Occurrence of Pharmaceuticals and Personal Care Products in the Water Environment of Poland: A Review

The issue of pharmaceuticals and personal care products (PPCPs) in the water environment has gained increasing interest worldwide. To determine the nature and extent of this problem for Poland, this paper presents a review of research on the presence of PPCPs in Poland, looking at results for different water samples, including wastewater (before and after treatment), landfill leachate, surface water (standing water bodies and rivers), seawater, groundwater and drinking water. The review is based on over 50 scientific articles and dissertations referring to studies of PPCPs. It also briefly outlines possible sources and the fate of PPCPs in the aquatic environment. The review of Polish research has revealed that studies have previously covered at least 39 PPCP groups (270 compounds in total). These studies focused mainly on wastewater and rivers, and only a few concerned landfill leachate and seawater. They most often reported on nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drugs and antibiotics. The highest concentrations of the analysed PPCPs were found mainly in raw wastewater (e.g., naproxen, up to 551,960 ng/L), but they were also occasionally found in surface water (e.g., azithromycin, erythromycin, irbesartan and metoprolol) and in groundwater (e.g., N,N-diethyl-meta-toluamide, known as DEET, up to 17,280 ng/L). Extremely high concentrations of bisphenol A (up to 2,202,000 ng/L) and diclofenac (up to 108,340 ng/L) were found in landfill leachate. Although numerous substances have been detected, PPCPs are still not monitored regularly, which makes it difficult to obtain a clear understanding of their incidence in the water environment.

Occurrence of emerging contaminants in highly anthropogenically influenced river Yamuna in India

River Yamuna is one of the major lifelines of Northern India. The study quantified 16 target compounds including pharmaceuticals, personal care products, and hormones in the Yamuna river. Surface water samples were collected from 13 locations spanning 575 km along the river, and from two of its tributaries, Hindon river and Hindon canal. Spatiotemporal variations in the occurrence of the target compounds at the 13 sites during summer and post-monsoon season were investigated. Caffeine, estrone, gemfibrozil, sulfamethoxazole, testosterone and trimethoprim were found in all the samples, indicating substantial usage and/or persistence in the environment. The mean concentration of the target compounds ranged from 25.5 to 2187.5 ng/L. Higher concentrations were detected during the post monsoon, compared to the summer season. The highest concentration detected was of trimethoprim (8807.6 ng/L) during summer sampling, followed by caffeine (6489.9 ng/L) and gemfibrozil (2991 ng/L), during the post-monsoon sampling. The lowest concentration detected was of estrone (10.7 ng/L), during the summer sampling. The runoff from the catchment areas is one of the contributing factors for the increased concentration of the compounds during post monsoon. During summer, the river bed goes dry, facilitating the adsorption of the compounds onto the river bed sediments. The three sampling locations Okhla barrage (ponding of water from drains traversing Delhi), confluence of Yamuna with Shahadara drain (industrial and poultry cluster, and Ghazipur dumping yard) and Agra city (industrial clusters) were the hotspots in terms of total concentration of the target compounds. The study also reported the presence of PPCPs and hormones in the finished drinking water of two DWTPs at Mathura and Agra.

Toxicity and combined effects of antibiotics and nano ZnO on a phosphorus-removing Shewanella strain in wastewater treatment

Antibiotics and nanoparticles, which are emerging contaminants, can occur simultaneously in biological wastewater treatment systems, potentially resulting in complex interactive effects. This study investigated the effects of individual and complex zinc oxide nanoparticles (nZnO) and antibiotics (quinolone and sulfonamide), on the Shewanella strain used to remove phosphorus (PO₄^3-), metabolic processes, as well as its complexing and toxicity mechanisms. The inhibition of PO₄^3- removal increased from 30.7% to 100.0% with increased nZnO concentrations (half maximal effective concentration (EC50) = 1.1 mg Zn/L) by affecting poly-p and glycogen metabolites. The combined exposure to nZnO and ciprofloxacin/norfloxacin (CIP/NOR) had a significant antagonistic effect on the removal of PO₄^3- and on the metabolism of poly-p and glycogen in phosphate-accumulating organisms (PAOs), whereas the complexing of sulfonamide and nZnO had no significant additional effect. Thus, the complexing of nanoparticles and antibiotics exhibited different toxicity effects from the antibiotic structure-based complex reactions. These results can be used to improve wastewater treatment processes and reduce risks associated with wastewater discharge.

Nontronite mineral clay NAu-2 as support for hematite applied as catalyst for heterogeneous photo-Fenton processes

This study describes the characterization of Nontronite, a clay mineral with high content of structural iron, before and after iron incorporation and 600 °C heat treatment. The Nontronite was classified as a mesoporous material, with high absorption in the UV-Vis range and band gap energy of 1.9 eV, indicative of the presence of superficial hematite, also verified in XRD analysis. The heat treatment promoted a structure rearrangement and the conversion of other iron phases to hematite, allowing the formation of surface irregular sites on Nontronite and facilitating the access for the decomposition of H₂O₂ into HO. Its catalytic activity in heterogeneous photo-Fenton process was evaluated during the degradation of the antibiotic sulfathiazole (STZ) and showed high activity achieving undetectable levels of STZ after 20 min under UV-LED irradiation and solar irradiation, and showing no iron leaching under controlled pH = 3. The degradation intermediates identified indicated hydroxylation as the main degradation route.

A review on pharmaceuticals removal from waters by single and combined biological, membrane filtration and ultrasound systems

Contaminants of emerging concern (CEC) such as pharmaceuticals commonly found in urban and industrial wastewater are a potential threat to human health and have negative environmental impact. Most wastewater treatment plants cannot efficiently remove these compounds and therefore, many pharmaceuticals end up in aquatic ecosystems, inducing problems such as toxicity and antibiotic-resistance. This review reports the extent of pharmaceutical removal by individual processes such as bioreactors, advanced oxidation processes and membrane filtration systems, all of which are not 100% efficient and can lead to the direct discharge of pharmaceuticals into water bodies. Also, the importance of understanding biotransformation of pharmaceutical compounds during biological and ultrasound treatment, and its impact on treatment efficacy will be reviewed. Different combinations of the processes above, either as an integrated configuration or in series, will be discussed in terms of their degradation efficiency and scale-up capabilities. The trace quantities of pharmaceutical compounds in wastewater and scale-up issues of ultrasound highlight the importance of membrane filtration as a concentration and volume reduction treatment step for wastewater, which could subsequently be treated by ultrasound.

Deterministic and probabilistic health risk assessment for exposure to non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs in an Indian river

This study presents deterministic and probabilistic human health risk assessment using Monte Carlo simulations on exposure to an Indian river, Kaveri, which has been contaminated by non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAIDs). The NSAIDs of concern are naproxen, ibuprofen, aspirin, ketoprofen, and diclofenac. We have considered three exposure scenarios (water ingestion, dermal exposure, and fish ingestion) for four different age groups (0-5, 6-10, 11-18, and 19-70 years). Deterministic risk assessment revealed teenagers to be the most sensitive receptors and water ingestion to be the most crucial pathway contributing to maximum health risk (79 to 86%). Based on the results of Monte Carlo simulations, it was found that the probability of exceeding the deterministic mean risks ranged from 17 to 39% for different exposure routes. High end risk estimates such as 95th percentiles and maximum values of HQ for the entire population did not exceed the USEPA allowable risk. This implies that the NSAIDs at the detected concentrations in the Kaveri river may not pose adverse health effects even in the worst-case scenario. Among the five NSAIDs, diclofenac was found to be the major contributor for health risk. Moreover, the concentration of diclofenac was just one order less than the estimated site-specific threshold concentrations. From sensitivity analysis, the most and the least impactful parameters were found to be water ingestion rate and fish ingestion rate respectively.

Novel organic assisted Ag-ZnO photocatalyst for atenolol and acetaminophen photocatalytic degradation under visible radiation: performance and reaction mechanism

This study is on photocatalytic degradation of pharmaceutical residues of atenolol (ATL) and acetaminophen (ACT) present in secondary effluent under visible light irradiation stimulated by Ag doped ZnO (Ag-ZnO) photocatalyst. Lawsonia inermis leaf extract was used for reduction of Zinc sulphate to ZnO nanoparticles (NPs). Further, ZnO NPs were doped with Ag and characterized by XRD, FT-IR, SEM-EDX, surface area analyzer, UV-Vis, and photoluminescence spectrometry to analyze the structure, morphology, chemical composition, and optical property. FT-IR analysis revealed major functional groups such as OH, C=O, and SEM analysis depicted the polyhedron shape of the NPs with size range of 100 nm. Ag-ZnO NPs were used in the photocatalytic degradation of ATL and ACT, and its removal was evaluated by varying initial contaminant concentration, catalyst dosage, and initial pH. Findings indicate that Ag-ZnO NPs demonstrated relative narrow bandgap and efficient charge separation that resulted in enhanced photocatalytic activity under visible light illumination. The photocatalytic degradation of ATL and ACT fitted well with pseudo-first-order kinetic model. Further, it was found that under optimal conditions of 5 mg/L of contaminants, pH of 8.5, and catalyst dose of 1 g/L, degradation efficiency of 70.2% (ATL) and 90.8% (ACT) was achieved for a reaction time of 120 min. More than 60% reduction in TOC was observed for both contaminants and OH• pathway was found to be the major removal process. Ag-ZnO photocatalyst showed good recycling performance, and these findings indicate that it could be cost effectively employed for removing emerging contaminants under visible light radiation.

Facile synthesis of graphitic carbon nitride from acetic acid pretreatment to activate persulfate in presence of blue light for photocatalytic removal of metronidazole

Activation of persulfate (PS) in presence of blue LED light (λ_max ∼454 nm) using acetic acid modified graphitic carbon nitride (ACN) was investigated. Usage of acetic acid had improved the specific surface area (SSA, 21.89 m² g^-1) of ACN compared with pristine graphitic carbon nitride (GCN) and it also reduced interfacial charge transfer resistance in ACN. Subsequently, photocatalytic removal of metronidazole (MET) was investigated using ACN. It was observed that upward shift in the conduction band (CB) in ACN produced the reduction of PS to form sulfate radicals (SO₄^.-) (CB of ACN (-1.25 V vs normal hydrogen electrode (NHE); Bandgap = 2.77 eV) and GCN (-1.23 V vs NHE; Bandgap = 2.73 eV)), which enhanced the MET removal. Moreover, batch experiments were conducted to quantify the effects of PS dosage (0.08-0.40 g L^-1), ACN dosage (0.20-2 g L^-1), light intensity (15-45 W), and pH (2-13.50). ACN (1 g L^-1) and GCN (1 g L^-1) with 0.16 g L^-1 of PS have shown 100% and 76.1% MET (C_o-10 mg L^-1) removal within 300 min, respectively, and the removal followed zero-order kinetics (k ∼2.39 mg L^-1 h^-1). However, MET mineralization was approximately 30% with ACN. MET removal had decreased with increase in pH and almost complete inhibition was observed at pH ∼12. Overall, it was identified that SO₄^.- was the major reactive species whereas holes (h⁺) in the valence band (VB) of ACN (1.52 V vs NHE) played a minor role in MET removal.

Removal of ibuprofen from aqueous media by adsorption: A comprehensive review

Ibuprofen (IBP) is a non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drug released into the environment through hospital and medical effluents, pharmaceutical wastewater and veterinary use. The aim of this paper is to review the empirical findings on the adsorption of IBP from aqueous media. A preliminary ecotoxicological assessment confirmed the environmental risk of IBP in the aqueous environment. Open literature works considered in this review were for the past decade (2010-2020). Carbon-based adsorbents are the best class of adsorbent for the uptake of IBP and the highest reported maximum adsorption capacity (q_max) for IBP is 496.1 mg/g by SWCNTs. The range of adsorption capacities for IBP uptake in this review is between 0.0496 and 496.1 mg/g. The mechanism of uptake is majorly by hydrophobic interactions, π - π stacking, hydrogen bonds, electrostatic interactions and dipole-dipole interaction. IBP uptake was best fit to a wide variety of isotherm models but was well suited to the pseudo-second order kinetics model. The thermodynamics of IBP uptake depends majorly on the nature of the adsorbent and desorption from the solid phase is based on an appropriate choice of the eluent. Knowledge gaps were observed in used adsorbent disposal and process improvement. In the future, interest would increase in scale-up, industrial applications and practical utilisation of the research findings which would help in sustainable water resource management.

In-situ dual effect of Ag-Fe-TiO2 composite for the photocatalytic degradation of Ciprofloxacin in aqueous solution

Industrial waste materials such as Fly Ash (FA), Foundry Sand (FS) were used as support material by mixing them with clay to fix the catalyst. Where FA and FS served as an iron (Fe) source to induce the photo-Fenton process. The presence of Fe in FA and FS was affirmed by SEM-EDS characterization. UV-DRS was performed to analyze the bandgap of the composite which reduced from 2.96 to 2.82 eV after doping TiO2 with Ag. This composite was used to initiate photocatalysis. The fixing of catalyst on a support formed the Fe-Ag-TiO2 complex which led to the commencement of the in-situ dual process(i.e. photocatalysis and photo-Fenton) in fixed bed mode. After the optimization of several parameters such as H₂O₂ dose, the area covered by beads, A/V ratio, Flow rate, pH under solar irradiations for 60 min, 94.4% degradation of CIP was attained. XRD analysis was carried out to confirm the crystallographic phases of the composite anatase and rutile phases of TiO₂ were present in the composite. The systematic leaching of iron took place in this process and was confirmed by iron estimation during the reaction process. To understand the elemental composition of the composite SEM-EDS was performed and the present of TiO₂, Fe and Ag was affirmed. Composite beads were stable and active even after the 30 recycles as confirmed by SEM-EDS. The intermediate products were analyzed by GC-MS analysis whereas the toxicity of the treated samples was studied by the zone inhibition test.

Dangerous connections: biochemical and behavioral traits in Daphnia magna and Daphnia longispina exposed to ecologically relevant amounts of paracetamol

Exposure of nontarget organisms to therapeutic agents can cause distinct toxic effects, even at low concentrations. Paracetamol is a painkiller drug, widely used in human and veterinary therapies, being frequently found in the aquatic compartment in considerable amounts. Its toxicity has already been established for some species, but its full ecotoxicological potential is still not sufficiently described. To characterize the ecotoxicity of paracetamol, the present study evaluated several parameters, such as acute immobilization (EC₅₀ calculation), biochemical alterations, and behavioral effects, in two species of freshwater microcrustaceans of the genus Daphnia (D. magna and D. longispina). To increase the relevance of the data obtained, animals were exposed to levels of paracetamol similar to those already reported to occur in the wild. Data showed antioxidant responses in both species, namely an increase of catalase and GSTs activities in D. magna. On the contrary, effects of paracetamol on D. longispina included only an impairment of GSTs activity. Despite the absence of anticholinesterasic effects, behavioral modifications were also observed. This set of data indicates that realistic levels of paracetamol may trigger the activation of the antioxidant defense system of freshwater crustaceans, causing changes in behavioral traits (increase in swimming time, but with a reduction in swimming distance) of unknown etiology that are likely to affect normal life traits of wild populations.

High-temperature and freeze-thaw aged biochar impacts on sulfonamide sorption and mobility in soil

Biomass-derived biochar is a carbon-rich product for soil amendment and sulfapyridine (SPY) is a typical sulfonamide of antibiotics in the soil. Amendment with biochar for soil could control SPY sorption or mobility. However, the pristine biochar inevitably goes through the long-term ageing in the environment and the information on such ageing impact on SPY sorption is not fully recognized. The simulated ageing process methods were employed for high-temperature and freeze-thraw climate to treat the biochar for two months in the present study. The batch adsorption of SPY and leaching column experiments were conducted for comparison of the fresh/aged biochar-soil system. The results showed that biochar addition could increase soil pH and saturated moisture, aged biochars own more O-containing functional groups and exhibit higher hydrophilicity and polarity. The sorption mechanism of unamended soil with SPY primarily resulted from the weak hydrophobic distribution. All fresh and aged biochar amended soil increased SPY sorption due to improvement of H-bonding interaction between SPY and biochar surface functional groups, indicating such initiative adsorption was stronger than passive partitioning. It is of importance for us to reconsider that aged biochar-amended soil, especially two-month high-temperature aged biochar-amended soil showed the highest adsorption performance and the lowest desorption capacity towards SPY. Both SPY leaching column experiments and the acid rain leaching tests suggested that the application of biochar in tropical or high-temperature climate regions for organics polluted soil remediation is favorable, but we should be aware of the uncertainty of soil amendment with biochar in cold regions.

Structural, functional, resistome and pathogenicity profiling of the Cooum river

The microbial community's structure and functions determine the health, quality, and anthropogenic conditions of the river ecosystems. The presence of Bacteria such as Arcobacter spp, Escherichia spp, and Campylobacters spp, have been shown to reflect the poor water quality of rivers. Apprehension of the microbial community in polluted water bodies is significant because it affects human health and the environment. Culture-independent metagenomic and metatranscriptomic approaches employed in the current study of the Cooum river unraveled the taxonomic classification of diverse microbes, including archaea, bacteria, viruses, and phages. The presence of abundant Macellibacteroides fermentans, Arcobacter bivolvorium, Arcobacter butzleri, Methanothrix soenhngeii, and Bacteroides graminisolvens were noted. Viruses and phages like Caudovirales, Human mastadenovirus C, Siphoviridae, Escherichia phage, Erwinia phage, Synechoccus phage, and Vibrio phage were relatively predominant. Various metabolic pathways like methane, sulfur, and nitrogen metabolism adopted by the microbiome confer dangerous gases. Mechanisms such as secretory systems, signal transduction, Chemotaxis, quorum sensing, transportation of chemicals and ions were significantly enriched. The microbes expressed antimicrobial resistance mechanisms as identified from the genes encoding beta-lactamase enzymes and aminoglycoside phosphotransferase enzymes. Metal resistance mechanisms against copper, tellurium, chromium, and cadmium were plentiful. Presence of human pathogens interactions with Yersinia pestis, Campylobacter jejuni, Escherichia coli, Helicobacter pylori, and Francisella tularensis subsp. tularensis suggested the possibilities of transmission of pathogenesis to humans. The current study is the first to apprehend the detailed microbiome composition of one of the highly polluted rivers in South India. The study elaborated the microbiome's structure, functions, and metabolic potential at a specific site of the polluted river.

Occurrence and fate of pharmaceuticals in effluent and sludge from a wastewater treatment plant in Brazil

A wide variety of pharmaceuticals are discharged in water courses on a daily basis due to their incomplete removal from effluent in treatment plants. The aim of the current study was to assess the occurrence, fate and removal of pharmaceuticals from effluent and sludge samples collected in the biggest sanitary sewer plant in Southern Brazil. In total, 13 pharmaceuticals were detected in the influent through UHPLC-MS/M - paracetamol and caffeine recorded the highest concentrations, 137.98 and 35.29 µg L^-1, respectively. The treated effluent presented 11 compounds. Antibiotics were the class recording the widest diversity; metronidazole showed the lowest concentration (0.023 µg L^-1) and sulfamethoxazole presented the highest concentration (1.374 µg L^-1) in influent samples. Seven pharmaceuticals were absorbed by the sludge; among them, one finds caffeine, ciprofloxacin and ofloxacin, which were quantified both in the effluent and in the sludge. On the other hand, doxycycline, fenbendazole, norfloxacin and tetracycline were only detected in sludge samples - their concentrations ranged from 0.026 to 5.034 mg kg^-1. Clindamycin, oxytetracycline, sulfathiazole and trimethoprim concentrations increased throughout the treatment. There were high paracetamol and caffeine removal rates (>97%), and it may have happened due to degradation, photodegradation or chemical reaction. Ciprofloxacin and ofloxacin removal rate exceeded 83% mainly due to their sorption by sludge. Finally, the mass balance analysis highlighted high pharmaceutical loads (511.466 g d^-1) discharged into recipient waterbodies. This outcome demands broadening the removal of these pharmaceuticals from sewage.

Nano-adsorbents an effective candidate for removal of toxic pharmaceutical compounds from aqueous environment: A critical review on emerging trends

Advancements in medical research has resulted in the modernization of healthcare facilities, subsequently leading to a higher level of production and usage of pharmaceuticals to sustain better quality of life. Pharmaceutical active compounds (PhACs) possess high genotoxicity and eco-toxicity thus presenting numerous side effects to living beings on long-term exposure. The fate and toxicity of PhACs were explored in detail, aiming to elucidate their occurrence and transmission in wastewater treatment systems (WWTPs). Adsorption of pharmaceutical compounds using Nano-adsorbents has gained momentum in recent years owing to their low-cost, high surface area and effectiveness. This review has been conducted in order to widen the utilization of Nano adsorbents in the adsorption of pharmaceutical compounds with a focus on the aqueous environment. The synthesis routes and properties of Nano-adsorbents for removal of PhACs were assessed in a comprehensive way. The recovery and reuse ability of nano-adsorbents also forms an integral part of its application in the removal of PhACs and has hence been delineated.

Pigeon Pea Husk for Removal of Emerging Contaminants Trimethoprim and Atenolol from Water

The pace of industrialization and rapid population growth in countries such as India entail an increased input of industrial and sanitary organic micropollutants, the so-called emerging contaminants (EC), into the environment. The emission of EC, such as pharmaceuticals, reaching Indian water bodies causes a detrimental effect on aquatic life and ultimately on human health. However, the financial burden of expanding sophisticated water treatment capacities renders complementary, cost-efficient alternatives, such as adsorption, attractive. Here we show the merits of washed and milled pigeon pea husk (PPH) as low-cost adsorbent for the removal of the EC trimethoprim (TMP) and atenolol (ATN) that are among the most detected pharmaceuticals in Indian waters. We found a linear increase in adsorption capacity of PPH for TMP and ATN at concentrations ranging from 10 to 200 μg/L and from 50 to 400 μg/L, respectively, reflecting the concentrations occurring in Indian water bodies. Investigation of adsorption kinetics using the external mass transfer model (EMTM) revealed that film diffusion resistance governed the adsorption process of TMP or ATN onto PPH. Moreover, analysis of the adsorption performance of PPH across an extensive range of pH and temperature illustrated that the highest adsorption loadings achieved concurred with actual conditions of Indian waters. We anticipate our work as starting point towards the development of a feasible adsorbent system aiming at low-cost water treatment.

The optimization of enzymatic oxidation of levofloxacin, a fluoroquinolone antibiotic for wastetwater treatment

The global presence of antibiotics in the environment has created concerns about the emergence of antibiotic resistance bacteria and potential hazard to humans and the ecosystem. This work aims to study the removal of levofloxacin, a new generation fluoroquinolone antibiotic from aqueous solutions by enzyme mediated oxidation process and optimization of the conditions thereof by response surface methodology (RSM) using Box-Behnken design (BBD). For this study, experiments were conducted to analyze the effect of independent variables namely, pH, temperature, mediator concentration and antibiotic concentration on the degradation percentage of levofloxacin antibiotic using laccase enzyme derived from Trametes versicolor. The residual levofloxacin concentration was determined using high performance liquid chromatography (HPLC). On applying the quadratic regression analysis, among the main parameters, it was found that the percentage degradation was significantly affected by all the four variables. The predicted values for percentage degradation of levofloxacin were close to the experimental values obtained and the R² (0.95) indicated that the regression was able to give a good prediction of response for the percentage degradation of levofloxacin in the studied range. The optimal conditions for the maximum degradation (99.9%) as predicted by the BBD were: temperature of 37 °C, pH of 4.5, mediator concentration of 0.1 mM and levofloxacin concentration of 5 μg mL^-1. The findings of the study were further extended to study the effect of partially purified enzymes isolated from Pleurotus eryngii, Pleurotus florida and Pleurotus sajor caju on the degradation of levofloxacin at concentrations ranging from as low as 0.1 to as high as 50 µg mL^-1 in synthetic wastewater utilizing the optimized conditions generated by BBD. A maximum degradation of 88.8% was achieved with the partially purified enzyme isolated from Pleurotus eryngii at 1 µg mL^-1 levofloxacin concentration which was at par with the commercial laccase which showed 89% degradation in synthetic wastewater at the optimized conditions. The biodegradation studies were conducted using only 2 units of laccase. Thus, the expensive commercial laccase can be effectively replaced by crude laccase isolated from indigenous macrofungi such as P. eryngii, P. florida and P. sajor caju as a cost effective alternative to degrade levofloxacin present in contaminated wastewater using as low as 2 units of enzyme for a 72 h treatment period.

Pharmaceutical Pollution and Disposal of Expired, Unused, and Unwanted Medicines in the Brazilian Context

The occurrence of pharmaceuticals in the environment is an everyday recognized concern worldwide, and drugs as environmental contaminants have been detected in water and soil systems, posing risks to humans and wildlife. The presence of drugs in wastewater, groundwater, and even drinking water occurs in several countries, including Brazil, where the pharmaceutical market is expanding over the years. The adverse, harmful effects of pharmaceuticals in the environment range from the spreading of antimicrobial resistance and species survival to the interference with reproduction and increased cancer incidence in humans. Therefore, it is demanding to count on proper legislation to prevent these pollutants from entering the distinct environment compartments. In some developed countries, laws, directives, programs, and initiatives regarding drug disposal reach a mature status. In Brazil, federal laws dealing with drug residues' management are recent, with flaws that might facilitate non-compliance with drug pollution issues. Besides, pharmacies and drugstores are not obligated to collect unneeded household medicines, while particular State laws aim to ordinate the disposal of drug residues regionally. In this review, we consider the current knowledge about pharmaceutical (drug) pollution, the recommendation and regulations on the disposal of useless medicines in some countries, and in the context of the expanding pharmaceutical market in Brazil. The awareness of emerging contaminants in the environment, besides the joint effort of authorities, consumers, and the general public nationwide, will be required to avoid pharmaceutical/drug pollution and achieve an eco-friendly environment and a sustainable society.

Adsorption of five emerging contaminants on activated carbon from aqueous medium: kinetic characteristics and computational modeling for plausible mechanism

Pharmaceuticals and personal care products (PPCPs) do not have standard regulations for discharge in the environment and are categorized as contaminants of emerging concern as they pose potential threats to ecology as well as humans even at low concentrations. Conventional treatment processes generally employed in the wastewater treatment plants are not adequately engineered for effective removal of PPCPs. Identifying cost-effective tertiary treatment is therefore, important for complete removal of PPCPs from wastewater prior to discharge or reuse. Present study demonstrates adsorption using granular-activated carbon (GAC) as a possible tertiary treatment for simultaneous removal of five PPCPs from aqueous media. Adsorbent was characterized in terms of morphology, surface area, surface charge distribution, and presence of functional groups. Performance of GAC was investigated for sorption of three hydrophilic (ciprofloxacin, acetaminophen, and caffeine) and two hydrophobic (benzophenone and irgasan) PPCPs from aqueous solution varying the process parameters (initial concentration, adsorbent dose, pH, agitation time). Langmuir isotherm model (correlation coefficients (R2): 0.993 to 0.998) appeared to fit the isotherm data better than Temkin isotherm model for these adsorbates. Adsorption efficiencies of these compounds (8.26 to 20.40 mg g-1) were in accordance with their log Kow values. While the adsorption kinetics was best explained in terms of a pseudo-second-order kinetic model, the data suggested that adsorption mechanism was mainly governed by the intraparticle diffusion. The role of physical factors like molecular volume, molecular size, and area of targeted PPCPs were investigated through computational studies which in turn can help predicting their uptake onto GAC.

Rapid modification of waste expanded polystyrene with H2SO4/trace persulfate in one pot for effective adsorption of fluoroquinolone antibiotic and its regeneration

Norfloxacin, a fluoroquinolone antibiotic, is widely used to treat microbial infections. However, untreated norfloxacin-containing wastewater poses serious threats to the ecosystem and human health. The treatment of waste expanded polystyrene (EPS) by landfilling or incineration could cause environmental problems. In this research, the feasibility of converting EPS into a valuable adsorbent for norfloxacin was evaluated. Results showed that EPS treated with H₂SO₄ (EPS_H2SO4) effectively adsorbed norfloxacin. The optimal sulfonation conditions were 95% H₂SO₄ and 100 °C. Addition of 0.001 M of persulfate during sulfonation obviously shortened the sulfonation time to 7.5 min, and the adsorption ability of modified EPS increased with increasing persulfate dose. Under the experimental conditions of 25 mg L^-1 norfloxacin, pH₀ 6.2, and 0.4 g L^-1 EPS_{H2SO4+persulfate} (dry weight), 97.2% of norfloxacin could be removed after 30 min of adsorption. The adsorption ability of EPS_{H2SO4+persulfate} decreased with increasing solution pH₀, and the optimal pH₀ was 6.2. The Langmuir isotherm best described the adsorption behavior of EPS_{H2SO4+persulfate} (q_max = 140.9 mg L^-1, b = 1.97 L mg^-1, R² = 0.9992). 1 M HCl effectively regenerated the exhausted EPS_{H2SO4+persulfate} at the optimal solid/solution ratio of 8 g L^-1. EPS_{H2SO4+persulfate} maintained excellent adsorption capacity (>80.9%) after eight adsorption-regeneration cycles.

Occurrence, sources and fate of pharmaceuticals and personal care products and artificial sweeteners in groundwater

Groundwater is considered as the main source for supplying the public drinking water in many countries and regions; however, pharmaceuticals and personal care products (PPCPs) and artificial sweeteners (ASs) found in groundwater can exert harmful effects on human health and aquatic ecosystems, and therefore, they are of persistent concern. The recent data on the occurrence of a series of PPCPs (including antibiotics, excitants and lipid regulators) and ASs often detected in groundwater are reviewed, in which the PPCPs and ASs occur in groundwater at the concentration from several nanograms to several micrograms per litre. In addition, the spatio-temporal distribution characteristics of PPCPs and ASs are discussed and the main sources and possibly pollution pathways of PPCPs and ASs in groundwater are summarised and analysed. Additionally, the adsorption, migration and degradation of PPCPs and ASs in underground environments are evaluated. Due to the long residence time in groundwater, pollutants are likely to threaten the freshwater body for decades under certain conditions. Therefore, according to the current level of pollution, it is necessary to improve and enhance the supervision on PPCP and AS pollutants and prevent and control groundwater pollution.

Removal of Carbamazepine onto Modified Zeolitic Tuff in Different Water Matrices: Batch and Continuous Flow Experiments

Carbamazepine (CBZ) is the most frequently detected pharmaceutical residues in aquatic environments effluent by wastewater treatment plants. Batch and column experiments were conducted to evaluate the removal of CBZ from ultra-pure water and wastewater treatment plant (WWTP) effluent using raw zeolitic tuff (RZT) and surfactant modified zeolite (SMZ). Point zero net charge (pHpzc), X-ray diffraction (XRD), X-ray fluorescence (XRF), and Fourier Transform Infrared (FTIR) were investigated for adsorbents to evaluate the physiochemical changes resulted from the modification process using Hexadecyltrimethylammonium bromide (HDTMA-Br). XRD and FTIR showed that the surfactant modification of RZT has created an amorphous surface with new alkyl groups on the surface. The pHpzc was determined to be approximately 7.9 for RZT and SMZ. The results indicated that the CBZ uptake by SMZ is higher than RZT in all sorption tests (>8 fold). Batch results showed that the sorption capacity of RZT and SMZ in WWTP effluent (0.029 and 0.25 mg/g) is higher than RZT and SMZ (0.018 and 0.14 mg/g) in ultrapure water (1.6–1.8 fold). Batch tests showed that the equilibrium time of CBZ removal in the WWTP matrix (47 h) is much longer than CBZ removal in ultrapure water. The sorption capacity of RZT & SMZ in WWTP effluent (0.03, 0.33 mg/g) is higher than RZT and SMZ (0.02 and 0.17 mg/g) in ultrapure water (1.5–2 fold) using column test. This study has clearly demonstrated that the performance of RZT and SMZ is more efficient for the removal of CBZ from realistic wastewater than ultrapure water. It is evident that the surfactant modification of RZT has enhanced the CBZ removal in both matrices.

Simultaneous elimination of amoxicillin and antibiotic resistance genes in activated sludge process: Contributions of easy-to-biodegrade food

Antibiotics are continuously released into aquatic environments and ecosystems where they accumulate, which increases risks from the transmission of antibiotic resistance genes (ARGs). However, it is difficult to completely remove antibiotics by conventional biological methods, and during such treatment, ARGs may spread via the activated sludge process. Easy-to-biodegrade food have been reported to improve the removal of toxic pollutants, and therefore, this study investigated whether such co-substrates may also decrease the abundance of ARGs and their transferal. This study investigated amoxicillin (AMO) degradation using 0-100 mg/L acetate sodium as co-substrate in a sequencing biological reactor. Proteobacteria, Bacteroidetes, and Actinobacteria were identified as dominant phyla for AMO removal and mineralization. Furthermore, acetate addition increased the abundances of adeF and mdsC as efflux resistance genes, which improved microbial resistance, the coping ability of AMO toxicity, and the repair of the damage from AMO. As a result, acetate addition contributed to almost 100% AMO removal and stabilized the chemical oxygen demand (~20 mg/L) in effluents when the influent AMO fluctuated from 20 to 100 mg/L. Moreover, the total abundance of ARGs decreased by approximately ~30%, and the proportion of the most dominant antibiotic resistance bacteria Proteobacteria decreased by ~9%. The total abundance of plasmids that encode ARGs decreased by as much as ~30%, implying that the ARG spreading risks were alleviated. In summary, easy-to-biodegrade food contributed to the simultaneous elimination of antibiotics and ARGs in an activated sludge process.

A review on hospital wastewater treatment: A special emphasis on occurrence and removal of pharmaceutically active compounds, resistant microorganisms, and SARS-CoV-2

The hospital wastewater imposes a potent threat to the security of human health concerning its high vulnerability towards the outbreak of several diseases. Furthermore, the outbreak of COVID-19 pandemic demanded a global attention towards monitoring viruses and other infectious pathogens in hospital wastewater and their removal. Apart from that, the presence of various recalcitrant organics, pharmaceutically active compounds (PhACs), etc. imparts a complex pollution load to water resources and ecosystem. In this review, an insight into the occurrence, persistence and removal of drug-resistant microorganisms and infectious viruses as well as other micro-pollutants have been documented. The performance of various pilot/full-scale studies have been evaluated in terms of removal of biochemical oxygen demand (BOD), chemical oxygen demand (COD), total suspended solids (TSS), PhACs, pathogens, etc. It was found that many biological processes, such as membrane bioreactor, activated sludge process, constructed wetlands, etc. provided more than 80% removal of BOD, COD, TSS, etc. However, the removal of several recalcitrant organic pollutants are less responsive to those processes and demands the application of tertiary treatments, such as adsorption, ozone treatment, UV treatment, etc. Antibiotic-resistant microorganisms, viruses were found to be persistent even after the treatment of hospital wastewater, and high dose of chlorination or UV treatment was required to inactivate them. This article circumscribes the various emerging technologies, which have been used to treat PhACs and pathogens. The present review also emphasized the global concern of the presence of SARS-CoV-2 RNA in hospital wastewater and its removal by the existing treatment facilities.

Organic contaminants in Ganga basin: from the Green Revolution to the emerging concerns of modern India

The Ganga basin includes some of the most densely populated areas in the world, in a region characterized by extremely high demographic and economic growth rates. Although anthropogenic pressure in this area is increasing, the pollution status of the Ganga is still poorly studied and understood. In the light of this, we have carried out a systematic literature review of the sources, levels and spatiotemporal distribution of organic pollutants in surface water and sediment of the Ganga basin, including for the first time emerging contaminants (ECs). We have identified 61 publications over the past thirty years, with data on a total of 271 organic compounds, including pesticides, industrial chemicals, and by-products, artificial sweeteners, pharmaceuticals, and personal care products (PPCPs).

The most studied organic contaminants are pesticides, whereas knowledge of industrial compounds and PPCPs, among which some of the major ECs, is highly fragmentary. Most studies focus on the main channel of the Ganga, the Yamuna, the Gomti, and the deltaic region, while most of the Ganga's major tributaries, and the entire southern part of the catchment, have not been investigated. Hotspots of contamination coincide with major urban agglomerations, including Delhi, Kolkata, Kanpur, Varanasi, and Patna. Pesticides levels have decreased at most of the sites over recent decades, while potentially harmful concentrations of polychlorinated biphenyls (PCBs), organotin compounds (OTCs), and some PPCPs have been detected in the last ten years. Considering the limited geographical coverage of sampling and number of analyzed compounds, this review highlights the need for a more careful selection of locations, compounds and environmental matrices, prioritizing PPCPs and catchment-scale, source-to-sink studies.

Pitfalls in the Immunochemical Determination of β-Lactam Antibiotics in Water

Contamination of waters with pharmaceuticals is an alarming problem as it may support the evolution of antimicrobial resistance. Therefore, fast and cost-effective analytical methods for potential on-site analysis are desired in order to control the water quality and assure the safety of its use as a source of drinking water. Antibody-based methods, such as the enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay (ELISA), can be helpful in this regard but can also have certain pitfalls in store, depending on the analyte. As shown here for the class of β-lactam antibiotics, hydrolysis of the β-lactam ring is a key factor in the immunochemical analysis as it influences antibody recognition. With the antibody used in this study, the limit of detection (LOD) in the immunoassay could be significantly reduced by hydrolysis for the five tested penicillins, with the lowest LOD for carbenicillin (0.2 nmol/L) and the greatest impact on penicillins G and V (reduction by 85%). In addition to enhanced quantification, our strategy also provides access to information about the degree of hydrolysis in water samples as shown for the most abundant penicillin amoxicillin.

Prevalence and hazardous impact of pharmaceutical and personal care products and antibiotics in environment: A review on emerging contaminants

Antibiotic resistance is a global health emergency linked to unrestrained use of pharmaceutical and personal care products (PPCPs) as prophylactic agent and therapeutic purposes across various industries. Occurrence of pharmaceuticals are identified in ground water, surface water, soils, and wastewater treatment plants (WWTPs) in ng/L to μg/L concentration range. The prevalence of organic compounds including antimicrobial agents, hormones, antibiotics, preservatives, disinfectants, synthetic musks etc. in environment have posed serious health concerns. The aim of this review is to elucidate the major sources accountable for emergence of antibiotic resistance. For this purpose, variety of introductory sources and fate of PPCPs in aquatic environment including human and veterinary wastes, aquaculture and agriculture related wastes, and other anthropogenic activities have been discussed. Furthermore, genetic and enzymatic factors responsible for transfer and appearance of antibiotic resistance genes are presented. Ecotoxicity of PPCPs has been studied in environment in order to present risk imposed to human and ecological health. As per published literature reports, the removal of antibiotics and related traces being difficult, couples the possibility of emergence of antibiotic resistance and hence sustainability in global water resources. Therefore, research on environmental behavior and control strategies should be conducted along with assessing their chronic toxicity to identify potential human and ecological risks.

Immobilization and retention of caffeine in soil amended with Ulva reticulata biochar

The goal of the present study was to evaluate the immobilization and retention of caffeine (CFN) in soil and the influence of biochar for the CFN transport in agricultural soil. The biochar was produced from the Ulva reticulata seaweed biomass (ULBC) under the slow-pyrolysis with a heating rate of 7 °C/min at 500 °C and characterized using XRD and FTIR. The CFN retention and transport abilities in loamy sand and ULBC amended (2.5%) soil were evaluated under various pH values range of 3-10 and at various CFN concentrations using batch and column experiments. The surface orientation of ULBC was portrayed as the randomized distribution of hetero and homogeneous nature. The highest retention capacity (40 μg/g) was obtained at pH 4.0. Soil amendment with ULBC shows a higher retention affinity towards CFN, of up to 150 μg/g than soil, with minimal pH dependence. The maximum CFN adsorption capacities of soil and amended soils were 420 and 820 μg/g, respectively, based on the Langmuir model. Batch experiments suggested the adsorption of CFN by the biochar amended loamy soil is governed by the electrostatic attraction. The column experiment data demonstrated a high transport potential of CFN in the loamy sand; however, a strong cumulative reduction of transport (58%) was observed with the application of ULBC into the loamy sand. Thus, the addition of seaweed biochar as an amendment in soils with biosolids and wastewater irrigation may reduce the mobilization of CFN to the aquatic system and possibly reduce plant uptake.

Remoción de cinco productos farmacéuticos catalogados como contaminantes emergentes en medio acuoso utilizando la especie vetiver (Chrysopogon zizanioides)

Los productos farmacéuticos constituyen un grupo único de contaminantes emergentes de gran interés, debido a que se ha determinado su presencia frecuente en aguas superficiales, subterráneas y agua potable. Debido al metabolismo y la absorción incompletos en el organismo humano, una cantidad significativa de estos fármacos se excretan y liberan al ambiente a través de las aguas residuales. Por lo que el objetivo de este trabajo fue evaluar el potencial de la especie vetiver (Chrysopogon zizanioides) para eliminar del medio acuoso cinco productos farmacéuticos comúnmente recetados y de venta libre como ciprofloxacina, ibuprofeno, sulfametaxazol, diclofenaco y acetaminofén. La especie fue aclimatada en invernado, donde se llevó a cabo los experimentos en condiciones controladas de temperatura y a un pH de 6,5. Las muestras fueron analizadas utilizando espectrofotometría UV-Vis para leer en forma directa las absorbancias de cada producto farmacéutico. Para el análisis estadístico de los datos se empleó la metodología de superficies de respuesta con el fin de encontrar los modelos que ayuden a determinar tiempos y concentraciones óptimas donde se maximiza la absorción de cada fármaco, así como la obtención de las pendientes de crecimiento para determinar hacia donde se deberá buscar el óptimo. Se utilizó el software estadístico R versión 3.6.0 y RStudio versión 1.1.453. Los resultados obtenidos indican que C. zizanioides removió de manera más eficiente ciprofloxacina (98,3%) a una concentración de 3mg/L en un tiempo de 149h, seguido por ibuprofeno y diclofenaco con un máximo de remoción de 73,33% y sulfametaxazol con 66,53%, obteniéndose el menor porcentaje de remoción para acetaminofén de 38,49% a las 192h, donde se realizó toma de muestras cada 48 horas de las soluciones de cada fármaco a diferentes concentraciones (3 mg/L, 6 mg/L, 9 mg/L, 12 mg/L). En este trabajo de investigación se demostró la capacidad removedora de Chrysopogon zizanioides de los cinco fármacos estudiados en medio acuoso en condiciones controladas, vislumbrando un gran potencial en el ámbito de la biotecnología ambiental para el tratamiento terciario de aguas residuales.

Presencia de productos farmacéuticos en el agua y su impacto en el ambiente

Los productos farmacéuticos (PFs) constituyen un grupo importante de los contaminantes emergentes (CE), debido a su potencial para inducir efectos fisiológicos adversos a bajas concentraciones en humanos y animales. Muchos estudios alrededor del mundo han reportado la presencia de un sin número de estos compuestos en diferentes medios acuáticos, lo que genera preocupación por los posibles efectos negativos que se producen en el agua, en la salud humana y la vida silvestre. En este contexto, este artículo tiene por objetivo presentar una revisión de los aspectos más relevantes sobre la presencia de PFs en el agua en un ámbito global desde el año 2010 hasta el 2019. El mayor número de estudios reportan presencia de contaminantes emergentes incluyendo fármacos de diferentes tipos en aguas superficiales, aguas subterráneas, aguas residuales y agua potable. Las principales fuentes de ingreso de fármacos en los sistemas acuáticos provienen de las aguas residuales que recogen aguas domésticas, efluentes hospitalarios y efluentes de fábricas sin tratamiento o inadecuadamente tratadas antes de ser liberadas a ríos y mares. La presencia de PFs en el ambiente acuático preocupa por su persistencia, la bioacumulación, la toxicidad y la generación de resistencia a antibióticos de muchos microorganismos, entre otras consecuencias aún no estudiadas en el ambiente.

Removal of Pharmaceutical Residues from Water and Wastewater Using Dielectric Barrier Discharge Methods-A Review

Persistent pharmaceutical pollutants (PPPs) have been identified as potential endocrine disruptors that mimic growth hormones when consumed at nanogram per litre to microgram per litre concentrations. Their occurrence in potable water remains a great threat to human health. Different conventional technologies developed for their removal from wastewater have failed to achieve complete mineralisation. Advanced oxidation technologies such as dielectric barrier discharges (DBDs) based on free radical mechanisms have been identified to completely decompose PPPs. Due to the existence of pharmaceuticals as mixtures in wastewater and the recalcitrance of their degradation intermediate by-products, no single advanced oxidation technology has been able to eliminate pharmaceutical xenobiotics. This review paper provides an update on the sources, occurrence, and types of pharmaceuticals in wastewater by emphasising different DBD configurations previously and currently utilised for pharmaceuticals degradation under different experimental conditions. The performance of the DBD geometries was evaluated considering various factors including treatment time, initial concentration, half-life time, degradation efficiency and the energy yield (G50) required to degrade half of the pollutant concentration. The review showed that the efficacy of the DBD systems on the removal of pharmaceutical compounds depends not only on these parameters but also on the nature/type of the pollutant.

Aluminized surface to improve solar light absorption in open reactors: Application for micropollutants removal in effluents from municipal wastewater treatment plants

This work proposes the evaluation of an aluminized surface on the bottom of open reactors to perform a photo-Fenton process, at circumneutral pH (using Fe III-Ethylenediamine-N,N'-disuccinic acid complex), for elimination of micropollutants (MPs) in real effluents from municipal wastewater treatment plants (EMWWTP). Firstly, the strategy was to initially investigate the real EMWWTP spiked with several MPs (acetaminophen, diclofenac, carbamazepine, caffeine, trimethoprim and sulfamethoxazole) with 20 and 100 μg L^-1 in a laboratory scale (evaluated by HPLC-UV) using a solar simulator. Finally, the removal of all MCs present in the real EMWWTP was monitored (evaluated by HPLC-MS) in a pilot-scale (90 L) in a raceway pond reactor (RPR). The treatment time required for degradation above 80% for the investigated MPs was over 30 min, and the predominant effect could be mainly associated with organics present in the real EMWWTP due to the light attenuation and scavenging of radical species. Moreover, the results confirmed that chloride and sulfate would most likely equally not affect the process. The use of an aluminized surface on the bottom of RPRs has been confirmed as a suitable option to improve the photo-Fenton reaction, enabling the use of lower doses of iron. Up to 60 different MPs found in EMWWTP have been successfully degraded using 0.1 mM of Fe at circumneutral pH with a consumption of 30 mg L^-1 H₂O₂ with less than 45 min.

Emerging contaminants in the water bodies of the Middle East and North Africa (MENA): A critical review

Many emerging contaminants (ECs) are not currently removed by conventional water treatment methods and consequently, often reach the aquatic environment. In the absence of proper management strategies, ECs can accumulate in water bodies, which poses potential environmental and health risks. This paper critically reviews, for the first time, the reported occurrence and treatment of ECs in the Middle Eastern and North Africa (MENA) region. The paper also provides recommendations to properly manage EC risks. In the MENA region, pharmaceuticals and personal care products (PPCPs) have been detected in surface water, seawater, groundwater, and wastewater treatment plants. A focus on surface water in the published literature suggests that studies are skewed towards worldwide trends, whereas studies on ECs in seawater are of great importance in the study region. The types of PPCPs detected in the MENA region vary, but anti-inflammatories and antibiotics dominate. In comparison, microplastics have mainly been studied in surface waters and seawater with much less focus on drinking water. The majority of microplastics in the region are secondary types resulting from the degradation of larger plastic debris; polyethylene (PE) and polypropylene (PP) fibers are the most frequently detected polymers, which are indicative of local anthropogenic sources. Research progress on ECs varies between countries, having received more attention in Iran and Tunisia. Most MENA countries have now begun monitoring water bodies for ECs; however, studies are still lacking in some countries including Sudan, Djibouti, Syria, Ethiopia, and Bahrain. Based on this review, critical knowledge gaps and research needs are identified. Countries in the MENA region require further research on a broader range of EC types. Overall, water pollution due to the use and release of ECs can be tackled by improving public awareness, public campaigns, government intervention, and advanced monitoring and treatment methods.

Optimization of growth conditions for enhancing the production of microbial laccase and its application in treating antibiotic contamination in wastewater

In this work, seven indigenous macrofungal isolates were selected to screen for their laccase production capability. Among them, isolates viz., Pleurotus eryngii, Pleurotus florida, Pleurotus sajor caju and Gandoderma lucidum were found to exhibit high laccase activity in the preliminary studies and were thus selected for the optimization studies with an aim to enhance laccase production. The pH optimization studies were carried out between pH range of 4-6. The laccase activity and biomass were found to be optimum at pH 4, 4.5, 4.5 and 5 for P. eryngii, P. florida, P. sajor caju and G. lucidum, respectively. Optimization studies with chemical inducers namely, tannic acid, 2,6 dimethoxyphenol and copper sulphate at three different concentration levels were conducted and tannic acid at 2 mM concentration was found to increase the laccase activity to about 45% followed by 2,6 dimethoxyphenol (2 mM) with an increase of about 43% and copper sulphate (0.1 mM) showing 21% increase in the yield. Biodegradation studies utilizing laccase isolated from P. eryngii, P. florida and P. sajor caju was carried out for a commonly detected fluoroquinolone antibiotic, levofloxacin, in water and pharmaceutical wastewater. The results indicated that the degradation efficiency of levofloxacin using laccase isolated from P. eryngii (88.9%) was comparable to commercial laccase (89%). When the cost economics of using crude laccase was evaluated against commercial laccase it was evident that the total cost of the treatment could be reduced by 71.7% if commercial grade laccase was replaced by crude enzyme extracted from indigenous macrofungi such Pleurotus eryngii, Pleurotus florida, and Pleurotus sajor caju indicating a promising and cost-effective alternative for wastewater treatment.

Optimization of a Method for Extraction and Determination of Residues of Selected Antimicrobials in Soil and Plant Samples Using HPLC-UV-MS/MS

The residues of antimicrobials used in human and veterinary medicine are popular pollutants of anthropogenic origin. The main sources of introducing antimicrobials into the environment are sewage treatment plants and the agricultural industry. Antimicrobials in animal manure contaminate the surrounding soil as well as groundwater, and can be absorbed by plants. The presence of antimicrobials in food of plant origin may pose a threat to human health due to their high biological activity. As part of the research, a procedure was developed for the extraction and determination of ciprofloxacin, enrofloxacin, cefuroxime, nalidixic acid and metronidazole in environmental samples (soil and parsley root). An optimized solid-liquid extraction (SLE) method was used to separate antimicrobials from the solid samples and a mixture of citrate buffer (pH = 4): methanol (1:1; v/v) was used as the extraction solvent. Solid phase extraction (SPE) with OASIS^® HLB cartridges was used to purify and pre-concentrate the sample. The recovery of the developed method was in the range of 55–108%. Analytes were determined by high-performance liquid chromatography coupled with an ultraviolet (UV) detector and a tandem mass spectrometer (HPLC-UV-MS/MS). The procedure was validated and applied to the determination of selected antimicrobials in soil and parsley root samples. Five types of soil and five types of parsley roots of different origins were analyzed. The presence of nalidixic acid in the parsley root samples was found in the concentration range of 0.14–0.72 ng g⁻¹. It has been shown that antimicrobials are absorbed by the plant and can accumulate antimicrobials in its edible parts.

Determination of antimicrobial concentration and associated risk in water sources in West Bengal state of India

The presence of antimicrobials in wastewater (WW), surface water (SW), groundwater (GW), and even in potable water from treatment plants has been reported from many countries. Their presence in the water sources is causing the rise and spread of antimicrobial resistance (AMR), thereby threatening our public health, global economy, and development. This necessitates the constant monitoring of these compounds along with the evaluation of their associated risk to aquatic organisms. In this study, GW, WW, and SW samples from different parts of West Bengal (India) were analyzed using the SPE-HPLC-DAD method for detecting two frequently used fluoroquinolones (ciprofloxacin, CIP and ofloxacin, OFL). The highest concentration of CIP and OFL was 5.75 μg/L (GW) and 17.84 μg/L (WW), respectively. The antimicrobial activity was determined against Escherichia coli and Staphylococcus aureus isolates from WW against CIP, which showed that Escherichia coli and Staphylococcus aureus had developed ~ 69 and ~ 12 times resistance compared to their respective pure strains. The risk assessment showed that CIP poses an insignificant threat to fish and Daphnia (RQ < 1) but a significant threat to green algae and Microcystis aeruginosa (RQ> > 1). OFL concentration also poses a great threat to all the organisms for which the assessment was made (RQ> > 1). Moreover, risk assessment in terms of AMR showed that the present level of these antimicrobials in different water sources could cause the development of resistance among the microbial community (RQ > 1). These results emphasize the need for constant monitoring of pharmaceutical compounds, especially antimicrobials, to be kept under check.

Interactive effects of micro/nanoplastics and nanomaterials/pharmaceuticals: Their ecotoxicological consequences in the aquatic systems

Micro/nanoplastics are ubiquitous in the environment and cause pollution of the aquatic ecosystem, in particular, which is a serious concern worldwide. Micro/nanoplastics can act as a vector for multiple co-contaminants that co-exist in the aquatic environment. Apart from micro/nanoplastics, nanomaterials and pharmaceuticals are other emerging contaminants that can also raise severe problems. Thus, in this review, the physicochemical interactions occurring between micro/nanoplastics and nanomaterials and pharmaceuticals and the factors (chemical and environmental) affecting the sorption efficiency of nanomaterials and pharmaceuticals have been addressed. Furthermore, the influence of micro/nanoplastics on the bioavailability and toxic effects of nanomaterials and pharmaceuticals on both freshwater and marine species has been highlighted. Additional focus has also been given to study the mechanism of toxicity of the micro/nanoplastics-nanomaterials and pharmaceuticals complex on the different species of different trophic levels. Finally, this review addresses the knowledge gaps and provides insights into the future research strategies to better understand the interactive mechanisms between the binary contaminants and also the toxicity mechanisms of micro/nanoplastics and nanomaterials and pharmaceuticals.

Diarylureas: Repositioning from Antitumor to Antimicrobials or Multi-Target Agents against New Pandemics

Antimicrobials have allowed medical advancements over several decades. However, the continuous emergence of antimicrobial resistance restricts efficacy in treating infectious diseases. In this context, the drug repositioning of already known biological active compounds to antimicrobials could represent a useful strategy. In 2002 and 2003, the SARS-CoV pandemic immobilized the Far East regions. However, the drug discovery attempts to study the virus have stopped after the crisis declined. Today’s COVID-19 pandemic could probably have been avoided if those efforts against SARS-CoV had continued. Recently, a new coronavirus variant was identified in the UK. Because of this, the search for safe and potent antimicrobials and antivirals is urgent. Apart from antiviral treatment for severe cases of COVID-19, many patients with mild disease without pneumonia or moderate disease with pneumonia have received different classes of antibiotics. Diarylureas are tyrosine kinase inhibitors well known in the art as anticancer agents, which might be useful tools for a reposition as antimicrobials. The first to come onto the market as anticancer was sorafenib, followed by some other active molecules. For this interesting class of organic compounds antimicrobial, antiviral, antithrombotic, antimalarial, and anti-inflammatory properties have been reported in the literature. These numerous properties make these compounds interesting for a new possible pandemic considering that, as well as for other viral infections also for CoVID-19, a multitarget therapeutic strategy could be favorable. This review is meant to be an overview on diarylureas, focusing on their biological activities, not dwelling on the already known antitumor activity. Quite a lot of papers present in the literature underline and highlight the importance of these molecules as versatile scaffolds for the development of new and promising antimicrobials and multitarget agents against new pandemic events.

Acute effects of acetaminophen on the developmental, swimming performance and cardiovascular activities of the African catfish embryos/larvae (Clarias gariepinus)

Acetaminophen is a widely used analgesic that has been detected in many water bodies with few reports concerning its potential toxicity to fish. This study sought to assess the developmental, swimming performance and cardiovascular activities of embryo/larvae catfish (Clarias gariepinus) exposed to acetaminophen. The Organization for Economic Development (OECD) Fish Embryo Acute Toxicity Test (OECD 236) was employed. Fertilized embryo were exposed to different concentrations of acetaminophen (0, 0.5, 1, 10 µg/L) for 96 h. Hatching rates of the embryo were observed to decrease with increasing concentrations of acetaminophen. Fish embryo exposed to acetaminophen displayed varying levels of teratogenic effects at different levels of development in a dose-dependent manner. The results also showed a significant (p < 0.05) dose-dependent increase in swimming speed and movement patterns in fish larvae exposed to acetaminophen, with distance travelled in larvae exposed to the highest concentration of acetaminophen (10 µg/L) about eight (8) times the distance travelled by the control larvae, indicating that acetaminophen-induced erratic swimming behaviour in the catfish species. Cardiotoxicity was evident, with a significant reduction in heartbeat rate with increasing concentrations of acetaminophen. The results showed that exposure to acetaminophen resulted in teratogenic, neurotoxic and cardiotoxic effects in embryo/larvae of Clarias gariepinus. The findings suggest that acetaminophen which has recently been detected in many water bodies could potentially impact on survival of aquatic life, especially catfish.

A Systematic Review on Occurrence and Ecotoxicity of Organic UV Filters in Aquatic Organisms

The growing production of cosmetic products such as organic UV filters (OUVFs) in recent years has raised concern regarding their safety to human and environmental health. The inability of wastewater treatment plants in removing these chemical entities and their high octanol-water partition coefficient values tend to result in the persistence of OUVFs in several environmental matrices, leading these to be categorized as "emerging environmental contaminants" because of their unknown risk. Besides aquatic ecosystem contamination, the application of sludge disposal equally threatens terrestrial biota. Besides, the available reviews focusing on levels of OUVFs in aqueous systems (freshwater and marine), instrumental analysis from various samples, and specific toxicity effects, compiled information on the ecotoxicity of OUVFs is currently lacking. Hence, the present manuscript systematically reviews the ecotoxicity of OUVFs in freshwater and marine organisms occupying lower to higher trophic levels, including the underlying mechanisms of action and current knowledge gaps. The available scientific evidence suggests that OUVFs are a prime candidate for environmental concern due to their potential toxic effects. To the best of our knowledge, this is the first document detailing the toxicological effects of OUVFs in aquatic organisms.

Recent advancement in remediation of synthetic organic antibiotics from environmental matrices: Challenges and perspective

Continuous discharge and persistence of antibiotics in aquatic ecosystem is identified as emerging environment health hazard. Partial degradation and inappropriate disposal induce appearance of diverse antibiotic resistant genes (ARGs) and bacteria, hence their execution is imperative. Conventional methods including waste water treatment plants (WWTPs) are found ineffective for the removal of recalcitrant antibiotics. Therefore, constructive removal of antibiotics from environmental matrices and other alternatives have been discussed. This review summarizes present scenario and removal of micro-pollutants, antibiotics from environment. Various strategies including physicochemical, bioremediation, use of bioreactor, and biocatalysts are recognized as potent antibiotic removal strategies. Microbial Fuel Cells (MFCs) and biochar have emerged as promising biodegradation processes due to low cost, energy efficient and environmental benignity. With higher removal rate (20-50%) combined/ hybrid processes seems to be more efficient for permanent and sustainable elimination of reluctant antibiotics.

Enhanced activation of peroxydisulfate by strontium modified BiFeO3perovskite for ciprofloxacin degradation

A series of Sr-doped BiFeO₃ perovskites (Bi_1-xSr_xFeO₃, BSFO) fabricated via sol-gel method was applied as peroxydisulfate (PDS) activator for ciprofloxacin (CIP) degradation. Various technologies were used to characterize the morphology and physicochemical features of prepared BSFO samples and the results indicated that Sr was successfully inserted into the perovskites lattice. The catalytic performance of BiFeO₃ was significantly boosted by strontium doping. Specifically, Bi_0.9Sr_0.1FeO₃ (0.1BSFO) exhibited the highest catalytic performance for PDS activation to remove CIP, where 95% of CIP (10 mg/L) could be degraded with the addition of 1 g/L 0.1BSFO and 1 mmol/L PDS within 60 min. Moreover, 0.1BSFO displayed high reusability and stability with lower metal leaching. Weak acidic condition was preferred to neutral and alkaline conditions in 0.1BSFO/PDS system. The boosted catalytic performance can be interpreted as the lower oxidation state of Fe and the existence of affluent oxygen vacancies generated by Sr doping, that induced the formation of singlet oxygen (¹O₂) which was confirmed as the dominant reactive species by radical scavenging studies and electron spin resonance (ESR) tests. The catalytic oxidation mechanism related to major ¹O₂ and minor free radicals was proposed. Current study opens a new avenue to develop effective A-site modified perovskite and expands their application for PDS activation in wastewater remediation.

A Review on the Fate of Legacy and Alternative Antimicrobials and Their Metabolites during Wastewater and Sludge Treatment

Antimicrobial compounds are used in a broad range of personal care, consumer and healthcare products and are frequently encountered in modern life. The use of these compounds is being reexamined as their safety, effectiveness and necessity are increasingly being questioned by regulators and consumers alike. Wastewater often contains significant amounts of these chemicals, much of which ends up being released into the environment as existing wastewater and sludge treatment processes are simply not designed to treat many of these contaminants. Furthermore, many biotic and abiotic processes during wastewater treatment can generate significant quantities of potentially toxic and persistent antimicrobial metabolites and byproducts, many of which may be even more concerning than their parent antimicrobials. This review article explores the occurrence and fate of two of the most common legacy antimicrobials, triclosan and triclocarban, their metabolites/byproducts during wastewater and sludge treatment and their potential impacts on the environment. This article also explores the fate and transformation of emerging alternative antimicrobials and addresses some of the growing concerns regarding these compounds. This is becoming increasingly important as consumers and regulators alike shift away from legacy antimicrobials to alternative chemicals which may have similar environmental and human health concerns.

Sonochemical synthesis of amphoteric Cu0-Nanoparticles using Hibiscus rosa-sinensis extract and their applications for degradation of 5-fluorouracil and lovastatin drugs

Recent studies reported the detection of numerous emerging and active pharmaceutical constituents in the ground and surface water. To address these issues, the present study reported the ultrasound-assisted synthesis of zero-valent copper (Cu⁰) nanoparticles using Hibiscus rosa-sinensis extract as reducing and stabilizing agent. The catalyst was characterized using XRD, SEM, EDX, PSA, BET, etc., and the results revealed that sonochemical synthesis technique influenced the crystallinity with controlled growth of Cu⁰. While the hard ligand hydroxyl group (-OH) reduces the Cu²⁺ to Cu⁰ and soft ligand carbonyl group (CO) present in the oxidized polyphenols helps in capping and stabilizing the Cu⁰-nanoparticles. During the ultrasound application, continuous release of Cu⁺ from Cu⁰ promoted the degradation by producing OH and O₂^•- radicals. Approx. 91.3 % and 93.2 % degradation efficiencies were achieved for 5-fluorouracil and lovastatin. The results showed that Cu⁰ nanoparticles were amphoteric in nature and the synergy calculation revealed that ultrasound has a direct influence on degradation of drugs which are difficult to degrade/mineralize using conventional techniques. Based on the results, a possible degradation mechanism of drug molecules in the presence of oxidants, zero-valent copper and ultrasound has been proposed.

Ti-pillared montmorillonite clay for adsorptive removal of amoxicillin, imipramine, diclofenac-sodium, and paracetamol from water

The adsorptive removal of natural montmorillonite (MMT) clay pillared with titanium oxide (Ti-PILC) was examined in this study to see the adsorptive remove of pharmaceutical compounds (PCs): amoxicillin (AMOX), imipramine (IMP), Diclofenac-Sodium (DIF-S), and paracetamol (PCM) from water under a batch-scale study. The post-intercalation changes in clay were investigated with various surface and structural analysis techniques. The results confirm an increase in the surface area, microporosity, and acidic sites (lewis acid) which improved and regulates Ti-PILC interactions with electron-rich PPCPs molecules. The FTIR bands for Si-OH and Al-OH show a shift in MMT, after pillaring, indicates the intercalation of Ti pillared in its interlayer space. The isotherms studies suggested the best fitting of Redlich Peterson models for all pharmaceutical adsorption data. The Langmuir adsorption (maximum) was recorded for Ti-PILC in the order: 82.68 (IMP) > 23.05 (DIF-S) > 20.83 (PCM) > 4.26 (AMOX) mg.g^-1 at a fixed adsorbent dose i.e. 0.1 g·L^-1. The PCs adsorption kinetics was also evaluated by Pseudo-first-, and second-order model and results showed the best curve fitting for all PCs. Results of regeneration studies showed that modified Ti-PILC could be a low-cost cleaner material for adsorption of pharmaceuticals from water.

Effect of the tetracycline antibiotics on performance and microbial community of microbial fuel cell

The adverse effect of tetracycline antibiotics on microbial activity is one of the serious risks for the biologic wastewater treatment process. The microbial fuel cells (MFCs) are a promising technology for wastewater treatment and renewable power generation process. For this reason, the investigation of the inhibition effect of the tetracyclines on the MFCs is essential for reducing damage on the environment. This paper focused on the performance of MFCs under different antibiotic concentrations at the range of 0.25-50 mg/L. The power generation performance, microbial community and biofilm characteristics (morphology, resistance and viability) of MFCs were investigated in detail. The results indicated that the increase in the antibiotic concentration significantly affected the MFC performance and microbial community. A modified non-competitive inhibition model was used to predict the inhibition effect of tetracycline antibiotics on the MFCs.

Potential environmental toxicity of sewage effluent with pharmaceuticals

Sewage effluent effects on the biochemical parameters of Astyanax bimaculatus organs were investigateted. Treated sewage was collected in a treatment plant; 43 compounds, among them, pharmaceuticals and hormones, were investigated. Caffeine, ciprofloxacin, clindamycin, ofloxacin, oxytetracycline, paracetamol, sulfadiazine, sulfamethoxazole, sulfathiazole and tylosin waste was detected in the collected material. Fish were divided into four groups: control, TSE (treated sewage effluent), TSE + P (TSE with increased concentration of five pharmaceuticals) and PTSE (TSE + P post-treated with O₃/H₂O₂/UV). Biochemical parameters were evaluated in different organs after 14-day exposure. TBARS levels increased significantly in the brain of animals in the TSE and TSE + P groups in comparison to the control. There was significant reduction in TBARS levels recorded for the liver, muscle and gills of animals in the PTSE group in comparison to those of animals in the other groups. AChE activity reduced in the muscle of animals in the groups showing the highest pharmaceutical concentrations. CAT activity in the liver of animals in groups exposed to pharmaceutical effluent was inhibited. GST activity increased in brain of animals in the TSE + P and PTSE groups, whereas reduced levels of this activity were observed in liver of animals in the TSE group. Increased GST activity was observed in the brain of animals in TSE + P and PTSE groups. Based on integrated biomarker response values, the TSE + P group presented greater changes in the analyzed parameters. Results point out that pharmaceutical waste can cause oxidative stress, as well as affect biochemical and enzymatic parameters in Astyanax sp. Post-treatment can also reduce damages caused to fish, even in case of the likely formation of metabolites. Based on these results, these metabolites can be less toxic than the original compounds; however, they were not able to fully degrade the pharmaceutical waste found in the sewage, which can interfere in fish metabolism.

Occurrence, fate, and mass balance of selected pharmaceutical and personal care products (PPCPs) in an urbanized river

The identification and quantification of pharmaceutical and personal care products (PPCPs) in aquatic ecosystems is critical to further studies and elucidation of their fate as well as the potential threats to aquatic ecology and human health. This study used mass balances to analyse the sources, transformation, and transport of PPCPs in rivers based on the population and consumption habits of residents, the removal level of sewage treatment, the persistence and partitioning mechanisms of PPCPs, hydrological conditions, and other natural factors. Our results suggested that in an urbanized river of Guangzhou City, China, the daily consumption of PPCPs was the main reason for the variety of species and concentrations of PPCPs. Through the determination of PPCPs in the river water samples and a central composite design (CCD) methodology, the dominant elimination mechanisms of caffeine and carbamazepine from river water were photolysis and biodegradation, but that of triclosan was sorption rather than biodegradation. The mass data of 3 PPCPs were estimated and corroborated using the measured data to evaluate the accuracy of the mass balance. Finally, caffeine, carbamazepine and triclosan discharged from the Shijing River into the Pearl River accounted for 97.81%, 99.52%, and 28.00%, respectively, of the total mass of these three compounds in the surface water of Shijing River. The results suggest that photolysis are the main process of natural attenuation for selected PPCPs in surface waters of river systems, and the transfer processes of PPCPs is mainly attributed to riverine advection. In addition, the low concentration of dissolved oxygen inhibited the degradation of PPCPs in the surface water of Shijing River.
