Abstract
CONTEXT The co-occurrence of hormonal changes during menopause and the risk of cardio-metabolic disorders has been well studied. OBJECTIVE We explored the association of circulating levels of follicle-stimulating hormone (FSH) with diabetes (DM) among postmenopausal women. METHOD In this systematic review and meta-analysis, the search was performed in PubMed, Scopus, Web of Sciences, Epistemonikos, and Cochrane Library up to September 2023. Risk of bias was assessed by Newcastle-Ottawa Quality Assessment Scale. Pooled estimates of mean differences in FSH levels were compared between postmenopausal women with and without DM. Correlations between FSH and fasting blood glucose (FBG)/insulin/homeostatic model assessment for insulin resistance (HOMA-IR) as well as pooled effect sizes with their 95% CIs for risk of DM were calculated. RESULTS In this study, 14 articles, including 7878 postmenopausal women, met eligibility criteria. Most of the included studies had a low/moderate risk of bias. Women with DM had significantly lower FSH levels than those without DM (standardized mean difference [SMD] -0.751 [95% CI, -1.129 to -.372], I2 = 82.46%, n = 1416). The pooled effect size for diabetes was 0.861 (95% CI, 0.740-1.001; I2 = 80.11%). The pooled risk estimate for DM based on the categorical FSH levels (high vs low) was (HR = 0.550; 95% CI, 0.356-0.850, I2 = 0). The significant inverse correlation was found between FSH levels and glycemic parameters: FBG (r= -0.285 [95% CI -0.441 to -0.113]; n = 1229), HOMA-IR (r = -0.241[-0.378 to -0.0924]; n = 1229) and insulin (r = -0.337 [-0.434 to -0.232]; n = 959)]. There were no statistically significant differences between estradiol levels among diabetic and nondiabetic groups; however, the SMD for luteinizing hormone was similar to that reported for FSH. CONCLUSION The available data indicated an indirect association between FSH levels and glucose disturbances among postmenopausal women, notwithstanding heterogeneity among included studies, and the complexity of various influential factors needs to be considered. Further efforts should be made to clarify the underlying mechanisms.

Abstract
As the incidence of type 2 diabetes mellitus (T2DM) is increasing rapidly and its consequences are severe, effective intervention and prevention, including sleep-related interventions, are urgently needed. As a component of sleep architecture, naps, alone or in combination with nocturnal sleep, may influence the onset and progression of T2DM. Overall, napping is associated with an increased risk of T2DM in women, especially in postmenopausal White women. Our study showed that napping >30 minutes (min) increased the risk of T2DM by 8-21%. In addition, non-optimal nighttime sleep increases T2DM risk, and this effect combines with the effect of napping. For nondiabetic patients, napping >30 min could increase the risks of high HbA1c levels and impaired fasting glucose (IFG), which would increase the risk of developing T2DM later on. For diabetic patients, prolonged napping may further impair glycemic control and increase the risk of developing diabetic complications (e.g., diabetic nephropathy) in the distant future. The following three mechanisms are suggested as interpretations for the association between napping and T2DM. First, napping >30 min increases the levels of important inflammatory factors, including interleukin 6 and C-reactive protein, elevating the risks of inflammation, associated adiposity and T2DM. Second, the interaction between postmenopausal hormonal changes and napping further increases insulin resistance. Third, prolonged napping may also affect melatonin secretion by interfering with nighttime sleep, leading to circadian rhythm disruption and further increasing the risk of T2DM. This review summarizes the existing evidence on the effect of napping on T2DM and provides detailed information for future T2DM intervention and prevention strategies that address napping.

Abstract
Metabolic health is characterized by optimal blood glucose, lipids, cholesterol, blood pressure, and adiposity. Alterations in these characteristics may lead to the development of type 2 diabetes mellitus or dyslipidemia. Recent evidence suggests that female reproductive characteristics may be overlooked as risk factors that contribute to later metabolic dysfunction. These reproductive traits include the age at menarche, menstrual irregularity, the development of polycystic ovary syndrome, gestational weight change, gestational dysglycemia and dyslipidemia, and the severity and timing of menopausal symptoms. These risk factors may themselves be markers of future dysfunction or may be explained by shared underlying etiologies that promote long-term disease development. Disentangling underlying relationships and identifying potentially modifiable characteristics have an important bearing on therapeutic lifestyle modifications that could ease long-term metabolic burden. Further research that better characterizes associations between reproductive characteristics and metabolic health, clarifies underlying etiologies, and identifies indicators for clinical application is warranted in the prevention and management of metabolic dysfunction.

Abstract
Objective The effects of insulin resistance (IR) on bone mineral density (BMD) are unclear. This investigation aimed to assess the impact of IR and hyperinsulinemia on bone health. Determine whether IR mediates the link between follicle-stimulating hormone (FSH) and bone mass in nondiabetic postmenopausal women. Design Retrospective cross-sectional study. Setting Health checkup center of Hangzhou Women's Hospital. Methods This study comprised 437 nondiabetic postmenopausal women. BMD was evaluated using dual-energy X-rays. Fasting sera were analyzed for insulin and glucose levels, and indicators related to IR were determined. By pathway analysis, we examined the indirect effects of FSH on BMD via the mediators Homeostatic Model Assessment for insulin resistance (HOMA-IR) and fasting insulin (FINS) after correction for confounding factors. Result After adjusting for age and body mass index (BMI) in linear regression, HOMA-IR and FINS were linked with FSH (P<0.05). IR was stronger among women in the normal BMD group than those in the osteoporosis or osteopenia group. In unadjusted models, BMD was greater in those with higher HOMA-IR and FINS (β=0.027, P=0.006 and β=0.033, P=0.003, respectively). After correcting for BMI and other possible variables, these associations remained. In addition, path models for FSH demonstrated a negative association with BMD by HOMA-IR (95% confidence interval [CI]: -0.0174 to -0.0014) and FINS (95% CI: -0.0188 to -0.002). Conclusion Greater IR was associated with increased BMD in nondiabetic postmenopausal women, regardless of BMI and other variables. HOMA-IR or FINS could play a novel mediating role in FSH-induced BMD suppression.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Several studies have explored the connection between follicle-stimulating hormone (FSH) and nonalcoholic fatty liver disease (NAFLD). However, the impact of FSH elevation on NAFLD remains a topic of debate. Hence, this investigation aimed to evaluate the potential correlation between FSH levels and NAFLD in the aging population. METHODS This was a retrospective observational cross-sectional study between July 2017 and August 2018 in our hospital. We used data obtained from 455 patients over 60 years old. Anthropometrics and laboratory tests were performed for each patient. NAFLD was diagnosed by sonographic features and the fatty liver index (LFI). RESULTS Of the 455 patients, 200 (43.96%) had NAFLD on their ultrasound and 169 (37.14%) had NAFLD according to the LFI. An intraclass correlation coefficient of the two methods was 80.4% (P < 0.001). People with NAFLD on their ultrasound showed lower FSH levels (52.68 vs. 61.39 IU/L) and more unfavorable metabolic profiles. FSH was negatively correlated with age, alanine aminotransferase, estradiol, testosterone, systolic blood pressure, waist, body mass index, fasting blood glucose, postload plasma glucose and positive associated with total cholesterol, high-density lipoprotein-cholesterol and low-density lipoprotein-cholesterol by Spearman correlation analysis (all P < 0.05). By controlling for all confounding factors, the odds ratios (OR) of FSH for NAFLD were determined in elderly individuals, both men and women, aged 60-70 years and over 70 years. These ORs were found to be 0.937, 0.982, 0.983, and 0.973, respectively, with corresponding 95% confidence intervals (CI) of 0.892-0.984 (P = 0.009), 0.971-0.993 (P = 0.002), 0.967-0.999 (P = 0.033), and 0.958-0.989 (P = 0.001). In addition, our findings demonstrated no significant correlation between FSH and advanced fibrosis when adjusting for potential covariates. The OR for advanced fibrosis was 0.979 (95% CI, 0.938-1.022, P = 0.339). Additionally, ROC curve analysis showed an optimal cut-off value of 66.91 for women and 15.25 for men for NAFLD diagnosis. CONCLUSIONS There was an inverse relationship observed between levels of FSH in the blood serum and NAFLD in the elderly population. These findings suggest that reduced FSH levels might serve as a potential risk factor or biomarker for NAFLD in the elderly.

Abstract
BACKGROUND AND AIM Follicle-stimulating hormone (FSH) was negatively associated with nonalcoholic fatty liver disease (NAFLD) in women older than 55 years old. People with obesity and diabetes had higher prevalence of NAFLD. Thus, we aimed to explore the association between FSH and NAFLD in postmenopausal women with type 2 diabetes mellitus (T2DM). METHODS A total of 583 postmenopausal women with T2DM with an average age of 60.22 ± 6.49 were recruited in this cross-sectional study through January 2017 to May 2021. Anthropological data, biochemical indexes, and abdominal ultrasound results were retrospectively collected. Abdominal ultrasound was used to diagnose NAFLD. FSH was measured by enzymatic immunochemiluminescence and divided into tertiles for further analysis. The logistic regression was used to assess the association of FSH with prevalent NAFLD. Likelihood ratio tests were used to assess the interactions between groups. RESULTS A total of 332 (56.94%) postmenopausal women had NAFLD. Compared with postmenopausal women in the lowest tertile of FSH, postmenopausal women in the highest tertile of FSH had lower prevalence of NAFLD (p < .01). After adjusting for age, diabetes duration, metabolism-related indicators, and other sex-related hormones, FSH was inversely associated with NAFLD (odds ratio: 0.411, 95% confidence intervals: 0.260-0.651, p < .001). In subgroup analysis, there were no significant interactions of FSH with strata of metabolic factors on the association of NAFLD. CONCLUSION FSH was negatively and independently associated with NAFLD in postmenopausal women with type 2 diabetes mellitus. It might be a potential index for screening and identifying individuals with high risk of NAFLD in postmenopausal women.

Abstract
AIMS Follicle-stimulating hormone (FSH) is associated with higher risks of metabolic syndrome and diabetes in menopausal women. We aimed to investigate whether FSH was associated with the lipid profile in women older than 55 years. DESIGN The data were obtained from a cross-sectional study. PARTICIPANTS Our data were from the Survey on Prevalence in East China for Metabolic Diseases and Risk Factors (China, including Shanghai and Zhejiang, Jiangxi and Anhui provinces). A total of 1795 women older than 55 years were selected. METHODS Morning serum sex hormones and lipid profiles were measured. Linear and logistic regression analyses were used to analyse the data. RESULTS Lower FSH was associated with lower high-density lipoprotein cholesterol (HDL-C) and higher triglycerides (TG), total cholesterol (TC)/HDL-C ratio and low-density lipoprotein cholesterol (LDL-C)/HDL-C ratio (all p for trend <0.05) after adjusting for age and other sex hormones. After further adjustment for body mass index, diabetes and hypertension, the associations of FSH with the lipid profile weakened, but the associations of FSH quartiles with HDL-C and the TC/HDL-C ratio were still significant (both p for trend <0.05). Compared with women in the highest FSH quartile, the odds of low HDL-C (HDL-C<1.04 mmol/L) in women in the lowest FSH quartile were 5.25 (95% CI 1.60 to 17.26) (p for trend <0.05) in the fully adjusted model, and the odds of TC≥6.22 mmol/L, TGs≥2.26 mmol/L and LDL-C≥4.14 mmol/L were not significant. Luteinising hormone did not show a significant association with dyslipidaemia. CONCLUSION Lower FSH was associated with a worse lipid profile in women older than 55. Diabetes, adiposity and hypertension mostly explained the association of FSH with TGs and the LDL-C/HDL-C ratio but only partially explained the associations of FSH with HDL-C and the TC/HDL-C ratio.

Abstract
Previous studies demonstrated associations of endogenous sex hormones with diabetes. Less is known about their dynamic relationship with diabetes progression through different stages of the disease, independence of associations, and role of the hypothalamic-pituitary gonadal axis. The purpose of this analysis was to examine relationships of endogenous sex hormones with incident diabetes, prediabetes, and diabetes traits in 693 postmenopausal women and 1015 men aged 45 to 74 years without diabetes at baseline participating in the Hispanic Community Health Study/Study of Latinos and followed for 6 years. Baseline hormones included estradiol, luteinizing hormone (LH), follicle stimulating hormone (FSH), sex hormone-binding globulin (SHBG), dehydroepiandrosterone sulfate (DHEAS), and, in men, testosterone and bioavailable testosterone. Associations were analyzed using multivariable Poisson and linear regressions. In men, testosterone was inversely associated with conversion from prediabetes to diabetes (incidence rate ratio [IRR] for 1 SD increase in testosterone: 0.821; 95% CI, 0.676, 0.997; P = 0.046), but not conversion from normoglycemia to prediabetes. Estradiol was positively associated with increase in fasting insulin and homeostatic model assessment of insulin resistance. In women, SHBG was inversely associated with change in glycosylated hemoglobin, postload glucose, and conversion from prediabetes to diabetes (IRR = 0.62; 95% CI, 0.44, 0.86, P = 0.005) but not from normoglycemia to prediabetes. Relationships with other hormones varied across glycemic measures. Stronger associations of testosterone and SHBG with transition from prediabetes to diabetes than from normoglycemic to prediabetes suggest they are operative at later stages of diabetes development. Biologic pathways by which sex hormones affect glucose homeostasis await future studies.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Diminished/decreased ovarian reserve (DOR) is a disorder of ovarian function, which severely affects women's reproductive health. Accumulating evidence has found that adverse environmental factors can affect ovarian function. However, whether synthetic phenolic antioxidants (SPAs) exposure is associated with DOR is still unknown. OBJECTIVES We explored whether concentrations of SPAs and their metabolites are associated with DOR. METHODS A case-control study was conducted from January 2019 to January 2020 in China. One hundred eighty-one women 20-44 years of age, with (case group, n=63) and without DOR (control group, n=118) were included in our study. The follicular fluid concentrations of typical SPAs and their metabolites were measured, including butylated hydroxyanisole (BHA), tert-butylhydroquinone (TBHQ), butylated hydroxytoluene (BHT), and five BHT metabolites [3,5-di-tert-butyl-4-hydroxy-benzylalcohol (BHT-OH), 3,5-di-tert-butyl-4-hydroxybenzaldehyde (BHT-CHO), 3,5-di-tert-butyl-4-hydroxybenzoic acid (BHT-COOH), 2,6-di-tert-butyl-1,4-benzoquinone (BHT-Q), and 2,6-di-tert-butyl-4-hydroxy-4-methylcyclohexa-2,5-dien-1-one (BHT-quinol)]. Information about serum basal concentrations of follicle-stimulating hormone (FSH), luteinizing hormone (LH), estradiol (E2), and anti-Müllerian hormone (AMH) and the basal antral follicle count (AFC) was collected. RESULTS The measured frequencies of BHA, TBHQ, BHT, BHT-OH, BHT-CHO, BHT-COOH, BHT-Q, and BHT-quinol in follicular fluid were 1.7%, 2.2%, 40.3%, 46.4%, 57.5%, 100%, 64.6%, and 49.2%, respectively. The concentrations of BHT-CHO (0.49 ng/mL vs. 0.12 ng/mL, p=0.041), BHT-COOH (0.45 ng/mL vs. 0.28 ng/mL, p<0.001), BHT-Q (0.70 ng/mL vs. 0.13 ng/mL, p<0.001), and the sum of five BHT metabolites (Σ5metabolites; 1.79 ng/mL vs. 1.0 ng/mL, p<0.001) in the case group were significantly higher than those in the control group. The risk of DOR was further analyzed according to the tertiles of chemical concentration. Compared with the low levels of BHT metabolites, the adjusted odds ratios (ORs) for DOR were significantly increased in the high levels of BHT-CHO [OR=3.19, 95% confidence interval (CI): 1.22, 8.31, p=0.018], BHT-COOH [OR=4.73 (95% CI: 1.63, 13.71), p=0.004], and BHT-Q [OR=4.48 (95% CI: 1.69, 11.86), p=0.003] after adjusting for age, body mass index, education, infertility type, triglycerides, and total cholesterol. Moreover, compared with the low level of Σ5metabolites, increased adjusted ORs for DOR were found both in the middle level [OR=4.11 (95% CI: 1.44, 11.75), p=0.008] and high level [OR=5.51 (95% CI: 1.81, 16.77), p=0.003], showing an obvious dose-response relationship (pTrend=0.003). CONCLUSION In this study, we report the measured frequency and concentrations of BHA, TBHQ, BHT, and their metabolites in follicular fluid. Moreover, we found the concentrations of BHT metabolites, especially BHT-CHO, BHT-COOH, and BHT-Q, are positively associated with the increased risk of DOR. https://doi.org/10.1289/EHP11309.

Abstract
INTRODUCTION Associations of luteinizing hormone (LH) with androgens during the menopausal transition and associations between follicle-stimulating hormone (FSH) levels and various diseases related to reproductive hormones in postmenopause have received much attention. LH and FSH are also known to be associated with activities of enzymes related to reproductive hormones. We examined the associations of LH and FSH with androgens and estrogens in each stage of the menopausal transition according to a classification from menopausal transition to postmenopause. METHODS This study was a cross-sectional design. We basically used the Stage of Reproductive Aging Workshop (STRAW) + 10. We divided the 173 subjects into 6 groups according to menstrual regularity and follicle-stimulating hormone level: mid reproductive stage (Group A), late reproductive stage (Group B), early menopausal transition (Group C), late menopausal transition (Group D), very early postmenopause (Group E) and early postmenopause (Group F). Levels of LH, FSH, dehydroepiandrosterone sulfate (DHEAS), estradiol, estrone, testosterone (T), free T, androstenedione and androstenediol were measured. RESULTS In Group A, LH showed significant positive correlations with androstenedione and estrone. In Group D, LH was positively associated with T and free T and was negatively associated with estradiol. In Groups B, C, D and F, LH showed significant positive correlations with FSH, and there was a tendency for an association between LH and FSH in Group E. FSH was associated with estradiol but not with estrone in Groups C and D. CONCLUSION The associations of LH and FSH with reproductive hormones are different depending on the stage of the menopausal transition. Abstract
Inter-organ communication is a major hallmark of health and is often orchestrated by hormones released by the anterior pituitary gland. Pituitary gonadotropes secrete follicle-stimulating hormone (FSH) and luteinizing hormone (LH) to regulate gonadal function and control fertility. Whether FSH and LH also act on organs other than the gonads is debated. Here, we find that gonadotrope depletion in adult female mice triggers profound hypogonadism, obesity, glucose intolerance, fatty liver, and bone loss. The absence of sex steroids precipitates these phenotypes, with the notable exception of fatty liver, which results from ovary-independent actions of FSH. We uncover paracrine FSH action on pituitary corticotropes as a mechanism to restrain the production of corticosterone and prevent hepatic steatosis. Our data demonstrate that functional communication of two distinct hormone-secreting cell populations in the pituitary regulates hepatic lipid metabolism.

Abstract
Regular exercise is associated with substantial health benefits for individuals with type 1 diabetes (T1D). However, the fear of hypoglycemia (low blood glucose) due to activity-induced declines in blood glucose levels acts as a major barrier to partaking in exercise in this population. For females with T1D, hormonal fluctuations during the menstrual cycle and their effects on blood glucose levels can act as an additional barrier. The impact that these cyclic changes may have on blood glucose and insulin needs and the consequent risk of hypoglycemia during or after exercise are still unknown in this population. Therefore, in this narrative review, we gathered existing knowledge about the menstrual cycle in T1D and the effects of different cyclic phases on substrate metabolism and glucose response to exercise in females with T1D to increase knowledge and understanding around exercise in this underrepresented population. This increased knowledge in such an understudied area can help to better inform exercise guidelines for females with T1D. It can also play an important role in eliminating a significant barrier to exercise in this population, which has the potential to increase activity, improve mental health and quality of life, and decrease the risk of diabetes-related complications.

Abstract
OBJECTIVE To explore whether and to what extent endogenous sex hormones mediate the association between overweight and diabetes risk in menopausal transition women. METHODS Premenopausal women were from the Study of Women's Health Across the Nation, with measurements of serum sex hormone including sex hormone binding globulin (SHBG), testosterone (T), estradiol (E2), follicle-stimulating hormone (FSH), and dehydroepiandrosterone sulfate (DHAS) in first postmenopausal follow-up. At the last postmenopausal follow-up, hyperglycemia status was confirmed. The partial least squares (PLS) regression method was used to extract hormonal signals associated with body mass index (BMI). Hyperglycemia was defined as individuals with prediabetes or diabetes; overweight was defined as BMI ≥ 25 kg/m2. Causal mediation analysis was used to examine the mediation effect on the association between perimenopause overweight and post-menopause hyperglycemia through PLS score and individual sex hormones. RESULTS The longitudinal study included 1438 normal glucose women with a baseline mean age (SD) of 46.5 (2.6) years and a mean follow-up period of 9.9 years. During the follow-up period, 145 (10.1) cases of hyperglycemia occurred. Compared with normal-weight participants, overweight women were associated with a higher hyperglycemia risk during the transition period (OR = 4.06, 95% CI: 2.52 to 6.80). Overweight women had higher T, E2, and lower SHBG, FSH, and DAHS concentrations (β = 0.26, 0.38, -0.52, -0.52, and -0.13, p < 0.05 for all). After adjusting for overweight and covariates, lower SHBG and FSH levels were associated with higher hyperglycemia risk (OR = 0.70 and 0.69, all p < 0.05). As a linear combination of sex hormones, the PLS score was positively associated with T, E2, and negatively with SHBG, FSH, and DHAS. PLS score interpreted 36.50% (p < 0.001) of the overweight-hyperglycemia association. Considering single-sex hormones, the mediation proportion of SHBG and FSH were 21.38% (p < 0.001) and 24.08% (p < 0.001). CONCLUSIONS Sex hormones mediated the association of overweight and diabetes risk in menopause transition women. SHBG and FSH have the dominant mediation effect.

Abstract
BACKGROUND The increased risk of metabolic syndrome (MetS) during the menopausal transition might partly attribute to the changes in follicle-stimulating hormone (FSH) and luteinizing hormone (LH). However, few studies were conducted to examine the associations of FSH and LH concentrations with MetS at the full range of reproductive aging, especially in the US population. The aim of this study is to examine the associations of FSH, LH, and LH/FSH ratio with the risk of MetS and severity score in the US women. METHODS Data were derived from the National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey. Women aged from 35 to 60 years were eligible. MetS was defined as having at least 3 of the following: a waist circumference ≥ 88 cm, a triglycerides level ≥ 150 mg/dL, a high density lipoprotein < 50 mg/dL, a systolic blood pressure ≥ 130 mm Hg or a diastolic blood pressure ≥ 85 mm Hg or taking hypertension medications, or a fasting plasma glucose level ≥100 mg/dL or taking diabetes medications. The MetS severity score was calculated according to race/ethnicity- specific equation. RESULTS There were 3,831 women included in this study. Increases in serum FSH and LH levels per 1 SD were separately linked to a 22.6% (OR: 0.774; 95% CI: 0.646, 0.929; and P= 0.006) and 18.5% (OR: 0.815; 95% CI: 0.690, 0.962; and P= 0.006) lower risk of MetS only in postmenopausal women. Meanwhile, increases in serum FSH and LH levels per 1SD were associated with a decrease of -0.157 (95% CI :-2.967, -2.034) and -0.078 (95% CI: -2.688, -1.806) MetS severity score in perimenopausal women and -0.195 (95% CI: -2.192, -1.023) and -0.098 (95% CI:-1.884, -0.733) in postmenopausal women. However, LH/FSH ratio had no connections with the risk of MetS and MetS severity score across the menopausal transition. CONCLUSIONS Elevated serum FSH and LH levels, but not LH/FSH ratio, were associated with a lower risk of MetS and MetS severity score, especially in postmenopausal women. Therefore, serum FSH and LH levels might be efficient predictors for screening and identifying women at risk of MetS across the menopausal transition.

Abstract
Purpose Recent studies have suggested that higher postmenopausal follicle stimulating hormone (FSH) may be associated with lower risk of diabetes. However, relatively little is known about postmenopausal FSH levels, including the level of variation between women and whether reproductive factors are associated with this variation. Methods We assessed the relationship of multiple reproductive factors with FSH levels among 588 postmenopausal women in the Kuopio Ischaemic Heart Disease Risk Factor Study. Participants were aged 53 to 73 years and not using hormone therapy at study enrollment (1998–2001) when reproductive factors were assessed and FSH was measured. Results After adjustment for age, menopause timing, sex steroid levels, adiposity and behavioral factors, we observed numbers of pregnancies and age at first birth were each inversely associated with FSH levels. For example, women with ≥ 3 births and an age at first birth ≥ 25 years had mean FSH levels that were 7.8 IU/L lower than those of women with 1–2 births and an age at first birth ≤ 24 years (P = 0.003). Number of miscarriages was inversely associated with FSH levels (-2.7 IU/L per miscarriage; P = 0.02). Women reporting 4 or more years of past hormone therapy use had significantly higher mean FSH levels than women who had never used hormone therapy (P for trend = 0.006). Conclusion Multiple reproductive factors were associated with postmenopausal FSH, independent of estradiol, adiposity and other confounders. These findings warrant replication and further exploration of potential underlying mechanism.

Abstract
Metabolic-associated fatty liver disease (MAFLD) was proposed by an international expert consensus to replace non-alcoholic fatty liver disease (NAFLD) in 2020. Previous studies have shown that sex hormones are strongly linked to NAFLD development. This study aims to explore whether sex hormones are associated with MAFLD and liver fat content (LFC) in a middle-aged and elderly community. The study included 732 subjects aged 50-80 years enrolled from communities. MAFLD was diagnosed using the 2020 International Expert Consensus. LFC was calculated using parameters from abdominal ultrasound images. Serum estradiol (E2), total testosterone (TT), sex hormone-binding globulin (SHBG), FSH, and LH were measured by chemiluminescent microparticle immunoassay. MAFLD was diagnosed in 107/304 (35.2%) men and 154/428 (35.2%) women. After adjustments for confounding factors, logistic regression analysis showed that SHBG was negatively correlated with MAFLD in men (OR, 0.95 [0.93-0.97], p < 0.001). In women, SHBG and FSH were negatively correlated with MAFLD (OR, 0.95 [0.94-0.97], p < 0.001; OR, 0.97 [0.96-0.98], p < 0.001). Multivariate linear regression analysis showed that SHBG was a negative factor for LFC in both men (standardized β = -0.188, p < 0.001) and women (standardized β = -0.184, p < 0.001). FSH was a negative factor for LFC in women (standardized β = -0.082, p = 0.046). SHBG was negatively correlated with MAFLD in middle-aged and elderly men and women. Moreover, FSH was negatively correlated, and bioactive testosterone was positively correlated with MAFLD in women. These findings suggest a relationship between sex hormones and MAFLD.

Abstract
Depletion of ovarian reserve during menopausal transition raises follicle-stimulating hormone (FSH) markedly and menopause is related to an increased risk for metabolic syndrome (MetS). This study examined the relationship between FSH and MetS in postmenopausal women.We evaluated the anthropometric values, lipid profiles, high-sensitivity C-reactive protein (hs-CRP) level, Homeostasis model assessment for insulin resistance (HOMA-IR), and serum adipokines levels in 219 postmenopausal women. Serum FSH and estradiol levels were significantly lower in the MetS group than in the non-MetS group. An inverse correlation was observed between FSH with body fat mass (BFM), and HOMA-IR, and a positive correlation was found between FSH and adiponectin level after adjustment for age, years since menopause, BMI, and serum estradiol.The odds ratio for MetS was higher significantly in the lowest quartile of FSH level than the highest quartile of FSH level (odd ratio = 1.32, 95% CI = 1.09-1.75). Our study showed an increased FSH level favored insulin sensitivity with a higher adiponectin and lower HOMA-IR as well as a lower incidence of MetS in postmenopausal women.These findings suggest a new approach to the role of FSH for regulating energy metabolism and for use as a biomarker of MetS risk in postmenopausal women.This systematic review is based on published researches, so there is no ethical approval required.

Abstract
INTRODUCTION Recent studies in postmenopausal women have found associations of follicle-stimulating hormone (FSH) levels with both glucose metabolism and bone turnover. The objective of the study was to investigate whether FSH may contribute to suppressed bone turnover markers (BTMs) in postmenopausal women with type 2 diabetes (T2D). MATERIALS AND METHODS 888 postmenopausal women with T2D, 352 nondiabetes (prediabetes plus normoglycemia) were included from the METAL study. HbA1c, sex hormones, 25-hydroxy vitamin D (25(OH)D), serum procollagen type I N-terminal propeptide (P1NP), and β-C-terminal telopeptide (β-CTX) were measured. RESULTS P1NP and β-CTX decreased in postmenopausal T2D women compared with nondiabetes controls (both p < 0.001). The major factors responsible for the changes in P1NP were HbA1c (β = - 0.050, p < 0.001), 25(OH)D (β = - 0.003, p = 0.006), FSH (β = 0.001, p = 0.044) and metformin (β = - 0.109, p < 0.001), for β-CTX were HbA1c (β = - 0.049, p < 0.001), body mass index (BMI) (β = - 0.011, p = 0.005), 25(OH)D (β = - 0.003, p = 0.003), FSH (β = 0.002, p = 0.022) and metformin (β = - 0.091, p = 0.001) in postmenopausal T2D women based on multivariate regression analysis. With the increase in HbA1c, FSH decreased significantly (p for trend < 0.001). Mediation analysis demonstrated that FSH partly mediated the suppression of LnP1NP and Lnβ-CTX by HbA1c (β = - 0.009 and - 0.010, respectively), and Lnβ-CTX by BMI (β = - 0.015) when multiple confounders were considered (all p < 0.05). CONCLUSION HbA1c was the crucial determinant contributing to the suppression of BTMs. FSH might play a novel mediation role in BTM suppression due to HbA1c or BMI.

Abstract
Adequate evidence showed hormone therapy (HT) reduces the risk of new-onset diabetes in midlife women by decreasing fasting glucose and insulin. However, the improvement of these diabetic biomarkers varied with each individual in clinical observations. The objective of our study was to investigate potential baseline factors associated with the change of fasting glucose and insulin during HT.A retrospective cohort study was performed among 263 midlife participants aged 40 to 60 years with menopausal symptoms who have received 6-month individualized HT. Demographic information and laboratory indicators including reproductive hormone, lipid profiles, diabetic indicators were collected and measured at baseline and were followed-up. A series of statistical analyses were performed to confirm the effectiveness of HT and compare the baseline factors between participants with different glycemic or insulinemic response. Multivariable linear regression model with stepwise variable selection was further used to identify the associated factor with the change of fasting glucose and insulin.Of all participants, fasting glucose (P = .001) and fasting insulin (P < .001) were significantly decreased after individualized HT. Significant differences in baseline reproductive hormones were observed in participants with different glycemic response to HT (P < .001 for both follicle stimulating hormone [FSH] and estradiol). Stepwise linear regression model showed that in addition to baseline fasting glucose levels, baseline FSH was also independently associated with the change of fasting glucose (β = -0.145, P = .019 for baseline FSH) but not fasting insulin. Greater reduction in fasting glucose in women with higher FSH levels was observed even though they have already been in better metabolic conditions (P = .037).Midlife women with higher baseline FSH levels have greater reduction in fasting glucose but not fasting insulin. FSH could be an independent predictor of glycemic response to HT in peri- and postmenopausal women.

Abstract
BACKGROUND The impact of diabetes on reproductive function is still not clearly defined. This study aimed to evaluate accelerated ovarian aging in women with type 2 diabetes mellitus (T2DM) and its association with adverse lipid profile. METHODS Female patients with T2DM (n=964) and non-T2DM controls (n=263) aging from 18-80 years were included. Levels of circulating sex hormones were measured at the follicular phase in menstruating women. We analyzed the age-specific trends in the levels of sex hormones between T2DM and controls. The correlations of sex hormones with the lipid profile, including low-density lipoprotein cholesterol (LDL-C), high-density lipoprotein cholesterol (HDL-C), total cholesterol (TC) and triglycerides (TG) were also evaluated. RESULTS In the temporal trends analysis, LH and FSH both started to increase obviously approximately from the age of 45 years among patients with T2DM, and displayed peaks of LH and FSH among patients with T2DM aged between 61 and 65, both of which were obviously earlier than that in non-T2DM controls and proved the accelerated ovarian aging among patients with T2DM. E2 of patients with T2DM was continuous lower than that of non-T2DM controls from approximately 45 years old, and LH and FSH of patients with T2DM were higher than those of non-T2DM controls between the age of 55 to 65 years. Multiple linear regression analyses revealed that LH was positively correlated with LDL-C (Coefficient=0.156, P=0.001) and TC (Coefficient=0.134, P=0.025), and was negatively correlated with HDL-C (Coefficient =-0.065, P=0.001) in patients with T2DM aged between 51 and 60, which was independent of age, T2DM duration, body mass index (BMI), glycosylated hemoglobin (HbA1c), FSH, E2 and other potential confounders. Higher E2 level was significantly and independently correlated with lower LDL-C (Coefficient= -0.064, P=0.033) in patients with T2DM aged between 51 and 60. CONCLUSIONS This study suggests that patients with T2DM have accelerated ovarian aging, and it is correlated with the occurrence of disturbed lipid profile in patients with T2DM. With an ever increasing number of female patients with T2DM diagnosed at younger ages, the accelerated ovarian aging and its adverse impacts in T2DM need to be carefully managed.

Abstract
OBJECTIVE Gestational diabetes mellitus (GDM) is associated with adverse maternal and fetal outcomes. This study aimed to identify early and reliable GDM predictors that would enable implementation of preventive and management measures. METHODS The participants were a 28-week prospective cohort of in vitro fertilization (IVF)-conceived pregnant women (≤39 years, body mass index [BMI] 18.5-38 kg/m2) without a known history of diabetes mellitus. Fasting blood samples were analyzed at baseline (pre-IVF) and 12 weeks' gestation for reproductive hormones, glucose, serum insulin, lipids, thyroid function, adiponectin, and lipopolysaccharide-binding protein. At 28 weeks, a 75-g oral glucose tolerance test was used to screen for GDM. RESULTS For the overall group at baseline, 22% had BMI ≥30 kg/m2, 45% had polycystic ovary syndrome, 16% had hemoglobin A1C of 5.7% to 6.1%, and 14% had a past history of GDM. At 28 weeks of gestation (n = 158), 34 women had developed GDM and 124 had not. Significant baseline predictors of GDM onset included greater BMI (29.0 vs 25.8 kg/m2), older age (34 vs 32 years), higher levels of follicle-stimulating hormone/luteinizing hormone ratio (1.2 vs 1.0), hemoglobin A1C (5.5 vs 5.2%), insulin (10.6 vs 7.1 μIU/mL), homeostatic model assessment of insulin resistance (2.2 vs 1.7), total cholesterol (199 vs 171 mg/dL), and low-density lipoprotein cholesterol (123 vs 105 mg/dL), and lower triglyceride levels (74 vs 76 mg/dL). Significant 12-week GDM predictors included greater maternal weight gain (delta: 3.4 vs 1.5 kg) and higher levels of insulin (11.3 vs 7.6 μIU/mL), triglycerides (178 vs 120 mg/dL), and homeostatic model assessment of insulin resistance (2.3 vs 1.5). Twelve-week BMI is a predictor of GDM following adjustment for polycystic ovary syndrome status and maternal age. CONCLUSION While preconception maternal BMI, age, and follicle-stimulating hormone/luteinizing hormone ratio are predictors of subsequent development of GDM, early IVF-conceived gestational weight gain is the best predictor of GDM onset.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Associations between sex hormones and diabetic vascular complications have recently been studied, but the role luteinizing hormone (LH) plays in diabetic kidney disease (DKD) remains uncertain. We aimed to investigate the relationship of LH and DKD in Chinese men and postmenopausal women with type 2 diabetes mellitus (T2DM). METHODS Data were collected from 1775 T2DM men and postmenopausal women in hospital. The odds ratios (OR) and corresponding 95% confidence intervals (CI) in relation to LH quartiles were obtained by multiple logistic regression analysis. RESULTS LH levels were significantly higher in patients with macroalbuminuria than in those with microalbuminuria, but were not higher in patients with microalbuminuria than in those with normoalbuminuria. Consistently, LH in those with an estimated glomerular filtration rate (eGFR) < 60 mL/min/1.73m2 were significantly higher than in those with eGFR≥60 mL/min/1.73m2 . The prevalence of macroalbuminuria was obviously increased for subjects of the fourth quartile of LH vs the first to third quartile (20.4% vs 6.2%, 8.0%, 12.2% in men; 25.3% vs 5.5%, 3.8%, 9.3% in postmenopausal women). Multivariate logistic regression demonstrated that subjects within the highest quartile of LH had higher odds of macroalbuminuria than those within the lowest quartile (OR 4.00, 95% CI, 1.87-8.55 for men; OR 9.62, 95% CI, 3.42-27.08 for postmenopausal women), independent of age, diabetes duration, or other metabolic factors. The area under the curve for detecting macroalbuminuria based on LH was 0.662 for men, and 0.767 for postmenopausal women. CONCLUSION High LH levels are positively associated with established DKD among Chinese men and postmenopausal women. Elevated LH may be a promising clinical factor for identifying established DKD.

Abstract
Beyond fertility, follicle-stimulating hormone (FSH) may exert action on adipocytes, which are the major source of adiponectin and leptin, linking to insulin resistance. Therefore, we evaluated the relationships between FSH and adipocyte-derived hormones. This cross-sectional study enrolled postmenopausal women aged 40–65 years. The variables measured in this study included clinical parameters, fasting levels of sex hormones, glucose, insulin, and adipokines. A total of 261 women without breast cancer, 88 women with breast cancer receiving tamoxifen, and 59 women with breast cancer receiving additional gonadotropin-releasing hormone analogs were enrolled in this study. Significant differences in the levels of adiponectin, leptin, and FSH were observed between the non-breast cancer group and the breast cancer groups. Spearman’s rank test revealed significant associations of FSH with either body mass index (BMI) or homeostatic model assessment of insulin resistance (HOMA-IR) values in the non-breast cancer group. After adjusting for BMI, age, and menopause duration, FSH levels were significantly associated with adiponectin (p < 0.001) and the leptin-to-adiponectin ratio (p = 0.008) in the non-breast cancer group, but they were only significantly associated with adiponectin (p = 0.001) in the breast cancer group receiving tamoxifen. Our data show that FSH levels are independently associated with adiponectin levels in postmenopausal women, suggesting that adiponectin may link FSH to metabolic relationships in postmenopausal female.

Abstract
Protein 4.1N, a member of the protein 4.1 family, is highly expressed in the brain. But its function remains to be fully defined. Using 4.1N−/− mice, we explored the function of 4.1N in vivo. We show that 4.1N−/− mice were born at a significantly reduced Mendelian ratio and exhibited high mortality between 3 to 5 weeks of age. Live 4.1N−/− mice were smaller than 4.1N+/+ mice. Notably, while there were no significant differences in organ/body weight ratio for most of the organs, the testis/body and ovary/body ratio were dramatically decreased in 4.1N−/− mice, demonstrating selective effects of 4.1N deficiency on the development of the reproductive systems. Histopathology of the reproductive organs showed atrophy of both testis and ovary. Specifically, in the testis there is a lack of spermatogenesis, lack of leydig cells and lack of mature sperm. Similarly, in the ovary there is a lack of follicular development and lack of corpora lutea formation, as well as lack of secretory changes in the endometrium. Examination of pituitary glands revealed that the secretory granules were significantly decreased in pituitary glands of 4.1N−/− compared to 4.1N+/+. Moreover, while GnRH was expressed in both neuronal cell body and axons in the hypothalamus of 4.1N+/+ mice, it was only expressed in the cell body but not the axons of 4.1N-/- mice. Our findings uncover a novel role for 4.1N in the axis of hypothalamus-pituitary gland-reproductive system.

Abstract
OBJECTIVE Little is known about how menopausal hormone treatment (HT) may influence the development of white matter hyperintensities (WMHs) in the brain. This study evaluated the associations of changes in levels of pituitary-ovarian hormones during HT and changes in WMH. METHODS Women (n = 78 adherent to treatment) enrolled in the Kronos Early Estrogen Prevention Study underwent brain magnetic resonance imaging, and blood collection before and after 48 months of randomization to 0.45 mg/d oral conjugated equine estrogen (oCEE) daily, 50 μg/d transdermal 17β estradiol (tE2), or placebo pills and patches. Women in the active treatment groups also received oral 200 mg/d micronized progesterone the first 12 days of the month. Estradiol (E2), estrone (E1), follicle-stimulating hormone (FSH), and luteinizing hormone (LH) were measured in serum by high sensitivity liquid chromatography/mass spectrometry at baseline and following 48 months of HT. Longitudinal change in WMH volume was determined from fluid-attenuated inversion recovery magnetic resonance imaging using a semiautomated image segmentation algorithm. RESULTS Serum levels of FSH, LH, E1, or E2 did not associate with WMH volume at baseline. After 48 months of treatment, smaller increases in WMH associated with decreases in FSH from baseline in the tE2 group and increases in E1 in both tE2 and oCEE groups. Changes in LH did not associate with changes in WMH in any group. CONCLUSIONS Circulating levels of pituitary-ovarian hormones associate with changes in WMH volume in recently menopausal women using HT. Abstract
AIM Accumulative evidence shows that follicle stimulating hormone (FSH) is associated with metabolic disorders. We aimed to ascertain the relationship between FSH, blood glucose and lipid metabolism in general perimenopausal women. METHODS This cross-sectional study analyzed 2121 perimenopausal women aged 40-54 years in Zhejiang Province from January 2016 to December 2018. Regression analysis was performed to assess the relationship between FSH and metabolic parameters. RESULTS Serum FSH had a significant inverse association with fasting plasma glucose (P < 0.05) and triglycerides (TG) (P < 0.01) in perimenopausal women. However, after adjusting for body mass index, there was no significant association between FSH and fasting plasma glucose. In a model fully adjusted for demographic variables, estradiol, body mass index, high-density lipoprotein, low-density lipoprotein, homocysteine, systolic blood pressure and blood viscosity, a significant association still existed between FSH and TG (standardized β = -0.095; R2 = 0.155; P = 0.002). CONCLUSION Overall, FSH is negatively associated with metabolic parameters, especially TG, in perimenopausal women. These results indicated that FSH might be a biomarker for the primary prevention of disorders with lipid metabolism during the menopausal period.

Abstract
Follicle stimulating hormone (FSH) and its receptor (FSHR) play an important role in human metabolic diseases and cancer. Evidence showed that FSHR is not only distributed in ovary and testis but also in other cells or organs such as osteoclast, adipocytes, liver, pituitary cancer and so forth. Moreover, FSH is associated with lipogenesis, inflammation, insulin sensitivity, thermogenesis, skeletal metabolism, osteogenesis and ovarian cancer, all of which have been confirmed closely related to metabolic diseases or metabolic-related cancer. Therefore, FSH and FSHR may be potential therapeutic targets for metabolic diseases and metabolic-related cancer. Epidemiological researches revealed close relationship between FSH/FSHR and metabolic diseases or cancer. Experimental studies elucidated the underlying mechanism both in vivo and in vitro. We reviewed the recent researches and present an integrated framework of FSH/FSHR and metabolic diseases and cancer, which provides potential targets for the treatments of metabolic diseases and cancer.

Abstract
BACKGROUND While sex hormones are essential for normal cognitive health, those individuals with greater endocrine dyscrasia around menopause and with andropause are more likely to develop cognitive loss and Alzheimer's disease (AD). OBJECTIVE To assess whether circulating sex hormones may provide an etiologically significant, surrogate biomarker, for cognitive decline. METHODS Plasma (n = 152) and serum (n = 107) samples from age- and gender-matched AD and control subjects from the Wisconsin Alzheimer's Disease Research Center (ADRC) were analyzed for 11 steroids and follicle-stimulating hormone. Logistic regression (LR), correlation analyses, and recursive partitioning (RP) were used to examine the interactions of hormones and hormone ratios and their association with AD. Models generated were then tested on an additional 43 ADRC samples. RESULTS The wide variation and substantial overlap in the concentrations of all circulating sex steroids across control and AD groups precluded their use for predicting AD. Classification tree analyses (RP) revealed interactions among single hormones and hormone ratios that associated with AD status, the most predictive including only the hormone ratios identified by LR. The strongest associations were observed between cortisol, cortisone, and androstenedione with AD, with contributions from progesterone and 17β-estradiol. Utilizing this model, we correctly predicted 81% of AD test cases and 64% of control test cases. CONCLUSION We have developed a diagnostic model for AD, the Wisconsin Hormone Algorithm Test for Cognition (WHAT-Cog), that utilizes classification tree analyses of hormone ratios. Further refinement of this technology could provide a quick and cheap diagnostic method for screening those with AD.

Abstract
OBJECTIVES In the past decade, China has been characterised by large-scale urbanisation as well as rapid economic growth. The aim of this study was to further investigate the prevalence of hyperuricaemia (HUA) in an Eastern Chinese population. DESIGN Cross-sectional study. SETTING Survey of Prevalence in East China of Metabolic Diseases and Risk Factors China study. PARTICIPANTS In this study, 12 770 residents from 22 sites in Eastern China were recruited. Finally, 9225 subjects were included. MAIN OUTCOME MEASURES The serum levels of uric acid (UA), fasting plasma glucose (FPG), glycated haemoglobin and other metabolic parameters were tested. Waist circumference, weight, height and blood pressure were also measured. Questionnaires regarding smoking, drinking, education were collected from the subjects. HUA was defined as serum UA >420 µmol/L for men and >360 µmol/L for women. RESULTS The prevalence of HUA in this Eastern Chinese population was 11.3% (9.9, 12.7) overall, 20.7% (17.7, 23.7) in men and 5.6% (4.3, 6.7) in women. The prevalence of HUA in urban subjects was higher than that in rural subjects (12.9 vs 10.8%, p<0.01). The prevalence of HUA was negatively and positively associated with age in men and women, respectively. Residents with high body mass index levels had a higher prevalence of HUA. In the logistic regression analysis, male sex, urban residency, total cholesterol, triglyceride, overweight, obesity, systolic blood pressure and low economic status were independently correlated with HUA. CONCLUSIONS The estimated prevalence of HUA in this Eastern Chinese population was 11.3% (9.9, 12.7) overall and 20.7% (17.7, 23.7) and 5.6% (4.3, 6.7) in men and women, respectively. Abstract
Menopause compounds many cardiometabolic risk factors through endogenous estrogen withdrawal. This study aimed to find the association between serum follicle-stimulating hormone (FSH) levels and cardiometabolic risk factors in post-menopausal Korean women. A total of 608 post-menopausal women from eight randomized double-blind, placebo-controlled clinical trials on menopause during the year 2012–2019 were analyzed. Cardiometabolic risk factors such as body mass index, waist circumference, systolic blood pressure, fasting glucose, triglycerides (TG), high density lipoprotein-cholesterol (HDL-C), and TG/HDL-C ratio were significantly improved as the FSH quartiles increased. Metabolic syndrome (MetS) and the number of components of MetS decreased as FSH quartiles increased. In regression analysis, FSH level was negatively associated with cardiometabolic risk factors including body mass index, body weight, waist circumference, fasting glucose and TG, while it was positively associated with HDL-C. The odds ratio of MetS in the first quartile of FSH was 2.682 compared with that in the fourth quartile of FSH in a logistic regression model. Serum FSH levels had a negative correlation with cardiometabolic risk factors in post-menopausal Korean women, suggesting that a low FSH can be a predictor for cardiovascular disease in post-menopausal women.

Abstract
The existence of microcystins (MCs), the secondary metabolite of cyanobacteria, has become a growing public health concern. Previous researches have proved that MCs can trigger endoplasmic reticulum stress (ERS), but the underlying mechanisms remain unclear. In the present study, adult female zebrafish were exposed to MC-LR (0, 1, 5 and 20 μg/L) for 30 d, and the offspring derived from the treated females and healthy males were cultured in water without MC-LR until 96 h post fertilization (hpf). Our data suggested that MC-LR causes a significant increase in the eif2s1a, atf4, and eif2ak3 transcription levels in the liver and ovary. The mRNA levels of atf4, atf6, bcl-2, hspa5, eif2s1a and eif2ak3 upregulated notably in the offspring. JNK phosphorylation level and cleaved-caspase3 protein expression elevated obviously in the liver and ovary, but had no remarkable change in the offspring. Furthermore, TUNEL results showed that MC-LR significantly induced apoptosis in the liver and ovary, while acridine orange (AO) staining indicated that MC-LR did not cause abnormal apoptosis in offspring. Concisely, the present study indicated that MC-LR leads to apoptosis through different ERS pathways in the liver, ovary and offspring, and also provides a new perspective for understanding the apoptosis caused by MC-LR.

Abstract
OBJECTIVE Menopause is associated with the increased risk of metabolic syndrome (MetS) and cardiovascular (CV) disease. Most studies have focused the postmenopausal women and the relationships among estrogen, androgen, and Mets risk. The main aim of the study was to investigate the Mets risk in perimenopausal women and whether the variation of FSH is associated with metabolic factors. METHODS A single-center cross-sectional retrospective analysis including 154 premenopausal women and 124 perimenopausal women was performed. RESULTS The prevalence of Mets in the perimenopausal group was much higher than the premenopausal group (49.19% vs. 35.71%, p = 0.023). The prevalence of central obesity and NAFLD also increased in the perimenopausal group than in the premenopausal group. We grouped the population by FSH tertiles; compared with women in the lowest tertile, women in the highest tertile had higher age, WC, serum TC, LDL-C, AST, ALT, and creatine levels. The prevalence of hypertriglyceridemia, raised BP and Mets also increased in the highest tertile group. Further, we subdivided the perimenopausal women according to FSH tertiles. Compared with perimenopausal women in the lowest tertile, the prevalence of raised BP significantly increased in the highest tertile. CONCLUSIONS The risk of Mets increased in perimenopausal females than in premenopausal women. And a higher FSH level was associated with higher WC, TG, BPs, and the risk of Mets in perimenopausal women. Elevated FSH level appears to be a risk factor of MetS biomarkers in perimenopausal women.

Abstract
Changes in pituitary-ovarian hormones across the menopausal transition have multiple physiological consequences. However, little is known about how the major types of postmenopausal hormone therapy (HT) affect pituitary-ovarian hormonal relationships. This study evaluated these relationships in recently menopausal women (52.45 ± 2.49 yr of age) in the Kronos Early Estrogen Prevention Study (KEEPS) who were compliant to randomized, double-blinded treatment with oral conjugated equine estrogen (o-CEE; n = 109), transdermal 17β-estradiol (t-E2; n = 107), or placebo (n = 146). Androstenedione, testosterone, 17β-estradiol, estrone, follicle-stimulating hormone (FSH), and luteinizing hormone (LH) were measured in serum before (baseline) and 48 mo after randomization to treatment. Descriptive summaries of hormone levels were performed, and multiple regression analyses were used to examine the effects of o-CEE, t-E2, and placebo on these hormone levels at 48 mo, adjusting for baseline levels. A network analysis examined the covariance of changes in hormone levels over the 48 mo within treatment groups. As expected, at 48 mo of treatment, hormone levels differed between women in the two active treatment groups compared with placebo, and network analysis indicated stronger relationships among hormone levels in the t-E2 and o-CEE groups compared with placebo. Associations among testosterone, 17β-estradiol, FSH, and LH differed between the o-CEE group compared with t-E2 and placebo groups. Thus, two common HT regimens differentially alter pituitary-ovarian hormone levels, altering feedback cycles and interhormonal associations in recently menopausal women. These interactions provide the basis for future studies investigating the impact of hormonal modulation of aging, including cognitive decline in women.

Abstract
The change in follicle-stimulating hormone (FSH) during the menopausal transition and associations of FSH with various diseases have been assessed by using blood samples. We examined cross-sectionally the variation of FSH levels, associations of estrone and estradiol with FSH, and associations of BMI with these hormones by using urinary samples from peri- and postmenopausal women in Japan. Of 4472 participants in the Urinary Isoflavone Concentration Survey of the Japan Nurses' Health Study, we analyzed urinary levels of estrone, estradiol and FSH in 547 women aged from 45 to 54 years. Urinary FSH levels varied widely in postmenopausal women and the pattern of change in urinary FSH levels seems to be similar to that in blood FSH levels in previous studies. There were no significant differences in age, body mass index (BMI), estradiol, estrone and estradiol/estrone ratio among three groups according to the tertile of FSH. In postmenopausal women, there were significant associations of BMI with levels of estrone and estradiol, but there was no significant association of BMI with FSH. Studies using urinary samples will allow us to establish a study project as a large-scale population-based study to determine associations between FSH and various diseases after menopause. J. Med. Abstract
Recent studies have suggested that a low concentration of follicle-stimulating hormone (FSH) is associated with a higher prevalence of metabolic disturbances in postmenopausal women. In this study, we aim to evaluate the association between FSH, luteinizing hormone (LH), and LH/FSH ratio values and the risk of insulin resistance (HOMA-IR >2.0), prediabetes (IFG), and type 2 diabetes in a 5-year prospective study in postmenopausal women. 114 postmenopausal women were divided into 4 groups: group 1 (baseline and follow-up normoglycemic women), group 2 (normoglycemic women at baseline progressing to IFG), group 3 (women with baseline and follow-up IFG), and group 4 (women with baseline IFG progressing to diabetes). Baseline and follow-up anthropometric measurements and blood collections were performed. Serum/plasma was assayed for glucose, HDL-C, TG, C-reactive protein (CRP), 17beta-estradiol, estrone, insulin, thyroid-stimulating hormone (TSH), FSH, and LH. Homeostatic model assessment of insulin resistance (HOMA-IR) and LH/FSH ratios were calculated. The baseline concentrations of FSH and LH statistically decreased across all four groups (the highest concentrations in group 1 and the lowest in group 4; p < 0.001). A logistic regression analysis showed that a 1 SD decrease in the z-score of FSH concentration is associated with a threefold increased risk of IFG and a fivefold increased risk of HOMA-IR of >2.0 and diabetes. The LH concentration had odds ratio (OR) values about two times lower than the FSH concentration. The ORs of the LH/FSH ratio were only significant for IFG. In conclusion, FSH concentration is strongly associated with insulin resistance, prediabetes, and diabetes in postmenopausal women with normal or impaired fasting glucose. LH and the LH/FSH ratio are also related to metabolic disturbances after menopause, yet to a lesser extent.

Abstract
Accumulating evidence supports a link between depression and being overweight in women. Given previously reported sex differences in fat accumulation and depression prevalence, as well as the likely role of sex hormones in both overweight and mood disorders, we hypothesised that the depression-overweight association may be mediated by sex hormones. To this end, we investigated the association of being overweight with depression, and then considered the role of sex hormones in relation to being overweight and depression in a large population-based cohort. We included a total of 3124 women, 970 premenopausal and 2154 postmenopausal from the LIFE-Adult cohort study in our analyses. We evaluated associations between being overweight (BMI >25 kg/m2), sex hormone levels, and depressive symptomatology according to Centre for Epidemiologic Studies Depression (CES-D) scores, and explored mediation of depression in a mediation model. Being overweight was significantly associated with depressive symptoms in premenopausal but not postmenopausal women. Both premenopausal and postmenopausal overweight women had higher free testosterone levels compared with normal weight women. Premenopausal women with depressive symptomatology had higher free testosterone levels compared to women without. We found a significant mediation effect of depressive symptomatology in overweight premenopausal women through free testosterone level. These findings highlight the association between being overweight and depressed, and suggest that high free testosterone levels may play a significant role in depression of overweight premenopausal women. Based on this, pharmacological approaches targeting androgen levels in overweight depressed females, in particular when standard anti-depressive treatments fail, could be of specific clinical relevance.

Abstract
AIM The aim of this study was to investigate the effectiveness of using recombinant human follicle-stimulating hormone (FSH) compared with pituitary-derived porcine FSH given as one dose or multiple doses on the neonatal traits, follicular dynamics, and maternal blood biochemical constituents in Noemi ewes. MATERIALS AND METHODS A 3×2 factorial arrangement was designed utilizing 60 adults Noemi ewes to test the effects of using two sources of FSH (human vs. porcine) in addition to control, either given as a single total dose or six descending doses to provoke twinning. Six treatments (T) were tested (n=10 ewes/T). C1 and C6 served as control ewes given saline as one dose and six doses, respectively; H1 and H6 ewes were given human FSH as one and six doses; and P1 and P6 ewes were given porcine FSH similar to the above treatments. Saline and/or FSH administration were administered at days 8, 9, and 10 of the 10-day controlled internal drug release (CIDR) implant. At CIDR removal, fertile rams were used for natural mating. Blood samples for the assessment of serum metabolites were collected. RESULTS Twinning increased in FSH-treated ewes than control. However, giving FSH of either source as a single dose resulted in a higher incidence of stillbirths. Pregnancy rates were 30, 40, 50, 60, 70, and 80% in C1, C6, P1, P6, H1, and H6, respectively. Respective percent of ewes delivering twins/multiple birth was 0, 0, 80, 66.7, 71.4, and 87.5%. FSH of human source was more efficient for folliculogenesis than porcine FSH. Administration of FSH increased blood cholesterol, decreased high-density lipoprotein; however, low-density lipoprotein levels were not different than control. Moreover, an interaction (p<0.05) exists between source and type of FSH administration on blood glucose. Six doses of FSH elevated blood protein. Blood albumin decreased by porcine-FSH but not affected by human-FSH. Blood globulins were not different due to source of FSH, whereas giving FSH as six doses increased globulins than in single-dose protocol. Contrariwise, an interaction was found between source and type of FSH administration on elevating the activity of alanine aminotransferase and reducing the activity of aspartate aminotransferase. CONCLUSION Administration of human FSH at 180 IU in six descending doses resulted in the best neonatal outcomes and maternal health in Noemi ewes.

Abstract
Cirrhosis is associated with hormonal dysregulation, as evidenced by secondary amenorrhoea in reproductive-aged women, and feminization of cirrhotic men. Whether hormone levels vary by severity of cirrhosis in women is not known. If identified, such changes may have important clinical relevance, particularly, as low sex hormone binding globulin (SHBG) and follicle stimulating hormone (FSH) are known to promote metabolic and cardiovascular disease in women. In a cohort of post-menopausal women with chronic hepatitis C virus (HCV) infection, we compared comprehensive sex hormone levels by presence of cirrhosis, as well as across Child-Turcotte-Pugh (CTP) class. Results: There were n = 18 cirrhotic and n = 21 noncirrhotic women with a median age of 57 years (interquartile range [IQR] 53-62). Compared to noncirrhotics, cirrhotic women had higher oestradiol (11.0 vs 6.0 pg/mL, P = 0.05) and oestrone levels (32.0 vs 8.0 ng/mL, P < 0.001), and lower sex hormone binding globulin (SHBG) (69.2 vs 155.6 nmol/L, P = 0.001), and FSH levels (4.9 vs 89.6 mIU/mL, P < 0.001). Among cirrhotic women, there was a progressive decline in FSH and SHBG and concurrent rise in oestrone levels from CTP class A to C (test of trend, P values ≤0.02). Cirrhosis is associated with lower FSH and SHBG levels in cirrhotic compared to noncirrhotic women with HCV infection. In cirrhotic women, these levels demonstrate steady decline by disease severity. Given known associations of low SHBG and FSH with cardio-metabolic disease, the clinical implications of hormonal changes by cirrhosis severity in HCV-infected women warrants investigation.

Abstract
Pyrethroids, a class of ubiquitous insecticides, have been recognized as endocrine-disrupting chemicals (EDCs). A lot of studies have implied the endocrine-disrupting effects of pyrethroids on the hypothalamic-pituitary-gonadal (HPG) axis. However, there are few review articles regarding the effects of pyrethroids on the HPG axis of mammal and human, especially new research progress made in this area. The present review sums up the effects of pyrethroids on the HPG axis-related reproductive outcomes, including epidemiological investigations based on human biomonitoring, animal studies and in vitro tests. Mechanisms have described that the endocrine-disrupting effects of pyrethroids on mammal can be mediated via the interaction with steroid receptors, the direct action on ion channels and signaling molecules. Finally, we summarize the current research gaps and suggest future directions in this topic.

Abstract
Current studies have focused more on the relationships among estrogen, androgen, and metabolic syndrome (MetS). The main aim of the study was to investigate whether the variation of FSH is associated with metabolic factors in postmenopausal women. A total of 561 postmenopausal women aged 39-69 years were selected. FSH, estradiol, fasting blood glucose, and lipid profiles were analyzed. Compared with women in the highest FSH quartile, women in the lowest quartile had higher body mass index (BMI), fast blood glucose (FBG), triglyceride (TG), blood pressure, and serum estradiol (E2) but lower high-density lipoprotein (HDL) (all p < .05). Compared with women in the groups of normal levels of MetS biomarkers, women in the abnormal groups had lower FSH (all p < .01). Increased quartiles of FSH were associated with significantly decreased rates of abnormal levels of metabolic factors (all p < .05). High FSH levels had protective effects regarding SBP, DBP, and FBG, with odds ratios (ORs) of 0.84 (95% CI 0.76-0.92, p < .001), 0.85 (95% CI 0.78-0.94, p < .01), 0.90 (95% CI 0.83-0.98, p < .01), respectively. Low FSH appears to be a risk factor of all domains of MetS in postmenopausal women, which merits further study.

Abstract
The menopause transition (MT) is a critical period of women's lives marked by several physiologic changes and menopause-related symptoms that have implications for health. Risk for cardiovascular disease, the leading cause of death in women, increases after menopause, suggesting a contribution of the MT to its development. This article focuses on the relationship between 2 main features of the MT and women's cardiovascular health: (1) dynamic alterations of sex hormones, particularly endogenous estradiol and follicle-stimulating hormone, and (2) vasomotor symptoms, the cardinal symptom of the menopause. Limitations and future directions are discussed.

Abstract
Background The interrelation between thyroid autoimmunity and cardiovascular risks is complex and has not been confirmed. This study aimed at evaluating whether there exists a relationship between thyroid autoimmune diseases (AITDs) and cardiometabolic risks in a large population with normal thyroid-stimulating hormone (TSH) levels. Methods The data was obtained from a cross-sectional study (SPECT-China study). This study enrolled 9082 subjects (3948 males and 5134 females) above 18 years with normal TSH levels. AITD was defined according to the positivity of TPOAb and TgAb as well as thyroid ultrasonography (US) findings. Results After full adjustment, TPOAb and/or TgAb positivity (TPO/TgAb (+)) was significantly associated with higher BMI, waist circumference (WC), and HbA1c only in women (P = 0.004, 0.026 and 0.032, respectively), while both TPO/TgAb positivity and US positivity (TPO/TgAb (+) and US (+)) were positively associated with BMI and WC in both genders (P = 0.002 and 0.020 in men; P < 0.001and <0.001 in women). TPO/TgAb (+) and US (+) were positively associated with HOMA-IR in women (P = 0.021) as well. Binary logistic analysis showed that AITDs had increased risks of central obesity, hyperlipidemia, and metabolic syndrome only in women (all P < 0.05). Moreover, TPO/TgAb (+) and US (+) were associated with an increased risk of obesity for both genders (P = 0.014 in men and P = 0.006 in women). Conclusions Thyroid autoimmunity was positively associated with HbA1c, HOMA-IR, obesity, central obesity, hyperlipidemia, and metabolic syndrome, especially in women. This highlighted that AITDs may be potential risk factors for cardiometabolic disorders even if one's TSH was within the reference range.

Abstract
Gestational diabetes mellitus (GDM) increases many health risks in offspring. The study aims to investigate the underlying mechanism in fetal risk of GDM.We collected maternal peripheral plasma and umbilical venous plasma samples from 4 GDM and 4 control patients during their delivery at a university-based women's hospital. An isobaric tag for relative and absolute quantitation-labeled proteomics analysis was performed. The enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay was used to confirm the change of cholesteryl ester transfer protein (CETP). Bioinformatic analysis was performed with Ingenuity Pathway Analysis (IPA) software package.We identified 19 up-regulated proteins and 15 down-regulated proteins in GDM peripheral plasma, 29 up-regulated proteins and 69 down-regulated proteins in GDM umbilical venous plasma. CETP concentration was significantly lower in both GDM peripheral plasma and umbilical venous plasma. Upstream regulator analysis predicted follicle-stimulating hormone (FSH) as the activated regulator of differentially expressed proteins.The protein profiles in both GDM peripheral plasma and umbilical venous plasma between normal and GDM patients were significantly different. The results indicated that CETP and FSH might associates with health problem of GDM offspring.

Abstract
Menopause is an important transition of reproductive stage in a woman's life. It is associated with diabetes, but the role of follicle stimulating hormone (FSH), a menopause-related hormone, in the risk of diabetes is largely unknown. We evaluated the relationship between serum FSH and diabetes in 1274 participants from the Hong Kong Osteoporosis Study aged≥55 at baseline. We also searched relevant databases for studies on serum FSH and incident diabetes and conducted a meta-analysis using fixed-effect modeling. Cases of incident diabetes (N = 60) were ascertained during a median follow-up of 10.7 years. Serum FSH was significantly associated with reduced risk of diabetes in both a crude model (hazard ratio [HR] per SD increase: 0.66; 95% CI: 0.48-0.89; P = 0.007) and a full model with adjustment for age, sex, body mass index, factors related to risk of diabetes, and reproductive health (HR per SD increase: 0.70; 95% CI: 0.51-0.97; P = 0.030); a similar result was observed when FSH was analysed in quintiles. In a fixed-effect meta-analysis of two studies, including the current study, serum FSH > 50 IU/L was associated with reduced risk of diabetes (HR = 0.56; 95% CI: 0.36-0.85; P = 0.006; I2 = 0). In conclusion, serum FSH levels were independently associated with diabetes.

Abstract
PURPOSE Menopause is frequently associated with an increase in visceral fat, thus modifying redox status by promoting oxidative damage and decreasing antioxidant defense systems. It is known that at higher concentrations estradiol has some antioxidant properties, while its decline in postmenopause is associated with pro-oxidant effects. However, the role of follicle stimulating hormone (FSH) in antioxidant defense in postmenopausal women is still not well elucidated. Therefore, we aimed to evaluate the potential complex association between visceral obesity, FSH and enzymatic antioxidant defense as measured by glutathione peroxidase (GPx) in postmenopausal women. METHODS A total of 150 postmenopausal women (mean age 56.6 ± 4.8 years), among them 50 normal weight and 100 overweight/obese, were included. GPx activity, FSH, luteinizing hormone, estradiol, total testosterone, cardiometabolic and anthropometric parameters, were determined. RESULTS With increasing tertiles of serum FSH levels, significant increase in GPx activity (P = 0.005) was found. Also, the highest number of overweight/obese subjects were in the group with the lowest FSH values (χ 2 = 14.9, P < 0.001). After multiple linear regression analysis, the relationship between GPx and FSH disappeared, whereas only higher waist circumference (β = -0.218, P = 0.045) predicted lower FSH level (adjusted R 2 = 0.227). CONCLUSION Higher GPx activity is associated with higher FSH level, but abdominal obesity may be the underlying determinant of this relationship.

Abstract
OBJECTIVE Previous studies have found that impairment of the circadian clock appears to contribute to the development of nonalcoholic fatty liver disease (NAFLD) and the circulating follicle-stimulating hormone (FSH) level showed a diurnal cycle. A recent study reported that a lower FSH level was associated with NAFLD. However, the effects of the diurnal rhythm of FSH on NAFLD have not been reported. The aim of this study was to evaluate whether the diurnal rhythm of FSH was associated with NAFLD in an elderly population. STUDY DESIGN We performed a cross-sectional study among 71 elderly patients between August 2015 and November 2015 at Fujian Provincial Hospital. Anthropometrics and tests for laboratory were performed for each patient. FSH was determined by radioimmunoassay. The FSH receptor (FSHR) expression was identified in liver and ovary tissue by immunohistochemical staining. NAFLD was diagnosed by sonographic features. RESULTS Of the 71 patients, 33 (42.9%) had NAFLD on their ultrasound. There were no significant differences between subjects with NAFLD and those without NAFLD in terms of age, sex, body mass index, waist-to-hip ratio, fasting plasma glucose, postload plasma glucose, liver enzyme, triglycerides, total cholesterol, high-density lipoprotein-cholesterol and low-density lipoprotein-cholesterol. Both the serum FSH levels of 8AM and 0AM showed no differences between the groups. The proportion of the 'normal' diurnal rhythm of FSH was higher among the patients with NAFLD (78.1% vs. 52.6%, P = .027). After adjusting for all potential confounders, the fully adjusted odds ratios (OR) of diurnal rhythm of FSH for NAFLD was 3.86 (95%CI: 1.01, 14.81, P = .049). Immunohistochemical staining showed that the FSHR protein was detected in human ovarian and hepatic tissues. CONCLUSIONS These results suggest that the 'normal' diurnal rhythm of FSH was independently associated with NAFLD in an elderly population. This study provides a novel insight into the diurnal rhythm of FSH in the pathogenesis of NAFLD.

Abstract
Recent studies of perimenopausal women suggest that follicle-stimulating hormone (FSH) levels may be associated with atherosclerosis, independent of estradiol. Whether FSH is related to atherosclerosis in older postmenopausal women, who have completed the menopausal transition, remains unknown. We assessed the relationship of serum FSH and estradiol levels with carotid artery intima-media thickness (IMT) among 587 postmenopausal participants in the Kuopio Ischemic Heart Disease Risk Factor Study (Kuopio, Finland). Participants were aged 53-73 years and not using hormone therapy at baseline (1998-2001). Mean IMT was measured via high-resolution ultrasonography. We observed a significant inverse association between FSH levels and IMT. Mean IMTs among women in quartiles 1-4 of FSH were 0.94 mm, 0.91 mm, 0.87 mm, and 0.85 mm, respectively (P-trend < 0.001). After adjustment for age, estradiol, testosterone, body mass index (weight (kg)/height (m)2), lipids, and other factors, FSH levels remained significantly associated with IMT (regression coefficients for quartiles 2-4 vs. quartile 1 were -0.038, -0.045, and -0.062, respectively; P-trend = 0.01). Findings were strongest in women aged 64-73 years (P-trend = 0.006) and did not vary by body mass index. In contrast, estradiol levels were not related to IMT. In summary, high postmenopausal FSH levels were associated with a lower atherosclerotic burden, independent of estradiol, adiposity, and other factors. Our findings warrant replication and the further exploration of potential underlying mechanisms.

Abstract
AIMS/HYPOTHESIS In this study, we aimed to examine the association between age at natural menopause and risk of type 2 diabetes, and to assess whether this association is independent of potential mediators. METHODS We included 3639 postmenopausal women from the prospective, population-based Rotterdam Study. Age at natural menopause was self-reported retrospectively and was treated as a continuous variable and in categories (premature, <40 years; early, 40-44 years; normal, 45-55 years; and late menopause, >55 years [reference]). Type 2 diabetes events were diagnosed on the basis of medical records and glucose measurements from Rotterdam Study visits. HRs and 95% CIs were calculated using Cox proportional hazards models, adjusted for confounding factors; in another model, they were additionally adjusted for potential mediators, including obesity, C-reactive protein, glucose and insulin, as well as for levels of total oestradiol and androgens. RESULTS During a median follow-up of 9.2 years, we identified 348 individuals with incident type 2 diabetes. After adjustment for confounders, HRs for type 2 diabetes were 3.7 (95% CI 1.8, 7.5), 2.4 (95% CI 1.3, 4.3) and 1.60 (95% CI 1.0, 2.8) for women with premature, early and normal menopause, respectively, relative to those with late menopause (p trend <0.001). The HR for type 2 diabetes per 1 year older at menopause was 0.96 (95% CI 0.94, 0.98). Further adjustment for BMI, glycaemic traits, metabolic risk factors, C-reactive protein, endogenous sex hormone levels or shared genetic factors did not affect this association. CONCLUSIONS/INTERPRETATION Early onset of natural menopause is an independent marker for type 2 diabetes in postmenopausal women.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Cardiovascular disease is the leading cause of mortality in postmenopausal women. Follicle-stimulating hormone (FSH) shows negative associations with obesity and diabetes mellitus in postmenopausal women. We aimed to study the associations between FSH and 10-year risk of atherosclerotic cardiovascular disease (ASCVD) in postmenopausal women. METHODS AND RESULTS SPECT-China (the Survey on Prevalence in East China for Metabolic Diseases and Risk Factors) is a 22-site, population-based study conducted during 2014-2015. This study included 2658 postmenopausal women. A newly developed effective tool for 10-year ASCVD risk prediction among Chinese was adopted. Regression analyses were performed to assess the relationship among FSH, 10-year ASCVD risk, and multiple cardiometabolic risk factors. With the increase in FSH quartiles, the mean 10-year ASCVD risk in postmenopausal women decreased from 4.9% to 3.3%, and most metabolic parameters were significantly ameliorated (all P for trend <0.05). In regression analyses, a 1-SD increment in ln-FSH was negatively associated with continuous (B -0.12, 95% confidence interval, -0.16, -0.09, P<0.05) and categorical (odds ratio 0.65, 95% confidence interval, 0.49, 0.85, P<0.05) 10-year ASCVD risk. These significant associations existed in subgroups with or without medication use, obesity, diabetes mellitus, hypertension, and dyslipidemia. Body mass index and waist circumference (both B -0.35, 95% confidence interval, -0.40, -0.30, P<0.05) had the largest associations of all metabolic measures, and blood pressure had the smallest association. CONCLUSIONS Serum FSH levels were negatively associated with 10-year ASCVD risk in postmenopausal women. Among cardiometabolic factors, obesity indices had the largest associations with FSH. These results indicated that a low FSH might be a risk factor or a biomarker for cardiovascular disease risk in postmenopausal women.
