Self-Powered Respiration Monitoring Enabled By a Triboelectric Nanogenerator

Contact-electro-catalytic CO2 reduction from ambient air

Traditional catalytic techniques often encounter obstacles in the search for sustainable solutions for converting CO2 into value-added products because of their high energy consumption and expensive catalysts. Here, we introduce a contact-electro-catalysis approach for CO2 reduction reaction, achieving a CO Faradaic efficiency of 96.24%. The contact-electro-catalysis is driven by a triboelectric nanogenerator consisting of electrospun polyvinylidene fluoride loaded with single Cu atoms-anchored polymeric carbon nitride (Cu-PCN) catalysts and quaternized cellulose nanofibers (CNF). Mechanistic investigation reveals that the single Cu atoms on Cu-PCN can effectively enrich electrons during contact electrification, facilitating electron transfer upon their contact with CO2 adsorbed on quaternized CNF. Furthermore, the strong adsorption of CO2 on quaternized CNF allows efficient CO2 capture at low concentrations, thus enabling the CO2 reduction reaction in the ambient air. Compared to the state-of-the-art air-based CO2 reduction technologies, contact-electro-catalysis achieves a superior CO yield of 33 μmol g-1 h-1. This technique provides a solution for reducing airborne CO2 emissions while advancing chemical sustainability strategy.

Self-powered triboelectric-responsive microneedles with controllable release of optogenetically engineered extracellular vesicles for intervertebral disc degeneration repair

Excessive exercise is an etiological factor of intervertebral disc degeneration (IVDD). Engineered extracellular vesicles (EVs) exhibit excellent therapeutic potential for disease-modifying treatments. Herein, we fabricate an exercise self-powered triboelectric-responsive microneedle (MN) assay with the sustainable release of optogenetically engineered EVs for IVDD repair. Mechanically, exercise promotes cytosolic DNA sensing-mediated inflammatory activation in senescent nucleus pulposus (NP) cells (the master cell population for IVD homeostasis maintenance), which accelerates IVDD. TREX1 serves as a crucial nuclease, and disassembly of TRAM1-TREX1 complex disrupts the subcellular localization of TREX1, triggering TREX1-dependent genomic DNA damage during NP cell senescence. Optogenetically engineered EVs deliver TRAM1 protein into senescent NP cells, which effectively reconstructs the elimination function of TREX1. Triboelectric nanogenerator (TENG) harvests mechanical energy and triggers the controllable release of engineered EVs. Notably, an optogenetically engineered EV-based targeting treatment strategy is used for the treatment of IVDD, showing promising clinical potential for the treatment of degeneration-associated disorders.

Microneedle Patches-Integrated Transdermal Bioelectronics for Minimally Invasive Disease Theranostics

Wearable epidermal electronics with non- or minimally-invasive characteristics can collect, transduce, communicate, and interact with accessible physicochemical health indicators on the skin. However, due to the stratum corneum layer, rich information about body health is buried under the skin stratum corneum layer, for example, in the skin interstitial fluid. Microneedle patches are typically designed with arrays of special microsized needles of length within 1000 µm. Such characteristics potentially enable the access and sample of biomolecules under the skin or give therapeutical treatment painlessly and transdermally. Integrating microneedle patches with various electronics allows highly efficient transdermal bioelectronics, showing their great promise for biomedical and healthcare applications. This comprehensive review summarizes and highlights the recent progress on integrated transdermal bioelectronics based on microneedle patches. The design criteria and state-of-the-art fabrication techniques for such devices are initially discussed. Next, devices with different functions, including but not limited to health monitoring, drug delivery, and therapeutical treatment, are highlighted in detail. Finally, key issues associated with current technologies and future opportunities are elaborated to sort out the state of recent research, point out potential bottlenecks, and provide future research directions.

Acoustically Enhanced Triboelectric Stethoscope for Ultrasensitive Cardiac Sounds Sensing and Disease Diagnosis

Electronic stethoscope used to detect cardiac sounds that contain essential clinical information is a primary tool for diagnosis of various cardiac disorders. However, the linear electromechanical constitutive relation makes conventional piezoelectric sensors rather ineffective to detect low-intensity, low-frequency heart acoustic signal without the assistance of complex filtering and amplification circuits. Herein, it is found that triboelectric sensor features superior advantages over piezoelectric one for microquantity sensing originated from the fast saturated constitutive characteristic. As a result, the triboelectric sensor shows ultrahigh sensitivity (1215 mV Pa-1) than the piezoelectric counterpart (21 mV Pa-1) in the sound pressure range of 50-80 dB under the same testing condition. By designing a trumpet-shaped auscultatory cavity with a power function cross-section to achieve acoustic energy converging and impedance matching, triboelectric stethoscope delivers 36 dB signal-to-noise ratio for human test (2.3 times of that for piezoelectric one). Further combining with machine learning, five cardiac states can be diagnosed at 97% accuracy. In general, the triboelectric sensor is distinctly unique in basic mechanism, provides a novel design concept for sensing micromechanical quantities, and presents significant potential for application in cardiac sounds sensing and disease diagnosis.

Emerging Trends of Nanofibrous Piezoelectric and Triboelectric Applications: Mechanisms, Electroactive Materials, and Designed Architectures

Over the past few decades, significant progress in piezo-/triboelectric nanogenerators (PTEGs) has led to the development of cutting-edge wearable technologies. Nanofibers with good designability, controllable morphologies, large specific areas, and unique physicochemical properties provide a promising platform for PTEGs for various advanced applications. However, the further development of nanofiber-based PTEGs is limited by technical difficulties, ranging from materials design to device integration. Herein, the current developments in PTEGs based on electrospun nanofibers are systematically reviewed. This review begins with the mechanisms of PTEGs and the advantages of nanofibers and nanodevices, including high breathability, waterproofness, scalability, and thermal-moisture comfort. In terms of materials and structural design, novel electroactive nanofibers and structure assemblies based on 1D micro/nanostructures, 2D bionic structures, and 3D multilayered structures are discussed. Subsequently, nanofibrous PTEGs in applications such as energy harvesters, personalized medicine, personal protective equipment, and human-machine interactions are summarized. Nanofiber-based PTEGs still face many challenges such as energy efficiency, material durability, device stability, and device integration. Finally, the research gap between research and practical applications of PTEGs is discussed, and emerging trends are proposed, providing some ideas for the development of intelligent wearables.

Self-Powered Hybrid Motion and Health Sensing System Based on Triboelectric Nanogenerators

Triboelectric nanogenerator (TENG) represents an effective approach for the conversion of mechanical energy into electrical energy and has been explored to combine multiple technologies in past years. Self-powered sensors are not only free from the constraints of mechanical energy in the environment but also capable of efficiently harvesting ambient energy to sustain continuous operation. In this review, the remarkable development of TENG-based human body sensing achieved in recent years is presented, with a specific focus on human health sensing solutions, such as body motion and physiological signal detection. The movements originating from different parts of the body, such as body, touch, sound, and eyes, are systematically classified, and a thorough review of sensor structures and materials is conducted. Physiological signal sensors are categorized into non-implantable and implantable biomedical sensors for discussion. Suggestions for future applications of TENG-based biomedical sensors are also indicated, highlighting the associated challenges.

Recent Advances in Self-Powered Tactile Sensing for Wearable Electronics

With the arrival of the Internet of Things era, the demand for tactile sensors continues to grow. However, traditional sensors mostly require an external power supply to meet real-time monitoring, which brings many drawbacks such as short service life, environmental pollution, and difficulty in replacement, which greatly limits their practical applications. Therefore, the development of a passive self-power supply of tactile sensors has become a research hotspot in academia and the industry. In this review, the development of self-powered tactile sensors in the past several years is introduced and discussed. First, the sensing principle of self-powered tactile sensors is introduced. After that, the main performance parameters of the tactile sensors are briefly discussed. Finally, the potential application prospects of the tactile sensors are discussed in detail.

Hydrophobic functionalization of a metal-organic framework as an ammonia visual sensing material under high humidity conditions

Since exhaled ammonia (NH3) is one of the metabolic markers of liver and kidney diseases, ammonia visual sensing materials in humid environments have received extensive attention and investigation. Herein, through a tailor-made pore environment provided by metal-organic framework (MOF) materials (CH3-Cu(BDC)), we achieved NH3 anti-interference sensing with apparent color changing under humid conditions. With methyl (CH3-) functionalization, CH3-Cu(BDC) demonstrated a strong response for trace ammonia and showed high selectivity under a humid environment. Grand canonical Monte Carlo (GCMC) simulations indicated that CH3-Cu(BDC) showed stronger attraction towards NH3 molecules than H2O. Benefiting from the target changing coordination environment, CH3-Cu(BDC) showed a rapid response and simple analysis properties for patients' exhaled air. The strategy used in this study not only provides a demonstration case for NH3 colorimetric sensing with high humidity and anti-interference but also introduces a new method for painless and quick exhaled breath analysis for diagnosis of patients with kidney and liver diseases.

Tribo-charge enhanced and cellulose based biodegradable nanofibrous membranes with highly fluffy structure for air filtration and self-powered respiration monitoring systems

Recently, the demand for healthcare products especially wearable smart masks is increasing. The biosafety and degradability of smart masks are crucial for human health and environmental protection. However, the development of biodegradable and biocompatible fibrous membranes with high filtration efficiency and low pressure drop is still a challenge. How to realize the collaborative improvement between air filtration efficiency and pressure drop of the nanofibrous membrane is still a challenge. Here, a tribo-charge enhanced and biodegradable nanofibrous membranes (TCB NFMs) with highly fluffy structure for air filtration and self-powered respiration monitoring systems is reported for the first time. The filtration efficiency and pressure drop of the prepared membranes for 0.3 µm NaCl particulates is 99.971% and 41.67 Pa. The TCB NFMs based smart mask possesses a series of satisfactory and excellent characteristics, such as self-powered, biodegradable, biocompatible, high filtration efficiency, and low pressure drop, which is highly promising for application in air filtration systems and intelligent wearable respiration monitoring systems.

A Self-Powered Lactate Sensor Based on the Piezoelectric Effect for Assessing Tumor Development

The build-up of lactate in solid tumors stands as a crucial and early occurrence in malignancy development, and the concentration of lactate in the tumor microenvironment may be a more sensitive indicator for analyzing primary tumors. In this study, we designed a self-powered lactate sensor for the rapid analysis of tumor samples, utilizing the coupling between the piezoelectric effect and enzymatic reaction. This lactate sensor is fabricated using a ZnO nanowire array modified with lactate oxidase (LOx). The sensing process does not require an external power source or batteries. The device can directly output electric signals containing lactate concentration information when subjected to external forces. The lactate concentration detection upper limit of the sensor is at least 27 mM, with a limit of detection (LOD) of approximately 1.3 mM and a response time of around 10 s. This study innovatively applied self-powered technology to the in situ detection of the tumor microenvironment and used the results to estimate the growth period of the primary tumor. The availability of this application has been confirmed through biological experiments. Furthermore, the sensor data generated by the device offer valuable insights for evaluating the likelihood of remote tumor metastasis. This study may expand the research scope of self-powered technology in the field of medical diagnosis and offer a novel perspective on cancer diagnosis.

A Soft Bioelectronic Patch for Simultaneous Respiratory and Cardiovascular Monitoring

Sleep is critical to maintaining physical and mental health. Measuring physiological parameters to quantify sleep quality without uncomfortable user experience remains highly desired but a challenge. Here, this work develops a soft bioelectronic patch to perform simultaneous respiration and cardiovascular monitoring during sleep in a wearable and non-invasive manner. The soft bioelectronic patch system is mainly composed of a pressure sensor, a flexible printed circuit for signal processing, and a soft thermoplastic urethane mold for assembling different functional modules. The soft bioelectronic patch holds a sensitivity of >0.12 V kPa-1 and a remarkable low-frequency response from 0.5 to 15 Hz. It is demonstrated to continuously monitor respiration and heartbeat during the whole night, which could be harnessed for sleep monitoring and obstructive sleep apnea-hypopnea syndrome diagnosis. The reported soft bioelectronic patch represents a simple and convenient platform technology for sleep study.

Crosstalk-free graphene-liquid elastomer based printed sensors for unobtrusive respiratory monitoring

Flexible strain sensors have garnered attraction in the human healthcare domain. However, caveats like crosstalk and noise associated with the output signal of such a sensor often limit the accuracy. Hence, developing a strain sensor via frugal engineering is critical, thereby warranting its mass utility. A stencil printable graphene/liquid elastomeric crosstalk-free strain sensor for unobtrusive respiratory monitoring is reported herein. Printing supports the frugality of the process and avoids complex fabrication. The sensor was mounted on a wearable mask, and the sensor console was fabricated. The console demonstrated the capability to detect the respiratory profile at room and low temperature (-26 °C) with an SNR of -12.85 dB. Developed sensors could nullify the impact of temperature and humidity and generate respiratory signals due to strain induced by breathing. A model experiment was conducted to support the fidelity of the strain mechanism. The console demonstrated excellent stability (over 500 cycles) with a sensitivity of -196.56 (0-0.17% strain) and 117.49 (0.17-0.34% strain). The console could accurately determine conditions like eupnea, tachypnoea, etc., and transmit the data wirelessly via Bluetooth. These findings solve major caveats in flexible sensor development by focusing on selectivity, sensitivity, and stability.

Triboelectric Nanogenerators for Preventive Health Monitoring

With the improvement in life quality, the increased focus on health has expedited the rapid development of portable preventative-health-monitoring devices. As one of the most attractive sensing technologies, triboelectric nanogenerators (TENGs) are playing a more and more important role in wearable electronics, machinery condition monitoring, and Internet of Things (IoT) sensors. TENGs possess many advantages, such as ease of fabrication, cost-effectiveness, flexibility, material-selection variety, and the ability to collect low-frequency motion, offering a novel way to achieve health monitoring for human beings in various aspects. In this short review, we initially present the working modes of TENGs based on their applications in health monitoring. Subsequently, the applications of TENG-based preventive health monitoring are demonstrated for different abnormal conditions of human beings, including fall-down detection, respiration monitoring, fatigue monitoring, and arterial pulse monitoring for cardiovascular disease. Finally, the discussion summarizes the current limitations and future perspectives. This short review encapsulates the latest and most influential works on preventive health monitoring utilizing the triboelectric effect for human beings and provides hints and evidence for future research trends.

Flexible Metasurfaces for Multifunctional Interfaces

Optical metasurfaces, capable of manipulating the properties of light with a thickness at the subwavelength scale, have been the subject of extensive investigation in recent decades. This research has been mainly driven by their potential to overcome the limitations of traditional, bulky optical devices. However, most existing optical metasurfaces are confined to planar and rigid designs, functions, and technologies, which greatly impede their evolution toward practical applications that often involve complex surfaces. The disconnect between two-dimensional (2D) planar structures and three-dimensional (3D) curved surfaces is becoming increasingly pronounced. In the past two decades, the emergence of flexible electronics has ushered in an emerging era for metasurfaces. This review delves into this cutting-edge field, with a focus on both flexible and conformal design and fabrication techniques. Initially, we reflect on the milestones and trajectories in modern research of optical metasurfaces, complemented by a brief overview of their theoretical underpinnings and primary classifications. We then showcase four advanced applications of optical metasurfaces, emphasizing their promising prospects and relevance in areas such as imaging, biosensing, cloaking, and multifunctionality. Subsequently, we explore three key trends in optical metasurfaces, including mechanically reconfigurable metasurfaces, digitally controlled metasurfaces, and conformal metasurfaces. Finally, we summarize our insights on the ongoing challenges and opportunities in this field.

Self-powered triboelectric nanogenerator sensor for detecting humidity level and monitoring ethanol variation in a simulated exhalation environment

Respiration stands as a vital process reflecting physiological and pathological human health status. Exhaled breath analysis offers a facile, non-invasive, swift, and cost-effective approach for diagnosing and monitoring diseases by detecting concentration changes of specific biomarkers. In this study, we employed Polyethylene oxide/copper (I) oxide composite nanofibers (PCNFs), synthesized via the electrospinning method as the sensing material to measure ethanol levels (1-200 ppm) in an exhaled breath simulator environment. The integrated contact-separation triboelectric nanogenerator was utilized to power the self-powered PCNFs exhaled breath sensor. The PCNFs-based gas sensor demonstrates promising results with values of 0.9 and 3.2 for detecting 5 ppm and 200 ppm ethanol, respectively, in the presence of interfering gas at 90% relative humidity (RH). Notably, the sensor displayed remarkable ethanol selectivity, with ratios of 10:1 to methanol and 25:1 to acetone. Response and recovery times for 200 ppm ethanol at 90 RH% were rapid, at 2.7 s and 5.8 s, respectively. The PCNFs-based exhaled breath sensor demonstrated consistent and stable performance in practical conditions, showcasing its potential for integration into wearable devices. This self-powered breath sensor enabling continuous monitoring of lung cancer symptoms and facilitating compliance checks with legal alcohol consumption limits.

Construction of Triboelectric Series and Chirality Detection of Amino Acids Using Triboelectric Nanogenerator

Triboelectrification necessitates a frictional interaction between two materials, and their contact electrification is characteristically based on the polarity variance in the triboelectric series. Utilizing this fundamental advantage of the triboelectric phenomenon, different materials can be identified according to their contact electrification capability. Herein, an in-depth analysis of the amino acids present in the stratum corneum of human skin is performed and these are quantified regarding triboelectric polarization. The principal focus of this study lies in analyzing and identifying the amino acids present in copious amounts in the stratum corneum to explain their positive behavior during the contact electrification process. Thus, an augmented triboelectric series of amino acids with quantified triboelectric charging polarity by scrutinizing the transfer charge, work function, and atomic percentage is presented. Furthermore, the chirality of aspartic acid as it is most susceptible to racemization with clear consequences on the human skin is detected. The study is expected to accelerate research exploiting triboelectrification and provide valuable information on the surface properties and biological activities of these important biomolecules.

A Triboelectric Sensor with Double Bubble Structure Applied in a High Security Double Lock System

With more attention on personal privacy and the need for a security defense, it is necessary to design an intelligent lock system with a higher security performance. Here, a novel high security double lock system integrating triboelectric nanogenerators (TENGs) with a double bubble structure (DB-TENG) and deep learning models is proposed. The TENG as a self-powered sensor is developed using silicone rubber and copper foil. By optimizing the thickness of the top layer film, surface microstructure, the size of the air bubble, and design of the double bubble structure, the sensitivity of the DB-TENG reaches 19.08 V/kPa. For the feasibility study, the sensor is fabricated to a smart belt to collect respiratory behaviors as a respiratory code. A Long Short-Term Memory network is adopted to identify four typical respiratory signals with an average accuracy of 97.00%. The system is deployed on a Raspberry Pi to determine whether the user is permitted through both the collected respiratory code and the related face image and will send an alarm message if one of the two does not match. It is worth mentioning that users can send alarm signals undiscovered by controlling their respiratory signals. Therefore, the proposed system has superb potential in security demanding environments.

3D Printed Conformal Strain and Humidity Sensors for Human Motion Prediction and Health Monitoring via Machine Learning

Wearable sensors have garnered considerable attention due to their flexibility and lightweight characteristics in the realm of healthcare applications. However, developing robust wearable sensors with facile fabrication and good conformity remains a challenge. In this study, a conductive graphene nanoplate-carbon nanotube (GC) ink is synthesized for multi jet fusion (MJF) printing. The layer-by-layer fabrication process of MJF not only improves the mechanical and flame-retardant properties of the printed GC sensor but also bolsters its robustness and sensitivity. The direction of sensor bending significantly impacts the relative resistance changes, allowing for precise investigations of joint motions in the human body, such as those of the fingers, wrists, elbows, necks, and knees. Furthermore, the data of resistance changes collected by the GC sensor are utilized to train a support vector machine with a 95.83% accuracy rate for predicting human motions. Due to its stable humidity sensitivity, the sensor also demonstrates excellent performance in monitoring human breath and predicting breath modes (normal, fast, and deep breath), thereby expanding its potential applications in healthcare. This work opens up new avenues for using MJF-printed wearable sensors for a variety of healthcare applications.

Recent Advances in Functional Fiber-Based Wearable Triboelectric Nanogenerators

The quality of human life has improved thanks to the rapid development of wearable electronics. Previously, bulk structures were usually selected for the fabrication of high performance electronics, but these are not suitable for wearable electronics due to mobility limitations and comfortability. Fibrous material-based triboelectric nanogenerators (TENGs) can provide power to wearable electronics due to their advantages such as light weight, flexibility, stretchability, wearability, etc. In this work, various fiber materials, multiple fabrication methods, and fundamentals of TENGs are described. Moreover, recent advances in functional fiber-based wearable TENGs are introduced. Furthermore, the challenges to functional fiber-based TENGs are discussed, and possible solutions are suggested. Finally, the use of TENGs in hybrid devices is introduced for a broader introduction of fiber-based energy harvesting technologies.

Target-Driven Z-Scheme Heterojunction Formation for ppb H2S Detection from Exhaled Breath at Room Temperature

As a biomarker of periodontitis, sensitive and timely monitoring of hydrogen sulfide (H2S) in exhaled breath at room temperature (RT) is important for the early intervention of oral diseases. However, the required high operation temperature to achieve high sensitivity is still a technical challenge for directly monitoring exhaled breath. In this study, by integrating metal-organic frameworks (MOFs) into self-aligned TiO2 nanotube arrays (NTs), a chemiresistor gas sensor with outstanding sensitivity and selectivity was constructed for the detection of H2S at RT. The precise regulation of a Co(III)-based MOF CoBDC-NH2 (BDC-NH2 = 2-aminoterephthalic acid) not only induced more active surface for the preconcentration of the target gas but also caused a buildup of Z-scheme heterojunctions in the H2S atmosphere that induced an ultrahigh sensitivity at RT via 365 nm light-emitting diode irradiation. The response and recovery times decreased to ∼50 and ∼28%, respectively, when this system was exposed to UV light. The sensing chips based on the as-prepared TiO2/CoBDC-NH2 NTs exhibited the highest-ranking H2S sensing performance, i.e., a limit of detection of 1.3 ppb and excellent selectivity even to 100 times high concentration of interference gases, owing to the synergistic chemical environment provided by NH2-functionalized Co-MOFs and abundant photogenerated electrons provided by Z-scheme heterojunctions. This sensing chip was also used in a practical application for the timely monitoring of halitosis from direct exhaled breath. This study provides a reliable and sensitive design for clinically aiding the timely detection of H2S in a complex oral environment.

Recent Advances in Triboelectric Nanogenerators: From Technological Progress to Commercial Applications

Serious climate changes and energy-related environmental problems are currently critical issues in the world. In order to reduce carbon emissions and save our environment, renewable energy harvesting technologies will serve as a key solution in the near future. Among them, triboelectric nanogenerators (TENGs), which is one of the most promising mechanical energy harvesters by means of contact electrification phenomenon, are explosively developing due to abundant wasting mechanical energy sources and a number of superior advantages in a wide availability and selection of materials, relatively simple device configurations, and low-cost processing. Significant experimental and theoretical efforts have been achieved toward understanding fundamental behaviors and a wide range of demonstrations since its report in 2012. As a result, considerable technological advancement has been exhibited and it advances the timeline of achievement in the proposed roadmap. Now, the technology has reached the stage of prototype development with verification of performance beyond the lab scale environment toward its commercialization. In this review, distinguished authors in the world worked together to summarize the state of the art in theory, materials, devices, systems, circuits, and applications in TENG fields. The great research achievements of researchers in this field around the world over the past decade are expected to play a major role in coming to fruition of unexpectedly accelerated technological advances over the next decade.

Advances in Wearable Piezoelectric Sensors for Hazardous Workplace Environments

Recent advances in wearable energy harvesting technology as solutions to occupational health and safety programs are presented. Workers are often exposed to harmful conditions-especially in the mining and construction industries-where chronic health issues can emerge over time. While wearable sensors technology can aid in early detection and long-term exposure tracking, powering them and the associated risks are often an impediment for their widespread use, such as the need for frequent charging and battery safety. Repetitive vibration exposure is one such hazard, e.g., whole body vibration, yet it can also provide parasitic energy that can be harvested to power wearable sensors and overcome the battery limitations. This review can critically analyze the vibration effect on workers' health, the limitations of currently available devices, explore new options for powering different personal protective equipment devices, and discuss opportunities and directions for future research. The recent progress in self-powered vibration sensors and systems from the perspective of the underlying materials, applications, and fabrication techniques is reviewed. Lastly, the challenges and perspectives are discussed for reference to the researchers who are interested in self-powered vibration sensors.

Flexible Humidity Sensor with High Sensitivity and Durability for Respiratory Monitoring Using Near-Field Electrohydrodynamic Direct-Writing Method

The humidity of breath can serve as an important health indicator, providing crucial clinical information about human physiology. Significant progress had been made in the development of flexible humidity sensors. However, improving its humidity sensing performance (sensitivity and durability) is still facing many challenges. In this work, near-field electrohydrodynamic direct writing (NFEDW) was proposed to fabricate humidity sensors with high sensitivity and durability for respiration monitoring. Due to the applied electric field, dense carbon nanotube/cellulose nanofiber (CNT/CNF) networks formed during the printing process that enhance the sensitivity of the sensor. The prepared sensor showed excellent humidity responses, with a maximum response value of 61.5% (ΔR/R₀) at 95% relative humidity (RH). Additionally, the sensitivity film prepared by the NFEDW method closely fits the poly(ethylene terephthalate) (PET) substrate, endowing the sensor with outstanding bending (with a maximum curvature of 4.7 cm^-1) and folding durability (up to 50 times). The sensitivity of the prepared sensor under different simulated conditions, namely, nose breathing, mouth breathing, coughing, yawning, breath holding, and speaking, was excellent, demonstrating the potential of the sensor for the real-time monitoring of human breath humidity. Thus, the high-performance flexible humidity sensor is suitable for human respiration and health monitoring.

A Mousepad Triboelectric-Piezoelectric Hybrid Nanogenerator (TPHNG) for Self-Powered Computer User Behavior Monitoring Sensors and Biomechanical Energy Harvesting

Hybrid nanogenerators based on the principle of surface charging of functional films are significant in self-powering sensing and energy conversion devices due to their multiple functions and high conversion efficiency, although applications remain limited due to a lack of suitable materials and structures. Here, we investigate a triboelectric-piezoelectric hybrid nanogenerator (TPHNG) in the form of a mousepad for computer user behavior monitoring and energy harvesting. Triboelectric and piezoelectric nanogenerators with different functional films and structures work independently to detect sliding and pressing movements, and the profitable coupling between the two nanogenerators leads to enhanced device outputs/sensitivity. Different mouse operations such as clicking, scrolling, taking-up/putting-down, sliding, moving rate, and pathing can be detected by the device via distinguishable patterns of voltage ranging from 0.6 to 36 V. Based on operation recognition, human behavior monitoring is realized, with monitoring of tasks such as browsing a document and playing a computer game being successfully demonstrated. Energy harvesting from mouse sliding, patting, and bending of the device is realized with output voltages up to 37 V and power up to 48 μW while exhibiting good durability up to 20,000 cycles. This work presents a TPHNG utilizing surface charging for self-powered human behavior sensing and biomechanical energy harvesting.

Functionalized Hydrogel-Based Wearable Gas and Humidity Sensors

Breathing is an inherent human activity; however, the composition of the air we inhale and gas exhale remains unknown to us. To address this, wearable vapor sensors can help people monitor air composition in real time to avoid underlying risks, and for the early detection and treatment of diseases for home healthcare. Hydrogels with three-dimensional polymer networks and large amounts of water molecules are naturally flexible and stretchable. Functionalized hydrogels are intrinsically conductive, self-healing, self-adhesive, biocompatible, and room-temperature sensitive. Compared with traditional rigid vapor sensors, hydrogel-based gas and humidity sensors can directly fit human skin or clothing, and are more suitable for real-time monitoring of personal health and safety. In this review, current studies on hydrogel-based vapor sensors are investigated. The required properties and optimization methods of wearable hydrogel-based sensors are introduced. Subsequently, existing reports on the response mechanisms of hydrogel-based gas and humidity sensors are summarized. Related works on hydrogel-based vapor sensors for their application in personal health and safety monitoring are presented. Moreover, the potential of hydrogels in the field of vapor sensing is elucidated. Finally, the current research status, challenges, and future trends of hydrogel gas/humidity sensing are discussed.

Paper-Based Humidity Sensors as Promising Flexible Devices, State of the Art, Part 2: Humidity-Sensor Performances

This review article covers all types of paper-based humidity sensor, such as capacitive, resistive, impedance, fiber-optic, mass-sensitive, microwave, and RFID (radio-frequency identification) humidity sensors. The parameters of these sensors and the materials involved in their research and development, such as carbon nanotubes, graphene, semiconductors, and polymers, are comprehensively detailed, with a special focus on the advantages/disadvantages from an application perspective. Numerous technological/design approaches to the optimization of the performances of the sensors are considered, along with some non-conventional approaches. The review ends with a detailed analysis of the current problems encountered in the development of paper-based humidity sensors, supported by some solutions.

Advanced and Smart Textiles during and after the COVID-19 Pandemic: Issues, Challenges, and Innovations

The COVID-19 pandemic has hugely affected the textile and apparel industry. Besides the negative impact due to supply chain disruptions, drop in demand, liquidity problems, and overstocking, this pandemic was found to be a window of opportunity since it accelerated the ongoing digitalization trends and the use of functional materials in the textile industry. This review paper covers the development of smart and advanced textiles that emerged as a response to the outbreak of SARS-CoV-2. We extensively cover the advancements in developing smart textiles that enable monitoring and sensing through electrospun nanofibers and nanogenerators. Additionally, we focus on improving medical textiles mainly through enhanced antiviral capabilities, which play a crucial role in pandemic prevention, protection, and control. We summarize the challenges that arise from personal protective equipment (PPE) disposal and finally give an overview of new smart textile-based products that emerged in the markets related to the control and spread reduction of SARS-CoV-2.

Fabrication and Analysis of Microcapsule Electrets with a Tunable Flexoelectric-like Response

The electret has drawn considerable attention as an emerging flexible energy collector. In this work, a charged microcapsule is designed which can provide a stable storage space for electric charge in the electret. The flexoelectric-like response is achieved by embedding a layer of charged microcapsules in the middle plane of the flexible polymer to form an electret. The results of Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy and energy-dispersive X-ray spectroscopy verified the successful preparation of microcapsules. Zeta potential analysis showed the negative electrical properties of the microcapsules. The prepared microcapsule electret has a significant flexoelectric effect under loading conditions. This work presents a preliminary theoretical study of the microcapsule electret to optimize the output characteristics of the electret by varying the parameters, including the number of microcapsules, the size of the electret, and the external load. Good agreement was achieved with the experimental results, which verified the validity of the theoretical study. This work provides a new method for preparing electret and further promotes its application in electromechanical transducers.

All-Fabric Triboelectric Nanogenerator (AF-TENG) Smart Face Mask: Remote Long-Rate Breathing Monitoring and Apnea Alarm

Since the beginning of the COVID-19 pandemic, the use of face masks has become not only mandatory in several countries but also an acceptable approach for combating the pandemic. In the quest for designing an effective and useful face mask, triboelectric nanogenerators (TENGs) have been recently proposed. Novel functionalities are provided with the use of TENGs in face masks due to the induced triboelectrification generated by the exhaled and inhaled breath, allowing their use as an energy sensor. Nonetheless, within the face mask, the presence of nontextile plastics or other common triboelectric (TE) materials can be undesired. Herein, we propose the use of an all-fabric TENG (AF-TENG) with the use of high molecular weight polyethylene (UHMWPE) and cotton fabric as negative and positive triboelectric layers, respectively. With these materials, it is possible to detect the breathing of the patient, which in the case of not detecting a signal over a few minutes can trigger an alarm locally, providing valuable time. Also, in this article, we have sent breathing signals locally and remotely to distances up to 20 km via Wi-Fi and LoRa, the same as warning signals in the case of detecting anomalies. This work reveals the use of TENGs in smart face masks as an important tool to be used in difficult epidemiological periods to the general public, bringing much more comfort and relaxation to patients and elderly in today's society, and based on pristine eco-friendly materials.

Biophysical Sensors Based on Triboelectric Nanogenerators

Triboelectric nanogenerators (TENGs) can not only collect mechanical energy around or inside the human body and convert it into electricity but also help monitor our body and the world by providing interpretable electrical signals during energy conversion, thus emerging as an innovative medical solution for both daily health monitoring and clinical treatment and bringing great convenience. This review tries to introduce the latest technological progress of TENGs for applications in biophysical sensors, where a TENG functions as a either a sensor or a power source, and in some cases, as both parts of a self-powered sensor system. From this perspective, this review begins from the fundamental working principles and then concisely illustrates the recent progress of TENGs given structural design, surface modification, and materials selection toward output enhancement and medical application flexibility. After this, the medical applications of TENGs in respiratory status, cardiovascular disease, and human rehabilitation are covered in detail, in the form of either textile or implantable parts for pacemakers, nerve stimulators, and nerve prostheses. In addition, the application of TENGs in driving third-party medical treatment systems is introduced. Finally, shortcomings and challenges in TENG-based biophysical sensors are highlighted, aiming to provide deeper insight into TENG-based medical solutions for the development of TENG-based self-powered electronics with higher performance for practical applications.

Sensing-transducing coupled piezoelectric textiles for self-powered humidity detection and wearable biomonitoring

The performance of chemical sensors is dominated by the perception of the target molecules via sensitive materials and the conduction of sensing signals through transducers. However, sensing and transduction are spatially and temporally independent in most chemical sensors, which poses a challenge for device miniaturization and integration. Herein, we proposed a sensing-transducing coupled strategy by embedding the high piezoresponse Sm-PMN-PT ceramic (d₃₃ = ∼1500 pC N^-1) into a moisture-sensitive polyetherimide (PEI) polymer matrix via electrospinning to conjugate the humidity perception and signal transduction synchronously and sympatrically. Through phase-field simulation and experimental characterization, we reveal the principle of design of the composition and topological structure of sensing-transducing coupled piezoelectric (STP) textiles in order to modulate the recognition, conversion, and sensitive component utilization ratio of the prepared active humidity sensors, achieving high sensitivity (0.9%/RH%) and fast response (20 s) toward ambient moisture. The prepared STP textile can be worn on the human body to realize emotion recognition, exercise status monitoring, and physiological stress identification. This work offers unprecedented insights into the coupling mechanism between chemisorption-related interfacial state and energy conversion efficiency and opens up a new paradigm for developing autonomous, multifunctional and highly sensitive flexible chemical sensors.

Miniaturized retractable thin-film sensor for wearable multifunctional respiratory monitoring

As extremely important physiological indicators, respiratory signals can often reflect or predict the depth and urgency of various diseases. However, designing a wearable respiratory monitoring system with convenience, excellent durability, and high precision is still an urgent challenge. Here, we designed an easy-fabricate, lightweight, and badge reel-like retractable self-powered sensor (RSPS) with high precision, sensitivity, and durability for continuous detection of important indicators such as respiratory rate, apnea, and respiratory ventilation. By using three groups of interdigital electrode structures with phase differences, combined with flexible printed circuit boards (FPCBs) processing technology, a miniature rotating thin-film triboelectric nanogenerator (RTF-TENG) was developed. Based on discrete sensing technology, the RSPS has a sensing resolution of 0.13 mm, sensitivity of 7 P·mm-1, and durability more than 1 million stretching cycles, with low hysteresis and excellent anti-environmental interference ability. Additionally, to demonstrate its wearability, real-time, and convenience of respiratory monitoring, a multifunctional wearable respiratory monitoring system (MWRMS) was designed. The MWRMS demonstrated in this study is expected to provide a new and practical strategy and technology for daily human respiratory monitoring and clinical diagnosis.

Carbon Nanostructure Embedded Novel Sensor Implementation for Detection of Aromatic Volatile Organic Compounds: An Organized Review

For field-like environmental gas monitoring and noninvasive illness diagnostics, effective sensing materials with exceptional sensing capabilities of sensitive, quick detection of volatile organic compounds (VOCs) are required. Carbon-based nanomaterials (CNMs), like CNTs, graphene, carbon dots (Cdots), and others, have recently drawn a lot of interest for their future application as an elevated-performance sensor for the detection of VOCs. CNMs have a greater potential for developing selective sensors that target VOCs due to their tunable chemical and surface properties. Additionally, the mechanical versatility of CNMs enables the development of novel gas sensors and places them ahead of other sensing materials for wearable applications. An overview of the latest advancements in the study of CNM-based sensors is given in this comprehensive organized review.

Degradable MXene-Doped Polylactic Acid Textiles for Wearable Biomonitoring

Degradable wearable electronics offer a promising route to construct sustainable cities and reduced carbon society. However, the difficult functionalization and the poor stability of degradable sensitive materials dramatically restrict their application in personalized healthcare assessment. Herein, we developed a scalable, low-cost, and porosity degradable MXene-polylactic acid textile (DMPT) for on-body biomonitoring via electrospinning. A combination of polydimethylsiloxane templating and MXene flake impregnation methods endows the fabricated DMPT with a sensitivity of 5.37/kPa, a fast response time of 98 ms, and a good mechanical stability (over 6000 cycles). An efficient degradation of as-electrospun DMPTs was observed in 1 wt % sodium carbonate solution. It is found that the incorporation of MXene nanosheets boosts the hydrophilicity and degradation efficiency of active polylactic acid nanofibrous films in comparison with the pristine counterpart. Furthermore, the as-received DMPT demonstrates great capability in monitoring physiological activities of wrist pulse, knuckle bending, swallowing, and vocalization. This work opens up a new paradigm for developing and optimizing high-performance degradable on-body electronics.

A self-powered multifunctional dressing for active infection prevention and accelerated wound healing

Interruption of the wound healing process due to pathogenic infection remains a major health care challenge. The existing methods for wound management require power sources that hinder their utilization outside of clinical settings. Here, a next generation of wearable self-powered wound dressing is developed, which can be activated by diverse stimuli from the patient's body and provide on-demand treatment for both normal and infected wounds. The highly tunable dressing is composed of thermocatalytic bismuth telluride nanoplates (Bi₂Te₃ NPs) functionalized onto carbon fiber fabric electrodes and triggered by the surrounding temperature difference to controllably generate hydrogen peroxide to effectively inhibit bacterial growth at the wound site. The integrated electrodes are connected to a wearable triboelectric nanogenerator (TENG) to provide electrical stimulation for accelerated wound closure by enhancing cellular proliferation, migration, and angiogenesis. The reported self-powered dressing holds great potential in facilitating personalized and user-friendly wound care with improved healing outcomes.

Washable and Breathable Electret Sensors Based on a Hydro-Charging Technique for Smart Textiles

Flexible electromechanical sensors based on electret materials have shown great application potential in wearable electronics. However, achieving great breathability yet maintaining good washability is still a challenge for traditional electret sensors. Herein, we report a washable and breathable electret sensor based on a hydro-charging technique, namely, hydro-charged electret sensor (HCES). The melt-blown polypropylene (MBPP) electret fabric can be charged while washing with water. The surface potential of MBPP electret fabric can be improved by optimizing the type of water, water pressure, water temperature, drying temperature, drying time, ambient air pressure, and ambient relative humidity. It is proposed that the single fiber has charges of different polarities on the upper and lower surfaces due to contact electrification with water, thereby forming electric dipoles between fibers, which can lead to better surface potential stability than the traditional corona-charging method. The HCES can achieve a high air permeability of ∼215 mm/s and sensitivity up to ∼0.21 V/Pa, with output voltage remaining stable after over 36,000 working cycles and multiple times of water washing. As a demonstration example, the HCES is integrated into a chest strap to monitor human respiration conditions.

Progress and Perspectives of Single-Atom Catalysts for Gas Sensing

Single-atom catalysts (SACs) attract extensive attention in the field of heterogeneous catalysis in recent years due to the maximum atom utilization and unique physical and chemical properties. The gas sensing is actually a heterogeneous catalysis process but the SACs are new to this area. Although SACs show huge potential in gas sensing, the SACs gas sensing area currently is still at the infancy stage. This work critically reviews the recent advances and current status of single-atom gas sensing materials. General synthesis routes, characterization methods, and sensing performance indexes are introduced. At the end, the challenges and future prospects on SACs gas sensing are presented from the authors' perspectives. This work is anticipated to provide insights and guideline for the chemical sensing community.

A Self-Powered, Highly Embedded and Sensitive Tribo-Label-Sensor for the Fast and Stable Label Printer

Label-sensor is an essential component of the label printer which is becoming a most significant tool for the development of Internet of Things (IoT). However, some drawbacks of the traditional infrared label-sensor make the printer fail to realize the high-speed recognition of labels as well as stable printing. Herein, we propose a self-powered and highly sensitive tribo-label-sensor (TLS) for accurate label identification, positioning and counting by embedding triboelectric nanogenerator into the indispensable roller structure of a label printer. The sensing mechanism, device parameters and deep comparison with infrared sensor are systematically studied both in theory and experiment. As the results, TLS delivers 6 times higher signal magnitude than traditional one. Moreover, TLS is immune to label jitter and temperature variation during fast printing and can also be used for transparent label directly and shows long-term robustness. This work may provide an alternative toolkit with outstanding advantages to improve current label printer and further promote the development of IoT.

Surface-Embedded Liquid Metal Electrodes with Abrasion Resistance via Direct Magnetic Printing

Gallium-based liquid metals (LMs) featuring both high conductivity and fluidity are ideal conductors for soft and stretchable electronics. However, their liquid nature is a double-edged sword in many key applications since LMs are inherently prone to mechanical damage. Although additional encapsulation is frequently used for the protection of delicate LM electrodes, it hinders the electrical interfacing with other objects for interconnection, sensing, and stimulation. Here, different from conventional patterning methods that deposit LM on or inside substrates, we for the first time report a simple strategy to create surface-embedded LM of eutectic gallium-indium (EGaIn) circuits with mechanical damage endurance. This was achieved by using direct magnetic printing to overcome the high surface tension of LM, allowing it to be passively filled into the laser-patterned microgrooves on soft substrates. We show that the surface-embedded LM circuits are resistant to mechanical erasure, washing, and peeling. We also show the applications of our surface-embedded LM electrodes in respiration monitoring and electrical stimulation of nerves. This work provides a simple and efficient way to create mechanically reliable LM microelectrodes, holding great promise for wearable and implantable bioelectronics.

Power Generation by a Double-Sided Tape

A novel contact-separation triboelectric generator concept is proposed in this study, which is composed of a double-sided tape with acrylic adhesive material and a metalized polyester (PET/Al) film (an aluminum layer coating on one side). The proposed concept is very cost-effective and easy to fabricate compared to existing triboelectric nanogenerators (TENGs), which require special equipment and sophisticated procedure to build. The strong bonding nature of acrylic adhesive on the tape induces a significant charge when contacting. The peak power generation depends on the induced pressure at the impact. During the separation phase, the air breakdown between triboelectric layers allows most existing electrons to flow back from the ground due to rapid charge removal at the interface. A higher voltage can be generated when the PET is interfaced with the double-sided tape compared to the Al-acrylic configuration because of the effect of triboelectric series and a Schottky barrier formation for electrons at the tape-Al interface during contact. A double-electrode configuration with an assembly of Al/PET-tape-PET/Al significantly improved the performance, in which a 21.2 mW peak power is achieved compared to 7.6 mW in the single-electrode design with tape-PET/Al assembly when excited at 20 Hz in a shaker test. This double-electrode triboelectric generator can power 476 LEDs with an active area of 38 mm × 25 mm. Moreover, a direct power of a 650 nm laser diode was demonstrated. In summary, the proposed triboelectric generator concept using tacky materials shows the potential for higher-energy harvesting via triboelectrification and advances the state of the art by offering low cost and easy fabrication options. It is expected that such newly proposed triboelectric generators are able to meet power requirements in many engineering applications.

Wearable respiratory sensors for COVID-19 monitoring

Since its outbreak in 2019, COVID-19 becomes a pandemic, severely burdening the public healthcare systems and causing an economic burden. Thus, societies around the world are prioritizing a return to normal. However, fighting the recession could rekindle the pandemic owing to the lightning-fast transmission rate of SARS-CoV-2. Furthermore, many of those who are infected remain asymptomatic for several days, leading to the increased possibility of unintended transmission of the virus. Thus, developing rigorous and universal testing technologies to continuously detect COVID-19 for entire populations remains a critical challenge that needs to be overcome. Wearable respiratory sensors can monitor biomechanical signals such as the abnormities in respiratory rate and cough frequency caused by COVID-19, as well as biochemical signals such as viral biomarkers from exhaled breaths. The point-of-care system enabled by advanced respiratory sensors is expected to promote better control of the pandemic by providing an accessible, continuous, widespread, noninvasive, and reliable solution for COVID-19 diagnosis, monitoring, and management.

Temperature-Modulated Selective Detection of Part-per-Trillion NO2 Using Platinum Nanocluster Sensitized 3D Metal Oxide Nanotube Arrays

Semiconductor chemiresistive gas sensors play critical roles in a smart and sustainable city where a safe and healthy environment is the foundation. However, the poor limits of detection and selectivity are the two bottleneck issues limiting their broad applications. Herein, a unique sensor design with a 3D tin oxide (SnO₂ ) nanotube array as the sensing layer and platinum (Pt) nanocluster decoration as the catalytic layer, is demonstrated. The Pt/SnO₂ sensor significantly enhances the sensitivity and selectivity of NO₂ detection by strengthening the adsorption energy and lowering the activation energy toward NO₂ . It not only leads to ultrahigh sensitivity to NO₂ with a record limit of detection of 107 parts per trillion, but also enables selective NO₂ sensing while suppressing the responses to interfering gases. Furthermore, a wireless sensor system integrated with sensors, a microcontroller, and a Bluetooth unit is developed for the practical indoor and on-road NO₂ detection applications. The rational design of the sensors and their successful demonstration pave the way for future real-time gas monitoring in smart home and smart city applications.

Self-Powered Smart Gloves Based on Triboelectric Nanogenerators

The hands are used in all facets of daily life, from simple tasks such as grasping and holding to complex tasks such as communication and using technology. Finding a way to not only monitor hand movements and gestures but also to integrate that data with technology is thus a worthwhile task. Gesture recognition is particularly important for those who rely on sign language to communicate, but the limitations of current vision-based and sensor-based methods, including lack of portability, bulkiness, low sensitivity, highly expensive, and need for external power sources, among many others, make them impractical for daily use. To resolve these issues, smart gloves can be created using a triboelectric nanogenerator (TENG), a self-powered technology that functions based on the triboelectric effect and electrostatic induction and is also cheap to manufacture, small in size, lightweight, and highly flexible in terms of materials and design. In this review, an overview of the existing self-powered smart gloves will be provided based on TENGs, both for gesture recognition and human-machine interface, concluding with a discussion on the future outlook of these devices.

A Dual Sensing Platform for Human Exhaled Breath Enabled by Fe-MIL-101-NH2 Metal-Organic Frameworks and its Derived Co/Ni/Fe Trimetallic Oxides

Limited by the insufficient active sites and the interference from breath humidity, designing reliable gas sensing materials with high activity and moisture resistance remains a challenge to analyze human exhaled breath for the translational application of medical diagnostics. Herein, the dual sensing and cooperative diagnosis is achieved by utilizing metal-organic frameworks (MOFs) and its derivative. The Fe-MIL-101-NH₂ serves as the quartz crystal microbalance humidity sensing layer, which exhibits high selectivity and rapid response time (16 s/15 s) to water vapor. Then, the Co²⁺ and Ni²⁺ cations are further co-doped into Fe-MIL-101-NH₂ host to obtain the derived Co/Ni/Fe trimetallic  oxides (CoNiFe-MOS-n). The chemiresistive CoNiFe-MOS-n sensor displays the high sensitivity (560) and good selectivity to acetone, together with a lower original resistance compared with Fe₂ O₃ and NiFe₂ O₄ . Moreover, as a proof-of-concept application, synergistic integration of Fe-MIL-101-NH₂ and derived CoNiFe-MOS-n is carried out. The Fe-MIL-101-NH₂ is applied as moisture sorbent materials, which realize a sensitivity compensation of CoNiFe-MOS-n sensors for the detection of acetone (biomarker gas of diabetes). The findings provide an insight for effective utilization of MOFs and the derived materials to achieve a trace gas detection in exhaled breath analysis.

Fluid Field Modulation in Mass Transfer for Efficient Photocatalysis

Mass transfer is an essential factor determining photocatalytic performance, which can be modulated by fluid field via manipulating the kinetic characteristics of photocatalysts and photocatalytic intermediates. Past decades have witnessed the efforts and achievements made in manipulating mass transfer based on photocatalyst structure and composition design, and thus, a critical survey that scrutinizes the recent progress in this topic is urgently necessitated. This review examines the basic principles of how mass transfer behavior impacts photocatalytic activity accompanying with the discussion on theoretical simulation calculation including fluid flow speed and pattern. Meanwhile, newly emerged viable photocatalytic micro/nanomotors with self-thermophoresis, self-diffusiophoresis, and bubble-propulsion mechanisms as well as magnet-actuated photocatalytic artificial cilia for facilitating mass transfer will be covered. Furthermore, their applications in photocatalytic hydrogen evolution, carbon dioxide reduction, organic pollution degradation, bacteria disinfection and so forth are scrutinized. Finally, a brief summary and future outlook are presented, providing a viable guideline to those working in photocatalysis, mass transfer, and other related fields.

Porous Oxide-Functionalized Seaweed Fabric as a Flexible Breath Sensor for Noninvasive Nephropathy Diagnosis

Ever-increasing quality of life demands low-power and reliable gas-sensing technology for point-of-care monitoring of human health by relevant breath biomarkers. However, precise identification is rather challenging due to the relatively small concentration and an abundance of interferents. Herein, a breath sensor that can detect ppb-level ammonia is constructed based on a soft-hard interface design of biocompatible seaweed fabric and nanosheet-assembled bismuth oxide architectures after undergoing heat treatment. Benefiting from abundant defective sites and surface chemical state changes, the flexible sensor can work at room temperature and exhibits superior characteristics for ammonia detection, including ultrahigh response (1296), short response/recovery time (12/6 s), small detection limit (117 ppb), and remarkable anti-interference, even after repetitive mechanical bending and long-term fatigue. Furthermore, the flexible sensor demonstrates a noticeable response to the exhaled breath of a patient with Helicobacter pylori infection. After connecting the sensor with a green-light-emitting diode (LED) in the circuit, an alarm system successfully warns about ammonia levels based on the brightness of the LED. This work provides a potential strategy for wide-range ammonia detection and opens new applications in predictive and personalized healthcare platforms for noninvasive medical diagnosis.
