Abstract
First examples of diborane(6) dianions decorated with weakly coordination B(C6F5)3 (BCF) groups and SiEt3 + moieties have been synthesized demonstrating the synthetic potential of the [B2(CN)6]2- dianion. [B2{CNB(C6F5)3}6]2- (1) was isolated as potassium and tetrabutylammonium salt. 1 is a rare example for a weakly coordinating dianion and it was used for the stabilization of the carbocation [Ph3C]+ and the oxonium acid [H(OEt2)2]+. Reaction of [Ph3C]21 with HSiEt3 resulted in the silylated neutral diborane(6) [B2{CNB(C6F5)3}4(CNSiEt3)2] (2) in which two BCF groups have been selectively replaced by SiEt3 + substituents, underscoring the stability and chemical versatility of the [B2(CN)6]2- dianion. The chemical properties and physicochemical data of 1 and 2 provide insight into electronic, coordinating, and steric properties of theses novel diborane(6) compounds.

Abstract
A set of mixed-substituted potassium alkylcyano- and alkylcyanofluoroborates has been synthesized using easily accessible starting compounds and characterized by elemental analysis, NMR and vibrational spectroscopy, and mass spectrometry. In addition, single-crystal structures of salts of the cyanoborate anions have been derived from X-ray diffraction experiments. The 1-ethyl-3-methylimidazolium room temperature ionic liquids ([EMIm]+ -RTILs) with the new borate anions have been synthesized and their physicochemical properties, that is, high thermal and electrochemical stability, low viscosity, and high conductivity, have been compared to the properties of related [EMIm]+ -RTILs. The influence of the different alkyl substituents at boron has been assessed. The exemplary study on the properties with the [EMIm]+ -ILs with the mixed water stable alkylcyanoborate anions points towards the potential of these fluorine-free borate anions, in general.

Abstract
The increasing demand of species for the efficient capture and sensing of anions benefits from a systematic study of anion binding capabilities in the solid state. This work reports a detailed crystallographic study of ten structurally related podands and shows that these charged receptors bind anions with a combination of charge-assisted halogen and hydrogen bonds. Computational tools helped in highlighting the role of the different involved interaction and afforded possible design principles for the design of improved podands.

Abstract
Pairing cations with weakly coordinating anions (WCAs) often renders them highly Lewis-acidic and extremely reactive. Although these features are often desirable, excessive reactivity of a cation may lead to decomposition of solvents or WCAs, hindering isolation, storage and practical use of such species. In an attempt to mitigate the problem, we introduce a series of readily available novel Co(II)-WCA salts with the metal center stabilized by weakly bound ligands: SO2 , halogenated acetonitriles and nitromethane with comprehensive characterization including structural, magnetic and spectral (IR) properties as well as thermal stability assessment. The use of these simple yet rarely encountered ligands yields mostly stable and highly Lewis-acidic complexes, in some cases comparable to SbF5 according to calculated Fluoride Ion Affinities. Highly acidic character of the species is also reflected in observed reactivity. Since the most convenient route towards the Co(II) complexes leads through silver salts, the results are complemented with characterization of a series of novel Ag(I) complexes with abovementioned ligands. Experimental part is backed with DFT calculations which gives insight into the structure and energetics of presented Co(II) complexes and shows that Co(II) center is available for substrates like olefins. This makes them good candidates for catalysts in reactions requiring the presence of Lewis acids.

Abstract
A stable salt of the metalloradical [Ni(C6 H6 )2 ]+ hitherto unknown in the condensed phase was synthesized from [Ni(CO)4 ]+ [WCA]- and benzene ([WCA]- =[F{Al(ORF )3 }2 ]- ; RF =C(CF3 )3 ). Single crystal XRD reveals a remarkable asymmetrically η3 ,η6 -slipped sandwich structure. The magnetic properties of the [Ni(C6 H6 )2 ]+ cation were determined in solution and in the gas phase. Oxidation with the synergistic Ag+ /0.5 l2 system led to the salt [Ni(C6 H6 )2 ]2+ ([WCA]- )2 . All products were fully characterized by means of IR, Raman, NMR/EPR, single crystal and powder XRD.

Abstract
The pentafluoroorthotellurate group (teflate, OTeF5 ) is able to form species, for which only the fluoride analogues are known. Despite nickel fluorides being widely investigated, nickel teflates have remained elusive for decades. By reaction of [NiCl4 ]2- and neat ClOTeF5 , we have synthesized the homoleptic [Ni(OTeF5 )4 ]2- anion, which presents a distorted tetrahedral structure, unlike the polymeric [NiF4 ]2- . This high-spin complex has allowed the study of the electronic properties of the teflate group, which can be classified as a weak/medium-field ligand, and therefore behaves as the fluoride analogue also in ligand-field terms. The teflate ligands in [NEt4 ]2 [Ni(OTeF5 )4 ] are easily substituted, as shown by the formation of [Ni(NCMe)6 ][OTeF5 ]2 by dissolving it in acetonitrile. Nevertheless, careful reactions with other conventional ligands have enabled the crystallization of nickel teflate complexes with different coordination geometries, i.e. [NEt4 ]2 [trans-Ni(OEt2 )2 (OTeF5 )4 ] or [NEt4 ][Ni(bpyMe2 )(OTeF5 )3 ].

Abstract
The CuI salts [Cu(CH3 CN)4 ]PF and [Cu(oDFB)2 ]PF with the very weakly coordinating anion Al(OC(CF3 )3 )4- (PF) as well as [Cu(NEt3 )2 ]PF comprising the unique, linear bis-triethylamine complex [Cu(NEt3 )2 ]+ were synthesized and examined as catalysts for the conversion of monophenols to o-quinones. The activities of these CuI salts towards monooxygenation of 2,4-di-tert-butylphenol (DTBP-H) were compared to those of [Cu(CH3 CN)4 ]X salts with "classic" anions (BF4- , OTf- , PF6- ), revealing an anion effect on the activity of the catalyst and a ligand effect on the reaction rate. The reaction is drastically accelerated by employing CuII -semiquinone complexes as catalysts, indicating that formation of a CuII complex precedes the actual catalytic cycle. This result and other experimental observations show that with these systems the oxygenation of monophenols does not follow a dinuclear, but a mononuclear pathway analogous to that of topaquinone cofactor biosynthesis in amine oxidase.

Abstract
The primary phosphines MesPH2 and tBuPH2 react with 9-iodo-m-carborane yielding B9-connected secondary carboranylphosphines 1,7-H2 C2 B10 H9 -9-PHR (R=2,4,6-Me3 C6 H2 (Mes; 1 a), tBu (1 b)). Addition of tris(pentafluorophenyl)borane (BCF) to 1 a, b resulted in the zwitterionic compounds 1,7-H2 C2 B10 H9 -9-PHR(p-C6 F4 )BF(C6 F5 )2 (2 a, b) through nucleophilic para substitution of a C6 F5 ring followed by fluoride transfer to boron. Further reaction with Me2 SiHCl prompted a H-F exchange yielding the zwitterionic compounds 1,7-H2 C2 B10 H9 -9-PHR(p-C6 F4 )BH(C6 F5 )2 (3 a, b). The reaction of 2 a, b with one equivalent of R'MgBr (R'=Me, Ph) gave the extremely water-sensitive frustrated Lewis pairs 1,7-H2 C2 B10 H9 -9-PR(p-C6 F4 )B(C6 F5 )2 (4 a, b). Hydrolysis of the B-C6 F4 bond in 4 a, b gave the first tertiary B-carboranyl phosphines with three distinct substituents, 1,7-H2 C2 B10 H9 -9-PR(p-C6 F4 H) (5 a, b). Deprotonation of the zwitterionic compounds 2 a, b and 3 a, b formed anionic phosphines [1,7-H2 C2 B10 H9 -9-PR(p-C6 F4 )BX(C6 F5 )2 ]- [DMSOH]+ (R=Mes, X=F (6 a), R=tBu, X=F (6 b); R=Mes, X=H (7 a), R=tBu, X=H (7 b)). Reaction of 2 a, b with an excess of Grignard reagents resulted in the addition of R' at the boron atom yielding the anions [1,7-H2 C2 B10 H9 -9-PR(p-C6 F4 )BR'(C6 F5 )2 ]- (R=Mes, R'=Me (8 a), R=tBu, R'=Me (8 b); R=Mes, R'=Ph (9 a), R=tBu, R'=Ph (9 b)) with [MgBr(Et2 O)n ]+ as counterion. The ability of the zwitterionic compounds 3 a, b to hydrogenate imines as well as the Brønsted acidity of 3 a were investigated.

Abstract
A systematic study of halogenate(I/III) anions with polyatomic ligands is presented. The bis(perfluoro-tert-butoxy) halogenates(I) [X(OC4 F9 )2 ]- , X=Cl, Br, I, of chlorine, bromine, and iodine are prepared as their tetraethylammonium salts and characterized with IR, Raman, and NMR spectroscopic methods, as well as single-crystal X-ray diffraction analyses. Spectroscopical data are supported by quantum-chemical calculations. Additionally, the bonding situation of the species in question are analyzed and discussed. Furthermore, the oxidation to the corresponding halogenate(III) derivatives was studied. For [Br(OC4 F9 )2 ]- , oxidation with elemental fluorine gave [BrF2 (OC4 F9 )2 ]- . Iodide was directly oxidized by ClOC4 F9 to the IIII species [I(OC4 F9 )4 ]- , which is a surprisingly inert anion that might be used as a weakly coordinating anion (WCA) in the future. For [Cl(OC4 F9 )2 ]- , the decomposition products of the synthetic approaches towards a chlorine(III) system were analyzed.

Abstract
While reactions between ions and neutral molecules in the gas phase have been studied extensively, reactions between molecular ions of same polarity remain relatively unexplored. Herein we show that reactions between fragment ions generated in the gas phase and molecular ions of the same polarity are possible by soft-landing of both reagents on surfaces. The reactive [B12 I11 ]1- anion was deposited on a surface layer built up by landing the generally unreactive [B12 I12 ]2- . Ex-situ analysis of the generated material shows that [B24 I23 ]3- was formed. A computational study shows that the product is metastable in the gas phase, but a charge-balanced environment of a grounded surface may stabilize the triply charged product, as suggested by model calculations. This opens new opportunities for the generation of highly charged clusters using unconventional building blocks from the gas phase.

Abstract
The synthesis and characterization of the bis(η6 -benzene)lithium cation, the benzene metallocene of the lightest metal, is reported. The boron compound FmesBCl2 [Fmes: 2,4,6-tris(trifluoromethyl)phenyl] reacted with three molar equivalents of the lithio-acetylene reagent Li-C≡C-Fmxyl [Fmxyl: 3,5-bis(trifluoromethyl)phenyl]. Subsequent crystallization from benzene gave the [bis(η6 -benzene)Li]+ cation with the [{FmesB(-C≡C-Fmxyl)3 }2 Li]- anion. This parent [(arene)2 Li]+ cation shows an eclipsed arrangement of the pair of benzene ligands at the central lithium cation with uniform carbon-lithium bond lengths. The corresponding [(η6 -toluene)2 Li]+ and [(η6 -durene)2 Li]+ containing salts were similarly prepared. The bis(arene)lithium cations were characterized by X-ray diffraction, by solid-state 7 Li MAS NMR spectroscopy and their bonding features were analyzed by DFT calculations.

Abstract
The rational design of a geometrically constrained boron Lewis superacid featuring exceptional structure and reactivity is disclosed. It allowed the formation of non-classical electron deficient B-H-B type of bonding which was supported by spectroscopic and X-ray diffraction parameters as well as computational studies. Taming the pyramidal Lewis acid electrophilicity through weak coordinating anion dissociation enabled a series of highly challenging chemical transformations such as Csp 2 -H and Csp 3 -H activation under frustrated Lewis pair regime and the cleavage of Csp 3 -Si bonds. The demonstration of such type of rich chemical behavior and flexibility on a single molecular compound make it a unique mediator of chemical transformations generally restricted to transition metals.

Abstract
Given its earth abundance, silicon is ideal for constructing Lewis acids of use in catalysis or materials science. Neutral silanes were limited to moderate Lewis acidity, until halogenated catecholato ligands provoked a significant boost. However, catalytic applications of bis(perhalocatecholato)silanes were suffering from very poor solubility and unknown deactivation pathways. In this work, the novel per(trifluoromethyl)catechol, H2 catCF3 , and adducts of its silicon complex Si(catCF3 )2 (1) are described. According to the computed fluoride ion affinity, 1 ranks among the strongest neutral Lewis acids currently accessible in the condensed phase. The improved robustness and affinity of 1 enable deoxygenations of aldehydes, ketones, amides, or phosphine oxides, and a carbonyl-olefin metathesis. All those transformations have never been catalyzed by a neutral silane. Attempts to obtain donor-free 1 attest to the extreme Lewis acidity by stabilizing adducts with even the weakest donors, such as benzophenone or hexaethyl disiloxane.

Abstract
A facile synthesis and isolation of pristine silicon tetrakis(trifluoromethanesulfonate), Si(OTf)4 , is reported, acting as the first neutral silicon-based Lewis superacid suitable towards soft and hard Lewis bases. Its OTf groups have a dual function: they are excellent leaving groups and modulate the degree of reactivity towards soft and hard Lewis bases. Exposed to soft Lewis donors, Si(OTf)4 leads to [L2 Si(OTf)4 ] complexes (L=isocyanide, thioether and carbonyl compounds) with retention of all Si-OTf bonds. In contrast, it can cleave C-X bonds (X=F, Cl) of hard organic Lewis bases with a high tendency to form SiX4 (X=F, Cl) after halide/triflate exchange. Most notable, Si(OTf)4 allows a gentle oxydefluorination of mono- and bis(trifluoromethyl)benzenes, resulting in the formation of the corresponding benzoylium species, which are stabilized by the weakly coordinating [Si(OTf)6 ] dianion.

Abstract
130 years after Mond discovered the first homoleptic carbonyl complex Ni(CO)4, we report on a [Ni(CO)4].+ salt as the first synthesis of any homoleptic nickel carbonyl cation in the condensed phase. It was prepared by oxidation of nickel metal with the synergistic oxidant Ag[F{Al(ORF)3}2]/0.5 I2 (RF=C(CF3)3) in CO atmosphere. This D2d‐symmetric metalloradical represents the last missing entry among the structurally characterized homoleptic carbonyl cations of Groups 6 to 11. Additionally, the nickel tricarbonyl‐nitrosyl cation [Ni(CO)3(NO)]+ was obtained by usage of NO[F{Al(ORF)3}2] and all products were fully characterized by means of IR, Raman, NMR/EPR, single crystal and powder XRD.

Abstract
The hexacoordinated antimony(V) dication [(ppy)3 Sb]2+ ([1]2+ ; ppy=2-(2-pyridyl)phenyl), stabilized by three intramolecular donor-acceptor interactions, has been isolated as its hexachloroantimonate salt [1][SbCl6 ]2 , prepared by the oxidative addition of chlorine to the neutral stibine [(ppy)3 Sb] (1), followed by the abstraction of chloride. Air-stable [1][SbCl6 ]2 exhibits remarkable thermal stability and the three ppy ligands on the antimony atom are shown to be magnetically inequivalent in the 1 H and 13 C NMR spectra. A hexacoordinated, meridional octahedral bonding geometry has been determined for [1][SbCl6 ]2 by X-ray crystallographic analysis. Theoretical calculations were performed to investigate why the meridional form was generated preferentially over the facial form. In addition, the dynamics of the ppy ligands were investigated by variable-temperature 1 H NMR spectroscopy. The potential to generate dications by using a single-electron-transfer reagent has also been investigated. The dication [1]2+ is the first [12-Sb-6]2+ chemical species to have been structurally determined.

Abstract
Dibenzo[a,e]pentalene (DBP) is a non-alternant conjugated hydrocarbon with antiaromatic character and ambipolar electrochemical behavior. Upon both reduction and oxidation, it becomes aromatic. We herein study the chemical oxidation and reduction of a planar DBP derivative and a bent DBP-phane. The molecular structures of its planar dication, cation radical and anion radical in the solid state demonstrate the gained aromaticity through bond length equalization, which is supported by nucleus independent chemical shift-calculations. EPR spectra on the cation radical confirm the spin delocalization over the DBP framework. A similar delocalization was not possible in the reduced bent DBP-phane, which stabilized itself by proton abstraction from a solvent molecule upon reduction. This is the first report on structures of a DBP cation radical and dication in the solid state and of a reduced bent DBP derivative. Our study provides valuable insight into the charged species of DBP for its application as semiconductor.

Abstract
Fluoride abstraction from different types of transition metal fluoride complexes [Ln MF] (M=Ti, Ni, Cu) by the Lewis acid tris(pentafluoroethyl)difluorophosphorane (C2 F5 )3 PF2 to yield cationic transition metal complexes with the tris(pentafluoroethyl)trifluorophosphate counterion (FAP anion, [(C2 F5 )3 PF3 ]- ) is reported. (C2 F5 )3 PF2 reacted with trans-[Ni(iPr2 Im)2 (ArF )F] (iPr2 Im=1,3-diisopropylimidazolin-2-ylidene; ArF =C6 F5 , 1 a; 4-CF3 -C6 F4 , 1 b; 4-C6 F5 -C6 F4 , 1 c) through fluoride transfer to form the complex salts trans-[Ni(iPr2 Im)2 (solv)(ArF )]FAP (2 a-c[solv]; solv=Et2 O, CH2 Cl2 , THF) depending on the reaction medium. In the presence of stronger Lewis bases such as carbenes or PPh3 , solvent coordination was suppressed and the complexes trans-[Ni(iPr2 Im)2 (PPh3 )(C6 F5 )]FAP (trans-2 a[PPh3 ]) and cis-[Ni(iPr2 Im)2 (Dipp2 Im)(C6 F5 )]FAP (cis-2 a[Dipp2 Im]) (Dipp2 Im=1,3-bis(2,6-diisopropylphenyl)imidazolin-2-ylidene) were isolated. Fluoride abstraction from [(Dipp2 Im)CuF] (3) in CH2 Cl2 or 1,2-difluorobenzene led to the isolation of [{(Dipp2 Im)Cu}2 ]2+ 2 FAP- (4). Subsequent reaction of 4 with PPh3 and different carbenes resulted in the complexes [(Dipp2 Im)Cu(LB)]FAP (5 a-e, LB=Lewis base). In the presence of C6 Me6 , fluoride transfer afforded [(Dipp2 Im)Cu(C6 Me6 )]FAP (5 f), which serves as a source of [(Dipp2 Im)Cu)]+ . Fluoride abstraction of [Cp2 TiF2 ] (7) resulted in the formation of dinuclear [FCp2 Ti(μ-F)TiCp2 F]FAP (8) (Cp=η5 -C5 H5 ) with one terminal fluoride ligand at each titanium atom and an additional bridging fluoride ligand.

Abstract
The employment of the hexyl-substituted anion [HexCB11 Cl11 ]- allowed the synthesis of a ZnII species, Zn[HexCB11 Cl11 ]2 , 3, in which the Zn2+ cation is only weakly coordinated to two carborate counterions and that is soluble in low polarity organic solvents such as bromobenzene. DOSY NMR studies show the facile displacement of at least one of the counterions, and this near nakedness of the cation results in high catalytic activity in the hydrosilylation of 1-hexene and 1-methyl-1cyclohexene. Fluoride ion affinity (FIA) calculations reveal a solution Lewis acidity of 3 (FIA=262.1 kJ mol-1 ) that is higher than that of the landmark Lewis acid B(C6 F5 )3 (FIA=220.5 kJ mol-1 ). This high Lewis acidity leads to a high activity in catalytic CO2 and Ph2 CO reduction by Et3 SiH and hydrogenation of 1,1-diphenylethylene using 1,4-cyclohexadiene as the hydrogen source. Compound 3 was characterized by multinuclear NMR spectroscopy, mass spectrometry, single crystal X-ray diffraction, and DFT studies.

Abstract
NIR‐sensitized cationic polymerization proceeded with good efficiency, as was demonstrated with epoxides, vinyl ether, and oxetane. A heptacyanine functioned as sensitizer while iodonium salt served as coinitiator. The anion adopts a special function in a series selected from fluorinated phosphates (a: [PF6]−, b: [PF3(C2F5)3]−, c: [PF3(n‐C4F9)3]−), aluminates (d: [Al(O‐t‐C4F9)4]−, e: [Al(O(C3F6)CH3)4]−), and methide [C(O‐SO2CF3)3]− (f). Vinyl ether showed the best cationic polymerization efficiency followed by oxetanes and oxiranes. DFT calculations provided a rough pattern regarding the electrostatic potential of each anion where d showed a better reactivity than e and b. Formation of interpenetrating polymer networks (IPNs) using trimethylpropane triacrylate and epoxides proceeded in the case of NIR‐sensitized polymerization where anion d served as counter ion in the initiator system. No IPN was formed by UV‐LED initiation using the same monomers but thioxanthone/iodonium salt as photoinitiator. Exposure was carried out with new NIR‐LED devices emitting at either 805 or 870 nm.

Abstract
The stabilizing neighboring effect of halo substituents on silyl cations was tested for a series of peri‐halo substituted acenaphthyl‐based silyl cations 3. The chloro‐ (3 b), bromo‐ (3 c), and iodo‐ (3 d) stabilized cations were synthesized by the Corey protocol. Structural and NMR spectroscopic investigations for cations 3 b–d supported by the results of density functional calculations, which indicate their halonium ion nature. According to the fluorobenzonitrile (FBN) method, the silyl Lewis acidity decreases along the series of halonium ions 3, the fluoronium ion 3 a being a very strong and the iodonium ion 3 d a moderate Lewis acid. Halonium ions 3 b and 3 c react with starting silanes in a substituent redistribution reaction and form siliconium ions 4 b and 4 c. The structure of siliconium borate 4 c2[B12Br12] reveals the trigonal bipyramidal coordination environment of the silicon atom with the two bromo substituents in the apical positions.

Abstract
The syntheses of the homoleptic bis(arene) niobium cations [Nb(arene)2 ]+ (arene = C6 H3 Me3 , C6 H5 Me) with 16 valence electrons and heteroleptic arene-carbonyl cations [(CO)Nb(arene)2 ]+ (arene = C6 H3 Me3 , C6 H5 Me) and [(arene)M(CO)4 ]+ (arene = C6 H3 Me3 , C6 H6 ) obeying 18 valence electrons are described. Stabilization of these complexes was achieved by using the weakly coordinating anions [Al(ORF )4 ]- or [F{Al(ORF )3 }2 ]- (RF = C(CF3 )3 ). The limits of two synthesis routes starting from neutral Nb(arene)2 (arene = C6 H3 Me3 , C6 H5 Me) or [NEt4 ][M(CO)6 ] (M = Nb, Ta) were investigated. All compounds were analyzed by single crystal X-ray determination, vibrational and NMR spectroscopy. DFT calculations were executed to support the experimental data.

Abstract
The syntheses of the two novel complexes [Ag{Mo/W(CO)6 }2 ]+ [F-{Al(ORF )3 }2 ]- (RF =C(CF3 )3 ) are reported along with their structural and spectroscopic characterization. The X-ray structure shows that three carbonyl ligands from each M(CO)6 fragment bend towards the silver atom within binding Ag-C distance range. DFT calculations of the free cations [Ag{M(CO)6 }2 ]+ (M=Cr, Mo, W) in the electronic singlet state give equilibrium structures with C2 symmetry with two bridging carbonyl groups from each hexacarbonyl ligand. Similar structures with C2 symmetry (M=Nb) and D2 symmetry (M=V, Ta) are calculated for the isoelectronic group 5 anions [Ag{M(CO)6 }2 ]- (M=V, Nb, Ta). The electronic structure of the cations is analyzed with the QTAIM and EDA-NOCV methods, which provide detailed information about the nature of the chemical bonds between Ag+ and the {M(CO)6 }2 q (q = -2, M = V, Nb, Ta; q = 0, M = Cr, Mo, W) ligands.

Abstract
Heterobimetallic cationic sandwich complexes [M(μ-Cp)M'Cp]+ of group 13 (M=Ga, In) and group 14 (M'=Ge, Sn) elements have been prepared as [WCA]- salts (WCA=Al(ORF )4 ; ORF =OC(CF3 )3 ). Their molecular structures include free apical gallium or indium atoms. The sandwich complexes were formed in the reactions of [M(HMB)]+ [WCA]- (HMB=C6 Me6 ) with the free metallocenes [M'Cp2 ]. Their structures are related to known stannocene and stannocenium salts; the unprecedented germanium analogues, namely the free germanocenium cation [GeCp]+ and the corresponding triple-decker complex cation [CpGe(μ-Cp)GeCp]+ , are described herein. By variation of the reaction conditions, these sandwich complexes can be transformed into the group 13/14 mixed cationic coordination polymer [{In(HMB)(μ-SnCp2 )}n ][WCA]n . This polymeric chain motif was also successfully replicated by the synthesis of complexes [{Ga/In(HMB)(μ-FeCp2 )}n ][WCA]n containing FeCp2 as a bridging ligand.

Abstract
While perfluorinated aryl, aryloxy and alkoxy aluminum species are well-established as weakly coordinating anions (WCAs), corresponding perfluoroalkyl aluminum derivatives are virtually unknown. Reaction of Si(C2 F5 )3 CH3 with Li[AlH4 ] afforded the tetrakis(pentafluoroethyl)aluminate, [Al(C2 F5 )4 ]- . Several salts of the [Al(C2 F5 )4 ]- ion were synthesized and characterized by NMR spectroscopic methods, mass spectrometry, X-ray diffraction studies and elemental analysis.

Abstract
Salts of the tetrakis(pentafluoroethyl)aluminate anion [Al(C2 F5 )4 ]- were obtained from AlCl3 and LiC2 F5 . They were isolated with different counter-cations and characterized by NMR and vibrational spectroscopy and mass spectrometry. Degradation of the [Al(C2 F5 )4 ]- ion was found to proceed via 1,2-fluorine shifts and stepwise loss of CF(CF3 ) under formation of [(C2 F5 )4-n AlFn ]- (n=1-4) as assessed by NMR spectroscopy and mass spectrometry and supported by results of DFT calculations. In addition, the [(C2 F5 )AlF3 ]- ion was structurally characterized.

Abstract
Nitro‐functionalized undecahalogenated closo‐dodecaborates [B12X11(NO2)]2− were synthesized in high purities and characterized by NMR, IR, and Raman spectroscopy, single crystal X‐diffraction, mass spectrometry, and gas‐phase ion vibrational spectroscopy. The NO2 substituent leads to an enhanced electronic and electrochemical stability compared to the parent perhalogenated [B12X12]2− (X=F–I) dianions evidenced by photoelectron spectroscopy, cyclic voltammetry, and quantum‐chemical calculations. The stabilizing effect decreases from X=F to X=I. Thermogravimetric measurements of the salts indicate the loss of the nitric oxide radical (NO.). The homolytic NO. elimination from the dianion under very soft collisional excitation in gas‐phase ion experiments results in the formation of the radical [B12X11O]2−.. Theoretical investigations suggest that the loss of NO. proceeds via the rearrangement product [B12X11(ONO)]2−. The O‐bonded nitrosooxy structure is thermodynamically more stable than the N‐bonded nitro structure and its formation by radical recombination of [B12X11O]2−. and NO. is demonstrated.

Abstract
The homoleptic group 5 carbonylates [M(CO)6 ]- (M=Nb, Ta) serve as ligands in carbonyl-terminated heterobimetallic Agm Mn clusters containing 3 to 11 metal atoms. Based on our serendipitous [Ag6 {Nb(CO)6 }4 ]2+ (4 a2+ ) precedent, we established access to such Agm Mn clusters of the composition [Agm {M(CO)6 }n ]x (M=Nb, Ta; m=1, 2, 6; n=2, 3, 4, 5; x=1-, 1+, 2+). Salts of those molecular cluster ions were synthesized by the reaction of [NEt4 ][M(CO)6 ] and Ag[Al(ORF )4 ] (RF =C(CF3 )3 ) in the correct stoichiometry in 1,2,3,4-tetrafluorobenzene at -35 °C. The solid-state structures were determined by single-crystal X-ray diffraction methods and, owing to the thermal instability of the clusters, a limited scope of spectroscopic methods. In addition, DFT-based AIM calculations were performed to provide an understanding of the bonding within these clusters. Apparently, the clusters 3+ (m=6, n=5) and 42+ (m=6, n=4) are superatom complexes with trigonal-prismatic or octahedral Ag6 superatom cores. The [M(CO)6 ]- ions then bind through three CO units as tridentate chelate ligands to the superatom core, giving overall structures related to tetrahedral AX4 (42+ ) or trigonal bipyramidal AX5 molecules (3+ ).

Abstract
Different types of high-yield, easily scalable syntheses for cyano(fluoro)borates Kt[BFn (CN)4-n ] (n=0-2) (Kt=cation), which are versatile building blocks for materials applications and chemical synthesis, have been developed. Tetrafluoroborates react with trimethylsilyl cyanide in the presence of metal-free Brønsted or Lewis acid catalysts under unprecedentedly mild conditions to give tricyanofluoroborates or tetracyanoborates. Analogously, pentafluoroethyltrifluoroborates are converted into pentafluoroethyltricyanoborates. Boron trifluoride etherate, alkali metal salts, and trimethylsilyl cyanide selectively yield dicyanodifluoroborates or tricyanofluoroborates. Fluorination of cyanohydridoborates is the third reaction type that includes direct fluorination with, for example, elemental fluorine, stepwise halogenation/fluorination reactions, and electrochemical fluorination (ECF) according to the Simons process. In addition, fluorination of [BH(CN)2 {OC(O)Et}]- to result in [BF(CN)2 {OC(O)Et}]- is described.

Abstract
Boron's unique position in the Periodic Table, that is, at the apex of the line separating metals and nonmetals, makes it highly versatile in chemical reactions and applications. Contemporary demand for renewable and clean energy as well as energy-efficient products has seen boron playing key roles in energy-related research, such as 1) activating and synthesizing energy-rich small molecules, 2) storing chemical and electrical energy, and 3) converting electrical energy into light. These applications are fundamentally associated with boron's unique characteristics, such as its electron-deficiency and the availability of an unoccupied p orbital, which allow the formation of a myriad of compounds with a wide range of chemical and physical properties. For example, boron's ability to achieve a full octet of electrons with four covalent bonds and a negative charge has led to the synthesis of a wide variety of borate anions of high chemical and electrochemical stability-in particular, weakly coordinating anions. This Review summarizes recent advances in the study of boron compounds for energy-related processes and applications.
