Cellulose Nanomaterials-Binding Properties and Applications: A Review

Controlled shrinkage of cellulose nanofibril films to enhance mechanical and barrier properties

Standalone cellulose nanofibril (CNF) films have a natural tendency to shrink upon drying from wet conditions due to capillary drying stresses. This shrinkage happens in both the radial direction, and the vertical direction. In this study, we prepared two types of CNF films- one in a restrained condition that did not allow shrinkage in the radial direction but enabled it in the vertical direction and another with 11 % radial shrinkage but limited vertical shrinkage. The radial shrinkage led to a more porous structure than the vertical shrinkage, which brought about poorer oxygen/moisture barrier performance. However, the density and oxygen permeability of the films converged to a similar value upon a simple thermocompression process. Radial shrinkage resulted in 140 % and 90 % higher strain at break and toughness in films with a significant sacrifice in strength and modulus. Scanning electron microscopy revealed that radial shrinkage formed wavy layers in the core structure leaving more free space, whereas vertical shrinkage formed flatter layers. Radial shrinkage is likely to produce a thicker individual layer in the core structure of CNF films than vertical shrinkage. The insight from this study will help tune the mechanical and barrier performance of CNF films and their composites.

A review of cellulose nanomaterial-stabilized Pickering foam: Formation, properties, and emerging oilfield applications

The rapid development of the petroleum industry has led to increasing demands for high-performance oilfield working fluids, such as drilling fluids, fracturing fluids, and fluids for enhanced oil recovery. Liquid foam is widely utilized as the oilfield working fluids due to its advantages, including low density, high mobility, superior cutting suspending ability, excellent fluid diversion capacity, and outstanding sweep efficiency. However, the short lifespan of foam limits its broad application in the oilfield. Considering the advantages of environmental protection, renewability, high specific surface area, tailorable surface chemistry, and excellent rheological properties of cellulose nanomaterials (CNMs), Pickering foams stabilized by CNMs offer improved eco-friendliness and foam stability. In this review, the classification and preparation methods of CNMs are briefly introduced. Subsequently, the preparation methods, properties, and application prospects of CNM-stabilized Pickering foams as oilfield working fluids are summarized. Finally, the challenges and prospects of CNM-stabilized Pickering foam are outlined, aiming to pave the way for the development of petroleum industry in an eco-friendlier manner.

Development of banana pseudo stem cellulose fiber based magnetic nanocomposite as an adsorbent for dye removal

A hybrid hydrogel nanocomposite derived from cellulose fiber extracted from Banana Pseudo Stem (BPS) was developed as an adsorbent material for wastewater treatment. The hydrogel was developed by graft copolymerization of N-hydroxyethylacrylamide on Cellulose Fiber (BPSCF-g-PHEAAm) with potassium peroxodisulphate (KPS) as an initiator and N, N'-methylene bisacrylamide (MBA) as a crosslinker using microwave irradiation. Magnetic nanoparticles generated by an in-situ method were incorporated into the network structure. Fourier Transform Infrared Spectroscopy (FTIR), Powder X-ray Diffraction (XRD), Thermogravimetric analysis (TGA), Vibrating Sample Magnetometer (VSM), Brunauer-Emmett-Teller analysis (BET), Field Emission Scanning Electron Microscopy (FESEM), and Energy Dispersive Spectrometer (EDS) were employed. The adsorption capacities of hydrogel and its nanocomposite were evaluated using Methylene Blue (MB) and Crystal Violet (CV) as model dyes. The parent gel exhibited the maximum absorption capacity of 235, and 219 mg g-1 towards MB and CV respectively which was enhanced to 320 and 303 mg g-1 for the nanocomposite. Adsorption data were best fitted with the pseudo-second-order kinetic model and the Freundlich isotherm model. Negative ΔG° and positive ΔH° indicated spontaneous and endothermic adsorption. Desorption was effective to an extent of 99 % in the HCl medium suggesting high reusability potential of the developed adsorbent material.

Emerging nanocellulose from agricultural waste: Recent advances in preparation and applications in biobased food packaging

With the increasing emphasis on sustainability and eco-friendliness, a novel biodegradable packaging materials has received unprecedented attention. Nanocellulose, owing to its high crystallinity, degradability, minimal toxicity, and outstanding biocompatibility, has gained considerable interest in the field of sustainable packaging. This review provided a comprehensive perspective about the recent advances and future development of cellulose nanocrystals (CNCs) and cellulose nanofibers (CNFs). We first introduced the utilization of agricultural waste for nanocellulose production, such as straw, bagasse, fruit byproducts, and shells. Next, we discussed the preparation process of nanocellulose from various agricultural wastes and expounded the advantages and shortcomings of different methods. Subsequently, this review offered an in-depth investigation on the application of nanocellulose in food packaging, especially the function and packaged form of nanocellulose on food preservation. Finally, the safety evaluation of nanocellulose in food packaging is conducted to enlighten and promote the perfection of relevant regulatory documents. In short, this review provided valuable insights for potential research on the biobased materials utilized in future food packaging.

Production of natural cellulose-based microfibres, from oil palm mesocarp fibres and pineapple leaf wastes, as porous supports for further applications

Natural cellulose-based microfibers were obtained through an economical and environmentally sustainable process called alkaline-peroxide purification, from the waste products of oil palm mesocarp fibres (OPMF) and pineapple leaves (PL), with the intention of creating porous, biodegradable, biocompatible, and non-toxic solid supports for use in future processes. The extracted microfibres were then taken through microscopic, spectroscopic and thermal characterisation to establish their cellulosic nature. The scanning electron microscopic (SEM) images of the bleached microfibres (B-OPMF and B-PLF) were cleaner, smoother and porous as compared with that of the unrefined fibres (Ur-OPMF and Ur-PLF). The bleached fibres (B-OPMF and B-PLF) exhibited peaks of C and O, which are indicative of pure cellulose, in the energy-dispersive X-ray spectroscopy (EDS) analysis. The FTIR spectral analysis of the extracted cellulose-based fibres (B-OPMF and B-PLF) exhibited peaks that were similar in composition to the reference cellulose (P-GB). For the thermogravimetric analysis (TGA) analysis, the maximum weight degradation in the reference cellulose (P-GB), occurred at 363.11 °C, in the bleached palm fibres (B-OPMF) at 334.55 °C and in the bleached pineapple leaf fibres (B-PLF) at 375.68 °C which, corresponds to cellulose decomposition. The differential scanning calorimetry (DSC) test verified the microfibers' thermally induced transitions. Therefore, these cellulose-based microfibres could be applied as functionalised microfibre supports for future applications.

Enzymatic approaches for diversifying bioproducts from cellulosic biomass

Cellulosic biomass is the most abundantly available natural carbon-based renewable resource on Earth. Its widespread availability, combined with rising awareness, evolving policies, and changing regulations supporting sustainable practices, has propelled its role as a crucial renewable feedstock to meet the escalating demand for eco-friendly and renewable materials, chemicals, and fuels. Initially, biorefinery models using cellulosic biomass had focused on single-product platform, primarily monomeric sugars for biofuel. However, since the launch of the first pioneering cellulosic plants in 2014, these models have undergone significant revisions to adapt their biomass upgrading strategy. These changes aim to diversify the bioproduct portfolio and improve the revenue streams of cellulosic biomass biorefineries. Within this area of research and development, enzyme-based technologies can play a significant role by contributing to eco-design in producing and creating innovative bioproducts. This Feature Article highlights our strategies and recent progress in utilizing the biological diversity and inherent selectivity of enzymes to develop and continuously optimize sustainable enzyme-based technologies with distinct application approaches. We have advanced technologies for standalone platforms, which produce various forms of cellulose nanomaterials engineered with customized and enhanced properties and high yields. Additionally, we have tailored technologies for integration within a biorefinery concept. This biorefinery approach prioritizes designing tailored processes to establish bionanomaterials, such as cellulose and lignin nanoparticles, and bioactive molecules as part of a new multi-bioproduct platform for cellulosic biomass biorefineries. These innovations expand the range of bioproducts that can be produced from cellulosic biomass, transcending the conventional focus on monomeric sugars for biofuel production to include biomaterials biorefinery. This shift thereby contributes to strengthening the Bioeconomy strategy and supporting the achievement of several Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) of the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development.

Amylum forms typical self-assembled amyloid fibrils

Amyloid fibril formation is a central biochemical process in pathology and physiology. Over decades, substantial advances were made in elucidating the mechanisms of amyloidogenesis, its links to disease, and the production of functional supramolecular structures. While the term "amyloid" denotes starch-like features of these assemblies, no evidence of amyloidogenic behavior of polysaccharides has been so far reported. Here, we investigate the potential of amylum (starch) not only to self-assemble into hierarchical fibrillar structures but also to exhibit canonical amyloidogenic properties. Ordered amylum structures were formed through a sigmoidal growth process with characteristic amyloid features including typical nanofibril morphology, binding to indicative dyes, inherent luminescence, apple-green birefringence upon Congo red staining, and notable mechanical rigidity. These findings shed light on polysaccharide self-assembly and expand the generic amyloid phenomenon.

Next-generation all-organic composites: A sustainable successor to organic-inorganic hybrid materials

This Review presents an overview of all-organic nanocomposites, a sustainable alternative to organic-inorganic hybrids. All-organic nanocomposites contain nanocellulose, nanochitin, and aramid nanofibers as highly rigid reinforcing fillers. They offer superior mechanical properties and lightweight characteristics suitable for diverse applications. The Review discusses various methods for preparing the organic nanofillers, including top-down and bottom-up approaches. It highlights in situ polymerization as the preferred method for incorporating these nanomaterials into polymer matrices to achieve homogeneous filler dispersion, a crucial factor for realizing desired performance. Furthermore, the Review explores several applications of all-organic nanocomposites in diverse fields including food packaging, performance-advantaged plastics, and electronic materials. Future research directions-developing sustainable production methods, expanding biomedical applications, and enhancing resistance against heat, chemicals, and radiation of all-organic nanocomposites to permit their use in extreme environments-are explored. This Review offers insights into the potential of all-organic nanocomposites to drive sustainable growth while meeting the demand for high-performance materials across various industries.

The impact of surface functionalization of cellulose following simulated digestion and gastrointestinal cell-based model exposure

Surface-functionalized cellulose materials are developed for various purposes, including food additives and food contact materials. A new biologically relevant testing strategy has been developed based on guidance from the European Food Safety Authority to demonstrate the safety of several next-generation surface-functionalized cellulose materials. This strategy involves a complex three-stage simulated digestion to compare the health effects of thirteen novel different types of cellulose. The physical and chemical properties of surface-functionalized fibrillated celluloses differed depending on the type, amount, and location of functional groups such as sulfonate, TEMPO-oxidized carboxy, and periodate-chlorite oxidized dicarboxylic acid celluloses. Despite exposure to gastrointestinal fluids, the celluloses maintained their physicochemical properties, such as negative surface charges and high length-to-width/thickness aspect ratios. An established intestinal co-culture model was used to measure cytotoxicity, barrier integrity, oxidative stress, and pro-inflammatory response to create a toxicological profile for these unique materials. We conclude that the C6 carboxylated cellulose nanofibrils by TEMPO-oxidation induced the most toxicity in the biological model used in this study and that the observed effects were most prominent at the 4-hour post-exposure time point.

Recent advances in nanomaterial-stabilized pickering foam: Mechanism, classification, properties, and applications

Pickering foam is a type of foam stabilized by solid particles known as Pickering stabilizers. These solid stabilizers adsorb at the liquid-gas interface, providing superior stability to the foam. Because of its high stability, controllability, versatility, and minimal environmental impact, nanomaterial-stabilized Pickering foam has opened up new possibilities and development prospects for foam applications. This review provides an overview of the current state of development of Pickering foam stabilized by a wide range of nanomaterials, including cellulose nanomaterials, chitin nanomaterials, silica nanoparticles, protein nanoparticles, clay mineral, carbon nanotubes, calcium carbonate nanoparticles, MXene, and graphene oxide nanosheets. Particularly, the preparation and surface modification methods of various nanoparticles, the fundamental properties of nanomaterial-stabilized Pickering foam, and the synergistic effects between nanoparticles and surfactants, functional polymers, and other additives are systematically introduced. In addition, the latest progress in the application of nanomaterial-stabilized Pickering foam in the oil industry, food industry, porous functional material, and foam flotation field is highlighted. Finally, the future prospects of nanomaterial-stabilized Pickering foam in different fields, along with directions for further research and development directions, are outlined.

Unlocking sustainable solutions: Nanocellulose innovations for enhancing the shelf life of fruits and vegetables - A comprehensive review

Regarding food security and waste reduction, preserving fruits and vegetables is a vital problem. This comprehensive study examines the innovative potential of coatings and packaging made of nanocellulose to extend the shelf life of perishable foods. The distinctive merits of nanocellulose, which is prepared from renewable sources, include exceptional gas barrier performance, moisture retention, and antibacterial activity. As a result of these merits, it is a good option for reducing food spoilage factors such as oxidation, desiccation, and microbiological contamination. Nanocellulose not only enhances food preservation but also complies with industry-wide environmental objectives. This review explores the many facets of nanocellulose technology, from its essential characteristics to its use in the preservation of fruits and vegetables. Furthermore, it deals with vital issues including scalability, cost-effectiveness, and regulatory constraints. While the use of nanocellulose in food preservation offers fascinating potential, it also wants to be cautiously careful to assure affordability, effectiveness, and safety. To fully use the potential of nanocellulose and advance the sustainability plan in the food business, collaboration between scientists, regulatory bodies, and industry stakeholders is important as we stand on the cusp of a revolutionary era in food preservation.

Mechanical properties and physicochemical characteristics of cotton fibers during combing process

This study employs a combination of experiments and molecular dynamics to analyze the mechanical properties and surface damage characteristics of cotton fibers during the combing process. Additionally, it investigates the alterations in physical and chemical properties at the atomic scale resulting from mechanical damage. Raw cotton (RC) is combed to 1st combed cotton (1st CC), 2nd combed cotton (2nd CC) and 3rd combed cotton (3rd CC). It was found that the mechanical properties and crystallinity showed an increasing and then decreasing trend with the process of combing, and the degree of surface tearing increased, and the binding energy of C and O shifted to a lower position. The breaking strength of cotton fibers first increased by 7.4 % and then decreased by 11 % and 7.7 % respectively, and the crystallinity was CrI (RC) = 70.8 %, CrI (1st CC) = 75.3 %, CrI (2nd CC) = 72.7 %, and CrI (3rd CC) = 71.8 % respectively. The C-O bond and the C-C bond at the amorphous regions are broken after combing lead to the cellulose chain to break, resulting in a decrease in the breaking strength of the fibers. The C-O bond as well as the C-O-C bond angles changes significantly during stretching, and the increase in ordering of the amorphous regions causes an increase in crystallinity.

Biotechnological innovations in nanocellulose production from waste biomass with a focus on pineapple waste

New materials' synthesis and utilization have shown many critical challenges in healthcare and other industrial sectors as most of these materials are directly or indirectly developed from fossil fuel resources. Environmental regulations and sustainability concepts have promoted the use of natural compounds with unique structures and properties that can be biodegradable, biocompatible, and eco-friendly. In this context, nanocellulose (NC) utility in different sectors and industries is reported due to their unique properties including biocompatibility and antimicrobial characteristics. The bacterial nanocellulose (BNC)-based materials have been synthesized by bacterial cells and extracted from plant waste materials including pineapple plant waste biomass. These materials have been utilized in the form of nanofibers and nanocrystals. These materials are found to have excellent surface properties, low density, and good transparency, and are rich in hydroxyl groups for their modifications to other useful products. These materials are well utilized in different sectors including biomedical or health care centres, nanocomposite materials, supercapacitors, and polymer matrix production. This review explores different approaches for NC production from pineapple waste residues using biotechnological interventions, approaches for their modification, and wider applications in different sectors. Recent technological developments in NC production by enzymatic treatment are critically discussed. The utilization of pineapple waste-derived NC from a bioeconomic perspective is summarized in the paper. The chemical composition and properties of nanocellulose extracted from pineapple waste may have unique characteristics compared to other sources. Pineapple waste for nanocellulose production aligns with the principles of sustainability, waste reduction, and innovation, making it a promising and novel approach in the field of nanocellulose materials.

Nanocellulose, the Green Biopolymer Trending in Pharmaceuticals: A Patent Review

The use of nanocellulose in pharmaceutics is a trend that has emerged in recent years. Its inherently good mechanical properties, compared to different materials, such as its high tensile strength, high elastic modulus and high porosity, as well as its renewability and biodegradability are driving nanocellulose's industrial use and innovations. In this sense, this study aims to conduct a search of patents from 2011 to 2023, involving applications of nanocellulose in pharmaceuticals. A patent search was carried out, employing three different patent databases: Patentscope from World Intellectual Property Organization (WIPO); Espacenet; and LENS.ORG. Patents were separated into two main groups, (i) nanocellulose (NC) comprising all its variations and (ii) bacterial nanocellulose (BNC), and classified into five major areas, according to their application. A total of 215 documents was retrieved, of which 179 were referred to the NC group and 36 to the BNC group. The NC group depicted 49.7%, 15.6%, 16.2%, 8.9% and 9.5% of patents as belonging to design and manufacturing, cell culture systems, drug delivery, wound healing and tissue engineering clusters, respectively. The BNC group classified 44.5% of patents as design and manufacturing and 30.6% as drug delivery, as well as 5.6% and 19.4% of patents as wound healing and tissue engineering, respectively. In conclusion, this work compiled and classified patents addressing exclusively the use of nanocellulose in pharmaceuticals, providing information on its current status and trending advancements, considering environmental responsibility and sustainability in materials and products development for a greener upcoming future.

Nanostructured Cellulose-Based Aerogels: Influence of Chemical/Mechanical Cascade Processes on Quality Index for Benchmarking Dye Pollutant Adsorbents in Wastewater Treatment

(1) Background: Nanostructured cellulose has emerged as an efficient bio-adsorbent aerogel material, offering biocompatibility and renewable sourcing advantages. This study focuses on isolating (ligno)cellulose nanofibers ((L)CNFs) from barley straw and producing aerogels to develop sustainable and highly efficient decontamination systems. (2) Methods: (Ligno)cellulose pulp has been isolated from barley straw through a pulping process, and was subsequently deconstructed into nanofibers employing various pre-treatment methods (TEMPO-mediated oxidation process or PFI beater mechanical treatment) followed by the high-pressure homogenization (HPH) process. (3) Results: The aerogels made by (L)CNFs, with a higher crystallinity degree, larger aspect ratio, lower shrinkage rate, and higher Young's modulus than cellulose aerogels, successfully adsorb and remove organic dye pollutants from wastewater. (L)CNF-based aerogels, with a quality index (determined using four characterization parameters) above 70%, exhibited outstanding contaminant removal capacity over 80%. The high specific surface area of nanocellulose isolated using the TEMPO oxidation process significantly enhanced the affinity and interactions between hydroxyl and carboxyl groups of nanofibers and cationic groups of contaminants. The efficacy in adsorbing cationic dyes in wastewater onto the aerogels was verified by the Langmuir adsorption isotherm model. (4) Conclusions: This study offers insights into designing and applying advanced (L)CNF-based aerogels as efficient wastewater decontamination and environmental remediation platforms.

Hemp cellulose nanocrystals for functional chitosan/polyvinyl alcohol-based films for food packaging applications

Hemp is known for its swift growth and remarkable sustainability, requiring significantly less water, an adaptable cultivation to a wide range of climates when compared to other fibers sources, making it a practical and environmentally friendly choice for packaging materials. The current research seeks to extract cellulose nanocrystals (CNCs) from hemp fibers using alkali treatment followed by acid hydrolysis and assess their reinforcing capacity in polyvinyl alcohol (PVA) and chitosan (CS) films. AFM analysis confirmed the existence of elongated, uniquely nanosized CNC fibers. The length of the isolated CNCs was approximately 277.76 ± 61 nm, diameter was 6.38 ± 1.27 nm and its aspect ratio was 44.69 ± 11.08. The FTIR and SEM analysis indicated the successful removal of non-cellulosic compounds. Furthermore, the study explored the impact of adding CNCs at varying weight percentages (0, 0.5, 1, 2.5, and 5 wt%) as a strengthening agent on the chemical composition, structure, tensile characteristics, transparency, and water solubility of the bionanocomposite films. Adding CNCs to the CS/PVA film, up to 5 wt%, resulted in an improvement in both the Young's modulus and tensile strength of the bionanocomposite film, which are measured at (412.46 ± 10.49 MPa) and (18.60 ± 3.42 MPa), respectively, in contrast to the control films with values of (202.32 ± 22.50 MPa) and (13.72 ± 2.61 MPa), respectively. The scanning electron microscopy (SEM) images reveal the creation of a CS/PVA/CNC film that appears smooth, with no signs of clumping or clustering. The blending and introduction of CNCs have yielded transparent and biodegradable CS/PVA films. This incorporation has led to a reduction in the gas transmission rate (from 7.013 to 4.159 cm3 (m2 day·0.1 MPa))-1, a decrease in transparency (from 90.23% to 82.47%), and a lowered water solubility (from 48% to 33%). This study is the inaugural effort to propose the utilization of hemp-derived CNC as a strengthening component in the development of mechanically robust and transparent CS/PVA-CNC bio-nanocomposite films, holding substantial potential for application in the field of food packaging.

In situ capping of silver nanoparticles with cellulosic matrices from wheat straws in enhancing their antimicrobial activity: Synthesis and characterization

Silver nanoparticles have gained worldwide attention in the scientific community due to their high antimicrobial activity. However, they tend to agglomerate and lose their shape and properties, thus capping agents necessary to protect their shapes, sizes, and properties. To enhance their antimicrobial activity, this research aimed to cap silver nanoparticles with cellulosic matrices from wheat straws. The wheat straw was delignified with 6% HNO3, and the residual was treated with 1% NaOH and NaClO: CH3COOH (1:1), then used to synthesize cellulose nanocrystals via acid hydrolysis. AgNPs were incorporated into the CPC and CNCs by in-situ synthesis using NaHB4 as the reducing agent. Fourier Transform Infrared, Scanning Electron Microscopy, and X-ray diffraction were used to investigate their features. The findings exhibited crystallinity increased with subsequent treatments, according to XRD analysis. Ultraviolet-visible, FTIR, TEM, and XRD analysis confirmed the capping of AgNPs onto the cellulosic materials. Antibacterial activity against Staphylococcus aureus and Escherichia coli, with CNCs-AgNPs composite, exhibited higher activity compared to CPC-AgNPs composite due to the increased surface area and excellent binding on the surface of the composite.

Polymeric Materials Obtained by Extrusion and Injection Molding from Lignocellulosic Agroindustrial Biomass

This review presents the advances in polymeric materials achieved by extrusion and injection molding from lignocellulosic agroindustrial biomass. Biomass, which is derived from agricultural and industrial waste, is a renewable and abundant feedstock that contains mainly cellulose, hemicellulose, and lignin. To improve the properties and functions of polymeric materials, cellulose is subjected to a variety of modifications. The most common modifications are surface modification, grafting, chemical procedures, and molecule chemical grafting. Injection molding and extrusion technologies are crucial in shaping and manufacturing polymer composites, with precise control over the process and material selection. Furthermore, injection molding involves four phases: plasticization, injection, cooling, and ejection, with a focus on energy efficiency. Fundamental aspects of an injection molding machine, such as the motor, hopper, heating units, nozzle, and clamping unit, are discussed. Extrusion technology, commonly used as a preliminary step to injection molding, presents challenges regarding fiber reinforcement and stress accumulation, while lignin-based polymeric materials are challenging due to their hydrophobicity. The diverse applications of these biodegradable materials include automotive industries, construction, food packaging, and various consumer goods. Polymeric materials are positioned to offer even bigger contributions to sustainable and eco-friendly solutions in the future, as research and development continues.

Current advances of nanocellulose application in biomedical field

Nanocellulose (NC) is a natural fiber that can be extracted in fibrils or crystals form from different natural sources, including plants, bacteria, and algae. In recent years, nanocellulose has emerged as a sustainable biomaterial for various medicinal applications including drug delivery systems, wound healing, tissue engineering, and antimicrobial treatment due to its biocompatibility, low cytotoxicity, and exceptional water holding capacity for cell immobilization. Many antimicrobial products can be produced due to the chemical functionality of nanocellulose, such disposable antibacterial smart masks for healthcare use. This article discusses comprehensively three types of nanocellulose: cellulose nanocrystals (CNC), cellulose nanofibrils (CNF), and bacterial nanocellulose (BNC) in view of their structural and functional properties, extraction methods, and the distinctive biomedical applications based on the recently published work. On top of that, the biosafety profile and the future perspectives of nanocellulose-based biomaterials have been further discussed in this review.

Rice straw-derived cellulose: a comparative study of various pre-treatment technologies and its conversion to nanofibres

Rice straw is a waste product generated after the harvesting of rice crops and is commonly disposed of by burning it off in open fields. This study explored the potential for the extraction and conversion of cellulose to cellulose nanofibres (CNFs) to be used as smart delivery systems for fertilizers applications. In this study, alkali, steam explosion, and organosolv treatments were investigated for cellulose extraction efficiency. The morphological characterization of cellulose showed smooth fibrillar structures. Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy represented significant removal of non-cellulosic components in treatments. The crystallinity increased from 52.2 to 65% in CNFs after fibrillation. Cellulose nanofibres (CNFs) had an average diameter of 37.4 nm and - 25.2 mV surface charges as determined by SEM and zeta potential, respectively, which have desired properties for holding fertilizers. Therefore, this study paves the way for value-added uses of rice straw as alternatives to current environmentally harmful practices.

Recent advances in bacterial cellulose-based antibacterial composites for infected wound therapy

Wound infection arising from pathogenic bacteria brought serious trouble to the patient and medical system. Among various wound dressings that are effective in killing pathogenic bacteria, antimicrobial composites based on bacterial cellulose (BC) are becoming the most popular materials due to their success in eliminating pathogenic bacteria, preventing wound infection, and promoting wound healing. However, as an extracellular natural polymer, BC is not inherently antimicrobial, which means that it must be combined with other antimicrobials to be effective against pathogens. BC has many advantages over other polymers, including nano-structure, significant moisture retention, non-adhesion to the wound surface, which has made it superior to other biopolymers. This review introduces the recent advances in BC-based composites for the treatment of wound infection, including the classification and preparation methods of composites, the mechanism of wound treatment, and commercial application. Moreover, their wound therapy applications include hydrogel dressing, surgical sutures, wound healing bandages, and patches are summarized in detail. Finally, the challenges and future prospects of BC-based antibacterial composites for the treatment of infected wounds are discussed.

Advances in the use of cellulose-based proton exchange membranes in fuel cell technology: A review

Fuel cells are electrochemical, ecologically friendly appliances that transform chemical energy into electricity in a clean, simple, and effective manner. With the advancement of technology in the field of computer science, electronic downsizing, and the ongoing need for mobility, the demand for portable energy sources such as fuel cells has considerably increased. The proton exchange membrane, which is designed to be a good conductor for protons while isolating electrons to move from the anode to the cathode, imprinting them an external circuit, and thus creating electricity, is at the heart of such an energy source. Perfluorosulfonic acid-based (NAFION) membranes, first introduced over 50 years ago, are still the state of the art in the field of fuel cell proton exchange membranes today. However, because of the numerous drawbacks connected with the usage of NAFION membranes, the scientific community has shifted its focus to producing new generation membranes based on natural materials, such as cellulose. Therefore, we believe that a review of the most recent studies on the use of cellulose as a material for proton exchange membranes in fuel cells may be very much appreciated by the scientific community.

Seaweed polysaccharide nanocomposite films: A review

A million tonnes of plastic produced each year are disposed of after single use. Biodegradable polymers have become a promising material as an alternative to petroleum-based polymers. Utilising biodegradable polymers will promote environmental sustainability which has emerged with potential features and performances for various applications in different sectors. Seaweed-derived polysaccharides-based composites have been the focus of numerous studies due to the composites' renewability and sustainability for industries (food packaging and medical fields like tissue engineering and drug delivery). Due to their biocompatibility, abundance, and gelling ability, seaweed derivatives such as alginate, carrageenan, and agar are commonly used for this purpose. Seaweed has distinct film-forming characteristics, but its mechanical and water vapour barrier qualities are weak. Thus, modifications are necessary to enhance the seaweed properties. This review article summarises and discusses the effect of incorporating seaweed films with different types of nanoparticles on their mechanical, thermal, and water barrier properties.

Lignocellulosic Bionanomaterials for Biosensor Applications

The rapid population growth, increasing global energy demand, climate change, and excessive use of fossil fuels have adversely affected environmental management and sustainability. Furthermore, the requirements for a safer ecology and environment have necessitated the use of renewable materials, thereby solving the problem of sustainability of resources. In this perspective, lignocellulosic biomass is an attractive natural resource because of its abundance, renewability, recyclability, and low cost. The ever-increasing developments in nanotechnology have opened up new vistas in sensor fabrication such as biosensor design for electronics, communication, automobile, optical products, packaging, textile, biomedical, and tissue engineering. Due to their outstanding properties such as biodegradability, biocompatibility, non-toxicity, improved electrical and thermal conductivity, high physical and mechanical properties, high surface area and catalytic activity, lignocellulosic bionanomaterials including nanocellulose and nanolignin emerge as very promising raw materials to be used in the development of high-impact biosensors. In this article, the use of lignocellulosic bionanomaterials in biosensor applications is reviewed and major challenges and opportunities are identified.

An introductory review on advanced multifunctional materials

This review summarizes the applications of some of the advanced materials. It included the synthesis of several nanoparticles such as metal oxide nanoparticles (e.g., Fe₃O₄, ZnO, ZrOSO₄, MoO_3-x, CuO, AgFeO₂, Co₃O₄, CeO₂, SiO₂, and CuFeO₂); metal hydroxide nanosheets (e.g., Zn₅(OH)₈(NO₃)₂·2H₂O, Zn(OH)(NO₃)·H₂O, and Zn₅(OH)₈(NO₃)₂); metallic nanoparticles (Ag, Au, Pd, and Pt); carbon-based nanomaterials (graphene, graphene oxide (GO), graphitic carbon nitride (g-C₃N₄), and carbon dots (CDs)); biopolymers (cellulose, nanocellulose, TEMPO-oxidized cellulose nanofibers (TOCNFs), and chitosan); organic polymers (e.g. covalent-organic frameworks (COFs)); and hybrid materials (e.g. metal-organic frameworks (MOFs)). Most of these materials were applied in several fields such as environmental-based technologies (e.g., water remediation, air purification, gas storage), energy (production of hydrogen, dimethyl ether, solar cells, and supercapacitors), and biomedical sectors (sensing, biosensing, cancer therapy, and drug delivery). They can be used as efficient adsorbents and catalysts to remove emerging contaminants e.g., inorganic (i.e., heavy metals) and organic (e.g., dyes, antibiotics, pesticides, and oils in water via adsorption. They can be also used as catalysts for catalytic degradation reactions such as redox reactions of pollutants. They can be used as filters for air purification by capturing carbon dioxide (CO₂) and volatile organic compounds (VOCs). They can be used for hydrogen production via water splitting, alcohol oxidation, and hydrolysis of NaBH₄. Nanomedicine for some of these materials was also included being an effective agent as an antibacterial, nanocarrier for drug delivery, and probe for biosensing.

Synergies between Fibrillated Nanocellulose and Hot-Pressing of Papers Obtained from High-Yield Pulp

To extend the application of cost-effective high-yield pulps in packaging, strength and barrier properties are improved by advanced-strength additives or by hot-pressing. The aim of this study is to assess the synergic effects between the two approaches by using nanocellulose as a bulk additive, and by hot-pressing technology. Due to the synergic effect, dry strength increases by 118% while individual improvements are 31% by nanocellulose and 92% by hot-pressing. This effect is higher for mechanical fibrillated cellulose. After hot-pressing, all papers retain more than 22% of their dry strength. Hot-pressing greatly increases the paper's ability to withstand compressive forces applied in short periods of time by 84%, with a further 30% increase due to the synergic effect of the fibrillated nanocellulose. Hot-pressing and the fibrillated cellulose greatly decrease air permeability (80% and 68%, respectively) for refining pretreated samples, due to the increased fiber flexibility, which increase up to 90% using the combined effect. The tear index increases with the addition of nanocellulose, but this effect is lost after hot-pressing. In general, fibrillation degree has a small effect which means that low- cost nanocellulose could be used in hot-pressed papers, providing products with a good strength and barrier capacity.

Sulfated endospermic nanocellulose crystals prevent the transmission of SARS-CoV-2 and HIV-1

Biomaterials with antimicrobial activity are gaining attention due to their biodegradability and efficacy in interacting with a wide range of microorganisms. A new cellulose nano-biomaterial, endospermic nanocellulose crystals (ENC) obtained from parenchymal tissue of ivory nut endosperm, has a natural capacity as a universal binder. This feature is enhanced when it is chemically functionalized, and can be exploited in the fight against microbes. We tested the ability of sulfated ENC in aqueous suspension to encapsulate viruses through a crosslinking reaction mediated by cations. 0.25% w/v ENC suspensions efficiently encapsulated spike (S) protein, preventing its interaction with ACE2 receptor. ENC was further able to encapsulate SARS-CoV-2 pseudoviruses and prevent infection of 293T-hsACE2 cells. ENC also suppressed infection of MT-4 cells with HIV-1LAI.04. This antiviral activity of sulfated ENC is due to the irreversible interaction of ENC with viral particles mediated by crosslinking, as antiviral activity was less effective in the absence of cations. Additionally, ENC was used as a matrix to immobilize recombinant ACE2 receptors and anti-S IgG, creating molecular lures that efficiently inhibited SARS-CoV-2 infections in vitro. These results show that sulfated ENC from ivory nuts can be used as an efficient antiviral material.

Progresses in lignin, cellulose, starch, chitosan, chitin, alginate, and gum/carbon nanotube (nano)composites for environmental applications: A review

Water sources are becoming increasingly scarce, and they are contaminated by industrial, residential, and agricultural waste-derived organic and inorganic contaminants. These contaminants may pollute the air, water, and soil in addition to invading the ecosystem. Because carbon nanotubes (CNTs) can undergo surface modification, they can combine with other substances to create nanocomposites (NCs), including biopolymers, metal nanoparticles, proteins, and metal oxides. Furthermore, biopolymers are significant classes of organic materials that are widely used for various applications. They have drawn attention due to their benefits such as environmental friendliness, availability, biocompatibility, safety, etc. As a result, the synthesis of a composite made of CNT and biopolymers can be very effective for a variety of applications, especially those involving the environment. In this review, we reported environmental applications (including removal of dyes, nitro compounds, hazardous materialsو toxic ions, etc.) of composites made of CNT and biopolymers such as lignin, cellulose, starch, chitosan, chitin, alginate, and gum. Also, the effect of different factors such as the medium pH, the pollutant concentration, temperature, and contact time on the adsorption capacity (AC) and the catalytic activity of the composite in the reduction or degradation of various pollutants has been systematically explained.

Understanding Nanocellulose-Water Interactions: Turning a Detriment into an Asset

Modern technology has enabled the isolation of nanocellulose from plant-based fibers, and the current trend focuses on utilizing nanocellulose in a broad range of sustainable materials applications. Water is generally seen as a detrimental component when in contact with nanocellulose-based materials, just like it is harmful for traditional cellulosic materials such as paper or cardboard. However, water is an integral component in plants, and many applications of nanocellulose already accept the presence of water or make use of it. This review gives a comprehensive account of nanocellulose-water interactions and their repercussions in all key areas of contemporary research: fundamental physical chemistry, chemical modification of nanocellulose, materials applications, and analytical methods to map the water interactions and the effect of water on a nanocellulose matrix.

Cationic cellulose nanocrystals as sustainable green material for multi biological applications via ξ potential

The present study aims to disclose the activity of cationic cellulose nanocrystals (CNCs) as a promising multifunctional green nanomaterial with applications in biological aspects. The basic reason behind multifunctional behavior is zeta potential and size distribution of nano biopolymers; exhibit a remarkable physical and biological activity compared to normal molecules.The preliminary characterized studied using absorption spectral analysis showed strong absorption peak indicating that spectrum curves can be screen by UV spectra at wavelength range 200-400nm. Ultrastructural studies (SEM-EDS and TEM), manifest that CNCs are elliptical particles in shape. Also, TEM show CNCs are the ideal illustration of zero-dimensional (0-D) NPs, less than 5.1 nm in diameter with Cationic charge and similar results in size distribution by TEM. Nonetheless, developed as antioxidant activity IC₅₀ was 1467 ± 25.9 µg/mL, antimicrobial activity tested G^-ve strains, but not affected on tested G^+ve strains and tested fungi. Evaluating toxicity effect of cationic CNCs against human blood erythrocytes (RBCs) and Lymphocyte Proliferation and the end point evaluate by comet assay, which proven no cytotoxic effect. Also, a high dose 500 µg/mL of CNCs highly significant (p < 0.05) reduction in cell viability of Caco-2 cancer cells after 24 h. incubation time, whereas the IC₅₀ was 1884 ± 19.46 µg/mL. Moreover, genotoxic assay indicates Caco-2 cells cause apoptosis with no fragmentation in DNA. Undoubtedly, the obtained results brought about by the interaction of layers carrying opposing charges. Additionally, there is a balance between hydrophilic contact and electrostatic attraction. That emphasizes how the cationic CNCs have excellent potential for use as antioxidants, antimicrobials, and anticancer agents.

Porphyrin Photosensitizers Grafted in Cellulose Supports: A Review

Cellulose is the most abundant natural biopolymer and owing to its compatibility with biological tissues, it is considered a versatile starting material for developing new and sustainable materials from renewable resources. With the advent of drug-resistance among pathogenic microorganisms, recent strategies have focused on the development of novel treatment options and alternative antimicrobial therapies, such as antimicrobial photodynamic therapy (aPDT). This approach encompasses the combination of photoactive dyes and harmless visible light, in the presence of dioxygen, to produce reactive oxygen species that can selectively kill microorganisms. Photosensitizers for aPDT can be adsorbed, entrapped, or linked to cellulose-like supports, providing an increase in the surface area, with improved mechanical strength, barrier, and antimicrobial properties, paving the way to new applications, such as wound disinfection, sterilization of medical materials and surfaces in different contexts (industrial, household and hospital), or prevention of microbial contamination in packaged food. This review will report the development of porphyrinic photosensitizers supported on cellulose/cellulose derivative materials to achieve effective photoinactivation. A brief overview of the efficiency of cellulose based photoactive dyes for cancer, using photodynamic therapy (PDT), will be also discussed. Particular attention will be devoted to the synthetic routes behind the preparation of the photosensitizer-cellulose functional materials.

Characterisation and modelling the mechanics of cellulose nanofibril added polyethersulfone ultrafiltration membranes

The performance of the membranes can be improved by adding the appropriate amount of nanomaterials to the polymeric membranes that can be used for water/wastewater treatment. In this study, the effects of polyvinylpyrrolidone (PVP), the impact of different amounts (0.5% and 1% wt.) of cellulose nanofibril (CNF), and the combined effects of PVP-CNF on the properties/performance of the polyethersulfone-based (PES-based) membrane are investigated. All PES-based ultrafiltration (UF) membranes are manufactured employing the phase inversion method and characterised via Fourier transform infrared (FTIR) spectroscopy, scanning electron microscopy (SEM), and the relevant techniques to determine the properties, including porosity, mean pore size, contact angle, water content, and pure water flux tests. Furthermore, the thermal properties of the prepared membranes are investigated using thermal gravimetric analysis (TGA) and differential thermal analysis (DTA) techniques. Experimental and numerical methods are applied for the mechanical characterisation of prepared membranes. For the experimental process, tensile tests under dry and wet conditions are conducted. The finite element (FE) method and Mori-Tanaka mean-field homogenisation are used as numerical methods to provide more detailed knowledge of membrane mechanics.

Cellulose Nano Crystals (CNC) as Additive for a Bio-Based Waterborne Acrylic Wood Coating: Decay, Artificial Weathering, Physical and Chemical Tests

Wood coatings prolong the service life of wood-based products, but they are usually of synthetic origin. The aim of the present article is to reduce the fossil-based compounds in a commercial waterborne acrylic coating by CNC addition and to test its performance. The coatings were applied on European beech and Norway spruce wood in order to test durability against Gloeophyllum trabeum (brown wood rot) and Trametes versicolor (white wood rot). Artificial weathering and blue stain, contact angle, physical tests (adhesion, impact and scratch test), chemical (FTIR) and morpho-anatomical analysis (SEM) were carried out. CNC addition increased viscosity, limiting the spreading of the coating into wood pores as visible after SEM observation, which reduced coating adhesion on the substrate. CNC improved fungal resistance as seen by a reduced mass loss and FTIR spectroscopy thanks to crosslinks formation, which reduced water sorption as well. Color change was not significant, and, on the other hand, glossiness was reduced but resulted as more homogeneous than control. CNC addition gave good results also in blue stain protection. CNC improved scratch resistance, but no visible change to impact was registered. CNC has promising results in coatings depending on wood and fungal species and presence of further commercial additives (biocides).

A critical review on nanomaterial based therapeutics for diabetic wound healing

Diabetes mellitus is a chronic endocrine disease that occurs mostly in the state of hyperglycemia (elevated blood glucose level). In the recent times, diabetes is listed under world's utmost critical health issues. Wound treatment procedures are complicated in diabetic individuals all over the world. Diabetic wound care not only involves high-cost, but also the primary cause of hospitalization, which can lead to amputation thereby reducing diabetic patient life expectancy. To lower the risk of amputation, wound healing requires the development of effective treatments. Traditional management systems for Diabetes are frequently chastised due to their high costs, difficulties in maintaining a sustainable supply chain and limited disposal alternatives. The worrisome rise in diabetes prevalence has sparked a surge of interest in the discovery of viable remedies to supplement existing treatments. Nanomaterials wound healing has a lot of potential for treating and preventing wound infections and it has recently gained popularity owing to its ability to transport drugs to the wound area in a regulated fashion, potentially overpowering the limits of traditional approaches. This research assessed several nanosystems, such as nanocarriers and nanotherapeutics, to explore how they can benefit in diabetic wound healing, with a focus on current obstacles and future prospects.

Evaluation of Transport Properties and Energy Conversion of Bacterial Cellulose Membrane Using Peusner Network Thermodynamics

We evaluated the transport properties of a bacterial cellulose (BC) membrane for aqueous ethanol solutions. Using the R^r version of the Kedem-Katchalsky-Peusner formalism (KKP) for the concentration polarization (CP) conditions of solutions, the osmotic and diffusion fluxes as well as the membrane transport parameters were determined, such as the hydraulic permeability (L_p), reflection (σ), and solute permeability (ω). We used these parameters and the Peusner (Rijr) coefficients resulting from the KKP equations to assess the transport properties of the membrane based on the calculated dependence of the concentration coefficients: the resistance, coupling, and energy conversion efficiency for aqueous ethanol solutions. The transport properties of the membrane depended on the hydrodynamic conditions of the osmotic diffusion transport. The resistance coefficients R11r, R22r, and Rdetr were positive and higher, and the R12r coefficient was negative and lower under CP conditions (higher in convective than nonconvective states). The energy conversion was evaluated and fluxes were calculated for the U-, F-, and S-energy. It was found that the energy conversion was greater and the S-energy and F-energy were lower under CP conditions. The convection effect was negative, which means that convection movements were directed vertically upwards. Understanding the membrane transport properties and mechanisms could help to develop and improve the membrane technologies and techniques used in medicine and in water and wastewater treatment processes.

Development of Lignin-Containing Cellulose Nanofibrils Coated Paper-Based Filters for Effective Oil-Water Separation

New methods of oil-water separation are needed as industrialization has increased the prevalence of oil-water mixtures on Earth. As an abundant and renewable resource with high oxygen and grease barrier properties, mechanically refined cellulose nanofibrils (CNFs) may have promising applications for oil-water separations. The unbleached form of these nanofibrils, lignin-containing CNFs (LCNFs), have also been found to display extraordinary barrier properties and are more environmentally friendly and cost-effective than CNFs. Herein, both wet and dry LCNF-modified filter papers have been developed by coating commercial filter paper with an LCNF suspension utilizing vacuum filtration. The LCNF-modified filters were tested for effectiveness in separating oil-water emulsions, and a positive relationship was discovered between a filter's LCNF coat weight and its oil collection capabilities. The filtration time was also analyzed for various coat weights, revealing a trend of high flux for low LCNF coat weights giving-way-to predictions of a coat weight upper limit. Additionally, it was found that wet filters tend to have higher flux values and oil separation efficiency values than dry filters of the same LCNF coat weight. Results confirm that the addition of LCNF to commercial filter papers has the potential to be used in oil-water separation.

Adhesive Interfaces toward a Zero-Waste Industry

This Feature Article evaluates ongoing efforts to adapt adhesives toward the goal of zero-waste living and suggests the most promising future directions. Adhesives are not always considered in zero-waste manufacturing because they represent only a small fraction of a product and offer no additional functionality. However, their presence restricts the reintegration of constituent parts into a circular economy, so a new generation of adhesives is required. Furthermore, their production often leads to harmful pollutants. Here, two main approaches toward addressing these problems are considered: first, the use of natural materials that replace petroleum-based polymers from which conventional adhesives are made and second, the production of dismantlable adhesives capable of debonding on demand with the application of an external stimulus. These approaches, either individually or combined, offer a new paradigm in zero-waste industrial production and consumer applications.

Nanocellulose/two dimensional nanomaterials composites for advanced supercapacitor electrodes

With the emerging of the problems of environmental pollution and energy crisis, the development of high-efficiency energy storage technology and green renewable energy is imminent. Supercapacitors have drawn great attention in wearable electronics because of their good performance and portability. Electrodes are the key to fabricate high-performance supercapacitors with good electrochemical properties and flexibility. As a biomass based derived material, nanocellulose has potential application prospects in supercapacitor electrode materials due to its biodegradability, high mechanical strength, strong chemical reactivity, and good mechanical flexibility. In this review, the research progress of nanocellulose/two dimensional nanomaterials composites is summarized for supercapacitors in recent years. First, nanocellulose/MXene composites for supercapacitors are reviewed. Then, nanocellulose/graphene composites for supercapacitors are comprehensively elaborated. Finally, we also introduce the current challenges and development potential of nanocellulose/two dimensional nanomaterials composites in supercapacitors.

Cellulose Nanocrystals-Incorporated Thermosensitive Hydrogel for Controlled Release, 3D Printing, and Breast Cancer Treatment Applications

In situ-gel-forming thermoresponsive copolymers have been widely exploited in controlled delivery applications because their critical gel temperature is similar to human body temperature. However, there are limitations to controlling the delivery of biologics from a hydrogel network because of the poor networking and reinforcement between the copolymer networks. This study developed an in situ-forming robust injectable and 3D printable hydrogel network based on cellulose nanocrystals (CNCs) incorporated amphiphilic copolymers, poly(ε-caprolactone-co-lactide)-b-poly(ethylene glycol)-b-poly(ε-caprolactone-co-lactide (PCLA). In addition, the physicochemical and mechanical properties of injectable hydrogels were controlled by physically incorporating CNCs with amphiphilic PCLA copolymers. CNCs played an unprecedented role in physically reinforcing the PCLA copolymers' micelle network via intermicellar bridges. Apart from that, the free-flowing closely packed rod-like CNCs incorporated PCLA micelle networks at low temperature transformed to a stable viscoelastic hydrogel network at physiological temperature. CNC incorporated PCLA copolymer sols effectively coordinated with hydrophobic doxorubicin and water-soluble lysozyme by a combination of hydrophobic and hydrogen bonding interaction and controlled the release of biologics. As shown by the 3D printing results, the biocompatible PCLA hydrogels continuously extruded during printing had good injectability and maintained high shape fidelity after printing without any secondary cross-linking steps. The interlayer bonding between the printed layers was high and formed stable 3D structures up to 10 layers. Subcutaneous injection of free-flowing CNC incorporated PCLA copolymer sols to BALB/c mice formed a hydrogel instantly and showed controlled biodegradation of the hydrogel depot without induction of toxicity at the implantation sites or surrounding tissues. At the same time, the in vivo antitumor effect on the MDA-MB-231 tumor xenograft model demonstrated that DOX-loaded hydrogel formulation significantly inhibited the tumor growth. In summary, the CNC incorporated biodegradable hydrogels developed in this study exhibit a prolonged release with special release kinetics for hydrophobic and hydrophilic biologics.

Exploiting Polymeric Films as a Multipurpose Drug Delivery System: a Review

Polymeric films are drug delivery systems that maintain contact with the delivery tissue and sustain a controlled release of therapeutic molecules. These systems allow a longer time of drug contact with the target site in the case of topical treatments and allow the controlled administration of drugs. They can be manufactured by various methods such as solvent casting, hot melt extrusion, electrospinning, and 3D bioprinting. Furthermore, they can employ various polymers, for example PVP, PVA, cellulose derivatives, chitosan, gelling gum, pectin, and alginate. Its versatility is also applicable to different routes of administration, as it can be administered to the skin, oral mucosa, vaginal canal, and eyeballs. All these factors allow numerous combinations to obtain a better treatment. This review focuses on exploring some possible ways to develop them and some particularities and advantages/disadvantages in each case. It also aims to show the versatility of these systems and the advantages and disadvantages in each case, as they bring the opportunity to develop different medicines to facilitate therapies for the most diverse purposes .

Progress, Challenge and Perspective of Fabricating Cellulose

Cellulose as the most abundant biopolymers on Earth, presents appealing performance in mechanical properties, thermal management, and versatile functionalization. The development of fabrication methods closely relates to enrich its functionality and reduce manufacture cost. However, cellulose is hard to be dissolved by most common solvents or melt due to its recalcitrant property. Herein, the recent progress of fabricating cellulose is summarized. First, the unique hierarchical structure of cellulose is fully investigated and the resulted processability is highlighted in directions of down to nanocellulose, dissolution, and thermoplastic processing. Then, the reported fabrication methods are summarized in three aspects: (1) self-assembly from nano/micro cellulose suspensions, especially the self-assembly of cellulose nanocrystals; (2) dissolution-regeneration-drying, covering spinning and solvent infusion processing; and (3) thermoplastic processing, focusing on analysis of the setup and the morphology changes of the prepared products. In each aspect, the flowchart of the fabrication process, the behind mechanism, fabricated products, and effects of processing parameters are explored. Finally, this review provides a perspective on the further direction of fabricating cellulose, especially the challenges toward mass production of cellulose. This article is protected by copyright. Cellulose-Based Nanomaterials Advance Biomedicine: A Review

There are various biomaterials, but none fulfills all requirements. Cellulose biopolymers have advanced biomedicine to satisfy high market demand and circumvent many ecological concerns. This review aims to present an overview of cellulose knowledge and technical biomedical applications such as antibacterial agents, antifouling, wound healing, drug delivery, tissue engineering, and bone regeneration. It includes an extensive bibliography of recent research findings from fundamental and applied investigations. Cellulose-based materials are tailorable to obtain suitable chemical, mechanical, and physical properties required for biomedical applications. The chemical structure of cellulose allows modifications and simple conjugation with several materials, including nanoparticles, without tedious efforts. They render the applications cheap, biocompatible, biodegradable, and easy to shape and process.

Sustainable Natural Bio-Origin Materials for Future Flexible Devices

Flexible devices serve as important intelligent interfaces in various applications involving health monitoring, biomedical therapies, and human-machine interfacing. To address the concern of electronic waste caused by the increasing usage of electronic devices based on synthetic polymers, bio-origin materials that possess environmental benignity as well as sustainability offer new opportunities for constructing flexible electronic devices with higher safety and environmental adaptivity. Herein, the bio-source and unique molecular structures of various types of natural bio-origin materials are briefly introduced. Their properties and processing technologies are systematically summarized. Then, the recent progress of these materials for constructing emerging intelligent flexible electronic devices including energy harvesters, energy storage devices, and sensors are introduced. Furthermore, the applications of these flexible electronic devices including biomedical implants, artificial e-skin, and environmental monitoring are summarized. Finally, future challenges and prospects for developing high-performance bio-origin material-based flexible devices are discussed. This review aims to provide a comprehensive and systematic summary of the latest advances in the natural bio-origin material-based flexible devices, which is expected to offer inspirations for exploitation of green flexible electronics, bridging the gap in future human-machine-environment interactions.

Recent advancement in isolation, processing, characterization and applications of emerging nanocellulose: A review

The emergence of nanocellulose from various natural resources as a promising nanomaterial has been gaining interest for a wide range application. Nanocellulose serves as an excellent candidate since it contributes numerous superior properties and functionalities. In this review, details of the three main nanocellulose categorised: cellulose nanocrystal (CNC), cellulose nanofibril (CNF), and bacterial nanocellulose (BNC) have been described. We focused on the preparation and isolation techniques to produce nanocellulose including alkaline pre-treatment, acid hydrolysis, TEMPO-mediated oxidation, and enzymatic hydrolysis. The surface modification of nanocellulose through esterification, silylation, amidation, phosphorylation, and carboxymethylation to improve the diverse applications has also been reviewed. Some invigorating perspectives on the applications, challenges, and future directions on the relevant issues regarding nanocellulose are also presented.

Genotoxicity of Three Micro/Nanocelluloses with Different Physicochemical Characteristics in MG-63 and V79 Cells

(1) Background: Nanocellulose is an innovative engineered nanomaterial with an enormous potential for use in a wide array of industrial and biomedical applications and with fast growing economic value. The expanding production of nanocellulose is leading to an increased human exposure, raising concerns about their potential health effects. This study was aimed at assessing the potential toxic and genotoxic effects of different nanocelluloses in two mammalian cell lines; (2) Methods: Two micro/nanocelluloses, produced with a TEMPO oxidation pre-treatment (CNFs) and an enzymatic pre-treatment (CMFs), and cellulose nanocrystals (CNCs) were tested in osteoblastic-like human cells (MG-63) and Chinese hamster lung fibroblasts (V79) using the MTT and clonogenic assays to analyse cytotoxicity, and the micronucleus assay to test genotoxicity; (3) Results: cytotoxicity was observed by the clonogenic assay in V79 cells, particularly for CNCs, but not by the MTT assay; CNF induced micronuclei in both cell lines and nucleoplasmic bridges in MG-63 cells; CMF and CNC induced micronuclei and nucleoplasmic bridges in MG-63 cells, but not in V79 cells; (4) Conclusions: All nanocelluloses revealed cytotoxicity and genotoxicity, although at different concentrations, that may be related to their physicochemical differences and availability for cell uptake, and to differences in the DNA damage response of the cell model.
