Green-synthesized nanocatalysts and nanomaterials for water treatment: Current challenges and future perspectives

Recent advances and challenges of the green ZnO-based composites biosynthesized using plant extracts for water treatment

Recently, there has been a notable rise in the prevalence of persistent pollutants in the environment, posing a significant hazard due to their toxicity and enduring nature. Conventional wastewater treatment methods employed in treatment plants rarely address these persistent pollutants adequately. Meanwhile, the concept of green synthesis has garnered considerable attention, owing to its environmentally friendly approach that utilizes fewer toxic chemicals and solvents. The utilization of materials derived from sustainable sources presents a promising avenue for solving pressing environmental concerns. Among the various sources of biological agents, plants stand out for their accessibility, eco-friendliness, and rich reserves of phytochemicals suitable for material synthesis. The plant extract-mediated synthesis of zinc oxide nanoparticles (ZnONPs) has emerged as a promising solution for applications in wastewater treatment. Thorough investigations into the factors influencing the properties of these green ZnONPs are essential to establish a detailed and reliable synthesis process. Major weaknesses inherent in ZnONPs can be addressed by changing the optical, magnetic, and interface properties through doping with various semiconductor materials. Consequently, research efforts to mitigate water pollution are being driven by both the future prospects and limitations of ZnO-based composites. This review underscores the recent advancements of plant extract-mediated ZnONP composites for water treatment.

Combined exposure to decabromodiphenyl ether and nano zero-valent iron aggravated oxidative stress and interfered with metabolism in earthworms

Decabromodiphenyl ether (BDE-209) is a common brominated flame retardant in electronic waste, and nano zero-valent iron (nZVI) is a new material in the field of environmental remediation. Little is known about how BDE-209 and nZVI combined exposure influences soil organisms. During the 28 days study, we determined the effects of single and combined exposures to BDE-209 and nZVI on the oxidative stress and metabolic response of earthworms (Eisenia fetida). On day 7, compared to CK, malondialdehyde (MDA) content increased in most combined exposure groups. To remove MDA and reactive oxygen species (ROS), superoxide dismutase (SOD), catalase (CAT), and peroxidase (POD) activities were induced in most combined exposure groups. On day 28, compared to CK, the activities of SOD and CAT were inhibited, while POD activity was significantly induced, indicating that POD plays an important role in scavenging ROS. Combined exposure to BDE-209 and nZVI significantly affected amino acid biosynthesis and metabolism, purine metabolism, and aminoacyl-tRNA biosynthesis pathways, interfered with energy metabolism, and aggravated oxidative stress in earthworms. These findings provide a basis for assessing the ecological impacts of using nZVI to remediate soils contaminated with BDE-209 from electronic waste.

Effect of TiO2/Fe2O3 nanopowder synthesis method on visible light photocatalytic degradation of reactive blue dye

Water pollution and scarcity of clean water are major issues of concern globally. In this study, titanium dioxide (TiO2) photocatalyst doped with ferric oxide (Fe2O3) was used to degrade reactive blue dye (171) using sunlight irradiation. Two approaches were employed to synthesize the photocatalyst: synthesis of ferric oxide and titanium precursor through ultrasonic-assisted sol-gel method and using iron (III) nitrate nonahydrate with commercial titanium dioxide. The photocatalysts were characterized using FTIR Spectroscopy, SEM, XRD analyses, and UVDRS to determine their chemical composition, morphology, crystallinity, and light absorption, respectively. The effect of contaminant concentration (1-3 ppm), solution pH and photocatalyst type on the degradation efficiency was studied. Doping enabled visible light absorption as confirmed by the UVDRS analysis. Solar photocatalytic degradation resulted in complete (100 % removal) of the dye within 2 h under solar irradiation for all concentrations of the dye studied. Furthermore, the photocatalysts exhibited superior performance in both neutral and acidic solutions compared to basic ones. After four cycles, the dye removal efficiency has decreased by less than 15 % for all the photocatalysts confirming the significant activity and high stability of the nanocomposite. The increased dye photodegradation efficacy of Fe2O3 doped TiO2 under sunlight irradiation is attributed to the narrowing of the photocatalyst's bandgap from 3.76 eV (in pure TiO2) to 2.83 eV. This narrowing of the bandgap enhances the absorption of visible light from sunlight, thus making this photocatalyst effective under sunlight and eliminating the use of electricity which is a requirement for ultraviolet photocatalysis.

The Effect of Composition on the Properties and Application of CuO-NiO Nanocomposites Synthesized Using a Saponin-Green/Microwave-Assisted Hydrothermal Method

In this study, we explored the formation of CuO nanoparticles, NiO nanoflakes, and CuO-NiO nanocomposites using saponin extract and a microwave-assisted hydrothermal method. Five green synthetic samples were prepared using aqueous saponin extract and a microwave-assisted hydrothermal procedure at 200 °C for 30 min. The samples were pristine copper oxide (100C), 75% copper oxide-25% nickel oxide (75C25N), 50% copper oxide-50% nickel oxide (50C50N), 25% copper oxide-75% nickel oxide (25C75N), and pristine nickel oxide (100N). The samples were characterized using FT-IR, XRD, XPS, SEM, and TEM. The XRD results showed that copper oxide and nickel oxide formed monoclinic and cubic phases, respectively. The morphology of the samples was useful and consisted of copper oxide nanoparticles and nickel oxide nanoflakes. XPS confirmed the +2 oxidation state of both the copper and nickel ions. Moreover, the optical bandgaps of copper oxide and nickel oxide were determined to be in the range of 1.29-1.6 eV and 3.36-3.63 eV, respectively, and the magnetic property studies showed that the synthesized samples exhibited ferromagnetic and superparamagnetic properties. In addition, the catalytic activity was tested against para-nitrophenol, demonstrating that the catalyst efficiency gradually improved in the presence of CuO. The highest rate constants were obtained for the 100C and 75C25N samples, with catalytic efficiencies of 98.7% and 78.2%, respectively, after 45 min.

Nanoremediation and Antioxidant Potential of Biogenic Silver Nanoparticles Synthesized Using Leucena's Leaves, Stem, and Fruits

Synthetic dyes are persistent organic environmental pollutants that can cause extensive damage to living beings and to the ecosystem as a whole. Cost-effective, sustainable, and efficient strategies to deal with this type of pollution are necessary as it commonly resists conventional water treatment methods. Silver nanoparticles (AgNPs) synthesized using the aqueous extract from the leaves, stem, and fruits of Leucaena leucocephala (Leucena) were produced and characterized through UV-vis, TEM, EDS, SDL, XPS, XRD, and zeta potential, and they proved to be able to promote adsorption to remediate methylene blue and tartrazine pollution in water. The nanoremediation was performed and did not require direct exposure to sunlight or any special lamp or a specific reduction agent. The AgNPs produced using the extract from the leaves exhibited the best performance in nanoremediation and also presented antioxidant activity that surpassed the one from butylated hydroxytoluene (BHT). Consequently, it is an interesting nanotool to use in dye nanoremediation and/or as an antioxidant nanostructure.

Carbon-based adsorbents for the mitigation of polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbon: a review of recent research

Accumulation of polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAH) poses significant dangers to the environment and human health. The advancement of technology for cleaning up PAH-contaminated environments is receiving more attention. Adsorption is the preferred and most favorable approach for cleaning up sediments polluted with PAH. Due to their affordability and environmental friendliness, carbonaceous adsorbents (CAs) have been regarded as promising for adsorbing PAH. However, adsorbent qualities, environmental features, and factors may all significantly impact how well CAs remove PAH. According to growing data, CAs, most of which come from laboratory tests, may be utilized to decontaminate PAH in aquatic setups. However, their full potential has not yet been established, especially concerning field applications. This review aims to concisely summarize recent developments in CA, PAH stabilization processes, and essential field application-controlling variables. This review analysis emphasizes activated carbon, biochar, Graphene, carbon nanotubes, and carbon-nanomaterials composite since these CAs are most often utilized as adsorbents for PAH in aquatic systems.

A comprehensive review on antibacterial analysis of natural extract-based metal and metal oxide nanoparticles

Pharmaceutical, food packing, cosmetics, agriculture, energy storage devices widely utilize metal and metal oxide nanoparticles prepared via different physical and chemical methods. It resulted in the release of several dangerous compounds and solvents as the nanoparticles were being formed. Currently, Researchers interested in preparing nanoparticles (NPs) via biological approach due to their unique physiochemical properties which took part in reducing the environmental risks. However, a number of microbial species are causing dangerous illnesses and are a threat to the entire planet. The metal and metal oxide nanoparticles played a significant role in the identification and elimination of microbes when prepared using natural extract. Its biological performance is thus also becoming exponentially more apparent than it was using in conventional techniques. Despite the fact that they hurt germs, their small size and well-defined shape encourage surface contact with them. The generation of Reactive Oxygen Species (ROS), weakens the bacterial cell membrane by allowing internal cellular components to seep out. The bacterium dies as a result of this. Numerous studies on different nanoparticles and their antibacterial efficacy against various diseases are still accessible. The main objective of the biogenic research on the synthesis of key metals and metal oxides (such as gold, silver, titanium dioxide, nickel oxide, and zinc oxide) using various plant extracts is reviewed in this study along with the process of nanoparticle formation and the importance of phytochemicals found in the plant extract.

Tungsten-based Lindqvist and Keggin type polyoxometalates as efficient photocatalysts for degradation of toxic chemical dyes

Photocatalytic dye degradation employing polyoxometalates (POMs) has been a research focus for several years. We report the facile synthesis of tungsten-based Lindqvist and Keggin-type POMs that degrade toxic chemical dyes, methyl orange (MO) and methylene blue (MB), respectively. The Lindqvist POM, sodium hexatungstate, Na2W6O19, degrades MO under 100 W UV light irradiation within 15 min, whereas the Keggin POM, Ag4PW11VO40, degrades MB under 20 W visible light source within 180 min. The effect of various operating parameters, such as photocatalyst concentration, pH, time, and initial dye concentration, were assessed in the degradation of both dyes. The photoelectrochemical performance of the as-synthesized polyoxometalates shows that the Ag4PW11VO40 shows 2.4 times higher photocurrent density than Na2W6O19 at a potential of 0.9 V vs. Ag/AgCl. Electrochemical impedance analysis reveals that Ag4PW11VO40 exhibits much lower charge transfer resistance as compared to Na2W6O19, which indicates facile charge transfer at the electrode-electrolyte interface. Further Mott-Schottky measurements reveal that both the catalysts possess n-type semiconductivity and the charge carrier concentration of Ag4PW11VO40 (5.89 × 1019 cm-3) is 1.4 times higher as compared to Na2W6O19 (4.25 × 1019 cm-3). This work offers a new paradigm for designing polyoxometalates suitable for efficient photocatalytic degradation of organic dyes.

Photocatalytic evaluation of synthesized MnO2/Fe3O4 NCs by Q. infectoria extract for removal Ni(II) and phenol: Study phytochemical, kinetics, thermodynamics, and antibioactivity

In the present study, the plant extract of the Quercus infectoria galls was used as a reducing, capping, and stabilizer agent for green synthesized MnO2 nanoparticles (NPs) and MnO2/Fe3O4 nanocomposites (NCs) due to its reduction ability from polyphenol and antioxidant content. The green synthesized nanomaterials have been characterized by various techniques such as FTIR, UV-vis, XRD, SEM, EDS, and TEM. The average size of about 7.4 and 6.88 nm was estimated for the NCs crystals of SEM images and XRD analysis by the Scherrer and Williamson-Hall methods. The green synthesized MnO2/Fe3O4 NCs (dosage: 0.1 g) have shown high photocatalytic activity for the removal of Ni(II) in acidic and basic solutions under visible irradiation (220 V lamp). The removal efficiency for the Ni(II) solution (3.6 × 10-3 M) at pH = 3 was increased to pH = 12 from 56 % to 98 %. The oxidase-like activity of MnO2/Fe3O4 NCs at different dosages (0.05, 0.1, and 0.15 g) for the removal and colorimetric of phenol (1 g/40 mL) in the presence 4-AAp (1 g) was seen after only 28, 13, and 5 s, respectively. The kinetic evaluation results showed the pseudo-second-order kinetics model closely matched the adsorption capacity theoretical values qe,cal (578.03, 854.70, 892.85, and 917.43 mg.g-1) and experimental values qe,exp (521.84, 839.74, 887.86, and 913.22 mg.g-1) at different initial pH solution (3-12) for Ni(II) removal. In addition, the investigation of isotherm models revealed that the Langmuir model (R2 = 0.9955) explains a better estimate for a monolayer and favorable removal of Ni(II) ions onto NCs. Also, the low Temkin constant, BT < 0 (0.0200 kJ.mol-1), and positive ∆H° value (0.103 kJ.mol-1.K-1) illustrated that Ni(II) removal is physical sorption and endothermic process. However, the obtained thermodynamic results showed the negative values ΔG° with the increase in temperature (303-318 K) toward a spontaneous removal process of Ni(II). Finally, the plant antioxidant (200 to 3200 μg/mL) and antimicrobial activities (0.001 to 0.1 g/mL) for plant extract, MnO2 NPs, and MnO2/Fe3O4 NCs were evaluated against Gram-positive and Gram-negative bacteria species.

Reveal molecular mechanism on the effects of silver nanoparticles on nitrogen transformation and related functional microorganisms in an agricultural soil

Silver nanoparticles (AgNPs) are widely present in aquatic and soil environment, raising significant concerns about their impacts on creatures in ecosystem. While the toxicity of AgNPs on microorganisms has been reported, their effects on biogeochemical processes and specific functional microorganisms remain relatively unexplored. In this study, a 28-day microcosmic experiment was conducted to investigate the dose-dependent effects of AgNPs (10 mg and 100 mg Ag kg-1 soil) on nitrogen transformation and functional microorganisms in agricultural soils. The molecular mechanisms were uncovered by examining change in functional microorganisms and metabolic pathways. To enable comparison, the toxicity of positive control with an equivalent Ag+ dose from CH3COOAg was also included. The results indicated that both AgNPs and CH3COOAg enhanced nitrogen fixation and nitrification, corresponding to increased relative abundances of associated functional genes. However, they inhibited denitrification via downregulating nirS, nirK, and nosZ genes as well as reducing nitrate and nitrite reductase activities. In contrast to high dose of AgNPs, low levels increased bacterial diversity. AgNPs and CH3COOAg altered the activities of associated metabolic pathways, resulting in the enrichment of specific taxa that demonstrated tolerance to Ag. At genus level, AgNPs increased the relative abundances of nitrogen-fixing Microvirga and Bacillus by 0.02 %-629.39 % and 14.44 %-30.10 %, respectively, compared with control group (CK). The abundances of denitrifying bacteria, such as Rhodoplanes, Pseudomonas, and Micromonospora, decreased by 19.03 % to 32.55 %, 24.73 % to 50.05 %, and 15.66 % to 76.06 %, respectively, compared to CK. CH3COOAg reduced bacterial network complexity, diminished the symbiosis mode compared to AgNPs. The prediction of genes involved in metabolic pathways related to membrane transporter and cell motility showed sensitive to AgNPs exposure in the soil. Further studies involving metabolomics are necessary to reveal the essential effects of AgNPs and CH3COOAg on biogeochemical cycle of elements in agricultural soil.

Biogenic synthesis of novel nanomaterials and their applications

Despite the many benefits derived from the unique features and practicality of nanoparticles, the release of their toxic by-products or products from the synthesis stage into the environment could negatively impact natural resources and organisms. The physical and chemical methods for nanoparticle synthesis involve high energy consumption and the use of hazardous chemicals, respectively, going against the principles of green chemistry. Biological methods of synthesis that rely on extracts from a broad range of natural plants, and microorganisms, such as fungi, bacteria, algae, and yeast, have emerged as viable alternatives to the physical and chemical methods. Nanoparticles synthesized through biogenic pathways are particularly useful for biological applications that have high concerns about contamination. Herein, we review the physical and chemical methods of nanoparticle synthesis and present a detailed overview of the biogenic methods used for the synthesis of different nanoparticles. The major points discussed in this study are the following: (1) the fundamentals of the physical and chemical methods of nanoparticle syntheses, (2) the use of different biological precursors (microorganisms and plant extracts) to synthesize gold, silver, selenium, iron, and other metal nanoparticles, and (3) the applications of biogenic nanoparticles in diverse fields of study, including the environment, health, material science, and analytical chemistry.

Novel g-C3N4/PrFeO3 nanocomposites with Z-scheme structure and superior photocatalytic activity toward visible-light-driven removal of tetracycline antibiotics

In the presented work, heterostructured nanocomposites based on g-C3N4 and PrFeO3 with different mass content of PrFeO3 (0-10 wt%) were prepared by ultrasonic processing to study their photocatalytic activity in the process of antibiotic degradation under visible light. The study of phase composition, structural, morphological and textural characteristics carried out by powder X-ray diffraction, scanning electron microscopy and adsorption-structural analysis confirmed the presence of two phases - graphite-like C3N4 and orthorhombic PrFeO3 with average crystallite sizes of 5 and 21 nm and mesoporous structure with specific surface area of 57.2-68.6 m2/g and average pore size of 20 nm. The measured values of the forbidden bandwidth for the obtained nanocomposites were ∼3 eV, indicating potential activity under visible light irradiation. The efficiency of antibiotic removal under visible light was evaluated in the degradation of TCHCl. It was found that 5 % PrFeO3 content was optimal and increased the TOF by 5 times compared to pure g-C3N4. The results of photocatalytic test with absorbers showed that photocatalysis occurs by Z-scheme mechanism. The results obtained allow us to consider this nanocomposite as an effective and stable photocatalyst for pharmaceutical wastewater treatment.

Bio-based functionalized adsorptive polymers for sustainable water decontamination: A systematic review of challenges and real-world implementation

The overwhelming concerns of water pollution, industrial discharges and environmental deterioration by various organic and inorganic substances, including dyes, heavy metals, pesticides, pharmaceuticals, and detergents, intrinsically drive the search for urgent and efficacious decontamination techniques. This review illustrates the various approaches to remediation, their fundamentals, characteristics and demerits. In this manner, the advantageous implementation of nature-based adsorbents has been outlined and discussed. Different types of lignocellulosic compounds (cellulose, lignin, chitin, chitosan, starch) have been introduced, and the most used biopolymeric materials in bioremediation have been highlighted; their merits, synthesis methods, properties and performances in aqueous medium decontamination have been described. The literature assessment reveals the genuine interest and dependence of academic and industrial fields to valorize biopolymers in the adsorption of various hazardous substances. Yet, the full potential of this approach is still confined by certain constraints, such as the lack of reliable, substantial, and efficient extraction of biopolymers, as well as their modest and inconsistent physicochemical properties. The futuristic reliance on such biomaterials in all fields, rather than adsorption, is inherently reliable on in-depth investigations and understanding of their features and mechanisms, which can guarantee a real-world application and green technologies.

Toxicological, hepato-renal, endocrine disruption, oxidative stress and immunohistopathological responses of chitosan capped gold nanocomposite on Biomphalaria alexandrina snails

The present investigation aimed to synthesize chitosan‑gold nanocomposites (Ch-AuNPs) with gamma radiation, then to evaluate its toxic effect on the freshwater snails Biomphalaia alexandrina. Results showed that Ch-AuNPs is spherical shaped with average size 12 nm. It had a toxic effect against B. alexandrina snails with LC50 20.43 mg/l. Exposure of B. alexandrina snails to LC10 7.51 or LC25 13.63 mg/l of Ch-AuNPs, reduced the survival, reproductive and fecundity rates; total protein and albumin; both testosterone (T) and 17β Estradiol (E) levels; SOD and CAT activities of exposed snails while increased the activities of transaminases (AST & ALT), uric acid, creatinine, TAC and MDA levels compared to the control group. Results were supported by histopathological and immunohistopathological alterations of the digestive and hermaphrodite glands. In conclusion B. alexandrina could be used as a model to screen the negative impact of nanomaterials. Also, Ch-AuNPs could be used as a molluscicidal agent.

Removal of water pollutants using plant-based nanoscale zero-valent iron: A review

Nanotechnology has been increasingly explored for the treatment of various waste streams. Among different nanoparticles, nanoscale zerovalent iron (nZVI) has been extensively investigated due to its high reactivity and strong reducing power. However, conventional methods for the synthesis of nZVI particles have several limitations and led to the green synthesis of nZVI using plant-based materials. Plant extracts contain various reducing agents that can be used for nZVI synthesis, eliminating the need for toxic chemicals, and reducing energy consumption. Additionally, each plant species used for nZVI synthesis results in unique physicochemical properties of the nanoparticles. This review paper provides an overview of plant-based nZVI particle synthesis, its characteristics, and its application for the removal of different classes of pollutants such as dyes, heavy metals, nutrients, and trace organic pollutants from water. The review shows that continued research on plant-based nZVI particles to fully understand its potential in wastewater treatment, especially for the removal of a wider variety of pollutants, and for improving sustainability and reducing the cost and environmental impact of the process, is necessary.

Catalytic evaluation and in vitro bacterial inactivation of graphitic carbon nitride/carbon sphere doped bismuth oxide quantum dots with evidential in silico analysis

Herein, Bi2O3 quantum dots (QDs) have been synthesized and doped with various concentrations of graphitic carbon nitride (g-C3N4) and a fixed amount of carbon spheres (CS) using a co-precipitation technique. XRD analysis confirmed the presence of monoclinic structure along the space group P21/c and C2/c. Various functional groups and characteristic peaks of (Bi-O) were identified using FTIR spectra. QDs morphology of Bi2O3 showed agglomeration with higher amounts of g-C3N4 by TEM analysis. HR-TEM determined the variation in the d-spacing which increased with increasing dopants. These doping agents were employed to reduce the exciting recombination rate of Bi2O3 QDs by providing more active sites which enhance antibacterial activity. Notably, (6 wt%) g-C3N4/CS-doped Bi2O3 exhibited considerable antimicrobial potential in opposition to E. coli at higher values of concentrations relative to ciprofloxacin. The (3 wt%) g-C3N4/CS-doped Bi2O3 exhibits the highest catalytic potential (97.67%) against RhB in a neutral medium. The compound g-C3N4/CS-Bi2O3 has been suggested as a potential inhibitor of β-lactamaseE. coli and DNA gyraseE. coli based on the findings of a molecular docking study that was in better agreement with in vitro bactericidal activity.

Nanophotocatalysts in biomedicine: Cancer therapeutic, tissue engineering, biosensing, and drug delivery applications

Photocatalysis can be considered as a green technology owing to its excellent potential for sustainability and fulfilling several principles of green chemistry. This process uses light radiation as the primary energy source, preventing or reducing the requirement for artificial light sources and exogenous catalytic entities. Photocatalysis has promising applications in biomedicine such as drug delivery, biosensing, tissue engineering, cancer therapeutics, etc. In targeted cancer therapeutics, photocatalysis can be employed in photodynamic therapy to form reactive oxygen species that damage cancerous cells' structure. Nanophotocatalysts can be used in targeted drug delivery, showing potential applications in nuclear-targeted drug delivery along with specific delivery of chemotherapeutics to cancer cells or tumor sites. On the other hand, in tissue engineering, nanophotocatalysts can be employed in designing scaffolds that promote cell growth and tissue regeneration. However, some important challenges pertaining to the performance of photocatalysis, large-scale production of nanophotocatalysts, optimization of reaction/synthesis conditions, long-term biosafety issues, stability, clinical translation, etc. still need further explorations. Herein, the most recent advancements pertaining to the biomedical applications of nanophotocatalysts are reflected, focusing on drug delivery, tissue engineering, biosensing, and cancer therapeutic potentials.

Green and Sustainable Membranes: A review

Membranes are ubiquitous tools for modern water treatment technology that critically eliminate hazardous materials such as organic, inorganic, heavy metals, and biomedical pollutants. Nowadays, nano-membranes are of particular interest for myriad applications such as water treatment, desalination, ion exchange, ion concentration control, and several kinds of biomedical applications. However, this state-of-the-art technology suffers from some drawbacks, e.g., toxicity and fouling of contaminants, which makes the synthesis of green and sustainable membranes indeed safety-threatening. Typically, sustainability, non-toxicity, performance optimization, and commercialization are concerns centered on manufacturing green synthesized membranes. Thus, critical issues related to toxicity, biosafety, and mechanistic aspects of green-synthesized nano-membranes have to be systematically and comprehensively reviewed and discussed. Herein we evaluate various aspects of green nano-membranes in terms of their synthesis, characterization, recycling, and commercialization aspects. Nanomaterials intended for nano-membrane development are classified in view of their chemistry/synthesis, advantages, and limitations. Indeed, attaining prominent adsorption capacity and selectivity in green-synthesized nano-membranes requires multi-objective optimization of a number of materials and manufacturing parameters. In addition, the efficacy and removal performance of green nano-membranes are analyzed theoretically and experimentally to provide researchers and manufacturers with a comprehensive image of green nano-membrane efficiency under real environmental conditions.

An overview of biogenic metallic nanoparticles for water treatment and purification: the state of the art

The environment is fundamental to human existence, and protecting it from dangerous contaminants should be a top priority for all stakeholders. Reducing garbage output has helped, but as the world's population grows, more waste will be generated. Tons of waste inadvertently and advertently received by environmental matrixes adversely affect the sustainable environment. The pollution caused by these activities affects the environment and human health. Conventional remediation processes ranging from chemical, physical, and biological procedures use macroaggregated materials and microorganisms to degrade or remove pollutants. Undesirable limitations of expensiveness, disposal challenges, maintenance, and formation of secondary contaminants abound. Additionally, multiple stages of treatments to remove different contaminants are time-consuming. The need to avoid these limitations and shift towards sustainable approaches brought up nanotechnology options. Currently, nanomaterials are being used for environmental rejuvenation that involves the total degradation of pollutants without secondary pollution. As nanoparticles are primed with vast and modifiable reactive sites for adsorption, photocatalysis, and disinfection, they are more useful in remediating pollutants. Review articles on metallic nanoparticles usually focus on chemically synthesized ones, with a particular focus on their adsorption capacity and toxicities. Therefore, this review evaluates the current status of biogenic metallic nanoparticles for water treatment and purification.

Carboxymethyl cellulose nanocolloids anchored Pd(0) nanoparticles (CMC@Pd NPs): synthesis, characterization, and catalytic application in transfer hydrogenation

Herein, we report on the preparation of novel colloidal system based on carboxymethyl cellulose (CMC) and Pd nanoparticles (CMC@Pd NPs) via an ecofriendly auto-reduction process under mild conditions. In the first step, the follow-up of reduction and preparation of CMC anchored palladium nanoparticles (Pd NPs) in aqueous solution was carried out using UV-Vis spectroscopy. Thereafter, the monodispersed colloids were fully characterized by advanced analytical, structural, and morphological techniques. Based on Scherrer equation, the as-synthesized CMC@Pd NPs crystallite size was about 10.88 nm. Accordingly, the detailed microscopic study revealed CMC nanocolloids anchored uniform distribution of Pd NPs and the presence of CMC nanofilm as protective monolayer. To the best of our knowledge, the observed nanoscale properties are reported for the first time for CMC-M system. The performance of the as-synthesized CMC@Pd nanocolloids was first investigated in the reduction of 4-nitrophenol, as a model substrate, to 4-aminophenol using NaBH4 as a hydrogen source. Moreover, the catalytic reduction of various nitroarenes bearing electron withdrawing or donating substituents was carried out and monitored by UV-Vis spectroscopy. The chemo- and regioselectivity of the catalytic reduction in presence of CMC@Pd NPs were also studied. Consequently, the prepared CMC@Pd nanocolloids exhibit remarkable activity, good heterogeneity, and higher reusability and stability for the catalytic reduction reaction under mild conditions.

One-step simultaneous biomass synthesis of iron nanoparticles using tea extracts for the removal of metal(loid)s in acid mine drainage

Acid Mine Drainage (AMD) contains various metal/metalloid ions such as Fe, Cu, and As, which all impact seriously on mine ecosystems. Currently, the commonly used chemical methods for treating AMD may cause secondary pollution to appear in the environment. In this study, one-step simultaneous biomass synthesis of iron nanoparticles (Fe NPs) using tea extracts for the removal of heavy metals/metalloids in AMD is proposed. Characterizations revealed that the Fe NPs presented severely agglomerated particles with an average particle size of 119.80 ± 4.94 nm, on which various AMD-derived metal(loid)s, including As, Cu, and Ni, were uniformly dispersed. The biomolecules participating in the reaction in the tea extract were identified as polyphenols, organic acids, and sugars, which acted as complexing agents, reducing agents, covering/stabilizing agents, and promoted electron transfer. Meanwhile, the best reaction conditions (reaction time = 3.0 h, volume ratio of AMD and tea extract = 1.0:1.5, concentration of extract = 60 g/L, and T = 303 K) were obtained. Finally, the simultaneous formation of Fe NPs and their removal of heavy metals/metalloids from AMD was proposed, mainly involving the formation of Fe NPs and adsorption, co-precipitation, and reduction processes of heavy metals/metalloids.

Updates on Biogenic Metallic and Metal Oxide Nanoparticles: Therapy, Drug Delivery and Cytotoxicity

The ambition to combat the issues affecting the environment and human health triggers the development of biosynthesis that incorporates the production of natural compounds by living organisms via eco-friendly nano assembly. Biosynthesized nanoparticles (NPs) have various pharmaceutical applications, such as tumoricidal, anti-inflammatory, antimicrobials, antiviral, etc. When combined, bio-nanotechnology and drug delivery give rise to the development of various pharmaceutics with site-specific biomedical applications. In this review, we have attempted to summarize in brief the types of renewable biological systems used for the biosynthesis of metallic and metal oxide NPs and the vital contribution of biogenic NPs as pharmaceutics and drug carriers simultaneously. The biosystem used for nano assembly further affects the morphology, size, shape, and structure of the produced nanomaterial. The toxicity of the biogenic NPs, because of their pharmacokinetic behavior in vitro and in vivo, is also discussed, together with some recent achievements towards enhanced biocompatibility, bioavailability, and reduced side effects. Because of the large biodiversity, the potential biomedical application of metal NPs produced via natural extracts in biogenic nanomedicine is yet to be explored.

Recent progress on plant extract-mediated biosynthesis of ZnO-based nanocatalysts for environmental remediation: Challenges and future outlooks

The plant extract mediated green synthesis of nanomaterials has attracts enormous interest due to its cost-effectiveness, greener, and environmentally friendly. It is also considered as an alternative and facile method in which the phytochemicals can be used as a natural capping and reducing agents and helped to produce nanomaterials with high surface area, different sizes, and shapes. One of the materials fabricated using green methods is zinc oxide (ZnO) semiconductor due to its enormous applications in different field areas. In this review, an overview of recent progress on green synthesized ZnO-based catalysts and various modification methods for the purpose of enhancing the catalytic activity of ZnO and the corresponding structural-activity and interactions towards the removal of pollutants are highlighted. Particularly, the plant extract mediated ZnO-based photocatalysts application for the removal of pollutants via photocatalytic degradation, reduction reaction, and adsorption mechanism are demonstrated. Besides, the opportunities, challenges, and future outlooks of ZnO-based materials for environmental remediation with green and sustainable methods are also included. We believe that this review is a timely and comprehensive review on the recent progress related to plant extract mediated ZnO-based nanocatalysts synthesis and applications for environmental remediation.

A comprehensive review on the potential of microbial enzymes in multipollutant bioremediation: Mechanisms, challenges, and future prospects

Industrialization and other human activity represent significant environmental hazards. Toxic contaminants can harm a comprehensive platform of living organisms in their particular environments. Bioremediation is an effective remediation process in which harmful pollutants are eliminated from the environment using microorganisms or their enzymes. Microorganisms in the environment often create a variety of enzymes that can eliminate hazardous contaminants by using them as a substrate for development and growth. Through their catalytic reaction mechanism, microbial enzymes may degrade and eliminate harmful environmental pollutants and transform them into non-toxic forms. The principal types of microbial enzymes which can degrade most hazardous environmental contaminants include hydrolases, lipases, oxidoreductases, oxygenases, and laccases. Several immobilizations, genetic engineering strategies, and nanotechnology applications have been developed to improve enzyme performance and reduce pollution removal process costs. Until now, the practically applicable microbial enzymes from various microbial sources and their ability to degrade multipollutant effectively or transformation potential and mechanisms are unknown. Hence, more research and further studies are required. Additionally, there is a gap in the suitable approaches considering toxic multipollutants bioremediation using enzymatic applications. This review focused on the enzymatic elimination of harmful contaminants in the environment, such as dyes, polyaromatic hydrocarbons, plastics, heavy metals, and pesticides. Recent trends and future growth for effectively removing harmful contaminants by enzymatic degradation are also thoroughly discussed.

A review on the green synthesis of nanoparticles, their biological applications, and photocatalytic efficiency against environmental toxins

Green synthesis of nanoparticles (NPs) using plant materials and microorganisms has evolved as a sustainable alternative to conventional techniques that rely on toxic chemicals. Recently, green-synthesized eco-friendly NPs have attracted interest for their potential use in various biological applications. Several studies have demonstrated that green-synthesized NPs are beneficial in multiple medicinal applications, including cancer treatment, targeted drug delivery, and wound healing. Additionally, due to their photodegradation activity, green-synthesized NPs are a promising tool in environmental remediation. Photodegradation is a process that uses light and a photocatalyst to turn a pollutant into a harmless product. Green NPs have been found efficient in degrading pollutants such as dyes, herbicides, and heavy metals. The use of microbes and flora in green synthesis technology for nanoparticle synthesis is biologically safe, cost-effective, and eco-friendly. Plants and microbes can now use and accumulate inorganic metallic ions in the environment. Various NPs have been synthesized via the bio-reduction of biological entities or their extracts. There are several biological and environmental uses for biologically synthesized metallic NPs, such as photocatalysis, adsorption, and water purification. Since the last decade, the green synthesis of NPs has gained significant interest in the scientific community. Therefore, there is a need for a review that serves as a one-stop resource that points to relevant and recent studies on the green synthesis of NPs and their biological and photocatalytic efficiency. This review focuses on the green fabrication of NPs utilizing diverse biological systems and their applications in biological and photodegradation processes.

Advancements of Nanotechnology and Nanomaterials in Environmental and Human Protection for Combatting the COVID-19 During and Post-pandemic Era: A Comprehensive Scientific Review

In December 2019, an outbreak of unknown pneumonia emerged in Wuhan City, Hubei Province, China. It was later identified as the SARS-CoV-2 virus and has since infected over 9 million people in more than 213 countries worldwide. Massive papers on the topic of SARS-CoV-2 that have already been published are necessary to be analyzed and discussed. This paper used the combination of systematic literature network analysis and content analysis to develop a comprehensive discussion related to the use of nanotechnology and materials in environmental and human protection. Its is shown that various efforts have been made to control the transmission of this pandemic. Nanotechnology plays a crucial role in modern vaccine design, as nanomaterials are essential tools for antigen delivery, adjuvants, and mimics of viral structures. In addition, nanomaterials and nanotechnology also reported a crucial role in environmental protection for defence and treating the pandemic. To eradicate pandemics now and in the future, successful treatments must enable rapid discovery, scalable manufacturing, and global distribution. In this review, we discuss the current approaches to COVID-19 development and highlight the critical role of nanotechnology and nanomaterials in combating the virus in the human body and the environment.

Graphene oxide/polyvinylpyrrolidone-doped MoO3 nanocomposites used for dye degradation and their antibacterial activity: a molecular docking analysis

In this study, MoO₃ nanostructures were prepared, doped with various concentrations of graphene oxide (2 and 4% GO) and a fixed amount of polyvinylpyrrolidone (PVP) using the co-precipitation method. The motive of this study was to examine the catalytic and antimicrobial efficacy with evidential molecular docking analyses of GO/PVP-doped MoO₃. GO and PVP were utilized as doping agents to reduce the exciton recombination rate of MoO₃ by providing more active sites that increase the antibacterial activity of MoO₃. The prepared binary dopant (GO and PVP)-dependent MoO₃ was used as an effective antibacterial agent against Escherichia coli (E. coli). Notably, 4% GO/PVP-doped MoO₃ showed good bactericidal potential against E. coli at higher concentrations in comparison to ciprofloxacin. Furthermore, in silico docking revealed the possible inhibitory impact of the synthesized nanocomposites on folate and fatty acid synthesis enzymes, dihydrofolate reductase and enoyl-[acyl carrier protein] reductase, respectively.

pH-Sensitive Gold Nanorods for Non-Steroidal Anti-Inflammatory Drugs (NSAIDs) Delivery and DNA-Binding Studies

A facile experimental protocol for the synthesis of poly(ethylene glycol)-modified (PEGylated) gold nanorods (AuNRs@PEG) is presented as well as an effective drug loading procedure using the non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drug (NSAID) naproxen (NAP). The interaction of AuNRs@PEG and drug-loaded AuNRs (AuNRs@PEG@NAP) with calf-thymus DNA was studied at a diverse temperature revealing different interaction modes; AuNRs@PEG may interact via groove-binding and AuNRs@PEG@NAP may intercalate to DNA-bases. The cleavage activity of the gold nanoparticles for supercoiled circular pBR322 plasmid DNA was studied by gel electrophoresis while their affinity for human and bovine serum albumins was also evaluated. Drug-release studies revealed a pH-sensitive behavior with a release up to a maximum of 24% and 33% NAP within the first 180 min at pH = 4.2 and 6.8, respectively. The cytotoxicity of AuNRs@PEG and AuNRs@PEG@NAP was evaluated against MCF-7 and MDA-MB-231 breast cancer cell lines. The development of AuNRs as an efficient non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAIDs) delivery system for chemotherapy is still in its infancy. The present work can shed light and inspire other research groups to work in this direction.

Enhanced activity of Fe/Mn nanoparticles using a response surface methodology and mechanism for removing oxytetracycline and copper ion

As feed additives, oxytetracycline (OTC) and copper ion (Cu(II)) are often detected in livestock and poultry farming wastewater. To address this issue, firstly, the synthesis conditions of Fe/Mn nanoparticles (Fe/Mn NPs) were initially optimized using a response surface methodology (RSM) to yield highly active Fe/Mn NPs, where the application of RSM significantly increased the Fe/Mn NPs' efficiency in removing co-contamination OTC and Cu(II),respectively, from 45.8 to 86.2% and 14.9-67.2%. Secondly, scanning electron microscope and Nitrogen adsorption-desorption isotherms results showed that Fe/Mn NPs were composed of elliptic particles between 20 and 40 nm, a specific surface area of 59.5 m² g^-1, and a mean pore diameter of 5.27 nm. Fourier infrared spectrometer and X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy analysis revealed that amino, carboxyl and hydroxyl functional groups existed on the surface. Zeta potential indicated that Fe/Mn NPs maintained a high negative charge density between pH 1 and 11. These surface properties possessed by the green synthesized Fe/Mn NPs resulted in high adsorption efficiency for co-contamination OTC and Cu(II). Based on this, a removal mechanism based on a combination of complex-bridging effect, pore-filling, hydrogen bonding, surface complexation, ion exchange and electrostatic attraction was proposed. Finally, the assessment of Fe/Mn NPs used in swine wastewater demonstrated that both 99.9% OTC and 55.6% Cu(II) were removed.

Today, researchers have focused on the application of environmentally-benign and sustainable micro- and nanosystems for drug delivery and cancer therapy. Compared to conventional chemotherapeutics, advanced micro- and nanosystems designed by applying abundant, natural, and renewable feedstocks have shown biodegradability, biocompatibility, and low toxicity advantages. However, important aspects of toxicological assessments, clinical translational studies, and suitable functionalization/modification still need to be addressed. Herein, the benefits and challenges of green nanomedicine in cancer nanotherapy and targeted drug delivery are cogitated using nanomaterials designed by exploiting natural and renewable resources. The application of nanomaterials accessed from renewable natural resources, comprising metallic nanomaterials, carbon-based nanomaterials, metal-organic frameworks, natural-derived nanomaterials, etc. for targeted anticancer drug delivery and cancer nanotherapy are deliberated, with emphasis on important limitations/challenges and future perspectives.

Bismuth Vanadate (BiVO4) Nanostructures: Eco-Friendly Synthesis and Their Photocatalytic Applications

Green nanotechnology plays an important role in designing environmentally-benign and sustainable synthesis techniques to provide safer products for human health and environments. In this context, the synthesis of bismuth vanadate (BiVO4) nanoparticles (NPs) based on green chemistry principles with the advantages of eco-friendliness, cost-effectiveness, and simplicity has been explored by researchers. Despite the advantages of these synthesis techniques, crucial aspects regarding their repeatability and large-scale production still need to be comprehensively explored. BiVO4 NPs have shown excellent potential in the pharmaceutical industry, cancer therapy, and photocatalysis. BiVO4 particles with monoclinic scheelite structures have been widely investigated for their environmental applications owing to their fascinating optical and electrical properties as well as their high stability and unique crystal structure properties. These NPs with good photostability and resistance to photocorrosion can be considered as promising nanophotocatalysts for degradation of pollutants including organic dyes and pharmaceutical wastes. However, additional explorations should be moved toward the optimization of reaction/synthesis conditions and associated photocatalytic mechanisms. Herein, recent developments regarding the environmentally-benign fabrication of BiVO4 NPs and their photocatalytic degradation of pollutants are deliberated, with a focus on challenges and future directions.

Synthesis and Structure of ZnO-Decorated Graphitic Carbon Nitride (g-C3N4) with Improved Photocatalytic Activity under Visible Light

The volume of dye production in the chemical industry is growing rapidly every year. Given the global importance of clean water resources, new wastewater treatment solutions are required. Utilizing photocatalysis by harvesting solar energy represents a facile and promising solution for removing dangerous pollutants. This study reports the possibility of increasing the photocatalytic activity of g-C3N4 by creating nanocomposites with ZnO. Exfoliated g-C3N4/ZnO nanocomposites were synthesized by heat treatment of urea and subsequent ultrasonic exfoliation of the colloidal solution by introducing zinc acetate. The uniformity of the distribution of ZnO nanoparticles is confirmed by the method of elemental mapping. The obtained X-ray diffractograms of the obtained nanocomposites show typical X-ray reflections for g-C3N4 and ZnO. It was found that the introduction of oxide into g-C3N4 leads to an increase in the specific surface area values due to the developed ZnO surface. The maximum value of the specific surface area was obtained for a sample containing 7.5% ZnO and was 75.2 m2/g. The g-C3N4/7.5% ZnO sample also demonstrated increased photocatalytic activity during the decomposition of methylene blue under the influence of visible light, which led to a twofold increase in the reaction rate compared to initial g-C3N4.

An Evaluation of the Biocatalyst for the Synthesis and Application of Zinc Oxide Nanoparticles for Water Remediation—A Review

Global water scarcity is threatening the lives of humans, and it is exacerbated by the contamination of water, which occurs because of increased industrialization and soaring population density. The available conventional physical and chemical water treatment techniques are hazardous to living organisms and are not environmentally friendly, as toxic chemical elements are used during these processes. Nanotechnology has presented a possible way in which to solve these issues by using unique materials with desirable properties. Zinc oxide nanoparticles (ZnO NPs) can be used effectively and efficiently for water treatment, along with other nanotechnologies. Owing to rising concerns regarding the environmental unfriendliness and toxicity of nanomaterials, ZnO NPs have recently been synthesized through biologically available and replenishable sources using a green chemistry or green synthesis protocol. The green-synthesized ZnO NPs are less toxic, more eco-friendly, and more biocompatible than other chemically and physically synthesized materials. In this article, the biogenic synthesis and characterization techniques of ZnO NPs using plants, bacteria, fungi, algae, and biological derivatives are reviewed and discussed. The applications of the biologically prepared ZnO NPs, when used for water treatment, are outlined. Additionally, their mechanisms of action, such as the photocatalytic degradation of dyes, the production of reactive oxygen species (ROS), the generation of compounds such as hydrogen peroxide and superoxide, Zn2+ release to degrade microbes, as well as their adsorbent properties with regard to heavy metals and other contaminants in water bodies, are explained. Furthermore, challenges facing the green synthesis of these nanomaterials are outlined. Future research should focus on how nanomaterials should reach the commercialization stage, and suggestions as to how this ought to be achieved are presented.

MXene-Based Composites as Nanozymes in Biomedicine: A Perspective

MXene-based nanozymes have garnered considerable attention because of their potential environmental and biomedical applications. These materials encompass alluring and manageable catalytic performances and physicochemical features, which make them suitable as (bio)sensors with high selectivity/sensitivity and efficiency. MXene-based structures with suitable electrical conductivity, biocompatibility, large surface area, optical/magnetic properties, and thermal/mechanical features can be applied in designing innovative nanozymes with area-dependent electrocatalytic performances. Despite the advances made, there is still a long way to deploy MXene-based nanozymes, especially in medical and healthcare applications; limitations pertaining the peroxidase-like activity and sensitivity/selectivity may restrict further practical applications of pristine MXenes. Thus, developing an efficient surface engineering tactic is still required to fabricate multifunctional MXene-based nanozymes with excellent activity. To obtain MXene-based nanozymes with unique physicochemical features and high stability, some crucial steps such as hybridization and modification ought to be performed. Notably, (nano)toxicological and long-term biosafety analyses along with clinical translation studies still need to be comprehensively addressed. Although very limited reports exist pertaining to the biomedical potentials of MXene-based nanozymes, the future explorations should transition toward the extensive research and detailed analyses to realize additional potentials of these structures in biomedicine with a focus on clinical and industrial aspects. In this perspective, therapeutic, diagnostic, and theranostic applications of MXene-based nanozymes are deliberated with a focus on future perspectives toward more successful clinical translational studies. The current state-of-the-art biomedical advances in the use of MXene-based nanozymes, as well as their developmental challenges and future prospects are also highlighted. In view of the fascinating properties of MXene-based nanozymes, these materials can open significant new opportunities in the future of bio- and nanomedicine.

Nanomaterials as a sustainable choice for treating wastewater

Wastewater containing toxic substances is a major threat to the health of both aquatic and terrestrial ecosystems. In order to treat wastewater, nanomaterials are currently being studied intensively due to their unprecedented properties. The unique features of nanoparticles are prompting an increasing number of studies into their use in wastewater treatment. Although several studies have been undertaken in recent years, most of them did not focus on some of the nanomaterials that are now often utilized for wastewater treatment. It is essential to investigate the most recent advances in all the types of nanomaterials that are now frequently employed for wastewater treatment. The recent advancements in common nanomaterials used for sustainable wastewater treatment is comprehensively reviewed in this paper. This paper also thoroughly assesses unique features, proper utilization, future prospects, and current limitations of green nanotechnology in wastewater treatment. Zero-valent metal and metal oxide nanoparticles, especially iron oxides were shown to be more effective than traditional carbon nanotubes (CNTs) for recovering heavy metals in wastewater. Iron oxide achieved 75.9% COD (chemical oxygen demand) removal efficiency while titanium oxide (TiO₂) achieved 75.5% COD. Iron nanoparticles attained 72.1% methyl blue removal efficiency. However, since only a few types of nanomaterials have been commercialized, it is important to also focus on the economic feasibility of each nanomaterial. This study found that the large surface area, high reactivity, and strong mechanical properties of nanoparticles means they can be considered as a promising option for successful wastewater treatment.

An updated review on environmental occurrence, scientific assessment and removal of brominated flame retardants by engineered nanomaterials

Due to the extensive manufacturing and use of brominated flame retardants (BFRs), they are known to be hazardous, bioaccumulative, and recalcitrant pollutants in various environmental matrices. BFRs make flame-resistant items for industrial purposes (textiles, electronics, and plastics equipment) that are disposed of in massive amounts and leak off in various environmental matrices. The consumption of plastic items has expanded tremendously during the COVID-19 pandemic which has resulted into the increasing load of solid waste on land and water. Some BFRs, such as polybrominated diphenyl ethers (PBDEs) and hexabromocyclododecane (HBCDs), are no longer utilized or manufactured owing to their negative impacts, which promotes the utilization of new BFRs as alternatives. BFRs have been discovered worldwide in soil, sludge, water, and other contamination sources. Various approaches such as photocatalysis-based oxidation/reduction, adsorption, and heat treatment have been found to eradicate BFRs from the environment. Nanomaterials with unique properties are one of the most successful methodologies for removing BFRs via photocatalysis. These methods have been praised for being low-cost, quick, and highly efficient. Engineered nanoparticles degraded BFRs when exposed to light and either convert them into safer metabolites or completely mineralize. Scientific assessment of research taking place in this area during the past five years has been discussed. This review offers comprehensive details on environmental occurrence, toxicity, and removal of BFRs from various sources. Degradation pathways and different removal strategies related to data have also been presented. An attempt has also been made to highlight the research gaps prevailing in the current research area.

The state-of-the-art development of photocatalysts for the degradation of persistent herbicides in wastewater

Herbicides are one of the most recurring pollutants in the aquatic system due to their widespread usage in the agriculture sector for weed control. Semiconductor-based photocatalysts have gained recognition due to their ability to degrade and mineralize pollutants into harmless by-products completely. Lately, many studies have been done to design photocatalysts with efficient separation of photogenerated charge carriers and enhanced light absorption. Photocatalyst engineering through doping with metal and non-metal elements and the formation of heterojunction are proven effective for minimizing the recombination of electron-hole pairs and enlarging the absorption in the visible light region. This review focuses on discussing and evaluating the recent progress in the types of photocatalysts and their performance in the remediation of herbicides in wastewater. The development of innovative hybrid technologies is also highlighted. The limitations and challenges of photocatalysis technology in the present literature have been identified, and future studies are recommended.

Functionalized Silver and Gold Nanomaterials with Diagnostic and Therapeutic Applications

The functionalization of nanomaterials with suitable capping ligands or bioactive agents is an interesting strategy in designing nanosystems with suitable applicability and biocompatibility; the physicochemical and biological properties of these nanomaterials can be highly improved for biomedical applications. In this context, numerous explorations have been conducted in the functionalization of silver (Ag) and gold (Au) nanomaterials using suitable functional groups or agents to design nanosystems with unique physicochemical properties such as excellent biosensing capabilities, biocompatibility, targeting features, and multifunctionality for biomedical purposes. Future studies should be undertaken for designing novel functionalization tactics to improve the properties of Au- and Ag-based nanosystems and reduce their toxicity. The possible release of cytotoxic radicals or ions, the internalization of nanomaterials, the alteration of cellular signaling pathways, the translocation of these nanomaterials across the cell membranes into mitochondria, DNA damages, and the damage of cell membranes are the main causes of their toxicity, which ought to be comprehensively explored. In this study, recent advancements in diagnostic and therapeutic applications of functionalized Au and Ag nanomaterials are deliberated, focusing on important challenges and future directions.

Molluscicidal and biochemical effects of green-synthesized F-doped ZnO nanoparticles against land snail Monacha cartusiana under laboratory and field conditions

The glass clover snail, Monacha cartusiana (M. cartusiana) is one of the most seriously impacting economic animal pests spreading across Egypt which inflicts severe damages to the agriculture. A green route is developed by deploying an abundant Rosemary plant leaves aqueous extract to synthesize ZnO and F-doped ZnO (F-ZnO) nanoparticles (NPs) that display high molluscicidal activities against the M. cartusiana land snails via leaf dipping and contact techniques. The effect of lethal concentrations, that kills 50% of exposed snails (LC50) value of the treatments, is examined on the activity of alkaline phosphatase (ALP), aspartate aminotransferase (AST), alanine aminotransferase (ALT), enzymes, total protein (TP), total lipids (TL) and cholesterol level of snails, including the histopathological evaluation of the digestive gland and foot of M. Cartusiana. Their molluscicidal activity as poisonous baits under field conditions is also evaluated and compared to the recommended molluscicide, Neomyl. The results show that F^- doping dramatically improves the snail control capability of ZnO NPs, and promotes a considerable increase in both ALT and AST enzymes with an enhancement of TL and Cholesterol levels, but a significant decrease in TP content and ALP activity in treated snails compared to the control group. The LC₅₀ values are found to be 1381.55 and 2197.59 ppm using the leaf dipping for F-ZnO and ZnO, while 237.51 and 245.90 ppm can be achieved using the contact technique, respectively. The greenly synthesized F-ZnO and ZnO NPs induce severe histological alterations in the digestive gland and foot of M. cartusiana, including a complete destruction of the digestive tubules. The histological evaluation of the foot of M. cartusiana exposed to ZnO, shows a rupture of the epithelial layer of the foot sole, while F- ZnO NPs causes the folds of the foot becoming deeper and the rupture of epithelial layer. Our field experiments further demonstrate that F-ZnO achieves 60.08% reduction, while ZnO attains 56.39% diminution in snail population compared to the commercial, Neomyl (69.55%), exhibiting great potentials in controlling the harmful land snail populations.

Bioaerogels, the emerging technology for wastewater treatment: A comprehensive review on synthesis, properties and applications

Over the past decade use of aerogels has received much attention as an emerging technology for wastewater treatment. However, production of aerogels is not environment-friendly. Owing to its excellent properties such as porosity, three-dimensional structure, being amenable to chemical modifications, it is imperative to devise strategies for their improved production and use. Bioaerogels are non-toxic and most of their precursor compounds are biomass-derived. This review aims to present a comprehensive report on survey of existing literature published on the use of bioaerogels for removal of all major categories of water contaminants, namely, heavy metals, industrial dyes, oil, organic compounds and pharmaceuticals. It also gives critical analysis of the lacunae in the existing knowledge such as lack of studies on domestic sewage, emerging pollutants, toxicity of raw materials and adequate disposal of used adsorbents. Proposals of overcoming the limitations in the applicability of bioaerogels, like combining constructed wetlands with use of bioaerogels, among others have been discussed. In this review, emphasis has been given on production of bioaerogels, with an aim to underscore the potential of valorization of biomass waste to develop novel materials for wastewater treatment in an effort towards creating a circular and green economy.

MXene-Chitosan Composites and Their Biomedical Potentials

Today, MXenes with fascinating electronic, thermal, optical, and mechanical features have been broadly studied for biomedical applications, such as drug/gene delivery, photothermal/photodynamic therapy, antimicrobials/antivirals, sensing, tissue engineering, and regenerative medicine. In this context, various MXene-polymer composites have been designed to improve the characteristics such as physiological stability, sustained/controlled release behaviors, biodegradability, biocompatibility, selectivity/sensitivity, and functionality. Chitosan with advantages of ease of modification, biodegradability, antibacterial activities, non-toxicity, and biocompatibility can be considered as attractive materials for designing hybridized composites together with MXenes. These hybrid composites ought to be further explored for biomedical applications because of their unique properties such as high photothermal conversion efficiency, improved stability, selectivity/sensitivity, stimuli-responsiveness behaviors, and superior antibacterial features. These unique structural, functional, and biological attributes indicate that MXene-chitosan composites are attractive alternatives in biomedical engineering. However, several crucial aspects regarding the surface functionalization/modification, hybridization, nanotoxicological analyses, long-term biosafety assessments, biocompatibility, in vitro/in vivo evaluations, identification of optimization conditions, implementation of environmentally-benign synthesis techniques, and clinical translation studies are still need to be examined by researchers. Although very limited studies have revealed the great potentials of MXene-chitosan hybrids in biomedicine, the next steps should be toward the extensive research and detailed analyses in optimizing their properties and improving their functionality with a clinical and industrial outlook. Herein, recent developments in the use of MXene-chitosan composites with biomedical potentials are deliberated, with a focus on important challenges and future perspectives. In view of the fascinating properties and multifunctionality of MXene-chitosan composites, these hybrid materials can open significant new opportunities in the future for bio- and nano-medicine arena.
