Abstract
BACKGROUND AND OBJECTIVES Adolescent electronic cigarette (EC) use has reached epidemic rates and has been linked to numerous mental health and psychosocial stressors (PS). There is limited qualitative data on PS for adolescents with e-cigarette, or vaping, product-use associated lung injury (EVALI), a severe complication of EC use. METHODS All patients hospitalized at Children's Medical Center in Dallas, Texas from 2018 to 2022 and met CDC case definitions for EVALI were included in the analysis. PS were extracted from the electronic health record and analyzed for recurring themes using the HEADSS assessment as a framework. Results were summarized using descriptive statistics, and representative quotations were selected to highlight each theme. RESULTS Forty-three adolescents (mean age 16.3 years; 62.8 % male; 39.5 % Non-Hispanic White, 60.5 % Hispanic) were included in the analysis, and 40 (93 %) reported PS. The most common themes were family (51 %; "restraining order issued against 28-year-old brother"), polysubstance use (77 %; "experimenting with…ecstasy, LSD, CCC, misusing Adderall"), and mental health (63 %; "has been suicidal since he was 'a toddler'"). Less commonly, patients reported PS related to peers (28 %; "spending the entire day at the cemetery where his best friend was buried"), school (49 %; "attending his second alternative school"), and the legal system (19 %; "placed in juvenile detention, released, and will be on probation"). CONCLUSIONS Adolescents with EVALI had PS that were chronic, severe, and involving multiple domains. These findings emphasize the importance of psychosocial screening in adolescents and coordinating interdisciplinary care with mental health and social services.

Abstract
Background and Objectives: In 2022, the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) discovered that 2.55 million middle and high school students were using electronic cigarettes (e-cigarettes) in the US alone. E-cigarettes allow people to inhale a nicotine solution (e-liquid) into their bodies. While e-cigarettes are often advertised as a way to help people quit traditional tobacco products, the World Health Organization (WHO) has stated that there is no proof of e-cigarettes being effective at reducing an individual's tobacco use. The objective of this study is to determine why adolescents start smoking e-cigarettes. Materials and Methods: For the following study, the National Youth Tobacco Survey (NYTS) 2021 was used. This is a nationally representative cross-sectional survey that includes middle and high school students. The data were analyzed using SAS v.9.4. The odds ratio for smoking e-cigarettes was evaluated for both sex and race via a logistic regression. Results: It was discovered that the percentage of only e-cigarette smokers (12.10%) was 5.5 times the percentage of only traditional smokers (2.19%). Additionally, the median age at which adolescents started smoking e-cigarettes was fifteen years with an IQR (Inter Quartile Range) of two. We used a logistic regression to show that biological sex and race were significant predictors of e-cigarette usage. Conclusions: In general, we saw that adolescents were mostly starting to smoke e-cigarettes because their friends were doing it, out of curiosity, they were depressed or anxious, and/or to get a "high", implying that adolescents mostly started smoking in order to fit in and/or to numb themselves. Interestingly, reasons like cost, using them to quit smoking, seeing them in the media, and ease of attainment were ranked the lowest when it came to smoking e-cigarettes. However, their lower costs naturally lead to increased accessibility compared to traditional cigarettes, making them easier to reach the hands of teenagers. Overall, in this paper, we aim to identify if adolescents are choosing e-cigarettes as their first foray into tobacco products and why.

Abstract
Vaping, or the use of electronic cigarettes (e-cigarettes), is an ongoing issue for public health. The rapid increase in e-cigarette usage, particularly among adolescents, has often been referred to as an epidemic. Drawing upon this epidemiological analogy between vaping and infectious diseases as a theoretical framework, we present a deterministic compartmental model of adolescent e-cigarette smoking which accounts for social influences on initiation, relapse, and cessation behaviours. We use results from a sensitivity analysis of the model's parameters on various response variables to identify key influences on system dynamics and simplify the model into one that can be analysed more thoroughly. We identify a single feasible endemic equilibrium for the proportion of smokers that decreases as social influence on cessation increases. Through steady state and stability analyses, as well as simulations of the model, we conclude that social influences from and on temporary quitters are not important in overall model dynamics, and that social influences from permanent quitters can have a significant impact on long-term system dynamics. In particular, we show that social influence on cessation can induce persistent recurrent smoking outbreaks.

Abstract
Background Electronic nicotine delivery systems ("e-cigarettes") are the nicotine product most commonly used by adolescents. Research, treatment, and policy could benefit from measures of adolescent e-cigarette beliefs about outcomes of use (ie, expectancies). In the current study, we developed and tested an adolescent electronic nicotine vaping expectancy measure. Methods A focus group with adolescents evaluated potential e-cigarette expectancy items. A panel of national experts assisted in revision of these items. Finally, items were administered to a sample of adolescents 14-17 years old (N = 267, Mean age 15.6, SD = 1.1, 50.9% Female, 50.2% Non-Hispanic White, 22.5% Non-Hispanic Black, 14.2% Hispanic) in a large Southeastern metropolitan area in the United States. Results Exploratory Factor Analysis revealed a four factor solution: Negative Consequences (Cronbach's α = .92); Positive Reinforcement (α = .83); Negative Affect Reduction (α = .95); and Weight Control (α = .89). Subscales were significantly correlated with vaping susceptibility and lifetime vaping. Subscales successfully differentiated susceptible adolescents from confirmed non-susceptible adolescents, with susceptible adolescents reporting more positive expectancies, eg, Positive Reinforcement, M = 5.0, SD = 2.0 vs M = 3.0, SD = 2.1, P < .001, η2 = 0.19, and less negative expectancies, M = 5.5, SD = 2.3 vs M = 6.5, SD = 2.6, P = .001, η2 = 0.04. Similar results were found comparing adolescents who have never vaped nicotine with those who have vaped nicotine. Hierarchical linear regression demonstrated subscales were significant predictors of lifetime vaping after controlling for demographics, vaping ad exposure, and peer/family vaping. Conclusions A preliminary version of an adolescent expectancy measure appears reliable and valid based on expert input and pilot testing with adolescents. Promising results were found in the domains of concurrent validity, discriminant validity, and incremental validity. Future research and evaluation efforts will be able to use this tool to further prevention and treatment goals.

Abstract
E-cigarettes and vaping products were first introduced in the United States around 2007, and quickly grew in popularity. By 2014, e-cigarettes had become the most commonly used tobacco product among youth in the United States. An e-cigarette, or vaping, product use-associated lung injury (EVALI) outbreak was identified by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) in 2019, with many cases in the adolescent population. The CDC opened a national database of cases and launched a multistate investigation; reported cases reached a peak in September 2019. The CDC investigation found that a vaping liquid additive, vitamin E acetate, was strongly linked to the EVALI outbreak but determined that the decline in cases was likely multifactorial. Due to decreased cases and the identification of a potential cause of the outbreak, the CDC stopped collecting data on EVALI cases as of February 2020. However, e-cigarettes and vaping products have continued to be the most popular tobacco product among youth, though state and national regulations on these products have increased since 2016. While pediatric case series and studies have shown differences in clinical presentation and medical histories between pediatric and adult EVALI cases, the fact that cases are no longer tracked at a national level limits necessary information for pediatric clinicians and researchers. We describe the available literature on the diagnosis, pathophysiology, treatment, and outcomes of EVALI in the pediatric population, and provide clinical and public health recommendations to facilitate prevention and management of EVALI specific to pediatrics.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Health disparities associated with e-cigarette use are increasingly apparent among US adolescents. Perceptions of e-cigarette harm and addiction play an important role in understanding adolescents' e-cigarette use behavior. The objective of this systematic review is to examine racial/ethnic and socio-economic disparities in e-cigarette harm and addiction perceptions among US adolescents. METHODS We searched five databases to identify cross-sectional or longitudinal studies that focused on adolescents (≤ 18 years of age) who were ever, current, or never e-cigarettes users; we then examined how race/ethnicity and/or socio-economic status (SES) impacted e-cigarette harm and/or addiction perceptions. Two co-authors independently identified relevant studies, extracted data, and assessed the risk of bias. RESULTS Adhering to PRISMA guidelines, eight of 226 identified studies met the inclusion criteria. These eight studies examined either perceptions regarding absolute e-cigarette harm and/or addiction (i.e., assessing perception of only e-cigarette) or relative e-cigarette harm and/or addiction (i.e., comparative perceptions to traditional cigarettes) by race and ethnicity. Two of the eight studies assessed absolute harm and/or addiction perceptions of e-cigarettes by SES. Our results indicate that, compared to all other racial/ethnic groups, relative e-cigarette harm and addiction perceptions were lower among Non-Hispanic White adolescents; however, absolute e-cigarette harm perception was higher among these groups. No clear patterns of racial/ethnic differences in absolute e-cigarette addiction perceptions and SES differences in absolute e-cigarette harm perceptions were reported. CONCLUSION More research is needed to explicitly assess perceptions of e-cigarette harm and addiction among US adolescents by race/ethnicity and SES to develop subgroup appropriate public health messaging.

Abstract
The prevalence of dual usage and the relatively low cessation rate among e-cigarette (EC) users suggest that ECs have not demonstrated significant effectiveness as a smoking cessation tool. Furthermore, there has been a substantial increase in the prevalence of EC usage in recent years. Therefore, the objective of this study is to investigate the association between EC use and the incidence of respiratory symptoms and chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD). A total of 10,326 participants aged between 20 and 55 years, without any respiratory diseases or COPD, were recruited for the study. These individuals attended employee physical examinations conducted at 16 public hospitals in Hebei province, China from 2015 to 2020. Logistic regression models were utilized to assess the association between EC use and the risk of respiratory symptoms and COPD using risk ratios along with their corresponding 95% confidence intervals. Restricted cubic spline functions were employed to investigate the dose-response non-linear relationship. The robustness of the logistic regression models was evaluated through subgroup analyses, and sensitivity analyses. During the 5-year follow-up period, a total of 1071 incident cases of respiratory symptoms and 146 incident cases of COPD were identified in this cohort study. After adjusting for relevant confounding factors, EC users demonstrated a respective increase in the risk of reporting respiratory symptoms and COPD by 28% and 8%. Furthermore, dual users who used both ECs and combustible cigarettes exhibited an elevated risk of incident respiratory symptoms and COPD by 41% and 18%, respectively, compared to those who had never used non-users of any cigarette products. The association between daily EC consumption and the development of respiratory symptoms, as well as COPD, demonstrated a significant J-shaped pattern. The potential adverse association between the consumption of ECs, particularly when used in combination with combustible cigarettes, and the development of respiratory symptoms and COPD necessitates careful consideration. Policymakers should approach ECs cautiously as a prospective smoking cessation tool.

Abstract
OBJECTIVE Metacognition can be understood as 'cognition of cognition' or 'thinking about thinking'. Metacognition research has primarily focused on cigarette smoking, while e-cigarette use has been relatively unexplored. The study sought to examine the properties of the Metacognitions about Smoking Questionnaire (MSQ), as it was adapted for use among adolescent and young adult e-cigarette users. Further, the study sought to examine the ability of the Metacognitions about Smoking Questionnaire (MSQ) to predict past 30-day e-cigarette use among adolescent and young adult e-cigarette users. METHODS The study analyzed data collected by the Texas Adolescent Tobacco and Marketing Surveillance System (TATAMS) in Spring 2020. The instrument consisted of 20 items found to have sound psychometric properties when validated among self-defined cigarette smokers in the UK. The instrument was adapted for e-cigarette use by providing a brief description before the items. Participants were asked "Which of the following products you use most often?", and those who selected "e-cigarettes" were included in the study. Participants were then presented with 20 statements about beliefs people hold about using e-cigarette and were instructed to determine their agreement with the statements on a four-point Likert scale with respect to e-cigarette use. Factors were extracted using Exploratory Factor Analysis (EFA) and factor structure was verified using Confirmatory Factor Analysis (CFA). Further, each of the extracted factors were used to predict past 30-day e-cigarette use frequency in the most frequent group, using conditional effects, holding the most frequent category of categorical covariates, mean of continuous covariates and the other two metacognitive factors as reference levels. Past 30-day e-cigarette use was measured as the number of days of use in the past 30-days. RESULTS Participants who reported e-cigarette use in the past 30-days were included in this analysis (n = 244). Participants were in 10th grade (n = 46), 12th grade (n = 92) and two years beyond high school (n = 106). EFA was conducted and items were assessed with varimax rotation. CFA was conducted with multiple models (one factor, two factor and three factor solutions) and the 3-factor solution showed the best fit. Factors were named as 'positive metacognitions about cognitive regulation'(PMCR) (e.g. '…helps me think more clearly'), 'positive metacognitions about emotional regulation'(PMER) (e.g. '…helps me to relax when I am agitated'), and 'negative metacognitions'(NM) (e.g. 'It is hard to control my desire for e-cigarettes'). Cronbach's alpha showed high internal consistency (0.92, 0.90 and 0.91, respectively). The median score (range) was 7 (5-20), 10 (5-20), and 11 (10-40) on PMCR, PMER, and NM factors. Higher scores denote higher levels of outcome expectancies of that factor. Lowest and highest score on PMCR was associated with 15 and 20.4 days of e-cigarette use in the past 30-days, respectively. Similarly, lowest and highest score on PMER and NM were associated with 13.2 and 21 days, and 14.7 and 24.6 days, respectively. The results indicate that participants who reported highest outcome expectancies for cognitive regulation, emotional regulation, and negative outcomes, used e-cigarettes on average 5, 8 and 10 days more than those who reported lowest outcome expectancies for these factors. CONCLUSION The MSQ showed good psychometric soundness for measuring metacognitive factors associated with e-cigarette use. For cigarette smoking, the original questionnaire distinguished negative cognitions of 'uncontrollability' and 'cognitive interference', which was not seen in e-cigarette users. This indicates a difference in cognitions of cigarette and e-cigarette users. The instrument can help understand the similar role of cognition in e-cigarette use behavior and further assess association with e-cigarette use.

Abstract
The prevalence of vaping has overtaken conventional cigarettes as the most frequent form of nicotine consumption among 15-24-year olds. There are currently a large number of both legitimate and illegitimate products and suppliers offering more than 8000 different flavors of vape on the market, whose additives are not tested, studied or regulated and whose safety and toxicity profile remains unknown. In vitro studies have demonstrated a dose-dependent decrease in the viability of normal human bronchial epithelial cells after exposure to vapor from electronic vape devices.Short- and medium-term studies to date indicate that vapor-induced pulmonary lesions are the most serious and commonly reported side effect; such lesions include bilateral ground glass opacities in lung bases with subpleural preservation, bilateral infiltrates, pleural effusion, pneumomediastinum and nodular opacities. Cases of EVALI have been described in patients with daily exposure, as well as in users who reported having been exposed to these substances at least once a month. The most frequently inhaled substances are THC, flavored liquids of unknown content, and nicotine.The clinical manifestations of dyspnea and cough are the most frequent respiratory symptomatology, in addition to constitutional manifestations such as fever and chills, and gastrointestinal manifestations such as vomiting, nausea, abdominal pain and diarrhea. To these can be added the presence of tachypnea, tachycardia, elevated blood pressure, hypoxia, leukocytosis with neutrophilia and elevated ESR.

Abstract
The vaping industry has been found to employ similar tactics to tobacco industry actors to seek credibility and distort the scientific evidence base around the health harms of nicotine vaping products. As vaping industry interests undermine vaping control efforts, safeguards are necessary to protect against this influence. We aimed to examine health organizations' policies on vaping industry participation in their activities in Australia. A descriptive approach integrating policy analysis and key informant surveys was used to obtain vaping industry participation information from health research stakeholders. Descriptive statistics on organization type, policy document type, policy document industry focus (tobacco or vaping) and respondent role and responsibility were collected. We used framework analysis to identify themes describing organizational allowances, constraints, and rationale for vaping industry research participation. Relevant health organizations were identified within Australia for policy searching (n = 156), which identified 47 unique policy documents. After contacting 267 key stakeholders from eligible organizations, 31 survey responses were analysed. Research organizations and universities were highly represented in both the policy and survey data. Most health research stakeholders recognized that vaping industry interests counteract public health priorities and opposed vaping industry participation. However, many organizations lacked clear, vaping industry-specific participation policies. To protect the integrity of the emerging evidence base around vaping harms which inform vaping policy, health organizations require strong, comprehensive policies to resist vaping industry participation in research.

Abstract
Electronic cigarettes, a recent and burgeoning product, are gaining traction among the general population. However, despite their growing popularity, there is a lack of comprehensive research on their potential health risks. A prominent concern is EVALI (electronic cigarette or vaping product use-associated lung injury), a newly recognized condition currently under intense investigation. Here, we report the case of a 24-year-old male with a history of chronic smoking e-cigarettes and vaping products heavily over the past year. He sought urgent care at the emergency room due to symptoms that had been present for seven days before seeking medical attention. These symptoms included a sudden onset of difficulty breathing at rest, an intermittent dry cough producing a small amount of greenish sputum, and occasional episodes of mild hemoptysis. Chest radiograph showed bilateral diffuse infiltrates including almost innumerable tiny interstitial nodules. Multiple lobes of the lungs were affected by consolidations and patches of ground-glass opacities in the chest high-resolution computed tomography (HRCT) image. Throughout the following week, the patient's health showed gradual improvement with the aid of supportive measures and corticosteroid treatment. As part of the recovery plan, the patient was released with a gradually reducing regimen of oral corticosteroids and was scheduled for regular outpatient monitoring. The progression of the recovery was notable through enhancements in clinical symptoms, biological markers, and radiological findings.

Abstract
E-cigarettes are now very popular in the world. Compared to traditional cigarettes, e-cigarettes are often considered safer and healthier. However, their safety remains controversial and requires further research and regulation. In this study, we aimed to understand the possible hazards to humans of four compounds (formaldehyde, acetaldehyde, acrolein, and acetone) and seven heavy metals (arsenic, cadmium, manganese, lead, copper, nickel, and chromium) contained in e-cigarette liquids and aerosols and perform a health risk assessment. We searched PubMed, CNKI, and other databases for relevant literature to obtain data on organic compounds and heavy metals in e-cigarette liquids and aerosols, and conducted acute, chronic, and carcinogenic risk assessments of various chemicals by different exposure routes. This study showed that exposure to four organic compounds and seven heavy metals in e-cigarette aerosols and e-liquids can cause varying levels of health risks in humans through different routes, with the inhalation route posing a higher overall risk than dermal exposure and oral intake. Various chemicals at high exposure doses can produce health risks beyond the acceptable range. E-cigarette designers must improve their products by changing the composition of the e-liquid and controlling the power of the device to reduce the health effects on humans.

Abstract
Currently it is not fully understood how the device settings and electronic liquid (e-liquid) composition, including their form of nicotine content, impact mouth and throat losses, and potentially lead to the variations in total nicotine delivery to the human lungs. An in situ size assessment method was developed for real-time measurements at the mouthpiece and outlet of a biorelevant mouth-throat to account for the dynamic nature of the aerosol. The aerosol size, temperature, and delivery through the mouth-throat replica and the exhaled aerosol between the puff intervals were measured at different wattages using various e-liquid compositions. The effects of body temperature and humidity on aerosol size and nicotine delivery were also explored to evaluate the importance of considering realistic in vivo conditions in in vitro measurements. Notably, in vitro tests with body temperature and humidity in mouth-throat model vs room conditions, resulted in larger aerosol size at the end of the throat (Dv50=5.83±0.33 μm vs 3.05±0.15 μm), significantly higher thoracic nicotine delivery (>90% vs 50-85%) potentially due to the lower exhaled amount (<10% vs 15-50%). Besides, higher VG/PG ratios resulted in significantly lower exhaled amount and higher mouth-throat nicotine deposition. One of the main outcomes of the study was finding significantly lower exhaled amount and higher thoracic nicotine delivery with nicotine salt form vs free-base. Considering body temperature and humidity also showed significant enhancement in nicotine delivery, so it is essential to account for biorelevant experimental conditions in benchtop testing.

Abstract
PURPOSE OF REVIEW E-cigarettes have been long purported to be a mechanism of harm reduction in current smokers. However, market expansion to adolescents has been aggressive, despite government interventions. Research examining the adverse effects of e-cigarettes in teens with asthma has been limited. We discuss the most recent data on the pulmonary manifestations of e-cigarettes use and exposure in adolescents with asthma. RECENT FINDINGS Adolescents with asthma are more likely to be e-cigarette users than those without asthma and more likely to have asthma exacerbations. Increased pulmonary inflammatory cytokines have been seen in e-cigarette users and mouse models. Yet, providers are not confident in e-cigarette screening and counselling despite acknowledging adolescents are using e-cigarettes regularly. SUMMARY Since the introduction of e-cigarettes into the United States market in 2007, adolescents use of these products has risen, even after a brief decline during the height of the COVID-19 pandemic. This review will describe the most recent studies on e-cigarette use trends, cytotoxicity of e-cigarette aerosol and associations with the diagnosis and symptoms of asthma. Knowledge gaps, advocacy efforts, evidence on e-cigarette cessation will be highlighted.

Abstract
BACKGROUND E-cigarette or vaping-use related acute lung injury (EVALI) is a spectrum of radiographic and histologic patterns consistent with acute to subacute lung injury. However, limited data exist characterizing bronchoalveolar lavage (BAL) findings. The goal of this study is to further define the pathologic findings from BAL and biopsy samples of subjects with EVALI across 7 institutions. METHODS A multicentered registry of patients admitted with EVALI who underwent flexible bronchoscopy with BAL+/-transbronchial biopsy from July 2019 to April 2021 was compiled for retrospective evaluation from 7 academic institutions throughout the United States. Radiographic and cytopathologic findings and frequencies were correlated with the substance vaped. RESULTS Data from 21 subjects (42.9% women) who were predominantly White (76.2%) with a median age of 25 years (range, 16 to 68) with EVALI were included in this study. Sixteen patients (76.2%) reported use of tetrahydrocannabinol; the remainder used nicotine. BAL was performed in 19 of the 21 subjects, and transbronchial lung biopsy was performed in 7 subjects. BAL findings revealed neutrophilic predominance (median, 59.5%, range, 3.1 to 98) in most cases. Ten BAL samples demonstrated pulmonary eosinophilia ranging from 0.2% to 49.1% with one subject suggesting a diagnosis of acute eosinophilic pneumonia associated with the use of e-cigarettes. Lipid-laden macrophages were noted in 10 of 15 reports (66.7%). Transbronchial biopsy most frequently demonstrated patterns of organizing pneumonia (57.1%). CONCLUSION EVALI-associated BAL findings typically demonstrate a spectrum of nonspecific inflammatory changes, including neutrophilia, lipid-laden macrophages, and in some cases eosinophilia.

Abstract
INTRODUCTION E-cigarette, or vaping, product use-associated lung injury (EVALI) results from inhaling the aerosol of e-cigarettes and has similar clinical features to coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19). EVALI case counts since the declaration of the COVID-19 pandemic is unknown. METHODS A retrospective electronic health record chart review of adolescents hospitalized at one institution with EVALI was conducted. Clinical characteristics and hospital course of patients hospitalized during the pandemic were compared to those prepandemic. RESULTS The clinical presentation of adolescents hospitalized prior-to (n = 19) and during the COVID-19 pandemic (n = 22) were similar with respect to constitutional, respiratory, and gastrointestinal symptoms. All patients hospitalized during the pandemic were tested for COVID-19 at least once. Only one patient had a positive SARS-CoV-2 RT-PCR test result. Thirty-one out of 39 patients treated with corticosteroids had clinical improvement within 24 h (79%). Patients hospitalized during the pandemic had a shorter median length of stay (5 vs. 7 days, p < 0.01), and were less often discharged with home oxygen (1 vs. 6 patients, p = 0.04). Pulmonary function tests improved pre- to postcorticosteroid treatment and postcorticosteroid to follow-up. CONCLUSIONS Eliciting a history of vaping in adolescents presenting with constitutional, respiratory, and gastrointestinal symptoms is important to identify EVALI cases, which have continued throughout the COVID-19 pandemic. A shorter length of stay with less need for mechanical ventilation and home oxygen in adolescents hospitalized during the pandemic may reflect increased familiarity with EVALI characteristics. Corticosteroids led to clinical and pulmonary function improvement.

Abstract
Social networks can enhance behavioral changes or entrench existing patterns of behavior. We aimed to identify how network ties to other e-cigarette users shaped responses to the pandemic and e-cigarette considerations. A national U.S. survey of 562 e-cigarette users was conducted during April 2020. Participants self-reported network ties to other e-cigarette users and pandemic outcomes: receiving expressions of concern about vaping, risk for a bad COVID outcome, changes in e-cigarette risk perceptions, and considerations of quitting. Each additional e-cigarette user tie was associated with a 0.014 unit increase in expressions of concern (p < 0.001), a 0.034 unit increase in perceived risk of a bad outcome (p < 0.05), and 3.9% higher odds of quit considerations (OR = 1.039; p < 0.01). Family ties to e-cigarette users were particularly important. Additional e-cigarette users within a network shaped risk perceptions in response to COVID-19. Network ties to other e-cigarette users have implications for cessation or reduction of e-cigarette use.

Abstract
Physical activity and team sports may be protective of substance use among adolescents, although there is mixed evidence on whether muscle-building exercise is associated with patterns of e-cigarette use (i.e., vaping), cigarette use, and cannabis use. Therefore, this study aimed to determine the association between muscle-building exercise and patterns of concurrent substance use among U.S. adolescents. Cross-sectional data from the 2019 Youth Risk Behavior Survey (N = 8,474) were analyzed in 2022. Muscle-building exercise was assessed by number of days of the behavior in the past week and categorized based on level of engagement (none, low, medium, and high). Concurrent vaping, cigarette use, and cannabis use within the past 30 days were assessed using a combined, four-category variable (no use, any single use, any dual use, and triple use). Multinomial logistic regressions, with coefficients transformed to relative risk ratios (RRR), were conducted to estimate the associations between muscle-building exercise and concurrent substance use among the overall sample, and by sex, while adjusting for relevant sociodemographic variables. Among the overall sample, high engagement (6-7 days) in muscle-building exercise was associated with greater relative risk of any single use (RRR 1.36, 95% confidence interval [CI] 1.06-1.72), any dual use (RRR 1.46, 95% CI 1.10-2.94), and triple use (RRR 1.81, 95% CI 1.05-3.12). While muscle-building exercise was associated with greater relative risk of concurrent patterns of vaping, cigarette use, and cannabis use among adolescent males, there were no significant relationships found among adolescent females. Healthcare professionals should consider this association when treating adolescent males, particularly given the high prevalence of muscle-building exercise and substance use among this group. More research is needed to understand the experiences of adolescent males who report high engagement in muscle-building exercise and substance use to uncover mechanisms of association.

Abstract
Background: Understanding time trends in risk factors for substance use may contextualize and explain differing time trends in substance use. Methods: We examined data (N = 536,291; grades 8/10/12) from Monitoring the Future, years 1991-2019. Using Latent Profile Analyses, we identified six time use patterns: one for those working at a paid job and the other five defined by levels of socialization (low/high) and engagement in structured activities like sports (engaged/disengaged), with the high social/engaged group split further by levels of unsupervised social activities. We tested associations between time use profiles and past two-week binge drinking as well as past-month alcohol use, cigarette use, cannabis use, other substance use, and vaping. We examined trends and group differences overall and by decade (or for vaping outcomes, year). Results: Prevalence of most substance use outcomes decreased over time among all groups. Cannabis use increased, with the largest increase in the group engaged in paid employment. Vaping substantially increased, with the highest nicotine vaping increase in the high social/engaged group with less supervision and the highest cannabis vaping increase in the highly social but otherwise disengaged group. Substance use was lowest in the low social groups, highest in the high social and employed groups. Conclusions: While alcohol, cigarette, and other substance use have declined for all groups, use remained elevated given high levels of social time, especially with low engagement in structured activities or low supervision, or paid employment. Cannabis use and vaping are increasing across groups, suggesting the need for enhanced public health measures.

Abstract
AIM To quantify the trends in frequent and occasional cannabis vaping, demographic differences and concurrent nicotine and alcohol use. DESIGN Observational study. Survey-weighted multinomial logistic regression models assessed trends and disparities in past 30-day cannabis use. Trends were assessed overall and by sex, race/ethnicity, parental education and urbanicity. Multinomial logistic regression models also estimated associations of cannabis use (none, use without vaping, use with vaping) with past 2-week binge drinking and past 30-day nicotine/tobacco use. SETTING United States, 2017-19. PARTICIPANTS Participants in the national Monitoring the Future (n = 51 052) survey. MEASUREMENTS Past 30-day frequent cannabis use (six or more times/30 days) and past 30-day occasional use (one to five times/30 days), with and without vaping. FINDINGS Past 30-day frequent cannabis use with vaping and occasional use with vaping rose from 2017 to 2019. Past 30-day frequent and occasional cannabis use without vaping declined. Certain groups, such as Hispanic/Latino or lower socio-economic status adolescents, experienced particularly notable increases in frequent cannabis use with vaping (e.g. prevalence among Hispanic/Latino adolescents). Adolescents who reported smoking and vaping nicotine, and 10+ occasions of binge drinking, were 42.28 [95% confidence interval (CI) = 33.14-53.93] and 10.09 (95% CI = 4.51-22.53) times more likely to report past 30-day cannabis use with vaping, respectively, compared with no use. DISCUSSION Cannabis use without vaping appears to be declining among adolescents in the United States, while cannabis use with vaping is accelerating; frequent cannabis vaping is especially increasing, with consistent increases across almost all adolescent demographic groups. Cannabis use among US adolescents remains highly associated with other substance use.

Abstract
Observational studies investigating the health consequences of vaping among youth and young adults are limited. This study aimed to describe and examine the risk for health symptoms by vape user category (never users, marijuana only, nicotine only, and dual users). Health symptoms included adverse respiratory, gastrointestinal, and constitutional problems. This cross-sectional study analyzed data from Fall 2020, Wave 12 (n = 2389) of the Texas Adolescent Tobacco and Marketing Surveillance System. Chi-square, one-way analysis of variance (ANOVA), and multivariable logistic regression analyses examined the associations between past 30-day vape user category and 15 health symptoms (e.g., coughing, nausea, vomiting, fever). For total symptoms, dual vapers reported the highest mean (2.76[standard deviation = 3.17]), followed by nicotine-only vapers (2.47[2.89]), marijuana-only vapers (1.94[2.60]), and never users (1.56[2.31]), p < .001. Dual vapers and nicotine-only vapers had significantly higher odds of experiencing respiratory symptoms as compared with never users (adjusted odds ratios [AORs] = 2.35, 95% confidence interval [CI]: 1.30, 4.25; AOR = 1.86, 95% CI: 1.22, 2.81, respectively). Marijuana-only (AOR = 2.41, 95% CI: 1.53, 3.79), nicotine-only (AOR = 2.03, 95% CI: 1.38, 2.99), and dual vapers (AOR = 2.03, 95% CI: 1.15, 3.57) had significantly higher odds of gastrointestinal symptoms compared with never users. Dual vapers had significantly higher odds of experiencing constitutional symptoms as compared to never users (AOR = 1.92, 95% CI: 1.10, 3.34). This study uniquely highlights the risk for gastrointestinal symptoms from vaping. Future research and clinical practice should monitor the occurrence of these symptoms and explore potential mechanisms, such as specific flavorings or chemicals, for the link between vaping and health symptoms.

Abstract
AbstractE-cigarette usage (also known as e-cigarettes or vaping products) has increasingly been recognized as a global public health problem. One challenge in particular involves their marketing to minors (teenagers and children) and the rising prevalence of use in this population. E-cigarettes unnecessarily expose minors to health risks, these include respiratory health problems, such as exacerbations of asthma, bronchitis, and respiratory-tract irritation. Nicotine, commonly found in e-cigarettes, is also associated with cognitive impairment and neurodevelopmental problems. E-cigarettes are also risk factors for downstream substance use, including cigarettes and cannabis initiation (the gateway hypothesis), which compounds health risks in dual users. Current public health preventative and intervention studies are limited, and there is a clear need for more interventions that may prevent usage and assist with cessation in this vulnerable population. Physician education and screening uptake should also be enhanced. Stricter public health policy and protection measures are also needed on a global scale to limit e-cigarette exposure in minors.

Abstract
PURPOSE To determine the association between compulsive exercise and vaping among college students aged 18-26 years, and to characterize the type of vaping used among participants who report compulsive exercise. METHODS Cross-sectional, pooled data from two survey years (2018-2020; N = 2125) of the national (U.S.) Healthy Minds Study were analyzed. Compulsive exercise was measured based on number of occurrences in the past 28 days (analyzed continuously and among those who reported ≥ 1 and ≥ 20 occurrences). Vaping was measured based on reported use in the past 30 days. Most recent type of vaping was assessed only among participants who reported vaping. Logistic regression analyses were conducted to estimate the associations between compulsive exercise and vaping, while adjusting for covariates. RESULTS For every additional occurrence of compulsive exercise reported by participants, their odds of also reporting vaping increased by 5% (95% CI 1.01-1.09). Participants who reported 20 or more occurrences of compulsive exercise in the past 28 days, a clinical threshold, had 3.71 (95% CI 1.28-10.76) higher odds of vaping in the past 30 days. Among participants who endorsed vaping, nicotine vaping was the most common recent type for those who reported any (76.2%) or 20 or more (50.2%) occurrences of compulsive exercise. CONCLUSION Compulsive exercise is associated with vaping in a national, U.S. sample of college students, with nicotine vaping being the most common type used. Screening for both compulsive exercise and vaping, particularly if either is reported, among college-age young adults is necessary to implement prevention and intervention strategies. Abstract
Asthma is among the most common medical conditions affecting children and young people, with adolescence a recognised period of increased risk, overrepresented in analyses examining recent increasing asthma mortality rates. Asthma may change significantly during this period and management also occurs in the context of patients seeking increased autonomy and self-governance whilst navigating increasing academic and social demands. A number of disease factors can destabilise asthma during adolescence including: increased rates of anaphylaxis, anxiety, depression, obesity, and, in females, an emerging resistance to corticosteroids and the pro-inflammatory effects of oestrogen. Patient factors such as smoking, vaping, poor symptom recognition, treatment non-adherence and variable engagement with health services contribute to difficult to treat asthma. Significant deficiencies in the current approach to transition have been identified by a recent EAACI task force, and subsequent asthma-specific recommendations, published in 2020 provide an important framework moving forward. As with other chronic conditions, effective transition programmes plan ahead, engage with adolescents and their families to identify the patients' management priorities and the current challenges they are experiencing with treatment. Transition needs may vary significantly across asthma patients and for more complex asthma may include dedicated transition clinics involving multidisciplinary care requiring input including, amongst others, allergy and immunology, psychological medicine, respiratory physicians and scientists and nurse specialists. Across different global regions, barriers to treatment may vary but need to be elicited and an individualised approach taken to optimising asthma care which is sustainable within the local adult healthcare system.

Abstract
"E-Cigarette (e-cig) Vaping-Associated Acute Lung Injury" (EVALI) has been linked to vitamin-E-acetate (VEA) and Δ-9-tetrahydrocannabinol (THC), due to their presence in patients' e-cigs and biological samples. Lacking standardized methodologies for patients' data collection and comprehensive physicochemical/toxicological studies using real-world-vapor exposures, very little data are available, thus the underlying pathophysiological mechanism of EVALI is still unknown. This review aims to provide a comprehensive and critical appraisal of existing literature on clinical/epidemiological features and physicochemical-toxicological characterization of vaping emissions associated with EVALI. The literature review of 161 medical case reports revealed that the predominant demographic pattern was healthy white male, adolescent, or young adult, vaping illicit/informal THC-containing e-cigs. The main histopathologic pattern consisted of diffuse alveolar damage with bilateral ground-glass-opacities at chest radiograph/CT, and increased number of macrophages or neutrophils and foamy-macrophages in the bronchoalveolar lavage. The chemical analysis of THC/VEA e-cig vapors showed a chemical difference between THC/VEA and the single THC or VEA. The chemical characterization of vapors from counterfeit THC-based e-cigs or in-house-prepared e-liquids using either cannabidiol (CBD), VEA, or medium-chain triglycerides (MCT), identified many toxicants, such as carbonyls, volatile organic compounds, terpenes, silicon compounds, hydrocarbons, heavy metals, pesticides and various industrial/manufacturing/automotive-related chemicals. There is very scarce published toxicological data on emissions from THC/VEA e-liquids. However, CBD, MCT, and VEA emissions exert varying degrees of cytotoxicity, inflammation, and lung damage, depending on puffing topography and cell line. Major knowledge gaps were identified, including the need for more systematic-standardized epidemiological surveys, comprehensive physicochemical characterization of real-world e-cig emissions, and mechanistic studies linking emission properties to specific toxicological outcomes.

Abstract
Adolescence is a period characterized by developmental, psychological, and psychosocial alterations, with a major impact on youths’ attitudes and perceptions. Adolescents with asthma may not comply with treatment and may develop risky behaviors, including smoking, vaping, and other substance use, leading to unanticipated exacerbations and consequences. Vaping has become extremely popular in this age group, and studies have suggested that it has potential adverse effects on asthmatic airways. More well-designed studies are needed to confirm the initial worrying data, and action must be taken by both medical officers and health authorities to deal with the elephant in the room and curb the vaping pandemic. The aim of this paper is to provide a review of the current knowledge regarding the effect of vaping on adolescents with asthma and to propose actions to restrain this fast-growing trend.

Abstract
OBJECTIVES Describe clinical characteristics of adolescents hospitalized with e-cigarette or vaping product use-associated lung injury (EVALI) and to investigate association between EVALI and coagulopathy. METHODS We conducted a retrospective cohort study of adolescents admitted to the general inpatient or ICUs at 2 major tertiary children's hospitals from January 2019 to June 2021. We included analysis of demographics, clinical findings, laboratory and imaging results, and outcomes. RESULTS Forty-four hospitalizations met diagnostic criteria for inclusion per Centers for Disease Control and Prevention guidelines, with 55% of patients admitted after April 2020. Compared with adults, pediatric patients were less likely to present with pulmonary symptoms. Significant laboratory work included elevated white blood cell count of 14.3 k/uL (confidence interval [CI], 13.7-15.0) with neutrophilic predominance, C-reactive protein of 25.2 mg/dL (CI, 22.1-28.2), and erythrocyte sedimentation rate of 66.7 mm/hour (CI, 26.9-76.4). Chest radiographs were poor predictors of disease in 53% of our patients but computed tomography was 100% sensitive. Significant coagulation abnormalities included prothrombin time of 17.7 seconds (CI, 16.4-19.1) and international normalized ratio of 1.54 (CI, 1.43-1.66). Coagulation studies improved with vitamin K and steroid administration. Nine of 16 patients (56%) had abnormal diffusing capacity of the lung for carbon monoxide divided by alveolar volume <80% predicted, suggesting evidence of pulmonary vascular disease, or >100%, suggesting pulmonary hemorrhage. CONCLUSIONS EVALI continues to be an important differential diagnosis in the adolescent population. EVALI is likely a result of systemic inflammation with consequences beyond the pulmonary system. The novel report of coagulopathy among adolescents with EVALI in this cohort reveals an opportunity to detect coagulopathy and initiate early therapy.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Concurrent use of e-cigarettes, cigarettes, and cannabis is common among adolescents, while illicit anabolic-androgenic steroid (AAS) use has recently been on the rise. Today, no known research has investigated the patterns of concurrent substance use and AAS use among adolescents in the United States. OBJECTIVE To determine the association between concurrent lifetime use of e-cigarettes, cigarettes, and cannabis and illicit AAS use among adolescents. METHODS Cross-sectional data from the 2019 Youth Risk Behavior Survey (N = 13,677) were analyzed in 2021. Four mutually exclusive categories of concurrent substance use (no use, any single use, any dual use, and triple use) were constructed, along with any lifetime AAS use. One logistic regression model was estimated to determine the association between concurrent substance use and lifetime AAS use. RESULTS Compared to no use, lifetime triple use (adjusted odds ratio 3.95, 95% confidence interval 1.73-8.95) was associated with lifetime AAS use while adjusting for potential confounders. CONCLUSIONS Findings underscore an overlapping pattern of problematic substance use that may be harmful for adolescents. Health care professionals should be aware of these patterns to improve substance use assessment protocols.

Abstract
Purpose of Review The purpose of this review was to describe the state-of-the-literature on research specific to cannabis vaping among youth and young adults. Recent Findings Out of 1801 records identified, a total of 202 articles met eligibility criteria for inclusion in this review. Most of this literature (46.0% of studies) was specific to the health effects of cannabis vaping, particularly EVALI (e-cigarette and vaping associated lung injury). Other research areas identified in the review included the etiology (24.3%) and epidemiology (24.8%) of cannabis vaping, in addition to articles on regulation (8.4%) and marketing (5.5%) of the same. Summary Cannabis vaping is increasingly common among youth and young adults and more prevalent is settings where recreational use for adults has been legalized. The literature documents a number of negative health effects of cannabis vaping for young people, along with risk factors and reasons for the same. Abstract
Vaping is common among college-age young adults. Preliminary research has shown associations between vaping and eating disorder symptoms, however, there remain gaps in this knowledge among college students. The aim of this study was to determine the associations between vaping and a self-reported lifetime eating disorder diagnosis and eating disorder risk among a large sample of college students. Cross-sectional data from the 2018-2019 national (U.S.) Healthy Minds Study (n = 51,231) were analyzed. Multiple logistic regression analyses were conducted to determine the unadjusted and adjusted associations between vaping or e-cigarette use in the past 30 days and a self-reported lifetime eating disorder diagnosis (any diagnosis, anorexia nervosa, bulimia nervosa, binge-eating disorder) and eating disorder risk (SCOFF). Among the sample, 19.0% of participants reported vaping or e-cigarette use in the past 30 days, 3.7% self-reported any lifetime eating disorder diagnosis, and 25.0% were at elevated risk for an eating disorder. Vaping or e-cigarette use was associated with higher odds of all eating disorder measures, including the self-reported lifetime eating disorder diagnosis items (any diagnosis, anorexia nervosa, bulimia nervosa, binge-eating disorder) and elevated eating disorder risk, while adjusting for demographic and confounding variables. Among a large sample of college students, vaping or e-cigarette use was associated with a self-reported lifetime eating disorder diagnosis and elevated eating disorder risk, which may exacerbate the many medical complications associated with eating disorder behaviors. Clinical professionals should screen for eating disorder behaviors among college students who report vaping or e-cigarette use to monitor symptoms and medical complications.

Abstract
Cannabis has certain health benefits, but some people may experience harms from use. Co-use of tobacco and cannabis is common. Smoke from cannabis contains many of the same carcinogens and toxicants as the smoke from tobacco, raising concerns that cannabis smoking may be a risk factor for cancer. With growing access to and acceptance of medical and nonmedical cannabis, there is an urgent need to understand the risks and benefits of the current modes of cannabis use and how cannabis may be associated with cancer risk. This monograph summarizes a session from a National Cancer Institute Symposium on nonmedical cannabis use and cancer risk. We had 3 objectives: describe the relation between nonmedical cannabis use and cancer risk, delineate patterns and correlates of cannabis co-use with tobacco, and document potentially harmful inhalational exposure resulting from smoked and vaped cannabis. Methodological limitations in the literature and future research recommendations are provided.

Abstract
Substance use, a significant public health issue, is well described in the adult chronic kidney disease (CKD) population. Knowledge about substance use in the adolescent and young adult (AYA) CKD population such as prevalence, impact on kidney function, medication adherence, and psychosocial well-being remain largely unknown. Awareness of and inquiring about substance use is paramount to providing evidence-based care and preparation to transition to adult-focused health services. The authors in this review identify commonly used substances (alcohol, tobacco, marijuana, etc.) and how they impact kidney function and care of the AYA with CKD or kidney failure. Recommendations for screening and intervention strategies are provided.

Abstract
INTRODUCTION Marijuana vaping among adolescents is a growing public health concern. Marijuana vaping exposes youth to greater levels of tetrahydrocannabinol (THC) and may be related to e-cigarette or vaping product use-associated lung injury (EVALI). This study examined the risk factors for initiating marijuana vaping among US adolescents. METHODS We analyzed Waves 3 (2015-2016) and 4 (2016-2018) of the Population Assessment of Tobacco and Health (PATH) Study. We estimate a multivariable logistic regression to model marijuana vaping initiation at Wave 4 among those who never vaped marijuana at Wave 3 (N = 7,821) as a function of key risk factors associated with youth substance use. RESULTS Marijuana vaping initiation is associated with current use of electronic nicotine delivery system (ENDS) (aOR = 2.16, 95 % CI = 1.20, 3.89), cigarettes (aOR = 2.65, 95 % CI = 1.10, 6.35), other marijuana products (aOR = 7.78, 95 % CI = 3.74, 6.15), and alcohol (aOR = 1.98, 95 % CI = 1.35, 2.91). Other factors contributing to marijuana vaping initiation include being 15-17 years old (aOR = 1.51, 95 % CI = 1.19, 1.90) and Hispanic (aOR = 1.37, 95 % CI = 1.08, 1.76), as well as having less than college-level parental education (aOR = 1.35, 95 % CI = 1.07, 1.70), vaping peers (aOR = 2.31; 95 % CI = 1.81, 2.96), and a high internalizing (aOR = 1.49, 95 % CI = 1.10, 2.02) and externalizing tendency (aOR = 1.66, 95 % CI = 1.14, 2.41). CONCLUSIONS Multi-level efforts are needed to target the varying risk factors leading to marijuana vaping initiation in adolescents. Knowledge of these risk factors can help policymakers and health program administrators to identify at-risk individuals and design interventions that can prevent marijuana vaping initiation at the individual, household, school, clinical and public health levels.

Abstract
E-cigarette use harms adolescent health, yet it continues to escalate rapidly among teens nationwide. This longitudinal study sought to identify and differentiate between developmental trajectories of past 30-day e-cigarette use with and without marijuana (i.e., liquid THC) across adolescence (11-19 years old). Three population-based cohorts of adolescents (n = 3907; N = 461,069) living in major metropolitan areas of Texas (Houston, Dallas-Ft. Worth, San Antonio, Austin) completed up to 9 Waves of an e-cigarette use survey, from 2014 to 2019. Growth curve models (GCMs) were used to identify average trajectories of past 30-day e-cigarette use, by cohort. Growth mixture models (GMMs) were used to investigate developmental patterns in these trajectories, by cohort. Sociodemographic differences in trajectories were also investigated. Stable trajectories of e-cigarette use with and without marijuana were identified, from 11 through 19 years of age. Trajectories varied by age of onset; frequency and escalation in use; and substance used. With one exception, all trajectories of e-cigarette use escalated with age. Moreover, age of onset and progression in use were positively related. The most problematic trajectories, corresponding to more frequent use, were observed among the younger cohorts compared to the oldest. Primary prevention is critical. Interventions to prevent the onset and progression in e-cigarette use among teens must begin early (e.g., in middle school) and be sustained throughout adolescence.

Abstract
Electronic cigarettes (EC) are a novel product, marketed as an alternative to tobacco cigarette. Its effects on human health have not been investigated widely yet, especially in specific populations such as patients with asthma. With this review, we use the existing literature in order to answer four crucial questions concerning: (1) ECs' role in the pathogenesis of asthma; (2) ECs' effects on lung function and airway inflammation in patients with asthma; (3) ECs' effects on asthma clinical characteristics in asthmatics who use it regularly; and (4) ECs' effectiveness as a smoking cessation tool in these patients. Evidence suggests that many EC compounds might contribute to the pathogenesis of asthma. Lung function seems to deteriorate by the use of EC in this population, while airway inflammation alters, with the aggravation of T-helper-type-2 (Th2) inflammation being the most prominent but not the exclusive effect. EC also seems to worsen asthma symptoms and the rate and severity of exacerbations in asthmatics who are current vapers, whilst evidence suggests that its effectiveness as a smoking cessation tool might be limited. Asthmatic patients should avoid using EC.

Abstract
Use of electronic nicotine delivery systems (ENDS), also known as e-cigarettes, in the adolescent population has significantly increased over the past several years. This rise led to an outbreak of e-cigarette or vaping product use-associated lung injury (EVALI) in the summer of 2019. Since that time, numerous case reports and case series on vaping and EVALI have been published but the majority of literature highlights the adult population with few articles focusing on pediatric patients. Given the addictive nature of these products and the lack of full understanding of the human health effects, there is concern that use of ENDS may have lasting impacts on users, especially adolescents and young adults. The goal of this review is to critically assess published data on ENDS use in children, report our institutional experience, discuss the reasons why the use of ENDS have increased among young individuals, outline the current understanding of EVALI as it pertains to the pediatric population, and discuss future opportunities for health policy implementation.

Abstract
PURPOSE The purpose of this study was to explore the association between respiratory symptoms among U.S. adolescents who were current (past 30-day) users of cigarettes, e-cigarettes, and/or cannabis, as well as lifetime users of cannabis with electronic nicotine delivery systems (ENDS). METHODS Wave 4 from a national probability sample (N = 14,798) of adolescents (12-17 years) using Population Assessment of Tobacco and Health Study data was used for this study. Retention rate was 88.4%. RESULTS The odds of indicating "wheezing or whistling" in the chest were roughly two times higher among those who had used cannabis in ENDS (adjusted odds ratio 1.81, 95% confidence interval 1.47-2.22); neither e-cigarettes nor cigarettes had a significant association with all five respiratory symptoms in the fully adjusted models. CONCLUSIONS This study provides preliminary evidence that adolescents' cannabis use with ENDS may have negative health consequences. Lifetime cannabis use with ENDS was substantially associated with higher odds of respiratory symptoms.

Abstract
This study sought to determine whether adolescents' e-cigarette risk perceptions, perceived benefits, and positive expectations, and vaping behavior changed after the electronic-cigarette or vaping product use-associated lung injury (EVALI) outbreak. This longitudinal survey studied 1539 high school students in suburban Philadelphia, PA in 11th and 12th grade, before and after the outbreak of EVALI cases in 2019. Adolescents who reported current nicotine vaping at baseline (versus those who did not) had a greater increase in risk perceptions (B = -0.31, p = 0.04) and a greater decrease in positive expectations (B = -1.30, p = 0.003) at follow-up. Adolescents who reported current marijuana vaping at baseline (versus those who did not) had greater perceived benefits (B = 2.19, p < 0.001), lower risk perceptions (B = 0.39, p < 0.001), and greater positive expectations of e-cigarette use (B = 1.43, p < 0.001) across time. Odds of current nicotine vaping at follow-up increased (OR = 1.61, 95% CI = 1.08, 2.41) for adolescents who maintained lower risk perceptions. Odds of current nicotine vaping at follow-up decreased (OR = 0.33, 95% CI = 0.21, 0.50) for adolescents whose positive expectations of e-cigarette use decreased. The odds of current marijuana vaping at follow-up decreased (OR = 0.64, 95% CI = 0.42, 0.98) for adolescents whose positive expectations of e-cigarette use decreased. Perceptions of the risks of e-cigarette use increased and positive expectations of e-cigarette use decreased after the EVALI outbreak. Adolescent risk perceptions and positive expectations of e-cigarette use are two potential targets to impact vaping behavior. Emphasizing the risks of e-cigarette use while decreasing positive expectations of use have the potential to reduce vaping behavior, and perhaps subsequent EVALI cases.

Abstract
INTRODUCTION Young adults' e-cigarette use is associated with perceptions that e-cigarettes are less harmful or addictive than cigarettes, socially acceptable, and appealing. This study developed and tested vaping educational messages addressing these factors: 1) Harm Perceptions, 2) Addictiveness, 3) Social Use, and 4) Flavors. METHODS Two message trials were conducted in U.S. Amazon Mechanical Turk workers aged 18-24 using a 2 (content: addiction, harm) × 3 (theme: alone, + flavors, + social) design with multiple messages in each of the six categories. Participants were assigned to view a random subset of messages and report on likeability and perceived message effectiveness (PME). Phase 1 (n = 200) tested 33 messages and 32 images. Phase 2 (n = 769) tested combinations of Phase 1's 24 most effective messages with 6 images rated most likeable or effective. Linear mixed effects models assessed the effect of content, theme, image, and their interactions on message response. RESULTS In both trials, most participants were past 30-day tobacco users. Harm content messages produced higher PME ratings than addiction content messages, and flavor theme messages were correlated with higher likeability scores than "content alone" theme messages. In Phase 2, flavor and social message themes decreased the PME of harm messages. There was no effect of images on either outcome controlling for the independent or interaction effects of content, theme, and image. CONCLUSIONS Messages conveying the harms of vaping may be best for reducing vaping in young adult tobacco users; flavor and social themes may diminish their effectiveness.

Abstract
In this review, we discuss recent publications on asthma and review the studies that have reported on the different aspects of the prevalence, risk factors and prevention, mechanisms, diagnosis, and treatment of asthma. Many risk and protective factors and molecular mechanisms are involved in the development of asthma. Emerging concepts and challenges in implementing the exposome paradigm and its application in allergic diseases and asthma are reviewed, including genetic and epigenetic factors, microbial dysbiosis, and environmental exposure, particularly to indoor and outdoor substances. The most relevant experimental studies further advancing the understanding of molecular and immune mechanisms with potential new targets for the development of therapeutics are discussed. A reliable diagnosis of asthma, disease endotyping, and monitoring its severity are of great importance in the management of asthma. Correct evaluation and management of asthma comorbidity/multimorbidity, including interaction with asthma phenotypes and its value for the precision medicine approach and validation of predictive biomarkers, are further detailed. Novel approaches and strategies in asthma treatment linked to mechanisms and endotypes of asthma, particularly biologicals, are critically appraised. Finally, due to the recent pandemics and its impact on patient management, we discuss the challenges, relationships, and molecular mechanisms between asthma, allergies, SARS-CoV-2, and COVID-19.

Abstract
A 15-year-old male with a history of mild intermittent asthma presented with fatigue, coughing, vomiting and anorexia which was progressive in nature over the past month. The patient was found to have evolving chest x-ray infiltrates bilaterally, and hypoxemia without accessory muscle use. The patient was placed on non-invasive continuous positive airway pressure (CPAP) for hypoxemia. A CT scan showed bilateral infiltrates in a pattern consistent with E-cigarette or Vaping product use-Associated Lung Injury (EVALI). Upon further history taking, the patient admitted to electronic cigarette (e-cigarette) use with a new tetrahydrocannabinol (THC) cartridge prior to the onset of symptoms. The patient was started on methylprednisolone after which his oxygen requirement improved. This case highlights the need to continue to be diligent regarding the use of e-cigarettes in the pediatric population, and be aware of the constitutional symptoms that are associated with their use.
