Abstract
BACKGROUND AND AIMS Even though a ban of alcohol marketing has been declared a 'best buy' of alcohol control policy, comprehensive systematic reviews on its effectiveness to reduce consumption are lacking. The aim of this paper was to systematically review the evidence for effects of total and partial bans of alcohol marketing on alcohol consumption. METHODS This descriptive systematic review sought to include all empirical studies that explored how changes in the regulation of alcohol marketing impact on alcohol consumption. The search was conducted between October and December 2022 considering various scientific databases (Web of Science, PsycINFO, MEDLINE, Embase) as well as Google and Google Scholar. The titles and abstracts of a total of 2572 records were screened. Of the 26 studies included in the full text screening, 11 studies were finally included in this review. Changes in consumption in relation to marketing bans were determined based on significance testing in primary studies. Four risk of bias domains (confounding, selection bias, information bias and reporting bias) were assessed. RESULTS Seven studies examined changes in marketing restrictions in one location (New Zealand, Thailand, Canadian provinces, Spain, Norway). In the remaining studies, between 17 and 45 locations were studied (mostly high-income countries from Europe and North America). Of the 11 studies identified, six studies reported null findings. Studies reporting lower alcohol consumption following marketing restrictions were of moderate, serious and critical risk of bias. Two studies with low and moderate risk of bias found increasing alcohol consumption post marketing bans. Overall, there was insufficient evidence to conclude that alcohol marketing bans reduce alcohol consumption. CONCLUSIONS The available empirical evidence does not support the claim of alcohol marketing bans constituting a best buy for reducing alcohol consumption.

Abstract
BACKGROUND For alcohol, regulating availability is an effective way to reduce consumption and harm. Similarly, the higher availability of medical cannabis dispensaries has been linked to increased cannabis consumption and harm. For recreational cannabis markets, such a link is suspected but still poorly understood. METHODS A systematic literature review (PROSPERO registration number 342357) was conducted on 1 July 2022 in common libraries (Medline, Web of Science, PsycInfo, Psyndex, CINAHL, Embase, SCOPUS, Cochrane) for publications since 2012. Studies linking variations in the availability of legal cannabis products to behavioral outcomes (cannabis use or related health indicators) were included, while studies focusing solely on the legalization of medical cannabis were excluded. The risk of bias was assessed using an adapted version of the Newcastle-Ottawa-Scale. RESULTS After screening n = 6,253 studies, n = 136 were selected for full-text review, out of which n = 13 met the inclusion criteria, reporting on n = 333,550 study participants and n = 855,630 presentations to emergency departments. All studies were conducted in North America, with the majority from Western US states. Using longitudinal (n = 1), cross-sectional (n = 4), or repeated cross-sectional (n = 8) study designs, an increased availability of legal cannabis was linked to increased current cannabis use and health-related outcomes (vomiting, psychosis, or cannabis-involved pregnancies), regardless of the indicator employed to measure availability (proximity or density) among both adults and adolescents. The positive correlation between cannabis availability and consumption is most pronounced among those groups who have been less exposed to cannabis before legalization. The association between the availability of legal cannabis and risky use indicators was less consistent. CONCLUSIONS Groups who have been least exposed to cannabis before legalization may be most susceptible to increased availability. In jurisdictions with legal cannabis markets, restrictions on the number of legal cannabis retailers, especially in densely populated areas, appear warranted.

Abstract
BACKGROUND AND AIM Pneumocystis jirovecii pneumonia (PJP) is a very rare, potentially life-threatening pulmonary fungal infection that occurs in immunocompromised individuals including patients with inflammatory bowel disease (IBD). Our aim was to describe immunosuppressive treatment exposure as well as the outcome in IBD patients with PJP. METHODS PJP cases were retrospectively collected through the COllaborative Network For Exceptionally Rare case reports of the European Crohn's and Colitis Organization. Clinical data were provided through a case report form. RESULTS 18 PJP episodes were reported in 17 IBD patients (10 ulcerative colitis and 7 Crohn's disease). The median age on PJP diagnosis was 55 years (IQR, 40-68 years). Two PJP (11.1%) occurred in patients on triple immunosuppression, 10 patients (55.6%) had double immunosuppressive treatment, 4 patients (22.2%) had monotherapy and 2 PJP occurred in absence of immunosuppressive treatment (one in a human immunodeficiency virus patient and one in a patient with a history of autologous stem cell transplantation). Immunosuppressive therapies included steroids (n=12), thiopurines (n=10), infliximab (n=4), ciclosporin (n=2), methotrexate (n=1) and tacrolimus (n=1). None of the patients diagnosed with PJP had received prophylaxis. All patients were treated by trimethoprim/sulfamethoxazole or atovaquone and an ICU stay was required in 7 cases. Two patients (aged 71 and 32 years) died, and one patient had a recurrent episode 16 months after initial treatment. Evolution was favourable for the others. CONCLUSION This case series reporting potentially fatal PJP highlights the need for adjusted prophylactic therapy in patients with IBD on immunosuppressive therapy.

Abstract
X-ray free-electron lasers (XFELs) deliver pulses of coherent X-rays on the femtosecond time scale, with potentially high repetition rates. While XFELs provide high peak intensities, both the intensity and the centroid of the beam fluctuate strongly on a pulse-to-pulse basis, motivating high-rate beam diagnostics that operate over a large dynamic range. The fast drift velocity, low X-ray absorption and high radiation tolerance properties of chemical vapour deposition diamonds make these crystals a promising candidate material for developing a fast (multi-GHz) pass-through diagnostic for the next generation of XFELs. A new approach to the design of a diamond sensor signal path is presented, along with associated characterization studies performed in the XPP endstation of the LINAC Coherent Light Source (LCLS) at SLAC. Qualitative charge collection profiles (collected charge versus time) are presented and compared with those from a commercially available detector. Quantitative results on the charge collection efficiency and signal collection times are presented over a range of approximately four orders of magnitude in the generated electron-hole plasma density.

Abstract
The red blood cell (RBC) antigen Wra is a low-prevalence antigen first described in 1953 by Holman and assigned to the Diego system in 1995. Because of its low prevalence, Wra is usually absent on commercial screening RBCs and antibody identification panels. When Wr(a+) screening RBCs are available, the corresponding antibody, anti-Wra, is often found in sera from healthy individuals, patients, and pregnant women. Anti-Wra can cause both hemolytic transfusion reactions and hemolytic disease of the fetus and newborn. We describe a fatal acute hemolytic transfusion reaction caused by anti-Wra in a patient with no other RBC alloantibodies. Serologic investigation showed that one of the RBC units the patient received was Wr(a+). Immunohematology 2021;37:20-24. Abstract
INTRODUCTION Since April 2015, slow-release oral morphine (SROM) has been approved for opioid agonist treatment (OAT) in Germany. Experimental studies show that benefits of SROM over methadone include less heroin craving, better tolerability, and higher patient satisfaction and mental stability. The SROMOS study (Efficacy and Tolerability of Slow-Release Oral Morphine in Opioid Substitution Treatment) aims to investigate the long-term effects (effectiveness and safety) of morphine substitution under routine care in Germany. MATERIAL AND METHODS This is a prospective, noninterventional, naturalistic, observational study. Between July 2016 and November 2017, this study recruited patients in OAT who decided to switch to SROM from 23 outpatient addiction treatment centers in Germany. The study collected data on mental health (Brief Symptom Inventory - BSI-18), substance use, somatic health (Opiate Treatment Index Health-Symptoms-Scale - OTI-HSS), opioid craving (visual analogue scale), and withdrawal symptoms (Short Opiate Withdrawal Scale) at baseline (t0) and after 3 (t3), 6 (t6) and 12 (t12) months. Physicians documented side effects as adverse events (AEs) and adverse drug reactions (ADRs). RESULTS Three-quarters of the enrolled study participants (N = 180) were male. The average age was 44.4 years. Patients were opioid-dependent for 23 years and had been in OAT for almost seven years on average. After 12 months, 60.6% were still being treated with SROM. Mental health improved significantly under SROM treatment between t0 and t12. The intention-to-treat (ITT), as well as the per-protocol (PP) analysis, shows a statistically significant improvement of the mean Global Severity Index (GSI) of the BSI-18 value of 20% (ITT) and 24% (PP). Physical health also improved significantly under SROM treatment. There were no statistically significant changes in the use of cannabis, cocaine, amphetamines, and tranquillizers in the past 30 days, but heroin use, intravenous consumption, and the number of drinking days significantly decreased. CONCLUSIONS This study provides some of the first long-term data on OAT with SROM under routine care conditions. SROM treatment is an effective alternative for a subgroup of opioid-dependent patients with an unsatisfactory course of OAT or in cases where undesirable side effects due to alternative substances have occurred. ETHICAL STATEMENT The study protocol was approved by the Ethics Committee of the Chamber of Physicians in Hamburg in March 2016 (No. PV5222). The study was conducted by following the Declaration of Helsinki and is registered with the German Register of Clinical Trials (DRKS, ID: DRKS00010712).

Abstract
Background:
Endocrine resistance and metastatic dissemination comprise major clinical
challenges for breast cancer treatment. The fibroblast growth factor receptor family (FGFR) consists
of four tyrosine kinase transmembrane receptors, involved in key biological processes. Genomic alterations
in FGFR have been identified in advanced breast cancer and thus, FGFR are an attractive
therapeutic target. However, the efficacy of FGFR inhibitors on in vivo tumor growth is still controversial.
Objective:
The purpose of this study was to evaluate the role of FGFR in tumor growth and breast
cancer progression.
Methods:
Cell proliferation was assessed by 3H-thymidine uptake and cell counting in primary
cultures of endocrine resistant mammary carcinomas and a human cell line, respectively. Tumor
transplants and cell injections were used to determine in vivo growth and spontaneous metastasis.
FGFR1-3 and αSMA expression were evaluated on primary tumors by immunohistochemistry.
Results:
Antiprogestin resistant murine transplants and a human xenograft express high levels of
total FGFR1-3. In vitro treatment with the FGFR inhibitor, BGJ398, impaired cell proliferation of
resistant variants versus vehicle. In vivo, versus control, BGJ398 treatment decreased one out of
four resistant tumors, however all tumors showed a decreased epithelial/stromal ratio. Finally, in a
model of hormone resistant mammary cancer that spontaneously metastasizes to the lung, BGJ398
decreased the number of mice with lung metastasis.
Conclusion:
FGFR inhibitors are promising tools that require further investigation to identify sensitive
tumors. These studies suggest that targeting FGFR combined with other targeted therapies will
be useful to impair breast cancer progression.

Abstract
There is a consensus that progestins and thus their cognate receptor molecules, the progesterone receptors (PR), are essential in the development of the adult mammary gland and regulators of proliferation and lactation. However, a role for natural progestins in breast carcinogenesis remains poorly understood. A hint to that possible role came from studies in which the synthetic progestin medroxyprogesterone acetate was associated with an increased breast cancer risk in women under hormone replacement therapy. However, progestins have been also used for breast cancer treatment and to inhibit the growth of several experimental breast cancer models. More recently, PR have been shown to be regulators of estrogen receptor signaling. With all this information, the question is how can we target PR, and if so, which patients may benefit from such an approach? PR are not single unique molecules. Two main PR isoforms have been characterized, PRA and PRB, that exert different functions and the relative abundance of one isoform respect to the other determines the response of PR agonists and antagonists. Immunohistochemistry with standard antibodies against PR do not discriminate between isoforms. In this review, we summarize the current knowledge on the expression of both PR isoforms in mammary glands, in experimental models of breast cancer and in breast cancer patients, to better understand how the PRA/PRB ratio can be exploited therapeutically to design personalized therapeutic strategies.

Abstract
Abstract
Background: Invasive lobular breast carcinoma (ILC) accounts for 10-15% of breast cancers diagnosed annually. ILCs are more likely to be positive (90-95%) for ER compared to IDC (60-70%), and there is some evidence that endocrine treatment response might be different in patients with IDC vs ILC. We asked the question whether there were differences in ER protein steady state levels, and/or turn-over rates.
Methods: We utilized TCGA dataset to compare ESR1 mRNA and ER protein levels between ER+ ILC (n=137) and IDC (n=554). ER H-scores and ESR1 mRNA levels were analyzed from patients with ER+ ILC (n=143) and IDC (n=877) seen at UPMC Magee Women's Hospital. Correlation analysis with Pearson's (r) and Spearman's rank order coefficient (ρ) was used to study the relationship between mRNA and protein levels. Basal and ligand induced ESR1 mRNA and ER protein expression and turn-over were determined in a panel of estrogen responsive ER+ IDC (MCF-7, T47D and ZR75-1) and ILC (BCK-4, MDA-MB-134 VI (MM134), SUM44PE) cell lines to identify potential mechanisms that can contribute to differential expression of ERα protein.
Results: TCGA database analysis revealed significantly lower ESR1 mRNA and ER protein levels in ER+ ILC compared to IDC tumors. Analysis of data from our Magee hospital showed similar ER IHC H-scores for ER+ ILCs and IDCs despite having significantly lower ESR1 mRNA in ILC. In both the study sets, the correlation between ER mRNA and protein levels were found to be significantly weaker in ER+ ILC than IDC suggesting subtype specific increased synthesis and/or stability of the receptor protein. ILC cell lines MM134 and SUM44 have increased levels of ER protein compared to IDC cell lines. Estradiol decreased the levels and half-life of ER protein in all IDC cell lines tested. In MM134 and SUM44PE ILC cell lines, estradiol decreased the rate of degradation of ER and increased its half-life. In MM134 cells, treatment with estradiol induced a dose- and time-dependent increase in ER, which is associated with a sustained level of elevated phosphorylation at Ser 118.
Conclusions and ongoing/future studies: The estradiol-induced ER protein stability in a subset of ILC cell lines suggest a possible mechanism leading to weaker ER mRNA-protein correlation in ILC tumors. We currently do not know if and how this observation might be linked to antiestrogen response in ILC. We have recently initiated a TBCRC-supported trial in which we will compare the effect of different endocrine therapies in patients with ILC. Access to pre and post therapy samples will provide the opportunity to study ER levels and its downstream signaling as a function of antiestrogen treatment.

Abstract
Progesterone receptors (PR) are prognostic and predictive biomarkers in hormone‐dependent cancers. Two main PR isoforms have been described, PRB and PRA, that differ only in that PRB has 164 extra N‐terminal amino acids. It has been reported that several antibodies empirically exclusively recognize PRA in formalin‐fixed paraffin‐embedded (FFPE) tissues. To confirm these findings, we used human breast cancer xenograft models, T47D‐YA and ‐YB cells expressing PRA or PRB, respectively, MDA‐MB‐231 cells modified to synthesize PRB, and MDA‐MB‐231/iPRAB cells which can bi‐inducibly express either PRA or PRB. Cells were injected into immunocompromised mice to generate tumours exclusively expressing PRA or PRB. PR isoform expression was verified using immunoblots. FFPE samples from the same tumours were studied by immunohistochemistry using H‐190, clone 636, clone 16, and Ab‐6 anti‐PR antibodies, the latter exclusively recognizing PRB. Except for Ab‐6, all antibodies displayed a similar staining pattern. Our results indicate that clones 16, 636, and the H‐190 antibody recognize both PR isoforms. They point to the need for more stringency in evaluating the true specificity of purported PRA‐specific antibodies as the PRA/PRB ratio may have prognostic and predictive value in breast cancer.

Abstract
Introduction: Obesity affects more than one-third of adults in the U.S. and increases the risk for and worsens outcomes of individuals with cancer. Obese women have a greater risk of postmenopausal hormone-receptor positive breast cancer and are more likely to relapse after endocrine therapy. The prevailing dogma is that elevated circulating estrogen, produced by aromatase in abundant adipose tissue, drives breast cancer formation and progression. While estrogen is clearly an important factor in the obesity-breast cancer relationship, increasing the dose of aromatase inhibitors provides no added benefit to obese women with breast cancer. A switch from hormone- to growth factor-dependence has been implicated in the development of endocrine therapy resistance.
Hypothesis and Study Objective: We hypothesized that obese, postmenopausal women have elevated growth factor production in adipose tissue, which supports the progression of breast tumors that were previously dependent on estrogen. The purpose of our study was to develop a transplant-competent mouse model of obesity and postmenopausal breast cancer using estrogen receptor (ER) positive breast cancer patient-derived xenografts (PDX) from peri- and postmenopausal women (ages 45-71).
Methods: Rag1-null mice on the C57Bl/6 background were fed either a low fat (LFD) or high fat (HFD) diet for 10 weeks. Thermoneutral housing was used to facilitate development of the obese phenotype. Animal weights and percent body fat were monitored. After weight separation (approximately 10 weeks), mice were ovariectomized and implanted with an ER+ estrogen-dependent PDX derived from a 54 year old woman bilaterally into the orthotopic site (inguinal mammary fat pad). Mice were given slow release estrogen pellets and tumor growth was monitored. After 8 weeks of tumor growth, a subset of animals received estrogen withdrawal (EWD) to mimic the menopausal transition.
Results: HFD-fed mice weighed more, and had significantly increased body fat percentages, as well as subcutaneous, and gonadal fat pad weights, compared to LFD-fed mice. After EWD, tumors regressed in LFD-fed mice; however, the HFD prevented tumor regression in the absence of estrogen. Circulating estrogen levels in both LFD and HFD EWD groups were not significantly different. Tumor cellularity and Ki67 were greater in HFD- compared to LFD-fed mice in the absence of estrogen. Phospho-protein analysis of tumors suggested increased human epidermal growth factor receptor 2 (HER2) and fibroblast growth factor receptor (FGFR) signaling in HFD-EWD versus LFD-EWD mice.
Conclusions: We have developed a novel, transplant-competent mouse model of obesity and menopause using a specialized HFD and thermoneutral housing. Using this model, we determined that HFD supports the growth of a previously estrogen-dependent breast cancer PDX after EWD, potentially through increased signaling through HER2 and FGFR pathways. Our mouse model, in combination with PDX breast tumors, will offer novel insights into the relationships between obesity, menopause, and ER+ breast cancer progression.

Abstract
There is emerging interest in understanding the role of progesterone receptors (PRs) in breast cancer. The aim of this study was to investigate the proliferative effect of progestins and antiprogestins depending on the relative expression of the A (PRA) and B (PRB) isoforms of PR. In mifepristone (MFP)-resistant murine carcinomas antiprogestin responsiveness was restored by re-expressing PRA using demethylating agents and histone deacetylase inhibitors. Consistently, in two human breast cancer xenograft models, one manipulated to overexpress PRA or PRB (IBH-6 cells), and the other expressing only PRA (T47D-YA) or PRB (T47D-YB), MFP selectively inhibited the growth of PRA-overexpressing tumors and stimulated IBH-6-PRB xenograft growth. Furthermore, in cells with high or equimolar PRA/PRB ratios, which are stimulated to proliferate in vitro by progestins, and are inhibited by MFP, MPA increased the interaction between PR and the coactivator AIB1, and MFP favored the interaction between PR and the corepressor SMRT. In a PRB-dominant context in which MFP stimulates and MPA inhibits cell proliferation, the opposite interactions were observed. Chromatin immunoprecipitation assays in T47D cells in the presence of MPA or MFP confirmed the interactions between PR and the coregulators at the CCND1 and MYC promoters. SMRT downregulation by siRNA abolished the inhibitory effect of MFP on MYC expression and cell proliferation. Our results indicate that antiprogestins are therapeutic tools that selectively inhibit PRA-overexpressing tumors by increasing the SMRT/AIB1 balance at the CCND1 and MYC promoters.

Abstract
Existing crop monitoring programs determine the incidence and distribution of plant diseases and pathogens and assess the damage caused within a crop production region. These programs have traditionally used observed or predicted disease and pathogen data and environmental information to prescribe management practices that minimize crop loss. Monitoring programs are especially important for crops with broad geographic distribution or for diseases that can cause rapid and great economic losses. Successful monitoring programs have been developed for several plant diseases, including downy mildew of cucurbits, Fusarium head blight of wheat, potato late blight, and rusts of cereal crops. A recent example of a successful disease-monitoring program for an economically important crop is the soybean rust (SBR) monitoring effort within North America. SBR, caused by the fungus Phakopsora pachyrhizi, was first identified in the continental United States in November 2004. SBR causes moderate to severe yield losses globally. The fungus produces foliar lesions on soybean (Glycine max) and other legume hosts. P. pachyrhizi diverts nutrients from the host to its own growth and reproduction. The lesions also reduce photosynthetic area. Uredinia rupture the host epidermis and diminish stomatal regulation of transpiration to cause tissue desiccation and premature defoliation. Severe soybean yield losses can occur if plants defoliate during the mid-reproductive growth stages. The rapid response to the threat of SBR in North America resulted in an unprecedented amount of information dissemination and the development of a real-time, publicly available monitoring and prediction system known as the Soybean Rust-Pest Information Platform for Extension and Education (SBR-PIPE). The objectives of this article are (i) to highlight the successful response effort to SBR in North America, and (ii) to introduce researchers to the quantity and type of data generated by SBR-PIPE. Data from this system may now be used to answer questions about the biology, ecology, and epidemiology of an important pathogen and disease of soybean.

Abstract
In the last two decades, the urokinase-type plasminogen activator receptor (uPAR) has been implicated in a number of human pathologies such as cancer, bacterial infections, and paroxysmal nocturnal hemoglobinuria. The primary function of this glycolipid-anchored receptor is to focalize uPA-mediated plasminogen activation at the cell surface, which is accomplished by its high-affinity interaction with the growth factor-like domain of uPA. Detailed insights into the molecular basis underlying the interactions between uPAR and its two bona fide ligands, uPA and vitronectin, have been obtained recently by X-ray crystallography and surface plasmon resonance studies. Importantly, these structural studies also define possible druggable target sites in uPAR for small molecules and provide guidelines for the development of reporter groups applicable for non-invasive molecular imaging of uPAR expression in vivo by positron emission tomography. In this review, we will discuss recent advances in our perception of the structure-function relationships of uPAR ligation and how these may assist translational research in preclinical intervention studies of uPAR function.

Abstract
ZusammenfassungBei einer weiblichen Thüringerwald Ziege wurden eine generalisierte Osteopenie, Zwergwuchs, Anämie und ein Kupfermangel beobachtet. Das Tier stammte aus einer Hobbyhaltung mit etwa 30 klinisch unauffälligen weiteren Ziegen. Mittels röntgenologischer sowie computertomographischer und pathomorphologischer Untersuchung konnten eine verminderte Knochendichte und zahlreiche Frakturen mit fehlender oder lediglich geringgradiger Tendenz zur Kallusbildung nachgewiesen werden. Die Veraschung ausgewählter Knochen ergab im Vergleich zu zwei Kontrolltieren keinen Unterschied hinsichtlich des Kalzium- und Phosophorgehalts, was auf eine reguläre Mineralisierung der Knochenmatrix hindeutet. Vermutet wurde eine kupfermangelbedingte Osteogenesestörung.

Abstract
In a female Thuringian forest goat osteoporosis, dwarfism and anaemia were found. The animal was kept on a hobby farm with 30 further goats that did not show clinical signs. Radiological examination, computed tomographic imaging and pathological examination revealed reduced bone density and numerous fractures associated with limited or completely absent callus formation. Incineration of selected bones did not show any differences concerning the contents of calcium and phosphorus when compared to two control goats. Therefore, a regular mineralisation of the bone matrix was indicated. The dysfunction associated with the osteogenesis was assumed to be a copper deficiency.

Abstract
BACKGROUND AND STUDY AIMS Natural orifice transluminal endoscopic surgery (NOTES) has not yet been widely adopted because of lack of suitable equipment and fear of possible serious complications, especially in the mediastinum. We compared endoscopic with thoracoscopic esophageal wall repair after full-thickness esophageal wall incision (FTEI) and NOTES mediastinoscopy in healthy versus compromised animals. METHODS After FTEI for mediastinoscopy, 24 pigs (12 healthy, 12 compromised) were randomly allocated to endoscopic or thoracoscopic repair (each arm of each group, n = 6). They were kept alive for 3 months after endoscopic closure with prototype T-anchor suturing or thoracoscopic repair. RESULTS FTEI and mediastinoscopy were uneventful in all as was the initial repair of the incision (mean repair times: thoracoscopic 65 +/- 3.2 minutes, endoscopic 52 +/- 5.1 minutes; P < 0.0005). Post procedure, all 12 healthy pigs thrived with no complications or deaths. Two compromised animals died during the preparation period, and had to be replaced. In the compromised group, during endoscopic repair, 2 / 6 pigs suffered from gastric reflux into esophagus and mediastinum; the repair was completed and the pigs kept alive; one subsequently died of mediastinitis, and in the other, autopsy showed a gastric abscess in the lower mediastinum. Regarding the compromised thoracoscopic subgroup, one animal died from mediastinitis and all had abscesses at or near the incision sites. CONCLUSION Transesophageal mediastinoscopy could be performed equally well as the transthoracic procedure, both in healthy and compromised animals. However, on follow-up, the compromised animals had worse outcomes, with more complications and two deaths (17 %), one in each arm.

Abstract
Rhabdomyomas, defined as rare benign tumors of striated muscle, predominantly occur in the myocardium. In veterinary medicine, cardiac rhabdomyomas have rarely been reported but most frequently in pigs as an incidental finding. In the present case report, multiple circumscribed nodules found in the myocardium of 2 pigs were composed of large, vacuolated, glycogen-loaded cells. They expressed vimentin and desmin, neuron-specific enolase, and atrial natriuretic peptide. In addition, these cells expressed protein gene product 9.5, a marker for neuronal tissue and Purkinje fiber cells, in contrast to adjacent myocytes. The present findings-especially, the protein gene product 9.5 immunoreactivity-provide further evidence for the Purkinje fiber cell origin of the porcine myocardial proliferation. Therefore, the term purkinjeoma or purkinjeomatosis is proposed for cardiac rhabdomyoma in pigs.

Abstract
Borna disease (BD) was diagnosed in a 2-year-old male alpaca with a history of chronic suppressed sexual desire and acute stretching convulsions. Microscopical examination of the central nervous system revealed non-purulent meningoencephalitis with mononuclear perivascular cuffing. The diagnosis was confirmed by immunohistochemistry, in-situ hybridization, polymerase chain reaction (PCR) and sequencing of PCR products and alignment with known Borna disease virus sequences. Serological screening of the herd was performed. This is the first detailed report of naturally occurring BD in alpacas.

Abstract
BACKGROUND AND STUDY AIM Significant hemorrhage is a likely complication during natural orifice transluminal endoscopic surgery (NOTES) procedures. We tested three different prototype devices (involving endoscopic suturing, monopolar forceps, and forced argon plasma coagulation [FAPC]) for treatment of acute bleeding in a survival animal model. METHOD Using transgastric access (TGA) or transvaginal access (TVA), the endoscope was introduced into the peritoneal cavity and the first side-branch of the gastroepiploic artery (1aGE) was cut before the different hemostatic methods were applied. RESULTS Sutures could not be placed quickly enough before vision was inhibited. With monopolar forceps via TGA, the time to control bleeding was 10 - 140 s (mean 58 +/- 41 s) and with TVA it was 25 - 115 s (mean 57 +/- 26 s) (P = 0.54). It was not possible to stop the bleeding in 4/6 animals with TGA access and in 3/6 with TVA, and FAPC was needed to entirely stop it, taking a further 10 - 280 s (TGA mean 126 +/- 90 s, 34 - 242 s; TVA mean 152 +/- 61 s; P = 0.42). Using FAPC with TGA took 4 - 72 s (mean 28 +/- 20 s) to stop the bleeding, and 16 - 41 s (mean 24 +/- 9.4 s) with TVA ( P = 0.64). As the FAPC technique was relatively so much better, additional treatment of bleeding from the main gastroepiploic artery (aGe) was added in four cases for each method of access; this was successful but took significantly longer, with TGA at 10 - 260 s and with TVA at 30 - 172 s (means 98 +/- 82, 117 +/- 54 s, respectively; not significant). CONCLUSION Regarding the three methods tested, the new prototype FAPC device allowed hemostasis of notable bleeding from a major vessel even more quickly than forceps coagulation of a bleeding side branch. More studies are needed to further explore this potentially very valuable tool.

Abstract
The urokinase-type plasminogen activator receptor (uPAR) and its structural homologue C4.4A are multidomain members of the Ly6/uPAR/alpha-neurotoxin protein domain family. Both are glycosylphosphatidylinositol-anchored membrane glycoproteins encoded by neighbouring genes located on chromosome 19q13 in the human genome. The structural relationship between the two proteins is, however, not reflected at the functional level. Whereas uPAR has a well-established role in regulating and focalizing uPA-mediated plasminogen activation to the surface of those cells expressing the receptor, the biological function of C4.4A remains elusive. Nonetheless, both uPAR and C4.4A have been implicated in human pathologies such as wound healing and cancer. A large body of experimental evidence thus demonstrates that high levels of uPAR in resected tumour tissue as well as in plasma are associated with poor prognosis in a number of human cancers including colon adenocarcinoma and pulmonary squamous cell carcinoma. Targeting uPAR in experimental animal models has also provided promising results regarding the interference with pathogenic plasminogen activation. In the case of C4.4A, very recent data have demonstrated that high protein expression in tumour cells of non-small cell pulmonary adenocarcinomas is associated with a particularly severe disease progression. This review will evaluate structural-functional and disease-related aspects of uPAR and C4.4A with a view to possible pharmacological targeting strategies for therapy and for non-invasive bioimaging.

Abstract
Congenital brain malformations such as hydranencephaly as well as internal and external hydrocephalus combined with porencephaly were diagnosed in two calves which were born in spring 2008. In both calves bluetongue virus was detected by real-time PCR. Teratogenic pestiviruses were not found by serological, molecular or immunohistological methods. A causal relationship between the malformations and the bluetongue serotype 8 epidemic in 2007 has to be considered.

Abstract
Zusammenfassung
Ziel: Der Fallbericht beschreibt die klinischen Symptome und Befunde sowie die Ergebnisse der labordiagnostischen Untersuchungen von Ziegen mit Läsionen wie beim Bösartigen Katarrhalfieber (BKF). Falldarstellung: Drei Ziegen aus zwei Beständen, in denen auch Schafe gehalten wurden, entwickelten zentralnervöse Ausfallserscheinungen. Zwei lebend vorgestellte Ziegen wiesen meist eine erhöhte Körpertemperatur, Ataxie und Somnolenz auf. Eine Ziege zeigte einen Kopftremor und entwickelte schließlich Durchfall sowie eine Korneatrübung. Die andere fiel durch Drangwandern und verminderte Haltungs- und Stellreaktionen auf, später traten tonisch-klonische Krämpfe auf. Labordiagnostisch zeigten die Tiere Anämie, Hypoproteinämie, erhöhte Leberenzymaktivitäten, zeitweilig Azotämie und Lymphopenie sowie im Liquor eine Pleozytose. 22 bzw. 23 Tage nach Auftreten der ersten Symptome verendeten beide Ziegen. Die dritte, bereits euthanasiert eingelieferte Ziege wurde direkt pathologisch untersucht. In der Sektion fanden sich bei diesen Tieren Vergrößerungen von Lymphknoten, Milz und Leber. Histologisch zeigten sich hochgradige lymphohistiozytäre, teils fibrinoid-nekrotisierende Vaskulitiden in nahezu allen Organen, insbesondere Nieren, Milz, Lunge, Gehirn und Leber. Mittels PCR wurde in verschiedenen Organen DNA des ovinen Herpesvirus Typ 2 (OvHV-2) nachgewiesen. Schlussfolgerungen und klinische Relevanz: Das OvHV-2 ist ein im Schaf persistierendes Virus, das bei einer Infektion von Rindern zum BKF führen kann. Neben Schafen galten Ziegen bisher als reaktionslose Träger dieser Infektion. Der vorliegende Fall zeigt, dass bei Ziegen mit neurologischen Erkrankungen BKF differenzialdiagnostisch berücksichtigt werden muss. Die Diagnose lässt sich vor allem mithilfe pathomorphologischer und molekularbiologischer Untersuchungen bestätigen.

Abstract
A ventral meningomyelocele was found in a five week old, male German warmblood foal which exhibited central nervous symptoms. This rare malformation in horses may be caused by absent or defective fusion of vertebral bodies leading to herniation of the spinal cord and meninges with subsequent degenerative alterations of the spinal cord.

Abstract
The role of genetics in criminal behaviour can be assessed through family, twin and adoption studies. This paper discusses the major findings of adoption studies that have focused on criminal outcome. Results from adoption studies have consistently revealed a relationship between biological parent criminal behaviour and adoptee criminal outcome. This finding has been noted in the case of property crime, but not in the case of violent crime. Violent crime in adopted-away offspring is not related to violent crime in biological parents. Findings from the Danish Adoption Cohort suggest that violent crime may be genetically related to other types of behavioural deviance. In the Danish Adoption Cohort, there is an increased rate of schizophrenia in the adopted-away offspring of biological fathers who are convicted of violent crimes. This father violence-adoptee schizophrenia relationship cannot be accounted for by the potential confounding factors of rearing social status, age at transfer, knowledge of family history of crime, or biological parents' mental illness.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Trocar incisions are important sources of pain the first days after laparoscopic cholecystectomy. Radially expanding trocars may cause less pain than conventional cutting trocars. METHODS In a patient- and observer-blinded trial, 80 patients were randomized to undergo laparoscopic cholecystectomy using either radially expanding trocars (radial group) or conventional cutting trocars (cutting group). Two 10-mm and two 5-mm trocars were used in both treatment groups. All the patients received standardized anesthetic and analgesic treatment. The primary outcome was incisional pain. Pain was registered during mobilization using a visual analog scale (VAS) and a verbal rating scale (VRS) before and 6 h after the operation, and at postoperative days 1 and 2. The needs for a fascial incision to retract the gallbladder, active surgical hemostasis, and supplementary requirements of opioids during the hospital stay were registered. In addition, 2 days after the operation, the incidence and severity of suggilations at the trocar incisions were measured. RESULTS Data from 77 patients were available for statistical analysis. In the radial group, 23 patients needed fascial incision for gallbladder retraction compared with 11 patients in the cutting group (p = 0.006). No significant intergroup differences in VAS or VRS pain scores or any other variable were found. CONCLUSIONS The use of radially expanding trocars has no effect on incisional pain after laparoscopic cholecystectomy.

Abstract
The EU Water Framework Directive (WFD) requires an integrated approach to river basin management in order to meet environmental and ecological objectives. This paper presents concepts and full-scale application of an integrated modelling framework. The Ringkoebing Fjord basin is characterized by intensive agricultural production and leakage of nitrate constitute a major pollution problem with respect groundwater aquifers (drinking water), fresh surface water systems (water quality of lakes) and coastal receiving waters (eutrophication). The case study presented illustrates an advanced modelling approach applied in river basin management. Point sources (e.g. sewage treatment plant discharges) and distributed diffuse sources (nitrate leakage) are included to provide a modelling tool capable of simulating pollution transport from source to recipient to analyse the effects of specific, localized basin water management plans. The paper also includes a land rent modelling approach which can be used to choose the most cost-effective measures and the location of these measures. As a forerunner to the use of basin-scale models in WFD basin water management plans this project demonstrates the potential and limitations of comprehensive, integrated modelling tools.

Abstract
Wide spread powdery mildew infections on sugar beets were observed at the Southern Agricultural Experiment Station in Huntley, MT during September, 2003. Throughout the area, lower leaves were frequently heavily covered by the vegetative stage of the fungus with plants at the edge of the field having clearly visible abundant mature (black) and immature (brown) globose ascocarps on the leaf surfaces and stems. The fruiting structures had mostly branched appendages and were imbedded in the superficial mycelium. Their diameter ranged from 70 to 100 μm. Each ascocarp contained five to eight asci with one to four ascospores (mostly three) per ascus. Elliptical ascospores were hyaline and measured 20 to 25 μm long and 12 to 20 μm wide. On the basis of the descriptions given for isolates from Idaho and Colorado (1) and the usage of Erysiphe polygoni DC for powdery mildew on sugar beet in the United States, this isolate may be classified as E. polygoni DC. However, measurements taken show that ascocarps, asci, and ascospores also fall within the range of E. betae (Vanha) Weltz. as described by Weltzien (2). We strongly suggest that these species be compared by using rDNA analysis of the ITS region to determine whether they are separate species. If survival of the ascocarps and the viability and pathogenicity of the ascospores can be confirmed, epidemics of sugar beet powdery mildew could be understood as local and regional events that are not dependant on long distance dispersal of conidiospores. Abstract
In 2000, the thematic network ENTRANSFOOD was launched to assess four different topics that are all related to the testing or assessment of food containing or produced from genetically modified organisms (GMOs). Each of the topics was linked to a European Commission (EC)-funded large shared cost action (see http://www.entransfood.com). Since the exchange of genetic information through horizontal (lateral) gene transfer (HGT) might play a more important role, in quantity and quality, than hitherto imagined, a working group dealing with HGT in the context of food and feed safety was established. This working group was linked to the GMOBILITY project (GMOBILITY, 2003) and the results of the deliberations are laid down in this review paper. HGT is reviewed in relation to the potential risks of consuming food or feed derived from transgenic crops. First, the mechanisms for obtaining transgenic crops are described. Next, HGT mechanisms and its possible evolutionary role are described. The use of marker genes is presented in detail as a special case for genes that may pose a risk. Furthermore, the exposure to GMOs and in particular to genetically modified (GM) deoxyribonucleic acid (DNA) is discussed as part of the total risk assessment. The review finishes off with a number of conclusions related to GM food and feed safety. The aim of this paper is to provide a comprehensive overview to assist risk assessors as well as regulators and the general public in understanding the safety issues related to these mechanisms.

Abstract
BACKGROUND The aim of the study was to evaluate endoscopic ultrasonography (EUS) as a single method for diagnosing cholecystolithiasis in patients with a clinical suspicion of cholecystolithiasis, but with a normal transabdominal ultrasonography (TUS). METHODS A prospective study was performed on patients with biliary type of colic and normal US of the gallbladder. All patients had at least one normal TUS examination (mean 2.1, range 1-5) performed by an experienced radiologist. All patients were subsequently examined with EUS. EUS examination was performed with either a mechanical radial scanning echo-endoscope (Olympus GF-UM20) or a linear echo-endoscope (Pentax FG32-UA or FG34-UA). Patients in whom EUS demonstrated cholecystolithiasis were offered laparoscopic cholecystectomy within 2 weeks. RESULTS A total of 35 patients (31 F and 4 M) were included. In 18 out of 35 (52.4%) patients cholecystolithiasis was diagnosed by EUS. In 15 out of 17 patients the EUS diagnosis was verified by surgery. At follow-up after 12 months, 13 of the 15 patients (87%) with verified gallbladder stones had no abdominal discomfort, whereas 2 patients (13%) complained of persistent and unchanged abdominal pain. CONCLUSION EUS seems to be a promising imaging method in the detection of microlithiasis in the gallbladder in patients with clear biliary colic and normal transabdominal US.

Abstract
The purpose of this study was to evaluate the haemodynamic and metabolic effects of captopril during reperfusion of pig hearts following 360 min global hypothermic cardioplegia and storage (HCS). The hearts were perfused with one litre of cold crystalloid cardioplegia (Bretschneider solution no. 3), excised and stored in saline at 4 degrees C for 360 min. The hearts were then reperfused with blood in a modified Langendorff model for 60 min. Left ventricular function, myocardial blood flow, and arteriovenous differences in oxygen, glucose and lactate were monitored intraoperatively and during reperfusion. Two groups of hearts were studied. Group I (captopril treated, n = 9): the pigs were pre-medicated with increasing oral doses of captopril for 3 weeks (12.5 mg-150 mg daily) and an intravenous dose (25 mg) upon arrival at the laboratory. Captopril was added to the cardioplegia (1000 microg/l) and to the reperfusion media (1000 microg/l). Group II (controls, n = 8): the pigs were given no premedication, captopril-free cardioplegia and the hearts were reperfused with captopril-free blood. Captopril increased myocardial oxygen and glucose extraction during reperfusion (p < 0.05 for both) while lactate remained unchanged after 360 min HCS. Treatments with captopril increased developed left ventricular pressure (DLVP) and relaxation (-dP/dtmax) during reperfusion (p < 0.05 for both), while contractility (+dP/dtmax) was unchanged. Heart rate was reduced in captopril-treated hearts (p < 0.05) while myocardial blood flow (MBF) was similar in the two groups. Captopril administration prior to and during HCS and postcardioplegic reperfusion improves oxygen and glucose extraction in large spontaneously beating porcine hearts during reperfusion. The underlying mechanisms seem to involve metabolic modulation, since myocardial uptake of oxygen and glucose was increased in the absence of changes in myocardial blood flow.

Abstract
To investigate relationships between birth season and biological family history in schizophrenia, this study used a sample of schizophrenics that had the advantages of (a) particularly thorough diagnostic assessments of schizophrenics' relatives, including information from direct interviews as well as chart reviews, and (b) schizophrenic probands who were adopted at early age, mitigating the usual confounding of genetic and postnatal environmental influences of the family. Adopted schizophrenics with no biological family history of schizophrenia-spectrum disorders were significantly more likely to be born in winter months than were either (a) their own biological relatives, including their sibs and half-sibs, (b) schizophrenics with a positive family history for schizophrenia-spectrum disorders, or (c) people in the general population. Family-history-positive schizophrenics and their schizophrenic relatives were, in turn, significantly less likely than their own non-schizophrenic biological relatives to be born in the winter; schizophrenics in these families tended to be born in the milder-weather seasons, particularly the spring and fall. Results suggest that environmental factors associated with winter birth may be etiologically important in schizophrenia, particularly for cases in which familial liability factors are weak. By contrast, a familial, probably genetic, liability factor may be especially important in schizophrenics born in mild weather.

Abstract
The main purpose is to investigate whether stress is a relevant category in Greenlandic word prosody. I focus on tonal and durational parameters. The data material consists of word lists read aloud seven times by two subjects. The main findings are: (1) The prosodic characteristics of words can be explained in either tonal or durational terms. (2) The four different syllable types (of different 'weight') are distinguished in durational terms; further, there appears to be only a tripartite system of short, long and overlong. (3) There are intra-syllabic as well as inter-syllabic rhythmical adjustments. It is concluded that Greenlandic prosody does not include an autonomous stress category, either tonal or durational parameters alone will do. And although Greenlandic has distinctive quantity, there is room for considerable durational variation of segments.

Allergen-specific CD4+ T lymphocytes are activated at extremely low allergen concentrations in vivo as a result of serum-facilitated allergen presentation (S-FAP). It is not clear at present if specific allergy vaccination (SAV) has an effect on this mechanism. Here we show that birch allergen-specific serum-IgE facilitates the presentation of Bet v 1, the major birch pollen allergen, to Bet v 1-specific CD4+ T lymphocytes by a factor of >100. This process is CD23 mediated, could be detected in sera from the majority of birch-allergic patients, and was clearly dose dependent. S-FAP of Bet v 1 was inhibited in patients undergoing long-term birch SAV, but not by sera from patients undergoing grass SAV, indicating that birch-specific Abs are involved. This resulted in decreased proliferation and IL-4, IL-5, IL-10, and IFN-γ production of Bet v 1-specific T cells. The inhibition was already noted after 3–9 mo of SAV and could not be solely explained by increased serum levels of birch-specific IgG4. When IgG- and IgA/IgM-containing fractions of long-term SAV sera were used to inhibit S-FAP, only IgG-containing fractions were shown to inhibit S-FAP. These results indicate that blocking IgG Abs induced by SAV inhibits the occurrence of S-FAP at very low allergen concentrations, resulting in significantly higher allergen threshold levels to obtain T cell proliferation and cytokine production and thus allergen-induced late-phase responses.
