Sodium salt promoted the generation of nano zero valent iron by carbothermal reduction: For activating peroxydisulfate to degrade antibiotic

Carbothermal reduction is a promising method for the industrial preparation of nano-zero-valent iron. Preparing it also involves very high pyrolysis temperatures, which leads to a significant amount of energy consumption. The temperature required for the preparation of nano-zero-valent iron by carbothermal reduction was reduced by 200 °C by the addition of sodium salt. Carbon-loaded nano zero-valent iron (Fe0/CB-Na) was prepared by carbothermal reduction through the addition of sodium salt. The results showed that Fe0/CB-Na@700 had the same activation performance as Fe0/CB@900 and the newly prepared nano-zero-valent iron. The addition of sodium salt promoted the transfer of oxygen from the iron oxide to the carbon structure during the roasting process so that the iron oxide was reduced to as much Fe0 as possible. Thus, sodium salts were optimized for the preparation of nano-zero-valent iron by carbothermal reduction through interfacial amorphization and oxygen transfer, thus reducing the preparation cost.

Lanthanum-doped magnetic biochar activating persulfate in the degradation of florfenicol

In this study, lanthanum-doped magnetic biochar (LaMBC) was synthesized from bagasse by co-doping iron salt and lanthanum salt, and it was characterized for its application in the activation of persulfate (PS) in the degradation of Florfenicol (FLO). The results indicated that the LaMBC/PS system consistently achieved a degradation efficiency of over 99.5 %, with a reaction rate constant 4.71 times as that of MBC. The mechanism of FLO degradation suggested that O2•- and •OH played dominant roles, contributing 40.92 % and 36.96 %, respectively, during FLO degradation. Through physicochemical characterization and quenching experiments, it can be concluded that the key reasons for the enhancement of MBC activation performance are as follows: (1) Lanthanum doping in magnetized biochar increased the Fe(II) content in MBC. (2) Lanthanum doping significantly improved the adsorption capacity of LaMBC, increased the concentration of pollutants on the catalyst surface and effectively enhancing the reaction rate. (3) Lanthanum doping effectively increased the surface Fe(II) content during the reaction process in LaMBC, promoted the generation of active oxygen species in PS. This study delves into synthesizing and applying LaMBC for PS activation and FLO removal. The emphasis is on comprehensively characterizing and experimenting to elucidate the mechanism, proposing an innovative approach for efficiently degrading antibiotic wastewater.

Double-edged effect of frequent freeze-thaw on the stability of zero-valent iron after heavy metal remediation

Freeze-thaw cycles (FTCs) cause dynamic microscale changes in ions and solvents. During freezing, heavy metals adsorbed on zero-valent iron (M-ZVI) and protons are excluded by ice crystals and concentrated in the liquid-like grain boundary region. The high proton concentration in this region leads to the dissolution of the passivation layer of ZVI. To assess the environmental risks of M-ZVI during FTCs, this study evaluated the stability of M-ZVI in this scenario from both microscale and macroscale perspectives. The results showed that the dissolution of the passivation layer had a dual effect on the stability of M-ZVI, which depends on the by-products of M-ZVI. The dissolution of the passivation layer was accompanied by the leaching of heavy metals, such as Ni-ZVI, but it also enhanced the reactivity of ZVI, causing it to re-react with desorbed heavy metals. The stability of Cr-ZVI and Cd-ZVI was improved due to frequent FTCs. Furthermore, changes in the surrounding environment (water dipole moment, ion concentration, etc.) of ZVI affected the crystallization of Fe oxides, increasing the content of amorphous Fe oxide. As low-crystallinity Fe oxides could facilitate ion doping, Ni2+ was doped into Fe3O4 lattice during FTCs, which reduced the mobility of heavy metals. Contrary to traditional views that freezing temperatures slow chemical reactions, this study provides new insights into the application of iron-based materials in cold environments.

Size- and concentration-dependent effects of microplastics on soil aggregate formation and properties

Plastics fragment and threaten soil ecosystems. Degradation of soil structure is one of the risks. Despite this, data on impacts of different sized microplastics (MPs) on soil aggregates is lacking. This study systematically investigated the effects of pristine polyethylene powders of different sizes (< 35, < 125, < 500 µm) and concentrations (0, 0.1, 1.0, 10 wt%) on aggregate formation and their properties for two contrasting soils (woodland soil, WS; agricultural soil, AS). 75 day wet-dry cycles produced newly-formed aggregates in all treatments. MP size and concentration impacted the incorporation of MPs in aggregates and this varied with aggregate size; the size distribution of aggregates also varied with MP size and concentration. Aggregates produced in soil containing 10 wt% < 35 µm MPs had significantly lower MWDs (mean weight diameters) than controls. The wettability of aggregates (> 4 mm) reduced with increasing MP exposure concentration and decreasing MP exposure size. MP incorporation decreased the water stability of aggregates (1-2 mm) in WS but increased it in AS. The particle density of aggregates (> 4 mm) significantly decreased with increasing MP concentration, whereas MP size had no effect. As MPs breakdown, fragment and become smaller over time, their potential risk to the aggregated structure of soil increases.

Rapid removal of decabromodiphenyl ether by mechanochemically prepared submicron zero-valent iron with FeC2O4·2 H2O layers: Kinetics, mechanisms and pathways

The utilization of nano zero-valent iron (nZVI) in polybrominated diphenyl ethers remediation has been studied extensively. However, challenges in balancing cost and reactivity have been encountered. A submicron zero-valent iron coated with FeC2O4·2 H2O layers (OX-smZVI) was synthesized via a mechanochemical method, aiming to resolve this contradiction. Characterization via SEM, TEM, and XPS confirmed the structure as FeC2O4·2 H2O coated iron lamellate with a surface area 24-fold higher than ball-milled zero-valent iron (smZVI). XRD highlighted an Fe/C eutectic in OX-smZVI, boosting its electron transfer capacity. Decabromodiphenyl ether degradation by OX-smZVI follows a two-stage process, with initial degradation by FeC2O4·2 H2O and a subsequent phase dominated by electron transfer. OX-smZVI exhibits a 4.52-34.40 times faster BDE209 removal rate than nZVI and scaled-up OX-smZVI displayed superior reactivity with preparation costs only 1/680 of nZVI. Given its enhanced reactivity and cost-efficiency, OX-smZVI emerges as a promising replacement for nZVI.

Effect and mechanism of norfloxacin removal by Eucalyptus leaf extract enhanced the ZVI/H2O2 process

The conventional ZVI/H2O2 technology suffers from poor reagent utilization, excess iron sludge generation, and strong low pH dependence. Therefore, eucalyptus leaf extract (ELE) was introduced to improve ZVI/H2O2 technology, and the efficacy and mechanism of ELE promoting ZVI/H2O2 technology were deeply explored. The results showed that the norfloxacin (NOR) removal and kobs of the ZVI/H2O2/ELE process were enhanced by 35.64 % and 3.27 times, respectively, compared to the ZVI/H2O2 process. In the ZVI/H2O2 process, the production of three reactive oxygen species (ROS: 1O2，·O2-，·OH) was effectively promoted by ELE so that the reaction efficacy was significantly enhanced. Moreover, the attack and degradation of pollutants by ROS was the main way to remove pollutants. With the introduction of ELE, the reactive sites on the catalyst appearance were increased to some extent, and the Fe(III)/Fe(II) cycle was improved. The analysis showed that ELE is rich in titratable acids and the ZVI/H2O2 technology is promoted mainly by lowering the pH of the process. In addition, the chelation of ELE and the reduction in pH by the ELE synergistically enhanced the ZVI/H2O2 technology, which significantly improved the reagent utilization (4.70 times for ZVI and 3.03 times for H2O2), broadened the pH range of the technology (6-9) and was able to effectively reduce the iron sludge contamination (30.33 %) of the process. Therefore, the study offers an important value to study eucalyptus leaves in micron-scale ZVI-Fenton technology.

Selective removal of oxytetracycline by molecularly imprinted magnetic biochar

Molecularly imprinted magnetic biochar (MBC@MIPs) was synthesized through molecular imprinting precipitation polymerization. This material demonstrated a selective adsorption capacity of oxytetracycline (OTC) from water samples. Upon characterization of MBC@MIPs, results revealed the formation of a memory cavity shell layer on the magnetic biochar's surface, exhibiting a distinctive recognition effect alongside commendable magnetic and thermal stability. Analysis of the adsorption kinetics indicated that the OTC adsorption process aligned well with the pseudo-second-order rate equation, with chemisorption acting as the predominant mechanism for antibiotic adsorption onto MBC@MIPs. The data could be well described by the Langmuir isotherm model. At 299 K, MBC@MIPs showed a maximum binding capacity of 67.89 mg·g-1, surpassing that of MBC (38.84 mg·g-1) by 1.77 times. MBC@MIPs exhibited the highest selectivity towards OTC, with an imprinting factor (IF) of 5.64. Even amidst interference from antibiotics, MBC@MIPs maintained a significant adsorption capacity for OTC (6.10 mg·g-1), with IF of 6.70.

Gold(I) ion and the phosphine ligand are necessary for the anti-Toxoplasma gondii activity of auranofin

Auranofin, an FDA-approved drug for rheumatoid arthritis, has emerged as a promising antiparasitic medication in recent years. The gold(I) ion in auranofin is postulated to be responsible for its antiparasitic activity. Notably, aurothiomalate and aurothioglucose also contain gold(I), and, like auranofin, they were previously used to treat rheumatoid arthritis. Whether they have antiparasitic activity remains to be elucidated. Herein, we demonstrated that auranofin and similar derivatives, but not aurothiomalate and aurothioglucose, inhibited the growth of Toxoplasma gondii in vitro. We found that auranofin affected the T. gondii biological cycle (lytic cycle) by inhibiting T. gondii's invasion and triggering its egress from the host cell. However, auranofin could not prevent parasite replication once T. gondii resided within the host. Auranofin treatment induced apoptosis in T. gondii parasites, as demonstrated by its reduced size and elevated phosphatidylserine externalization (PS). Notably, the gold from auranofin enters the cytoplasm of T. gondii, as demonstrated by scanning transmission electron microscopy-energy dispersive X-ray spectroscopy (STEM-EDS) and Inductively Coupled Plasma-Mass Spectrometry (ICP-MS).IMPORTANCEToxoplasmosis, caused by Toxoplasma gondii, is a devastating disease affecting the brain and the eyes, frequently affecting immunocompromised individuals. Approximately 60 million people in the United States are already infected with T. gondii, representing a population at-risk of developing toxoplasmosis. Recent advances in treating cancer, autoimmune diseases, and organ transplants have contributed to this at-risk population's exponential growth. Paradoxically, treatments for toxoplasmosis have remained the same for more than 60 years, relying on medications well-known for their bone marrow toxicity and allergic reactions. Discovering new therapies is a priority, and repurposing FDA-approved drugs is an alternative approach to speed up drug discovery. Herein, we report the effect of auranofin, an FDA-approved drug, on the biological cycle of T. gondii and how both the phosphine ligand and the gold molecule determine the anti-parasitic activity of auranofin and other gold compounds. Our studies would contribute to the pipeline of candidate anti-T. gondii agents.

Ethanol, not water, should be used as the dispersant when measuring microplastic particle size distribution by laser diffraction

Size distribution is a crucial characteristic of microplastics (MPs). A typical method for measuring this property is wet laser diffraction. However, when measuring size distributions of MPs, despite it being a poor dispersant for many MPs, water is commonly selected, potentially limiting the reliability of reported measurements. To evaluate dispersant suitability, different aqueous concentrations of ethanol (0, 10, 20, 30, 40, 50, 75, 100 wt%) and aqueous solutions of 0.001 wt% Triton X-100 and a mixture comprising 10 wt% sodium pyrophosphate and 10 wt% methanol were used as dispersants in a laser granulometer (Mastersizer 2000) to determine particle size distributions (PSDs) of granular polyethylene MP35, MP125 and MP500 particles (nominally <35, <125 and, < 500 μm in size). The reliability of the PSDs depended on the dispersant used and size of primary MPs. With increasing ethanol concentrations, PSD curves of MP35 particles shifted from multi-modal to mono-modal distributions. The measured size distribution reduced from 1588.7 to 4.5 μm in water to 39.9 to 0.1 μm in 100 wt% ethanol. Generally, as ethanol concentration increased, uncertainty associated with the PSD parameters decreased. Although Triton X-100 and the mixed solution also showed better dispersion than water, measured particle sizes and coefficient of variation (COV, %) were notably larger than those for 100 wt% ethanol. Similar trends were observed for larger-sized MP125 and MP500 particles, but differences in PSD curves, PSD parameters, and COV (%) among dispersants were less pronounced. In all dispersants, the volume weighted mean diameters (VWMD) in 100 wt% ethanol (MP35: 14.1 μm, MP125: 102.5 μm, MP500: 300.0 μm) were smallest and close to diameters determined from microscope observations (MP35: 14.6 μm, MP125: 109.0 μm, MP500: 310.6 μm). Therefore, for accurate determinations of the PSDs of MP by wet laser diffraction, ethanol rather than water should be used as the dispersant.

Nitrogen-rich magnetic biochar prepared by urea was used as an efficient catalyst to activate persulfate to degrade organic pollutants

In order to fully exploit the potential of magnetic biochar-based persulfate (PS) systems, N was utilized to modify the magnetic biochar-based catalysts through impregnation-pyrolysis method. A typical antifungal drug, metronidazole (MNZ), is selected as the target pollutant to score the reactivity of as-synthetic nitrogen-rich magnetic biochar (NMBC) catalysts. In the modified system, 99.6% of MNZ was removed, 13.6 times of that in the unmodified system. Active radical verification experiments showed that 1O2 was the key active radical. Various characterization showed that the nitrogen-rich significantly improved the persistent free radical, defect degree, content of oxygen-containing groups, electrochemical conductivity and other catalytic activity related properties. Physicochemical characterization, Fe(II) semi-quantitative analysis and masking experiments confirmed that the doping of magnetic biochar with nitrogen increased its Fe(II) content (23.79 mg/g), approximately 2.6 times higher than that of pristine magnetic biochar. Moreover, N induces strong electron accretion of Fe atom through coordination bond, which leads to the increase of electron density on the Fe atom, which increases the content of Fe (II) in the material, thus improving the ability of the material to activate PS to generate 1O2, and promoting the degradation reaction of MNZ. This paper provides a method to improve the activation performance of magnetic biochar.

A Ferroptosis Microneedle Integrated Wireless Implanted Photodynamic Therapy Pellet for Cancer Treatment

PURPOSE/OBJECTIVE(S)

Effective, non-toxic, and targeted induction of lung cancer cell death is urgently needed. The goal of this research is to create a new implantable battery-free therapeutic pellet with integrated drug microneedles that allows for wireless photodynamic therapy (PDT) and targeted release of a ferroptosis inducer (Imidazole ketone erastin, IKE) into tumor tissue.

MATERIALS/METHODS

A wireless power unit, μ-LED illuminant, a flexible control circuit, and an IKE-stored biodegradable microneedle enclosed in polydimethylsiloxane (PDMS) were all built into an integrated therapeutic pellet. Lung cancer cells were used to illustrate the in vitro viability and molecular biological processes of this system. Therapeutic pellet implanted into the LLC xenograft C57BL/6 model. PDT was conducted by 660 nm laser irradiation after injecting a photosensitizer (Chlorin e6, Ce6) and targeted IKE released into the tumor. Systematically analyzing the therapeutic effects on lung cancer and toxic side-effects.

RESULTS

The PDT-IKE group reduced cellular viability by 90% compared to the control group at the cellular level. In mouse model studies, the PDT-IKE group suppressed tumors at 78.8%, three or four times greater than the PDT (26.6%) or IKE (19.2%) group alone. The PDT-IKE group also controlled IKE release more precisely with heated electrodes, reducing nephrotoxicity and improving safety. Moreover, the combination of PDT and IKE can effectively cause ferroptosis in tumor cells, both in vivo and in vitro.

CONCLUSION

A new implantable battery-free therapeutic pellet was designed for wireless PDT with integrated IKE microneedles to induce obvious ferroptosis in lung cancer. The proposed pellet would provide a promising strategy for cancer treatment.

Simultaneous remediation of co-contaminated soil by ball-milled zero-valent iron coupled with persulfate oxidation

The problem of co-contaminated soil at e-waste dismantling sites is serious and constitutes a critical threat to human health and the ecological environment. Zero-valent iron (ZVI) has been proven to be effective in the stabilization of heavy metals and the removal of halogenated organic compounds (HOCs) from soils. However, for the remediation of co-contamination of heavy metals with HOCs, ZVI has disadvantages such as high remediation cost and inability to take into account both pollutants, which limits its large-scale application. In this paper, boric acid and commercial zero-valent iron (cZVI) were used as raw materials to prepare boric acid-modified zero-valent iron (B-ZVI^bm) through a high-energy ball milling strategy. B-ZVI^bm coupled with persulfate (PS) to achieve simultaneous remediation of co-contaminated soil. The synergistic treatment of PS and B-ZVI^bm resulted in the removal efficiency of 81.3% for decabromodiphenyl ether (BDE209) and the stabilization efficiencies of 96.5%, 99.8%, and 28.8% for Cu, Pb, and Cd respectively in the co-contaminated soil. A series of physical and chemical characterization methods showed that the oxide coat on the surface of B-ZVI^bm could be replaced by borides during ball milling. The boride coat facilitated the exposure of the Fe⁰ core, promoted the corrosion of ZVI and the orderly release of Fe²⁺. The analysis of the morphological transformation of heavy metals in soils revealed that most of the heavy metals in the exchangeable, carbonate-bound state were transformed into the residue state, which was the key mechanism for the remediation of heavy metal-contaminated soils with B-ZVI^bm. The analysis of BDE209 degradation products showed that BDE209 was degraded to lower brominated products and further mineralized by ZVI reduction and free radical oxidation. In general, B-ZVI^bm coupled with PS is a good recipe for synergistic remediation of co-contaminated soils with heavy metals and HOCs.

Single/co-adsorption and mechanism of methylene blue and lead by β-cyclodextrin modified magnetic alginate/biochar

Due to the high biological toxicity, the concurrent elimination of lead (Pb (II)) and methylene blue (MB) has become a challenging problem. Therefore, a newly β-cyclodextrin (β-CD) modified magnetic alginate/biochar (β-CD@MBC_P) material was developed. Comprehensive characterizations proved the successful coating of β-CD onto MBC_P surface by microwave-aided fabrication. The β-CD@MBC_P achieved high-efficiency uptake for contaminants under a wide pH scope. In the dual system, Pb (II) elimination was facilitated with the presence of MB, due to the active sites provided by MB. In the presence of Pb (II), MB uptake was inhibited due to the electrostatic repulsion between positively charged MB and Pb (II). Electrostatic attraction and complexation contributed to capturing Pb (II), while π-π interactions, host-guest effect, and H-bonding were important in MB elimination. After four cycles, β-CD@MBC_P maintained comparatively good renewability. Findings demonstrated that β-CD@MBC_P could be an effective remediation material for Pb (II)/MB adsorption from aqueous environments.

Remediation of polybrominated diphenyl ethers contaminated soil in the e-waste disposal site by ball milling modified zero valent iron activated persulfate

Hydrophobic organic compounds (HOCs) in e-waste disposal sites are difficult to remove effectively. There is little reported about zero valent iron (ZVI) coupled with persulfate (PS) to achieve the removal of decabromodiphenyl ether (BDE209) from soil. In this work, we have prepared the flake submicron zero valent iron by ball milling with boric acid (B-mZVI^bm) at a low cost. Sacrifice experiments results showed that 56.6% of BDE209 was removed in 72 h with PS/B-mZVI^bm, which was 2.12 times than that of micron zero valent iron (mZVI). The morphology, crystal form, atomic valence, composition, and functional group of B-mZVI^bm were determined by SEM, XRD, XPS, and FTIR, and the results indicated that the oxide layer on the surface of mZVI is replaced by borides. The results of EPR indicated that hydroxyl radical and sulfate radical played the dominant role in the degradation of BDE209. The degradation products of BDE209 were determined by gas chromatography-mass spectrometry (GC-MS), accordingly, the possible degradation pathway was further proposed. The research suggested that ball milling with mZVI and boric acid is a low-cost means of preparing highly active zero valent iron materials. And the mZVI^bm has promising applications in improving the activation efficiency of PS and enhancing the removal of the contaminant.

Effect of Mn-based magnetic biochar /PS reaction system on oxidation of metronidazole

In order to fully exploit the potential of magnetic biochar-based persulfate (PS) systems, Mn was utilized to modify the magnetic biochar-based catalysts through impregnation-pyrolysis method. Taking metronidazole (MNZ), a typical antifungal drug, as the target contaminant, the reactivity of the synthesized magnetic biochar (MMBC) catalyst was evaluated. The degradation efficiency of MNZ in MMBC/persulfate system was 95.6%, which was 13.0 times higher than that in MBC/PS system. The characterization experiments confirmed the degradation of metronidazole by surface binding free radicals, the ·OH and 1O2 played the key role in remove of MNZ in the system of MMBC/PS. Physicochemical characterization, Fe(II) semi-quantitative analysis and masking experiments confirmed that the doping of MBC with Mn increased its Fe(II) content (43.0 mg/g), approximately 7.8 times higher than that of pristine MBC. The increase of Fe(II) content in MBC is the key reason to improve the optimization of MBC modified with Mn. Simultaneously, both Fe(II) and Mn(II) were the key components of PS activation by magnetic biochar. This paper presents a method to optimize the high efficiency of PS activation by magnetic biochar.

Effect and mechanism of norfloxacin removal by guava leaf extract in the ZVI/H2O2 system

To overcome the bottlenecks of the conventional zero-valent iron Fenton-like (ZVI/H₂O₂) process, such as low reagent utilization, low applicable pH, and iron sludge contamination, guava leaf extract (GLE) was used as a green promoter to enhance ZVI/H₂O₂ process in this study. Compared with the ZVI/H₂O₂ system, the removal rate and k_obs of norfloxacin by the ZVI/H₂O₂/GLE system were increased by 33.76% and 2.19 times, respectively. The experimental investigation of the mechanism showed that the attack of reactive oxygen species was the main pathway for the removal of pollutants, and three types of reactive oxygen species (¹O₂, O₂^-,·OH) generations in the ZVI/H₂O₂/GLE system were effectively promoted by the introduction of GLE. The reactivity improvement was mainly due to the decrease of pH. At the same time, the chelation of iron ions by GLE promoted the Fe(III)/Fe(II) cycle on the catalyst surface was also a minor mechanism to improve the reactivity. This study provides a crucial reference for the practical application of guava leaf to promote the ZVI/H₂O₂ process in environmental pollution control.

[Directed differentiation of human induced pluripotent stem cells into midbrain]

OBJECTIVE

To establish an efficient protocol for directed differentiation of human induced pluripotent stem cells (hiPSCs) into functional midbrain dopaminergic progenitor cells (DAPs) in vitro.

METHODS

hiPSCs were induced to differentiate into DAPs in two developmental stages. In the first stage (the first 13 days), hiPSCs were induced into intermediate cells morphologically similar to primitive neuroepithelial cells (NECs) in neural induction medium containing a combination of small molecule compounds. In the second stage, the intermediate cells were further induced in neural differentiation medium until day 28 to obtain DAPs. After CM-DiI staining, the induced DAPs were stereotactically transplanted into the right medial forebrain bundle (MFB) of rat models of Parkinson's disease (PD). Eight weeks after transplantation, the motor behaviors of PD rats was evaluated. Immunofluorescence assay of brain sections of the rats was performed at 2 weeks after transplantation to observe the survival, migration and differentiation of the transplanted cells in the host brain microenvironment.

RESULTS

hiPSCs passaged stably on Matrigel showed a normal diploid karyotype, expressed the pluripotency markers OCT4, SOX2, and Nanog, and were positive for alkaline phosphatase. The primitive neuroepithelial cells obtained on day 13 formed dense cell colonies in the form of neural rosettes and expressed the neuroepithelial markers (SOX2, Nestin, and PAX6, 91.3%-92.8%). The DAPs on day 28 highly expressed the specific markers (TH, FOXA2, LMX1A and NURR1, 93.3-96.7%). In rat models of PD, the hiPSCs-DAPs survived and differentiated into TH⁺, FOXA2⁺ and Tuj1⁺ neurons at 2 weeks after transplantation. Eight weeks after transplantation, the motor function of PD rats was significantly improved as shown by water maze test (P < 0.0001) and apomorphine-induced rotation test (P < 0.0001) compared with rats receiving vehicle injection.

CONCLUSION

HiPSCs can be effectively induced to differentiate into DAPs capable of differentiating into functional neurons both in vivo and in vitro. In rat models of PD, the transplanted hiPSCs-DAPs can survive for more than 8 weeks in the MFB and differentiate into multiple functional neurocytes to ameliorate neurological deficits of the rats, suggesting the potential value of hiPSCs-DAPs transplantation for treatment of neurological diseases.

Sophorolipid modification enables high reactivity and electron selectivity of nanoscale zerovalent iron toward hexavalent chromium

Nanoscale zero-valent iron is considered to be a promising nanostructure for environmental remediation, while increasing the electron selectivity of nanoscale zerovalent iron (nZVI) during target contaminant removal is still a challenge (electron selectivity, defined as the percentage of electrons transferred to the target contaminants over the number of electrons donated by nZVI). In this study, the strategy for increasing the reactivity and electron selectivity of nZVI via sophorolipid (SL-nZVI) modification was proposed. The results showed that the removal efficiency and electron selectivity of SL-nZVI toward Cr(VI) was 99.99% and 56.30%, which was higher than that of nZVI (61.16%, 25.91%). Meanwhile, the particles were well characterized and the mechanism for enhanced reactivity and electron selectivity was investigated. Specially, both the morphology and BET specific surface area characterization suggested that stability against aggregation was higher in SL-nZVI nanoparticles than in nZVI. Besides, X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS), Tafel polarization curves, and Electrochemical impedance spectroscopy also indicated that the introduction of sophorolipid successfully prevent the nanoparticles from oxidation and benefit the electron transferring. In addition, a water contact angle test revealed that SL-nZVI nanoparticles were less hydrophilic (contact angle = 34.8°) than nZVI (contact angle = 23.9°). Therefore, in terms of reactivity, sophorolipid modification inhibited the aggregation of the nanoparticles and enhanced the electrical conductivity. For electron selectivity, the introduction of sophorolipid not only benefited Cr(VI) adsorption and the electron transfer from Fe⁰ to the surface-adsorbed Cr(VI) that followed but also reduced the possibility of side reactions between Fe⁰ and H₂O. This study demonstrates that the introduction of sophorolipid is an effective strategy for developing a highly efficient nZVI-based nanocomposite system and highlights the potential role of sophorolipid in improving the electron selectivity of nZVI.

Effects of Pretreatment and Polarization Shielding on EK-PRB of Fe/Mn/C-LDH for Remediation of Arsenic Contaminated Soils

In this study, coupling electrokinetic (EK) with the permeable reactive barriers (PRB) of Fe/Mn/C-LDH composite was applied for the remediation of arsenic-contaminated soils. By using self-made Fe/Mn/C-LDH materials as PRB filler, the effects of pretreatment and polarization shielding on EK-PRB of Fe/Mn/C-LDH for remediation of arsenic contaminated soils were investigated. For the pretreatment, phosphoric acid, phosphoric acid and water washing, and phosphate were adopted to reduce the influence of iron in soil. The addition of phosphate could effectively reduce the soil leaching toxicity concentration. The removal rate of the soil pretreated with phosphoric acid or phosphoric acid and water washing was better than with phosphate pretreatment. For the polarization shielding, circulating electrolyte, electrolyte type, anion and cation membranes, and the exchange of cathode and anode were investigated. The electrolyte circulates from the cathode chamber to the anode chamber through the peristaltic pump to control the pH value of the electrolyte, and the highest arsenic toxicity removal rate in the soil reaches 97.36%. The variation of total arsenic residue in soil using anion and cation membranes is the most regular. The total arsenic residue gradually decreases from cathode to anode. Electrode exchange can neutralize H⁺ and OH^- produced by electrolyte, reduce the accumulation of soil cathode area, shield the reduction of repair efficiency caused by resistance polarization, enhance current, and improve the removal rate of arsenic in soil.

Enhanced Cd(II) immobilization in sediment with zero-valent iron induced by hydrogenotrophic denitrification

In this study, an integrated system of Fe⁰ and hydrogenotrophic microbes mediated by nitrate (nitrate-mediated bio-Fe⁰, NMB-Fe⁰) was established to remediate Cd(II)-contaminated sediment. Solid phase characterization confirmed that aqueous Cd(II) (Cd(II)_aq) was successfully immobilized and enriched on iron surface due to promoted iron corrosion driven by hydrogenotrophic denitrification and subsequent greater biomineral production such as magnetite, lepidocrocite and green rust. Compared to a Cd(II)_aq removal of 21.1% in overlying water of the nitrate-mediated Fe⁰ (NM-Fe⁰) system, the NMB-Fe⁰ system obtained a much higher Cd(II)_aq removal of 83.1% after 7 d remediation. The leaching test and sequential extraction results also showed that the leachability of Cd(II) decreased by 75.9% while the residual fraction of Cd(II) increased by 185.7% in comparison with untreated sediment. Besides, the Cd(II)_aq removal raised with the increase of nitrate concentration and Fe⁰ dosage, further revealing the promotion effect of nitrate on Cd(II) removal by bio-Fe⁰. This study highlighted the involvement of bio-denitrification in the remediation of Cd(II)-contaminated sediment by Fe⁰ and provided a new insight to enhance its reactivity and applicability for Cd(II) immobilization.

Impacts of anions on activated persulfate oxidation of Fe(II) - Rich potassium doped magnetic biochar

The potassium-doped magnetic biochar (KMBC) preparation was inevitably introduced the different anions in the process of modifying magnetic biochar (MBC) with different potassium salts, but the effect and mechanism of different anion on KMBC activation properties has not been reported. Therefore, in this paper, five different KMBCs were prepared using several common potassium salts under the same dosage of K⁺ and Fe²⁺, and then was added in the presence of persulfate (PS) for the removal of metronidazole (MNZ). The removal rate of metronidazole was ordered as KMBC_K2SO4 (98.40%) > KMBC_KNO3 (76.84%) > KMBC_KCl (20.79%) > KMBC_K2CO3 (19.02%) > KMBC_K2C2O4 (14.23%). However, the semi-quantitative of Fe(II) experiments results confirmed that the effectively increase of Fe(II) content by potassium salts modification played the dominant role in improvement of KMBC activation performance. The Fe(II) content of KMBC were ordered as KMBC_K2CO3 > KMBC_K2SO4 > KMBC_KNO3 > KMBC_KCl > KMBC_K2C2O4, with the Fe(II) content of KMBC of 36.74, 17.70, 8.79, 5.24 and 4.85 mg/g, respectively. The indicated that the introduction of different anions would lead to different optimal Fe(Ⅱ) content in KMBC modified with different potassium salts, which was most directly reflected in ¹O₂ content in different KMBC/PS systems, and account for the difference in MNZ degradation efficiency. Meanwhile, when the Fe(II) content in KMBC reached the range of 13.7-28.8 mg/g, KMBC had the better performance of activating PS.

Remediation of cadmium or arsenic contaminated water and soil by modified biochar: A review

Biochar has a high specific surface area with abundant pore structure and functional groups, which has been widely used in remediation of cadmium or arsenic contaminated water and soil. However, the bottleneck problem of low-efficiency of pristine biochar in remediation of contaminated environments always occurs. Nowadays, the modification of biochar is a feasible way to enhance the performance of biochar. Based on the Web of science™, the research progress of modified biochar and its application in remediation of cadmium or arsenic contaminated water and soil have been systematically summarized in this paper. The main modification strategies of biochar were summarized, and the variation of physicochemical properties of biochar before and after modification were illustrated. The efficiency and key mechanisms of modified biochar for remediation of cadmium or arsenic contaminated water and soil were expounded in detail. Finally, some constructive suggestions were given for the future direction and challenges of modified biochar research.

Effective immobilization of Cd(II) in soil by biotic zero-valent iron and coexisting sulfate

In this work, zero-valent iron (ZVI) combined with anaerobic bacteria was used in the remediation of Cd(II)-polluted soil under the mediation of sulfate (SO₄^2-). Owing to hydrogen-autotrophic sulfate reduction, serious corrosion occurred on sulfate-mediated biotic ZVI in terms of solid phase characterization as massive corrosive products (e.g., goethite, magnetite and green rust) were formed, which were crucial in the immobilization of Cd(II). Thus, this integrated system achieved a 4.9-fold increase in aqueous Cd(II) removal and converted more than 53% of easily available Cd(II)-fractions (acid-extractable and reducible) to stable forms (oxidizable and residual) based on the sequential extraction results as compared to the sulfate-mediated ZVI system. Increasing SO₄^2- concentration and ZVI dosage both demonstrated positive correlation to Cd(II) immobilization, which further reflected that hydrogenotrophic desulfuration acted an essential role in improving Cd(II) immobilization. It indicated that hydrogenotrophic desulfuration could accelerate iron corrosion and promote reactive mineral formation through biomineralization, as well as generate cadmium sulfide precipitates (CdS) to achieve excellent immobilization performance for Cd(II). Besides, this reaction was favorable under neutral pH condition. Our results highlighted the promoted effect of hydrogen-autotrophic desulfuration on ZVI corrosion to immobilize Cd(II) and offered a practicable technique in Cd(II)-polluted soil remediation.

[Efficacy of one-stage total spondylectomy and circumferential reconstruction for axial tumors through a combined anterior retropharyngeal-posterior approach]

Objective: To elucidate the safety and efficacy of one-stage total spondylectomy and circumferential reconstruction through a combined anterior retropharyngeal-posterior approach for axial tumors. Methods: A total of 20 patients with axial tumor who received total spondylectomy through a combined anterior retropharyngeal-posterior approach in Tongji Hospital of Tongji Medical College of Huazhong University of Science and Technology from February 2006 to December 2018 were retrospectively analyzed. Anterior reconstruction was performed with a special-shaped titanium mesh or three-dimensional printed (3DP) implants. The degree of local pain and neurological function was assessed by the visual analogue scale (VAS) and Frankel classification systems, respectively. Status of internal fixation and local recurrence was analyzed by radiological examination during follow-up. Results: Among the 20 patients, 12 were male and 8 were female with a mean age of (59.1±11.0) years (31 to 72 years). The mean operation time was (605.0±60.1) minutes (430 to 700 minutes) with a mean intraoperative blood loss of (1 250±347) ml (800 to 2 400 ml). The mean postoperative hospital stay was (13.2±2.8) days (8 to 20 days), and mean follow-up duration was (37.2±14.2) months(14 to 66 months). Anterior reconstructions were performed with a special-shaped titanium mesh in 14 patients and with 3DP implants in another 6 patients. Posterior occipital-cervical fixation was performed in 5 patients, while cervical fixation only in another 15 patients. The mean VAS score of pain at the last follow-up decreased significantly when compared with that before operation (1.6±0.6 vs 7.1±1.1, P<0.001). Nine patients with neurological deficits indicated significant improvement by at least 1 level at the last follow-up; among them, 2 cases of Frankel B improved to Frankel C and D, respectively; 3 cases of Frankel C all improved to Frankel D, and 4 cases of Frankel D improved to Frankel E. The perioperative complications included: 2 cases of vertebral artery injury, 2 cases of dysphagia, 3 cases of hoarseness and cough, 2 cases of cerebrospinal fluid leakage, and 1 case of greater occipital neuralgia. At the last follow-up, 5 patients died and 3 patients relapsed. Only 1 case suffered fixation failure due to local recurrence at the last follow up. Conclusions: One-stage total spondylectomy and circumferential reconstruction through a combined anterior retropharyngeal-posterior approach is safe and effective for axial tumors with favorable clinical outcomes and minor complications. Circumferential reconstruction with special-shaped titanium mesh or 3DP implant and posterior fixation can effectively reconstruct mechanical stability.

Constructing mesoporous Zr-doped SiO2 onto efficient Z-scheme TiO2/g-C3N4 heterojunction for antibiotic degradation via adsorption-photocatalysis and mechanism insight

Novel modified-TiO₂/Zr-doped SiO₂/g-C₃N₄ ternary composite is fabricated via an in-situ grow of porous Zr-SiO₂ layer to TiO₂/g-C₃N₄ heterojunction, which exhibits well adsorption-photocatalytic performance under simulated solar light irradiation. The nano-size mesoporous TiO₂ are dispersed on the lamellar g-C₃N₄, and the Zr-SiO₂ is in-situ fabricated onto the surface of g-C₃N₄ sheets. The adsorption occurs on the SiO₂ layers, and doping Zr element to SiO₂ enhances the adsorption of pollutants, while the photocatalytic reaction occurs on the valence band (VB) of TiO₂ and conduction band (CB) of g-C₃N₄, which gives reactive oxygen species of ∙O₂^-, h⁺, and ∙OH for high efficient decomposition of antibiotics, i.e. berberine hydrochloride (98.11%), tetracycline (80.76%), and oxytetracycline (84.84%). The excellent adsorption capacity and Z-scheme photoinduced charge carrier migration behavior endowed the novel material with enhanced berberine hydrochloride (BH) removal in water, which approximately 2.5 and 3.8 folds than that of pure g-C₃N₄ and sole TiO₂, respectively. Three degradation pathways are unraveled by LC-MS and theoretical calculations. Furthermore, the toxicity of intermediates was evaluated by the Toxicity Estimation Software Tool (T.E.S.T.), the result demonstrated a good application potential of M-TiO₂/Zr-SiO₂/g-C₃N₄ as an novel adsorptive photocatalyst.

Nanoscale zero-valent iron immobilized by ZIF-8 metal-organic frameworks for enhanced removal of hexavalent chromium

nZVI is considered to be a promising material for environmental remediation. However, the drawbacks of easy agglomeration and low activity severely limit its application. In this work, nZVI/ZIF-8 was obtained by in-situ reduction of nZVI in the presence of performed ZIF-8. The reactivity of the as-obtained nZVI/ZIF-8 nanocomposites was investigated by removing hexavalent chromium (Cr(VI)) from wastewater. The as-obtained nZVI/ZIF-8 nanocomposites showed a superior activity for Cr(VI) removal, with an optimum activity (91.27%) achieved over 0.25 nZVI/ZIF-8 (i e., the mass ratio of ZIF-8 to nZVI was 0.25), higher than that of nZVI (64.55%), and this could be owned to the excellent dispersion of nZVI in nZVI/ZIF-8 and the high specific surface area as compared with the bare nZVI. The results of XPS characterization, quenching experiment analysis and kinetics fitting indicated that the Cr(VI) elimination was a surface-dominated chemical reduction process. Besides, more than 99.00% Cd(II), Cu(II), Cr(VI) and Pb(II) was removed from wastewater over nZVI/ZIF-8 nanocomposites, and negligible zinc ion was detected in the aqueous solutions. The results of our finding demonstrate that the introduction of MOFs is an effective strategy in developing a highly efficient nZVI-based nanocomposites system, and also highlight the promising role of using nZVI/MOFs in heavy metal treatment for practical wastewater.

A comparative study on adsorption and catalytic degradation of tetracycline by five magnetic mineral functional materials prepared from steel pickling waste liquor

Palygorskite (Pal), bentonite (Bent), sepiolite (Sep), zeolite (Zeol), and kaolin (Kaol) were used with steel pickling waste liquor to synthesize magnetic palygorskite (Pal@Fe₃O₄), magnetic bentonite (Bent@Fe₃O₄), magnetic sepiolite (Sep@Fe₃O₄), magnetic zeolite (Zeol@Fe₃O₄), and magnetic kaolin (Kaol@Fe₃O₄), for adsorption and catalytic degradation of tetracycline (TC), respectively. Through the study of adsorption kinetics and adsorption isotherms, the maximum adsorption capacity of Pal@Fe₃O₄ to TC was 149.439 mg/g, which was 1.239 times, 2.260 times, 3.161 times, and 3.448 times of Bent@Fe₃O₄, Zeol@Fe₃O₄, Kaol@Fe₃O₄, and Sep@Fe₃O₄, respectively. The kinetic study of tetracycline degradation demonstrated that the maximum reaction rate constant of Bent@Fe₃O₄/H₂O₂ system was K_(obs) = 2.12 × 10^-2 min^-1, which was close to that of Pal@Fe₃O₄/H₂O₂, Kaol@Fe₃O₄/H₂O₂ system, and was 2.000 times, 2.356 times, 2.650 times, and 4.711 times of Fe₃O₄/H₂O₂, Zeol@Fe₃O₄/H₂O₂, Sep@Fe₃O₄/H₂O₂, and H₂O₂ system, respectively. The results showed that Pal@Fe₃O₄ and Bent@Fe₃O₄ were more advantageous in the treatment of wastewater containing tetracycline, and efficient reuse of exhausted magnetic minerals and deep mineralization of organic pollutants were achieved by constructing an advanced oxidation system. The BET, VSM, SEM, XPS, XRD, and FTIR were used to characterize the five clay minerals before and after magnetic modification. It was speculated that the surface structure - OH groups of clay minerals might be significant factors influencing the adsorption performance of magnetic minerals on TC, and reduction ability of clay minerals to Fe³⁺ importantly affected the catalytic performance of magnetic minerals. The specific surface area and morphological structure of clay minerals both affected the adsorption and catalytic degradation of TC by the five magnetic minerals.

Anatase quantum dots decorated silica/carbon lamellas for removal of antipsychotic drugs via adsorption-photocatalysis and toxicity evaluation

In this work, discrete quantum dots of crystallized anatase TiO₂ are successfully anchored on carbon nanosheets containing amorphous SiO₂ via templated self-assembly and pyrolysis routes. The novel hybrid photocatalyst of TiO₂/C/SiO₂ exhibits well coupled adsorption and visible light photocatalysis on chlorpromazine (CPZ) and the rate constants are 0.0223 and 0.0198 min^-1, respectively. The direct photocatalytic degradation of CPZ under static conditions reaches 91.1% within 3 h while a removal rate of 31.4% for CPZ could be retained under dynamic flow conditions, and the improved performance could be attributed to enhanced adsorption via SiO₂/C and highly exposure of TiO₂ QDs surface. Based on the trapping experiments, ESR, LC-MS, and toxicity evaluation, O₂^- free radicals are identified as main reactive species for CPZ degradation along three possible pathways, with reduced toxicities for its intermediates. The cell viability tests of photocatalytic-degraded solutions and the catalyst exhibit negligible toxicities for both intermediates and the material, suggesting the novel composite of TiO₂/C/SiO₂ as an environmental friendly photocatalyst for pharmaceutical wastewater treatment.

Body mass index increases the recurrence risk of breast cancer: a dose-response meta-analysis from 21 prospective cohort studies

OBJECTIVE

The purpose of this study was to investigate the effect of body mass index (BMI) on the recurrence risk of breast cancer.

STUDY DESIGN

Dose-response meta-analysis.

METHODS

Cohort studies that included BMI and the recurrence of breast cancer were selected through various databases including PubMed, Web of Science, the China National Knowledge Infrastructure (CNKI), Chinese Scientific Journals (VIP), and Wanfang Data Knowledge Service Platform (WanFang) until November 30, 2021. The Newcastle-Ottawa Scale (NOS) was used to evaluate the quality of literature. A two-stage random-effects meta-analysis was performed to assess the dose-response relationship between BMI and breast cancer recurrence risk. Heterogeneity between studies is assessed using I².

RESULTS

The relative risk (RR) of BMI <25 kg/m² vs BMI ≥25 kg/m², BMI <30 kg/m² vs BMI ≥30 kg/m² were 1.09 (95% CI: 1.00-1.19) and 1.15 (95% CI: 1.04-1.27), suggesting that BMI had a significant effect on the recurrence risk of breast cancer, and there might be a dose-response relationship between them. A total of 21 studies were included in dose-response meta-analysis, which showed that there was a positive linear correlation between BMI and the risk of recurrence (RR = 1.02, 95% CI: 1.01-1.03). For every 1 kg/m² increment of BMI, the risk of recurrence increased by approximately 2%. In subgroup analyses, positive linear dose-response relationships between BMI and recurrence risk were observed among Asian and study period >10 years groups. For every 1 kg/m² increment of BMI, the risk of recurrence increased by 3.41% and 1.87%, respectively.

CONCLUSIONS

The recurrence risk of breast cancer increases with BMI, which is most obvious among Asian women.

Column study of Cd(II) removal and longevity by nitrate-mediated zero-valent iron with mixed anaerobic microorganisms

In this study, hydrogen-autotrophic microorganisms and zero-valent iron (Fe⁰) were filled into columns to investigate hydrogenotrophic denitrification effect on cadmium (Cd(II)) removal and column life-span with sand, microorganisms, Fe⁰ and bio-Fe⁰ columns as controls. In terms of the experiment results, the nitrate-mediated bio-Fe⁰ column showed a slow Cd(II) migration rate of 0.04 cm/PV, while the values in the bio-Fe⁰ and Fe⁰ columns were 0.06 cm/PV and 0.14 cm/PV respectively, indicating much higher Cd(II) removal efficiency and longer service life of the nitrate-mediated bio-Fe⁰ column. The XRD and SEM-EDX results implied that this improvement was attributed to hydrogenotrophic denitrification that caused more serious iron corrosion and larger amount of secondary mineral generation (e.g., green rust, lepidocrocite and goethite). These active minerals provided more reaction sites for Cd(II) adsorption and further immobilization. In addition, the decrease of Cd(II) migration front and the increase of removal capacity along the bio-Fe⁰ column mediated by nitrate presented an uneven distribution in reactive zone. The latter half part was identified to be a more active region for Cd(II) immobilization. The above results indicate that the introduction of nitrate and microorganisms will improve the performance of iron-based permeable reactive barriers for the remediation of Cd(II)-containing groundwater.

Activation of persulfate for highly efficient degradation of metronidazole using Fe(II)-rich potassium doped magnetic biochar

The content of active components in magnetic biochar, especially Fe(II), is closely related to its activation performance. Therefore, improving Fe(II) content in magnetic biochar is an ideal strategy to enhance the activation performance of magnetic biochar. In this study, the potassium-doped magnetic biochar was prepared and employed to activate persulfate for degradation of metronidazole. The degradation efficiency of metronidazole in potassium-doped magnetic biochar/persulfate system was 98.4%, which was 13.1 times higher than that in magnetic biochar/persulfate system. Free radicals quenching experiments and electron spin resonance analyses confirmed that surface-bound free radicals were responsible for metronidazole degradation followed the order of ¹O₂ > ·OH > SO₄·^- > O₂·^-. The doping of magnetic biochar with potassium increased its Fe(II) content, approximately 3.1 times higher than that of pristine magnetic biochar. The differences in Fe(II) content between potassium-doped magnetic biochar and magnetic biochar were the key reasons for the activation performance differences. Based on the ultra-high pressure liquid chromatography-quadrupole tandem time-of-flight mass spectrometer, the primary degradation intermediates of metronidazole were identified, and possible degrading pathways were proposed. Overall, this work provides an effective strategy to improve the activation performance of magnetic biochar.

Mathematical model and experiment analysis of pressure fluctuation inside dual-stack drainage system in residential buildings

The final velocity was put forward to study the water flow characteristics inside the building drainage system; however, it is more suitable for low-rise and multi-storey buildings, not for high-rise buildings. This study revealed the drainage transient characteristics of a double stack drainage system in high-rise residential buildings. Based on the final velocity, the air-water interaction mechanism and two-phase flow conditions in high-rise residential drainage stacks were discussed. An influence model of drainage system flow rate on pressure fluctuation under the change of state parameters such as ventilation rate, pipe wall roughness and building height was established. The pressure limit and flow rate data were obtained through full-scale experiments. The pressure limit and flow rate model were simplified to P_n = A ċ Q² + B ċ Q^1:81 + C. After the data were verified, the fitting coefficients A, B and C were linear to the floor height.

Removal of fluconazole from aqueous solution by magnetic biochar treated by ball milling: adsorption performance and mechanism

The problem of low adsorption capacity of pristine magnetic biochar for organic pollutants always occurs. It is of great significance to select a suitable method to improve the adsorption performance of magnetic biochar. In this study, magnetic biochar was treated by ball milling and tested for its fluconazole adsorption capacity. The maximum adsorption capacity of ball-milled magnetic biochar (BMBC) for fluconazole reached nearly 15.90 mg/g, which was approximately five times higher than that of pristine magnetic biochar (MBC). Fluconazole adsorption by BMBC was mainly attributed to π-π interactions, hydrogen bonding, and surface complexation with oxygen-containing functional groups. The enhancement in fluconazole adsorption by BMBC was attributed to an increase in oxygen-containing functional groups. Batch adsorption experiments also illustrated that BMBC could be successfully applied in a wide range of pH values. The high efficiency of fluconazole removal confirmed that ball milling was an effective strategy to enhance the adsorptive performance of magnetic biochar.

Efficacy and safety of closed-loop insulin delivery versus sensor-augmented pump in the treatment of adults with type 1 diabetes: a systematic review and meta-analysis of randomized-controlled trials

BACKGROUND

Controversy remains regarding whether closed-loop (CL) insulin delivery or insulin sensor-augmented pump (SAP) delivery is more efficient for clinical treatment. Therefore, we aimed to compare the efficacy and safety of CL insulin delivery systems versus insulin SAP delivery for adults with type 1 diabetes (T1D).

METHODS

Embase, Ovid MEDLINE, PubMed, ScienceDirect, Scopus, the Cochrane Library, and other databases were searched for related articles, and we analyzed the average blood glucose (BG), time in range (TIR), and adverse effects (AEs) as primary endpoints to evaluate efficacy and safety.

RESULTS

Of 1616 articles, 12 randomized-controlled trials (RCTs) were included in the final analysis. Regarding BG control efficacy, CL insulin delivery resulted better outcomes than SAP therapy with regard to the average BG value, which was detected and recorded by continuous glucose monitoring (mean difference [MD][mmol/L]:  - 0.25 95% confidence interval [CI]  - 0.42 to - 0.08, p = 0.003); TIR 3.9-10 mmol/L (MD [%]: 7.91 95% CI 4.45-11.37, p < 0.00001). Similar results were observed for the secondary outcomes including low blood glucose index (LBGI) (MD:  - 0.41 95% CI - 0.55 to - 0.26, p < 0.00001), high blood glucose index (HBGI) (MD:  - 2.56 95% CI - 3.38 to - 1.74, p < 0.00001), and standard deviation (SD) of glucose variability (MD [mmol/L]: -0.25 95% CI - 0.44 to - 0.06, p = 0.01). Furthermore, SAP therapy was associated with more adverse effects (risk ratio: 0.20 95% CI 0.07-0.52, p = 0.001) than CL insulin delivery, and one of the most common adverse effects was hypoglycemia.

CONCLUSIONS

CL insulin delivery appears to be a better treatment method than SAP therapy for adults with T1D because of its increased BG control efficacy and decreased number of hypoglycemic events.

[Correlation between the pre-and post-operative sagittal parameters and the quality of life in patients with degenerative and isthmic spondylolisthesis]

Objective: To assess the relationship between health-related quality of life (HRQOL) and spinal sagittal parameters in patients with degenerative and isthmic spondylolisthesis before and after surgery, and to provide a biomechanical basis for improving the clinical prognosis of such patients. Methods: A retrospective analysis of 63 patients with lumbar spondylolisthesis who received lumbar fusion surgery in the Department of Spine Surgery, Tianjin Union Medical Center from December 2017 to June 2020 was carried out. There were 16 males and 47 females with a mean age of (59±8) years. Subgroup analyses were conducted based on disease type (degenerative lumbar spondylolisthesis (DS) and the isthmic spondylolisthesis (IS)) and HRQOL scores. Patients were evaluated post-operatively to observe the improvement of symptoms and quality of life. The relationship between operative related factors, HRQOL scores before and after surgery, and spino-pelvic sagittal parameters (including sagittal axis of the spine, lumbar lordosis angle, pelvic incidence angle, pelvic tilt angle (PT), sacral tilt angle, matching degree of pelvic incidence angle (PI) and lumbar lordosis angle (LL), lumbar 1 vertebra plumb line, upper lumbar curve, lower lumbar curve) in the two groups were analyzed. The correlation between the improvement of HRQOL scores and spino-pelvic sagittal parameters in the DS group and the IS group was analyzed and compared. Results: There were significant differences between postoperative HRQOL scores compared with those before the operation in both the DS and IS groups at three times of follow-up after the operation (all P<0.05). There was no difference in the last HRQOL score, the number of surgical segments, operation time and intraoperative blood loss between the two groups (all P>0.05). The parameters of PT and PI-LL in DS patients with VAS back pain score>3 and ≤3 were statistically different (13.7°±6.4° vs 26.6°±7.4°, 5.1°±8.2° vs 18.2°±13.1°, respectively, both P<0.05), similar results were obtained in IS patients (14.1°±6.9° vs 16.4°±8.7°, 2.9°±9.7° vs 6.8°±9.8°, respectively, both P<0.05). In addition, the parameters of PT and PI-LL between patients with ODI>20 and ≤20 were all statistically different in the two groups at the last follow-up after surgery (all P<0.05). The improvement of VAS back pain score in DS and IS groups was significantly related to the improvement of PT value, respectively (r=0.76, 0.78, both P<0.05). The PT, LL and PI-LL were significantly correlated with the ODI in the DS group (r=0.60, 0.62, 0.50, all P<0.05). There was also a correlation between the improvement of ODI and PT, LL and PI-LL in the IS group, respectively (r=0.22, 0.41, 0.76, all P<0.05). Conclusions: Certain correlation exists between the HRQOL and spinal sagittal parameters in patients with degenerative and isthmic spondylolisthesis before and after surgery. For the treatment of lumbar spondylolisthesis and improvement of quality of life, the primary goal is to reconstruct the matching degree of the lumbar lordosis angle and PI, and to reduce the PT value to the normal range by tilting the pelvis forward.

Increasing the electron selectivity of nanoscale zero-valent iron in environmental remediation: A review

Nanoscale zero-valent iron nanoparticles (nZVI) have been used for groundwater remediation and wastewater treatment due to their high reactivity, high adsorption capacity and nontoxicity. However, side reactions generally occur in tandem with the target contaminants removal process, resulting in poor electron selectivity (ES) of nZVI, and subsequently restricting its commercial application. Major efforts to increase ES of nZVI have been made in recent years. This review's objective is to provide a progress report on the significant developments in nZVI's ES during the past decade. Firstly, the definition of ES and its quantification approaches were documented, and the intrinsic (i.e. particle size, crystallinity, and surface area) and extrinsic factors (i.e. solutions pH, target contaminant concentration, and presence of co-contaminants) affecting the ES of nZVI were reported. The latest techniques for increasing ES were summarized in detail, with reference made to sulfidation, magnetization, carbon loading and other features. Then the mechanisms of those strategies for ES enhancement were described. Finally, some constructive suggestions on future research directions concerning nZVI's ES in the future were proposed.

Enhanced cadmium immobilization by sulfate-mediated microbial zero-valent iron corrosion

A biotic iron (Fe⁰) treatment system combined with mixed microorganisms was applied to remediate cadmium (Cd)-contaminated groundwater under the intervention of sulfate. Due to hydrogenotrophic desulfuration effect, severe iron corrosion was observed in this microbe-collaborative Fe⁰ system according to surface morphology analysis as lots of secondary minerals (e.g. magnetite, green rust and lepidocrocite) were generated, which was essential for Cd(II) adsorption and immobilization. The sulfate-mediated biotic Fe⁰ system thereafter achieved a significantly enhanced Cd(II) removal efficiency of 86.1%, over 3.3 times than that in the abiotic Fe⁰ system. Increasing initial sulfate concentration could improve the removal of cadmium, which further proved that hydrogenotrophic desulfuration played a key role for enhanced Cd removal. According to the experimental results and current reports, the mechanism of Cd(II) removal was revealed into three pathways including adsorption to secondary iron minerals, co-precipitation with iron (hydr)oxides and formation of cadmium sulfide precipitation. Increasing Fe⁰ dosages showed positive correlation to Cd(II) removal and neutral pH was preferred to sulfate-mediated biotic Fe⁰ corrosion. These results indicated that sulfate-mediated biotic Fe⁰ corrosion could greatly relieve the limitation of Fe⁰ in Cd(II) immobilization, which could be a promising method to eliminate Cd(II) pollution from groundwater.

Magnetic biochar derived from rice straw and stainless steel pickling waste liquor for highly efficient adsorption of crystal violet

Reducing the preparation cost of magnetic biochar is necessary for its large-scale application as an adsorbent. In this study, stainless steel pickling waste liquor and rice straw were successfully applied to synthesize of magnetic biochar (SPWL-MBC). Several iron oxides adhered on the biochar matrix, mainly Fe₃O₄, Fe₂O₃ and FeO. SPWL-MBC exhibited superparamagnetism, and its specific surface area was 274.29 m²/g. The material was able to adsorb a model contaminant, crystal violet (CV), with a maximum adsorption capacity of approximately 111.48 mg/g. Adsorption mechanism analysis showed that iron oxides, π-π interaction, hydrogen bonding and electrostatic interaction were responsible for the adsorption of CV. The CV adsorption efficiency of SPWL-MBC remained 71.91% after three adsorption-regeneration cycles. These outcomes illustrate that the magnetic biochar prepared from stainless steel pickling waste liquor can effectively remove CV from wastewater.

Highly efficient remediation of decabromodiphenyl ether-contaminated soil using mechanochemistry in the presence of additive and its mechanism

Mechanochemistry has been proved to be an effective method to remediation of organic-contaminated sites. However, the high ball-to-powder mass ratio (C_R) limits the large-scale application of mechanochemistry. In this study, co-milling additives were introduced to enhance the mechanochemical degradation of decabromodiphenyl ether (BDE209)-contaminated soil under the condition of low C_R. Based on additive screening experiments, sodium borohydride was selected as the ideal additive to assist the mechanochemical degradation of BDE209, and the resulting removal efficiency was approximately 100% with 2 h of ball milling at a rotational speed of 550 rpm. The main degradation intermediates and degradation pathway of BDE209 were identified using gas chromatography-tandem mass spectrometry. It was proposed that the degradation of BDE209 by sodium borohydride-assisted mechanochemistry was a concurrent process of stepwise and multistage debromination. Meanwhile, the meta-bromine atom in BDE209 was more susceptible to debromination than those at the para and ortho positions. The evolution of the concentration of Br^- was monitored by ion chromatography, which revealed that reduction and oxidation both occurred in the removal of BDE209. This paper provides a new perspective for reducing the C_R in the mechanochemical remediation of BDE209-contaminated soil.

N95 respirator decontamination: a study in reusability

The coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) pandemic had caused a severe depletion of the worldwide supply of N95 respirators. The development of methods to effectively decontaminate N95 respirators while maintaining their integrity is crucial for respirator regeneration and reuse. In this study, we systematically evaluated five respirator decontamination methods using vaporized hydrogen peroxide (VHP) or ultraviolet (254 nm wavelength, UVC) radiation. Through testing the bioburden, filtration, fluid resistance, and fit (shape) of the decontaminated respirators, we found that the decontamination methods using BioQuell VHP, custom VHP container, Steris VHP, and Sterrad VHP effectively inactivated Cardiovirus (3-log10 reduction) and bacteria (6-log10 reduction) without compromising the respirator integrity after 2-15 cycles. Hope UVC system was capable of inactivating Cardiovirus (3-log10 reduction) but exhibited relatively poorer bactericidal activity. These methods are capable of decontaminating 10-1000 respirators per batch with varied decontamination times (10-200 min). Our findings show that N95 respirators treated by the previously mentioned decontamination methods are safe and effective for reuse by industry, laboratories, and hospitals.

Synergistic adsorption-photocatalytic degradation of different antibiotics in seawater by a porous g-C3N4/calcined-LDH and its application in synthetic mariculture wastewater

In this work, a modified g-C₃N₄/MgZnAl-calcined layered double hydroxide composite (M-CN/cLDH) was successfully fabricated via a template method. The composite material is a hierarchical porous flower-like nanostructure self-assembled from stacked hybrid flakes. The 3D M-CN/cLDH architectures exhibit a synergistic effect of adsorption and photocatalysis for eliminating typical tetracycline antibiotics in seawater, i.e., oxytetracycline (OTC), tetracycline (TC), chlortetracycline (CTC), and doxycycline (DXC). The synergistic removal rate of OTC in seawater of M-CN/cLDH is 2.73 times higher than that of g-C₃N₄ after 120 min of visible-light illumination, and M-CN/cLDH also performs better adsorption-photocatalytic degradation on OTC in the continuous flow reaction process. The superior adsorption capability of the M-CN/cLDH is attributed to the open porous structures of cLDH, and its excellent photocatalytic degradation activity is ascribed to the closely bonded heterojunctions between g-C₃N₄ (CN) and cLDH double layers. The mass spectra reveals the degradation pathways of OTC, and its byproducts are less toxic after degradation for 120 min. The exploration of the M-CN/cLDH in synthetic mariculture wastewater suggested a huge potential for its practical application. With the assistance of magnesium ammonium phosphate (MAP) precipitation pretreatment, the material can effectively retain the high OTC removal rate in the synthetic mariculture wastewater circumstance.

Sleep Enhances Consolidation of Memory Traces for Complex Problem-Solving Skills

Sleep consolidates memory for procedural motor skills, reflected by sleep-dependent changes in the hippocampal-striatal-cortical network. Other forms of procedural skills require the acquisition of a novel strategy to solve a problem, which recruit overlapping brain regions and specialized areas including the caudate and prefrontal cortex. Sleep preferentially benefits strategy and problem-solving skills over the accompanying motor execution movements. However, it is unclear how acquiring new strategies benefit from sleep. Here, participants performed a task requiring the execution of a sequence of movements to learn a novel cognitive strategy. Participants performed this task while undergoing fMRI before and after an interval of either a full night sleep, a daytime nap, or wakefulness. Participants also performed a motor control task, which precluded the opportunity to learn the strategy. In this way, we subtracted motor execution-related brain activations from activations specific to the strategy. The sleep and nap groups experienced greater behavioral performance improvements compared to the wake group on the strategy-based task. Following sleep, we observed enhanced activation of the caudate in addition to other regions in the hippocampal-striatal-cortical network, compared to wakefulness. This study demonstrates that sleep is a privileged time to enhance newly acquired cognitive strategies needed to solve problems.

An innovative application of follicular unit extraction technique in the treatment of bromhidrosis

BACKGROUND

Surgery is the most effective way to treat bromhidrosis, but postoperative complications are still the biggest obstacles for patients to choose surgical treatment.

OBJECTIVES

To introduce an innovative application of follicular unit extraction (FUE) in the treatment of bromhidrosis.

METHODS

We conducted a case series study on 20 patients who received FUE technique for the treatment of bromhidrosis. The axillary hair follicles were extracted with a one-millimetre punch. The released hair follicles were collected for histological examination. After the operation, the wounds were wrapped with moderate pressure. The dressing was removed 24 h after the FUE operation. The postoperative complications were collected, and the improvement of malodour was evaluated by the 10-point visual analogue scale.

RESULTS

Immediately postoperation, many needle-shaped holes appeared in the armpits. The holes healed 7 days after the operation, with no scar or pinpoint-like scars. Except for a female who complained of mild pain in the left armpit, no other patients had any discomfort. The malodour level varied between 0 and 4 during the follow-up period. The tissue examination showed that more than 90% of the completely plucked hair follicles were accompanied by apocrine glands, and many blocked and dilated apocrine glands were observed. The lumens of the blocked glands were filled with decapitation products, which were positive for K5, Brst-2 and CEA.

CONCLUSIONS

Patients with bromhidrosis have a positive response to FUE technique. The FUE technique is well-tolerated, with only a few postoperative complications, which deserves to be widely promoted.
