Structural study of humic acids during composting of activated sludge-green waste: elemental analysis, FTIR and 13C NMR

Neglected sludge solid phase in sludge pretreatment process: Physicochemical characterization and mechanism study of its role in anaerobic degradation

The low anaerobic digestion efficiency of the solid phase separated from pre-treated sludge indicates the need to explore other suitable resource utilization pathways for sludge solid phase. However, there is a lack of comprehensive and in-depth research on the physicochemical properties of sludge solid phase. This study comprehensively analyzes the characteristics of sludge solid phase and elucidates the mechanism of sludge solid phase in the anaerobic degradation of toxic wastewater. The results show that the surface free energy of sludge solid phase after different pre-treatments is mainly contributed by Lewis acid-base hydration free energy. The distribution of proteins on the surface of sludge solid phase plays a major role in the adhesion between sludge solid particles. Metal ions in the sludge solid phase are mainly present in the exchange state, followed by the carbonate state and the organics-bound state. The sludge solid phase obtained by sludge pH 12 + 150 °C treatment has the highest conductivity (1.36 mS/m) and capacitance (25.51 μF/g), mainly due to the presence of melanoidins in the sludge solid phase, which has similar semiquinone radicals to humic acids, thus increasing conductivity. The addition of sludge solid phase promotes an increase in cumulative methane production and rate of methane production. The sludge solid phase might play a role of an auxiliary carbon source acting as an adsorbent to buffer against toxicity inhibition and facilitate electron transfer. This study reveals the characteristics of sludge solid phase and its role in anaerobic digestion, providing theoretical guidance for finding suitable resource utilization pathways for sludge solid phase.

Effects of different proportions of fruit tree branches on nicotine content and microbial diversity during composting of tobacco waste

Adding fruit tree branches to the compost pile in appropriate proportions is one of the methods used to address the challenge of tobacco waste recycling. However, the effects of different proportions of fruit tree branches on nicotine concentration and microbial diversity during tobacco waste composting have not been reported. In this study, a composting system with tobacco waste, cow dung, and fruit tree branches was established in a laboratory fermenter to assess the impact of adding 10%, 20%, and 30% fruit tree branches on quantity changes. In addition, the relationships between nicotine degradation, compost properties, enzyme activities, and microbial diversities were determined using biochemical assay methods and high-throughput sequencing. The results showed that adding appropriate proportions of fruit branch segments affected changes in physical and chemical properties during composting and promoted tobacco waste compost maturity. Aerobic composting effectively degraded nicotine in tobacco waste. Increased proportions of fruit branch segments led to elevations in nicotine degradation rates and enzyme activities related to lignocellulose degradation. The addition of fruit branches influenced the relative abundance and species of dominant bacteria and fungi at the phylum and genus levels. However, it did not significantly affect the relative abundance of the main bacterial genera involved in nicotine degradation. Nevertheless, it reduced the sensitivity of enzyme activity to nicotine content within heaps, increasing reliance on total nitrogen changes. The results of this study provide a theoretical basis for the utilization of tobacco waste in composting systems and indicate that fruit tree branches can enhance nicotine degradation efficiency during tobacco waste composting.

Effect of initial moisture content, resulting from different ratios of vegetable waste to maize straw, on compost was mediated by composting temperatures and microbial communities at low temperatures

Owing to the huge amounts and perishable character of vegetable wastes, composting is one of the best options for recycling vegetable wastes post-harvest. The initial moisture content (MC) is critical for optimizing composting process, but the effect of high MC in undehydrated vegetable wastes on composting was rarely reported. For this, the plant-scale windrows were prepared by mixing cauliflower waste and maize straw at different ratios to control initial MC of 70 % (T1-70) and 80 % (T2-80), respectively, and composted in winter. As composting progressed, substantial organic matter degradation, progressive humification, decreases in electrical conductivity and increases of pH and germination index (GI) were observed in both treatments. Nonetheless, T1-70 accelerated heating rate early during composting, prolonged high temperature period (>50 °C) by 30 d, thus increased the harmless level of composting, and significantly improved the humification of end-products compared to T2-80. Results also revealed that T1-70 activated more indigenous microbes and enhanced microbial interactions early during composting, with the fungi enriched in T1-70 playing an important role in accelerating the composting process. Remarkably, the difference in composting temperatures, humification degree, and microbial communities between the two treatments was most significant during the maturation phase. In this phase, MWH_CFBk5, Planktosalinus, Pseudopedobacter, and Luteimonas enriched in T1-70 were positively correlated with humification indices. It is suggested that the effect of initial MC, resulting from different ratios of vegetable waste to maize straw, on their composting was mediated by the composting temperature and microbial communities at low temperatures.

Co-composting of green waste and biogas waste: physical, chemical parameters and quality of ripe compound

The impact of adding biogas waste (BW) to green waste (GW) composting to increase nitrogen supplementation and improve mature compost quality was investigated. Conducted over 90 days using static windrows, the experiment compared treatments with GW alone (T1) and GW supplemented with BW (T2 and T3). The results showed that the addition of BW increased temperatures, improved the C/N ratio, and expedited the stabilization process compared to T1. Furthermore, the addition of BW led to significant degradation of hemicellulose (up to 39.98%) and cellulose (up to 27.63%) compared to GW alone. Analysis of Fourier-transform infrared (FTIR) spectra revealed the presence of aromatic, phenolic, aliphatic, and polysaccharide structures in the compost, with BW supplementation enhancing these characteristics. Importantly, the germination index (GI) assessment indicated that the compounds produced were not toxic and instead exhibited stimulatory effects on seed germination. Overall, the findings suggest that supplementing GW composting with BW can enhance the quality and efficacy of the composting process, resulting in compost with desirable properties for agricultural use.

Investigation of the migration of natural organic matter-iron-antimony nano-colloids in acid mine drainage

Colloids can potentially affect the efficacy of traditional acid mine drainage (AMD) treatment methods such as precipitation and filtration. However, it is unclear how colloids affect antimony (Sb) migration in AMD, especially when natural organic matter (NOM) is present. To conduct an in-depth investigation on the formation and migration behavior of NOM, iron (Fe), Sb and NOM-Fe-Sb colloids in AMD, experiments were performed under simulated AMD conditions. The results demonstrate significant variations in the formation of NOM-Fe-Sb colloids (1-3-450 nm) as the molar ratio of carbon to iron (C/Fe) increases within acidic conditions (pH = 3). Increasing the C/Fe molar ratio from 0.1 to 1.2 resulted in a decrease in colloid formation but an increase in particulate fraction. The distribution of colloidal Sb, Sb(III), and Fe(III) within the NOM-Fe-Sb colloids decreased from 68 % to 55 %, 72 % to 57 %, and 68 % to 55 %, respectively. Their distribution in the particulate fraction increased from 28 % to 42 %, 21 % to 34 %, and 8 % to 27 %. XRD, FTIR, and SEM-EDS analyses demonstrated that NOM facilitates the formation and crystallization of Fe3O4 and FeSbO4 crystalline phases. The formation of the colloids depended on pH. Our results indicate that NOM-Fe-Sb colloids can form when the pH ≤ 4, and the proportion of colloidal Sb fraction within the NOM-Fe-Sb colloids increased from 9 % to a maximum of 73 %. Column experiments show that the concentration of NOM-Fe-Sb colloids reaches its peak and remains stable at approximately 3.5 pore volumes (PVs), facilitating the migration of Sb in the porous media. At pH ≥ 5, stable NOM-Fe-Sb colloids do not form, and the proportion of colloidal Sb fraction decreases from 7 % to 0 %. This implies that as pH increases, the electrostatic repulsion between colloidal particles weakens, resulting in a reduction in the colloidal fraction and an increase in the particulate fraction. At higher pH values (pH ≥ 5), the repulsive forces between colloidal particles nearly disappear, promoting particle aggregation. The findings of this study provide important scientific evidence for understanding the migration behavior of NOM-Fe-Sb colloids in AMD. As the pH gradually shifts from acidic to near-neutral pH during the remediation process of AMD, these results could be applied to develop new strategies for this purpose.

Comparison of ATR-FTIR and NIR spectroscopy for identification of microplastics in biosolids

Biosolids are considered a potentially major input of microplastics (MPs) to agricultural soils. Our study aims to identify the polymeric origin of MPs extracted from biosolid samples by comparing their Attenuated Total Reflection (ATR) - Fourier-transform infrared (FTIR) spectra with the corresponding near-infrared (NIR) spectra. The reflectance spectra were preprocessed by Savitzky-Golay (SG), first derivative (FD) and compared with analogous spectra acquired on a set of fifty-two selected commercial plastic (SCP) materials collected from readily available products. According to the results portrayed in radar chart and built from both ATR-FTIR and NIR spectral datasets, the MPs showed high correlations with polymers such as polyethylene (LDPE, HDPE), polyethylene terephthalate (PET), polystyrene (PS), polypropylene (PP) and polyamide (PA), determined in SCP samples. Each unknown MP sample had on average three or more links to several types of SCP, according to the correlation coefficients for each polymer ranging from 0.7 up to 1. The comparison analysis classified the majority of MPs as composed mainly by LDPE/HDPE, according to the top correlation coefficients (r > 0.90). PP and PET were better identified with NIR than ATR-FTIR. In contrast to ATR-FTIR analysis, NIR was unable to identify PS. Based on these results, the primary sources of MPs in the biosolids could be identified as discarded consumer packaging (containers, bags, bottles) and fibers from laundry, disposable glove, and cleaning cloth. SYNOPSIS: Microplastics (MPs) are considered contaminants of emerging concern. This study compares two simple and fast spectroscopy techniques to identify microplastics in the biosolid matrix.

Novel insights into the mechanism of laccase-driven rhizosphere humification for alleviating wheat 17β-estradiol contamination

Global-scale crop contamination with environmental estrogens has posed a huge risk to agri-food safety and human health. Laccase is regarded as an unexceptionable biocatalyst for regulating pollution and expediting humification, but the knowledge of estrogen bioremediation and C storage strengthened by laccase-driven rhizosphere humification (LDRH) remains largely unknown. Herein, a greenhouse microcosm was performed to explore the migration and fate of 17β-estradiol (E2) in water-wheat (Triticum aestivum L.) matrices by LDRH. Compared to the non-added laccase, the pseudo-first-order decay rate constants of E2 in the rhizosphere solution after 10 and 50 μM exposures by LDRH increased from 0.03 and 0.02 h-1 to 0.36 and 0.09 h-1, respectively. Furthermore, LDRH conferred higher yield, polymerizability, O-containing groups, and functional-C signals in the humified precipitates, because it accelerated the formation of highly complex precipitates by radical-controlled continuous polymerization. In particular, not only did LDRH mitigate the phytotoxicity of E2, but it also diminished the metabolic load of E2 in wheat tissues. This was attributed to the rapid attenuation of E2 in the rhizosphere solution during LDRH, which limited E2 uptake and accumulation in each subcellular fraction of the wheat roots and shoots. Although several typical intermediate products such as estrone, estriol, and E2 oligomers were detected in roots, only small-molecule species were found in shoots, evidencing that the polymeric products of E2 were unable to be translocated acropetally due to the vast hydrophobicity and biounavailability. For the first time, our study highlights a novel, eco-friendly, and sustainable candidate for increasing the low-C treatment of organics in rhizosphere microenvironments and alleviating the potential risks of estrogenic contaminants in agroenvironments.

Studies on the humic acid structure and microbial nutrient restriction mechanism during organic-inorganic co-composting

The effects of inorganic fertilizer addition method on the organic-inorganic co-composting process, especially the structure of humic acid and the mechanism of microbial nutrient restriction, are unclear. In this article, the effects of one-time and fractional addition of inorganic fertilizer on the structure of humic acid, extracellular enzyme activity, extracellular enzyme stoichiometry and the culturable growth-promoting bacteria during organic-inorganic co-composting were determined. The results showed that the addition of inorganic fertilizer promoted the humification degree of compost. Compared nitrogen with phosphorus, the fermentation microorganism behaved as N-restricted throughout the process. Compared one-time addition with fractional addition of inorganic treatments, the TOC, WSOC, NO3--N and humic acid content in the mature compost of the one-time addition treatment were higher. The contents of nitrogen, oxygen, the carboxyl functional groups, aromatic compounds, and the nitrogen/carbon atomic ratio in the humic acid structure increased as the composting process proceeded, while the contents of hydrogen, aliphatic substances, and the hydrogen/carbon atomic ratio decreased, and the elemental composition and structural changes of humic acids indicated that the humification degree of the one-time addition treatment was higher. The addition of inorganic fertilizer increased the relative abundances of Bacillus megaterium and Bacillus subtilis in the mature compost.

Effective and low-toxicity: A membrane cleaning method using peroxymonosulfate catalytic chlorination

In chemical membrane cleaning, the challenge is to efficiently remove irreversible fouling while minimizing the impact on membrane materials. Particularly, traditional hypochlorite cleaning will further lead to the generation of toxic halogenated by-products. To address these issues, a combined system composed of peroxymonosulfate and chloride (PMS/Cl-) was applied to clean irreversible-humic-acid-fouled polyethersulfone (PES) membranes. After fouled membranes were soaked for 1 h in a PMS/Cl- solution (10 mM/15 mM) at 25 °C under neutral conditions, 94% flux recovery and 96% resistance removal were realized. Surface properties of virgin and cleaned membranes were very similar, confirming the effectiveness of the PMS/Cl- solution in removing irreversible foulants. The stability of membrane separation performance during multiple fouling and cleaning cycles further confirmed the minimal impact on membrane materials. Rapid diminution of the peaks centered in the region of fulvic-like and humic-like components, monitored under 3D-fluorescence for the cleaning solution, was attributed to PMS-catalyzed chlorination, thereby revealing the primary foulant detachment mechanism. Crucially, the approach exhibited lower toxicity than hypochlorite, as evidenced by reduced halogenated by-products and lower acute toxicity to Photobacterium phosphoreum T3. Overall, this novel cleaning system is promising for the efficient and environmentally friendly removal of irreversible organic foulants in practical water-treatment.

Brown sugar as a carbon source can make agricultural organic waste compost enter the secondary thermophilic stage and promote compost decomposition

To enhance the efficiency of composting agricultural organic waste (AOW), this study aimed to examine the impact of inoculating tomato straw compost with two distinct microbial agents: ZymoZone (ZZ), a composite microbial agent derived from the straw compost and Effective Microorganisms (EM), a commercial microbial agent. Furthermore, in order to reactivate the microorganisms within the compost during the initial high temperature phase, 10% brown sugar was introduced as a carbon source. The objective of this addition was to assess its influence on the composting process. The findings revealed that compared to the control (CK) group, the ZZ and EM treatments extended the first high-temperature phase by 2 and 1 day, respectively. Furthermore, with the addition of 10% brown sugar, the ZZ and EM treatments remained in the second high-temperature phase for 8 and 7 days, respectively, while the CK treatment had already entered the cooling stage by then. Notably, the inoculation of microbial agents and the addition of brown sugar substantially augmented the activity of lignocellulose-related hydrolases, thereby promoting the degradation of lignocellulose in the ZZ and EM treatment groups. This was confirmed by FTIR analysis, which demonstrated that the addition of microbial agents facilitated the degradation of specific substances, leading to reduced absorbance in the corresponding spectra. XRD analysis further indicated a notable reduction in cellulose crystallinity for both the ZZ (8.00%) and EM (7.73%) treatments. Hence, the incorporation of microbial agents and brown sugar in tomato straw compost effectively enhances the composting process and improves the quality of compost products.

Electric field applications enhance the electron transfer capacity of dissolved organic matter in sludge compost

Dissolved organic matter (DOM) plays an important role in heavy metal passivation and organic pollutant degradation owing to its redox ability. The structure and composition of DOM are determinants of redox ability changes during composting. Electric field-assisted aerobic composting (EAAC) has been shown to promote the degradation and humification of organic matter in compost. However, how EAAC affects the redox ability of DOM remains unclear. Hence, electron transfer capacity (ETC) of DOM extracted from EAAC was studied using the electrochemical method. Various spectral methods, such as excitation-emission matrix and ultraviolet and visible spectrophotometry were used to study the relationship of ETC with the compositional and structural changes of DOM. Results indicated that EAAC enhanced ETC of DOM at the later stage of composting, and ETC of DOM extracted from the final EAAC product was 10.4% higher than that of the control group. Spectral and correlation analyses showed that EAAC resulted in structural and compositional changes of DOM, and humification degree, aromatic compounds, molecular weight, and fulvic- and humic-like substance contents were improved in EAAC. This conversion increased ETC of DOM. Results of this study will contribute to the understanding of the redox of DOM and in expanding the application of EAAC products.

Compost-derived humic and fulvic acid coupling with Shewanella oneidensis MR-1 for the bioreduction of Cr(Ⅵ)

The compost-derived humic acids (HA) and fulvic acids (FA) contain abundant active functional groups with strong redox capacity, which can function as an electron shuttles for promoting the reduction of heavy metals, thus changing the form of the pollutants in the environment and reducing their toxicity. Therefore, in this study, UV-Vis, FTIR, 3D-EEM, electrochemical analysis were applied to study the spectral characteristics and electron transfer capacity (ETC) of HA and FA. Upon analysis, the results showed an increasing trend of ETC and humification degree (SUVA254) for both HA and FA during composting. However, the aromatic degree (SUVA280) of HA was higher than FA. After 7 days of culture, 37.95% of Cr (Ⅵ) was reduced by Shewanella oneidensis MR-1 (MR-1) alone. Whereas, only if HA or FA existed, the diminution of Cr (Ⅵ) reached 37.43% and 40.55%, respectively. However, the removal rate of Cr (Ⅵ) by HA/MR-1 and FA/MR-1 increased to 95.82% and 93.84% respectively. It indicated that HA and FA acted as electron shuttles, mediating the transfer of electrons between MR-1 and the final electron acceptor, effectively facilitating the bioreduction of Cr (Ⅵ) to Cr (Ⅲ) and also determined via correlation analysis. This study suggested compost-derived HA and FA coupling with MR-1 exhibited excellent performance for the bioreduction of Cr (Ⅵ) to Cr (Ⅲ).

Simultaneous degradation of microplastics and sludge during wet air oxidation

Microplastics (MPs) generated from daily life are commonly collected by urban sewage pipe networks and then transfer to sludge in wastewater treatment plants. Conventional biochemical treatment processes cannot degrade MPs effectively, causing an ecological risk via sludge land use. Wet air oxidation (WAO) is a promising sludge treatment technology with a strong ability to decompose complex organic matter, but its potential for the removal of MPs in sludge was unclear. In this study, three common MPs (polyethylene, polystyrene, and polyethylene terephthalate, which are called PEMPs, PSMPs, and PETMPs) were added into the sludge samples (1 g MP in 180 mL sludge), to test the effects of WAO on sludge and MPs. The results showed that WAO simultaneously degraded sludge and the PEMPs, and the two degradation processes were relatively independent when oxygen was supplied adequately. The dissolution of PSMPs and organic matter in sludge was not affected by each other, but the degradation rate was slowed down due to the interaction of ketones and benzene compounds. The hydrolysis of sludge and PETMPs was accelerated, while the hydrolyzed products such as terephthalic acid were oxidized without interfering with each other. No obvious MPs remained in the effluent, and volatile fatty acids (VFAs) were the main components, among which acetic acid accounted for 90%. When the sludge was treated with PEMPs, PSMPs, or PETMPs, the concentration of acetic acid finally accounted for 45%, 21%, and 18% of DOC. Overall, MPs can be degraded or even mineralized during sludge WAO, and humic acid derivatives, acetate, and other small molecules of alcohols, ketones, or aldehydes were the typical intermediates.

Synthesis of artificial humic acid-urea complex improves nitrogen utilization

The inefficient use of conventional nitrogen (N) fertilizers leads to N enrichment in the soil, resulting in N loss via runoff, volatilization and leaching. While using artificial humic acid to prepare novel N fertilizer is a good choice to improve its efficiency, the high heterogeneity of artificial humic acid limits its structural analysis and utilization efficiency. To solve above problems, this work mainly carried out the fractionation experiments, melt penetration experiments and soil incubation experiments. The results revealed that four fractions with different aromatization degree and molecular weights were obtained by the newly proposed continuous dissolution method, particular in the extraction solution of pH = 3-4, which were extracted with the highest aromatization degree. Furthermore, artificial humic acid urea complex fertilizers prepared at pH = 3-4 significantly improved the release of NH4+-N by 38.32% on days 7 and NO3--N by 10.30% on days 14, compared to urea application. The highly aromatic complex fertilizer with loading of urea-N was able to supply more inorganic N to the soil on days 3-14 (low molecular weight N) and to maintain a higher N content on days 70 (highly aromatized N). This can partially offset the mineralization of readily available organic N, buffering the immobilization of inorganic N from the soil when unstable organic compounds (e.g. conventional urea) were incorporated. A-HAU3-4 addition on days 70, Proteobacteria and Actinobacteriota were found to be the dominant phylum in the soil and the relative abundance of Endophytic bacteria was increased, which was conducive to the improvement of soil N utilization efficiency and soil N sequestration. Therefore, the preparation of artificial humic urea fertilizer with high aromatization degree or low molecular weight were an effective way to improve N utilization efficiency in the initial stages of soil incubation and maintain N fixation in the later stages of soil incubation. The future application of the strategy presented by this study would have an important ecological significance for alleviating agricultural N pollution.

Effect of inoculating thermophilic bacterial consortia on compost efficiency and quality

The objective of this study was to investigate the potential effects of thermophilic bacterial consortia on compost efficiency and quality. The application of bacterial consortia resulted in an earlier onset of the thermophilic period (THP), an increased upper temperature limit, and an extended duration of the THP by 3-5 days compared to the control group (CK). Microbial inoculation significantly improved the efficiency of organic matter degradation, as well as the content of water-soluble nitrogen (WSN) and humic acid-carbon (HAC). In the case of consortium Ⅱ inoculation (T2), the activities of cellobiohydrolase, β-glucosidase, and protease were increased by 81.81 %, 70.13 %, and 74.09 % at the THP respectively compared to CK. During the maturation stage, T2 also exhibited the highest PV, n/PIII, n value (1.33) and HAC content (39.53 mg·g-1), indicating that inoculation of consortium Ⅱ effectively promoted substrate maturity and product quality. Moreover, this inoculation effectively optimized the bacterial communities, particularly the growth of Planococcus, Chelatococcus, and Chelativorans during the composting, which were involved in carbon and nitrogen conversion or HAC synthesis. Carbohydrate and amino acid metabolism, and membrane transport were predominant in the consortia-inoculated samples, with an increased gene abundance, suggesting that inoculation contributed to promoting the biodegradation of lignocellulose and the exchange of favorable factors. In conclusion, this study demonstrates that inoculating thermophilic bacterial consortia has a positive impact on enhancing the resource utilization efficiency of agricultural waste and improving the quality of compost products.

Role in aromatic metabolites biodegradation and adverse implication of denitrifying microbiota in kitchen waste composting

BACKGROUND

Understanding the functional diversity, composition, and dynamics of microbiome is critical for quality in composting. Denitrifying microbiota, possessing multiple metabolic pathways simultaneously. Denitrification-based biodegradation of aromatic metabolites has been widely applied in the bioremediation of sediments. However, role in biodegradation of denitrifying microbiota in kitchen waste composting remain unclear. In this study, microbiome and metabolome were used to comprehensively decipher the relationship of denitrifying microbiota and aromatic metabolites, and its implication in kitchen waste (KW) composting.

RESULTS

This study was investigated by adjusting moisture content 60% as control test (CK), 70% as denitrification test (DE). In addition, one tests referred as DE + C, which received 10% of biochar to amend denitrification. Results indicated the quantities of denitrification genes narG were 1.22 × 10⁸ copies/g in DE at the 55th day, which were significantly higher than that in CK and DE + C (P < 0.05). Similarly, the abundance of nirK gene also significantly increased in DE (P < 0.05). The relative abundance of denitrification-related microbes in DE was higher than that in CK, DE + C could weaken their abundance. Metabolomics results demonstrated that metabolites were downgraded in aromatic amino acid and catechin metabolic pathways in DE, which were identified as precursors to synthesis key product fulvic acid. The concentrations of fulvic acid dramatically decreased 21.05 mg/g in DE comparison with CK. Biochar addition alleviated the biodegradation of aromatic metabolites and reduced the utilization of fulvic acid. Integrative analyses of metabolomics and microbiome suggested that the microbiota involved in nitrite reduction pathway was vital for the biodegradation aromatic metabolites. Mantel test verified that NO₃^--N, moisture content, eta, environmental factors were important drivers behind the changes in the denitrifying microbiota biodegradation function.

CONCLUSION

The data confirm the biodegradation function of denitrifying microbiota led to the loss of core product fulvic acid in KW composting, which highlighted the adverse role and implication of denitrification for composting humification. Control of denitrification with biochar was recommended to improve composting quality.

Biochar Promotes Arsenopyrite Weathering in Simulated Alkaline Soils: Electrochemical Mechanism and Environmental Implications

Oxidation dissolution of arsenopyrite (FeAsS) is one of the important sources of arsenic contamination in soil and groundwater. Biochar, a commonly used soil amendment and environmental remediation agent, is widespread in ecosystems, where it participates in and influences the redox-active geochemical processes of sulfide minerals associated with arsenic and iron. This study investigated the critical role of biochar on the oxidation process of arsenopyrite in simulated alkaline soil solutions by a combination of electrochemical techniques, immersion tests, and solid characterizations. Polarization curves indicated that the elevated temperature (5-45 °C) and biochar concentration (0-1.2 g·L^-1) accelerated arsenopyrite oxidation. This is further confirmed by electrochemical impedance spectroscopy, which showed that biochar substantially reduced the charge transfer resistance in the double layer, resulting in smaller activation energy (E_a = 37.38-29.56 kJ·mol^-1) and activation enthalpy (ΔH* = 34.91-27.09 kJ·mol^-1). These observations are likely attributed to the abundance of aromatic and quinoid groups in biochar, which could reduce Fe(III) and As(V) as well as adsorb or complex with Fe(III). This hinders the formation of passivation films consisting of iron arsenate and iron (oxyhydr)oxide. Further observation found that the presence of biochar exacerbates acidic drainage and arsenic contamination in areas containing arsenopyrite. This study highlighted the possible negative impact of biochar on soil and water, suggesting that the different physicochemical properties of biochar produced from different feedstock and under different pyrolysis conditions should be taken into account before large-scale applications to prevent potential risks to ecology and agriculture.

Selenite reduction and biogenesis of selenium-nanoparticles by different size groups of aerobic granular sludge under aerobic conditions

Microbial transformations play a vital role in Se cycle in the environment and decrease the solubility and toxicity of Se oxyanions by converting to elemental selenium (Se⁰) nanostructures. Aerobic granular sludge (AGS) has attracted interest due to efficient reduction of selenite to biogenic Se⁰ (Bio-Se⁰) and retention in bioreactors. Here, selenite removal, biogenesis of Bio-Se⁰ and entrapment of Bio-Se⁰ by different size groups of aerobic granules were investigated to optimize biological treatment process for Se-laden wastewaters. Furthermore, a bacterial strain showing high selenite tolerance and reduction was isolated and characterized. Removal of selenite and conversion to Bio-Se⁰ were achieved by all the size groups of granules ranging from 0.12 mm to 2 mm and above. However, selenite reduction and Bio-Se⁰ formation were rapid and more efficient with large aerobic granules (≥0.5 mm). The formed Bio-Se⁰ was majorly associated with the large granules, due to better entrapment capabilities. In contrast, the Bio-Se⁰ formed by the small granules (≤0.2 mm) was distributed both in the granules and aqueous phase because of ineffective entrapment. Scanning electron microscope and energy dispersive X-ray (SEM-EDX) analysis confirmed formation of Se⁰ spheres and association with the granules. Efficient selenite reduction and entrapment of Bio-Se⁰ was related to prevalent anoxic/anaerobic zones in the large granules. A bacterial strain showing efficient SeO₃^2- reduction of up to 15 mM SeO₃^2- under aerobic conditions was identified as Microbacterium azadirachtae. SEM-EDX analysis confirmed the formation and entrapment of Se⁰ nanospheres (size: 100 ± 5 nm) in the extracellular matrix. The cells immobilized in alginate beads showed effective SeO₃^2- reduction and Bio-Se⁰ entrapment. Efficient reduction and immobilization of bio-transformed metalloids by large AGS and AGS-borne bacteria implicates prospective use in bioremediation of metal(loid) oxyanions and bio-recovery.

Treatment of amoxicillin-containing wastewater by Trichoderma strains selected from activated sludge

This study screened a Trichoderma strain (Trichoderma pubescens DAOM 166162) from activated sludge to solve the limitation of traditional biological processes in the treatment of amoxicillin (AMO) containing wastewater. The mechanism of the removal of AMO wastewater by T. pubescens DAOM 166162 (TPC) was studied. AMO resulted in a higher protein percentage in the extracellular polymeric substances (EPS) secreted by TPC, which facilitated the removal of AMO from the wastewater. Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy and excitation-emission matrix were used to characterize EPS produced by metabolizing different carbon sources. It was found that the hydroxyl group was the primary functional group in EPS. The life activity of TPC was the cause of the pH rise. The main pathway of degradation of AMO by TPC was the hydroxyl group uncoupling the lactam ring and the hydrolysis of AMO in an alkaline environment. The removal efficiency of AMO in wastewater by TPC was >98 % (24 h), of which the biodegradation efficiency was 70.01 ± 1.48 %, and the biosorption efficiency was 28.44 ± 2.97 %. In general, TPC is an effective strain for treating wastewater containing AMO. This research provides a new idea for AMO wastewater treatment.

Enhanced removal of arsenic and cadmium from contaminated soils using a soluble humic substance coupled with chemical reductant

Soil washing is an efficient, economical, and green remediation technology for removing several heavy metal (loid)s from contaminated industrial sites. The extraction of green and efficient washing agents from low-cost feedback is crucially important. In this study, a soluble humic substance (HS) extracted from leonardite was first tested to wash soils (red soil, fluvo-aquic soil, and black soil) heavily contaminated with arsenic (As) and cadmium (Cd). A D-optimal mixture design was investigated to optimize the washing parameters. The optimum removal efficiencies of As and Cd by single HS washing were found to be 52.58%-60.20% and 58.52%-86.69%, respectively. Furthermore, a two-step sequential washing with chemical reductant NH₂OH•HCl coupled with HS (NH₂OH•HCl + HS) was performed to improve the removal efficiency of As and Cd. The two-step sequential washing significantly enhanced the removal of As and Cd to 75.25%-81.53% and 64.53%-97.64%, which makes the residual As and Cd in soil below the risk control standards for construction land. The two-step sequential washing also effectively controlled the mobility and bioavailability of residual As and Cd. However, the activities of soil catalase and urease significantly decreased after the NH₂OH•HCl + HS washing. Follow-up measures such as soil neutralization could be applied to relieve and restore the soil enzyme activity. In general, the two-step sequential soil washing with NH₂OH•HCl + HS is a fast and efficient method for simultaneously removing high content of As and Cd from contaminated soils.

Dissolved organic matter evolution can reflect the maturity of compost: Insight into common composting technology and material composition

Dissolved organic matter (DOM) can clearly reflect composting components changes, thus it is supposed to indicate the humification process during composting. To demonstrate this, three compost mixtures and two techniques were arranged. DOM evolution was detected by three spectral techniques. X-ray diffraction (XRD) showed that the crystal structure substances decreased gradually during the composting, including cellulose, struvite, sylvine, quartz, and calcite; Specifically, the struvite was found, which was conducive to the fixation of nitrogen and phosphorus. Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR) and three-dimensional fluorescence spectroscopy (3D-EEM) further showed that pig manure-based mixtures, added cabbage, and windrow composting are beneficial to sugar, protein, fulvic acid, and soluble microbial by-products decompose and humic acids produce. This process was closely related to the change of physical-chemical parameters (temperature; pH; moisture content; and NH₄⁺-N content) and maturity index (C/N ratio, E₄/E₆ and GI). Therefore, DOM evolution could quickly reflect the maturity process of compost. In subsequent research, the quantitative analysis of DOM components can be considered to modify DOM spectral parameters, or to build a model, so as to achieve rapid evaluation of compost maturity.

Arsenic release from arsenopyrite weathering in acid mine drainage: Kinetics, transformation, and effect of biochar

Arsenopyrite (FeAsS) oxidative dissolution provides an important source for the occurrence of high arsenic in acid mine drainage (AMD). Biochar is a potent material that can dramatically sequestrate an array of heavy metals in water. However, little is known about the role of biochar on the fate of As from arsenopyrite in AMD. This study investigates the effects of biochar concentrations, AMD acidities, and temperatures on the release of As from arsenopyrite in a simulated AMD over a range of environmentally relevant conditions. Results show that biochar inhibits As release and further acidification without changing the arsenopyrite weathering mechanism. Arsenopyrite is first oxidized to Fe(II), As(III) and S⁰ and ultimately oxidized to Fe(III), As(V) and SO₄^2-, respectively. Higher concentration, temperature or higher acidity promotes the arsenic release rate. Electrochemical studies showed that biochar inhibited As release and acidification for reduced the charge transfer resistance at the double layer and film resistance at the passivation layer, which was mainly attributed to Fe(III) ions in AMD being adsorbed, oxidized, and As complexed to biochar-Fe-As(V). This study reveals the release mechanism of As from arsenopyrite weathering in AMD and suggests the applicability of biochar in mitigating arsenic pollution and further acidification in sulfide mineral mine drainage.

Micro-aerobic conditions based on membrane-covered improves the quality of compost products: Insights into fungal community evolution and dissolved organic matter characteristics

This study investigated the effects of micro-aerobic conditions on fungal community succession and dissolved organic matter transformation during dairy manure membrane-covered composting. The results showed that lignocellulose degradation in the micro-aerobic composting group (AC: oxygen concentration < 5 %) was slower than that in the static composting group (SC: oxygen concentration < 1 %), but the dissolved organic carbon in AC was greatly increased. The degree of aromatic polymerization was higher in AC than in SC. But the carboxyl carbon and alcohol/ether biodegradations were faster in SC than in AC, which promoted carbon dioxide and methane emissions, respectively. The relative abundances of pathogenic and dung saprotrophic fungi in AC were 44.6 % and 10.59 % lower than those in SC on day 30, respectively. Moreover, the relative abundance of soil saprotrophs increased by 5.18 % after micro-aerobic composting. Therefore, micro-aerobic conditions improved the quality of compost products by influencing fungal community evolution and dissolved organic matter transformation.

Effect of ventilation quantity on electron transfer capacity and spectral characteristics of humic substances during sludge composting

Humic substances (HSs) can ameliorate soil pollution by mediating electron transfer between microorganisms and contaminants. This capability depends on the redox-active functional structure and electron transfer capacity (ETC) of HS. This study mainly aimed to analyze the effects of different ventilation quantities on the ETC and spectral characteristics of HS (including humic acids (HAs) and fulvic acids (FAs)) during sludge composting. HS was extracted from compost with different ventilation quantities (0.1, 0.2, and 0.3 L kg^-1 dry matter min^-1, denoted as VQ1, VQ2, and VQ3, respectively). The ETC of HS was measured by electrochemical method. Excitation-emission matrix (EEM) spectroscopy, ultraviolet and visible (UV-Vis) spectrophotometry, and Fourier transform infrared (FT-IR) spectroscopy were conducted to understand the evolution of HS composition during composting. Results indicated that the ETC of HA and FA increased during composting, and VQ2 had stronger ETC and electron recycling rate than VQ1 and VQ3 at the end of composting. UV-Vis analysis revealed that the humification degree, aromatization degree, and molecular weight of HA and FA increased during composting, while the content of lignin decreased. EEM-PARAFAC results suggested that VQ2 accelerated the degradation of protein-like substances. FT-IR revealed a decrease trend in polysaccharide and aliphatic, and the carboxyl content increased in VQ2 and VQ3 while decreased in VQ1. Correlation analysis was used to study the relationship between HS components and ETC. The results advance our further understanding of the pollution remediation mechanism of HS.

Feasibility assessment of bioethanol production from humic acid-assisted alkaline pretreated Kentucky bluegrass (Poa pratensis L.) followed by downstream enrichment using direct contact membrane distillation

The effective fractionation of structural components of abundantly available lignocellulosic biomass is essential to unlock its full biorefinery potential. In this study, the feasibility of humic acid on the pretreatment of Kentucky bluegrass biomass in alkaline condition was assessed to separate 70.1% lignin and hydrolyzable biocomponents. The humic acid-assisted delignification followed by enzymatic saccharification yielded 0.55 g/g of reducing sugars from 7.5% (w/v) pretreated biomass loading and 16 FPU/g of cellulase. Yeast fermentation of the biomass hydrolysate produced 76.6% (w/w) ethanol, which was subsequently separated and concentrated using direct contact membrane distillation. The hydrophobic microporous flat-sheet membrane housed in a rectangular-shaped crossflow module and counter-current mode of flow of the feed (hot) and distillate (cold) streams yielded a flux of 11.6 kg EtOH/m²/24 h. A modular, compact, flexible, and eco-friendly membrane-integrated hybrid approach is used for the first time to effectively valorize Kentucky bluegrass biomass for sustainable production of biofuel.

Enhanced removal of humic substances in effluent organic matter from a leachate treatment system via biological upgradation of molecular structure

Biological upgradation (BU) process was proposed, with the goal of converting the molecular structure, for improving the coagulation effect on humic substances (HS) in effluent organic matter from the membrane bioreactor of a leachate treatment system. Enhancement of coagulation effect was observed with the improvement of chemical oxygen demand and HS removal efficiency from 45.5% and 56.5% to 80.0% and 92.6% (Fe dosage was 400 mg·L^-1), respectively, which was approximately 30-40% higher than the other available researches. Variations in molecular weight (MW) and carboxyl contents of fulvic acid (FA) and humic acid (HA) were analysed by size exclusion chromatography coupled with dissolved organic carbon detection, potentiometric titration and Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy. The obtained results indicated that BU process led to the growth of MW of HS, of which the larger MW (1650 Da) FA and HA raised from 19.07 and 0.34 mgC·L^-1 to 71.67 and 1.58 mgC·L^-1, respectively, as well as increases in the carboxyl contents of FA and HA from 6.70 and 6.28 meq·gC^-1 to 11.84 and 8.71 meq·gC^-1, respectively. Because of this, a stronger binding effect between Fe and HS might be formed that improved the coagulation effect.

Analysis of Pyrolysis Characteristics of Oily Sludge in Different Regions and Environmental Risk Assessment of Heavy Metals in Pyrolysis Residue

As a resource treatment method, pyrolysis realizes the recovery of oil and immobilization of heavy metals in oily sludge (OS). The results showed that the composition of OS had little effect on the trend of the whole pyrolysis process, but it had different effects on the mass loss and maximum weight loss rate at each pyrolysis stage. SEM-EDS results showed that the pyrolysis residue had a porous internal structure, which was similar to that of activated carbon. The elements S, Ca, O, Fe, Al, and Si were embedded in the carbon skeleton. After OS pyrolysis, the oil content of the solid residue was far less than 2%, which met the pollution control requirements for comprehensive utilization specified in China's oil and gas industry standard. At the same time, the ratio of exchangeable fraction decreased and the ratio of residual fraction increased after OS pyrolysis. The potential ecological hazard coefficient (E _r) of Cd in OS2, OS2-500, and OS2-600 was greater than 40, which were strong and medium hazards. The E _r values of OS2-700 and other metals were far lower than 40, which were low hazards. With the increase of pyrolysis temperature, the comprehensive ecological hazard index (RI) of heavy metals in the residue gradually decreased and the RI value of OS2-700 decreased to 28.01. Therefore, the pyrolysis residue had an internal porous structure and controllable environmental risk. It could be used as an adsorption material for heavy metals to realize the comprehensive utilization of OS.

Evaluating sewage sludge contribution during co-composting using cause-evidence-impact analysis based on morphological characterization

The pertinent challenges associated with effective treatment of fecal sludge in medium scales necessitate alternative means for land application. The methods of compost preparation from sewage sludge and their modes of application to the agricultural fields have profound impacts on the soil ecology and environment. Besides the chemical conditioning effects on soil organic matter, they also impart physical attributes to the soil texture and structure. Though it is expected that compost addition improves water holding capacity and nutrient sequestration, there is lack of clarity in correlating the field outcomes with conditions of excess nutrient storage/leaching despite the agronomic benefits. In this study, we present a systematic cause-evidence-impact relationship on the feedstock composition, processing, and applications of co-composted sewage sludge. Various analytical tools were compared to elucidate the unique characteristics of co-composted sewage sludge to get a realistic understanding of the complex soil-compost interactions. Results from the spectroscopic characterization reveal the implications of selection of bulking agents and sludge pre-treatment in determining the final quality of the compost. Based on the results, we postulate a unique attribution of parent material influence to the formation of well-defined porous structures which influences the nutrient leaching/sequestrating behavior of the soil. Thus, the compounded impacts of composted organic matter on the soil and crop can be proactively determined in terms of elemental composition, functional groups, and stability indices. The present approach provides good scope for customizing the preparations and applications of aerobic microbial composts in order to derive the preferred field outputs.

Agroindustrial wastes as a substrate for the cultivation of Eruca sativa Miller seedlings: physical-chemical and phytometric parameters assessment

Evaluation was made of the use of organic substrates obtained from the composting of poultry industry wastes, together with crude glycerin, for the production of arugula seedlings (Eruca sativa Miller). The raw materials included hatchery waste, chicken litter, and flotation tank sludge, in combination with other materials such as tree pruning, sugarcane bagasse, crude glycerin (at 0, 1.5, 3.0, 4.5, and 6.0%), and boiler charcoal. Analysis of the organic substrates included determination of nitrogen, phosphorus, and potassium (NPK), pH, electrical conductivity, functional groups, and carboxylic acids. Physical parameters determined were water retention capacity, solids volume, porosity, density, and granulometry. For the arugula seedlings, determinations were made of the ease of removal of the root ball from the tray, the effect of free drop on the root ball, phytometric parameters, and total phenolic compounds. Decreased concentrations of carboxylic acids, together with the presence of aromatic functional groups, indicated maturation/stabilization of the organic substrates. The phytometric measurements indicated that the use of the organic substrates with addition of 3.0, 4.5, and 6.0% of crude glycerin favored arugula production and led to higher contents of total phenolic compounds in the seedlings, with values of 3657.54, 3602.13, and 3232.92 mg GAE g^-1, respectively. The results demonstrated that the use of these organic substrates with the addition of crude glycerin provided satisfactory development of arugula seedlings.

Effects of thermophiles inoculation on the efficiency and maturity of rice straw composting

The present study investigated the effects of separately or simultaneously inoculating thermophilic fungus Aspergillus fumigatus Z5 and bacterium Geobacillus stearothermophilus B5 on lignocellulose degradation, enzyme activities and humification during rice straw composting. The results indicated that inoculation of Z5 accelerated the rise of temperature in the mesophilic phase, and the degradation degree of cellulose and hemicellulose was increased by 25.3% and 20.7%, respectively, due to the higher activities of lignocellulolytic enzymes. Inoculation of B5 increased 5-7 °C of the compost temperature in the thermophilic phase, and also prolonged the duration from 33 to 41 days. Inoculated simultaneously, the secreted hydrolases of Z5 generated more nutrition and promoted the growth of B5. B5 maintained and increased the compost temperature, thus presenting a better hydrolysis environment for extracellular hydrolases. Thermophilic inoculation altered the main physicochemical factors and improved efficiency and maturity in rice straw composting.

Humic acid characterization and heavy metal behaviour during vermicomposting of pig manure amended with 13C-labelled rice straw

Aiming to reveal the humification process of organic waste and its contribution to the heavy metal behaviour affected by earthworm activity, it was studied about the variation of humic acid (HA) and heavy metal behaviour during vermicomposting of the mixed pig manure and ¹³C-labelled rice straw. The results showed that earthworms could well adapt to the culturing environment and feed organic matter for its growth and reproduction, the vermicomposting process increased the content of humic substances (HS), HA, and fulvic acid (FA) in substrate residues, but led to less transformation of HA into FA. The elemental, ultraviolet absorption spectroscopy, Fourier transform infrared (FTIR) and fluorescence excitation-emission matrix (EEM) analysis indicated that vermicomposting led to more aromatic structures and much higher humification degree in HA, whereas less protein, FA-like substances and plastein in HA. Vermicomposting could enhance the total Cu content and decrease Cu/Zn bioavailability in the substrate residues, and vermicomposting especially can help stabilize Cu in the substrate residues by forming more complexed HA-Cu.

Effect of humic acid on phenanthrene removal by constructed wetlands using birnessite as a substrate

The binding of polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs) to humic acid (HA) can boost the complexation–flocculation process and promote pollutant oxidation through the role of HA as an electron shuttle. HA-coated biochar (BA) was added to study the effects of HA on phenanthrene (PHE) removal by constructed wetlands (CWs) using birnessite as a substrate. HA reduced the average PHE concentration of effluent by 26.58% due to its role as a complexing agent, based on Fourier-transform infrared spectroscopy analysis. For CWs with birnessite, the PHE removal performance was further enhanced due to the role of electron shuttles. X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy and illumina high-throughput analysis revealed an enhanced Mn–Fe cycle. The total relative proportions of Mn-oxidizing bacteria and iron-oxidizing bacteria in VFBCW-HA/BA were 2.33 and 5.50 times as high as those in VFBCW-BA and VFCW-HA/BA. Humic acid also accelerated the biodegradation of PAHs and the quantity of PAH degradative bacteria in VFBCW-HA/BA was 6.29 times greater than in VFBCW-BA.

An enhanced birnessite constructed wetland for phenanthrene removal is proposed based on HA coated biochar and the strengthening mechanism is reported.

Slow Release and Water Retention Performance of Poly(Acrylic Acid-Co-Acrylamide)/Fulvic Acid/Oil Shale Semicoke Superabsorbent Composites

In order to achieve the low cost and multifunction of superabsorbent composites, poly(acrylic acid-co-acrylamide)/fulvic acid/oil shale semicoke (PAMFS) were prepared by free radical copolymerization of fulvic acid (FA), oil shale semicoke (OSSC), acrylic acid (AA) and acrylamide (AM). The characterization results revealed that FA and OSSC were involved in the construction of a three-dimensional (3D) polymeric network via hydrogen bonding and covalent bonding. The water absorbency of PAMFS in distilled water and 0.9 wt% NaCl solution were 724 and 98 g/g, respectively. The FA slow release of PAMFS in distilled water and soil was achieved due to the interaction between FA and the functional groups of polymer matrix by hydrogen bonds and covalent bonds. Furthermore, the potted experiment indicated that the addition of PAMFS to soil can significantly promote plant growth compared with the pure soil, regardless of water stress. Therefore, this superabsorbent composite showed an excellent water absorption and salt resistance performance, as well as nice slow release performance. It has a broad application prospect.

Liquid fertilizer production from organic waste by conventional and microwave-assisted extraction technologies: Techno-economic and environmental assessment

The use of mineral fertilizers in agriculture has significantly increased to support the growing global food demand. Organic fertilizers are produced from renewable waste materials to overcome the drawbacks of inorganic fertilizers. The development of novel production processes of organic fertilizers entails a significant advance towards the circular economy that reincorporates waste materials into the production cycle. In this work, the economic and environmental feasibility of an industrial plant with a treatment capacity of 300 kg/h of organic waste for the production of liquid fertilizers has been performed. Two extraction technologies (conventional and microwave) and two solvents (water and alkaline) have been compared to select the most sustainable and profitable scenario for scaling-up. The extraction process consists of 2 steps: extraction followed by a concentration stage (necessary only if water extraction is applied). The resolution of the mass balances shows that the fertilizer production under alkaline conditions is ten times higher than for water-based extraction. The economic analysis demonstrated that the total investment cost of microwave technology (>3.5 M€) is three times higher compared to the conventional extraction technology (<1.5 M€), mainly due to the higher complexity of the equipment. These facts directly impact the minimum selling price, because the fertilizers obtained by conventional extraction with alkaline solvent would have a lower selling price (about 1 €/L). As for environmental assessment, the indicators show that the environmental impact produced by water-based extraction is higher than alkaline-solvent extraction, mainly due to the necessity of a concentration stage of the liquid extract to meet the requirements of European regulations. In view of the results obtained in the economic and environmental evaluation, it could be concluded that the most favourable scenario for scaling up the production of liquid fertilizers from organic waste is the conventional extraction under alkaline conditions.

Extracellular laccase-activated humification of phenolic pollutants and its application in plant growth

Humification processes of phenolic pollutants may play a profound role in environment purification and plant growth. However, little literature is performed to explore exoenzyme-driven humification to polymerize 17β-estradiol (E2) and humic constituents (HCs), and the effects of their polymeric precipitates on plant growth are usually overlooked. Herein, E2 conversion and radish (Raphanus sativus L.) growth were systematically investigated under humification mediated by extracellular laccase (EL) of Trametes versicolor. Results disclosed that EL-assisted humification achieved a wonderful E2 conversion efficiency (>99%) within 2-h, but the presence of HCs such as humic acid (HA), vanillic acid (VA), and ferulic acid (FA) impeded E2 elimination significantly. Compared with HC-free, the kinetics constants declined by 2.84-, 5.72-, and 5.22-fold with HA, VA, and FA present, respectively. Intriguingly, three close-knit self/cross-linked precipitates (i.e., E2-HA, E2-VA, and E2-FA hybrid precipitates) in dark gray, dark brown, and deep yellow were created after a continuous humification by phenolic radical-initiated polymerization mechanisms. The formation of these humified precipitates was extremely effective on circumventing phytotoxicity caused by monomeric E2, VA, or FA. Furthermore, they acted as humic-like organic fertilizers, accelerating seed germination, root elongation, and enhancing NaCl-tolerance of radish through the combination of oxygen-contained functional components and auxin structural analogues with unstable and stubborn carbon skeletons. This is the first study reporting the pollution purification and plant growth promotion in EL-activated humification. Our findings frame valuable perspectives regarding the natural detoxification and carbon sequestration of phenolic pollutants and the application of their polymeric precipitates in global crop production.

Probing changes in humus chemical characteristics in response to biochar addition and varying bulking agents during composting: A holistic multi-evidence-based approach

Despite the various benefits of humus, the changes in its chemical characteristics during composting in response to biochar addition and varying bulking agents remain to be further explored. In this study, three treatments were conducted, in which swine manure, bulking agent, and biochar were mixed at ratios of 4:1:0, 8:1:0, and 8:1:1. Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR), carbon nuclear magnetic resonance spectroscopy (¹³C-NMR), three-dimensional excitation-emission matrix fluorescence spectroscopy (3D-EEM), and near-edge X-ray absorption fine structure (NEXAFS) were employed to characterize the chemical and structural properties of humus from multiple perspectives. The 3D-EEM spectra in this study showed a larger increase in humic acids (HAs) content (56%) and HAs to fulvic acids ratio (128%) during composting, indicating stronger humification in biochar-amended treatment. FTIR, ¹³C-NMR, and NEXAFS all confirmed the essential properties of HA as the core agronomic functional substance with rich aromatic and carboxyl groups, and that its aromaticity increased gradually during composting. In addition, ¹³C-NMR demonstrated that biochar addition and a relatively higher bulking agent ratio aided an increase in the carboxyl C proportion in HA after composting. In particular, NEXAFS revealed that biochar addition promoted the diversification of C, N, and O species in HA, with the emergence of quinone C and O-alkyl C as the main representatives. This work suggests that biochar addition and a relatively high bulking agent ratio could enhance humification and improve the agronomic function of humus.

Factors that affect physicochemical and acid-base properties of compost and vermicompost and its potential use as a soil amendment

Composting and vermicomposting have attracted attention in relation to both waste management and the potential to produce organic amendments that could improve soil quality. The main differences between compost depend on the feedstock, the production process, and the degree of maturity. In the present study, samples of compost of different origin (food and green waste, livestock waste, algae waste, urban waste or sewage sludge) or subjected to different composting methods (traditional or using earthworms) were collected for analysis. Additionally, samples collected at various stages of the composting process were compared (raw material, 15 and 30 days of composting, and final compost). Different analysis and techniques were used to establish the chemical composition, physicochemical and acid-base properties of compost samples and the organic matter extracts. The correlations obtained (between the abundance of acid groups in different extracts of the compost or between the cation exchange capacity and the C/N atomic ratio) would allow for predicting the compost behaviour based on certain characteristics, and a reduction in the number of parameters determined experimentally, thus facilitating comparisons between different compost. In addition, the potential value of the compost as amendment was tested with a Haplic Cambisol from a mining area. The application of compost increased the pH, the organic matter and nutrient content, and promoted seed germination and root growth.

Se changed the component of organic chemicals and Cr bioavailability in pak choi rhizosphere soil

Rhizosphere organic chemicals response and its role on Cr/Se adsorption are of great importance to understand Cr/Se bioavailability in Cr-contaminated soil with the application of Se. In the current work, the processes were carried out using rhizobox experiment (Brassica campestris L. ssp. chinensis Makino). The results showed that in soil contaminated by 200 mg kg-1 Cr(III), Se(IV) complexed with Cr(III) and carboxylic acid (cis-9,10-Epoxystearic acid, hexadecanedioic acid) reduced Cr(VI) to Cr(III), thus increasing of Cr adsorption, furtherly decreasing Cr bioavailability. While in soil contaminated by 120 mg kg-1 Cr(VI), Se(VI) competed for adsorption sites with Cr(VI) and salicylic acid activated insoluble Cr(III), thus decreasing Cr adsorption, finally increasing Cr bioavailability. Moreover, with Cr contamination, Se bioavailability in soil was enhanced by the secretion of carboxylic acid, which can reduce Se to lower valent state and compete the adsorption sites and complex with Se oxyanion. These results yielded a better understanding of rhizosphere dynamics regulating by Se application in Cr-contaminated soil. Moreover, the current study supplemented the theoretical basis for beneficial elements application as an environment-friendly resource to facilitate cleaner production in heavy metal contaminated soil.

A case study on establishing the state of decomposition of municipal solid waste in a bioreactor landfill in India

Estimation of temporal changes undergone by municipal solid waste (MSW) in its physico-chemico-geomechanical properties in a bioreactor landfill (BLF) is essential for: (i) efficient landfilling, (ii) establishing the state of decomposition of MSW with time and (iii) deciding upon the appropriate time to initiate landfill mining. To achieve this, a series of destructive (DTs) and non-destructive tests (NDTs) can be conducted on the MSW samples in the BLF. With this in view, several DTs were conducted on these samples retrieved from different depths of the two cells of a fully operational BLF in Mumbai, India. Subsequently, the physical and chemical properties of these samples such as composition, moisture content, volatile solids (VS), elemental content, lignocellulosic content (i.e. cellulose, hemicellulose and lignin content) and bio-methanation potential, were determined by following the laboratory testing, as a function of time. Also, NDTs such as cone penetration test and multichannel analysis of surface waves were conducted on these cells of BLF to obtain geomechanical parameters (viz. cone resistance, sleeve resistance, friction ratio and shear wave velocity) of the MSW. Based on the data obtained from these tests, and reported in the literature, it has been observed that the VS, elemental content, lignocellulosic content and bio-methanation potential of MSW exhibits very well-defined trends, as compared to the geomechanical parameters, with time. Furthermore, it has been observed that the VS, hydrogen-, carbon- and nitrogen-content reduce significantly (≈62%, 70%, 50% and 30%, respectively), following an exponential decay, until the critical time (t_cr) (≈4 years) has been achieved. As, beyond t_cr these parameters remain practically unchanged, which corresponds to the 'stabilized MSW', mining of the BLF can be initiated without further delay.

Relative proportions of organic carbon functional groups in biochars as influenced by spectral data collection and processing

Solid-state ¹³C Nuclear Magnetic Resonance (NMR) and synchrotron-based X-ray Absorption Near-Edge Structure (XANES) have applications for determining the relative proportions of organic C functional groups in materials. Spectral data obtained by NMR is typically processed using integration (INTEG) whereas XANES spectral data is typically processed using deconvolution (DECONV). The objective of this study was to examine the impact of spectral data collection and processing on the estimated relative proportions of organic C functional groups in biochars. Biochars showed large variations in aromatic C (45-97%), alkyl C (0-23%), O-alkyl C (1-41%), phenolic C (0-20%) and carboxylic C (0-20%). NMR had a better ability than XANES to differentiate % aromatic C across biochars, and the mean % aromatic C was always greater for NMR-INTEG and NMR-DECONV than for XANES-INTEG or XANES-DECONV. NMR-INTEG showed significant associations with NMR-DECONV and XANES-INTEG for % aromatic C and alkyl C, but there were no significant associations between NMR and XANES for % O-alkyl C, phenolic C and carboxylic C. As well, there was no association between NMR-INTEG and XANES-DECONV for any organic C functional group, and in some cases, spectral data collection and processing influenced the quantification of organic C functional groups in a given biochar to the extent that the differences observed were as large as differences observed between biochars when analyzed using the same spectral data collection and processing technique. We conclude that great caution must be taken when comparing studies that determined organic C functional groups in materials using NMR-INTEG versus XANES-DECONV.

Microwave-assisted pyrolysis of oily sludge from offshore oilfield for recovery of high-quality products

Microwave pyrolysis of oily sludge (OS) was investigated in this study. In this case, the highest oil yield (85.93 wt%) was achieved at 500 °C. The molar ratio of H/C was lower for OS char (OC) at higher pyrolysis temperatures, indicating good stability of OC owing to high degree of carbonization and aromaticity. Then, iodine adsorption value of OC reached maximum (531.2 mg/g) at 750 °C. While methylene blue (MB) uptake slightly increased with temperature and reached maximum (384.08 mg/g) at 850 °C. In order to improve the quality of pyrolysis products, different catalysts were employed in OS pyrolysis. The maximum content (64.31%) of aromatic hydrocarbon was found in PO500-10β. In addition, β-zeolite also reduced oxygenates content in oil, beneficial for stability of oil products. The gas products from catalytic pyrolysis were abundant in CO and CH₄, and KOH achieved the highest CO (5.9 wt%), CH₄ (16.9 wt%) and H₂ (2.4 wt%) yields. Finally, a reaction mechanism pathway for OS pyrolysis was proposed to show the production routes of gas, liquid, and solid products.

Enhanced complexation of humic acids: Homogenization of protonated groups in the hybrid ozonation-coagulation process

In this study, we compared dissolved organic carbon (DOC) and UV₂₅₄ removal efficiencies of the hybrid ozonation-coagulation (HOC) and pre-ozonation-coagulation (POC) processes for humic acid (HA) at pH 5 with AlCl₃•6H₂O as the coagulant. The DOC and UV₂₅₄ removal efficiencies of the HOC process were higher than those of the POC process at ozone dosages less than 2.0 mg O₃ (mg DOC)^-1. The ozone dosage was optimized at 0.3 and 0.1 mg O₃ (mg DOC)^-1 for the HOC and POC processes, respectively, implying a more rigorous ozone dosage for the POC process. During the POC process, pre-ozonation was observed to increase the binding sites of HA (e.g., hydroxyl and carboxyl groups), improving the complexation of dissolved organic matter. For the HOC process, in addition to its role in the oxidation of organic matter, ozone also reacted with coagulants. The reaction between ozone and coagulants can facilitate the formation of Al₁₃. Moreover, the oxidation of •OH and ozone can increase the charge density of the HA binding sites, homogenizing the binding sites of HA and enhancing the complexation with Al₁₃.

Evaluation of commercial composts and potting mixes and their ability to support arbuscular mycorrhizal fungi with maize (Zea mays) as host plant

The use of composts and potting mixes in food production systems is a promising way to counteract the effects of soil degradation and allows crop growth in soilless culture systems. Arbuscular mycorrhizal fungi (AMF) are a well-studied group of beneficial plant symbionts that have been shown to provide important ecosystem services. This study analysed the properties of nine commercial Australian potting mixes and composts and investigated whether they support colonization of maize plants with AMF in a plant growth bioassay. Physicochemical analyses showed highly variable properties between the substrates, with some extreme values that limited plant growth. DNA-based analysis revealed the presence of various plant pathogens, which was linked to inhibited plant growth in one substrate. Some substrates did not meet national quality standards, due to the concentrations of plant nutrients, heavy metals, or substrate maturity. Plant growth was mostly limited due to nitrogen immobilization, which required weekly fertilizer applications. Solid state ¹³C nuclear magnetic resonance spectroscopy gave insight into the decomposition state of the substrates. Plant roots in most substrates were well colonized with AMF (>60% root length), regardless of most substrate properties. Root colonization was negatively affected in only one substrate, likely due to ammonium toxicity. Results of this study show that not all commercial substrates adhered to national quality standards. Potting mixes and composts can support high mycorrhizal root colonization when plant growth is otherwise not limited.

NMR spectroscopy of wastewater: A review, case study, and future potential

NMR spectroscopy is arguably the most powerful tool for the study of molecular structures and interactions, and is increasingly being applied to environmental research, such as the study of wastewater. With over 97% of the planet's water being saltwater, and two thirds of freshwater being frozen in the ice caps and glaciers, there is a significant need to maintain and reuse the remaining 1%, which is a precious resource, critical to the sustainability of most life on Earth. Sanitation and reutilization of wastewater is an important method of water conservation, especially in arid regions, making the understanding of wastewater itself, and of its treatment processes, a highly relevant area of environmental research. Here, the benefits, challenges and subtleties of using NMR spectroscopy for the analysis of wastewater are considered. First, the techniques available to overcome the specific challenges arising from the nature of wastewater (which is a complex and dilute matrix), including an examination of sample preparation and NMR techniques (such as solvent suppression), in both the solid and solution states, are discussed. Then, the arsenal of available NMR techniques for both structure elucidation (e.g., heteronuclear, multidimensional NMR, homonuclear scalar coupling-based experiments) and the study of intermolecular interactions (e.g., diffusion, nuclear Overhauser and saturation transfer-based techniques) in wastewater are examined. Examples of wastewater NMR studies from the literature are reviewed and potential areas for future research are identified. Organized by nucleus, this review includes the common heteronuclei (¹³C, ¹⁵N, ¹⁹F, ³¹P, ²⁹Si) as well as other environmentally relevant nuclei and metals such as ²⁷Al, ⁵¹V, ²⁰⁷Pb and ¹¹³Cd, among others. Further, the potential of additional NMR methods such as comprehensive multiphase NMR, NMR microscopy and hyphenated techniques (for example, LC-SPE-NMR-MS) for advancing the current understanding of wastewater are discussed. In addition, a case study that combines natural abundance (i.e. non-concentrated), targeted and non-targeted NMR to characterize wastewater, along with in vivo based NMR to understand its toxicity, is included. The study demonstrates that, when applied comprehensively, NMR can provide unique insights into not just the structure, but also potential impacts, of wastewater and wastewater treatment processes. Finally, low-field NMR, which holds considerable future potential for on-site wastewater monitoring, is briefly discussed. In summary, NMR spectroscopy is one of the most versatile tools in modern science, with abilities to study all phases (gases, liquids, gels and solids), chemical structures, interactions, interfaces, toxicity and much more. The authors hope this review will inspire more scientists to embrace NMR, given its huge potential for both wastewater analysis in particular and environmental research in general.

Experimental and theoretical studies into the hydroxyl radical mediated transformation of propylparaben to methylparaben in the presence of dissolved organic matter surrogate

Dissolved humic and biogenic substances might be present in the aphotic zone and contribute to the fate of parabens in natural aquatic ecosystem under the fluctuation of water multi-parameters. Through the combination of batch tests with quantum chemical calculation, hydroxyl radical (•OH) mediated degradation of propylparaben (PP) to methylparaben (MP) has been confirmed in the present study. The interaction of dissolved oxygen with environmental relevant concentration of humic acid (HA), algal and bacterial cell lysis leads to a slow production of •OH. Aqueous PP undergoes a mild removal process with the pseudo-first order rate constant (10^-7, s^-1) higher at 7.43 in HA than at 3.30-4.89 in biogenic cell lysis. PP removal is correlated with the aromaticity of DOM surrogate and the produced •OH concentration, which could be enhanced by the increase of light intensity and DO other than HA. The •OH mediated process on PP removal has been confirmed by the linearly inhibited effect of tert-butanol while totally inhibited effects of higher concentration of sodium azide and co-existent chemical (17β-estradiol). Based on the detection of byproduct MP, two possible reaction pathways, •OH attacking at β-carbon (path-β) and terminal γ-carbon (path-γ) of the propyl side chain of PP, are proposed. Through the analysis of thermal and kinetics parameters, the •OH initiated H-abstraction and the resulting C-C bond cleavage leading to the formation of MP and acetaldehyde in path-β is confirmed to be the dominant reaction mechanism. Considering the universal occurrence of parabens and these DOM surrogates, this mild removal process has special implications for the self-purification of organic pollutants in natural aquatic ecosystems, especially in DOM-rich matrices in the aphotic zone.

Microwave pyrolysis of oily sludge under different control modes

The effects of temperature and power on product distribution and characteristics of oily sludge (OS) pyrolysis were investigated in a microwave reactor. The maximum oil yield was 72.55 wt% at 550 °C and 71.47 wt% at 800 W, respectively. X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS) indicated that C-C and C-O were the main forms of carbon in OS char (OC). The sulfur (S) content in OC increased as the temperature/power rose, implying that S might exist in the form of inorganics or OC had S retention ability. In temperature control mode, the changes of functional groups on OC surface were more sensitive. The maximum hydrocarbon content in oil was 14.56% at 350 °C and 13.40% at 900 W, respectively. The contents of oxygenated compounds and heterocycles in oil from temperature control mode were higher. The CO yield increased with increasing temperature/power, reaching the maximum of 9.60 wt% at 650 °C and 7.75 wt% at 900 W, respectively. Compared with power control mode, it seemed that more heavy metals (HMs) were retained in OC in temperature control mode. The E_r of HMs were at the clean level and RI indicated the HMs in OC had a low environmental risk.

Underestimated humic acids release and influence on anaerobic digestion during sludge thermal hydrolysis

Humic-like acids (HAs) are abundant in sewage sludge but mainly bonded with solids. Thus, their influences are often neglected in conventional digestion processes. Currently thermal hydrolysis pretreatment (THP) has been widely adopted in sludge anaerobic digestion (AD) to enhance hydrolysis of complex matters and further to improve methane production. However, the impacts of enhanced release of HAs and the mechanisms involved are not well understood and need to be further investigated because the substantial amounts of HAs present in AD could severely threaten the sludge AD processes. Results in the present study indicated that the concentration of soluble HAs in sludge was elevated by 90 times due to the THP, from 8 mg/L in raw sludge to 727 mg/L in the pretreated sludge hydrolyzed at 180 °C. Moreover, the structural characteristics of soluble HAs, including aromatic condensation degree, elemental composition and functional group, also showed substantial differences with the increased temperature of the THP. Furthermore, the release of HAs presented significant influences on sludge digestion. Acidification rate was inhibited by over 50% with 0.4 g/L of HAs, whereas methanogenesis was improved by nearly 200% with 0.8 g/L HAs and inhibited about 50% with 2.0 g/L. The activities of proteinase and co-enzyme F₄₂₀ were decreased by 20% and increased by 19%, respectively, under HAs stress at 0.6 g/L for 5 days. Moreover, molecular structural changes of soluble HAs also contributed to the influences. Especially, the E4/E6 value representing the degree of HAs aromatic condensation and C/N ratio of soluble HAs were closely correlated with their inhibition degree to sludge hydrolysis. The findings of this study demonstrate that the influences of HAs are evident and also vary to the different steps of anaerobic digestion processes, which shall not be negligible during the sludge digestion that is with THP. Due to the rate-limiting step was methanogenesis in the AD process of pretreated sludge by thermal hydrolysis, HAs concentration was recommended at low level, for example around 1.0 g/L, to accelerate or not limit methanogenesis.
