Abstract
The rising prices of fishery derivatives limits their use in aquafeeds. Therefore, other alternatives are used to replace those ingredients. Among them, microalgae are of great interest both as an ingredient and as a potential stabilising agent against lipid oxidation. This study evaluates on the use of Nannochloropsis gaditana to prevent lipid oxidation in a set of 12 aquafeeds over 540 days of storage. Aquafeeds were formulated with/without 15 % N. gaditana combined with two antioxidants -butylhydroxytoluene (25-150 mg·kg-1) or vitamin E (500-3000 mg·kg-1). The effect of i) storage period, ii) presence of microalgae and iii) antioxidant addition on lipid oxidation was assessed. Results showed higher fatty acid degradation in diets lacking microalgae. The microalgae supplemented diets is enough for preserving feeds presenting the highest antioxidant effect at the end, without significant differences with the microalgae-supplemented feeds and those including antioxidants after 540 days of storage.

Abstract
This study was conducted to explore the effects of dietary inclusion of Chlorella vulgaris (CV) or/and vitamin C (VC) on growth, hemato-biochemical parameters, oxidative and antioxidant status, reproductive hormones, and semen quality variables, and scrotal-testicular dimensions of Zaraibi goat bucks. Twenty sexually mature bucks (41.49 ± 0.91 kg BW) were randomly divided into 4 groups (5 bucks/group). The control group was fed the control diet, while the other three groups received a diet supplemented with VC (2 g/animal /day), CV (5 g/animal/day), and CV plus VC (the same levels), respectively, for 8 weeks (treatment period), and then semen was collected for 8 weeks. Results showed that dietary supplementation with CV-VC combination significantly increased the final body weight, weight gain, packed cell volume, hemoglobin, red blood cells, white blood cells, and lymphocytes; elevated serum total protein, globulin, testosterone, estradiol, superoxide dismutase, glutathione peroxidase with a significant reduction in Malondialdehyde in serum and seminal plasma. Also, the CV-VC combination significantly improved the ejaculate volume, total sperm output, sperm concentration, and live sperm, and reduced reaction time and sperm abnormality of bucks. Either CV or VC given separately or in combination, at the chosen levels, had no detrimental effects on animal physiological responses with normal hepatic and renal functions. Therefore, the CV-VC combination could be safely utilized as a dietary supplement in buck's diets to improve antioxidant defenses, scavenge free radicals, and potentiate buck's reproductive activities under normal conditions.

Abstract
Microalgae-based carbon dioxide (CO2) biofixation and biorefinery are the most efficient methods of biological CO2 reduction and reutilization. The diversification and high-value byproducts of microalgal biomass, known as microalgae-based biorefinery, are considered the most promising platforms for the sustainable development of energy and the environment, in addition to the improvement and integration of microalgal cultivation, scale-up, harvest, and extraction technologies. In this review, the factors influencing CO2 biofixation by microalgae, including microalgal strains, flue gas, wastewater, light, pH, temperature, and microalgae cultivation systems are summarized. Moreover, the biorefinery of Chlorella biomass for producing biofuels and its byproducts, such as fine chemicals, feed additives, and high-value products, are also discussed. The technical and economic assessments (TEAs) and life cycle assessments (LCAs) are introduced to evaluate the sustainability of microalgae CO2 fixation technology. This review provides detailed insights on the adjusted factors of microalgal cultivation to establish sustainable biological CO2 fixation technology, and the diversified applications of microalgal biomass in biorefinery. The economic and environmental sustainability, and the limitations and needs of microalgal CO2 fixation, are discussed. Finally, future research directions are provided for CO2 reduction by microalgae.

Abstract
BACKGROUND AND AIM Stress can cause physiological and biological disorders in the body. On the other hand, antioxidants from vitamins and minerals are effective for stress treatment. Therefore, this study aimed to evaluate the effect of the administration of Vitamins C and E on serum superoxide dismutase (SOD), malondialdehyde (MDA), catalase (CAT), glutathione peroxidase (GPx), testosterone, and cortisol activity in albino rats with chronic variable stress (CVS). MATERIALS AND METHODS Twenty albino rats were randomly assigned into four treatment groups: C was administered normal saline; T1 was administered Vitamins C and E; T2 was only induced CVS; and T3 was induced CVS followed by Vitamins C and E administration. All treatments were applied for 4 weeks, respectively. Furthermore, 5 mL of blood samples were collected intracardially. Body weight data were collected for the initial and final weights. From serum samples, SOD, GPx, and CAT were measured using the enzymol method; MDA was measured using the high-performance liquid chromatography method; and testosterone and cortisol were measured using the enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay method. All variables were analyzed statistically using analysis of variance followed by the Duncan test (p<0.05). RESULTS Our findings showed that the T1 and T3 groups significantly decreased (p<0.001) compared to T2 in the following parameters: SOD, MDA, GPx, and cortisol. Meanwhile, CAT and testosterone levels in the T1 and T3 groups were significantly increased (p<0.001) compared to the T2 group. In addition, the weight gain in T1 and T3 groups was significantly increased (p<0.001) compared to T2 group. CONCLUSION It can be concluded that the administration of Vitamins C and E had a significant effect to alleviate SOD, MDA, GPx, and cortisol and to improve the testosterone level in albino rats with CVS.

Abstract
Simple Summary A highly nutritious quality diet that is readily accepted and digested is essential for better growth and development of aquaculture species. Most newly hatched fish and shrimp depend on live food as an important basic diet. Copepods are considered the nutritional benchmark diet for a wide range of marine fish larvae. However, Artemia and rotifers are often favored as starter feed, despite their inferior nutritional values in comparison to copepods. Therefore, Artemia, rotifers, and other live foods are commonly enriched with nutrients such as fatty acids, vitamins, minerals, and probiotics to imitate the copepod’s level of essential nutrients to improve rearing success for fish and crustacean larvae. Abstract At the present time, no artificial larval diet is capable of entirely fulfilling the dietary requirements of several larval fish and crustacean species. Zooplankton live food is the basic foundation of fish larviculture, and successful rearing of fish larvae still heavily depends on an adequate supply of nutritious live food. Despite being important, the production protocols of copepods and cladocerans (Moina) are still underdeveloped in hatcheries. Rotifers and Artemia are the most commonly used live foods. However, these live foods are evidently lacking in crucial nutrient constituents. Hence, through nutrient enrichment, live food with the nutritional profile that meets the requirements of fish larvae can be produced. With the aim to maximize the effectiveness of production to optimize profitability, it is important to evaluate and improve culture techniques for the delivery of micro- and macro-nutrients as feed supplements to larvae in aquaculture systems. Bioencapsulation and enrichment are the evolving techniques in aquaculture that are commonly employed to enhance the nutritional quality of live food by integrating nutrients into them, which subsequently improves the growth, survival, and disease resistance of the consuming hosts. This review aims to highlight some of the approaches and methods used to improve the nutritional quality of live food by modifying their nutrient composition, which could have immense promise in the enhancement of aquatic animal health.

Abstract
One Pediococcus acidilactici strain, named PA-GY2 was isolated from the gut of cultured Macrobrachium rosenbergii. In order to better examine the potential scope and applicability of this strain in M. rosenbergii culture, based on the control diet, four experimental diets containing single or combined immunostimulants were produced by supplementing with yeast (Saccharomyces cerevisiae, SC) or/and β-glucan (G), then fed to the prawns (6.70 g ± 0.74) in five groups, which were named as group C (control group), P (PA-GY2), PS (PA-GY2 + SC, 1:1), PG (PA-GY2 + G) and PGS (PA-GY2 + SC + G), respectively. After a 60-day feeding trial, growth performance, feed utilization, immune response and disease resistance of prawns were evaluated in the present study. Results indicated that (1) The growth performance of the prawns in group PS and PGS were significantly improved. The prawns in group PGS presented the lowest feed coefficiency (FC), while prawns in group C presented the highest FC. (2) The protease activity was significantly improved by dietary immunostimulants supplementation, meanwhile, prawns in the group PS presented the highest lipase activity. (3) The highest total hemocyte count and respiratory burst activity were found in the group P and PG, respectively. The phagocytic index of the prawns in the group C was significantly lower than those in group P and PGS. (4) Dietary PA-GY2 single or combined with SC or/and β-glucan increased the immune related genes expression, including some antibacterial and antioxidant enzymes, while decreased the tumor necrosis factor-α gene expression, which led to the decreased cumulative mortality rate of prawns during the Aeromonas hydrophila challenge test. Based on the results of growth performance, digestive enzymes activity and immune response of M. rosenbergii, PA-GY2 supplementation, single or combined with SC or/and β-glucan could be suggested as promising immunostimulants in prawns farming.

Abstract
The current study assessed the effect of dietary canthaxanthin and lycopene supplementation at different concentrations on growth performance and antioxidant status in yellow perch (Perca flavescens). In this regard, fish with initial weight (32 ± 1.0 g) were divided into five groups in triplicate, and fed on carotenoid-free diet (control), canthaxanthin (CTX) (50 and 100 mg/kg diet), and lycopene (200 and 400 mg/kg diet) for 60 days. Growth parameters and antioxidant enzymes were evaluated after 30 and 60 days post feeding. Tissue liver and intestine from six fish per treatment was collected for antioxidant and digestive enzymes analysis. The results revealed a significant increase (P < 0.05) of lipid content in the group fed lycopene at a dietary level 400 mg/kg for 60 days, compared to the control. Moreover, dietary carotenoids exhibited no significant effect on growth performance; this was evidenced by no significant up-regulation of growth hormone (gh) and insulin-like growth factor 1b (igf-1b) genes after 30 and 60 days post feeding. Intestinal lipase and trypsin activities were significantly improved with dietary lycopene especially at a dose of (400 mg/kg diet) for 60 days. Malondialdehyde (MDA) level in liver was also significantly decreased with dietary lycopene (400 mg/kg diet) for 60 days. Hepatic superoxide dismutase (SOD), catalase (CAT), and Glutathione peroxidase (GSH-Px) activities were significantly decreased with dietary CTX, especially at dose (100 mg/kg diet) and lycopene at a concentration of 200 and 400 mg/kg diet after 60 days feeding. Additionally, the immune-related gene interleukin-1 beta (il-1b) mRNA expression level revealed up-regulation in groups fed on CTX at different concentrations for 30 days, and fish fed lycopene at a concentration level 400 mg/kg diet for 60 days. The obtained results concluded that dietary supplementation of canthaxanthin and lycopene could enhance immune response and maintain antioxidants defense of fish. Therefore, it considered as a functional aquafeed ingredient for yellow perch.

Abstract
Stress in teleosts is an increasingly studied topic because of its interaction with growth, reproduction, immune system and ultimately fitness of the animal. Whether it is for evaluating welfare in aquaculture, adaptive capacities in fish ecology, or to investigate effects of human-induced rapid environmental change, new experimental methods to describe stress physiology in captive or wild fish have flourished. Cortisol has proven to be a reliable indicator of stress and is considered the major stress hormone. Initially principally measured in blood, cortisol measurement methods are now evolving towards lower invasiveness and to allow repeated measurements over time. We present an overview of recent achievements in the field of cortisol measurement in fishes, discussing new alternatives to blood, whole body and eggs as matrices for cortisol measurement, notably mucus, faeces, water, scales and fins. In parallel, new analytical tools are being developed to increase specificity, sensitivity and automation of the measure. The review provides the founding principles of these techniques and introduces their potential as continuous monitoring tools. Finally, we consider promising avenues of research that could be prioritised in the field of stress physiology of fishes.

Abstract
The aim of the present study was to investigate beneficial effects of dietary 1,8-cineole (cineole) supplementation on physiological, immunological and antioxidant responses of rainbow trout (Oncorhynchus mykiss) to crowding stress. The fish were fed for 50 days with diets containing 0 (control), 0.05, 0.1, 0.25, 0.5 and 1% cineole prior to exposure to a 14-day crowding stress. Serum stress markers (cortisol, glucose, lactate, T4 and T3), antioxidant responses [catalase (CAT) and superoxide dismutase (SOD) activities and total antioxidant capacity (TAC) and malondyaldehyde (MDA) levels] and immune responses [lysozyme and alternative complement (ACH50) activity, and total immunoglobulin (Ig) levels], and blood leukocyte (WBC) and differential counts were measured before and after crowding stress. Results showed that 1% cineole was capable to reduce the basal and stress-induced cortisol elevation and increase the serum T3 levels after stress. Increase in dietary cineole levels significantly decreased serum cortisol, glucose and lactate levels. Increase in dietary cineole levels significantly increased serum CAT, SOD, lysozyme and ACH50 activities, and TAC and eosinophil levels, and decreased MDA and monocyte levels. After the stress, there was no significant difference in the control group CAT and SOD activities compared to the basal values; however, CAT activities decreased and SOD activities increased in the cineole-treated groups compared to the basal values. Nevertheless, the control group had significantly lower CAT and SOD activities compared to the fish treated with 0.1-1% cineole. Cineole significantly increased blood WBC and serum lysozyme, ACH50 and total Ig. Moreover, cineole administration significantly mitigated the stress-induced decrease in total Ig levels as well as increase in leukocyte count. The cineole-treated fish had higher survival and growth performance compared to the control group. Although all levels of cineole (0.05-1%) showed beneficial effects on different tested factors, 0.5 and 1% levels had beneficial effects on most of the tested factors; thus, are recommended for dietary inclusion to suppress adverse effects of stress in trout.

Abstract
This study evaluates the effects of red beet (RB) and betaine on rainbow trout submitted to an acute stress challenge. A control diet was compared with four experimental diets in which red beet (14 and 28%) and betaine (0.9 and 1.63%) were incorporated in different concentrations according to a factorial design. Cortisol in plasma and fin, glucose and lactate plasma levels, and malondialdehide (MDA) in muscle were all measured before the stress challenge and 30 min and 6 and 12 h after the stress challenge as parameters to determine the diet effects. RB and betaine had no effect on cortisol, glucose, and MDA basal levels. However, lactate basal levels were significantly lower on fish fed with RB and betaine. Thirty minutes after the stress challenge, there was a significant increase in plasma and fin cortisol, glucose and lactate concentrations, although fish fed with diets containing RB and betaine showed significantly higher plasma cortisol values. MDA values of fish fed with 14% RB and 0.9% betaine were significantly higher than MDA values from fish fed with 28% RB and 1.63% betaine. After 6 and 12 h, plasma and fin cortisol and lactate levels recovered in a similar trend. Glucose plasma levels recovered in almost all groups 12 h after the stress. Also, MDA values recovered basal levels after 6 and 12 h. RB and betaine did not enhance the tolerance to the stress challenge compared to the control group, although the presence of these ingredients had no negative effect on any of the stress indicators.

Abstract
Onion Allium cepa and ginger Zingiber officinale have health-promoting properties that qualify them as functional foods. The effect of repeated acute stressors was examined in juvenile Brown-marbled Grouper Epinephelus fuscoguttatus that were fed four diets supplemented with onion at 1.8%, ginger at 1.8%, vitamin C at 0.86%, and β-glucan at 0.8% of the diet. The non-supplemented diet served as the control. After 12 weeks of feeding, fish were exposed to stressors and were experimentally infected with a fish pathogen, the bacterium Vibrio harveyi JML1. After repeated exposure to hypoxia, cortisol levels rose significantly in the non-supplemented fish compared to those fed onion, ginger, β-glucan, or vitamin C. Within groups, postexposure cortisol levels in the onion-, ginger-, and vitamin C-fed fish did not change relative to pre-stress levels, whereas significant increases in poststress values were observed in the control and β-glucan groups. The net cortisol increase was also significantly greater in the non-supplemented group compared to the supplemented groups. The net cortisol increase did not vary among the supplemented groups except that the β-glucan-fed group exhibited a higher net increase than the onion-fed group. Similarly, repeated acute exposure to osmotic stress significantly increased the plasma cortisol level in the non-supplemented group compared to groups that received supplements; no differences were found in the supplemented groups except the β-glucan group. Within groups, significant increases in poststress values relative to pre-stress levels were found only in the control and β-glucan groups. Repeated acute exposure to hypoxia significantly increased cumulative mortality in the control group compared to the supplemented groups (except the β-glucan group), whereas repeated exposure to acute osmotic stress significantly increased cumulative mortality only in the control group 10 d after infection with V. harveyi JML1. Based on our collective results, most of the supplemented groups performed better than the control, but the best supplements were onion and ginger in terms of enhancing stress tolerance and increasing survival of Brown-marbled Grouper upon infection with V. harveyi JML1.

Abstract
The aim of this study was to examine whether (1) severe changes in salinity produced increased stress, and (2) vitamin C supplementation might reduce the observed damage in Nile tilapia. The parameters measured included condition factor, survival rate, and gene expression of catalase (CAT), heat shock protein 70 (HSP70), glutathione reductase (GSR), glutathione synthase (GSS), and glutathione peroxidase (GPx). The investigation was conducted with 160 Nile tilapia divided into four treatment groups: freshwater; 7 or 21 parts per thousand (‰) salinity, all fed a basal diet; as well as a fourth treatment group consisting of fish kept at 21‰ salinity fed a diet supplemented with vitamin C (1500 mg/kg). For gene expression analysis, liver samples were collected after 24 h or after 14 d. After 24 h, fish raised in 21‰ salinity and fed with the diet supplemented with vitamin C showed similar GPx expression as the control freshwater group. GSS expression in 21‰ salinity was similar to fish exposed to 7‰ salinity. Nile tilapia exposed to 21‰ salinity without vitamin C supplementation exhibited the highest HSP70 gene expression levels after 24 h. After 14-dtreatment, the lowest survival rate was observed in the 21‰ salinity group. After 14 d, the highest expression of GPx and GSR levels was detected in fish in the 21‰ salinity group that received vitamin C. Data indicate that vitamin C supplementation enhanced the expression of genes related to antioxidant capacity in Nile tilapia exposed to higher salinity, thereby increasing protection against the oxidative effects induced by high water salinity.</AB>.

Abstract
The main aim of the present study was to assess the effects of chronic high stocking density on liver proteome of rainbow trout. Rainbow trout juveniles (42.6 ± 2.3 g average body weight) were randomly distributed into six tanks at two stocking densities (low stocking density (LD) = 20 kg m-3 and high stocking density (HD) = 80 kg m-3). Both treatments were performed in triplicate tanks for a period of 60 days. High stocking density caused a reduction in the growth performance compared with LD fish. Lysozyme activity increased with stocking density, while serum complement activity presented the opposite pattern. Serum cortisol and total protein levels did not show significant differences (P > 0.05) between experimental groups. The fish reared at high stocking density showed significantly lower osmolality and globulin values but higher albumin level. The HD group had significantly higher activities of catalase, glutathione peroxidase and superoxide dismutase, and malondialdehyde content in the liver when compared to the LD group. Comparative proteomics was used to determine the proteomic responses in livers of rainbow trout reared at high stocking density for 60 days. Out of nine protein spots showing altered abundance (>1.5-folds, P < 0.05), eight spots were successfully identified. Two proteins including apolipoprotein A-I-2 precursor and mitochondrial stress-70 protein were found to increase in HD group. The spots found to decrease in the HD group were identified as follows: 2-peptidylprolyl isomerase A, two isoforms of glyceraldehydes-3-phosphate dehydrogenase, an unnamed protein product similar to fructose-bisphosphate aldolase, 78 kDa glucose-regulated protein, and serum albumin 1 protein.

Abstract
The physiological responses of juvenile tambaqui (Colossoma macropomum) fed commercial feed supplemented with different concentrations of camu camu (Myrciaria dubia) were evaluated. The design was completely randomized, with treatments arranged in a factorial design with three proportions of camu camu (15%, 30% and 45%) and a control treatment (100% commercial diet), with four replicates per treatment. A total of 96 tambaqui specimens were used, with a mean initial weight of 11.69 ± 2.68 g and a mean length of 7.06 ± 0.44 cm. After 30 days, hematological parameters, metabolic variables, growth and fish swimming performance were evaluated. The different proportions of camu camu in the diet did not cause significant changes to the tambaqui's hematological parameters during the feeding period, except for hemoglobin (Hb) concentration and mean corpuscular hemoglobin concentration (MCHC) after the 30th day, and hematocrit (Ht) after the swimming stress test, which increased significantly (p < 0.05). The significant increases in metabolic variables, such as cortisol, glucose, proteins and triglycerides, and in hematologic variables after the Ucrit test reflect, respectively, biochemical adaptations for maintenance of the energy mobilization process and a regulatory necessity in tissue oxygen demand during intense exercise. Fish fed 15% and 30% camu camu gained the most weight and achieved the best swimming performance, respectively. The results for camu camu concentrations above 30% suggest a saturation of its intrinsic properties in the diet at this level and a loss of nutrients from the commercial feed replaced by the fruit, reducing productive performance and nutritional assimilation.

Abstract
Vitamin E is of importance for several physiological processes, some of which also apply to fish. Here, we conducted an experiment to assess the effect of environmental hypoxia and dietary vitamin E on oxidative status and tissue injury in a bottom dwelling carp,Cirrhinus mrigala(Ham., 1822). The four treatments combined oxygen availability (Normoxia/Hypoxua) and Vitamin E presence/absence. Lipid peroxidation parameters such as thiobarbituric acid reactive substances (TBAR), peroxide value (PV), polyunsaturated fatty acids/saturated fatty acid (PUFA/SFA) ratio, catalase (CAT), superoxide dismutase (SOD) and erythrocyte fragility were assessed. The results indicate that exposure to hypoxia elevates these parameters. However, the supplementation of vitamin E via the diet effectively reduced erythrocyte membrane damage (EF) and myeloperoxidase activity (MPO), which were enhanced by the exposure to hypoxia. Dietary vitamin E also improved antioxidant enzyme status in the hypoxia exposed fish, as indicated by the decreased catalase and superoxide dismutase activities. Vitamin E supplementation also compensated for increased levels of peroxide value, thiobarbituric acid reactive substances, and an increased polyunsaturated fatty acids/saturated fatty acid ratio resulting from the exposure to hypoxia. Overall, it can be concluded that fortification of vitamin E in the diet of this carp species, and possibly other fish that live under hypoxic conditions, can restore the antioxidant status and well-being to some extent.

Abstract
The study used the mixed probiotics of Bacillus amyloliquefaciens 54A and B. pumilus 47B isolated from striped catfish (Pangasianodon hypophthalmus) intestine aiming to stimulate growth performance, innate immunity, stress tolerance of striped catfish. The average weight gain (AWG), specific growth rate (SGR), and feed conversion ratio (FCR) were analyzed after fish were fed the mixture of probiotics (B. amyloliquefaciens 54A and B. pumilus 47B) at concentrations of 1 × 108, 3 × 108, and 5 × 108 CFU g-1 feed for 90 days. Immunity parameters, survival rate of fish challenged with Edwardsiella ictaluri and ammonia tolerance were also investigated. The amounts of B. amyloliquefaciens and B. pumilus were counted and identified by specific primer pairs of Ba1-F/Ba1-R, and 16-F/Bpu-R to confirm the presence of probiotics in fish intestine. The AWG (476.6 ± 7.81 g fish-1) of fish fed probiotics at 5 × 108 CFU g-1 was significant higher than the control (390 ± 25.7 g fish-1) after 90 days of feeding, but there was no significant (P > 0.05) effect of probiotics on FCR and SGR. Fish fed diet containing probiotics at 5 × 108 CFU g-1 also expressed resistance to E. ictaluri infection and higher immune parameters such as phagocytic activity, respiratory bursts, and lysozyme activity than the control. Stress response with ammonia showed significantly lower mortality rate (25%, 20% and 27%) of fish fed probiotics at all three levels of 1, 3 and 5 × 108 CFU g-1 than the fish fed control diet (75%). The study also demonstrated that the probiotics survived in the intestine of striped catfish after 90 days of feeding. Therefore, the dietary supplementation of a mixture of B. amyloliquefaciens and B. pumilus at 5 × 108 CFU g-1 can be used to improve the health and growth rate of striped catfish.

Abstract
The aim of this study was to evaluate the possible effects of diets supplemented with probiotics and different cinnamon levels (powder and essential oil) on immunological parameters of Nile tilapia after being subjected to acute stress by hypoxia. Three hundred and thirty juvenile male tilapia fish (66.08 ± 2.79 g) were distributed in 30 tanks of 100 L capacity (11/cage) with a water recirculation system. The animals were fed for 71 days with diets containing extruded cinnamon powder at different levels (0.5, 1, 1.5, 2%), cinnamon essential oil (0.05, 0.1, 0.15; 0.2%) and probiotics (0.4%), all in triplicate. At the end of the experiment, the fish (200.36 ± 19.88 g) of the different groups were subjected to stress by hypoxia. Hypoxia was achieved by capturing the animals with a net, keeping them out of the water for three minutes, and then sampling the blood 30 min after the procedure to determine the levels of cortisol, glucose, haematocrit, lysozyme, bactericidal index, total protein, and its fractions. The animals kept blood homeostasis after hypoxic stress. Diet supplementation with 0.5% cinnamon powder improved the fish immune response, since it resulted in an increase of 0.5% in γ-globulin level. Administration of 0.15% cinnamon essential oil resulted in an increase of α1 and α2-globulins, which may be reflected in increased lipid content of the carcass and the hepatosomatic index. More studies are necessary to better understand the effects of these additives for fish immunity.

Abstract
The present study was conducted to evaluate the effects of different L-alanyl-l-glutamine (Ala-Gln) feeding strategies on the growth performance, metabolism and crowding stress resistance related parameters in juvenile Jian carp (Cyprinus carpio var. Jian) under crowded condition (80 g/L). Juvenile Jian carp (initial weight 26.1 ± 0.6 g) were distributed into five groups which fed with graded concentrations (0% or 1.0%) of Ala-Gln for eight weeks. Control group (I, 0/0) fed with control diet (0% Ala-Gln) throughout the feeding trial. The other four groups employed different control and experimental diet feeding strategies ranging from two weeks control diet fed and two weeks experimental diet (1% Ala-Gln) fed (II, 0/2) to eight weeks experimental diet fed (V, 4/4). Results revealed that Mean weight gain (MEG) under all different feeding strategies of Ala-Gln were significantly higher than that of the control group (p < 0.05), and MEG of group II (201.90%) was even higher than that of group IV (184.70%). Liver glycogen and blood total protein of groups II, III and V were significantly higher than that in groups I and IV (p < 0.05). The highest level of serum thyroxine (10.07 ng/ml), insulin-like growth factor-I (52.40 ng/ml) and insulin (9.73 μ IU/mL) were observed in group V. However, diet supplemented with Ala-Gln did not affect the levels of serum glucose, cortisol and catecholamine in fish. The mRNA expression of GR1a, GR1b and GR2 were also significantly changed in Ala-Gln supplementation groups compared with control group (p < 0.05). After fish intraperitoneally injected with virulent Aeromonas hydrophila, the fish survival rates were significantly increased in all Ala-Gln supplementation groups compared with control group (p < 0.05). Results from the present experiment showed the importance of dietary supplementation of Ala-Gln in benefaction of the growth performance, metabolism and crowding stress resistance in Jian carp breeding. The optimal feeding strategy was alternatively fed with control diet and then experimental diet at an interval of two weeks for juvenile Jian carp under crowded condition.

Abstract
Yellow catfish (Pelteobagrus fulvidraco) has become a commercially important fish species in China and eastern Asia. High-density aquaculture has led to congestion and excessive stress and contributed to bacterial infection outbreaks that have caused high mortality. We investigated the effects of dietary supplementation with astaxanthin and emodin alone and in combination on the growth and stress resistance of yellow catfish. After 60 days of feeding, each group of fish (control, astaxanthin, emodin, and astaxanthin plus emodin (combination) groups) was exposed to acute crowding stress for 24 h, and a subsample of fish from the four groups was challenged with the bacterial septicemia pathogen Proteus mirabilis after the end of the crowding stress experiment. Compared with the control, the astaxanthin and emodin groups showed increases in serum total protein (TP), hepatic superoxide dismutase (SOD) activity and hepatic heat shock proteins 70 (HSP70) mRNA levels at 12 and 24 h after the initiation of crowding stress. The combination group exhibited increases in alanine aminotransferase (ALT) activity, aspartate aminotransferase (AST) activity, serum TP, hepatic SOD activity and hepatic HSP70 mRNA levels within 24 h after the initiation of crowding stress. However, decreases relative to the control were observed in the serum cortisol and glucose contents in the three treatment groups at 12 and 24 h after the initiation of crowding stress, in ALT and AST activity in the astaxanthin and emodin group at 24 h after the initiation of crowding stress, and in the serum lysozyme activity, serum alkaline phosphatase (ALP) activity, and hepatic catalase (CAT) and malondialdehyde (MDA) activity in the combination group at 24 h after the initiation of crowding stress. Additionally, the cumulative mortality after P. mirabilis infection was lower in all three treatment groups (57.00%-70.33%) than in the control (77.67%). Dietary supplementation with astaxanthin and emodin decreased the specific growth rate (SGR) and weight gain (WG) of healthy yellow catfish, although significant differences in mortality were not observed. These results indicate that dietary supplementation with 80 mg/kg astaxanthin and 150 mg/kg emodin can improve the anti-oxidative capabilities, hepatic HSP70 levels, and resistance to acute crowding stress of yellow catfish. Finally, an appropriate strategy for enhance yellow catfish stress resistance and disease resistance is proposed.

Effects of oxidised dietary fish oil and high-dose vitamin E supplementation on growth performance, feed utilisation and antioxidant defence enzyme activities of juvenile large yellow croaker (Larmichthys crocea). Abstract
This study was conducted to elucidate the effects of oxidised dietary lipids and high-dose vitamin E (VE) on growth performance and immune responses of large yellow croaker. Juvenile fish (initial average body weight of 7·82 (sem 0·68) g) were fed diets containing either fresh fish oil (fresh diet, peroxide value (POV)=1·72 mEq/kg) or fish oil oxidised to varying degrees (oxidised diets, POV=28·29-104·21 mEq/kg), with or without supplementary 600 mg VE/kg diet, for 10 weeks in floating cages. Growth was significantly lower and feed intake (g/100 g body weight per d) was higher in fish fed the oxidised diet. Supplementation with VE increased the growth of fish fed the oxidised diets, but significantly decreased the growth of fish fed the fresh diet. Hepatosomatic index increased with increasing dietary POV and decreased with VE supplementation. Hepatic catalase activity, superoxide dismutase (SOD) activity and malondialdehyde content were significantly higher in fish fed the oxidised diets, and these values decreased significantly following VE supplementation. However, hepatic SOD activity was enhanced by VE supplementation in fish fed the fresh diet. Air-exposure mortality was significantly increased by dietary POV, and this effect was inhibited by VE supplementation. These results suggest that dietary oxidised fish oil could stimulate the activities of antioxidant defence enzymes in stressed large yellow croaker. High-dose VE supplementation can alleviate oxidative stress of large yellow croaker fed oxidised fish oil, but can exert deleterious effects on fish in the absence of oxidative stress.

Abstract
This study aimed to investigate the effects of dietary emodin, high-dose vitamin E and their combination on the growth of Megalobrama amblycephala and its resistance to acute crowding stress. The fish were randomly divided into four groups: a control group fed with basal diet, and three treatment groups fed with basal diet supplemented with 60 mg/kg emodin (the emodin group), 500 mg/kg vitamin E (the vit E group), and 60 mg/kg emodin together with 500 mg/kg vitamin E (the combination group). After 60 days, the fish were exposed to acute crowding stress for 24 h. The results showed that the weight gain of the vit E group, specific growth rate of the vit E group, total serum protein concentration (TP) of the vit E group, serum lysozyme activity of the emodin group, serum superoxide dismutase (SOD) activity of the emodin group, hepatic heat shock protein 70 (HSP70) levels of the vit E group and the emodin group, and serum alanine aminotransferase (ALT) activity of the combination group significantly increased while the weight gain and specific growth rate of the combination group significantly decreased compared with the control group before stress. After crowding stress, the vit E group had improved serum TP 12 h post-stress, hepatic SOD activity 24 h post-stress, and hepatic HSP70 mRNA levels 12 and 24 h post-stress while the emodin group had enhanced serum SOD activity 12 and 24 h post-stress and hepatic HSP70 mRNA levels 12 and 24 h post-stress, as compared with the control. However, the serum cortisol content of the three treatment groups 12 and 24 h post-stress, ALT activity in the vit E group and emodin group 24 h post-stress, and serum alkaline phosphatase and liver catalase activity in the combination group 24 h post-stress were lower than those in the control group. The cumulative mortality was lower in the emodin, vit E, and combination group after Aeromonas hydrophila infection compared with the control group. Therefore, dietary supplementation with 60 mg/kg emodin or 500 mg/kg vitamin E can improve HSP70 mRNA levels and antioxidant capabilities, resistance to crowding stress, and growth in M. amblycephala. However, the combination of emodin and vit E does not have a synergistic effect in M. amblycephala.

Abstract
Probiotics play an important role in growth increment, immune enhancement and stress mitigation in fish. Increasing temperature is a major concern in present aquaculture practices as it markedly deteriorates the health condition and reduces the growth in fish. In order to explore the possibilities of using probiotics as a counter measure for temperature associated problems, a 30 days feeding trial was conducted to study the hemato-immunological and apoptosis response of Labeo rohita (8.3±0.4 g) reared at different water temperatures, fed with or without dietary supplementation of a probiotic mixture (PM) consisting of Bacillus subtilis, Lactococcus lactis and Saccharomyces cerevisiae) (1011 cfu kg−1). Three hundred and sixty fish were randomly distributed into eight treatment groups in triplicates, namely, T1(28°C+BF(Basal feed)+PM), T2(31°C+BF+PM), T3(34°C+BF+PM), T4(37°C+BF+PM), T5(28°C+BF), T6(31°C+BF), T7(34°C+BF) and T8(37°C+BF). A significant increase (P<0.01) in weight gain percentage was observed in the probiotic fed fish even when reared at higher water temperature (34–37°C). Respiratory burst assay, blood glucose, erythrocyte count, total serum protein, albumin, alkaline phosphatase and acid phosphatase were significantly higher (P<0.01) in the probiotic fed groups compared to the non-probiotic fed groups. A significant (P<0.01) effect of rearing temperature and dietary probiotic mixture on serum myeloperoxidase activity, HSP70 level and immunoglobulin production was observed. Degree of apoptosis in different tissues was also significantly reduced in probiotic-supplemented groups. Hence, the present results show that a dietary PM could be beneficial in enhancing the immune status of the fish and also help in combating the stress caused to the organism by higher rearing water temperature.

Abstract
Two consecutive studies were conducted to evaluate the dietary supplementation of citrus by-products (CB) fermented with probiotic bacteria on growth performance, feed utilization, innate immune responses and disease resistance of juvenile olive flounder. In Experiment I, five diets were formulated to contain 0% (control) or 3% four different CB fermented with Bacillus subtilis (BS), Enterococcus faecium (EF), Lactobacillus rhamnosus (LR) and L. plantarum (LP) (designated as CON, CBF-BS, CBF-EF, CBF-LR and CBF-LP, respectively). During 10 weeks of a feeding trial, growth performance and feed efficiency were not significantly different among all the fish groups. However, fish fed CBF containing diets had significantly higher survivals than the CON group. Disease resistance of fish against Edwardsiella tarda was increased by the fermentation of CB. In Experiment II, we chose the BS as a promising probiotic and formulated five diets to contain 0%, 2%, 4%, 6% and 8% CBF-BS. Growth performance was not significantly affected by the CBF-BS supplementation during 6 weeks of a feeding trial. Innate immunity of fish was significantly enhanced by CBF-BS supplementation. Myeloperoxidase and lysozyme activities were increased in a dose-dependent manner by dietary CBF-BS inclusions. In a consecutive challenge test against E. tarda, an increased disease resistance was found by CBF-BS supplementation. These studies indicate that the fermentation process of CB with probiotic has beneficial effects on innate immunity and thereby increases disease resistance of olive flounder against E. tarda. Abstract
Ability of ascorbic acid (vitamin C) to attenuate oxidative damage was evaluated in liver and brain tissues of Oreochromis niloticus (O. niloticus) experimentally exposed to sublethal concentrations of chlorpyrifos (CPF). O. niloticus was exposed to sublethal concentrations of CPF at 12 μg/L (CPF1) and 24 μg/L (CPF2) for 96 h. The fish of vitamin C (Vit C) and CPF2 + Vit C groups were fed with Vit C supplemented diet (200 mg Vit C/100 g feed). A significant increase in thiobarbituric acid-reactive substances (TBARS) level (P < 0.05) was observed in brain of CPF-exposed fish although liver TBARS level was not changed compared to control group. This result showed that lipid peroxidation (LPO) was elevated in brain of fish exposed to CPF. Glutathione peroxidase (GSH-Px) activity in liver and brain tissues was significantly elevated (P < 0.05) by exposure to CPF1 and CPF2. Catalase (CAT) activity was significantly increased (P < 0.05) in liver but decreased in brain of treated fish by CPF2 concentration. Superoxide dismutase (SOD) activity was decreased in liver, but increased in brain by exposure to CPF1 and CPF2 concentrations. Levels of TBARS were increased in brain of CPF-treated animals, but tended to decrease by the effect of Vit C. Vit C treatment for CPF-intoxicated animals normalized the otherwise raised activities of GSH-Px, CAT, and SOD within normal limits. The results clearly indicate that exposure to CPF caused a dose-dependent increase in oxidative stress brain and to a lesser extend in liver of fish and the ability of Vit C to attenuate CPF-induced oxidative damage.

Abstract
This study evaluated the effects of dietary supplementation with 0.3% Saccharomyces cerevisiae yeast cell wall and of vaccination against Streptococcus agalactiae on the cellular component of acute inflammation induced in the coelomic cavity of Nile tilapia Oreochromis niloticus and on survival of the fish after challenge. A total of 84 tilapia of mean (±SD) weight 125.0 ± 1.5 g were distributed among twelve 310 l fiberglass tanks according to a 2 × 2 × 3 factorial design in the following manner: with and without supplementation; 2 stimulations (oily solution without S. agalactiae vaccine and vaccination); 15 d later all fish were intracoelomically challenged with 108 CFU ml-1 of a homologous strain of S. agalactiae, and evaluated after 6, 24 and 48 h, with 7 replicates. The fish received the non-supplemented or supplemented diet for a total of 77 d. The vaccination was performed on the 60th day, intracoelomically, as a single injection of 0.5 ml of the vaccine containing 108 CFU ml-1. Fifteen days later, all the fish were challenged with S. agalactiae by means of an intracoelomic inoculation of 108 CFU ml-1. No mortality was observed among the supplemented fish. The fish that were fed the non-supplemented diet and immunized with the bacterium presented a mortality rate of 28.5%. Among the non-supplemented and non-immunized fish, the mortality rate was 38.09%. Supplementation, in both vaccinated and non-vaccinated fish, induced larger accumulations of thrombocytes, lymphocytes and macrophages at the inflammatory focus. The results suggest that supplementation with 0.3% yeast cell wall, in both vaccinated and non-vaccinated fish, improved the inflammatory response of the fish and protected against the challenge. Vaccination increased the defense response, but the effect was stronger when associated with supplementation with S. cerevisiae.

Abstract
An 8-week feeding experiment was conducted to investigate the effect of dietary vitamin E on the physiological response to handling stress in juvenile beluga Huso huso. Fish were fed six experimental diets supplemented with 0, 25, 50,100, 200, or 400 mg Dl-all-rac-alpha-tocopherol acetate/kg diet. At the end of the experiment, the fish in each tank were subjected to acute handling and air exposure stress. Cortisol and glucose were measured as the primary hormonal and secondary metabolic responses to the stressors, both before and 3 h after application of the stressors. The growth parameters and feed utilization rates were significantly lower in fish fed the diet not supplemented with vitamin E than in fish fed diets supplemented with vitamin E. Cortisol concentration was not affected by dietary treatment but glucose concentration was. Fish fed vitamin E at 0, 25, 100, and 400 mg/kg diet had higher concentrations of glucose than those fed vitamin E at 50 and 200 mg/kg. However, fish fed diets with 50 and 200 mg/kg exhibited higher growth rates. These results indicate that dietary vitamin E has some effect on plasma glucose but no effect on plasma cortisol. In general, when the stressors were applied to belugas, the glucose and cortisol responses were relatively low. This may be due to higher resistance and lower physiological responses to these types of stressors by this species or by chondrosteans in general.

Abstract
Scuticociliates are extracellular histophagous parasites that affect farmed fish worldwide. One of the most common pathogenic species is Miamiensis avidus, a pathogen of New Zealand groper (Polyprion oxygeneios). The aim of this study was to characterise both the host (groper)-parasite (M. avidus) immune interactions and the possible protective role of dietary sodium ascorbate. Head-kidney leucocytes (HKLs) from naturally infected adult groper showed decreased respiratory burst response and peroxidase (Px) levels than healthy individuals. Infected groper also had significantly higher serum Px levels compared to controls. Myeloperoxidase (MPO) was inhibited in the head-kidney (HK) whereas MPO(+) cells were observed in the skin and muscle lesions. The inhibition of the innate immune responses was further studied in experimental infections with M. avidus, which confirmed depletion of Px inside leucocytes and marked increases in serum Px in infected individuals. Groper juveniles were fed a diet supplemented with sodium ascorbate (Vitamin C) (2g Kg(-1)) for 21 days and then challenged by subcutaneous injection or immersion exposure with live M. avidus cells. No protection was observed in the sodium ascorbate fed groper compared to the control diet following challenge by either injection or immersion. In vitro assays showed that sodium ascorbate itself results in the inhibition of Px and respiratory burst of groper HKLs, supporting the results obtained in vivo. Our results show that histophagous protozoa such as M. avidus hamper innate immune defences of fish hosts and that dietary sodium ascorbate does not protect groper against experimental infection with this parasite.

Abstract
Ranched southern bluefin tuna Thunnus maccoyii were fed baitfishes supplemented with vitamins (predominantly E and C) or vitamins and immunostimulants, nucleotides and β-glucans, over 12 weeks after transfer and monitored for enhancement in immune response, health and performance through their 19 week grow-out period. Fish from two different tows were sampled separately at three different sampling points: at transfer to grow-out pontoons, at 8 weeks post-transfer and at harvest, 19 weeks post-transfer. Lysozyme activity was enhanced during vitamin supplementation compared to control fish. Performance (i.e. survival, condition index and crude fat), health (i.e. blood plasma variables including pH, osmolality, cortisol, lactate and glucose) and alternative complement activity were not commonly improved through diet supplementation. There were some tow-specific improvements in performance through vitamin supplementation including survival, selected parasite prevalence and intensity, and alternative complement activity. Immunostimulant supplementation also showed a tow-specific improvement in plasma cortisol level. Tow-specific responses may suggest that life history, previous health condition and husbandry can affect the success of vitamin and immunostimulant enhancement of immune response, health and performance of ranched T. maccoyii.

Abstract
This study was designed to determine the effect of dietary vitamin E on growth, some hematological and immunological parameters and muscle proximate analysis of beluga Huso huso. Experimental fish were fed practical diets supplemented with 0, 25, 50, 100, 200 and 400 mg Dl-all-rac-α-tocopherol acetate kg diet(-1) for 8 weeks. 360 fish (mean initial weight 49.7 ± 0.1 g) were distributed into eighteen 785 L circular concrete tanks and each diet was fed to triplicate groups of fish. At the end of experiment (8 weeks), growth parameters such as final weight (FW), weight gain (WG), total length (TL), feed conversion ratio (FCR), specific growth rate (SGR), protein efficiency ratio (PER), condition factor (CF), hepatosomatic index (HSI), muscle composition, and some physiological indicators, including hematological and immunological parameters, such as hematocrit (Hct), total leukocyte count (WBC), lymphocyte, neutrophil, eosinophil and monocyte, cortisol, glucose, erythrocyte fragility, lysozyme and complement activity were determined. FW, WG, SGR, PER and CF in fish fed unsupplemented vitamin E were significantly lower than those fish fed the other five diets. However FW and PER in fish fed control diet had not significant differences with fish fed at 400 mg kg(-1). FCR were significantly higher in fish fed control diet than other groups. TL and survival rate had no significant differences among fish groups. HSI in fish fed 0 and 25 mg vitamin E kg diet(-1) were significantly lower than the other treatments. Muscle composition analysis showed no significant differences among the treatments. Erythrocyte fragility, Hct, WBC, lymphocyte, neutrophil, eosinophil and monocyte, lysozyme and complement activities were not significant. Also cortisol and glucose concentrations had not significant differences between treatments. Results indicated that vitamin E had no significantly effect on muscle proximate analysis, hematological and immunological parameters of sub-yearling beluga but has a direct effect on growth performance of beluga sturgeon and this vitamin is an essential nutrient required for normal growth in this species.

Abstract
This study was carried out to examine the effect of Artemia urmiana nauplii enriched with HUFA, and vitamins C and E on stress tolerance, hematocrit, and biochemical parameters of great sturgeon, Huso huso juveniles. Cod liver oil (EPA 18% and DHA 12%), ascorbyl-6-palmitate and alpha-tocopherol acetate were used as lipid, and vitamin C and E sources, respectively. Beluga juveniles at the stage of first feeding (69.7 +/- 5.9 mg body weight) were randomly divided into five treatments and three tanks were assigned to each diet. All fish groups were fed non-enriched Artemia for the initial 5 days and then fed enriched Artemia for 7 days. Juveniles were fed with Artemia enriched with HUFA + 20% vitamin C (C group); HUFA + 20% vitamin E-enriched Artemia nauplii (E group); HUFA + 20% vitamin C + 20% vitamin E (C and E group); HUFA without vitamins (HUFA) and non-enriched Artemia (control). After the period of enrichment, Juveniles were fed with Daphnia sp. from the 13th to the 40th day. At day 40, the fish were transferred directly from fresh water (0.5 ppt) to brackish water (6 ppt for 4 days and 12 ppt for 2 days) and warm water (from 27 to 33 degrees C) to evaluate juvenile resistance to salinity and thermal shocks. Moreover, all treatments were separately exposed to freshwater in tanks with the same capacity as used for osmotic and thermal tests (as fresh water control). The addition of vitamins C, E, and C + E to HUFA significantly increased fish resistance to 12 ppt salinity and temperature stress tests, whereas survival was not significantly different among challenges at 6 ppt. There was no significant difference in the hematocrit index under stress conditions. Enrichment had significant influence on plasma Na(+) level in the C group on the 4th day at 6 ppt. Na(+) and Ca(2+) concentrations in C, E, and C and E groups on the 1st day at 12 ppt, and Ca(2+) level in E group on the 2nd day at 12 ppt were lower than the other groups. The glucose level in the C and C and E groups was lower than the other treatments on the 1st day at 12 ppt and the 2nd day at 33 degrees C. Regardless of Artemia enrichment, plasma ions (Na(+), K(+), Ca(2+), and Mg(2+)) and glucose concentrations in fish exposed to salinity stress tests were higher than fish in fresh water. Glucose concentration in plasma also increased after 2 days at 33 degrees C. Although most of our results were not significantly different, the use of vitamins C, E, and HUFA in Artemia enrichment can improve Juveniles tolerance under stress conditions, and regardless of enrichment, these data show that beluga juveniles are partly sensitive to high salinity and temperature.

Abstract
The amelioration effect of dietary high protein and vitamin C against stress was evaluated in spotted murrel, Channa punctatus, exposed to endosulfan. Two hundred and forty fish (average weight: 27.01 g/fish), distributed equally into 4 different groups (control, T(1), T(2), and T(3)), each with 6 replicates were fed with control (40% crude protein, CP and 0.1% vitamin C), T(1) (40% CP and 0.1% vitamin C), T(2) (50% CP and 0.1% vitamin C), and T(3) (50% CP and 0.2% vitamin C) diets for 90 days. Groups fed T(1), T(2), and T(3) diets were exposed to sublethal endosulfan concentration, whereas the control was maintained without endosulfan exposure. Results indicated significant reduction in the growth performance, survival, and activities of lactate dehydrogenase (liver and muscle), malate dehydrogenase (liver and muscle), enzymes of protein metabolism (aspartate amino transferase in liver and alanine amino transferase in liver and muscle), acetyl choline esterase (brain), alkaline phosphatase activity (liver), and ATPase (gill) enzymes of group fed control diet and exposed to endosulfan. However, endosulfan exposed fish fed high CP and vitamin C diet exhibited significant (P<0.05) improvement in their growth performance and metabolic enzyme activities. Further, high CP and vitamin C diet reduced endosulfan accumulation in the muscle. Overall results indicate that vitamin C (0.2%) supplementation in high CP (50%) diet improves growth, metabolism, and reduce endosulfan bioaccumulation in C. punctatus.

Abstract
Rainbow trout maintained at crowding or noncrowding conditions were fed on five experimental diets that were formulated considering two levels of vitamin E (25.6 and 275.6 mg/kg diet), vitamin C (0 and 1000 mg/kg diet) and HUFA (12.5 and 30.5 g/kg diet): -E-HUFA, -E+HUFA, +E-HUFA, +E+HUFA, -C+E+HUFA. Hematological parameters, the activity of some antioxidant enzymes and lipid peroxidation from RBC were evaluated. The SOD isoenzyme pattern was analyzed by nondenaturing PAGE. Hematological response to crowding stress was manifested by increased hemoglobin and RBC count in most of the crowded groups. Antioxidant enzyme activity was clearly affected by dietary HUFA levels, with uncrowded fish fed on +HUFA diets showing a higher SOD activity compared to those fed on -HUFA diets. In uncrowded groups, only one CuZn-SOD isozyme was detected, whereas in the crowded fish a great variability was revealed with up to five isozymes. G6PDH activity was increased in uncrowded -E+HUFA fish compared to the remaining groups. Lipid peroxidation was significantly increased in -E+HUFA fish regardless of fish density. Data supported the negative correlation of lipid peroxidation and hematocrit or hemoglobin explained by decreased erythrocyte stability. Dietary imbalances in vitamin E and HUFA supplementation may promote oxidative stress which triggers hematological deterioration, which in turn would affect the whole hematological status and ultimately fish welfare.

Foram utilizadas três dietas experimentais com diferentes níveis de vitamina C (16, 500 e 1000mg de vitamina C/kg), fornecidas durante os 14 dias anteriores à simulação do transporte que se estendeu por 14 horas. O tratamento que continha 16mg de vitamina C/kg foi o que apresentou a glicemia mais elevada logo após a simulação, 108,5mg/dl imediatamente após a simulação e 91mg/dl 12 horas após a simulação. A concentração de 1000mg de vitamina C/kg foi a mais eficiente no controle do aumento da glicemia, 94,6mg/dl imediatamente após a simulação e 74,4mg/dl 12 horas após a simulação. Para a concentração de 500mg de vitamina C/kg foram observados os níveis de 91,4mg/dl imediatamente após a simulação e 103,8mg/dl 12 horas após a simulação. Os valores do hematócrito não apresentaram variação significativa (P>0,05). A suplementação com 1000mg de vitamina C/kg por 14 dias anteriores ao transporte pode ser utilizada de forma profilática em alevinos de tilápia nilótica para amenizar o aumento da glicemia relacionado ao estresse.

Abstract
Juvenile matrinxã (Brycon amazonicus) were fed with different dietary vitamin C (ascorbic acid or AA) concentrations for 2 months in order to evaluate its effect on the physiological condition of this species. Five treatments were tested: Reference diet-RD (350 mg AA kg(-1) and 45% crude protein commercial feed); C400, C500, C600 and C800 with supplementation of 400, 500, 600 and 800 mg AA kg(-1). Fish fed 800 mg AA kg(-1) supplemented diets presented greater weight gain and survival. Hematocrit, hemoglobin concentrations and erythrocytes showed significant increase (p<0.05) in C600 and C800 relatively to the others. Total leukocyte values were significantly higher in fish fed vitamin C supplemented diets relatively to those fed RD and leukocytes count of C600 and C800 were the highest among the treatments. Monocytes were the only cells of fish defense mechanism that presented variation, and C600 and C800 presented the lowest values (P<0.05). Glucose level was significantly different relatively to RD only in C400 and the plasmatic total protein values for fish fed vitamin C supplemented diets were higher than for fish fed the RD. Fish plasmatic ions (Na(+) and Cl(-)) were significantly lower for C500, C600 and C800 relatively to C400 and RD. The physiological profile and the growth performance of matrinxã suggest that diet supplemented with 800 mg AA kg(-1) can improve its performance and increase the survival rate.

Abstract
This study evaluated the influence of diets supplemented with 500, 800, 1200 mg kg-1 of vitamin C (ascorbic acid or AA) and vitamin E (alpha-tocopherol or alpha-T) on the physiological responses of pirarucu fed for 2 months. Weight and mortality were not affected by dietary vitamin type or their concentrations. Significant increase (p<0.05) on the red blood cells count was obtained on treatments with 800 and 1200 mg AA kg-1 and on the hemoglobin concentration on treatment with 500 mg alpha-T kg-1 relatively to control. Mean corpuscular volume presented a significant decrease (p<0.05) on treatment with 800 and 1200 mg AA kg-1 when compared to control. Mean corpuscular hemoglobin concentration was significantly high (p<0.05) on treatment with 500 mg alpha-T kg-1. Only in vitamin C treatments, we noticed a significant increase (p<0.05) in the number of leucocytes relative to control. All fish in the vitamin-supplemented treatments, except 500 mg AA kg-1, had high total protein values compared to control. Fish treated with 800 or 1200 mg alpha-T kg-1 also showed increases in plasma glucose concentrations. Our results suggest that 800 and 1200 mg AA kg-1 are probably the most suitable concentrations for pirarucu diets, although high vitamin E diets are not necessary for quantitative leucocyte increases for this species.

Abstract
The protective effects of vitamins C and E against oxidative stress were evaluated in various tissues of thornfish Terapon jarbua exposed to copper. Preliminary bioassay tests performed with copper and T. jarbua revealed that 4.0, 2.5 and 1.0 mg L(-1) of copper were lethal (LC(100)), medial lethal (LC(50)) and sublethal (LC(0)) respectively. Oxidative stress parameters viz. lipid peroxidation, superoxide dismutase, catalase, glutathione peroxidase, and glutathione were evaluated in control and experimental fishes. Lipid peroxidation activity increased in tissues of copper exposed fishes, while the antioxidant system exhibited a reduction in their activity. On the contrary copper stressed fishes fed with vitamins C and E enriched pellet feed showed significant reduction in lipid peroxidation activity and the antioxidant levels increased reaching near normal levels comparable to control values. Bioaccumulation of copper was studied in addition to oxidative stress. Substantial copper residue was detected in the tissues of T. jarbua exposed to copper and the level of copper in tissues reduced when the fishes were treated with vitamins ensuring copper depuration and thereby protecting them against stress. We concluded that vitamin supplementation offered significant reduction of the oxidative stress mediated by copper and we discuss the possible application of vitamins in costal aquaculture process.

Abstract
This study evaluated the efficacy of dietary vitamin C (ascorbic acid or AA), vitamin E (alpha-tocopherol or alpha-T), and C+E supplementation on the blood parameters of Arapaima gigas grown in net cages for 45 days. Four treatments were tested: control (commercial feed); C800; E500 and C+E (800+500) with supplementation of 800 mg AA kg(-1), 500 mg alpha-T kg(-1) and 800+500 mg AA+alpha-T kg(-1), respectively. Hematocrit (Ht), red blood cells (RBC), and hemoglobin concentration (Hb) (oxidative status indicators), thrombocytes and leukocytes (immunological indicators), plasma protein and glucose were evaluated. Fish fed vitamin C and C+E supplemented diets showed greater weight gain and survival. Dietary vitamin C and C+E diet supplementation resulted in increased Ht, Hb, RBC, MCHC, total leukocytes, total proteins, thrombocytes and eosinophils compared to the control and alpha-T. The alpha-tocopherol-supplemented diet reduced the number of total thrombocytes, lymphocytes and neutrophils and increased glucose and eosinophils relatively to the control. In general, leukocytes and thrombocytes were good indicators of the efficiency of vitamin on the defense mechanism of the A. gigas reared in cages. Results indicate that high alpha-T diet supplementation provides no benefit for the maintenance of the oxidative or the immunological status of A. gigas. However, it was demonstrated that high dietary AA improves A. gigas immunological status. Red blood cell indices and immune system indicators showed no synergistic effect between the vitamins after supplementing the A. gigas diet with alpha-T+AA.

Abstract
In this study, the effect of alpha-tocopherol on the antioxidant capacity of rainbow trout (Oncorhynchus mykiss) was determined. For this purpose, activities of antioxidant enzymes such as catalase (CAT), peroxidase (POD) and glutathione reductase (GSSG-Rx) were investigated. Enzyme activities were measured at 0 (control), 1, 3 and 5 h after alpha-tocopherol injection. In addition, the levels of malondialdehyde (MDA) as a lipid peroxidation marker were determined in the erythrocytes. The results showed that alpha-tocopherol significantly activated the CAT, POD and GSSG-Rx enzymes as compared with the enzyme activities found in the controls (p < 0.05). However, MDA levels were significantly decreased by alpha-tocopherol treatment (p < 0.05). The results suggest that alpha-tocopherol may have a pro-oxidant tendency at a high dose and cause mild oxidative stress which could modulate signal transduction cascades, redirect gene expression, and influence many cellular responses such as proliferation, differentiation, and reproduction. For this reason, alpha-tocopherol should be used carefully in all applications in relation to fish.

Abstract
The complement system plays an essential role in alerting the host of the presence of potential pathogens, as well as in their clearing. In addition, activation of the complement system contributes significantly in the orchestration and development of an acquired immune response. Although the complement system has been studied extensively in mammals, considerably less is known about complement in lower vertebrates, in particular teleost fish. Here we review our current understanding of the role of fish complement in phagocytosis, respiratory burst, chemotaxis and cell lysis. We also thoroughly review the specific complement components characterized thus far in various teleost fish species. In addition, we provide a comprehensive compilation on complement host-pathogen interactions, in which we analyze the role of fish complement in host defense against bacteria, viruses, fungi and parasites. From a more physiological perspective, we evaluate the knowledge accumulated on the influence of stress, nutrition and environmental factors on levels of complement activity and components, and how the use of this knowledge can benefit the aquaculture industry. Finally, we propose future directions that are likely to advance our understanding of the molecular evolution, structure and function of complement proteins in teleosts. Such studies will be pivotal in providing new insights into complement-related mechanisms of recognition and defense that are essential to maintaining fish homeostasis.

Abstract
The dimer of lysozyme was administered to carp (Cyprinus carpio L.) in an attempt to reduce the suppression of response in fish exposed to the cypermethrin. Experimental studies were carried out on cells isolated from blood and pronephros of carp. In the in vivo studies fish were intoxicated with cypermethrin (synthetic pesticide) at a dose of LD5. After 24 h fish were injected intraperitoneally with a modulator-the dimer of lysozyme (KLP-602) at a dose of 0.02 mg/kg of body weight. In the study we determined the metabolic activity of phagocyte cells and the proliferative ability of lymphocytes stimulated by ConA and LPS. The results indicate that this modulator is useful for stimulation of cellular and humoral immunity after experimentally induced suppression by selected pesticide.

Abstract
The main innate cellular immune responses of gilthead seabream (Sparus auratus L.) leucocytes were evaluated after in vitro incubation with human lactoferrin (Lf). Isolated head-kidney leucocytes were incubated with 0 (control) to 1 mg ml(-1) Lf-supplemented culture medium for 30, 120, 240 or 360 min and assayed for viability, peroxidase content, and respiratory burst, phagocytic and cytotoxic activities. Only respiratory burst activity was found to increase when using the highest Lf concentration (1 mg ml(-1)) and long incubation times (more than 120 min). Seabream were fed Lf-supplemented diets (0, control, 50, 100 or 200 mg kg(-1) diet). After 1 or 2 weeks of administration the leucocyte peroxidase content, respiratory burst, phagocytic and cytotoxic activities as a measure of cellular immune responses, as well as serum peroxidase and complement activity as a measure of humoral immune responses were evaluated. The results showed that Lf feeding at 100 mg kg(-1) diet for 1 week enhanced the cellular innate immune responses although only the cytotoxic activity did so significantly. The humoral immune response was not influenced by Lf feeding. In conclusion, Lf seems to affect innate immune cellular activity, mainly respiratory burst and natural cytotoxic activity. The possible use of Lf as an immunostimulant for farmed gilthead seabream is discussed.

Abstract
Considering that the excessive usage of vitamin E causes hypervitaminosis and thus reduces blood erythrocyte concentrations, therefore it is worth studying how its pharmacological dosage affects the activity of carbonic anhydrase (CA) enzyme found in erythrocytes of rainbow trout (Oncorhynchus mykiss) in vitro and in vivo. Vitamin E inhibited CA enzyme and the IC50 value of the vitamin was 0.039 mM in vitro. Similarly, it was seen that vitamin E inhibited CA enzyme activity after the first hour following vitamin E injections in vivo. The activities of CA in groups of trout given vitamin E injection were measured at 1, 3 and 5 h and the corresponding activities were found to be 772.7 +/- 290.5 (P < 0.05), 1286.4 +/- 378.2 and 1005.7 +/- 436.1 enzyme units (EU) g Hb(-1). The difference over the control was significant (P < 0.05) in the first hour and insignificant at 3 and 5 h (P > 0.05). The activity of CA in the control, which did not contain vitamin E, was determined as 1597.7 +/- 429.0 EU g Hb(-1).
