It is also possible that the inflammatory markers in PCOS can cross the blood-brain barrier (BBB) leading to the development of depression. Through the present review, we have attempted to shed light on common associations/shared links between depression and PCOS with respect to the levels of cortisol, androgen, vitamin D, neurotransmitters, monoaminoxidase (MAO), and insulin-like growth factor-1 (IGF-1). Tracking down common associations between depression and PCOS will help find potential drug therapies and improve the QOL of females with depression in PCOS.

Abstract
AIM This study aimed to investigate the effects of 6-weeks of moderate intensity aerobic exercise on markers of inflammation and symptom severity in those undergoing management of a mental health disorder. METHOD Twenty six participants were allocated into two groups, those reporting as apparently healthy (AH, n = 13) or those undergoing the management of a mental health disorder (MI, n = 13). Following a baseline testing and familiarization session, participants commenced the 6-week aerobic training intervention, involving stationary cycling at 65% heart rate reserve for 35 min progressing to 70% for 40 min. Measures of aerobic fitness (VO2peak), anthropometric variables, symptom questionnaires and venous blood were collect pre- and post-intervention. Venous blood was assessed for nod-like receptor pyrin containing-3, interleukin (IL)-6, tumor necrosis factor-alpha (TNF-α), IL-1β, C-reactive protein (CRP) and brain-derived neurotropic factor (BDNF). RESULTS There were no baseline differences between groups, however following the intervention the AH demonstrated lower TNF-α (p = 0.049) than the MI group. Within change was observed for the MI group with an increase in VO2peak (p = 0.049) and declines in symptom severity (p = 0.00-0.005). Significant correlations between variables indicated a positive association between body fat, body fat percentage, CRP and symptom severity (p = 0.01-0.04). Conversely, symptom severity and CRP were inversely associated with VO2peak values (p = 0.02-0.04). CONCLUSION Six-weeks of moderate intensity aerobic exercise increases VO2peak and reduces symptom severity in those currently undergoing management of a mental health disorder. Further, there may be a physiological link between aerobic capacity, symptom severity, inflammation and adiposity, however greater exploration is required.

Abstract
Knee osteoarthritis (OA) is the most common joint disorder in the U.S. and a leading cause of disability. Depression and obesity are highly comorbid among knee OA patients, and the combination of obesity and depression is associated with decreased physical activity, higher pain and disability, and more rapid cartilage degradation. Depression, obesity and OA exacerbate one another and share a common pathophysiology involving systemic inflammation and pro-inflammatory cytokines, reflecting a complex mind-body interaction. Current treatments for knee OA offer little to no benefit over placebo, and do not emphasize mind-body practices or physical activity to target the underlying pathophysiology. Mind-body interventions to lessen depressive symptoms and increase physical activity offer the ability to target biological, mechanical and psychological mechanisms of OA progression. Our long-term goals are to evaluate the mechanisms by which the Relaxation Response Resiliency Program (3RP) delivered via secure telehealth, and adapted for patients with depression, obesity and knee OA (GetActive-OA) promotes increases in physical activity and improved knee health. We hypothesize that the synergistic interaction between mindfulness, adaptive thinking, positive psychology and healthy living skills of the GetActive-OA will slow the progression of symptomatic knee OA by reducing pro-inflammatory cytokine expression and promoting optimal mechanical loading of the cartilage. Here we present the protocol for a mixed methods study that will adapt the 3RP for the needs of knee OA patients with depression and obesity with a focus on increasing physical activity (GetActive-OA), and iteratively maximize the feasibility, credibility and acceptability of the programs and research procedures.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Increased circulating pro-inflammatory markers have repeatedly been associated with major depressive disorder (MDD). However, it remains unclear whether inflammation represents a causal mechanism for MDD, or whether the association is influenced by confounding factors such as body mass index (BMI). METHODS To better understand this complex relationship, we generated polygenic risk scores (PRS) for MDD and BMI in a population cohort and attempted to isolate the impact these potential risk factors have on adulthood inflammation. Peripheral blood samples were collected as part of the South East London Community Health study, where we generated individualized PRS for MDD and BMI and quantified inflammatory markers using multiplex ELISA-based technology. We performed linear regressions to investigate the effects of PRS for MDD and BMI on inflammatory marker levels. RESULTS Out of 35 inflammatory markers, we found a nominal effect of PRS for MDD on interleukin-10. We also found a significant positive effect of BMI on nine inflammatory markers, of which the two most strongly affected markers, interleukin-6 (IL-6) and C-reactive protein (CRP), were also nominally predicted by BMI PRS. LIMITATIONS The study utilized a cross-sectional design with a moderately sized sample. CONCLUSIONS Our findings suggest there may not be a shared genetic mechanism contributing to MDD and higher inflammatory marker levels. However, there may be shared genetic etiology between BMI and adulthood levels of CRP and IL-6. Therefore, polygenic risk scores for BMI may represent a useful indicator for heightened levels of inflammation in adulthood.

Abstract
While several pieces of evidence link obesity and mood disorders in menopause, the mechanisms involved are not yet fully understood. We have previously demonstrated that Ginkgo biloba extract (GbE) both attenuated diet-induced obesity of male rats and restored serotonin-induced hypophagia in ovariectomized female rats. The present study aimed at exploring whether GbE treatment ameliorates ovariectomy-related obesity and anxious/depressive-like behaviours. Wistar female rats were either ovariectomized (OVX) or sham-operated (Sham). After 2 months, either 500 mg/kg of GbE or vehicle were administered daily by gavage for 14 days. Anxious/depressive-like behaviours were assessed by the Elevated Plus Maze and the Forced Swim Tests, respectively. Ovariectomy caused high visceral adiposity, hyperleptinemia, and hypercholesterolemia, and increased the anxiety index (p = 0.048 vs. Sham + GbE) while it decreased the latency to immobility (p = 0.004 vs. Sham). GbE treatment in OVX rats improved body composition, adiponectin levels and blood lipid profile. It also reduced the anxiety index (p = 0.004) and increased the latency to immobility (p = 0.003) of OVX rats. Linear regression analysis demonstrated that leptin (p = 0.047) and total cholesterol levels (p = 0.022) were associated with anxious-like behaviours while body adiposity (p = 0.00005) was strongly associated with depressive-like behaviours. The results showed that GbE therapy was effective in attenuating the deleterious effects of ovariectomy on body composition, lipid profile, and anxious/depressive-like behaviours. Further studies are warranted to better understand the therapeutic potential of GbE in menopause.

Abstract
(1) Background: Activated immune-inflammatory pathways play an important role in the pathogenesis of depression and pathological obesity. Obesity might promote production of cytokine interleukin 17, which plays a significant role in neuro-immune reactions. The study aimed at assessing the relationship between Body Mass Index (BMI) and IL-17 expression, taking into account the clinical psychiatric variables in patients with depression. (2) Methods: A total of 125 participants took part in the study (95 depressed patients, 30 healthy controls). Data concerning the course of depressive disorders and BMI were collected. The severity of depressive symptoms was assessed using the Hamilton Depression Rating Scale (HDRS). Reverse transcription polymerase chain reaction (RT-PCR) was used to assess IL-17 gene expression at the mRNA levels, while enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay (ELISA) was used to assess IL-17 expression at the protein level. (3) Results: Patients with more hospitalizations showed significantly higher IL-17 mRNA expression levels and higher BMI. However, no correlation between BMI and IL-17 expression was found in depressed patients. (4) Conclusions: Our study revealed that BMI does not affect IL-17 expression in patients with depression. However, further studies should be conducted to evaluate the effects of IL-17 inhibition on adipose tissue and vice versa.

Abstract
Abstract. Background: This study aimed to examine the association between depression and dietary patterns via the intermediary role of erythrocytes polyunsaturated fatty acids (PUFA). Methods: In this individually matched case-control study, the dietary patterns were extracted for 330 individuals using factor analysis. Furthermore, erythrocyte PUFAs including n-3 and n-6 were assessed using a GC–Mass spectrometry analytical method for 84 people. Depression was diagnosed using the criteria mentioned in the Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders. The dietary patterns were also extracted using a valid and reliable semi-quantitative food frequency questionnaire. Results: The findings showed that healthy dietary patterns were related to the risk of depression (P = 0.01, odds ratio (OR) = 0.31, 95% confidence interval (CI): 0.14-0.68) by the increase of ratio n-3 /n-6 PUFA (p ≤ 0.03) and decrease of ratio n-6 /n-3 PUFA (p ≤ 0.005). Moreover, the unhealthy dietary patterns were associated with the risk of depression (P = 0.02, OR = 2.7, 95%CI: 1.25-5.9) by the decrease of ratio n-3/n-6 PUFA (p ≤ 0.03) and increase of ratio n-6/n-3 PUFA (p ≤ 0.001). Conclusion: Based on the results, the type of dietary pattern is related to the risk of depression considering the changes in n-3 and n-6 PUFA as well as the ratio of n-3 to n-6 as the mediator variables. Of course, further studies are required in this area.

Abstract
BACKGROUND A subset of patients with Major Depressive Disorder (MDD) have shown differences relative to healthy controls in blood inflammatory and immune markers. Meanwhile, MDD and comorbid obesity appear to present with distinct biological and symptom characteristics, categorised as "atypical" or "immunometabolic" depression, although the relevant underlying biological mechanisms are still uncertain. Therefore, this exploratory study aimed to better characterise the relationship between peripheral blood immune markers and symptoms of MDD, as well as the extent to which body mass index (BMI) may alter this relationship. METHODS Linear regression analyses were performed between selected baseline characteristics including clinical scales and blood inflammatory markers in participants with MDD (n = 119) enrolled in the PREDDICT randomised controlled trial (RCT), using age, sex and BMI as covariates, and then stratified by BMI status. Specifically, the Montgomery-Åsberg Depression Rating Scale (MADRS) for symptom severity, Clinical Global Impression scale (CGI) for functional impairment, Oxford Depression Questionnaire (ODQ) for emotional blunting, and THINC integrated tool (THINC-it) for cognitive function were considered as clinical measures. RESULTS There was a significant association between basophil count and THINC-it Codebreaker mean response time (associated with complex attention, perceptual motor, executive function, and learning and memory abilities) in overweight individuals and with THINC-it Trails total response time (associated with executive function ability) in moderately obese individuals, when controlling for age, sex, and years of education. No correlation was found between any tested blood markers and MADRS, CGI or ODQ clinical measures, regardless of BMI. DISCUSSION Although the present study is exploratory, the results suggest that targeting of the immune system and of metabolic parameters might confer benefits, specifically in patients with high BMI and experiencing cognitive impairment associated with MDD. Abstract
BACKGROUND Maternal weight variables are important predictors of postpartum depression (PPD). While preliminary evidence points to an association between pre-pregnancy obesity and PPD, the role of excessive gestational weight gain (GWG) on PPD is less studied. In this secondary cohort analysis of the German 'healthy living in pregnancy' (GeliS) trial, we aimed to investigate associations between weight-related variables and PPD and to assess the influence of GWG on the risk for PPD. METHODS We included women with normal weight, overweight, and obesity (BMI 18.5-40.0 kg/m2). Symptoms of PPD were assessed 6-8 weeks postpartum using the Edinburgh Postnatal Depression Scale. Pre-pregnancy BMI was self-reported. During the course of pregnancy, weight was measured at gynaecological practices within regular check-ups. GWG was defined as the difference between the last measured weight before delivery and the first measured weight at the time of recruitment (≤ 12th week of gestation). Excessive GWG was classified according to the Institute of Medicine. Multiple logistic regression analyses were used to estimate the odds of PPD in relation to pre-pregnancy BMI, GWG, and excessive GWG adjusting for important confounders. RESULTS Of the total 1583 participants, 45.6% (n = 722) showed excessive GWG and 7.9% (n = 138) experienced PPD. Pre-pregnancy BMI (per 5-unit increase; OR = 1.23, 95% CI 1.08-1.41, p = 0.002) and pre-pregnancy overweight or obesity were significantly positively associated with the odds of developing PPD, particularly among women with an antenatal history of anxiety or depressive symptoms (overweight: OR = 1.93, 95% CI = 1.15-3.22, p = 0.01; obesity: OR = 2.11, 95% CI = 1.13-3.96, p = 0.02). Sociodemographic or lifestyle factors did not additively influence the odds of having PPD. In fully adjusted models, there was no significant evidence that GWG or the occurrence of excessive GWG increased the odds of experiencing PPD (excessive vs. non-excessive: OR = 3.48, 95% CI 0.35-34.94; GWG per 1 kg increase: OR = 1.16, 95% CI 0.94-1.44). CONCLUSION Pre-pregnancy overweight or obesity is associated with PPD independent of concurrent risk factors. History of anxiety or depressive symptoms suggests a stress-induced link between pre-pregnancy weight and PPD. Abstract
Objective This study aims to investigate the possible relationship between plasma concentrations of apelin, visfatin and resistin levels of first episode psychosis patients and chronic schizophrenia patients. Methods A total number of 29 untreated patients with first episode psychosis, 30 chronic schizophrenia and 29 randomly selected weight- and body mass index-matched healthy volunteers were included. The Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders 4th edition, Positive and Negative Syndrome Scale (PANSS) and Clinical Global Impression Scale were applied to the patient groups. The enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay method was used to measure plasma apelin, visfatin and resistin levels. Results There was no difference in age, marital status, occupation, and BMI between the groups. Plasma apelin levels were significantly higher in first episode psychosis group than chronic schizophrenia and control group. There was no statistically significant difference in plasma visfatin levels between the groups: first episode psychosis group, chronic schizophrenia and control group. Plasma resistin levels were higher in both first episode psychosis group and chronic schizophrenia group than the control group. There was no statistically significant correlation between plasma apelin and resistin levels and total PANSS scores in the group of patients. Conclusion To our knowledge, this study is the first which investigates the plasma apelin, visfatin and resistin levels in patients with first episode psychosis and chronic schizophrenia. Based on the results of this study, apelin and resistin may be related with some central nervous system pathologies, including the severity of a psychiatric disorder.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Inflammation may be a hidden process in the relationship between dietary intake and depression, but no study has evaluated the role of diet and inflammation jointly in explaining depression risk in early life. The current study aims to investigate the relationship between inflammatory dietary pattern (IDP) in childhood and depression in early adulthood. METHODS This study used data prospectively collected over 10 years from the Avon Longitudinal Study of Parents and Children (ALSPAC) cohort (n = 6939) free from depression at baseline (age 8.5 years). An IDP score was empirically derived via reduced rank regression and stepwise linear regression based on dietary intake data from the food frequency questionnaire at 8.5 years and levels of inflammatory biomarkers, C-reactive protein and interleukin-6, at 9.5 years. At age 18 years, depression cases were identified via the International Statistical Classification of Diseases, 10th Revision (ICD-10) diagnosis and the Clinical Interview Schedule-Revised (CIS-R) depression score. Logistic regression models were constructed to examine the relationship between the IDP score and risk of depression adjusted for potential confounders. Analyses stratified by weight status were also conducted. Multiple imputations were utilized to minimize bias due to loss-to-follow-up. RESULTS Participants in the highest tertile of IDP score had 1.34 times odds to develop depression compared to those in the lowest tertile (95% CI, 1.08-1.66; P-trend<0.01), after dietary misreporting status and energy intake were adjusted. After all covariates were adjusted, the relationship between IDP tertiles and depression was attenuated (highest tertile vs. lowest tertile: OR = 1.21; 95% CI, 0.96-1.51); in addition, the relationship was marginally significant among participants who were not overweight or obese (p < 0.10) but not significant among participants who were overweight or obese. CONCLUSIONS Higher IDP in childhood seems to be associated with higher depression risk in early adulthood. The study provides preliminary evidence that chronic inflammation may underlie the relationship between diet and depression even for children, especially those who are not overweight or obese.

Abstract
Objective This study sought to assess whether changes in depressive symptoms, general health, and area-level socio-economic status (SES) were associated to changes over time in waist circumference and body mass index (BMI). Methods A total of 2871 adults (18 years or older), living in Adelaide (South Australia), were observed across three waves of data collection spanning ten years, with clinical measures of waist circumference, height and weight. Participants completed the Centre for Epidemiologic Studies Depression (CES-D) and Short Form 36 health questionnaires (SF-36 general health domain). An area-level SES measure, relative location factor, was derived from hedonic regression models using residential property features but blind to location. Growth curve models with latent variables were fitted to data. Results Waist circumference, BMI and depressive symptoms increased over time. General health and relative location factor decreased. Worsening general health and depressive symptoms predicted worsening waist circumference and BMI trajectories in covariate-adjusted models. Diminishing relative location factor was negatively associated with waist circumference and BMI trajectories in unadjusted models only. Conclusions Worsening depressive symptoms and general health predict increasing adiposity and suggest the development of unhealthful adiposity might be prevented by attention to negative changes in mental health and overall general health.

Abstract
Appetite change is a defining feature of major depressive disorder (MDD), yet little neuroscientific evidence exists to explain why some individuals experience increased appetite when they become depressed while others experience decreased appetite. Previous research suggests depression-related appetite changes can be indicative of underlying neural and inflammatory differences among MDD subtypes. The present study explores the relationship between systemic inflammation and brain circuitry supporting food hedonics for individuals with MDD. Sixty-four participants (31 current, unmedicated MDD and 33 healthy controls [HC]) provided blood samples for analysis of an inflammatory marker, C-reactive protein (CRP), and completed a functional magnetic resonance imaging (fMRI) scan in which they rated the perceived pleasantness of various food stimuli. Random-effects multivariate modeling was used to explore group differences in the relationship between CRP and the coupling between brain activity and inferred food pleasantness (i.e., strength of the relationship between activity and pleasantness ratings). Results revealed that for MDD with increased appetite, higher CRP in blood related to greater coupling between orbitofrontal cortex and anterior insula activity and inferred food pleasantness. Compared to HC, all MDD exhibited a stronger positive association between CRP and coupling between activity in striatum and inferred food pleasantness. These findings suggest that for individuals with MDD, systemic low-grade inflammation is associated with differences in reward and interoceptive-related neural circuitry when making hedonic inferences about food stimuli. In sum, altered immunologic states may affect appetite and inferences about food reward in individuals with MDD and provide evidence for physiological subtypes of MDD.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Neurobehavioral symptoms and cognitive dysfunction related to mood disorders are present in individuals with severe obesity. We sought to determine acute improvements in these symptoms and relationships with adiposity, inflammation, and insulin sensitivity after roux-en-y gastric bypass (RYGB) surgery. METHODS The self-report Zung Depression Rating (ZDRS) and Neurotoxicity Rating (NRS) scales were administered before, and at 6-months after RYGB surgery in severely obese women (body mass index > 35 kg/m2; N = 19). Symptom domains corresponding to depressed mood/suicide ideation, anxiety, cognitive, somatic, and neurovegetative symptoms were assessed. Biologic measures were of adiposity [leptin, abdominal visceral (VAT) and subcutaneous (SAT) adipose tissue], inflammation [IL-6, C-reactive protein (CRP)], and insulin sensitivity (Si). Spearman correlations and linear regression (adjusted for biologic measures) assessed relationships between changes in biologic measures and changes in neurobehavioral domains. RESULTS By 6-months after RYGB, VAT, SAT, Si, CRP, and IL-6 had improved (p < .05). Anxiety, somatic, and neurovegetative symptoms domains improved (p < .05), but depressed mood/suicidal ideation and cognitive domains did not. Reductions in VAT were associated with decreases in neurovegetative symptoms (beta = 295 ± 85, p < .01). We also found significant positive longitudinal associations between IL-6 concentrations and minor changes in cognitive symptoms. CONCLUSION Anxiety, somatic and neurovegetative symptoms, improved within 6 months after RYGB, but depressed mood/suicidal ideation and cognitive symptoms did not improve. Abstract
BACKGROUND Numerous studies have suggested associations between depression and cardiometabolic (CM) diseases. However, little is known about the mechanism underlying this comorbidity, and whether the relationship differs by depression subtypes. METHODS Using polygenic risk scores (PRS) and linkage disequilibrium (LD) score regression, we investigated the genetic overlap of various depression-related phenotypes with a comprehensive panel of 20 CM traits. GWAS results for major depressive disorder (MDD) were taken from the PGC and CONVERGE studies, with the latter focusing on severe melancholic depression. GWAS results on general depressive symptoms (DS) and neuroticism were also included. We identified the shared genetic variants and inferred enriched pathways. We also looked for drugs over-represented among the top-shared genes, with an aim to finding repositioning opportunities for comorbidities. RESULTS We found significant genetic overlap between MDD, DS, and neuroticism with cardiometabolic traits. In general, positive polygenic associations with CM abnormalities were observed except for MDD-CONVERGE. Counterintuitively, PRS representing severe melancholic depression was associated with reduced CM risks. Enrichment analyses of shared SNPs revealed many interesting pathways such as those related to inflammation that underlie the comorbidity of depressive and CM traits. Using a gene-set analysis approach, we also revealed several repositioning candidates with literature support (e.g., bupropion). CONCLUSIONS Our study highlights shared genetic bases of depression with CM traits, and suggests the associations vary by depression subtypes, which may have implications in targeted prevention of cardiovascular events for patients. Identification of shared genetic factors may also guide drug discovery for the comorbidities.
