Abstract
Background: Microbial fermentation of non-digestible carbohydrates and/or protein produces short-chain fatty acids (SCFA), whereas branched-chain fatty acids (BCFA) are produced from protein fermentation. The effects of individual SCFA and BCFA of comparable carbon chain length on adipocyte inflammation have not been investigated. Objective: To compare the effects of SCFA and BCFA on inflammatory mediator secretion in an adipocyte cell culture model designed to recapitulate obesity-associated adipocyte inflammation under normoxic and hypoxic conditions. Methods: The 3T3-L1 adipocytes were cultured (24 h) without (Control, Con) and with 1 mmol/L of SCFA (butyric acid (But) or valeric acid (Val)) or 1 mmol/L of BCFA (isobutyric acid (IsoBut) or isovaleric acid (IsoVal)) and were unstimulated (cells alone, n = 6/treatment), or stimulated with 10 ng/mL lipopolysaccharide (LPS, inflammatory stimulus, n = 8/treatment) or 10 ng/mL LPS + 100 µmol/L of the hypoxia memetic cobalt chloride (LPS/CC, inflammatory/hypoxic stimulus, n = 8/treatment). Results: Compared to Con + LPS, But + LPS reduced secreted protein levels of interleukin (IL)-1β, IL-6, macrophage chemoattractant protein (MCP)-1/chemokine ligand (CCL)2, MCP3/CCL7, macrophage inflammatory protein (MIP)-1α/CCL3 and regulated upon activation, normal T cell expressed, and secreted (RANTES)/CCL5 and decreased intracellular protein expression of the ratio of phosphorylated to total signal transducer and activator of transcription 3 (STAT3) and nuclear factor kappa B (NFκB) p65 (p < 0.05). Val + LPS reduced IL-6 secretion and increased MCP-1/CCL2 secretion compared to Con + LPS and exhibited a different inflammatory mediator secretory profile from But + LPS (p < 0.05), indicating that individual SCFA exert individual effects. There were no differences in the secretory profile of the BCFA IsoBut + LPS and IsoVal + LPS (p > 0.05). Alternatively, under inflammatory hypoxic conditions (LPS/CC) Val, IsoVal, and IsoBut all increased secretion of IL-6, MCP-1/CCL2 and MIP-1α/CCL3 compared to Con (p < 0.05), whereas mediator secretion did not differ between But and Con (p > 0.05), indicating that the proinflammatory effects of SCFA and BCFA was attenuated by But. Interestingly, But + LPS/CC decreased STAT3 activation versus Con + LPS/CC (p < 0.05). Conclusions: The decreased secretion of inflammatory mediators that is attributable to But highlights the fact that individual SCFA and BCFA exert differential effects on adipocyte inflammation under normoxic and hypoxic conditions.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Phenotypic age (PhenoAge), a widely used marker of biological aging, has been shown to be a robust predictor of all-cause mortality and morbidity in different populations. Existing studies on biological aging have primarily focused on individual domains, resulting in a lack of a comprehensive understanding of the multi-systemic dysregulation that occurs in aging. METHODS PhenoAge was evaluated based on a linear combination of chronological age (CA) and 9 clinical biomarkers in 952 multi-ethnic Asian women of reproductive age. Phenotypic age acceleration (PhenoAgeAccel), an aging biomarker, represents PhenoAge after adjusting for CA. This study conducts an in-depth association analysis of PhenoAgeAccel with clinical, nutritional, lipidomic, gut microbiome, and genetic factors. RESULTS Higher adiposity, glycaemia, plasma saturated fatty acids, kynurenine pathway metabolites, GlycA, riboflavin, nicotinamide, and insulin-like growth factor binding proteins were positively associated with PhenoAgeAccel. Conversely, a healthier diet and higher levels of pyridoxal phosphate, all-trans retinol, betaine, tryptophan, glutamine, histidine, apolipoprotein B, and insulin-like growth factors were inversely associated with PhenoAgeAccel. Lipidomic analysis found 132 lipid species linked to PhenoAgeAccel, with PC(O-36:0) showing the strongest positive association and CE(24:5) demonstrating the strongest inverse association. A genome-wide association study identified rs9864994 as the top genetic variant (P = 5.69E-07) from the ZDHHC19 gene. Gut microbiome analysis revealed that Erysipelotrichaceae UCG-003 and Bacteroides vulgatus were inversely associated with PhenoAgeAccel. Integrative network analysis of aging-related factors underscored the intricate links among clinical, nutritional and lipidomic variables, such as positive associations between kynurenine pathway metabolites, amino acids, adiposity, and insulin resistance. Furthermore, potential mediation effects of blood biomarkers related to inflammation, immune response, and nutritional and energy metabolism were observed in the associations of diet, adiposity, genetic variants, and gut microbial species with PhenoAgeAccel. CONCLUSIONS Our findings provide a comprehensive analysis of aging-related factors across multiple platforms, delineating their complex interconnections. This study is the first to report novel signatures in lipidomics, gut microbiome and blood biomarkers specifically associated with PhenoAgeAccel. These insights are invaluable in understanding the molecular and metabolic mechanisms underlying biological aging and shed light on potential interventions to mitigate accelerated biological aging by targeting modifiable factors.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Several studies have revealed the positive healthy impacts of branched-chain fatty acids (BCFAs). However, most of these studies evaluated the serum BCFAs in humans, or treatment with exogenous BCFAs in animal or in-vitro models and the health impacts of dietary BCFAs have not yet been studied. Due to positive effects of BCFAs in sport, in the current study, we aimed to investigate the association between dietary BCFAs and metabolic and inflammatory parameters among elite and subelite soccer players. METHODS A cross-sectional study was carried out among 335 elite and subelite soccer players (196 male), aged between 20 and 45 years old. Soccer players were enrolled from 32 teams under the directive of The Chinese Football Association. Demographic, anthropometric, and dietary assessments were performed and laboratory measurement including serum lipids, glycemic markers, and high-sensitivity C-reactive protein was measured. RESULTS Those with the highest dietary BCFAs consumption had higher appetite (p = .009). Also, high consumption of dietary BCFAs was associated with lower diastolic blood pressure (odds ratio: 0.958; confidence interval: 0.918-0.999; p = .046) and low high-sensitivity C-reactive protein concentrations in the third tertile of dietary BCFAs (odds ratio: 0.431; confidence interval: 0.300-0.618; p < .001). No other association between biochemical variables and dietary BCFAs was found. CONCLUSION As shown in the current study, higher dietary BCFAs consumption was associated with lower diastolic blood pressure and inflammation. Due to very limited number of studies, further studies are needed to have a better perspective of these associations and their underlying mechanisms.

Abstract
SCOPE Monomethyl-branched chain fatty acids (mmBCFAs) are found in a variety of food sources and are of great interest due to their potent antiinflammatory properties. However, most of the current researches have concentrated on the relationship between mmBCFAs and intestinal inflammation, and there is a large gap in the biological mechanisms involved behind their antiinflammatory effects. METHODS AND RESULTS The present study examines the role of mmBCFAs in modulating macrophage polarization. The results demonstrate that iso-C16:0 significantly inhibits macrophages M1 proinflammatory polarization through regulating FABP4/PPAR-γ pathway. Proteomics and molecular biology experiments verify that metabolic reprogramming is involved in the inhibition of M1 macrophage, referring to the upregulation of fatty acid oxidation, TCA cycle, and oxidative phosphorylation, as well as downregulation of glycolytic flux. CONCLUSION In summary, this study offers a novel perspective on the antiinflammatory effects mediated by mmBCFAs.

Abstract
In the current study, how pectin retards the digestibility of wheat gluten was investigated using a static in vitro gastric-duodenal model. The degree of protein hydrolysis was estimated using the o-phthaldialdehyde method, while the in vitro digestograms were mathematically fitted using a single first-order kinetics model. Peptides' profile, free amino acids compositions, gluten-pectin interactions and their effects on enzymatic activities of proteolytic enzymes as well as on the gluten secondary structures under digestive conditions were studied using combined techniques. Results showed that pectin could retard gluten digestibility through 1). preferential absorption to insoluble gluten aggregates by electrostatic interactions; 2). increasing the helix and reducing the β-sheet content of the solubilized gluten protein fractions in terms of their secondary molecular structures; 3). reducing pepsin activity by forming negatively charged pectin-gluten mixtures which then interacted with the positively charged pepsin molecules. The deeper insight into gluten-pectin interactions and their influences on gluten digestibility under gastrointestinal conditions provides important clues for developing effective forms of dietary fiber to improve the nutritional benefits of plant protein in individuals.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Lipoprotein apheresis (LA) is an extracorporeal treatment that transiently reduces lipoprotein (a) [Lp(a)] by 60% and leads to an 80-92% reduction in major adverse cardiovascular events. LA has a significant impact on lipid profile in serum of patients with atherosclerotic cardiovascular disease. OBJECTIVE To investigate the effects of LA on the composition of serum fatty acids (FAs), focusing on those which could have an impact on cardiovascular disease (CVD). METHODS This is a prospective study in the First Department of Cardiology of the Medical University of Gdansk, Poland. Serum samples were collected from 28 patients before LA, just after the procedure, and 7 days after LA. Additionally, in a smaller group of patients, the samples were collected after a second tour of LA (2 weeks later), as well as after 1 year from the first procedure. The serum FA profile was analyzed using gas chromatography-mass spectrometry. RESULTS After the LA procedure, a substantial change in serum FA composition along with low-density lipoprotein cholesterol (LDL-C) and Lp(a) decrease were observed 7 days after procedure, but these parameters returned to the values similar to those before procedure after 14 days. Very long-chain FAs (VLCFAs) and very long-chain monounsaturated FAs (VLC-MUFAs) were eluted at 57% and remained low even 7 days after LA (p=0.027 and p < 0.001, respectively). We also observed an increase in the percentage of total branched-chain FAs (BCFAs) (p=0.004) and anteiso BCFAs (p=0.012) after LA. After 1 year of regular LA, a substantial decrease in serum VLC-MUFAs and n3 polyunsaturated LA (PUFAs) were noted. CONCLUSIONS Decreased VLCFAs and VLC-MUFAs involved in CVD development remained low even 7 days after LA. An acute increase in the levels of anti-inflammatory BCFAs was observed. In turn long-term regular administration of LA substantially decreased VLC-MUFA and n3 PUFA.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Plant-based dietary patterns are a source of different amounts and proportions of fatty acids (FAs) from those in traditional diets. Information about the full FAs profile provided by plant-based diets is widely lacking. The aim of this study was to present the exact serum profiles of FAs among people on a plant-based diet compared with omnivorous subjects. METHODS FAs compositions and inflammation statuses (based on serum C-reactive protein (CRP) levels) were studied in serum samples obtained from 102 female volunteers (divided into four groups: vegans, vegetarians, pescatarians, and omnivores). The quality of the volunteers' diets was assessed based on seven-day dietary records. RESULTS Both vegans and vegetarians had lower total n-3 PUFAs, EPA, and DHA serum levels than omnivores. Decreased levels of these FAs presumably did not cause inflammation in vegetarians and vegans, as vegetarians had similar serum levels of CRP compared to omnivores, and vegans had even lower levels. CONCLUSION The analysis of serum FAs and CRP levels in vegetarians and vegans suggests that factors other than diet alone influence inflammation and overall health status. Further research on long-term plant-based diet users is needed to better understand this issue, and supplementation with EPA and DHA is worth considering in vegans and vegetarians.

Abstract
Branched-chain fatty acids (BCFAs) consist of a wide variety of fatty acids with alkyl branching of methyl group. The most common BCFAs are the types with one methyl group (mmBCFA) on the penultimate carbon (iBCFA) or the antepenultimate carbon (aiBCFA). Long-chain mmBCFAs are widely existing in animal fats, milks and are mostly derived from bacteria in the diet or animal digestive system. Recent studies show that BCFAs benefit human intestinal health and immune homeostasis, but the connection between their content, distribution in the human and their nutritional functions are not well established. In this paper, we reviewed BCFAs from various dietary sources focused on their molecular species. The BCFAs biosynthesis in bacteria, Caenorhabditis elegans, mammals and their distribution in human tissues are summarized. This paper also discusses the nutritional properties of BCFAs including influences on intestinal health, immunoregulatory effects, anti-carcinoma, and anti-obesity activities, by highlighting the most recent research progress.

Abstract
While branched-chain fatty acids (BCFA)-enriched triacylglycerols (TAG) has various health benefits, its preparation has not been reported. This study aimed to synthesize high-purity BCFA-enriched structured TAG. First, BCFA was enriched from lanolin through saponification, calcification, and urea complexation. Next, BCFA-enriched TAG was synthesized by enzymatic esterification of BCFA and glycerol. Then, lipases were screened by molecular docking and practical experiments, which suggested that Lipozyme 435 was the best lipase for esterification since it had the lowest binding energy. Structured TAG containing 92.23% BCFA was synthesized under conditions optimized by single-factor experiments. Furthermore, molecular distillation was adapted to remove excess fatty acids and small molecule impurities. Finally, high-purity BCFA-enriched structured lipid containing 70.26% TAG was obtained. Overall, this study successfully developed a method for synthesizing BCFA-enriched structured TAG, which holds great promise for applications in value-added foods.

Abstract
Branched-long-chain monomethyl fatty acids (BLCFA) are consumed daily in significant amounts by humans in all stages of life. BLCFA are absorbed and metabolized in human intestinal epithelial cells and are not only oxidized for energy. Thus far, BLCFA have been revealed to possess versatile beneficial bioactivities, including cytotoxicity to cancer cells, anti-inflammation, lipid-lowering, reducing the risk of metabolic disorders, maintaining normal β cell function and insulin sensitivity, regulation of development, and mitigating cerebral ischemia/reperfusion injury. However, compared to other well-studied dietary fatty acids like eicosapentaenoic acid (EPA) and docosahexaenoic acid (DHA), BLCFA has received disproportionate attention despite their potential importance. Here we outlined the major food sources, estimated intake, absorption, and metabolism in human cells, and bioactive properties of BLCFA with a focus on the bioactive mechanisms to advocate for an increased commitment to BLCFA investigations. Humans were estimated to absorb 6-5000 mg of dietary BLCFA daily from fetus to adult. Notably, iso-15:0 inhibited the growth of prostate cancer, liver cancer and T-cell non-Hodgkin lymphomas in rodent models at the effective doses of 35-105 mg/kg/day, 70 mg/kg/day, and 70 mg/kg/day, respectively. Feeding formula prepared with 20% w/w BLCFA mixture to neonatal rats with enterocolitis mitigated the intestine inflammation. Iso-15:0 at doses of 10, 40, and 80 mg/kg relieved brain ischemia/reperfusion injury in rats. In the future, it is crucial to conduct research to establish the epidemiology of BLCFA intake and their impacts on health outcomes in humans as well as to fully uncover the underlying mechanisms for their bioactivities.

Abstract
Cold-induced thermogenesis (CIT) is widely studied as a potential avenue to treat obesity, but a thorough understanding of the metabolic changes driving CIT is lacking. Here, we present a comprehensive and quantitative analysis of the metabolic response to acute cold exposure, leveraging metabolomic profiling and minimally perturbative isotope tracing studies in unanesthetized mice. During cold exposure, brown adipose tissue (BAT) primarily fueled the tricarboxylic acid (TCA) cycle with fat in fasted mice and glucose in fed mice, underscoring BAT's metabolic flexibility. BAT minimally used branched-chain amino acids or ketones, which were instead avidly consumed by muscle during cold exposure. Surprisingly, isotopic labeling analyses revealed that BAT uses glucose largely for TCA anaplerosis via pyruvate carboxylation. Finally, we find that cold-induced hepatic gluconeogenesis is critical for CIT during fasting, demonstrating a key functional role for glucose metabolism. Together, these findings provide a detailed map of the metabolic rewiring driving acute CIT.

Abstract
Fatty acids (FAs) are known to play an important role in human metabolism; however, still little is known about the functions of certain FA classes present in blood at relatively low concentrations. Examples of such compounds include branched-chain fatty acids (BCFAs). Recently, lowered BCFAs blood concentration was noticed in obese patients. An inverse correlation was found between serum concentrations of BCFAs and triglyceride levels, as well as C-reactive protein (CRP) concentration. Obesity is the most frequently observed component of metabolic syndrome and both disorders are accompanied by the dysregulation of FAs metabolism. However, not all of them are well understood. Our study is the first attempt at presenting the opposite effects of an iso-BCFA (14-methylpentadecanoic acid, 14-MPA) and an anteiso-BCFA (12-methyltetradecanoic acid, 12-MTA) on selected genes related to fatty acid synthesis and inflammation: FASN, SREBP1, CRP, and IL-6 in the HepG2 cell line. We observed lowered expression of FASN, SREBP1, CRP, and IL-6 in cells treated with 14-MPA in comparison with control cells. In contrast, supplementation with 12-MTA caused opposite effects: increased mRNA levels of FASN, CRP, and IL-6. 12-MTA did not influence SREBP1 expression. The results of our preliminary study may suggest potential benefits of the supplementation of iso-BCFAs in obese patients, for inflammation and hypertriglyceridemia prevention.

Abstract
Gestational diabetes mellitus (GDM) is a common complication of pregnancy that has been associated with an increased risk of obesity and diabetes in the offspring. Pregnancy is accompanied by tightly regulated changes in the endocrine, metabolic, immune, and microbial systems, and deviations from these changes can alter the mother's metabolism resulting in adverse pregnancy outcomes and a negative impact on the health of her infant. Maternal microbiomes are significant drivers of mother and child health outcomes, and many microbial metabolites are likely to influence the host health. This review discusses the current understanding of how the microbiota and microbial metabolites may contribute to the development of GDM and how GDM-associated changes in the maternal microbiome can affect infant's health. We also describe microbiota-based interventions that aim to improve metabolic health and outline future directions for precision medicine research in this emerging field.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Breast cancer is associated with alterations in lipid metabolism. The treatment of breast cancer can also affect serum lipid composition. The purpose of this study was the examination of serum fatty acids (FAs) profiles in breast cancer survivors to assess if the FA levels normalize. METHODS Serum levels of FAs were determined by gas chromatography-mass spectrometry in a group of breast cancer patients at baseline (before treatment, n = 28), at two follow-up visits at 12 months (n = 27) and 24 months (n = 19) after the breast cancer resection, and in the group of healthy controls (n = 25). Multivariate analysis was performed to assess how FA serum profile changes following treatment. RESULTS Breast cancer patients' serum FA profiles at follow-ups did not normalize to the levels of control group. The greatest differences were found for levels of branched-chain (BCFA), odd-chain (OCFA) and polyunsaturated (PUFAs) FAs, all of which were significantly increased 12 months after the surgery. CONCLUSIONS After treatment for breast cancer, the patients' serum FA profile differs from the profile before treatment and from controls, especially 12 months after treatment. Some changes may be beneficial - increased BCFA and OCFA levels, and improved n-6/n-3 PUFA ratio. This may reflect lifestyle changes in breast cancer survivors and have an impact on the risk of recurrence.

Abstract
Branched-chain fatty acids (BCFA) are a group of lipids that are widely present in various organisms; they take part in numerous biochemical processes and affect multiple signaling pathways. However, BCFA are not well explored in terms of their effects on human health. Recently, they have been gaining interest, especially in relation to various human diseases. This review describes the occurrence of BCFA, their dietary sources, their potential health effects, and the current state of knowledge concerning their mechanism(s) of action. Many studies have been conducted so far in cellular and animal models, which reveal potent anti-cancer, lipid lowering, anti-inflammatory and neuroprotective actions. Research in humans is scarce. Therefore, further studies on animals and humans should be performed to confirm and expand these findings, and improve our understanding of the potential relevance of BCFA to human health and disease.

Abstract
Hydroxylated polymethoxyflavones (HPMFs) have been shown to possess various anti-disease effects, including against obesity. This study investigates the anti-obesity effects of HPMFs in further detail, aiming to gain understanding of their mechanism of action in this context. The current study demonstrates that two HPMFs; 3'-hydroxy-5,7,4',5'-tetramethoxyflavone (3'OH-TetMF) and 4'-hydroxy-5,7,3',5'-tetramethoxyflavone (4'OH-TetMF) possess anti-obesity effects. They both significantly reduced pancreatic lipase activity in a competitive manner as demonstrated by molecular docking and kinetic studies. In cell studies, it was revealed that both of the HPMFs suppress differentiation of 3T3-L1 mouse embryonic fibroblast cells during the early stages of adipogenesis. They also reduced expression of key adipogenic and lipogenic marker genes, namely peroxisome proliferator-activated receptor-gamma (PPAR-γ), CCAAT/enhancer-binding protein α and β (C/EBP α and β), adipocyte binding protein 2 (aP2), fatty acid synthase (FASN), and sterol regulatory element-binding protein 1 (SREBF 1). They also enhanced the expression of cell cycle genes, i.e., cyclin D1 (CCND1) and C-Myc, and reduced cyclin A2 expression. When further investigated, it was also observed that these HPMFs accelerate lipid breakdown (lipolysis) and enhance lipolytic gene expression. Moreover, they also reduced the secretion of proteins (adipokines), including pro-inflammatory cytokines, from mature adipocytes. Taken together, this study concludes that these HPMFs have anti-obesity effects, which are worthy of further investigation.

Abstract
Depression is a common and complex mental and emotional disorder that causes disability, morbidity, and quite often mortality around the world. Depression is closely related to several physical and metabolic conditions causing metabolic depression. Studies have indicated that there is a relationship between the intestinal microbiota and the brain, known as the gut–brain axis. While this microbiota–gut–brain connection is disturbed, dysfunctions of the brain, immune system, endocrine system, and gastrointestinal tract occur. Numerous studies show that intestinal dysbiosis characterized by abnormal microbiota and dysfunction of the microbiota–gut–brain axis could be a direct cause of mental and emotional disorders. Traditional treatment of depression includes psychotherapy and pharmacotherapy, and it mainly targets the brain. However, restoration of the intestinal microbiota and functions of the gut–brain axis via using probiotics, their metabolites, prebiotics, and healthy diet may alleviate depressive symptoms. Administration of probiotics labeled as psychobiotics and their metabolites as metabiotics, especially as an adjuvant to antidepressants, improves mental disorders. It is a new approach to the prevention, management, and treatment of mental and emotional illnesses, particularly major depressive disorder and metabolic depression. For the effectiveness of antidepressant therapy, psychobiotics should be administered at a dose higher than 1 billion CFU/day for at least 8 weeks.

Abstract
OBJECTIVE Alterations in the hepatic lipidome are a crucial factor involved in the pathophysiology of nonalcoholic fatty liver disease (NAFLD). The aim of this study was to evaluate the serum and hepatic profile of branched-chain fatty acids (BCFAs) in patients with different stages of NAFLD. METHODS This was a case-control study performed in 27 patients without NAFLD, 49 patients with nonalcoholic fatty liver, and 17 patients with nonalcoholic steatohepatitis, defined by liver biopsies. Serum and hepatic levels of BCFAs were analyzed by gas chromatography-mass spectrometry. The hepatic expression of genes involved in the endogenous synthesis of BCFAs was analyzed by real-time quantitative polymerase chain reaction (RT-qPCR). RESULTS A significant increase in hepatic BCFAs was found in subjects with NAFLD compared with those without NAFLD; no differences were observed in serum BCFAs between study groups. Trimethyl BCFAs, iso-BCFAs, and anteiso-BCFAs were increased in subjects with NAFLD (either nonalcoholic fatty liver or nonalcoholic steatohepatitis) compared with those without NAFLD. Correlation analysis showed a relationship between hepatic BCFAs and the histopathological diagnosis of NAFLD, as well as other histological and biochemical parameters related to this disease. Gene expression analysis in liver showed that the mRNA levels of BCAT1, BCAT2, and BCKDHA were upregulated in patients with NAFLD. CONCLUSIONS These results suggest that the increased production of liver BCFAs might be related to NAFLD development and progression.

Abstract
Objective To investigate the expression of short-chain fatty acids (SCFAs)-metabolites of intestinal flora-in gestational complications of gestational diabetes mellitus (GDM), preeclampsia (PE), and intrahepatic cholestasis of pregnancy (ICP), and its clinical significance. Methods Targeted metabonomics was used to detect SCFAs in the serum of 28 GDM pregnant women, 28 PE pregnant women, 29 ICP pregnant women, and 27 healthy pregnant women (NP); their expression changes were observed; the correlation between SCFAs and clinical characteristics was studied; and their potential as biomarkers for clinical diagnosis was evaluated. Results There were significant differences in the SCFA metabolic spectrum between the GDM, PE, ICP, and NP groups. Quantitative analysis showed that the content of isobutyric acid in the three pregnancy complications groups (the GDM, PE, and ICP groups) was significantly higher than that in the NP group (p < 0.05), and other SCFAs also showed significant differences in the three pregnancy complications groups compared with the NP group (p < 0.05). Receiver operating characteristic (ROC) curve analysis of the generalized linear model showed that multiple SCFAs were highly sensitive and specific as diagnostic markers in the pregnancy complications groups, where isobutyric acid was highly predictive in GDM (area under the ROC curve (AUC) = 0.764) and PE (AUC = 1), and caproic acid was highly predictive in ICP (AUC = 0.968), with potential clinical application. Conclusion The metabolic products of intestinal flora, SCFAs, during pregnancy are closely related to pregnancy complications (GDM, PE, and ICP), and SCFAs can be used as potential markers of pregnancy complications.

Abstract
The aim of the study was to compare odd and branched-chain fatty acids (OBCFA) of milk from sheep, goat, cow, buffalo, donkey, human, and formula milk. Ruminant, monogastric, and human milks have different concentrations of these fatty acids (FA). To highlight the differences on OBCFA, a total of 282 individual milk samples were analyzed by gas chromatography. The OBCFA were found higher in ruminant than non-ruminant milks (p < 0.05). Among ruminants, sheep milk had the highest OBCFA (4.5 g/100 g of total FAME), whereases the lowest values were found in formula milk (0.18 g/100 g of total FAME). Regarding individual linear odd-chain FA (linear-OCFA), C11:0 was found higher in donkey milk than others, while sheep and buffalo milks had the greatest concentration of C15:0. Among BCFA, the iso-BCFA were higher than anteiso-BCFA in all considered milks. The isoC17:0 showed the highest concentration in all milks except for donkey and buffalo, which showed higher concentration of isoC16:0 than others. In conclusion, ruminant milks are different in terms of these FA compared to human milk and its substitutes. However, the greatest differences were found with formula milk, suggesting that this product needs the implementation of these FA to be more similar to human milk composition.
