A new insight into the straw decomposition associated with minerals: Promoting straw humification and Cd immobilization

Organic matter (OM) derived from the decomposition of crop residues plays a key role as a sorbent for cadmium (Cd) immobilization. Few studies have explored the straw decomposition processes with the presence of minerals, and the effect of newly generated organo-mineral complexes on heavy metal adsorption. In this study, we investigated the variations in structure and composition during the rice straw decomposition with or without minerals (goethite and kaolinite), as well as the adsorption behavior and mechanisms by which straw decomposition affects Cd immobilization. The degree of humification of extracted straw organic matter was assessed using excitation-emission matrix (EEM) fluorescence and Ultraviolet-visible spectroscopy (UV-vis), while employing FTIR spectroscopy and XPS to characterize the adsorption mechanisms. The spectra analysis revealed the enrichment of highly aromatic and hydrophobic components, indicating that the degree of straw decomposition and humification were further intensified during incubation. Additionally, the existence of goethite (SG) accelerated the humification of OM. Sorption experiments revealed that the straw humification increased Cd adsorption capacity. Notably, SG exhibited significantly higher adsorption performance compared to the organic matter without minerals (RS) and the existence of kaolinite (SK). Further analysis using FT-IR spectroscopy and XPS verified that the primary mechanisms involved in Cd immobilization were complexion with -OH and -COOH, as well as the formation of Cd-π binds with aromatic C=C on the surface of solid OMs. These findings will facilitate understanding the interactions of the rice straw decomposing with soil minerals and its remediation effect on Cd-contaminated farmland.

Quantifying the pollution changes and meteorological dependence of airborne trace elements coupling source apportionment and machine learning

Airborne trace elements (TEs) present in atmospheric fine particulate matter (PM2.5) exert notable threats to human health and ecosystems. To explore the impact of meteorological conditions on shaping the pollution characteristics of TEs and the associated health risks, we quantified the variations in pollution characteristics and health risks of TEs due to meteorological impacts using weather normalization and health risk assessment models, and analyzed the source-specific contributions and potential sources of primary TEs affecting health risks using source apportionment approaches at four sites in Shandong Province from September to December 2021. Our results indicated that TEs experience dual effects from meteorological conditions, with a tendency towards higher TE concentrations and related health risks during polluted period, while the opposite occurred during clean period. The total non-carcinogenic and carcinogenic risks of TEs during polluted period increased approximately by factors of 0.53-1.74 and 0.44-1.92, respectively. Selenium (Se), manganese (Mn), and lead (Pb) were found to be the most meteorologically influenced TEs, while chromium (Cr) and manganese (Mn) were identified as the dominant TEs posing health risks. Enhanced emissions of multiple sources for Cr and Mn were found during polluted period. Depending on specific wind speeds, industrialized and urbanized centers, as well as nearby road dusts, could be key sources for TEs. This study suggested that attentions should be paid to not only the TEs from primary emissions but also the meteorology impact on TEs especially during pollution episodes to reduce health risks in the future.

Vertasile ferritin nanocages: Applications in detection and bioimaging

Food safety and human health remain significant concerns in the food industry. Detecting food contaminants and diagnosing diseases are critical aspects. Ferritin, an iron storage protein widely found in nature, offers unique advantages. Its hollow protein nanocage structure, distinct interfaces, hydrophobic or hydrophilic channels, and B-C loop regions recognized by transferrin receptor 1 make ferritin versatile for detecting heavy metals, free radicals, and bioimaging both in vitro and in vivo. This review summarizes ferritin's general characteristics, its specific properties as biosensors, and its applications in food safety and in vivo imaging. It emphasizes not only ferritin's role in detecting heavy metals like mercury and chemical hazards but also its potential in early diagnosing chronic diseases such as tumors, macrophages, and kidney diseases. Further research into ferritin promises advancements in enhancing food safety and improving human health diagnostics.

The stabilization ability of NaA zeolite derived from fly ash for lead and cadmium in soil: Mechanisms and evaluation of effectiveness

Developing technologies aimed at ecologically restoring is of great significance in addressing the problem of heavy metal pollution. In this study, NaA zeolites (FAZ) originated from fly ash with outstanding performance were prepared by alkali fusion hydrothermal method and used for the solidification and stabilization of heavy metals in soil. After systematic evaluation, it was found that FAZ may lower the leaching concentration of lead (Pb) in soil to <1 mg/kg and increase the stabilization rate of Pb to 80 % in the single Pb-contaminated soil, lower the leaching concentration of cadmium (Cd) in soil to <3 mg/kg and increase the stabilization rate of Cd to 60 % in the single Cd-contaminated soil, and lower the leaching concentration of Pb to 0.15 mg/kg and the leaching concentration of Cd to 0.74 mg/kg in PbCd complex polluted soil. Additionally, Pb stabilization rates reach 60 % and Cd stabilization rates reach 30 %, respectively. Ion exchange is primarily responsible for the adsorption and solidification of Pb and Cd in soil by FAZ. Generally, FAZ has a wide range of applications in the rehabilitation of contaminated soil and significantly lowers the level of heavy metal pollution in soil.

Visualized electrochemiluminescence detection of trace copper in practical food samples

Copper as a widely applied element in food supply chain can cause serious contamination issues that threats food safety. In this research, we present a quick and visible method for trace copper ion (Cu2+) quantification in practical food samples. Polymer dots (Pdots) were firstly conjugated with a copper-specific DNA aptamer and then tailored with rhodamine B (RhB) to extinguish the electrochemiluminescence (ECL) signal through a resonance energy transfer process. The selective release of RhB leads to signal restoration when exposed to trace Cu2+ levels, achieving remarkable linearity with the logarithm of Cu2+ concentration within the range of 1 ng/L to 10 μg/L with an impressively low limit of detection at 11.8 pg/L. Most notably, our device was also applicable on visualizing and quantifying trace Cu2+ (∼0.2 μg/g) in practical Glycyrrhiza uralensis Fisch. samples, underscoring its potential as a tool for the early prevention of potential copper contamination in food samples.

Health Risk Assessment for Potentially Toxic Elements Accumulation in Amaranthaceae Family Cultivars and their Correlation with Antioxidants and Antinutrients

Delhi's agricultural hub, nestled along the Yamuna floodplains, faces soil and water contamination issues. Utilizing organic waste composts is gaining traction to improve soil quality, but uncertainties remain about their efficacy in reducing harmful elements. The study examined three Amaranthaceae cultivars, comparing organic waste composts with chemical fertilizer to evaluate correlations between heavy metals, antioxidants, and antinutrients to assess their bioremediation potential. "Heavy metals" or "potentially toxic elements (PTE)" levels in soil and leaves were measured by ICP-MS, while antioxidants and antinutrients were analyzed with UV-VIS spectroscopy. The study revealed higher PTE levels in floodplain soil, with Cr, Ni, and Cd exceeding safe limits in all cultivars. Compost amendments reduced these pollutants by 28% compared to chemical fertilizers, decreasing bioaccumulation by 20%. Health risk assessments showed lower risks in compost-amended cultivars. Additionally, compost amendment displayed a stronger negative correlation between PTE and antioxidants, suggesting effective bioremediation. Overall, compost amendments offer promise for mitigating PTE in metropolitan floodplains.

Distribution and health risk of chromium in wheat grains at the national scale in China

Chromium (Cr) pollution may threaten food safety in China. In this study, the concentration, pollution level, distribution, and non-cancer risk of Cr in wheat grains grown in 186 areas across 28 provinces in China were investigated. Results indicated that mean concentration of Cr was 0.28 ± 2.5 mg/kg, dry mass (dm). Of the samples, 7.5 % were found to be polluted with Cr. The mean concentrations were in the following order: Northwest > Northeast > South > East > North > Southwest > Central China. Based on deterministic models, mean hazard quotient (HQ) values for adult males, adult females, and children were 0.11 ± 3.4, 0.11 ± 3.4, and 0.13 ± 3.5, respectively with < 6 % of HQ values ≥ 1. Eleven sites in northern China were identified as hotspots, whereas Gansu Province and Northwestern China were labeled as priority provinces and regions for risk control. The mean HQ values estimated by probabilistic risk assessment were two times greater than those estimated using deterministic models. The risk probabilities for adult males, adult females, and children were 4.81 %, 3.78 %, and 6.55 %, respectively. This study provides valuable information on Cr pollution in wheat grains and its risks at a national scale in China.

Relationship between nitrate, heavy metal, and sterols contents in Japanese agricultural soils with risk of groundwater pollution

In Japanese agricultural lands, nitrate-nitrogen contamination of soil and groundwater often occurs due to the application of livestock excrements and compost. Therefore, rural soils in Japan were sampled and analyzed for nitrate-nitrogen leaching, heavy metal content, and sterols associated with livestock excrement and compost to calculate contamination risk indicators. The results were analyzed using self-organizing maps and cluster analysis. Nitrate-nitrogen content using water extraction was detected in most of the sampled soils. In addition, many samples from areas that were already severely contaminated with nitrate-nitrogen showed particularly high concentrations. Coprostanol, an indicator of fecal contamination, was detected in more than half of the samples. The main source of nitrate-nitrogen contamination in these areas is livestock excrement and compost. Self-organization maps showed that areas with high nitrate-nitrogen contamination also corresponded to areas with high copper and zinc soil contents. The self-organization maps and cluster analysis resulted in five clusters: a nitrate-contaminated group mainly originating from livestock excrement and compost, a heavy metal-contaminated group, a general group, a nitrate-contaminated group mainly originating from chemical fertilizers, and a contaminated group with potentially hazardous substances requiring attention. Authorities and decision-makers can use the results to prioritize areas requiring remediation.

A review of phytoremediation of environmental lead (pb) contamination

An estimated one billion people globally are exposed to hazardous levels of lead (Pb), resulting in intellectual disabilities for over 600,000 children each year. This critical issue aligns with the expanding worldwide population and the demand for food security, emphasizing the urgency of effectively addressing heavy metal pollution especially from Pb for sustainable development. Phytoremediation, a highly favoured approach in conjunction with conventional physical, chemical, and microbial methods, is a promising approach to mitigating soil and environmental contamination. In this review, we delve into a range of soil pollution mitigation strategies, with focus on the mechanisms that underpin the phytoremediation of environmental Pb. This detailed exploration sheds light on the efficacy and complexities of utilizing plants for the detoxification and removal of lead from contaminated environments. It also examines strategies to enhance phytoremediation by incorporating microbiology, composting, nanotechnology, and foliar spraying. The potential remediation strategies largely depend on the investigation and incorporation of environmentally friendly catalysts, as well as the utilization of innovative methods such as genetic engineering to improve phytoremediation processes. Studies have also shown that biochar has the capability to lower heavy metal concentrations in plant branches by over 50%, without affecting the pH of the soil. Specifically, magnetic biochar (MBC) has been shown to decrease lead levels in plants by up to 42%. Employing these methods showcases an effective strategy to enhance the efficacy of remediation techniques and fosters sustainable solutions to the pervasive issue of Pb pollution, thereby contributing to sustainable development efforts globally.

Copper exposure induces trophoblast cell cuproptosis by up-regulating lnc-HZ11

Copper pollution has attracted global environmental concern. Widespread Cu pollution results in excessive Cu accumulation in human. Epidemiological studies and animal experiments revealed that Cu exposure might have reproductive toxicity. Cuproptosis is a recently reported Cu-dependent and programmed cell death pattern. However, the mechanism by which copper exposure might cause cell cuproptosis is largely unknown. We chose trophoblast cells as cell model and found that copper exposure causes trophoblast cell cuproptosis. In mechanism, copper exposure up-regulates lnc-HZ11 expression levels, which increases intracellular Cu2+ levels and causes trophoblast cell cuproptosis. Knockdown of lnc-HZ11 efficiently reduces intracellular Cu2+ levels and alleviate trophoblast cell cuproptosis, which could be further alleviated by co-treatment with DC or TEPA. These results discover novel toxicological effects of copper exposure and also provide potential target for protection trophoblast cells from cuproptosis in the presence of excessive copper exposure.

Source identification and migration fate of heavy metals of soil-groundwater system in a thousand-year cultivation region

Pollution of farmland by heavy metals threatens food security and human health. In addition, heavy metals in soil could infiltrate into groundwater to influence the water quality and safety of drinking water. However, the relationship between heavy metal pollution in soil and groundwater is still not clear. In this study, we investigated the soil and groundwater in the Guanzhong Plain region, which is a significant grain production base in China, and determined the spatial distributions, ecological risk, sources, and migration fates of heavy metals (As, Cd, Cr, Cu, Ni, Pb, and Zn). The results showed that the mean values (0-20 cm) in the soil were 19.57 mg kg-1 for As, 0.71 mg kg-1 for Cd, 69.65 mg kg-1 for Cr, 21.97 mg kg-1 for Cu, 28.67 mg kg-1 for Ni, 17.54 mg kg-1 for Pb, and 73.77 mg kg-1 for Zn, and the corresponding mean values in groundwater were 1.2, 0.04, 4.69, 0.15, 0.07, 0.3, and 3.6 μg L-1, respectively. The mean values for As, Cd, Cr, Pb, and Zn in soil exceeded the background values, and the mean values for As, Cd and Pb exceeded those in groundwater. Positive matrix factorization models identified five sources (fertilizers and organic fertilizers, natural sources, pesticides and herbicides, industrial activities, and sedimentation caused by transportation) for heavy metal pollution in soil and four sources (industry activity, atmospheric sedimentation caused by transportation, natural sources, and agriculture) for heavy metal pollution in groundwater. The soil particle composition and soil organic carbon content were important factors that affected the vertical distribution of heavy metals in the soil. The migration modes (convection and diffusion) were not found for all heavy metals. These results help to understand the relationships between heavy metals in soil and groundwater in farmland ecosystems regionally.

Assessment of potential human health, radiological and ecological risks around mining areas in northeastern Brazil

Mining is responsible for the release of metallic pollutants and radioactive materials into the environment, which have the potential to disrupt ecosystems and pose significant risks to human health. Significant mining activity is concentrated in the municipality of Caetité (northeastern Brazil), where Latin America's only active uranium mine and significant iron ore deposits are located. Although previous studies have shown that the regional soil and water resources are highly contaminated by various toxic elements and that exposure to these elements is known to have adverse effects on human health, the health risks in this mining region have never been assessed. The aim of this unprecedented comprehensive investigation was to assess the health, radiological and ecological risks in this mining region, which is home to nearly 100,000 people. To achieve our goal, soil and water samples were collected in the vicinity of the mines and in the main settlements in the region. Fifteen metallic toxic elements were determined using Instrumental Neutron Activation Analysis and Inductively Coupled Plasma Optical Emission Spectrometry. The HERisk code, which follows the main methodological guidelines for risk assessment, was used to quantify human health, radiological and ecological indices. The average values of the total risk and cancer risk indices indicated that region falls into the moderate risk category (1.0 ≤ HItot < 4.0). However, 63% of the sites had high risk values, with Fe, Co and As being the metals contributing most to total and cancer risk, respectively. Near the mining areas, the potential ecological risk can be considered extreme (PERI ≥ 600). The values of the calculated radiological indices correspond to typical values ​​in natural uranium areas. However, in the communities near the mine, the dose values are slightly above the permissible limit (1 mSv y-1), so they must be continuously monitored, and risk mitigation measures must be taken.

Transport characteristics of heavy metals in the soil-atmosphere-wheat system in farming areas and development of multiple linear regression predictive model

Heavy metal accumulation in agricultural products has become a major concern. Previous studies have focused on the transport of heavy metals from the soil and their accumulation in crops. However, recent studies revealed that wheat leaves, ears, and awns can also transport and accumulate heavy metals. Wheat grains can be influenced by two sources of heavy metals: soil contamination and atmospheric deposition. To comprehend the transport characteristics of heavy metals in soil, atmospheric deposition, and wheat, 37 samples each for wheat rhizosphere soil, wheat roots, stems, leaves, and grains were collected. Fifteen samples of atmospheric dry deposition and atmospheric wet deposition were collected from Linshu County (northern area), China. Based on the test data, the characteristics of heavy metals and their distribution in the study area were analyzed. Migration patterns of heavy metals in crops from different sources were investigated using Pearson correlation and redundancy analysis. Finally, a predictive model for heavy metals in wheat grains was developed using multiple linear regression analysis. Significant disparities in the distribution of heavy metals existed among wheat roots, stems, leaves, and grains. The coefficient of variation of heavy metals in atmospheric deposition was relatively high, indicating discernible spatial patterns influenced by human activities. Notably, a positive correlation was observed between the concentration of heavy metals in wheat grains and atmospheric deposition of Hg, Cd, and Pb. Conversely, Zn and Ni levels in wheat grains were significantly negatively associated with soil Zn, Ni, pH, and OM content. The contribution of heavy metal elements from different sources varied in their impact on the grain's heavy metal content. Specifically, atmospheric deposition was the primary source of Hg and Pb in wheat grains, while Cd, Ni, Cu, and Zn were predominantly derived from soil. Using a multiple linear regression model, we could accurately predict Hg, Pb, Cd, Ni, Zn, and As concentrations in crop grains. This model can facilitate quantitative evaluation of ecological risk of heavy metals accumulation in crops in the study area.

Nondestructive detection of lead content in oilseed rape leaves under silicon action using hyperspectral image

This study explored the feasibility of employing hyperspectral imaging (HSI) technology to quantitatively assess the effect of silicon (Si) on lead (Pb) content in oilseed rape leaves. Aiming at the defects of hyperspectral data with high dimension and redundant information, this paper proposed two improved feature wavelength extraction algorithms, repetitive interval combination optimization (RICO) and interval combination optimization (ICO) combined with stepwise regression (ICO-SR). The entire oilseed rape leaves were taken as the region of interest (ROI) to extract the visible near-infrared hyperspectral data within the 400.89-1002.19 nm range. In data processing, Savitzky-Golay (SG) smoothing, detrending (DT), and multiple scatter correction (MSC) were utilized for spectral data preprocessing, while recursive feature elimination (RFE), iteratively variable subset optimization (IVSO), ICO, and the two enhanced algorithms were employed to identify characteristic wavelengths. Subsequently, based on the spectral data of preprocessing and feature extraction, partial least squares regression (PLSR) and support vector regression (SVR) methods were used to construct various Pb content prediction models in oilseed rape leaves, with a comparison and analysis of each model performance. The results indicated that the two improved algorithms were more efficient in extracting representative spectral information than conventional methods, and the performance of SVR models was better than PLSR models. Finally, to further improve the prediction accuracy and robustness of the SVR models, the whale optimization algorithm (WOA) was introduced to optimize their parameters. The findings demonstrated that the MSC-RICO-WOA-SVR model achieved the best comprehensive performance, with Rp2 of 0.9436, RMSEP of 0.0501 mg/kg, and RPD of 3.4651. The results further confirmed the great potential of HSI combined with feature extraction algorithms to evaluate the effectiveness of Si in alleviating Pb stress in oilseed rape and provided a theoretical basis for determining the appropriate amount of Si application to alleviate Pb pollution in oilseed rape.

Straw removal reduces Cd availability and rice Cd accumulation in Cd-contaminated paddy soil: Cd fraction, soil microorganism structure and porewater DOC and Cd

The impacts of straw removal on rice Cd absorption, behaviour of Cd and microbial community in rhizosphere soil were investigated in paddy fields over two consecutive seasons. The results of the experiments in two fields revealed that straw removal promoted the transformation of soil Cd from acid-extractable and oxidisable fraction to residual fraction and reduced soil DTPA-Cd content with the reduction in DOC and Cd ions in soil porewater, thereby decreasing Cd content in rice. Specifically, the Cd content in brown rice of early rice was below 0.2 mg·kg-1 when all rice straw and roots were removed in the slightly Cd-contaminated soils. The α-diversity of soil microbial communities was less influenced by continuous straw removal, β-diversity was altered and the relative abundances of Anaeromyxobacter, Methylocystis and Mycobacterium microbes were increased. Redundancy analysis and network analysis exhibited that soil pH predominantly influenced the microbial community. Path analysis revealed that the Cd content in brown rice could be directly influenced by the soil Total-Cd and DTPA-Cd, as well as soil pH and OM. Straw removal, including roots removal, is an economical and effective technique to reduce Cd accumulation in rice plants.

Effects of dissolved organic matter on distribution characteristics of heavy metals and their interactions with microorganisms in soil under long-term exogenous effects

Long-term waste accumulation (LTWA) in soil not only alters its physical and chemical properties but also affects heavy metals and microorganisms in polluted soil through the dissolved organic matter (DOM) it produces. However, research on the impact of DOM from LTWA on heavy metals and microorganisms in polluted soil is limited, which has resulted in an incomplete understanding of the mechanisms involved in LTWA soils remediation. This study focuses on the DOM generated by waste accumulation and analyses the physicochemical properties, microbial community structure, and vertical distribution of heavy metals in four types of LTWA soils at different depths (0-100 cm). A causal analysis is conducted using structural equation modelling. The results indicate that due to the retention effect of the soil and microorganisms, heavy metal pollution is concentrated on the soil surface layer (>30 cm). With increasing depth, there is a decrease in heavy metal concentration and an increase in microbial diversity and abundance. DOM plays a significant role in regulating the concentration of soil heavy metals and the diversity and abundance of microorganisms. The DOM from different soils gradually transforms into substances dominated by tyrosine, tryptophan, and fulvic acid, which sustain the normal life activities and gene expression of microorganisms. Bacteria such as Pseudarthrobacter, Desulfurivibrio, Thiobacillus, and Sulfurimonas, which are involved in energy transformation, along with genes such as water channel protein and YDIF, which enhance heavy metal metabolism, ensure that microbial communities can maintain basic life processes in polluted environments and gradually select for dominant species that are adapted to heavy metal pollution. These novel discoveries illuminate the potential for modulating the composition of DOM to amplify microbial activity, while concurrently offering insights into the migration patterns of various long-term exogenous pollutants. This foundational knowledge provides a foundation for the development of efficacious remediation strategies.

Bio-pump cadmium phytoextraction efficiency promoted by phytohormones in Festuca arundinacea

The leaves of Festuca arundinacea can excrete cadmium (Cd) out onto the leaf surface, leading to a bio-pump phytoremediation strategy based on "root uptake-root-to-leaf translocation-leaf excretion". However, the bio-bump efficiency of soil Cd is a limiting factor for the implementation of this novel technology. Bio-bump remediation involves the bioprocess of plant root uptake from soil, root-to-leaf translocation, and leaf hydathode excretion. Here we show the significant effects of phytohormones in regulating the bio-pump phytoextraction efficiency. The results showed that salicylic acid and ethylene enhanced the whole process of Cd root uptake, root-to-leaf translocation, and leaf excretion, promoting the bio-pump phytoextraction efficiency by 63.6% and 73.8%, respectively. Gibberellin also greatly promoted Cd translocation, leaf excretion, and phytoextraction, but did not significantly impact Cd root uptake. Our results indicate that salicylic acid and ethylene could be recommended to promote bio-pump phytoextraction efficiency in F. arundinacea. Gibberellin might be used for a short-term promotion of the leaf Cd excretion.

Enhanced consolidation and removal of accumulated flocculants in dredged soil via leaching with vacuum preloading

The vacuum preloading coupling flocculation treatment is a widely employed method for reinforcing soils with high water content in practical construction. However, uneven distribution and accumulation of flocculants pose significant damage to the soil environment and result in uneven soil consolidation, leading to severe issues in subsequent soil development and exploitation. To address these concerns, an evolved leaching with vacuum method is developed for facilitating soil consolidation while preventing the accumulation of flocculant in the soil. In this study, five model tests are conducted in which FeCl3 is chosen as the typical flocculant to promote soil consolidation, and deionized water is used for leaching. The final discharged water, settlement, water content and penetration resistance of soil are obtained to evaluate the soil reinforcement effect, while the flocculant removal effect is evaluated by the Fe3+ content in the filtrate and soil. The comprehensive reinforcement and flocculant removal effect show that this method is extremely effective compared to traditional vacuum preloading. The two leaching is clarified as the best choice, resulting in a 22% decrease in the soil water content and a 25% in soil penetration resistance, meanwhile a 12.8% removal rate of the flocculant. The test results demonstrate that leaching with vacuum preloading can contribute to promoting soil consolidation and reducing the accumulation of flocculant in the soil, ensuring the safe and eco-friendly use of the soil for future applications. The conclusions obtained are of significant theoretical value and technical support for practical construction and sustainable development.

Hyperaccumulators' Diversity Enhances Cd-Contaminated Soil Restoration and Reduces Rice Cd Uptake under an Intercropping System

Cd accumulation in rice-cultivated soils across China is a major problem that needs to be tackled. A plot experiment was carried out using heavy metal (HM) hyperaccumulators Amaranthus hypochondriacus L. and Perilla frutescens (L.) Britt. intercropped with low-accumulation rice to obtain safe edible rice while reducing the soil Cd concentration. It was found that Cd concentration in soil was decreased by 7.43 and 2.86% under rice intercropped with Amaranthus hypochondriacus L. and Perilla frutescens (L.) Britt., respectively, compared to single cropped rice. In addition, enhanced effects were noted under the combination of Amaranthus hypochondriacus L., Perilla frutescens (L.) Britt, and rice in which a 20.35% decrease in soil Cd content was recorded compared to single-cultivated rice soil. In addition, the available Cd in soil was reduced by 4.00 and 5.00% under rice/Amaranthus and rice/Perilla, respectively, and 12.00% under rice/Amaranthus/Perilla mixed culture. Moreover, the concentration of Cd in various parts of rice was under permissible limits. However, rice biomass was decreased by the presence of hyperaccumulators. This study suggests that combining HM hyperaccumulator plants and low-accumulation rice provides efficient Cd extraction results and could be a crucial option for restoring Cd-contaminated soil without reducing rice production.

Bioaccumulation and transferreing for impacts on Cd and Pb by aphid consumption of the broad bean, Vicia faba L, in soil heavy metal pollution

Heavy metal pollution threatens human and ecological health. Heavy metals can exist in the soil for a long time and migrate to organisms along the food chain. However, only a few studies have investigated the effects of a single stress on broad beans. Here, we aimed to characterize Cd and Pb bioaccumulation, at varying concentrations, in the broad bean, Vicia faba L. We also determined how the bioaccumulated metals are impacted by aphids that consume the plant. No significant difference was noted in the germination rates of broad beans at the early stage of planting (after 8 days), but eventually, the germination rates of broad beans at all time points first decreased and then increased, and the highest inhibition efficiency was observed in the T3 group (12.5 mg/L Cd2+ + 50 mg/L Pb2+). Fourteen days after planting, there was no significant difference in seedling height between the T5 (50 mg/L Cd2+ + 200 mg/L Pb2+) and control groups; however, that in the other groups decreased significantly and there was no dependence between stress concentration and inhibition efficiency. In addition, both Cd and Pb in the soil could be transferred to broad beans, and the concentration of Pb in the roots of broad beans was greater than that of Cd, whereas the opposite was observed in the stems and leaves. Notably, under mixed stress, aphids could significantly reduce the content of Cd in broad beans; similarly, the Pb content in the roots and stems of broad beans decreased significantly after being infested with aphids but increased significantly in the leaves. Further, the aphid infestation decreased the Pb content in the soil and the soil Cd content in the highest concentration group (T5 group) (50 mg/L Cd2+ + 200 mg/L Pb2+). These results highlight the necessity of focusing on the effect of insects on heavy metal remediation in plants and provide a new perspective for reducing plant Cd toxicity.

Assessment of Toxic Element Contamination in Honey, Milk, and Eggs from Algiers (Algeria) Using Inductively Coupled Plasma Mass Spectrometry (ICP-MS): Exploring Health Implications of Pollution

Consumption of foods such as milk, honey, and eggs contaminated with toxic elements above established norms poses a health risk to the population. This study explores the potential of products from beehives, poultry, and dairy as indicators of environmental pollution caused by toxic substances (Pb, Cd, Hg), seeks contamination sources, evaluates the exposure level, and assesses health risks. Through the analysis of samples from three distinct regions in Algiers, including 30 milk, 30 honey, and 30 poultry egg samples, the study assesses levels of toxic elements (lead, cadmium, and mercury) using ICP-MS and analyzes consumer exposure risk. The analysis of honey reveals levels of Pb (0.282 μg/g) > Cd (0.161 μg/g) > Hg (0.017 μg/g), the analysis of eggs shows levels of Pb (0.399 μg/g) > Cd (0.239 μg/g) > Hg (0.027 μg/g), and the results in milk show levels of Cd (0.250 μg/g) > Pb (0.131 μg/g) > Hg (0.019 μg/g). The risk analysis indicates a risk associated with milk consumption for both adults and children, whereas for honey and eggs, the risk is limited to children only in polluted areas. Future research should expand to other toxic elements in different food matrices in both northern and southern Algeria to evaluate the health risk for African and European consumers.

Enhancing the phytoextraction efficiency of heavy metals in acidic and alkaline soils by Sedum alfredii Hance: A study on the synergistic effect of plant growth regulator and plant growth-promoting bacteria

Plant growth regulators (PGR) and plant growth-promoting bacteria (PGPB) have the potential in phytoremediation of heavy metals (HMs) contaminated soils. However, their sole application may not yield the optimal results, thus necessitating the combined application. The present study aimed to enhance the phytoremediation efficiency of Sedum alfredii Hance (S. alfredii) in acidic and alkaline soils through the combination of PGR (Brassinolide, BR) and PGPB (Pseudomonas fluorescens, P. fluorescens). The combination of BR and P. fluorescens (BRB treatment) effectively increased the removal efficiency of S. alfredii for Cd, Pb, and Zn by 355.2 and 155.3 %, 470.1 and 128.9 %, and 408.4 and 209.6 %, in acidic and alkaline soils, respectively. Moreover, BRB treatment led to a substantial increase in photosynthetic pigments contents and antioxidant enzymes activities, resulting in a remarkable increase in biomass (86.71 and 47.22 %) and dry mass (101.49 and 42.29 %) of plants grown in acidic and alkaline soils, respectively. Similarly, BRB treatment significantly elevated the Cd (109.4 and 71.36 %), Pb (174.9 and 48.03 %), and Zn levels (142.8 and 104.3 %) in S. alfredii shoots, along with cumulative accumulation of Cd (122.7 and 79.47 %), Pb (183.8 and 60.49 %), and Zn (150.7 and 117.9 %), respectively. In addition, the BRB treatment lowered the soil pH and DTPA-HMs contents, while augmenting soil enzymatic activities, thereby contributing soil microecology and facilitating the HMs absorption and translocation by S. alfredii to over-ground tissues. Furthermore, the evaluation of microbial community structure in phyllosphere and rhizosphere after remediation revealed the shift in microbial abundance. The combined treatment altered the principal effects on S. alfredii HMs accumulation from bacterial diversity to the soil HMs availability. In summary, our findings demonstrated that synergistic application of BR and P. fluorescens represents a viable approach to strengthen the phytoextraction efficacy of S. alfredii in varying soils.

Past anthropogenic impacts revealed by trace elements in cave guano

Natural and human-induced toxic elements can accumulate in the environment, posing significant risks to human health and ecosystems. This study explores cave bat guano, an unconventional and relatively under-researched environmental repository, to reveal historical pollution trends and sources. Through trace elements analysis of a 1.5-m-thick guano deposit from Zidită Cave (Romania), we track changes in mining and metallurgy from 1000 CE-2012. We identified substantial pollution primarily from porphyry copper and Au-Ag-Te mines, but also impacts from usage of leaded gasoline and agricultural practices. Our record shows disruptions caused by the Bubonic plague around 1250 CE and a major surge ∼ 1500 CE. After the decline triggered by the European silver market collapse in 1525 CE, our study reveals a brief mining revival. This resurgence was followed by a continuous decline lasting until the early 1800s, driven by socio-economic upheavals and recurrent outbreaks of the bubonic plagues. The Industrial Revolution sparked prolonged growth that lasted until 1989 CE, only briefly interrupted by the Great Depression and World War II. Consequently, cave bat guano proves to be a critical resource for understanding spatial pollution patterns, both locally and regionally, and for identifying specific pollution sources.

Conjoint analysis of physio-biochemical, transcriptomic, and metabolomic reveals the response characteristics of solanum nigrum L. to cadmium stress

Cadmium (Cd) is a nonessential element in plants and has adverse effects on the growth and development of plants. However, the molecular mechanisms of Cd phytotoxicity, tolerance and accumulation in hyperaccumulators Solanum nigrum L. has not been well understood. Here, physiology, transcriptome, and metabolome analyses were conducted to investigate the influence on the S. nigrum under 0, 25, 50, 75 and 100 µM Cd concentrations for 7 days. Pot experiments demonstrated that compared with the control, Cd treatment significantly inhibited the biomass, promoted the Cd accumulation and translocation, and disturbed the balance of mineral nutrient metabolism in S. nigrum, particularly at 100 µM Cd level. Moreover, the photosynthetic pigments contents were severely decreased, while the content of total protein, proline, malondialdehyde (MDA), H2O2, and antioxidant enzyme activities generally increased first and then slightly declined with increasing Cd concentrations, in both leaves and roots. Furthermore, combined with the previous transcriptomic data, numerous crucial coding-genes related to mineral nutrients and Cd ion transport, and the antioxidant enzymes biosynthesis were identified, and their expression pattern was regulated under different Cd stress. Simultaneously, metabolomic analyses revealed that Cd treatment significantly changed the expression level of many metabolites related to amino acid, lipid, carbohydrate, and nucleotide metabolism. Metabolic pathway analysis also showed that S. nigrum roots activated some differentially expressed metabolites (DEMs) involved in energy metabolism, which may enhance the energy supply for detoxification. Importantly, central common metabolism pathways of DEGs and DEMs, including the "TCA cycle", "glutathione metabolic pathway" and "glyoxylate and dicarboxylate metabolism" were screened using conjoint transcriptomics and metabolomics analysis. Our results provide some novel evidences on the physiological and molecular mechanisms of Cd tolerance in hyperaccumulator S. nigrum plants.

Polystyrene nanoplastics distinctly impact cadmium uptake and toxicity in Arabidopsis thaliana

The ubiquitous presence of micro- and nanoplastics (MNPs) in soil has raised concerns regarding their potential effects on terrestrial plants. The coexistence and interactions between MNPs and heavy metals altering their phytotoxicity deserves further investigation. In this study, we explored the impacts of various concentrations of polystyrene nanoplastics (PS-NPs) and cadmium (Cd) alone or in combination on the growth and development of Arabidopsis thaliana. Additionally, we examined the effects of combined stress on the uptake and translocation of Cd within Arabidopsis thaliana. Our findings revealed several key insights: PS-NPs exhibited the capability to internalize in the maturation zone of Arabidopsis roots; the presence of Cd changed the particle size and zeta potential of PS-NPs; the presence of PS-NPs heightened Cd accumulation in the underground parts of Arabidopsis seedlings, leading to a stronger oxidative stress response in these regions; the composite stress exerted a more pronounced effect on the growth and development of Arabidopsis compared to individual stresses. Interestingly, while higher PS-NPs concentrations hindered Cd migration from roots to leaves, they also acted as carriers for Cd uptake in Arabidopsis roots. These findings shed light on the combined impacts of MNPs and heavy metals on plant physiology, offering theoretical insights to guide risk assessment strategies for MNPs and heavy metals in terrestrial ecosystems.

Rapidly reducing cadmium from contaminated farmland soil by novel magnetic recyclable Fe3O4/mercapto-functionalized attapulgite beads

Reducing cadmium (Cd) content from contaminated farmland soils remains a major challenge due to the difficulty in separating commonly used adsorbents from soils. This study synthesized novel millimeter-sized magnetic Fe3O4/mercapto-functionalized attapulgite beads (MFBs) through a facile one-step gelation process incorporating alginate. The MFBs inherit the environmental stability of alginate and enhance its mechanical strength by hybridizing Fe3O4 and clay mineral components. MFBs can be easily separated from flooded soils by magnets. When applied to 12 Cd-polluted paddy soils and 14 Cd-polluted upland soils, MFBs achieved Cd(II) removal rates ranging from 16.9% to 62.2% and 9.8%-54.6%, respectively, within a 12-h period. The MFBs predominantly targeted the exchangeable and acid soluble, and reducible fractions of Cd, with significantly enhanced removal efficiencies in paddy soils compared to upland soils. Notably, MFBs exhibited superior adsorption performance in soils with lower pH and organic matter (OM) content, where the bioavailability and mobility of Cd are heightened. The reduction of Cd content by MFBs is a sustainable and safe method, as it permanently removes the bioavailable Cd from soil, rather than temporarily reducing its bioavailability. The functional groups such as -SH, -OH, present in attapulgite and alginate of MFBs, played a crucial role in Cd(II) adsorption. Additionally, attapulgite and zeolite provided a porous matrix structure that further enhanced Cd(II) adsorption. The results of X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy suggested that both chemical precipitation and surface complexation contributed to Cd(II) removal. The MFBs maintained 87.6% Cd removal efficiency after 5 regeneration cycles. The surface of the MFBs exposed new adsorption sites and increased the specific surface area during multiple cycles with Cd-contaminated soil. This suggests that MFBs treatment with magnetic retrieval is a potentially effective pathway for the rapid removal of Cd from contaminated farmland soils.

Unveiling biochar potential to promote safe crop production in toxic metal(loid) contaminated soil: A meta-analysis

Biochar application emerges as a promising and sustainable solution for the remediation of soils contaminated with potentially toxic metal(loid)s (PTMs), yet its potential to reduce PTM accumulation in crops remains to be fully elucidated. In our study, a hierarchical meta-analysis based on 276 research articles was conducted to quantify the effects of biochar application on crop growth and PTM accumulation. Meanwhile, a machine learning approach was developed to identify the major contributing features. Our findings revealed that biochar application significantly enhanced crop growth, and reduced PTM concentrations in crop tissues, showing a decrease trend of grains (36.1%, 33.6 to 38.6%) > shoots (31.1%, 29.3 to 32.8%) > roots (27.5%, 25.7 to 29.2%). Furthermore, biochar modifications were found to amplify its remediation potential in PTM-contaminated soils. Biochar application was observed to provide favorable conditions for reducing PTM uptake by crops, primarily through decreasing available PTM concentrations and improving overall soil quality. Employing machine learning techniques, we identified biochar properties, such as surface area and C content as a key factor in decreasing PTM bioavailability in soil-crop systems. Furthermore, our study indicated that biochar application could reduce probabilistic health risks associated with of the presence of PTMs in crop grains, thereby contributing to human health protection. These findings highlighted the essential role of biochar in remediating PTM-contaminated lands and offered guidelines for enhancing safe crop production.

Human health risk assessment of toxic heavy metals in summer crops and vegetables: a study in Ilam Province, Iran

Purpose

The presence of toxic heavy metals (HMs) in agricultural crops ‎can be considered as a noteworthy threat for consumers. The aim of this study was to assess the content of HMs ‎(Pb, As, Cr, Cd, Co, Hg, and Ag) and their potential health risk in summer crops and vegetables (watermelon, cantaloupe, cucumber, melon, tomato, onion, ‎potato, raw and stewed vegetables) in Ilam province, Iran.

Methods

Totally, 31 crop samples were collected from local farms during the 2019 harvest ‎season and the elements ‎ content were evaluated using inductively coupled plasma-mass spectrometry (ICP-MS). The non-carcinogenic health risk of HMs to the adults and children was estimated by Monte Carlo simulation method and target hazard quotients (THQs).

Results

In general, the results showed that the concentration of Cr in the studied ‎agricultural crops was higher than other HMs. As well as, the carcinogenic risk (CR) obtained for adults and children were more than the acceptable range for As. Also, CR for As in raw vegetable was the most (‎8.19E-1) and violated the threshold risk limit. The total carcinogenic risk of HMs in children was higher than that in adults.

Conclusion

These results suggest that the agricultural crops were not safe for human consumption with potential risks associated. Due to the possible health effects of such products consumption, proper action should be taken to avoid chronic exposure, prevention of further pollution and consequent adverse health implications.

Ecological consequences of biochar and hydrochar amendments in soil: assessing environmental impacts and influences

Anthropogenic activities have caused irreversible consequences on our planet, including climate change and environmental pollution. Nevertheless, reducing greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions and capturing carbon can mitigate global warming. Biochar and hydrochar are increasingly used for soil remediation due to their stable adsorption qualities. As soil amendments, these materials improve soil quality and reduce water loss, prevent cracking and shrinkage, and interact with microbial communities, resulting in a promising treatment method for reducing gas emissions from the top layer of soil. However, during long-term studies, contradictory results were found, suggesting that higher biochar application rates led to higher soil CO2 effluxes, biodiversity loss, an increase in invasive species, and changes in nutrient cycling. Hydrochar, generated through hydrothermal carbonization, might be less stable when introduced into the soil, which could lead to heightened GHG emissions due to quicker carbon breakdown and increased microbial activity. On the other hand, biochar, created via pyrolysis, demonstrates stability and can beneficially impact GHG emissions. Biochar could be the preferred red option for carbon sequestration purposes, while hydrochar might be more advantageous for use as a gas adsorbent. This review paper highlights the ecological impact of long-term applications of biochar and hydrochar in soil. In general, using these materials as soil amendments helps establish a sustainable pool of organic carbon, decreasing atmospheric GHG concentration and mitigating the impacts of climate change.

Heavy metal spatial distribution, source analysis, and ecological risks in the central hilly area of Hainan Island, China: results from a high-density soil survey

The presence of heavy metals in soil has gained considerable attention due to their potential risks to ecosystems and human health. In this study, a thorough soil investigation was performed in the hilly region of central Hainan, which was formerly regarded as an area with the highest ecological environmental quality. A total of 7094 soil samples were systematically collected with high density over a large area. Simultaneously, a detailed investigation was conducted on the surrounding environment of each sampling point, including environmental factors such as soil, land use and crop types. The soil samples were analysed for heavy metals, pH, organic matter, and other parameters. The soil heavy metal pollution level, ecological risk and health risk were evaluated using the geo-accumulation index and the potential ecological risk index. The findings showed that the average contents of the heavy metals As, Cd, Cr, Cu, Hg, Ni, Pb and Zn in the soil were 1.68, 0.042, 24.2, 6.49, 0.0319, 7.06, 29.6 and 49.8 mg·kg-1 respectively. Except for Hg, the mean values of the other heavy metals were either lower than or similar to the background values of Hainan. Also, only a few localised areas showed contamination by heavy metals. The primary sources of heavy metals, identified by a positive matrix factorisation model, could be categorised into four types: natural sources related to the soil formation process from acidic intrusive rocks (such as granite); natural sources primarily influenced by atmospheric deposition; anthropogenic sources associated with agricultural activities; and natural sources related to the soil formation process from middle-mafic intrusive rocks and black shales. The correlation analysis and variance analysis findings suggested that the content of heavy metals in the soil was primarily associated with the parent rock. The study area generally had low heavy metal levels and was not significantly polluted. However, agricultural activities still affected the enrichment of heavy metals. Therefore, it is imperative to remain vigilant about the ecological risks linked to soil heavy metals while continuing land development and expanding agricultural activities in the future. These findings indicate that conducting high-density soil surveys can enhance our understanding of regional soil heavy metals and enable reliable recommendations for agricultural planning. Whether in areas with low pollution risk or potential pollution risk, it is recommended that high-density soil surveys be conducted provide scientific guidance for further agricultural development.

A novel Biochar-PGPB strategy for simultaneous soil remediation and safe vegetable production

There is currently increasing pressure on agriculture to simultaneously remediate soil and ensure safe agricultural production. In this study, we investigate the potential of a novel combination of biochar and plant growth-promoting bacteria (PGPB) as a promising approach. Two types of biochar, corn stover and rice husk-derived, were used in combination with a PGPB strain, Bacillus sp. PGP5, to remediate Cd and Pb co-contaminated soil and enhance lettuce performance. The contaminated soil was pre-incubated with biochar prior to PGP5 inoculation. The combined application of biochar and PGPB reduced the diethylenetriaminepentaacetic acid (DTPA) -extractable Cd and Pb concentrations in the soil by 46.45%-55.96% and 42.08%-44.83%, respectively. Additionally, this combined application increased lettuce yield by 23.37%-65.39% and decreased Cd and Pb concentrations in the edible parts of the lettuce by 57.39%-68.04% and 13.57%-32.50%. The combined application showed a better promotion on lettuce growth by facilitating chlorophyll synthesis and reducing oxidative stress. These demonstrated a synergistic effect between biochar and PGPB. Furthermore, our study elucidated the specific role of the biochar-PGPB combination in soil microbial communities. Biochar application promoted the survival of PGP5 in the soil. The impact of biochar or PGPB on microbial communities was found to be most significant in the early stage, while the development of plants had a greater influence on rhizosphere microbial communities in later stage. Plants showed a tendency to recruit plant-associated microbes, such as Cyanobacteria, to facilitate growth processes. Notably, the combined application of biochar and PGPB expedited the assembly of microbial communities, enabling them more closely with the rhizosphere microbial communities in late stage of plant development and thus enhancing their effects on promoting plant growth. This study highlights the "accelerating" advantage of the biochar-PGPB combination in the assembly of rhizosphere microbiomes and offers a new strategy for simultaneous soil remediation and safe agricultural production.

Research progress in the detection of trace heavy metal ions in food samples

Food safety is the basis for ensuring human survival and development. The threat of heavy metal ions to food safety has become a social concern with the rapid growth of the economy and the accompanying environmental pollution. Some heavy metal ions are highly toxic even at trace levels and pose significant health risks to humans. Therefore, ultrasensitive detection of heavy metal ions in food samples is important. In this mini-review, recent advances in the analytical methods based on nanomaterials for detecting trace heavy metal ions in food samples are summarized in three categories: electrochemical, colorimetric, and fluorescent methods. We present the features and sensing mechanisms of these three methods, along with typical examples to illustrate their application in the detection of heavy metal ions in foods. This mini-review ends with a discussion of current challenges and future prospects of these approaches for sensing heavy metal ions. The review will help readers understand the principles of these methods, thereby promoting the development of new analytical methods for the detection of heavy metal ions in food samples.

Iron Plaque: A Shield against Soil Contamination and Key to Sustainable Agriculture

Soils play a dominant role in supporting the survival and growth of crops and they are also extremely important for human health and food safety. At present, the contamination of soil by heavy metals remains a globally concerning environmental issue that needs to be resolved. In the environment, iron plaque, naturally occurring on the root surface of wetland plants, is found to be equipped with an excellent ability at blocking the migration of heavy metals from soils to plants, which can be further developed as an environmentally friendly strategy for soil remediation to ensure food security. Because of its large surface-to-volume porous structure, iron plaque exhibits high binding affinity to heavy metals. Moreover, iron plaque can be seen as a reservoir to store nutrients to support the growth of plants. In this review, the formation process of iron plaque, the ecological role that iron plaque plays in the environment and the interaction between iron plaque, plants and microbes, are summarized.

Foliar application protected vegetable against poisonous element cadmium and mitigated human health risks

Foliar application has been reported as an effective method to facilitate plant growth and mitigate cadmium (Cd) accumulation. However, the application of foliar fertilizers on plant production, Cd uptake and health risks of Solanaceae family remains unknown. In this study, four foliar fertilizers were applied to investigate their effects on the production, Cd accumulation and human health risk assessment of two varieties of pepper (Capsicum annuum L.) and eggplant (Solanum melongena L.), respectively. Compared with CK, the foliar application increased vegetable production to 104.16 %-123.70 % in peppers, and 100.83 %-105.17 % in eggplants, accordingly. The application of foliar fertilizers largely decreased Cd TF (transportation factor) by up to 23.32 % in JY, 18.37 % in GJ of pepper varieties, and up to 14.47 % in ZL, 15.24 % in HGR of eggplant varieties. Moreover, Cd BAF (bioaccumulation factor) also declined to different extents after the application of foliar fertilizers. As for human health risk assessments, foliar application diminished the hazard index (HI) and carcinogenic risk (CR) of both pepper and eggplant varieties. The results concluded that the application of composed foliar fertilizers was most effective, and could be a promising alternative for the improvement of vegetable production and mitigation of vegetable Cd accumulation and human health risks as well. The results further highlighted the understanding of foliar fertilizer application on vegetable production and health risks, which benefited better vegetable safe production and further guaranteed human health.

Landfill leachate a potential challenge towards sustainable environmental management

The increasing amount of waste globally has led to a rise in the use of landfills, causing more pollutants to be released through landfill leachate. This leachate is a harmful mix formed from various types of waste at a specific site, and careful disposal is crucial to prevent harm to the environment. Understanding the physical and chemical properties, age differences, and types of landfills is essential to grasp how landfill leachate behaves in the environment. The use of Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) in managing leachate is noticeable, as applying these goals directly is crucial in reducing the negative effects of landfill leachate. This detailed review explores the origin of landfill leachate, its characteristics, global classification by age, composition analysis, consequences of mismanagement, and the important role of SDGs in achieving sustainable landfill leachate management. The aim is to provide a perspective on the various aspects of landfill leachate, covering its origin, key features, global distribution, environmental impacts from poor management, and importance of SDGs which can guide for sustainable mitigation within a concise framework.

BnXTH1 regulates cadmium tolerance by modulating vacuolar compartmentalization and the cadmium binding capacity of cell walls in ramie (Boehmeria nivea)

Xyloglucan endotransglucosylase/hydrolases (XTH) are cell wall-modifying enzymes important in plant response to abiotic stress. However, the role of XTH in cadmium (Cd) tolerance in ramie remains largely unknown. Here, we identified and cloned BnXTH1, a member of the XTH family, in response to Cd stress in ramie. The BnXTH1 promoter (BnXTH1p) demonstrated that MeJA induces the response of BnXTH1p to Cd stress. Moreover, overexpressing BnXTH1 in Boehmeria nivea increased Cd tolerance by significantly increasing the Cd content in the cell wall and decreasing Cd inside ramie cells. Cadmium stress induced BnXTH1-expression and consequently increased xyloglucan endotransglucosylase (XET) activity, leading to high xyloglucan contents and increased hemicellulose contents in ramie. The elevated hemicellulose content increased Cd chelation onto the cell walls and reduced the level of intracellular Cd. Interestingly, overexpressing BnXTH1 significantly increased the content of Cd in vacuoles of ramie and vacuolar compartmentalization genes. Altogether, these results evidence that Cd stress induced MeJA accumulation in ramie, thus, activating BnXTH1 expression and increasing the content of xyloglucan to enhance the hemicellulose binding capacity and increase Cd chelation onto cell walls. BnXTH1 also enhances the vacuolar Cd compartmentalization and reduces the level of Cd entering the organelles and soluble solution.

Soil amendments alter cadmium distribution and bacterial community structure in paddy soils

Soil amendments play a pivotal role in ensuring the safety of food production by inhibiting the transfer of heavy metal ions from soils to crops. Nevertheless, their impact on soil characteristics and the microbial community and their role in reducing cadmium (Cd) accumulation in rice remain unclear. In this study, pot experiments were conducted to investigate the effects of three soil amendments (mineral, organic, and microbial) on the distribution of Cd speciation, organic components, iron oxides, and microbial community structure. The application of soil amendments resulted in significant reductions in the soil available Cd content (16 %-51 %) and brown rice Cd content (16 %-78 %), facilitating the transformation of Cd from unstable forms (decreasing 10 %-20 %) to stable forms (increasing 77 %-150 %) in the soil. The mineral and organic amendments increased the soil cation exchange capacity (CEC) and plant-derived organic carbon (OC), respectively, leading to reduced Cd accumulation in brown rice, while the microbial amendment enhanced OC complexity and the abundances of Firmicutes and Bacteroidota, contributing to the decreased rice Cd uptake. The synchrotron radiation-based Fourier transform infrared (SR-FTIR) spectroscopy indicated that soil amendments regulated soil Cd species by promoting iron oxides and OC coupling. Moreover, both organic and microbial amendments significantly reduced the diversity and richness of the bacterial communities and altered their compositions and structures, by increasing the relative abundances of Bacteroidota and Firmicutes and decreasing those of Acidobacteria, Actinobacteria, and Myxococcota. Soil microbiome analysis revealed that the increase of Firmicutes and Bacteroidota associated with Cd adsorption and sequestration contributed to the suppression of soil Cd reactivity. These findings offer valuable insights into the potential mechanisms by which soil amendments regulate the speciation and bioavailability of Cd, and improve the bacterial communities, thereby providing guidance for agricultural management practices.

Enhancing phytoremediation of cadmium and arsenic in alkaline soil by Miscanthus sinensis: A study on the synergistic effect of endophytic fungi and biochar

Endophytic fungi (Trichoderma harzianum (TH) and Paecilomyces lilacinus (PL)) showed potential in phytoremediation for soils contaminated with potentially toxic elements (PTEs (Cd and As)). However, their efficiency is limited, which can be enhanced with the assistance of biochar. This study sought to investigate the effects of TH at two application rates (T1: 4.5 g m-2; T2: 9 g m-2), PL at two application rates (P1: 4.5 g m-2; P2: 9 g m-2), in conjunction with biochar (BC) at 750 g m-2 on the phytoremediation of PTEs by Miscanthus sinensis (M. sinensis). The results showed that the integration of endophytic fungi with biochar notably enhanced the accumulation of Cd and As in M. sinensis by 59.60 %-114.38 % and 49.91 %-134.60 %, respectively. The treatments T2BC and P2BC emerged as the most effective. Specifically, the P2BC treatment significantly enhanced the soil quality index (SQI > 0.55) across all examined soil layers, markedly improving the overall soil condition. It was observed that T2BC treatment could elevate the SQI to 0.56 at the 0-15 cm depth. The combined amendment shifted the primary influences on plant PTEs accumulation from fungal diversity and soil nutrients to bacterial diversity and the availability of soil PTEs. Characteristic microorganisms identified under the combined treatments were RB41 and Pezizaceae, indicating an increase in both bacterial and fungal diversity. This combination altered the soil microbial community, influencing key metabolic pathways. The combined application of PL and biochar was superior to the TH and biochar combination for the phytoremediation of M. sinensis. This approach not only enhanced the phytoremediation potential but also positively impacted soil health and microbial community, suggesting that the synergistic use of endophytic fungi and biochar is an effective strategy for improving the condition of alkaline soils contaminated with PTEs.

Integrated assessment of potentially toxic elements in soil of the Kangdian metallogenic province: A two-point machine learning approach

The accumulation of potentially toxic elements in soil poses significant risks to ecosystems and human well-being due to their inherent toxicity, widespread presence, and persistence. The Kangdian metallogenic province, famous for its iron-copper deposits, faces soil pollution challenges due to various potentially toxic elements. This study explored a comprehensive approach that combinescombines the spatial prediction by the two-point machine learning method and ecological-health risk assessment to quantitatively assess the comprehensive potential ecological risk index (PERI), the total hazard index (THI) and the total carcinogenic risk (TCR). The proportions of copper (Cu), cadmium (Cd), manganese (Mn), lead (Pb), zinc (Zn), and arsenic (As) concentrations exceeding the risk screening values (RSVs) were 15.03%, 5.1%, 3.72%, 1.24%, 1.1%, and 0.13%, respectively, across the 725 collected samples. Spatial prediction revealed elevated levels of As, Cd, Cu, Pb, Zn, mercury (Hg), and Mn near the mining sites. Potentially toxic elements exert a slight impact on soil, some regions exhibit moderate to significant ecological risk, particularly in the southwest. Children face higher non-carcinogenic and carcinogenic health risks compared to adults. Mercury poses the highest ecological risk, while chromium (Cr) poses the greatest health hazard for all populations. Oral ingestion represents the highest non-oncogenic and oncogenic risks in all age groups. Adults faced acceptable non-carcinogenic risks. Children in the southwest region confront higher health risks, both non-carcinogenic and carcinogenic, from mining activities. Urgent measures are vital to mitigate Hg and Cr contamination while promoting handwashing practices is essential to minimize health risks.

Human health risks of heavy metal(loid)s mediated through crop ingestion in a coal mining area in Eastern China

The heavy metal(loid)s (HMs) in soils can be accumulated by crops grown, which is accompanied by crop ingestion into the human body and then causes harm to human health. Hence, the health risks posed by HMs in three crops for different populations were assessed using Health risk assessment (HRA) model coupled with Monte Carlo simulation. Results revealed that Zn had the highest concentration among three crops; while Ni was the main polluting element in maize and soybean, and As in rice. Non-carcinogenic risk for all populations through rice ingestion was at an "unacceptable" level, and teenagers suffered higher risk than adults and children. All populations through ingestion of three crops might suffer Carcinogenic risk, with the similar order of Total carcinogenic risk (TCR): TCRAdults > TCRTeenagers > TCRChildren. As and Ni were identified as priority control HMs in this study area due to their high contribution rates to health risks. According to the HRA results, the human health risk was associated with crop varieties, HM species, and age groups. Our findings suggest that only limiting the Maximum allowable intake rate is not sufficient to prevent health risks caused by crop HMs, thus more risk precautions are needed.

Plant Growth-Promoting Bacteria Influence Microbial Community Composition and Metabolic Function to Enhance the Efficiency of Hybrid pennisetum Remediation in Cadmium-Contaminated Soil

The green and efficient remediation of soil cadmium (Cd) is an urgent task, and plant-microbial joint remediation has become a research hotspot due to its advantages. High-throughput sequencing and metabolomics have technical advantages in analyzing the microbiological mechanism of plant growth-promoting bacteria in improving phytoremediation of soil heavy metal pollution. In this experiment, a pot trial was conducted to investigate the effects of inoculating the plant growth-promoting bacterium Enterobacter sp. VY on the growth and Cd remediation efficiency of the energy plant Hybrid pennisetum. The test strain VY-1 was analyzed using high-throughput sequencing and metabolomics to assess its effects on microbial community composition and metabolic function. The results demonstrated that Enterobacter sp. VY-1 effectively mitigated Cd stress on Hybrid pennisetum, resulting in increased plant biomass, Cd accumulation, and translocation factor, thereby enhancing phytoremediation efficiency. Analysis of soil physical-chemical properties revealed that strain VY-1 could increase soil total nitrogen, total phosphorus, available phosphorus, and available potassium content. Principal coordinate analysis (PCoA) indicated that strain VY-1 significantly influenced bacterial community composition, with Proteobacteria, Firmicutes, Chloroflexi, among others, being the main differential taxa. Redundancy analysis (RDA) revealed that available phosphorus, available potassium, and pH were the primary factors affecting bacterial communities. Partial Least Squares Discriminant Analysis (PLS-DA) demonstrated that strain VY-1 modulated the metabolite profile of Hybrid pennisetum rhizosphere soil, with 27 differential metabolites showing significant differences, including 19 up-regulated and eight down-regulated expressions. These differentially expressed metabolites were primarily involved in metabolism and environmental information processing, encompassing pathways such as glutamine and glutamate metabolism, α-linolenic acid metabolism, pyrimidine metabolism, and purine metabolism. This study utilized 16S rRNA high-throughput sequencing and metabolomics technology to investigate the impact of the plant growth-promoting bacterium Enterobacter sp. VY-1 on the growth and Cd enrichment of Hybrid pennisetum, providing insights into the regulatory role of plant growth-promoting bacteria in microbial community structure and metabolic function, thereby improving the microbiological mechanisms of phytoremediation.

Changes in the Biology and Susceptibility of Weevil (Cylas formicarius) to the Insecticide Spinetoram as a Response to Cadmium Contamination

The sweet potato weevil Cylas formicarius is a notorious underground pest in sweet potato (Ipomoea batatas L.). However, little is known about the effects of cadmium (Cd) stress on weevil biology and resistance to pesticides and biotic agents. Therefore, we fed sweet potato weevils with Cd-contaminated sweet potato and assessed adult food intake and survival and larval developmental duration and mortality rates, as well as resistance to the insecticide spinetoram and susceptibility to the entomopathogenic fungus Beauveria bassiana. With increasing Cd concentration, the number of adult weevil feeding holes, adult survival and life span, and larval developmental duration decreased significantly, whereas larval mortality rates increased significantly. However, at the lowest Cd concentration (30 mg/L), adult feeding was stimulated. Resistance of adult sweet potato weevils to spinetoram increased at low Cd concentration, whereas Cd contamination did not affect sensitivity to B. bassiana. Thus, Cd contamination affected sweet potato weevil biology and resistance, and further studies will investigate weevil Cd accumulation and detoxification mechanisms.

Long-term effects of compound passivator coupled with silicon fertilizer on the reduction of cadmium and arsenic accumulation in rice and health risk evaluation

Cadmium (Cd) and arsenic (As) are precedence-controlled contaminants in paddy soils, that can easily accumulate in rice grains. Limestone and sepiolite (LS) compound passivator can obviously reduce Cd uptake in rice, whereas Si fertilizer can effectively decrease rice As uptake. Here, the synergistic effects of the LS compound passivator coupled with Si fertilizer (LSCS) on the soil pH and availability of Si, Cd, and As, as well as rice grain Cd and As accumulation and its health risk were studied based on a 3-year consecutive field experiment. The results showed that the LSCS performed the best in terms of synchronously decreasing soil Cd and As availability and rice Cd and As uptake. In the LSCS treatments, soil pH gradually decreased with the rice-planting season, while soil available Cd and As contents gradually increased, suggesting that the influence of LSCS on Cd and As availability gradually weakened with rice cultivation. Nonetheless, the contents of Cd and inorganic As (i-As) in rice grains treated with LSCS were slightly affected by cultivation but were significantly lower than the single treatments of LS compound passivator or Si fertilizer. According to the Cd and As limit standards in food (GB2762-2022), the Cd and i-As content in rice grains can be lowered below the standard by using the 4500 kg/hm2 LS compound passivator coupled with 90 kg/hm2 Si fertilizer in soil and spraying 0.4 g/L Si fertilizer on rice leaves for at least three years. Furthermore, health risk evaluation revealed that LSCS treatments significantly reduced the estimated daily intake, annual excess lifetime cancer risk, and hazard quotient of Cd and i-As in rice grains. These findings suggest that LSCS could be a viable approach for reducing Cd and As accumulation in rice grains and lowering the potential health risks associated with rice.

Sources, effects and present perspectives of heavy metals contamination: Soil, plants and human food chain

Heavy metal (HM) poisoning of agricultural soils poses a serious risk to plant life, human health, and global food supply. When HM levels in agricultural soils get to dangerous levels, it harms crop health and yield. Chromium (Cr), arsenic (As), nickel (Ni), cadmium (Cd), lead (Pb), mercury (Hg), zinc (Zn), and copper (Cu) are the main heavy metals. The environment contains these metals in varying degrees, such as in soil, food, water, and even the air. These substances damage plants and alter soil characteristics, which lowers crop yield. Crop types, growing circumstances, elemental toxicity, developmental stage, soil physical and chemical properties, and the presence and bioavailability of heavy metals (HMs) in the soil solution are some of the factors affecting the amount of HM toxicity in crops. By interfering with the normal structure and function of cellular components, HMs can impede various metabolic and developmental processes. Humans are exposed to numerous serious diseases by consuming these affected plant products. Exposure to certain metals can harm the kidneys, brain, intestines, lungs, liver, and other organs of the human body. This review assesses (1) contamination of heavy metals in soils through different sources, like anthropogenic and natural; (2) the effect on microorganisms and the chemical and physical properties of soil; (3) the effect on plants as well as crop production; and (4) entering the food chain and associated hazards to human health. Lastly, we identified certain research gaps and suggested further study. If people want to feel safe in their surroundings, there needs to be stringent regulation of the release of heavy metals into the environment.

Evaluation of soil pollution by heavy metal using index calculations and multivariate statistical analysis

This study aims to assess the extent of heavy metals (HMs) pollution in soil and identify its potential sources using single and integrated pollution index calculations, and multivariate statistical analysis. The HM concentrations of soil samples were analyzed using ICP-MS. The concentrations (mg/kg) of arsenic (As) ranged from 2.8 to 208.1, cadmium (Cd) from 0.1 to 0.3, cobalt (Co) from 1.9 to 20.5, copper (Cu) from 3.7 to 17.7, nickel (Ni) from 14.7 to 110.6, and lead (Pb) from 6.7 to 37.3. High levels of As contents and physicochemical parameters were found in the northeastern parts of the study area, while levels of other HMs were high in the remaining parts. The HM contents of some soil samples exceeded the average values of basalt and limestone in the study area, as well as the upper, bulk, and lower continental crusts, shale, and soil (worldwide). Multiple index methods were used to assess the pollution risk, and it was determined that some soil samples were moderately to considerably contaminated with varying levels of As, Cd, Co, Ni, and Pb. Multivariate statistical analyses provided that the source of HMs contamination in the soil was a result of geogenic and/or anthropogenic activities. Geogenic sources were associated with weathering rock units, while anthropogenic sources were linked to industrial activities, traffic emissions, and agricultural applications. The findings are useful for detecting contamination by HMs in soil, and they could contribute to future monitoring programs to prevent soil contamination and protect the health of living organisms.

Association between exposure to multiple metals and stress urinary incontinence in women: a mixture approach

There is limited evidence linking exposure to heavy metals, especially mixed metals, to stress urinary incontinence (SUI). This study aimed to explore the relationship between multiple metals exposure and SUI in women. The data were derived from the National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey (NHANES), 2007-2020. In the study, a total of 13 metals were analyzed in blood and urine. In addition, 5155 adult women were included, of whom 2123 (41.2%) suffered from SUI. The logistic regression model and restricted cubic spline (RCS) were conducted to assess the association of single metal exposure with SUI risk. The Bayesian kernel machine regression (BKMR) and weighted quantile sum (WQS) were used to estimate the combined effect of multiple metals exposure on SUI. First, we observed that blood Pb, Hg and urinary Pb, Cd were positively related to SUI risk, whereas urinary W was inversely related by multivariate logistic regression (all p-FDR < 0.05). Additionally, a significant non-linear relationship between blood Hg and SUI risk was observed by RCS analysis. In the co-exposure models, WQS model showed that exposure to metal mixtures in blood [OR (95%CI) = 1.18 (1.06, 1.31)] and urine [OR (95%CI) = 1.18 (1.03, 1.34)] was positively associated with SUI risk, which was consistent with the results of BKMR model. A potential interaction was identified between Hg and Cd in urine. Hg and Cd were the main contributors to the combined effects. In summary, our study indicates that exposure to heavy metal mixtures may increase SUI risk in women.

Emerging insights into the impacts of heavy metals exposure on health, reproductive and productive performance of livestock

Heavy metals, common environmental pollutants with widespread distribution hazards and several health problems linked to them are distinguished from other toxic compounds by their bioaccumulation in living organisms. They pollute the food chain and threaten the health of animals. Biologically, heavy metals exhibit both beneficial and harmful effects. Certain essential heavy metals such as Co, Mn, Se, Zn, and Mg play crucial roles in vital physiological processes in trace amounts, while others like As, Pb, Hg, Cd, and Cu are widely recognized for their toxic properties. Regardless of their physiological functions, an excess intake of all heavy metals beyond the tolerance limit can lead to toxicity. Animals face exposure to heavy metals through contaminated feed and water, primarily as a result of anthropogenic environmental pollution. After ingestion heavy metals persist in the body for an extended duration and the nature of exposure dictates whether they induce acute or chronic, clinical or subclinical, or subtle toxicities. The toxic effects of metals lead to disruption of cellular homeostasis through the generation of free radicals that develop oxidative stress. In cases of acute heavy metal poisoning, characteristic clinical symptoms may arise, potentially culminating in the death of animals with corresponding necropsy findings. Chronic toxicities manifest as a decline in overall body condition scoring and a decrease in the production potential of animals. Elevated heavy metal levels in consumable animal products raise public health concerns. Timely diagnosis, targeted antidotes, and management strategies can significantly mitigate heavy metal impact on livestock health, productivity, and reproductive performance.

Metagenomic and biochemical analyses reveal the potential of silicon to alleviate arsenic toxicity in rice (Oryza sativa L.)

Arsenic (As) pollution in agricultural systems poses a serious threat to crop productivity and food safety. Silicon (Si) has been reported to mitigate toxic effects of heavy metals in plants. However, the mechanisms behind Si-mediated alleviation of As toxicity in rice (Oryza sativa L.) remain poorly understood. Here, we performed metagenomic and biochemical analyses to investigate the potential of Si in alleviating As toxicity to rice plants. As exposure reduced plant growth, chlorophyll contents, antioxidant enzyme levels and soil enzymes activity, while increasing reactive oxygen species (ROS) activity and inducing alterations in the rhizosphere microbiome of rice seedlings. Silicon amendments enhanced rice growth (24%), chlorophyll a (25%), and chlorophyll b (26.7%), indicating enhanced photosynthetic capacity. Si amendments also led to the upregulation of antioxidant enzymes viz., superoxide dismutase (15.4%), and peroxidase (15.6%), resulting in reduced ROS activity and oxidative stress compared to the As-treated control. Furthermore, Si treatment reduced uptake and translocation of As in rice plants, as evidenced by the analysis of elemental contents. Microscopic examination of leaf and root ultrastructure showed that Si mitigated As-induced cellular damage and maintained normal morphology. Metagenomic analysis of the rice rhizosphere microbiome revealed that Si application modulated composition and diversity of microbial communities e.g., Proteobacteria, Actinobacteria, and Firmicutes. Additionally, Si amendments upregulated the relative expression levels of OsGSH, OsPCs, OsNIP1;1 and OsNIP3;3 genes, while the expression levels of the OsLis1 and OsLis2 genes were significantly downregulated compared with As-treated rice plants. Overall, these findings contribute to our understanding of Si-mediated plant resilience to As stress and offer potential strategies for sustainable agriculture in As-contaminated regions.

The exposure risk of heavy metals to insect pests and their impact on pests occurrence and cross-tolerance to insecticides: A review

Heavy metal (HM) pollution is a severe global environmental issue. HMs in the environment can transfer along the food chain, which aggravates their ecotoxicological effect and exposes the insects to heavy metal stress. In addition to their growth-toxic effects, HMs have been reported as abiotic environmental factors that influence the implementation of integrated pest management strategies, including microbial control, enemy insect control, and chemical control. This will bring new challenges to pest control and further highlight the ecotoxicological impact of HM pollution. In this review, the relationship between HM pollution and insecticide tolerance in pests was analyzed. Our focus is on the risks of HM exposure to pests, pests tolerance to insecticides under HM exposure, and the mechanisms underlying the effect of HM exposure on pests tolerance to insecticides. We infer that HM exposure, as an initial stressor, induces cross-tolerance in pests to subsequent insecticide stress. Additionally, the priming effect of HM exposure on enzymes associated with insecticide metabolism underlies cross-tolerance formation. This is a new interdisciplinary field between pollution ecology and pest control, with an important guidance value for optimizing pest control strategies in HM polluted areas.

Distribution of nitrate/nitrite and toxic metals in the soil-potato system and its health risk assessment in Iran

Potato is one of the essential food products whose health quality is greatly influenced by soil contamination and properties. In the current study, we have investigated the physicochemical characteristics of agricultural areas and the accumulation of nitrite/nitrate and metals in potato products in Hamedan, Iran. After determining the physicochemical characteristics of soil samples from four agricultural regions of Hamedan, 48 potato samples were collected from these regions. The heavy metals and nitrate/nitrite content were determined by ICP-OES and calorimetric methods, respectively. A negative correlation was observed between soil pH changes with nitrite/nitrate content and the accumulation of some heavy elements in potatoes. Furthermore, a positive correlation was found between soil phosphorus content and lead accumulation in potato. In present study, the amounts of lead, nitrate, and nitrite in 83.3%, 56%, and 12% of the collected samples were higher than the permissible limit reported by the World Health Organization (WHO), respectively. The EDI range for nitrate and nitrite was determined to be 130-260 and 1.4-2.7 µg/kg/day, respectively, which is much lower than the RfD set by the US Environmental Protection Agency (USEPA) for nitrite and nitrate. Among metal pollutants, the toxic risk caused by lead in potato consumers was higher than the threshold limit. In conclusion, our findings showed that the physicochemical characteristics of the soil could effectively increase the availability of metal pollutants and nitrite/nitrate to the potato product and significantly reduce its health quality. Therefore, monitoring these pollutants in the soil-potato system, preventing the entry of industrial wastewater, and managing the use of agricultural fertilizers can effectively improve the health of this product for consumers.
