Abstract
Background Data comparing the populations’ mental health from before, during and after the pandemic is needed. We aim to assess the risk factors for the first-onset and persistence of major depressive disorder (MDD) and suicidal thoughts and behaviours (STB) during the first year of the pandemic among the Spanish general population. Methods Cohort study through two online surveys from before the pandemic (N = 2,005, October/November 2019) and 12-months later (N = 1,357) on an adult Spanish, nationally representative, population-based sample. Multiple logistic regression models were used to assess the association between socio-demographic, COVID-19 related variables and healthcare received during the pandemic with the onset and persistence of MDD and STB. Results Women have more than 3-fold risk for the onset (OR 3.18; CI95% 1.40 -7.22) and persistence (OR 8.62; CI95% 1.74-42.48) of MDD. Studying and working at the same time (OR 10.13; CI95% 2.17-47.35) and having close relatives/friends with COVID-19 infection (OR 14.84; CI95% 1.91-115.18) or death (OR 5.26; CI95% 1.56-17.73) due to COVID-19 are risk factors for MDD onset. Sick-leave (OR 17.19; CI95% 2.65-112.56) and unemployment (OR 7.01; CI95% 1.85-26.43) increased the risk for MDD persistence. Death of friends/colleagues due to COVID-19 (OR 8.40; CI95% 1.47-48.07) increased the risk for STB onset, and being on sick-leave (OR 7.91; CI95% 1.80-34.66) for STB persistence. Conclusions During the COVID-19 pandemic, women were consistently more at risk of having worse mental health than men. Direct and indirect consequences caused or aggravated by the pandemic are common risk factors for the increased risk for the onset and persistence of both MDD and STB. Identification of high-risk subgroups and risk factors for MDD and STB among the Spanish general population will allow the developing and implementing of evidence-driven strategies for reducing the long-term impact of the pandemic in populations’ mental health. Key messages • The pandemic consequences, whether due to having had COVID-19, having close people affected or who have died from the infection and the social consequences increase the risk for worse mental health. • Evidence-driven strategies for reducing the long-term impact of the pandemic in populations’ mental health should be a public health priority.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Contact with nature may have a key role in child brain development. Recent observational studies have reported improvements in children's neuropsychological development and mental health associated with greenness exposure. In a rapidly urbanizing word, researchers, policymakers, healthcare workers and urban planners need to work together to elaborate evidence-based policies and interventions to increase the availability of quality green space with the potential to enhance childhood development. OBJECTIVE To review the observational evidence assessing the effect of exposure to greenness on children's neuropsychological development and mental health. METHODS The protocol for the review was preregistered at PROSPERO (CRD42020213838). The Navigation Guide systematic review methodology was followed. Search strategies were formulated and adapted to each database. Searches were performed in PubMed, Scopus, Web of Science and EBSCO's GreenFILE on October 5, 2021. Additional articles were further identified by hand-searching reference lists of included papers. RESULTS A systematic search of 4 databases identified 621 studies, of which 34 were included in the review. The studies included investigated diverse domains within neuropsychological development and mental health, such as attention, working memory, intelligence, cognitive development, academic performance, well-being, attention-deficit/hyperactivity disorder symptoms, and behavior. Most of the studies were rated as having high or probably high risk of bias in the assessment. DISCUSSION Although nearly all studies showed a positive association between greenness exposure and the outcomes studied, the heterogeneity in the methods used to assess exposure and the diversity of domains within each main outcome has made it difficult to draw clear conclusions. Future studies should adopt a longitudinal design to confirm the causality of the associations and include measures to determine which characteristics of greenness have the greatest influence on each domain. Researchers should also try to explore pathways linking exposure to greenness with the neuropsychological development and mental health, by implementing mechanistic studies.

Abstract
AIM Plant functional groups are widely used in community ecology and earth system modelling to describe trait variation within and across plant communities. However, this approach rests on the assumption that functional groups explain a large proportion of trait variation among species. We test whether four commonly used plant functional groups represent variation in six ecologically important plant traits. LOCATION Tundra biome. TIME PERIOD Data collected between 1964 and 2016. MAJOR TAXA STUDIED 295 tundra vascular plant species. METHODS We compiled a database of six plant traits (plant height, leaf area, specific leaf area, leaf dry matter content, leaf nitrogen, seed mass) for tundra species. We examined the variation in species-level trait expression explained by four traditional functional groups (evergreen shrubs, deciduous shrubs, graminoids, forbs), and whether variation explained was dependent upon the traits included in analysis. We further compared the explanatory power and species composition of functional groups to alternative classifications generated using post hoc clustering of species-level traits. RESULTS Traditional functional groups explained significant differences in trait expression, particularly amongst traits associated with resource economics, which were consistent across sites and at the biome scale. However, functional groups explained 19% of overall trait variation and poorly represented differences in traits associated with plant size. Post hoc classification of species did not correspond well with traditional functional groups, and explained twice as much variation in species-level trait expression. MAIN CONCLUSIONS Traditional functional groups only coarsely represent variation in well-measured traits within tundra plant communities, and better explain resource economic traits than size-related traits. We recommend caution when using functional group approaches to predict tundra vegetation change, or ecosystem functions relating to plant size, such as albedo or carbon storage. We argue that alternative classifications or direct use of specific plant traits could provide new insights for ecological prediction and modelling.

Abstract
To improve the understanding of the piscirickettsiosis pathogenesis, the in vivo apoptosis modulation of peritoneal macrophages and lymphocytes was studied in juvenile Salmo salar intraperitoneally injected with Piscirickettsia salmonis. Five fish were sampled at post-exposure days 1, 5, 8 (preclinical), 20 (clinical) and 40 (post-clinical period of the disease), and the leucocytes of their coelomic washings were analysed by flow cytometry (using the JC-1 cationic dye), TUNEL and cytology to detect apoptotic cells. A selective and temporal pattern of apoptosis modulation by P. salmonis infection was observed. Apoptosis in lymphocytes was not affected, whereas it was inhibited in macrophages but only during the preclinical stage of the induced piscirickettsiosis. Hence, it is postulated that P. salmonis inhibits macrophage apoptosis at the beginning of the disease development to survive, multiply and probably be transported inside these phagocytes; once this process is complete, macrophage apoptosis is no longer inhibited, thus facilitating the exit of the bacteria from the infected cells for continuing their life cycle.

Abstract
La diversidad de los genes del complejo principal de histocompatibilidad (MHC) es clave en su función en la presentación de antígenos en el sistema inmune. La tipificación indirecta basada en microsatélites (STR) del MHC aporta información de la variabilidad genética y de la estructura poblacional y es una estrategia para conocer procesos selectivos y evolutivos. Con el fin de caracterizar una población de caballos de raza Árabe, se identificaron los haplotipos del MHC sobre la base de tres microsatélites (UM011, DRB2-STR2 y COR112) abarcando una región de ~1Mpb. El ADN genómico se extrajo de sangre y pelo de 30 caballos de cinco haras de la provincia de Buenos Aires y los STRs se amplificaron con cebadores fluorescentes para tipificar en secuenciador automático. Seestimaron parámetros poblacionales y de diversidad y la detección de haplotipos se realizó mediante análisis de segregación y con el programa de reconstrucción de haplotipos PHASE. Se reconocieron 24 haplotipos; entre ellos, 12 se verificaron por segregación en los registros de pedigree del StudBook. Los resultados obtenidos demostraron la existencia de ligamiento con alelos conocidos de genes de clase II del equine leukocyte antigen (ELA) y la cantidad de haplotipos identificada permitió expandir la valoración de la diversidad del MHC equino. Esta metodología constituye una herramienta de utilidad y un método alternativo para la tipificación del MHC en linajes de caballos y en estudios poblacionales relacionados con la inmunidad.

Abstract
Evidence of cerebellar abiotrophy (CA) was found in a six-month-old Arabian filly with signs of incoordination, head tremor, wobbling, loss of balance and falling over, consistent with a cerebellar lesion. Normal hematology profile blood test and cerebrospinal fluid analysis excluded infectious encephalitis, and serological testing for Sarcocystis neurona was negative. The filly was euthanized. Postmortem X-ray radiography of the cervical cephalic region identified not abnormalities, discounting spinal trauma. The histopathological analysis of serial transverse cerebellar sections by electron microscopy revealed morphological characteristics of apoptotic cells with pyknotic nuclei and degenerate mitochondria, cytoplasmic condensation and areas with absence of Purkinje cells, matching with CA histopathological characteristics. The indirect DNA test for CA was positive in the filly, and DNA test confirmed the CA carrier state in the parents and the recessive inheritance of the disease. To our knowledge this is the first report of a CA case in Argentina.

Abstract
The dynamics of disseminated neoplasia (DN) affecting cockles Cerastoderma edule (L.) in Galicia was addressed at individual and population levels. Early stage of DN was characterized by isolated neoplastic cells occurring in branchial vessels or in the connective tissue of gills, mantle, gonad or digestive gland. As disease progressed, the neoplastic cells appeared loose in foci and became widely distributed throughout the organs. In advanced stages, the connective tissue of most organs was infiltrated by neoplastic cells, which displaced normal cells, leading to the loss of the normal tissue/organ architecture. Host defence reaction was occasionally observed. A field survey performed for 7 years, in two cockle beds located in different Galician Rías, showed that DN is a hyperendemic disease usually present all year-round at high prevalence in adult cockles but with annual prevalence minima in spring likely due to the death of heavily affected cockles, concurrently with gonad ripeness-spawning. DN was detected in the cockles ranging from 10 to 39 mm in size; the highest DN prevalence and severity corresponded to the cockles of intermediate size/age (22-29 mm/0.7-1 year old). Sex did not appear to influence DN occurrence. An inhibitory effect of DN on cockle gametogenesis was detected.

Abstract
Lingual tonsil hypertrophy can cause varying degrees of airway obstruction and is considered a risk factor for difficult mask ventilation and tracheal intubation. We report a case of unexpected difficult airway in a patient with unknown lingual tonsil hypertrophy that was solved with the use of the GlideScope video laryngoscope.

Abstract
The ingestion of dietary lipids leads to oxidative stress. This postprandial oxidative stress may potentiate the adverse effects of postprandial hyperlipidaemia. Proanthocyanidins have been shown to alleviate oxidative stress and hypertriglyceridaemia associated with the postprandial state. Additionally, omega-3 polyunsaturated fatty acids (PUFAs) also have beneficial effects on lipoprotein metabolism and oxidative stress. The present study was designed to investigate the possible additive effects in liver of an acute dose of grape seed proanthocyanidins extract (GSPE) and oil rich in docosahexaenoic acid (DHA-OR) on lipidic postprandial oxidative stress in Wistar rats. GSPE+DHA-OR modifies the hepatic antioxidant enzymatic activities (GST and GPx), clearly showing that this combination increases the detoxification of postprandial xenobiotics via the GST action mediated hepatic GSH conjugation. In conclusion, this study provides evidence that the combination of GSPE and DHA-OR ameliorate the transient imbalance between the lipid hydroperoxide level and antioxidant status related to a lipidic postprandial state.

Abstract
The excessive production of reactive oxygen species has been implicated in several pathologies, such as atherosclerosis, obesity, hypertension and insulin resistance. Docosahexaenoic acid (DHA) may protect against the above mentioned diseases, but paradoxically the main DHA treated pathologies are also associated with increased ROS levels. Therefore, the aim of this study was to explore if in vitro DHA supplementation may increase the sensitivity of cells to tert-BHP induced oxidative stress, and if the green tea polyphenol epigallocatechin-3-gallate (EGCG) is able to correct such detrimental effect. We found that DHA-enriched cells exacerbate ROS generation, decrease cell viability and increase Nrf2 nuclear translocation and HO-1 expression. Interestingly, cellular EGCG is able to counteract oxidative damage from either tert-BHP or DHA-enriched cells. In consequence, our results suggest that in a ROS enriched environment DHA could not always be beneficial for cells and can be considered a double-edged sword in terms of its benefits vs. risks. In this sense, our results propose that the supplementation with potent antioxidant molecules could be an appropriate strategy to reduce the risks related with the DHA supplementation in an oxidative stress-associated condition.

Abstract
Piscirickettsia salmonis is the aetiological agent of piscirickettsiosis, a disease which affects a variety of teleost species and that is particularly severe in salmonid fish. Bacterial-free supernatants, obtained from cultures of three isolates of Piscirickettsia salmonis, were inoculated in Atlantic salmon, Salmo salar L., and in three continuous cell lines in an effort to determine the presence of secretion of extracellular products (ECPs) by this microorganism. Although steatosis was found in some liver samples, no mortalities or clinical signs occurred in the inoculated fish. Clear cytotoxicity was observed after inoculation in the cell lines CHSE-214 and ASK, derived from salmonid tissues, but not in MDBK, which is of mammalian origin. The degree of cytotoxicity of the ECPs was different among the P. salmonis isolates tested. The isolate that evidenced the highest cytotoxicity in its ECPs exhibited only an intermediate virulence level after challenging fish with bacterial suspensions of the three P. salmonis isolates. Almost complete inhibition of the cytotoxic activity of ECPs was seen after proteinase K treatment, indicating their peptidic nature, and a total preclusion of the cytotoxicity was shown after their incubation at 50 °C for 30 min. Results show that P. salmonis can produce ECPs and at least some of them are thermolabile exotoxins that probably play a role in the pathogenesis of piscirickettsiosis.

Abstract
South American camelids comprise the wild species guanaco and vicuña and their respective domestic relatives llama and alpaca. The aim of the present study was to determine by DNA analysis to which of these species belong a herd of camelids confiscated from a llama breeder but alleged to be alpacas by the prosecution, and to evaluate the usefulness of mitochondrial and autosomal DNA markers to solve judicial cases involving camelid taxa. Cytochrome b and cytochrome oxidase I mitochondrial genes and 7 STR were analyzed in 25 confiscated samples. Mitochondrial results were inconclusive because 18 of the sequestered samples presented haplotypes that corresponded to the guanaco haplogroup and the remaining seven belonged to a vicuña linage. Microsatellite data of casework samples and llama reference samples revealed different genetic profiles by the presence of private alleles at two microsatellites suggesting that the confiscated animals could be alpaca, or at least alpaca hybrids instead of pure llama.

Abstract
The aim of this study was to determine the effect of chronic dietary supplementation of a grape seed proanthocyanidin extract (GSPE) at a dose of 35 mg/kg body weight on energy metabolism and mitochondrial function in the skeletal muscle of Zucker obese rats. Three groups of 10 animals each were used: lean Fa/fa lean group (LG) rats, a control fa/fa obese group (OG) of rats, and an obese supplemented fa/fa proanthocyanidins obese group (POG) of rats, which were supplemented with a dose of 35 mg GSPE/kg of body weight/day during the 68 days of experimentation. Skeletal muscle energy metabolism was evaluated by determining enzyme activities, key metabolic gene expression, and immunoblotting of oxidative phosphorylation complexes. Mitochondrial function was analyzed by high-resolution respirometry using both a glycosidic and a lipid substrate. In muscle, chronic GSPE administration decreased citrate synthase activity, the amount of oxidative phosphorylation complexes I and II, and Nrf1 gene expression, without any effects on the mitochondrial oxidative capacity. This situation was associated with lower reactive oxygen species (ROS) generation. Additionally, GSPE administration enhanced the ability to oxidize pyruvate, and it also increased the activity of enzymes involved in oxidative phosphorylation including cytochrome c oxidase. There is strong evidence to suggest that GSPE administration stimulates mitochondrial function in skeletal muscle specifically by increasing the capacity to oxidize pyruvate and contributes to reduced muscle ROS generation in obese Zucker rats.

Abstract
We investigated the association of equine arteritis virus (EAV) infection and three short tandem repeat (STR) polymorphisms located within or in close proximity to equine lymphocyte antigen (ELA) region. We used a case-control design as a first approach before proceeding to select candidate genes. One hundred and sixty-five Silla Argentino horses were taken in 2002 from positive serological detections of EAV in Argentina, to determine whether STR genotypes were correlated to genetic susceptibility to EVA. Allele frequency distribution did not show significant differences between both groups (P = 0.0781). However, in particular alleles, Fisher exact test and odds ratio calculations showed significant values >1 for TKY08 and LEX52, and <1 for UM011, TKY08, LEX52 and VHL20. Interestingly, TKY08 STR is located in ELA class I region.

Abstract
Proanthocyanidin consumption might reduce the risk of developing several pathologies, such as inflammation, oxidative stress and cardiovascular diseases. The beneficial effects of proanthocyanidins are attributed to their antioxidant properties, although they also can modulate gene expression at the transcriptional level. Little is known about the effect of proanthocyanidins on mitochondrial function and energy metabolism. In this context, the objective of this study was to determine the effect of an acute administration of grape seed proanthocyanidin extract (GSPE) on mitochondrial function and energy metabolism. To examine this effect, male Wistar rats fasted for fourteen hours, and then they were orally administered lard oil containing GSPE or were administered lard oil only. Liver, muscle and brown adipose tissue (BAT) were used to study enzymatic activity and gene expression of proteins related to energetic metabolism. Moreover, the gastrocnemius muscle and BAT mitochondria were used to perform high-resolution respirometry. The results showed that, after 5 h, the GSPE administration significantly lowers plasma triglycerides, free fatty acids, glycerol and urea concentrations. In skeletal muscle, GSPE lowers FATP1 mRNA levels and increases mitochondrial oxygen consumption, using pyruvate as the substrate, suggesting a promotion of glycosidic metabolism. Furthermore, GSPE increased the genetic expression of key genes in energy metabolism such as peroxisome proliferator-activated receptor gamma, coactivator 1 alpha (PGC1α), and modulated the enzyme activity of proteins, which are involved in the citric acid cycle and electron transport chain (ETC) in BAT. In conclusion, GSPE affects mainly the skeletal muscle and BAT mitochondria, increasing their oxidative capacity rapidly after acute supplementation.

Abstract
AIM To investigate the cost-effectiveness of sunitinib (50 mg/day, schedule 4/2) vs. best supportive care (BSC) in patients with cytokine-refractory metastatic renal cell carcinoma (mRCC), from the perspective of the Spanish National Health Service. MATERIAL AND METHODS A Markov model compared the cost-effectiveness (taking into account drugs; medical visits; laboratory tests; X-rays; terminal care; adverse event management) of sunitinib and BSC across three disease states: no progression, survival with progression and death from mRCC or other causes. RESULTS The monthly incremental cost-effectiveness ratio (ICER) values for sunitinib treatment were €6073/progression-free survival month, €25,199/life years and €34,196/quality-adjusted life years (QALY) gained. In 95% of cases, the ICER/QALY values were below the accepted €45,000/QALY threshold. Efficacy and cost of sunitinib had the greatest impact on cost-effectiveness. CONCLUSION Sunitinib has a good cost-effectiveness profile in mRCC. The cost per life year and QALY gained is affordable according to current effectiveness thresholds in developed countries.

Abstract
High prevalence of disseminated neoplasia has been found in cockles Cerastoderma edule of Galicia (NW Spain). Disseminated neoplasia has been associated with high mortalities of various bivalve species. In vertebrates, proteins such as p53 and heat shock proteins (HSPs) play important roles in carcinogenesis. The protein p53 has been detected in neoplastic cells of bivalve molluscs such as Mytilus edulis, Mytilus trossulus, Mya arenaria, Spisula solidissima, Crassostrea rhizophorae and Crassostrea gigas. In this study, western blotting analyses were used to test the expression of Hsp70, Hsp90 and mutant p53 proteins in the cells and plasma of the haemolymph of cockles showing various intensities of neoplasia. Disseminated neoplasia was previously diagnosed by examination of stained haemolymph monolayers with light microscopy. In the present study, mutant p53 was detected in haemolymph cells of cockles diagnosed as affected by moderate and heavy neoplasia intensity, whereas it was not detected in cockles with either no or light neoplasia. The higher the neoplasia intensity, the higher the levels of Hsp70 and Hsp90. These proteins were not found in plasma. The results reveal the possible association between p53 and HSPs in neoplastic cells of cockles, which could prevent p53 from carrying out its functions, as occurs in human cancers.

Abstract
Equine viral arteritis (EVA) is a contagious viral disease that frequently causes mild or subclinical infections in adult horses. Only one EAV serotype has been described. However, there are differences in antigenicity, pathogenicity and neutralization characteristics of virus field strains. The interaction of two viral proteins, GP5 and M, is critical for infectivity and amino acid changes in the GP5 sequences have an effect on the neutralizing phenotype, regardless the effects of other viral proteins. The objective of the present study was to evaluate the neutralization phenotypes of the 5 unique Argentine EAV strains reported and to compare them with the neutralization phenotypes of the EAV-UCD reference strain, with special emphasis on the analysis of M and GP5 proteins. The strains had a similar neutralization phenotype pattern when anti-EAV serum, derived from EAV seropositive horses, was used in the analysis. Meanwhile, low titers were observed when equine polyclonal anti-EAV reference sera were used in the assay. Argentine strains have almost the same amino acid substitutions, with the exception of LP01 strain, that mainly involves the first variable region V1, especially in neutralization sites B and C. However, they are fairly different from the EAV-UCD strain. Nevertheless, the nucleotide and amino acid differences observed among the Argentine strains LP02/R, LP02/C, LP02/P and LP-LT-ARG did not show any variations in the neutralization phenotype.

Abstract
BACKGROUND AND AIMS Genome size is a function, and the product, of cell volume. As such it is contingent on ecological circumstance. The nature of 'this ecological circumstance' is, however, hotly debated. Here, we investigate for angiosperms whether stomatal size may be this 'missing link': the primary determinant of genome size. Stomata are crucial for photosynthesis and their size affects functional efficiency. METHODS Stomatal and leaf characteristics were measured for 1442 species from Argentina, Iran, Spain and the UK and, using PCA, some emergent ecological and taxonomic patterns identified. Subsequently, an assessment of the relationship between genome-size values obtained from the Plant DNA C-values database and measurements of stomatal size was carried out. KEY RESULTS Stomatal size is an ecologically important attribute. It varies with life-history (woody species < herbaceous species < vernal geophytes) and contributes to ecologically and physiologically important axes of leaf specialization. Moreover, it is positively correlated with genome size across a wide range of major taxa. CONCLUSIONS Stomatal size predicts genome size within angiosperms. Correlation is not, however, proof of causality and here our interpretation is hampered by unexpected deficiencies in the scientific literature. Firstly, there are discrepancies between our own observations and established ideas about the ecological significance of stomatal size; very large stomata, theoretically facilitating photosynthesis in deep shade, were, in this study (and in other studies), primarily associated with vernal geophytes of unshaded habitats. Secondly, the lower size limit at which stomata can function efficiently, and the ecological circumstances under which these minute stomata might occur, have not been satisfactorally resolved. Thus, our hypothesis, that the optimization of stomatal size for functional efficiency is a major ecological determinant of genome size, remains unproven.

Abstract
OBJECTIVES To evaluate long-term intraocular pressure results after trabeculectomy in low risk patients. Therefore differences among glaucoma type and previous medical treatment will be evaluated. METHODS A retrospective follow-up study, ranging between 3 and 20 years, was carried out on 965 trabeculectomy surgeries without any surgical- failure factor. Follow-up was carried-out one day, one week, one month, three months, six months and annually after surgery until the last visit. Primary open angle (POAG) (671 eyes), pseudoexfoliative (PSXG) (156 eyes) and chronic closure angle glaucomas (CCAG) (138 eyes) were included. IOP under 21 Hg mm without medical treatment was considered absolute success, relative success included those eyes with pressures under 21 and one or two daily antiglaucomatous drops. RESULTS Mean IOP ranged between 15 and 17 Hg mm. Mean IOP decreased from 30.7 to 37.4%. Relative success ten years after surgery was better in POAG; whereas absolute success resulted to be similar in POAG and PSXG. The group of patients less treated before surgery showed greater rate of absolute and relative success. CONCLUSIONS Trabeculectomy alone is an efficient technique in long-term tensional control for uncomplicated eyes. The group of patients less treated before surgery and POAG showed greater rate success.

Abstract
CASE REPORTS We present four cases: two males with Horner Syndrome, who were diagnosed by means of apraclonidine 0.5% and cocaine 4% tests respectively. Two children with anisocoria, one of whom had Horner Syndrome confirmed with apraclonidine 1% and the other, in whom an apraclonidine test ruled out this syndrome but in whom pilocarpine 0.125% confirmed Adie's pupil. DISCUSSION Apraclonidine drops (1% and 0.5%) may aid in the diagnosis of Horner Syndrome and are easier to obtain than cocaine.

Abstract
The polymorphism of equine lymphocyte antigen (ELA) class II DRA gene had been detected by polymerase chain reaction-single-strand conformational polymorphism (PCR-SSCP) and reference strand-mediated conformation analysis. These methodologies allowed to identify 11 ELA-DRA exon 2 sequences, three of which are widely distributed among domestic horse breeds. Herein, we describe the development of a pyrosequencing-based method applicable to ELA-DRA typing, by screening samples from eight different horse breeds previously typed by PCR-SSCP. This sequence-based method would be useful in high-throughput genotyping of major histocompatibility complex genes in horses and other animal species, making this system interesting as a rapid screening method for animal genotyping of immune-related genes.

Abstract
AIM To estimate the cost-effectiveness (C-E) of pregabalin (PGB) or levetiracetam (LEV) relative to standard therapy (ST) as add-on anti-epileptic therapy in patients with partial refractory epilepsy in Spain. PATIENTS AND METHODS Using stochastic simulation techniques, we estimated the C-E of PGB (300 mg/day) and LEV (2,000 mg/day) in a hypothetical cohort of 1,000 patients (vs ST). The model used data of efficacy and safety from two randomized controlled clinical trials. Direct medical costs (caused by handling of the disease and the adverse events were estimated using year-2007 prices. Model outcomes included number of additional seizure-free days (over one year), adverse events and quality adjusted life-years (QALYs). We calculated the incremental cost-effectiveness ratio (ICER) per additional seizure-free day and QALY gained. RESULTS Compared with ST, treatment with PGB yielded an estimated 43.3 +/- 4.8 (mean +/- standard error) additional seizure-free days, and a gain of 0.04 +/- 0.0006 QALYs over one year. Comparable results for LEV vs ST were 24.3 +/- 6.2 and 0.025 +/- 0.007 QALYs, respectively. The annual total cost (in euros) per patient was 1,843 with PGB, 3,018 with LEV and 897 with ST. Mean ICER for PGB vs ST were 22 euros (95% CI = 19-27) per additional seizure-free day, and 23,881 euros (95% CI = 19,206-30,247) per QALY gained; estimates for LEV were 95 euros (CI 95% = 60-177) and 95,904 euros (CI 95% = 57,137-203,169) respectively. CONCLUSIONS In patients with partial refractory epilepsy, when compared with ST, PGB demonstrated better ICER per additional seizure-free day and QALY gained than LEV.

Abstract
OBJECTIVE To estimate the cost-effectiveness of branded pregabalin (PGB) versus generic gabapentin (GBP) in patients with neuropathic pain (NeP) due to painful diabetic polyneuropathy (DPN) or post-herpetic neuralgia (PHN) in Spain. METHODS Using stochastic simulation, we estimated the cost-effectiveness of PGB 150-600 mg/d vs. GBP 900-3600 mg/d in a hypothetical cohort of 1000 patients. The model used data from three randomized controlled clinical trials. Pain was evaluated using a 0-10 scale. Mean baseline pain was 6.9 in both treatment groups. The model assigned untreated pain scores over 84 days. Treated scores were calculated using weekly changes in pain scores from trials. Outcomes included the numbers of days with no or mild pain (score < 4), days with >or= 30% and >or= 50% reductions in pain intensity, quality-adjusted life-years (QALYs), and estimated health costs. RESULTS Compared with GBP, PGB yielded an estimated mean of 8 (standard error, 0.4) additional days with no or mild pain, 6 (0.4) days with >or= 30% reduction in pain intensity, 9 (0.5) days with >or= 50% reduction in pain intensity, and a gain of 0.1186 (0.0002) QALYs for 12 weeks. The estimated total health costs of therapies were euro 1049 (euro 35) for PGB and euro 951 (euro 38) for GBP, respectively. Incremental cost-effectiveness ratio (ICER) for PGB versus GBP were a mean of euro 12 (95% confidence interval, euro 1-24) per additional day with no or mild pain, euro 431 (dominant-euro 876) per additional patient with no or mild pain, and euro 20 535 (euro 1607-40 345) per QALY gained. CONCLUSIONS According with data used in this modeling in patients with NeP due to DPN and/or PHN, PGB was shown to be more cost-effective than generic gabapentin in Spain.

Abstract
In the last 9 years, epizootics of an icterus condition has affected coho salmon, Oncorhynchus kisutch (Walbaum), reared in seawater cages in southern regions of Chile. At necropsy, fish from field cases exhibited signs of jaundice accompanied by pale light-brown livers and dark spleens. Histopathological and haematological results indicated that these fish presented haemolytic anaemia. After microbiological examination no bacterial or viral agents could be identified as aetiological agents of this disease. In an infectivity trial, coho salmon, Atlantic salmon, Salmo salar L., and rainbow trout, Oncorhynchus mykiss (Walbaum), were inoculated intraperitoneally with a filtrate of an organ homogenate (0.45 microm) from a diseased coho salmon and held for 60 days in tanks supplied with fresh water. The disease was only reproduced in coho salmon in which mortalities, beginning at day 23 post-inoculation (p.i.), reached a cumulative value of 24% at day 27 p.i. This condition was transmitted to non-inoculated cohabiting coho salmon suggesting that it is a waterborne disease. Thus, this icteric condition is caused by an infectious form of haemolytic anaemia, probably of viral aetiology, and coho salmon are more susceptible than either Atlantic salmon or rainbow trout.

Abstract
An integrated postpartum health-care program was established by the Consultorio San Luis de Huechuraba (CSLH), a nongovernmental organization in a neighborhood of extreme poverty in Santiago, Chile. The main components were education, maternal and infant health care, support for the mothers, and active participation of women from the community served. The program was evaluated through indicators of contraceptive use, breastfeeding performance, infant growth and health, and a qualitative assessment of women's satisfaction. Controls were women of similar characteristics attending the nearby public clinic. Acceptability of contraceptive methods was similar but contraceptive options differed between clinics. The total number of pregnancies and of respondents lost to follow-up was significantly higher for the public clinic than for the CSLH. Breastfeeding duration was significantly longer and infant growth and health were found to be significantly better at the CSLH than at the public clinic. Women valued being treated with respect, receiving education and support, and being offered timesaving services and wider contraceptive choices at the CSLH. This study demonstrates that such interventions are possible for poor communities, providing significant advantages for women and children.

Abstract
In studies of the biological effects of UV radiation, ozone depletion can be mimicked by performing the study under ambient conditions and adding radiation with UV-B lamps. We evaluated this methodology at three different locations along a latitudinal gradient: Rimouski (Canada), Ubatuba (Brazil) and Ushuaia (Argentina). Experiments of the effect of potential ozone depletion on marine ecosystems were carried out in large outdoor enclosures (mesocosms). In all locations we simulated irradiances corresponding to 60% ozone depletion, which may produce a 130-1900% increase in 305 nm irradiance at noon, depending on site and season. Supplementation with a fixed percentage of ambient irradiance provides a better simulation of irradiance increase due to ozone depletion than supplementation with a fixed irradiance value, particularly near sunrise and sunset or under cloudy skies. Calculations performed for Ushuaia showed that, on very cloudy days, supplementation by the square-wave method may produce unrealistic irradiances. Differences between the spectra of the calculated supplementing irradiance and the lamp for a given site and date will be a function of the time of day and may become more or less pronounced according to the biological weighting function of the effect under study.

Abstract
Plant traits have become popular as predictors of interspecific variation in important ecosystem properties and processes. Here we introduce foliar pH as a possible new plant trait, and tested whether (1) green leaf pH or leaf litter pH correlates with biochemical and structural foliar traits that are linked to biogeochemical cycling; (2) there is consistent variation in green leaf pH or leaf litter pH among plant types as defined by nutrient uptake mode and higher taxonomy; (3) green leaf pH can predict a significant proportion of variation in leaf digestibility among plant species and types; (4) leaf litter pH can predict a significant proportion of variation in leaf litter decomposability among plant species and types. We found some evidence in support of all four hypotheses for a wide range of species in a subarctic flora, although cryptogams (fern allies and a moss) tended to weaken the patterns by showing relatively poor leaf digestibility or litter decomposability at a given pH. Among seed plant species, green leaf pH itself explained only up to a third of the interspecific variation in leaf digestibility and leaf litter up to a quarter of the interspecific variation in leaf litter decomposability. However, foliar pH substantially improved the power of foliar lignin and/or cellulose concentrations as predictors of these processes when added to regression models as a second variable. When species were aggregated into plant types as defined by higher taxonomy and nutrient uptake mode, green-specific leaf area was a more powerful predictor of digestibility or decomposability than any of the biochemical traits including pH. The usefulness of foliar pH as a new predictive trait, whether or not in combination with other traits, remains to be tested across more plant species, types and biomes, and also in relation to other plant or ecosystem traits and processes.

Abstract
Sequence information was obtained on the variation of the ELA-DRB upstream regulatory region (URR) after polymerase chain reaction-single strand conformation polymorphism (PCR-SSCP) cloning and sequencing of approximately 220 bp upstream of the first exon of horse DRB genes. The sequence of the proximal URR of equine DRB is composed of highly conserved sequence motifs, showing the presence of the W, X, Y, CAAT and TATA conserved boxes of major histocompatibility complex (MHC) class II promoters. Five different polymorphic horse DRB promoter sequences were detected in five horse breeds. The results demonstrate the existence of polymorphism in the nucleotide sequences of the ELA-DRB URR, located in the functionally important conserved consensus sequences, the X2 box, the Y box and the TATA box, while conservation were observed in X1 and CAAT boxes. The nucleotide diversity among horse URRs was intermediate between that seen within human and mouse DRB promoters, suggesting the existence of another important source of variability in ELA-DRB genes. In addition, phylogenetic comparisons, identity analysis and sequence organization suggested that the reported sequences would correspond to an expressed ELA-DRB locus. However, further information about the functional significance of these promoter polymorphisms will probably be acquired through expression studies on the different sequences.

Abstract
The second exon of equine leucocyte antigen (ELA)-DQB genes was amplified from genomic DNA of 32 Argentine Creole horses by PCR. Amplified DNA was analysed by PCR-restriction fragment length polymorphism (RFLP) and PCR-single-strand conformation polymorphism (SSCP). The PCR-RFLP analysis revealed two HaeIII patterns, four RsaI patterns, five MspI patterns and two HinfI patterns. EcoRI showed no variation in the analysed sample. Additional patterns that did not account for known exon 2 DNA sequences were observed, suggesting the existence of novel ELA-DQB alleles. PCR-SSCP analysis exhibited seven different band patterns, and the number of bands per animal ranged from four to nine. Both methods indicated that at least two DQB genes are present. The presence of more than two alleles in each animal showed that the primers employed in this work are not specific for a unique DQB locus. The improvement of this PCR-RFLP method should provide a simple and rapid technique for an accurate definition of ELA-DQB typing in horses.
