Morphology of Buried Interfaces in Ion-Assisted Magnetron Sputter-Deposited 11B4C-Containing Ni/Ti Multilayer Neutron Optics Investigated by Grazing-Incidence Small-Angle Scattering

Multilayer neutron optics require precise control of interface morphology for optimal performance. In this work, we investigate the effects of different growth conditions on the interface morphology of Ni/Ti-based multilayers, with a focus on incorporating low-neutron-absorbing 11B4C and using different ion assistance schemes. Grazing-incidence small-angle X-ray scattering was used to probe the structural and morphological details of buried interfaces, revealing that the layers become more strongly correlated and the interfaces form mounds with increasing amounts of 11B4C. Applying high flux ion assistance during growth can reduce mound formation but lead to interface mixing, while a high flux modulated ion assistance scheme with an initial buffer layer grown at low ion energy and the top layer at higher ion energy prevents intermixing. The optimal condition was found to be adding 26.0 atom % 11B4C combined with high flux modulated ion assistance. A multilayer with a period of 48.2 Å and 100 periods was grown under these conditions, and coupled fitting to neutron and X-ray reflectivity data revealed an average interface width of only 2.7 Å, a significant improvement over the current state-of-the-art commercial Ni/Ti multilayers. Overall, our study demonstrates that the addition of 11B4C and the use of high flux modulated ion assistance during growth can significantly improve the interface morphology of Ni/Ti multilayers, leading to improved neutron optics performance.

3D Printing of Glass Micro-Optics with Subwavelength Features on Optical Fiber Tips

Integration of functional materials and structures on the tips of optical fibers has enabled various applications in micro-optics, such as sensing, imaging, and optical trapping. Direct laser writing is a 3D printing technology that holds promise for fabricating advanced micro-optical structures on fiber tips. To date, material selection has been limited to organic polymer-based photoresists because existing methods for 3D direct laser writing of inorganic materials involve high-temperature processing that is not compatible with optical fibers. However, organic polymers do not feature stability and transparency comparable to those of inorganic glasses. Herein, we demonstrate 3D direct laser writing of inorganic glass with a subwavelength resolution on optical fiber tips. We show two distinct printing modes that enable the printing of solid silica glass structures ("Uniform Mode") and self-organized subwavelength gratings ("Nanograting Mode"), respectively. We illustrate the utility of our approach by printing two functional devices: (1) a refractive index sensor that can measure the indices of binary mixtures of acetone and methanol at near-infrared wavelengths and (2) a compact polarization beam splitter for polarization control and beam steering in an all-in-fiber system. By combining the superior material properties of glass with the plug-and-play nature of optical fibers, this approach enables promising applications in fields such as fiber sensing, optical microelectromechanical systems (MEMS), and quantum photonics.

Tensorial Properties via the Neuroevolution Potential Framework: Fast Simulation of Infrared and Raman Spectra

Infrared and Raman spectroscopy are widely used for the characterization of gases, liquids, and solids, as the spectra contain a wealth of information concerning, in particular, the dynamics of these systems. Atomic scale simulations can be used to predict such spectra but are often severely limited due to high computational cost or the need for strong approximations that limit the application range and reliability. Here, we introduce a machine learning (ML) accelerated approach that addresses these shortcomings and provides a significant performance boost in terms of data and computational efficiency compared with earlier ML schemes. To this end, we generalize the neuroevolution potential approach to enable the prediction of rank one and two tensors to obtain the tensorial neuroevolution potential (TNEP) scheme. We apply the resulting framework to construct models for the dipole moment, polarizability, and susceptibility of molecules, liquids, and solids and show that our approach compares favorably with several ML models from the literature with respect to accuracy and computational efficiency. Finally, we demonstrate the application of the TNEP approach to the prediction of infrared and Raman spectra of liquid water, a molecule (PTAF-), and a prototypical perovskite with strong anharmonicity (BaZrO3). The TNEP approach is implemented in the free and open source software package gpumd, which makes this methodology readily available to the scientific community.

Effects of Gas Layer Thickness on Capillary Interactions at Superhydrophobic Surfaces

Strongly attractive forces act between superhydrophobic surfaces across water due to the formation of a bridging gas capillary. Upon separation, the attraction can range up to tens of micrometers as the gas capillary grows, while gas molecules accumulate in the capillary. We argue that most of these molecules come from the pre-existing gaseous layer found at and within the superhydrophobic coating. In this study, we investigate how the capillary size and the resulting capillary forces are affected by the thickness of the gaseous layer. To this end, we prepared superhydrophobic coatings with different thicknesses by utilizing different numbers of coating cycles of a liquid flame spraying technique. Laser scanning confocal microscopy confirmed an increase in gas layer thickness with an increasing number of coating cycles. Force measurements between such coatings and a hydrophobic colloidal probe revealed attractive forces caused by bridging gas capillaries, and both the capillary size and the range of attraction increased with increasing thickness of the pre-existing gas layer. Hence, our data suggest that the amount of available gas at and in the superhydrophobic coating determines the force range and capillary growth.

Machine Learning for Polaritonic Chemistry: Accessing Chemical Kinetics

Altering chemical reactivity and material structure in confined optical environments is on the rise, and yet, a conclusive understanding of the microscopic mechanisms remains elusive. This originates mostly from the fact that accurately predicting vibrational and reactive dynamics for soluted ensembles of realistic molecules is no small endeavor, and adding (collective) strong light-matter interaction does not simplify matters. Here, we establish a framework based on a combination of machine learning (ML) models, trained using density-functional theory calculations and molecular dynamics to accelerate such simulations. We then apply this approach to evaluate strong coupling, changes in reaction rate constant, and their influence on enthalpy and entropy for the deprotection reaction of 1-phenyl-2-trimethylsilylacetylene, which has been studied previously both experimentally and using ab initio simulations. While we find qualitative agreement with critical experimental observations, especially with regard to the changes in kinetics, we also find differences in comparison with previous theoretical predictions. The features for which the ML-accelerated and ab initio simulations agree show the experimentally estimated kinetic behavior. Conflicting features indicate that a contribution of dynamic electronic polarization to the reaction process is more relevant than currently believed. Our work demonstrates the practical use of ML for polaritonic chemistry, discusses limitations of common approximations, and paves the way for a more holistic description of polaritonic chemistry.

Small-Angle Neutron Scattering Insights into 2-Ethylhexyl Laurate: A Remarkable Bioester

Commercial (protiated) samples of the "green" and biodegradable bioester 2-ethylhexyl laurate (2-EHL) were mixed with D-2-EHL synthesized by hydrothermal deuteration, with the mixtures demonstrating bulk structuring in small-angle neutron scattering measurements. Analysis in a polymer scattering framework yielded a radius of gyration (Rg) of 6.5 Å and a Kuhn length (alternatively described as the persistence length or average segment length) of 11.2 Å. Samples of 2-EHL dispersed in acetonitrile formed self-assembled structures exceeding the molecular dimensions of the 2-EHL, with a mean aggregation number (Nagg) of 3.5 ± 0.2 molecules across the tested concentrations. We therefore present structural evidence that this ester can function as a nonionic (co)surfactant. The available surfactant-like conformations appear to enable performance beyond the low calculated hydrophilic-lipophilic balance value of 2.9. Overall, our data offer an explanation for 2-EHL's interfacial adsorption properties via self-assembly, resulting in strong emolliency and lubricity for this sustainable ester-based bio-oil.

Multitracer Approach to Understanding the Complexity of Reactive Astrogliosis in Alzheimer's Brains

A monoamine oxidase B (MAO-B) selective positron emission tomography (PET) tracer [11C]-deuterium-l-deprenyl holds promise for imaging reactive astrogliosis in neurodegenerative diseases, such as Alzheimer's disease (AD). Two novel PET tracers ([11C]-BU99008 and [18F]-SMBT-1) have recently been developed to assess the complexity of reactive astrogliosis in the AD continuum. We have investigated the binding properties of SMBT-1, l-deprenyl, and BU99008 in AD and cognitively normal control (CN) brains. Competition binding assays with [3H]-l-deprenyl and [3H]-BU99008 versus unlabeled SMBT-1 in postmortem AD and CN temporal and frontal cortex brains demonstrated that SMBT-1 interacted with [3H]-deprenyl at a single binding site (nM range) and with [3H]-BU99008 at multiple binding sites (from nM to μM). Autoradiography studies on large frozen postmortem AD and CN hemisphere brain sections demonstrated that 1 μM SMBT-1 almost completely displaced the [3H]-l-deprenyl binding (>90%), while SMBT-1 only partly displaced the [3H]-BU99008 binding (50-60% displacement) in cortical regions. In conclusion, SMBT-1, l-deprenyl, and BU99008 interact at the same MAO-B binding site, while BU99008 shows an additional independent binding site in AD and CN brains. The high translational power of our studies in human AD and CN brains suggests that the multitracer approach with SMBT-1, l-deprenyl, and BU99008 could be useful for imaging reactive astrogliosis.

High-Performance Multiwavelength GaNAs Single Nanowire Lasers

In this study, we report a significant enhancement in the performance of GaNAs-based single nanowire lasers through optimization of growth conditions, leading to a lower lasing threshold and higher operation temperatures. Our analysis reveals that these improvements in the laser performance can be attributed to a decrease in the density of localized states within the material. Furthermore, we demonstrate that owing to their excellent nonlinear optical properties, these nanowires support self-frequency conversion of the stimulated emission through second harmonic generation (SHG) and sum-frequency generation (SFG), providing coherent light emission in the cyan-green range. Mode-specific differences in the self-conversion efficiency are revealed and explained by differences in the light extraction efficiency of the converted light caused by the electric field distribution of the fundamental modes. Our work, therefore, facilitates the design and development of multiwavelength coherent light generation and higher-temperature operation of GaNAs nanowire lasers, which will be useful in the fields of optical communications, sensing, and nanophotonics.

Fluorescence Bar-Coding and Flowmetry Based on Dark State Transitions in Fluorescence Emitters

Reversible dark state transitions in fluorophores represent a limiting factor in fluorescence-based ultrasensitive spectroscopy, are a necessary basis for fluorescence-based super-resolution imaging, but may also offer additional, largely orthogonal fluorescence-based readout parameters. In this work, we analyzed the blinking kinetics of Cyanine5 (Cy5) as a bar-coding feature distinguishing Cy5 from rhodamine fluorophores having largely overlapping emission spectra. First, fluorescence correlation spectroscopy (FCS) solution measurements on mixtures of free fluorophores and fluorophore-labeled small unilamellar vesicles (SUVs) showed that Cy5 could be readily distinguished from the rhodamines by its reversible, largely excitation-driven trans-cis isomerization. This was next confirmed by transient state (TRAST) spectroscopy measurements, determining the fluorophore dark state kinetics in a more robust manner, from how the time-averaged fluorescence intensity varies upon modulation of the applied excitation light. TRAST was then combined with wide-field imaging of live cells, whereby Cy5 and rhodamine fluorophores could be distinguished on a whole cell level as well as in spatially resolved, multiplexed images of the cells. Finally, we established a microfluidic TRAST concept and showed how different mixtures of free Cy5 and rhodamine fluorophores and corresponding fluorophore-labeled SUVs could be distinguished on-the-fly when passing through a microfluidic channel. In contrast to FCS, TRAST does not rely on single-molecule detection conditions or a high time resolution and is thus broadly applicable to different biological samples. Therefore, we expect that the bar-coding concept presented in this work can offer an additional useful strategy for fluorescence-based multiplexing that can be implemented on a broad range of both stationary and moving samples.

Preparation and Characterization of Softwood and Hardwood Nanofibril Hydrogels: Toward Wound Dressing Applications

Hydrogels of cellulose nanofibrils (CNFs) are promising wound dressing candidates due to their biocompatibility, high water absorption, and transparency. Herein, two different commercially available wood species, softwood and hardwood, were subjected to TEMPO-mediated oxidation to proceed with delignification and oxidation in a one-pot process, and thereafter, nanofibrils were isolated using a high-pressure microfluidizer. Furthermore, transparent nanofibril hydrogel networks were prepared by vacuum filtration. Nanofibril properties and network performance correlated with oxidation were investigated and compared with commercially available TEMPO-oxidized pulp nanofibrils and their networks. Softwood nanofibril hydrogel networks exhibited the best mechanical properties, and in vitro toxicological risk assessment showed no detrimental effect for any of the studied hydrogels on human fibroblast or keratinocyte cells. This study demonstrates a straightforward processing route for direct oxidation of different wood species to obtain nanofibril hydrogels for potential use as wound dressings, with softwood having the most potential.

Identification and Imaging of Prostaglandin Isomers Utilizing MS3 Product Ions and Silver Cationization

Prostaglandins (PGs) are important lipid mediators involved in physiological processes, such as inflammation and pregnancy. The pleiotropic effects of the PG isomers and their differential expression from cell types impose the necessity for studying individual isomers locally in tissue to understand the molecular mechanisms. Currently, mass spectrometry (MS)-based analytical workflows for determining the PG isomers typically require homogenization of the sample and a separation method, which results in a loss of spatial information. Here, we describe a method exploiting the cationization of PGs with silver ions for enhanced sensitivity and tandem MS to distinguish the biologically relevant PG isomers PGE2, PGD2, and Δ12-PGD2. The developed method utilizes characteristic product ions in MS3 for training prediction models and is compatible with direct infusion approaches. We discuss insights into the fragmentation pathways of Ag+ cationized PGs during collision-induced dissociation and demonstrate the high accuracy and robustness of the model to predict isomeric compositions of PGs. The developed method is applied to mass spectrometry imaging (MSI) of mouse uterus implantation sites using silver-doped pneumatically assisted nanospray desorption electrospray ionization and indicates localization to the antimesometrial pole and the luminal epithelium of all isomers with different abundances. Overall, we demonstrate, for the first time, isomeric imaging of major PG isomers with a simple method that is compatible with liquid-based extraction MSI methods.

Effect of Different In2O3(111) Surface Terminations on CO2 Adsorption

In2O3-based catalysts have shown high activity and selectivity for CO2 hydrogenation to methanol; however, the origin of the high performance of In2O3 is still unclear. To elucidate the initial steps of CO2 hydrogenation over In2O3, we have combined X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy and density functional theory calculations to study the adsorption of CO2 on the In2O3(111) crystalline surface with different terminations, namely, the stoichiometric, reduced, and hydroxylated surface. The combined approach confirms that the reduction of the surface results in the formation of In adatoms and that water dissociates on the surface at room temperature. A comparison of the experimental spectra and the computed core-level shifts (using methanol and formic acid as benchmark molecules) suggests that CO2 adsorbs as a carbonate on all three surface terminations. We find that the adsorption of CO2 is hindered by hydroxyl groups on the hydroxylated surface.

Live Detection of Neural Progenitors and Glioblastoma Cells by an Oligothiophene Derivative

There is an urgent need for simple and non-invasive identification of live neural stem/progenitor cells (NSPCs) in the developing and adult brain as well as in disease, such as in brain tumors, due to the potential clinical importance in prognosis, diagnosis, and treatment of diseases of the nervous system. Here, we report a luminescent conjugated oligothiophene (LCO), named p-HTMI, for non-invasive and non-amplified real-time detection of live human patient-derived glioblastoma (GBM) stem cell-like cells and NSPCs. While p-HTMI stained only a small fraction of other cell types investigated, the mere addition of p-HTMI to the cell culture resulted in efficient detection of NSPCs or GBM cells from rodents and humans within minutes. p-HTMI is functionalized with a methylated imidazole moiety resembling the side chain of histidine/histamine, and non-methylated analogues were not functional. Cell sorting experiments of human GBM cells demonstrated that p-HTMI labeled the same cell population as CD271, a proposed marker for stem cell-like cells and rapidly migrating cells in glioblastoma. Our results suggest that the LCO p-HTMI is a versatile tool for immediate and selective detection of neural and glioma stem and progenitor cells.

A Microshutter for the Nanofabrication of Plasmonic Metal Alloys with Single Nanoparticle Composition Control

Alloying offers an increasingly important handle in nanomaterials design in addition to the already widely explored size and geometry of nanostructures of interest. As the key trait, the mixing of elements at the atomic level enables nanomaterials with physical or chemical properties that cannot be obtained by a single element alone, and subtle compositional variations can significantly impact these properties. Alongside the great potential of alloying, the experimental scrutiny of its impact on nanomaterial function is a challenge because the parameter space that encompasses nanostructure size, geometry, chemical composition, and structural atomic-level differences among individuals is vast and requires unrealistically large sample sets if statistically relevant and systematic data are to be obtained. To address this challenge, we have developed a microshutter device for spatially highly resolved physical vapor deposition in the lithography-based fabrication of nanostructured surfaces. As we demonstrate, it enables establishing compositional gradients across a surface with single nanostructure resolution in terms of alloy composition, which subsequently can be probed in a single experiment. As a showcase, we have nanofabricated arrays of AuAg, AuPd, and AgPd alloy nanoparticles with compositions systematically controlled at the level of single particle rows, as verified by energy dispersive X-ray and single particle plasmonic nanospectroscopy measurements, which we also compared to finite-difference time-domain simulations. Finally, motivated by their application in state-of-the-art plasmonic hydrogen sensors, we investigated PdAu alloy gradient arrays for their hydrogen sorption properties. We found distinctly composition-dependent kinetics and hysteresis and revealed a composition-dependent contribution of a single nanoparticle response to the ensemble average, which highlights the importance of alloy composition screening in single experiments with single nanoparticle resolution, as offered by the microshutter nanofabrication approach.

Screen-Printed Corrosion-Resistant and Long-Term Stable Stretchable Electronics Based on AgAu Microflake Conductors

High-throughput production methods such as screen printing can bring stretchable electronics out of the lab into the market. Most stretchable conductor inks for screen printing are based on silver nanoparticles or flakes due to their favorable performance-to-cost ratio, but silver is prone to tarnishing and corrosion, thereby limiting the stability of such conductors. Here, we report on a cost-efficient and scalable approach to resolve this issue by developing screen printable inks based on silver flakes chemically coated by a thin layer of gold. The printed stretchable AgAu conductors reach a conductivity of 8500 S cm^-1, remain conductive up to 250% strain, show excellent corrosion and tarnishing stability, and are used to demonstrate wearable LED and NFC circuits. The reported approach is attractive for smart clothing, as the long-term functionality of such devices is expected in a variety of environments.

Rolling Circle Amplification on a Bead: Improving the Detection Time for a Magnetic Bioassay

Detection of pathogens has become increasingly important, especially in the face of outbreaks and epidemics all over the world. Nucleic acid detection techniques provide a solid base to detect and identify pathogens. In recent years, magnetic sensors and magnetic labels have become of more interest due to their simplicity of use, low cost, and versatility. In this work, we have used the isothermal DNA amplification technique of rolling circle amplification (RCA) in combination with oligo-functionalized magnetic nanoparticles. Detection of RCA products takes place through specific binding between magnetic nanoparticles and RCA products. Upon binding, the relaxation frequency of the nanoparticle changes. This change was measured using an AC susceptometer. We showcase that the RCA time can be reduced for a quicker assay when performing the RCA on the surface of micrometer-sized beads, which consequently increases the hydrodynamic volume of the RCA products. This, in turn, increases the Brownian relaxation frequency shift of the nanoparticles upon binding. We performed optimization work to determine the ideal quantity of micrometer-sized particles, oligo-functionalized nanoparticles, and the amplification time of the RCA. We show that the detection of 0.75 fmol of preamplification synthetic target is possible with only 20 min of amplification time. Finally, we showcase the high specificity of the assay, as the functionalized nanoparticles are unable to bind to amplified DNA that does not match their labels. Overall, this paves the way for a simple bioassay that can be used without expensive laboratory equipment for detection of pathogens in outbreak settings and clinics around the world.

Time-Resolved Thickness and Shape-Change Quantification using a Dual-Band Nanoplasmonic Ruler with Sub-Nanometer Resolution

Time-resolved measurements of changes in the size and shape of nanobiological objects and layers are crucial to understand their properties and optimize their performance. Optical sensing is particularly attractive with high throughput and sensitivity, and label-free operation. However, most state-of-the-art solutions require intricate modeling or multiparameter measurements to disentangle conformational or thickness changes of biomolecular layers from complex interfacial refractive index variations. Here, we present a dual-band nanoplasmonic ruler comprising mixed arrays of plasmonic nanoparticles with spectrally separated resonance peaks. As electrodynamic simulations and model experiments show, the ruler enables real-time simultaneous measurements of thickness and refractive index variations in uniform and heterogeneous layers with sub-nanometer resolution. Additionally, nanostructure shape changes can be tracked, as demonstrated by quantifying the degree of lipid vesicle deformation at the critical coverage prior to rupture and supported lipid bilayer formation. In a broader context, the presented nanofabrication approach constitutes a generic route for multimodal nanoplasmonic optical sensing.

Nanometric Moiré Stripes on the Surface of Bi2Se3 Topological Insulator

Mismatch between adjacent atomic layers in low-dimensional materials, generating moiré patterns, has recently emerged as a suitable method to tune electronic properties by inducing strong electron correlations and generating novel phenomena. Beyond graphene, van der Waals structures such as three-dimensional (3D) topological insulators (TIs) appear as ideal candidates for the study of these phenomena due to the weak coupling between layers. Here we discover and investigate the origin of 1D moiré stripes on the surface of Bi₂Se₃ TI thin films and nanobelts. Scanning tunneling microscopy and high-resolution transmission electron microscopy reveal a unidirectional strained top layer, in the range 14-25%, with respect to the relaxed bulk structure, which cannot be ascribed to the mismatch with the substrate lattice but rather to strain induced by a specific growth mechanism. The 1D stripes are characterized by a spatial modulation of the local density of states, which is strongly enhanced compared to the bulk system. Density functional theory calculations confirm the experimental findings, showing that the TI surface Dirac cone is preserved in the 1D moiré stripes, as expected from the topology, though with a heavily renormalized Fermi velocity that also changes between the top and valley of the stripes. The strongly enhanced density of surface states in the TI 1D moiré superstructure can be instrumental in promoting strong correlations in the topological surface states, which can be responsible for surface magnetism and topological superconductivity.

Novel Class of Rhenium Borides Based on Hexagonal Boron Networks Interconnected by Short B2 Dumbbells

Transition metal borides are known due to their attractive mechanical, electronic, refractive, and other properties. A new class of rhenium borides was identified by synchrotron single-crystal X-ray diffraction experiments in laser-heated diamond anvil cells between 26 and 75 GPa. Recoverable to ambient conditions, compounds rhenium triboride (ReB₃) and rhenium tetraboride (ReB₄) consist of close-packed single layers of rhenium atoms alternating with boron networks built from puckered hexagonal layers, which link short bonded (∼1.7 Å) axially oriented B₂ dumbbells. The short and incompressible Re-B and B-B bonds oriented along the hexagonal c-axis contribute to low axial compressibility comparable with the linear compressibility of diamond. Sub-millimeter samples of ReB₃ and ReB₄ were synthesized in a large-volume press at pressures as low as 33 GPa and used for material characterization. Crystals of both compounds are metallic and hard (Vickers hardness, H _V = 34(3) GPa). Geometrical, crystal-chemical, and theoretical analysis considerations suggest that potential ReB _x compounds with x > 4 can be based on the same principle of structural organization as in ReB₃ and ReB₄ and possess similar mechanical and electronic properties.

Nanofluidic Trapping of Faceted Colloidal Nanocrystals for Parallel Single-Particle Catalysis

Catalyst activity can depend distinctly on nanoparticle size and shape. Therefore, understanding the structure sensitivity of catalytic reactions is of fundamental and technical importance. Experiments with single-particle resolution, where ensemble-averaging is eliminated, are required to study it. Here, we implement the selective trapping of individual spherical, cubic, and octahedral colloidal Au nanocrystals in 100 parallel nanofluidic channels to determine their activity for fluorescein reduction by sodium borohydride using fluorescence microscopy. As the main result, we identify distinct structure sensitivity of the rate-limiting borohydride oxidation step originating from different edge site abundance on the three particle types, as confirmed by first-principles calculations. This advertises nanofluidic reactors for the study of structure-function correlations in catalysis and identifies nanoparticle shape as a key factor in borohydride-mediated catalytic reactions.

Engineering Surfaces with Immune Modulating Properties of Mucin Hydrogels

Hydrogels of cross-linked mucin glycoproteins (Muc-gel) have shown strong immune-modulating properties toward macrophages in vitro, which are translated in vivo by the dampening of the foreign body response to implantation in mice. Beyond mucin hydrogels, other biomaterials such as sensors, electrodes, and other long-term implants would also benefit from such immune-modulating properties. In this work, we aimed to transfer the bioactivity observed for three-dimensional Muc-gels to the surface of two model materials by immobilizing mucin into thin films (Muc-film) using covalent layer-by-layer assembly. We tested how the surface immobilization of mucins affects macrophage responses compared to Muc-gels. We showed that Muc-films on soft polyacrylamide gels mimic Muc-gel in their modulation of macrophage responses with activated gene expression of inflammatory cytokines on day 1 and then dampening them on day 3. Also, the markers of polarized macrophages, M1 and M2, were expressed at the same level for macrophages on Muc-film-coated soft polyacrylamide gels and Muc-gel. In contrast, Muc-film-coated hard polystyrene led to a different macrophage response compared to Muc-gel, having no activated expression of inflammatory cytokines and a different M1 marker expression. This suggested that the substrate mechanical properties and mucin molecular configuration determined by substrate-mucin interactions affect mucin immune-modulating properties. We conclude that mucin immune-modulating properties can be transferred to materials by mucin surface immobilization but will be dependent on the substrate chemical and mechanical properties.

Structurally Colored Cellulose Nanocrystal Films as Transreflective Radiative Coolers

Radiative cooling forms an emerging direction in which objects are passively cooled via thermal radiation to cold space. Cooling materials should provide high thermal emissivity (infrared absorptance) and low solar absorptance, making cellulose an ideal and sustainable candidate. Broadband solar-reflective or transparent coolers are not the only systems of interest, but also more pleasingly looking colored systems. However, solutions based on wavelength-selective absorption generate not only color but also heat and thereby counteract the cooling function. Intended as coatings for solar cells, we demonstrate a transreflective cellulose material with minimal solar absorption that generates color by wavelength-selective reflection, while it transmits other parts of the solar spectrum. Our solution takes advantage of the ability of cellulose nanocrystals to self-assemble into helical periodic structures, providing nonabsorptive films with structurally colored reflection. Application of violet-blue, green, and red cellulose films on silicon substrates reduced the temperature by up to 9 °C under solar illumination, as result of a combination of radiative cooling and reduced solar absorption due to the wavelength-selective reflection by the colored coating. The present work establishes self-assembled cellulose nanocrystal photonic films as a scalable photonic platform for colored radiative cooling.

Depth-Resolved FTIR-ATR Imaging Studies of Coating Degradation during Accelerated and Natural Weathering-Influence of Biobased Reactive Diluents in Polyester Melamine Coil Coating

Improved methods to assess the degradation of coil coatings to approximate lifetime have been an area of academic and industrial interest for decades. This work aims to elucidate the differences in the degradation behavior of two coil coating systems: one standard commercial formulation and one formulation with a significant addition of biorenewable reactive diluents. Depth-resolved degradation behavior of samples exposed to accelerated and natural field weathering is assessed. Focal plane array attenuated total reflection-Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy was used to acquire high-resolution chemical data from a sloping cross section. The results agreed with conventional photoacoustic spectroscopy. Degradation profiles for the two coatings were significantly different, with the biobased samples showing a more durable behavior. This study provides a method for detailed assessment of coating degradation, giving a good estimation of its durability. This is both a way to compare the performance of coating systems and to improve the understanding of the impact of exposure conditions, paving the way for the development of more sustainable coil coatings.

Droplet Impact on Asymmetric Hydrophobic Microstructures

Textured hydrophobic surfaces that repel liquid droplets unidirectionally are found in nature such as butterfly wings and ryegrass leaves and are also essential in technological processes such as self-cleaning and anti-icing. In many occasions, surface textures are oriented to direct rebounding droplets. Surface macrostructures (>100 μm) have often been explored to induce directional rebound. However, the influence of impact speed and detailed surface geometry on rebound is vaguely understood, particularly for small microstructures. Here, we study, using a high-speed camera, droplet impact on surfaces with inclined micropillars. We observed directional rebound at high impact speeds on surfaces with dense arrays of pillars. We attribute this asymmetry to the difference in wetting behavior of the structure sidewalls, causing slower retraction of the contact line in the direction against the inclination compared to with the inclination. The experimental observations are complemented with numerical simulations to elucidate the detailed movement of the drops over the pillars. These insights improve our understanding of droplet impact on hydrophobic microstructures and may be useful for designing structured surfaces for controlling droplet mobility.

High Performance Full-Inorganic Flexible Memristor with Combined Resistance-Switching

Flexible memristors hold great promise for flexible electronics applications but are still lacking of good electrical performance together with mechanical flexibility. Herein, we demonstrate a full-inorganic nanoscale flexible memristor by using free-standing ductile α-Ag₂S films as both a flexible substrate and a functional electrolyte. The device accesses dense multiple-level nonvolatile states with a record high 10⁶ ON/OFF ratio. This exceptional memristor performance is induced by sequential processes of Schottky barrier modification at the contact interface and filament formation inside the electrolyte. In addition, it is crucial to ensure that the cathode junction, where Ag⁺ is reduced to Ag, dominates the total resistance and takes the most of setting bias before the filament formation. Our study provides a comprehensive insight into the resistance-switching mechanism in conductive-bridging memristors and offers a new strategy toward high performance flexible memristors.

Imaging Fluorescence Blinking of a Mitochondrial Localization Probe: Cellular Localization Probes Turned into Multifunctional Sensors

Mitochondrial membranes and their microenvironments directly influence and reflect cellular metabolic states but are difficult to probe on site in live cells. Here, we demonstrate a strategy, showing how the widely used mitochondrial membrane localization fluorophore 10-nonyl acridine orange (NAO) can be transformed into a multifunctional probe of membrane microenvironments by monitoring its blinking kinetics. By transient state (TRAST) studies of NAO in small unilamellar vesicles (SUVs), together with computational simulations, we found that NAO exhibits prominent reversible singlet-triplet state transitions and can act as a light-induced Lewis acid forming a red-emissive doublet radical. The resulting blinking kinetics are highly environment-sensitive, specifically reflecting local membrane oxygen concentrations, redox conditions, membrane charge, fluidity, and lipid compositions. Here, not only cardiolipin concentration but also the cardiolipin acyl chain composition was found to strongly influence the NAO blinking kinetics. The blinking kinetics also reflect hydroxyl ion-dependent transitions to and from the fluorophore doublet radical, closely coupled to the proton-transfer events in the membranes, local pH, and two- and three-dimensional buffering properties on and above the membranes. Following the SUV studies, we show by TRAST imaging that the fluorescence blinking properties of NAO can be imaged in live cells in a spatially resolved manner. Generally, the demonstrated blinking imaging strategy can transform existing fluorophore markers into multiparametric sensors reflecting conditions of large biological relevance, which are difficult to retrieve by other means. This opens additional possibilities for fundamental membrane studies in lipid vesicles and live cells.

Merging Directed C-H Activations with High-Throughput Experimentation: Development of Iridium-Catalyzed C-H Aminations Applicable to Late-Stage Functionalization

Herein, we report an iridium-catalyzed directed C-H amination methodology developed using a high-throughput experimentation (HTE)-based strategy, applicable for the needs of automated modern drug discovery. The informer library approach for investigating the accessible directing group chemical space, in combination with functional group tolerance screening and substrate scope investigations, allowed for the generation of reaction application guidelines to aid future users. Applicability to late-stage functionalization of complex drugs and natural products, in combination with multiple deprotection protocols leading to the desirable aniline matched pairs, serve to demonstrate the utility of the method for drug discovery. Finally, reaction miniaturization to a nanomolar range highlights the opportunities for more sustainable screening with decreased material consumption.

Bidirectional Hydrogen Electrocatalysis on Epitaxial Graphene

The climate change due to human activities stimulates the research on new energy resources. Hydrogen has attracted interest as a green carrier of high energy density. The sustainable production of hydrogen is achievable only by water electrolysis based on the hydrogen evolution reaction (HER). Graphitic materials are widely utilized in this technology in the role of conductive catalyst supports. Herein, by performing dynamic and steady-state electrochemical measurements in acidic and alkaline media, we investigated the bidirectional electrocatalysis of the HER and hydrogen oxidation reaction (HOR) on metal- and defect-free epigraphene (EG) grown on 4H silicon carbide (4H-SiC) as a ground level of structural organization of general graphitic materials. The absence of any signal degradation illustrates the high stability of EG. The experimental and theoretical investigations yield the coherent conclusion on the dominant HER pathway following the Volmer-Tafel mechanism. We ascribe the observed reactivity of EG to its interaction with the underlying SiC substrate that induces strain and electronic doping. The computed high activation energy for breaking the O-H bond is linked to the high negative overpotential of the HER. The estimated exchange current of HER/HOR on EG can be used in the evaluation of complex electrocatalytic systems based on graphite as a conducing support.

Termination-Accelerated Electrochemical Nitrogen Fixation on Single-Atom Catalysts Supported by MXenes

The synthesis of ammonia (NH₃) from nitrogen (N₂) under ambient conditions is of great significance but hindered by the lack of highly efficient catalysts. By performing first-principles calculations, we have investigated the feasibility for employing a transition metal (TM) atom, supported on Ti₃C₂T₂ MXene with O/OH terminations, as a single-atom catalyst (SAC) for electrochemical nitrogen reduction. The potential catalytic performance of TM single atoms is evaluated by their adsorption behavior on the MXene, together with their ability to bind N₂ and to desorb NH₃ molecules. Of importance, the OH terminations on Ti₃C₂T₂ MXene can effectively enhance the N₂ adsorption and decrease the NH₃ adsorption for single atoms. Based on proposed criteria for promising SACs, our calculations further demonstrate that the Ni/Ti₃C₂O_0.19(OH)_1.81 exhibits reasonable thermodynamics and kinetics toward electrochemical nitrogen reduction.

Method Matters: Exploring Alkoxysulfonate-Functionalized Poly(3,4-ethylenedioxythiophene) and Its Unintentional Self-Aggregating Copolymer toward Injectable Bioelectronics

Injectable bioelectronics could become an alternative or a complement to traditional drug treatments. To this end, a new self-doped p-type conducting PEDOT-S copolymer (A5) was synthesized. This copolymer formed highly water-dispersed nanoparticles and aggregated into a mixed ion-electron conducting hydrogel when injected into a tissue model. First, we synthetically repeated most of the published methods for PEDOT-S at the lab scale. Surprisingly, analysis using high-resolution matrix-assisted laser desorption ionization-mass spectroscopy showed that almost all the methods generated PEDOT-S derivatives with the same polymer lengths (i.e., oligomers, seven to eight monomers in average); thus, the polymer length cannot account for the differences in the conductivities reported earlier. The main difference, however, was that some methods generated an unintentional copolymer P(EDOT-S/EDOT-OH) that is more prone to aggregate and display higher conductivities in general than the PEDOT-S homopolymer. Based on this, we synthesized the PEDOT-S derivative A5, that displayed the highest film conductivity (33 S cm^-1) among all PEDOT-S derivatives synthesized. Injecting A5 nanoparticles into the agarose gel cast with a physiological buffer generated a stable and highly conductive hydrogel (1-5 S cm^-1), where no conductive structures were seen in agarose with the other PEDOT-S derivatives. Furthermore, the ion-treated A5 hydrogel remained stable and maintained initial conductivities for 7 months (the longest period tested) in pure water, and A5 mixed with Fe₃O₄ nanoparticles generated a magnetoconductive relay device in water. Thus, we have successfully synthesized a water-processable, syringe-injectable, and self-doped PEDOT-S polymer capable of forming a conductive hydrogel in tissue mimics, thereby paving a way for future applications within in vivo electronics.

Membrane Sampling Separates Naphthenic Acids from Biogenic Dissolved Organic Matter for Direct Analysis by Mass Spectrometry

Oil sands process waters can release toxic naphthenic acids (NAs) into aquatic environments. Analytical techniques for NAs are challenged by sample complexity and interference from naturally occurring dissolved organic matter (DOM). Herein, we report the use of a poly(dimethylsiloxane) (PDMS) polymer membrane for the on-line separation of NAs from DOM and use direct infusion electrospray ionization mass spectrometry to yield meaningful qualitative and quantitative information with minimal sample cleanup. We compare the composition of membrane-permeable species from natural waters fortified with a commercial NA mixture to those derived from weak anion exchange solid-phase extraction (SPE) using high-resolution mass spectrometry. The results show that SPE retains a wide range of carboxylic acids, including biogenic DOM, while permeation through PDMS was selective for petrogenic classically defined NAs (C_nH_2n+zO₂). A series of model compounds (log K_ow ∼1-7) were used to characterize the perm-selectivity and reveal the separation is based on hydrophobicity. This convenient sample cleanup method is selective for the O₂ class of NAs and can be used prior to conventional analysis or as an on-line analytical strategy when coupled directly to mass spectrometry.

Dissimilar Deformation of Fluid- and Gel-Phase Liposomes upon Multivalent Interaction with Cell Membrane Mimics Revealed Using Dual-Wavelength Surface Plasmon Resonance

The mechanical properties of biological nanoparticles play a crucial role in their interaction with the cellular membrane, in particular for cellular uptake. This has significant implications for the design of pharmaceutical carrier particles. In this context, liposomes have become increasingly popular, among other reasons due to their customizability and easily varied physicochemical properties. With currently available methods, it is, however, not trivial to characterize the mechanical properties of nanoscopic liposomes especially with respect to the level of deformation induced upon their ligand-receptor-mediated interaction with laterally fluid cellular membranes. Here, we utilize the sensitivity of dual-wavelength surface plasmon resonance to probe the size and shape of bound liposomes (∼100 nm in diameter) as a means to quantify receptor-induced deformation during their interaction with a supported cell membrane mimic. By comparing biotinylated liposomes in gel and fluid phases, we demonstrate that fluid-phase liposomes are more prone to deformation than their gel-phase counterparts upon binding to the cell membrane mimic and that, as expected, the degree of deformation depends on the number of ligand-receptor pairs that are engaged in the multivalent binding.

Effect of the Ancillary Ligand on the Performance of Heteroleptic Cu(I) Diimine Complexes as Dyes in Dye-Sensitized Solar Cells

A series of heteroleptic Cu(I) diimine complexes with different ancillary ligands and 6,6'-dimethyl-2,2'-bipyridine-4,4'-dibenzoic acid (dbda) as the anchoring ligand were self-assembled on TiO₂ surfaces and used as dyes for dye-sensitized solar cells (DSSCs). The binding to the TiO₂ surface was studied by hard X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy for a bromine-containing complex, confirming the complex formation. The performance of all complexes was assessed and rationalized on the basis of their respective ancillary ligand. The DSSC photocurrent-voltage characteristics, incident photon-to-current conversion efficiency (IPCE) spectra, and calculated lowest unoccupied molecular orbital (LUMO) distributions collectively show a push-pull structural dye design, in which the ancillary ligand exhibits an electron-donating effect that can lead to improved solar cell performance. By analyzing the optical properties of the dyes and their solar cell performance, we can conclude that the presence of ancillary ligands with bulky substituents protects the Cu(I) metal center from solvent coordination constituting a critical factor in the design of efficient Cu(I)-based dyes. Moreover, we have identified some components in the I^-/I₃ ^--based electrolyte that causes dissociation of the ancillary ligand, i.e., TiO₂ photoelectrode bleaching. Finally, the detailed studies on one of the dyes revealed an electrolyte-dye interaction, leading to a dramatic change of the dye properties when adsorbed on the TiO₂ surface.

Improved Electrostatics through Digital Etch Schemes in Vertical GaSb Nanowire p-MOSFETs on Si

Sb-based semiconductors are critical p-channel materials for III-V complementary metal oxide semiconductor (CMOS) technology, while the performance of Sb-based metal-oxide-semiconductor field-effect transistors (MOSFETs) is typically inhibited by the low quality of the channel to gate dielectric interface, which leads to poor gate modulation. In this study, we achieve improved electrostatics of vertical GaSb nanowire p-channel MOSFETs by employing robust digital etch (DE) schemes, prior to high-κ deposition. Two different processes, based on buffer-oxide etcher (BOE) 30:1 and HCl:IPA 1:10, are compared. We demonstrate that water-based BOE 30:1, which is a common etchant in Si-based CMOS process, gives an equally controllable etching for GaSb nanowires compared to alcohol-based HCl:IPA, thereby realizing III-V on Si with the same etchant selection. Both DE chemicals show good interface quality of GaSb with a substantial reduction in Sb oxides for both etchants while the HCl:IPA resulted in a stronger reduction in the Ga oxides, as determined by X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy and in agreement with the electrical characterization. By implementing these DE schemes into vertical GaSb nanowire MOSFETs, a subthreshold swing of 107 mV/dec is obtained in the HCl:IPA pretreated sample, which is state of the art compared to reported Sb-based MOSFETs, suggesting a potential of Sb-based p-type devices for all-III-V CMOS technologies.

Thermoresponsive Glycopolymers Based on Enzymatically Synthesized Oligo-β-Mannosyl Ethyl Methacrylates and N-Isopropylacrylamide

We present here a series of thermoresponsive glycopolymers in the form of poly(N-isopropylacrylamide)-co-(2-[β-manno[oligo]syloxy] ethyl methacrylate)s. These copolymers were prepared from oligo-β-mannosyl ethyl methacrylates that were synthesized through enzymatic catalysis, and were subsequently investigated with respect to their aggregation and phase behavior in aqueous solution using a combination of 1H NMR spectroscopy, dynamic light scattering, cryogenic transmission electron microscopy (TEM), and small-angle X-ray scattering (SAXS). The thermoresponsive glycopolymers were prepared by conventional free radical copolymerization of different mixtures of 2-(β-manno[oligo]syloxy)ethyl methacrylates (with either one or two saccharide units) and N-isopropylacrylamide (NIPAm). The results showed that below the lower critical solution temperature (LCST) of poly(NIPAm), the glycopolymers readily aggregate into nanoscale structures, partly due to the presence of the saccharide moieties. Above the LCST of poly(NIPAm), the glycopolymers rearrange into a heterogeneous mixture of fractal and disc/globular aggregates. Cryo-TEM and SAXS data demonstrated that the presence of the pendant β-mannosyl moieties in the glycopolymers induces a gradual conformational change over a wide temperature range. Even though the onset of this transition is not different from the LCST of poly(NIPAm), the gradual conformational change offers a variation of the temperature-dependent properties in comparison to poly(NIPAm), which displays a sharp coil-to-globule transition. Importantly, the compacted form of the glycopolymers shows a larger colloidal stability compared to the unmodified poly(NIPAm). In addition, the thermoresponsiveness can be conveniently tuned by varying the sugar unit-length and the oligo-β-mannosyl ethyl methacrylate content.

Time-Resolved and Label-Free Evanescent Light-Scattering Microscopy for Mass Quantification of Protein Binding to Single Lipid Vesicles

In-depth understanding of the intricate interactions between biomolecules and nanoparticles is hampered by a lack of analytical methods providing quantitative information about binding kinetics. Herein, we demonstrate how label-free evanescent light-scattering microscopy can be used to temporally resolve specific protein binding to individual surface-bound (∼100 nm) lipid vesicles. A theoretical model is proposed that translates protein-induced changes in light-scattering intensity into bound mass. Since the analysis is centered on individual lipid vesicles, the signal from nonspecific protein binding to the surrounding surface is completely avoided, offering a key advantage over conventional surface-based techniques. Further, by averaging the intensities from less than 2000 lipid vesicles, the sensitivity is shown to increase by orders of magnitude. Taken together, these features provide a new avenue in studies of protein-nanoparticle interaction, in general, and specifically in the context of nanoparticles in medical diagnostics and drug delivery.

Poly(styrene)-block-Maltoheptaose Films for Sub-10 nm Pattern Transfer: Implications for Transistor Fabrication

Sequential infiltration synthesis (SIS) into poly(styrene)-block-maltoheptaose (PS-b-MH) block copolymer using vapors of trimethyl aluminum and water was used to prepare nanostructured surface layers. Prior to the infiltration, the PS-b-MH had been self-assembled into 12 nm pattern periodicity. Scanning electron microscopy indicated that horizontal alumina-like cylinders of 4.9 nm diameter were formed after eight infiltration cycles, while vertical cylinders were 1.3 nm larger. Using homopolymer hydroxyl-terminated poly(styrene) (PS-OH) and MH films, specular neutron reflectometry revealed a preferential reaction of precursors in the MH compared to PS-OH. The infiltration depth into the maltoheptaose homopolymer film was found to be 2.0 nm after the first couple of cycles. It reached 2.5 nm after eight infiltration cycles, and the alumina incorporation within this infiltrated layer corresponded to 23 vol % Al2O3. The alumina-like material, resulting from PS-b-MH infiltration, was used as an etch mask to transfer the sub-10 nm pattern into the underlying silicon substrate, to an aspect ratio of approximately 2:1. These results demonstrate the potential of exploiting SIS into carbohydrate-based polymers for nanofabrication and high pattern density applications, such as transistor devices.

Plasmonic Coupling in Silver Nanoparticle Aggregates and Their Polymer Composite Films for Near-Infrared Photothermal Biofilm Eradication

Plasmonic nanoparticles with near-IR (NIR) light absorption are highly attractive in biomedicine for minimally invasive photothermal treatments. However, these optical properties are typically exhibited by plasmonic nanostructures with complex, nonspherical geometries that may prohibit their broad commercialization and further integration into photothermal devices. Herein, we present the single-step aerosol self-assembly of plasmonic nanoaggregates that consisted of spherical silver nanoparticles with tunable extinction from visible to NIR wavelengths. This tunable extinction was achieved by the addition of SiO₂ during the flame synthesis of the nanoparticles, which acted as a dielectric spacer between the spherical silver nanoparticles and was also computationally validated by simulating the extinction spectra of similar silver nanoaggregates. These plasmonic nanoaggregates were easily deposited on silicone polymeric surfaces and further encased with a top polymer layer, forming plasmonic photothermal nanocomposite films. The photothermal properties of the NIR nanocomposite films were utilized to eradicate the established biofilms of clinically relevant Escherichia coli and Staphylococcus aureus, with a relationship observed between the final surface temperature and biofilm eradication.

Manipulation of Stacking Order in Td-WTe2 by Ultrafast Optical Excitation

Subtle changes in stacking order of layered transition metal dichalcogenides may have profound influence on the electronic and optical properties. The intriguing electronic properties of Td-WTe2 can be traced to the break of inversion symmetry resulting from the ground-state stacking sequence. Strategies for perturbation of the stacking order are actively pursued for intentional tuning of material properties, where optical excitation is of specific interest since it holds the potential for integration of ultrafast switches in future device designs. Here we investigate the structural response in Td-WTe2 following ultrafast photoexcitation by time-resolved electron diffraction. A 0.23 THz shear phonon, involving layer displacement along the b axis, was excited by a 515 nm laser pulse. Pump fluences in excess of a threshold of ∼1 mJ/cm2 result in formation, with an ∼5 ps time constant, of a new stacking order by layer displacement along the b axis in the direction toward the centrosymmetric 1T* phase. The shear displacement of the layers increases with pump fluence until saturation at ∼8 pm. We demonstrate that the excitation of the shear phonon and the stabilization of the metastable phase are decoupled when using an optical pump as evidenced by observation of a transition also in samples with a pinned shear phonon. The results are compared to dynamic first-principles simulations and the transition is interpreted in terms of a mechanism where transient local disorder is prominent before settling at the atomic positions of the metastable phase. This interpretation is corroborated by results from diffuse scattering. The correlation between excitation of intralayer vibrations and interlayer interaction demonstrates the importance of including both short- and long-range interactions in an accurate description of how optical fields can be employed to manipulate the stacking order in 2-dimensional transition metal dichalcogenides.

General Trends in Core-Shell Preferences for Bimetallic Nanoparticles

Surface segregation phenomena dictate core-shell preference of bimetallic nanoparticles and thus play a crucial role in the nanoparticle synthesis and applications. Although it is generally agreed that surface segregation depends on the constituent materials' physical properties, a comprehensive picture of the phenomena on the nanoscale is not yet complete. Here we use a combination of molecular dynamics (MD) and Monte Carlo (MC) simulations on 45 bimetallic combinations to determine the general trend on the core-shell preference and the effects of size and composition. From the extensive studies over sizes and compositions, we find that the surface segregation and degree of the core-shell tendency of the bimetallic combinations depend on the sufficiency or scarcity of the surface-preferring material. Principal component analysis (PCA) and linear discriminant analysis (LDA) on the molecular dynamics simulations results reveal that cohesive energy and Wigner-Seitz radius are the two primary factors that have an "additive" effect on the segregation level and core-shell preference in the bimetallic nanoparticles studied. When the element with the higher cohesive energy also has the larger Wigner-Seitz radius, its core preference decreases, and thus this combination forms less segregated structures than what one would expect from the cohesive energy difference alone. Highly segregated structures (highly segregated core-shell or Janus-like) are expected to form when both the relative cohesive energy difference is greater than ∼20%, and the relative Wigner-Seitz radius difference is greater than ∼4%. Practical guides for predicting core-shell preference and degree of segregation level are presented.

The Structure of the Active Pd State During Catalytic Carbon Monoxide Oxidization

Using grazing incidence X-rays and X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy during the mass transfer limited catalytic oxidation of CO, the long-range surface structure of Pd(100) was investigated. Under the reaction conditions of 50:4 O₂ to CO, 300 mbar pressure, and temperatures between 200 and 450 °C, the surface structure resulting from oxidation and the subsequent oxide reduction was elucidated. The reduction cycle was halted, and while under reaction conditions, angle-dependent X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy close to the critical angle of Pd and modeling of the data was performed. Two proposed models for the system were compared. The suggestion with the metallic islands formed on top of the oxide island was shown to be consistent with the data.

Highly Permeable Fluorinated Polymer Nanocomposites for Plasmonic Hydrogen Sensing

Hydrogen (H₂) sensors that can be produced en masse with cost-effective manufacturing tools are critical for enabling safety in the emerging hydrogen economy. The use of melt-processed nanocomposites in this context would allow the combination of the advantages of plasmonic hydrogen detection with polymer technology; an approach which is held back by the slow diffusion of H₂ through the polymer matrix. Here, we show that the use of an amorphous fluorinated polymer, compounded with colloidal Pd nanoparticles prepared by highly scalable continuous flow synthesis, results in nanocomposites that display a high H₂ diffusion coefficient in the order of 10^-5 cm² s^-1. As a result, plasmonic optical hydrogen detection with melt-pressed fluorinated polymer nanocomposites is no longer limited by the diffusion of the H₂ analyte to the Pd nanoparticle transducer elements, despite a thickness of up to 100 μm, thereby enabling response times as short as 2.5 s at 100 mbar (≡10 vol. %) H₂. Evidently, plasmonic sensors with a fast response time can be fabricated with thick, melt-processed nanocomposites, which paves the way for a new generation of robust H₂ sensors.

Surfactant-Free Stabilization of Aqueous Graphene Dispersions Using Starch as a Dispersing Agent

Attention to graphene dispersions in water with the aid of natural polymers is increasing with improved awareness of sustainability. However, the function of biopolymers that can act as dispersing agents in graphene dispersions is not well understood. In particular, the use of starch to disperse pristine graphene materials deserves further investigation. Here, we report the processing conditions of aqueous graphene dispersions using unmodified starch. We have found that the graphene content of the starch-graphene dispersion is dependent on the starch fraction. The starch-graphene sheets are few-layer graphene with a lateral size of 3.2 μm. Furthermore, topographical images of these starch-graphene sheets confirm the adsorption of starch nanoparticles with a height around 5 nm on the graphene surface. The adsorbed starch nanoparticles are ascribed to extend the storage time of the starch-graphene dispersion up to 1 month compared to spontaneous aggregation in a nonstabilized graphene dispersion without starch. Moreover, the ability to retain water by starch is reduced in the presence of graphene, likely due to environmental changes in the hydroxyl groups responsible for starch-water interactions. These findings demonstrate that starch can disperse graphene with a low oxygen content in water. The aqueous starch-graphene dispersion provides tremendous opportunities for environmental-friendly packaging applications.

Formation of Supported Lipid Bilayers Derived from Vesicles of Various Compositional Complexity on Conducting Polymer/Silica Substrates

Supported lipid bilayers (SLBs) serve important roles as minimalistic models of cellular membranes in multiple diagnostic and pharmaceutical applications as well as in the strive to gain fundamental insights about their complex biological function. To further expand the utility of SLBs, there is a need to go beyond simple lipid compositions to thereby better mimic the complexity of native cell membranes, while simultaneously retaining their compatibility with a versatile range of analytical platforms. To meet this demand, we have in this work explored SLB formation on PEDOT:PSS/silica nanoparticle composite films and mesoporous silica films, both capable of transporting ions to an underlying conducting PEDOT:PSS film. The SLB formation process was evaluated by using the quartz crystal microbalance with dissipation (QCM-D) monitoring, total internal reflection fluorescence (TIRF) microscopy, and fluorescence recovery after photobleaching (FRAP) for membranes made of pure synthetic lipids with or without the reconstituted membrane protein β-secretase 1 (BACE1) as well as cell-derived native lipid vesicles containing overexpressed BACE1. The mesoporous silica thin film was superior to the PEDOT:PSS/silica nanoparticle composite, providing successful formation of bilayers with high lateral mobility and low defect density even for the most complex native cell membranes.

Area Selective Deposition of Metals from the Electrical Resistivity of the Substrate

Area selective deposition (ASD) of films only on desired areas of the substrate opens for less complex fabrication of nanoscaled electronics. We show that a newly developed CVD method, where plasma electrons are used as the reducing agent in deposition of metallic thin films, is inherently area selective from the electrical resistivity of the substrate surface. When depositing iron with the new CVD method, no film is deposited on high-resistivity SiO2 surfaces whereas several hundred nanometers thick iron films are deposited on areas with low resistivity, obtained by adding a thin layer of silver on the SiO2 surface. On the basis of such a scheme, we show how to use the electric resistivity of the substrate surface as an extension of the ASD toolbox for metal-on-metal deposition.

Structure and Laminar Flame Speed of an Ammonia/Methane/Air Premixed Flame under Varying Pressure and Equivalence Ratio

This paper presents a joint experimental and numerical study on premixed laminar ammonia/methane/air flames, aiming to characterize the flame structures and NO formation and determine the laminar flame speed under different pressure, equivalence ratio, and ammonia fraction in the fuel. The experiments were carried out in a lab-scale pressurized vessel with a Bunsen burner installed with a concentric co-flow of air. Measurements of NH and NO distributions in the flames were made using planar laser-induced fluorescence. A novel method was presented for determination of the laminar flame speed from Bunsen-burner flame measurements, which takes into account the non-uniform flow in the unburned mixture and local flame stretch. NH profiles were chosen as flame front markers. Direct numerical simulation of the flames and one-dimensional chemical kinetic modeling were performed to enhance the understanding of flame structures and evaluate three chemical kinetic mechanisms recently reported in the literature. The stoichiometric and fuel-rich flames exhibit a dual-flame structure, with an inner premixed flame and an outer diffusion flame. The two flames interact, which affects the NO emissions. The impact of the diffusion flame on the laminar flame speed of the inner premixed flame is however minor. At elevated pressures or higher ammonia/methane ratios, the emission of NO is suppressed as a result of the reduced radical mass fraction and promoted NO reduction reactions. It is found that the laminar flame speed measured in the present experiments can be captured by the investigated mechanisms, but quantitative predictions of the NO distribution require further model development.

A Tunable Multivariate Metal-Organic Framework as a Platform for Designing Photocatalysts

Catalysts for photochemical reactions underlie many foundations in our lives, from natural light harvesting to modern energy storage and conversion, including processes such as water photolysis by TiO2. Recently, metal-organic frameworks (MOFs) have attracted large interest within the chemical research community, as their structural variety and tunability yield advantages in designing photocatalysts to address energy and environmental challenges. Here, we report a series of novel multivariate metal-organic frameworks (MTV-MOFs), denoted as MTV-MIL-100. They are constructed by linking aromatic carboxylates and AB2OX3 bimetallic clusters, which have ordered atomic arrangements. Synthesized through a solvent-assisted approach, these ordered and multivariate metal clusters offer an opportunity to enhance and fine-tune the electronic structures of the crystalline materials. Moreover, mass transport is improved by taking advantage of the high porosity of the MOF structure. Combining these key advantages, MTV-MIL-100(Ti,Co) exhibits a high photoactivity with a turnover frequency of 113.7 molH2 gcat.-1 min-1, a quantum efficiency of 4.25%, and a space time yield of 4.96 × 10-5 in the photocatalytic hydrolysis of ammonia borane. Bridging the fields of perovskites and MOFs, this work provides a novel platform for the design of highly active photocatalysts.

Operando Reflectance Microscopy on Polycrystalline Surfaces in Thermal Catalysis, Electrocatalysis, and Corrosion

We have developed a microscope with a spatial resolution of 5 μm, which can be used to image the two-dimensional surface optical reflectance (2D-SOR) of polycrystalline samples in operando conditions. Within the field of surface science, operando tools that give information about the surface structure or chemistry of a sample under realistic experimental conditions have proven to be very valuable to understand the intrinsic reaction mechanisms in thermal catalysis, electrocatalysis, and corrosion science. To study heterogeneous surfaces in situ, the experimental technique must both have spatial resolution and be able to probe through gas or electrolyte. Traditional electron-based surface science techniques are difficult to use under high gas pressure conditions or in an electrolyte due to the short mean free path of electrons. Since it uses visible light, SOR can easily be used under high gas pressure conditions and in the presence of an electrolyte. In this work, we use SOR in combination with a light microscope to gain information about the surface under realistic experimental conditions. We demonstrate this by studying the different grains of three polycrystalline samples: Pd during CO oxidation, Au in electrocatalysis, and duplex stainless steel in corrosion. Optical light-based techniques such as SOR could prove to be a good alternative or addition to more complicated techniques in improving our understanding of complex polycrystalline surfaces with operando measurements.

Sensitivity of Nitrogen K-Edge X-ray Absorption to Halide Substitution and Thermal Fluctuations in Methylammonium Lead-Halide Perovskites

The performance of hybrid perovskite materials in solar cells crucially depends on their electronic properties, and it is important to investigate contributions to the total electronic structure from specific components in the material. In a combined theoretical and experimental study of CH₃NH₃PbI₃-methylammonium lead triiodide (MAPI)-and its bromide cousin CH₃NH₃PbBr₃ (MAPB), we analyze nitrogen K-edge (N 1s-to-2p*) X-ray absorption (XA) spectra measured in MAPI and MAPB single crystals. This permits comparison of spectral features to the local character of unoccupied molecular orbitals on the CH₃NH₃ ⁺ (MA⁺) counterions and allows us to investigate how thermal fluctuations, hydrogen bonding, and halide-ion substitution influence the XA spectra as a measure of the local electronic structure. In agreement with the experiment, the simulated spectra for MAPI and MAPB show close similarity, except that the MAPB spectral features are blue-shifted by +0.31 eV. The shift is shown to arise from the intrinsic difference in the electronic structure of the two halide atoms rather than from structural differences between the materials. In addition, from the spectral sampling analysis of molecular dynamics simulations, clear correlations between geometric descriptors (N-C, N-H, and H···I/Br distances) and spectral features are identified and used to explain the spectral shapes.
