Effects of hexagonal boron nitride nanoparticles on antimicrobial and antibiofilm activities, cell viability

Hazard assessment of hexagonal boron nitride and hexagonal boron nitride reinforced thermoplastic polyurethane composites using human skin and lung cells

Hexagonal boron nitride (hBN) is an emerging two-dimensional material attracting considerable attention in the industrial sector given its innovative physicochemical properties. Potential risks are associated mainly with occupational exposure where inhalation and skin contact are the most relevant exposure routes for workers. Here we aimed at characterizing the effects induced by composites of thermoplastic polyurethane (TPU) and hBN, using immortalized HaCaT skin keratinocytes and BEAS-2B bronchial epithelial cells. The composite was abraded using a Taber® rotary abraser and abraded TPU and TPU-hBN were also subjected to photo-Fenton-mediated degradation mimicking potential weathering across the product life cycle. Cells were exposed to the materials for 24 h (acute exposure) or twice per week for 4 weeks (chronic exposure) and evaluated with respect to material internalization, cytotoxicity, and proinflammatory cytokine secretion. Additionally, comprehensive mass spectrometry-based proteomics and metabolomics (secretomics) analyses were performed. Overall, despite evidence of cellular uptake of the material, no significant cellular and/or protein expression profiles alterations were observed after acute or chronic exposure of HaCaT or BEAS-2B cells, identifying only few pro-inflammatory proteins. Similar results were obtained for the degraded materials. These results support the determination of hazard profiles associated with cutaneous and pulmonary hBN-reinforced polymer composites exposure.

Nanoformulations for dismantling fungal biofilms: The latest arsenals of antifungal therapy

Globally, fungal infections have evolved as a strenuous challenge for clinicians, particularly in patients with compromised immunity in intensive care units. Fungal co-infection in Covid-19 patients has made the situation more formidable for healthcare practitioners. Surface adhered fungal population known as biofilm often develop at the diseased site to elicit antifungal tolerance and recalcitrant traits. Thus, an innovative strategy is required to impede/eradicate developed biofilm and avoid the formation of new colonies. The development of nanocomposite-based antibiofilm solutions is the most appropriate way to withstand and dismantle biofilm structures. Nanocomposites can be utilized as a drug delivery medium and for fabrication of anti-biofilm surfaces capable to resist fungal colonization. In this context, the present review comprehensively described different forms of nanocomposites and mode of their action against fungal biofilms. Amongst various nanocomposites, efficacy of metal/organic nanoparticles and nanofibers are particularly emphasized to highlight their role in the pursuit of antibiofilm strategies. Further, the inevitable concern of nanotoxicology has also been introduced and discussed with the exigent need of addressing it while developing nano-based therapies. Further, a list of FDA-approved nano-based antifungal formulations for therapeutic usage available to date has been described. Collectively, the review highlights the potential, scope, and future of nanocomposite-based antibiofilm therapeutics to address the fungal biofilm management issue.

2D materials for Tribo-corrosion and -oxidation protection: A review

The recent rise of 2D materials has extended the opportunities of tuning a variety of properties. Tribo-corrosion, the complex synergy between mechanical wear and chemical corrosion, poses significant challenges across numerous industries where materials are subjected to both tribological stressing and corrosive environments. This intricate interplay often leads to accelerated material degradation and failure. This review critically assesses the current state of utilizing 2D nanomaterials to enhance tribo-corrosion and -oxidation behavior. The paper summarizes the fundamental knowledge about tribo-corrosion and -oxidation mechanisms before assessing the key contributions of 2D materials, including graphene, transition metal chalcogenides, hexagonal boron nitride, MXenes, and black phosphorous, regarding the resulting friction and wear behavior. The protective roles of these nanomaterials against corrosion and oxidation are investigated, highlighting their potential in mitigating material degradation. Furthermore, we delve into the nuanced interplay between mechanical and corrosive factors in the specific application of 2D materials for tribo-corrosion and -oxidation protection. The synthesis of key findings underscores the advancements achieved through integrating 2D nanomaterials. An outlook for future research directions is provided, identifying unexplored avenues, and proposing strategies to propel the field forward. This analysis aims at guiding future investigations and developments at the dynamic intersection of 2D nanomaterials, tribo-corrosion, and -oxidation protection.

Emerging 2D Nanomaterials-Integrated Hydrogels: Advancements in Designing Theragenerative Materials for Bone Regeneration and Disease Therapy

This review highlights recent advancements in the synthesis, processing, properties, and applications of 2D-material integrated hydrogels, with a focus on their performance in bone-related applications. Various synthesis methods and types of 2D nanomaterials, including graphene, graphene oxide, transition metal dichalcogenides, black phosphorus, and MXene are discussed, along with strategies for their incorporation into hydrogel matrices. These composite hydrogels exhibit tunable mechanical properties, high surface area, strong near-infrared (NIR) photon absorption and controlled release capabilities, making them suitable for a range of regeneration and therapeutic applications. In cancer therapy, 2D-material-based hydrogels show promise for photothermal and photodynamic therapies, and drug delivery (chemotherapy). The photothermal properties of these materials enable selective tumor ablation upon NIR irradiation, while their high drug-loading capacity facilitates targeted and controlled release of chemotherapeutic agents. Additionally, 2D-materials -infused hydrogels exhibit potent antibacterial activity, making them effective against multidrug-resistant infections and disruption of biofilm generated on implant surface. Moreover, their synergistic therapy approach combines multiple treatment modalities such as photothermal, chemo, and immunotherapy to enhance therapeutic outcomes. In bio-imaging, these materials serve as versatile contrast agents and imaging probes, enabling their real-time monitoring during tumor imaging. Furthermore, in bone regeneration, most 2D-materials incorporated hydrogels promote osteogenesis and tissue regeneration, offering potential solutions for bone defects repair. Overall, the integration of 2D materials into hydrogels presents a promising platform for developing multifunctional theragenerative biomaterials.

Environmental and Health Impacts of Graphene and Other Two-Dimensional Materials: A Graphene Flagship Perspective

Two-dimensional (2D) materials have attracted tremendous interest ever since the isolation of atomically thin sheets of graphene in 2004 due to the specific and versatile properties of these materials. However, the increasing production and use of 2D materials necessitate a thorough evaluation of the potential impact on human health and the environment. Furthermore, harmonized test protocols are needed with which to assess the safety of 2D materials. The Graphene Flagship project (2013-2023), funded by the European Commission, addressed the identification of the possible hazard of graphene-based materials as well as emerging 2D materials including transition metal dichalcogenides, hexagonal boron nitride, and others. Additionally, so-called green chemistry approaches were explored to achieve the goal of a safe and sustainable production and use of this fascinating family of nanomaterials. The present review provides a compact survey of the findings and the lessons learned in the Graphene Flagship.

Boron Nitride's Morphological Role in the Design of Injectable Hyaluronic Acid Based Hybrid Artificial Synovial Fluid

The treatment process of osteoarthritis (OA) is challenging as it affects not only cartilage but also subchondral bone, ligament attachment capsules, synovium, and surrounding muscle tissue. Therefore, the search for preventive treatment or methods to slow the onset of the condition. Hexagonal boron nitride (hBN) has a graphite-like lamellar structure and is thought to facilitate cartilage movement for biomedical applications, just like in bearing systems. Hyaluronic acid (HA) is one of the natural polymers that can be used to transport boron nitride and maintain its presence in joints for a long time. In this study, hybrid hydrogels were formulated by using boron nitride nanoparticles and nanosheets. The rheological properties of the hydrogels were evaluated according to the structural differences of hBN. Characterizations have shown that hybrid hydrogels can be produced in injectable form, and the rheological properties are strongly related to the structural properties of the added particle. It has been determined that hBN added to the hydrogel structure reduces the dynamic viscosity of the zero-shear point and the deformation rate of the hydrogel and also changes the viscoelastic properties of the hydrogel depending on boron nitride's structural differences. The suggested mechanism is the hybrid hydrogel that exhibits lower viscosity as the layers detach from each other or disperses the agglomerates under applied shear stress. hBN, which has been proposed as a new strategy for joint injections, is thought to be a promising candidate for the treatment of OA due to its lamellar structures.

Effect of Boron on Sympathetic Skin Response in Rats

Background

Boron effects on reproduction and growth have been extensively studied in animals. Electrodermal activity (EDA) reflects the activity of eccrine sweat glands stimulated by the release of acetylcholine from sympathetic nerves.

Aim

In the presen study, it was aimed to examine the effect of boron, which was turned into cream, on sweat glands.

Methods

A cream form mixed with thyme oil was prepared for EDA recording. Our groups were formed as EDA recording gel (Group 1), cream with thyme oil (Group 2), cream containing 10% boron (Group 3) and cream containing 30% boron (Group 4). In each group, 3 months old, 10 male rats were used, and creams were applied to the soles of the hind extremities of the rats, EDA was recorded from this region after half an hour, and skin conductivity levels (SCL) were recorded as tonic (at rest) and phasic (with auditory sound stimulation).

Results

EDA results recorded in the morning were analysed with tonic and phasic recordings. In the morning SCL measurements, tonic SCL value of Group 4 was higher than the other groups (P < 0.001). Although the phasic SCL value was measured, it was significantly higher in Group 4 than in all groups (P < 0.0s).

Conclusion

EDA measurements showed that boron increased sweat gland activity by increasing sympathetic nerve activity.

Boron-based magnesium diboride nanosheets preparation and tested for antimicrobial properties for PES membrane

Antimicrobial resistance to antibiotics for current bacterial infection treatments is a medical problem. 2D nanoparticles, which can be used as both antibiotic carriers and direct antibacterial agents due to their large surface areas and direct contact with the cell membrane, are important alternatives in solving this problem. This study focuses on the effects of a new generation borophene derivative obtained from MgB2 particles on the antimicrobial activity of polyethersulfone membranes. MgB2 nanosheets were created by mechanically separating magnesium diboride (MgB2) particles into layers. The samples were microstructurally characterized using SEM, HR-TEM, and XRD methods. MgB2 nanosheets were screened for various biological activities such as antioxidant, DNA nuclease, antimicrobial, microbial cell viability inhibition, and antibiofilm activities. The antioxidant activity of nanosheets was 75.24 ± 4.15% at 200 mg/L. Plasmid DNA was entirely degraded at 125 and 250 mg/L nanosheet concentrations. MgB2 nanosheets exhibited a potential antimicrobial effect against tested strains. The cell viability inhibitory effect of the MgB2 nanosheets was 99.7 ± 5.78%, 99.89 ± 6.02%, and 100 ± 5.84% at 12.5 mg/L, 25 mg/L, and 50 mg/L, respectively. The antibiofilm activity of MgB2 nanosheets against S. aureus and P. aeruginosa was observed to be satisfactory. Furthermore, a polyethersulfone (PES) membrane was prepared by blending MgB2 nanosheets from 0.5 wt to 2.0 wt %. Pristine PES membrane also has shown the lowest steady-state fluxes at 30.1 ± 2.1 and 56.6 L/m2h for BSA and E. coli, respectively. With the increase of MgB2 nanosheets amount from 0.5 to 2.0 wt%, steady-state fluxes increased from 32.3 ± 2.5 to 42.0 ± 1.0 and from 15.6 ± 0.7 to 24.1 ± 0.8 L/m2h, respectively for BSA and E. coli. E. coli elimination performance of PES membrane coated with MgB2 nanosheets at different rates and the membrane filtration procedure was obtained from 96% to 100%. The results depicted that BSA and E. coli rejection efficiencies of MgB2 nanosheets blended PES membranes increased when compared to pristine PES membranes.

Antibiotic-Loaded Boron Nitride Nanoconjugate with Strong Performance against Planktonic Bacteria and Biofilms

Protecting surfaces from biofilm formation presents a significant challenge in the biomedical field. The utilization of antimicrobial component-conjugated nanoparticles is becoming an attractive strategy against infectious biofilms. Boron nitride (BN) nanomaterials have a unique biomedical application value due to their excellent biocompatibility. Here, we developed antibiotic-loaded BN nanoconjugates to combat bacterial biofilms. Antibiofilm testing included two types of pathogens, Staphylococcus aureus and Escherichia coli. Gentamicin was loaded on polydopamine-modified BN nanoparticles (GPBN) to construct a nanoconjugate, which was very effective in killing E. coli and S. aureus planktonic cells. GPBN exhibited equally strong capacity for biofilm destruction, tested on preformed biofilms. A 24 h treatment with the nanoconjugate reduced cell viability by more than 90%. Our results suggest that GPBN adheres to the surface of the biofilm, penetrates inside the biofilm matrix, and finally deactivates the cells. Interestingly, the GPBN coatings also strongly inhibited the formation of bacterial biofilms. Based on these results, we suggest that GPBN could serve as an effective means for treating biofilm-associated infections and as coatings for biofilm prevention.

Theoretical Analysis of Riboflavin Adsorption on Hexagonal Boron Nitride for Drug Delivery Applications: Unveiling the Influence of Point Defects

This research delves into the intriguing realm of investigating the stability of vitamin B2 (riboflavin, Rf) on hexagonal boron nitride (h-BN), both in its pristine state and in the presence of vacancy defects, with the aim of harnessing their potential as carriers for drug delivery applications. Employing the density functional theory (DFT), we perform binding energy calculations and analyze the electronic structure of the BN@Rf system to unravel the nature of their interactions. Our comprehensive DFT calculations unequivocally demonstrate the spontaneous physical sorption of the drug onto the h-BN surface, facilitated by the formation of π-π stacking interactions. The adsorption energy spans a range from -1.15 to -4.00 eV per system, emphasizing the robust nature of the BN@Rf bonding. The results show that the HOMO and LUMO of riboflavin are located exactly in the region of the iso-alloxazine rings of riboflavin. This arrangement fosters the formation of π-π stacking between riboflavin and boron nitride, effectively facilitating the transfer of electron density within the BN@Rf system. Furthermore, our investigations reveal the significant impact of vacancy defects within the boron nitride lattice. These vacancies alter the behavior of the structure, prompting riboflavin to metamorphose from an electron donor to an electron acceptor, expanding our understanding of the interplay between boron nitride defects and riboflavin sorption. Therefore, it is imperative to exert meticulous oversight of the structural integrity of h-BN, given that the existence of vacancies may lead to a noticeable change in its adsorption properties. The obtained data could amplify our capacity to conceive and refine drug delivery h-BN-based systems.

Advances in Material Modification with Smart Functional Polymers for Combating Biofilms in Biomedical Applications

Biofilms as living microorganism communities are found anywhere, and for the healthcare sector, these constitute a threat and allied mechanism for health-associated or nosocomial infections. This review states the basis of biofilms and their formation. It focuses on their relevance for the biomedical sector, generalities, and the major advances in modified or new synthesized materials to prevent or control biofilm formation in biomedicine. Biofilm is conceptualized as an aggregate of cells highly communicated in an extracellular matrix, which the formation obeys to molecular and genetic basis. The biofilm offers protection to microorganisms from unfavorable environmental conditions. The most frequent genera of microorganisms forming biofilms and reported in infections are Staphylococcus spp., Escherichia spp., and Candida spp. in implants, heart valves, catheters, medical devices, and prostheses. During the last decade, biofilms have been most commonly related to health-associated infections and deaths in Europe, the United States, and Mexico. Smart, functional polymers are materials capable of responding to diverse stimuli. These represent a strategy to fight against biofilms through the modification or synthesis of new materials. Polypropylene and poly-N-isopropyl acrylamide were used enough in the literature analysis performed. Even smart polymers serve as delivery systems for other substances, such as antibiotics, for biofilm control.

Boron nitride decorated poly(vinyl alcohol)/poly(acrylic acid) composite nanofibers: A promising material for biomedical applications

In this study, polyvinyl alcohol (PVA) and polyacrylic acid (PAA) nanofibers loaded with boron nitride nanoparticles (mBN) were fabricated by using electrospinning and crosslinked by heat treatment. The physical, chemical, and mechanical properties, hydrophilic behavior, and degradability of composite nanofibers were evaluated. The mechanical properties such as elastic modulus, elongation percentage at the break, and mechanical strength of PVA/PAA nanofibers improved with mBN loading. The thermal conductivity of composite nanofibers reached 0.12 W/m·K at mBN content of 1.0 wt% due to the continuous heat conduction pathways of mBN. In the meantime, while there was no cytotoxicity recorded for both L929 and HUVEC cell lines for all composite nanofibers, the antimicrobial efficiency improved with the incorporation of mBN compared with PVA/PAA and recorded as 68.8% and 75.1% for Escherichia coli and Staphylococcus aureus, respectively. On this basis, the present work proposes a promising biomaterial for biomedical applications such as dual drug delivery, particularly including both hydrophobic and hydrophilic drugs or wound dressing.

Histomorphometric and biomechanical evaluation of the osseointegration around micro- and nano-level boron-nitride coated titanium dental implants

INTRODUCTION

Titanium dental implants has been coated with different materials such as polymers and biomimetic agents, bone morphogenetic protein, calcium phosphate to enhance surface properties of the titanium implants for osseointegration. The aim of this study was to evaluate the bone tissue healing around Boron Nitride-coated (BN-coated) titanium implants histomorphometrically and biomechanically and also observe the effect of different coating thicknesses on osseointegration.

MATERIALS AND METHODS

BN was coated on dental titanium implants with two different coating thicknesses by using RF magnetron sputtering system. Totally fifty-four implants were inserted into the tibias' of 12 New Zealand rabbits bilaterally under general anesthesia. All animals were sacrificed after 4-weeks. Bone-implant contact (BIC) and new bone area/total area ratios (BATA) were calculated. Also, the removal torque (RT) test was performed.

RESULTS

The highest new bone area in the medullary cavity was around the nano-BN-coated surface with 15.70%. In micro-BN-coated surface and control group, this ratio was determined as 10.48% and 8.23%, respectively. The BIC ratios in upper-side of implants and cortical-associated BIC ratios in lower-side were found significantly higher in control and micro-BN-coated group than nano-BN-coated group (p < 0.05). Similar BIC values were observed between control and micro-BN-coated groups (p > 0.05). BATA values did not show statistically significant differences between all three groups (p > 0.05). The RT values measured in all groups were found comparable and no statistically significant differences were found (p > 0.05).

CONCLUSION

No inflammatory reaction developed around any implant. Relatively more new bone formation around nano-BN-coated titanium implants indicates the promising osseoinductive effect of BN coating. BN-coated implants showed similar biomechanical and histomorphometrical outcomes to that of the conventional titanium implants through a 4-week evaluation period.

Understanding toxicity associated with boron nitride nanotubes: Review of toxicity studies, exposure assessment at manufacturing facilities, and read-across

Boron nitride nanotubes (BNNT) are produced by many different methods leading to variances in physicochemical characteristics and impurities in the final product. These differences can alter the toxicity profile. The importance of understanding the potential pathological implications of this high aspect ratio nanomaterial is increasing as new approaches to synthesize and purify in large scale are being developed. In this review, we discuss the various factors of BNNT production that can influence its toxicity followed by summarizing the toxicity findings from in vitro and in vivo studies conducted to date, including a review of particle clearance observed with various exposure routes. To understand the risk to workers and interpret relevance of toxicological findings, exposure assessment at manufacturing facilities was discussed. Workplace exposure assessment of BNNT from two manufacturing facilities measured boron concentrations in personal breathing zones from non-detectable to 0.95 μg/m3 and TEM structure counts of 0.0123 ± 0.0094 structures/cm3, concentrations well below what was found with other engineered high aspect ratio nanomaterials like carbon nanotubes and nanofibers. Finally, using a purified BNNT, a "read-across" toxicity assessment was performed to demonstrate how known hazard data and physicochemical characteristics can be utilized to evaluate potential inhalation toxicity concerns.

Boron nitride nanosheets modified with zinc oxide nanoparticles as novel fillers of dental resin composite

OBJECTIVE

The purpose of this study was to synthesize boron nitride nanosheets modified with zinc oxide nanoparticles (BNNSs/ZnO) and incorporate them as a novel inorganic filler to get an antibacterial dental resin composite.

METHODS

The BNNSs/ZnO nanocomposites were synthesized via the hydrothermal method and characterized by Field Emission Scanning Electron Microscope (FESEM), Transmission Electron Microscopy (TEM), Energy Dispersive Spectrometer (EDS), X-ray Diffraction (XRD) and Fourier Transform-Infrared (FTIR) Spectroscopy. The BNNSs/ZnO or BNNSs were added into the experimental dental composite with different proportions, respectively. The mechanical and physical properties of the modified dental composite were evaluated. Their antibacterial activities were also assessed by quantitative analysis using Streptococcus mutans (S. mutans).

RESULTS

The BNNSs/ZnO nanocomposites were successfully synthesized, and the growth of ZnO nanoparticles (ZnO NPs) on boron nitride nanosheets was confirmed. The flexural strength (FS), flexural modulus (FM) and the compressive strength (CS) of all modified resin composites showed no change compared to the control group. The curing depth, degree of conversion, water absorption and solubility of the modified composites were still within the clinical requirement. The antibacterial rates of the modified composites were significantly increased compared to the control group, which can reach 98 % when 0.5 % BNNSs/ZnO was added.

SIGNIFICANCE

The modified dental resin composite with novel BNNSs or BNNSs/ZnO fillers shows significantly high antibacterial activity with suitable physicochemical and mechanical properties.

Eucalyptus oil nanoemulsions against eggs and larvae of Haemonchus contortus

Haemonchus contortus is a highly pathogenic and prevalent helminth that causes many deaths in sheep herds. Anthelmintics are usually employed to overcome this issue; however, they do not guarantee immediate and lasting efficacy because of the occurrence of drug-resistant parasites. Among substances that are used in scientific studies for parasitic control, essential oils are known to have different pharmacological properties. However, they demonstrate instability owing to several factors, and therefore, nanoemulsification is considered an alternative to control the instability and degradability of these compounds. The objective of this study was to evaluate the cytotoxicity of nanoemulsions containing essential oil of Eucalyptus globulus against the blood of healthy sheep and to verify their activity against the parasite H. contortus in sheep. The results presented adequate nanotechnological characteristics (diameter 72 nm, PDI 0.2, zeta -11 mV, and acidic pH) and adequate morphology. Further, the corona effect and cytotoxic profiles of the free oil and nanoemulsion against blood cells from healthy sheep were evaluated. The tests results did not present a toxicity profile. For evaluating efficacy, we observed an important anthelmintic action of the nanoemulsion containing oil in comparison to the free oil; the results demonstrate a potential role of the nanoemulsion in the inhibition of egg hatchability and the development of larvae L1 to L3 (infective stage). Based on these results, we developed an important and potential anthelmintic alternative for the control of the parasite H. contortus.

Recent Progress in Fabrication and Application of BN Nanostructures and BN-Based Nanohybrids

Due to its unique physical, chemical, and mechanical properties, such as a low specific density, large specific surface area, excellent thermal stability, oxidation resistance, low friction, good dispersion stability, enhanced adsorbing capacity, large interlayer shear force, and wide bandgap, hexagonal boron nitride (h-BN) nanostructures are of great interest in many fields. These include, but are not limited to, (i) heterogeneous catalysts, (ii) promising nanocarriers for targeted drug delivery to tumor cells and nanoparticles containing therapeutic agents to fight bacterial and fungal infections, (iii) reinforcing phases in metal, ceramics, and polymer matrix composites, (iv) additives to liquid lubricants, (v) substrates for surface enhanced Raman spectroscopy, (vi) agents for boron neutron capture therapy, (vii) water purifiers, (viii) gas and biological sensors, and (ix) quantum dots, single photon emitters, and heterostructures for electronic, plasmonic, optical, optoelectronic, semiconductor, and magnetic devices. All of these areas are developing rapidly. Thus, the goal of this review is to analyze the critical mass of knowledge and the current state-of-the-art in the field of BN-based nanomaterial fabrication and application based on their amazing properties.

Two-dimensional biomaterials: material science, biological effect and biomedical engineering applications

To date, nanotechnology has increasingly been identified as a promising and efficient means to address a number of challenges associated with public health. In the past decade, two-dimensional (2D) biomaterials, as a unique nanoplatform with planar topology, have attracted explosive interest in various fields such as biomedicine due to their unique morphology, physicochemical properties and biological effect. Motivated by the progress of graphene in biomedicine, dozens of types of ultrathin 2D biomaterials have found versatile bio-applications, including biosensing, biomedical imaging, delivery of therapeutic agents, cancer theranostics, tissue engineering, as well as others. The effective utilization of 2D biomaterials stems from the in-depth knowledge of structure-property-bioactivity-biosafety-application-performance relationships. A comprehensive summary of 2D biomaterials for biomedicine is still lacking. In this comprehensive review, we aim to concentrate on the state-of-the-art 2D biomaterials with a particular focus on their versatile biomedical applications. In particular, we discuss the design, fabrication and functionalization of 2D biomaterials used for diverse biomedical applications based on the up-to-date progress. Furthermore, the interactions between 2D biomaterials and biological systems on the spatial-temporal scale are highlighted, which will deepen the understanding of the underlying action mechanism of 2D biomaterials aiding their design with improved functionalities. Finally, taking the bench-to-bedside as a focus, we conclude this review by proposing the current crucial issues/challenges and presenting the future development directions to advance the clinical translation of these emerging 2D biomaterials.

Polyaniline-Conjugated Boron Nitride Nanoparticles Exhibiting Potent Effects against Pathogenic Brain-Eating Amoebae

Free-living amoebae include Acanthamoeba castellanii and Naegleria fowleri that are opportunistic protozoa responsible for life-threatening central nervous system infections with mortality rates over 90%. The rising number of cases and high mortality rates are indicative of the critical unmet need for the development of efficient drugs in order to avert future deaths. In this study, we assess the anti-amoebic capacity of a conducting polymer nanocomposite comprising polyaniline (PANI) and hexagonal boron nitride (hBN) against A. castellanii and N. fowleri. We observed significant amoebicidal and cysticidal effects using 100 μg/mL PANI/hBN (P < 0.05). Further, the nanocomposite demonstrated negligible cytotoxicity toward HaCaT and primary human corneal epithelial cells (pHCECs). In evaluating the mode of inhibition of A. castellanii due to treatment with PANI/hBN, increased intracellular reactive oxygen species (ROS) was measured and scanning microscopy visualized the formation of pores in the amoebae. Overall, this study is suggestive of the potential of the PANI/hBN nanocomposite as a promising therapy for amoeba infections.

Interaction of DNA-Complexed Boron Nitride Nanotubes and Cosolvents Impacts Dispersion and Length Characteristics

Processing boron nitride nanotubes (BNNTs) for applications ranging from nanomedicine to electronics generally requires dispersions of nanotubes that are stable in various compounds and solvents. We show that alcohol/water cosolvents, particularly isopropyl alcohol (IPA), are essential for the complexation of BNNTs with DNA under mild bath sonication. The resulting DNA-wrapped BNNT complexes are highly stable during purification and solvent exchange from cosolvents to water, providing potential for the versatile liquid-phase processing of BNNTs. Via molecular dynamics simulations, we demonstrate that IPA assists in the solvation of BNNTs due to its pseudosurfactant nature by verifying that water is replaced in the solvation layer as IPA is added. We quantify the solvation free energy of BNNTs in various IPA/water mixtures and observe a nonmonotonic trend, highlighting the importance of utilizing solvent-nanotube interactions in nanomaterial dispersions. Additionally, we show that nanotube lengths can be characterized by rheology measurements via determining the viscosity of dilute dispersions of DNA-BNNTs. This represents the bulk sample property in the liquid state, as compared to conventional imaging techniques that require surface deposition and drying. Our results also demonstrate that BNNT dispersions exhibit the rheological behavior of dilute Brownian rigid rods, which can be further exploited for the controlled processing and property enhancement of BNNT-enabled assemblies such as films and fibers.

Comparative antibacterial activity of 2D materials coated on porous-titania

Plasma electrolytic oxidation (PEO) is a well-established technique for the treatment of titanium-based materials. The formed titania-PEO surface can improve the osseointegration properties of titanium implants. Nevertheless, it can not address bacterial infection problems associated with bone implants. Recently, 2-dimensional (2D) materials such as graphene oxide (GO), MXene, and hexagonal boron nitride (hBN) have received considerable attention for surface modifications showing their antibacterial properties. In this paper, a comparative study on the effect of partial deposition of these three materials over PEO titania substrates on the antibacterial efficiency and bioactivity is presented. Their partial deposition through drop-casting instead of continuous film coating is propsed to simultaneously address both antibacterial and osseointegration abilities. Our results demonstrate the dose-dependent nature of the deposited antibacterial agent on the PEO substrate. GO-PEO and MXene-PEO samples showed the highest antibacterial activity with 70 (±2) % and 97 (±0.5) % inactivation of S. aureus colonies in the low concentration group, respectively. Furthermore, only samples in the higher concentration group were effective against E. coli bacteria with 18 (±2) % and 17 (±4) % decrease in numbers of colonies for hBN-PEO and GO-PEO samples, respectively. Moreover, all antibacterial samples demonstrated acceptable bioactivity and good biocompatibility, making them a considerable candidates for the next generation of antibacterial titanium implants.

Antipathogenic properties and applications of low-dimensional materials

A major health concern of the 21st century is the rise of multi-drug resistant pathogenic microbial species. Recent technological advancements have led to considerable opportunities for low-dimensional materials (LDMs) as potential next-generation antimicrobials. LDMs have demonstrated antimicrobial behaviour towards a variety of pathogenic bacterial and fungal cells, due to their unique physicochemical properties. This review provides a critical assessment of current LDMs that have exhibited antimicrobial behaviour and their mechanism of action. Future design considerations and constraints in deploying LDMs for antimicrobial applications are discussed. It is envisioned that this review will guide future design parameters for LDM-based antimicrobial applications.

Ag-Doped and Antibiotic-Loaded Hexagonal Boron Nitride Nanoparticles as Promising Carriers to Fight Different Pathogens

Utilization of antibacterial components-conjugated nanoparticles (NPs) is emerging as an attractive strategy for combating various pathogens. Herein, we demonstrate that Ag/BN NPs and antibiotic-loaded BN and Ag/BN nanoconjugates are promising carriers to fight bacterial and fungal infections. Extensive biological tests included two types of Gram-positive methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus aureus strains (B8469 and MW2), two types of Gram-negative Pseudomonas aeruginosa strains (ATCC27853 and B1307/17), and 47 types of Escherichia coli strains (including 41 multidrug-resistant ones), as well as five types of fungal cultures: Candida albicans (candidiasis-thrush) ATCC90028 and ATCC24433, Candida parapsilosis ATCC90018, Candida auris CBS109113, and Neurospora crassa wt. We have demonstrated that, even within a single genus Escherichia, there are many hospital E. coli strains with multi-drug resistance to different antibiotics. Gentamicin-loaded BN NPs have high bactericidal activity against S. aureus, P. aeruginosa, and 38 types of the E. coli strains. For the rest of the tested E. coli strains, the Ag nanoparticle-containing nanohybrids have shown superior bactericidal efficiency. The Ag/BN nanohybrids and amphotericin B-loaded BN and Ag/BN NPs also reveal high fungicidal activity against C. albicans, C. auris, C. parapsilosis, and N. crassa cells. In addition, based on the density functional theory calculations, the nature of antibiotic-nanoparticle interaction, the sorption capacity of the BN and Ag/BN nanohybrids for gentamicin and amphotericin B, and the most energetically favorable positions of the drug molecules relative to the carrier surface, which lead to lowest binding energies, have been determined. The obtained results clearly show high therapeutic potential of the antibiotic-loaded Ag/BN nanocarriers providing a broad bactericidal and fungicidal protection against all of the studied pathogens.

Antibacterial biomaterials in bone tissue engineering

Bone infection is a devastating disease characterized by recurrence, drug-resistance, and high morbidity, that has prompted clinicians and scientists to develop novel approaches to combat it. Currently, although numerous biomaterials that possess excellent biocompatibility, biodegradability, porosity, and mechanical strength have been developed, their lack of effective antibacterial ability substantially limits bone-defect treatment efficacy. There is, accordingly, a pressing need to design antibacterial biomaterials for effective bone-infection prevention and treatment. This review focuses on antibacterial biomaterials and strategies; it presents recently reported biomaterials, including antibacterial implants, antibacterial scaffolds, antibacterial hydrogels, and antibacterial bone cement types, and aims to provide an overview of these antibacterial materials for application in biomedicine. The antibacterial mechanisms of these materials are discussed as well.

Interactions Between 2D Materials and Living Matter: A Review on Graphene and Hexagonal Boron Nitride Coatings

Two-dimensional material (2DM) coatings exhibit complex and controversial interactions with biological matter, having shown in different contexts to induce bacterial cell death and contribute to mammalian cell growth and proliferation in vitro and tissue differentiation in vivo. Although several reports indicate that the morphologic and electronic properties of the coating, as well as its surface features (e.g., crystallinity, wettability, and chemistry), play a key role in the biological interaction, these kinds of interactions have not been fully understood yet. In this review, we report and classify the cellular interaction mechanisms observed in graphene and hexagonal boron nitride (hBN) coatings. Graphene and hBN were chosen as study materials to gauge the effect of two atomic-thick coatings with analogous lattice structure yet dissimilar electrical properties upon contact with living matter, allowing to discern among the observed effects and link them to specific material properties. In our analysis, we also considered the influence of crystallinity and surface roughness, detailing the mechanisms of interaction that make specific coatings of these 2DMs either hostile toward bacterial cells or innocuous for mammalian cells. In doing this, we discriminate among the material and surface properties, which are often strictly connected to the 2DM production technique, coating deposition and post-processing method. Building on this knowledge, the selection of 2DM coatings based on their specific characteristics will allow to engineer desired functionalities and devices. Antibacterial coatings to prevent biofouling, biocompatible platforms suitable for biomedical applications (e.g., wound healing, tissue repairing and regeneration, and novel biosensing devices) could be realized in the next future. Overall, a clear understanding on how the 2DM coating's properties may modulate a specific bacterial or cellular response is crucial for any future innovation in the field.

Assessment of Physico-Chemical and Toxicological Properties of Commercial 2D Boron Nitride Nanopowder and Nanoplatelets

Boron nitride (BN) nanomaterials have been increasingly explored for potential applications in chemistry and biology fields (e.g., biomedical, pharmaceutical, and energy industries) due to their unique physico-chemical properties. However, their safe utilization requires a profound knowledge on their potential toxicological and environmental impact. To date, BN nanoparticles have been considered to have a high biocompatibility degree, but in some cases, contradictory results on their potential toxicity have been reported. Therefore, in the present study, we assessed two commercial 2D BN samples, namely BN-nanopowder (BN-PW) and BN-nanoplatelet (BN-PL), with the objective to identify whether distinct physico-chemical features may have an influence on the biological responses of exposed cellular models. Morphological, structural, and composition analyses showed that the most remarkable difference between both commercial samples was the diameter of their disk-like shape, which was of 200-300 nm for BN-PL and 100-150 nm for BN-PW. Their potential toxicity was investigated using adenocarcinomic human alveolar basal epithelial cells (A549 cells) and the unicellular fungus Saccharomycescerevisiae, as human and environmental eukaryotic models respectively, employing in vitro assays. In both cases, cellular viability assays and reactive oxygen species (ROS) determinations where performed. The impact of the selected nanomaterials in the viability of both unicellular models was very low, with only a slight reduction of S. cerevisiae colony forming units being observed after a long exposure period (24 h) to high concentrations (800 mg/L) of both nanomaterials. Similarly, BN-PW and BN-PL showed a low capacity to induce the formation of reactive oxygen species in the studied conditions. Even at the highest concentration and exposure times, no major cytotoxicity indicators were observed in human cells and yeast. The results obtained in the present study provide novel insights into the safety of 2D BN nanomaterials, indicating no significant differences in the toxicological potential of similar commercial products with a distinct lateral size, which showed to be safe products in the concentrations and exposure conditions tested.

Visible-Light-Responsive Antibacterial Property of Boron-Doped Titania Films

Pure titanium dioxide TiO2 photocatalytic substrates exhibit antibacterial activity only when they are irradiated with ultraviolet light, which comprises high-energy wavelengths that damage all life. Impurity doping of TiO2-related materials enables visible light to stimulate photocatalytic activity, which enhances opportunities for TiO2 to be used as a disinfectant in living environments. Boron-doped TiO2 displays visible-light-responsive bactericidal properties. However, because boron-derived compounds also exert notable antibacterial effects, most reports did not clearly demonstrate the extent to which the bactericidal property of boron-doped TiO2 is contributed by visible-light-stimulated photocatalysis. In addition, TiO2 thin films have considerable potential for applications in equipment that requires sterilization; however, the antibacterial properties of boron-doped TiO2 thin films have been examined by only a few studies. We found that boron-doped TiO2 thin films displayed visible-light-driven antibacterial properties. Moreover, because boron compounds may have intrinsic antibacterial properties, using control groups maintained in the dark, we clearly demonstrated that visible light stimulated the photocatalysis of boron-doped TiO2 thin films but not the residue boron compounds display antibacterial property. The bactericidal effects induced by visible light are equally potent for the elimination of the model organism Escherichia coli and human pathogens, such as Acinetobacter baumannii, Staphylococcus aureus, and Streptococcus pyogenes. The antibacterial applications of boron-doped TiO2 thin films are described, and relevant perspectives discussed.

Ecotoxicological assessment of commercial boron nitride nanotubes toward Xenopus laevis tadpoles and host-associated gut microbiota

Despite the growing interest for boron nitride nanotubes (BNNT) due to their unique properties, data on the evaluation of the environmental risk potential of this emerging engineered nanomaterial are currently lacking. Therefore, the ecotoxicity of a commercial form of BNNT (containing tubes, hexagonal-boron nitride, and boron) was assessed in vivo toward larvae of the amphibian Xenopus laevis. Following the exposure, multiple endpoints were measured in the tadpoles as well as in bacterial communities associated to the host gut. Exposure to BNNT led to boron accumulation in host tissues and was not associated to genotoxic effects. However, the growth of the tadpoles increased due to BNNT exposure. This parameter was associated to remodeling of gut microbiome, benefiting to taxa from the phylum Bacteroidetes. Changes in relative abundance of this phylum were positively correlated to larval growth. The obtained results support the finding that BNNT are biocompatible as indicated by the absence of toxic effect from the tested nanomaterials. In addition, byproducts, especially free boron present in the tested product, were overall beneficial for the metabolism of the tadpoles.

Neuroprotective effects of boron nitride nanoparticles in the experimental Parkinson's disease model against MPP+ induced apoptosis

Parkinson's disease (PD) is one of the most aggressive neurodegenerative diseases and characterized by the loss of dopamine-sensitive neurons in the substantia nigra region of the brain. There is no any definitive treatment to completely cure PD and existing treatments can only ease the symptoms of the disease. Boron nitride nanoparticles have been extensively studied in nano-biological studies and researches showed that it can be a promising candidate for PD treatment with its biologically active unique properties. In the present study, it was aimed to investigate ameliorative effects of hexagonal boron nitride nanoparticles (hBNs) against toxicity of 1-methyl-4-phenylpyridinium (MPP⁺) in experimental PD model. Experimental PD model was constituted by application of MPP⁺ to differentiated pluripotent human embryonal carcinoma cell (Ntera-2, NT-2) culture in wide range of concentrations (0.62 to 2 mM). Neuroprotective activity of hBNs against MPP⁺ toxicity was determined by cell viability assays including MTT and LDH release. Oxidative alterations by hBNs application in PD cell culture model were investigated using total antioxidant capacity (TAC) and total oxidant status (TOS) tests. The impacts of hBNs and MPP⁺ on nuclear integrity were analyzed by Hoechst 33258 fluorescent staining method. Acetylcholinesterase (AChE) enzyme activities were determined by a colorimetric assay towards to hBNs treatment. Cell death mechanisms caused by hBNs and MPP+ exposure was investigated by flow cytometry analysis. Experimental results showed that application of hBNs increased cell viability in PD model against MPP⁺ application. TAS and TOS analysis were determined that antioxidant capacity elevated after hBNs applications while oxidant levels were reduced. Furthermore, flow cytometric analysis executed that MPP⁺ induced apoptosis was prevented significantly (p < 0.05) after application with hBNs. In a conclusion, the obtained results indicated that hBNs have a huge potential against MPP⁺ toxicity and can be used in PD treatment as novel neuroprotective agent and drug delivery system.

Black phosphorus for fighting antibiotic-resistant bacteria: What is known and what is missing

Recently, two-dimensional black phosphorus (BP) nanomaterial has captured much attention due to its superb physiochemical and electronic properties and various promising biomedical applications. However, relatively few studies have explored its antimicrobial properties, particularly for targeting antibiotic-resistant pathogens. A comprehensive understanding of the bactericidal mechanisms of BP is essential for application of this material as an antimicrobial. This review discusses the physicochemical and electronic properties of BP that are relevant for antimicrobial applications, especially the unique characteristics that may play a role in overcoming drug resistance. The literature is discussed in the context of what is known and what information is missing. We also highlight the differences and advantages of BP over other two-dimensional nanomaterials (i.e., graphene oxide and molybdenum disulfide) for bactericidal activity. Finally, we analyze existing challenges and note topics that require future investigation to overcome current inadequacies, aiming to assist the safe development of BP-based nanotechnology for pathogen control.

Electrospun Silk-Boron Nitride Nanofibers with Tunable Structure and Properties

In this study, hexagonal boron nitride (h-BN) nanosheets and Bombyx mori silk fibroin (SF) proteins were combined and electrospun into BNSF nanofibers with different ratios. It was found that the surface morphology and crosslinking density of the nanofibers can be tuned through the mixing ratios. Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy study showed that pure SF electrospun fibers were dominated by random coils and they gradually became α-helical structures with increasing h-BN nanosheet content, which indicates that the structure of the nanofiber material is tunable. Thermal stability of electrospun BNSF nanofibers were largely improved by the good thermal stability of BN, and the strong interactions between BN and SF molecules were revealed by temperature modulated differential scanning calorimetry (TMDSC). With the addition of BN, the boundary water content also decreased, which may be due to the high hydrophobicity of BN. These results indicate that silk-based BN composite nanofibers can be potentially used in biomedical fields or green environmental research.

Bactericidal behavior of chemically exfoliated boron nitride nanosheets doped with zirconium

In this work, boron nitride nanosheets (BNNS) were produced through chemical exfoliation of bulk boron nitride (BN). Furthermore, hydrothermal technique was used to incorporate various concentrations (2.5, 5, 7.5, and 10 wt%) of zirconium (Zr) as a dopant. The prepared undoped and doped BN samples were evaluated for its antimicrobial activity against E. coli and S. aureus. Structural analysis was undertaken using x-ray diffraction which identified the presence of hexagonal BN. FTIR and Raman spectroscopy were utilized to outline IR fingerprint and electronic properties of the synthesized material. Morphological information was obtained through micrographs extracted using field emission scanning electron spectroscope (FESEM) and high resolution transmission electron microscope (HRTEM), while d-spacing was also calculated through HRTEM analysis. Optical properties and emission spectra were examined by applying UV–vis and photoluminescence spectroscope (PL); whereas, band gap analysis was carried out via Tauc plot. Zr-doped BN nanosheets at increasing concentrations (0.5, 1.0 mg/50 μl) revealed enhanced antibacterial activity against E. coli compared to S. aureus (p < 0.05).

Engineering Two-dimensional Nanomaterials to Enable Structure-Activity Relationship Studies in Nanosafety Research

Emerging, two-dimensional engineered nanomaterials (2DNMs) possess unique and diverse physical and chemical properties, such as extreme aspect ratios, adjustable electronic properties as well as functional lattice defects and surface chemistry which underpin their interactions with biological systems. This perspective highlights the need for structure activity relationship (SAR) studies for key properties of emerging grapheme-related and inorganic 2DNMs upon prioritization based on their potential impact and trajectory for large-scale production and applications. Further, it is discussed how a synthesis platform of microbiologically sterile, size-sorted, "model" 2DNMs with precise structure would enable SAR toxicological studies and allow for the sustainable and safe translation of 2D nanotechnology to real-world applications.

Management of Streptococcus mutans-Candida spp. Oral Biofilms' Infections: Paving the Way for Effective Clinical Interventions

Oral diseases are considered the most common noncommunicable diseases and are related to serious local and systemic disorders. Oral pathogens can grow and spread in the oral mucosae and frequently in biomaterials (e.g., dentures or prostheses) under polymicrobial biofilms, leading to several disorders such as dental caries and periodontal disease. Biofilms harbor a complex array of interacting microbes, increasingly unapproachable to antimicrobials and with dynamic processes key to disease pathogenicity, which partially explain the gradual loss of response towards conventional therapeutic regimens. New drugs (synthesized and natural) and other therapies that have revealed promising results for the treatment or control of these mixed biofilms are presented and discussed here. A structured search of bibliographic databases was applied to include recent research. There are several promising new approaches in the treatment of Candida spp.-Streptococcus mutans oral mixed biofilms that could be clinically applied in the near future. These findings confirm the importance of developing effective therapies for oral Candida-bacterial infections.

Synthesis, Functionalization, and Bioapplications of Two-Dimensional Boron Nitride Nanomaterials

Two-dimensional boron nitride nanostructures (2D-BNNs) have been increasingly investigated for their applications in several scientific and technological areas. This considerable interest is due to their unique physicochemical properties, which include high hydrophobicity, heat and electrical insulation, resistance to oxidation, antioxidation capacity, thermal conductivity, high chemical stability, mechanical strength, and hydrogen storage capacity. They are also used as fillers, antibacterial agents, protective coating agents, lubricants, boron neutron capture therapy agents, nanocarriers for drug delivery, and for the receptor phase in chemosensors. The investigations for their use in medicine and biomedicine are very promising, including cancer therapy and wound healing. In this review, 2D-BNNs synthesis and their surface modification strategies, biocompatibility, and bioapplication studies are discussed. Finally, a perspective for the future use of these novel nanomaterials in the biomedical field is provided.

Facile Production of Hexagonal Boron Nitride Nanoparticles by Cryogenic Exfoliation

Fluorescent nanoparticles with optically robust luminescence are imperative to applications in imaging and labeling. Here we demonstrate that hexagonal boron nitride (hBN) nanoparticles can be reliably produced using a scalable cryogenic exfoliation technique with sizes below 10 nm. The particles exhibit bright fluorescence generated by color centers that act as atomic-size quantum emitters. We analyze their optical properties, including emission wavelength, photon-statistics, and photodynamics, and show that they are suitable for far-field super-resolution fluorescence nanoscopy. Our results provide a foundation for exploration of hBN nanoparticles as candidates for bioimaging, labeling, as well as biomarkers that are suitable for quantum sensing.

Decontamination and disinfection of wastewater by photocatalysis under UV/visible light using nano-catalysts based on Ca-doped ZnO

Nano-catalysts based on ZnO-Ca x% (with x = 0, 0.1, 0.3, 0.5, 0.7, and 1.0 mol % Ca²⁺) were synthesized with a bio-friendly adaptation of the sol-gel method using gelatin as template. These materials were characterized by Fourier Transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR), X-ray diffraction (XRD), Micro-Raman, transmission electron microscopy (TEM), scanning electron microscopy (SEM), N₂ physisorption, photoacoustic absorption spectroscopy (PAS), and photoluminescence spectroscopy (PL). The Raman results indicated that the signal, attributed to an E₁(LO) mode at 580 cm^-1, was characteristic of oxygen vacancies that decreased with the increased Ca²⁺ content in doped oxides. This agreed with the PL results, which showed that the green emission centered at 510 nm and attributable to structural defects in ZnO decreased for Ca-doped ZnO. Our oxides are constituted by nanoparticles with rod-like and spherical morphologies. All the nano-catalysts exhibited the band gap characteristics of semiconductor materials around 3.0 eV. ZnO-Ca 1.0% exhibited the best photocatalytic performance for degradation of Methyl Orange (MO) model dye, degrading about 82% after 240 min of UV-Vis irradiation at pH 7.0. The reaction mechanism was influenced by hydroxyl (OH) and superoxide (O₂^-) radicals and mainly by active holes (h⁺). This doped oxide also demonstrated efficiency in wastewater disinfection against heterotrophic bacteria and total coliforms, exhibiting a potential use as an antimicrobial agent for the treatment of hospital wastewater. Furthermore, our nanoparticles did not show significant cytotoxic effects on L929 fibroblast cells.

Boron Nitride Doped Polyhydroxyalkanoate/Chitosan Nanocomposite for Antibacterial and Biological Applications

The present research focused on the fabrication of biocompatible polyhydroxyalkanoate, chitosan, and hexagonal boron nitride incorporated (PHA/Ch-hBN) nanocomposites through a simple solvent casting technique. The fabricated nanocomposites were comprehensively characterized by Fourier transform infrared spectroscope (FT-IR), field emission scanning electroscope (FESEM), and elemental mapping and thermogravimetric analysis (TGA). The antibacterial activity of nanocomposites were investigated through time-kill method against multi drug resistant (MDR) microbes such as methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus aureus (MRSA) and Escherichia coli (E. coli) K1 strains. In addition, nanocomposites have examined for their host cytotoxicity abilities using a Lactate dehydrogenase (LDH) assay against spontaneously immortalized human keratinocytes (HaCaT) cell lines. The results demonstrated highly significant antibacterial activity against MDR organisms and also significant cell viability as compared to the positive control. Application of Antimicrobial Nanoparticles in Dentistry

Oral cavity incessantly encounters a plethora of microorganisms. Plaque biofilm-a major cause of caries, periodontitis and other dental diseases-is a complex community of bacteria or fungi that causes infection by protecting pathogenic microorganisms from external drug agents and escaping the host defense mechanisms. Antimicrobial nanoparticles are promising because of several advantages such as ultra-small sizes, large surface-area-to-mass ratio and special physical and chemical properties. To better summarize explorations of antimicrobial nanoparticles and provide directions for future studies, we present the following critical review. The keywords "nanoparticle," "anti-infective or antibacterial or antimicrobial" and "dentistry" were retrieved from Pubmed, Scopus, Embase and Web of Science databases in the last five years. A total of 172 articles met the requirements were included and discussed in this review. The results show that superior antibacterial properties of nanoparticle biomaterials bring broad prospects in the oral field. This review presents the development, applications and underneath mechanisms of antibacterial nanoparticles in dentistry including restorative dentistry, endodontics, implantology, orthodontics, dental prostheses and periodontal field.
