Abstract
Periodontitis is one of the major global public health problems associated with the occurrence and development of diverse systemic diseases, especially acquired immune deficiency syndrome (AIDS), necessitating further research and clinical attention. The persistence of HIV-1 latency poses a significant challenge to the attainment of a functional cure for AIDS, despite the introduction of highly active antiretroviral therapy (HAART). A similar mechanistic basis between periodontitis and HIV-1 latency has been revealed by many studies, suggesting possible mechanisms whereby periodontitis and HIV-1 latency may mutually influence each other. Therefore, we aimed to systematically summarize the current research on periodontitis and HIV-1 latency to investigate their potential correlations. This study revealed several common hubs for periodontitis and HIV-1 latency in the nuclear factor kappa-B (NF-κB) signaling pathway and other signaling pathways, including the Wnt/β-catenin pathway, bromodomain-containing protein 4 (BRD4), protein kinase C (PKC), the NOD-like receptor thermal protein domain associated protein 3 (NLRP3) inflammasome, programmed cell death protein 1 (PD-1), histone deacetylases (HDACs), and the phosphatidylinositol-3-kinase (PI3K)/protein kinase B (Akt)/mammalian target of rapamycin (mTOR) pathway. Furthermore, we will discuss the hypothesis that periodontal pathogens may represent the unifying mechanism elucidating the intricate interconnection between periodontitis and HIV-1 latency. This article presents a detailed and comprehensive overview of the relationship underlying periodontitis and HIV-1 latency in terms of molecular mechanisms, which may provide novel theoretical insight into the pathogenesis of periodontitis and HIV-1 latency and reveal suitable therapeutic targets for the two diseases.

Abstract
Periodontitis was reported to be associated with aspiration pneumonia. However, the relationship between periodontitis and aspiration pneumonia remains unclear. This study investigated the virulence factor of Porphyromonas gingivalis, which exacerbates aspiration pneumonia, and the role of IL-35, an inhibitory heterodimeric cytokine of EBI3 and p35, in aspiration pneumonia using Ebi3 knockout (KO) mice. Aspiration pneumonia was induced by the intratracheal injection of Streptococcus pneumoniae and P. gingivalis culture supernatant (mixed infection). We used leupeptin to inhibit gingipain, a virulence factor of P. gingivalis. Four days after infection, lung tissues were collected for analyses. The percentage of interstitium in the group with mixed infection and leupeptin treatment was significantly reduced compared with the non-leupeptin administration group. Additionally, the percentage of interstitium in the field of Ebi3 KO mice was significantly increased compared with wild-type (WT) mice in mixed infection. IL-35 production in WT mice with mixed infection was significantly increased compared with the Control group. IL-17 production in Ebi3 KO mice was significantly increased compared with WT mice with mixed infection. These findings suggest that gingipain exacerbates aspiration pneumonia and that IL-35 may contribute to suppressing the exacerbation of aspiration pneumonia.

Abstract
OBJECTIVES Antimicrobial agents have been used in conjunction with conventional chemomechanical therapy to improve the treatment outcomes of periodontitis. This study aimed to evaluate the ameliorating effect of topical application of hyaluronic acid (HA) with or without grapefruit seed extract (GFSE) (5, 10, and 15 wt. %) in induced periodontitis in rats. METHODS Surgical alveolar bone defects were created in 30 adult male Wistar rats, followed by the introduction of a ligature impregnated with Escherichia coli lipopolysaccharide for four weeks to induce periodontitis. Rats were distributed into five groups (n = 6); an untreated periodontitis group and four treated groups in which gel (HA +/- GFSE) was injected into the sulcus once weekly for two weeks. All rats were euthanized six weeks after starting the experiment, and the mandibles were prepared for histopathological and histomorphometric analyses. Enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay was used for measuring tissue levels of tumor necrosis factor-alpha (TNF-α), transforming growth factor-β1 (TGF-β1), and paraoxonase-1 (PON-1) enzyme. RESULTS HA enhanced new bone formation at defect margins, thereby diminishing defect width. This effect significantly increased as HA was combined with GFSE in a dose-dependent manner. Moreover, the HA and GFSE mixture suppressed the tissue levels of TNF-α and TGF-β1, thereby increasing PON-1. CONCLUSION The HA and GFSE mixtures exhibited synergistic therapeutic potential for the treatment of chronic periodontitis in a dose-dependent manner.

Abstract
Aim: This systematic review was aimed at addressing the focused question: What is the protective potential of biological agents against alveolar bone resorption during the progression of experimental periodontitis (EP)? Material and Methods: The study protocol was registered in the Open Science Framework database (doi:10.17605/OSF.IO/3P2HY). A comprehensive literature search was conducted across PubMed, Web of Science, Cochrane Library, Scopus, and Embase databases up to December 2023. Inclusion criteria consisted of preclinical studies in animal models of EP that examined the effects of biological agents on preventing periodontal bone loss and reducing tissue inflammation. Studies were excluded if they (i) used non-EP animal models; (ii) focused on antimicrobial agents; (iii) centered on prebiotics or probiotics; (iv) evaluated compounds not classified as biologicals; or (v) included randomized clinical trials, clinical studies, or reviews. Eligibility was determined based on the PI/ECOs framework, and study quality was assessed using the SYRCLE risk-of-bias tool. Results: After screening an initial pool of 5236 records from databases, registries, and hand searches, 39 studies met the inclusion criteria. A total of 23 biological agents were evaluated across these studies. The majority of studies employed the ligature-induced model of EP to test the effectiveness of biologicals as preventive or therapeutic interventions. The dosage of biological agents and the duration of disease induction varied depending on the EP model. In all studies, the main outcome-alveolar bone loss, a hallmark of EP-was significantly inhibited by biological agents, which also reduced proinflammatory mediators when compared to untreated controls. A key strength of this review is the high number of studies included, most of which were classified as having low risk of bias. However, a notable limitation is the absence of a meta-analysis, the short follow-up periods in the included studies, and the heterogeneity among the compound dosages and route of administration. Conclusion: This systematic review demonstrates that biological agents are effective in reducing bone loss and mitigating inflammation during EP progression. Randomized clinical trials are needed to confirm these findings in human populations.

Abstract
Succinate receptor GPR91 is one of the G protein-coupled receptors (GPCRs) that interacts with various proteins to regulate diverse cellular functions such as cell morphology, apoptosis, and differentiation. In this study, we investigated whether the GPR91-mediated signaling pathway regulates mineralization in Porphyromonas gingivalis (P. gingivalis)-treated osteoblasts and to determine its potential role in osteoclast differentiation. Primary mouse osteoblasts from wild-type (WT) and GPR91 knockout (GPR91-/-) mice infected with P. gingivalis were used for in vitro experiments. The results showed that inhibition by 4C, a specific inhibitor, and GPR91 knockout promoted mineralization in P. gingivalis-infected osteoblasts. Surprisingly, GPR91 knockdown decreased the migration ability of osteoblasts. Moreover, compared with P. gingivalis-infected WT osteoblasts, GPR91-/- osteoblasts exhibited decreased RANKL production, and conditioned media (CM) from bacteria-infected GPR91-/- osteoblasts suppressed the formation of osteoclast precursors. Moreover, P. gingivalis mediated the role of GPR91 in osteoblast mineralization by activating the NF-κB pathway. These findings suggest that GPR91 activation reduces mineralization of P. gingivalis-infected osteoblasts and promotes osteoclastogenesis in macrophages. Therefore, targeting GPR91 may mitigate the loss of alveolar bone during bacterial infection.

Abstract
Periodontitis affects up to 40% of adults over 60 years old and is a consequence of gingivitis. Periodontitis is characterized by a chronic inflammation, periodontal damage, and alveolar bone resorption. The nuclear factor erythroid 2-related factor 2 (NFE2L2 or NRF2)/Kelch-like ECH-Associated Protein 1 (KEAP1) (NRF2/KEAP1) signaling pathway plays a key role in periodontitis by modulating redox balance and inflammation of the periodontium. However, NRF2 expression is decreased in gingival tissues of patients with periodontitis while oxidative stress is significantly increased in this pathology. Oxidative stress and lipopolysaccharide (LPS) produced by gram-negative bacteria favor the production of inflammatory causing periodontal inflammation and favoring alveolar bone. In this review, we analyzed the current literature regarding the role of natural and synthetic compounds in modulating the NRF2/KEAP1 pathway in in vitro and in vivo models of periodontitis in order to evaluate new potential treatments of periodontitis that can improve the outcome of this disease.

Abstract
OBJECTIVE The objective of this study was to clarify the association between preoperative periodontitis and postoperative systemic inflammation in patients with gastric cancer. SUBJECTS AND METHODS This retrospective cohort study analyzed data from 140 gastric cancer patients who underwent surgery at Hiroshima University Hospital between May 2019 and May 2022. Periodontal inflamed surface area (PISA) scores were determined to assess periodontitis severity using modified Nesse's methods. Propensity score matching was used to compare patients with high and low PISA scores (> or < the median PISA score of 92.4, respectively). Propensity scores were calculated using a logistic regression model, based on 17 clinical parameters: age, sex, smoking, alcohol consumption, hypertension, diabetes, dyslipidemia, cardiovascular disease, stroke, clinical stage, surgical procedure, surgical approach, neoadjuvant chemotherapy, surgery duration, blood loss during surgery, remaining teeth, and denture use. RESULTS Thirty-seven patients were propensity-score-matched. Participants with high PISA scores had a higher incidence of surgical site infection (10.5%) than those with low PISA scores (5.3%). Moreover, participants with high PISA scores had significantly higher C-reactive protein levels on postoperative days 1 than those with low PISA scores. CONCLUSION Preoperative periodontitis may determine the level of postoperative systemic inflammation in patients with gastric cancer.

Abstract
Although fine dust is linked to numerous health issues, including cardiovascular, neurological, respiratory, and cancerous diseases, research on its effects on oral health remains limited. In this study, we investigated the protective effects of mature hemp stem extract-induced exosomes (MSEIEs) on periodontal cells exposed to fine dust. Using various methods, including microRNA profiling, PCR, flow cytometry, immunocytochemistry, ELISA, and Alizarin O staining, we found that MSE treatment upregulated key microRNAs, such as hsa-miR-122-5p, hsa-miR-1301-3p, and hsa-let-7e-5p, associated with vital biological functions. MSEIEs exhibited three primary protective functions: suppressing inflammatory genes while activating anti-inflammatory ones, promoting the differentiation of periodontal ligament stem cells (PDLSCs) into osteoblasts and other cells, and regulating LL-37 and MCP-1 expression. These findings suggest that MSEIEs have potential as functional biomaterials for applications in pharmaceuticals, cosmetics, and food industries.

Abstract
We aimed to examine the correlation between periodontitis and body size phenotypes in 7301 participants without diagnosed chronic diseases in the Korean National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey 2013-2015. The participants were categorized into the following body size phenotype groups based on body mass index and the presence of metabolic syndrome: metabolically healthy normal weight (MHNW), metabolically abnormal normal weight (MANW), metabolically healthy obese (MHO), and metabolically abnormal obese (MAO). The prevalence rates of mild and severe periodontitis were 18.1% and 7.5%, respectively. Patients with periodontitis were older, current smokers, had a lower family income, were less likely to engage in regular tooth brushing or exercise, and had a higher body mass index and glucose levels. Periodontitis was more prevalent in the MANW and MAO groups than in the MHNW and MHO groups. Compared with the MHNW phenotype, the MAO and MANW phenotypes were significantly associated with mild and severe periodontitis, and the MHO phenotype was significantly associated with mild periodontitis. The MANW and MAO phenotypes are independent risk factors for periodontitis in adults without diagnosed chronic diseases. To enhance public health, a greater focus and effective approaches for identifying metabolic disease phenotypes among individuals with periodontal disease may be clinically relevant.

Abstract
Periodontitis can disrupt oral and gut microbiota, leading to dysbiosis that affects overall systemic health. Besides the spread of periodontal pathogens by the hematogenous route, they can also be translocated into the gastrointestinal tract, possibly intervening in the neoplastic process in the gastrointestinal tract. This manuscript reviews the relationship between oral and gut microbiota due to periodontitis, discussing systemic health implications and potential links to gastrointestinal cancer. This article highlights the significance and effect of dysbiosis in the gut, emphasizing the importance of maintaining oral health to prevent systemic diseases. Lastly, it will go through therapeutic innovations such as probiotics and oral microbiota analysis tools for systemic disease detection. These findings will mark the integration of oral health management in clinical practice to lower systemic disease risk and improve overall patient outcomes. Aim of work: This manuscript aims to unravel the pathological interaction between oral and gut microbiota and their bidirectional effect on systemic diseases. Materials and methods: The review was performed using the MEDLINE and ScienceDirect databases. Reviewed articles were published in English between the year 2015 and 2024. The search used keywords such as ("oral microbiota" AND "periodontal disease") OR ("oral microbiota" AND "gastrointestinal cancer") OR ("Porphyromonas gingivalis" AND "periodontal disease") OR ("Helicobacter pylori" AND "gastric cancer") OR ("gut microbiome" AND "inflammatory bowel disease") OR ("oral microbiome" AND "systemic diseases"). Conclusions: The dysbiotic change in the oral cavity due to periodontitis is linked directly and indirectly to systemic diseases such as IBS, neurodegenerative diseases, muscle joint diseases, respiratory infections, and gastrointestinal cancer; this underscores the importance of maintaining oral hygiene for prophylaxis of oral diseases and the prevention of systemic diseases. A better understanding of the interconnections between oral health and systemic diseases will integrate oral health management to offer new prevention, diagnostic, and treatment opportunities to improve overall patient outcomes.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Activation of the IL-33/ST2 axis leads to the production of proinflammatory cytokines and thus to the triggering of osteoclastogenesis, which is why it plays an important role in the immunopathogenesis of periodontitis. The aim of this study was to compare IL-33 levels in serum, plasma, saliva and gingival crevicular fluid (GCF) of subjects with chronic periodontitis (CP) in comparison with the control group (CG). METHODS This systematic review and meta-analysis followed the guidelines of the Preferred Reporting Items for Systematic Reviews and Meta-Analysis (PRISMA) and was registered in the Open Science Framework (OSF): https://doi.org/10.17605/OSF.IO/YHUWA . Six electronic databases were used for study identification; PubMed, Google Scholar, ScienceDirect, Web of Science, Scopus and Dentistry & Oral Sciences Source from March 10, 2012 to April 30, 2024. The Joanna Briggs Institute (JBI) tool was used to assess the quality of the included cross-sectional articles and clinical trials. RESULTS Of the 949 articles identified, 14 were included according to the inclusion and exclusion criteria. The total number of individuals studied in the included investigations was 814 of whom 445 had CP and 369 were healthy. The reported age range was from 20 to 50 years, with a mean age ± standard deviation of 40.29 ± 7.83 years. Four hundred and twenty-six (52%) patients were men and 388 (48%) were women. Meta-analysis revealed that there is an increase in IL-33 levels in plasma, saliva and GCF of subjects with CP compared to CG (p = * < 0.05). CONCLUSIONS This study found a significant increase in IL-33 levels in different biological samples (plasma, saliva and GCF) of individuals with CP compared to CG, thus IL-33 has potential to be a biomarker in the diagnosis of periodontitis.

Abstract
Surface pre-reacted glass-ionomer (S-PRG) is a new bioactive filler utilized for the restoration of decayed teeth by its ability to release six bioactive ions that prevent the adhesion of dental plaque to the tooth surface. Since ionic liquids are reported to facilitate transepithelial penetration, we reasoned that S-PRG applied to root caries could impact the osteoclasts (OCs) in the proximal alveolar bone. Therefore, this study aimed to investigate the effect of S-PRG eluate solution on RANKL-induced OC-genesis and mineral dissolution in vitro. Using RAW264.7 cells as OC precursor cells (OPCs), TRAP staining and pit formation assays were conducted to monitor OC-genesis and mineral dissolution, respectively, while OC-genesis-associated gene expression was measured using quantitative real-time PCR (qPCR). Expression of NFATc1, a master regulator of OC differentiation, and the phosphorylation of MAPK signaling molecules were measured using Western blotting. S-PRG eluate dilutions at 1/200 and 1/400 showed no cytotoxicity to RAW264.7 cells but did significantly suppress both OC-genesis and mineral dissolution. The same concentrations of S-PRG eluate downregulated the RANKL-mediated induction of OCSTAMP and CATK mRNAs, as well as the expression of NFATc1 protein and the phosphorylation of ERK, JNK, and p38. These results demonstrate that S-PRG eluate can downregulate RANKL-induced OC-genesis and mineral dissolution, suggesting that its application to root caries might prevent alveolar bone resorption.

Abstract
Objective To preliminarily explore the composition characteristics of gut microbiota in mice with type 2 diabetes mellitus (T2DM) and experimental periodontitis, and their correlation with serum IL-17 levels, aiming to provide new insights and evidence for related experimental studies. Methods A total of 42 SPF-grade C57BL/6J mice were randomly selected, with 24 used for T2DM modeling. Successfully modeled T2DM mice were divided into the T2DM group (ND group, n=8) and T2DM with experimental periodontitis group (PD group, n=8). Non-T2DM mice were divided into the blank control group (NC group, n=8) and the experimental periodontitis group (NP group, n=8). After modeling, body weight and fasting plasma glucose (FPG) were measured weekly. Each group of mice underwent an oral glucose tolerance test (OGTT) and an insulin tolerance test (ITT). Six weeks after modeling experimental periodontitis, serum IL-17 levels were measured using ELISA, intestinal inflammation was assessed using HE staining, and gut microbiota composition in cecal contents was analyzed by 16S rRNA sequencing to determine its correlation with serum IL-17 levels. Results FPG in the PD group was higher than in the ND group, with a statistically significant difference in the 12th week (p<0.05). The glucose tolerance level in the PD group was lower than in the ND group (p<0.01). Compared with the NC group, other groups showed varying degrees of inflammatory cell infiltration in the intestinal mucosa, and serum IL-17 levels were lower in both the ND and PD groups compared to the NC group (p<0.01), with the PD group also lower than the NP group (p<0.01). The Shannon and Pielou-e indices of gut microbiota in the PD group were significantly lower than those in the NP group (p<0.05). In terms of microbiota composition, Firmicutes were increased in both the ND and PD groups compared to the NC and NP groups (p<0.05), while Bacteroidetes were decreased (p<0.05). Proteobacteria were increased in the PD group compared to the ND group (p<0.05). The abundance of Bacteroidetes and the Bacteroidetes/Firmicutes ratio was moderately positively correlated with serum IL-17 levels (p<0.01) and moderately negatively correlated with blood glucose levels (p<0.01); serum IL-17 levels were strongly negatively correlated with blood glucose levels (p<0.01). Conclusion Comorbidity of experimental periodontitis and T2DM may exacerbate glucose metabolism impairment in T2DM mice by increasing the abundance of Proteobacteria and intestinal mucosal damage. Serum IL-17 levels may serve as an indicator of gut microbiota dysbiosis in T2DM mice with experimental periodontitis.

Abstract
Apical periodontitis is an inflammatory disease triggered by oral pathogens invading necrotic root canals. The aim of this study was to evaluate the coronal and root canal bacterial community profiles in primary endodontic infections with different periapical (PAI) indices in comparison to oral mucosa controls. A total of 31 patients with primary apical periodontitis, 14 with PAI-1 and 17 with PAI-3 were recruited. Microbial specimens from mucosa (control samples) and endodontic necrotic tissues were collected in each patient. Microbiota composition was studied through 16S ribosomal RNA gene amplicon sequencing analysis. Overall, 2953 taxa from 168 different genera of 451 various microbial species were retrieved in the controls and PAI-1 and PAI-3 groups. Firmicutes is the predominant phylum in the oral controls (34.5%) and PAI-1 (44.4%) groups, while Bacteroidetes is predominant in PAI-3 (38.6%). The Proteobacteria (21.5%) and Fusobacteria (12.5%) relative abundance is higher in oral controls while that of Synergistetes is higher in the PAI-1 (3.5%) and PAI-3 (2.5%) groups, being almost absent in controls (less than 0.1%). Most of the increased bacterial species found in the PAI groups were strict anaerobes. A diminished microbial diversity was found in apical periodontitis with higher PAI. These samples were also characterized by an increase in bacteria belonging to phyla and genera with an increased anaerobic character.

Association of oral health with all-cause and cause-specific mortality in older Chinese adults: A 14-year follow-up of the Guangzhou Biobank Cohort study. J Glob Health 2024; 14:04111. Abstract
Background Poor oral hygiene is associated with overall wellness, but evidence regarding associations of oral health with all-cause mortality remain inconclusive. We aimed to examine the associations of oral health with all-cause and cause-specific mortality in middle-aged and older Chinese adults. Methods 28 006 participants were recruited from 2003-2008 and followed up until 2021. Oral health was assessed by face-to-face interview and causes of death was identified via record linkage. Cox regression yielded hazard ratios (HRs) and 95% confidence intervals (CIs) with adjustment of multiple potential confounders. Results During an average of 14.3 years of follow-up, we found that a lower frequency of toothbrushing was associated with higher risks of all-cause mortality with a dose-response pattern (P for trend <0.001). Specially, the adjusted HR (95% CI) (vs. ≥ twice/d) was 1.16 (1.10, 1.22) (P < 0.001) for brushing once/d and 1.27 (1.00, 1.61) (P = 0.048) for < once/d. Similar associations were also found for cardiovascular disease (CVD), stroke, and respiratory disease mortality, but not for ischemic heart disease (IHD) and cancer mortality. A greater number of missing teeth was also associated with higher risks of all-cause, CVD, stroke, and respiratory disease mortality with a dose-response pattern (all P for trend <0.05). The association of missing teeth with all-cause mortality was stronger in lower-educated participants. Conclusions Both less frequent toothbrushing and a greater number of missing teeth were associated with higher risks of all-cause, CVD, stroke, and respiratory disease mortality, showing dose-response patterns, but not with IHD and cancer mortality. Moreover, the dose-response association of missing teeth with all-cause mortality was stronger in lower-educated participants.

Abstract
Periodontitis is a multifactorial chronic inflammatory disease that affects the periodontium and overall oral health and is primarily caused by a dysbiotic gingival biofilm, which includes, among others, Gram-negative bacteria such as Porphyromonas gingivalis, Actinobacillus actinomycetemcomitans, and Tannerella forsythensis that colonize gingival tissues and that can lead, if not properly treated, to periodontal tissue destruction and tooth loss. In the last few decades, several large-scale epidemiological studies have evidenced that mild and severe forms of periodontitis are strictly bilaterally associated with several cardiovascular diseases (CVDs), stroke, and endothelial dysfunction. Specifically, it is hypothesized that patients with severe periodontitis would have compromised endothelial function, a crucial step in the pathophysiology of atherosclerosis and several CVD forms. In this regard, it was postulated that periodontal treatment would ameliorate endothelial dysfunction, hence bolstering the notion that therapeutic approaches targeted at diminishing cardiovascular risk factors and different forms of periodontal treatment could improve several CVD biomarker outcomes in the short- and long-term in CVD patients. The aim of this review is to update and analyze the link between periodontitis and CVD, focusing on the inflammatory nature of periodontitis and its correlation with CVD, the effects of periodontal therapy on endothelial dysfunction and oxidative stress, and the impact of such therapy on CVD biomarkers and outcomes. The article also discusses future research directions in this field.

Abstract
Periodontitis is a common oral condition that can have a significant impact on the overall health of the body. In recent years, attention has been paid to potential relationships between periodontitis and various hematological disorders. This publication aims to present information available in the literature on this relationship, focusing on examples of red blood cell disorders (such as aplastic anemia and sickle cell anemia) and white blood cell disorders (such as cyclic neutropenia, maladaptive trained immunity, clonal hematopoiesis, leukemia, and multiple myeloma). Understanding these associations can help physicians and dentists better diagnose, monitor, and treat patients associated with both groups of conditions, highlighting the need for interdisciplinary care for patients with oral disorders and hematologic diseases.

Abstract
Human papillomavirus (HPV) is a circular, double-stranded DNA virus and recognized as the most prevalent sexually transmitted infectious agent worldwide. The HPV life cycle encompasses three primary stages. First, the virus infiltrates the basal cells of the stratified epidermis. Second, there is a low-level expression of viral genes and preservation of the viral genome in the basal layer. Lastly, productive replication of HPV occurs in differentiated cells. An effective immune response, involving various immune cells, including innate immunity, keratinocytes, dendritic cells, and natural killer T cells, is instrumental in clearing HPV infection and thwarting the development of HPV-associated tumors. Vaccines have demonstrated their efficacy in preventing genital warts, high-grade precancerous lesions, and cancers in females. In males, the vaccines can also aid in preventing genital warts, anal precancerous lesions, and cancer. This comprehensive review aims to provide a thorough and detailed exploration of HPV infections, delving into its genetic characteristics, life cycle, pathogenesis, and the role of high-risk and low-risk HPV strains. In addition, this review seeks to elucidate the intricate immune interactions that govern HPV infections, spanning from innate immunity to adaptive immune responses, as well as examining the evasion mechanisms used by the virus. Furthermore, the article discusses the current landscape of HPV vaccines and common treatments, contributing to a holistic understanding of HPV and its associated diseases.

Abstract
Periodontal ligament (PDL) cells play a crucial role in maintaining periodontal integrity and function by providing cell sources for ligament regeneration. While biophysical stimulation is known to regulate cell behaviors and functions, its impact on epigenetics of PDL cells has not yet been elucidated. Here, we aimed to investigate the cytoskeletal changes, epigenetic modifications, and lineage commitment of PDL cells following the application of stretch stimuli to PDL. PDL cells were subjected to stretching (0.1 Hz, 10 %). Subsequently, changes in focal adhesion, tubulin, and histone modification were observed. The survival ability in inflammatory conditions was also evaluated. Furthermore, using a rat hypo-occlusion model, we verified whether these phenomena are observed in vivo. Stretched PDL cells showed maximal histone 3 acetylation (H3Ace) at 2 h, aligning perpendicularly to the stretch direction. RNA sequencing revealed stretching altered gene sets related to mechanotransduction, histone modification, reactive oxygen species (ROS) metabolism, and differentiation. We further found that anchorage, cell elongation, and actin/microtubule acetylation were highly upregulated with mechanosensitive chromatin remodelers such as H3Ace and histone H3 trimethyl lysine 9 (H3K9me3) adopting euchromatin status. Inhibitor studies showed mechanotransduction-mediated chromatin modification alters PDL cells behaviors. Stretched PDL cells displayed enhanced survival against bacterial toxin (C12-HSL) or ROS (H2O2) attack. Furthermore, cyclic stretch priming enhanced the osteoclast and osteoblast differentiation potential of PDL cells, as evidenced by upregulation of lineage-specific genes. In vivo, PDL cells from normally loaded teeth displayed an elongated morphology and higher levels of H3Ace compared to PDL cells with hypo-occlusion, where mechanical stimulus is removed. Overall, these data strongly link external physical forces to subsequent mechanotransduction and epigenetic changes, impacting gene expression and multiple cellular behaviors, providing important implications in cell biology and tissue regeneration.

Abstract
OBJECTIVE The aim of this work was to explore the potential of polyphenol supplement consumption in enhancing the treatment of periodontitis and diabetes mellitus in both diabetic animals and humans. MATERIALS AND METHODS A comprehensive search across eight databases (MEDLINE, EBSCO, Taylor & Francis, PRIMO, Web of Science, Wiley Online Library, ScienceDirect, and SAGE Journals) and two registers (ClinicalTrials.gov and Cochrane Library Trials) was conducted. Methodological quality assessment employed the Cochrane Collaboration Risk of Bias Assessment Tool for randomised controlled trials and the Systematic Review Centre for Laboratory Animal Experimentation Risk of Bias Tool for experimental animal studies. RESULTS Ten articles meeting inclusion criteria were identified. Three clinical studies demonstrated significant reductions in probing depth (PD) and clinical attachment loss (CAL). Ginger supplementation showed a decrease in CAL (-0.57 ± 0.50 vs. -0.14 ± 0.35, p = 0.003) and PD (-0.52 ± 0.51 vs. -0.19 ± 0.51, p = 0.04), while resveratrol supplementation exhibited a reduction in PD (-1.1 ± 0.58 vs. -0.6 ± 0.47, p < 0.001). Additionally, cranberry juice supplementation led to a decrease in PD (-0.56 ± 0.03, p < 0.001). However, there was no significant improvement in inflammation status. Although polyphenol supplementation did not impact fasting blood glucose levels, it did result in improved insulin resistance (3.66 ± 0.97 vs. 4.49 ± 1.56, p = 0.045). In diabetic animals, six studies reported a significant reduction (p < 0.05) in bone loss along with marked improvements in inflammation status. CONCLUSIONS Despite the promising results observed in the included studies, the overall evidence supporting the positive effects of polyphenols on periodontal and diabetes mellitus status, along with their anti-inflammatory properties, remains inadequate.

Abstract
Cardiovascular diseases (CVDs) are a leading cause of morbidity and mortality worldwide with a high socioeconomic burden. Increasing evidence supports a convincing connection with increased cardiovascular risk of periodontal diseases (PD), a group of widespread, debilitating, and costly dysbiotic relapsing-remitting inflammatory diseases of the tissues supporting the teeth. Herein, we ensembled the best available evidence on the connection between CVDs and PD to review the recently emerging concept of the latter as a non-traditional risk factor for CVDs. We focused on oral dysbiosis, inflammation-associated molecular and cellular mechanisms, and epigenetic changes as potential causative links between PD and CVDs. The available evidence on the effects of periodontal treatment on cardiovascular risk factors and diseases was also described.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Since oral health issues can have a negative influence on a person's physical functioning, social status, and wellbeing, oral health-related quality of life (OHRQoL) becomes an indispensable part of overall health. Previous published studies report that periodontitis (PD) and psoriatic arthritis (PsA) have a significant negative impact on OHRQoL. Based on these findings, it would be reasonable to assume that patients with coexisting PsA and PD would see a comparable or maybe synergistic effect on their OHRQoL. Hence, the aim of the present study is to evaluate the OHRQoL and its impact among subjects with concurrent PsA and PD. MATERIAL AND METHODS The present study was a comparative, cross-sectional investigation. A total of 200 participants were categorized into four groups- PD-PsA (n = 50), PsA (n = 50), PD (n = 50), and healthy controls (n = 50). Demographic data and periodontal parameters-plaque index, sites with gingival bleeding, probing pocket depth, gingival recession, and clinical attachment level were recorded for all the four groups. Number of mobile teeth due to periodontitis was recorded for the PSA-PD and PD groups. OHIP-14 questionnaire was administered to all the four groups. Collected data was then subjected to statistical analysis. RESULTS The severity of OHIP-14 summary scores was highest in the PsA-PD group (18.06 ± 11.22) followed by the PD group (17.02 ± 9.99) and lowest in the healthy group (6.32 ± 5.59) (p < .0001). The scores of all the domains- oral pain, oral function, orofacial appearance and psychological impact were highest among the PsA-PD group followed by the PD group (p < .0001). The combined interaction of PsA and PD on the OHRQoL was statistically significant (F = 6.33, p = .012). Results of the multiple linear regression analysis indicated that there was a moderate collective significant effect between age, past dental visit, frequency of daily tooth brushing, use of other oral hygiene aids, and OHIP-14 (F(3,196) = 13.08, p < .001, R2 = 0.17, adjusted R2 = 0.15). CONCLUSION The negative impact on OHRQoL was highest in the patients with concurrent presence of PD with PsA followed by those with PD alone. While the summary scores and dimensional scores of OHIP-14 were insignificant when patients with PsA-PD and PD alone were compared, these scores were significantly higher in patients with PsA-PD than patients with PsA alone.

Abstract
Periodontitis is a chronic inflammatory disease of the periodontium, or the supportive tissues around the tooth. This disease has been related to different risk factors, such as the presence of plaque and calculus, tobacco smoking, low socioeconomic status, and the immune state of the host. Importantly, the chronic inflammatory environment generated by periodontitis may lead to tooth loss and diverse systemic complications, such as cardiovascular disease, osteoarthritis and metabolic disease. Recent investigations have supported the role of obesity as a risk factor for periodontitis. Furthermore, studies have found obesity to compromise healing after periodontal therapy; however, the mechanisms underlying this association are not well understood. Proteins called 'adipokines' could be the factor linking obesity to periodontitis. Adipokines are bioactive molecules with hormonal properties and a structure similar to cytokines produced by the adipose tissue. Although adipokines have both pro-and anti-inflammatory effects, the shift towards pro-inflammatory actions occurs when the adipose tissue becomes pathological, as observe in the progression of conditions such as obesity or adiposopathy. This article reviews the role of adipokines in the pathophysiology and progression of periodontitis by focusing on their impact on inflammation and the molecular mechanisms through which adipokines contribute to the onset and development of periodontitis.

Abstract
Staphylococcus aureus is a commensal bacterium in humans, but it sometimes causes opportunistic infectious diseases such as suppurative skin disease, pneumonia, and enteritis. Therefore, it is important to determine the prevalence of S. aureus and methicillin-resistant S. aureus (MRSA) in individuals, especially older adults. In this study, we investigated the prevalence of S. aureus and MRSA in the oral cavity and feces of residents in long-term care facilities (LTCFs). S. aureus was isolated from the oral cavity of 61/178 (34.3%) participants, including 28 MRSA-positive participants (15.7%), and from the feces of 35/127 (27.6%) participants, including 16 MRSA-positive participants (12.6%). S. aureus and MRSA were isolated from both sites in 19/127 individuals (15.0%) and 10/127 individuals (7.9%), respectively. Among 19 participants with S. aureus isolation from both sites, 17 participants showed the same sequence type (ST) type. Then, we analyzed the correlation of S. aureus and MRSA in the oral cavity and rectum with the participant's condition. S. aureus and MRSA positivity in the oral cavity was significantly related to tube feeding, while there was no correlation of rectal S. aureus/MRSA with any factors. Our findings regarding the oral inhabitation of MRSA and its risk factors indicate the importance of considering countermeasures against MRSA infection in LTCFs.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Down syndrome (DS) is distinguished by cognitive disability, a concave profile, and systemic complications. Oral diseases have been reported to be common in DS patients. OBJECTIVE To investigate the association between DS and periodontal diseases. METHODS Two independent reviewers searched six bibliographic databases up to January 2023 and used additional search methods to identify published studies on gingivitis or periodontitis in people with and without DS. Meta-analysis, risk of bias, sensibility analysis, publication bias, and evidence grading were all carried out. RESULTS Twenty-six studies were included for analysis. There was a tendency for increased plaque accumulation, periodontal probing, periodontal attachment level, bleeding on probing and indices in DS individuals. Meta-analysis of 11 studies showed a significant association between DS and periodontitis (OR 3.93; 95% CI 1.81-8.53). Probing depth was significantly high in individuals with DS as compared to controls (mean difference 0.40 mm; 95% CI 0.09-0.70). Gingivitis was significantly associated (OR 1.93; 95% CI 1.09-3.41) with DS in four studies. The evidence was classified as 'moderate certainty'. CONCLUSION Medium/low-quality studies demonstrate that Down syndrome is strongly associated with periodontitis and moderately associated with gingivitis.

Abstract
Periodontitis is a complex condition. Left untreated, it leads to tooth loss and the need for prosthetic treatment. The incidence of periodontitis is steadily increasing, so new methods are being sought to aid in the diagnosis of the disease. Among the methods postulated is the determination of concentrations of bioactive compounds which include extracellular matrix metalloproteinases (MMPs). These enzymes are present in various structural elements of the stomatognathic system. The most promising enzyme of this group appears to be metalloproteinase 8 (MMP-8). MMP-8 assays are performed in gingival fluid or saliva, and MMP-8 levels have been shown to be higher in patients with periodontitis compared to healthy subjects and correlated with some clinical parameters of the condition and the severity of the disease. In addition, the preliminary usefulness of this enzyme in evaluating the effectiveness of periodontal treatment and doxycycline therapy has been demonstrated. Determination of the active form of MMP-8 (aMMP-8) in oral rinse fluid using off-the-shelf assays shows the highest potential. Despite reports about aMMP-8 and promising data on the role of MMP-8 in periodontal diagnosis, a clear determination of the usefulness of this enzyme requires further research.

Abstract
Periodontitis, which is related to various systemic diseases, is a chronic inflammatory disease caused by periodontal dysbiosis of the microbiota. Multiple factors can influence the interaction of periodontitis and associated inflammatory disorders, among which host immunity is an important contributor to this interaction. Innate immunity can be activated aberrantly because of the systemic inflammation induced by periodontitis. This aberrant activation not only exacerbates periodontal tissue damage but also impairs systemic health, triggering or aggravating inflammatory comorbidities. Therefore, innate immunity is a potential therapeutic target for periodontitis and associated inflammatory comorbidities. This review delineates analogous aberrations of innate immune cells in periodontitis and comorbid conditions such as atherosclerosis, diabetes, obesity, and rheumatoid arthritis. The mechanisms behind these changes in innate immune cells are discussed, including trained immunity and clonal hematopoiesis of indeterminate potential (CHIP), which can mediate the abnormal activation and myeloid-biased differentiation of hematopoietic stem and progenitor cells. Besides, the expansion of myeloid-derived suppressor cells (MDSCs), which have immunosuppressive and osteolytic effects on peripheral tissues, also contributes to the interaction between periodontitis and its inflammatory comorbidities. The potential treatment targets for relieving the risk of both periodontitis and systemic conditions are also elucidated, such as the modulation of innate immunity cells and mediators, the regulation of trained immunity and CHIP, as well as the inhibition of MDSCs' expansion.

Abstract
Introduction Tooth loss is associated with increased mortality risk; however, the mechanism underlying this is still not clear. The objective of this study was to explore whether frailty mediates the association between tooth loss and mortality risk among the oldest old individuals. Methods The participants were followed up from 1998 to 2018 in the Chinese Longitudinal Healthy Longevity Survey (CLHLS). Frailty was constructed following a standard procedure. Mortality, frailty, and tooth loss were applied as the outcome, mediator, and independent variables, respectively. The Cox model was fitted, including possible confounders, for causal mediation analysis. A total effect (TE), an average causal mediation effect (ACME), an average direct effect (ADE), and a proportion mediated (PM) effect were calculated. Results During the 129,936 person-years at risk, 31,899 individuals with a mean age of 91.79 years were included. The TE and ADE of severe tooth loss on mortality were 0.12 (95% CI: 0.08, 0.15) and 0.09 (95% CI: 0.05, 0.13); the ACME of frailty was 0.03 (95% CI: 0.02, 0.03) with 21.56% of the TE being mediated. Discussion This study illustrated that tooth loss is associated with mortality, and frailty appeared to mediate the relationship. It is recommended that oral health indicators and frailty status be incorporated into routine geriatric assessments to promote optimal oral health and non-frailty status.

Abstract
Ubiquitin-specific proteases (USPs), as one of the deubiquitinating enzymes (DUBs) families, regulate the fate of proteins and signaling pathway transduction by removing ubiquitin chains from the target proteins. USPs are essential for the modulation of a variety of physiological processes, such as DNA repair, cell metabolism and differentiation, epigenetic modulations as well as protein stability. Recently, extensive research has demonstrated that USPs exert a significant impact on innate and adaptive immune reactions, metabolic syndromes, inflammatory disorders, and infection via post-translational modification processes. This review summarizes the important roles of the USPs in the onset and progression of inflammatory diseases, including periodontitis, pneumonia, atherosclerosis, inflammatory bowel disease, sepsis, hepatitis, diabetes, and obesity. Moreover, we highlight a comprehensive overview of the pathogenesis of USPs in these inflammatory diseases as well as post-translational modifications in the inflammatory responses and pave the way for future prospect of targeted therapies in these inflammatory diseases.

Abstract
Introduction Periodontitis is delineated by a dysbiotic microbiome at sites of lesions accompanied by a dysregulated persistent inflammatory response that undermines the integrity of the periodontium. The interplay of the altered microbial ecology and warning signals from host cells would be a critical feature for maintaining or re-establishing homeostasis in these tissues. Methods This study used a nonhuman primate model (Macaca mulatta) with naturally-occurring periodontitis (n = 34) and experimental ligature-induced periodontitis (n = 36) to describe the features of gene expression for an array of damage-associate molecular patterns (DAMPs) or alarmins within the gingival tissues. The animals were age stratified into: ≤3 years (Young), 7-12 years (Adolescent), 12-15 years (Adult) and 17-23 years (Aged). Gingival tissue biopsies were examined via microarray. The analysis focused on 51 genes representative of the DAMPs/alarmins family of host cell warning factors and 18 genes associated with tissue destructive processed in the gingival tissues. Bacterial plaque samples were collected by curette sampling and 16S rRNA gene sequences used to describe the oral microbiome. Results A subset of DAMPs/alarmins were expressed in healthy and naturally-occurring periodontitis tissues in the animals and suggested local effects on gingival tissues leading to altered levels of DAMPs/alarmins related to age and disease. Significant differences from adult healthy levels were most frequently observed in the young and adolescent animals with few representatives in this gene array altered in the healthy aged gingival tissues. Of the 51 target genes, only approximately ⅓ were altered by ≥1.5-fold in any of the age groups of animals during disease, with those increases observed during disease initiation. Distinctive positive and negative correlations were noted with the DAMP/alarmin gene levels and comparative expression changes of tissue destructive molecules during disease across the age groups. Finally, specific correlations of DAMP/alarmin genes and relative abundance of particular microbes were observed in health and resolution samples in younger animals, while increased correlations during disease in the older groups were noted. Conclusions Thus, using this human-like preclinical model of induced periodontitis, we demonstrated the dynamics of the activation of the DAMP/alarmin warning system in the gingival tissues that showed some specific differences based on age.

Abstract
The microbiome has shown a correlation with the diet and lifestyle of each population in health and disease, the ability to communicate at the cellular level with the host through innate and adaptative immune receptors, and therefore an important role in modulating inflammatory process related to the establishment and progression of cancer. The oral cavity is one of the most important interaction windows between the human body and the environment, allowing the entry of an important number of microorganisms and their passage across the gastrointestinal tract and lungs. In this review, the contribution of the microbiome network to the establishment of systemic diseases like cancer is analyzed through their synergistic interactions and bidirectional crosstalk in the oral-gut-lung axis as well as its communication with the host cells. Moreover, the impact of the characteristic microbiota of each population in the formation of the multiomics molecular metafirm of the oral-gut-lung axis is also analyzed through state-of-the-art sequencing techniques, which allow a global study of the molecular processes involved of the flow of the microbiota environmental signals through cancer-related cells and its relationship with the establishment of the transcription factor network responsible for the control of regulatory processes involved with tumorigenesis.

Abstract
Zirconia implants have gained popularity for their aesthetic appeal and biocompatibility, making them a preferred choice for anterior teeth replacement. This study explores the interaction between telomere length and inflammatory biomarkers in seven cases of zirconia implant placement to gain insights into postoperative cellular aging, inflammatory responses, and long-term outcomes. Zirconia implants offer advantages over titanium implants, as they do not corrode or release metal ions, leading to potential inflammation and implant failure. Monitoring immune and inflammatory biomarkers is essential to assess inflammation initiation, severity, and progression. C-reactive protein (CRP) and pro-inflammatory cytokines, like interleukin-6 (IL-6) and tumor necrosis factor-alpha (TNF-α), play crucial roles in host immune responses, while anti-inflammatory cytokines, including interleukin-10 (IL-10), regulate and dampen immune responses. Achieving a delicate balance between pro- and anti-inflammatory cytokines is vital for maintaining a healthy immune response and preventing chronic inflammatory conditions. Telomeres, protective structures present at chromosome ends, influence cellular aging and mitochondrial function. Shorter telomeres are associated with impaired mitochondrial function, increased oxidative stress, and cellular senescence, while longer telomeres are linked to reduced inflammation and improved immune function. Understanding these mechanisms is essential for addressing age-related conditions and promoting overall well-being. In this case series, we investigated the interaction between telomere length and inflammatory biomarkers in patients who received zirconia dental implants. The study aims to improve our understanding of postoperative cellular aging, inflammatory responses, and the biocompatibility of zirconia implants, potentially leading to improved treatment protocols and patient outcomes. This innovative assessment of telomere length and inflammatory biomarkers in the context of zirconia implants provides novel insights into the field of dental implantology. By exploring the effects of zirconia implants on cellular health and inflammation, this study contributes to advancements in implant technology and patient care.

Abstract
This review focuses on the fact that oral disorders are not merely localized to the mouth; in a broader sense, they also have a more significant impact on systemic health. In this review, we tried to bring to the notice various complications of periodontitis on the body's major organ systems. It has also been suggested that there is a potential connection between periodontitis and certain systemic disorders. Reviewing this fascinating topic is necessary. The objective is to create a thorough body of knowledge on the subject that is simple to access, alert medical professionals to the connection between dental health and systemic health, and highlight the necessity of a more thorough incorporation of medical and dental training. Periodontitis is a probable risk factor for various problems connected to the cardiovascular, pulmonary, endocrine, musculoskeletal, central nervous, and reproductive systems. It is a continual likely source of infection. Oral health affects overall health, and if extensive healthcare is ever accomplished, dental health should never be considered a distinct, remote, and lower significant part of health wholly disconnected from quality of life. One should never underestimate oral disorders as being acute and always curable. People should take utmost care and take the condition seriously to prevent significant complications.

Abstract
We sought to evaluate the effects of non-surgical periodontal treatment (NSPT) on periodontal clinical parameters, systemic blood pressure (BP), and plasma levels of systemic inflammation markers in patients with combined refractory arterial hypertension (RAH) and stage III grade B periodontitis. Twenty-seven participants with RAH and periodontitis received NSPT. The analyzed clinical parameters were probing depth (PD), clinical attachment level (CAL), bleeding on probing (BOP), and plaque index (PI). An assessment was performed for systemic BP, complete blood count, coagulogram, creatinine measurement, C-reactive protein (CRP), glycated hemoglobin, cholesterol, glutamic oxaloacetic transaminase, glutamate pyruvic transaminase, waist-hip ratio, and body mass index. In the follow-up period, twenty-two patients were evaluated at baseline and after 90 and 180 days. The data were submitted for statistical analysis (α = 0.05%). As expected, the clinical results showed a significant improvement in the percentages of PI, BOP, PD, and CAL, which were statistically significant at 90 and 180 days (p < 0.0001). Importantly, NSPT significantly reduced the blood level of CRP (p < 0.02). However, no significant reduction in BP parameters was noted in the evaluated follow-up periods. NSPT, despite the benefits in periodontal clinical parameters, reduced the plasma level of CRP but not the BP in patients with combined RAH and periodontitis.

Abstract
There has been increasing interest in adjunctive use of anti-inflammatory drugs to control periodontitis. This study was performed to examine the effects of pirfenidone (PFD) on alveolar bone loss in ligature-induced periodontitis in mice and identify the relevant mechanisms. Experimental periodontitis was established by ligating the unilateral maxillary second molar for 7 days in mice (n = 8 per group), and PFD was administered daily via intraperitoneal injection. The micro-computed tomography and histology analyses were performed to determine changes in the alveolar bone following the PFD administration. For in vitro analysis, bone marrow macrophages (BMMs) were isolated from mice and cultured with PFD in the presence of RANKL or LPS. The effectiveness of PFD on osteoclastogenesis, inflammatory cytokine expression, and NF-κB activation was determined with RT-PCR, Western blot, and immunofluorescence analyses. PFD treatment significantly inhibited the ligature-induced alveolar bone loss, with decreases in TRAP-positive osteoclasts and expression of inflammatory cytokines in mice. In cultured BMM cells, PFD also inhibited RANKL-induced osteoclast differentiation and LPS-induced proinflammatory cytokine (IL-1β, IL-6, TNF-a) expression via suppressing the NF-κB signal pathway. These results suggest that PFD can suppress periodontitis progression by inhibiting osteoclastogenesis and inflammatory cytokine production via inhibiting the NF-κB signal pathway, and it may be a promising candidate for controlling periodontitis.

Prevalence, Severity of Extension, and Risk Factors of Gingivitis in a 3-Month Pregnant Population: A Multicenter Cross-Sectional Study. J Clin Med 2023; 12:jcm12093349. Abstract
The scope of this study was to assess the prevalence, severity of extension, and risk factors of gingivitis among pregnant women. In this cross-sectional study, 220 nulliparous women at 3 months of pregnancy were recruited in 2022 at the first obstetrical visit in Dakar, Senegal. Demographic characteristics, lifestyle habits, prenatal clinical status, and oral clinical parameters were recorded. Multivariable logistic regression modeling was used to assess relationships between gingivitis and risk factors. Eighty-eight percent of women had gingivitis, 15% were classified as moderate and 73% as severe. A total of 66.7% (95% CI [28.8-92.1]) of the sites had bleeding on interdental brushing. The odds for gingivitis decreased significantly for women consuming more than five portions of fruits and vegetables per day (OR = 0.15; 95% CI [0.03-0.66]) and increased in women who had a professional activity (OR = 6.75; 95% CI [1.27-35.87]) and high education. Concomitantly, the percentage of dental plaque (OR = 131.6; 95% CI [10.80-1619.71] and the severity of clinical attachment loss (OR = 7.70; 95% CI [3.16-18.92]) were important risk factors. Inverse associations were observed with increasing body mass index (OR = 0.76; 95% CI [0.63-0.93]). Our results underline that gingivitis cases and bleeding were particularly high among 3-month pregnant women. Literacy and adequate oral hygiene actions to modify behaviors and to achieve meticulous biofilm disorganization could make a favorable change in the gingival health outcome. Additionally, further research is necessary to precisely determine the role of biofilm-induced gingivitis and systemic-induced gingivitis in improving gingival conditions.

Abstract
Periodontitis is an inflammatory infection caused by bacterial plaque accumulation that affects the periodontal tissues. Current treatments lack bioactive signals to induce tissue repair and coordinated regeneration of the periodontium, thus alternative strategies are needed to improve clinical outcomes. Electrospun nanofibers present high porosity and surface area and are able to mimic the natural extracellular matrix, which modulates cell attachment, migration, proliferation, and differentiation. Recently, several electrospun nanofibrous membranes have been fabricated with antibacterial, anti-inflammatory, and osteogenic properties, showing promising results for periodontal regeneration. Thus, this review aims to provide an overview of the current state of the art of these nanofibrous scaffolds in periodontal regeneration strategies. First, we describe the periodontal tissues and periodontitis, as well as the currently available treatments. Next, periodontal tissue engineering (TE) strategies, as promising alternatives to the current treatments, are addressed. Electrospinning is briefly explained, the characteristics of electrospun nanofibrous scaffolds are highlighted, and a detailed overview of electrospun nanofibers applied to periodontal TE is provided. Finally, current limitations and possible future developments of electrospun nanofibrous scaffolds for periodontitis treatment are also discussed.

Abstract
Neutrophils are the predominant white blood cells (WBC) that are recruited to the sites of inflammation and infection. They are acknowledged to perform dual roles by promoting (pro-tumor) or by exhibiting anti-cancer properties (anti-tumor). Neutrophils are characterized based on the changes in phenotype and functional properties. To this context, circulating polymorphonuclear neutrophils (cPMN) and tumor-associated neutrophils (TANs) in cancer biology has been well explored but limited to oral polymorphonuclear neutrophils (oPMNs) in oral squamous cell carcinoma (OSCC). However, oPMNs are eminent in maintaining the healthy oral ecosystem by neutralizing microorganisms. Neutralization process enhances the expression of cell surface markers (CD11b, CD63, CD66, CD66b, CD66c, and CD66e) and inflammatory cytokines (TNF-α, IFN-γ, GM-CSF, and IL-8) and increases the recruitment of neutrophils. Along with the inflammation, it has been reported that CEACAM1 and chemerin also favors the infiltration of neutrophils to the cancer site. This indicates that oPMN might contribute to the aetiology of OSCC. The main objective of this review is to explore, the production and migration of oPMNs to the oral cavity, their phenotypes and possible role in OSCC.
