Abstract
BACKGROUND Oxidative stress has been implicated in the pathogenesis of hearing loss (HL). Dietary intake is a modifiable factor that could influence the oxidant and antioxidant capacity. We hypothesized that a higher composite dietary antioxidant index (CDAI) is associated with a reduced odds for HL. METHODS Adult participants from the 2001-2012 & 2015-2018 National Health and Nutrition Examination Study were included in this cross-sectional study. The CDAI was calculated from vitamins A, C, E, selenium, zinc, and caretenoid through 24-h dietary recall. Outcomes were HL, speech frequency HL (SFHL), and high frequency HL (HFHL). The associations between CDAI and HL, SFHL, and HFHL were evaluated by weighted multivariable logistic regression. RESULTS CDAI was associated with lower odds of HL (OR = 0.98, 95%CI 0.95-1.00, p = .043) and SFHL (OR = 0.97, 95%CI 0.95-1.00, p = .041), but not HFHL (OR = 0.98, 95%CI 0.96-1.00, p = .118) after adjustment for confounders. The multivariable-adjusted model showed a significant trend toward decreased risk of HL, SFHL, and HFHL with increasing CDAI quartile (all p for trend < 0.05). Restricted cubic spline analysis suggested that the associations between CDAI and HL, SFHL, and HFHL were L-shaped, with inflection points of CDAI at -0.61, 2.33, and 4.32, respectively. Subgroup analysis showed that participants with exposure to loud noise benefited from a higher CDAI for SFHL (p for interaction = 0.039). CONCLUSION Higher CDAI is associated with reduced odds of HL and SFHL in the U.S. adult population and serves as a promising intervention target to be further explored in prospective longitudinal studies in the future.

Abstract
The protein, Nuclear factor-E2-related factor 2 (Nrf2), is a transitory protein that acts as a transcription factor and is involved in the regulation of many cytoprotective genes linked to xenobiotic metabolism and antioxidant responses. Based on the existing clinical and experimental data, it can be inferred that neurodegenerative diseases are characterized by an excessive presence of markers of oxidative stress (OS) and a reduced presence of antioxidant defense systems in both the brain and peripheral tissues. The presence of imbalances in the homeostasis between oxidants and antioxidants has been recognized as a substantial factor in the pathogenesis of neurodegenerative disorders. The dysregulations include several cellular processes such as mitochondrial failure, protein misfolding, and neuroinflammation. These dysregulations all contribute to the disruption of proteostasis in neuronal cells, leading to their eventual mortality. A noteworthy component of Nrf2, as shown by recent research undertaken over the last decade, is to its role in the development of resistance to OS. Nrf2 plays a pivotal role in regulating systems that defend against OS. Extant research offers substantiation for the protective and defensive roles of Nrf2 in the context of neurodegenerative diseases. The purpose of this study is to provide a comprehensive analysis of the influence of Nrf2 on OS and its function in regulating antioxidant defense systems within the realm of neurodegenerative diseases. Furthermore, we evaluate the most recent academic inquiries and empirical evidence about the beneficial and potential role of certain Nrf2 activator compounds within the realm of therapeutic interventions.

Abstract
PURPOSE Age-related hearing loss is the most common form of permanent hearing loss that is associated with various health traits, including Alzheimer's disease, cognitive decline, and depression. The present study aims to identify genetic comorbidities of age-related hearing loss. Past genome-wide association studies identified multiple genomic loci involved in common adult-onset health traits. Polygenic risk scores (PRS) could summarize the polygenic inheritance and quantify the genetic susceptibility of complex traits independent of trait expression. The present study conducted a PRS-based association analysis of age-related hearing difficulty in the UK Biobank sample (N = 425,240), followed by a replication analysis using hearing thresholds (HTs) and distortion-product otoacoustic emissions (DPOAEs) in 242 young adults with self-reported normal hearing. We hypothesized that young adults with genetic comorbidities associated with age-related hearing difficulty would exhibit subclinical decline in HTs and DPOAEs in both ears. METHODS A total of 111,243 participants reported age-related hearing difficulty in the UK Biobank sample (> 40 years). The PRS models were derived from the polygenic risk score catalog to obtain 2627 PRS predictors across the health spectrum. HTs (0.25-16 kHz) and DPOAEs (1-16 kHz, L1/L2 = 65/55 dB SPL, F2/F1 = 1.22) were measured on 242 young adults. Saliva-derived DNA samples were subjected to low-pass whole genome sequencing, followed by genome-wide imputation and PRS calculation. The logistic regression analyses were performed to identify PRS predictors of age-related hearing difficulty in the UK Biobank cohort. The linear mixed model analyses were performed to identify PRS predictors of HTs and DPOAEs. RESULTS The PRS-based association analysis identified 977 PRS predictors across the health spectrum associated with age-related hearing difficulty. Hearing difficulty and hearing aid use PRS predictors revealed the strongest association with the age-related hearing difficulty phenotype. Youth with a higher genetic predisposition to hearing difficulty revealed a subclinical elevation in HTs and a decline in DPOAEs in both ears. PRS predictors associated with age-related hearing difficulty were enriched for mental health, lifestyle, metabolic, sleep, reproductive, digestive, respiratory, hematopoietic, and immune traits. Fifty PRS predictors belonging to various trait categories were replicated for HTs and DPOAEs in both ears. CONCLUSION The study identified genetic comorbidities associated with age-related hearing loss across the health spectrum. Youth with a high genetic predisposition to age-related hearing difficulty and other related complex traits could exhibit sub-clinical decline in HTs and DPOAEs decades before clinically meaningful age-related hearing loss is observed. We posit that effective communication of genetic risk, promoting a healthy lifestyle, and reducing exposure to environmental risk factors at younger ages could help prevent or delay the onset of age-related hearing difficulty at older ages.

Abstract
Diet can influence cognitive functioning in older adults and is a modifiable risk factor for cognitive decline. However, it is unknown if an association exists between diet and lower-level processes in the brain underpinning cognition, such as multisensory integration. We investigated whether temporal multisensory integration is associated with daily intake of fruit and vegetables (FV) or products high in fat/sugar/salt (FSS) in a large sample (N = 2,693) of older adults (mean age = 64.06 years, SD = 7.60; 56% female) from The Irish Longitudinal Study on Ageing (TILDA). Older adults completed a Food Frequency Questionnaire from which the total number of daily servings of FV and FSS items respectively was calculated. Older adults' susceptibility to the Sound Induced Flash Illusion (SIFI) measured the temporal precision of audio-visual integration, which included three audio-visual Stimulus Onset Asynchronies (SOAs): 70, 150 and 230 ms. Older adults who self-reported a higher daily consumption of FV were less susceptible to the SIFI at the longest versus shortest SOAs (i.e. increased temporal precision) compared to those reporting the lowest daily consumption (p = .013). In contrast, older adults reporting a higher daily consumption of FSS items were more susceptible to the SIFI at the longer versus shortest SOAs (i.e. reduced temporal precision) compared to those reporting the lowest daily consumption (p < .001). The temporal precision of multisensory integration is differentially associated with levels of daily consumption of FV versus products high in FSS, consistent with broader evidence that habitual diet is associated with brain health.

Abstract
Aging causes progressive degenerative changes in many organs, particularly the auditory system. Several attempts have been conducted to investigate preventive and therapeutic strategy/strategies for age-related auditory dysfunction, such as maintaining a healthy lifestyle through good nutrition, lower anxiety levels, and noise exposure, different pharmacological approaches, gene and cell therapy, and other strategies. However, it is not clear which approach is the best to slow down these dysfunctions because several different underlying mechanistic pathways are associated with presbycusis which eventually leads to different types of this disease. A combination of several methods is probably required, whereas the effectiveness for some people needs to be monitored. The effectiveness of treatments will not be the same for all; therefore, we may need to have a unique and personalized approach to the prevention and treatment of ARHL for each person. In addition, each method needs to specify what type of presbycusis can prevent or treat and provide complete information about the extent, duration of treatment, persistency of treatment, side effects, and whether the approach is for treatment or prevention or even both. This paper reviews the updated literature, which targets current interventions for age-related hearing loss.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Age-related hearing loss (ARHL) signifies the bilateral, symmetrical, sensorineural hearing loss that commonly occurs in elderly individuals. Several studies have suggested a higher risk of dementia among patients diagnosed with ARHL. Although the precise causal association between ARHL and cognitive decline remains unclear, ARHL has been recognized as one of the most significant factors that can be modified to reduce the risk of developing dementia potentially. Mild cognitive impairment (MCI) typically serves as the initial stage in the transition from normal cognitive function to dementia. Consequently, the objective of our randomized controlled trial (RCT) is to further investigate whether the use of hearing aids can enhance cognitive function in older adults diagnosed with ARHL and MCI. METHODS AND DESIGN This study is a parallel-arm, randomized controlled trial conducted at multiple centers in Shanghai, China. We aim to enlist a total of 688 older adults (age ≥ 60) diagnosed with moderate-to-severe ARHL and MCI from our four research centers. Participants will be assigned randomly to either the hearing aid fitting group or the health education group using block randomization with varying block sizes. Audiometry, cognitive function assessments, and other relevant data will be collected at baseline, as well as at 6, 12, and 24 months post-intervention by audiologists and trained researchers. The primary outcome of our study is the rate of progression to dementia among the two groups of participants. Additionally, various evaluations will be conducted to measure hearing improvement and changes in cognitive function. Apart from the final study results, we also plan to conduct an interim analysis using data from 12-month follow-up. DISCUSSION In recent years, there has been a notable lack of randomized controlled trials (RCTs) investigating the possible causal relationship between hearing fitting and the improvement of cognitive function. Our findings may demonstrate that hearing rehabilitation can be a valuable tool in managing ARHL and preventing cognitive decline, which will contribute to the development of a comprehensive framework for the prevention and control of cognitive decline. Abstract
BACKGROUND AND AIMS Non-alcoholic hepatic steatosis affects 25% of adults worldwide and its prevalence increases with age. There is currently no definitive treatment for NAFLD but international guidelines recommend a lifestyle-based approach, including a healthy diet. The aim of this study was to investigate the interactions between eating habits and the risk of steatosis and/or hepatic fibrosis, using a machine learning approach, in a non-institutionalized elderly population. METHODS AND RESULTS We recruited 1929 subjects, mean age 74 years, from the population-based Salus in Apulia Study. Dietary habits and the risk of steatosis and hepatic fibrosis were evaluated with a validated food frequency questionnaire, the Fatty Liver Index (FLI) and the FIB-4 score, respectively. Two dietary patterns associated with the risk of steatosis and hepatic fibrosis have been identified. They are both similar to a "western" diet, defined by a greater consumption of refined foods, with a rich content of sugars and saturated fats, and alcoholic and non-alcoholic calorie drinks. CONCLUSION This study further supports the concept of diet as a factor that significantly influences the development of the most widespread liver diseases. However, longitudinal studies are needed to better understand the causal effect of the consumption of particular foods on fat accumulation in the liver.

Abstract
BACKGROUND The assessment of oral health-related quality of life (OHRQoL) evaluated the impact of an individual's oral health on the patient's physical and psychosocial status. We evaluated the association between subjective OHRQoL, measured with the Oral Health Impact Profile-14 (OHIP-14) questionnaire, and unfavorable body mass index (BMI) (i.e., too high or too low) in a large population-based study on older adults from Southern Italy. Moreover, we assessed which of the seven OHIP-14 domains was the most strongly associated with an unfavorable BMI. METHODS We used data on a subpopulation of the Salus in Apulia Study, including 216 older adults. BMI < 18.4 kg/m2 and >30 kg/m2 were classified as unfavorable, while values between 18.5 and 30 kg/m2 were classified as ideal. RESULTS A higher OHIP-14 total score increased the risk of an unfavorable BMI (odds ratio (OR): 1.08, 95% confidence interval (CI): 1.01-1.15). In the model adjusted for age, sex, education, hypertension, carbohydrate consumption, and alcohol consumption, this finding was confirmed with a higher OHIP-14 total score increasing the risk of an unfavorable BMI (OR: 1.10, 95% CI: 1.01-1.22), and higher age linked to a decreased risk of an unfavorable BMI (OR: 0.89, 95% CI: 0.82-0.97). In a random forest regression model, the most important predictive domains/sub-scales of OHIP-14 in the mean decrease in the Gini coefficient for unfavorable BMI were, in order of decreasing importance, physical pain, functional limitation, psychological discomfort, physical disability, social disability, psychological disability, and handicap. CONCLUSIONS In older age, negative OHRQoL, particularly linked to the physical pain domain, increased the risk of being underweight or overweight and obesity.

Abstract
Frailty is a multidisciplinary public health issue and nutrition is key concern. Given the scientific consistency about inflammation as shared pathway to poor nutrition and frailty, food processing seems a suitable target to gain evidence in frailty prevention nutrition settings. This study aimed to assess diet in relation to nutritional frailty using the NOVA classification. Browsing the dataset of the Salus in Apulia, 2185 older adults were found to have completed the nutritional assessment, providing eligible data for this study goal. A validated construct, based on the co-presence of physical frailty by CHS criteria plus nutritional imbalance, was applied to characterize nutritional frailty phenotypes. Using the NOVA classification, daily food and beverage intakes from an 85-item self-administered FFQ were assigned to three categories, and effect sizes were tested among groups according to nutritional frailty status (presence/absence). Raw and adjusted logistic regression models were run to assess associations between NOVA food categories by quintiles of daily exposure (very-low, low, mild, moderate, high) and nutritional frailty. Nutritional frailty prevalence was 27%, being more frequent in males. Eating more unprocessed or minimally processed foods was inversely related to nutritional frailty, even after adjustment (OR: 0.10, 95%CI 0.07-0.16), showing a downward ORs behavior toward lower consumption quintiles. Listing in the quintile of moderate consumption of processed foods meant a nearly 50% increase in nutritional frailty probability (OR: 1.46, 95%CI 1.03-2.06), while the probability was double for the highest quintile against the lowest (OR: 3.22, 95%CI 2.27-4.58). A growing probability of nutritional frailty was found for increasing consumption of ultra-processed foods, but significance was lacking. The contribution of food processing to poor nutrition needs to be considered when promoting a better understanding of effective nutritional screening in aging. Therefore, food processing should be accounted for when composing diet guidelines for the older population within the framework of multidisciplinary efforts to ease the frailty healthcare burden.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Few related studies reported yet the association between vitamins and the onset of sudden sensorineural hearing loss (SSNHL). OBJECTIVE To explore the relationship between the serum levels of fat-soluble vitamins A, D, and E and the risk of SSNHL. METHODS This retrospective analysis included 310 SSNHL patients and 154 people without risk of hearing loss. The demographic information of all participants like age, gender, body mass index, occupation, cigarette smoking or drinking status, etc. were recorded. The serum levels of vitamins A, D, and E were determined using the electrochemical method. RESULTS The results indicated that serum vitamin D levels in SSNHL patients were significantly lower. Vitamin D deficiency was only observed in SSNHL group. Similarly, serum vitamin A levels in female SSNHL patients were significantly lower than the control group. Meanwhile, serum vitamin E levels in male SSNHL patients were significantly lower than the control group. CONCLUSION AND SIGNIFICANCE Our results revealed that the serum levels of fat-soluble vitamins A, D, and E in SSNHL patients were lower than those in the control group with normal hearing, indicating that the decrease of serum fat-soluble vitamins may be related to SSNHL pathogenesis.

Abstract
OBJECTIVES This study aimed to determine whether food intake modifies the risk of developing hearing impairment (HI) in Japanese adults in their 40s. METHODS Data for individuals who were in their 40s with no HI at baseline and had participated in the survey multiple times were extracted from the National Institute for Longevity Sciences, Longitudinal Study of Aging. A total of 1846 samples observed for up to 11.5 years in 421 participants were included in the analyses. The average 3-day food intake was calculated. HI is defined as a pure-tone average of the better ear at frequencies of 0.5, 1, 2, and 4 kHz greater than 25 dB. The risk of developing HI in the 18 food groups was calculated longitudinally using multivariable cumulative data analyses. RESULTS Even after adjusting basic confounding factors, food groups, and baseline hearing level, significant associations were found between beverage consumption and risk increments for HI (odds ratio [OR] = 2.374, 95% confidence interval [CI]:1.141-4.940) and also between mushroom intake and risk reduction (OR = 0.215, 95% CI:0.069-0.667). Other foods did not consistently show significant results when the combination of analysis variables were changed. CONCLUSIONS Although the effect of food on hearing is modest to the extent that the significance varies with the variables used in the analysis, the intake of beverages and mushrooms could potentially modify the risk of developing HI after middle age.

Abstract
Growing evidence suggests that inflammation contributes to brain aging and neurodegeneration. This study investigates the relationship between global cognitive as well executive function and the inflammatory markers IL-6, CRP, and TNF-α in a population-based study of older adults. A population-based sample, of older people in Southern Italy, was enrolled. We measured serum levels of IL-6, CRP, and TNF-α. We also administered two neuropsychological tests: Mini-Mental State Examination and Frontal Assessment Battery. Rank-based regression models were performed to investigate the relationship between inflammatory markers and cognitive functions, including major demographic and clinical confounders for adjustment. The sample consisted of 1929 subjects aged between 65 and 95 years. Multivariate linear regression analysis revealed that higher serum levels of IL-6 were associated with lower MMSE and FAB scores even after adjustment for demographic data and cardiovascular risk factors. No significant associations were found between cognitive functioning and serum levels of CRP and TNF-α. Our results suggest that higher levels of IL-6 were associated with cognitive impairment in an older adult population of Southern Italy.

Abstract
Melatonin supplementation has been shown to delay age-related hearing loss (ARHL) progression. Previously, melatonin was found to inhibit neuronal mitochondrial DNA (mtDNA) release, as well as inhibit cyclic GMP-AMP synthase (cGAS)-stimulator of interferon genes (STING) signaling, thereby delaying the onset of central nervous system diseases. Therefore, we hypothesized that melatonin may delay the progression of hearing loss in the C57BL/6J presbycusis mouse model by inhibiting cGAS-STING signaling in the auditory pathway. Oral melatonin at 10 mg/kg/d was administered to 3-month-old C57BL/6J mice until 12 months of age. The auditory brainstem response (ABR) threshold was used to assess their hearing ability. By real-time polymerase chain reaction and Western blot analysis, the levels of cytosolic mtDNA, cGAS/STING, and cytokines were examined in the mouse cochlea, inferior colliculus, and auditory cortex. We found that the 12-month-old control mice exhibited significant hearing loss, increased cytosolic mtDNA, increased expression of inflammatory factors TNF-α, IL-6, IFN-β, Cxcl10, and Ifit3, up-regulated cGAS and STING expression, and enhanced interferon regulatory factor 3 (IRF3) phosphorylation in the C57BL/6J mouse cochlea, inferior colliculus, and auditory cortex. Melatonin treatment significantly improved hearing, decreased cytosolic mtDNA, suppressed the expression of inflammatory cytokines TNF-α, IL-6, IFN-β, Ifit3, and Cxcl10, down-regulated cGAS and STING expression, and attenuated IRF3 phosphorylation in the C57BL/6J mouse cochlea, inferior colliculus, and auditory cortex. This study suggested that melatonin had a protective effect on auditory function in the C57BL/6J presbycusis mouse model, which may be mediated through reducing mtDNA release, inhibiting the cGAS-STING signaling pathway in the auditory pathway.

Abstract
BACKGROUND The world's age-related health concerns continue to rise. Audio-vestibular disorders, such as hearing loss, tinnitus, and vertigo, are common complaints in the elderly and are associated with social and public health burdens. Various preventative measures can ease their impact, including healthy food consumption, nutritional supplementation, and lifestyle modification. We aim to provide a comprehensive summary of current possible strategies for preventing the age-related audio-vestibular dysfunction. METHODS A PubMed, Embase, and Cochrane review databases search was conducted to identify the relationship between diet, lifestyle, and audio-vestibular dysfunction. "Diet", "nutritional supplement", "lifestyle", "exercise", "physical activity", "tinnitus", "vertigo" and "age-related hearing loss" were used as keywords. RESULTS Audio-vestibular dysfunction develops and progresses as a result of age-related inflammation and oxidative stress. Diets with anti-inflammatory and antioxidant effects have been proposed to alleviate this illness. A high-fat diet may induce oxidative stress and low protein intake is associated with hearing discomfort in the elderly. Increased carbohydrate and sugar intake positively correlate with the incidence of audio-vestibular dysfunction, whereas a Mediterranean-style diet can protect against the disease. Antioxidants in the form of vitamins A, C, and E; physical activity; good sleep quality; smoking cessation; moderate alcohol consumption; and avoiding noise exposure are also beneficial. CONCLUSIONS Adequate diet or nutritional interventions with lifestyle modification may protect against developing audio-vestibular dysfunction in elderly individuals.

Abstract
This article provides a theoretical overview of the association between age-related hearing loss (ARHL), immune system ageing (immunosenescence), and chronic inflammation. ARHL, or presbyacusis, is the most common sensory disability that significantly reduces the quality of life and has a high economic impact. This disorder is linked to genetic risk factors but is also influenced by a lifelong cumulative effect of environmental stressors, such as noise, otological diseases, or ototoxic drugs. Age-related hearing loss and other age-related disorders share common mechanisms which often converge on low-grade chronic inflammation known as “inflammaging”. Various stimuli can sustain inflammaging, including pathogens, cell debris, nutrients, and gut microbiota. As a result of ageing, the immune system can become defective, leading to the accumulation of unresolved inflammatory processes in the body. Gut microbiota plays a central role in inflammaging because it can release inflammatory mediators and crosstalk with other organ systems. A proinflammatory gut environment associated with ageing could result in a leaky gut and the translocation of bacterial metabolites and inflammatory mediators to distant organs via the systemic circulation. Here, we postulate that inflammaging, as a result of immunosenescence and gut dysbiosis, accelerates age-related cochlear degeneration, contributing to the development of ARHL. Age-dependent gut dysbiosis was included as a hypothetical link that should receive more attention in future studies.

Abstract
Background: This study aims to establish the key clinical features of different motoric cognitive risk (MCR) subtypes based on individual quantitative measures of cognitive impairment and to compare their predictive power on survival over an 8-year observation time. Methods: We analyzed data from a population-based study of 1138 subjects aged 65 years and older in south Italy. These individuals were targeted and allocated to subtypes of the MCR phenotype according to the slowness criterion plus one other different cognitive domain for each characterized phenotype (Subjective Cognitive Complaint [SCC]; Global Function [Mini Mental State Examination (MMSE) < 24]; or a combination of both). Clinical evaluation and laboratory assays, along with a comprehensive battery of neuropsychological and physical tests, completed the sample investigation. Results: MCR prevalence was found to be 9.8% (n = 112), 3.6% (n = 41), 3.4% (n = 39) and 1.8% (n = 21) for the MCR, MCR-GlobalFunction, MCR-StructuredSCC and MCR-SCC and GlobalFunction, respectively. Univariate Cox survival analysis showed an association only of the MCR-GlobalFunction subtype with an almost three-fold increased risk of overall death as compared to the other counterparts (HR 2.53, 95%CI 1.28 to 4.99) over an 8-year observation period. Using Generalized Estimating Equations (GEE) for clustered survival data, we found that MCR males had an increased and significant mortality risk with respect to MCR female subjects. Conclusions: MCR phenotypes assigned to the MMSE cognitive domain are more likely to have an increased risk of overall mortality, and gender showed a huge effect on the risk of death for MCR subjects over the 8-year observation.

Abstract
PURPOSE The purpose of this study was to determine the prevalence of self-reported hearing loss and associated risk factors in a representative population-based study of Wisconsin residents. METHOD Survey of the Health of Wisconsin participants with data on self-reported hearing loss were included. We reported prevalence of self-reported hearing loss with corresponding 95% confidence intervals (CIs), overall, and stratified by age and sex. Age- and sex-adjusted and multivariable logistic regression models were used to evaluate determinants of self-reported hearing loss, and results are presented as odds ratios with corresponding 95% CIs. RESULTS There were 2,767 participants (50.7% men) with a mean age of 46 years (range: 21-74) in this study. Prevalence of self-reported hearing loss was 26.8% (24.4, 28.4) and was higher in men (30.3% [27.1, 33.4]) than in women (22.5% [19.9, 25.0]). Prevalence increased with age. After multivariable adjustment, age (per +1 year increase; 1.05 [1.04, 1.06]), male sex (1.57 [1.18, 2.08]), having two chronic diseases (vs. 0; 1.93 [1.16, 3.23]), occupational (2.47 [1.91, 3.19]) and recreational (1.58 [1.22, 2.04]) noise exposure, and poor diet (1.88 [1.28, 2.78]) were associated with higher odds of self-reported hearing loss. CONCLUSIONS Hearing loss is a highly prevalent public health concern and may be at least partially modifiable via interventions to reduce noise exposure and promote health. Abstract
Background Diet and social determinants influence the state of human health. In older adults, the presence of social, physical and psychological barriers increases the probability of deprivation. This study investigated the relationship between social deprivation and eating habits in non-institutionalized older adults from Southern Italy, and identified foods and dietary habits associated with social deprivation. Methods We recruited 1,002 subjects, mean age 74 years, from the large population based Salus in Apulia Study. In this cross-sectional study, eating habits and the level of deprivation were assessed with FFQ and DiPCare-Q, respectively. Results Deprived subjects (n = 441) included slightly more females, who were slightly older and with a lower level of education. They consumed less fish (23 vs. 26 g), fruiting vegetables (87 vs. 102 g), nuts (6 vs. 9 g) and less “ready to eat” dishes (29 vs. 33 g). A Random Forest (RF) model was used to identify a dietary pattern associated with social deprivation. This pattern included an increased consumption of low-fat dairy products and white meat, and a decreased consumption of wine, leafy vegetables, seafood/shellfish, processed meat, red meat, dairy products, and eggs. Conclusion The present study showed that social factors also define diet and eating habits. Subjects with higher levels of deprivation consume cheaper and more readily available food.

Abstract
Dietary behaviour is a core element in diabetes self-management. There are no remarkable differences between nutritional guidelines for people with type 2 diabetes and healthy eating recommendations for the general public. This study aimed to evaluate dietary differences between subjects with and without diabetes and to describe any emerging dietary patterns characterizing diabetic subjects. In this cross-sectional study conducted on older adults from Southern Italy, eating habits in the “Diabetic” and “Not Diabetic” groups were assessed with FFQ, and dietary patterns were derived using an unsupervised learning algorithm: principal component analysis. Diabetic subjects (n = 187) were more likely to be male, slightly older, and with a slightly lower level of education than subjects without diabetes. The diet of diabetic subjects reflected a high-frequency intake of dairy products, eggs, vegetables and greens, fresh fruit and nuts, and olive oil. On the other hand, the consumption of sweets and sugary foods was reduced compared to non-diabetics (23.74 ± 35.81 vs. 16.52 ± 22.87; 11.08 ± 21.85 vs. 7.22 ± 15.96). The subjects without diabetes had a higher consumption of red meat, processed meat, ready-to-eat dishes, alcoholic drinks, and lower vegetable consumption. The present study demonstrated that, in areas around the Mediterranean Sea, older subjects with diabetes had a healthier diet than their non-diabetic counterparts.

Abstract
Introduction It has been proposed that hearing loss may result in improved visuospatial abilities. The evidence for this assertion is inconsistent, and limited to studies in congenitally deaf children, despite older adults with age-related hearing loss constituting the vast majority of the hearing impaired population. We assessed visuospatial (visuoconstruction and visuospatial memory) ability in older adult hearing aid users with and without clinically significant cognitive impairment. The primary aim of the study was to determine the effect of hearing loss on visuospatial abilities. Method Seventy-five adult hearing aid users (HA) aged over 65 were recruited, out of whom 30 had normal cognition (NC-HA), 30 had mild cognitive impairment (MCI-HA), and 15 had dementia (D-HA). The Rey Osterrieth Complex figure test (ROCFT) copy, 3 min recall and 30 min recall tests were performed to evaluate the visuoconstructional and visuospatial memory abilities of the participants. Results There were significant differences between the ROCFT copy, 3 min recall, and 30 min recall among the three cohorts (p < 0.005). Compared with previously published normative data, the NC-HA performed significantly better in the ROCFT copy (p < 0.001), immediate recall (p < 0.001), and delay recall (p = 0.001), while the MCI-HA performed similarly to the expected norms derived from population (p = 0.426, p = 0.611, p = 0.697, respectively), and the D-HA performed below this norm. Conclusion Though visuospatial abilities tend to decline when the global cognitive functioning declines, we found suggestive evidence for positive effects of age-related hearing loss on visuospatial cognitive ability. Participants with mild cognitive impairment and hearing loss, who would have been expected to perform worse than normative data, were in fact performing as well as cognitively healthy subjects without hearing loss. Visuospatial ability could be targeted when providing rehabilitation for the older adults with hearing loss.

Abstract
BACKGROUND the possible relationship between dietary habits and the incidence of late-onset depression (LOD), defined as first depression onset at later age, is unclear. OBJECTIVE to investigate the relationship between consumption of different food groups and incident LOD. DESIGN longitudinal population-based study with a 12-year follow-up. SETTING Castellana Grotte, Bari, Italy. SUBJECTS five hundred and forty-six older subjects from the Salus in Apulia Study. METHODS baseline data were recorded in 2003-06, and diagnostic data were recorded in 2013-18 at follow-up. Dietary intake was assessed with a food frequency questionnaire. Depressive disorders were assessed with the Structured Clinical Interview for DSM-IV Axis I Disorders. Subjects who already suffered from depression or other psychiatric disorders at baseline were excluded from the analysis. The association between LOD and single dietary determinants was examined by Cox regression analysis and then applying the hazard ratio (HR). RESULTS subjects with incident LOD (n = 34) had lower global cognition and total cholesterol levels and a higher body mass index (BMI) at baseline. Only processed meat significantly increased the risk of incident LOD of about 10% by 5 g/day intake (HR adjusted for age, sex, education, multimorbidity and BMI: 1.13, 95% confidence intervals: 1.04-1.22). A similar relationship was found for single foods in the processed meat food group such as sausages, salami and mortadella and baked ham, but not for raw ham. CONCLUSIONS in midlife, a higher intake of processed meat was not only associated with an increased risk of cardiovascular- and metabolic-related chronic diseases in older age but also with an increased risk of developing LOD.

Abstract
In this study, we explored the time and space relationship according to two different spatial codings, namely, the left/right extension and the reachability of stimulus along a near/far dimension. Four experiments were carried out in which healthy participants performed the time and spatial bisection tasks in near/far space, before and after short or long tool-use training. Stimuli were prebisected horizontal lines of different temporal durations in which the midpoint was manipulated according to the Muller-Lyer illusion. The perceptual illusory effects emerged in spatial but not temporal judgments. We revealed that temporal and spatial representations dynamically change according to the action potentialities of an individual: temporal duration was perceived as shorter and the perceived line’s midpoint was shifted to the left in far than in near space. Crucially, this dissociation disappeared following a long but not short tool-use training. Finally, we observed age-related differences in spatial attention which may be crucial in building the memory temporal standard to categorize durations.

Abstract
Purpose The purpose of this study was to examine the relationship between dietary inflammatory index and objective hearing loss (HL). Materials and Methods A cross-sectional analysis of a nationally representative sample of participants was performed based on data in National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey (NHANES) (2009-2016). HL was defined as pure tone averages >25 dB at 500, 1000, and 2000 Hz (low frequency); 3000, 4000, 6000, and 8000 Hz (high frequency) in either ear. The energy-adjusted dietary inflammatory index (E-DII) score was calculated for each participant based on two 24-h dietary recalls to assess diet-associated inflammation. Multivariable logistic regression was used to examine the linear relationship between HL and E-DII score or E-DII quartiles. Restricted cubic spline was applied to identify any non-linear associations of the E-DII score with hearing loss. Subgroup analyses were performed by age and gender to explore the moderating roles of these factors. Akaike's Information Criterion (AIC) values were used to select the better-fitted model among linear and non-linear models. Results An inverted-U shaped relationship with low-frequency hearing loss (LFHL) was identified for the E-DII score (P-nonlinear =0.023) after adjustment for potential confounders. But significant linear or nonlinear association between E-DII score and high-frequency hearing loss (HFHL) was not found. Conclusion E-DII score had inverted-U relationship with LFHL. Both pro-inflammatory diet and anti-inflammatory diet seemed to be associated with a decreased risk of LFHL compared to diet that was neither pro-inflammatory diet nor anti-inflammatory diet.

Abstract
The global distribution and temporal trend of age-related hearing loss (ARHL) are unknown, and we aimed to investigate magnitudes and temporal trends of ARHL burden and its influencing factors at the national, regional, and global levels. Based on the information of Global Burden of Disease Study 2019, we calculated the estimated annual percentage change to quantify the global, regional, and national temporal trends of age-standardized rates (ASRs) of ARHL by gender, age, and severity. The number of prevalent cases and disability-adjusted life years (DALYs) of ARHL increased from 751.50 million and 22.01 million in 1990 to 1456.66 million and 40.24 million in 2019, respectively. Except for a few countries such as Niger and Burkina Faso, the age-standardized prevalence rate and age-standardized DALYs rate showed a downward trend in most countries and regions. Mild ARHL accounted for the largest proportion in all ARHL, and only mild ARHL showed an upward trend in ASRs. In most regions, the proportion of ARHL disease burden attributable to occupational noise showed a downward trend in the past 30 years. In 2019, ARHL disease burden attributable to occupational noise declined with the increase of socio-demographic index in countries. Although the ASR of ARHL in most parts of the world is declining, the absolute disease burden of ARHL is still heavy. Understanding the real-time disease burden of ARHL and its temporal trend is of great significance for formulating more effective preventive measures and reducing the ARHL burden.

Abstract
Background: In 2010, the European Working Group on Sarcopenia in Older People (EWGSOP1) issued its first operational definition to diagnose sarcopenia. This was updated in 2019 with a revised sequence of muscle mass and muscle strength (EWGSOP2). The aim of the study was to investigate the impact of these different operational definitions on sarcopenia prevalence in a representative population-based sample. Methods: For each algorithm, the prevalence of sarcopenia-related categories was calculated and related to sociodemographic and lifestyle variables, anthropometric parameters, and laboratory biomarkers. The present analysis used data from the Salus in Apulia Study (Italy, 740 subjects, mean age 75.5 ± 5.9 years, 54% women). Results: The application of the EWGSOP1 adapted algorithm resulted in 85% [95% confidence intervals (CI): 82–88%] non-sarcopenic subjects, 10% (95% CI: 8–12%) pre-sarcopenic subjects, and 5% (95% CI: 3–7%) sarcopenic/severe sarcopenic subjects. The sarcopenia-related categories were inversely related to weight and body mass index (BMI), particularly in overweight/obese subjects, and these categories showed favorable metabolic biomarkers. The EWGSOP2 algorithm yielded 73% (95% CI: 69–76%) non-sarcopenic subjects, 24% (95% CI: 21–27%) probably sarcopenic subjects, and 4% (95% CI: 2–5%) sarcopenic subjects. Conclusions: The present study identified BMI as a potential confounder of the prevalence estimates of sarcopenia-related categories in population-based settings with different EWGSOP operational definitions.

Abstract
This review aims to provide a conceptual and theoretical overview of the association between gut dysbiosis and hearing loss. Hearing loss is a global health issue; the World Health Organisation (WHO) estimates that 2.5 billion people will be living with some degree of hearing loss by 2050. The aetiology of sensorineural hearing loss (SNHL) is complex and multifactorial, arising from congenital and acquired causes. Recent evidence suggests that impaired gut health may also be a risk factor for SNHL. Inflammatory bowel disease (IBD), type 2 diabetes, diet-induced obesity (DIO), and high-fat diet (HFD) all show links to hearing loss. Previous studies have shown that a HFD can result in microangiopathy, impaired insulin signalling, and oxidative stress in the inner ear. A HFD can also induce pathological shifts in gut microbiota and affect intestinal barrier (IB) integrity, leading to a leaky gut. A leaky gut can result in chronic systemic inflammation, which may affect extraintestinal organs. Here, we postulate that changes in gut microbiota resulting from a chronic HFD and DIO may cause a systemic inflammatory response that can compromise the permeability of the blood-labyrinth barrier (BLB) in the inner ear, thus inducing cochlear inflammation and hearing deficits.

Abstract
The slow accumulation of inflammatory biomarker levels in the body-also known as inflammaging-has been linked to a myriad of age-related diseases. Some of these include neurodegenerative conditions such as Parkinson's disease, obesity, type II diabetes, cardiovascular disease, and many others. Though a direct correlation has not been established, research connecting age-related hearing loss (ARHL)-the number one communication disorder and one of the most prevalent neurodegenerative diseases of our aged population-and inflammaging has gained interest. Research, thus far, has found that inflammatory markers, such as IL-6 and white blood cells, are associated with ARHL in humans and animals. Moreover, studies investigating ion channels and mitochondrial involvement have shown promising relationships between their functions and inflammaging in the cochlea. In this review, we summarize key findings in inflammaging within the auditory system, the involvement of ion channels and mitochondrial functions, and lastly discuss potential treatment options focusing on controlling inflammation as we age.

Abstract
Importance The association between age-related hearing loss (ARHL) and physical or cognitive frailty has been poorly explored. These associations could define new perspectives for delaying frailty-related processes in older age. Objective To examine whether peripheral ARHL and age-related central auditory processing disorder (CAPD) are independently associated with physical or cognitive frailty. Design, Setting, and Participants This cross-sectional study analyzed registry data from December 31, 2014, on 1929 older (≥65 years) participants of the Salus in Apulia Study (Southern Italy) who underwent audiologic, physical, and neuropsychological assessment. Data analysis was performed from December 12, 2019, to January 4, 2020. Main Outcomes and Measures Prevalence of peripheral ARHL in older individuals with physical and/or cognitive frailty and those without frailty assessed using the Fried criteria (physical) and the Mini-Mental State Examination (cognitive). Multivariable logistic regression models were used to assess associations of audiologic variables with frailty phenotype. Results Data from 1929 participants (mean [SD] age, 73.6 [6.3] years; 974 male [50.5%]) were eligible for the analyses. The prevalence of peripheral ARHL was higher in the physical frailty group (96 [26.6%]) than in the nonfrail group (329 [21.0%]) (difference, 5.61 percentage points; 95% CI, 0.63-10.59 percentage points) and in the cognitive frailty group (40 [38.8%]) than in the nonfrail group (385 [21.1%]) (difference, 17.75 percentage points; 95% CI, 8.2-27.3 percentage points). Age-related CAPD was more prevalent in the physical frailty group (62 [17.2%]) than in the nonfrail group (219 [14.0%]) (difference, 3.21 percentage points; 95% CI, -1.04 to 7.46 percentage points) and in the cognitive frailty group (28 [27.2%]) than in the nonfrail group (253 [13.9%]) (difference, 13.33 percentage points; 95% CI, 4.10-22.21 percentage points). In the multivariable models, age-related CAPD was associated with cognitive frailty in the fully adjusted model (odds ratio [OR], 1.889; 95% CI, 1.094-3.311). There was also an inverse association between the unitary increase in Synthetic Sentence Identification With the Ipsilateral Competitive Message scores, indicating a lower likelihood of this disorder, and cognitive frailty (OR, 0.989; 95% CI, 0.988-0.999). Peripheral ARHL was associated with cognitive frailty only in the partially adjusted model (OR, 1.725; 95% CI, 1.008-2.937). Conclusions and Relevance In this cross-sectional study of 1929 participants, age-related CAPD was independently associated with cognitive frailty. Whether the management of ARHL may help prevent the development of different frailty phenotypes or improve their clinical consequences should be addressed in longitudinal studies and, eventually, well-designed randomized clinical trials.

Abstract
The liver contribution to the biological network underlying physical frailty in aging is underestimated. How best to measure this contribution magnitude and impact on health risk trajectories in frail individuals is not yet entirely clear. We analyzed the association of a novel liver frailty phenotype with the risk of death in older participants of the Salus in Apulia Study cohort. Clinical and physical examination, routine biomarkers, medical history, and anthropometry were analyzed in 1929 older adults (65 +). Physical frailty was classified by Cardiovascular Health Study criteria, and liver fibrosis risk by fibrosis-4 (FIB-4). The liver frailty phenotype was defined as physical frailty plus high-risk liver fibrosis (score > 2.67). Physical frailty, high-risk liver fibrosis, and liver frailty subjects were compared to subjects without these conditions (non-frail). Proportional Cox regression tested the adjusted association between liver frailty and all-cause mortality for each category. The liver frailty prevalence was relatively low (3.8%), but higher in men (58.1%). Compared to non-frail older subjects, liver frailty subjects were significantly older (effect size (ES) - 1.11, 95% confidence interval (CI) - 1.35 to - 0.87), with a lower education (ES 0.48, 95%CI 0.24 to 0.71) and higher multimorbidity (ES 15.81, 95%CI 4.20 to 27.41). Cox multivariate analyses showed a two-fold increased risk of overall mortality (hazard ratio 2.09, 95%CI 1.16-3.74) even after the adjustment for age, sex, education, and alcohol consumption. The liver frailty phenotype runs twice the risk of overall mortality compared with the non-frail population. This clinical tool, validated in a Southern Italian population, is based on simple sets of measures that can conveniently be assessed also in the primary care setting.

Abstract
BACKGROUND AND PURPOSE In older age, physical and cognitive declines have been shown to occur simultaneously or consequent to one another, and several operational definitions have been proposed to consider the co-presence of the two declines; for example, "Motoric cognitive risk syndrome" (MCR) has been proposed as a definition for the coexistence of slow gait plus subjective cognitive complaints. Given the increasing interest in MCR and its potential role as both biomarker and therapeutic target, we aimed to estimate its prevalence in a large cohort of non-demented older subjects, and to examine the associations between physical status, global cognitive dysfunction, and impairment in various cognitive domains in MCR. METHODS A population-based sample of 1041 older people in Southern Italy (mean age 75.15 years) was enrolled. We defined MCR using slowness and a single question for subjective cognitive complaints. We also administered a comprehensive neuropsychological test battery, together with tests assessing physical function. RESULTS The prevalence of MCR was 9.9% (95% confidence interval 8.2-11.9). MCR was associated with decreased processing speed and executive function after adjusting for all relevant confounders. However, we found no significant association of MCR with decreased global cognition and immediate/delayed free recall of verbal memory. MCR was also associated with increased exhaustion, low muscle strength, and low physical activity, and increased levels of C-reactive protein and interleukin-6. CONCLUSIONS The present findings on MCR prevalence and associated cognitive and physical domains and inflammatory biomarkers may help to uncover altered pathways and therapeutic targets for intervention during the long preclinical phase of neurodegenerative dementia.

Abstract
Objectives Central auditory processing disorder (CAPD) commonly occurs in older age. However, few studies of a possible link between age-related CAPD and diet in an older population have been conducted. The objective of the present study was to investigate the relationship between eating habits and age-related CAPD in a population >65 years, using cross-sectional and retrospective data obtained in the same population-based study about 12 years ago. Methods We selected 734 participants (403 men) from a large population-based study. For age-related CAPD assessment, we used the Synthetic Sentence Identification with Ipsilateral Competitive Message test. Dietary habits were assessed by a Food Frequency Questionnaire. Associations between age-related CAPD and food groups/macro-and micronutrients were explored using adjusted logistic regression models. Results Age-related CAPD subjects consumed more dairy (111 vs. 98 g/d), olives and vegetable oil (63 vs. 52 g/d) and spirits (2 vs.1 g/d), and less fruits (536 vs. 651 g/d) in the cross-sectional analysis. Age-related CAPD subjects had a lower intake of potassium, vitamin C, and a higher fat intake. Further analyses identified dietary fiber as being inversely related to age-related CAPD. Discussion The present study provided evidence that the dietary hypotheses proposed for explaining the development of cognitive disorders in older age might also hold for age-related CAPD. Further data from other large and prospective population-based studies are needed for confirming these findings.

Abstract
Age-related hearing loss (ARHL) is a major and rapidly growing public health problem that causes disability, social isolation, and socioeconomic cost. Nutritional status is known to cause many aging-related problems, and recent studies have suggested that there are interaction effects between ARHL and dietary factors. We aimed to investigate the association between ARHL and dietary assessment using data from the fifth Korean National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey, which is a nationwide cross-sectional survey that included 5201 participants aged ≥50 years from 2010 to 2012. All participants had normal findings on otoscopic examination and symmetric hearing thresholds of <15 dB between both sides. Nutritional survey data included food consumption and nutrient intake using the 24 h recall method. Data were analyzed using multiple regression models with complex sampling adjusted for confounding factors, such as age, sex, educational level, and history of diabetes. Higher intake of seeds and nuts, fruits, seaweed, and vitamin A were positively associated with better hearing. Our findings suggest that dietary antioxidants or anti-inflammatory food may help reduce ARHL.

Abstract
PURPOSE We investigated the association between the inflammatory potential of the diet and hearing loss in the context of aging. METHODS We studied 3435 French adults enrolled in the SU.VI.MAX 2 (2007-2009) cohort. The inflammatory potential of the diet was estimated by the Dietary Inflammatory Index (DII®) using ≥ 3 baseline 24-h dietary records. Subjective hearing loss was assessed after a mean of 12.5 ± 0.7 years by 3 individual items (ability to carry a conversation in a noisy setting, frequently asking for repetition, and need to increase the television/radio volume) and by a composite score, dichotomized for analyses. We fit sex-specific multivariable logistic regression models. RESULTS Compared with males, females had higher DII scores (i.e., more pro-inflammatory diet) and less subjective hearing loss. Among males, a significant positive association between DII (continuous scale) and inability to carry a conversation in a noisy setting was found (OR = 1.10; 95% CI 1.02, 1.18), while the opposite was seen among females (OR = 0.92; 95% CI 0.87, 0.98). Regarding the need to turn up the television/radio volume, a significant positive association with DII (continuous scale) was found only among males (OR = 1.09; 95% CI 1.01, 1.18). A significant association with the subjective hearing loss composite score was found among females (ORQ3 vs Q1 = 0.74; 95% CI 0.57, 0.97). CONCLUSION The findings among males supported the hypothesis that a pro-inflammatory diet could increase risk of hearing loss, whereas the findings among females were unexpected. Abstract
OBJECTIVES Consistency among population-based studies investigating the relationship between diet and cognition in older inhabitants in the Mediterranean area is poor. The present study investigated whether diet changes over 12 years were associated with cognitive function in older people in Southern-Italy. METHODS From the 'Salus in Apulia Study', that includes the MICOL and GreatAGE Studies, 584 participants were selected, firstly enrolled in MICOL3 (M3) and later in the GreatAGE Study (MICOL4, M4). Foods and micronutrients intake were recorded in both studies, and global cognitive function in M4, assessed with the Mini Mental State Examination. RESULTS Plant-based foods, particularly coffee and vegetables, as well as vitamin A sources, were inversely associated to age-related cognitive impairment. Alcohol consumption showed a detrimental role on cognition, while red meat appeared to be beneficial in the present study, although its role is traditionally considered harmful for cognitive function. DISCUSSION Our study confirmed that a traditional Mediterranean dietary pattern based on agricultural products and low alcohol consumption may help to prevent/delay age-related cognitive impairment.

Abstract
This study investigated the synergistic effects of risk factors on age-related hearing loss (ARHL) using nationwide cross-sectional data of 33,552 individuals from the 2010‒2013 Korea National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey. Patients with ARHL were selected based on their pure-tone audiometry results. Previously reported risk factors for ARHL were analyzed using logistic regression and propensity score-matching, and synergistic effects between risk factors were analyzed using propensity score-matching. Of the 12,570 individuals aged 40–79 years, 2002 (15.9%) met the criteria for ARHL. Male sex, exposure to occupational noise, and diabetes showed a significant relationship with ARHL (p < 0.05) in both the logistic regression and propensity score-matching analyses. Smoking and diabetes showed the strongest significant synergistic effect on ARHL (odds ratio [OR] 1.963, 95% confidence interval [CI] 1.285‒2.998; p = 0.002). In the subgroup analysis based on smoking status, current smokers with diabetes had a significant relationship with ARHL (OR 1.883, CI 1.191‒2.975; p = 0.009), whereas ex-smokers with diabetes did not (OR 1.250; CI 0.880‒1.775; p = 0.246). This implies that current smokers with diabetes may benefit from the cessation of smoking. In conclusion, patients with diabetes should strictly avoid or cease smoking to prevent the progression of ARHL.

Abstract
INTRODUCTION Non-verbal figural fluency is related to executive functions and specifically to the ability to create as many unique designs as possible, while minimizing their repetitions. An Italian version of figural fluency is the Modified Five-Point Test (MFPT), which is highly employed in the clinical practice of neuropsychologists. To date, reference data of Italian population are limited to a sample aged between 16 and 60 years old. Thus, the current study aims to provide normative data of the MFPT in the context of a population-based setting, conducted in Southern Italy. MATERIAL AND METHODS We collected N = 340 Italian healthy subjects, aged over 65 years old (range: 65-91), pooled across subgroups for age, sex, and education. Multiple regression analyses were performed to estimate the effect of age, education, and sex on the participant's performance. Equivalent scores and cut-off scores were also defined for the number of unique designs (UDs) and the number of strategies (CSs). RESULTS Multiple regression analyses revealed that UDs increase with decreasing age and increasing educational level. CSs are influenced by higher educational levels but neither by age nor sex. A significant inverse correlation between the UDs and percentage of errors occurred, suggesting that a higher number of UDs are associated with a fewer number of errors and higher CSs employed. CONCLUSION The MFPT provides a measure of cognitive functioning in terms of the ability to initiate and realize designs, affording useful hints for clinical settings. The MFPT may represent a handy and useful tool with a specific focus in the differentiation of healthy versus pathological aging.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Age-related hearing loss (ARHL) and retinal vessel changes have both been associated to neurodegeneration/dementia, suggesting a possible link between these two conditions in older age. We aimed to determine whether superficial and deep vascular density (SVD and DVD) of the capillary plexi of macular vasculature can be associated with peripheral ARHL and age-related central auditory central processing (CAPD). METHODS We analyzed data on 886 older participants (65 years+, age range:65-92 years) in the cross-sectional population-based Salus in Apulia Study. Optical coherence tomography angiography (OCT-A) was used to measure SVD and DVD of the capillary plexi of the macula at the 3-mm circle area centered on the fovea (whole retina), the parafoveal quadrant, and foveal quadrant. Disabling peripheral ARHL was defined as >40 dB HL of pure tone average on the frequencies from 0.5, 1, 2, and 4 KHz in the better ear, and age-related CAPD as <50% at the Synthetic Sentence Identification with Ipsilateral Competitive Message test in at least one ear. RESULTS DVD at the whole retina and at the parafoveal quadrant were inversely associated only with age-related CAPD [odds ratio (OR):0.93; 95% confidence interval (CI): 0.88-0.96 and OR:0.94; 95 CI:0.90-0.99, respectively]. No further associations with peripheral ARHL were evident. CONCLUSIONS Retinal vasculature is associated with central auditory processing pathology, possibly playing an important role in early detection and intervention. The association of retinal vascular density with age-related CAPD may bring us a further step forward in understanding the biological mechanisms underlying the links between neurodegeneration/dementia and ARHL.

Abstract
Self-report questionnaires are a valuable method of physical activity measurement in public health research; however, accuracy is often lacking. Resolving the differences between self-reported and objectively measured physical activity is an important surveillance challenge currently facing population health experts. The present work aims at providing the relationship between activity energy expenditure estimated from wrist-worn accelerometers and intensity of self-reported physical activity (InCHIANTI structured interview questionnaire) in a sub-cohort of a population-based study on aging in Southern Italy. Linear regression was used to test the association between measured and reported physical activity. We found that activity energy expenditure predicted clinical average levels of PA assessed through InCHIANTI classification.
