Abstract
This comprehensive review explores the intricate relationship between nutrition, the gut microbiome, steroid hormones, and Parkinson's disease within the context of the gut-brain axis. The gut-brain axis plays a pivotal role in neurodegenerative diseases like Parkinson's disease, encompassing diverse components such as the gut microbiota, immune system, metabolism, and neural pathways. The gut microbiome, profoundly influenced by dietary factors, emerges as a key player. Nutrition during the first 1000 days of life shapes the gut microbiota composition, influencing immune responses and impacting both child development and adult health. High-fat, high-sugar diets can disrupt this delicate balance, contributing to inflammation and immune dysfunction. Exploring nutritional strategies, the Mediterranean diet's anti-inflammatory and antioxidant properties show promise in reducing Parkinson's disease risk. Microbiome-targeted dietary approaches and the ketogenic diet hold the potential in improving brain disorders. Beyond nutrition, emerging research uncovers potential interactions between steroid hormones, nutrition, and Parkinson's disease. Progesterone, with its anti-inflammatory properties and presence in the nervous system, offers a novel option for Parkinson's disease therapy. Its ability to enhance neuroprotection within the enteric nervous system presents exciting prospects. The review addresses the hypothesis that α-synuclein aggregates originate from the gut and may enter the brain via the vagus nerve. Gastrointestinal symptoms preceding motor symptoms support this hypothesis. Dysfunctional gut-brain signaling during gut dysbiosis contributes to inflammation and neurotransmitter imbalances, emphasizing the potential of microbiota-based interventions. In summary, this review uncovers the complex web of interactions between nutrition, the gut microbiome, steroid hormones, and Parkinson's disease within the gut-brain axis framework. Understanding these connections not only offers novel therapeutic insights but also illuminates the origins of neurodegenerative diseases such as Parkinson's disease.

Abstract
Immunotherapies currently used in clinical practice are unsatisfactory in terms of therapeutic response and toxic side effects, and therefore new immunotherapies need to be explored. Intratumoral microbiota (ITM) exists in the tumor environment (TME) and reacts with its components. On the one hand, ITM promotes antigen delivery to tumor cells or provides cross-antigens to promote immune cells to attack tumors. On the other hand, ITM affects the activity of immune cells and stromal cells. We also summarize the dialog pathways by which ITM crosstalks with components within the TME, particularly the interferon pathway. This interaction between ITM and TME provides new ideas for tumor immunotherapy. By analyzing the bidirectional role of ITM in TME and combining it with its experimental and clinical status, we summarized the adjuvant role of ITM in immunotherapy. We explored the potential applications of using ITM as tumor immunotherapy, such as a healthy diet, fecal transplantation, targeted ITM, antibiotics, and probiotics, to provide a new perspective on the use of ITM in tumor immunotherapy.

Abstract
PURPOSE OF REVIEW This review provides the latest insight into the impact of consuming plant-based protein for older people. RECENT FINDINGS According to the latest data, a healthy diet rich in plant-based-protein-rich-food could promote healthy aging. This health effect is partly because of the amino acid composition of proteins, as well as to the important constituents such as fiber and bioactive compounds found in the matrix. Furthermore, even though animal protein is more effective at stimulating muscle protein synthesis, a high consumption of plant protein (beyond 31 g/day) appears to enhance physical performance and reduce the risk of frailty in older individuals. SUMMARY Recent literature highlights numerous health benefits for older people associated with a substantial intake of plant-based vs. animal-based protein, both in preventing and mitigating chronic age-related diseases and reducing the risk of all-cause mortality. However, a high intake of plant-based protein-rich products could pose risks of malnutrition and fiber-related intestinal intolerances. Further research is needed to assess the risk-benefit ratio of a high consumption of plant proteins in older individuals before we can make robust recommendations on how far animal proteins can be healthfully replaced with plant proteins.

Abstract
OBJECTIVE This study evaluated the effect of the systemic immune-inflammation index/albumin ratio (SII/ALB) on the prognosis of immunotherapy-treated patients receiving opioids. METHODS A retrospective analysis was conducted of 185 immunotherapy-treated patients who received opioids at Xuzhou Central Hospital from 01/09/2021 to 01/09/2023. The results of related clinical data were collected during the week before the cancer patients received immunotherapy. The SII/ALB cut-off value was determined, and the relationship between the SII/ALB and clinical pathological parameters was analyzed using the chi-square test. The effect of the SII/ALB on progression-free survival (PFS) was examined using Kaplan-Meier curves and the Cox proportional hazard model. RESULT The SII/ALB cut-off value was 20.86, and patients were divided into low (SII/ALB ≤ 20.86) and high (SII/ALB > 20.86) SII/ALB groups. Adverse reactions (hazard ratio [HR] = 0.108; 95% confidence interval [CI]: 0.061-0.192, P < 0.001) and the SII/ALB (HR = 0.093; 95% CI: 0.057-0.151, P < 0.001) were independent prognostic factors for PFS. Compared with the high SII/ALB group, the low SII/ALB group had longer PFS after opioid treatment (12.2 vs. 5.2 months, P < 0.001). CONCLUSION The SII/ALB is a potentially important prognostic parameter in immunotherapy-treated patients receiving opioids.

Abstract
Sarcopenia is an aging-related skeletal disease characterized by decreased muscle mass, strength, and physical function, severely affecting the quality of life (QoL) of the elderly population. Sirtuin 1 (SIRT1), as a nicotinamide adenine dinucleotide (NAD+)-dependent histone deacetylases, has been reported to participate in various aging-related signaling pathways and exert protective effect on many human diseases. SIRT1 functioned as an important role in the occurrence and progression of sarcopenia through regulating key pathways related to protein homeostasis, apoptosis, mitochondrial dysfunction, insulin resistance and autophagy in skeletal muscle, including SIRT1/Forkhead Box O (FoxO), AMP-activated protein kinase (AMPK)/SIRT1/nuclear factor κB (NF-κB), SIRT1/p53, AMPK/SIRT1/peroxisome proliferator-activated receptor gamma coactivator-1α (PGC-1α), and SIRT1/live kinase B1 (LKB1)/AMPK pathways. However, the specific mechanisms of these processes have not been fully illuminated. Currently, several SIRT1-mediated interventions on sarcopenia have been preliminarily developed, such as SIRT1 activator polyphenolic compounds, exercising and calorie restriction. In this review, we summarized the predominant mechanisms of SIRT1 involved in sarcopenia and therapeutic modalities targeting the SIRT1 signaling pathways for the prevention and prognosis of sarcopenia.

Abstract
The rise in life expectancy has significantly increased the occurrence of age-related chronic diseases, leading to escalating expenses for both society and individuals. Among the main factors influencing health and lifespan, lifestyle takes a forefront position. Specifically, nutrition, mental activity, and physical exercise influence the molecular and functional mechanisms that contribute to the prevention of major age-related diseases. Gaining deeper insights into the mechanisms that drive the positive effects of healthy lifestyles is valuable for creating interventions to prevent or postpone the development of chronic degenerative diseases. This review summarizes the main mechanisms that underlie the positive effect of lifestyle factors in counteracting the major age-related diseases involving brain health, musculoskeletal function, cancer, frailty, and cardiovascular diseases, among others. This knowledge will help to identify high-risk populations for targeted intervention trials and discover new biomarkers associated with healthy aging.

Abstract
Many lifestyle-related diseases such as cancer, dementia, myocardial infarction, and stroke are known to be caused by aging, and the WHO's ICD-11 (International Classification of Diseases, 11th edition) created the code "aging-related" in 2022. In other words, aging is irreversible but aging-related diseases are reversible, so taking measures to treat them is important for health longevity and preventing other diseases. Therefore, in this study, we used BioBran containing rice kefiran as an approach to improve aging. Rice kefiran has been reported to improve the intestinal microflora, regulate the intestines, and have anti-aging effects. BioBran has also been reported to have antioxidant effects and improve liver function, and human studies have shown that it affects the diversity of the intestinal microbiota. Quantitative measures of aging that correlate with disease risk are now available through the epigenetic clock test, which examines the entire gene sequence and determines biological age based on the methylation level. Horvath's Clock is the best known of many epigenetic clock tests and was published by Steve Horvath in 2013. In this study, we examine the effect of using Horvath's Clock to improve aging and report on the results, which show a certain effect.

Abstract
Translational research has documented the conjoint beneficial relationships between dietary and physical activity habits concerning weight maintenance. However, the precise interplay between diet and exercise impacting body composition remains unclear, challenging personalized interventions. This study aimed to explore potential interactions and effect modifications of these factors affecting the body mass index (BMI) within an online adult cohort. Data from 11,883 NUTRiMDEA cohort participants were analyzed in this cross-sectional study, categorizing individuals by age, sex, and BMI using linear regression models to assess the interactions between lifestyle factors and adiposity. Significant differences emerged in anthropometry, lifestyle, and health-related quality of life (HRQoL) across categories. The combined effect of diet and physical activity had a greater impact on BMI than physical activity or Mediterranean diet adherence alone, with lower BMI as physical activity levels increased (β: -0.5) and adherence to the Mediterranean diet decreased, where a modification effect between them was identified (β: -0.28). Participants with lower Mediterranean diet adherence displayed superior BMI when physical activity was low, but when activity levels were higher, their BMI aligned with those with healthier dietary habits. An interaction link between lifestyle factors and BMI was found, showing the differential effects of the Mediterranean diet and physical activity combination concerning adiposity.

Dietary diversity score and the acceleration of biological aging: a population-based study of 88,039 participants. J Nutr Health Aging 2024; 28:100271. Abstract
OBJECTIVES Our study aimed to investigate the association of dietary diversity score (DDS), as reflected by five dietary categories, with biological age acceleration. DESIGN A cross-sectional study. SETTING AND PARTICIPANTS This study included 88,039 individuals from the UK Biobank. METHODS Biological age (BA) was assessed using Klemerae-Doubal (KDM) and PhenoAge methods. The difference between BA and chronological age represents the age acceleration (AgeAccel), termed as "KDMAccel" and "PhenoAgeAccel". AgeAccel > 0 indicates faster aging. Generalized linear regression models were performed to assess the associations of DDS with AgeAccel. Similar analyses were performed for the five dietary categories. RESULTS After adjusting for multiple variables, DDS was inversely associated with KDMAccel (βHigh vs Low= -0.403, 95%CI: -0.492 to -0.314, P < 0.001) and PhenoAgeAccel (βHigh vs Low= -0.545, 95%CI: -0.641 to -0.450, P < 0.001). Each 1-point increment in the DDS was associated with a 4.4% lower risk of KDMAccel and a 5.6% lower risk of PhenoAgeAccel. The restricted cubic spline plots demonstrated a non-linear dose-response association between DDS and the risk of AgeAccel. The consumption of grains (βKDMAccel = -0.252, βPhenoAgeAccel = -0.197), vegetables (βKDMAccel = -0.044, βPhenoAgeAccel = -0.077) and fruits (βKDMAccel = -0.179, βPhenoAgeAccel = -0.219) was inversely associated with the two AgeAccel, while meat and protein alternatives (βKDMAccel = 0.091, βPhenoAgeAccel = 0.054) had a positive association (All P < 0.001). Stratified analysis revealed stronger accelerated aging effects in males, smokers, and drinkers. A strengthening trend in the association between DDS and AgeAccel as TDI quartiles increased was noted. CONCLUSIONS This study suggested that food consumption plays a role in aging process, and adherence to a higher diversity dietary is associated with the slowing down of the aging process.

Abstract
Macroalgae are considered healthy food ingredients due to their content in numerous bioactive compounds, and the traditional use of whole macroalgae in Asian cuisine suggests a contribution to longevity. Although much information is available about the bioactivity of pure algal compounds, such as different polyphenols and polysaccharides, documentation of potential effects of whole macroalgae as part of Western diets is limited. Lifestyle- and age-related diseases, which have a high impact on population health, are closely connected to underlying chronic inflammation. Therefore, we have studied crude extracts of green (Ulva fenestrata) and brown (Saccharina latissima) macroalgae, as two of the most promising food macroalgae in the Nordic countries for their effect on inflammation in vitro. Human macrophage-like reporter THP-1 cells were treated with macroalgae extracts and stimulated with lipopolysaccharide (LPS) to induce inflammatory signalling. Effects of the macroalgae extracts were assessed on transcription factor activity of NF-κB and IRF as well as secretion and/or expression of the cytokines TNF-α and IFN-β and chemokines IL-8 and CXCL10. The crude macroalgae extracts were further separated into polyphenol-enriched and polysaccharide-enriched fractions, which were also tested for their effect on transcription factor activity. Interestingly, we observed a selective activation of NF-κB, when cells were treated with macroalgae extracts. On the other hand, pretreatment with macroalgae extracts selectively repressed IRF activation when inflammatory signaling was subsequently induced by LPS. This effect was consistent for both tested species as well as for polyphenol- and polysaccharide-enriched fractions, of which the latter had more pronounced effects. Overall, this is the first indication of how macroalgae could modulate inflammatory signaling by selective activation and subsequent repression of different pathways. Further in vitro and in vivo studies of this mechanism would be needed to understand how macroalgae consumption could influence the prevention of noncommunicable, lifestyle- and age-related diseases that are highly related to unbalanced inflammatory processes.

Abstract
The Mediterranean diet (MD), rich in minimally processed plant foods and in monounsaturated fats but low in saturated fats, meat, and dairy products, represents one of the most studied diets for cardiovascular health. It has been shown, from both observational and randomized controlled trials, that MD reduces body weight, improves cardiovascular disease surrogates such as waist-to-hip ratios, lipids, and inflammation markers, and even prevents the development of fatal and nonfatal cardiovascular disease, diabetes, obesity, and other diseases. However, it is unclear whether it offers cardiovascular benefits from its individual components or as a whole. Furthermore, limitations in the methodology of studies and meta-analyses have raised some concerns over its potential cardiovascular benefits. MD is also associated with characteristic changes in the intestinal microbiota, mediated through its constituents. These include increased growth of species producing short-chain fatty acids, such as Clostridium leptum and Eubacterium rectale, increased growth of Bifidobacteria, Bacteroides, and Faecalibacterium prausnitzii species, and reduced growth of Firmicutes and Blautia species. Such changes are known to be favorably associated with inflammation, oxidative status, and overall metabolic health. This review will focus on the effects of MD on cardiovascular health through its action on gut microbiota.

Abstract
Breast cancer (BC) is the most common cancer in women, with 2.3 million diagnoses in 2020. There is growing evidence that lifestyle factors, including dietary factors, particularly the complex interactions and synergies between different foods and nutrients (and not a single nutrient or food), may be associated with a higher risk of BC. The aim of this work was to evaluate how the Italian Mediterranean Index (IMI), the Greek Mediterranean Index, the DASH score, and the EAT-Lancet score can help lower the risk of BC, and analyze if chronic low-grade inflammation may be one of the possible mechanisms through which dietary patterns influence breast cancer risk. We evaluated the effect of adherence to these four dietary quality indices in the 9144 women of the ORDET cohort who completed a dietary questionnaire. The effect of adherence to dietary patterns on chronic inflammation biomarkers was evaluated on a subsample of 552 participants. Hazard ratios (HRs) with 95% confidence intervals (CIs) for BC risk in relation to the index score categories used were estimated using multivariable Cox models adjusted for potential confounders. Regression coefficients (β), with 95% CI for C-reactive protein (CRP), TNF-α, IL-6, leptin, and adiponectin levels in relation to adherence to dietary patterns were evaluated with the linear regression model adjusted for potential confounders. IMI was inversely associated with BC in all women (HR: 0.76, 95% CI: 0.60-0.97, P trend = 0.04), particularly among postmenopausal women (HR: 0.64, 95% CI: 0.42-0.98, P trend = 0.11). None of the other dietary patterns was associated with BC risk. Higher IMI and Greek Mediterranean Index scores were inversely associated with circulating CRP (β: -0.10, 95% CI: -0.18, -0.02, and β: -0.13, 95% CI: -0.21, -0.04). The higher score of the EAT-Lancet Index was instead associated with a higher concentration of circulating levels of CRP (β: 0.10, 95% CI: 0.02, 0.18). In conclusion, these results suggest that adherence to a typical Italian Mediterranean diet protects against BC development, especially among postmenopausal women, possibly through modulation of chronic low-grade inflammation.

Abstract
Mounting evidence progressively appreciates the vital interplay between immunity and metabolism in a wide array of immunometabolic chronic disorders, both autoimmune and non-autoimmune mediated. The immune system regulates the functioning of cellular metabolism within organs like the brain, pancreas and/or adipose tissue by sensing and adapting to fluctuations in the microenvironment's nutrients, thereby reshaping metabolic pathways that greatly impact a pro- or anti-inflammatory immunophenotype. While it is agreed that the immune system relies on an adequate nutritional status to function properly, we are only just starting to understand how the supply of single or combined nutrients, all of them termed immunonutrients, can steer immune cells towards a less inflamed, tolerogenic immunophenotype. Polyphenols, a class of secondary metabolites abundant in Mediterranean foods, are pharmacologically active natural products with outstanding immunomodulatory actions. Upon binding to a range of receptors highly expressed in immune cells (e.g. AhR, RAR, RLR), they act in immunometabolic pathways through a mitochondria-centered multi-modal approach. First, polyphenols activate nutrient sensing via stress-response pathways, essential for immune responses. Second, they regulate mammalian target of rapamycin (mTOR)/AMP-activated protein kinase (AMPK) balance in immune cells and are well-tolerated caloric restriction mimetics. Third, polyphenols interfere with the assembly of NLR family pyrin domain containing 3 (NLRP3) in endoplasmic reticulum-mitochondria contact sites, inhibiting its activation while improving mitochondrial biogenesis and autophagosome-lysosome fusion. Finally, polyphenols impact chromatin remodeling and coordinates both epigenetic and metabolic reprogramming. This work moves beyond the well-documented antioxidant properties of polyphenols, offering new insights into the multifaceted nature of these compounds. It proposes a mechanistical appraisal on the regulatory pathways through which polyphenols modulate the immune response, thereby alleviating chronic low-grade inflammation. Furthermore, it draws parallels between pharmacological interventions and polyphenol-based immunonutrition in their modes of immunomodulation across a wide spectrum of socioeconomically impactful immunometabolic diseases such as Multiple Sclerosis, Diabetes (type 1 and 2) or even Alzheimer's disease. Lastly, it discusses the existing challenges that thwart the translation of polyphenols-based immunonutritional interventions into long-term clinical studies. Overcoming these limitations will undoubtedly pave the way for improving precision nutrition protocols and provide personalized guidance on tailored polyphenol-based immunonutrition plans.

Abstract
Age-related changes in intestinal microbiome composition and function are increasingly recognized as pivotal in the pathophysiology of aging and are associated with the aging phenotype. Diet is a major determinant of gut-microbiota composition throughout the entire lifespan, and several of the benefits of a healthy diet in aging could be mediated by the microbiome. Mediterranean diet (MD) is a traditional dietary pattern regarded as the healthy diet paradigm, and a large number of studies have demonstrated its benefits in promoting healthy aging. MD has also a positive modulatory effect on intestinal microbiome, favoring bacterial taxa involved in the synthesis of several bioactive compounds, such as short-chain fatty acids (SCFAs), that counteract inflammation, anabolic resistance, and tissue degeneration. Intervention studies conducted in older populations have suggested that the individual response of older subjects to MD, in terms of reduction of frailty scores and amelioration of cognitive function, is significantly mediated by the gut-microbiota composition and functionality. In this context, the pathophysiology of intestinal microbiome in aging should be considered when designing MD-based interventions tailored to the needs of geriatric patients.

Abstract
Introduction Circulating cytokines were considered to play a critical role in the initiation and propagation of sarcopenia and frailty from observational studies. This study aimed to find the casual association between circulating cytokines and sarcopenia and frailty from a genetic perspective by two-sample Mendelian randomization (MR) analysis. Methods Data for 41 circulating cytokines were extracted from the genome-wide association study dataset of 8,293 European participants. Inverse-variance weighted (IVW) method, MR-Egger, and weighted median method were applied to assess the relationship of circulating cytokines with the risk of aging-related syndromes and frailty. Furthermore, MR-Egger regression was used to indicate the directional pleiotropy, and Cochran's Q test was used to verify the potential heterogeneity. The "leave-one-out" method was applied to visualize whether there was a causal relationship affected by only one anomalous single-nucleotide polymorphisms. Results Genetic predisposition to increasing levels of interleukin-10 (IL-10), IL-12, and vascular endothelial growth factor (VEGF) was associated with the higher risk of low hand grip strength according to the IVW method [R = 1.05, 95% CI = 1.01-1.10, P = 0.028, false discovery rate (FDR)-adjusted P = 1.000; OR = 1.03, 95% CI = 1.00-1.07, P = 0.042, FDR-adjusted P = 0.784; OR = 1.02, 95% CI = 1.00-1.05, P = 0.038, FDR-adjusted P = 0.567]. Furthermore, genetically determined higher macrophage colony-stimulating factors (M-CSFs) were associated with a lower presence of appendicular lean mass (OR = 1.01, 95% CI = 1.00-1.02, P = 0.003, FDR-adjusted P = 0.103). Monokine induced by interferon-γ (MIG) and tumor necrosis factor-beta (TNF-β) were associated with a higher risk of frailty (OR = 1.03, 95% CI = 1.01-1.05, P < 0.0001, FDR-adjusted P = 0.012; OR = 1.01, 95% CI = 1.00-1.03, P = 0.013, FDR-adjusted P = 0.259). In this study, we did not find heterogeneity and horizontal pleiotropy between the circulating cytokines and the risk of frailty and sarcopenia. Conclusion Genetic predisposition to assess IL-10, IL-12, and VEGF levels was associated with a higher risk of low hand grip strength and M-CSF with the presence of appendicular lean mass. The high levels of TNF-β and MIG were associated with a higher risk of frailty. More studies will be required to explore the molecular biological mechanisms underlying the action of inflammatory factors.

Abstract
OBJECTIVE To investigate the association between DII with all-cause and cardiovascular disease (CVD) mortality among older adults in the U. S METHODS This prospective cohort study included older adults with complete DII data and mortality data from the National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey (NHANES) 2001-2018. Mortality outcomes were linked to National Death Index records through 31 December 2019. The multivariate Cox proportional hazards models were performed to evaluate the association between DII and mortality. Restricted cubic spline analyses were used to examine the nonlinear association of DII with all-cause and CVD mortality. RESULTS During the median follow-up date of 6.7 years, 4446 all-cause deaths were documented among 10,827 representative older adults, including 1230 CVD deaths. After multivariate adjustment, linear relationships between DII with all-cause mortality (P non-linear = 0.17) and non-linear relationship between DII with CVD mortality (P non-linear = 0.04) were observed. Compared to participants with the lowest quartile of DII scores (-5.28 to≤0.43), the multivariate-adjusted HRs and 95 %CI for participants with higher DII scores were 1.19 (Q2, 95 %CI: 1.08-1.31), 1.28 (Q3, 95 %CI: 1.14-1.44), 1.30 (Q4, 95 %CI: 1.17-1.44) for all-cause mortality (P trend <0.001) and 1.19 (Q2, 95 %CI: 0.99-1.43), 1.34 (Q3, 95 %CI: 1.10-1.62), 1.30 (Q4, 95 %CI: 1.06-1.58) for CVD mortality (P trend < 0.01), respectively. CONCLUSIONS In the representative sample of older adults in the U.S, higher DII scores were associated with increased risks of all-cause and CVD mortality.

Abstract
This review explores 'microb-aging' in the gut and its potential link to frailty aging. We explore this connection through alterations in microbiota's taxonomy and metabolism, as well as with concepts of ecological resilience, pathobionts emergence, and biogeography. We examine microb-aging in interconnected body organs, emphasizing the bidirectional relationship with 'inflammaging'. Finally, we discuss how targeting microb-aging could improve screening, diagnostic, and therapeutic approaches in geriatrics.

Abstract
OBJECTIVES Social isolation is recognised as a risk factor in the inflammatory process. This study explored the association between social isolation and the Dietary Inflammatory Index (DII) in community-dwelling older persons. METHODS This cross-sectional pilot study recruited 107 community-dwelling people aged over 55 years living in the Australian Capital Territory. Participants completed an extensive food frequency questionnaire and provided anthropometric and sociodemographic data. Social isolation was evaluated using the Lubben Social Network Scale (LSNS). Diet quality was assessed using DII. RESULTS Average age was 70.1 (±8.61) years and 62.8% were female. The average DII score was -1.10 (±1.21), indicating an anti-inflammatory diet. Higher LSNS was associated with lower DII (b (95% CI) = -0.041 (-0.066, -0.17); p < 0.01) and was positively influenced by the number of people in household (b (95% CI) = 5.731 (2.336, 9.127); p = 0.001). CONCLUSION Increased risk of social isolation was associated with an increased tendency towards a more inflammatory diet. Reducing social isolation may decrease the inflammatory component of dietary intake for older persons living independently in the community.

Abstract
BACKGROUND The global aging situation has reached a serious stage, and healthy lifestyles, like regular physical activity and eating breakfast, could slow the process. Phenotypic age (PhenoAge) is regarded as a novel measure of aging. Therefore, our study aimed to quantify the impact of physical activity and eating breakfast on aging via PhenoAge and phenotypic age acceleration (PhenoAgeAccel). METHODS A total of 3719 adults who participated in the National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey were involved in this study. Physical activity was divided into an active group and an inactive group. According to the number of reported breakfast recalls, eating breakfast was divided into the no recalls group, one recall group, and both recalls group. Sensitivity analysis was performed by stratified analysis. RESULTS Active physical activity was a protective factor for PhenoAge and PhenoAgeAccel. Compared to the inactive group, the β values of the active group were -8.36 (-10.09, -6.62) for PhenoAge and -1.67 (-2.21, -1.14) for PhenoAgeAccel. The stratified analysis results showed that in the groups reporting breakfast in both recalls, one recall, and no recalls, the β values of the active group were -8.84 (-10.70, -6.98), -8.17 (-12.34, -4.00), and -3.46 (-7.74, 0.82), respectively, compared to the inactive group. CONCLUSIONS Active physical activity was strongly correlated with lower values of PhenoAge and PhenoAgeAccel, but the association was no longer statistically significant when combined with not regularly eating breakfast.

Abstract
Background and aims Anemia is a widespread global health concern, and recent research has unveiled a link between anemia and inflammation. The Dietary Inflammation Index (DII) is a novel tool used to assess the overall inflammatory potential of an individual's diet. However, until now, there have been no studies demonstrating a connection between DII and anemia. This study aimed to explore the relationship between DII and the risk of anemia among Americans, as well as to examine the influence of other risk factors on this association. Methods Data from 32,244 patients were collected from the National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey (NHANES) database spanning from 1999 to 2018. Using multivariable logistic regression, we examined the correlation between DII and anemia. Subgroup analyses and smoothed curve analyses were conducted to further investigate the association between DII and anemia. Results The analysis revealed a significant positive association between higher DII scores and increased anemia risk in the American population (Odds Ratio [OR] = 1.06, 95% Confidence Interval [CI] = 1.03 to 1.09, p < 0.0001). This association remained consistent in subgroup analyses, encompassing various age groups, distinct Body Mass Index (BMI) categories, varying diabetes mellitus statuses, histories of hypertension, females, individuals with a RIP <3.5, and Non-Hispanic Black individuals. Notably, the association was particularly significant among non-smokers. Smoothed curve fitting analysis demonstrated a linear relationship between DII and the prevalence of anemia. Conclusion Our findings underscore a positive correlation between the inflammatory potential of one's diet and the risk of anemia, especially when coupled with other risk factors. Consequently, reducing the consumption of pro-inflammatory foods may serve as one of the effective measures against the development of anemia. Abstract
Osteoporosis is a systemic skeletal disease that seriously endangers the health of middle-aged and older adults. Recently, with the continuous deepening of research, an increasing number of studies have revealed gut microbiota as a potential target for osteoporosis, and the research concept of the gut-bone axis has gradually emerged. Additionally, the intake of dietary nutrients and the adoption of dietary patterns may affect the gut microbiota, and alterations in the gut microbiota might also influence the metabolic status of the host, thus adjusting bone metabolism. Based on the gut-bone axis, dietary intake can also participate in the modulation of bone metabolism by altering abundance, diversity, and composition of gut microbiota. Herein, combined with emerging literatures and relevant studies, this review is aimed to summarize the impacts of different dietary components and patterns on osteoporosis by acting on gut microbiota, as well as underlying mechanisms and proper dietary recommendations.

Abstract
PURPOSE OF REVIEW This study aims to review recent evidence (2022-2023) on the role of diet in promoting healthy aging in older adults. RECENT FINDINGS Current evidence of diet and healthy aging is limited to epidemiological studies. A healthy diet is beneficial for individual domains of intrinsic capacity, that is, cognition, locomotion, vitality, psychological, and/or sensory functions, with sex-specific differences reported. Only a few studies used the multidimensional concept of intrinsic capacity as an outcome. This review supports that a healthy diet for older adults consists of plenty of plant-based foods, adequate protein-rich foods, and healthy fats. Next to quantity, improving the quality and variety within food groups play a role in optimizing health. Data on the associations between adherence to national food-based dietary guidelines and intrinsic capacity are scarce. SUMMARY A healthy diet, centered on plant-based foods, adequate protein-rich foods and healthy fats, potentially promotes healthy aging. Future studies may evaluate the association between adherence to healthy dietary patterns (particularly national food-based dietary guidelines) and the multidimensional concept of intrinsic capacity, with consideration of sex-specific differences. Clinical trials are warranted to inform the causal effects of diet and outcomes related to intrinsic capacity.

Abstract
Dietary management is a crucial component of non-pharmacological treatment for hyperuricemia, yet there is a paucity of research on the impact of dietary habits on the survival outcomes of individuals with hyperuricemia. The objective of this study is to examine the association between dietary inflammatory index (DII) and the all-cause and cardiovascular disease (CVD) mortality in individuals with hyperuricemia. This study included 3093 adult participants from National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey (NHANES) 2001 to 2010. Participants were categorized into 4 groups based on quartiles of DII to demonstrate data characteristics, with sample weights considered. The relationship between DII and the risk of hyperuricemia was examined using multivariable logistic regression models. Kaplan-Meier models and Cox proportional hazards models were employed to assess the relationship between DII levels and the all-cause mortality in individuals with hyperuricemia, with the non-linear relationship tested using restricted cubic splines (RCS). Competing risk models were employed to investigate the association between DII levels and the CVD mortality in individuals diagnosed with hyperuricemia. Subgroup and sensitivity analysis were performed to confirm the robustness and reliability of the findings. Among the participants, 47.95% were aged over 60 years. A positive association observed between the highest quartile of DII level and the incidence of hyperuricemia (OR: 1.34, CI [1.13, 1.57]). Elevated DII levels were correlated with increased all-cause mortality (P value < .001) and CVD mortality (P value < .001) in participants. In comparison to the lowest quartile, the highest quartile of DII exhibited a 31% rise in all-cause mortality (HR: 1.31, CI [1.01, 1.68]) and a 50% increase in CVD mortality (HR: 1.50, CI [1.00, 2.26]). No indication of a nonlinear association between DII levels and all-cause mortality (p-non-linear = .43). These findings indicate a positive correlation between the pro-inflammatory diet and the incidence of hyperuricemia. Additionally, a pro-inflammatory diet may elevate the all-cause and CVD mortality in individuals with hyperuricemia.

Abstract
The proportion of patients diagnosed with cancer has been shown to rise with the increasing aging global population. Advanced age is a major risk factor for morbidity and mortality in older adults. As individuals experience varying health statuses, particularly with age, it poses a challenge for medical professionals in the cancer field to obtain standardized treatment outcomes. Hence, relying solely on chronological age and disease-related parameters is inadequate for clinical decision-making for elderly patients. With functional, multimorbidity-related, and psychosocial changes that occur with aging, oncologic diseases may develop and be treated differently from younger patients, leading to unique challenges in treatment efficacy and tolerance. To overcome this challenge, personalized therapy using biomarkers has emerged as a promising solution. Various categories of biomarkers, including inflammatory, hematological, metabolic, endocrine, and DNA modification-related indicators, may display features related to both cancer and aging, aiding in the development of innovative therapeutic approaches for patients with cancer in old age. Furthermore, physical functional measurements as non-molecular phenotypic biomarkers are being investigated for their potential complementary role in structured multidomain strategies to combat age-related diseases such as cancer. This review provides insight into the current developments, recent discoveries, and significant challenges in cancer and aging biomarkers, with a specific focus on their application in advanced age.

Abstract
BACKGROUND The role of protein in glucose homeostasis has demonstrated conflicting results. However, little research exists on its impact following weight loss. This study examined the impact of protein supplementation on glucose homeostasis in older adults >65 years with obesity seeking to lose weight. METHODS A 12-week, nonrandomized, parallel group intervention of protein (PG) and nonprotein (NPG) arms for 28 older rural adults (body mass index (BMI) ≥ 30 kg/m2) was conducted at a community aging center. Both groups received twice weekly physical therapist-led group strength training classes. The PG consumed a whey protein supplement three times per week, post-strength training. Primary outcomes included pre/post-fasting glucose, insulin, inflammatory markers, and homeostasis model assessment of insulin resistance (HOMA-IR). RESULTS Mean age and baseline BMI were 72.9 ± 4.4 years and 37.6 ± 6.9 kg/m2 in the PG and 73.0 ± 6.3 and 36.6 ± 5.5 kg/m2 in the NPG, respectively. Mean weight loss was -3.45 ± 2.86 kg in the PG and -5.79 ± 3.08 kg in the NPG (p < 0.001). There was a smaller decrease in pre- vs. post-fasting glucose levels (PG: -4 mg ± 13.9 vs. NPG: -12.2 ± 25.8 mg/dL; p = 0.10), insulin (-7.92 ± 28.08 vs. -46.7 ± 60.8 pmol/L; p = 0.01), and HOMA-IR (-0.18 ± 0.64 vs. -1.08 ± 1.50; p = 0.02) in the PG compared to the NPG. CONCLUSIONS Protein supplementation during weight loss demonstrated a smaller decrease in insulin resistance compared to the NPG, suggesting protein may potentially mitigate beneficial effects of exercise on glucose homeostasis.

Abstract
BACKGROUND AND OBJECTIVE Although the the Dietary Inflammatory Index (DII) serves to be one of the reliable indicator for hyperlipidaemia, there is still uncertainty about its relationship to prognosis in the hyperlipidaemic population. In current study, the DII levels were analyzed in relation to the mortality risk among among the hyperlipidaemic individuals with the aim of determining any prospective correlation. METHODS 14,460 subjects with hyperlipidaemia from the 10-year (2001-2010) National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey (NHANES) were chosen for this study. The endpoint event for follow-up was all-cause mortality, and subjects were tracked for up to December 31, 2019, or death, whichever occurred first. The tertiles of the DII levels were utilized for categorizing the study population into three groups. Survival curves, Cox proportional hazards regression models, restricted cubic spline (RCS), subgroup and interaction analyses, and sensitivity analyses were employed sequentially for the purpose of evaluating the association of the DII with mortality. RESULTS 3170 (21.92%) all-cause deaths were recorded during an average 148-month follow-up period. Kaplan-Meier survival curves indicated that the survival rate of participants divided into the low DII group was substantially improved compared to that of those in the higher DII group (log-rank P < 0.001). After controlling for confounders, higher levels of DII were observed to be meaningfully linked to an elevated risk of death, no matter whether DII was specified for the continuous (hazard ratio (HR): 1.06; 95% confidence interval (CI): 1.04-1.08) or the categorical variable (HR: 1.22; 95% CI: 1.11-1.33). The DII and mortality displayed a linear association, according to the RCS. Stratified and sensitivity analyses reinforced the proof that these findings were reliable. CONCLUSION Among patients with hyperlipidaemia, the risk of death was positively and linearly linked with DII levels.

Abstract
The cerebellum is responsible for complex motor functions, like maintaining balance and stance, coordination of voluntary movements, motor learning, and cognitive tasks. During aging, most of these functions deteriorate, which results in falls and accidents. The aim of this work was to elucidate the effect of a standardized pomegranate extract during four months of supplementation in elderly mice to prevent frailty and improve the oxidative state. Male C57Bl/6J eighteen-month-old mice were evaluated for frailty using the "Valencia Score" at pre-supplementation and post-supplementation periods. We analyzed lipid peroxidation in the cerebellum and brain cortex and the glutathione redox status in peripheral blood. In addition, a set of aging-related genes in cerebellum and apoptosis biomarkers was measured via real-time polymerase chain reaction (RT-PCR). Our results showed that pomegranate extract supplementation improved the motor skills of C57Bl/6J aged mice in motor coordination, neuromuscular function, and monthly weight loss, but no changes in grip strength and endurance were found. Furthermore, pomegranate extract reversed the increase in malondialdehyde due to aging in the cerebellum and increased the reduced glutathione/oxidized glutathione (GSH/GSSG) ratio in the blood. Finally, aging and apoptosis biomarkers improved in aged mice supplemented with pomegranate extract in the cerebellum but not in the cerebral cortex.

Abstract
OBJECTIVE Immune checkpoint inhibitors (ICIs) have shown promise in hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC) treatment. With the increasing use of ICIs in cancer treatment, identifying biomarkers that can predict the prognosis of patients receiving ICIs is of great importance. We aimed to investigate the potential of circulating immunoglobulins and the combination of Geriatric Nutritional Risk Index (GNRI) with IgM to predict prognosis in patients with HCC who received ICIs. METHODS Clinical and pathological data were collected from 101 patients with HCC who were administered ICIs and underwent circulating immunoglobulin testing between January 2018 and December 2021. Survival analysis, Cox regression analysis, and nomogram construction were performed to evaluate the prognostic value of the indicators. RESULTS In the preliminary survival analysis, we observed a significant correlation between patient prognosis and IgM levels. Patients with low IgM had shorter survival times. Upon combining the GNRI with IgM, patients with low GNRI and IgM levels had shorter progression-free survival (PFS) and overall survival (OS) (P < 0.001). Additionally, GNRI-IgM had the highest area under the curve (AUC) and was identified as an independent prognostic marker in this study. The C-indices of the nomograms for PFS and OS were 0.797 (0.734-0.860) and 0.827 (0.778-0.876), respectively. CONCLUSIONS IgM was significantly associated with the prognosis of patients with HCC receiving ICIs. The combination of the GNRI with IgM provided superior prognostic value and served as an independent prognostic marker. The GNRI-IgM can be used to effectively identify patients with HCC who are responsive to ICIs.

Abstract
The emergence of immune checkpoint inhibitors (ICIs) has provided a new treatment option for patients with hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC). However, further evaluation is needed for determining biomarkers for the use of ICIs. The present study evaluated the prognostic value of certain nutritional and inflammatory markers in patients with HCC who received ICIs. In the present study, the clinical data of 151 patients with HCC who received ICIs at Harbin Medical University Cancer Hospital from January 2019 to December 2021 were collected. The blood parameters of all patients before treatment were collected to evaluate certain nutritional and inflammatory markers, including the prognostic nutrition index (PNI), nutritional risk index (NRI), geriatric NRI (GNRI), systemic immune-inflammation index (SII), systemic inflammation response index (SIRI) and advanced lung cancer inflammation index (ALI). Patients were grouped using the cut-off value calculated using receiver operating characteristic (ROC) curves, and the relationship between these biomarkers and prognosis was evaluated through survival analysis. Furthermore, the prognostic value of these biomarkers was assessed through multivariate Cox regression analysis and construction of nomograms. Finally, time-ROC curves were plotted to compare the differences in predicting prognosis between the biomarkers. In the preliminary survival analysis, all inflammatory and nutritional markers included in the present study were significantly associated with the prognosis of HCC in patients who received ICIs. Similar results were obtained in a subgroup analysis of patients with different Barcelona Clinic Liver Cancer (BCLC) stages. Multivariate Cox regression analysis demonstrated that GNRI, PNI, BCLC stage and Tumor-Node-Metastasis (TNM) stage were significantly associated with progression-free survival (PFS), whereas GNRI, BCLC stage and TNM stage were also significantly associated with overall survival (OS). Furthermore, the time-ROC curves indicated that nutritional indicators had a higher prognostic value in all indexes, especially GNRI. The C-index (95% confidence interval) of the nomograms for predicting the survival probability of patients who received ICIs were 0.801 (0.746-0.877) and 0.823 (0.761-0.898) for PFS and overall OS, respectively, which also showed high accuracy. In conclusion, the present study demonstrated that PNI, GNRI, NRI, SII, SIRI and ALI were all related to the efficacy of ICIs in HCC and could serve as non-invasive biomarkers for ICI treatment effectiveness. Moreover, compared with inflammatory markers, nutritional markers had greater predictive ability, with GNRI being the biomarker with the best prognostic value.

Abstract
Objective This study was to evaluate the prognostic value of the Naples prognostic score (NPS) in adult patients with asthma. Methods Data on 44 601 participants from the 1999-2018 National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey (NHANES) were analyzed. The NPS was calculated based on serum albumin, total cholesterol, neutrophil-to-lymphocyte ratio (NLR), and lymphocyte-to-monocyte ratio (LMR), and participants were divided into 3 groups. Self-administered questionnaires were used to collect information on asthma, and mortality was identified using the National Death Index through December 31, 2019. Multiple logistic regressions were used to analyze the relationship between NPS and its components and the prevalence of asthma. Kaplan-Meier survival analysis, Cox proportional regressions, and the random survival forest (RSF) were used to assess the significance of NPS and its components in predicting all-cause and cause-specific (cardiovascular, cancer, and respiratory diseases) mortality in asthma patients. Results The mean age of the participants was 47.59 ± 0.18 years, and 48.47% were male. The prevalence of asthma was 13.11%. The participants were categorized into 3 groups: 8306 (18.6%) participants were in group 0 (NPS 0), 30 842 (69.2%) were in group 1 (NPS 1 or 2), and 5453 (11.2%) were in group 2 (NPS 3 or 4). Compared to the reference group, participants in group 2 had a higher prevalence of asthma (odds ratio [OR] = 1.40 [1.24-1.56]). Participants with asthma in group 2 had a significantly increased risk of all-cause mortality (hazard ratio [HR] = 2.42 [1.67-3.50]), cardiovascular mortality (HR = 2.68 [1.50-4.79]), cancer mortality (HR = 2.10 [1.00-4.45]), and respiratory disease mortality (HR = 3.00 [1.18-7.65]) compared to those with asthma in group 0. The RSF showed that NPS had the highest value in predicting all-cause mortality in adults with asthma, compared to its components. Conclusions The results of this study indicate that the NPS is a powerful prognostic indicator for outcomes in asthma patients.

Abstract
Aging is usually considered a key risk factor associated with multiple diseases, such as neurodegenerative diseases, cardiovascular diseases and cancer. Furthermore, the burden of age-related diseases has become a global challenge. It is of great significance to search for drugs to extend lifespan and healthspan. Cannabidiol (CBD), a natural nontoxic phytocannabinoid, has been regarded as a potential candidate drug for antiaging. An increasing number of studies have suggested that CBD could benefit healthy longevity. Herein, we summarized the effect of CBD on aging and analyzed the possible mechanism. All these conclusions may provide a perspective for further study of CBD on aging.

Abstract
Evidence for the effects of dietary diversity changes and cognitive frailty (CF) in the older adults is not clear. This study aimed to investigate the relationship between dietary diversity changes and CF in older adults Chinese. A total of 14,382 participants (mean age: 82.3 years) were enrolled. Dietary diversity scores (DDSs) were collected and calculated using a food frequency questionnaire. DDS changes between baseline and first follow-up were categorized into nine patterns. The associations between DDS changes and the incidence of CF were estimated using Cox proportional hazards models. During an 80,860 person-year follow-up, 3023 CF cases were identified. Groups with a decrease in DDS had increased CF risk compared with the high-to-high DDS group, with adjusted hazard ratios (HRs; 95% confidence intervals (Cis)) of 1.30 (1.06, 1.59), 2.04 (1.51, 2.74), and 1.81 (1.47, 2.22) for high-to-medium, high-to-low, and medium-to-low groups, respectively. Lower overall DDS groups were associated with greater CF risks, with HRs (95% CIs) of 1.49 (1.19, 1.86) for the low-to-medium group and 1.96 (1.53, 2.52) for the low-to-low group. Compared with the high-to-high group, significant associations with CF were found in other DDS change groups; HRs ranged from 1.38 to 3.12 for the plant-based DDS group and from 1.24 to 1.32 for the animal-based DDS group. Additionally, extreme and moderate declines in overall DDS increased CF risk compared with stable DDS, with HRs (95% CIs) of 1.67 (1.50, 1.86) and 1.13 (1.03, 1.24), respectively. In conclusion, among older adults, a declining or persistently low DDS and a moderately or extremely declining DDS were linked to higher incident CF. Plant-based DDS changes correlated more strongly with CF than animal-based DDS changes.

Abstract
The process of aging is marked by a gradual deterioration in the physiological functions and functional reserves of various tissues and organs, leading to an increased susceptibility to diseases and even death. Aging manifests in a tissue- and organ-specific manner, and is characterized by varying rates and direct and indirect interactions among different tissues and organs. Cardiovascular disease (CVD) is the leading cause of death globally, with older adults (aged >70 years) accounting for approximately two-thirds of CVD-related deaths. The prevalence of CVD increases exponentially with an individual's age. Aging is a critical independent risk factor for the development of CVD. AMP-activated protein kinase (AMPK) activation exerts cardioprotective effects in the heart and restores cellular metabolic functions by modulating gene expression and regulating protein levels through its interaction with multiple target proteins. Additionally, AMPK enhances mitochondrial function and cellular energy status by facilitating the utilization of energy substrates. This review focuses on the role of AMPK in the process of cardiac aging and maintaining normal metabolic levels and redox homeostasis in the heart, particularly in the presence of oxidative stress and the invasion of inflammatory factors.

Abstract
Inflammation plays a pivotal role in the resolution of infection or tissue damage. In addition, inflammation is considered a hallmark of aging, which in turn compromises wound healing. Thymbra capitata is an aromatic plant, whose infusion is traditionally used as an anti-inflammatory and wound-healing agent. In this study, a T. capitata infusion was prepared and characterized by HPLC-PDA-ESI-MSn and its safety profile determined by the resazurin metabolic assay. The anti-inflammatory potential was revealed in lipopolysaccharide (LPS)-stimulated macrophages by assessing nitric oxide (NO) release and levels of inducible nitric oxide synthase (iNOS) and the interleukin-1β pro-form (pro-IL-1β). Wound-healing capacity was determined using the scratch assay. The activity of senescence-associated β-galactosidase was used to unveil the anti-senescent potential, along with the nuclear accumulation of yH2AX and p21 levels. The antiradical potential was assessed by DPPH and ABTS scavenging assays. The infusion contains predominantly rosmarinic acid and salvianolic acids. The extract decreased NO, iNOS, and pro-IL-1β levels. Interestingly, the extract promoted wound healing and decreased β-galactosidase activity, as well as yH2AX and p21 levels. The present work highlights strong antiradical, anti-inflammatory, and wound healing capacities, corroborating the traditional uses ascribed to this plant. We have described, for the first time for this extract, anti-senescent properties.

Abstract
Aging is characterized by alterations in the inflammatory microenvironment, which is tightly regulated by a complex network of inflammatory mediators. Excessive calorie consumption contributes to age- and lifestyle-associated diseases like obesity, type 2 diabetes, cardiovascular disorders, and cancer, while limited nutrient availability may lead to systemic health-promoting adaptations. Geroprotective effects of short-term caloric restriction (CR) can beneficially regulate innate immune receptors and interferon signaling in the liver of aged mice, but how CR impacts the hepatic release of immunomodulatory mediators like cytokines and lipid mediators (LM) is elusive. Here, we investigated the impact of aging on the inflammatory microenvironment in the liver and its linkage to calorie consumption. The livers of female young and aged C57BL/6JRj mice, as well as of aged mice after caloric restriction (CR) up to 28 days, with and without subsequent re-feeding (2 days), were evaluated. Surprisingly, despite differences in the hepatic proteome of young and old mice, aging did not promote a pro-inflammatory environment in the liver, but it reduced lipoxygenase-mediated formation of LM from polyunsaturated fatty acids without affecting the expression of the involved lipoxygenases and related oxygenases. Moreover, CR failed to ameliorate the secretion of pro-inflammatory cytokines but shifted the LM production to the formation of monohydroxylated LM with inflammation-resolving features. Unexpectedly, re-feeding after CR even further decreased the inflammatory response as LM species were markedly downregulated. Our findings raise the question of how short-term CR is indeed beneficial as a nutritional intervention for healthy elderly subjects and further stress the necessity to address tissue-specific inflammatory states.

Abstract
Gender differences and microbiota are gaining increasing attention. This study aimed to assess gender differences in gastric bacterial microbiota between subjects with healthy stomachs and those with autoimmune atrophic gastritis. This was a post hoc analysis of 52 subjects undergoing gastroscopy for dyspepsia (57.7% healthy stomach, 42.3% autoimmune atrophic gastritis). Gastric biopsies were obtained for histopathology and genomic DNA extraction. Gastric microbiota were assessed by sequencing the hypervariable regions of the 16SrRNA gene. The bacterial profile at the phylum level was reported as being in relative abundance expressed as 16SrRNA OTUs (>0.5%) and biodiversity calculated as Shannon-diversity index-H. All data were stratified for the female and male gender. Results showed that women with healthy stomachs had a higher gastric bacterial abundance and less microbial diversity compared to men. Likely due to hypochlorhydria and the non-acid intragastric environment, autoimmune atrophic gastritis seems to reset gender differences in gastric bacterial abundance and reduce biodiversity in males, showing a greater extent of dysbiosis in terms of reduced biodiversity in men. Differences between gender on taxa frequency at the phylum and genus level in healthy subjects and autoimmune atrophic gastritis were observed. The impact of these findings on the gender-specific natural history of autoimmune atrophic gastritis remains to be elucidated; in any case, gender differences should deserve attention in gastric microbiota studies.

Abstract
The emphasis on healthy nutrition is gaining a forefront place in current biomedical sciences. Nutritional deficiencies and imbalances have been widely demonstrated to be involved in the genesis and development of many world-scale public health burdens, such as metabolic and cardiovascular diseases. In recent years, bee pollen is emerging as a scientifically validated candidate, which can help diminish conditions through nutritional interventions. This matrix is being extensively studied, and has proven to be a very rich and well-balanced nutrient pool. In this work, we reviewed the available evidence on the interest in bee pollen as a nutrient source. We mainly focused on bee pollen richness in nutrients and its possible roles in the main pathophysiological processes that are directly linked to nutritional imbalances. This scoping review analyzed scientific works published in the last four years, focusing on the clearest inferences and perspectives to translate cumulated experimental and preclinical evidence into clinically relevant insights. The promising uses of bee pollen for malnutrition, digestive health, metabolic disorders, and other bioactivities which could be helpful to readjust homeostasis (as it is also true in the case of anti-inflammatory or anti-oxidant needs), as well as the benefits on cardiovascular diseases, were identified. The current knowledge gaps were identified, along with the practical challenges that hinder the establishment and fructification of these uses. A complete data collection made with a major range of botanical species allows more robust clinical information.

Abstract
Aging shows itself not just at the cellular level, with shortened telomeres and cell cycle arrest, but also at the organ and organismal level, with diminished brainpower, dry eyes, intestinal inflammation, muscular atrophy, wrinkles, etc. When the gut microbiota, often called the "virtual organ of the host," fails to function normally, it can lead to a cascade of health problems including, but not limited to, inflammatory bowel disease, obesity, metabolic liver disease, type II diabetes, cardiovascular disease, cancer, and even neurological disorders. An effective strategy for restoring healthy gut bacteria is fecal microbiota transplantation (FMT). It can reverse the effects of aging on the digestive system, the brain, and the vision by transplanting the functional bacteria found in the excrement of healthy individuals into the gut tracts of patients. This paves the way for future research into using the microbiome as a therapeutic target for disorders associated with aging.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Dietary-induced inflammation is potentially associated with sarcopenia. Nevertheless, few studies have investigated the structure of the inflammatory diet and its correlation with muscle function and performance in both the upper and lower limbs. This study was performed to explore the association of the dietary inflammatory index (DII) with sarcopenia and its diagnostic parameters. METHODS We conducted a cross-sectional survey on a sample of 515 Chinese community-dwelling older adults selected through multistage cluster sampling from three districts in Shanghai. DII scores were calculated using a validated food frequency questionnaire. Sarcopenia and its diagnostic parameters were determined based on the definition set by the Asian Working Group on Sarcopenia (AWGS). RESULTS The mean age of study participants was 71.31 ± 4.71 years. The prevalence of sarcopenia in the cohort was 12.4%. Older adults in the highest DII quartile had a 3.339 times increased risk of sarcopenia compared to those in the lowest quartile (OR Quartile4vs1:3.339, 95%CI: 1.232, 9.052, p-trend: 0.004) after adjusting for confounding factors. Additionally, a more pro-inflammatory diet was associated with lower appendicular skeletal muscle index (ASMI) (OR Quartile4vs1: 3.005, 95%CI: 1.275, 7.318, p-trend: 0.005), a higher 5-times sit-stand test time score (OR Quartile4vs1: 4.942, 95%CI: 1.745, 13.993, p-trend: 0.005), and lower gait speed (OR Quartile4vs1: 2.392, 95%CI: 1.104, 5.185, p-trend: 0.041) after adjusting for confounding factors. However, there was no significant association between DII, handgrip strength, and Short Physical Performance Battery (SPPB) score in either the unadjusted or adjusted model. CONCLUSION This study found that the association between consuming a more pro-inflammatory diet and sarcopenia in Chinese community-dwelling older adults was mainly due to underlying low intakes of dietary energy, protein, and anti-inflammatory foods, and not due to the high intake of pro-inflammatory foods. Meanwhile, DII was more highly correlated with lower limb muscle strength and performance compared to upper limb muscle strength.

Abstract
BACKGROUND S100 calcium-binding protein A9 (S100A9) is a danger-associated molecular pattern molecule that mediates the inflammatory response. Inflammation is essential in aging-related cardiovascular diseases. However, less is known regarding the role of S100A9 in vascular aging. METHODS S100A9 null mice were used to investigate the role of S100A9 in aging-related pathologies. Artery rings were used to measure the functional characteristics of vascular with a pressurized myograph. Telomere length, Sirtuin activity, oxidative stress, and endothelial nitric oxide synthetase (eNOS) activity were used to elevate vascular senescence. Intraperitoneal glucose tolerance (IPGTT) and insulin sensitivity test (IST) were employed to investigate the effects of S100A9 on insulin resistance. Inflammation response was reflected by the concentration of inflammatory cytokines. The Toll-like receptor 4 (TLR4) and receptor for advanced glycation end products (RAGE) inhibitors were used to identify the downstream molecular mechanisms of S100A9 in aging-induced senescence in endothelial cells. RESULTS S100A9 expression in vascular increased with aging in mice and humans. Deficiency of S100A9 alleviated vascular senescence in aged mice, as evidenced by increased telomere length, Sirtuin activity, and eNOS activity. Meanwhile, S100A9 knockout improved endothelium-dependent vasodilatation and endothelial continuity in aged mice. Moreover, the increased insulin resistance, oxidative stress, and inflammation were mitigated by S100A9 deletion in aged mice. In vitro, S100A9 induced senescence in endothelial cells, and that effect was blunted by TLR4 but not RAGE inhibitors. CONCLUSION The present study suggested that S100A9 may contribute to aging-related pathologies and endothelial dysfunction via the TLR4 pathway. Therefore, targeting S100A9/TLR4 signaling pathway may represent a crucial therapeutic strategy to prevent age-related cardiovascular diseases.

Abstract
The intestinal epithelium consists of cells derived from continuously cycling Lgr5hi intestinal stem cells (Lgr5hi ISCs) that mature developmentally in an ordered fashion as the cells progress along the crypt-luminal axis. Perturbed function of Lgr5hi ISCs with aging is documented, but the consequent impact on overall mucosal homeostasis has not been defined. Using single-cell RNA sequencing, the progressive maturation of progeny was dissected in the mouse intestine, which revealed that transcriptional reprogramming with aging in Lgr5hi ISCs retarded the maturation of cells in their progression along the crypt-luminal axis. Importantly, treatment with metformin or rapamycin at a late stage of mouse lifespan reversed the effects of aging on the function of Lgr5hi ISCs and subsequent maturation of progenitors. The effects of metformin and rapamycin overlapped in reversing changes of transcriptional profiles but were also complementary, with metformin more efficient than rapamycin in correcting the developmental trajectory. Therefore, our data identify novel effects of aging on stem cells and the maturation of their daughter cells contributing to the decline of epithelial regeneration and the correction by geroprotectors.

Abstract
A high-compliance dietary intervention was conducted for 2 weeks in adults aged 50 years and older to investigate the preventing aging effects of a polyphenol-probiotic-enhanced diet (P-diet) by using inflammatory biological age (IBA). Following the P-diet, levels of interleukin-6 (IL-6), IL-10, and C-reactive protein were reduced. These effects were accompanied by a significant increase in the richness of Lactobacillus and Bifidobacterium and decrease in CAG_56, as well as an increase in butyrate and acetate and decrease in lysine, uracil, and valine. We optimized a model by a back propagation artificial neural network to evaluate the degree of aging, with an R2 of 0.68. After the P-diet intervention, IBA was younger than chronological age and the inflammatory aging potential (Δage) was observably reduced by 90.12%, with change in Δage having a direct negative association with Akkermansia. Overall, P-diet may alleviate chronic low-grade inflammation and thus prevent the procession of inflammatory aging.

Abstract
Aromatic plants are reported to display pharmacological properties, including anti-aging. This work aims to disclose the anti-aging effect of the essential oil (EO) of Thymbra capitata (L.) Cav., an aromatic and medicinal plant widely used as a spice, as well as of the hydrodistillation residual water (HRW), a discarded by-product of EO hydrodistillation. The phytochemical characterization of EO and HRW was assessed by GC-MS and HPLC-PDA-ESI-MSn, respectively. The DPPH, ABTS, and FRAP assays were used to disclose the antioxidant properties. The anti-inflammatory potential was evaluated using lipopolysaccharide-stimulated macrophages by assessing NO production, iNOS, and pro-IL-1β protein levels. Cell migration was evaluated using the scratch wound assay, and the etoposide-induced senescence was used to assess the modulation of senescence. The EO is mainly characterized by carvacrol, while the HRW is predominantly characterized by rosmarinic acid. The HRW exerts a stronger antioxidant effect in the DPPH and FRAP assays, whereas the EO was the most active sample in the ABTS assay. Both extracts reduce NO, iNOS, and pro-IL-1β. The EO has no effect on cell migration and presents anti-senescence effects. In opposition, HRW reduces cell migration and induces cellular senescence. Overall, our study highlights interesting pharmacological properties for both extracts, EO being of interest as an anti-aging ingredient and HRW relevant in cancer therapy.

Abstract
Undeniably, biological age can significantly differ between individuals of similar chronological age. Longitudinal, deep multi-omic profiling has recently enabled the identification of individuals with distinct aging phenotypes, termed 'ageotypes'. This effort has provided a plethora of data and new insights into the diverse molecular mechanisms presumed to drive aging. Translational opportunities stemming from this knowledge continue to evolve, providing an opportunity for the provision of nutritional interventions aiming to decelerate the aging process. In this framework, the contemporary ageotypes classification was revisited via in silico analyses, with the brain and nervous system being identified as the primary targets of age-related biomolecules, acting through inflammatory and metabolic pathways. Nutritional and lifestyle factors affecting these pathways in the brain and central nervous system that could help guide personalized recommendations for the attainment of healthy aging are discussed.

Abstract
Background and Objectives: In-stent restenosis (ISR) is a major problem in patients undergoing percutaneous coronary intervention. The prognostic nutritional index (PNI) is a nutritional status score used in the literature to determine the prognosis of coronary artery disease. In this study, we aimed to investigate the effect of preprocedural PNI values on the risk of ISR in patients with stable coronary artery disease who underwent successful percutaneous coronary intervention. Materials and Methods: This retrospective study included 809 patients. Stent restenosis was evaluated in the follow-up coronary angiography of the patients due to stable angina pectoris or acute coronary syndrome. The patients were divided into two groups based on those with (n = 236) and without (n = 573) in-stent restenosis, and their nutritional status was compared with PNI. The PNI values before the first angiography of the patients were calculated. Results: The mean PNI score was significantly lower in patients with ISR than in those without ISR (49.5 vs. 52.3, p < 0.001). Concerning the results of the Cox regression hazard model for predictors of ISR, PNI was significantly associated with the development of ISR (HR = 0.932, 95% CI: 0.909–0.956, p < 0.001). In addition, stent type, stent length, and diabetes mellitus were associated with the development of ISR. Conclusions: A low PNI value indicates poor nutritional status, which is thought to accelerate inflammation processes and cause atherosclerosis and ISR.

Abstract
Healthy successful aging with preserved mental and cognitive health is expected to be one of the most important challenges of the growing old population globally. Studies investigating these multi-dimensional aspects of senescence are important to identify potential targets for early prevention. The aim of this study was to investigate the relation between adherence to the Mediterranean diet and mental and cognitive health, quality of life, and successful aging in middle-age and older adults living in Sicily, southern Italy. Data from a sample of 883 individuals was collected including information on food intake (through a 110-item food frequency questionnaire), sleep quality (through the Pittsburgh sleep quality index) depressive symptoms (through the Center for the Epidemiological Studies of Depression Short Form), quality of life (through the Manchester Short Assessment of Quality of Life), cognitive status (through the Short Portable Mental Status Questionnaire), and overall successful aging (through the Successful Aging Index). Multivariate logistic regression analyses were conducted to assess the association between adherence to the Mediterranean diet and the outcomes investigated. After adjustment for potential confounding factors, individuals in the highest quartile of adherence to the Mediterranean diet were less likely to have cognitive impairment (OR = 0.19, 95 % CI: 0.04, 0.86), depressive symptoms (OR = 0.19, 95 % CI: 0.08, 0.46) and more likely to have good quality of life (OR = 14.04, 95 % CI: 6.81, 28.93); significant results were also found for individuals in the third quartile of Mediterranean diet adherence and good sleep quality (OR = 1.65, 95 % CI: 1.03, 2.64). Moreover, individuals in the highest quartile of adherence were more likely to have a successful aging (OR = 1.65, 95 % CI: 1.01, 2.68). In conclusion, this study supports the hypothesis that adherence to the Mediterranean diet provides a positive trajectory toward a healthy successful aging, with major potential benefits toward mental and cognitive health.

Abstract
The process of ageing is characteristic of multicellular organisms associated with late stages of the lifecycle and is manifested through a plethora of phenotypes. Its underlying mechanisms are correlated with age-dependent diseases, especially neurodegenerative diseases such as Alzheimer's disease (AD), Parkinson's disease (PD) and multiple sclerosis (MS) that are accompanied by social and financial difficulties for patients. Over time, people not only become more prone to neurodegeneration but they also lose the ability to trigger pivotal restorative mechanisms. In this review, we attempt to present the already known molecular and cellular hallmarks that characterize ageing in association with their impact on the central nervous system (CNS)'s structure and function intensifying possible preexisting pathogenetic conditions. A thorough and elucidative study of the underlying mechanisms of ageing will be able to contribute further to the development of new therapeutic interventions to effectively treat age-dependent manifestations of neurodegenerative diseases.

Abstract
Accumulating evidence indicates gut microbiota contributes to aging-related disorders. However, the exact mechanism underlying gut dysbiosis-related pathophysiological changes during aging remains largely unclear. In the current study, we first performed gut microbiota remodeling on old mice by fecal microbiota transplantation (FMT) from young mice, and then characterized the bacteria signature that was specifically altered by FMT. Our results revealed that FMT significantly improved natural aging-related systemic disorders, particularly exerted hepatoprotective effects, and improved glucose sensitivity, hepatosplenomegaly, inflammaging, antioxidative capacity and intestinal barrier. Moreover, FMT particularly increased the abundance of fecal A.muciniphila, which was almost nondetectable in old mice. Interestingly, A.muciniphila supplementation also exerted similar benefits with FMT on old mice. Notably, targeted metabolomics on short chain fatty acids (SCFAs) revealed that only acetic acid was consistently reversed by FMT. Then, acetic acid intervention exerted beneficial actions on both Caenorhabditis elegans and natural aging mice. In conclusion, our current study demonstrated that gut microbiota remodeling improved natural aging-related disorders through A.muciniphila and its derived acetic acid, suggesting that interventions with potent stimulative capacity on A. muciniphila growth and production of acetic acid was alternative and effective way to maintain healthy aging. Abstract
The importance of the interplay between inflammation and nutrition has generated much interest in recent times. Inflammation has been identified as a key driver for disease-related malnutrition, leading to anorexia, reduced food intake, muscle catabolism, and insulin resistance, which are stimulating a catabolic state. Interesting recent data suggest that inflammation also modulates the response to nutritional treatment. Studies have demonstrated that patients with high inflammation show no response to nutritional interventions, while patients with lower levels of inflammation do. This may explain the contradictory results of nutritional trials to date. Several studies of heterogeneous patient populations, or in the critically ill or advanced cancer patients, have not found significant benefits on clinical outcome. Vice versa, several dietary patterns and nutrients with pro- or anti-inflammatory properties have been identified, demonstrating that nutrition influences inflammation. Within this review, we summarize and discuss recent advances in both the role of inflammation in malnutrition and the effect of nutrition on inflammation.
