Abstract
Introduction Attention deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) is a high-prevalent neurodevelopmental disorder characterized by inattention, impulsivity, and hyperactivity, frequently co-occurring with other psychiatric and medical conditions. Current diagnosis is time-consuming and often delays effective treatment; to date, no valid biomarker has been identified to facilitate this process. Research has linked the core symptoms of ADHD to autonomic dysfunction resulting from impaired arousal modulation, which contributes to physiological abnormalities that may serve as useful biomarkers for the disorder. While recent research has explored alternative objective assessment tools, few have specifically focused on studying ADHD autonomic dysregulation through physiological parameters. This study aimed to design a multiparametric physiological model to support ADHD diagnosis. Methods In this observational study we non-invasively analyzed heart rate variability (HRV), electrodermal activity (EDA), respiration, and skin temperature parameters of 69 treatment-naïve ADHD children and 29 typically developing (TD) controls (7-12 years old). To identify the most relevant parameters to discriminate ADHD children from controls, we explored the physiological behavior at baseline and during a sustained attention task and applied a logistic regression procedure. Results ADHD children showed increased HRV and lower EDA at baseline. The stress-inducing task elicits higher reactivity for EDA, pulse arrival time (PAT), and respiratory frequency in the ADHD group. The final classification model included 4 physiological parameters and was adjusted by gender and age. A good capacity to discriminate between ADHD children and TD controls was obtained, with an accuracy rate of 85.5% and an AUC of 0.95. Discussion Our findings suggest that a multiparametric physiological model constitutes an accurate tool that can be easily employed to support ADHD diagnosis in clinical practice. The discrimination capacity of the model may be analyzed in larger samples to confirm the possibility of generalization.

Abstract
Introduction: Exposure to a range of stressful life events (SLE) is implicated in youth psychopathology. Previous studies point to a discrepancy between parents'/children's reports regarding stressful life events. No study systematically assessed the correlation between such discrepancies and psychopathology in depressed youth. This study was designed to assess parent-youth discrepancies regarding stressful life events and its association with severity of psychopathology at baseline and response to selective serotonin reuptake inhibitor (SSRI) treatment in depressed youth. Methods: Reports regarding stressful life events were assessed in children/adolescents suffering from depressive/anxiety disorders using the life events checklist (LEC), a self-report questionnaire measuring the impact of negative life events (NLE) and positive life events (PLE), as reported by the children and their parents. The severity of depression/anxiety disorders and response to antidepressant treatment were evaluated and correlated with both measures of LEC. Results: Participants were 96 parent-child dyads (39 boys, 57 girls) aged 6-18 years (mean = 13.90 years, SD = 2.41). Parents reported more NLE and higher severity of NLE events than their children (number of NLE: 7.51 ± 4.17 vs. 6.04 ± 5.32; Cumulative severity of NLE: 24.95 ± 14.83 vs. 17.24 ± 12.94). Discrepancy in PLE, but not NLE, was associated with more severe psychopathology and reduced response to treatment. Discussion: Discrepancy in informant reports regarding life events in depressed/anxious youth, especially regarding PLE, is associated with more severe psychopathology and reduced response to pharmacotherapy. It is essential to use multiple reporters in assessing stressful life events in children.

Abstract
AIMS We aimed to investigate the relationship between Cognitive Disengagement Syndrome (CDS) and non-suicidal self injury (NSSI) in adolescents with attention deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD). METHODS A semi-structured psychiatric interview and an NSSI screening questionnaire were conducted. Questionnaires assessing CDS (with daydreamer, sleepy, and slow subdimensions), depression, anxiety, self-esteem, emotion regulation, coping strategies, and loneliness were administered. RESULTS Among 104 participants (n: 63, 60.6% girls), the combined type of ADHD was the most common (66.3%), and 35 adolescents (27 girls) were in the NSSI+ group. Although only depression and ADHD were found to be predictors of NSSI in ADHD, CDS was associated with many risk factors of NSSI in ADHD: depression, anxiety, emotion dysregulation, low self-esteem, and emotion-oriented coping ways. After controlling for the effects of cognitive problems/inattentiveness, depression, and anxiety, CDS still correlated with low self-esteem and emotion dysregulation. The daydreamer and slow sub-dimensions of CSD differed between NSSI+ and NSSI- groups, while sleepy did not. CONCLUSIONS CDS is associated with several relevant factors, indirectly relating it to self-harm in ADHD. CDS increases the vulnerability to mental health changes that could lead to NSSI in adolescence with ADHD.

Abstract
Concussion often results in psychological symptoms, including anxiety. Post-concussion anxiety has been well documented, although much of this research has focused on collegiate athletes. The purpose of this study was to compare (1) anxiety symptoms in concussed and healthy controls over time and (2) to explore sex differences in post-concussion anxiety within the context of pubertal development. Participants (N = 126, mean age = 15.1 years old), including concussed (n = 86) and healthy adolescents (n = 40), completed the Pubertal Development Scale (PDS) and the Screen for Child Anxiety and Related Disorders (SCARED-C). The concussed groups completed SCARED-C at three visits (<10 days, 4 weeks, 3 months). Results of an analysis of covariance (ANCOVA) and multi-variate analysis of covariance (MANCOVA) found concussed adolescents reported higher SCARED-C total, generalized, and panic anxiety scores than healthy controls, after controlling for sex, age, and PDS score (PDSS). A three-way mixed ANCOVA examined the effects of sex, PDSS, time, and their interaction on SCARED-C total score in concussed adolescents while controlling for age. There was a significant three-way interaction between sex, age, and PDSS on SCARED-C total score while controlling for age. Overall, we observed increased anxiety in concussed adolescents, compared with controls, as well as greater post-concussion anxiety reported by females compared with males, including within PDSS groups. Concussion providers should be prepared to receive training to administer well-validated measures of psychopathology and should consider that female adolescents, compared with males, regardless of pubertal development, may be at greater risk for post-concussion anxiety.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Social media use has been correlated to worsening anxiety and depression in teenagers. LOCAL PROBLEM In the United Staes, social media is frequently used amongst adolescents, and rates of anxiety and depression in this population have increased over time. METHODS A convenience sample of adolescents aged 12 to 18 years old were evaluated using a pre-post design. INTERVENTIONS This quality improvement project introduced screen time assessment and motivational interviewing to decrease social media use and improve mental health among adolescents. RESULTS PHQ-9 scores remained consistent throughout the project. There was an overall decrease in participant SCARED scores and social media use declined over the 12-week period. CONCLUSIONS Results from this project suggest an opportunity for pediatric healthcare providers to standardize social media use screening in adolescent care and utilize motivational interviewing to promote adolescent wellbeing.

Abstract
OBJECTIVE Research is needed to examine discrimination-related stressors and their social and psychological shaping of mental health and sleep outcomes of Latinx youth. The background, design, and methodology of a longitudinal study of Mexican families in Indiana and the initial findings of associations between discrimination-related stressors and youth mental health and sleep outcomes are presented. METHOD Initiating wave 1 of a 3-wave (yearly) longitudinal study, investigators surveyed an ethnically homogeneous sample of 344 Mexican-origin adolescents (ages 12-15) and their primary caregivers, assessing risks and protective factors for mental health and sleep outcomes. Youth also completed a one-time 21-day daily diary after wave 1. Self-reported measures of youth mental health, sleep, and discrimination across wave 1 and the daily diary were evaluated to compare the cross-sectional (wave 1) and daily associations between discrimination and youth mental health and sleep outcomes. RESULTS Of youth, 88.1% reported at least one incident of lifetime discrimination. Almost one-third had elevated depressive symptoms, 44.5% had probable generalized anxiety disorder, and 50.9% had poor sleep quality. Between-youth correlations at wave 1 and in the daily diary were consistent in that perceived racial discrimination was positively correlated with worse mental health and poorer sleep quality. Smaller within-youth correlations were observed in the daily diary, but there was striking variability in the effect of discrimination across youth. CONCLUSION The present results illustrate the powerful methods of combining yearly and daily time data to investigate how and for whom discrimination-related stressors lead to adverse outcomes. PLAIN LANGUAGE SUMMARY Latinx youth are the largest and fastest growing minoritized youth group in the United States. This study surveyed 344 Mexican-origin adolescents and their primary caregivers to assess risk and protective factors for mental health and sleep outcomes. The authors found that 88.1% of youth reported at least one incident of lifetime discrimination, 29.7% reported elevated depressive symptoms, 44.5% reported elevated anxiety symptoms, and 50.9% reported poor sleep quality. Youth who experienced racial discrimination were more likely to have worse mental health and lower sleep quality than those who did not experience racial discrimination. Abstract
Globally, more than 13 % of adolescents have clinically significant mental health problems, with anxiety and depression comprising over 40 % of cases. Despite the high prevalence of anxiety disorders among youth, dietary research has been focused on youth with depression, resulting in a significant knowledge gap regarding the impact of anxiety on adolescent diet quality. Adolescents with diagnosed anxiety disorders and healthy controls were included in this study. Anxiety symptoms were measured using the Screen for Child Anxiety-Related Disorders. Diagnosis of anxiety disorder was determined using the Kiddie Schedule for Affective Disorders and Schizophrenia interview. Five diet quality indices were scored from FFQ. Diet quality indices associated with anxiety symptoms in the correlation matrix were interrogated using multiple linear regression modelling. All models were adjusted for depression. One hundred and twenty-eight adolescents (mean age 14·8 years (sd: 2·1); 66·4 % female) were included in this cross-sectional analysis. Although healthy controls and outpatient participants had similar unhealthy dietary index subscale scores, outpatient participants had lower healthy index scores. Higher anxiety symptoms were associated with lower healthy dietary indices in univariate analysis; after adjusting for comorbid depression; however, anxiety symptoms were no longer associated with dietary indices following adjustment for multiple testing (P = 0·038 to P = 0·077). The association between anxiety symptoms and a poor diet is attenuated by depression. The results of this study support the need for an integrated approach to the assessment of mental and physical well-being and further research aimed at understanding the unique contribution of depression to healthy dietary patterns.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Data on Emotion Dysregulation among youth in Lebanon is scarce. Given that Emotion Dysregulation is associated with psychopathology and has a negative impact on youth outcomes, there is a need to better understand the prevalence, clinical and demographic correlates of Emotion Dysregulation. METHODS This study is a secondary analysis of the Psychopathology in Children and Adolescents in Lebanon Study which recruited 1517 youth and one parent from a nationally representative sample. Participants completed The Screen for Child Anxiety Related Emotional Disorders, Mood and Feelings Questionnaire, Strengths and Difficulties Questionnaire, Peer Relations Questionnaire, Conflict Behavior Questionnaire (CBQ).Parents completed a sociodemographic questionnaire and the General Health Questionnaire (GHQ). The Strengths and Difficulties Questionnaire-Dysregulation Profile was used to measure Emotion Dysregulation. RESULTS The prevalence of Emotion Dysregulation was 11.26% among children aged 5 to < 8 years, 9.40% among children aged 8 to < 12 years and 6.60% among those older than 12 years. Emotion Dysregulation was associated with psychopathology across age groups and a number of correlates were identified. In the final regression models, among children aged 5 to < 8 years; Emotion Dysregulation was associated with lower odds of father employment (OR = 0.235;CI[0.078,0.704]). For those aged 8 to < 12 years old, Emotion Dysregulation was associated with acceptable school performance (OR = 2.246,CI[1.209,4.173]) as opposed to a good school performance, having a chronic physical illness (OR = 2.962; CI [1.495,5.867)], and higher parental GHQ scores (OR = 1.034;CI [1.010,10.58)] indicating worse parental mental health. Adolescents aged 12 years and older who screened positive for Emotion Dysregulation were more likely to be younger (OR = 0.688, CI[0.527,0.899]), be a bully (OR = 2.467;CI[1.036,5.875] and to have higher parental CBQ scores (OR = 1.092;CI [1.011,1.180]), indicating worse parent-child conflict. Youth who screened positive for emotion dysregulation were more likely to seek psychiatric care than their counterparts who screen negative for emotion dysregulation. CONCLUSION Age, school performance, parental mental health, parental conflict, chronic physical illness and bullying emerge as important correlates of Emotion Dysregulation. Findings add to the limited data on Emotion Dysregulation in Lebanon and the region and are a first step towards developing intervention and prevention strategies.

Abstract
BACKGROUND The physical changes that accompany the onset of puberty demand a constant restructuring of the adolescent's perception of their body and may influence adolescents' mental health. AIM To describe weight status perception and its association with socio-demographic characteristics (SDC) and mental health disorders among adolescents in a low and middle-income country (LMIC). METHODS We conducted a cross-sectional study in high schools in the urban area of the governorate of Sousse, Tunisia in 2018. We included in our study all students studying in selected classes in selected public high schools and who are consented to participate. Multinomial logistic regression was used to assess the associated factors to weight perception categories. RESULTS The total number of students participating was 1399 with a response rate of 86.68%. The female sex was predominant (60.5% versus 39.5%). The mean age was of 17.03 ± 1.51 years. According to multivariate analysis, perceived weight categories were associated with sociodemographic factors such as gender and maternal educational level. Adolescents perceiving themselves as obese were at risk for severe depression (aOR = 0.40; p = 0.033). The BMI was associated with weight misperception: adolescents with normal weight tend to overestimate their weight (obesity aOR = 0.13, p = 0.017; overweight aOR = 0.1, p = 0.001). CONCLUSION There was a clear discrepancy between the actual weight status of the teens and their self-perceived weight. Adolescents are still growing both physically and mentally, and forming their self-image. Thus, health promotion practices designed to create accurate perceptions of current body weight need to be part of prevention efforts.

Abstract
BACKGROUND In recent years, suicidal thoughts and behaviors have become increasingly common among children and adolescents, leading to an elevation in the number of visits to emergency departments in pediatric hospitals. In Israel, the rising demand for mental health treatment due to suicidal distress is also salient, creating prolonged wait periods and low case acceptance rates. Addressing the urgent need for streamlined interventions, the present study outlines the design and results of a non-inferiority effectiveness trial of an ultra-brief suicide crisis intervention based on Interpersonal Psychotherapy for Adolescents (IPT-A-SCI). METHODS 309 children and adolescents presenting to the Depression and Suicide Clinic at Schneider Children's Medical Center of Israel with depressive and anxiety symptoms and/or suicidal ideation/behavior were assigned to either IPT-A-SCI, Treatment as Usual (TAU), or waitlist condition. Assessments were conducted pre- and post-intervention/after five sessions/five weeks (as secondary assessments) in accordance with group assignment. RESULTS At secondary assessment, post IPT-A-SCI, suicide ideation, and behavior as well as depression and anxiety symptoms significantly decreased, with no group differences observed between IPT-A-SCI, TAU, and control groups. CONCLUSION IPT-A-SCI is feasible and as effective as the standard treatment in reducing suicidal, depressive, and anxiety symptoms among children and adolescents.

Abstract
Individuals with high environmental sensitivity have nervous systems that are disproportionately receptive to both the protective and imperilling aspects of the environment, suggesting their mental health is strongly context-dependent. However, there have been few consolidated attempts to examine putative markers of sensitivity, across different levels of analysis, within a single cohort of individuals with high-priority mental health needs. Here, we examine psychological (self-report), physiological (hair hormones) and genetic (polygenic scores) markers of sensitivity in a large cohort of 1591 Syrian refugee children across two waves of data. Child-caregiver dyads were recruited from informal tented settlements in Lebanon, and completed a battery of psychological instruments at baseline and follow-up (12 months apart). Univariate and multivariate Bayesian linear mixed models were used to examine a) the interrelationships between markers of sensitivity and b) the ability of sensitivity markers to predict anxiety, depression, post-traumatic stress disorder, and externalising behaviour. Self-reported sensitivity (using the Highly Sensitive Child Scale) significantly predicted a higher burden of all forms of mental illness across both waves, however, there were no significant cross-lagged pathways. Physiological and genetic markers were not stably predictive of self-reported sensitivity, and failed to similarly predict mental health outcomes. The measurement of environmental sensitivity may have significant implications for identifying and treating mental illness, especially amongst vulnerable populations, but clinical utility is currently limited to self-report assessment.

Abstract
PURPOSE To evaluate the relationship between vision-related quality of life and mental health in myopia children with various optical aids. METHODS This cross-sectional study enrolled children aged 8-13 years, exhibiting myopia ranging from -4.50 to -0.75 D, and utilizing various optical aids for correction. Full ocular examinations and completion of two questionnaires were performed. Vision-related quality of life was evaluated using the Paediatric Refractive Error Profile (PREP), and mental health status was assessed utilising the Screen for Child Anxiety Related Emotional Disorders (SCARED). Univariate and multivariate analyses were conducted to evaluate the association between vision-related quality of life and mental health status. RESULTS The study sample comprised 209 children with corrected myopia using single vision spectacles (100 [47.8 %]), soft contact lenses (66 [31.6 %]), and orthokeratology lenses (43 [20.6 %]). The mean age was 10.31 ± 1.65 y, and males accounted for 50.7 % of the sample. The distribution of demographic characteristics showed no significant difference among all correction types, except that the myopia duration was longer for orthokeratology lens wearers than those using spectacles (P=0.03). Contact lens showed clear benefits in almost all dimensions of vision-related quality of life, especially in appearance, satisfaction, activity and peer perceptions dimensions. The prevalence of anxiety disorders among spectacle wearers was 25.0 %, the highest among all groups. For myopia children with optical corrections, not being in the top 30 percent of their class rank, reporting lower PREP scores on symptoms, handling and peer perceptions dimensions were related with a higher prevalence of anxiety disorders. CONCLUSIONS Lower vision-related quality of life was associated with worse mental health status of myopia children with optical corrections. Identifying this association is crucial for protecting the mental health of myopia children and enhancing corrective measures.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Anxious depression is a prevalent subtype of depression associated with adverse outcomes such as higher depression severity and higher rates of suicidality. This study leveraged a state-wide research registry of depressed and/or suicidal youth to compare the prevalence, clinical correlates, and symptom patterns of those with versus without anxious depression. METHODS We included baseline data from 797 participants (ages 8-20) with a diagnosis of a depressive disorder. A score on the Generalized Anxiety Disorder Scale (GAD-7) ≥ 10 was used to define individuals with and without anxious depression. A structured battery was used to capture psychiatric diagnostic status, depression/anxiety severity, suicide risk, history of trauma, functioning, and resilience. RESULTS The prevalence of anxious depression among youth with depressive disorders was 59.5 % (n = 474). Youth with anxious depression had greater depression severity and anxiety symptoms, higher suicidality, and a higher prevalence of comorbid anxiety disorders than those without. Youth with anxious depression had greater impairment in functioning defined as worse pain interference, pain severity, fatigue, and social relationships compared to those without anxious depression. Youth with anxious depression also reported higher rates of depressive symptoms such as irritable mood, feelings of guilt, and psychomotor agitation compared to those without anxious depression. CONCLUSION Anxious depression is associated with worse depression severity, higher suicidality, and lower functioning. Longitudinal work is needed to examine long-term courses of anxious depression to explore its stability as a diagnostic subcategory.

Abstract
The Screen for Child Anxiety Related Emotional Disorders: Parent Version (SCARED-P) was originally developed for use in middle childhood and adolescence. The present study examined the psychometric properties and validity of the SCARED-P in an early childhood sample (predominantly aged 4-7 years). The 41-item version of the SCARED-P was administered to the parents of 233 children (mean age = 6.31 years, SD = 1.08; females = 34.3%). Confirmatory factor analysis provided mixed support for the original five-factor model of the SCARED-P. The SCARED-P demonstrated good to excellent internal consistency (total α = .94, subscale α = .68-.89), and good construct validity with the Child Behavior Checklist, Strengths and Difficulties Questionnaire, and the Developmental and Well-being Assessment. These findings indicate overall initial support for the SCARED-P's utility as a measure of anxiety in early childhood, but further psychometric and validation studies are needed in larger community-based samples of young children.

Abstract
The present study assessed the validity of one of the first autism-specific anxiety measures, the Anxiety Scale for Children with Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASC-ASD), and compared its ability to predict parent-reported clinical anxiety to a 'traditional' anxiety measure, the Spence Children's Anxiety Scale (SCAS). Whether the inclusion of the child form for each measure improved the predictive ability of the parent forms was also examined. Eighty-seven parents of autistic children, aged 8-12 years, completed the ASC-ASD, the SCAS, and the Social Communication Questionnaire (SCQ), a screener for autism characteristics. Of these parents, 56 had their child complete the ASC-ASD and SCAS. The children with a reported anxiety diagnosis were rated significantly higher by their parents on both the SCAS and the ASC-ASD compared to the non-anxious children. Pearson's correlation coefficients indicated that the ASC-ASD had good divergent and convergent validity, as demonstrated by a poor, non-significant correlation with the SCQ and a strong, significant correlation with the SCAS. Regression analyses indicated that while the ASC-ASD was a significant predictor of parent-reported clinical anxiety in autistic children, the SCAS was not. Neither model was improved with the inclusion of the respective child form. This study is the first to demonstrate the ability of the ASC-ASD to predict child clinical anxiety disorder status and adds to the growing body of evidence for the validity of this measure. The findings also suggest that parent reports of anxiety may be sufficient to identify autistic children warranting further clinical investigation of anxiety in this age group.

Abstract
BACKGROUND In recent years, the number of forcibly displaced persons has risen worldwide, with approximately 40% being children and adolescents. Most of them are hosted in low- and middle-income countries (LMICs). Many individuals meet the criteria for mental health issues, which can also be exacerbated by a number of risk factors, including low socioeconomic status, displacement, and stressors linked to conflicts in their country or region of origin. However, the vast majority never receive treatment for their psychological problems due to multiple reasons, including a shortage of mental health professionals in LIMCs, transportation challenges in accessing clinics, and clinic hours conflicting with family commitments. In the current study we investigated whether individual psychotherapy delivered by trained lay counsellors over telephone to Syrian refugee children living in Lebanon is effective and overcomes barriers to treatment access. METHODS After adaptation of Common Elements Treatment Approach (CETA) to remote delivery over telephone (t-CETA), preliminary effectiveness of the treatment modality was assessed with a pilot single blind randomised controlled trial including a total sample of 20 refugee children with diagnosed mental health problems. Data was analysed applying a Bayesian approach. RESULTS There was a significant session-by-session decrease in self-reported mental health symptoms over the course of treatment. Independent assessments showed that t-CETA resulted in a greater reduction of symptoms than standard in-person treatment as usual. There was no difference between groups for impairment. Importantly, the majority of children allocated to t-CETA completed treatment whilst no children in the treatment as usual condition were able to do so. CONCLUSION The study provides preliminary evidence that telephone-delivered psychotherapy in a humanitarian setting, delivered by lay counsellors under supervision, works and significantly increases access to treatment compared to traditional in-person treatment. Abstract
We aimed to explore the experiences, needs, and mental health impact of family members of healthcare workers (HCWs) before and during the COVID-19 pandemic. Eleven quantitative and nine qualitative studies were included in this review. Based on the narrative synthesis, we identified five outcomes: 'Mental health outcomes', 'Family relationships, 'Coping skills and resilience', 'Quality of life and social life', and 'Practical outcomes'. Our findings indicated that there was a high risk to the mental health and well-being of families of healthcare workers both before and during the pandemic. However, with the COVID-19 pandemic, some experiences and mental health issues of families were worsened. There was also a negative association between working long hours/shift work and family relationships/communication, family social life, and joint activities, and family members taking on more domestic responsibilities. Families tended to use both positive and negative coping strategies to deal with their loved one's job stress. Organisations and support services working with people in health care work should consider widening support to families where possible. With this understanding, HCWs and their families could be supported more effectively in clinical and organisational settings. Abstract
Background This study used data from the Norwegian Mother, Father, and Child Cohort Study (MoBa), and explored the psychological and social challenges of 14-year-olds who report psychotic symptoms. Research on help-seeking youths indicates comorbid symptoms of depression, anxiety, and social deterioration, but less is known about non-help-seeking individuals who may not use healthcare services, possibly skewing comorbidity profiles. Also, findings suggest that adolescents manifesting psychotic symptoms refrain from pursuing help. This gap underscores the necessity of studying non-help-seeking adolescents to better understand their needs and the risks they face without intervention. Methods We analyzed responses from adolescents who completed the 14-year questionnaire in MoBa (N = 127), identifying those as at risk by their high scores on psychosis-risk items, within the top 0.4% (N = 58). Comparative analyses were conducted against matched controls to assess differences in psychological and social functioning (N = 69). Results Results indicated that the at-risk adolescents experience significantly more depression and anxiety and have lower self-esteem and poorer social functioning than controls. Social functioning parameters, including leisure activities, social competence, quality of parental relationship, and sense of school belonging, were significantly worse than those observed in controls. The results indicate a pronounced vulnerability among non-help-seeking adolescents at-risk, similar to issues seen in help-seeking youths. Conclusion These findings highlight the importance of early identification and intervention strategies that reach beyond traditional clinical settings, suggesting the efficacy of population or community-based screenings to prevent long-term adverse outcomes. The study proposes a broader understanding of psychosis risk, stressing the importance of inclusive approaches to support at-risk adolescents effectively.

Abstract
Longitudinal research examining children's mental health (MH) over the course of the COVID-19 pandemic is scarce. We examined trajectories of depression and anxiety over two pandemic years among children with and without MH disorders. Parents and children 2-18 years completed surveys at seven timepoints (April 2020 to June 2022). Parents completed validated measures of depression and anxiety for children 8-18 years, and validated measures of emotional/behavioural symptoms for children 2-7 years old; children ≥10 years completed validated measures of depression and anxiety. Latent growth curve analysis determined depression and anxiety trajectories, accounting for demographics, child and parent MH. Data were available on 1315 unique children (1259 parent-reports; 550 child-reports). Trajectories were stable across the study period, however individual variation in trajectories was statistically significant. Of included covariates, only initial symptom level predicted symptom trajectories. Among participants with pre-COVID data, a significant increase in depression symptoms relative to pre-pandemic levels was observed; children and adolescents experienced elevated and sustained levels of depression and anxiety during the two-year period. Findings have direct policy implications in the prioritization and of maintenance of educational, recreational, and social activities with added MH supports in the face of future events.

Abstract
The literature on the role of parenting in the relation between child inhibited temperament and child anxiety is inconsistent, with some literature supporting a moderating role and some literature supporting alternative (e.g., mediating) roles. A systematic review of the evidence that parenting moderates the longitudinal relation between child inhibited temperament and child anxiety is needed. A systematic review of the literature was conducted in February and March of 2022 and repeated in January of 2024. Ten articles met criteria for inclusion, with 39 moderation analyses of interest among them. All included studies were conducted in Western contexts with predominately White, middle-class families. Thus, the current review can only be generalized to this population. Despite inconsistent findings, some evidence indicated that avoidance-promoting parenting behaviors such as overprotection and overinvolvement moderate the relation between child inhibited temperament and social anxiety symptoms, in particular. There was a lack of evidence that parenting behaviors moderate the relation between child inhibited temperament and anxiety disorders, and that affect-related parenting behaviors (e.g., negativity) moderate the relation between child inhibited temperament and non-social anxiety symptoms. There was mixed evidence regarding the moderating role of control-related parenting behaviors in the relation between child inhibited temperament and non-social anxiety symptoms, with some evidence that encouraging behaviors moderate this relation. Future research is needed to clarify these inconsistent and nuanced findings and investigate this moderation in non-Western, non-White, and low-income populations.

Abstract
Objective Emotion recognition, reactivity, and regulation are important in the development and maintenance of anxiety disorders. Whether and how these processes differentiate between different trajectories in anxiety remain unclear. The current study examined emotional processes as prospective predictors of anxiety symptom trajectories in psychiatrically hospitalized youth. Method Participants were 180 adolescents (M age = 14.89; SD = 1.35) from a psychiatric inpatient unit. At index hospitalization, participants completed a behavioral task assessing facial emotion recognition, and self-report measures of emotion dysregulation and reactivity. They completed a self-report measure on anxiety symptoms at baseline and 3, 6, 12, and 18 months post-discharge. Latent growth curve analysis was conducted to identify subgroups of individuals based upon their trajectory of anxiety symptoms across 18-months. ANOVAs were used to examine subgroup differences in emotional processing variables. Results Three distinct trajectories were identified, a stable moderate-to-high anxiety group, a group with moderate-to-high anxiety at baseline with symptom improvement over time, and a group characterized by relatively stable low-to-moderate anxiety throughout the study. The two initially moderate-to-high anxiety groups scored higher for emotion dysregulation and emotion reactivity at baseline compared to the low-to-moderate anxiety group. Emotion regulation difficulties relating to emotional non-acceptance were higher for the stable moderate-to-high anxiety group than for the moderate-to-high anxiety group that experience symptom improvement over time. Conclusions These findings may have clinical implications for discharge planning. Future studies should explore emotion regulation with a focus on non-acceptance of one's emotional experiences as a potential target of intervention in individuals with elevated anxiety.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Children with Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder (ADHD) demonstrate a heterogeneous sensorimotor, emotional, and cognitive profile. Comorbid sensorimotor imbalance, anxiety, and spatial disorientation are particularly prevalent among their non-core symptoms. Studies in other populations presented these three comorbid dysfunctions in the context of vestibular hypofunction. OBJECTIVE To test whether there is a subgroup of children with ADHD who have vestibular hypofunction presenting with concomitant imbalance, anxiety, and spatial disorientation. METHODS Children with ADHD-only (n = 28), ADHD + Developmental Coordination Disorder (ADHD + DCD; n = 38), and Typical Development (TD; n = 19) were evaluated for vestibular function by the Dynamic Visual Acuity test (DVA-t), balance by the Bruininks-Oseretsky Test of motor proficiency (BOT-2), panic anxiety by the Screen for Child Anxiety Related Emotional Disorders questionnaire-Child version (SCARED-C), and spatial navigation by the Triangular Completion test (TC-t). RESULTS Children with ADHD vs. TD presented with a high rate of vestibular hypofunction (65 vs. 0 %), imbalance (42 vs. 0 %), panic anxiety (27 vs. 11 %), and spatial disorientation (30 vs. 5 %). Children with ADHD + DCD contributed more frequent and severe vestibular hypofunction and imbalance than children with ADHD-only (74 vs. 54 %; 58 vs. 21 %, respectively). A concomitant presence of imbalance, anxiety, and spatial disorientation was observed in 33 % of children with ADHD, all sharing vestibular hypofunction. CONCLUSIONS Vestibular hypofunction may be the common pathophysiology of imbalance, anxiety, and spatial disorientation in children. These comorbidities are preferentially present in children with ADHD + DCD rather than ADHD-only, thus likely related to DCD rather than to ADHD disorder. Children with this profile may benefit from a vestibular rehabilitation intervention.

Abstract
Anxiety disorders are found to be the most prevalent psychological problems among children and adolescents. Cognitive behaviour therapy (CBT) was found to be effective at reducing anxiety. The purpose of this study was to assess the effectiveness of a universal school-based intervention for reducing anxiety among Grade 9 schoolchildren. A randomized controlled cluster trial was conducted by randomly assigning 36 schools in the Colombo district in Sri Lanka into study and control arms, each comprising 18 schools with 360 students. The levels of anxiety, self-esteem and depression status were assessed using the validated Screen for Child Anxiety Related Disorders (SCARED) tool and the Rosenberg self-esteem scale, respectively, and the Depression, Anxiety and Stress Scale 21 (DASS-21) at baseline, after intervention, and after 3 months. A CBT-based universal intervention package was administered weekly by a trained teacher for eight weeks with a one-month self-practice period to a randomly selected Grade 9 class in each school in the study arm. The control arm received routine care. Anxiety and self-esteem scores and depression status were compared between the two arms after the intervention and at 3 months of follow-up using the generalized estimation equation (GEE), controlling for confounding and clustering. The nonresponse and loss to follow-up rates were < 1%. When comparing the study arm with the control arm using GEE, anxiety levels were significantly lower [β = (-0.096), 95% CI = (-0.005) - (-0.186), p = 0.038] at follow-up but not postintervention [β = (-0.024), 95% CI = 0.006 - (-0.055), p = 0.115]. There were no significant differences in depression status after intervention (OR = 0.257, 95% CI =0.052-1.286; p = 0.098) or follow-up (OR = 0.422, 95% CI 0.177-1.008; p = 0.052), and self-esteem significantly increased after intervention (β = 0.811, 95% CI = 0.314-1.309; p = 0.001) but not at follow-up [β=0.435, 95% CI=(-0.276)-1.145, p=0.231]. This study revealed that the universal package based on CBT is effective at reducing anxiety and improving self-esteem among adolescents. The trial registration number and date were SLCTR/2018/018 and 19th of June 2018 respectively.

Abstract
Body-focused repetitive disorders (BFRBDs) are understudied in youth and understanding of their underlying mechanisms is limited. This study evaluated BFRBD clinical characteristics, and two factors commonly implicated in their maintenance - emotion regulation and impulsivity - in 53 youth aged 11 to 17 years: 33 with BFRBDs and 20 controls. Evaluators administered psychiatric diagnostic interviews. Participants rated BFRBD severity, negative affect, quality of life, family functioning, emotion regulation, distress tolerance, and impulsivity. Youth with BFRBDs showed poorer distress tolerance and quality of life, and higher impulsivity and negative affect than controls, with no differences in family impairment. BFRBD distress/impairment, but not BFRBD severity, correlated with anxiety and depression, and poorer distress tolerance. Findings suggest youth with BFRBDs show clinical patterns aligning with prior research; highlight the role of distress tolerance in child BFRBDs; and suggest the utility of acceptance and mindfulness-based therapies for unpleasant emotions in BFRBDs. Continued research should evaluate factors underlying BFRBDs in youth.

Abstract
Adolescence is a critical developmental period of biological and social change during which 1 in 3 youth experience significant anxiety symptoms. The social-emotional lives of the majority of adolescents are largely conducted via digital media use (DMU; e.g., social media, text messaging). Yet the past decade of research on DMU and anxiety has yielded mixed results (e.g., Keles et al., 2020 review), leaving the complex role that DMU might play in the emergence and maintenance of anxiety poorly understood. A key step forward is to leverage psychophysiology to identify individual differences in cognitive and emotional processes that confer vulnerability to potential negative effects of DMU. Further, given the ubiquity of DMU, a greater focus is needed on measurements that move beyond sheer frequency to capture DMU in comparison to face-to-face (FTF) social interactions. This study examined attention bias (AB), characterized by selective and exaggerated attention toward or away from threat, as a moderator of the link between DMU and anxiety in adolescents (N = 75; 42 female) aged 12-14 years (M = 13.28, SD = 0.87). AB was indexed during a dot probe task using reaction time metrics (i.e., trial-level bias) and via ERPs capturing attentional selection and discrimination (N170) and cognitive control (N2) to threat compared to neutral faces. AB moderated associations between DMU and anxiety. A greater preference to use DMU vs FTF predicted greater anxiety among those with a greater behavioral bias away from threat, blunted N170, and blunted N2 in the presence of threat. Future research should examine potential causal and bidirectional links between DMU and anxiety and explore whether preferences for technology-mediated interactions and individual differences in threat processing increase risk.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Preterm birth and multiple gestation are independently associated with adverse neurodevelopmental outcomes. The objective of this study was to describe risks of screening positive for attention-deficit/hyperactivity disorder (ADHD), autism spectrum disorder (ASD), and anxiety in preterm-born twin children by zygosity (monozygotic, dizygotic) and birth order (first-born, second-born). METHODS Caregivers of 349 preterm-born twin pairs (42% monozygotic) aged 3-18 years reported child behavioral outcomes on Strengths and Weaknesses of ADHD Symptoms and Normal Behavior; Social Responsiveness Scale, Second Edition; and Preschool Anxiety Scale or Screen for Child Anxiety and Related Emotional Disorders. RESULTS Concordance for behavioral outcomes in twin pairs ranged from 80.06 to 89.31% for ADHD, 61.01 to 84.23% for ASD, and 64.76 to 73.35% for anxiety. Monozygotic twins had a greater risk than dizygotic of screening positive for inattention (risk ratio = 2.91, 95% CI = 1.48-5.72) and social anxiety (1.79, 1.23-2.61). Relative to first-born, second-born twins had a greater risk of screening positive for hyperactivity/impulsivity (1.51, 1.06-2.16); overall ASD (2.38, 1.62-3.49); difficulties with social awareness (2.68, 1.94-3.71), social cognition (4.45, 3.06-6.46), and social communication (2.36, 1.56-3.57); restricted/repetitive behavior (1.91, 1.30-2.81); overall anxiety (1.34, 1.10-1.64); generalized anxiety (1.34, 1.11-1.60); and social anxiety (1.32, 1.06-1.64). CONCLUSION The current findings emphasize considering zygosity and birth order in preterm and multiple birth outcomes research, and highlight clinical implications for discharge planning, neurodevelopmental surveillance, and facilitating parenting and family support. IMPACT Zygosity and birth order are important determinants of behavioral and socioemotional outcomes in preterm-born twins. Among 349 preterm-born twin pairs aged 3-18 years (42% monozygotic), 61-89% demonstrated concordance for behavioral and socioemotional outcomes. Monozygosity had greater risks than dizygosity for positive screening of inattention and social anxiety. Second-born twins had greater risks than first-born for hyperactivity/impulsivity, social difficulties (awareness, cognition, communication), restricted/repetitive behavior, and anxiety (generalized, social). These findings have implications for discharge planning, neurodevelopmental surveillance, and facilitating parenting and family support.

Abstract
In recent years, in addition to its clinical importance, interest in the social-cognitive aspect of internet gaming disorder (IGD) has increased. This study aimed to investigate autistic traits, executive functions, and self-regulation abilities of patients with IGD. Eighty-seven male patients with IGD and eighty-three male healthy controls (HC) were included in the study. All patients were diagnosed with IGD as per the diagnostic criteria of Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders-5. Healthy controls without any comorbid psychiatric diagnosis were recruited from the community. The Brief Rating Inventory of Executive Function (BRIEF) and the Social Responsiveness Scale (SRS) were implemented to evaluate autistic traits, executive functions, and self-regulation skills. The Beck Depression Inventory (BDI), Screen for Child Anxiety and Related Disorders and Internet Gaming Disorder Scale-Short-Form were used to evaluate psychopathology. The effect size of the impairments in executive functions and self-regulation skills was large (Cohen's d = 1.0-2.0). IGD groups had higher levels of autistic traits compared to healthy controls (d = 1.0-1.4). The differences in BDI and BRIEF scores remained significant in logistic regression analysis. Age at illness-onset, total severity of anxiety, and autistic traits were found as significant correlates of deficits in executive functions among patients with IGD. The results of this study supported the higher autistic traits and poorer executive function skills of patients with IGD. Deficits in executive functions were associated with autistic traits and younger age-onset of the illness.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Major theories link threat learning processes to anxiety symptoms, which typically emerge during adolescence. While this developmental stage is marked by substantial maturation of the neural circuity involved in threat learning, research directly examining adolescence-specific patterns of neural responding during threat learning is scarce. This study compared adolescents and adults in acquisition and extinction of conditioned threat responses assessed at the cognitive, psychophysiological, and neural levels, focusing on the late positive potential (LPP), an event-related potential (ERP) component indexing emotional valence. METHOD Sixty-five adults and 63 adolescents completed threat acquisition and extinction, 24 h apart, using the bell conditioning paradigm. Self-reported fear, skin conductance responses (SCR), and ERPs were measured. RESULTS Developmental differences emerged in neural and psychophysiological responses during threat acquisition, with adolescents displaying heightened LPP responses to threat and safety cues as well as heightened threat-specific SCR compared to adults. During extinction, SCR suggested comparable reduction in conditioned threat responses across groups, while LPP revealed incomplete extinction only among adolescents. Finally, age moderated the link between anxiety severity and LPP-assessed extinction, whereby greater anxiety severity was associated with reduced extinction among younger participants. CONCLUSIONS In line with developmental theories, adolescence is characterized by a specific age-related difficulty adapting to diminishing emotional significance of prior threats, contributing to heightened vulnerability to anxiety symptoms. Further, LPP appears to be sensitive to developmental differences in threat learning and may thus potentially serve as a useful biomarker in research on adolescents, threat learning, and anxiety.

Abstract
Gut microbial metabolites have been theorized to play a causative role in the pathophysiology of autism spectrum disorder (ASD). This hypothesis is based on results from mechanistic preclinical studies and several correlational studies showing differences in gut microbial composition between ASD subjects and neurotypical (NT) controls. However, alterations in how the human brain interacts with the gut microbiome in ASD have not been examined. In this cross-sectional, case-control observational study, fecal metabolomics, task-based functional magnetic resonance imaging (fMRI), and behavioral assessments were obtained from 43 ASD and 41 NT children aged 8-17. The fMRI tasks were based on socio-emotional and sensory paradigms that commonly show strong evoked brain differences in ASD participants. General linear models and mediational modeling were applied to examine the links between tryptophan metabolism and evoked brain activity and behavior. Results indicated that fecal levels of specific tryptophan-related metabolites were associated with: 1) brain activity atypicalities in regions previously implicated in ASD (i.e., insula and cingulate); and 2) ASD severity and symptomatology (i.e., ADOS scores, disgust propensity, and sensory sensitivities). Importantly, activity in the mid-insula and mid-cingulate significantly mediated relationships between the microbial tryptophan metabolites, indolelactate and tryptophan betaine, and ASD severity and disgust sensitivity. To our knowledge, this is the first study to elucidate how interactions between gut metabolites and brain activity may impact autism symptomatology, particularly in functional brain pathways associated with vagal and interoceptive/emotion processing.

Abstract
Background: The literature supports the benefits of medical cannabis for core and comorbid symptoms in autistic individuals and anxiety-related symptoms in individuals without autism. However, no study has specifically investigated how cannabidiol (CBD)-rich cannabis affects anxiety subtypes in autistic children or its relationship with restricted and repetitive behaviors and interests (RRBI). Understanding the effects of CBD-rich cannabis treatment on anxiety subtypes and RRBI could offer more precise treatment approaches to managing anxiety symptoms and reducing RRBI frequency in autistic children. Objectives: To examine (1) the impact of CBD-rich cannabis treatment on autistic children's (1a) anxiety levels and subtypes and (1 b) RRBI and subtypes and (2) whether changes in anxiety explain changes in RRBI following cannabis treatment. Method: In this open-label study, we analyzed data from 65 autistic children (5-12 years) who had participated in research on the effects of CBD-rich cannabis on children with autism. Their parents completed the Repetitive Behavior Scale-revised to assess the frequency and severity of six subgroups of their children's recurrent behaviors and the Screen for Child Anxiety-Related Emotional Disorders for symptoms related to five types of anxiety disorders. They completed these assessments at three time points: (T1) before treatment, (T2) after 3 months, and (T3) after 6 months of treatment. Results: The results indicated reduced RRBI and symptoms related to various anxiety subtypes in autistic children following 6 months of CBD-rich cannabis treatment. Specifically, we observed significant differences in the autistic children's overall anxiety and in some anxiety subtypes (i.e., general, social, panic, and separation anxieties). Significant improvements were observed in RRBI, including the total score, and specifically in compulsive, ritualistic, and sameness behaviors. Our findings revealed that reduced anxiety, particularly within the panic- and separation-related subtypes, predicted a subsequent decrease in RRBI, specifically sameness behaviors, following cannabis treatment. Conclusions: The findings of the cannabis treatment's potential benefits for alleviating anxiety symptoms, leading to reduced RRBI, may provide evidence for the meaningful relationship between these variables and for the potential benefits of cannabis treatment for autistic children. We strongly recommend further double-blind, placebo-controlled studies using standardized assessments to validate these findings.

Abstract
Objectives Depression is a major contributor of young people's burden of disease. In this study we aim to estimate the effect of elevated depressive symptoms on physical health-related quality of life. Design We used self-reported information from the prospective BELLA cohort study, which included adolescents selected from the general population in Germany. The baseline assessment (2003-2006) and the 1-, 2-, and 6-year follow-up waves provide the data basis. Participants The baseline study population consisted of 1,460 adolescents between the ages of 12 and 17 who, according to their caregivers, did not suffer from depression. Variables The primary outcome, as measured by the physical component score (PCS) of the SF-36 at a 6-year follow-up (range: 0-100), is physical health-related quality of life. The exposure of interest is depressive symptoms, as measured by the Center for Epidemiological Studies Depression Scale for Children (CES-DC) at baseline, 1-year follow-up and 2-year follow-ups (range: 0-60). We dichotomized the exposure into subthreshold (≤15) and elevated depressive symptoms (>15). For the main analyses we considered a cumulative index for elevated depressive symptoms across the three time points (range: 0-3). Considered confounders are sex, age, socioeconomic status, migrant background, social support, anxiety symptoms, physical activity, chronic diseases, and sleeping problems. Statistical methods We used multiple imputation to account for missing values. Within each imputed dataset, we applied inverse probability weighting (IPW) to estimate the effect of the cumulative index for elevated depressive symptoms at baseline, 1- and 2-year follow-up on physical health-related quality of life at 6-year follow-up. We derived 95% confidence intervals by bootstrapping. Results After adjusting with IPW, the effect of the cumulative index per one unit increase of elevated depressive symptoms on the physical component score was -1.71 (95% CI: -3.51 to -0.04). The adjusted effect estimates of single exposure of elevated depressive symptoms on physical health-related quality of life were -0.83 (95% CI: -3.69 to 1.87) at baseline, -2.96 (95% CI: -4.94 to -0.52) at 1-year follow-up and -1.32 (95% CI: -3.85 to 1.15) at 2-year follow-up. Conclusion Findings suggest that elevated depressive symptoms during adolescence decrease physical health-related quality of life in young adulthood.

Abstract
INTRODUCTION The rapid proliferation of technology and its impact on adolescents' lives have raised concerns about addictive behaviors and its potential consequences, including behavioral and mental health problems. This study investigates the prevalence and risk factors associated with the co-occurrence of Problematic Facebook Use and Problematic Video game Use among Tunisian adolescents. METHODOLOGY We conducted a cross-sectional study in the urban area of Sousse governorate in Tunisia during the 2018/2019 school year. We selected a representative sample of high school students enrolled in public educational institutions in Sousse. Data collection was performed through a self-administered structured questionnaire, which gathered information on sociodemographic characteristics, lifestyle behaviors, and mental health disorders. Problematic Facebook Use was assessed using the validated Arabic version of the Bergen Scale, while Problematic Video Game Use was measured using the 21-point Lemmens Scale, which was translated into Arabic. Statistical analysis was carried out using the SPSS program (version 20). RESULTS We enrolled a total of 1342 high school students in our study, of whom, 63.2% were female with a mean age of 17.5 ± 1.44 years. The prevalence of Problematic Facebook Use and Problematic Video Game Use was 28.3% and 13% respectively. Regarding the co-occurrence of the two problematic behaviors, 31.3% of participants faced a singular addictive behavior, either related to problematic Facebook or video game use, while 5% had both addictive behaviors simultaneously. In a multivariate analysis, risk factors for the co-occurrence of Problematic Facebook and Video Game Use, in decreasing order of significance, included severe depression (AOR = 4.527; p = 0.003), anxiety (AOR = 4.216; p = 0.001), male gender (AOR = 4.130; p < 0.001), problematic internet use (AOR = 3.477; p = 0.006), as well as moderate depression (AOR = 3.048; p = 0.007). CONCLUSION Our study found that Problematic Facebook and Video Game Use were prevalent among Tunisian adolescents. The co-occurrence of these disorders is strongly linked to male gender, problematic internet use, depression, and anxiety disorders. These findings underscore the urgency of implementing tailored and effective awareness and prevention programs to address these emerging challenges.

Abstract
INTRODUCTION It is crucial to identify and evaluate feasible, proactive ways to reach teens with eating disorders (EDs) who may not otherwise have access to screening or treatment. This study aimed to explore the feasibility of recruiting teens with EDs to a digital intervention study via social media and a publicly available online ED screen, and to compare the characteristics of teens recruited by each approach in an exploratory fashion. METHOD Teens aged 14-17 years old who screened positive for a clinical/subclinical ED or at risk for an ED and who were not currently in ED treatment completed a baseline survey to assess current ED symptoms, mental health comorbidities, and barriers to treatment. Bivariate analyses were conducted to examine differences between participants recruited via social media and those recruited after completion of a widely available online EDs screen (i.e., National Eating Disorders Association [NEDA] screen). RESULTS Recruitment of teens with EDs using the two online approaches was found to be feasible, with 934 screens completed and a total of 134 teens enrolled over 6 months: 77% (n = 103) via social media 23% (n = 31) via the NEDA screen. Mean age of participants (N = 134) was 16 years old, with 49% (n = 66) identifying as non-White, and 70% (n = 94) identifying as a gender and/or sexual minority. Teens from NEDA reported higher ED psychopathology scores (medium effect size) and more frequent self-induced vomiting and driven exercise (small effect sizes). Teens from NEDA also endorsed more barriers to treatment, including not feeling ready for treatment and not knowing where to find a counselor or other resources (small effect sizes). DISCUSSION Online recruitment approaches in this study reached a large number of teens with an interest in a digital intervention to support ED recovery, demonstrating the feasibility of these outreach methods. Both approaches reached teens with similar demographic characteristics; however, teens recruited from NEDA reported higher ED symptom severity and barriers to treatment. Findings suggest that proactive assessment and intervention methods should be developed and tailored to meet the needs of each of these groups. PUBLIC SIGNIFICANCE This study examined the feasibility of recruiting teens with EDs to a digital intervention research study via social media and NEDA's online screen, and demonstrated differences in ED symptoms among participants by recruitment approach.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Sexuality and gender minoritised (SGM) adolescents are at increased risk of self-injury and suicide, and experience barriers to accessing mental health support. Dialectical behaviour therapy (DBT) is an effective treatment for self-injury and emotion dysregulation in adolescent populations, but few studies have published outcomes of DBT for SGM young people. AIMS This study aimed to investigate treatment outcomes and completion for SGM adolescents and their cisgender and heterosexual peers, in the National & Specialist CAMHS, DBT service (UK). METHOD Treatment completion, and opting out before and during treatment were examined for sexual and gender identity groups, as well as changes by the end of treatment in emotion dysregulation, self-injury, in-patient bed-days, emergency department attendances, and borderline personality disorder, depression and anxiety symptoms. RESULTS SGM adolescents were over-represented in this service, even after considering their increased risk for self-injury. No statistically significant differences were found for treatment completion between the sexual orientation and gender identity groups, although there were patterns indicating possible lower treatment uptake and completion that warrant further investigation. Clinical outcomes for treatment-completers showed improvement by the end of DBT for each group, with few exceptions. DISCUSSION These results are from relatively small subsamples, and it was not possible to separate by sex assigned at birth. Findings should be treated tentatively and as early indications of effect sizes to inform future studies. This study suggests that DBT could be a useful treatment for SGM adolescents in a highly specialist treatment setting.

Abstract
Aggressive adolescents tend to exhibit abnormal fear acquisition and extinction, and reactive aggressive adolescents are often more anxious. However, the relationship between fear generalization and reactive aggression (RA) remains unknown. According to Reactive-Proactive Aggression Questionnaire (RPQ) scores, 61 adolescents were divided into two groups, namely, a high RA group (N = 30) and a low aggression (LA) group (N = 31). All participants underwent three consecutive phases of the Pavlovian conditioning paradigm (i.e., habituation, acquisition, and generalization), and neural activation of the medial prefrontal cortex (mPFC) was assessed by functional near-infrared spectroscopy (fNIRS). The stimuli were ten circles with varying sizes, including two conditioned stimuli (CSs) and eight generalization stimuli (GSs). A scream at 85 dB served as the auditory unconditioned stimulus (US). The US expectancy ratings of both CSs and GSs were higher in the RA group than in the LA group. The fNIRS results showed that CSs and GSs evoked lower mPFC activation in the RA group compared to the LA group during fear generalization. These findings suggest that abnormalities in fear acquisition and generalization are prototypical dysregulations in adolescents with RA. They provide neurocognitive evidence for dysregulated fear learning in the mechanisms underlying adolescents with RA, highlighting the need to develop emotional regulation interventions for these individuals.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Depressive and anxiety symptoms are common in childhood-onset systemic lupus erythematosus (cSLE), yet their etiology and course remain unclear. We investigated the frequency of depressive and anxiety symptoms longitudinally in youth with cSLE, and associated socio-demographic and disease factors. METHODS Participants 8-18 years with cSLE completed baseline measures [demographic questionnaire, Center for Epidemiologic Studies Depression Scale for Children (CES-DC), Screen for Childhood Anxiety Related Disorders (SCARED), and psychiatric interview] and follow-up measures (CES-DC and SCARED) > 6 months later. Prevalence of clinically significant depressive (score >15 on CES-DC) or anxiety symptoms (score ≥25 on SCARED) was calculated at baseline and follow-up. Baseline psychiatric interview diagnoses were tabulated. Relationships between socio-demographics (neighborhood-level material deprivation, ethnic concentration, adverse childhood event history, psychiatric condition in a first-degree relative), disease-related factors (disease duration, major organ disease, disease activity, glucocorticoid use, comorbid medical condition) and baseline depressive and anxiety scores, were examined in linear regression models. Factors with univariate associations with p < 0.2 were included in multivariable adjusted models. RESULTS At baseline, of 51 participants with a mean disease duration of 4.3 years (SD 2.7), 35% (n = 18) and 35% (n = 18) had clinically significant depressive and anxiety symptoms, respectively. Anxiety disorder was diagnosed by psychiatric interview in 14% (n = 7), depressive disorders in 6% (n = 3), and post-traumatic stress disorder in 4% (n = 2). Adverse childhood events and first-degree relative with psychiatric condition were present in 40% (n = 20) and 37% (n = 18), respectively. In multivariable regression analysis, baseline depressive symptoms were positively correlated with neighbourhood-level material deprivation (β = 4.2, 95% CI [1.0, 7.3], p = 0.01) and psychiatric condition in a first-degree relative (β = 7.3, 95% CI [2.2, 12.4], p = 0.006). No associations were found between baseline anxiety scores and patient factors. At a median follow-up of 13.5 months (IQR 10.5, 18) for CES-DC (n = 34) and SCARED (n = 44), depressive and anxiety symptoms were persistent (18%, n = 6; 16%, n = 7), and newly present (24%, n = 8; 16% n = 7) at follow-up. CONCLUSION In this sample, depressive and anxiety symptoms were prevalent and persistent. Depressive symptoms correlated with neighborhood-level material deprivation, and family psychiatric history. These findings support routine psychosocial assessment in cSLE, and provision of appropriate resources.

Abstract
OBJECTIVE Anxiety is among the major psychological concerns for children living with food allergy (FA). Yet research exploring the variables driving anxiety symptoms in FA remains sparse, and most studies still utilize homogeneous samples to assess anxiety symptoms. The current study seeks to evaluate the rates of clinically significant anxiety symptoms among a diverse sample of youth with FA and examine whether a heightened risk perception of FA outcomes and FA burden (vs. FA medical history) is associated with anxiety in youth. METHODS 94 youth ages 10-14 and their parents were recruited from FA clinics at a mid-Atlantic children's hospital. Both youth and parents completed demographic and FA medical history questionnaires, the Screen for Child Anxiety Related Emotional Disorders, and the Food Allergy Independent Measure as part of a longitudinal study about FA adjustment and adherence. RESULTS Over a third (37%) of youth scored above clinical cut-offs for overall anxiety symptoms. At least 25% of youth reported clinically significant scores on panic disorder, generalized anxiety, social anxiety, separation anxiety, and school avoidance subscales. Perception of risk of adverse FA outcomes and burden-but not FA medical history-were associated with total anxiety, generalized anxiety, panic disorder, and school avoidance symptoms, but not social anxiety and separation anxiety. Having more FAs was associated with higher social anxiety scores but not with other anxiety subscales. CONCLUSIONS Youth with FA might benefit from psychosocial interventions that address FA risk perception management and promote appropriate FA vigilance to cope with anxiety symptoms.

Abstract
Elevated threat appraisal is a postulated neurodevelopmental mechanism of anxiety disorders. However, laboratory-assessed threat appraisals are task-specific and subject to measurement error. We utilized latent variable analysis to integrate youth's self-reported threat appraisals across different experimental tasks; we next examined associations with pediatric anxiety as well as behavioral and psychophysiological task indices. Ninety-two youth ages 8-17 years (M age=13.07, 65% female), including 51 with a primary anxiety disorder and 41 with no Axis I diagnosis, completed up to eight threat-exposure tasks. Anxiety symptoms were assessed using questionnaires and ecological momentary assessment. Appraisals both prior to and following threat exposures evidenced shared variance across tasks. Derived factor scores for threat appraisal were associated significantly with anxiety symptoms and variably with task indices; findings were comparable to task-specific measures and had several advantages. Results support an overarching construct of threat appraisal linked with pediatric anxiety, providing groundwork for more robust laboratory-based measurement.

Abstract
Introduction Across various cultural contexts, success in goal realization relates to individuals' well-being. Moreover, commitment to and successful pursuance of goals are crucial when searching for a meaningful identity in adolescence. However, individuals' goals differ in how much they match their implicit motive dispositions. We hypothesized that successful pursuance of affiliation goals positively relates to commitment-related dimensions of interpersonal identity development (domain: close friends) that, in turn, predict adolescents' level of well-being. However, we further assumed that the links between goal success and identity commitment are particularly pronounced among adolescents who are characterized by a high implicit affiliation motive. Methods To scrutinize the generalizability of the assumed relationships, data were assessed among adolescents in individualistic (Germany) and collectivistic (Zambia) cultural contexts. Results Regardless of adolescents' cultural background, we found that commitment-related dimensions of interpersonal identity development mediate the link between successful attainment of affiliation goals and well-being, particularly among adolescents with a pronounced implicit affiliation motive; that is, the strength of the implicit affiliation motive moderates the association between goal success and identity commitment. Conclusion We discuss findings concerning universal effects of implicit motives on identity commitment and well-being.

Abstract
PURPOSE PEERS® for Adolescents is an evidence-based social skills training program developed for individuals with autism spectrum disorder (ASD), which is now widely implemented by community providers in clinics and schools. However, majority of past efficacy studies on PEERS® were conducted in controlled research settings, with limited information about its effectiveness when delivered in the community. We sought to examine the effects of PEERS® on social functioning and mental health outcomes when delivered in an outpatient autism specialty clinic. METHODS Clinical data from 45 adolescents with social challenges (age range: 11-18 years old; 31.1% female assigned at birth) were extracted for secondary analyses. Paired t-tests were performed to examine the pre- to post-intervention changes in social and mental health outcomes. Correlations between pre- and post-change scores of outcome measures were examined. RESULTS Self-reported social skills knowledge, caregiver-reported social skills (measured by the Social Skills Improvement Systems) and the number of get-togethers hosted, increased significantly from pre- to post-intervention. Additionally, caregiver-reported anxiety and self-reported loneliness significantly decreased from pre- to post-intervention. Exploratory analyses showed that increases in caregiver-reported social skills were associated with decreases in self-reported loneliness. CONCLUSIONS Our findings provide evidence supporting the efficacy of PEERS® for improving social knowledge and skills of adolescents with social challenges when delivered in the community. The current study also showed the potential benefit of PEERS® for improving adolescent mental health.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Videoconferencing is considered an alternative to face-to-face consultations and a possibility to help overcome access-to-care barriers in mental health care services. Barriers to child and adolescent mental health services are particularly apparent in the case of children and adolescents receiving child welfare services. This scoping review aims to provide an overview of research on videoconferencing in the mental health treatment of children and adolescents receiving support from child welfare services. METHODS This scoping review follows the review framework outlined by the Joanna Briggs Institute. The following databases were searched from January 2012 to April 2024: Scopus, Web of Science, PubMed, PsycINFO (Ovid), CINAHL Plus, Social Services Abstracts (ProQuest), Sociological Abstracts (ProQuest), and Google Scholar. RESULTS The search yielded 4322 unique records and resulted in the inclusion of 22 articles that met the inclusion criteria. The studies originated from Denmark, England, Australia, Norway, Canada, Chile, and the USA, and were grouped into four areas: (1) videoconferencing to increase access to mental health treatment for vulnerable groups (2) young people's perspectives (3) videoconferencing in interdisciplinary collaborative meetings, and (4) use, awareness, and acceptance of videoconferencing among health and social care providers. CONCLUSIONS This scoping review shows that if videoconferencing in mental health care is to become an established and trusted method aimed at children and adolescents receiving child welfare services, several unresolved and potentially negative issues need attention and more research. This particularly applies to whether videoconferencing decreases or exacerbates inequalities in access to mental health services. A further question is whether new barriers are raised by screen-based treatment to threaten good therapeutic relationships, and by extension treatment quality and clinical outcomes.

Abstract
The Youth Anxiety Measure for DSM-5 (YAM-5) is a self- and parent-report scale specifically developed to assess symptoms of major anxiety disorders (part 1 or YAM-5-I) and specific phobias/agoraphobia (part 2 or YAM-5-II) in children and adolescents in terms of the contemporary psychiatric classification system. Since its introduction, the measure has been increasingly used in research, making it feasible to provide a summary of its psychometric properties. The present article presents a systematic review of 20 studies that employed the YAM-5, involving 5325 young participants. Overall, the results supported the hypothesized factor structure of both parts of the measure, although there were also some studies that could not fully replicate the original five-factor model of YAM-5-I. The internal consistency of the YAM-5 was generally high for the total scores of both parts, while reliability coefficients for the subscales were more variable across studies. Research also obtained evidence for other psychometric properties, such as test-retest reliability, parent-child agreement, convergent/divergent validity, and discriminant validity. Results further revealed that girls tend to show significantly higher anxiety levels on the YAM-5 than boys. Overall, these findings indicate that the YAM-5 is a promising tool for assessing symptoms of anxiety disorders including specific phobias in young people. Some directions for future research with the YAM-5 and recommendations regarding the use of the measure are given.

Abstract
Eye contact improves mood, facilitates connectedness, and is assumed to strengthen the parent-child bond. Adolescent depression is linked to difficulties in social interactions, the parent-child bond included. Our goal was to elucidate adolescents' affective and neural responses to prolonged eye contact with one's parent in nondepressed adolescents (HC) and how these responses are affected in depressed adolescents. While in the scanner, 59 nondepressed and 19 depressed adolescents were asked to make eye contact with their parent, an unfamiliar peer, an unfamiliar adult, and themselves by using videos of prolonged direct and averted gaze, as an approximation of eye contact. After each trial, adolescents reported on their mood and feelings of connectedness, and eye movements and BOLD-responses were assessed. In HCs, eye contact boosted mood and feelings of connectedness and increased activity in inferior frontal gyrus (IFG), temporal pole, and superior frontal gyrus. Unlike HCs, eye contact did not boost the mood of depressed adolescents. While HCs reported increased mood and feelings of connectedness to the sight of their parent versus others, depressed adolescents did not. Depressed adolescents exhibited blunted overall IFG activity. These findings show that adolescents are particularly sensitive to eye contact and respond strongly to the sight of their parents. This sensitivity seems to be blunted in depressed adolescents. For clinical purposes, it is important to gain a better understanding of how the responsivity to eye contact in general and with their parents in particular, can be restored in adolescents with depression.

Abstract
Attention training is an evidence-based, computerized treatment for anxiety and its disorders rooted in cognitive neuroscience. Though experimental research and clinical trials data on attention training in children span two decades, the literature has focused on attention training's anxiety reduction effects, with little guidance on its implementation in clinical practice. Guidance on implementation is needed given recent efforts to increase accessibility of attention training in clinical practice settings. In this article, we move from research to clinical implementation, providing guidelines with pragmatic clinical steps. We include guidance on psychoeducation, setting and delivery of sessions, potential challenges, and frequently asked questions regarding implementation.

Abstract
BACKGROUND In this systematic review, we aimed to synthesise existing research on the phenomenology of mental imagery among high worriers compared to healthy individuals, and to characterise the nature and effectiveness of existing imagery-related interventions in treatment of worry. METHODS PsycInfo, CENTRAL, EMBASE, Medline, Medline Epub, and PubMed were searched for studies examining the relationship between worry/GAD and mental imagery, or interventions using imagery in treatment of worry/GAD. We assessed study quality and used qualitative narrative synthesis to comprehensively map study results. RESULTS The search yielded 2589 abstracts that were assessed for eligibility independently by two authors. From this, 183 full texts were screened and 50 qualitatively synthesised. Twenty-seven reported an association between worry/GAD and an aspect of mental imagery. Here, overactive negative and worry imagery, and diminished positive future imagining, were associated with worry/GAD. Twenty-three studies reported an intervention. This literature suggested mixed findings regarding efficacy, including for imaginal exposure as an independent technique for GAD. CONCLUSIONS Findings support dysfunctional negative imagining and diminished positive prospective imagery in GAD. General imagining abilities remain intact, which is promising for efforts to utilise imagery in treatment. Further research is warranted to develop innovative clinical applications of imagery in treatment of GAD.

Abstract
This study aimed to identify group variations in adolescent impulsivity and explore the connections between latent categories of impulsivity and psychological symptoms, social anxiety, and internet addiction. The research involved 2,378 participants from three middle schools in Guangdong Province, China. We assessed the impact of impulsivity levels (measured by BBIS) on depression (measured by KADS-11), anxiety (measured by SCARED), social anxiety (measured by SASC), and internet addiction (measured by YDQ). Latent profile analysis was employed to examine the diversity in adolescent impulsivity, establish latent classifications, and investigate the variances in psychological symptoms, social anxiety, and internet addiction. The middle school students were categorized into five latent groups based on their BBIS scores. Statistical analysis revealed five impulsivity categories, strongly linked to psychological symptoms and social anxiety but less strongly associated with internet addiction. The high impulsivity group (C5) exhibited higher scores in psychological symptoms and social anxiety compared to other groups, whereas the poor self-regulation group (C3) displayed greater psychological symptoms, social anxiety scores, and internet addiction than the impulsive behavior group (C4). Future investigations should investigate the underlying factors contributing to the observed differences among these groups.

Abstract
BACKGROUND AND OBJECTIVES The current study examined how effectiveness of exposure-based CBT was related to indices of emotional processing and inhibitory learning during exposure exercises. METHODS Adolescents with anxiety disorder(s) (N = 72; age 11-19; 85% girls) received a group-based, intensive two-week treatment of which effectiveness was indexed by the SCARED and by ratings of anxiety and approach towards individualized goal situations. To index emotional processing, subjective units of distress (SUDs) were used to indicate both initial and final fear level, and absolute, relative, and total dose of fear reduction. To index inhibitory learning, subjective threat expectancies (STEs) were used to indicate initial and final threat expectancy, and absolute, relative, and total dose of expectancy change. RESULTS From pre-treatment to follow-up, there was a large-sized reduction of anxiety symptoms, small-sized decrease of subjective anxiety and a large-sized increase in subjective approach towards individual treatment goals. Higher fear levels prior to exposure were related to a larger decrease of symptoms. Higher threat expectancies after exposure exercises were independently associated with less decrease of anxiety and increase of approach towards treatment goals. Total dose of experienced fear reduction and total dose of experienced expectancy change were (partly) independently related to more increase in approach towards individualized goal situations. LIMITATIONS As patients also received other treatment elements, the results cannot be interpreted unequivocally. CONCLUSIONS The pattern of findings seems to indicate that emotional processing (as indexed by fear reduction) and inhibitory learning (as indexed by expectancy change) are both relevant in exposure-based CBT.

Abstract
Purpose One of the challenges for mental health research is the lack of an agreed set of outcome measures that are used routinely and consistently between disciplines and across studies in order to build a more robust evidence base for how to better understand young people's mental health and effectively address diverse needs. Methods This study involved a scoping review of reviews on consensus of the use of mental health and wellbeing measures with children and young people. We were particularly interested to identify if there are differences in measures that are recommended for children and young people with care experience including those with developmental disabilities. Findings We identified 41 reviews, of which two had a focus on child welfare settings, three on childhood trauma and 14 focused on children and young people with developmental disabilities. Overall, our review highlights a lack of consensus and a diversity of measures within the field. We identified 60 recommended measures, of which only nine were recommended by more than one review. Conclusions Our review highlights the need for greater agreement in the use of mental health outcome measures. While our review highlights that there is value in identifying measures that can be used with any child or young person, researchers need to take into account additional considerations when working with children and young people with care experience and those with developmental disabilities, to ensure measures are accessible and sensitive to their life experiences.

Abstract
Early studies conceptualized the "anxious bully" as different from typical bullies due to their anxiety and home problems. Yet, empirical findings are mixed, and no study has reported associations between youth bullying perpetration, youth anxiety, and parent distress in a clinically anxious sample. We assessed 220 youths' anxiety symptom severity, frequency of the bullying perpetration in the past month, and parent levels of distress. Fifty percent of youths endorsed at least one perpetration act and 17% endorsed six or more. Youth anxiety, but not parent distress, was significantly associated with perpetration. We also found a significant interaction such that youth anxiety was positively associated with bullying perpetration when parent distress was high, but not low. Findings fill a glaring knowledge gap regarding this overlooked group of youth, anxious bullies, and provide novel insights into the interplay between youth distress and parent distress in predicting bullying perpetration.
