Applications of synthetic polymers in clinical medicine

Direct-ink-writable nanocellulose ternary hydrogels via one-pot gelation with alginate and calcium montmorillonite

Nanocellulose hydrogels are promising to replace synthetic ones for direct ink writing (DIW)-based 3D printing biobased applications. However, less gelation strength and low solid content of the hydrogels limit the printability and subsequent fidelity of the dried object. Herein, a biobased, ternary DIW hydrogel ink is developed by one-pot gelation of cellulose nanofibrils (CNF), sodium alginate (SA), and Ca-montmorillonite (Ca-MMT) via in situ ionic crosslinking. The addition of Ca-MMT into CNF/SA formulation simultaneously increases the solid content and gelation strength of the hydrogel. The resultant hydrogels exhibit shape recovery after compression. The optimal CNF concentration in the hydrogel is 1.2 wt%, enabling the highest compressive mechanical performance of the scaffolds. A series of complex, customized shapes with different curvatures and three-dimensional structures (e.g., high-curvature letters, pyramids, human ears, etc.) can be printed with high fidelity before and after drying. This study opens an avenue on preparing nanocellulose-based DIW hydrogel inks using one-pot gelation of the components, which offers a solution to combine DIW-based 3D printing with biobased hydrogel inks, towards diverse biobased applications.

Valorization of Lactate Esters and Amides into Value-Added Biobased (Meth)acrylic Polymers

(Meth)acrylic polymers are massively produced due to their inherently attractive properties. However, the vast majority of these polymers are derived from fossil resources, which is not aligned with the tendency to reduce gas emissions. In this context, (meth)acrylic polymers derived from biomass (biobased polymers) are gaining momentum, as their application in different areas can not only stand the comparison but even surpass, in some cases, the performance of petroleum-derived ones. In this review, we highlight the design and synthesis of (meth)acrylic polymers derived from lactate esters (LEs) and lactate amides (LAs), both derived from lactic acid. While biobased polymers have been widely studied and reviewed, the poly(meth)acrylates with pendant LE and LA moieties evolved slowly until recently when significant achievements have been made. Hence, constraints and opportunities arising from previous research in this area are presented, focusing on the synthesis of well-defined polymers for the preparation of advanced materials.

Bioplastics: No solution to healthcare's plastic pollution problem

As Canadian policy-makers recognize the urgency for concerted actions to reduce plastics (e.g., Canada's involvement in the international plastics treaty negotiations, zero plastic waste strategy, and single-use plastics regulations), the healthcare sector must also consider a more sustainable plastics system. In this context, the potential for novel bioplastics to mitigate healthcare's substantial plastic waste problem must be carefully interrogated. Our analysis examines the complexities of bioplastics, highlighting the technical challenges of identifying legitimate sustainable alternatives, and the practical barriers for implementing bioplastics as substitutes for consumable plastics in healthcare. We focus on the Canadian healthcare sector and regulatory landscape with the insights gained being applicable to other sectors and countries. Given the limitations identified, the focus on reducing consumption should remain the priority.

Biomaterials with antifungal strategies to fight oral infections

Oral fungal infections pose a threat to human health and increase the economic burden of oral diseases by prolonging and complicating treatment. A cost-effective strategy is to try to prevent these infections from happening in the first place. With this purpose, biomaterials with antifungal properties are a crucial element to overcome fungal infections in the oral cavity. In this review, we go through different kinds of biomaterials and coatings that can be used to functionalize them. We also review their potential as a therapeutic approach in addition to prophylaxis, by going through traditional and alternative antifungal compounds, e.g., essential oils, that could be incorporated in them, to enhance their efficacy against fungal pathogens. We aim to highlight the potential of these technologies and propose questions that need to be addressed in prospective research. Finally, we intend to concatenate the key aspects and technologies on the use of biomaterials in oral health, to create an easy to find summary of the current state-of-the-art for researchers in the field.

Optical tuning of copolymer-in-oil tissue-mimicking materials for multispectral photoacoustic imaging

Objective. The availability of tissue-mimicking materials (TMMs) for manufacturing high-quality phantoms is crucial for standardization, evaluating novel quantitative approaches, and clinically translating new imaging modalities, such as photoacoustic imaging (PAI). Recently, a gel comprising the copolymer styrene-ethylene/butylene-styrene (SEBS) in mineral oil has shown significant potential as TMM due to its optical and acoustic properties akin to soft tissue. We propose using artists' oil-based inks dissolved and diluted in balsam turpentine to tune the optical properties.Approach. A TMM was fabricated by mixing a SEBS copolymer and mineral oil, supplemented with additives to tune its optical absorption and scattering properties independently. A systematic investigation of the tuning accuracies and relationships between concentrations of oil-based pigments and optical absorption properties of the TMM across visible and near-infrared wavelengths using collimated transmission spectroscopy was conducted. The photoacoustic spectrum of various oil-based inks was studied to analyze the effect of increasing concentration and depth.Main results. Artists' oil-based inks dissolved in turpentine proved effective as additives to tune the optical absorption properties of mineral oil SEBS-gel with high accuracy. The TMMs demonstrated long-term stability and suitability for producing phantoms with desired optical absorption properties for PAI studies.Significance. The findings, including tuning of optical absorption and spectral shape, suggest that this TMM facilitates the development of more sophisticated phantoms of arbitrary shapes. This approach holds promise for advancing the development of PAI, including investigation of the spectral coloring effect. In addition, it can potentially aid in the development and clinical translation of ultrasound optical tomography.

Wetting on silicone surfaces

Silicone is frequently used as a model system to investigate and tune wetting on soft materials. Silicone is biocompatible and shows excellent thermal, chemical, and UV stability. Moreover, the mechanical properties of the surface can be easily varied by several orders of magnitude in a controlled manner. Polydimethylsiloxane (PDMS) is a popular choice for coating applications such as lubrication, self-cleaning, and drag reduction, facilitated by low surface energy. Aiming to understand the underlying interactions and forces, motivated numerous and detailed investigations of the static and dynamic wetting behavior of drops on PDMS-based surfaces. Here, we recognize the three most prevalent PDMS surface variants, namely liquid-infused (SLIPS/LIS), elastomeric, and liquid-like (SOCAL) surfaces. To understand, optimize, and tune the wetting properties of these PDMS surfaces, we review and compare their similarities and differences by discussing (i) the chemical and molecular structure, and (ii) the static and dynamic wetting behavior. We also provide (iii) an overview of methods and techniques to characterize PDMS-based surfaces and their wetting behavior. The static and dynamic wetting ridge is given particular attention, as it dominates energy dissipation, adhesion, and friction of sliding drops and influences the durability of the surfaces. We also discuss special features such as cloaking and wetting-induced phase separation. Key challenges and opportunities of these three surface variants are outlined.

Modern advances in spinal cord regeneration: hydrogel combined with neural stem cells

Severe spinal cord injuries (SCI) lead to loss of functional activity of the body below the injury site, affect a person's ability to self-care and have a direct impact on performance. Due to the structural features and functional role of the spinal cord in the body, the consequences of SCI cannot be completely overcome at the expense of endogenous regenerative potential and, developing over time, lead to severe complications years after injury. Thus, the primary task of this type of injury treatment is to create artificial conditions for the regenerative growth of damaged nerve fibers through the area of the SCI. Solving this problem is possible using tissue neuroengineering involving the technology of replacing the natural tissue environment with synthetic matrices (for example, hydrogels) in combination with stem cells, in particular, neural/progenitor stem cells (NSPCs). This approach can provide maximum stimulation and support for the regenerative growth of axons of damaged neurons and their myelination. In this review, we consider the currently available options for improving the condition after SCI (use of NSC transplantation or/and replacement of the damaged area of the SCI with a matrix, specifically a hydrogel). We emphasise the expediency and effectiveness of the hydrogel matrix + NSCs complex system used for the reconstruction of spinal cord tissue after injury. Since such a complex approach (a combination of tissue engineering and cell therapy), in our opinion, allows not only to creation of conditions for supporting endogenous regeneration or mechanical reconstruction of the spinal cord, but also to strengthen endogenous regeneration, prevent the spread of the inflammatory process, and promote the restoration of lost reflex, motor and sensory functions of the injured area of spinal cord.

Biophysical studies of modified PVC sheet based on sunflower oil for antistatic and blood bags applications

In this work, the surface of polyvinyl chloride PVC sheet was modified by blending it with sunflower seed oil SSO to obtain PVC sheet/SSO films of ratios 100/0, 90/10, 80/20, 70/30, 60/40, and 50/50 (v/v)% using the solution casting method. Various techniques were used to characterize the prepared films, besides the use of hemolysis assays and blood clot formation tests. FTIR spectra revealed that there was a good interaction between the PVC sheet and the oil. The dielectric measurement indicated that SSO addition enhanced the dielectric properties of the sheet. The study of dielectric relaxation times confirmed the interaction between SSO and the sheet. DC conductivity increased to 6 × 10-6 S/m, so it could be applied in antistatic applications. Also, SSO addition increased the value of the thermal stability. According to SEM micrographs, the film was roughened at a ratio of 60/40 and smoothed out at 50/50. This behavior was confirmed with roughness and contact angle measurement results, in which the film of ratio 60/40 had the highest value equal to (72.03°) and then decreased at 50/50 to (59.62°). These results were confirmed by XRD measurement as the crystallinity increased at the film ratio of 60/40 and decreased again at 50/50. Also, the ratio of 60/40 demonstrated a large decrease in thrombus weights along with a slight increase in hemolysis, which is within the acceptable range and has a high degree of biocompatibility, so this concentration is recommended to be used in blood bags applications.

Structure, chemical modification, and functional applications of mucilage from Mimosa pudica seeds - A review

Mimosa pudica (MP) is an ornamental plant due to seismonastic movements that close leaves and fall petioles in response to touch, wind, light, heat, cold, and vibration. The seeds of MP secrete smart, biocompatible, and non-toxic mucilage that has captivated researchers due to its widespread use in various fields such as pharmaceuticals and biotechnology. The mucilage is responsive to pH, salt solutions, and solvents and acts as a binder in tablet formulations for targeted drug delivery. The mucilage is chemically modifiable via acetylation, succinylation, and graft polymerization. Chemically modified MP mucilage appeared supersorbent for heavy metal ion uptake. Nanoparticles synthesized using mucilage as a reducing and capping agent displayed significant antimicrobial and wound-healing potential. Crosslinking of mucilage using citric acid as a crosslinking agent offers a sustained release of drugs. The present review is aimed to discuss extraction optimization, structure, modification, and the stimuli-responsive nature of mucilage. The review article will cover the potential of mucilage as emulsifying, suspending, bio-adhesive, gelling, and thickening agent. The role of mucilage as a capping and reducing agent for nanoparticles will also be discussed.

Nylons with Applications in Energy Generators, 3D Printing and Biomedicine

Linear polyamides, known as nylons, are a class of synthetic polymers with a wide range of applications due to their outstanding properties, such as chemical and thermal resistance or mechanical strength. These polymers have been used in various fields: from common and domestic applications, such as socks and fishing nets, to industrial gears or water purification membranes. By their durability, flexibility and wear resistance, nylons are now being used in addictive manufacturing technology as a good material choice to produce sophisticated devices with precise and complex geometric shapes. Furthermore, the emergence of triboelectric nanogenerators and the development of biomaterials have highlighted the versatility and utility of these materials. Due to their ability to enhance triboelectric performance and the range of applications, nylons show a potential use as tribo-positive materials. Because of the easy control of their shape, they can be subsequently integrated into nanogenerators. The use of nylons has also extended into the field of biomaterials, where their biocompatibility, mechanical strength and versatility have paved the way for groundbreaking advances in medical devices as dental implants, catheters and non-absorbable surgical sutures. By means of 3D bioprinting, nylons have been used to develop scaffolds, joint implants and drug carriers with tailored properties for various biomedical applications. The present paper aims to collect evidence of these recently specific applications of nylons by reviewing the literature produced in recent decades, with a special focus on the newer technologies in the field of energy harvesting and biomedicine.

A novel nerol-segmented waterborne polyurethane coating for the prevention of dental erosion

Dental erosion is a common problem in dentistry, and it refers to the chronic pathological loss of dental hard tissues due to nonbacterially produced acids, primarily caused by the exposure of teeth to exogenous acids. Dietary factors play a pivotal part in the pathogenesis of dental erosion, with a high intake of acidic beverages leading to an increased prevalence of dental erosion in adolescents. Fluoride is mainly used in clinical practice to prevent dental erosion. However, long-term fluoride intake may lead to chronic fluorosis symptoms caused by fluoride overdose. Nano-coatings on dental surfaces have become a popular area of research in dental materials in recent years. The objective of this study was to develop a novel nerol-segmented waterborne polyurethane nano-coating to protect teeth from direct contact with an acidic environment and to provide a safe, effective method for preventing dental acid erosion.

Drug Integrating Amphiphilic Nano-Assemblies: 2. Spatiotemporal Distribution within Inflammation Sites

The need for chronic systemic immunosuppression, which is associated with unavoidable side-effects, greatly limits the applicability of allogeneic cell transplantation for regenerative medicine applications including pancreatic islet cell transplantation to restore insulin production in type 1 diabetes (T1D). Cell transplantation in confined sites enables the localized delivery of anti-inflammatory and immunomodulatory drugs to prevent graft loss by innate and adaptive immunity, providing an opportunity to achieve local effects while minimizing unwanted systemic side effects. Nanoparticles can provide the means to achieve the needed localized and sustained drug delivery either by graft targeting or co-implantation. Here, we evaluated the potential of our versatile platform of drug-integrating amphiphilic nanomaterial assemblies (DIANAs) for targeted drug delivery to an inflamed site model relevant for islet transplantation. We tested either passive targeting of intravenous administered spherical nanomicelles (nMIC; 20-25 nm diameter) or co-implantation of elongated nanofibrils (nFIB; 5 nm diameter and >1 μm length). To assess the ability of nMIC and nFIB to target an inflamed graft site, we used a lipophilic fluorescent cargo (DiD and DiR) and evaluated the in vivo biodistribution and cellular uptake in the graft site and other organs, including draining and non-draining lymph nodes, after systemic administration (nMIC) and/or graft co-transplantation (nFIB) in mice. Localized inflammation was generated either by using an LPS injection or by using biomaterial-coated islet-like bead implantation in the subcutaneous site. A cell transplant inflammation model was used as well to test nMIC- and nFIB-targeted biodistribution. We found that nMIC can reach the inflamed site after systemic administration, while nFIB remains localized for several days after co-implantation. We confirmed that DIANAs are taken up by different immune cell populations responsible for graft inflammation. Therefore, DIANA is a useful approach for targeted and/or localized delivery of immunomodulatory drugs to decrease innate and adaptive immune responses that cause graft loss after transplantation of therapeutic cells.

Techniques, applications and prospects of polysaccharide and protein based biopolymer coatings: A review

The growing relevance of sustainable materials has recently led to the exploration of naturally derived biopolymeric hydrogels as coating materials due to their biodegradability, biocompatibility, ease of fabrication and modification. Although many review articles exist on biopolymeric coatings, they mainly focus on a specific polysaccharide, protein biopolymer, or a particular application- biomedical engineering or food preservation. The current review first summarizes the commonly used polysaccharide and protein-based biopolymers like chitosan, alginate, carrageenan, pectin, cellulose, starch, pullulan, agarose and silk fibroin, gelatin, respectively, with a systematic description of the techniques widely used for physical coating on substrates. Then, broad applications of these biopolymeric coatings on various substrates in biomedical engineering- 3D scaffolds, biomedical implants, and nanoparticles are described in detail. It also entails the application of biopolymeric coatings for food preservation in the form of food packaging and edible coatings. A brief discussion on the newly discovered interest in exploring biopolymers for anticorrosive coating applications is also included. Finally, concluding remarks on the role of biopolymer microstructures in forming homogeneous coatings, prospective alternatives to the currently used biopolymers as coating material and the advent of computer-aided technologies to expedite experimental findings are presented.

A New Approach to Implant Stability Using a Flexible Synthetic Silicate-Additive Beta-Tricalcium Phosphate-Poly(D,L-lactide-co-caprolactone) Bone Graft: An In Vitro Study

The aim of this study was to evaluate the use of a flexible synthetic polymer bone graft to provide implant stability during implant placement in a dense cortical bone model. In the control group (Group 1), sockets were prepared on polyurethane blocks according to the standard implant socket drilling protocol; both oversizing and deepening were applied in Group 2; and only oversizing was applied in Group 3. In Groups 2 and 3, flexible synthetic polymer bone grafts were placed in the sockets prior to implant placement. The implants were placed at the bone level in all groups. The highest torque value obtained was recorded as the insertion torque. In this study, 75 implant sites were included across three groups. The torque values of the implants in the control group were significantly higher than those of the implants with the oversized and deepened sockets and the oversized-only sockets (p < 0.05; p < 0.01). The torque values of the implants with the oversized and deepened sockets were significantly higher than those of the implants with the oversized-only sockets (p < 0.01). In this study, a flexible synthetic polymer bone graft was shown to be effective in achieving implant stability in the management of implants where there has been a loss of primary stability.

Biomedical applications of stimuli-responsive "smart" interpenetrating polymer network hydrogels

In recent years, owing to the ongoing advancements in polymer materials, hydrogels have found increasing applications in the biomedical domain, notably in the realm of stimuli-responsive "smart" hydrogels. Nonetheless, conventional single-network stimuli-responsive "smart" hydrogels frequently exhibit deficiencies, including low mechanical strength, limited biocompatibility, and extended response times. In response, researchers have addressed these challenges by introducing a second network to create stimuli-responsive "smart" Interpenetrating Polymer Network (IPN) hydrogels. The mechanical strength of the material can be significantly improved due to the topological entanglement and physical interactions within the interpenetrating structure. Simultaneously, combining different network structures enhances the biocompatibility and stimulus responsiveness of the gel, endowing it with unique properties such as cell adhesion, conductivity, hemostasis/antioxidation, and color-changing capabilities. This article primarily aims to elucidate the stimulus-inducing factors in stimuli-responsive "smart" IPN hydrogels, the impact of the gels on cell behaviors and their biomedical application range. Additionally, we also offer an in-depth exposition of their categorization, mechanisms, performance characteristics, and related aspects. This review furnishes a comprehensive assessment and outlook for the advancement of stimuli-responsive "smart" IPN hydrogels within the biomedical arena. We believe that, as the biomedical field increasingly demands novel materials featuring improved mechanical properties, robust biocompatibility, and heightened stimulus responsiveness, stimuli-responsive "smart" IPN hydrogels will hold substantial promise for wide-ranging applications in this domain.

Biodegradable Polymers in Veterinary Medicine-A Review

During the past two decades, tremendous progress has been made in the development of biodegradable polymeric materials for various industrial applications, including human and veterinary medicine. They are promising alternatives to commonly used non-degradable polymers to combat the global plastic waste crisis. Among biodegradable polymers used, or potentially applicable to, veterinary medicine are natural polysaccharides, such as chitin, chitosan, and cellulose as well as various polyesters, including poly(ε-caprolactone), polylactic acid, poly(lactic-co-glycolic acid), and polyhydroxyalkanoates produced by bacteria. They can be used as implants, drug carriers, or biomaterials in tissue engineering and wound management. Their use in veterinary practice depends on their biocompatibility, inertness to living tissue, mechanical resistance, and sorption characteristics. They must be designed specifically to fit their purpose, whether it be: (1) facilitating new tissue growth and allowing for controlled interactions with living cells or cell-growth factors, (2) having mechanical properties that address functionality when applied as implants, or (3) having controlled degradability to deliver drugs to their targeted location when applied as drug-delivery vehicles. This paper aims to present recent developments in the research on biodegradable polymers in veterinary medicine and highlight the challenges and future perspectives in this area.

Obtaining Polyvinylpyrrolidone Fibers Using the Electroforming Method with the Inclusion of Microcrystalline High-Temperature Phosphates

The results of the synthesis of microcrystalline calcium phosphates such as hydroxoapatite, pyrophosphate, and tricalcium phosphate are presented herein. The influence of the addition of polyvinylpyrrolidone (PVP) on the phase characteristics of the resulting high-temperature ceramic sample is considered. The X-ray results show that hydroxyapatite (HAp) consists of a Ca5(PO4)3(OH) phase, while the sample with the addition of polyvinylpyrrolidone contains β-Ca3(PO4)2 (65.5%) and β-Ca2P2O7 (34.5%) phases calcium phosphates (CPs). IR spectroscopy was used to characterize the compositions of the samples. An important characteristic of the obtained samples is the elemental Ca/P ratio, which was determined via energy-dispersive analysis. The data obtained are consistent with the composition of dental enamel apatites, namely, in the CPs (1.27) and HAp (1.40). SEM was used to study the morphology of the surfaces of hydroxyapatite particles. Polyvinylpyrrolidone polymer fibers were obtained using the electroforming method with the inclusion of CPs in the composition. The fibers were oriented randomly, and nanoscale hydroxyapatite particles were incorporated into the fiber structure. Solubility data of the HAp, CPs, and Fibers in a physiological solution at room temperature and human body temperature were obtained. The solubility of the resulting HAp turned out to be higher than the solubility of the CPs. In turn, the concentration of Ca2+ in a physiological solution of PVP composite fibers with the inclusion of CPs was lower than that in powdered CPs.

Selected Mechanical and Rheological Properties of Medical Resin MED610 in PolyJet Matrix Three-Dimensional Printing Technology in Quality Aspects

In connection with the growing demand of the medical and medicine-related industry for materials exhibiting biocompatible properties used as part of three-dimensional (3D) printing additive technologies. The article presents research results concerning rheological and selected mechanical properties of a modern, photocurable MED610 resin, which is also used mainly in medicine, as well as dentistry. The article also shows extensive results of testing bending stress relaxation and creep, as well as the tensile strength of samples created with the PolyJet Matrix (PJM) technology. The authors used various sample types, including ones of unique shape and a hexagonal cellular structure. The analysis of the impact of element orientation on the working platform of the machine (3D printer) on the obtained test results (so-called printing direction-Pd) was also taken into account as a key technological parameter of the 3D printing process. Experimental rheological curves were matched with theoretical curves resulting from the application of a five-parameter Maxwell-Wiechert (M-W) model in the case of stress relaxation and a five-parameter Kelvin-Voigt model for creep. Very good matches were achieved, mean coefficients Chi2 = 0.0014 and R2 = 0.9956 for matching the five-parameter M-W model and mean coefficients Chi2 = 0.000006 and R2 = 0.9992 enable recommending the obtained results to be used for various engineering calculations, especially computer simulations. Moreover, the use of relaxation curves can significantly increase the construction capabilities within the design process, which includes the MED610 material.

Preventing Static Biofilm Formation of Staphylococcus aureus on Different Types of Surfaces Using Microbubbles

Bacterial fouling and biofilm formation on surfaces have been ongoing problems in real life as well as in the medical field. Different approaches have been taken to tackle the issues, from costly surface modification to antibiotic-delivering strategies. In this study, we examined the potential of using stabilized microbubbles (MBs) to shield against bacterial adhesion. Three types of surfaces were tested: hydrophilic glass (hydrophilic surface), neutral hydrophobic polystyrene (PS)-coated surfaces, and negatively charged hydrophobic octadecyltrichlorosilane (OTS)-coated surfaces. By evaluating the colony-forming unit (CFU) values from each surface, MBs stabilized by 0.05 mM SDS were shown to only produce significant reduction of Staphylococcus aureus adhesion on PS surfaces, up to 60.29 and 82.32% compared to no-MB PS surfaces, and no-MB uncoated surfaces, correspondingly, due to the appropriate size, stability, and negative charges of the MB shielding layer. On the other hand, OTS coatings had an intrinsic antiadhesion effect (69.83% compared to uncoated surface), given that the negatively charged OTS-aqueous interface or surface porosity nature of the coating prohibited the attachment of MBs, leading to the elimination of the antifouling effect of MBs. Ultimately, MBs gave better shielding results than surface modification when compared to uncoated surfaces and hence can be applied more widely.

Engineering Temperature-Responsive Polymer Nanoparticles that Load and Release Paclitaxel, a Low-Molecular-Weight Anticancer Drug

Poly(N-isopropylacrylamide) (pNIPAm) undergoes a hydrophilicity/hydrophobicity change around its lower critical solution temperature (LCST). Therefore, pNIPAm-based polymer nanoparticles (NPs) shrink above their LCST and swell below their LCST. Although temperature responsiveness is an important characteristic of synthetic polymers in drug and gene delivery, few studies have investigated the temperature-responsive catch and release of low-molecular-weight drugs (LMWDs) as their affinity to the target changes. Since LMWDs have only a few functional groups, preparation of NPs with high affinity for LMWDs is hard compared with that for peptides and proteins. However, LMWDs such as anticancer drugs often have a stronger effect than peptides and proteins. Therefore, the development of NPs that can load and release LMWDs is needed for drug delivery. Here, we engineered pNIPAm-based NPs that capture paclitaxel (PTX), an anticancer LMWD that inhibits microtubules, above their LCST and release it below their LCST. The swelling transition of the NPs depended on their hydrophobic monomer structure. NPs with swelling ratios (=NP size at 25 °C/NP size at 37 °C) exceeding 1.90 released captured PTX when cooled to below their LCST by changing the affinity for PTX. On the other hand, NPs with a swelling ratio of only 1.14 released melittin. Therefore, optimizing the functional monomers of temperature-responsive NPs is essential for the catch and release of the target in a temperature-dependent manner. These results can guide the design of stimuli-responsive polymers that catch and release their target molecules.

Cross-Linked Alginate Dialdehyde/Chitosan Hydrogel Encompassing Curcumin-Loaded Bilosomes for Enhanced Wound Healing Activity

The current study aimed to fabricate curcumin-loaded bilosomal hydrogel for topical wound healing purposes, hence alleviating the poor aqueous solubility and low oral bioavailability of curcumin. Bilosomes were fabricated via the thin film hydration technique using cholesterol, Span® 60, and two different types of bile salts (sodium deoxycholate or sodium cholate). Bilosomes were verified for their particle size (PS), polydispersity index (PDI), zeta potential (ZP), entrapment efficiency (EE%), and in vitro drug release besides their morphological features. The optimum formulation was composed of cholesterol/Span® 60 (molar ratio 1:10 w/w) and 5 mg of sodium deoxycholate. This optimum formulation was composed of a PS of 246.25 ± 11.85 nm, PDI of 0.339 ± 0.030, ZP of -36.75 ± 0.14 mv, EE% of 93.32% ± 0.40, and the highest percent of drug released over three days (96.23% ± 0.02). The optimum bilosomal formulation was loaded into alginate dialdehyde/chitosan hydrogel cross-linked with calcium chloride. The loaded hydrogel was tested for its water uptake capacity, in vitro drug release, and in vivo studies on male Albino rats. The results showed that the loaded hydrogel possessed a high-water uptake percent at the four-week time point (729.50% ± 43.13) before it started to disintegrate gradually; in addition, it showed sustained drug release for five days (≈100%). In vivo animal testing and histopathological studies supported the superiority of the curcumin-loaded bilosomal hydrogel in wound healing compared to the curcumin dispersion and plain hydrogel, where there was a complete wound closure attained after the three-week period with a proper healing mechanism. Finally, it was concluded that curcumin-loaded bilosomal hydrogel offered a robust, efficient, and user-friendly dosage form for wound healing.

Strength properties and ability to dissipate mechanical energy of biopolypropylene basalt/cellulose composites with the addition of antibacterial turmeric

The aim of this study was to evaluate the possibility of producing novel reinforced biocomposites based on polypropylene produced from biomass with the addition of antibacterial turmeric as a natural antibacterial agent for the manufacturing of orthoses and other small external medical equipment. Six hybrid composites containing 5-15% basalt fibers, 5-15% microcellulose fibers, 2% turmeric powder and 2% anhydride maleic compatibilizer were produced on a biobased polypropylene matrix by injection molding. The basic strength properties were determined in a static tensile, bending and impact test. The low-cycle dynamic test was carried out to determine changes in dissipation energy and the development of relaxation processes. In order to assess the microstructure of the composites, SEM micrographs were taken after the tensile test. The obtained results confirm that it was possible to produce functional biocomposites based on biopolypropylene with the addition of basalt and lignocellulosic fibers modified with natural antibacterial turmeric. Based on the results of strength properties tests, it can be seen that the addition of basalt fibers increases strength and stiffness, while microcellulose particles reduce the ability to dissipate mechanical energy, and in both cases water has a plasticizing effect on the produced composites. The addition of fibers increases the flexural modulus by 39-196% and is higher the higher the fiber content. The most promising seem to be hybrid composites with a balanced proportion of 10:10 and 15:15 basalt and EFC fibers, which are characterized by 20% higher strength and almost two and a half times higher stiffness than neat polypropylene.

Mechanical and antibacterial properties of hybrid polymers composite reinforcement for biomedical applications

This research investigates the biocompatibility, mechanical strength, and tribological properties of a hybrid composite material composed of high-density polyethylene (HDPE), hydroxyapatite (HAp), and titanium dioxide nanoparticles (Ti O 2 ). The study explores the microstructural characteristics of the composite material using scanning electron microscopy (SEM), transmission electron microscopy (TEM), and X-ray diffraction (XRD). Samples of HDPE-30%HAp with varying concentrations of Ti O 2 (5, 10, 15, and 20%) were prepared and extruded using a twin-screw machine. The hybrid composite materials underwent mechanical tests (tensile, flexural, and hardness), tribological tests (friction and wear rate), and antibacterial tests (resistance to Escherichia coli and Staphylococcus aureus bacteria). The results indicate that the optimal hybrid composite sample was HDPE-30%HAP-10% Ti O 2 , which demonstrated excellent mechanical properties (maximum tensile strength of 25.93 MPa and young modulus of 480 MPa) and a low coefficient of friction (COF∼ 0.07) while achieving high wear resistance (wear rate in the order of 10 - 4   m m 3 N - 1  m - 1 ). The study shows that the improvement in mechanical properties results in a corresponding improvement in tribological properties. The antibacterial tests revealed that the hybrid composite material exhibited resistance to E. coli and S. aureus bacteria. The findings of this study suggest that the HDPE-30%HAP-10% Ti O 2 composite is a promising material for use in biomedical applications due to its excellent biocompatibility and desirable mechanical and tribological properties. The study demonstrates the potential of reinforced hybrid composite materials in overcoming the disadvantages of monolithic and hybrid micro-composites and highlights the importance of investigating the microstructural, tribological, and mechanical strength characteristics of composite materials for biomedical applications.

Long term observation of de novo adipogenesis using novel bioabsorbable implants with larger size in a porcine model

Introduction

The regeneration of adipose tissue in patients after breast cancer surgery would be desirable without the use of growth factors or cells to avoid potential recurrence and metastasis. We reported that prolate spheroidal-shaped poly-L-lactic acid (PLLA) mesh implants of approximately 18-mm polar diameter and 7.5-mm greatest equatorial diameter containing collagen sponge (CS) would be replaced by regenerated adipose tissue after implantation, thereby suggesting an innovative method for breast reconstruction. Our study aimed to evaluate the adipose tissue regeneration ability of implant aggregates in a porcine model.

Methods

We prepared implant aggregates consisting of thirty PLLA mesh implants containing CS packed in a woven poly (glycolic acid) bag. The implant aggregates were inserted under the mammary glands in the porcine abdomen for a year. Single and double groups were classified by inserting either one or two implant aggregates on each side of the abdomen, respectively.

Results

In both groups, the volume of the implant aggregates decreased over time, and the formation of adipose tissue peaked between 6 and 9 months. Histologically, the formation of adipose tissue was confirmed in the area that was in contact with native adipose tissue.

Conclusions

Our implant aggregates could induce the autologous adipose tissue after long term implantation in vivo, without the use of any growth factor or cell treatment, presenting a potential novel method of breast reconstruction.

From Palm Leaves to Thermoplastic Polyurethanes-The History of Vascular Catheter Development and Use

Vascular catheterization procedures are performed on millions of patients in the United States annually. Diagnostic and therapeutic, these procedures allow for the detection and treatment of diseased vessels. The use of catheters, however, is no new phenomenon. Ancient Egyptians, Greeks, and Romans constructed tubes from hollow reeds and palm leaves to be tunneled through the vasculature of cadavers to study cardiovascular system function, while eighteenth century English physiologist Stephen Hales used a brass pipe cannula to perform the first central vein catheterization on a horse. In 1963, American surgeon Thomas Fogarty developed a balloon embolectomy catheter, while in 1974, German cardiologist Andreas Grüntzig developed a more refined angioplasty catheter using polyvinyl chloride with improved rigidity. Vascular catheter material has since continued to evolve and is tailored to the specific needs of the procedure but would not have been possible without its rich and diverse history of development.

Development of Plum Seed-Derived Carboxymethylcellulose Bioink for 3D Bioprinting

Three-dimensional bioprinting represents an innovative platform for fabricating intricate, three-dimensional (3D) tissue structures that closely resemble natural tissues. The development of hybrid bioinks is an actionable strategy for integrating desirable characteristics of components. In this study, cellulose recovered from plum seed was processed to synthesize carboxymethyl cellulose (CMC) for 3D bioprinting. The plum seeds were initially subjected to α-cellulose recovery, followed by the synthesis and characterization of plum seed-derived carboxymethyl cellulose (PCMC). Then, hybrid bioinks composed of PCMC and sodium alginate were fabricated, and their suitability for extrusion-based bioprinting was explored. The PCMC bioinks exhibit a remarkable shear-thinning property, enabling effortless extrusion through the nozzle and maintaining excellent initial shape fidelity. This bioink was then used to print muscle-mimetic 3D structures containing C2C12 cells. Subsequently, the cytotoxicity of PCMC was evaluated at different concentrations to determine the maximum acceptable concentration. As a result, cytotoxicity was not observed in hydrogels containing a suitable concentration of PCMC. Cell viability was also evaluated after printing PCMC-containing bioinks, and it was observed that the bioprinting process caused minimal damage to the cells. This suggests that PCMC/alginate hybrid bioink can be used as a very attractive material for bioprinting applications.

Controlled swelling of biomaterial devices for improved antifouling polymer coatings

Nonspecific interactions between cells and implantable elastomers often leads to failure modes for devices such as catheters, cosmetic and reconstructive implants, and sensors. To reduce these interactions, device surfaces can be coated with hydrophilic polymers, where greater polymer density enhances antifouling properties. Although graft-from coating techniques result in higher density polymer films and lower fouling in controlled settings, simpler graft-to methods show similar results on complex implanted devices, despite limited density. To address the need for improved graft-to methods, we developed Graft then shrink (GtS) where elastomeric materials are temporarily swollen during polymer grafting. Herein, we demonstrate a graft-to based method for poly(oligo(ethylene glycol) methyl ether methacrylate) (pOEGMA) on swollen silicone, GtS, that enhances grafted polymer content and fouling resistance. Total grafted polymer content of pOEGMA on toluene swollen silicone increased over ~ 13 × compared to non-swollen controls, dependent on the degree of silicone swelling. Increases in total grafted polymer within the top 200 µm of the material led to bacterial and mammalian cell adhesion reductions of 75% and 91% respectively, compared to Shrink then Graft (StG) antifouling polymer coated controls. GtS allows for the simple 3D coating of swellable elastomers (e.g., silicone medical devices) with improved antifouling pOEGMA coatings.

Development of Silk Fibroin-Based Non-Crosslinking Thermosensitive Bioinks for 3D Bioprinting

Three-dimensional (3D) bioprinting holds great promise for tissue engineering, allowing cells to thrive in a 3D environment. However, the applicability of natural polymers such as silk fibroin (SF) in 3D bioprinting faces hurdles due to limited mechanical strength and printability. SF, derived from the silkworm Bombyx mori, is emerging as a potential bioink due to its inherent physical gelling properties. However, research on inducing thermosensitive behavior in SF-based bioinks and tailoring their mechanical properties to specific tissue requirements is notably lacking. This study addresses these gaps through the development of silk fibroin-based thermosensitive bioinks (SF-TPBs). Precise modulation of gelation time and mechanical robustness is achieved by manipulating glycerol content without recourse to cross-linkers. Chemical analysis confirms β-sheet conformation in SF-TPBs independent of glycerol concentration. Increased glycerol content improves gelation kinetics and results in rheological properties suitable for 3D printing. Overall, SF-TPBs offer promising prospects for realizing the potential of 3D bioprinting using natural polymers.

Surface Modification of Ti6Al4V ELI Titanium Alloy by Poly(ethylene-alt-maleic anhydride) and Risedronate Sodium

With the simultaneous increase in the number of endoprostheses being performed, advances in the field of biomaterials are becoming apparent-whereby the materials and technologies used to construct implants clearly improve the implants' quality and, ultimately, the life of the patient after surgery. The aim of this study was to modify the titanium alloy Ti6Al4V ELI used in the construction of hip joint endoprostheses. This is why the continuous development of biomaterials is so important. This paper presents the results of research for a new application of polymer poly(ethylene-alt-maleic anhydride) as a drug release layer, placed on the surface of a titanium alloy. The obtained layers were analyzed using Raman spectroscopy (spectra and maps), Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (spectra and maps), contact angle measurements as well as scanning electron microscopy and energy dispersive spectroscopy imaging and topography analysis. The results confirmed that the polymer layer obtained on the plate surface after the alkali heat treatment process is much better-it binds much more polymer and thus the applied drug. In addition, a longer and more gradual release of the drug was observed for the alkali heat treatment modification than for H2O2 solution.

Monitoring the macrophage response towards biomaterial implants using label-free imaging

Understanding the immune system's foreign body response (FBR) is essential when developing and validating a biomaterial. Macrophage activation and proliferation are critical events in FBR that can determine the material's biocompatibility and fate in vivo. In this study, two different macro-encapsulation pouches intended for pancreatic islet transplantation were implanted into streptozotocin-induced diabetes rat models for 15 days. Post-explantation, the fibrotic capsules were analyzed by standard immunohistochemistry as well as non-invasive Raman microspectroscopy to determine the degree of FBR induced by both materials. The potential of Raman microspectroscopy to discern different processes of FBR was investigated and it was shown that Raman microspectroscopy is capable of targeting ECM components of the fibrotic capsule as well as pro and anti-inflammatory macrophage activation states, in a molecular-sensitive and marker-independent manner. In combination with multivariate analysis, spectral shifts reflecting conformational differences in Col I were identified and allowed to discriminate fibrotic and native interstitial connective tissue fibers. Moreover, spectral signatures retrieved from nuclei demonstrated changes in methylation states of nucleic acids in M1 and M2 phenotypes, relevant as indicator for fibrosis progression. This study could successfully implement Raman microspectroscopy as complementary tool to study in vivo immune-compatibility providing insightful information of FBR of biomaterials and medical devices, post-implantation.

Polymeric biomaterials for wound healing

Skin indicates a person's state of health and is so important that it influences a person's emotional and psychological behavior. In this context, the effective treatment of wounds is a major concern, since several conventional wound healing materials have not been able to provide adequate healing, often leading to scar formation. Hence, the development of innovative biomaterials for wound healing is essential. Natural and synthetic polymers are used extensively for wound dressings and scaffold production. Both natural and synthetic polymers have beneficial properties and limitations, so they are often used in combination to overcome overcome their individual limitations. The use of different polymers in the production of biomaterials has proven to be a promising alternative for the treatment of wounds, as their capacity to accelerate the healing process has been demonstrated in many studies. Thus, this work focuses on describing several currently commercially available solutions used for the management of skin wounds, such as polymeric biomaterials for skin substitutes. New directions, strategies, and innovative technologies for the design of polymeric biomaterials are also addressed, providing solutions for deep burns, personalized care and faster healing.

Polysaccharides-Naturally Occurring Immune Modulators

The prevention of disease and infection requires immune systems that operate effectively. This is accomplished by the elimination of infections and abnormal cells. Immune or biological therapy treats disease by either stimulating or inhibiting the immune system, dependent upon the circumstances. In plants, animals, and microbes, polysaccharides are abundant biomacromolecules. Due to the intricacy of their structure, polysaccharides may interact with and impact the immune response; hence, they play a crucial role in the treatment of several human illnesses. There is an urgent need for the identification of natural biomolecules that may prevent infection and treat chronic disease. This article addresses some of the naturally occurring polysaccharides of known therapeutic potential that have already been identified. This article also discusses extraction methods and immunological modulatory capabilities.

Azospirillum brasilense AbV5/6 encapsulation in dual-crosslinked beads based on cationic starch

The main challenge of agriculture is feeding the growing population and at the same time providing environmental sustainability. Using Azospirillum brasilense as a biofertilizer has proved to be a promising solution. However, its prevalence in soil has not been efficient due to biotic and abiotic stresses. Thus, to overcome this drawback, we encapsulated the A. brasilense AbV5 and AbV6 strains in a dual-crosslinked bead based on cationic starch. The starch was previously modified with ethylenediamine by an alkylation approach. Then, the beads were obtained by a dripping technique, crosslinking sodium tripolyphosphate with a blend containing starch, cationic starch, and chitosan. The AbV5/6 strains were encapsulated into the hydrogel beads by a swelling diffusion method followed by desiccation. Plants treated with encapsulated AbV5/6 cells showed an increase in the root length by 19 %, shoot fresh weight by 17 %, and the content of chlorophyll b by 71 %. The encapsulation of AbV5/6 strains showed to keep A. brasilense viability for at least 60 days and efficiency to promote maize growth.

The Clinical Use of Osteobiologic and Metallic Biomaterials in Orthopedic Surgery: The Present and the Future

As the area and range of surgical treatments in the orthopedic field have expanded, the development of biomaterials used for these treatments has also advanced. Biomaterials have osteobiologic properties, including osteogenicity, osteoconduction, and osteoinduction. Natural polymers, synthetic polymers, ceramics, and allograft-based substitutes can all be classified as biomaterials. Metallic implants are first-generation biomaterials that continue to be used and are constantly evolving. Metallic implants can be made from pure metals, such as cobalt, nickel, iron, or titanium, or from alloys, such as stainless steel, cobalt-based alloys, or titanium-based alloys. This review describes the fundamental characteristics of metals and biomaterials used in the orthopedic field and new developments in nanotechnology and 3D-printing technology. This overview discusses the biomaterials that clinicians commonly use. A complementary relationship between doctors and biomaterial scientists is likely to be necessary in the future.

Artificial Muscles and Soft Robotic Devices for Treatment of End-Stage Heart Failure

Medical soft robotics constitutes a rapidly developing field in the treatment of cardiovascular diseases, with a promising future for millions of patients suffering from heart failure worldwide. Herein, the present state and future direction of artificial muscle-based soft robotic biomedical devices in supporting the inotropic function of the heart are reviewed, focusing on the emerging electrothermally artificial heart muscles (AHMs). Artificial muscle powered soft robotic devices can mimic the action of complex biological systems such as heart compression and twisting. These artificial muscles possess the ability to undergo complex deformations, aiding cardiac function while maintaining a limited weight and use of space. Two very promising candidates for artificial muscles are electrothermally actuated AHMs and biohybrid actuators using living cells or tissue embedded with artificial structures. Electrothermally actuated AHMs have demonstrated superior force generation while creating the prospect for fully soft robotic actuated ventricular assist devices. This review will critically analyze the limitations of currently available devices and discuss opportunities and directions for future research. Last, the properties of the cardiac muscle are reviewed and compared with those of different materials suitable for mechanical cardiac compression.

Microbial Exopolysaccharide Composites in Biomedicine and Healthcare: Trends and Advances

Microbial exopolysaccharides (EPSs), e.g., xanthan, dextran, gellan, curdlan, etc., have significant applications in several industries (pharma, food, textiles, petroleum, etc.) due to their biocompatibility, nontoxicity, and functional characteristics. However, biodegradability, poor cell adhesion, mineralization, and lower enzyme activity are some other factors that might hinder commercial applications in healthcare practices. Some EPSs lack biological activities that make them prone to degradation in ex vivo, as well as in vivo environments. The blending of EPSs with other natural and synthetic polymers can improve the structural, functional, and physiological characteristics, and make the composites suitable for a diverse range of applications. In comparison to EPS, composites have more mechanical strength, porosity, and stress-bearing capacity, along with a higher cell adhesion rate, and mineralization that is required for tissue engineering. Composites have a better possibility for biomedical and healthcare applications and are used for 2D and 3D scaffold fabrication, drug carrying and delivery, wound healing, tissue regeneration, and engineering. However, the commercialization of these products still needs in-depth research, considering commercial aspects such as stability within ex vivo and in vivo environments, the presence of biological fluids and enzymes, degradation profile, and interaction within living systems. The opportunities and potential applications are diverse, but more elaborative research is needed to address the challenges. In the current article, efforts have been made to summarize the recent advancements in applications of exopolysaccharide composites with natural and synthetic components, with special consideration of pharma and healthcare applications.

Studies on PVP-Based Hydrogel Polymers as Dressing Materials with Prolonged Anticancer Drug Delivery Function

Tamoxifen is a well-known active substance with anticancer activity. Currently, many investigations are performed on the development of carriers that provide its effective delivery. Particular attention is directed toward the formation of cyclodextrin-drug complexes to provide prolonged drug delivery. According to our knowledge, carriers in the form of polyvinylpyrrolidone (PVP)/gelatin-based hydrogels incorporated with β-cyclodextrin-tamoxifen complexes and additionally modified with nanogold have not been presented in the literature. In this work, two series of these materials have been synthesized-with tamoxifen and with its complex with β-cyclodextrin. The process of obtaining drug carrier systems consisted of several stages. Firstly, the nanogold suspension was obtained. Next, the hydrogels were prepared via photopolymerization. The size, dispersity and optical properties of nanogold as well as the swelling properties of hydrogels, their behavior in simulated physiological liquids and the impact of these liquids on their chemical structure were verified. The release profiles of tamoxifen from composites were also determined. The developed materials showed swelling capacity, stability in tested environments that did not affect their structure, and the ability to release drugs, while the release process was much more effective in acidic conditions than in alkaline ones. This is a benefit considering their use for anticancer drug delivery, due to the fact that near cancer cells, there is an acidic environment. In the case of the composites containing the drug-β-cyclodextrin complex, a prolonged release process was achieved compared to the drug release from materials with unbound tamoxifen. In terms of the properties and the composition, the developed materials show a great application potential as drug carriers, in particular as carriers of anticancer drugs such as tamoxifen.

Natural rubber latex films with effective growth inhibition against S. aureus via surface conjugated gentamicin

Hospital-associated infections and related complications are of extreme concern in the healthcare sector since biofilms generated over material surfaces not only create turbulence in the healthcare practices followed but also ruin the device performance, and increased medication, leading to significant chances of drug resistance. Natural rubber latex (NRL) being the first choice for the manufacture of several conventional biomedical devices, it is essential to ensure the surfaces of the same are inherently inactive against most microorganisms. This study presents NRL film surface conjugated with a well-known antibiotic, gentamicin through an amide linkage to generate antibacterial activity to the surface with a significant growth inhibition rate, especially against Staphylococcus aureus. The NRL films were surface-oxidized under controlled acidic conditions to generate carboxyl groups exploring the unsaturation of the base monomer unit. The carboxyl group reacts with the amine groups of gentamicin facilitating its surface conjugation. The surface anchoring was authenticated by FTIR-ATR complimented further by contact angle measurement as a function of hydrophilicity and elemental analysis by EDX spectroscopy. The antibacterial efficacy of modified NRL films was evaluated using antibacterial drop test and the results indicated a substantial growth inhibition rate (>60%) against Pseudomonas aeruginosa and Staphylococcus aureus. The study could be further optimized and proposed as a viable route for the conjugation of active molecules over inert polymer molecules.

Preparation and Surface Characterization of Chitosan-Based Coatings for PET Materials

Poly(ethylene terephthalate)-PET-is one of the most frequently used polymers in biomedical applications. Due to chemical inertness, PET surface modification is necessary to gain specific properties, making the polymer biocompatible. The aim of this paper is to characterize the multi-component films containing chitosan (Ch), phospholipid 1,2-dioleoyl-sn-glycero-3-phosphocholine (DOPC), immunosuppressant cyclosporine A (CsA) and/or antioxidant lauryl gallate (LG) which can be utilized as a very attractive material for developing the PET coatings. Chitosan was employed owing to its antibacterial activity and also its ability to promote cell adhesion and proliferation favorable for tissue engineering and regeneration purposes. Moreover, the Ch film can be additionally modified with other substances of biological importance (DOPC, CsA and LG). The layers of varying compositions were prepared using the Langmuir-Blodgett (LB) technique on the air plasma-activated PET support. Then their nanostructure, molecular distribution, surface chemistry and wettability were determined by atomic force microscopy (AFM), time-of-flight secondary ion mass spectrometry (TOF-SIMS), X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS), contact angle (CA) measurements and the surface free energy and its components' determination, respectively. The obtained results show clearly the dependence of the surface properties of the films on the molar ratio of components and allow for a better understanding of the coating organization and mechanisms of interactions at the molecular level both inside the films and between the films and the polar/apolar liquids imitating the environment of different properties. The organized layers of this type can be helpful in gaining control over the surface properties of the biomaterial, thus getting rid of the limitations in favor of increased biocompatibility. This is a good basis for further investigations on the correlation of the immune system response to the presence of biomaterial and its physicochemical properties.

Metatarsal bone model production using 3D printing and comparison of material properties with results obtained from CT-based modeling and real bone

Using a real bone is very important to find correct results for the biomechanical studies. However, it is very difficult to find the real bone and sometimes artificial bone models can be preferred instead of real bone. The aim of this study is to obtain an easy-to-manufacture, easy-to-customize and inexpensive method the artificial first metatarsal bone model that is similar material properties with the real bone. 3D printer technology was used to produce the artificial bone model. First metatarsal bone was modeled using MIMICS software to produce and determined the mechanical properties. The bone mechanical properties were calculated via MIMICS software using computer tomography images. 3D bone models were produced in different infill density and infill pattern to determine the real bone mechanical properties using 3D printer. The infill density of the bone model was adjusted as 20%, 40%, and 60%. Five different infill pattern types were used as grid, cubic, triangle, trihexagon, and gyroid. The produced models were subjected to torsional test and the elasticity modulus of all models were obtained. The results of the elasticity modulus of all produced (artificial) and modeled (calculated) bone were compared and the optimum bone model was obtained. The optimum infill density and infill pattern was determined as 40% and trihexagon, respectively.

Natural Polymers and Cosmeceuticals for a Healthy and Circular Life: The Examples of Chitin, Chitosan, and Lignin

The present review considers the design and introduction of new cosmeceuticals in the market, based on natural polymers and active molecules extracted from biomass, in a biomimetic strategy, starting with a consideration of the biochemical mechanisms, followed by natural precision biopolymer production. After introducing the contest of nanobiotechnology in relationship with its applicability for skin contact products and classifying the currently available sustainable polymers, some widely selected abundant biopolymers (chitin, chitosan, and lignin), showing specific functionalities (anti-microbial, anti-oxidant, anti-inflammatory, etc.), are described, especially considering the possibility to combine them in nanostructured tissues, powders, and coatings for producing new cosmeceuticals, but with potentialities in other sectors, such as biomedical, personal care, and packaging sectors. After observing the general increase in market wellness and beauty forecasts over the next few years, parallelisms between nano and macro scales have suggested that nanobiotechnology application expresses the necessity to follow a better way of producing, selecting, and consuming goods that will help to transform the actual linear economy in a circular economy, based on redesigning, reducing, recycling, and reusing.

Deposition of Chitosan on Plasma-Treated Polymers-A Review

Materials for biomedical applications often need to be coated to enhance their performance, such as their biocompatibility, antibacterial, antioxidant, and anti-inflammatory properties, or to assist the regeneration process and influence cell adhesion. Among naturally available substances, chitosan meets the above criteria. Most synthetic polymer materials do not enable the immobilization of the chitosan film. Therefore, their surface should be altered to ensure the interaction between the surface functional groups and the amino or hydroxyl groups in the chitosan chain. Plasma treatment can provide an effective solution to this problem. This work aims to review plasma methods for surface modification of polymers for improved chitosan immobilization. The obtained surface finish is explained in view of the different mechanisms involved in treating polymers with reactive plasma species. The reviewed literature showed that researchers usually use two different approaches: direct immobilization of chitosan on the plasma-treated surface or indirect immobilization by additional chemistry and coupling agents, which are also reviewed. Although plasma treatment leads to remarkably improved surface wettability, this was not the case for chitosan-coated samples, where a wide range of wettability was reported ranging from almost superhydrophilic to hydrophobic, which may have a negative effect on the formation of chitosan-based hydrogels.

Recent Advancements in Polyurethane-based Tissue Engineering

In tissue engineering, polyurethane-based implants have gained significant traction because of their high compatibility and inertness. The implants therefore show fewer side effects and lasts longer. Also, the mechanical properties can be tuned and morphed into a particular shape, owing to which polyurethanes show immense versatility. In the last 3 years, scientists have devised methods to enhance the strength of and induce dynamic properties in polyurethanes, and these developments offer an immense opportunity to use them in tissue engineering. The focus of this review is on applications of polyurethane implants for biomedical application with detailed analysis of hard tissue implants like bone tissues and soft tissues like cartilage, muscles, skeletal tissues, and blood vessels. The synthetic routes for the preparation of scaffolds have been discussed to gain a better understanding of the issues that arise regarding toxicity. The focus here is also on concerns regarding the biocompatibility of the implants, given that the precursors and byproducts are poisonous.

Drug Delivery Systems in Regenerative Medicine: An Updated Review

Modern drug discovery methods led to evolving new agents with significant therapeutic potential. However, their properties, such as solubility and administration-related challenges, may hinder their benefits. Moreover, advances in biotechnology resulted in the development of a new generation of molecules with a short half-life that necessitates frequent administration. In this context, controlled release systems are required to enhance treatment efficacy and improve patient compliance. Innovative drug delivery systems are promising tools that protect therapeutic proteins and peptides against proteolytic degradation where controlled delivery is achievable. The present review provides an overview of different approaches used for drug delivery.

A DR/NIR Hybrid Polymeric Tool for Functional Bio-Coatings: Theoretical Study, Cytotoxicity, and Antimicrobial Activity

Among modern biomaterials, hybrid tools containing an organic component and a metal cation are recognized as added value, and, for many advanced biomedical applications, synthetic polymers are used as thin protective/functional coatings for medical or prosthetic devices and implants. These materials require specific non-degradability, biocompatibility, antimicrobial, and antiproliferative properties to address safety aspects concerning their use in medicine. Moreover, bioimaging monitoring of the biomedical device and/or implant through biological tissues is a desirable ability. This article reports a novel hybrid metallopolymer obtained by grafting zinc-coordinated fragments to an organic polymeric matrix. This hybrid polymer, owing to its relevant emission in the deep red to near-infrared (DR/NIR) region, is monitorable; therefore, it represents a potential material for biomedical coating. Furthermore, it shows good biocompatibility and adhesion properties and excellent stability in slightly acidic/basic water solutions. Finally, in contact with the superficial layers of human skin, it shows antimicrobial properties against Staphylococcus aureus bacterial strains.

Synthesis and characterization of UV curable biocompatible hydrophilic copolymers containing siloxane units

Tissues are highly three-dimensional structure complexes composed of different cell types and their interactions. One of the main challenges in tissue engineering is the inability to produce large, highly perfused scaffolds in which cells can grow at a high cell density and viability. Poly(dimethyl siloxane) (PDMS) is used as a flexible, biocompatible cell culture substrate with tunable mechanical properties. However, its fragility and hydrophobicity still pose a challenge. Here, we present a new strategy for the three-step one-pot synthesis of novel biocompatible hydrophilic copolymers containing siloxane units. In the first step, free radical copolymerization of acrylic acid (AA), butyl methacrylate (BMA), and 2-hydroxyethyl methacrylate (HEMA) was carried out in dioxane (DO) solution in the presence of 2,2'-azodiisobutyronitrile (AIBN). In the second step, the copolymers were modified with diepoxypropoxypropyl-terminated polydimethylsiloxane (DE-PDMS), and in the third step, the copolymers were additionally modified with glycidyl methacrylate (GMA). The modified copolymers were characterized by FTIR, NMR spectroscopy and elemental analysis. Films of modified copolymers were prepared by UV curing. SEM studies revealed microphase separated morphology with distribution of PDMS domains. The mechanical properties of the films depended on the amount of incorporated silicone modifier. The films were more hydrophilic than PDMS films. All novel copolymers showed high biocompatibility.

Global research on dental polymers and their application: A bibliometric analysis and knowledge mapping

Purpose

The main objective of the current study was to evaluate the top-cited articles, countries, journals, authors, and papers published related to dental polymers and their application. Research articles published from 1962 to 2021 on dental polymers and their application were identified using the Scopus database.

Methodology

Bibliographical data related to the abstract, citations, keywords, and other relevant information was extracted using different combinations of keywords. Further evaluation and visualization of the selected data were performed with the help of various tools, including MS Excel, Microsoft Word, Google open refine, Biblioshiny, BibExcel, and VOS viewer. An initial search revealed 351 documents, of which 327 were chosen for further analysis.

Results

A substantial increase in the number of publications related to this domain was observed. The United States was the most prolific country, while the Aristotle University of Thessaloniki from Greece was identified as the leading institute.

Conclusion

This bibliometric analysis can guide researchers, funding agencies, industry, and institutions.
