Abstract
BACKGROUND Bioelectrical impedance analysis (BIA) and dual-energy X-ray absorptiometry (DXA) serves as common modalities for body composition assessment. This study was aimed to evaluate the agreement between BIA and DXA measures in UK Biobank. METHODS UK Biobank participants with body fat mass (FM) and fat-free mass (FFM) estimates obtained through BIA (Tanita BC418MA) and DXA concurrently were included. Correlation between BIA and DXA-derived estimates were assessed with Lin's concordance correlation coefficients. Bland-Altman and Passing-Boblok analyses were performed to quantify the difference and agreement between BIA and DXA. Multivariable linear regression was used to identify predictors influencing the differences. Finally, prediction models were developed to calibrate BIA measures against DXA. RESULTS The analysis included 34437 participants (female 51.4%, mean age 64.1 years at imaging assessment). BIA and DXA measurements were highly correlated (Lin's concordance correlation coefficient 0.94 for FM and 0.94 for FFM). BIA (Tanita BC418MA) underestimates FM overall by 1.84 kg (23.77 vs. 25.61, p < 0.01), and overestimated FFM overall by 2.56 kg (52.49 vs. 49.93, p < 0.01). The BIA-DXA differences were associated with FM, FFM, BMI and waist circumference. The developed prediction models showed overall good performance in calibrating BIA data. CONCLUSION Our analysis exhibited strong correlation between BIA (Tanita BC418MA)- and DXA-derived body composition measures at a population level in UK Biobank. However, the BIA-DXA differences were observed at individual level and associated with individual anthropometric measures. Future studies may explore the use of prediction models to enhance the calibration of BIA measures for more accurate assessments in UK Biobank.

Abstract
The beneficial effects of sodium-glucose cotransporter 2 (SGLT2) inhibitors in people with type 2 diabetes (T2D) and metabolic dysfunction-associated steatotic liver disease (MASLD) have been suggested in several reports based on serological markers, imaging data, and histopathology associated with steatotic liver disease. However, evidence regarding their long-term effects is currently insufficient. In this retrospective observational study, 34 people with T2D and MASLD, treated with SGLT2 inhibitors, were examined by proton density fat fraction derived by magnetic resonance imaging (MRI-PDFF) and other clinical data before, one year after the treatment. Furthermore, 22 of 34 participants underwent MRI-PDFF five years after SGLT2 inhibitors were initiated. HbA1c decreased from 8.9 ± 1.8% to 7.8 ± 1.0% at 1 year (p = 0.006) and 8.0 ± 1.1% at 5 years (p = 0.122). Body weight and fat mass significantly reduced from baseline to 1 and 5 year(s), respectively. MRI-PDFF significantly decreased from 15.3 ± 7.8% at baseline to 11.9 ± 7.6% (p = 0.001) at 1 year and further decreased to 11.3 ± 5.7% (p = 0.013) at 5 years. Thus, a 5-year observation demonstrated that SGLT2 inhibitors have beneficial effects on liver steatosis in people with T2D and MASLD.

Abstract
The benefits of Pilates have been extensively researched for their impact on muscular, psychological, and cardiac health, as well as body composition, among other aspects. This study aims to investigate the influence of the Pilates method on the learning process, motor control, and neuromuscular trunk stabilization, specifically in both experienced and inexperienced practitioners. This semi-randomized controlled trial compares the level of experience among 36 Pilates practitioners in terms of motor control and learning of two Pilates-based skills: standing plank and side crisscross. Data will be collected using various assessment methods, including abdominal wall muscle ultrasound (AWMUS), shear wave elastography (SWE), gaze behavior (GA) assessment, electroencephalography (EEG), and video motion. Significant intra- and inter-individual variations are expected, due to the diverse morphological and psychomotor profiles in the sample. The adoption of both linear and non-linear analyses will provide a comprehensive evaluation of how neuromuscular structures evolve over time and space, offering both quantitative and qualitative insights. Non-linear analysis is expected to reveal higher entropy in the expert group compared to non-experts, signifying greater complexity in their motor control. In terms of stability, experts are likely to exhibit higher Lyapunov exponent values, indicating enhanced stability and coordination, along with lower Hurst exponent values. In elastography, experienced practitioners are expected to display higher transversus abdominis (TrA) muscle elasticity, due to their proficiency. Concerning GA, non-experts are expected to demonstrate more saccades, focus on more Areas of Interest (AOIs), and shorter fixation times, as experts are presumed to have more efficient gaze control. In EEG, we anticipate higher theta wave values in the non-expert group compared to the expert group. These expectations draw from similar studies in elastography and correlated research in eye tracking and EEG. They are consistent with the principles of the Pilates Method and other scientific knowledge in related techniques.

Abstract
The primary aim of this investigation was to compare players' anthropometric (AP) and body composition (BC) characteristics between distinct maturity bands (pre-PHV, circa-PHV, post-PHV) in youth elite soccer. This study considered 320 male soccer players (mean age 13.8 y). Participants were from U14 (n = 157) and U15 (n = 163) age categories. The Khamis-Roche method was applied to calculate the percentage of predicted adult height (PAH) at the time of assessment based on which the players were further divided into maturity bands (pre-PHV ≤ 87%, circa-PHV = 88-95%, post-PHV > 95%). The findings indicated that most of the players were in the circa-PHV stage at the time of investigation. Measurements included height and weight. The estimates of BC parameters were derived using bioelectrical impedance (BIA) analysis. These various AP and BC attributes displayed significant differences among the maturity bands (F = 139.344-7.925; p < 0.001; large effect sizes) except in body fat mass (BFM) (F = 2.998; p = 0.051; small effect size). The current somatic maturity stage of the athletes should be considered when evaluating BC results, otherwise there is a risk of misinterpretation.

Abstract
A variety of easy-to-use commercial bioelectrical impedance appliances are available. The aim of this study was to examine the usefulness of a commercially available body composition meter using bioelectrical impedance analysis (BIA) by comparing its measurement results with those obtained from dual-energy X-ray absorptiometry (DXA). The participants were 443 children aged from 10 to 14 years (226 boys and 217 girls). Fat mass, fat-free mass, lean body mass, percentage of body fat, and bone mineral contents were evaluated for all participants using BIA and DXA. The agreement in the anthropometric data obtained from both devices was analyzed using correlation analysis, intraclass correlation coefficient (ICC), Lin's concordance correlation coefficient (CCC), Bland-Altman plots, and ordinary least products regression analysis. Equivalence between both devices was tested by two one-sided t-test. All measured indicators showed strong linear correlations between the two measurement systems (r, 0.853-1.000). Fat mass, fat-free mass, and lean body mass showed absolute concordance (ICC, 0.902-0.972; Lin's CCC, 0.902-0.972). BIA overestimated bone mineral content (62.7-66.5%) and underestimated percentage of body fat (- 8.9 to - 0.8%), lean body mass (- 3.5 to - 1.8%), and body mass (- 0.8 to - 0.5%). For fat mass and fat-free mass, the overestimate or underestimate varied according to the sex and statistical analysis test. Bland-Altman analysis and ordinary least products analysis showed fixed bias and proportional bias in all indicators. Results according to quartiles of body mass index showed poor agreement for fat mass and percentage of body fat in both boys and girls in the lowest body mass index quartile. The present results revealed strong linear correlations between BIA and DXA, which confirmed the validity of the present single-frequency BIA-derived parameters. Our results suggest that BIA cannot provide the exact same values as DXA for some body composition parameters, but that performance is sufficient for longitudinal use within an individual for daily health management and monitoring.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Esports players are often referred to as sedentary athletes, as gaming requires prolonged sedentary screen exposure. As sedentary behavior and physical inactivity are major causes of noncommunicable diseases and premature death, esports players may be at an increased risk for health implications. Prior research has established esports players as having higher levels of body fat and lower levels of lean body mass versus age-matched controls, suggesting the need to assess further health and fitness outcomes of this demographic. However, while research interest is undoubtedly increasing, the majority of studies has focused on subjective self-report data and has lacked relevant objective health and fitness measurements. OBJECTIVE This study aimed to assess the health and fitness status of a group of competitive esports players in relation to an age- and sex-matched comparison group. METHODS In total, 51 competitive esports players (mean 23, SD 3 years, 2 female) and 51 nonesports players (mean 24, SD 3 years, 2 female) were enrolled in this cross-sectional laboratory study. The esports players and the nonesports players completed a questionnaire assessing demographic data and self-reported physical activity levels. Furthermore, physical parameters including BMI, waist-to-height ratio, body fat percentage, systolic blood pressure, diastolic blood pressure, pulse wave velocity, maximal grip strength, and maximal oxygen consumption were assessed. RESULTS There were no significant differences in BMI (t100=1.54; P=.13; d=0.30), waist-to-height ratio (t100=1.44; P=.16; d=0.28), body fat percentage (t100=-0.48; P=.63; d=-0.09), systolic blood pressure (t100=-0.06; P=.93; d=-0.01), diastolic blood pressure (t100=0.37; P=.71; d=0.07), pulse wave velocity (t93=-2.08; P=.15; d=-0.43), maximal grip strength (t100=-.08; P=.94; d=-0.02), maximal oxygen consumption (t100=-0.11; P=.92; d=-0.02), and physical activity (PA) levels (t86=2.17; P=.08; d=0.46) between the groups. CONCLUSIONS While the health narrative directed toward esports players has been mainly negative, this laboratory-based study indicated that esports players are not less healthy or fit compared to their peers. However, it seems that esports players are very heterogeneous and seem to span across the whole range of the fitness and health spectrum. Thus, the generalized statements of the esports athlete as an obese and unhealthy individual may need to be reconsidered.

Abstract
PURPOSE To determine whether muscle mass, defined by fat-free mass index (FFMI) measured with bioelectrical impedance analysis (BIA), is predictive of survival of head and neck squamous cell carcinoma (HNSCC) patients. METHODS HNSCC patients treated between 2014 and 2018 at the Department for Nutrition of the Institute of Oncology Ljubljana were reviewed. The FFMI values from the pretreatment BIA measurements and pretreatment body mass index (BMI) were used to categorize patients into groups with low and normal muscle mass and BMI using the Global Leadership Initiative on malnutrition (GLIM) recommended cutoff values. The impact of FFMI on disease-free survival (DFS) and overall survival (OS) was determined. RESULTS Of the 71 included patients, 31 (43.7%) had normal FFMI, and 40 (56.3%) had low FFMI, whereas 44 (62%) and 27 (38%) of the patients had normal and low BMI, respectively. Between FFMI and BMI values, a significant correlation was found (RP = 0.75, p < 0.001). Univariate regression analysis showed that FFMI (as a continuous variable) was of prognostic significance for OS (p = 0.039), which was confirmed by multivariate regression analysis (p = 0.029). The model where BMI replaced FFMI negated the prognostic value of BMI (as a continuous variable). Neither FFMI nor BMI was found to be a predictor of DFS on univariate or multivariate analysis. CONCLUSIONS In the present group of HNSCC patients, low FFMI adversely influenced OS, emphasizing the importance of using body composition measurement over BMI alone for pretreatment nutritional evaluation of these patients.

Abstract
Introduction There are many anthropometric techniques to screen for overweight-obesity like the body mass index (BMI), waist circumference (WC), and waist-hip ratio (WHR). These may be difficult or less acceptable in community and outpatient settings. We determine the cut-offs of mid-upper arm circumference (MUAC) and neck-circumference (NC) to screen overweight (BMI ≥25 kg/m2), abdominal obesity by waist circumference (WC; men: ≥90 cm; women: ≥80 cm) and high percent body fat (PBF) (men: ≥20%; women: ≥30%) and explore participant preference for various anthropometric methods. Method ology: We enrolled 282 medical students in South India and performed anthropometry (height, weight, WC, MUAC and NC), bio-impedance analysis (BIA, Inbody 770) to detect PBF. Receiver operator curves were generated and best cut-offs derived using highest Youden Index (sensitivity + specificity-1). Results Of the 282 participants, 83 (29.4%) were overweight, 113 (38.7%) had abdominal obesity and 186 (66%) had higher PBF. The MUAC cut-off was 31.3cm for men (sensitivity: 86%; specificity: 74%) to detect overweight and 31.2 cm (sensitivity: 85%; specificity: 73%) to detect abdominal obesity. The corresponding cut-offs in women were 28.5 cm (sensitivity:88%; specificity: 83%) to detect overweight and 28.3 cm (sensitivity: 74%; specificity: 92%) for abdominal obesity. For NC, the proposed cut-off in men was 36.6 cm (sensitivity: 81%; specificity: 82%) for overweight and 37.1 cm (sensitivity:78%; specificity:82%) for abdominal obesity. In women, this was 31.4 cm for both overweight as per BMI (sensitivity: 88%; specificity: 71%) and for abdominal obesity (sensitivity: 75%; specificity: 81%). Neck circumference was preferred by 225 (79.8%) participants. Conclusion Both MUAC and NC can be considered for screening overweight and abdominal obesity with good sensitivity and specificity but their sensitivity and specificity for screening high PFB were not very good. Neck circumference was the most preferred anthropometric method.

Abstract
Bioimpedance (BIA) is the most frequently used technology for body composition assessment at a daily clinical level, mostly due to its low price and user-friendly operation. However, many doubts persist regarding its physiological meaning and applicability. The present study aimed to compare one BIA system and the Dual-Energy X-ray Absorptiometry (DXA) for the characterization of body composition in a previously selected cohort of healthy adult participants. A descriptive observational cross-sectional study included a final sample of 121 participants, 93 women and 28 men, with a mean age of 28.26 ± 9.72 years old and a mean body mass index (BMI) of 22.68 ± 3.13 kg/m2. Statistics involved paired t-tests and agreement analysis by the Bland-Altman method. BIA underestimated the percent body fat (%BF) by 5.56% and overestimated Fat-Free Mass (FFM) by 2.90 kg. A strong positive correlation between both technologies was found for FFM (r = 0.980) and the %BF (r = 0.932), but the disagreement was statistically significant (p < 0.001). Although DXA and BIA seem to correlate, these technologies are not congruent. Therefore, the risk of (mis)interpretation and bias is clear with BIA, potentially impacting the nutritional planning of clinical dietitians and the further results of its patients.

Abstract
Body composition is a key component of health in both individuals and populations, and excess adiposity is associated with an increased risk of developing chronic diseases. Body mass index (BMI) and other clinical or commercially available tools for quantifying body fat (BF) such as DXA, MRI, CT, and photonic scanners (3DPS) are often inaccurate, cost prohibitive, or cumbersome to use. The aim of the current study was to evaluate the performance of a novel automated computer vision method, visual body composition (VBC), that uses two-dimensional photographs captured via a conventional smartphone camera to estimate percentage total body fat (%BF). The VBC algorithm is based on a state-of-the-art convolutional neural network (CNN). The hypothesis is that VBC yields better accuracy than other consumer-grade fat measurements devices. 134 healthy adults ranging in age (21–76 years), sex (61.2% women), race (60.4% White; 23.9% Black), and body mass index (BMI, 18.5–51.6 kg/m2) were evaluated at two clinical sites (N = 64 at MGH, N = 70 at PBRC). Each participant had %BF measured with VBC, three consumer and two professional bioimpedance analysis (BIA) systems. The PBRC participants also had air displacement plethysmography (ADP) measured. %BF measured by dual-energy x-ray absorptiometry (DXA) was set as the reference against which all other %BF measurements were compared. To test our scientific hypothesis we run multiple, pair-wise Wilcoxon signed rank tests where we compare each competing measurement tool (VBC, BIA, …) with respect to the same ground-truth (DXA). Relative to DXA, VBC had the lowest mean absolute error and standard deviation (2.16 ± 1.54%) compared to all of the other evaluated methods (p < 0.05 for all comparisons). %BF measured by VBC also had good concordance with DXA (Lin’s concordance correlation coefficient, CCC: all 0.96; women 0.93; men 0.94), whereas BMI had very poor concordance (CCC: all 0.45; women 0.40; men 0.74). Bland-Altman analysis of VBC revealed the tightest limits of agreement (LOA) and absence of significant bias relative to DXA (bias −0.42%, R2 = 0.03; p = 0.062; LOA −5.5% to +4.7%), whereas all other evaluated methods had significant (p < 0.01) bias and wider limits of agreement. Bias in Bland-Altman analyses is defined as the discordance between the y = 0 axis and the regressed line computed from the data in the plot. In this first validation study of a novel, accessible, and easy-to-use system, VBC body fat estimates were accurate and without significant bias compared to DXA as the reference; VBC performance exceeded those of all other BIA and ADP methods evaluated. The wide availability of smartphones suggests that the VBC method for evaluating %BF could play an important role in quantifying adiposity levels in a wide range of settings. Abstract
The insufficient activity of insulin and the hyperactivity of glucagon are responsible for glucose intolerance in patients with type 2 diabetes. Whereas sodium-glucose cotransporter-2 (SGLT2) inhibitors improve blood glucose levels in patients with type 2 diabetes, their effects on the secretion profiles of glucagon and incretins remain unclear. Therefore, to investigate the effects of the SGLT2 inhibitor luseogliflozin on metabolic and endocrine profiles, 19 outpatients with type 2 diabetes were administered luseogliflozin for 12 weeks. It is of note that all subjects were treated only with diet and exercise therapy, and we were able to investigate the effects of luseogliflozin separately from the effects of other antidiabetic agents. Body weight, body fat mass, fat-free mass, and muscle mass were significantly reduced after 12 weeks of luseogliflozin administration. Glycosylated hemoglobin significantly decreased from the baseline of 8.2% ± 0.8% to 7.3% ± 0.7% (p < 0.0001). The meal tolerance test demonstrated that luseogliflozin significantly recovered glucose tolerance, accompanied by improved insulin resistance and β-cell function, whereas glucagon secretion was unaffected. Furthermore, GLP-1 secretion was significantly increased after luseogliflozin administration. Thus, luseogliflozin improved metabolic and endocrine profiles accompanied by increased GLP-1 secretion in type 2 diabetic patients without any antidiabetic medication, but did not affect glucagon secretion.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Changes in body composition, especially loss of lean mass, commonly occur in the orthopedic trauma population due to physical inactivity and inadequate nutrition. The purpose of this study was to assess inter-rater and intra-rater reliability of a portable bioelectrical impedance analysis (BIA) device to measure body composition in an orthopedic trauma population after operative fracture fixation. BIA uses a weak electric current to measure impedance (resistance) in the body and uses this to calculate the components of body composition using extensively studied formulas. METHODS Twenty subjects were enrolled, up to 72 hours after operative fixation of musculoskeletal injuries and underwent body composition measurements by two independent raters. One measurement was obtained by each rater at the time of enrollment and again between 1-4 hours after the initial measurement. Reliability was assessed using intraclass correlation coefficients (ICC) and minimum detectable change (MDC) values were calculated from these results. RESULTS Inter-rater reliability was excellent with ICC values for body fat mass (BFM), lean body mass (LBM), skeletal muscle mass (SMM), dry lean mass (DLM), and percent body fat (PBF) of 0.993, 0.984, 0.984, 0.979, and 0.986 respectively. Intra-rater reliability was also high for BFM, LBM, SMM, DLM, and PBF, at 0.994, 0.989, 0.990, 0.983, 0.987 (rater 1) and 0.994, 0.988, 0.989, 0.985, 0.989 (rater 2). MDC values were calculated to be 4.05 kg for BFM, 4.10 kg for LBM, 2.45 kg for SMM, 1.21 kg for DLM, and 4.83% for PBF. CONCLUSION Portable BIA devices are a versatile and attractive option that can reliably be used to assess body composition and changes in lean body mass in the orthopedic trauma population for both research and clinical endeavors. Abstract
BACKGROUND The accurate assessment of total body and regional body circumferences, volumes, and compositions are critical to monitor physical activity and dietary interventions, as well as accurate disease classifications including obesity, metabolic syndrome, sarcopenia, and lymphedema. We assessed body composition and anthropometry estimates provided by a commercial 3-dimensional optical (3DO) imaging system compared to criterion measures. METHODS Participants of the Shape Up! Adults study were recruited for similar sized stratifications by sex, age (18-40, 40-60, >60 years), BMI (under, normal, overweight, obese), and across five ethnicities (non-Hispanic [NH] Black, NH White, Hispanic, Asian, Native Hawaiian/Pacific Islander). All participants received manual anthropometry assessments, duplicate whole-body 3DO (Styku S100), and dual-energy X-ray absorptiometry (DXA) scans. 3DO estimates provided by the manufacturer for anthropometry and body composition were compared to the criterion measures using concordance correlation coefficient (CCC) and Bland-Altman analysis. Test-retest precision was assessed by root mean square error (RMSE) and coefficient of variation. RESULTS A total of 188 (102 female) participants were included. The overall fat free mass (FFM) as measured by DXA (54.1 ± 15.2 kg) and 3DO (55.3 ± 15.0 kg) showed a small mean difference of 1.2 ± 3.4 kg (95% limits of agreement -7.0 to +5.6) and the CCC was 0.97 (95% CI: 0.96-0.98). The CCC for FM was 0.95 (95% CI: 0.94-0.97) and the mean difference of 1.3 ± 3.4 kg (95% CI: -5.5 to +8.1) reflected the difference in FFM measures. 3DO anthropometry and body composition measurements showed high test-retest precision for whole body volume (1.1 L), fat mass (0.41 kg), percent fat (0.60%), arm and leg volumes, (0.11 and 0.21 L, respectively), and waist and hip circumferences (all <0.60 cm). No group differences were observed when stratified by body mass index, sex, or race/ethnicity. CONCLUSIONS The anthropometric and body composition estimates provided by the 3DO scanner are precise and accurate to criterion methods if offsets are considered. This method offers a rapid, broadly available, and automated method of body composition assessment regardless of body size. Further studies are recommended to examine the relationship between measurements obtained by 3DO scans and metabolic health in healthy and clinical populations.

Abstract
Background Sarcopenia is highly prevalent in geriatric rehabilitation patients and can worsen prognosis. This study aimed to investigate the association of sarcopenia and components of sarcopenia with 3-month and 1-year post-discharge mortality in geriatric rehabilitation inpatients. Methods REStORing health of acutely unwell adulTs (RESORT) is an observational, prospective longitudinal cohort of geriatric rehabilitation inpatients. Sex-stratified Cox proportional-hazards analyses were used to associate sarcopenia (and its components) at admission, by the European Working Group on Sarcopenia in Older People (EWGSOP, EWGSOP2) and the Asian Working Group for Sarcopenia 2019 (AWGS 2019), with 3-month and 1-year post-discharge all-cause mortality. Results Patients (n = 1,406) had a median interquartile ranges [IQR] age of 83.0 [77.4–88.2] years (58% females). Sarcopenia was significantly associated with 3-month and 1-year mortality in females (EWGSOP, EWGSOP2 and AWGS 2019) and males (EWGSOP2, AWGS 2019). In females, low muscle mass (EWGSOP, EWGSOP2 and AWGS 2019) was significantly associated with 3-month and 1-year mortality; low muscle strength (EWGSOP, EWGSOP2 and AWGS 2019) was significantly associated with 1-year mortality. For males, low muscle mass (EWGSOP2, AWGS 2019) was significantly associated with 3-month and 1-year mortality; low muscle strength (EWGSOP2, AWGS 2019) was significantly associated with 3-month mortality. The association between physical performance with mortality was not analysed due to less than five events (death) in patients with normal physical performance. Conclusions Sarcopenia, low muscle mass and low muscle strength at admission are associated with a significantly higher risk of mortality post-discharge from geriatric rehabilitation, highlighting the need to measure muscle mass and strength in clinical practice.

Abstract
BACKGROUND At present, available research on the relationship between muscle distribution and respiratory function in healthy people is limited. OBJECTIVE To study the relationship between muscle distribution and lung function in healthy young adults. METHODS A total of 612 male and 1561 Female Chinese college students were recruited. visceral fat tissue (VAT), subcutaneous fat tissue (SAT), total body muscle mass (TMM), trunk muscle mass (TKMM), upper limb muscle mass (ULMM) and lower limb muscle mass (LLMM) was measured by body composition. Vital capacity (VC) was measured by spirometry instrument. Obesity classification was defined by muscle mass ratio (MMR), body mass index (BMI), body fat percentage (BFP), waist-to-hip ratio (WHR). RESULTS Among these positive correlation parameters, male VC had a high positive correlation with TMM and LLMM, while female VC had a high positive correlation with TMM and TKMM. After the population was divided into MMR, BMI, BFP, and WHR, further analysis showed that VC was positively correlated with TMM for males with MMR-low muscle (r = 0.483; p < 0.05), BMI-underweight (r = 0.265; p < 0.05), BMI-overweight + obesity (r = 0.272; p < 0.05), BFP-low fat (r = 0.306; p < 0.05), and WHR-normal subgroups (r = 0.316; p < 0.05), while LLMM was positively correlated with VC in the MMR-normal muscle (r = 0.285; p < 0.05), BMI-normal (r = 0.305; p < 0.05), BFP-normal fat (r = 0.304; p < 0.05), and WHR obesity subgroups (r = 0.266; p < 0.05). VC was positively correlated with TMM for females with MMR-low muscle (r = 0.169; p < 0.05), MMR-normal muscle (r = 0.241; p < 0.05), BMI-underweight (r = 0.241; p < 0.05), BMI-normal (r = 0.288; p < 0.05), WHR normal (r = 0.275; p < 0.05), and BFP-low fat subgroups (r = 0.255; p < 0.05), while TKMM was positively correlated with VC in the BMI-overweight + obesity (r = 0.342; p < 0.05), WHR-obesity (r = 0.227; p < 0.05), and BFP-normal subgroups (r = 0.256; p < 0.05). CONCLUSIONS Muscle distribution in young adults is highly correlated with VC, and this relationship is affected by gender and body types. In general, for thin, VC is more positively correlated with TMM, and for normal weight or obese, VC is more positively correlated with LLMM for males but with TKMM for females, respectively, in comparison with other tested indices. Further studies will be required to evaluate the relationship between muscle distribution and vital capacity in young adults.

Abstract
(1) Bio-electrical impedance analysis (BIA) is a rapid, simple, and noninvasive tool for evaluating the metabolic status and for assessing volume status in critically ill patients. Little is known, however, the prognostic value of body composition analysis in septic shock patients. This study assessed the association between parameters by body composition analysis and mortality in patients with septic shock in the emergency department (ED). (2) Data were prospectively collected on adult patients with septic shock who underwent protocol-driven resuscitation bundle therapy between December 2019 and January 2021. The primary outcome was 30-day mortality. (3) The study included 261 patients, the average ratio of extracellular water (ECW) to total body water (TBW) was significantly higher in non-survivors than in survivors (0.414 vs. 0.401, p < 0.001). Multivariate analysis showed that ECW/TBW ≥ 0.41 (odds ratio (OR), 4.62; 95% confidence interval (CI), 2.31–9.26, p < 0.001), altered mental status (OR, 2.88; 95% CI, 1.28–6.46, p = 0.010), and lactate level (OR, 1.24; 95% CI, 1.12–1.37, p < 0.001) were significantly associated with 30-day mortality in patients with septic shock. (4) ECW/TBW ≥ 0.41 may be associated with 30-day mortality in patients with septic shock receiving protocol-driven resuscitation bundle therapy in the ED.

Abstract
Numerous studies have shown that growth hormone (GH) replacement in adult GH deficiency (AGHD) improves the body composition and metabolic rate; however, data about the relationship between body composition and energy expenditure in these patients is scarce. Our study aimed to investigate the changes in resting energy expenditure (REE) and body composition after GH replacement in patients with AGHD. We enrolled 15 patients diagnosed with AGHD and evaluated the effect of GH replacement administered once daily for 12 months on REE, body composition measured by bioelectrical impedance analysis, and serological markers. GH replacement therapy significantly increased the serum insulin growth factor-1 levels after 4, 8, and 12 months. The REE and REE/basal energy expenditure (REE/BEE) ratio significantly increased from 1278.0 ± 490.0 kcal/day and 0.87 ± 0.23 at baseline to 1505.5 ± 449.2 kcal/day and 1.11 ± 0.21 at 4 months, 1,918.7 ± 631.2 kcal/day and 1.29 ± 0.27 at 8 months, and 1,511.1 ± 271.2 kcal/day, 1.14 ± 0.29 at 12 months (p < 0.005, p < 0.005; p < 0.01, p < 0.01; p < 0.01, p < 0.005, respectively). There was no change in the body weight, while the lean body mass increased significantly from 45.8 ± 9.5 kg at baseline to 46.9 ± 9.4 kg at 4 months and 47.5 ± 10.1 kg at 8 months (p < 0.005, p < 0.01, respectively). The fat mass also decreased at 12 months. Lipid metabolism improved after 4 and 8 months. GH replacement therapy in patients with AGHD significantly improved the REE and body composition.

Abstract
INTRODUCTION/BACKGROUND Few investigations have sought to explain discrepancies between dual-energy X-ray absorptiometry (DXA) and bioelectrical impedance analysis (BIA) body composition estimates. The purpose of this analysis was to explore physiological and anthropometric predictors of discrepancies between DXA and BIA total and segmental body composition estimates. METHODOLOGY Assessments via DXA (GE Lunar Prodigy) and single-frequency BIA (RJL Systems Quantum V) were performed in 179 adults (103 F, 76 M, age: 33.6 ± 15.3 yr; BMI: 24.9 ± 4.3 kg/m2). Potential predictor variables for differences between DXA and BIA total and segmental fat mass (FM) and lean soft tissue (LST) estimates were obtained from demographics and laboratory techniques, including DXA, BIA, bioimpedance spectroscopy, air displacement plethysmography, and 3-dimensional optical scanning. To determine meaningful predictors, Bayesian robust regression models were fit using a t-distribution and regularized hierarchical shrinkage "horseshoe" prior. Standardized model coefficients (β) were generated, and leave-one-out cross validation was used to assess model predictive performance. RESULTS LST hydration (i.e., total body water:LST) was a predictor of discrepancies in all FM and LST variables (|β|: 0.20-0.82). Additionally, extracellular fluid percentage was a predictor for nearly all outcomes (|β|: 0.19-0.40). Height influenced the agreement between whole-body estimates (|β|: 0.74-0.77), while the mass, length, and composition of body segments were predictors for segmental LST estimates (|β|: 0.23-3.04). Predictors of segmental FM errors were less consistent. Select sex-, race-, or age-based differences between methods were observed. The accuracy of whole-body models was superior to segmental models (leave-one-out cross-validation-adjusted R2 of 0.83-0.85 for FMTOTAL and LSTTOTAL vs. 0.20-0.76 for segmental estimates). For segmental models, predictive performance decreased in the order of: appendicular lean soft tissue, LSTLEGS, LSTTRUNK and FMLEGS, FMARMS, FMTRUNK, and LSTARMS. CONCLUSIONS These findings indicate the importance of LST hydration, extracellular fluid content, and height for explaining discrepancies between DXA and BIA body composition estimates. These general findings and quantitative interpretation based on the presented data allow for a better understanding of sources of error between 2 popular segmental body composition techniques and facilitate interpretation of estimates from these technologies.

Abstract
The aim of this study was at examining the validity and reliability of a marketed bioimpedance (BIA) scale for body composition assessment, in children engaged in an educational football project (FIFA 11 for Health). One-hundred and twenty-seven children (70 boys and 57 girls; age 10.7±0.5 years, body mass 41.2±9.0 kg, Body mass index 18.5±3.3 kg·m-2 and stature 149±7 cm) were evaluated for total body mass, lean body mass, muscle mass, using BIA (InBody 270, Biospace, California, USA) and dual-energy X-ray absorptiometry (DEXA, Lunar Prodigy, GE Medical Systems, Madison, Wisconsin, USA), at baseline conditions. Data analyses were carried out separately for girls and boys. Nearly perfect associations (r = 0.97−0.99) and excellent absolute (TEM = 0.04−1.9%) and relative (ICC = 0.98−1.00) inter-device reliability were found between DEXA and BIA variables. Fat and lean body mass bias (p < .0001) were practically relevant both for the boys (2.56 and 11.22 kg, respectively) and the girls (2.33 and 10.49 kg, respectively). Muscle mass and body fat were underestimated and overestimated, respectively, for the boys and girls. InBody 270 is a valid BIA system for estimating body composition with an excellent inter-device relative and absolute reliability. However, the remarkable measurements bias of BIA fat and muscle mass values discourage its use for clinical prescription. The BIA body composition biases were sex dependent.

Abstract
Objective It is unclear to what degree acutely violating bioelectrical impedance analysis (BIA) measurement assumptions will alter the predicted percent fat mass (%FM) and whether this differs by sex or body mass index (BMI). Methods %FM was assessed under control, dehydration, exercise, water, food intake and non-voided bladder conditions with three BIA devices (Tanita: BC-418, TBF-314, & Omron HBF-306CN) for men (n = 23, age: 24.0 ± 5.2 years old) and women (n = 17, age: 22.5 ± 3.4 years old) separately. Results For all BIA devices, there were no differences in the %FM values between the control and the other conditions in men or women (− 1.9 to 0.4%, p > 0.05). Across the three devices and five conditions, 97% of %FM tests returned values within 5% of control (2 tests), and 86% of tests were within 2% of control despite violating an assumption. The errors were greatest with dehydration and women were more likely to have a %FM difference greater than 2% than men with dehydration using the hand-to-foot device (Tanita TBF-314: 59% versus 9%). There were no differences in %FM between control and the conditions when examined by BMI (overweight/obesity: − 2.8 to 0.1% and normal weight: − 1.7 to 0.5%; BMI*trial, p = 0.99). Conclusion %FM estimates were similar despite acutely violating the preliminary measurement BIA assumptions across a range of different BMIs. The minor variations in %FM are smaller than what would be expected with day-to-day variability or weight loss intervention but may be larger in women than men.

J Strength Cond Res 35(2): 373-384, 2021-The purposes were to compare body composition measures between a specific multifrequency bioelectrical impedance analyzer (InBody770) and dual-energy x-ray absorptiometry (DXA) and determine if hydration status within a specified range affected these measures. Methods included determining urine specific gravity before testing. Urine specific gravity needed to be within typical well-hydrated (n = 37), euhydrated (n = 45), or slightly dehydrated (n = 20) ranges. Segmental and total body composition measures were determined with the InBody770 and by DXA within the same testing session. Paired sample t-tests revealed significant differences (p < 0.005) between InBody770 and DXA for all body composition variables for all 3 hydration statuses, except for trunk fat-free mass (FFM) and trunk fat mass (FM) of the well-hydrated and euhydrated groups and right leg FM and trunk FFM of the slightly dehydrated group. For the total sample (n = 102), InBody770 significantly underestimated total body FM, right arm FFM, left arm FFM, right leg FFM, and left leg FFM with the range of underestimation being between 0.16 and 2.87 kg. The total body FFM by InBody770 was overestimated by 2.33 ± 2.80 kg or 3.6%. Bland-Altman plots supported these results. The major conclusions are that differences between the InBody770 and DXA segmental and total body FFM and FM are not significantly affected by hydration status in the range investigated, and the FM and FFM determined by the 2 devices are generally significantly different.

Abstract
BACKGROUND InBody-770 and SECA mBCA 515 are multifrequency bioelectrical impedance analysis (BIA) devices, which are commonly used in the clinic to assess fat-free mass (FFM) and body fat (BF). However, the accuracy between devices in clinical settings, across different body mass index (BMI) groups remains unclear. METHODS Body composition for 226 participants (51% men, aged 18-80 years, BMI 18-56 kg/m²) was assessed by two commercial multifrequency BIA devices requiring standing position and using eight-contact electrodes, InBody 770 and SECA mBCA 515, and compared to results from dual-energy X-ray absorptiometry (DXA). Measurements were performed in a random order, after a 3 h fast and no prior exercise. Lin's-concordance correlation and Bland-Altman analyses were used to compare between devices, and linear regression to assess accuracy in BF% across BMI groups. RESULTS We found strong correlation between DXA results for study population BF% and those obtained by InBody (ρc = 0.922, 95% confidence interval (CI) 0.902, 0.938) and DXA and SECA (ρc = 0.940, CI 0.923, 0.935), with 95% limits of agreements between 2.6 and -8.9, and 7.1 and -7.6, respectively. BF% assessment by SECA was similar to DXA (-0.3%, p = 0.267), and underestimated by InBody (-3.1%, p < 0.0001). InBody deviations were largest among normal weight people and decreased with increasing BMI group, while SECA measurements remained unaffected. CONCLUSIONS Both BIA devices agreed well with BF% assessment obtained by DXA. Unlike SECA, InBody underestimated BF% in both genders and was influenced by BMI categories. Therefore, in clinical settings, individual assessment of BF% should be taken with caution.

Abstract
Muscle quality is well-known to decrease with aging and is a risk factor for metabolic abnormalities. However, there is a lack of information on race-associated differences in muscle quality and other neuromuscular features related to functional performance. This study aimed to compare muscle quality, function, and morphological characteristics in Japanese and Brazilian older individuals. Eighty-four participants aged 65–87 years were enrolled in the study (42 Japanese: 23 men, 19 women, mean age 70.4 years; 42 Brazilians: 23 men, 19 women, mean age 70.8 years). Echo intensity (EI) and muscle thickness (MT) of the quadriceps femoris were measured using B-mode ultrasonography. A stepwise multiple linear regression analysis with EI as a dependent variable revealed that MT was a significant variable for Japanese participants (R2 = 0.424, P = 0.001), while MT and subcutaneous adipose tissue (SCAT) thickness were significant variables for Brazilian participants (R2 = 0.490, P = 0.001). A second stepwise multiple linear regression analysis was performed after excluding MT and SCAT thickness from the independent variables. Sex and age for Japanese participants (R2 = 0.381, P = 0.001) and lean body mass and body mass index for Brazilian participants (R2 = 0.385, P = 0.001) were identified as significant independent variables. The present results suggest that MT is closely correlated with muscle quality in Japanese and Brazilian older individuals. Increases in muscle size may induce decreases in intramuscular adipose tissue and/or connective tissues, which are beneficial for reducing the risks of metabolic impairments in Japanese and Brazilian older individuals.

Abstract
BACKGROUND There is a dearth of longitudinal data on body composition, function, and physical performance in persons with Alzheimer's disease (AD). OBJECTIVES The aim was to describe the trajectories of function, body composition, and physical performance in older adults with AD. METHODS In this retrospective cohort study, data were collected from older adults (n=1402) diagnosed with AD (mean age: 78.1 y old, women: 69.3%). Cognitive function was assessed using the mini-mental state examination. Proxy-reported instrumental and basic activities of daily living were assessed using the Lawton and Barthel indexes. Body composition was assessed using bioelectrical impedance analysis. Physical performance was assessed using the timed up and go test and grip strength. RESULTS Median (interquartile range) of follow-up time was 2.2 (1.2 to 3.6) years. Participants' mini-mental state examination score, Barthel index, and Lawton index declined over time. Skeletal muscle mass index and physical performance (timed up and go test and grip strength) decreased, while fat mass index increased with time. No significant changes or slight decline in weight and body mass index was observed. CONCLUSIONS Muscle mass and physical performance are likely to decline in older adults with AD. Clinicians should assess muscle mass and physical performance trajectories regularly in these patients and intervene appropriately.

Abstract
Changes in body composition are related to mobility, fall risk, and mortality, especially in older adults. Various devices and methods exist to measure body composition, but bioelectrical impedance analysis (BIA) has several advantages. The purpose of this study was to validate a common BIA device with a dual-energy X-ray absorptiometer (DXA) in older adults and develop prediction equations to improve the accuracy of the BIA measurements. The participants were 277 older adults (162 women and 115 men; age 73.9 ± 5.8 years) without a history of cancer and without a history of severe medical or mental conditions. Individuals fasted 12 hr before BIA and DXA measurement. The correlations between the two methods for appendicular lean mass (ALM), fat-free mass (FFM), and percentage body fat (%BF) were .86, .93, and .92, respectively, adjusting for age and sex. The mean percentage error (DXA-InBody) and mean absolute percentage error were -12% and 13% for ALM, -13% and 13% for FFM, and 16% and 17% for %BF. The prediction equations estimated ALM, FFM, and %BF; sex was coded as 1 for male and 0 for female: DXAALM=0.0673+(0.6732×BIAALM)+(2.33507×sex)+(0.13349×BMI),R2=.94; DXAFFM=0.72323+(0.72384×BIAFFM)+(3.675012×sex)+(0.2816×BMI),R2=.97; and DXA%BF=15.8896+(0.64694×BIA%BF) -(3.99945×sex)+(0.13824×BMI),R2=.91 Although highly correlated, BIA overestimated FFM, and ALM and underestimated %BF compared with DXA. An application of prediction equations eliminated the mean error and reduced the range of individual error across the sample. Prediction equations may improve BIA accuracy sufficiently to substitute for DXA in some cases.

Abstract
BACKGROUND The present study compared the effects of training and detraining periods of high-intensity interval training (HIIT), moderate-intensity interval training (MIIT) and moderate-intensity continuous training (MICT) on functional performance, body composition, resting blood pressure and heart rate in elderly women nursing home residents. METHODS Forty-six volunteers (age, 80.8 ± 5.2 y; body mass, 69.8 ± 5.2 kg, height, 164.2 ± 4.12 cm) were divided into groups that performed treadmill exercise twice-weekly HIIT (4 bouts of 4-min intervals at 85-95% of the maximal heart rate [HRmax], interspersed by 4 min at 65% HRmax), MIIT (4 bouts of 4 min intervals at 55-75% HRmax, interspersed by 4 min at 45-50% HRmax) and MICT (30-min at 55-75% HRmax). Tests were performed before and after 8 weeks of training and 2 and 4 weeks of detraining. ANCOVA was used to analyze dependent variable changes. RESULTS After 8 weeks HIIT promoted greater reductions in body mass (HIIT = - 1.6 ± 0.1 kg; MICT = - 0.9 ± 0.1 kg; MIIT = - 0.9 ± 0.1 kg; p = 0.001), fat mass (HIIT = - 2.2 ± 0.1%; MICT = - 0.7 ± 0.1%; MIIT = - 1.2 ± 0.1%; p < 0.001) and resting heart rate (HIIT = - 7.3 ± 0.3%; MICT = - 3.6 ± 0.3%; MIIT = - 5.1 ± 0.3%; p < 0.001) and greater improvement in the chair stand test (HIIT = 3.4 ± 0.1 reps; MICT = 2.5 ± 0.1 reps; MIIT = 3.1 ± 0.1 reps; p < 0.001) when compared to MIIT and MICT. These improvements were sustained after 2 and 4 weeks of detraining only in the HIIT group. CONCLUSION HIIT promoted greater benefits for body composition and functional performance than MICT and MIIT and also showed less pronounced effects of detraining. This suggests that the intensity of physical exercise is an important factor to consider when prescribing exercise to the elderly.

Abstract
Objective In the medical treatment of Graves' disease, we sometimes encounter patients who gain weight after the onset of the disease. To estimate the energy required during the course of treatment when hyperthyroidism ameliorates, we measured the resting energy expenditure (REE) and body composition in patients with Graves' disease before and during treatment in the short-term. Methods Twenty patients with newly diagnosed Graves' disease were enrolled, and our REE data of 19 healthy volunteers were used. The REE was measured by a metabolic analyzer, and the basal energy expenditure (BEE) was estimated by the Harris-Benedict formula. The body composition, including body weight, fat mass (FM), muscle mass (MM) and lean body mass (LBM), were measured by a multi-frequency body composition analyzer. We tailored the nutritional guidance based on the measured REE. Results Serum thyrotropin levels were significantly increased at three and six months. Serum free thyroxine, free triiodothyronine and REE values were significantly decreased at one, three and six months. The REE/BEE ratio was 1.58±0.28 at the onset and significantly declined to 1.34±0.34, 1.06±0.19 and 1.01±0.16 at 1, 3 and 6 months, respectively. Body weight, MM and LBM significantly increased at three and six months. Conclusion The REE significantly decreased during treatment of Graves' disease. The decline was evident as early as one month after treatment. The REE after treatment was lower than in healthy volunteers, which may lead to weight gain. These data suggest that appropriate nutritional guidance is necessary with short-term treatment before the body weight normalizes in order to prevent an overweight condition and the emergence of metabolic disorders.

Abstract
This study examined the agreement between 2 segmental bioimpedance analysis (BIA) devices, air displacement plethysmography (BOD POD), and dual energy X-ray absorptiometry (DXA) for estimating body composition in obese adults. Fifty obese adults (25 men and 25 women; age = 34.20 ± 11.19 years; BMI = 36.14 ± 5.33 kg/m2) had their body fat percentage (BF%) and fat-free mass (FFM) evaluated with 2 segmental BIA devices (InBody 230 and InBody 720), BOD POD, and DXA (Lunar iDXA). Body composition via the BOD POD was determined using the Siri equation whereas manufacturer-based equations generated metrics (ie, BF% and FFM) for the InBody devices. The effect size of the mean differences for all BF% and FFM comparisons were trivial (Cohen's d < 0.20). The standard error of estimate (SEE), total error (TE), and 95% limits of agreement (LOAs) were low for both segmental BIA devices when compared to DXA (SEE < 2.26% and 2.35 kg; TE < 2.58% and 2.66 kg; 95% LOAs < ± 4.94% and 4.86kg). The error for BOD POD was also low when compared to DXA (SEE = 2.39% and 2.57 kg; TE = 2.34% and 2.56 kg; 95% LOAs = 4.63% and 5.06 kg). Validity statistics were slightly higher, but considered acceptable, when comparing the segmental BIA devices against BOD POD (SEE < 3.37% and 3.63 kg; TE < 3.44% and 3.79 kg; 95% LOAs < ± 6.62% and 7.19 kg). Lastly, the 2 segmental BIA devices produced nearly identical validity statistics when compared to each other. However, both BIA devices revealed proportional bias for BF% and FFM when compared to the BOD POD and DXA (all p < 0.05). The current study's findings indicate the InBody 230 is interchangeable with the InBody 720 in obese adults. Also, the trivial effect size, when compared against the BOD POD and DXA, suggest the InBody devices could be used for estimating group BF% and FFM. In contrast, the significant proportional bias demonstrates the BIA devices are not acceptable for individual estimates of body composition in an obese clinical population.

ABSTRACT Introduction Accurate and sensitive measurement of body composition is an important tool in the diagnosis and control of obesity. Objective To compare body fat changes measured by dual-energy X-ray absorptiometry (DXA), bioelectrical impedance analysis (BIA), and skinfolds (SK) in healthy overweight adults in order to evaluate whether all three methods can be used during a weight loss program (WLP). Methods Eighty-four men (n=36) and women (n=48), body mass index 25–29.9 kg/m2, aged between 18-50 years, non-smokers and sedentary, were randomly assigned to strength, endurance, combined strength plus endurance, or physical activity recommendations groups. All subjects followed a hypocaloric diet (25-30% decrease in energy intake in terms of the total daily energy expenditure). The intervention lasted 22 weeks. Results The highest correlation was obtained between DXA and SK when men and women were studied together (r=0.864, p<0.01). In women, significant differences were found between DXA and BIA in fat percentage (underestimation of BIA 2.4%, p<0.05). The underestimation was more determinant for both fat percentage and fat mass in men, 13.2% versus 10.2%, and 6.8 kg versus 4.2 kg between BIA and SK respectively (p<0.05). All the procedures obtained similar results (p>0.05) when changes in body fat caused by intervention were analyzed. However, considering results of the minimal difference compared to DXA, BIA showed the greatest sensitivity to detect changes in fat percentage and fat mass, while SK underestimated the changes, with a significantly lower percentage considered real (p=0.01). Conclusion The SK method seems to underestimate real changes, therefore DXA and BIA can serve as more effective tools to measure the change in fat percentage and fat mass during WLP. Abstract
BACKGROUND To elucidate longitudinal changes of complex body composition phenotypes and their association with incident type 2 diabetes mellitus. METHODS A total of 17,280 (mean age, 48.1±8.2 years) Korean adults who underwent medical check-ups were included. The mean follow-up duration was 5.5±0.5 years. Body compositions were assessed using a bioelectrical impedance analysis. Four body composition phenotypes were defined using the median of appendicular skeletal muscle mass (ASM) index and fat mass index: low muscle/low fat (LM/LF); high muscle (HM)/LF; LM/high fat (HF); and HM/HF groups. RESULTS Of the individuals in the LM/LF or HM/HF groups, over 60% remained in the same group, and over 30% were moved to the LM/HF group. Most of the LM/HF group remained in this group. In the baseline HM/LF group, approximately 30% stayed in the group, and the remaining individuals transitioned to the three other groups in similar proportions. Incident diabetes was significantly lower in participants who remained in the HM/LF group than those who transitioned to the LM/LF or LM/HF group from the baseline HM/LF group in men. ASM index was significantly associated with a decreased risk for incident diabetes in men regardless of obesity status (adjusted odds ratio [OR], 0.71 per kg/m²; 95% confidence interval [CI], 0.52 to 0.97 in non-obese) (adjusted OR, 0.87; 95% CI, 0.77 to 0.98 in obese) after adjusting for other strong risk factors (e.g., baseline glycosylated hemoglobin and homeostasis model assessment of insulin resistance). CONCLUSION Maintenance of ASM may be protective against the development of type 2 diabetes mellitus in men, regardless of obesity status.

Abstract
The association between objective measures of body composition (BC) with type 2 diabetes (T2DM) is inconclusive. We conducted a systematic review and meta-analysis to examine the association between several body composition (BC) indices assessed using dual energy X-ray absorptiometry (DXA), and T2DM. Using PRISMA guidelines, we searched for observational studies investigating BC measures, including total body fat mass (BFM), visceral fat mass (VFM), subcutaneous fat mass (SFM), and fat free mass (FFM); and T2DM. Of 670 titles initially identified, 20 were included. High VFM was consistently associated with T2DM. For every kg increase in VFM, the odds of having T2DM increased by two-fold for males (OR 2.28 [95% CI 1.42 to 3.65], p = 0.001) and more than 4-fold for females (OR 4.24 [1.64 to 11.02], p = 0.003). The presence of T2DM was associated with 2-fold higher odds of low FFM (OR 2.38 [1.44 to 3.95]). We found evidence that greater VFM is a risk factor for prevalent and incident T2DM. While the presence of T2DM is associated with reduced FFM; the relationship between FFM and BFM with T2DM remains unclear. Reducing VFM and increasing FFM through lifestyle changes may reduce the risk of T2DM and mitigate its deleterious effect on BC, respectively.

Abstract
AIMS/INTRODUCTION Non-alcoholic fatty liver disease is frequently associated with type 2 diabetes, and constitutes an important risk factor for the development of hepatic fibrosis and hepatocellular carcinoma. Because there remains no effective drug therapy for non-alcoholic fatty liver disease associated with type 2 diabetes, we evaluated the efficacy of sodium-glucose cotransporter 2 inhibitor. METHODS AND MATERIALS In the present pilot, prospective, non-randomized, open-label, single-arm study, we evaluated the effect of 100 mg canagliflozin administered once daily for 12 months on serological markers, body composition measured by bioelectrical impedance analysis method and hepatic fat fraction measured by magnetic resonance imaging in type 2 diabetes patients with non-alcoholic fatty liver disease. RESULTS Canagliflozin significantly reduced body and fat mass, and induced a slight decrease in lean body or muscle mass that did not reach significance at 6 and 12 months. Reductions in fat mass in each body segment (trunk, arms and legs) were evident, whereas those in lean body mass were not. The hepatic fat fraction was reduced from a baseline of 17.6 ± 7.5% to 12.0 ± 4.6% after 6 months and 12.1 ± 6.1% after 12 months (P < 0.0005 and P < 0.005), whereas serum liver enzymes and type IV collagen concentrations improved. From a mean baseline hemoglobin A1c of 8.7 ± 1.4%, canagliflozin significantly reduced hemoglobin A1c after 6 and 12 months to 7.3 ± 0.6% and 7.7 ± 0.7% (P < 0.0005 and P < 0.01). CONCLUSIONS Canagliflozin reduced body mass, fat mass and hepatic fat content without significantly reducing muscle mass.

Abstract
Aims To study the associations between fat distribution and lung functions in healthy subjects of young adults and to explore potential gender difference in these correlations. Methods A total of 2101 adult participants were recruited. Height, weight, and vital capacity index (VCI) were measured and recorded according to the national physical fitness test standard. Body compositions, including body mass index (BMI), body fat percentage (BFP), waist-to-hip ratio (WHR), fat-free mass (FFM), trunk muscle mass (TMM), fat mass (FM), visceral fat area (VFA), visceral adipose tissue (VAT), and subcutaneous adipose tissue (SAT), were conducted using body composition analyzer. Data were analyzed by SPSS 20.0 software. Results We found that male participants showed significantly higher BMI, WHR, FFM, TMM, VFA, and VCI, but lower FM, BFP, and SAT in comparison with women. However, there was no significant difference in VAT between the male and female. Lung functions represented by VCI were negatively correlated with FM, VAT, SAT, and VFA for both men and women (r < 0; P < 0.05). Among these negative correlations, VCI was more inversely correlated with VFA for men but with SAT for women, respectively. After dividing the whole populations by BMI, BFP, and WHR, further correlation analysis showed VCI was still more negatively correlated with VFA for all male subgroups (r < 0; P < 0.05). On the contrary, VCI was more negatively correlated with SAT in BMI-underweight, BMI-normal, BFP-low fat, BFP-normal fat, WHR-normal, and WHR-obese subgroups (r < 0; P < 0.05), while VFA and VAT was more inversely correlated with VCI in BMI- and BFP-overweight+obese subgroups (r < 0; P < 0.05). Conclusions Fat accumulation is highly associated with the vital capacity index in young adults. In general, VCI was more negatively correlated with VFA for men but with SAT for women, respectively, in comparison with other tested indices.

Abstract
The bioelectrical impedance analysis (BIA) method is widely used to predict percent body fat (PBF). However, it requires four to eight electrodes, and it takes a few minutes to accurately obtain the measurement results. In this study, we propose a faster and more accurate method that utilizes a small dry electrode-based wearable device, which predicts whole-body impedance using only upper-body impedance values. Such a small electrode-based device typically needs a long measurement time due to increased parasitic resistance, and its accuracy varies by measurement posture. To minimize these variations, we designed a sensing system that only utilizes contact with the wrist and index fingers. The measurement time was also reduced to five seconds by an effective parameter calibration network. Finally, we implemented a deep neural network-based algorithm to predict the PBF value by the measurement of the upper-body impedance and lower-body anthropometric data as auxiliary input features. The experiments were performed with 163 amateur athletes who exercised regularly. The performance of the proposed system was compared with those of two commercial systems that were designed to measure body composition using either a whole-body or upper-body impedance value. The results showed that the correlation coefficient (r2) value was improved by about 9%, and the standard error of estimate (SEE) was reduced by 28%.

Abstract
Dual-energy X-ray absorptiometry (DXA) is rapidly becoming more accessible and popular as a technique to monitor body composition. The reliability of DXA has been examined extensively using a number of different methodological approaches. This study sets up to investigate the accuracy of measuring the parameters of body composition (BC) by means of the whole-body and the segmental DXA method analysis with the typical error of measurement (TEM) that allows for expressing the error in the units of measure. The research was implemented in a group of 63 participants, all of whom were university students. Thirty-eight males (22.6±2.9 years, average body mass 77.5±8.4 kg) and 25 females (21.4±2.0 years, average body mass 58.6±7.2 kg) were recruited. The measured parameters included body mass (BM), fat-free mass (FFM), body fat (BF), bone mineral content (BMC), bone mineral density (BMD). For the whole-body analysis, the determined TEM was: BM at the level of 0.12 kg in females and 0.29 kg in males; BF 0.25kg and 0.44% females, 0.52 kg and 0.66% males; FFM 0.24 kg females and 0.42 kg males; BMC 0.02 kg females and males; BMD 0.01g/cm2 females and males. The TEM values in the segmental analysis were: BF within the range of 0.04-0.28 kg and 0.68-1.20% in females, 0.10-0.36 kg and 0.72-1.94% in males; FFM 0.08-0.41 kg females and 0.17-0.86 males, BMC 0.00-0.02 kg females and 0.01-0.02 kg males in relation to the body segment (upper limb, trunk, lower limb). The BMD value was at the level of 0.01-0.02g/cm2. The study results showed high reliability in measuring body composition parameters using the DXA method. The whole-body analysis showed a higher accuracy of measurement than the segmental. Only the changes that are greater than the TEM, or the upper bound (95%) of the confidence interval of the measurement can be considered demonstrable when interpreting repeated measurements.

Abstract
Objective The dose of neuromuscular blocking drugs is commonly based on body weight, but using muscle mass might be more effective. This study investigated the relationship between the effect of neuromuscular blocking drugs and muscle mass measured using bioelectrical impedance analysis. Methods Patients who were scheduled for elective surgery using a muscle relaxant were screened for inclusion in this study. Under intravenous anaesthesia, 12 mg or 9 mg of rocuronium was administered to males and females, respectively; and the maximal relaxation effect of T1 was measured using a TOF-Watch-SX® acceleromyograph. Results This study enrolled 40 patients; 20 males and 20 females. For both sexes, the maximal relaxation effect of T1 did not correlate with the body weight-based dose of neuromuscular blocking drugs (males, r2 = 0.12; females, r2 = 0.26). Instead, it correlated with the dose based on bioelectrical impedance analysis-measured muscle mass when injected with the same dose of rocuronium (males, r2 = 0.78, female, r2 = 0.82). Conclusions This study showed that the muscle relaxation effect of rocuronium was correlated with muscle mass and did not correlate with body weight when using the same dose. Therefore, a muscle mass-based dose of neuromuscular blocking drugs is recommended.

Abstract
This study aimed to compare the use of the bioelectrical impedance device (BIA) seca® mBCA 515 using dual X-ray absorptiometry (DXA) as a reference method, for body composition assessment in adults across the spectrum of body mass indices. It explores the utility of simple anthropometric measures (the waist height ratio (WHtR) and waist circumference (WC)) for the assessment of obesity. In the morning after an overnight fast (10 h), 30 participants underwent a body composition DXA (GE iDXA) scan, BIA (seca 515), and anthropometric measures. Compared to the DXA reference measure, the BIA underestimated fat mass (FM) by 0.32 kg (limits of agreement −3.8 kg, 4.4 kg); overestimated fat free mass (FFM) by 0.43 kg (limits of agreement −8.2 kg, 4.3 kg). Some of the variation was explained by body mass index (BMI), as for FM, the mean difference of the normal range BMI group was smaller than for the overweight/obese group (0.25 kg and 0.35 kg, respectively) with wider limits of agreement (−4.30 kg, 4.81 kg, and −3.61 kg, 4.30 kg, respectively). There were significant differences in visceral adipose tissue (VAT) volume measurements between methods with BIA systematically overestimating VAT compared to DXA. WC was more strongly correlated with DXA FM (rho = 0.90, p < 0.001) than WHtR (rho = 0.83, p < 0.001). BIA had some agreement with DXA; however, they are not equivalent measures for the range of BMIs explored, with DXA remaining the more informative tool. WC is a useful and simple assessment tool for obesity.

Abstract
Dual-energy X-ray absorptiometry (DXA) has been considered a reference method for measuring body fat percentage (BF%) in children and adolescents with an excess of adiposity. However, given that the DXA technique is impractical for routine field use, there is a need to investigate other methods that can accurately determine BF%. We studied the accuracy of bioelectrical impedance analysis (BIA) technology, including foot-to-foot and hand-to-foot impedance, and Slaughter skinfold-thickness equations in the measurement of BF%, compared with DXA, in a population of Latin American children and adolescents with an excess of adiposity. A total of 127 children and adolescents (11–17 years of age; 70% girls) from the HEPAFIT (Exercise Training and Hepatic Metabolism in Overweight/Obese Adolescent) study were included in the present work. BF% was measured on the same day using two BIA analysers (Seca® 206, Allers Hamburg, Germany and Model Tanita® BC-418®, TANITA Corporation, Sportlife Tokyo, Japan), skinfold measurements (Slaughter equation), and DXA (Hologic Horizon DXA System®, Quirugil, Bogotá, Columbia). Agreement between measurements was analysed using t-tests, Bland–Altman plots, and Lin’s concordance correlation coefficient (ρc). There was a significant correlation between DXA and the other BF% measurement methods (r > 0.430). According to paired t-tests, in both sexes, BF% assessed by BIA analysers or Slaughter equations differ from BF% assessed by DXA (p < 0.001). The lower and upper limits of the differences compared with DXA were 6.3–22.9, 2.2–2.8, and −3.2–21.3 (95% CI) in boys and 2.3–14.8, 2.4–20.1, and 3.9–18.3 (95% CI) in girls for Seca® mBCA, Tanita® BC 420MA, and Slaughter equations, respectively. Concordance was poor between DXA and the other methods of measuring BF% (ρc < 0.5). BIA analysers and Slaughter equations underestimated BF% measurements compared to DXA, so they are not interchangeable methods for assessing BF% in Latin American children and adolescents with excess of adiposity.

Abstract
With the number of individuals older than 65 years expected to rise significantly over the next few decades, dramatic changes to our society and health care system will need to take place to meet their needs. Age-related changes in muscle mass and body composition along with medical comorbidities including stroke, dementia, and depression place elderly adults at high risk for developing malnutrition and frailty. This loss of function and decline in muscle mass (ie, sarcopenia) can be associated with reduced mobility and ability to perform the task of daily living, placing the elderly at an increased risk for falls, fractures, and subsequent institutionalization, leading to a decline in the quality of life and increased mortality. There are a number of modifiable factors that can mitigate some of the muscle loss elderly experience especially when hospitalized. Due to this, it is paramount for providers to understand the pathophysiology behind malnutrition and sarcopenia, be able to assess risk factors for malnutrition, and provide appropriate nutrition support. The present review describes the pathophysiology of malnutrition, identifies contributing factors to this condition, discusses tools to assess nutritional status, and proposes key strategies for optimizing enteral nutrition therapy for the elderly.

Abstract
BACKGROUND AND AIMS Body composition assessment is often used in clinical practice for nutritional evaluation and monitoring. The standard method, dual-energy X-ray absorptiometry (DXA), is hardly feasible in routine clinical practice contrary to Bioelectrical Impedance Analysis (BIA) method. We thus aimed to compare body composition assessment by DXA and BIA according to the body mass index (BMI) in a large cohort. METHODS Retrospectively, we analysed DXA and BIA measures in patients followed in a Nutrition Unit from 2010 to 2016. Body composition was assessed under standardized conditions in the morning, after a fasting period of 12 h, by DXA (Lunar Prodigy Advance) and BIA (Bodystat QuadScan 4000, Manufacturer's equation). Bland-Altman test was performed for each class of BMI (kg/m2) and fat mass and fat free mass values were compared using Kruskal-Wallis test. Pearson correlations were also performed and the concordance coefficient of Lin was calculated. RESULTS Whatever the BMI, BIA and DXA methods reported higher concordance for values of FM than FFM. Body composition values were very closed for patients with BMI between 16 and 18,5 (difference < 1kg). For BMI > 18,5 and BMI < 40, BIA overestimated fat free mass from 3,38 to 8,28 kg, and underestimated fat mass from 2,51 to 5,67 kg compared with DXA method. For BMI ≥ 40, differences vary with BMI. For BMI < 16, BIA underestimated fat free mass by 2,25 kg, and overestimated fat mass by 2,57 kg. However, limits of agreement were very large either for FM and FFM values, irrespective of BMI. CONCLUSION The small bias, particularly in patients with BMI between 16 and 18, suggests that BIA and DXA methods are interchangeable at a population level. However, concordance between BIA and DXA methods at the individual level is lacking, irrespective of BMI.

Abstract
BACKGROUND/OBJECTIVES Low agreement of body-composition analysis (BCA) using dual-energy X-ray absorptiometry (DXA) and multi-frequency bioelectrical impedance analysis (MF-BIA) has been reported. We examined whether this discrepancy is influenced by the precision of body weight (BW) measurement using DXA. SUBJECTS/METHODS This cross-sectional study enrolled 1353 participants aged 53-83 years. A whole-body DXA scan and an eight-polar tactile-electrode impedance-meter using four electronic frequencies of 5, 50, 250, and 500 kHz were employed for BCA. The level of agreement between BW estimated using DXA and actual BW (WgtA) was calculated. The agreement of BCA parameters using DXA and MF-BIA across WgtA groups was also assessed. RESULTS DXA incorrectly estimated BW, especially in men. In total, 13.5%, 5.1%, and 5.6% of the participants had BW bias levels of 2%, 3%, and ≥4%, respectively. Correlations of BCA parameters measured using DXA and MF-BIA, including body fat mass, percent body fat, and lean body mass (LBM), were gradually reduced, whereas the root mean square error was increased in accordance with the reduction in WgtA. DXA provided a lower LBM amount compared to MF-BIA and this difference increased significantly across groups with poor WgtA. CONCLUSIONS Lower WgtA greatly contributed to the difference in BCA measured using DXA and MF-BIA.

Abstract
Bioimpedance analysis (BIA) and dual energy X-ray absorptiometry (DXA) are commonly utilized for total and segmental body composition assessment, but the agreement between these methods varies. Group (i.e., constant error [CE]) and individual error (i.e., standard error of estimate [SEE] and 95% limits of agreement [LOAs]) of single-frequency BIA were determined in apparently healthy men and women (n = 28 and 45, respectively) when using DXA as a reference method. It was hypothesized that single-frequency BIA would provide lower error for the estimation of total and segmental FFM than FM and BF%. The CE for many of the total and segmental body composition comparisons revealed statistically significant (all P < .05) mean differences (FMTOTAL, FMLEGS, FFMTOTAL, FFMARMS, FFMLEGS, FFMTRUNK, BF%TOTAL and BF%ARMS for both sexes as well as FMTRUNK and BF%TRUNK for women and FMARMS and FMLEGS for men). Although there were significant CEs for many comparisons, the individual error (i.e., SEEs and 95% LOAs) for total and segmental FFM were small whereas FM and BF% were large. Furthermore, the individual error tended to be larger for men than women when estimating FM and BF%, which is likely attributed to the larger segmental mass of men. This finding indicates the agreement between single-frequency BIA and DXA varies based on sex and segmental mass. Consequently, single-frequency BIA can be used for total and segmental FFM, but is not recommended for FM and BF%.

Abstract
Predictive equations have been specifically developed for obese patients to estimate resting energy expenditure (REE). Body composition (BC) assessment is needed for some of these equations. We assessed the impact of BC methods on the accuracy of specific predictive equations developed in obese patients. REE was measured (mREE) by indirect calorimetry and BC assessed by bioelectrical impedance analysis (BIA) and dual-energy X-ray absorptiometry (DXA). mREE, percentages of prediction accuracy (±10% of mREE) were compared. Predictive equations were studied in 2588 obese patients. Mean mREE was 1788 ± 6.3 kcal/24 h. Only the Müller (BIA) and Harris & Benedict (HB) equations provided REE with no difference from mREE. The Huang, Müller, Horie-Waitzberg, and HB formulas provided a higher accurate prediction (>60% of cases). The use of BIA provided better predictions of REE than DXA for the Huang and Müller equations. Inversely, the Horie-Waitzberg and Lazzer formulas provided a higher accuracy using DXA. Accuracy decreased when applied to patients with BMI ≥ 40, except for the Horie-Waitzberg and Lazzer (DXA) formulas. Müller equations based on BIA provided a marked improvement of REE prediction accuracy than equations not based on BC. The interest of BC to improve REE predictive equations accuracy in obese patients should be confirmed.
