Effects of exercise on depression and anxiety in postmenopausal women: a pairwise and network meta-analysis of randomized controlled trials

BACKGROUND

Exercise has been identified as a promising non-pharmacological therapy for the management of depression, but there is still controversy over which type is most effective. We aimed to compare and rank the types of exercise that improve depression in postmenopausal women by quantifying information from randomized controlled trials (RCTs).

METHODS

The PubMed, Web of Science, SPORTDiscus, CNKI, The Cochrane Library, PsycINFO, EMBASE, and CINAHL Plus databases were searched to identify articles published from inception to 1 March 2024 reporting RCTs that examined the effectiveness of exercise on depression in postmenopausal women. The risk of bias was assessed using the revised Cochrane risk-of-bias tool for RCTs. The quality of the evidence for each comparison was graded using the online confidence in network meta-analysis tool (CINeMA). Standardized mean differences (SMDs) were calculated using the mean and standard deviation of pre-to-post intervention changes and then pooled using a random effects model in a pairwise meta-analysis using Review Manager 5.4. Then, a frequentist network meta-analysis was conducted using a random effects model was conducted to evaluate the efficacy of different exercise types using the network package of Stata 15.

RESULTS

This study included 26 studies involving 2,170 participants. The pairwise meta-analysis revealed that exercise had a significant positive effect on depression in postmenopausal women (SMD = -0.71, 95% confidence interval [CI] = -0.94 to -0.48; I2 = 78%). The network meta-analysis revealed that mind-body exercise (SMD = -0.97, 95% CI = -1.28 to -0.67), aerobic exercise (SMD = -0.58, 95% CI = -0.88 to -0.27) and multicomponent exercise (SMD = -0.57, 95% CI = -1.15 to -0.002) significantly reduced depression compared to the control intervention. Mind-body exercise had the highest probability of being the most effective intervention. Exercise interventions also showed positive effects on anxiety. Most studies were judged to have some concerns regarding their risk of bias, and the confidence in evidence was often very low according to CINeMA.

CONCLUSION

For postmenopausal women, there is very low to moderate quality evidence that exercise interventions are an effective antidepressant therapy, with mind-body exercise most likely being the optimal type.

Temporal trends and age-period-cohort analysis of depression in U.S. adults from 2013 to 2022

BACKGROUND

In the United States, the lifetime prevalence of depression in the US population is 20.6 %. We aimed to understand the temporal trends in the prevalence of depression among adults in the United States during the period 2013-2022 as well as the effects of age, period, and cohort effects on the prevalence of depression.

METHODS

Data from 3,139,488 participants in the U.S. Behavioral Risk Factor Surveillance System (BRFSS) from 2013 to 2022 were used in this study. The joinpoint regression model was used to calculate annual percentage change (APC) and average annual percentage change (AAPC) to learn about the time trends in the prevalence of depression. Age-period-cohort models were used to estimate the effects of age, period, and birth cohort effects on the prevalence of depression.

RESULTS

The prevalence of depression among adults in the United States showed an overall increasing trend from 2013 to 2022. The rate of increase was greater in males than females, with AAPC values of 1.44 % (95 % CI: 0.32-2.18), and 1.23 % (95 % CI: 0.32-2.25), respectively. Regarding the age effect, the risk of depression among adults in the United States generally showed an increasing and then decreasing trend with age. The risk of developing the condition reached its maximum at 50-54 years (RR = 1.28, 95 % CI = 1.26-1.30). Regarding the period effect, the risk of depression among US adults was higher during 2018-2022 than during 2013-2017. The overall cohort effect for depression prevalence was a higher risk for those born later, with a maximum RR of 1.51 (95 % CI: 1.47-1.54).

CONCLUSION

The prevalence of adult depression in the United States is showing an increasing trend. Middle-aged people and those born later in life deserve more attention as high-risk groups. It is recommended that the condition burden of depression be reduced with the promotion of healthy lifestyles, the promotion of interpersonal communication, as well as enhanced mental health education and mental health literacy.

Effects of short- and long-term exposures to multiple air pollutants on depression among the labor force: A nationwide longitudinal study in China

BACKGROUND

Depression prevalence has surged within the labor force population in recent years. While links between air pollutants and depression were explored, there was a notable scarcity of research focusing on the workforce.

METHODS

This nationwide longitudinal study analyzed 27,457 workers aged 15-64. We estimated monthly mean concentrations of fine particulate matter (PM2.5), its primary components, and Ozone (O3) at participants' residences using spatiotemporal models. To assess the relationship between short- (1 to 3 months) and long-term (1 to 2 years) exposure to various air pollutants and depressive levels and occurrences, we employed linear mixed-effects models and mixed-effects logistic regression. We considered potential occupational moderators, such as labor contracts, overtime compensation, and total annual income.

RESULTS

We found significant increases in depression risks within the workforce linked to both short- and long-term air pollution exposure. A 10 μg/m3 rise in 2-year average PM2.5, black carbon (BC), and O3 concentrations correlated with increments in depressive scores of 0.009, 0.173, and 0.010, and a higher likelihood of depression prevalence by 0.5 %, 12.6 %, and 0.7 %. The impacts of air pollutants and depression were more prominent in people without labor contracts, overtime compensation, and lower total incomes.

CONCLUSION

Exposures to air pollutants could increase the risk of depression in the labor force population. The mitigating effects of higher income, benefits, and job security against depression underscore the need for focused mental health interventions.

Level and limitations of physical activity in patients with excess body weight or diabetes

Physical activity (PA) is recommended to prevent or treat many diseases, but various factors may limit it. We analyse the level of PA and the barriers to undertaking it. Patients aged 18-64 with diabetes or at least overweight completed the following questionnaires: International Physical Activity Questionnaire (IPAQ) and Accompanying Survey (AS). For statistical analysis, non-parametric Mann-Whitney U, χ2-Pearson, correspondence analysis and meta-analysis (OR with ±95% CI) were used, and α=0.05 was assumed. Of 191 sets of questionnaires were analysed (67% from women). The median (MD) age for the group was 50.5 years, MD for metabolic equivalents (METs): 2079 (MET-min/week); 16.23% of subjects scored insufficient, 46.07% sufficient and 37.7% high PA according to the IPAQ scale. A relationship between the IPAQ and PA level results from the AS was confirmed (χ2; p=0.00047). The most common reasons indicated for not taking up PA were lack of time due to professional work (49%) and additional duties (32%) as well as fatigue from daily duties (44%). Participants <45 years were more likely to indicate additional duties (p=0.013), participants >45 years illnesses (p=0.04) and people with BMI (body mass index) ≥30 kg/m2, 'fatigue from daily duties' (p=0.019) as an obstacle to undertaking PA. 'Lack of suitable conditions to undertake PA' was indicated more often by patients with primary education (p<0.01), diabetes (p=0.037), after myocardial infarction (p=0.039) and those under psychiatric treatment (p=0.039). Women more often declared a lack of motivation (p=0.018). Residents of big cities and those with BMI ≥30 were more likely to assess their PA as 'insufficient' (p=0.0260 and p=0.0081, respectively). The overwhelming number of respondents who were in the age of professional activity had a sufficient level of PA. The most common barriers to undertaking PA were lack of time and fatigue, related to both work and non-work activities, but specific barriers were also found for women and patients with various diseases.

Blackberry extract prevents lipopolysaccharide-induced depressive-like behavior in female mice: implications for redox status, inflammation, and brain enzymes

ABSTRACTThis study evaluated the effects of Rubus sp. extract on behavioral and neurochemical parameters in female mice submitted to experimental model of depression induced by lipopolysaccharide (LPS). The results indicated that Rubus sp. extract protected against depressive-like behavior induced by LPS. Moreover, the administration of Rubus sp. extract was effective in preventing the increase in reactive species and nitrites levels, as well as the decrease in catalase activity induced by LPS in the cerebral cortex. In the serum, the Rubus sp. extract was effective in preventing the decrease in catalase activity induced by LPS. Treatment with Rubus sp. extract attenuated the increase in acetylcholinesterase activity induced by LPS in the cerebral cortex. Finally, blackberry extract also downregulated IL-1β levels in cerebral cortex. In conclusion, our findings demonstrated that treatment with Rubus sp. exerted antidepressant, antioxidant, anticholinesterase and anti-inflammatory effects in a model of depressive - like behavior induced by LPS in female mice. This highlights Rubus sp. as a potential therapeutic agent for individuals with major depressive disorder.

Prevalence and associated factors of depression in postmenopausal women: a systematic review and meta-analysis

BACKGROUND

Depression is a prevalent mental health problem in postmenopausal women. Given its significant impact on the quality of life and overall well-being of postmenopausal women, there is need for a comprehensive review and meta-analysis of the existing research globally. This systematic review and meta-analysis evaluated the global prevalence of depression and potential associated factors in postmenopausal women.

METHODS

The Cochrane Library, PubMed, EMBASE, Web of Science, MEDLINE, and PsycINFO databases were systematically searched from inception to March 22, 2023. The meta-analysis used the random-effects model to calculate the prevalence of depression rates and associated factors. In addition, subgroup analysis and sensitivity analysis were performed. Publication bias was assessed using funnel plots, Egger's test, and nonparametric trim-and-fill tests.

RESULTS

The meta-analysis included 50 studies that involved 385,092 postmenopausal women. The prevalence of depression in postmenopausal women was 28.00% (95% CI, 25.80-30.10). Among the factors relevant to depression among postmenopausal women, marital status (OR: 2.03, 95%CI: 1.33-3.11), history of mental illness (OR: 2.31, 95%CI: 1.50-3.57), chronic disease (OR: 3.13, 95%CI: 2.20-4.44), menstrual cycle (OR: 1.42, 95%CI: 1.17-1.72), abortion numbers (OR: 1.59, 95%CI: 1.40-1.80), menopausal symptoms (OR: 2.10, 95%CI: 1.52-2.90), and hormone replacement therapy (OR: 1.76, 95%CI: 1.31-2.35) were risk factors, while physical activity (OR: 0.56, 95%CI: 0.53-0.59), number of breastfed infants (OR: 0.43, 95%CI: 0.19-0.97), menopause age (OR: 0.44, 95%CI: 0.37-0.51) were preventive factors.

CONCLUSIONS

This study demonstrated that the prevalence of postmenopausal depression is high, and some risk factors and protective factors associated with it have been identified. It is necessary to improve screening and management and optimize prevention and intervention strategies to reduce the harmful effects of postmenopausal depression.

Association between workplace health promotion service utilisation and depressive symptoms among workers: a nationwide survey

OBJECTIVES

Workplace-related factors are associated with the risk of depression. Despite implementation of workplace health promotion (WHP) programmes in China to promote the physical and mental well-being of workers, the relationship between WHP and depression has received limited attention. This study investigated the association between WHP service utilisation and depressive symptoms among workers.

STUDY DESIGN

This was a cross-sectional survey.

METHODS

A researcher-designed questionnaire was used to collect information on socio-demographic and occupational characteristics, WHP service utilisation, and mental health status. The Lasso method was used for variable selection to achieve dimension reduction, and logistic regression was used to assess the association between WHP service utilisation and depressive symptoms.

RESULTS

The analysis included 11,710 workers, of whom 17.0% had depressive symptoms. Lasso regression resulted in 6 of 18 WHP services showing significant negative associations with depressive symptoms, including occupational safety training, mental health services, health check-ups, sports activities, fitness rooms, and healthy canteens. The logistic regression results showed that, after adjusting for sociodemographic and occupational factors, utilisation of these six services was associated with a decreased likelihood of depressive symptoms. The adjusted odds ratio (aOR) was 0.84 (95% confidence interval [CI]: 0.73-0.96) for occupational safety training, aOR: 0.82 (95% CI: 0.68-0.99) for mental health services, aOR: 0.80 (95% CI: 0.71-0.90) for health check-ups, aOR: 0.68 (95% CI: 0.57-0.80) for sports activities, aOR: 0.59 (95% CI: 0.47-0.74) for fitness rooms and aOR: 0.72 (95% CI: 0.59-0.87) for healthy canteens.

CONCLUSIONS

Utilisation of WHP services was associated with a lower prevalence of depressive symptoms. Implementation of WHP services and the provision of a supportive workplace environment should be prioritised to benefit the mental health of workers.

Daily social comparisons among women in midlife with elevated risk for cardiovascular disease: A within-person test of the identification/contrast model

Women age 40-60 are disproportionately affected by health problems that increase their risk for cardiovascular disease (CVD; e.g. hypertension). Social comparisons (i.e. self-evaluations relative to others) are known to influence health in this and other groups, but their nature and consequences in daily life are poorly understood. We conducted an ecological momentary assessment study over 10 days (5x/day) with 75 women ages 40-60 who had ≥1 CVD risk conditions (MAge = 51.6 years, MBMI = 34.0 kg/m2). Using a mix of frequentist and Bayesian analytic approaches, we examined characteristics of women's naturally occurring comparisons and tested predictions from the Identification/Contrast Model within-person (e.g. identifying with an upward target results in positive affect, whereas contrasting results in negative affect). Comparisons occurred at 21% of moments, with considerable within-person variability in response. In line with predictions from the Identification/Contrast Model, women were more likely to experience positive affect after upward identification or downward contrast and more likely to experience negative affect after upward contrast or downward identification, though observed nuances warrant additional consideration. Overall, findings support the Identification/Contrast Model to describe women's comparison experiences as they occur in daily life. Future work should determine pathways between the immediate consequences of comparisons and longer-term health outcomes.

Sex differences and risk factors of self-reported suicide attempts in middle-aged Chinese Han patients with first-episode drug-naïve anxious depression: a large-scale cross-sectional study

This study aims to investigate sex differences and risk factors for self-reported suicide attempts among Chinese Han middle-aged patients with first-episode drug-naïve (FEDN) anxious depression (AD). A total of 1796 patients with FEDN major depressive disorder were enrolled in this study, including 341 middle-aged patients with AD. We compared the prevalence, demographics, and clinical characteristics of suicide attempts between male and female patients with FEDN middle-aged AD. We also explored the risk factors for self-reported suicide attempts in this population using binary logistic regression analysis. The male/female ratio was 91/250 and the age of onset was 51.50 ± 4.13. Our results showed that there were no significant sex differences in the prevalence of self-reported suicide attempts in middle-aged patients with FEDN AD. However, we did find significant differences in several demographic and clinical characteristics between self-reported suicide attempters and non-suicide attempters. Moreover, severe anxiety, measured by the Hamilton Anxiety Rating Scale score, was identified as a risk factor for self-reported suicide attempts in female middle-aged AD patients. Additionally, elevated thyroid peroxidase antibody (TPOAb) levels were linked to self-reported suicide attempts in male AD patients. Our findings suggest that there are no significant sex differences in the prevalence of self-reported suicide attempts in this population, but there may be sex-specific risk factors for self-reported suicide attempts in middle-aged AD. Clinical psychiatrists need to pay attention to thyroid hormone levels in middle-aged anxious depression.

The Relationship Between Stressful Life Events and Depressive Symptoms in College Students: mediation by Parenting Style and Gender's Moderating Effect

Aim

Stressful life events have a significant impact on the mental health of college students. Depression, as a prevalent psychological issue, has garnered attention in the field of college student mental health and is closely linked to it. Additionally, parenting style is identified as an important factor influencing the development of college students' mental health. Therefore, this study aims to explore the relationship between these three factors.

Methods

A total of 8079 first-year college students from two medical universities in Shandong Province, China were surveyed. The Beck Depression Inventory was utilized to evaluate depressive symptoms among the college students, while the Adolescent Self-rating Life Events Checklist and the Egna Minnen Beträfande Uppfostran were employed to gather data. Subsequently, the SPSS macro program PROCESS was utilized to analyze both the mediating and moderating effects. All statistical analyses were conducted using SPSS 26.0.

Results

The study found a detection rate of 6.3% for depressive symptoms among college students. The correlation analysis of this study showed that the stressful life events of college students were significantly positively correlated with depressive symptoms (r=0.261, p< 0.01). Each dimension of parenting style was associated with depressive symptoms in different degrees and directions. At the same time, parenting styles of all sizes play a partial mediating role between stressful life events and depressive symptoms in college students, gender plays a crucial regulatory role in this mediation.

Conclusion

Stressful life events experienced by college students have a significant impact on their mental health. Early intervention through positive parenting styles from parents may prove to be beneficial in promoting the development of good mental health among college students.

Obesity and lipid indices as predictors of depressive symptoms in middle-aged and elderly Chinese: insights from a nationwide cohort study

BACKGROUND

Depressive symptoms are one of the most common psychiatric disorders, with a high lifetime prevalence rate among middle-aged and elderly Chinese. Obesity may be one of the risk factors for depressive symptoms, but there is currently no consensus on this view. Therefore, we investigate the relationship and predictive ability of 13 obesity- and lipid-related indices with depressive symptoms among middle-aged and elderly Chinese.

METHODS

The data were obtained from The China Health and Retirement Longitudinal Study (CHARLS). Our analysis includes individuals who did not have depressive symptoms at the baseline of the CHARLS Wave 2011 study and were successfully follow-up in 2013 and 2015. Finally, 3790 participants were included in the short-term (from 2011 to 2013), and 3660 participants were included in the long-term (from 2011 to 2015). The average age of participants in short-term and long-term was 58.47 years and 57.88 years. The anthropometric indicators used in this analysis included non-invasive [e.g. waist circumference (WC), body mass index (BMI), and a body mass index (ABSI)], and invasive anthropometric indicators [e.g. lipid accumulation product (LAP), triglyceride glucose index (TyG index), and its-related indices (e.g. TyG-BMI, and TyG-WC)]. Receiver operating characteristic (ROC) analysis was used to examine the predictive ability of various indicators for depressive symptoms. The association of depressive symptoms with various indicators was calculated using binary logistic regression.

RESULTS

The overall incidence of depressive symptoms was 20.79% in the short-term and 27.43% in the long-term. In males, WC [AUC = 0.452], LAP [AUC = 0.450], and TyG-WC [AUC = 0.451] were weak predictors of depressive symptoms during the short-term (P < 0.05). In females, BMI [AUC = 0.468], LAP [AUC = 0.468], and TyG index [AUC = 0.466] were weak predictors of depressive symptoms during the long-term (P < 0.05). However, ABSI cannot predict depressive symptoms in males and females during both periods (P > 0.05).

CONCLUSION

The research indicates that in the middle-aged and elderly Chinese, most obesity- and lipid-related indices have statistical significance in predicting depressive symptoms, but the accuracy of these indicators in prediction is relatively low and may not be practical predictors.

Prognostic Value of Depressive Symptoms for Cardiovascular Events in Female Patients With Heart Failure With Reduced Ejection Fraction and Heart Failure With Preserved Ejection Fraction

BACKGROUND

Among those with heart failure (HF), women are more likely to develop depression than men. Few studies have focused on the outcomes of female patients with HF with depressive symptoms.

METHODS AND RESULTS

A total of 506 female patients with HF with preserved ejection fraction were included in this secondary analysis from the TOPCAT (Treatment of Preserved Cardiac Function Heart Failure With an Aldosterone Antagonist) cohort, and 439 female patients with HF with reduced ejection fraction were included from the HF-ACTION (Heart Failure: A Controlled Trial Investigating Outcomes of Exercise Training) cohort. Depressive symptoms were measured using the Patient Health Questionnaire-9 and Beck Depression Inventory-II. The depression class was categorized by severity, and the change in clinical depression class was defined as aggravated (1-grade increase) or improved (1-grade decrease). The prognostic value of depressive symptoms was determined by using multivariable Cox proportional hazards models. Female patients with improved depressive symptoms had worse depressive status at baseline and lower baseline Kansas City Cardiomyopathy Questionnaire scores. Depression class at the 12-month visit and depression class change were the dominant prognostic factors for cardiovascular death in female patients with HF with preserved ejection fraction (hazard ratio [HR], 1.43 [95% CI, 1.02-2.01], P=0.036; HR, 1.71 [95% CI, 1.14-2.55], P=0.009). Among the patients with HF with reduced ejection fraction, both the depression class at baseline and depression class change had significant prognostic effects on cardiovascular death (HR, 3.30 [95% CI, 1.70-6.39], P<0.001; HR, 2.21 [95% CI, 1.28-3.80], P=0.004). However, the prognostic value of depressive assessments for hospitalization in patients with HF is unclear.

CONCLUSIONS

In female patients with HF with reduced ejection fraction, the depression class at baseline was most strongly associated with cardiovascular death, whereas in female patients with HF with preserved ejection fraction, the change in depression class exhibited a more significant prognostic trend.

Resting-state activity and functional connectivity of insula and postcentral gyrus related to psychological resilience in female depressed patients: A preliminary study

BACKGROUND

Psychological resilience is a protective factor of depression. However, the neuroimaging characteristics of the relationship between psychological resilience and brain imaging in depression are not very clear. Our objectives were to explore the brain functional imaging characteristics of different levels of resilience in female patients with depression.

METHODS

Resting-state functional magnetic resonance imaging (rs-fMRI) was performed on 58 female depressed patients. According to the resilience score, participants were divided into three groups: Low resilience (Low-res), Medium resilience (Med-res) and High resilience (High-res). We compared the differences in the amplitude of low-frequency fluctuations (ALFF) and functional connectivity (FC) among the three groups and correlated psychological resilience with ALFF and FC.

RESULTS

According to ALFF, there was a higher activation in RI and RPG in the High-res compared with Med-res and Low-res, but no significant differences between Med-res and Low-res. The FC between the RPG and supramarginal gyrus (SG) in the High-res was significantly stronger than that in the Med-res and the Low-res, and the FC of the Med-res is stronger than that of the Low-res. Both ALFF and FC were positively correlated with the score of resilience.

LIMITATIONS

The sample size of this study was relatively small and it lacked healthy controls. The results of this study could be considered preliminary.

CONCLUSIONS

Among female patients with depression, patients with higher psychological resilience had higher resting state activation in the RI and RPG and had a stronger interaction between the RPG and the SG.

Global, regional and national burdens of depression in adolescents and young adults aged 10-24 years, from 1990 to 2019: findings from the 2019 Global Burden of Disease study

BACKGROUND

Depression is a significant mental health concern affecting the overall well-being of adolescents and young adults. Recently, the prevalence of depression has increased among young people. Nonetheless, there is little research delving into the longitudinal epidemiology of adolescent depression over time.

AIMS

To investigate the longitudinal epidemiology of depression among adolescents and young adults aged 10-24 years.

METHOD

Our research focused on young people (aged 10-24 years) with depression, using data from the Global Burden of Diseases, Injuries, and Risk Factors Study 2019. We explored the age-standardised prevalence, incidence and disability-adjusted life-years (DALYs) of depression in different groups, including various regions, ages, genders and sociodemographic indices, from 1990 to 2019.

RESULTS

The prevalence, incidence and DALYs of depression in young people increased globally between 1990 and 2019. Regionally, higher-income regions like High-Income North America and Australasia recorded rising age-standardised prevalence and incidence rates, whereas low- or middle-income regions mostly saw reductions. Nationally, countries such as Greenland, the USA and Palestine reported the highest age-standardised prevalence and incidence rates in 2019, whereas Qatar witnessed the largest growth over time. The burden disproportionately affected females across age groups and world regions. The most prominent age effect on incidence and prevalence rates was in those aged 20-24 years. The depression burden showed an unfavourable trend in younger cohorts born after 1980, with females reporting a higher cohort risk than males.

CONCLUSIONS

Between 1990 and 2019, the general pattern of depression among adolescents varied according to age, gender, time period and generational cohort, across regions and nations.

Sex difference in association between suicide attempts and lipid profile in first-episode and drug naive patients with major depressive disorder

BACKGROUND

The relationship between suicide attempts and lipid profiles in patients with major depressive disorder (MDD) remains uncertain. The purpose of this study was to investigate sex differences in the relationship between suicide attempts and plasma lipid profiles in a large sample of first-episode and drug naive (FEDN) MDD patients.

METHODS

We recruited 1718 FEDN MDD patients and gathered demographic, clinical, and blood lipid data. The Hamilton Depression Rating Scale, Hamilton Anxiety Rating Scale and the Positive and Negative Syndrome Scale were used to assess the symptoms of patients.

RESULTS

There was no significant difference in the prevalence of suicide attempts between male and female MDD patients. The suicide attempt group had higher levels of depression, anxiety, psychotic symptoms, total cholesterol (TC), and low-density lipoprotein cholesterol (LDL-C), but lower levels of high-density lipoprotein cholesterol (HDL-C) levels than the non-suicide attempt group. Binary logistic regression showed that TC levels were significantly correlated with suicidal attempts in both male and female patients. Correlation analysis revealed that the levels of TC, HDL-C and LDL-C were significantly associated with the number of suicide attempts in both male and female patients. Further multiple linear regression revealed that TC levels were significantly associated with the number of suicide attempts in male patients only.

CONCLUSIONS

Lipid biomarkers, particularly high TC levels, are associated with suicide attempts in both male and female MDD patients. However, there is gender difference in association between lipid biomarkers, especially TC levels, and the number of suicide attempts in MDD patients.

Association between serum uric acid levels and depressive symptoms according to menopausal status

INTRODUCTION

The menopause-specific relationship between serum uric acid (SUA) and depressive symptoms were not known. We aimed to explore the association between SUA and depressive symptoms stratified by menopausal status.

METHODS

This is a cross-sectional study, a total of 4845 females were enrolled from China health and retirement longitudinal study (CHARLS) in China. The Center for Epidemiologic Studies Depression Scale (CESD) were used to measure depressive symptoms. A cut-off score of CES-D ≥ 10 was defined as depression. Multiple regression models were used to assess the relationship between SUA and depression stratified by menopausal status.

RESULTS

Overall, SUA was significantly associated with depressive symptoms/depression in post-menopause women (β = -0.39, 95 % CI: -0.60, -0.17) after adjusted potential confounders. Compared with those whose SUA levels were in the first tertile, participants with their SUA in the second (β = -0.76, 95 % CI: -1.30, -0.22) and third tertile (β = -1.24, 95 % CI: -1.80, -0.68) had milder depressive symptoms. However, SUA was not associated with depressive symptoms in pre-menopause women (β = 0.1, 95 % CI: -0.25, 0.46). An interaction between menopausal status and SUA on depressive symptoms were found in this study (P = 0.02). Similar results were found for depression.

LIMITATIONS

Some potential covariates like diet that could affect SUA levels were not considered in this study.

CONCLUSIONS

Higher SUA was associated with depressive symptoms/depression in post-menopause women. An interaction between menopausal status and SUA on depressive symptoms were found. SUA was not associated with depressive symptoms/depression in pre-menopause women.

Drug-induced depressive symptoms: An update through the WHO pharmacovigilance database

BACKGROUND

Depression is a highly incident condition and some drugs have been described as inducing or worsening depression. However, literature on this topic is rare and possibly outdated.

METHODS

We performed disproportionality analyses using VigiBase®, the largest pharmacovigilance database worldwide to identify drugs associated with depression. Then we excluded drugs already known as depressogenic according to American Summary of Product Characteristics (SPC). We then reviewed drug mechanism of action, scientific literature and European SPC for each drug identified to assess a level of plausibility. We measured Reporting Odds Ratio (ROR) statistically significant and superior to 1, suggesting a significant association between a drug and the reporting of depressive symptoms.

RESULTS

Out of the 5237 drugs extracted on VigiBase®, we have retained 89 new drugs associated with depression. More than half of drugs of interest are from nervous system. Opicapone (ROR: 20.66 95 %CI: 15.62-27.33), and gadoversetamide (ROR 18.62, 95 %CI 9.63-35.95) were the drugs with the highest ROR. Among the 89 drugs, 38 were considered already described such as suvorexant or ivacaftor, 20 likely associated such as anti-migraines drugs or new antipsychotic drugs and 31 potentially associated.

LIMITATIONS

Pharmacovigilance studies have many inherent limitations, such as under-reporting bias, notoriety effect and protopathic bias. These results are not intended to establish a causal link, only a statistical association.

CONCLUSION

We found a strong statistical signal and pharmacological plausibility for 58 new depressogenic drugs. This update list of suspected drugs may prove useful for doctors faced with potential cases of drug-induced depression or to stay aware in case. Other studies are needed to confirm the list.

Investigating the Role of 17β-Estradiol on the Serotonergic System, Targeting Soy Isoflavones as a Strategy to Reduce Menopausal Depression: A Mechanistic Review

Low serotonin is one factor implicated in the development of depression. 17β-estradiol (E2) has been shown to modulate gene expression regulating the neurotransmission of serotonin. Sex hormone levels fluctuate dramatically during the menopausal transition, coinciding with a 14-fold increased risk of depression. This review aimed to examine the effect of soy isoflavones to support decreased and variable E2 levels before and after menopause, linked to an investigation of the pathophysiological mechanisms underlying the protective influence of E2 on the serotonin pathway. The overall aim of this review is to assess the potential of soy isoflavones to reduce depression in middle-aged women. A systematic literature search was performed in three stages. 1,421 papers were screened for relevance to the research aims and objectives. 63 papers were selected based on pre-defined inclusion/exclusion criteria (13 reviews, 24 mechanistic and 26 intervention studies) and critically appraised. Available research supported the hypotheses that E2 increases serotonin synthesis and availability through stimulation of tryptophan hydroxylase-2 (TPH-2) and decreased degradation by monoamine oxidase-A (MAO-A). There was less scientific agreement on the effects of E2 on serotonin transporter (SERT) and serotonin receptors 1 A and 2 A. Studies varied widely on the effectiveness of soy isoflavones in reducing depressive symptoms in (peri)menopausal women. Animal and human studies acknowledge women's increased risk of depression linked to fluctuating E2 rather than absolute levels. However, mechanisms linking E2 variability with depression remain an underrepresented area of research. Study limitations and heterogeneity may contribute to varying results for soy isoflavones and some effects of E2 on the serotonin pathway.

Latent class analysis of symptoms of depression and anxiety among older women

OBJECTIVES

This cross-sectional study aims to consider the potential classification of depression and anxiety symptoms among older women, and identify the influencing factors of this classification.

METHODS

This study examines Chinese women aged 65 years and older. Latent class analysis was used to explore the mental health subgroups of older women, and multivariate logistic regression was employed to examine the influencing factors based on the health ecological model among these subgroups.

RESULTS

The results helped classify this population under three subgroups: the coexistence of depression and anxiety group, dominated depression group, and the low symptoms group. Moreover, class differences in terms of age, residence, education, income, assessment of current life and health status, sleep duration, and health behaviors, such as alcohol use and exercise were noted.

CONCLUSIONS

These findings explain the heterogeneity among older women, and help illuminate their unique aspects of mental health. Accordingly, they are significant for scholars and policymakers to understand depression and anxiety among older women.

Classification of high-risk depressed mood groups in cancer patients based on Health Ecology Model

BACKGROUND

Depressed mood affects a significant number of patients with cancer, and can impair their quality of life and interfere with successful treatment. Our study aims to create a predictive model for identifying high-risk groups of depressed mood in cancer patients, offering a theoretical support for preventing depressed mood in these individuals.

METHODS

The China Health and Retirement Longitudinal Study (CHARLS) provided the data for this research, which used CES-D as a tool to identify individuals with depressed mood. Influencing factors of depressed mood in cancer patients was analyzed using a binary logistic regression model. Using the Harvard Cancer Index, we classified the high-risk patients for depressed mood.

RESULTS

In present study, 52.96 % of cancer patients met criteria for depressed mood based on the CES-D. Significant correlations were found between depressed mood and factors such as gender, self-rated health, sleep duration, exercise, satisfaction with family, residence, education, life satisfaction, and medical insurance. Utilizing the Harvard Cancer Index, we classified patients into five risk levels for depressed mood, revealing a significant variation in the number of depressive patients across these levels (x2=99.82, P < 0.05). Notably, the incidence of depressed mood increased with the risk level among cancer patients (x2=103.40, P < 0.05).

LIMITATIONS

Lack of data on tumor typing and subgroups makes it unlikely to explore the specifics of depressed mood in patients with various types of cancer.

CONCLUSION

The determinants of depressed mood in cancer patients are multi-dimensional. The Harvard Cancer Index may be helpful in identifying high-risk populations.

Role of estrogen in treatment of female depression

Depression is a neurological disorder that profoundly affects human physical and mental health, resulting in various changes in the central nervous system. Despite several prominent hypotheses, such as the monoaminergic theory, hypothalamic-pituitary-adrenal (HPA) axis theory, neuroinflammation, and neuroplasticity, the current understanding of depression's pathogenesis remains incomplete. Importantly, depression is a gender-dimorphic disorder, with women exhibiting higher incidence rates than men. Given estrogen's pivotal role in the menstrual cycle, it is reasonable to postulate that its fluctuating levels could contribute to the pathogenesis of depression. Estrogen acts by binding to a diversity of receptors, which are widely distributed in the central nervous system. An abundance of research has established that estrogen and its receptors play a crucial role in depression, spanning pathogenesis and treatment. In this comprehensive review, we provide an in-depth analysis of the fundamental role of estrogen and its receptors in depression, with a focus on neuroinflammation, neuroendocrinology, and neuroplasticity. Furthermore, we discuss potential mechanisms underlying the therapeutic effects of estrogen in the treatment of depression, which may pave the way for new antidepressant drug development and alternative treatment options.

Quantile regression to explore association of sleep duration with depression among adults in NHANES and KNHANES

BACKGROUND

Sleep duration has been associated with depression. However, mean regression, such as linear regression or logistic regression, may not capture relationships that occur mainly in the tails of outcome distribution. This study aimed to evaluate the associations between sleep duration and depression along the entire distribution of depression using quantile regression approach.

METHODS

This study included 55,954 adults aged 18 to 80 years from the National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey (N = 34,156) and the Korea National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey (N = 21,798). The coefficients corresponding to cross-group differences in PHQ-9 scores were estimated when comparing short or long sleep duration with normal sleep duration on deciles of PHQ-9 score distribution.

RESULTS

At lower quantiles, either short or long sleep duration was not associated with depression. At higher quantiles, the association of both short and long sleep duration with depression became much more pronounced. Compared with normal sleep duration, short and long sleep duration were associated with increases of 1.34 (95 % CI: 1.16, 1.51) and 0.28 (95 % CI: 0.04, 0.52) in PHQ-9 scores at the 50th quantile, while the corresponding increases were 3.27 (95 % CI: 2.83, 3.72) and 1.65 (95 % CI: 0.86, 2.45) at the 90th quantile, respectively. We also found that the magnitude of association between short sleep duration and depression was stronger among females and individuals with chronic diseases.

CONCLUSIONS

The beneficial effect of sufficient sleep in decreasing depression severity may be more evident among individuals with severe depression. Further studies could explore whether these heterogeneous associations can be generalized to populations with different characteristics.

Global, regional, and national trends in incidence of depression among women, 1990-2019: An analysis of the global burden of disease study

Depression is a common mental disorder and more women are affected by depression than men. In this study, we aimed to analyze the trends in the incidence of depression among women from 1990 to 2019 and their associations with sociodemographic and universal health coverage indices based on data from the Global Burden of Disease study 2019. It was observed that while the incidence rate of depression among women decreased by an average of 0.35% per year at the global level, the incidence rate increased at the regional level for the high sociodemographic index region by an average of 0.39% per year from 1990 to 2019. And the global downward trend in incidence rate from 1990 to 2019 was contributed by the downward trend from 2000 to 2009. In Spearman correlation analyzes at the level of country/territory, a negative correlation between the estimated annual percentage change in the incidence rate and the universal health coverage index was found (ρ=-0.15).

Longitudinal relationships between self-compassion and depressive symptoms in midlife women

OBJECTIVE

Women in midlife face a range of biopsychosocial stressors that increase the risk of depression, with potential negative consequences in older adulthood. Lower self-compassion is known to predict subsequent depressive symptoms, but little is known about whether depressive symptoms predict subsequent levels of self-compassion. This study examined the longitudinal and reciprocal relationships between self-compassion and depressive symptoms over a 5-year period in midlife.

METHOD

This longitudinal study used data from 272 women aged 40-60 years at baseline. Cross-lagged panel analysis was used to investigate reciprocal relationships between depressive symptoms and self-compassion at baseline and 5-year follow-up.

RESULTS

After controlling for autoregressive effects, self-compassion at baseline explained 4% of unique variance in depressive symptoms 5 years later. Baseline depressive symptoms also predicted subsequent levels of self-compassion, with 2% of unique variance explained.

CONCLUSION

This is the first study to report a bidirectional longitudinal relationship between self-compassion and depressive symptoms. Midlife women may experience a negative cycle whereby low self-compassion and depressive symptoms reinforce each other through midlife and into older adulthood. Clinical trials examining self-compassion interventions in midlife are indicated.

Depression associated with dietary intake of flavonoids: An analysis of data from the National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey, 2007-2010

BACKGROUND

Flavonoids may have a protective effect against depression. The purpose of this study was to examine whether flavonoid intake was associated with depression.

METHODS

This is an observational cross-sectional study. We evaluated a sample of 8183 adults from the National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey (NHANES), 2007-2010. The participants had an average age of 46.7 years, and 48.4% of them were male. Flavonoid intake was obtained through dietary recall interviews, and it included six subclasses: isoflavones, anthocyanidins, flavan-3-ols, flavanones, flavones, and flavonols. Depression was identified using the Patient Health Questionnaire (PHQ-9). Logistic regression was utilized to evaluate the association between flavonoid intake and depression. Restricted cubic splines (RCS) were utilized to investigate nonlinear associations. Differences between subgroups were explored. Mediation analysis was used to explore confounding/mediating factors. These models were adjusted for age, sex, race/ethnicity, poverty status, education, smoking status, alcohol consumption, BMI, energy intake, physical activity, and chronic diseases.

RESULTS

There were 765 individuals with depression (PHQ-9 score ≥ 10) in the sample. After adjusting for covariates, flavanones, flavones, and total flavonoid intake were associated with a lower likelihood of depression (OR (95% CI): 0.73(0.64,0.84); 0.36(0.21,0.63); 0.86(0.74,0.99), respectively). A significant inverse correlation was observed between flavonoid consumption and the somatic symptom score of the PHQ-9. We observed a stronger association between flavonoids and depression in non-Hispanic white groups. The relationship between the total flavonoid intake and depression was explained to some extent by sleep duration (13.8%).

CONCLUSIONS

Flavonoid intake was associated with lower odds of depression.

Sex Differences in the Neurobiology of Stress

This review highlights the existing knowledge and data that explain the physiologic impacts of stress, especially pertaining to neurobiology, and how these impacts differ by sex. Furthermore, this review explains the benefits of interventions aimed at preventing or mitigating the adverse effects of stress, because of both the significant toll of stress on the body and the disproportionate impact of these changes experienced by women.

Prevalence and risk factors for depression and anxiety in patients with nasolacrimal duct obstruction

Objective

To investigate the prevalence and risk factors for depression and anxiety in patients with nasolacrimal duct obstruction (NLDO).

Methods

We conducted a telephone-based survey of patients with NLDO who underwent dacryocystorhinostomy (DCR) at the Department of Ophthalmology of Peking University Third Hospital in China between January 2016 and January 2021. Depression and anxiety were assessed with the PHQ-9 (range 0-25) and STAI (range 20-80) scales. PHQ-9 ≥ 5 and STAI ≥ 55 were considered clinically significant. Logistic regression and linear regression were performed to determine the factors related to depression and anxiety.

Results

Of 565 patients approached, 344 (60.9%) completed the survey. A total of 13.1% of patients had mild-severe depression and 63.4% had severe anxiety. Univariate logistic regression revealed that hypertension, dry eye, and cataract were associated with mild to severe depression (P = 0.018, 0.045, 0.035, respectively). Dry eye was associated with severe anxiety (P = 0.007). Univariate linear regression revealed that male and income levels were significantly negatively correlated with PHQ-9 scores (P = 0.011, 0.010, respectively). Hypertension and dry eye were significantly positively correlated with PHQ-9 scores (P = 0.030, P < 0.001, respectively). Male, income levels, and educational levels were significantly negatively correlated with STAI scores (P = 0.022, P < 0.001, P = 0.005, respectively). Dry eye was significantly positively correlated with STAI scores (P < 0.001).

Conclusion

Prevalence of depression and anxiety disorders was relatively high among NLDO patients. Our results demonstrate the importance of depression and anxiety screening and psychosocial support for patients with NLDO, which can improve their quality of life and compliance with medical appointments.

Immersive virtual reality as support for the mental health of elderly women: a randomized controlled trial

Several forms of virtual reality (VR) have shown promise in treating mental disorders. However, there is a lack of research investigating the use of multicomponent immersive VR. Therefore, this study aimed to evaluate the effectiveness of an immersive virtual reality (IVR) intervention that incorporated Japanese garden aesthetics, relaxation, and elements of Erickson's psychotherapy in alleviating depression and anxiety symptoms among elderly women. Sixty women with depressive symptoms were randomly assigned to one of two treatment groups. Both groups received eight (twice a week for four weeks) low-intensity general fitness training sessions. The IVR group (n = 30) received eight additional VR-based relaxation sessions, whereas the control group (n = 30) received eight group relaxation. As outcome measures, the geriatric depression scale (GDS; primary) and Hospital Anxiety and Depression Scale (HADS; secondary) were administered before and after the interventions. The protocol was registered in the ClinicalTrials.gov PRS database (Registration number: NCT05285501). Patients receiving IVR therapy exhibited a greater significant reduction in the GDS (adjusted mean post-difference of 4.10; 95% CI = 2.27-5.93) and HADS (2.95; 95% CI = 0.98-4.92) scores than those receiving the control intervention. In conclusion, IVR with elements of psychotherapy, relaxation, and garden aesthetics may alleviate the severity of depression and anxiety symptoms in elderly women.

Women's reproductive traits and major depressive disorder: A two-sample Mendelian randomization study

BACKGROUND

Evidence suggested strong associations between women's reproductive factors and major depressive disorder (MDD), but their causalities are unclear.

METHODS

Using female-specific SNPs as genetic instruments obtained from large-scale genome-wide association studies for women's reproductive traits, we designed two-sample univariable and multivariable Mendelian randomization (MR) analysis to evaluate the causal effects of women's reproductive traits on MDD. For both univariable MR (UVMR) and multivariable MR (MVMR), the inverse variance weighting estimates were reported as main results. MR-Egger, weighted median, and generalized summary-data-based MR (GSMR) methods for UVMR, and MVMR-Egger and MVMR-robust methods for MVMR were used as sensitivity analyses. Negative control analyses, MVMR of age at first birth (AFB) and age at first sexual intercourse (AFS) on MDD, and sex-combined genetic variants for AFB and AFS were performed to enhance the robustness of our study.

RESULTS

There was substantial evidence for associations of genetically predicted later age at menarche (AAM) (odds ratio (OR) = 0.97, 95 % confidence interval (CI) = 0.94-0.99, P = 0.007), AFB (OR = 0.91, 95 % CI = 0.86-0.97, P = 0.002) and AFS (OR = 0.70, 95 % CI = 0.60-0.80, P < 0.001) with lower MDD risk in UVMR. After adjustment of BMI and educational attainment using MVMR, we found consistently significant causal effects of AAM (OR = 0.95, 95 % CI = 0.92-0.99, P = 0.006), AFB (OR = 0.88, 95 % CI = 0.84-0.91, P < 0.001) and AFS (OR = 0.71, 95 % CI = 0.64-0.79, P < 0.001) on MDD.

CONCLUSIONS

Our results provide compelling evidence that early AAM, AFB, and AFS are risk factors for MDD. Promoting the cognition of reproductive health care for women may reduce the risk of MDD.

Associations between constipation, overeating, and depression: A survey of Chinese oldest-old and centenarians

Objectives

Depression is a common disease of elderly population, with a global prevalence of more than 20%. Few studies have involved the associations of constipation and overeating with depression, especially in the elderly population. We aimed to address these associations in Chinese oldest-old and centenarians.

Methods

A total of 1863 elderly individuals from 18 regions of Hainan, China, were investigated from July 2014 to December 2016. Health survey, physical examination, and blood analyses were performed through structured questionnaires and standard procedures. The Geriatric Depression Scale (GDS-15) was used to measure depression.

Results

The proportions of elderly individuals with depression, constipation, and overeating were 20.80% (349), 15.14% (254), and 26.52% (445), respectively. The prevalence of constipation and overeating was significantly higher in the elderly group with depression than in those without depression (P < 0.05, all). In the multiple linear regression analyses, higher prevalence of constipation and overeating had positive and significant associations with the GDS-15 (P < 0.05, all). In the multiple logistic regression analyses, constipation (odds ratio [OR]: 2.328; 95% confidence interval [CI]: 1.540-3.521) and overeating (OR: 2.735; 95% CI: 1.920-3.898) had positive and significant associations with depression (P < 0.05, in all).

Conclusions and Implications

This study provides epidemiological evidence that constipation and overeating have positive associations with depression in Chinese oldest-old and centenarians. The interventions for constipation and overeating should be improved to promote prevention and treatment for depression and achieve successful aging and healthy longevity.

Vasomotor symptoms of menopause, autonomic dysfunction, and cardiovascular disease

Cardiovascular disease (CVD), the leading cause of death among US adults, is more prevalent in menopausal females compared with age-matched males. Vasomotor symptoms of menopause (VMS; hot flashes/flushes and night sweats) are common among females undergoing menopausal transition and have been associated with elevated blood pressure (BP) and increased CVD risk. Autonomic dysregulation of BP has been posited as a contributing factor to the elevated CVD risk in menopausal females with VMS. This review includes 1) a brief overview of the relationship between VMS and CVD, 2) mechanisms of hot flushes and their potential impact on short- and long-term BP regulation, and 3) how the disruption of autonomic function associated with VMS might provide a mechanistic pathway to CVD development. Finally, this review will highlight knowledge gaps and future directions toward better understanding of hot flush physiology and VMS contributions to CVD.

Differences in psychosocial factors of mental health in an ethnically diverse Black adult population

We conducted a cross-sectional analysis in a convenient sample of Black adults in the United States (n = 269, ages 18-65) from diverse ethnic backgrounds (African-Americans, African immigrants, Afro-Caribbean immigrants). We examined mean differences in self-reported medical mistrust, use of mental health services, depression symptom severity, mental health knowledge and stigma behavior (or a desire for separation away from people living with a mental illness) according to ethnicity, citizenship status, age group, and gender. African Americans with moderate to severe depression symptoms had greater stigma behavior (mean = 12.2, SD = 3.2) than African Americans who screened in the minimal to mild depression range (mean = 13.1, SD = 3.5). Across the spectrum of depression, immigrants showed greater stigma than African Americans (p = 0.037). This is a pilot study that explores heterogeneity in the Black population in depression symptom severity and psychosocial factors related to mental health. Understanding these differences may contribute to how we approach needs and health system practices and policies at the individual, systemic, and structural level of mental health care.

Associations of dietary Provitamin A carotenoid intake with depressive symptoms in midlife women: Results from the study of Women's Health Across the Nation

BACKGROUND

To study the association of Provitamin A (pro-A) carotenoid intake from diet with depressive symptoms in midlife women.

METHODS

Data for this cross-sectional study were retrieved from baseline assessment of the Study of Women's Health Across the Nation (SWAN). Logistic regression and restricted cubic spline models were performed to examine the association pro-A carotenoid intake with depressive symptoms.

RESULTS

A total of 3054 midlife women aged 42-52 years were included in the present study. In overall midlife women, pro-A carotenoid intake was inversely associated with depressive symptoms (CES-D score ≥16). In premenopausal women, pro-A carotenoid intake was inversely associated with depressive symptoms after adjustment for age, race/ethnicity, total family income, education, physical activity, BMI, use of antidepressant, dietary total caloric, protein, carbohydrate, fat, vitamin C, vitamin E and pro-A carotenes in model 1. In fully adjusted model, after additional adjustment for day of cycle, FSH and SHBG, this association remained statistically significant. The fully adjusted odds ratios (ORs) with 95 % CI of depressive symptoms were 0.685 (0.450-1.043) in quartile 4 compared with quartile 1 for pro-A carotenoid intake. However, in early perimenopausal women, no statistically significant difference was observed between pro-A carotenoid intake and depressive symptoms after adjustment for confounders.

LIMITATIONS

This was a cross-sectional study, limiting causal inferences. Assessment of CES-D was based on a self-report scale.

CONCLUSION

Pro-A carotenoid intake may be inversely associated with depression symptoms in premenopausal women, but not in early perimenopausal women.

Factors Influencing Depressive Symptoms in Middle-Aged South Korean Workers by Job Type: A Population-Based Study

Depressive symptoms can be influenced by different factors, including job types. In this study, we identified factors that affect depressive symptoms among South Korean workers by job type using data from the Korea National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey. Examined respondents were between 40 and 69 years (N = 9375). A complex sample linear regression analysis revealed various significant factors based on job type. For office workers, the number of household members, health-related quality of life, diabetes, sitting time, subjective health, and stress were significant influencing factors for depressive symptoms (explanatory power of 23.2%) (p < 0.001). For service workers, gender, health-related quality of life, food intake, aerobic exercise, sitting time, subjective health, and stress were significant influencing factors for depressive symptoms (explanatory power of 49.6%) (p < 0.001). For labor workers, gender, type of living, health-related quality of life, BMI, weight change, weight control, aerobic exercise, diabetes, subjective health, and stress were significant influencing factors for depressive symptoms (explanatory power of 35.8%) (p < 0.001). These differences highlight the need for customized programs targeted at each job type to maintain and promote mental health among workers.

Association of indoor noise level with depression in hotel workers: A multicenter study from 111 China's cities

Several studies have elucidated the link between outdoor noise and depression, but the relationship between indoor noise levels and depression symptoms in residential and public places remains unclear. This study was a multicenter observational study with a cross-sectional design. In 2019, a total of 10 545 indoor noise levels on-site and 26 018 health data from practitioners were collected from 2402 hotels in 111 cities. Indoor daily noise data levels were detected, and PHQ-9 questionnaires were used to collect health data. Logistic analysis was used to determine the association between depression score and noise level, negative binomial regression was used to determine potential risks. The geometric mean indoor noise level was 38.9 dB (A), with approximately 40.9% of hotels exceeding the 45 dB value (A). Approximately 19.1% of hotel workers exhibited mild and above depressive symptoms. In addition to functional zoning, geographic location, central air conditioner, decoration status, and other factors had an impact on noise levels (p < 0.05). Results of logistic and negative binomial regression showed the following: (1) there was significantly positive association between indoor noise and high depression scores above 2 (OR = 1.007, 95% CI: 1.002, 1.012) and (2) some sub-groups were more susceptible to this effect, especially for the younger female workers working in the first-tier cities, having higher education level, lower level of income, smoking, and longer working hours. This study confirms an early potential effect of indoor noise on depression. It is recommended to implement evidence-based measures to control noise sources in hotels.

Sex differences in peripheral monoamine transmitter and related hormone levels in chronic stress mice with a depression-like phenotype

Backgrounds

Chronic stress could induce depression-like phenotype in animal models. Previous data showed that sex differences exist after chronic stress model establishment, however, the detailed information about the difference of blood biochemical indexes is not clear. In this study, we aim to supply comparison of monoamine transmitters and related hormone markers in serum between male and female depressed mice, and in order to better understand the sex difference in transmitters and hormone levels in depression occurrence and development.

Methods

Sixty C57BL/6 mice (both male and female) were divided into two groups by gender. Same gender mice were then divided randomly into the non-treated control group and chronic stress group which was exposed to 8 weeks of chronic unpredictable mild stress (CUMS). Depression-like behavior was assessed with open-field test and sucrose preference test. Blood sample was collected and monoamine transmitter and related hormone in serum were measured by ELISA.

Results

The depression-like phenotype mice model was established successfully after 8 weeks of chronic stress. The locomotion activity scores in male stressed mice declined more than that in female stressed mice, while the exploratory behavior scores in female stressed mice declined more than that in male stressed mice. Compared to non-treated control group mice, mice in the chronic stress group in response to stress showed greater declines in monoamine transmitters (5-HT, dopamine, norepinephrine) and sex hormones (androgen, estrogen, oxytocin and prolactin), while stress hormones (adrenaline, corticosterone and ACTH) were significantly increased. The decrease of norepinephrine, androgen and estrogen in female stressed mice was greater than in male stressed mice, whereas the 5-HT and oxytocin in male stressed mice decreased more than in female stressed mice, and the corticosterone in male stressed mice increased more than in female stressed mice.

Conclusion

Sex differences of monoamine transmitter and related hormone levels in serum occurred in chronic stress induced depression-like phenotype mice model. It may provide a useful reference to guide precise antidepressant treatment in different gender population in clinical care.

Changes in Life Circumstances and Mental Health Symptoms during the COVID-19 Pandemic among Midlife Women with Elevated Risk for Cardiovascular Disease

Cardiovascular disease (CVD) remains the leading cause of death among women. During midlife (ages 40-60), universal aging processes, sex-specific factors such as menopause, psychological distress, and conditions such as hypertension substantially increase women's risk for CVD. The onset of the COVID-19 pandemic has impacted employment, social interactions, caregiving responsibilities, and overall well-being worldwide; however, little research has investigated how COVID-19 has affected women in midlife. The present study was designed to determine how COVID-19 has affected women in midlife with elevated risk for CVD, by examining changes in their mental health symptoms and life domains across three time points: prior to COVID-19 (2019), during stay-at-home orders (April-June 2020), and during initial reopening (August 2020). Women in midlife with one or more CVD risk conditions (e.g., hypertension; n = 35) responded to questions related to COVID-19, changes in life circumstances, and mental health symptoms at each time point. Findings showed meaningful changes in caregiving, medical visits, and employment status, as well as significant changes in depression and sleep quality scores across time. However, the findings also showed that women were distressed prior to COVID-19 and did not exhibit changes in perceived stress, body dissatisfaction, or anxiety symptoms over time. Findings from this study highlight the impact of the COVID-19 pandemic on an at-risk group of women, which may be used to help guide future health promotion efforts specifically tailored to this population.

Association Between Polymorphisms in Estrogen Receptor Genes and Depression in Women: A Meta-Analysis

Objective: It is suggested that estrogen receptors (ERs) might be associated with the disproportionate vulnerability of women to depressive episodes. Several variants in ER-alpha (ERα) and ER-beta (ERβ) have been linked to depression, but the results were not consistent. Hence, we conducted a meta-analysis to evaluate the association between ERα/ERβ and depression in a cohort of women.

Methods: A comprehensive literature search was performed in public databases. The genetic association between polymorphisms in Erα/ERβ and depression risk in a cohort of women was evaluated by odds ratios (ORs) and 95% confidence intervals (CIs). Cochran’s Q test and the I² index were used to evaluate heterogeneity.

Results: In total, 10 studies and 4 SNPs (rs2234693, rs9340799, rs4986938, rs1256049) were included in our meta-analysis. rs2234693 genotype was significantly associated with the risk of depression in women by dominant model (CC + CT vs TT, OR = 1.30, 95% CI: 1.09–1.55, p = 0.0031), recessive model (CC vs CT + TT, OR = 1.64, 95% CI: 1.00–2.67, p = 0.0478), additive model (CC vs TT, OR = 1.93, 95% CI: 1.12–3.35, p = 0.0189) and allelic model (C vs T, OR = 1.24, 95% CI: 1.10–1.39, p = 0.0003). For rs9340799, the frequencies of risk genotypes according to the dominant (GG + GA vs AA, OR = 1.47, 95% CI = 1.10–1.98, p = 0.0096, I² = 0%, p = 0.43) and allelic (G vs A, OR = 1.33, 95% CI: 1.04–1.69, p = 0.0236, I² = 0%, p = 0.39) models were significantly lower in women with depression than in controls within the Asian subgroup. For rs1256049, risk genotypes were significantly more frequent in depressed subjects than in controls under the dominant model (AA+ GA vs GG, OR = 1.62, 95% CI: 1.19–2.21, p = 0.0024) and the allelic model (A vs G, OR = 1.35, 95% CI: 1.07–1.72, p = 0.012) after sensitivity analysis by omitting one study which induce the heterogeneity.

Conclusions: The current meta-analysis is the first and most comprehensive investigation of the association between ERs and depression in women, and the findings support the concept that ERs participate in the etiology of sex heterogeneity in depression.

Distinct proteomic profiles in prefrontal subareas of elderly major depressive disorder and bipolar disorder patients

We investigated for the first time the proteomic profiles both in the dorsolateral prefrontal cortex (DLPFC) and anterior cingulate cortex (ACC) of major depressive disorder (MDD) and bipolar disorder (BD) patients. Cryostat sections of DLPFC and ACC of MDD and BD patients with their respective well-matched controls were used for study. Proteins were quantified by tandem mass tag and high-performance liquid chromatography-mass spectrometry system. Gene Ontology terms and functional cluster alteration were analyzed through bioinformatic analysis. Over 3000 proteins were accurately quantified, with more than 100 protein expressions identified as significantly changed in these two brain areas of MDD and BD patients as compared to their respective controls. These include OGDH, SDHA and COX5B in the DLPFC in MDD patients; PFN1, HSP90AA1 and PDCD6IP in the ACC of MDD patients; DBN1, DBNL and MYH9 in the DLPFC in BD patients. Impressively, depending on brain area and distinct diseases, the most notable change we found in the DLPFC of MDD was 'suppressed energy metabolism'; in the ACC of MDD it was 'suppressed tissue remodeling and suppressed immune response'; and in the DLPFC of BD it was differentiated 'suppressed tissue remodeling and suppressed neuronal projection'. In summary, there are distinct proteomic changes in different brain areas of the same mood disorder, and in the same brain area between MDD and BD patients, which strengthens the distinct pathogeneses and thus treatment targets.

Selection of the Male or Female Sex in Chronic Unpredictable Mild Stress-Induced Animal Models of Depression

Depression is a serious public health problem and an important factor leading to disease-related disability. Influenced by many factors, such as psychological, hormonal, and genetic factors, the incidence rate of depression in females is approximately two times that in males. However, in preclinical neuroscience research, the selection of the animals' sex for use in depression models has been controversial. At present, in most preclinical studies, the animals generally chosen in depression models have been male rodents rather than female rodents. It remains doubtful whether the data obtained from male animals can be generalized to female animals. The performance of female animals in preclinical studies of depression has been inconclusive. Based on a review of a large number of original studies in the PubMed database, it was found that although male rodents are more commonly used in the study of depression, the use of female animals also shows good modeling of depression and has its advantages. The influence of the animals' sex in the chronic unpredictable mild stress (CUMS) model needs further research.

Menopause and work: A narrative literature review about menopause, work and health

BACKGROUND:

Menopause is part of working women’s lives. In Western countries, labour market patterns are changing rapidly: women’s labour participation has increased, the percentage of full-time working women is rising, and retirement age is increasing.

OBJECTIVE:

This narrative literature study aims to provide an insight in the state of the art in the literature about the relationship between menopause, work and health and to identify knowledge gaps as input for further research.

METHODS:

The search was conducted in PubMed, CINAHL, MEDLINE and ScienceDirect. The final set includes 36 academic articles, 27 additional articles related to the topic and 6 additional sources.

RESULTS:

Research on menopause, work and health is scarce. Results are grouped thematically as follows: Menopause and (1) a lack of recognising; (2) sickness absence and costs; (3) work ability; (4) job characteristics; (5) psychosocial and cultural factors; (6) health; (7) mental health, and (8) coping and interventions. Work ability of women with severe menopausal complaints may be negatively affected.

CONCLUSIONS:

Due to taboo, menopause remains unrecognised and unaddressed within an organisational context. New theoretical and methodological approaches towards research on menopause, work and health are required in order to match the variety of the work contexts world-wide.

The impact of obesity-related neuroinflammation on postpartum depression: A narrative review

Obesity is currently one of the most serious health problems, affecting 13% of the world's adult population. Obesity is characterized by persistent low-grade chronic inflammation that assumes systemic proportions and triggers several associated metabolic diseases. Furthermore, obesity has been associated with an increased occurrence of central disorders such as impaired cognitive function, reward system dysfunction, and depression. In summary, there is a quantitative reduction in the release of neurotransmitters in depression. Postsynaptic cells capture lower concentrations of neurotransmitters, which leads to a functional reduction in the central nervous system (CNS). Globally, approximately 15-65% of women experience depressive symptoms during pregnancy, depending on their location. Depressive symptoms persist in some women, leading to postpartum depression (PPD). Thus, obesity may be considered a risk factor for PPD development. This study aimed to synthesize studies on the impact of obesity-related neuroinflammation and PPD. We conducted a narrative review of the relevant literature. The search was performed in electronic databases, specifically PubMed, selecting articles in English published from 2014 to 2021 using the narrative review methodology.

An assessment of sensory sensitivity in women suffering from depression using transcutaneous electrical nerve stimulation

Background

Perception is the process or result of the process arising from the mental interpretation of the phenomena occurring, therefore it depends not only on physiology, but is also psychologically and socially conditioned. The aim of this study was to assess if there is a difference in the sensory sensitivity to an electrical stimulus in women suffering from depression and what the hedonic rating is of the lived experience of transcutaneous electrical nerve stimulation.

Methods

The depression group: 44 women, who were inpatients treated for depression at the Psychiatric Ward in the Clinical Hospital, and the control group: 41 women, matched by the age, height and weight, with no mental illness. Measures: threshold for sensing current, type of sensation evoked, hedonic rating.

Results

Median sensing threshold of electric current (depression vs. control: 7.75 mA vs. 8.35 mA; no significant), type of sensation evoked (depression vs. control: tingling 90.9% vs. 92.7%, no significant), hedonic rating (depression vs. control: unpleasant 11.4% vs. 2.4%; p = 0.003), hedonic rating (mildly ill vs. moderately ill vs. markedly ill: unpleasant 5.3% vs. 6.3% vs. 33.3%; p = 0.066).

Conclusions

Women suffering from depression exhibit a similar threshold of sensitivity to an electrical stimulus as mentally healthy women, however the hedonic rating of the stimulus acting on the skin in the group of clinically depressed women was more negative than in the mentally healthy subjects. The stimulus was described as 'unpleasant' for many of the mentally unhealthy women. The most negative sensations related to the electrical stimulus were experienced by women with the highest severity of mental illness according to The Clinical Global Impression - Severity Scale.

Visual impairment and depression in China: a 7-year follow-up study from national longitudinal surveys

OBJECTIVES

To explore the longitudinal association between visual impairment (VI) and depression among adults 45 years and older in China based on a nationally representative follow-up dataset.

SETTING

Participants in China from the China Health and Retirement Longitudinal Study were included.

PARTICIPANTS

A total of 6748 participants from two waves of the China Health and Retirement Longitudinal Study 2011-2018 were included for analysis by age group.

PRIMARY AND SECONDARY OUTCOME MEASURES

VI and depression were defined by self-diagnosis and the Center for Epidemiological Studies Depression Scale-10, respectively. Lagged dependent variable regression models with ordinary least squares estimation were used to evaluate the association between VI and depression. Age was divided into three groups, that is, 45-54, 55-64, and 65 years and older, to explore the relationship between VI and depression in different age groups.

RESULTS

In our study sample, VI remarkably predicted an increase in depressive scores. The magnitude of depressive scores increased among those with VI points greater than 3.517 (β=3.517; 95% CI=2.697 to 4.331) points than those without VI in the 7-year follow-up. Significant relationships were also found between VI and depression in the three age groups in the sensitivity analysis.

CONCLUSION

VI was associated with an increase in depression scores over a 7-year period. Female respondents, low educational attainment and high alcohol intake significantly predicted an increase in depressive status.

Suicide among physicians: Major risk for women physicians

INTRODUCTION

The risk of suicide is related to professional activity. Preliminary data suggest that being in the medical profession increases the risk of suicide in women. The objective of this nationwide study is to compare the death rate of physicians due to suicide with that of the general population and to assess the differences based on gender.

MATERIALS AND METHODS

All physicians and the general population who died by suicide in Spain between 2005 and 2014, both inclusive, were studied. Between these years, the Spanish population grew from 43,662,613 to 46,455,123 persons and from 199,123 to 238,240 number of doctors. The data relating to the deaths of physicians were extracted from the databases of the General Council of Official Medical Associations (CGCOM) and data related to the general population were obtained from the National Institute of Statistics (INE). The variables included in the analyses are gender, age, specialty, place of residence and death, and causes of death according to the ICD-10.

RESULTS

The annual mean of physician deaths was 918, with an annual crude rate of 4.8 per 1,000 registered physicians. It is confirmed that physicians have a significantly higher suicide rate (average of 1.3%) than the general population (average of 0.8%) (p = 0.003). The comparison of suicide between men and women doctors is significantly higher in women (X2= 53.068, p<0.001). In addition, if we separate by gender, female physicians have a suicide rate 7.5% higher than women from the general population, although the difference is not significant (X2 = 2.614, p = 0.107).

CONCLUSIONS

. Suicide is higher among physicians than the general population and affects female physicians significantly more.

Elevated risk of mood disorders after the occurrence of recurrent retinal detachment: a population-based cohort study

INTRODUCTION

To investigate the risk of mood disorders in patients who experienced retinal detachment (RD) by using the National Health Insurance Research Database in Taiwan.

METHODS

Participants with a diagnosis of RD were regarded as the study group, and an age- and sex-matched group without a diagnosis of RD served as the control group. The outcomes related to mood disorders after RD included (1) psychiatric outpatient department visits; (2) behavioural therapy; (3) sleep or anxiety-related disorders; and (4) major depressive disorder (MDD).

RESULTS

A total of 4,129 participants diagnosed with RD and 16,516 non-RD individuals were enrolled in the study. There were no significant differences in the four mood disorder-related outcomes between the study and control groups. However, the patients with recurrent RD who received more than two treatments and female patients with RD who needed surgical treatment showed a higher probability of developing MDD than did the non-RD subjects (incidence rate: 0.96 versus 0.36; adjusted hazard ratio (aHR): 2.382, 95% CI: 1.032-5.496, log-rank P= 0.0325; and aHR: 6.895, 95% CI: 1.659-28.656, log-rank P= 0.0060, respectively).

CONCLUSION

Patients with recurrent RD and multiple surgeries and females with RD who needed surgical treatment were at greater risk for developing MDD.

Effects of chronic folate deficiency and sex differences on depression‑like behavior in mice

Although previous studies have reported that serum folate levels are negatively associated with depression in women but not men, it remains unclear whether folate deficiency can directly lead to depression and whether sex difference serves a role in this condition, since the potential mechanism remains elusive. Therefore, the present study aimed to investigate whether folate deficiency results in differences in parameters associated with depression between males and females. CD-1 mice received either a standard control diet or a folate-deficient diet from 10 to 38 weeks of age, following which behavioral assays, such as an open field test, sucrose preference test and forced swim test were performed throughout week 38. Serum and cerebral cortex samples were subsequently collected for assessment. Serum folate, homocysteine, estradiol (E2) and testosterone levels were measured using chemiluminescence, enzymatic cycling assay and electrochemiluminescence immunoassays. The cerebral cortex was used for western blot analysis, to detect the expression levels of estrogen receptor β (ERβ), PI3K/AKT pathway and caspase-3. The results revealed that compared with those in female mice that received standard control diet, female mice that received folate-deficient diet exhibited lower E2 concentrations, lower sucrose preferences (as determined through the sucrose preference test), longer durations of immobility (as determined in the forced swim test) and less time spent in the central areas of the open field test. Western blotting demonstrated that the expression levels of ERβ and the phosphorylation levels of PI3K and AKT were decreased, whilst the expression levels of cleaved caspase-3 were increased, in the cerebral cortex of female mice that received folate-deficient diet. However, no differences in E2 concentration, behavioral assay parameters or protein levels of ERβ, phosphorylated (p-)PI3K, p-AKT and cleaved caspase-3 could be observed in male mice regardless of whether they received standard control or folate-deficient diets. Collectively, these results revealed that folate deficiency only led to depression-like behavior in female mice. This may be associated with reduced E2 levels, which may inhibit the PI3K/AKT pathway and upregulate the expression of cleaved caspase-3 to promote neuronal apoptosis.

Global hotspots and prospects of perimenopausal depression: A bibliometric analysis via CiteSpace

BACKGROUND

Perimenopausal depression (PMD) is characterized by affective symptoms as well as menopause-specific somatic complaints and has attracted increasing attention over the past few decades. Using a bibliometric tool, this study aims to evaluate the origin, current hotspots, and research trends on PMD.

METHODS

Articles with research on PMD were retrieved from Web of Science Core Collection (WoSCC). We used the bibliometric method to analyze publication years, journals, countries, institutions, authors, research hotspots, and trends. We plotted the reference co-citation network and used keywords to analyze the research hotspots and trends.

RESULTS

A total of 209 publications related to PMD were identified from WoSCC on May 8, 2022. The number of publications concerning PMD every year shows an upward trend. Further analysis indicated that 209 articles were contributed by 45 countries, 288 institutions, and 501 authors. The United States contributed the most significant number of publications, followed by China. Harvard University is the core institution of PMD research, and Cohen's work has had an important impact on another research. The occurrence and pathological mechanisms of depression during the menopausal transition from the knowledge base of PMD. All of them belong to the category of gynecology and psychosis, which reflects the focus of the research topics. Major depression, postmenopausal women, symptoms like hot flashes, and prevalence and risk factors are research hotspots in the PMD field. The frontiers in PMD field that will impact future research are anxiety, meta-analysis, association, and Beck Depression Inventory-II (BDI-II).

CONCLUSION

These findings provide us with the core countries, institutions, and authors in PMD research and point out the direction of attention in this field. The current research focuses on depression, postmenopausal women, hot flashes, and other symptoms, as well as the prevalence and risk factors. The frontiers will be anxiety, meta-analysis, related factors, and depression assessment in future research.
